In short

IGN GameScoop episode covering recent gaming news and impressions from Gamescom, plus reviews/discussion of upcoming releases. They react to Sony’s State of Play, debate what PlayStation “punctuation” it should have provided, and preview several games they’re excited to play. They also discuss Capcom’s “winning streak” and why Capcom keeps shipping high-quality titles.

Guests (backgrounds)

Damon Hatfield is the host. Pear Schneider is co-host. Sam Claiborne and Justin Davis are additional co-host/panel members; all four recently attended Gamescom in Germany together.

Key claims

Sony’s State of Play felt underwhelming because major PlayStation conversation (GTA 6, Witcher 3 remaster) was already set by Gamescom and prior weeks. Capcom’s output is unusually consistently strong due to its RE Engine pipeline, multiple teams, and a design philosophy focused on core fun rather than chasing trends.

Notable examples

Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth (April 8), The Witcher 3 remaster, Exodus (launching April 7/9), Man Eater 2 (shark “evolution” gameplay), Ghost of Yote Complete Edition (includes “Most Wanted” mode), The Blood of Dawnwalker (time/decision pressure; performance tips), Onimusha (deliberate parry/timing combat), and GTA 6 (Netflix deep dive praised for character writing and reactive chaos).

1:16Justin Davis:What's up, everybody? Welcome to IGN GameScoop. I'm your host, Damon Hatfield, and joining me here in studio is Pear Schneider. I'm not your host, Pear Schneider. You're my co-host. Thank you, thank you. We're also joined by Sam Claiborne. I'll answer your question. I don't know what's up and well you're about to find out and Justin Davis Scoop all four of us who were just in Germany together at gamescom But somehow I was the only one out of this for that was able to scoop it up

1:41Peer Schneider:I'm sorry You just by yourself. Let me tell you let me tell you what I think it's Damon's time Finally my mom.

1:49Justin Davis:No, I did a two-person scoop with Nick Lamone and one of the comments was two-person scoop works surprisingly well Yep, well, that's it. Everybody else is gone. In a pinch. We can make it work. Anyway, got a great show for you this week. There's so many games. All of a sudden, I find myself with just a pile of games to play after kind of a quiet summer since 007 First Light. Now I've got Onimusha, The Blood of Don Walker. I finally got Marvel Tokon. I really like Star Wars Zero Company. Talk about all that. Plus, there's this Grand Theft Auto VI game coming that we actually haven't even gotten a chance to talk about that yet.

2:23Justin Davis:I feel like we should at least... Gamescoop, the world needs to know what Gamescoop thinks about. You know, a lot of people are kind of on the fence about this game. They're waiting to hear what Gamescoop thinks about GTA 6. We'll finally render our verdict on that. Well, you just never know with small Scottish indie studios when they work on something. It could be good, though. Could be good? I had a good feeling. But first, Sony held a state of play this morning. I'm not sure that they needed to, but they did. There was one. not one of the not one of the better ones i don't think no no not a lot of data play that could have

2:57Peer Schneider:been an email which sounds weird where it's like you know obviously big i just like i don't know it's actually i immediately regret saying that because like there's a lot of really big games on it but i just i don't need to see anything more from final fantasy was it revelation is that what it's called i just think they're they we've seen too much like i don't need to see any more of it

3:15Justin Davis:in a really short amount of time we've seen it three times over this the this the summer i look Look, I think Sony was being respectful in not broadcasting this during Gamescom, right? They were not a Gamescom partner. And so it didn't counter program on like some other big company that was not at Gamescom. And so I think the sort of adjacency to Gamescom, though, made it a little bit of a postscript, whereas like we had seen Final Fantasy stuff. And so, you know, it just didn't have that impact. And we got release dates and we got some games, some game announcements, some smaller stuff. I can't believe we're complaining about this.

3:54Tifa was in it. Yeah, okay.

3:56Justin Davis:Yeah, Tifa was in it. I thought the Final Fantasy stuff they showed was confirming the stuff that I was most interested to know. Like, what is an open world with an airship like in 2027? It's pretty cool. Turns out it's sick. Yeah, I love that. yeah it's completely tears of the kingdom coated i am awesome yeah but the thing is like it's a sony state of play so you kind of want to see like we just saw this last week so we kind of want to see some first party stuff that's coming out so that that's the i think that's the reason why is there first party stuff coming out there's the god of war game in february yeah god of war

4:33Peer Schneider:intergalactic is some people were holding out hope i mean i some people are like oh maybe it'll be here um yeah it was not and then you know look the wolverine to the general consumer like they might still be very hungry to see more stuff about that one i mean i think people feel about wolverine like the people feel about vital fantasy which is like just give me the game already yeah which is surprising that's already happening final fantasy but not when you think about it as like a what a 15 year journey right it's like yeah we do know what to expect from except for a few little things i'm glad they showed that but yeah i mean state of play like it's always nice when there's a just one more thing and even better when there's just three more things some of the recent state of plays that really worked show a bunch of like crazy cool japanese action games the early the one earlier in this year was great that one in like

5:22Justin Davis:february or whatever then they did they showed the new kena yeah they unveiled castlevania i don't know that was a good one yeah and there's like that stellar blade sequel we want to know more about there's a bunch of spooky season games coming out like there's a bunch of things that like could have been in this that weren't and then there's also like you know is there ever going to be an uncharted game ever again and stuff like that which is perpetually the question you want answered by a sony stream also this is just a time when everyone's kind of down on playstation you know it's like i mean like they have this whole thing happening with physical media people don't feel great about it they aren't excited about the brand people are excited about games they can play on their PlayStation, but there isn't a lot of love for the PlayStation brand right now.

6:04Justin Davis:So they have this big opportunity to do something about that. And I think they kind of squander it. Yeah, look, I mean, some of the big stories for PlayStation gamers were definitely covered by the prior week, right? Like Grand Theft Auto 6 is allegedly best on PlayStation 5, right? And so that's what everybody in PlayStation fandom is going to be talking about for the next couple of months and certainly in November. and then something like the the witcher 3 getting a remaster that we're most definitely also going to be playing on our playstations is also big news for fandom but all of that was already blown out by gamescom yeah we've had a good couple of weeks for game news and showing games so like all in all it's really nice it's just this wasn't the punctuation mark that i think we wanted on the end of that um there's still always nintendo direct in september so well they have they have a game that nobody's seen so you know there's an actual anticipation for it yeah yeah yeah that's crazy right like this game that's coming out this fall we haven't seen barely anything of just a little cg trailer wait which showed off a lego oh yeah that's yeah we talked about this last week what just the ocarina they haven't they've been really quiet about it and then they just had this huge marketing beat i would like build a big ocarina booth for gamescom where three it was like 380 80 ,000 people attended this year.

7:23Justin Davis:Wow. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, just I was really hoping for that. And then some of the companies that came through with their booth builds were amazing, like the Tomb Raider Dinosaur booth. Yes, they were awesome booths this year. Castle City Gamescom were so cool this year. Xbox was incredible. They had all these little dioramas of like old vintage Xbox rooms. Yeah, like the different eras of Xbox. And then you could take a picture of yourself and it would put you inside the diorama. It was really cute. I met with the - If they just had the Warthog alone, I would have been impressed. So that was huge.

7:52I met with the folks at Kernmesse and at Game, the two organizations that put on the show, and they were completely surprised, like super pleasantly surprised with the quality of the booths. Like this was a huge upgrade over previous years. And so many good looking booths.

8:11Justin Davis:It felt like the old E3 days. And people can go to it. Because when the best height of E3 was happening, it was not open to the public. And I think it's really cool to see this. And they somehow handle it with lines and everything. Just because the place is so big and there's so much to do. I was really impressed with the marketing of video games feeling cool and old school. I'm confused by this video. These are a bunch of different Laras. Where are all these Tomb Raiders? Cosplayers. A cosplay meetup. 368 ,000 people went to this event. And that's not counting the people out in the party in the streets.

8:52The Cologne party. Most of them were Tomb Raiders. Most of them were Tomb Raiders.

