In short

The episode of Game Scoop focuses on Nintendo’s big week, especially the Ocarina of Time remake reveal, plus quick takes on other game news. Hosts Damon Hatfield and Nick Limone are joined by Sam Claiborne and Justin Davis.

Guests’ backgrounds

Damon Hatfield is the host. Nick Limone is a longtime IGN game reviewer who discusses having played Wolverine early and aligning with IGN’s score. Sam Claiborne and Justin Davis are IGN staff who comment on Nintendo presentations and gameplay details.

Key claims and notable examples

  • Metal Slug Ultimate Collection (Nintendo Direct) is praised as a definitive M2-made compilation, including a “location tested” Metal Slug 1 version where you can’t exit the tank.
  • Ocarina of Time remake: looks graphically high-fidelity (textures, HDR-like feel), with a “lived-in” world and major remade areas like Hyrule Castle Town being “unrecognizable” except for key shops/people.
  • Discussion centers on changes: free camera, a jump button, physics-based puzzle adjustments (e.g., ladder/falling mechanics), and new/altered dungeon traversal.
  • Release timing: November 5; physical editions and a large file size (27GB) are mentioned.

Other segments

  • Metroid Ravenous (sequel to Metroid Dread) praised for darker tone; release date January 28.
  • Wolverine review debate: generally “six out of ten,” with complaints about repetitive combat/limited variety but praise for gore, fatalities, and X-Men lore setup.

1:16Justin Davis:What's up, everybody? Welcome to IJ and Gamescoop. I'm your host, Damon Hatfield, and joining me here in studio is Nick Limone. I'm back, baby. We're also joined by Sam Claiborne. fact of the show it's pronounced ocarina now and justin davis scoop yeah great show for you this week so much to talk about oh my gosh so much going on our review of wolverine is out nick has beaten wolverine huge news about hideo kojima's next game jumping ship from playstation to xbox and we had two nintendo directs this week new metroid new kirby so much more but first it finally happened we finally got the big reveal the beloved classic returns the metal slug ultimate collection oh i thought you're gonna go with star fox adventure well that too dude the metal slug collection looks so good it does and of course i kid of course the zelda is the big topic we'll talk about in just a moment but i am genuinely excited for the metal slug ultimate collection it's a few of these collections right but this one has some like demos or something this one has more definitive yeah this is more of a definitive collection and includes the the version that they originally location tested of the metal slug one where apparently you're only the tank you can't get out of the tank very very in the hunt but tank yeah in the hunt but tank um yeah this is just an awesome collection it even includes metal slug advance in there oh yeah yeah that's cute and it's being done by m2 which anything perfect anything that they're yeah taken care of i i have full confidence in i mean they've done so many old game ports, but recently they did the Castlevania Dominus collection, the Castlevania Advance collection, the Darius Cosmic collection.

2:51Justin Davis:So they know what they're doing. This is in good hands. I don't think I'd play that Aliens one. Was this the Nintendo Direct or the Sony one? This is the Nintendo one. You haven't played Metal Slug X?

3:01Sam Claiborn:I feel like that's the most prolific one. The one that you see out in the wild the most often. Yeah, I remember it being in arcades too, but like for some reason... My favorite animation in a video game is when you turn into a zombie, you throw a grenade, but you do the vomit and it's like blood vomit that clears the screen. It's so good. Oh, it's the best.

3:19Justin Davis:I would hope everyone in Scoop Nation is well-versed in Metal Slug, but if you aren't, it's just they're run and gun arcade games with just some of the best pixel art of all time. Isn't that gallery presentation great? It's so cool. Little clamshells from like, I guess they just look like Neo Geo, right? Dude, the best pixel art animation. It's so good. And they're also pretty gory. Even from the first one, there's like... It's pretty upsetting. A lot of it. I was like,

3:43Sam Claiborn:How can they just throw this at the Mexican restaurant? I got people vomiting blood up and getting stabbed in the stomach. It's got kind of Nazi imagery everywhere.

3:52Justin Davis:There's a dip switch to turn it off, and I feel like more often than not, if I find a metal slug cabinet in the wild, it's got the blood turned off, and I'm like, oh, man.

3:59Sam Claiborn:I'm just going to flip it back on. You have our permission to flip it back on. Yeah, I'll tell you a secret about arcade machines. This is different than pinball, but arcade machines, everybody lost the key to the back of it where you would change the dip switches. For many, many years, they're usually secured with a Phillips screw. Okay. Just bring a screwdriver with you. Just mess with those dip switches all you want. You have our permission. We cannot be held liable for anything that happens as a result of this. Put Pac-Man on dime play.

4:33Justin Davis:By the way... Tell him Nick Limone sent you. He's back, baby. Sam and Justin, we have this new uh crushed ice machine here in the office and it's so nice it makes perfect ice wow i look so tiny wait also hold on didn't you guys get a pizza party today too in the office yeah we did what the hell yeah crushed ice and pizza i said i mean we're better than this we're living the pizza good it was good it was good i had a uh meat lovers and then like a barbecue chicken pizza it was good oh that barbecue chicken pizza always brings me back okay ocarina of time remake uh big reveal this week uh looks good to me i i'm excited there's some there's some discussion to be had about maybe the way link link looks young link looks but i overall i think it's that's the one thing we saw before though why are people complaining now we get a much better like you know view of it now he's there's so much there's so much texture on his hat and then it just doesn't fit with like the rest of the world and the other npcs like it's just something a little bit strange about that specifically yeah he actually like a little cupid he looks like it like literally like a two-year-old my my friend's two-year-old kid he looks literally like that um but this game like nintendo's never made a game that looks like this i don't think like no just with the level of detail

5:56Sam Claiborn:in the world here very high fidelity it feels very like 4k hdr enabled like you know all i mean it's Yeah, it's been 30 years of Nintendo being behind graphically, right? And look, they still are, right? Like if you compare this to like a really, you know, I don't know, like a graphical showcase on the PS5 or PC, like it still is. But like we've just advanced, like the advancements are coming so slowly and far apart now that like Nintendo is back in sort of like the graphics race again a little bit. It's great. Yeah, and it's Switch 2, right? So it's like it's development focused platform up Switch 2.

6:31They didn't have to port it backwards like Tears of the Kingdom originally, which got a really nice upgrade too, but this looks better. And I play a lot of PS5 games, and some of them don't look as good as this, and some of them look better. It's incredible to see Nintendo at the top of their game. And they've been doing beautiful games. Metro looked really good last year. But Metro wasn't made by Nintendo properly.

6:52Justin Davis:That's a little bit... So that's just a question I have. Is this being made entirely internally at Nintendo? I would assume so. Oh, I would assume not. I don't think so. So I think it's completely farmed out. I assume it's one of their sister, like Bandai Namco, or somebody is doing a lot of heavy lifting on it.

7:08Sam Claiborn:I heard rumors that it was Monolith Soft working on the Ocarina of Time. That's what I heard rumors were. Wow, Xenoblade? But they're making Xenoblades. Well, Monolith also worked on Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, so it's not out of the realm of possibility. And this does feel a little bit too large scale for Grezzo. I mean, we know Numo worked on it. Yeah, exactly. He's in the video talking about it like like he's been working on it. So like that's an argument for it being like heavily Nintendo overseen or done internally. And then the argument about Link and Zelda's faces being what Miyamoto would have wanted from the, you know, these kind of Japanese historical puppets is also kind of like saying that he probably had a hand in it.

7:49And that's Japanese developers saying that it's not just some like chuds on the Internet that is so like there's there's a lot of hints here that maybe that is heavily Nintendo. my uncle at Nintendo told me yeah exactly I can't decide which I guess maybe this maybe this does not make for a great podcast discussion but like I can't decide whether I think it looks good or not like sometimes I'm like this looks incredible like this is what I've always wanted Zelda and then sometimes it looks a little bit like the like the Zelda and HD Unreal Engine 5 video like pirate videos that have been on YouTube for a long time where everything looks plasticky and weird I think it looks a lot

8:26Sam Claiborn:better than those unreal engine tech demo things just because i think that's what's gonna bring up there's a lot more added texture and i think there's a lot more depth in the environments in a way that i think is adding meaningfully to the game because i i guess my worst case scenario was that it's just the same geometry layouts of the original ocarina of time just in 4k with high res textures and all that stuff but it seems like they are embellishing and taking advantage of the the processing power and the ram that's available to the console and it feels like they are making it feel in the way breath of the wild feels like a lived in world it feels like ocarina is finally a place where people live and inhabit and there's history here and i really appreciate that added touch so if i had to describe the aesthetic i feel like they took everything and just stretched it like stress death mountain is stretched upwards and you can see a mesa in the background gerda valley and then hyrule field is a little bit spread out and then there's geometry for you know the the the farm and the towns and everything that are in the right places, but they look further away.

