In short

Holiday “bonus episode” built around listeners’ postcards, plus banter about diva behavior, TV guilty pleasures, immortality, and kids’ tantrums.

Guests

No guests appear in the episode; it’s just the hosts (Dec and “Heckler’s Corner” co-host).

Guest backgrounds

Not applicable.

Key claims

Dec and Heckler say they’re not really divas, but they discuss requesting a nearer portaloos during filming and reveal they have a “rider” of sweets/crisps they don’t eat. They debate immortality (too boring vs living prime forever) and speculate about what happens to consciousness after death.

Notable examples

A postcard asks whether Dec should pierce his ears for 12 months; they discuss “diva-ish” ideas like short shorts. Another postcard claims a workplace post-it note got left on a desk: “grated cheese and brown sauce sandwich” and “I’ll smash your knees in.” They also read a 102nd-birthday message for Ron and a parent question about worst tantrums.

1:25la la la la la la la cheers hello everybody hi everybody welcome back for another hanging out on holiday with him and me it's your bonus episode it's your monday ep we're still on our holidays you having a nice time man yes you yes good let's get on with it uh no no no i'd say i see

1:51Declan Donnelly:a lot of you on this holiday, don't we? Yeah, we have seen each other quite a bit, actually. So we don't need to catch up a lot. We went for a nice Chinese the other night, didn't we? Yeah, we did. Good food, that, wasn't it? We went for a, you know, when you go to a Chinese and you have a set menu, a banquet, core, the use of the word banquet was never more apt. There was a lot of food. There was so much food. There was like 10 courses. It was ridiculous. Tasty, though. Very tasty food. Very tasty food. You took a little doggy bag home, didn't you? I did take a dog bag home. Did you end up eating it?

2:23This is my thing. You know, when you take doggy bags back from restaurants, I often feel like they stay in the fridge for a bit and then they go in the bin.

2:30Declan Donnelly:I didn't eat it, but somebody in my household ate the whole thing. Was it the guy that I hit on the head with the golf ball? Could be, yes. Yes. He who shall not be named my darling boyfriend. Do not name him. Delicious food, though. And I'm seeing you later. Oh, yeah, we're having dinner tonight. We're doing the party. We're having dinner tonight, Israel. What a treat for you. for me having dinner with me great I feel like a competition winner can you do my voice note as well so we've got postcards from you all yeah go on I was going to exactly say that go on you're doing it you're doing great I was doing well there wasn't I you interrupted me you talked over me again I did I'm on holiday and he's still doing it sit back and drink your tea we've got your postcards I've got a few here this week.

3:19Declan Donnelly:I think you've got a few as well, Dick. I'm going to dive straight into them because this one is a good one. There it is. There's the picture. Can you see it? That looks nice. Nice and cold. Where's that? Reykjavik, maybe? Oh, could be. Somewhere in a Scandi country. I like it, though. I've been to Reykjavik. Ever been? Yes, I have. I haven't. You have. It's very good. I loved Iceland. Did you? Did you see the Northern Lights? I didn't see the Northern Lights. I didn't. I know, I was there for five days and didn't see them once. It was too cloudy. It was such a shame. So I'd like to go back. I'm definitely going to go back.

3:57Declan Donnelly:But I went to all of the kind of, the geezers. Oh, you hung out with the geezers? No, the thermal pools, Declan. It was unbelievable. The volcanic sand, everything's, you know, you go to a beach and everything's black. It's remarkable. A remarkable country, lovely people. I was there for a new year one time. It was great. Anyway, enough about me. Let's get back to you, Terry and Somerset, who says, Hi, guys and hecklers enjoying the pod. I watch every episode. So, Anders having a tattoo to celebrate six months of the pod. Well, a little bit longer, actually, because we're doing it after our holders.

4:36Declan Donnelly:I was just wondering what Dick's going to be doing to celebrate 12 months of the pod. Respect, guys. Terry and Somerset. Good question. Very good question. I was thinking of possibly opening a lovely bottle of Paul Roger, maybe having a glass of champagne. No, he doesn't mean like that. Like, what are you going to do? Obviously going to do anything. That will forever change your body to celebrate the success of the podcast. I've got an idea. Go on. I think Dex should get his ears pierced. Great idea. Great idea. Just came to me. I've been thinking about it for a while. A little hoop. Or a stud.

5:19A hoop. A hoop. I could grow another beard. That seemed to go down well.

5:23Declan Donnelly:Are you going to go like footballery and go quite diamond stud-y deck? Are you going to go simple with a hoop? Could I just get a new pair of glasses? No. We've done that. I'll buy some glasses. Don't worry about that. I still got them. Still got them. I wasn't planning on doing anything, if I'm honest. Should we talk? I think we should. I think if you can give us some suggestions on what DEC can do to celebrate a year of the pod. Well, you could do it at the same time as my tattoo. No, I can't do that. Why? Well, because your tattoo has been a long-running thing from the very beginning. So everybody's waiting for that.