8:56Justin Davis:Anyway, Final Fantasy VII Revelations finally coming on April 8th. Yeah, that's a good date. I like it. It's an interesting date. You know, there's a... This is why. Uh-oh. You know this game Exodus? Yes. It's this sci-fi RPG from former Mass Effect devs. That launches April 7th. Oh. April? April 9th, my birthday, so you guys can give me the game early if you're in Japan. I like this trend of there's a game like Mass Effect coming out, because this week we got a game like The Witcher.

9:28Peer Schneider:Yeah. From former Witcher devs, yeah. I think Exodus is like a dark horse. I really like Gamescom for a lot of reasons, but one of the reasons that I like it is there really is an element of sort of like kingmaker at this show where games can come out of Gamescom with like more hype and more buzz and like they're they've revealed the world like dnd warlock was like that like really came out of games remember enzoi was like that yeah and yeah i don't know did that ever launch i don't know yeah it did early access fine launch but never like a 1.0 launch no it's early access yeah yeah no that's right okay i just think exodus i like new ip you know i like things that's not the 10th sequel we've got in a franchise and like there's such a strong element of like if bioware is not going to do it this you know another company will do it Like, fine, we'll just make our own Mass Effect.

10:16Peer Schneider:Thanos, fine. I'll do it myself. Yeah, exactly. And it looks, you know, indie studio, you know, new IP. Like, we'll see whether it can deliver on that promise. But, like, everything they're showing off so far looks great.

10:31Justin Davis:I agree. But now that it's coming the day before Final Fantasy VII. Oh, yeah.

10:35Peer Schneider:It's going to be May 7th or March 7th. They're going to move. But an April date for Final Fantasy is wonderful because everybody stuck their game in February. The first three months of the year are so crowded. Yeah, that's true. I'm happy that we got our first other big April game out of this. Did you guys see Yuffie has a little grappling hook? It's pretty cool. That is cool. Vertical level there. That looked good.

11:05Justin Davis:I liked those GJ6 controllers, the PS5 controllers. I would get one if it's easy. If I could just buy one and not have to go through any hoops, So I would get one.

11:14Peer Schneider:See, I got the 2026, it's 2026, and it doesn't work that way. Not easy by hard-wise.

11:17Justin Davis:I got the 007 one, so I'm like controller-ed out. Okay, all right. When did you ever say that about Amiibo, though? I got this Amiibo, so I'm Amiibo-ed out. Well, no, I have to be Amiibo complete. I'm waiting on the Resident Evil ones right now. Anyway, these controllers. I heard that they're going to go digital only with their controllers after this generation. Yeah, that's hilarious. You just have to use your phone and on-screen buttons on your iPhone. Yeah, well, or you just wave your hands around like an idiot. We went through that. Connect. We did. Xbox on. You just turned one Xbox on somewhere in Brazil.

11:56God damn it. Like in a cafe in Brazil where it's still hooked up for the kids. No, I didn't because I would have had to say it eight or nine more times. Yeah, that's right.

12:05Justin Davis:That's true. Good times. Genuinely, the announcement from the state I played that was the most exciting for me was Man Eater 2. Oh, that was great. Yeah, Man Eater 2. That first game is totally fun. It's like... Yeah. If you haven't played it, it's a shark game. You're the shark. They call it a shark PG. Shark PG. Because as you eat, you get bigger and you evolve and you get like electricity powers that can shoot lightning out of your mouth. It's great. Yeah, it was like Echo the Dolphin a little bit with teeth. Yeah. It looks good too. like i just i like the the kind of the vibe of this and it's like a sea world kind of resort

12:39Peer Schneider:thing it's really cool yeah we just don't get a lot of i don't know if they announced a price for this yet but like we just these kind of 40 50 games they just you know they're just underrepresented in the market of just like it is what it is and it's not trying to be more and you're going to play it and have a good time yep it's got wall jumps yeah i know it's just yeah

12:58Justin Davis:eat people eat other sea creatures it's it's great yeah and then the the fact that it's in this amusement park kind of gives it a jaws 3d vibe yeah totally wow you watched that when i was like yeah i watched it i think it's just one of those movies that i'd watch anytime it was on tv when i was a kid all i remember from the from that one is that the shark when it swims sometimes it doesn't move it's just like a little boat like it has an amazing game oh i can't think of their their name. Some small studio. Yep. Not Apogee, but something like that. Yep. Anyway, that looks fun. I will play that.

13:36Justin Davis:My computer's locked up. What was the other thing? Oh, yeah, there's Ghosts of Yote. Oh, yeah. Complete Edition. Yeah, there's a Complete Edition, so it includes the most wanted mode, which is a single-player combat survival roguelike mode that brings back Jin from Tsushima. That looks fun. Sick. The combat in the game is super fun, so I love that game. Yeah, I'll play that. And that's coming out October 1st. I'll be so bad at the content. Oh, well, yeah.

CementMobile.com Should I play the blood of the Don Walker comma the the blood of Dawnwalker.

16:53It starts with the the. Do you like The Witcher?

16:56Justin Davis:I'm a huge Witcher fan. I was going to do Onimusha first, but Jobra, we can just talk The Blood of Dawnwalker first. Yeah, that's got a 9 out of 10 from IGN.com. Yeah, but then one scoop panel member was like talking crap about it. Who? No, who? Who was? I was. You were? Yeah, I think the first part of this game is so bad. I mean, obviously it becomes a fun game, but like it's that that intro is unbelievable like you you you didn't want to go fishing you have a dream you chase a girl you wash a witch you hit on her heavily uh you learn latin uh then you you you ignore a bunch of side quests and then the great the stuff happens um the the i i like the idea of like in the carpathians these you know vampires are running a town and it's scary like that's all good i just don't think it's conveyed very well but once you're out like zooming around and clawing people and stuff it's pretty fun but you also had some frame rate issues right like the the games get a 60 fps patch so um yeah turn it on performance if you're playing this on console put it on performance it looks totally like the textures look good still it just it without it being on performance it's just awful awful looking game and performance like makes it just look like a you know like like the witcher yeah yeah i just thought i just thought

18:17Peer Schneider:the beginning i'm so glad it turned out well i mean i really you know that our ign reviewer liked it just it really struck me it's like oh former witcher devs are making a witcher like and it's like yeah okay we'll see like it had six out of ten or seven out of ten written all over it and so the fact that they actually kind of like delivered and um it just it makes me really happy like i'm just so glad and i'm 100 gonna play it i i was really anxious to hear like the whole game's conceit is this 30 day time limit and that stressed me out yes but yep they handle it in a smart way they handle it in a smart way right where like it's not an actual time limit you have unlimited time to play the game but when you take actions like complete quests or level up or this and that that that pushes it that advances time and so let me it's like it's like persona it's like there's a there's also a breath of the wild element to it because you can complete the game by doing the main mission at any time so what you're doing is is build like you're choosing which things you're going to build before taking that on you can it has a time limit on that but like you're basically doing as much as you can to build your character to take on that quest and make it easier but you can go right to it i remember by the way when that's cool when pikmin came out everybody was so mad about the time limit and then pikmin 2 came out everybody's so mad that the time limit was gone.

19:34Peer Schneider:I don't remember the second one. The time limit in Pikmin's terrible. It is annoying. I agree, too. But it created pressure, right? It made it a little bit tenser. And so I like that. And granted, I haven't played Blood of the Dawnwalker yet, but I'm glad that it's not actually time pressure, but it's just decision pressure, right? You can complete this side quest and help this guy, but it's going to take up, you know, it's going to advance time. And so you have to choose whether you want to do it or not. And like that makes me a lot more intrigued and interested than I would have been. It's more like there's like 500 things to do in the game and you can do 100 of them.