9:29And I think there's more distance. And I think, you know, I was afraid of the same thing that it would just be a code of polygons and pixels over what was there. And no, like somebody had to like completely make this game from scratch. And I think the best example is, is, is the Hyrule castle town. Like that is unrecognizable except for who's there, where like, you know, like the shops are. And then like, but you know, it's not even built in any way related to how the original Castle Town was built, which is like a matte drawing made into pixels that has a fixed camera like Resident Evil. It's just crazy seeing that.

10:08Castle Town was my favorite part, for sure. And that's where they tease the most new stuff, new shops and new minigames. It's such an interesting... I mean, we speculated, it was like, oh, is it going to be Ocarina of Time? But exactly, the texture is repainted over, or is it going to be completely remade from the ground up? And the answer is like, kind of neither. It's like 90 % the same, but like 10 % new. It's just a really, it's a really interesting take on retelling this story. This was the first Nintendo Direct that I watched on my daughter's 12 and Zelda's her favorite game. Absolutely obsessed with Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

10:42And so she was sort of deeply, I'm like so curious about younger fans or newer fans that like this, you know, Zelda's been a different thing. it's been open air exploration for like a decade now or more um and so like in that little moment in the demo where link the bridge collapses in the deku tree and link falls into the pit she's like he'll just climb out and i'm like ha ha no no like yeah you know you can't like climb everything and like i'm trying to explain to her she's like so i can go to the hyrule castle that i see in the distance i'm like yes but also no you go to the gate and then like you can't just walk i'm trying to explain that you can't just go everywhere you can see and she was not understanding what i was

11:22Sam Claiborn:talking about so every next phase is a puzzle essentially you know it's like how do i get to the next part of the story i am very curious to see how younger audiences do react to i i guess it feels very back to the future is this a baby's toy that's just a baby's toy like it yeah it feels more primitive as a result but i don't know like you know people re-watching classic cinema still holds up to this day like stagecoach and you guys just did an episode on is it still fun on ocarina of time and you guys said it all held up and i truly believe it really does this game that it does i think the visuals will help that go down i think the addition of like a jump button will help it go down easy and that was the one that initially it got me an eyebrow raise when i was uh doing i know scoop is the only podcast here at igm but we were doing a live watch party on nvc and uh the addition of the jump button was the thing where i was like well i don't know if i like that because that's a change that's a fundamental change to game design but if you watch that you you'll i'm repeating but essentially what that tells me and what that signals to me is that nintendo is mostly presenting the same game but they are making some pretty big changes in regards to puzzle layout because the addition of a jump jump button fundamentally changes the way some of the jump puzzles work in that game so i'm very curious and it accompanies the camera being completely free 100 originally so the camera not being free and the jump not existing and having pre-programmed pathing for jumps was very integrated into like that decision look we're not gonna have a free camera we can't there's not another stick and so you know changing those things are really interesting but we did see puzzles but the puzzles now have like you know like the ladder falling has like a a stone switch that opens up originally it's just kind of stuck with invisible yeah it was like floating right so like that type of i can see that type of changes happening they make things a little bit more physics based jump button free camera fits with that and then you have everything feels a little bit more like breath of the wild also right yeah very grounded that game is based on triggers and physics and stuff like that you know very logical builds of the dungeons and the way the world feels cohesive and i do love that ao new was like players used to roll in the hyrule field to move faster and the the fact that they use that to develop a new mechanic where you roll and then it turns into a dash i that's the thing that like nearly brought a tear to my i was like that is the nintendo that everyone always was like oh man nintendo is so great those are a little you can also tell he like only hangs out with noobs because real real speed runners backflip kind of sideways i had the exact same thought yeah yeah i don't know i think oh by the way i i would like to see the backlash of people being like you could always jump it's called the backflip yeah right and side jump also this it just hit me these graphics are the actual realization of what that what was it 1999 or 2000 space world demo of link fighting the giant spider this is what the ultimate realization is of that yeah they show a fight in here which i was like whoa that looks a lot like that that was really funny so there you go nerds you finally got your space world gameplay graphics zelda i mean it's it's tough for me to be objective when it comes to ocarina of time right which i like i have to be it's my job but like it's it's very hard for this game in particular like we talked about this on an episode a while ago for a long long time for a decade or more ocarina of time was the consensus pick for greatest video game ever made of all time.

14:50And it kind of faded from that conversation a little bit. I think Breath of the Wild helped kind of ease people off of that stance and just the passage of time generally. The game was that good. I think it's still probably the top Metacritic game of all time. And so it's just like I can't, you know, like part of my brain is like, they changed it and I don't know how I feel about that. Like I have a hard time kind of getting over that a little bit. but like absolutely we'll play it um i thought people stopped caring about this as the best game of all time because they we just hired a bunch of people that played pc games that's what seemed that very well could be i just i like it's just like i said it's just it's just the emotion like the music hits me and the sound hits me and i just can't i can't i have a hard time being kind

15:36Justin Davis:of rational about it yeah i'm very excited you know it is funny that we just replayed this the original less than a year ago for is it still fun i'm so excited to have a free camera that's really really excited about yeah i can't wait to see what the re-deads look and sound like yeah and then i can't wait to see what they do with that torture chamber in like the spirit temples there's like a shadow temple shadow temple there's like this bloody torture room in there like okay no no no that's at the bottom of the well well yeah that leads into the shadow temple doesn't The shadow temple is at the back of the graveyard, and it's up high.

16:10One of the temples has a bloody... You're right. It's not a temple, though. It's bottom of the well. I know this because I'm also updating the strategy guide for the original game right now, and that was a coincidence also.

16:22Sam Claiborn:I saw some IGN guides publishing on our YouTube channel for the original. Yeah, I know. We had to contextualize those after people were like, this isn't the new game. I was rubbing my hands. We're replaying this right now because we're excited for the new game. and here's that we did it yeah we redid we're redid big pose and heart pieces and sculptulas those are all coming and so we're also doing the guide so if you're getting hyped about playing this and doing what we all did a couple months ago and just playing ocarina to compare it there's a group there's a great strategy guide out there i'm trying to get a map made also this little montage that they showed at the end of the presentation it looks good like i think it looks so much better than the kokoree 4 stuff that they showed because everything like all the combat looks so snappy and it looks so satisfying and just seeing the varieties of the dungeons and stuff like that like it's just like man this game looks stunning yeah oh did you watch the extra japanese footage i did and and they changed that looks good too they changed up some stuff from the like because they show him crawling into the little sewer entrance that goes into hyrule castle but he actually ends up in a sewer as opposed to immediately deposited in the courtyard so i'm like there's a change there yeah i i i'm really also hyped that nintendo's like tripling down on physical crap and it all sold out yeah the controller the system the foil cover it's like how can playstation not do this yeah i know what do we like it's it's it's unfathomable to me that selling a bunch of plastic to people that want it like won't work anymore for sony but it works for Nintendo?

17:59I mean, we like running, running IGN commerce is still part of my job. And I think I'm safe to share that. Like we like people clicking on IGN links bought millions and millions of dollars worth of Zelda stuff this week across Best Buy, Target, Amazon, Walmart, like overwhelmingly everyone's like, like it just keep physical media alive, like way, way, way bigger than we expected. And I think probably Nintendo and everybody expected like it was, it's an absolute monster. And I think, I think it's being kind of underrated on that level. Yeah, and the Amiibo all looked good. We'll talk about the other stuff in the presentation, but I do think voting with your wallet for physical media was having a not great effect with people doing boycotts, but it will be eye-opening, I think, for Sony and Microsoft to see Nintendo be able to sell all this stuff, I think.

18:51I mean, I think Nintendo's kind of like, they're not going to let these companies figure it out for themselves, right? like they'll just keep making money you know it's more expensive for them yep crazy

19:05Justin Davis:anyway the ocarina of time remake it's out november 5th so 14 days i did pre-order my uh physical foil edition that's october 5th no what it's more than 14 days 14 days before gta 6 oh okay that's how long we have to beat ocarina of time i think you could do it in a week yeah that'll be all right yeah should be able what about all those quiz questions oh yeah that includes questions stay tuned to the idea you know that has a side effect which is really cute that you always have too many rupees and then you get the big the giants wallet and then you have you still max out your rupees you're like well great i got a silver rupee cool like I already have all my rupees.

