A bonus Hangout episode where Ant and Dec welcome actress Anna Maxwell Martin, then discuss her career and upcoming work. They also read a comedic audience script (“The Geordie Gauntlet”) and stage a scene, plus tease her new Apple TV series “Star City” (set in 1969, Soviet space race alternative to the moon landing).

3:25Ant McPartlin:Branded cup. I bet I've got a branded cup and a coffee. Now I'm happy. Are you happy? Uh-huh. How are you? I'm okay. How are you? I'm good, thank you. I'm intrigued as to why we've got a third microphone. Sorry, I couldn't make a barbecue at the weekend. Yes. Sorry about that. That's a shame. I had a barbecue at the weekend and didn't come. I didn't come. I went up to Newcastle. I did invite you. I know you did. I didn't invite you. I'm not saying it sarcastically. Well, it sounded sarcastic. Well, how else do you say that? Sorry, I didn't call you barbecue on Sunday. I did it. Yeah, you did. I did it.

3:59That's in the mind of the listener, that is. It wasn't in the mind of the speaker. Right. There's a third microphone.

4:05Ant McPartlin:There's a third microphone. Let's get down to that. I can declare I do not know why there is a third microphone here today. Don't you? No. Well, I can declare I don't know either why there's a third microphone here today. The plot thickens The mystery deepens Anybody? 5:15That's my face as a trophy

5:17Ant McPartlin:For those of you just listening, Anna's now checking out the shelves, having a little look around. Case in the joint, seeing what she can steal. Do you like that? We had it on a series of Saturday Night Takeaway years ago. Oh, is this you? Yeah, can't you tell by the big forehead? You've got a nice little... Pixie nose. Pixie nose, yeah. Thank you for coming. This is a nice surprise. This is a nice surprise. Yeah, it is. It is a nice surprise. It's always a lovely surprise. For those of you that don't know, Anna was on the last series of Saturday Night Takeaway with us. Yes, when it ended. You were, yeah.

5:52Ant McPartlin:It wasn't your fault. You didn't get us cancelled. But Anna was a star guest announcer for us. Yes. We had a fantastic night. And you played Read My Lips, where we come down and you had to put the headphones on. Oh, God, yeah, I shrieked my way through that. I freaked my way through everything. I remember you being very excited. I am very excitable. Oh, yeah, yeah. I feel like, because I didn't expect it, and I was thrilled. No, do you know, when I did Would I Lie to You? I got so, I was with Lee Mack. He's funny, isn't he? Really funny, yeah. I was like, the whole time. My crotch was sodden when I was, honestly.

6:33I got just like, I've got to chill. Yeah. Calm down.

6:44Ant McPartlin:I kept receiving a play. Which one? You and James Corden. Oh, the constituent. Yes. Yeah, we had a good laugh on that. Did you? Yeah, James is a laugh. Yeah. He keeps everyone really jolly. Yeah. He loves work. He's good energy, isn't he? Yeah, he wouldn't let anyone moan about, ooh, can't be able to do it tonight. He'd be like, no, no, fuck up. Yeah. It's true though. I love work. Yeah. I love work. Yeah. I love work. We're very lucky to be in a career where we love going to work, aren't we? Yeah, we really, really are. That's why I really don't moan about it. I'm like, I really love my job. I'm so lucky to be doing my job.

7:17What age did you start acting? I was singing first. So like I, I'm not, obviously not at the level you two were. You couldn't really call it singing. Yeah, come on. I had my own album out, actually. Did you? In the shops. Yeah. I didn't think you two had an album. Three? We had three? What? I can't even believe it. Well, four of you count the greatest hits. You had four albums? Yeah. God, in my mind, you only did one song. Yeah, I know. In most people's minds, we've only done one song.

7:47Ant McPartlin:We'll send you them if you want. Do you want us to send you them? Oh, please. We'll send you the greatest hits on CD. I'm going to do a little video for each one. Like I'm in the video. Do you do that game in the car when you pretend you're in a video and it's that song? I make myself cry in the car. Yeah, you know, you really pretend like you're in a really bad place and you're listening to the song. I love it. It's one of my favourite games. My friend Charlotte and I both play it. And actually my friend Neil and I both play it together at parties. that is I mean that is as an actor to be able to do that anyway it's actually difficult it's way more difficult you try and play that next time at a party or a barbecue you two together you won't stay you won't not laugh I'll give you five seconds if it's a serious song you have to take it really seriously you'll laugh within five seconds you won't be able to sustain no way it's a very difficult game very difficult game to cry more difficult than football no not to cry not to laugh oh okay right you've got to stay in it yeah We did quite a lot of pop videos because we had more than one record.