6:02Declan Donnelly:I'll tell you what we should do. When we come back for Series 2 of the pod, if you want us back, if we do another series, then we can decide on what you're going to do to celebrate Season 2. I could write a letter to season one deck. No, that's been done. That's been done. We don't grow a whole ground. Grow a beard or write a letter? Nah. I'm good at that. Nah. We'll have to think. Send in your suggestions. So at the top of the list at the minute, he's piercing his ears. Great. What about short shorts the whole series? Yes. Shorts and a beard like David Bellamy for the whole series. I could wear short shorts for an episode.

6:45Declan Donnelly:Okay. Doesn't float me both. Consider I wasn't going to do anything five minutes ago. Uh-huh. Well, other than what? Just drink champagne on your own? Not on my own. Is it really selfish? How can we enjoy that? You can watch me. I'll do it on the pod. Do you want to just do one where you're drunk for the whole pod? That wouldn't be a very good idea. That might be my last ever podcast. Yeah, okay. We'll see you for the last ever one. Well, we'll have a think. Okay, we will. And please give us any suggestions. They're welcome. I have got one here, and this is a very rainy, rainy scene. Parisian?

7:22Declan Donnelly:Is it a Parisian scene? Could be. Could be. A rainy Parisian night. Night. Where lovers gather under umbrellas to shelter from the rain. I don't know if they're lovers. But it's from Amanda in Cornwall. Hello, Amanda in Cornwall. Amanda Holden. She's got a place down there, hasn't she? In Cornwall. Isn't that where she's from? Oh, she might do. It's from Amanda Holden. It's not Amanda Holden. She says, hi, Aunt Dec and Heckler's Corner Queens. Hey, Queens. Queens. Hey, Queens. Queens. Hey, Queens. Lake. Wow. Lake. Heckler's Corner Queens. You are obviously mega celebs in the UK. Oh, thanks. I'm not sure this is still to you.

8:08But just seems so normal and relatable on the pod, despite this. I know I don't think this is to you this bit My question is Do you each have a story of a time Where the other one acted like a complete diva Lots of love and respect guys Amanda in Cornwall Sent using my actual brain With help from my phone I don't know what that is Have I got an example Of when you were a diva

8:38Declan Donnelly:I've never been a diva it's not really it's not really my makeup it's not really either of our makeup being a diva is it I don't think so no even inadvertently I asked the the most diva-ish thing I've done recently if you can even class it as that has I insisted on a portal near our dressing rooms when we were shooting Holy Moly is that diva-ish well I didn't find a diva-ish because I benefited from that yeah we both used the same portaloons the loos were miles away they were miles away and holy moly is the biggest set you've ever seen and when you see the show on TV you'll realise to get from one side to the other side is miles away for us near our little dressing rooms so we said can we please we didn't de-very stop it we just said can we have a portaloon near the dressing rooms and we got one the next day is that de-very It's hardly diva behaviour to request a port-a-loo.

9:42It's not like we wanted a Winnie bagel with a toilet in it. No. We just wanted a port-a-loo that was just a bit closer to our dressing rooms so we could make it back to set quicker. I can't think of a time we've been a diva, Anne.

9:55Declan Donnelly:I'm with you guys a lot, and I must admit, you aren't divas at all. Ah, that's kind. Yeah, I can be nice sometimes. Could we get away with being more diva-ish, do you think? Could we push it a bit? I think, yeah. How can we push it? Because we don't want to push it too far. Because even your snacks, you don't even go crazy with your snacks. Oh, but the problem is as well, a lot of our snacks that we request, when we don't request them, they'll say to us when we do a TV show, for example, Britain's Got Talent, we're up doing auditions at Blackpool. We come into the dressing room and it's full of sweets.

10:28Declan Donnelly:Sweets, chocolate, crisps on the side. And we've been eating these sweets for a while. And we're like, I don't even like them. I won't name the brand but there's a certain thing that was in the dressing room wasn't there Dick? Everywhere And everywhere we went whether it was Two and Britain's Got Talent or when we go down to I'm a Celebrity or when we go and shoot adverts or when we're on shoots for things everywhere we go the same sweets and crisps and food would be laid out in our dressing room We're like isn't this weird that everybody gets us the same stuff? And then we realised or it was revealed to us that we have a rider and you know when bands and people go places and there is a rider of stuff that they request apparently we have a rider and I didn't even know we had one and on it is sweets crisps chocolate and fizzy pop stuff we don't eat I tell you who requested half of it is Rachel who works with us she'll be listening to this right now Rachel you're the one that likes dried fruit not me so get it off my rider I can't stand dried fruit that's one of my popcorn there's popcorn everywhere we go yeah popcorn and dried mango nobody eats that they don't know do they no dried fruit I just don't get it what's the point what is the point Rachel Rachel you've been rumbled yeah you have anyway we're going to be more divas in the future good we can push it I like this great alright thanks girls I'm going to come up with some ideas of how we can be more diva-ish ask for presents Yes.