20:09That's your allotment. And so that builds your character, how you choose those. And that's smart, right? So then there's like the vampire stuff is really funny. Like you can accidentally chew people up because you have like this flash of vampirism and it takes one of your dialogue options when you're like skipping through dialogue and all of a sudden you just eat your friend it's pretty funny and and then there's like also if you're just like walking around you need to like rebuild your life you just like tackle a goat are there are there swear wolves in the game uh there's big mountain goat people okay fair

Read the full transcript

20:46Justin Davis:yeah and pair spoiler alert but you become a vampire yeah no i figured that and so there's there's kind of like two different play styles you're like during the day you're like using your sword and magic and then at night you're a vampire and use your claws and it's like you have two builds that you can build out thanks for bringing this up though i still have ptsd from elder scrolls not knowing there was vampirism in the game and then waking up one day and being a vampire oh my god that sucked man that was really funny yeah yeah also as a side note there's a whole uh quest about this in dungeon crawler carl about vampirism book five that i just i'm going You should play The Blood of Donwalk.

21:28I'm trying to The Blood of the Donwalk. No, the only one The Blood of Donwalk. I'm joking.

21:33Peer Schneider:There's only one The Blood of the Donwalk. I know. We have a daily trivia quiz on IGN. If you go to IGN.com, click in the left nav and click on Trivia or Game Scope, which Justin is curating wonderfully, I might say. One of the trivia questions in the upcoming days is, is it The Blood of Donwalk? Or Blood of the Domehawker. By the way, the same thing happened with The Wind Waker and all of that. People got very confused. Oh, right.

22:02Justin Davis:There's nothing changed. It's just Wind Waker, right? Oh, there is a The. The Legend of Zelda, Wind Waker.

22:08Peer Schneider:Correct. It's also not The Ocarina of Time. Nope. It is just Ocarina of Time.

22:13Justin Davis:Yes. Do you like this game, Damon? Yeah, I do like it. I've only spent a couple evenings with it, but yes. Sam did the Sam thing in the IGN Guides chat channel where he crapped on it, and then everybody went, what? No, we love it. Just like, so scoop listeners, it's the same internally at IGN. It's the same. But the takes from that team were, you know, backwards, like I'm at the end of the game and coded, whereas like, it's a legit criticism of the game that like, it really is bad at the start. Like, it's really bad. I don't think it's bad, but it is a little bit of a slow ramp up. I mean... that kid that kid's haircut alone it can't be worse than crimson desert although that got

23:01Peer Schneider:i dude i so i like i'm such a dlc yeah well and they released the story like i i sorry i'm gonna hijack the show for a second but before the dlc it's like they released the story patch of like like we fixed the story we changed it and like i'm so curious i'm so curious because it's like did you like did you really fix it like because it was bad it was so bad before you're sure about that and so like i want to start it over but then i'm also looking at all the video games that are out right now and i'm like oh i can't i can't it's gonna have to wait till christmas break i think

23:38Justin Davis:yeah yeah that's okay i still don't know i'm still so curious about crimson desert have i still not played it but i'm curious but then there's also this like i said there's another pile of games Did you want more content in it before you started? Because they're adding more content to it. I early on decided I'm going to wait. And like, you know, like people said, yeah, it's rough. It has really cool elements. You'll love it. And then you won't like it. I'm like, I have time. I have so much to play. I'm going to wait on this game. I will definitely eventually play it. And I bet it's going to be awesome.

26:06Thank you.

26:49wayfair every style every home the game that i'm playing the most right now is onimusha which got a 10 for my jam yeah it's my it's my first onimusha i've never played oh an onimusha before i never played them either i played the original really yeah but this is the first mainline OniMotion in 20 years anyway if you're like me if you aren't sure

27:12Justin Davis:what this is it's not Resident Evil it's like they're like cinematic action adventure at least this one is a cinematic action adventure game it's sword play but it's not hack and slash you have to be very deliberate combat relies heavily on uh timing parries uh deflections you want to break the enemy's stamina and perform executions there isn't stealth but if you get if you walk up behind someone most enemies you can assassinate them with one kill and a lot easier than sekiro at least in the beginning it's not dark souls it's not souls like yeah at all and in fact it has really cool bosses like big cool boss designs but it operates it follows the damon hatfield rule of three which is that i should not have to fight a boss more than three times oh okay and so far so far so good okay that's good uh oh it just does commit the cardinal sin though of i get the boss's health down to zero and then it refills completely like the next phase yeah whatever if you want to have another phase build it into their their their life bar don't let take it down to zero and then fill it all the way up again it's just cheap but it's toying with your emotions on purpose does he at least get out like a little a little bottle and go swig swig swig and the sake brings it back yeah it's almost exactly like that perfect well i like that that's that's uh that really happens in japan you would know that's real like how does capcom keep doing this you know it's funny that you uh mentioned that justin because we're going to check in with the listeners right now oh hey listeners listeners remember you can always reach us at the email address gamescoop at ign.com just like tony from omaha nebraska did not big tony style regular tony regular tony styled him I almost made Justin do a spit take Yep I wasn't ready Regular Tony says Capcom has put out in my opinion Three of the best games of the year In Resident Evil Requiem, Pragmata and Onimusha I can't remember the last time This many quality games came out of the same developer That I was completely hyped on Except for maybe 2017 when Breath of the Wild Mario Kart 8 and Mario Odyssey came out Yeah I have two questions First do any of the Mega Cops have any Favorite overall years of gaming I know there's been some great ones 1998 comes to mind Second, what is the secret that Capcom has to making great games year after year that most other publishers just don't?

29:27Justin Davis:It's kind of crazy that they can put out this many quality games when so many others take years to put out one or two. Okay, so the first question Years, yeah, 1998 is pretty good because that's Ocarina of Time Half-Life, Metal Gear Solid StarCraft, Resident Evil 2 Tekken 3, Banjo-Kazooie, and Pokemon Red and Blue Dang 1981, that's the height of amazing arcade games. Civilization. It was like 2001 was a really good year. 2001 is Grand Theft Auto 3, Halo, Metal Gear Solid 2, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Final Fantasy 10, Silent Hill 2, Tony Hawk 3, SSX Tricky. That's 2001? Yeah. Okay, yeah.

30:06Peer Schneider:2007 is often cited. Yeah, we're in Bioshock here.

30:09Justin Davis:You guys,

30:10Peer Schneider:I feel like you guys are

30:11Justin Davis:peeking over my shoulder at my dock. 2007 is Bioshock, Bioshock, Portal, Super Mario Galaxy, Modern Warfare, Halo 3, Mass Effect, Orange Box, God of War 2, Uncharted, and Crisis. Yep.

30:23Peer Schneider:Did you say Halo 3?

30:24Justin Davis:Halo 3, yep. And then 2026, Damon. This year? I would say it's Grand Theft Auto 6 and Barbie Horse Adventure. What is it called? Barbie something time loop? Barbie Rewind. Barbie Rewind. There's Barbie Rewind and GTA. Well, I think it is worth mentioning 2023 was Baldur's Gate 3, Tears of the Kingdom, Alan Wake 2, Resident Evil 4 remake, Street Fighter 6, Mario Wonder, and Cyberpunk Phantom Liberty. That's probably the most recent year of that caliber. But the other question is, how does Capcom do it? When seemingly no one else can, how does Capcom do it? It's like, why does, how can Christopher Nolan just say, I'm only going to make good movies when other people don't do that?

31:07Why doesn't, someone

31:08Peer Schneider:else should try it. Just make good movies. Yeah. I mean, it's their engine, right? They all use the RE engine.

31:15Justin Davis:They have this

31:16Peer Schneider:engine yeah i and i don't i mean this is praise not criticism but like the games are all they all play like they're all super different like pragmata and resident evil and onimusha like they're not that you don't know oh these all feel the same but like you know the way your character moves through the world and the way that the camera works and the way that the environment's created it's like they just figured out this pipeline and they have this engine that like it's just working for them perfectly i i also think they're i mean they're very sort of they don't chase trends as much. A lot of publishers say, hey, life service games are a thing we need to play in that realm.

31:54They obviously make a lot of money for certain companies and so we need to figure out how to have a hit like that. And that can lock a studio down for years to try something that ultimately doesn't work out. But yeah, Capcom, I think, just figured out how to make a certain type of game and stick true to its roots. It's like the Yakuza team is similar where we constantly ask the Ryuga Gotoko team, right? Like where we go like, how do they make that many games? And like they don't suck, right? And they have other live service moments. I mean, obviously Monster Hunter is a really successful one. But what's the game that they did that started off in the snow with a grappling hook?