8:47Yeah, but that's just you two jumping around in tracksuits, wasn't it? Well, we had a couple of ballads where we had to stand at windows. Oh, no! We did. And then the rain would come down on the outside and we would kind of, no? No. Have you ever done Who Do You Think They Are? No, no, it did happen. You said no, like it didn't happen. I'll tell you, it did happen. When I say no, I mean, I couldn't. I couldn't look out of a window. You could. I couldn't. I couldn't. I couldn't. On Who Do You Think They Are? Me and Diane were talking about this. They do say, oh, just have a little think about what you've heard.

9:18I never think about anything. Do you think about that? You're 88, do you, aren't you? I don't think about that. No, nothing. There's nothing coming through. No, really. So they go, right, just think about what you've just heard there. There's quite a lot. And I'm like, I'm not thinking about anything. I'm just not thinking about anything. They just try to think about something. And look out to the sea.

9:41I can't, I can't. I can't. I was like, I can't, I can't look out. I can't look out. Please, guys. They went, please, we're going to put the characters to do it for half a second. Just look out.

9:54I can't look through a window. I can't look out to see.

9:58Ant McPartlin:I could just do it a lot. But if you had that in your script saying Anna looks out or Patricia or whoever your character is looks out to see contemplatively. I could do it. There you go. Right, okay. Your character can do it but you can't. No way Anna could look out to see. My daughters are older now and I was talking about starting off in Biker Grove and acting and stuff. She said, I can't imagine you as an actor. I was like, why? She said, well, could you cry? I was like, well, yeah, I'm sure I probably could. I said, we'd have to give it a good going Biker Grove when I was like 15. I said, so I'd have to try.

10:27What were you crying about on Biker Grove? I cried a lot of things. Look at the ocean. Look at the ocean and cry. What were you crying about? Look at the wind and cry.

10:35Ant McPartlin:I was crying because I was addicted to our kid machines. That's not funny. Well, that would have been funny if you were crying whilst on the arcade machine. I got caught stealing money to fund my arcade addiction. Dressed as a teenage mutant here at Earl. Oh, I tell you what, I did see recently, I saw you on the assembly on ITV. Oh, yes. And apparently you said you had a crush on him. Yeah. On Declan. I want to clarify. Yeah, please do. I was really clutching. It wasn't that when you were addicted to arcade machines. I was clutching. Right, okay. because they said tell us a secret they said tell us a secret my mind my mind it was like a white a white sheet went yeah I thought I can't say I'm a klepto I although you did did I didn't you did I talk about shoplifting yeah oh he said I've got no the problem is I've got no filters I've got no recollections of things that have happened I can't I'm having no thoughts.

11:40I'm just like a goldfish. Ding, ding, ding, like that going around. So I was, I just plucked something out of the air. I'm sorry. I couldn't think. So I just said that. I thought it was something that's...

11:52Ant McPartlin:Is it special? How special do you feel now? It's charming. I'm about to show you how easy it is to cry on camera.

12:00He seems to be swallowing a lot.

12:03Ant McPartlin:That's very good. Your throat goes tight. I think to cry you just have to don't you do that really widen your balls

12:17I'm trying that it's not working on my eyeballs oh I get it now listen the thing is lads when I was at school I went into the careers room yes pretty similar to you so they went what do you want to do Ant and Debbie what do you want to be singers so they went I went in and said what do you want to do Anna I want to be an actor. And I went, right, let's think of something more sensible for you. So you have to do your work experience, don't you? Yes. So I thought, well, I'll go and do archaeology. Did you? Did you? Oh, my God. Was it amazing? Oh, my God. By the look on your feet. The first night I cried.

12:53I got in the bath of SoCo. I went, Mummy, I can't go back. My mum is hardcore. She was like, you're going back. Did you go to a site then? I went to a site. I did. But all you do, honestly, have you ever done any of this? I'd love to. You wouldn't love. Right, you go like this, you're like this.