19:50Now you can spend them on buying tests.

19:53Sam Claiborn:I am not looking forward to getting all 100 Skulchulas again. Yeah, some of them are annoying. You gotta bring a little bug around with you all the time. I don't like having to plant the seeds and stuff like that. That's annoying.

20:06Justin Davis:Yeah. 27 gig file size for Ocarina of Time Remake.

20:12Sam Claiborn:Much bigger than what they put on that original cart. Yeah, that's textures for you. And Navi saying two other things.

Turned out to be true? And the game looks really good. It looks sick. Man, this game looks good.

23:15Sam Claiborn:It looks so badass, dude. Gosh. Like, again, it's all the stuff that I loved from Dread of, like, the cinematic parries. Sam is just being an absolute badass the entire time. But now she's hungry. Yeah.

23:28Justin Davis:Yeah. The visor broken out. So it's like, are you a Zombo? It's so cool. Yeah, and it seems to go to a direct sequel to Dread, right? Or I don't know if we want to spoil Dread or talk about the ending of that game. but like there's implications of like the trailer, like maybe it's not a spoiler at all. Cause it's in the trailer for the sequel, but like, it seems to be kind of a direct continuation and a really interesting and, and sort of a Nintendo like way. Although I guess Tuesday kingdoms like that too. So maybe are we the baddies?

23:55Sam Claiborn:This trailer got me to just dig, dig out my old Metroid dread cartridge and I'm going to replay it again ahead of the release of this.

Read the full transcript

24:04Justin Davis:I never finished that. So yeah.

24:06Sam Claiborn:Oh, incredible. incredible last boss so good so fun lengthy last boss it's a tough one can take a while it is tough yeah um i i like how that those bosses provided a bit of a gate check in that game for either skill or just collecting a bunch of stuff that helps you yeah and like if you did get 255 missiles it is a little bit easier to take on some of these bosses which is like i think that's great I do see a little bit of like, I don't know, maybe this is just me reading into it, but the footage shows Samus leaving like a silhouette of herself as she dashes across. That's very reminiscent of Prince of Persia Lost Crown.

24:45Sam Claiborn:So I'm like, if, you know, Prince of Persia borrows from Metroid and now Metroid borrows from that, like, this is all wonder. We all win, no matter who borrows from one. I think Samus's helmet borrows from Hollow Knight. And there's like some elements of that in it. So I think there's a little bit of like, and the ravenous theme and everything, and just kind of the dark devouring world. Like that's all a little bit Hollow Knight. It feels meaner in a way that I don't think a Nintendo game has felt in a long time. And I kind of like that. It's very edgy.

25:12Justin Davis:I think part of the - We are so lucky to have a Metroid after Metroid Prime 4. That's what I'm, this is the point I wanted to make. Just existing. It's a little bit surprising because Metroid Prime 4, a lot of people liked it, but it was a little bit soft, I think. I think sales were a little soft. I did not like it. Sam did. Yeah, I love it. So I was a little bit surprised they've already got a new Metroid to announce less than a year later, but I'm sure this is already well into development. So, you know.

25:34Sam Claiborn:This kind of leaked a couple of months ago. Yeah, at least the ravenous name. Through some ESRB rating or something like that. I think in Brazil.

25:39Justin Davis:Yeah, I want to say. Yeah, it's Mercury Steam again. It's easy to, I don't know. I imagine their elevator pitch is like, you know, okay. Doing it again. Well, in Dread, she's, you know, being hunted. Now let's turn Samus into the Predator, right? Like that's the cool idea.

25:55Sam Claiborn:It's what I've always wanted since Metroid Fusion because you know you're getting chased by the Terminator essentially I'm like let's reverse that what does that look like I like these Inquisitor guys who the heck are these yeah me too and and did you see the like Chozo are in this one they're not guaranteed to be in in Metroid games and the Chozo amiibo is really interesting too like I hope it tells like a Samus lore story I mean I I've said on this show before I'm a little sick of you know Samus losing Samus's skills and playing through these games like i like i wish there was like a protege you know cool bounty hunter that samus like encounters something i wish they would do a smith off like that not one of those dumb aliens from one of the other games but you know some young lady bounty hunter what's that guy from metroid prime 4 cyrus cylex yeah there you go there you go you got what you want everybody wants to know more about cylex he was only in the first like five

26:47Justin Davis:minutes and last 10 minutes of that game in this trailer they show little glimpses of her metroid suit but you can see the amiibo you can see it really well she looks it looks awesome she's like

26:56Sam Claiborn:all hulked out yeah well you should you should finish dread i haven't finished it so it's it's it's new to me the baby and it's also very common rider that little kick at the end is very if you like common rider at all i think everyone stood up during that moment that is out january 28th so not too long that's two days after my birthday so cool cannot wait what a q1 we did an extra

27:21Justin Davis:console watch on that this week yeah that's true um metroid is 20 gigs and would you believe that's twice the size of donkey kong bonanza wow i would you would most of donkey kong bonanza is cheese you can dig through so yeah yeah i don't it's just a full you know big 3d fully destructible environments game and metroid's like a two and a half d action not you get rid of the gigs every

27:46Sam Claiborn:time you blow up a wall.

27:48Justin Davis:That's right. They just delete it. Does that mean that there's giant pre-recorded cutscenes or something? I don't know. It's just twice as much game. It is twice as much game. That's how it works. Maybe the planet turns upside down.

28:08Sam Claiborn:But not as much as Ocarina. How does Metroid Ravenous not have as much data as Ocarina in a 30-year-old game? Explain yourself, Nintendo.

28:17Justin Davis:I just think it's interesting. Ocarina, what is it? 27 gigs. That game looks really, really good, especially for a Nintendo game. But it's 100 gigs less than Final Fantasy Revelation is going to be on Switch 2. It's crazy.

28:29Sam Claiborn:There's also probably a lot less talking in both of the Nintendo games combined than there is Revelation. Nintendo has legendary compression. It's always audio files and... Multiple languages. Yeah, multiple languages. does it's like call of duty is always like 400 gigs well i think another reason why ocarina of

28:50Justin Davis:time remake looks so good for a nintendo game is when you look at like kirby and the world beyond and that's not really an insult i think that game looks really cool but it's just more nintendo's typical 3d very simple colorful setting right not really realistic but i loved by the way as someone that watches a lot of game trailers i really liked how that trailer was constructed like you just get half of it if he's running around this world and then And you're like, what the fuck? Like what just happened? Which like clearly that's the intent. Like that's the whole point of how it's constructed.

29:19But I just thought it tells, it tells a complete story in a game trailer. And I'm like, well, all right, I gotta know. I gotta know where this is going now.

29:27Sam Claiborn:This is a damn good trailer. This is, I think this is the, this area that we're seeing is the game's great plateau, you know, like it's the tutorial area.

29:33Justin Davis:Yeah. So is this the working theory that they've Breath of the Wild did to Kirby?

29:38Sam Claiborn:I think it's more like, I think it's more like Sonic Frontiers because the second he opens up. I knew you were going to say that. You're ruining it for everybody. I think the second he opens up that line, I'm like, dude, all the speed challenges, I see them on the horizon. Well, Sonic for Tears was very un-Nintendo in its sparseness. They made a Breath of the Wild world. They did not fill it with enough stuff. I think they took the wrong lesson. I hope, yeah, I just, that can be a criticism of Kirby is that it's a little simplistic and whatever. But maybe this, but it always gets really cool by the end.

30:12So hopefully, hopefully they solve all that with a -

30:14Sam Claiborn:The second they show Kirby using abilities to navigate like very clearly designed like puzzle areas, I'm like, yeah, this looks sick.

30:21Justin Davis:Kirby's like -

30:22Sam Claiborn:Shmovement, dude. Shmovement. I think it's the best looking Kirby game in many years. Well, yeah. It's probably the best ever. I know. It looks so cool. And then, yeah, Kirby occupies a really interesting space in kind of like Nintendo, their library, because it is kiddie and family friendly. but then also every Kirby game ends in some incomprehensible cosmic horror. It gets really weird by the end.