32:39Lost Planet? Yeah, yeah. Remember they made Lost Planet 2? They did three of those. Yeah, two and three were weird, live-service-y, Anthem-like games. But whatever the case, Capcom is absolutely using a design philosophy where they actually care about a hook and a quality level, and it's a lot like Nintendo. It's like when you hear Shigeru Minamoto talking about games. It's like, but what's the core of this game and what makes it fun? And they have enough people there that they're enforcing that And finding this path through these games that are, they just have some kind of loop that really draws you in.

33:19I just think they really think about that and implement it. Monster Hunter is a good example because they didn't, I mean, it's live service, but they basically said, we are going to create a communal hunting experience game where you hunt giant monsters. And it's centered around this four-player co-op mode. And they stuck true to that. They stuck true to that vision. They didn't make a hero shooter out of it. They did do some spinoffs, right? and Monster Hunter Stories is also good. Yeah, I don't know. I think it's just a well-run, smart team that focuses on making the games that they probably love to play themselves.

33:52Yeah. Whatever they did since Lost Planet and Resident Evil 5, they really got it together.

34:00Justin Davis:It began in 2017 with Resident Evil 7. Yeah, I think so.

34:05Peer Schneider:That's almost a 10-year renaissance now. I mean, the thing that makes me excited about Onimusha, this wouldn't normally be a Justin game, but there was a, oh, I wish I could give them critics. I don't remember what critic now, but someone else that reviewed the game described it as like the act of like pressing a button and swinging a sword has like never felt better. They just figure out like that feeling of like how it feels and the timing of it and the weight of it. And like, you know, they put as much kind of emphasis and attention on that moment as like Nintendo did on Mario. Exactly. A Miyamoto jump thing.

34:41Yeah.

34:42Peer Schneider:And so that really like that sold me on, like, even though this isn't normally my kind of thing, I'm like, well, okay. Like I, you know, maybe I need to be into this after all and give it a try. Yeah. I forgot to mention that I blood of dawn walker kind of like intimidates you by being like well everything you do is a sword stroke up left right or down and then there's also a defensive block upright left or down but and then they're like and you have to watch this little arrow and this little shield has to turn red but it's like it's forgiving enough that you like kind of kick butt immediately in it like it feels really good did you feel that way Damon it took I think it

35:19Justin Davis:It takes some getting used to, like the directional blocking. You have to block to the left or right. It's really successful in kicking enemies' butts, though, when you get it right. It's like the reward is incredible for it. I thought it was really cool. But I'll say about other devs. I mean, obviously, Sony's got studios like Naughty Dog. We've gotten great Naughty Dog games all in a row. We've gotten great Spider-Man games. We've gotten great Ghost of Yote. Yeah, those are years apart. We got one of them a million times in a row. But like, you know, Capcom is not just one dev team. They might all be called Capcom something.

35:54Nintendo gave us Platoon Raiders and Star Fox. And like, these are all really quality. That's the best. Fire Emblem and Ocarina of Time. Yeah. It's like Capcom is scaled to a place where they have a bunch of great development teams and they're all making great games. Like, I wish Konami was doing that, right? Like, I wish there was other companies.

36:08Justin Davis:So, yeah. This is the point I want to make. EA is the weirdest one. Like, yeah. It's the RE engine and it's the pipeline. like Justin said, they have multiple teams working on multiple games at the same time, and they set up this roadmap. So in this year alone, they have the latest entry in the long-running Resident Evil series. They have something new with Pragmata. They bring back Onimushi after 20 years, and then already next year, they have the next Resident Evil coming, and they're bringing back Mega Man. So they just have it all planned out. The difference is that Naughty Dog, who has not released a single new game this entire generation, they're about 400 to 500 people, and Capcom is 3 ,700 employees.

36:46Justin Davis:So it's just a much bigger operation. Yeah. They released some remakes in a TV show of that remake too. But when Naughty Dog is busy cooking and they're a little bit more like a rock star, right? Where they take a very long time and they, I mean, the stuff Naughty Dog sometimes does in their games is insane, right? When in a Capcom game, somebody sits down at a campfire, you know, like they sit down and then the campfire is lit in the next scene. there's a cutscene. In a Naughty Dog game, there's somebody lighting the match and the woods will start burning. It's a different sort of detail level.

37:21But when Naughty Dog is cooking, we get an Astro Bot. No, not from Naughty Dog. No, but from another studio. They have a portfolio of devs and Capcom has different teams that are also creating games.

37:36Peer Schneider:They definitely scope their games appropriately. Pragmata, How Long to Beat, says the game is 12 hours or like, you know, 16 if you want to do most of the side stuff. Like, that's like an appropriate, like, you know, you're not going to play it and feel shortchanged to be like, oh, you know, I'm bummed and this wasn't a good value for money. But it's also not, you know, they're not trying to do like just the game is budgeted appropriately. Like, you know, they've scoped the project to be just right. Dreamcast era Sega was like this. Yeah, that's a really good call. You got actually surprisingly different games where like, you know, a jet grind radio would follow a crazy taxi or something.

38:15Right. Yep. Maybe they'll come back with that too. Whereas like Square was always slower and deliberate and released a big game like every year too. Right. Like there's always been these two examples of development. But I just think Capcom and Nintendo are like these really healthy examples of the Japanese game industry. and I hope that means that there's like other people that will as Damon always says like just do that you know because it just feels good to have these like pillars of Japanese like awesome game culture again it feels great I'm hoping Konami will come back in some way but they seem like they are they seem like they're well they had a big presence at Gamescom they had an awesome Peace Walker display there was stuff everywhere they had a huge Castlevania booth how was there a Castlevania

39:01Justin Davis:a 2D Castlevania booth in 2026 that's awesome yeah i remember e3 castlevania on display where they shot fire out of the booth and it was so loud we couldn't hear anything like up into the sky like cool yeah cool the last thing i want to there that's the booth the castle it's awesome the throne uh and they're there that's probably on its way to tgs right now i think tgs is this weekend that's cool yeah the last thing i want to say about onimushi is has some of the best facial animation i've ever seen and the hero they've licensed the likeness of Toshiro Mifune. Oh, cool. Which, well, I don't know how I feel about it, actually.

39:39Justin Davis:Toshiro Mifune is like the best known Japanese samurai actor. He was in... Who's dead, right? He's been dead for 30 years. Yeah. He's been in probably 200 films, but he's most known for his Kurosawa films that he's in. Seven Samurai and... And Damon, even though we... I mean, I named my firstborn son after the director, Kurosawa Akira. Yeah. And a lot of those movies were flops. They were financial flops. So if the family of Mr. Mifune is getting something out of it now, that's wonderful. That's fine. I don't know. He's an amazing actor. He is an amazing actor. You know, likenesses are troubling.

40:17Justin Davis:Yeah, I just don't know. It's weird. He's been dead for 30 years. He's not mad about it, Damon. I know, but he's not mad about it. Like I said, I love this game and I love that actor, but I just don't know how to feel about using Other likenesses of long dead people. Other companies just steal his likeness and say it's a different dude and at least they're paying the family. I think there was an... Now I think there was a Netflix anime that did all this.

40:40Peer Schneider:Make a new guy. Make a new dude. You can make a new guy.

40:44Justin Davis:You can make a new dude. Look how cool this guy is.

40:47Peer Schneider:He's like the coolest dude of all time.