13:12But for those of you just listening. That's all you're doing all day. And I'm slowly moving a finger across the desk. You're moving, you're looking for tiny fragments of nothing. You're just very slowly going through the dust. Well, it's not dust in Beverly Hills. With a brush, a little brush. A brush or a thing. And then you go into the shed and you have your cup of tea. They've all got Leveller's t-shirts on and you're so frightened. I'm so scared to be like that. I'm sure this won't be the experience for everybody because they'll be in the different bands now, right? Yeah. They don't all love the levelers, right?

13:47Ant McPartlin:Levelers aren't even together anymore. No, they're not. They're not. There'll be different bands around. When you were doing your rocker, did Tony Robbins did not even turn up? No. Oh, God. God, he was big news then, wasn't he? Yeah, he was. Time team. Time team. Time team. God, that was the biggest show on TV. That was. It was. that was a cool thing I think in my opinion that was a cool thing to do for work experience what did you do for yours? I worked at HMV front of house chatting with everyone no not really selling CDs back in the stocking room in the stocking room yeah and I was in Biker Grove at the time so I was I was acting in Biker Grove that's why they had to keep in stock room because the girls would have gone mad maybe front of house I never thought of that what did you do Ant?

14:29I worked well I was on Biker Grove and so they wouldn't give me days off because I was filming. So when I had an afternoon free, I would go into the office and photocopy the script.

14:39Ant McPartlin:We were working from when we were 13 years old. Is it from 13? Yeah. Wow. It was brilliant though. But we still had to go and do work experience to take a box, I think. Do you ever get bored on sets? No. Kids, sometimes they get really bored, don't they? When you're on a kid's show and you've got loads of other kids around. Oh, two mates. Yeah. We'd get bored on set because we had more fun in the green room because we had a pool table. So we loved being in the green room. Yeah. And then if we weren't on set or in the green room, then you would have to do, if you're under 16, you had to do schoolwork upstairs.

15:09Did you meet on Biker Grove? Yeah. How soon did you fall in love? Was it like the first day? No, it wasn't actually. We weren't in scenes together for a good few months. And then it wasn't until our characters were friends in Biker Grove that we kind of hung out together. And let's get ready to rumble. Our first date was a Newcastle United game. Right. So we went to see Newcastle together. Okay. And we hit it off. Can we talk about Motherland? Yeah. Did you love doing it? I loved it.

15:40Ant McPartlin:It was so good. I love them. I love them. Oh my God, I love them all. They're so funny. Yeah. We're all sort of comedy in different ways, but I tell you, so funny. Paul Reddy. It's so, so, so funny. Like 12 hours a day, me and I, be like, sweaty crotch. Really? Stop it, Paul. Stop it, Paul. Paul. Not again. He is very funny. Really? Yeah, they all are. It's brilliant. Oh, it's brilliant. It's such a good show. There is nothing better, though, than coming to work and just knowing that you're just in for a laugh all day. All day. I think I approach every job like that. Do you? Yeah. Yeah, we tend to, though.

16:23I want 12 hours of having a laugh. But even when you do something like Line of Duty,

16:28Ant McPartlin:because I think that was... Oh, I don't write a laugh. Did you? Yes! Because you never smiled in it once, did you? Because your character in it was kind of a badass. Yeah, and I've just played the worst badass in this show I've just done. She tortures people. She's a terrible, terrible Russian KGB operative. Is this Star City? Yes. So I've seen the trailer. Yeah, it's really good. I really never say that. It's actually quite good. But it looks right on my street. I like everything about it. I like Soviet spies. I like the space race. It's epic, Anne. I can't tell you. Yeah, you're like, whoa, oh, oh my God.

17:06Yeah, it's great.

17:07Ant McPartlin:So for anybody that hasn't seen the trailer like Anne has, can you give us a little tiny... And me. Can you give us a little synopsis of what it is about? It's set in 1969. It's behind the Iron Curtain in Russia. And it's about, it's set in a sort of space hub, space station. And they want to be, the Russians want to be the first to do everything. So it's an alternative telling of the first person landing on the moon. and that happens for Russia rather than the United States. And then it's all the machinations after that. So at the Space Centre, there's massive intelligence, KGB listening in. You know, it's a very dangerous place to be.