30:46Justin Davis:Like in the forgotten land, I didn't play it, but you know, King goes played it. And yeah, by the end, if there's like these giant animals that are being like experimented on and like they have to break out of this facility, it's not how it starts up. No, they're very strange in that way. And like this, this feels like it's just kind of like leaning into more of that. I love the final shot where like, you see, I mean, And it looks a lot like the Zelda, you know, sort of dragons floating by. It's great. I'm pumped. Yeah. I'm not usually interested in Kirby games, but this looks cool. This looks great.

31:17Justin Davis:It also seems similar to Bonanza in that very early on, he encounters a young female companion that's going to be traveling with him somehow. Oh, yeah.

31:26Sam Claiborn:I didn't put that together, but yeah, that makes sense. That's his... I mean, probably the avatar speaks. They're just styling it on everybody. It's like Sony can't release a video game anymore. They only cancel them. And then Nintendo's like, we just got one coming out every other month. It's no big deal. And they're all like incredible.

31:50Justin Davis:Well, we could talk about a game that Sony is going to release very soon. Oh boy. We can talk about Wolverine. We'll talk about Wolverine. Okay. All right. That's yeah. I can say a lot of nice things about Wolverine. I'm only saying nice things this episode. After I criticized the intro to a game I said was good last week. uh yeah we gave it a six out of ten game spot gave it a six out of ten i think you know which is okay it's not bad it is okay it means the game is okay and it's okay that we gave it a six at the start of this episode you said nick beat wolverine yeah nick is all i could think about was uh the only other person that's beat wolverine is saber tooth and it happens a lot in this that's funny uh i've only spent one evening with it so i played probably two or three hours and i I liked what I played, but that's only a small portion of the game.

32:37Justin Davis:Nick, what did you end up thinking about it?

32:40Sam Claiborn:I'm very aligned with our review of it. It's not often that I get the privilege of playing a game a little bit early, so I was very excited to check it out, so I decided to devote my time. Whenever that happens, I like to try and beat the game before the review comes out to see if my criticisms align with the IGN review. I did not review this game for IGN, just to be very clear. Um, but, uh, as soon as I finished it, I talked to some people here and I was like, I would give it a six out of 10. And then they were like, well, it turns out you're, you're right on the money. Uh, yeah, I was, I was pretty disappointed with the game overall.

33:19Sam Claiborn:I thought it was just okay. Uh, I think my biggest early sign of criticism and like concern for me was the second you load into the first level as Wolverine, you have a pretty bad-ass opening where we've seen it in the trailer. he ejects from the plane and he does this little cannonball dive where he destroys a like a jeep because he's indestructible and he comes back to life and then you charge up you kill a couple enemies and it's like wolverine destroy these boxes to get five xp and i'm like jaw on the ground like wolverine does not destroy boxes to gain five xp what are we doing here and it's just like i i think the big problem i have with the game is that there is it is very clearly a combat oriented game a la something like a devil may cry or upcoming control resonant right but you got one combo that you use throughout the entire game and you get very little in terms of variation from there it's you know you're square square square and then if you want square square square triangle and not much else from there i think there's very little in the way of player expression there is no fun to be had with enemies other than i think the only kind of expression the game allows you is prioritizing which enemy you want to kill first and one thing that i thought would be a little more enticing to me is kind of like the the gruesome and grisly like death animations for all the enemies because it is it is badass i i will i will say that up front but you kind of see all the animations within the first 10 minutes of the game and then from there you pretty much got all of them there's a couple co-op like not co-op but like team up yeah fatalities that you can do that are that are all really cool and exciting but yeah there's just uh very linear levels which is totally fine if they're designed around it but there's it seems like there's nothing really to do it feels just not particularly fun to play as all the challenges are pretty simple i think i got a game over like once in the entire game just because it's like very simple i i don't know i I expected a lot more depth in terms of Insomniac because Insomniac is known for creative weapons and skills and how these all kind of combine together to do really flashy stuff.

35:29Sam Claiborn:And I don't think we see any of that. And I guess the last thing I'll leave with is, you know, unfairly maybe, but it feels inevitable that comparisons to Spider-Man are going to come up with this. and it makes me kind of reconsider like are the insomniac spider-man games only good because it's really fun to swing around as spider-man because i don't think there's that much there is more variety in the combat as spider-man but i feel like it's a lot of shared dna dna that makes me think like i don't i don't know if i want i don't know if i'm how i'm gonna feel about a spider-man three all right he's got gadgets there's more going on in spider-man too i think there's more the combat there's certainly more but it also is concerning to me that why does the spider-man game have more combat options than the combat game that is wolverine i mean wolverine they're constrained you can see you can you can see the thought process of the designers of like wolverine is a very up close and personal character he doesn't have a vehicle he doesn't he's not flipping all around or flying and so that immediately constrains the play space that's available to them right like Like he's a boots on the ground guy and he's also very short.

36:39So it's like, you know, like, so, so like you can just see, like, it's one of those things of like, Oh, Wolverine game sick. But then you think about it for like five more minutes and you're like, well, actually, wait a second. Like there's not as much we can do with much more limited verb set. Yeah. Yeah. That's exactly right. I think the game's fine. I agree with the six out of 10. So I don't, I don't, I mean, Nick, I think you put it pretty well. I don't know that I have too much more to add. I will say as someone like, you know, I've read a decent number of X-Men comic books and I've seen the movies.

37:10Like, I think I know the lore fairly well. I had no idea what was like, who is Nathaniel Essex? And like, what is all of this stuff? Like, I was so deeply confused by like just the setup of the game and like this version of the Marvel universe. And like, that's not a criticism. Like, I'm glad that they're like, you know, characters are allied that you think would be enemies. And then there's enemies that sometimes you might think would be allies. So it's like all that was interesting, but it left me sort of like, I was just like, well, where's Professor X? Like, what's going on? Like, I just, I didn't quite understand what I was seeing from a, from like a storytelling and lore standpoint a lot of the time.

37:48Sam Claiborn:I think they made the smart choice of focusing on maybe, I don't know. Again, I'm probably as much as well-versed in X-Men as you, it sounds like. But I am glad, like, I know, I knew who Nathaniel Essex was. So I was like, okay, I'm interested in where they set this game because it's not – I was expecting to see Wolverine getting experimented on, getting his adamantium skeleton. And I was pleasantly surprised they didn't retread a lot of the ground that the movies have already done. So they are telling a story that is relatively newer for people who only engage with the movies and cartoons and stuff like that.

38:21Sam Claiborn:So I thought that was pretty cool. But I think by the time we roll credits, I think the story is borderline incomprehensible in terms of the emotional beats it's trying to relay. And just like, I don't think any of these emotions are earned in any way, shape or form. I do like it. I do like the costumes, though. yeah it's it's a very it's a very video gamey game of like you know chase sequence now fight a million goons and then fight a boss and then there's going to be a 15 minute cut scene where you know and then now it's off to the next area and repeat like and and it does that competently but not exceptionally and that's the that's the game i think that's the whole thing and there are moments of brilliance too like i know i i said that you you know you tend to see all of the brutal executions relatively early on in the game but every time you pull them off it does feel good whenever you like clear an enemy it's like there is a there is something here with how it feels to kill a dude in this game and i think that means something i just i just wish there was a little more variety in that regard but uh yeah i don't know if i'm excited to return to wolverine but i think i'd be more than happy to get back to spider-man i mean how long are you so many haters done yet how long did it take you to finish uh i want to say it was 10 hours okay 10 hours roughly okay yeah i'm almost done with it okay here comes sam yeah i think i think this do you guys like the gamecube because this is what this is it's a it's a fantastic gamecube game and i think we all love the gamecube um a couple of things i wanted to comment on i i i really like x-men and i really I like most of the concept of there's mutants, they're being hunted by fascistic human evil people.

40:10The giant robots are a little silly. The Sentinels are. But generally, the idea of this oppressed class of freaks is great. And this game gives all the motivation to that side of X-Men, where it's like there's like a little kid they're trying to free from a concentration camp and things go wrong. And it's like, it's, it's heavy stuff. And, you know, Wolverine's pissed off about that. And so is Jean Grey. And that's all like really cool motivational stuff. And to Justin's point, I, and, and Nick's follow-up point, I think it's great that there, that it's, that's not just Wolverine on the X-Men yet.