40:49Justin Davis:He is the guy. You don't need to make a new guy. If anyone doesn't know Toshiro Mifune, you should watch like Seven Samurai, Yojimbo. Rushilmour, Sanjul. Yeah, he's just the coolest dude of all time. Red beard. Insurance isn't one size fits all. And shopping for it shouldn't feel like squeezing into something that just doesn't fit. 43:28Justin Davis:speaking of japanese stuff i also finally got marvel token and that seems good okay yep it seems good you know like i'm not like a serious fighting guy but it has a it has a single player story mode you play through these like graphic novels and they use art from some like japanese manga artists so it's cool to see all that you know marvel superheroes and a manga style it's cool i mean it feels good some of the best depictions of marvel characters i've ever seen yep like marvel vs capcom was also one of my very favorite like just like make marvel characters look cool yeah it looks so cool like these characters look so cool yeah just just a cool presentation lots of fun stuff to do in the in the single player story mode and kingo has been he loves to just do training because he the the opponent doesn't fight back so he just yeah picks different characters and figures out what he can do with them and that's pretty cool he's actually figured out so many moves if i played against him he'd probably i don't know he'd probably at least give me a run for my money the point we are at when we game together is in smash brothers i can beat him but i have to try oh okay it's not it's not easy i have to actually try that's pretty cool they had a token booth um build at gamescom and it was a giant apocalypse themed egyptian like you know mutant uh the first mutant set it was really cool wait would this be an arc system works booth because playstation wasn't there i don't know that's where i missed it you'll get to this point shark jeff is that the shark's name jeff the baby land shark yeah yeah damon you'll get to a point where your kids are gonna beat you at games oh it's any day now i know i know it is i like there's certain games like i can still take them in mario kart but like my daughter destroys me in splatoon games like that yeah yeah

45:20Justin Davis:okay and that can bring us to grand theft auto 6 which we got the big uh deep dive on

45:26Peer Schneider:netflix last week i watched it i think it looks pretty good looks pretty good we got to watch that as a team on a big screen in germany uh it was very late at night there and it was really fun it was like 9 p.m yeah well it felt late because we've been up since oh yeah i'd probably been up since 4 a.m actually yeah covering the damn event and jet lagged but yeah it was really exciting to do that and you know hear people call out stuff as they notice things but also just like presentationally it felt like an engrossing cool 30 minutes to watch like it was actually like a fun it was a cool way to do rated presentation of gameplay i loved how

46:04Justin Davis:they handled it and you're like oh no i want to see more like i want it to keep going any other company would have had a voiceover being like welcome to vice city in vice city you can do this right yeah you could have done it and they would and they would explain every gameplay element where it's it's just sort of fun to watch this like how cinematic and movie like it is what i really love is um you know a lot of games nowadays do the do the 18 thing where like you wreak havoc and destruction and then the guy crawls out of the car and is like oh no he's okay it's totally fine right the marvel movies always do this where it's like uh mayhem but somehow nobody died and the superheroes are okay there's a plot point where that's not the case but in this game they just show you doing bad things i mean there are robbing places they're they're just capping people left and right they're stealing cars and all that the police come in at one point and just kill everybody immediately yeah what and even though you don't need to know these characters you're instantly on their side still you know like yep i feel like i want to play this game i love these characters i love the way the world looks and how reactive it is in general yeah i like i like these characters a lot it solves one of my main problems with gta5 is that those three main characters never stopped arguing that whole game i was really sick of it yeah now these characters It's like GameScoop.

47:26Justin Davis:You felt like you were just watching. This is just an episode of GameScoop. What are you talking about? No, GameScoop is more like, we're more like Jason and Lucia, all of us. Oh, okay, okay.

47:35Peer Schneider:I think they're great characters. Like, they're so well characterized, even in just the little 25 minutes. And like, some people are sort of like, oh, Jason's just, you know, plank of wood. Like, he's just boring. I'm like, he's clearly, he's an introvert. Like, he's an awkward, introverted dude. And Lucia's in the driver's seat. And like, if you rewatch that with like that in mind, You'll see so many, like the opening moment is like the guy says first door on the right. And then they walk to the first door on the right. And Jason's like this door, right? Like he's immediately always like checking, you know, for approval.

48:07Peer Schneider:And so I think that they're both written with like so much, like the game is so unsubtle, but also so subtle and kind of mature in its storytelling and its presentation in a lot of ways. And that's a real tricky tightrope to walk that they manage to do. It's like, how are you telling this kind of deeply mature and personal story? And then it's also just so loud and silly. And the B-roll that we're watching right now is just the really on-the-nose parody of the commercials that are in the game. They do both. They straddle that line so well. And then the confidence in the characters goes down to you see scenes where Lucia wears a wig.

48:45and said, will you wear wigs? When will you wear wigs? She wears a wig and then like different clothes the entire time, which is like, it used to be that your character, in order to be recognizable, had to have the same clothes always, right? Like Mario is like a certain color scheme or Link is. And in this, they just, they have so much confidence in their characters and you being able to understand who's who that they show you just constant costume changes and hairstyle changes.

49:11Justin Davis:Yeah, Sam and I were talking about that. it's it's lucia appears almost it's different in almost every scene she's always i just wonder if that's like the customization which is but she's a gangster too right like it makes sense yeah yeah i think it's great and it does show the customization and they're probably doing that with jason too but you just can't tell because he's always just some like big dude he's like oh but we we're dressing him in his hawaii you know 5-0 outfit today but it's like everything they were clearly pretending to be professionals at one point and they're all dressed up right like yeah that was great but like even just like looking at them driving around like right now like it looks so good and it was captured on a base ps5 i had i can't believe my launch ps5 is

49:51Peer Schneider:going to be able to do this yeah yep yep they're just like like there's no like on the one hand this is the most impressive video game we've ever seen but then it's also kind of like it's less impressive like there's no secrets or shortcuts it's just this is what unlimited time and unlimited money gets you is just even like you don't need to care about open world games or gta one-handed

50:15Justin Davis:crime games yeah lucia one-handed cognitive shotgun is so good effortlessly cool right yeah

50:21Peer Schneider:just even if this isn't your thing at all just from a standpoint of like commercial art is just there's never been anything like this of just thousands of people working on something for a decade so it's like i'm intrigued by this as a as a product just on that level and then i'm you know I do like the GTA games a lot. So it's like, yeah, obviously I can enjoy it in a more kind of straight up way as well. So my favorite shot in the whole presentation is when they just showed this like two seconds of light gliding through the Everglades area. Yes. And it's like really clear water. You can see a manatee off to the right.

50:54It's like on a there's a hovercraft and, you know, that's what they didn't show in this. Right. Is that they showed a bunch of like a kind of heisty stuff, getaways, driving, conversational moments story-driven moments relationship moments and then it's all set in this you know guaranteed to be incredible open world that's not only in a city it's like scuba too underwater i mean they show just yeah just to do like oh yeah by the way you scuba dive right like yeah yeah that's that's what's so exciting is that they can't possibly you know all these other games were like well i don't need to see more of this just give me the game like I understand that like for this though, like I'll never see everything in this game.

51:38You know, like I'm never going to see it all.

51:41Peer Schneider:Usually you have to pick between like, you know, wide as an ocean or shallow as a puddle, right? Whereas like GTA is like wide as an ocean and deep as an ocean. Like it's just like the most gigantic world, but also the deepest level of detail. And also like the new rumors, like 700 interiors of like buildings you can go inside. It's just, it's crazy. Like the hair physics are crazy. And like I said, I don't want to diminish like the artistry on display is incredible, but it is it is just time. It's just time and manpower and money and no AI. And they just did it like there's no shortcuts. Just take the time to do it.

52:17Peer Schneider:It's unbelievable. And it's also capturing like a it feels modern and referential to our time in a way where they had to make those decisions 10 years ago to make it feel that way, which is like makes it even more impressive. but that's because it's an amalgamation of crime movies, right? So it's got all that going for it. And then it's also a parody of, let's face it, America, right? And America has a lot of like consistency to it. And it's, you know, like gas stations and guns and driving. It's very funny how that's emphasized. I know it's funny that the most American game comes out of Scotland too.

52:54Yeah. Yeah. But I mean, it gives them a distance and a perspective where they can do the parody, right?