12:07From the crew. Yeah, yeah.

12:11Declan Donnelly:Every day. Every day. Every day it has to be Christmas Day when we arrive at work. I've got quite a meaty one here. Ooh. Ooh. This is the scene. Where is that? Is that like a Grecian scene somewhere? Nikonos, do we think? Maybe. It looks hot. This postcard says, Hello, Hans and Dirk. I would like to let Dec know that he calls me to do something very bad at work. Uh-oh. I work for a very posh car company in the UK. Who's that? Roseroyce? Is it Roseroyce? Bentley? Bentley? Yeah, it's got to be. And I always sneakily listen to the pod while I'm in the office. I'm quite inconspicuous about it, usually until the poor state note.

12:57Declan Donnelly:Do you want to know about the poor state note? Yes. Okay, I'll read on. Yesterday, I was catching up on the pod, and I wrote down a food recommendation on a Post-it note for you guys to try. Grated cheese and brown sauce sandwich on white bread. Oh, that's a zinger. So, she's wrote that down on the Post-it note, right? Remember that. Then, as she was listening, Dex dropped his line, I'll smash your face in. I was laughing to myself, thinking, surely, Dex should write, I'll smash your knees in. because you couldn't reach people's faces because you're so small. I mean, she makes a good point. A very good point.

13:35Declan Donnelly:So I scribbled it down on the same poster note to remind myself to email it to you all after I finished work. So she was going to email the pod and that's the food recommendation and her funny little quip. It was today I realized that the poster note was no longer attached to my notepad, meaning it's come off and be left on somebody else's desk during one of my meetings at work at the posh place, the posh call place. So somewhere in my extremely posh professional workplace, I left a note on some unknown person's desk which says, grated cheese on brown sandwich or I'll smash your knees in.

14:20Declan Donnelly:Let me know if any job openings come on deck, you owe me I'll smash your face in from Katie oh that is so good I would love to know where that post-it note ended up oh my god does anybody else in her company listen to the podcast they must do they must do because if you do and you've got the post-it note get in touch and let us know I like the idea of the chief executive of Rolls-Royce or Bentley or a luxurious British car company having a post-it note on his desk saying threatening to smash his knees in if he doesn't give out a grated cheese and HP sauce sandwich. He's going to be kneecapped if he doesn't get the right sandwich.

14:59Declan Donnelly:I'm what? I'm being threatened. Would you try, firstly, would you try that? Absolutely. That sounds right up my street. Grated cheese and brown sauce sandwiches. You used to have brown sauce sandwiches, didn't you? Yeah, just brown sauce. Or brown sauce on toast. Or on toast, but, or just sandwich. Just bread, butter, brown sauce. Absolutely love it. It's like a bacon sandwich without any bacon. It's basically a vegan bacon sandwich. It is. There you go. The original vegan bacon sandwich. Yeah, I would try that though. Very great cheese and brown sauce. Sounds good. Melody is the cheese. Melody, she doesn't say.

15:36Declan Donnelly:She was too busy writing down. I'll smash your knees in. Greatly and then all kind of bound together with brown sauce. Bound together. Never describe a recipe as bound together. That does make it sound appealing, appetising one bit. And it's all bound together on bread. I've got one here from Jazz Lazenby, who's in Whitley Bay. Hi, Jazz. Ever been? Been a lot. Same. Love Whitley Bay. Hi, guys. Listen to the pod where you were discussing immortality and Dex said he couldn't be bothered with it. And I had to comment as I agree. My granddad will be 102 in August. Wow. And he's had a great life and still has all his marbles, but I hope to God I don't inherit his genes for longevity.

16:29I think being immortal would soon get boring, just like living for over a century and getting frustrated that you can't do what you used to. Anyway, if you could wish my grandad Ron a happy 102nd birthday for next month, I'd be forever grateful. And so would he, as he knows how much I love you both. Respect, guys, Jazz Lazenby. Happy 102nd birthday, Ron. And that's on a lovely postcard. Oh, that's nice. Of a night scene. That's nice. And some steps. Oh, spooky. Steps at night. Yeah. Not Claire and H and Lee and Faye and Lisa, but some steps. Happy 102nd birthday, Ron, for August 2026. Yeah, happy birthday, Ron.