40:48And you, you are asking who is this Essex guy? He seems kind of evil and, you know, Wolverine doesn't really want to work for him. and you know that's what all those things I just said pull together for why the X-Men is is neat and should exist as a Professor X Academy for protection of mutants right like I love all that and this game has like tons of setup for that and I think that's really like special and because I think you know the first two X-Men movies X1 and 2 really got at that really well I think we all love that in those movies um and then that and then the 90s cartoon did too those are all really good tellings of that along with of course original classic comic run so i think that's great about the game um i would completely i don't know why people are including you nick like take issue with the combat being simple i understand what you're saying about the combos but what what the thing that you're trying to do is build a meter so you can do a bunch of instant kills and the way you get at that i think is really clever you have to set up attacks that involve like really fast building of your meter like hitting somebody against a wall so they stunned and then you could like punch them a whole bunch.

41:57I think that's really cool and I think when you have a big enough fight to get at that and then that solves a problem of like ending the fight quickly or in the challenge rounds it does a lot. I think that's really good. I think it's smarter than Spider-Man. Yes, it doesn't have the skill tree and the combat options and all that stuff but I do think that that's more like people should know that like part of the game is yes you can walk waltz through the game just like you're all saying and not care about that but part of it is like if you play in a hard mode or want to challenge yourself to do like a bunch of like enemy control you have to you have to do that you have to think about that i thought that was cool and then i i like that wolverine is in in basically an invincible character and they made a game about how do you stop wolverine They do handle that well.

42:45Yeah, they do handle that well. And it's disgusting. It's absolutely gross. There's like parts where Wolverine loses most of his muscle and skin while you're playing the game like that happens. And not all the costumes heal. Sometimes you're just running around like a naked guy. It's just crazy. So like a lot of that stuff, all those Wolverine elements, I think, feel really good. The X-Men elements feel really good. But yeah, it feels like a game from 20 years ago. It doesn't feel like... And you know what else felt like that is Spider-Man, right? Because it just had a huge graphical upgrade to it, which I think is important.

43:23I think Spider-Man, you're totally right. Were we wrong about Spider-Man? Like, was swinging around New York the best part? Probably.

43:30Justin Davis:I think the combat is really fun in Spider-Man.

43:33Sam Claiborn:We shall see when Spider-Man 3 comes out.

43:37Justin Davis:Better than Batman? I feel it's pretty all part. Batman. I think Arkham like just dominates there. I do think the shadow of Mordor, that was a good one in that style.

43:46Sam Claiborn:I do think that this game does wonders though for, I do feel represented as Wolverine being a short man with a very hairy back and incredible muscles. I feel, I feel seen in this game finally. So learning about Nick here, you know, they don't always play up Wolverine as short, but like sometimes like crouched and written spry and stuff like that. But like when you put In this game, they make short tricks all the time. And then you're always with Sabretooth, who's like four times your size. Yeah, yeah. And he's always like, you goddamn twerp. And then he picks you up by your head and throws you through a wall.

44:17It happens over and over again. Wolverine's just like, hey, buddy, what are we doing today?

44:21Sam Claiborn:One silly thing in the game. There's a lot of collectibles in the game. You got materials so you can get new suits. The materials are hidden around in boxes. There's whiskey bottles that have little lore attached to them. and then there's like these nightmare doors but i do think it's very funny where to sam's previous point you know there's you know this kid's in danger you gotta stop him but first i think there's a hidden whiskey bottle somewhere in this level i gotta go find it like there's some moments very video gamey in that regard that kind of take you out a little bit but it's it's fine i i the um i did i did like those nightmare challenges that i don't i was about to say it's my favorite part of the game i don't know that that's true but like i thought that they were well done and good variety the last ones that you unlock like the gauntlet ones where you just have to take on a horde of enemies and survive to get the high score those are pretty fun because it really pushes where you have to choose a debuff yeah yeah that's fun that's that that's clever yeah i the the reward for those is pretty funny too it's a little monologue about wolverine being 200 years old or unknown years old you know it'd be like 1850 i came down from the rockies and people were being mean to a bear and i i showed their camp it's so weird i think wolverine also lived through the dust bowl one of these nightmares uh reveals i'm like wow exactly yeah no i mean that's all that stuff makes i i just think you can make wolverine like you know a member of the x-men or you can do all that other stuff and at least it has all that other stuff yeah it does the thing that i really liked about the spider-man games where you collect the little collectible and then it shows you like Like, oh, yeah, I remember when I left this backpack here.

46:00Sam Claiborn:And, you know, it gives you a little bit of world building for Spider-Man for people familiar and unfamiliar with this backstory. So I think that stuff is neat.

46:08Justin Davis:Well, as someone who's only played a few hours, I am going to play more. I'm looking forward to playing more. But it has a 78 on Open Critic. And I think it's fair to say that that's just lower than what people expect from first party PlayStation and Insomniac. 48:19Justin Davis:Okay, let's also talk about the big news from today. This is actually really surprising. But speaking of PlayStation games, Fizzint isn't one anymore. Fizzint. It fizzint one.

48:31Sam Claiborn:Yeah. Well, it is though still. A PlayStation game? Oh, not a PlayStation game. No. You got asked the question, the Fizzit and Xbox?

48:42Justin Davis:uh fizz is an xbox fizz is anyway uh yeah now it's an xbox game apparently playstation was going to cancel it remember this was announced in 2024 uh early 20 is an xbox is what you're at a playstation state of play herman holst shook hands with hideo kojima there it is is this the one they showed on like the the the sody studios they pan out yeah there's like a drone shot that

49:05Sam Claiborn:like tracks out of the studio and review pulls out to reveal it's very impressive it's kojima

49:10Justin Davis:of returning to espionage action yeah and he said there's gonna be this live action the right words this live action component to it and now they pan out to show i think it's columbia pictures which is a sony subsidiary so yeah that was in that was been it's been in the works for a couple years now at least but no standing so he's gonna cancel it but now xbox has picked it up so i don't know it's kind of it's kind of a pr win for xbox but also it leaves questions like xbox is not in a good spot these days, but now they've picked up this seemingly pretty expensive production. They don't have their own movie studio to make the live action part of it.

49:46Justin Davis:They're going to have to farm that out somewhere. I think Microsoft can afford it. Yeah. I assume it's still being filmed at Sony is what was my assumption, but I guess we'll find out soon. I mean, this makes me think of people. One, everyone is looking at this through the lens of like, what a Sony fail, right? Like everyone's very mad at Sony. Everyone's down at Sony right now but it was like they're the ones they're the ones that broke up with him right so it's like that that framing out in the fandom is really interesting to me that like you know what do they see what's the budget what's the progress that the game has made that they're just like nah we're out we don't want to do this after all um and the other the other thing that i've been thinking about it's like we think about kojima productions is you know kojima's this larger than life uh guy and death stranding was a game of the year candidate he's got all these famous friends But like that studio, they've released two products and it has to be incredibly expensive for them to do what they're doing.

50:43Two products in like 10 years, right? Right. And like, so that's the, you know, and just the state of the art office and state of the art mocap and just like all the rest. And so, you know, they're making, they're making Physint, they're making OD. And then I believe that they have one more sort of unannounced product, but could, you know, confirmed there's sort of like a three, you know, a three product studio now, if I recall correctly. So it's like, man, that's like, that's just the money of it all is the other thing that I'm thinking about. It's like, that feels like a very, very expensive studio to run where like the conjecture is that Death Stranding 2 underperformed a little bit.

51:17Justin Davis:Well, we've got some data and some quotes here from analysts. So we've got Dr. Serkan Toto, he's CEO of Kanten Games. He says, Kojima Games have a strong platform marketing halo effect and are not about sales alone, but it seems the steep drop off from Death Stranding 1 to Death Stranding 2 spooked Sony enough to cut them off. So yeah, apparently. Yeah, that's kind of what I'm getting at. They're like someone at Sony, you know, it's like, oh, those Sony bean counters don't know. And it's like that that's true, right? Like there is a legitimate fear that the people that are in charge of, you know, SC, you know, Sony Computer Entertainment don't value sort of long term creative partnerships the way that like previous leadership did, right?