53:00Peer Schneider:Yeah. They said in an interview Rockstar did when they did their press last week or whenever it was, they had a team of people that were embedded and lived in Miami and just a research team. That's all they did. They said they spoke to criminals and spoke to gang members and spoke to police and everyone. They just did it because that's how else do you make it authentic? you know um and and then they they also talked about the slang like they they really have to thread the needle between being current um but without without being too current right they it needs to have a little bit more of a timeless feeling it actually gives me chills to think about a game like this coming out this year in a couple months like it's so exciting yeah i know you know

53:41Justin Davis:and it's i'm kind of a daunting time it's like that thing it's like right before that thanksgiving week where typically people get some time off but yeah it's gonna be a lot to there's gonna be a lot of work to do with this game i think yeah that's that's true plus we have to finish castlevania yeah luckily we're here for christmas break i'm gonna finish it during christmas break i'm sure yeah yeah that's always a fun i mean those are that's also just a nice like nod to all of our like cultural pasts is that like there's just like this big game that you're gonna play from like thanksgiving to christmas yeah like we all did that for ocarina of time you know and it's like it's it's really fun to think about that release window i think like an underrated part

54:21Peer Schneider:of gta that i'm excited about is again we're like seeing more details is like some influencers went to go see it too so like there's an ig and you know rachel weber got to go see the game and we're so we're just learning more and more as those details trickle out and like it does sound like this story is going to be more kind of uh player driven or like at some point it sounds like the story is like well you just need to now raise ten thousand dollars and go do it however you want that's cool that's the open world right yeah that's like the crime like gta games have always been sort of oddly disconnected like the story missions weren't super connected to like the moment to moment it felt like this very different thing and so tying those together of this is such a weird connection in it to make but like baldur's gate 2 does that like it releases you in the world and at one point you have to raise a ton of money that's true and then it's and then it's like just go play the game you know and like so if gta really does that and gives you a reason you know to hold up liquor stores and like figure out what your path is going to be through that world it's like that's so clever and so smart yeah i love this whole sequence by the way yeah because the cars flip real good and like the fact that that is just that that's gameplay obviously it's an on-railed sequence but it's like it just again feels like so slick and well constructed and like when when they take off and they drive a lot of games would not show the wind on the characters when they drive with their windows open and all that stuff, right?

55:43Like there's all this like nuance and you don't even see it anymore because it just feels like a movie, right? Like a gangster movie. My close runner up shot was when Lucia's jumping off of a tower and a base jump and they switch characters because I know we all want to see how the characters switch. But like, what happens to Lucia at that point? There's no one there to open her parachute. I mean, there must be some like AI system for the characters because they seem to be persistent because you can keep switching between them. That's fascinating. There's never been a thing like that. Yeah.

56:20Justin Davis:I am super excited for it. Same. Looks great.

56:27But we've buried the lead

56:30Justin Davis:on the video game news this week because Nintendo Switch Online, NES Classics have been updated with Ninja Gaiden 3. Ikari Warriors and RC Pro-Am 2. They made an RC Pro-Am 2? Yeah, it improves on a lot of stuff. But most people like micro-machines better, but I think it's good. Is this also by Rare? Do you know, Sam? Rare did the first one. Yeah, I think so. Okay.

56:57Peer Schneider:I've never...

56:58Justin Davis:Okay, Joe says it's Rare.

57:00Peer Schneider:I think I know more than the average person about video games. I don't know that I ever knew there was an RC Pro-Am 2. It came out late enough that everybody was focused on Super Nintendo. cool all right but that means like it's like one of those really high quality 90s nes games it's

57:16Justin Davis:cool yeah did rc pro m ever get a nintendo power cover sam yeah because i learned about it somehow it must have been covered all my friends liked it yeah we liked it um ninja god in three is good ikari warriors is a game that i had and i loved as a kid i only learned that it was bad when i grew up the likes of like jeremy parish it's supposed to be really terrible i'm sure it is i have not played it since i was a kid but yeah it's a i'm sure every every kid growing up in the 80s has like a game that was the only game they had they had for their console and they love it yeah and then years later they go back and they go oh no what what what was that doing yeah gremlins 2 on the nes man you know what's weird about rc prom so rc prom came out in 1988 and or early and so that's the year that nintendo power came out so they they would have covered it in those first couple issues as like class maybe a classified information or yeah um counselor's corner or something so if i listened to a to a game scoop a couple of weeks ago you brought up wait is this iron tank you brought up hero from activision yeah you played that you're the only person i've ever met in my life who's also played that game yeah that was one of those games that i had that was Wait, but did you have it on Atari 2600?

58:34Justin Davis:I had the home computer version. Yeah, something like Amstrad or... No, Atari computer. Yeah, that's a cool game. I would like to hear Per Schneider's games of his life someday. We'll do that someday. There's so many years of my life, Damon. That was Ikari Warriors. Oh, that was Ikari. You're a tank. Runs out of fuel. When it runs out of fuel, it explodes. That's so fun. What a fun game. it's a manufacturing defect for them let that be a lesson to you kids check your check your gas ikari warriors it's obviously like a commando rambo ripoff with like super macho military dudes in the jungle and then ikari warriors 2 is you're fighting aliens in outer space what didn't it have a really dumb cover too like the box no it's good art no it's great yeah this is good art i mean it's dumb but good but it's not the one it's not like megaman dumb okay not Not derpy like that.

59:33Justin Davis:Okay. All right. Extracurricular activities. On my flights to and from Germany, I watched two movies. Yeah, there it is. There he is. I watched two movies that attempted to revive classic fantasy franchises and they both bombed at the box office. Yeah, okay. And one of them was better than the other one. So I watched Masters of the Universe. It's okay. Yep, I did too. I just watched it on the plane. Skeletor is the best part. It was pretty good. I thought it was, well, Well, maybe it's because the other movie I watched was a lot better. But, you know, they lean on humor that I don't think always works.

1:00:09No, but it serves as a way to get all the He-Man references in in a cute way.

1:00:16Justin Davis:I mean, they have a recurring joke where, you know, the characters have, this is how they were named back in the day in the 80s. They were named names like Fisto and Ram Man. So they have a recurring joke making fun of their names. but in this reality, they're not the real names. They're just nicknames that He-Man gave them when he was a kid. And I just didn't... As a six-year-old. They just didn't need to explain all that away. It's like, if you're watching this movie, you're probably a fan of He-Man and you don't care that they have goofy names. It's nice. You don't need to explain it all. I thought that stuff was fine.

1:00:43Peer Schneider:Yeah, no, that's also a very Marvel-y like Doctor Strange, huh? Like they have to like lampshade how, you know, the parts of it that don't work when you're trying to actually do it straight up. Yeah.

1:00:54Justin Davis:But like Justin said, Jared Leto's actually good as Skeletor. Although, if I didn't know it was Jared Leto, I would never have known, because he doesn't look like him. It doesn't matter that it's Jared Leto, but he does a great job. He was obviously a fan. There's been a lot of anti-negative opinion of his recently.

1:01:13Peer Schneider:But just bafflingly, he crushed the role. Jared Leto as Skeletor crushed it.

1:01:20Justin Davis:Also, the fight scenes are pretty good. and that's like that goes so far that goes so far for me well almost everything we said could have applied to the dnd movie too that's the other movie i watched okay that's a good one dnd dnd is

1:01:33Peer Schneider:much better it's much better i don't know if it's much better it's much better yeah it's much better

1:01:38Justin Davis:because sam it's the same directors as game night so it's like oh yeah it's great i i completely agree that it's a good movie but i think they both are pretty stupid and i like them both well uh i know i think i think uh dungeons and dragons wasn't much more successful i like that one yeah that was really that was just fun what a bummer there actually works yeah we actually just put up an article today i think that's a good point we actually just put up an article article today the director saying that he think it was bad timing it opened the same week as the mario movie but there is another one no not right now but see that's what's so that's what's so confounding because like after stranger things there was a dnd renaissance it's not like there lots of people who love D &D, where it's like Masters of the Universe is one of those sort of like, from my childhood, I still remember Gamble, right?

1:02:25And I think they misread the tea leaves with the Barbie movie blowing up. You know what's weird? So I agree. D &D was really well timed and it deserved better. But I think T-Man would have done better in 2000, right? Like it missed the window of early 80s nostalgia, people having either 25 year old period like that's what they needed to it's just it was i i don't even know he-man like i don't know he-man at all yeah it's like one of those things like when pirates of the caribbean came out it was like the right time for a pirates movie and then others tried right and and they didn't work and there were some decent pirate movies that that didn't perform and like i think this is unfortunately what happened with dnd yeah and i didn't know uh hugh grant was in and he was great.