17:43So I head up that. So I've got my polystyrene gun. I'm waving that around a lot. Oh, my God. I wouldn't have cast me. I just wanted to say, I wouldn't have cast me. Do you read a script like that? And when something like that comes through, you just go, I can't wait to play this. Yeah, I couldn't wait to do that. Yeah, she's absolutely, she's, my boyfriend said the other day, because she just does give so little, she's beyond badass. Really? Yeah, like, Lionel Gigi was badass, but Ludmilla is beyond badass. She was a tank commander. Right, okay. Again, I wouldn't cast me. And in my office, on my set, it's a bit like this.

18:23Yeah, yeah, of course. But in my office, There's a picture of me in my tank in the Second World War, and it's one of the most special pictures I've ever seen of myself. Well, surely, weren't tank commanders, weren't they quite small to fit in the front? What are you saying? I'm not a 10-ton test. No, no, no, no, no, you're not. I've never seen you were picked for that because you looked like you could have been a tank commander. Oh, is that right? You could have been a tank commander because you're small. You're hurting all our feelings today. Yeah, well done, aren't you? Well, I'm saying you're small.

18:55How's that hurting your feelings? The new duo here, you're out. Yeah, exactly. I forgot this one. Well, Jemima could never get in a tank. She's too tall. Well, I didn't know that that's why I was picked. Right. To be a tank commander, but I was driving a tank.

19:09Ant McPartlin:I got down to the last two for the role, actually. Did you? Yeah, I did, yeah. No, it was just for driving the tank during the Second World War. Yeah. I wish I had been against you for the role. That would have been great, wouldn't it? That would have been fun. And it was the writers of For All Mankind. Yeah, but I don't know that show. That's a space show. Yeah. So that wouldn't be my vibe. I'm not into space. I'm very much on land. Are you? You don't, you're not, you're not part of like these moon conspiracies. Have you ever thought about what the moon, we've talked about it. Yeah, we've talked about it.

19:40Ant McPartlin:We've had it on here before. We've talked about this loads. Some of our viewers and listeners have been sending in. We did a conspiracy special because we love conspiracy theories. What is the moon conspiracy? Oh, there's lots. It's made of cheese. That's hollow. The hollow moon theory. You heard this? that when the lunar module landed on it, it runs... This isn't our period. It's not our period. It's a new period. Your brains are made of cheese. One's cheese and one's hollow. I mean, she's not far off. Your rap name's Cheese and Hollow.

20:15That's not our period, is it? I bought your first single, actually, and if you bring out your second single, it could be under Cheese and Hollow. or rap alter egos is this why is this why you booked her because she just gives her all the way through is this why yeah is this living up to what you thought it would yeah well done heckless corner well done but honestly I'm really excited about it when is it on when does it start I'm gonna say end of May end of May 29th I think and can I 29th of May 29th of May I watched the trailers to the very end Anyone you'd love to play or any character you don't think you've ticked that box yet that you want to do.

20:55I feel like I've done most things, but do you know what? I would quite like to do something a bit quieter, like a little love story or something. Oh, that's nice. That's probably what I'd like to do next. Or maybe I'd do a play next. In all seriousness, we'd love to do some more acting again. We would love, we miss it. Yeah, we do miss it. I write and I'm going to write you both. I'm going to write you both apart where you're the most evil little... Okay. Can't you write us a couple of badasses? No, you'd be good... like serial killers or contract killers. That's it.

21:31Ant McPartlin:We'd like that. Hit men. Hit men. Okay. You'd smash that. Don't make empty promises to us. It's not up to me. It's up to the commissioners. Well, well. We had lunch with William Boyd and William Boyd said to us the writer? yeah the author and he said to us is that she's William Boyd? and he said I've got a film idea for you two he says I'll tell you in a bit so we had lunch or you can join twins well this is the problem this is the problem we don't know we had lunch with him and then we went anyway so no we didn't know so we had lunch with him and we got to the other day and she went oh I must tell you that film idea his wife entered went hello William and he went oh hello darling come in take a seat meet the boys blah blah blah so we start chatting to the wife we're like get to the film idea William and she went darling we have to go we've got that appointment and he goes oh yes I'm so sorry they were off we never heard the film idea you've got glasses why have you got glasses they're cool Anna's popped her glasses on because we've actually got I don't have some reading then got a script for you we've got a script have we?