52:00Like that is a real thing, but it is also equally a real thing that like maybe they're like, hmm, this game is five years away at best. Like maybe we don't want to fund, you know, 500 to 1 ,000 people working on this thing for years and years and years. So yeah, I mean, like it is funny to think about, you know, Microsoft looking at Bethesda and being like, yeah, make Starfield. That sounds great. Do that instead of all these other games. Like they don't have the best track record of like picking up you know an amazing studio and then making the best thing with it go ahead

52:32Justin Davis:damon that reminded me going back to wolverine uh one of my favorite comments on the review as well they can't all be as good as starfield okay that's all that's all just reminded me of that but i i like the the elevator pitch here doesn't have to include columbia pictures and a bunch of stuff you can cut from this game and get down to hey hideo kojima is just going to take all of his knowledge from making the some of the best games ever and make that style of game a tactical espionage game. And like who wouldn't want to exclusively publish that? Just work it out. Like if you need to cut it down to being a single player experience, that's 20 hours long, like that's better than just giving up on it, which that's the most surprising thing to me.

53:18So like maybe Kojima is, you know, like very dead set on some very expensive project that Sony doesn't have to do it. but it just seems like such a safe bet to go with him on his like metal gear follow-up like i just say those words out loud you know what a what a pr win for xbox and for it to go on an xbox like not even nintendo or like another japanese you know leading company making like publisher like square readings or something what like that is just he's gonna need to find a

53:50Sam Claiborn:new game engine because he was using the Decima engine from Gorilla Games so very curious to see what he adopts next whether he's going to have carte blanche to choose his next game engine from any Microsoft owned studio or if he's going to develop something in house a la the Fox engine that they use for two games Phantom Pain and Pro Evolution Soccer like 2014 or 2015 or something like that so I'm very curious to see how this all unfolds but yeah I don't know it's a bit of a bummer and very shocking to see because I think the news dropped last night at like 9 p.m and I was like oh like uh-oh let me just add to like if they can't if they're willing to cancel fizzin again but they put all of their marketing behind like what's next yeah dude there's definitely studios I think about someone like uh you know like a house mark or like a media molecule especially we're like what they're what they're four or five years back from releasing a product now.

54:48It's like, ooh, like it definitely makes you concerned for some of the, you know, some of the Sony funded projects that are out there. Like what a, what a, what a lost generation for them. I mean, I just, I just, and I'm a neutral. I own every console and I want every console to succeed. But I just like this shift to, you know, games as a service that so didn't pan out for Sony and now we're still paying for it five or six years later. is just a deep disappointment as a video game fan and as a gamer.

55:22Justin Davis:We've got some data from Alinea Analytics that shows just how many misses Sony has had in recent years. So of course there's Concord, which was canceled in two weeks, lost 300 million plus down the drain. Marathon was soft, fewer than 2 million copies sold on that. Saros was sold, it's only made 61 million in revenue. Marvel Token, people like it, but it's sold less than a million copies so far across PS5 and PC. And then Lego Horizon Adventures. Remember that one? Only 250 ,000 copies sold on PC and PS5. And we still have another. I just think Sony needs more surefire hits than kind of a nebulous next thing from Kojima that could be another five years away.

56:05I just want them to work with him on that. Make it into the hit. I don't necessarily think Microsoft's going to be great at that for the Starfield reasons I just outlined. like i kind of want sony to do that but or konami how crazy would that have been oh that would have

56:21Justin Davis:been great because konamis really seem like they're kind of serious about coming back 100

56:25Sam Claiborn:yeah who knows what happens next but i'd be very curious to see you know when eventually we do get hands-on with od what the what that final product ends up looking like what critical reception what financial reception is to things to od i think will be indicative of koji pro's future uh what's od's platforms xbox xbox xbox yeah it's just xbox xbox and pc assumedly yeah but yeah very sad news to wake up to i'm looking i'm looking forward to some more espionage action but it sounds like i'm going to be waiting a little longer oh yeah it's up there like just like has there ever been i guess you know microsoft buying rare is up there as one of those crazy moments but just first party sony game announced it a state of play and then like the Sony game is now an Xbox game.

57:12It's just crazy. It's just crazy news. You know, Kojima's done those kind of like stair step games before. So what was the, uh, Phantom pain prequel little thing? Ground zeros. Ground zeros. Like I would love just put out a little disc of something. Let me, let me sneak around something and see what it's like. Prologue.

57:30Sam Claiborn:Yeah.

57:31Justin Davis:Fizz isn't.

57:32Sam Claiborn:Fizz isn't.

57:34Justin Davis:Fizz isn't. There's some like key art for fizzing. Do you, have you seen what the tagline is? It's great. It's like, it's something, I hope I'm getting this right. It's like, here comes the feeling.

57:43Sam Claiborn:Yeah, here comes, yeah. And it looks very, like one thing that sold me on the games, it's a tactical espionage fashion action or something like that. I didn't get fashion. Fashion is an integral part of the game in a way that I'm like, hell yeah. Especially like, you know, in Death Stranding 1 and 2, he collaborated with the real life tech brand acronym, which I'm a big fan of. And just like how he kind of implements that into the game, like apart from it being a cosmetic, now it's going to be part of gameplay. Like I'm into that. That's cool. Monster. Death Stranding 2 is so good. The end of that game is so awesome.

58:12It really is. I haven't played 2 yet, but watching some of the B-roll during this segment, I'm like, damn, I want to get to that game. I don't know when. It's going to have to be next year.

58:20Justin Davis:That's an example of a game that looks even better than Ocarina of Time Remake. That game looks incredible. Dude, at the beginning, you're out where you're walking around the mountain. You're like, what is this photorealism? It's so crazy.

1:00:03Justin Davis:Justin revisited Crimson Desert or I guess you visited Crimson Desert enhanced yeah I mean god help me I don't know why the spell was cast over me tell me about it I'm thinking of doing the same yeah that was my first question did you play it the first time around I did play it first time around so I'm curious should I start a new game the story is substantially different like I'm better yeah it's better it takes it from but here's the thing is it takes it from what was legitimately terrible before like you don't the original stories you don't understand that why you came back from the dead and then like it honestly made it was absolutely incomprehensible and maybe like there are games with worse stories but the games with worse stories are like card games or platformers that aren't like trying to tell a story like a game that's trying to be a story based action adventure crimson desert was legitimately bottom tier like it was it was a one out of two and like the story now is like or one or two the story now is like a five so it's like it's not it's not it's it's much much better and it's way more different than i was expecting but it's still not i mean it's still like you're still finding a guy's lost sheep and like doing a bunch of garbage you know it's still not great but like i i i couldn't believe i was expecting there to be new scenes and you know new voiceover but like the story is also different and really tiny ways, which is like, I'll give you an example of like, I goofed on this on the show, as did the whole internet of like the game, like, so your character dies and you come back from the dead.

1:01:34And then the very first thing you do is like, it's like, go arm wrestle a guy. And it doesn't tell you why you're doing that. It's like, just go arm wrestle him. And like, now it changes like Cliff has a little VO where he's like, you know, where are all my gray main companions? I need to find them I should go to the tavern so like a tiny little change there and then when you get into the tavern the guy you arm wrestle is like ah like you want information from me you have to test your metal first great and it's like it's such a tiny little change they couldn't have come up with that last year so so what really blows my mind is that they did both they did these tiny little changes but then there's also like there's legitimately like entire chapters of the game that I rearranged.

1:02:18Wow. Like they moved stuff up hours and hours earlier than it was in the story before and so big changes and small changes they added a scene so again it's not a spoiler it's the first 15 minutes of the game of like Cliff dies and then he's just back and then it's never explained or it's explained like 50 hours later what's going on and they add a scene there's an entirely new scene of like Cliff in some metaphysical space that's like explaining a little bit about what's going on with him and And when he comes back and you've been living in this fisherman's house, they explain that you've been like convalescing there and he's been nursing you back to health for like two months.

1:02:54Like none of that's in the original game. Like so. So I don't I don't want to overstate it. Like the story, the story is still not good. It is still like, you know, yeah, find this guy's lost sheep and go do this stuff that doesn't make sense. But it's coherent now. And I honestly, like I expected it to be improved and it's more improved than I thought it was going to be.

1:03:19Sam Claiborn:I just imagine the cut scene that explains what happened, how he dies. Yeah, that's me. You're probably wondering how I got you. And so that is part of it's slightly awkward that like part of what they added is Cliff's. They added an internal monologue to Cliff. So it's like there's these 30 second to 60 second cut scenes of the camera kind of panning around him of like, should I trust what so-and-so is telling me? I think so, because they might be able to tell me more about the Grey Mains. But it really makes a big difference. All this stuff that it makes him a real character now. And so, you know, I just, I'm really, it's really impressive how they took the same beats, you're doing the same stuff, but the way that they stitch it together actually makes sense now.