1:03:12Oh yeah, he was great. That's right. I watched only terrible movies. Usually I watch bad movies on an airplane because I don't want to watch a great cinematic movie with a crappy sound setup and stuff. They're airplane movies. But I did watch, I watched a Dutch movie called Sound Man about a Foley during, right at the beginning of World War II in Holland. It was a Dutch movie. It was really good, really excellent movie. Sounds awesome. And I watched it. I always have to watch a Jason Statham movie on an airplane. There's always a new one too. This time he's a lighthouse keeper, basically. And I don't want to spoil anything, but he's got special skills.

1:03:48He's not just a lighthouse keeper. Like stuff happens. What? And he may have been a special forces guy. I know this. I can't believe it. But I'm just a simple lighthouse keeper.

1:03:58Peer Schneider:Won't they just leave me alone? I feel like him and Liam Neeson are just making the same movie over and over with a different profession. Like they're a baker or they beekeeper. But they were always a special forces agent. Yeah. Anyway, that movie was not great. On my extensive journeys, I watched all of the second season of Fallout and all of the second season of X-Men 97, and both weren't very good, but I did enjoy watching them. Okay. Yep. Yeah. X-Men 97 deserves better, man. It has its moments, and it's cute, but I love X-Men. I love the aspect of reviving that series. It really has potential, but there's a lot of layered characters coming back to life at this season.

1:04:40It's just like, oh my God, why are we even killing characters anymore in Marvel? Like, what are we doing? Fallout season two was a bummer. It wasn't bad. It was just sort of like the first season was so strong. I don't get it. It's acted well. It looks pretty good. Like what? They're trying to like set up death clauses. It's like mystical start of all of Fallout mythology. Well, they're pain in the butt in the game, to be fair. Yeah. No, it's not that. It's that they're like, I saw a beast in the snow. There's like this like origin story to death clause that are something like he, it's just very strange.

1:05:14I still had a good time. There's still has good moments. I don't think the humor lands in this show. Sometimes it's really mean and it's sometimes it's like, and that works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't. And then usually it's about gross violence, but there's a lot of the show that like, no, I watched the whole season, as I said, so yeah,

1:05:32Justin Davis:I never made, I never got around to season two and it doesn't sound like I need to. No, no, no, you're fine.

1:05:49Justin Davis:All right. That brings us to Video Game 20 Questions. And our suggestion suite comes from Kurt from Kelowna, British Columbia. Kelowna, one of those. Kurt says, I'm a huge fan. Haven't missed an episode since 2015. First time ever emailing, but I finally had to after hearing the praise for Pikmin 4. Once again, without mentioning its multiplayer. So someone wrote in asking what Pikmin they should start with. We said four. That's because, and this is a fun fact, it doesn't have multiplayer. According to Kurt, it does. Pikmin is my favorite series with Pikmin 1 being my all-time favorite game. It is endlessly replayable.

1:06:25Justin Davis:I love the single player of Pikmin 4, but why doesn't anyone ever mention what an absolute stinker the multiplayer is? Pikmin 2 introduced a great head-to-head battle mode and 3 improved it in every way. It is the best competitive couch multiplayer of the 21st century in my unbiased and accurate opinion. My best friend and I still battle each other weekly, and four replaced it with a tacked-on timed coin collection game. That's right. Okay. It has something. I actually, I really like two. The only problem was it was split screen and you could see whatever the other player was doing. So, yeah. You're probably getting Pikmin.

1:06:59Pikmin's fun. I'm really happy that people play these multiplayer modes that I would never even select on the screen. It's fine with me. Go nuts. I mean, if you've ever played Warcraft or StarCraft multiplayer, there is something to these games where you have this sort of resource gathering activity and then you bring in your forces when they're big enough and go up against each other. Pikmin is a little bit more of like you want to get as much crap back as possible and then the wily enemy gets in the way. I like these modes. They could be really strong online. But most of this was before Nintendo had voice chat and a decent online experience.

1:07:42Maybe Pikmin 5 will be the ultimate multiplayer showdown. Can you imagine two whistles all the time, though? That's a lot of whistles. Double the whistles. I think it'd be great if Nintendo stepped into the void that StarCraft has left, right? I was thinking about it.

1:07:58Justin Davis:I think we have another article today about how it sounds like they're going to announce a new StarCraft game. It's so strange that, like, I remember spending hundreds of hours on StarCraft 1 and 2. It's so strange that went away. This was the biggest esports game on the planet, and it filled stadiums, and then Blizzard just went, nah, it's over.

1:08:17Peer Schneider:Well, it only made a billion dollars instead of a million billion dollars. It's not worth pursuing. Yep, yep. Are we 20 questions?

1:08:27Justin Davis:Yes, and your hint is that Kurt's message has some kind of a hint. as to what the answer is. But what's the hint? It's probably that he really loved Metroid Prime 2's multiplayer game. Does this game have multiplayer? Yes.

1:08:45Peer Schneider:Metroid Prime 2. Does this game have couch co-op multiplayer?

1:08:53Peer Schneider:Not co-op, just couch multiplayer. Like split screen or handing off the controller or is it an online multiplayer game is what you're asking, right? Split screen.

1:09:02Justin Davis:I'd have to look it up and I'm going to Justin and Sam are going to be garbled because I'm not holding my IFB yeah dear listeners what you're not seeing is that Damon has to always hold up his little receiver for his headpiece because there's some weird interference in the building probably just the cat the answer is yes it is couch multiplayer? it has offline multiplayer

1:09:26Peer Schneider:yep yep yep yep that's two did this game originally come out on a Nintendo console? No. Oh, okay. I thought it was going to be a GameCube game. I thought it was going to be Super Monkey Ball 2. Excellent multiplayer. Yeah, had monkey target. Incredible. Do you play as a human?

1:09:48Justin Davis:No.

1:09:51Peer Schneider:Maybe it's Fusion Frenzy. What do you play as that? A metal blob or something? I don't know what you are in that game. that's a deep cut should we ask era if you want did this game come out after the year 2000 yes that's 5 Fusion Frenzy Dream is alive did this game originally come out on an Xbox console yes was it an exclusive for Xbox I should ask that I haven't heard anybody say Fusion Frenzy in like 20 years but Miranda's on your team Miranda mentions it she mentions it a lot

1:10:31Justin Davis:no it was not an Xbox exclusive

1:10:33Peer Schneider:oh rip

1:10:38Peer Schneider:Castle Crashers I don't know was this game originally released in downloadable form no oh that's everybody's favorite question was this an indie game no definitive um So a multi-platform game after 2000s, but didn't come out on Nintendo platforms, has couch co-op. Was this developed in Japan?

1:11:04Justin Davis:No, that's five. Oh, that's ten. Then we get to ask my favorite question. Did this company have E3 press conferences in the window that this game came out? No. So it's not... It eliminates a lot of companies. It's not Bethesda, Konami, AA, UB, Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft. It's not Japanese.

1:11:26Peer Schneider:I think it's TimeSplitters 2, except that came out on the GameCube. Is this game a first - or third-person shooter? No. It's not TimeSplitters. No, it couldn't have been anyway. It's not a first - or third-person shooter. Why did Damon have to look up whether it has couch multiplayer? Right. I wouldn't know that off the top of my head. But he knew it was multiplayer. Yeah. So it must have been also online. I mean, yeah, I wouldn't know if it is. Maybe it's a driving game. Maybe it's a strategy game. Like Phantasy Star Online or something. Because the Pikmin thing, right? Real-time strategy. Is this a driving strategy or platformer?

1:12:12Justin Davis:No.

1:12:13Peer Schneider:Oh, boy. What? Maybe it's Dynasty Warriors. Maybe it's a fighting game. Is Dynasty Warriors a multiplayer? I don't know. Yeah.