22:32in the drawer behind you in the bottom left drawer so these are scripts have we been sent in scripts? we've been sent in a script we asked our audience for a script with three characters so there is a leading lady.

22:45Ant McPartlin:Oh! This is called The Geordie Gauntlet by Betsy Thrumble. In this rom-com drama, two completely opposite Geordies, Antoine and Kevin, vie endlessly for Belinda's affection. So Antoine, I presume that's me, charming, slightly competitive, wears a mysterious hat. Kevin, also charming, even more competitive, wears a wickerberry. A wickerberry. I love that. I love that as one word. Wickerberry. Wickerberry. Wickerberry. That looks like a Wickerberry. That's a Wickerberry. Oh, God. Is that my hat? It's the same hat as I always wear for these things. God almighty, guys. There's a candelabra down there we need, apparently.

23:28Ant McPartlin:Right. Scene one is in a fancy... Hold on, you haven't read out what Belinda... Oh, Belinda, sorry. You're supposed to read that. What is Belinda like? She's an elegant woman who is clearly exhausted with both of them. Yeah, I picked her on now. I think you'd be good at that. Right. Scene one is in a fancy candlelit Italian restaurant. There is one table but three chairs. Antoine and Kevin are sitting on either side of Belinda. Should we just imagine that? You could have just stretched a candle. We're supposed to be sitting on either side of Belinda. Should we put Belinda in the middle? Come on, Belinda.

24:00You should direct.

24:03Ant McPartlin:I'm very bossy, aren't I? Oh, this is a bit damp. Sod and crotch. Not me. Oh yeah, you're right, it was me. He's got a sodden crotch. I've either carried over my sodden crotch, or I've sat in a sodden crotch. Antoine leaning in, intense. But Belle, you haven't lived until you've seen the sunrise over the Tyne while sharing a portion of cheesy chips. It's spiritual. Cheesy chips? Talk about low-rent Belinda. I've got two tickets for the opera. It's four hours long and in German. It's the height of sophistication. Lads, it's been three hours. I just wanted pasta. Look, I'm the one who ordered the sparkling water for the table, Kevin.

24:45That shows foresight, leadership, husband material.

24:48Ant McPartlin:Well, I held the door open and I didn't even use the automatic button. I used me actual muscles. Ha! You, muscles, you wish. Is it too early to ask for the bill? Kevin! Kevin, Kevin, is that me? Yes, you, Kevin. Softening his voice. Soften your voice, Kevin. Look, Bill. Oh, it's got rubble, isn't it? It's softening his voice.

25:12Ant McPartlin:Look, Belle, we can't keep fighting over you. It's clear you've got a choice to make. I just wanted a glass of wine, my sofa, and a box set. So, a Netflix and chill then? My own. Point taken? There's a pause. The three remain silent, looking at the camera and sigh. I've got a sigh at the camera. There we go. That's it. That's the one. It's hard to sigh, isn't it? Why can't I do that?

25:46There you go, there you go. It's good. I go wobbly. You're fading out.

25:52Ant McPartlin:So, no pressure at all, Belle, but it would be good to know who's the winner. What? Yeah, I don't want to pressure you either, Belle, but we can't live like this. For what it's worth, I like you. I really like you. More than I like cheesy chips. That's comforting, Antoine. Very sweet. I'm sweet too. Do you know what? Why don't you both close your eyes? Sorry, this is a kissing scene. No, we're not doing a kissing scene. Why not? We can pretend. We can be a good night with a kiss on my cheek. Linda sits perfectly still. Antoine leans in from the left. Kevin leans in from the right. They both close their eyes, puckering with immense focus.

26:31Ant McPartlin:Just as they are inches away. Oh God, this feels like... Just as they are inches away. Belinda silently gets up. Antoine and Kevin, unaware, continue forward. Their lips meet in the middle with a very audible moi sound. Oh, he kissed me! Of course he did, it's in the script! Oh! Hey, bloody hell! Why so stubbly? It's like kissing a cactus man! I knew you two would make a cuter couple. Night, lads! Night, Belinda!

27:09Well thank you very much for your strips Thank you Betsy I didn't think we'd get me kissing you so early on in our film career I don't think that they'll get a commission You do not think so No I'm still Let's go back to William Boyd