1:04:07And it feels like a magic trick. I honestly can't believe him. I think I'm going to keep playing it. That's what I wanted to know. If you're stuck in, you're going to stick with it. I'm going to do it, Justin.

1:04:19Sam Claiborn:You convinced me. New game. Now it's a game that has a 6 out of 10 story and just 10 out of 10 combat, 10 out of 10 world design, 10 out of 10 all these other aspects to it, and now it has a story that makes sense. What a feat. What is life like at this developer?

1:04:36Justin Davis:Yeah, I know. yeah like like dude what was the decision to make the game pearl of business completely cracked like i can't i can't understand like i don't know how they did this it was barely six months since its first release yeah and like and they patched in like cliff controls completely differently now like depending on when you played it nick but like this was very much yeah it's it's snappy the game actually feels good to move now like and that change happened within they worked on this game for you know eight years and then it came out and everyone's like yo your character controls like and they're like oh don't worry about it we fixed it and i'm like why didn't you like like it's just so strange so it's like you know they that's the same with writing the most basic of tutorials uh that cover what's happening in the beginning of the game like that's that's like just something you check off right yeah game feel good check yeah game tell people what's going on check and so that's part of they just missed that and i will say like if you're playing it for the first time part of the reason it feels better now is because i've played you know i played i played 40 hours of it like i'm fast forwarding through everything so it's like it controls better and i'm fast forwarding through all the dialogue and so it's like that that's making this that's making it great like i'm having a good time i mean the fast forward button through

1:05:52Sam Claiborn:cut scenes is incredible because it doesn't skip it it just speeds it up and you can still read the subtitle so more games should add stuff like that that's pretty good quality of life feature yeah it's so smart so smart what they did like they give you there's a rumor of a gray mane that's like out in the farmlands and so that's the reason you go do all that junk that previously was just random stuff you were out there doing it's very well done all right you you make a

1:06:17Justin Davis:good case i don't know i'm i'm still playing onimusha uh and star wars zero company and wolverine and the blood of dawn walker i'm gonna jump the case you're making is keep on waiting Three of those four games are better than Crimson Desert still, just to be clear. But it is. I mean, I've been a hater. I was famously a hater in the spring. And it's much better. It's okay to recant.

1:06:43Sam Claiborn:I, too, have recanted. And I'm willing to jump back in. Okay. This is all really great stuff for us guide writers. Okay. Yeah, they changed everything. Even the little things. Great. Yeah, dude. And it's true. like quests are all different now. I think I'm pretty sure like one chapter is completely just removed. Great.

1:07:05Justin Davis:Yeah. You'd have to revisit the, like the walkthrough Sam, right? Like it'd be, it's like rearrange everything. It's there's never been anything like it in the history of games. It's so strange. And the fact that we're all talking about it positively, it's just going to make it. So there's more things like it. Okay.

1:07:36Justin Davis:Okay, all of that brings us to Video Game 20 Questions. And our suggestion this week comes from Jude from Poughkeepsie, New York, who is of Mad Hazzard Infamy. He suggested Mad Hazzard fairly recently. Were you on that episode? Yeah. I don't think that was a win, but that was a good pick. And Jude says, I... I've never heard of that game, and I wasn't on that episode. You weren't on that one? Okay.

1:07:56Sam Claiborn:I think you were on that one. I think you were. Eat Lead. Matt Hazard? Eat Lead, the return of Matt Hazard.

1:08:01Justin Davis:The return of Matt Hazard, yeah. Remember, it's a fake. Eat Lead, maybe. Like a Duke Nukem fake. Yeah, they faked like an 80s action hero, and now he's back. Anyway. Dude says, I'm seeking redemption from my previous entry. I'm submitting two suggestions to the crew, a mild sauce option and a Diablo sauce option. Well, unfortunately for you all, the mild sauce is very easy and has already been done twice in the past. So we're going to move right into the Diablo option, which... That is mild, though. The mild one was Batman Arkham Asylum. The Diablo sauce option, I'm afraid, is truly Diablo. Oh, no.

1:08:36Sam Claiborn:Does that mean it's Diablo, the isometric RPG? No, it's not Diablo. I was hoping that he wrote in Beautiful Joe, which I think we've also had a couple times. Well, this is good that we have a hard one to challenge us because we did so great last week. By the way, I'm not a huge Mega Man guy, and so when they showed off, who's the other character that's not Mega Man? I didn't know who Proto Man was I'm not a Mega Man guy and I got so pumped because I thought it was Beautiful Joe for a second and I was like oh!

1:09:04Justin Davis:In Mega Man? They finally did it. They hadn't showed Mega Man yet they show this character first and I thought it was Beautiful Joe coming back and then there was Egg boy did I feel foolish Well we can only dream Beautiful Joe could totally be in that universe though Bring back Beautiful Joe you cowards Alright let the questioning begin in okay all right did it come out in the 70s 80s or 90s yes oh i'm gonna take the game seriously today yeah first first time in a while if i'm being honest great uh did this appear on the nes yes nes game all right going for the jugular here was it was it made well okay was it developed or published by Nintendo?

1:09:52No. Did this appear as an arcade game? No. I think it's that bootleg Bible game on the NES. Bible Adventures.

1:10:02Sam Claiborn:Is this developed by a Japanese developer? No. Bible Adventure confirmed. All the dreams. They also did Spiritual Warfare by the way and I think maybe there's a couple. Who made McKids? i think that's japanese because it was a game that they changed into a mcdonald's game is this game based on a license yes all right it's back to the future two and three it could be been goonies two goonies two uh yeah uh wait wait hold on that was a konami game oh okay fair it's gremlins who made gremlins 2 nobody knows that dude is it is it based on a tv series no movie no by the way out of all the comments from last week's scoop and basically every episode i had one person in my social media replies mad that i goofed on gremlins 2 on the nes last week is this that game's good is this license like generally not an entertainment license like it could be

1:11:11Justin Davis:food or drink the answer to that question is no that's not too confusing also just remember the original wolverine no wait that the answer does confuse me saying it's not an entertainment license no means that it is an entertainment license yeah is that am i understanding correctly But it wasn't a movie. Or a TV show. Not a movie or TV show. So it sounds like a comic book game, like Silver Surfer. Yeah, or like a band. Although I don't know if there's any on the NES. That's entertainment. Yeah. So yeah, that would work. Yeah, I don't know. But that's mostly like Revolution X, but that was 16-bit.

1:11:47Yeah, yeah, yeah. Is this based on a comic book? No, and that's 10. What else is that? No, there's California Raisins. Well, that's the food stuff. Yeah, but they're multimedia. They had a cartoon. yeah for sure i think that would count as tv i'm not sure what about um so it's just straight up books or or it could be like batman on the nes although that was made in japan there's like two huck finn game or tom sawyer games yeah like literary what about bible adventure y 'all although i don't know i call that license who are you licensing the bible from

1:12:25Sam Claiborn:for a while i'll tell you that's that's god is this is this based on a book good or otherwise

1:12:34Justin Davis:yes okay but listen i have to answer yes or no so yes but just think about why i might be putting an asterisk on that it's a radio drama or or or because it's comic book based it's a serial

1:12:52Sam Claiborn:the answer was no is there like the spirit for NES or something like that like Chex Quest I mean any Frankenstein, Dracula all that stuff is books so we can start going for genres there was a Bram Stoker's Dracula game for NES and it looks nuts is that true? yeah there's also a pinball machine it's a really good pinball machine to underrated it's fun as a magnetic track for the ball that makes it look like a ghost does how many questions were 11 you've asked 11 does this game does this license feature iconic an iconic character yes okay that's great it's great iconic it is iconic so i think we're in the right wheelhouse here of your Frankensteins your Draculas, the kids love those We could eliminate spooky games if we wanted to Yeah, let's do it Is this a spooky game?