1:12:29Peer Schneider:Yeah, fighting game is a pretty obvious blind spot that I skipped. But I guess it would always have offline. Always offline. Yeah. Is this a fighting or survival crafting game? No. I like how you just add a random genre to it. Yeah. Yeah. would you would you describe the the multiplayer in this as competitive yes that's 15 maybe it's sport oh sports is pretty good too i didn't i didn't i feel like i botched this i didn't ask very good questions like nfl blitz something like that oh yeah or whatever madden i would like does madden have couch co-op i can't answer that question well yeah of course it does you can i I mean, does it?

1:13:18Peer Schneider:Couch competitive. Yeah, you can absolutely. Yes. Yeah, they've always had it in. It's like you see all the players at all times and you're controlling, just like hockey. AI says yes, Madden has couch co-op. Do we ask if it's a sports game? Should we? No. Yeah, but add on. It's competitive, not co-op. We're talking about a competitive game. Huh? Yeah, yeah. Ask about sports. Is it a sports game, Damon? No. not even extreme sports either Tony Hawk has some split screen

1:13:51Justin Davis:did you lock down an era? we said after 2000 and

1:13:57Peer Schneider:that it was on an Xbox console

1:14:00Justin Davis:but not exclusively

1:14:02Peer Schneider:and not on a Nintendo console

1:14:03Justin Davis:that was never a question yeah we knew it was there was some Nintendo question wasn't there?

1:14:12Peer Schneider:Yeah, we asked if it was on a Nintendo platform and the answer was no. As an exclusive, I think you asked, right? Oh, whatever. Okay. Did we? We'll have to rewind the tape and check. There's no way to tell. There's no way to know. Well, I think we're boned. Yeah. But just having a... I mean, it could be... Is there anything that prevents this game from being something that literally came out last year or this year? What about a shmup? What about like orbitals or Ikaruga? What about if the hint is that like it's from the same year as Pikmin 4? Yeah, I don't know what the hint would be. I was thinking about that.

1:14:51I think the hint is it's probably not known for multiplayer. Like that's how I would interpret that. But I also just made that up.

1:15:01Peer Schneider:Shooter, what genre, Stephen, we have? You're right. Pinball. It's Metroid Prime Pinball. That is co-op. That is multiplayer. I would say it's Banjo-Tooie because that has a great offline multiplayer mode. And by great, I mean terrible. Yeah. Donkey Kong 64. Donkey Kong 64 had multiplayer too. But we asked about platforming. Yeah, exactly. And it was no. So we ruled out platformer, sports, survival. Fighting. Driving. Driving. Fighting. And strategy. So that leaves, honestly, I mean, it leaves. it looks like action first person action shooter well we asked about shooters too and it was not a shooter no or just like the genre defying nonsense multiplayer that we're focusing on multiplayer but it's really just a single player game yeah maybe it's just a party game yeah oh yeah maybe there was a multiplayer party game in it but like the game is like you know but there's only one party game on xbox and that's fusion frenzy is this a is this a party or pinball game no oh my god not a party open but there's nothing left Damon there's nothing left I should have added shmup onto that question I want to add shmup onto that question

1:16:19Peer Schneider:can we do it can we allow it because you said shooter maybe does that mean it's a shmup and is that why because if the answer was no I feel like Damon would have said no maybe it's a shmup maybe it's Ikaruga yeah Don't you play as a human in Ikaruga? No. You play as a ship. Yeah. You're a ship with frothing demand increasing. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Did you ask if it's a shmup or did you not ask? No, I was trying to get Damon to give us a gimme, but he wouldn't do it. How many questions are there? You have two questions and a guess. Is it a shmup? Nope. Don't want to!

1:16:58Justin Davis:Damn! That's why I was trying to just let it go. Just move on. You made it all mysterious. Can you think of a shmup that's competitive multiplayer?

1:17:09Peer Schneider:We don't know that it's competitive. I literally asked if it was competitive multiplayer, and I keep on correcting everybody.

1:17:15Justin Davis:I think he said, would you describe the multiplayer as competitive? Well, there's the one on Atari with the tanks.

1:17:24Peer Schneider:No, I can't. I can't. What about tower defense? Does that count as strategy? Yeah, I would say. Maybe it's Anomaly, Warzone Earth. I don't know, man. You don't play as a human. There's Cozy, yeah? There's like your Animal Crossings. Competitive Animal Crossing. Not competitive. There are fishing tournaments. Racing, flying, there's Ace Combat. That's a shooter. I mean, I'd just give up, I think.

1:18:00I don't know. is this based on a license no that brings you to a guess but i can reveal it if there is no guess pac-man championship edition 2 it was on an xbox platform championship edition 2 is not a terrible

1:18:15Peer Schneider:guess what is it uh geometry wars oh but no yeah no but it's not downloadable we asked about downloadable and that's an exclusive pac-man was too yeah ultimate uf yeah what about uh like a like a you know Monster Hunter or something like that Xbox remember yeah it didn't oh wait yeah they guessed it never never programmed Xbox ever Nintendo console yeah I don't even know what to guess this is like we literally said every genre ever invented so this must be a really new genre

1:18:50Justin Davis:you definitely didn't oh my god maybe it's a Souls-like that's an action game oh you didn't say action it's probably a hack and slash or something okay you guys ready to hear okay yeah tell us this is a 2007 xbox 360 and ps3 game uh good year from a time when uh every game shipped with tacked on multiplayer modes that no one cared about so you hon you got way too absorbed with the multiplayer yeah part of this that that was not actually an important part of the package kurt says he picked this game because it's a fun and silly pikmin style an evil pikmin style game ah overlord overlord overlords yeah totally over though it's great it is great yeah it is they made overlord and overlord 2 they made one i think see i think they made one for ds and then they made one nobody played and they might have ported one to the wii as well what is this genre

1:19:47Peer Schneider:action rpg real time strategy the genre is is a bunch of guys running around yeah a bunch of little guys bunch of little guys running around pikmin is like an rts action game though yeah

1:19:59Justin Davis:yeah yeah i said you don't play as a human i don't think you do i don't think you're a human

1:20:04Peer Schneider:you're an you're an overland i think you were a human you're like a different type of demon than the demons you control well they're like gremlins kind of basically yeah anyway this is

1:20:16Justin Davis:I like these games a lot. This is like our Man Eater today. Man Eater is like this level of game, this tier of game, and we hardly ever get them. We used to get these games every other week back then. Yeah. Yep. Yep. They're all mobile now. Well, this developer is Triumph Studios. They're still around. What's that 4x game, Age of Mythology? Is that what it is? They just make those now. Age of Mythologies, I think. And then this was published by Codemasters, which is also still around, but I think they just put out F1 games. I didn't know they actually carried objects like Pikmin. Didn't Codemasters get bought by EA?

1:20:52Justin Davis:Yeah, Codemasters under EA. Yeah, yeah. There's four different colors of minions, Sam, and each one has a different ability. It's just 100 % a Pikmin clone. Evil Pikmin. Yep. Evil Pikmin. That's great. Man, I had totally forgotten this exists. That's awesome. Good games, good games. Yeah. Nicely attempt. Thank you for the suggestion, Kurt, in British Columbia. viewers, listeners, if you have your own suggestions for video game 20 questions, email them to me at the email address, gamescoop at igin.com. And that's all the scoops that we have for you this week. Thank you, Pear. Thank you, Sam. Thank you, Justin.

1:21:25Justin Davis:Thank you to Jobert working behind the scenes to make this episode possible. My name is Damon. This is IGN Game Scoop. And we're out.

1:21:47Peer Schneider:We should have asked if the multiplayer mode was totally tacked on and pointless.

1:21:51Justin Davis:That should be one of your running questions. Oh, my God. I can't believe you never played... Yeah, we sometimes ask that, like, was multiplayer the focus of this game? It's definitely, I think... Yeah, you've used that before. I can't believe, Sam, you never played Pikmin's multiplayer, the, like, cherry, carrying cherries around and shit. It was so cool. I remember them previewing it. I think we played it in the office a little bit for three. I gotta go. Alright, see you guys. Bye, Justin. Was that the Wii U one? Thanks, Sam. Awesome. Bye. Hope you feel better, Sam. I know. Bye. Later. Later.