1:13:57No

1:14:01Sam Claiborn:Iconic mascot NES Should we ask if it's a human? What about Godzilla or something? Yeah Sort of based on a book but not really, it's still tripping me up It is absolutely based on a book

1:14:15Justin Davis:That's not the sort of front. Yeah. Well, what, why were you, you answered that in such a way that like you're giving us a hint. I am. Yes. I was not picking up what you were putting down is the problem. I'm trying to take the game seriously today. I mean, if it was Frankenstein, it would be, you know, it could be based on a book, but you don't think about that much. That's yeah, but not, but not a spooky. What about, again, there's Tom Sawyer. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. but I don't know if that's what it is what if it's like Days of Thunder which is like you don't think about that as a what about like James Bond those are books first

1:14:56Sam Claiborn:I can't think of a Bond game maybe it's like books intended for like children or adults is this licensed like the Very Hungry Caterpillar is this licensed based on books for kids oh sick Nick so maybe there was like i don't even know if this exists but maybe there's like a richard scary's busy town nes game no i know i got it i got it where's waldo i got it it's where's waldo but there's two of them dude where's waldo is the the worst nes game and there's some stinkers on that platform do you is that is it a pixel hunt game well i can't yes well there's many games yeah and it's got a weird subway mini game it's absolutely incomprehensible and the graphics are so bad that you can't tell where waldo is okay so i'm really worried that it's like the second one the waldo adventure or something it's got i don't know i mean he is an iconic character i would argue we all know who waldo is does this character not only wear a hat but also glasses yes that's 15 does waldo wears a striped shirt right yeah no we we don't need it we know it's where it's waldo i think it's amazing that sam and i got there literally at the exact same frame of game scoop i mean it's like with the resident evil answer so the first of its name right is that is this going for the jugular right here is it the first of its name yes is it where's waldo yes which i don't even think when jude submitted this i don't even think

1:16:28Justin Davis:i knew this was an nes i didn't know this was no dude i own this growing up so here's some how did i own this no i'm a huge i am and was didn't you like rank the waldo books yes i was no dude stay stay don't i'm gonna take my headphones off but don't okay i'll be right back okay you guys are not gonna believe did you see that there's a second one also i didn't know there was a second one it's called like the great waldo search it's yellow this one is a blue cartridge or a blue uh box you guys are never gonna believe who developed this game oh my god yeah i don't Look at the Castlevania logo for the castle, by the way.

1:17:04See that? Okay, I'm back. Oh, wow. I have every single Where's Waldo book that they made. There is Where's Waldo, the mighty magical mix-up. There is Where's Waldo, Double Trouble at the Museum. Are some of these rare? Is that why you're spotlighting? There is Where's Waldo, the amazing journeys.

1:17:23Justin Davis:There's got to be hundreds of these books. Have you 100 %ed all of the Where's Waldo books? I'll show you one more. there's where's waldo destination everywhere so i went i went deep i went deep deep down the where's waldo rabbit hole um a few years back i lost my mind a little bit if i'm being honest and um and so as a kid i was huge into it and i was waldo most years for halloween and so this game is terrible like it's terrible it's legitimately like you know a bottom like bottom tier uh nes game but i had convinced myself i was a dumb kid and i convinced myself it was great and this is probably i probably played this game more than mario 3 if i'm if i'm being honest and like and and and it's hard to like you know find a way to play it for yourself because it's hard for me to articulate what makes it so bad you have to move this tiny little reticle around the screen to like spot Waldo and it doesn't move very well and it's hard to even get it centered over him and the graphics are so bad and there's so few pixels in the scenes that you can't tell where Waldo is.

1:18:32The one clever thing it does is it randomizes the scene so he's in a different spot every time. Otherwise you know it wouldn't be a game. But like sometimes it's like well that guy is a stripy shirt and then when you get it wrong it goes and then you have a certain amount of time to win and then it's just it's impossible to win on the harder difficulty. I don't think anybody's ever done it. And I have fond but terrible memories of Where's Waldo on the NES. I think any gamer of our age has a game that's just terrible, but we still played it for a thousand hours, right? That's true. This was mine for sure.

1:19:06Justin Davis:Mine was Jekyll and Hyde. Mine was Jaws. I'm amazed that you had this game. I like Jaws. Fighting Force 2 for PlayStation 1. Justin, I was saying that you guys are never going to believe who made this game. lay it on me it was bethesda oh yeah hell yeah yeah i did that waldo bethesda made this game and then it was published by thq early thq and i looked up so it's classic i looked up the instruction manual and learned only by looking at the instruction manual what thq stands for does anybody know this i do not toy headquarters toy headquarters whoa that's a good name i never knew that so can i um i'll drop one piece of waldo lore on you and then i'm gonna have to stop because otherwise i can keep going for a long time okay but is this author still alive uh martin yeah he's alive but he's stopped he's old now and he sold the rights to waldo and hasn't made a new illustration in a long time have you found him well author illustrator um so waldo has a girlfriend named wenda and you're finding wenda in the books too i think but that's not the lore so it's like you know find waldo find wenda find this is the stuff you're finding in the scenes but in the original waldo books in the first couple books you're finding wilma and like then they just changed it to wenda and i never thought too much about it i'm like okay whatever they decided to like rename the girlfriend but there's one waldo book in which wilma and wenda both appear and it's like find wilma and her twin sister wenda and then after that waldo's just with the other one and that's it that's the lore okay all's fair wow cool wow well nicely job i thought that was going to be i guess so i thought that diablo one was going to be too difficult probably but you got there the kids book question was super clutch yeah that was clutch that's why i was trying to say yes it is a book but you're you're going to be imagining a lot of words that are not in this book yeah i wish it was tom sawyer but this was a good yeah yeah sorry thank you for the suggestion jude from poughkeepsie new york viewers very variant covers they re-released all the books with hiding in a new spot so i had to get i had to get all the different variants wow i dude i like don't even don't even let me get going because there'll be no stopping me okay we're learning all sorts of things about us today viewers listeners if you have your own suggestions for video game 20 questions email them to me at the email address gamescoop at ign.com and i keep forgetting all my funny jokes uh this episode i wanted what the last comment i want to make about phyzzent is that my favorite comment on this news article was that the name phyzzent was too close to physical so sony had to distance themselves from it wow good isn't she lovely and that is all the scoops that we have for you this week thank you nick thank you sam thank you justin thank you to Jobert and Mariah and everyone working behind the scenes to make this episode possible my name is Damon this is IGN Game Scoop and we're out

1:23:34Thank you.

1:24:04Thank you.

1:24:47Justin Davis:the weird thing about the resident evil movie is that capcom doesn't seem to be involved with the promotion at all yeah very sure and they're like the capcom logo is not on the trailer or anything is really like the nintendo and sonic or the mario and sonic movies the nintendo logos all over the place what the fuck i don't know it's like someone the rights to the film rights were i would assume that's universal right in someone's hands and they're like we need to move forward with this or the rights are gonna we're gonna lose the rights so let's just make you know get this movie made and we'll hire this hot director and like capcom's not really involved at all that's my guess and it's one of those like this director wants to make a horror movie but doesn't care about Resident Evil.

1:25:29Justin Davis:I mean, he does care about Resident Evil. He's a gamer, but... But I mean, he's not putting Leon in it. I expect it'll be a good movie, just not a particularly Resident Evil movie.

1:25:41Sam Claiborn:I kind of prefer that, though, in all honesty. Just give me a Resident Evil flavored movie. Nick, did you see we had a mid-preview of Final Fantasy? I did. I was very envious. I'm very excited. I haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

1:25:58Justin Davis:But I think people are very high on resonance.

1:26:03Sam Claiborn:Oh, wait, we have a mid-preview of Final Fantasy VII Revelation? Yeah, Revelation wasn't positive. Really? Ooh, I'm curious. Yeah, I'm curious to see what Haim said about it. I haven't watched our preview yet just because it pubbed on a very busy day, but I'm excited to check it out when I get home. Honestly, if it's more of the same, but just more, like substantially more, that's fine with me. but Resonance I can talk about Resonance briefly I did finish that demo on the plane I think it's very good but people I think overly glaze we don't have time Nick people overly glaze how we do have a pack too oh you know this is a return to form for Final Fantasy it's a mobile game that they repackaged into a full game buddy take it easy it does feel that way the story does the story feels very just bare bones was like okay i'm here for the gameplay but the gameplay is very good the headline for this

1:26:59Justin Davis:episode is it's about ocarina of time which when i thought of i thought surely in the nearly 30 years of ocarina of time's existence someone has written that down somewhere but i couldn't find

1:27:11Sam Claiborn:an example of it so can you do a comma fizzint it i mean well done fuck it we'll do a live but every now and then i do finesse them fucking thing sucks there's no words on it

1:27:32we don't get viral videos like that anymore no yeah this is a the lamenting the death of the monoculture it's like an underrated part of that is like there's no means that one's never gonna not be funny. He's so mad. He gets so mad. And then he like turns on a dime.

1:27:51Justin Davis:He's like, and that's our show. Tomorrow night, sting. That's why everybody's excited about Nintendo.