17:14Happy birthday, pal. That is incredible. So he was born in 1924, if my maths is correct. Wow.

17:21Declan Donnelly:That's amazing. Look what he's seen in those years. I get his frustrations if you get an ola and you can't do the things that you used to be able to do. Like play five-side. Yeah, I get all of that, right? Because your body ages and it must be really frustrating and your mind slows down and all of those things. But if you're immortal, I presume the age isn't an issue to you. So you get to live almost in the prime of your life forever. so you get that's a different that's a different outlook on things yeah a positive outlook that's a different proposition yeah well that's what immortal is isn't it because Ron's not immortal he's just he's lived to a ripe old age of 102 I mean unless he is he's just not telling us but that's that's a different thing he gets imagine if you're immortal you get to see all of this wonderful world again and again and again imagine what Ron's seen in the 102 years he's been on this planet, the changes that have been made, the steps forward and technology.

18:28Imagine what it used to be like for him

18:31Declan Donnelly:when he was growing up and to now. It's crazy the change. Yeah. And you get to live that again and again and again. Oh my God, that's exciting. Where do I sign up? I don't know if I can be bothered. So you're excited to die? oh yeah well I'm excited to die but I just don't want to be here forever but you can't wait for it no I can't wait for it and I will yeah hopefully for a long time but I don't want to be forever like there there must be more to there must be more to life than life yeah I agree does that make sense yeah what's the next one what's the next part of this soul's journey yes you know where does your energy go next yes because it's great it has to go somewhere it doesn't just stop it moves from one thing to the other thing.

19:21Yeah. What happens to your consciousness when this body stops working? Where does this consciousness go? Because that doesn't stop, does it?

19:28Declan Donnelly:We need to do a lot of spin-off podcasts, I think, to answer a lot of this. Experts. We need experts. We need experts because Jemima and Fiona and sexy and nice are not really giving us anything back here. You just sit back like innocent bystanders and you don't. Like, do you know anything about the next round where we go to next? what happens after we die. Do you? Yes. Yes, but no one's going to share that publicly. Yeah.

19:57Declan Donnelly:And also, where's Lola? She's still on holiday in London. She's slacking, yeah. She's gone to Brighton now. Has she really? Yeah. Good for her. Good for her. Okay, next postcard then. Happy birthday, Ron. Yeah. Happy 102nd birthday. Okay, I've got one. Oh, I like this. Look at this. Look at this Manhattan at night Hiya lads Hiya Heckler's Corner Hey And sexy and nice Hello They're silent Silence So I'm a big reality TV fan right Okay Real Housewives being a top babe My husband Although he would never admit it Also gets sucked in And enjoys the goings on Of rich American ladies fighting The question is, is there anything your watch watch that you hate and complain about, but actually you secretly love it that they're watching it?

20:56Declan Donnelly:For example, are you a secret Kardashian fan? Question mark. Love to you both. Nikki from Andover, Hampshire. Hi, Nikki. You've hit the nail on the head there. The current Mrs. D is a big fan and watches all of the Kardashians shenanigans. And I'm like, I haven't got time for this. I cannot be bothered oh this is interesting because it is quite fascinating in their life isn't it and their existence like what they do and how they go on and what you know their world so I do find myself sucked in by the Kardashians yeah we don't watch anything like that really it's my girls especially Poppy watches a lot of like The Sunrise Turned Pretty and Off Campus was that the recent one there's a lot of those kind of late team dramas on my planner.

21:50Declan Donnelly:My algorithm thinks I'm a fan of those shows. So it just offers me those kind of shows all the time. So I've got to really sift through those shows to get to the shows that I actually like. That's the problem with having a lot of people in the household using the same account is they all think it's one person. Do you have a guilty TV secret? I don't know if I do, actually. A bit of Love Island? No. No. I'll watch. I used to watch a lot of Love Island because the girls used to watch it so we'd watch a bit of it together but I haven't seen Love Island for a while. Have you? I like a bit of Love Island.

22:24Declan Donnelly:Yeah, I know you do. Do you still watch it though? No, not religiously. Yeah, that's the thing. Quite a commitment. It is quite a commitment. I can't do that and the Kardashians. No, you can't. I haven't got time. I have a beautiful postcard. Look at that cherry blossom. Oh, lovely. Gorgeous. I don't know why there's a bus parked under there. That post really spoilt the photo. Yeah, why? It's from Claire in Chesterly Street. That is not Chesterly Street. I love Claire in Chesterly Street. Hi, I'm Dec in Heggler's Corner. Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. I was behind on the pod by quite a few episodes, so I've been catching up.

23:02Definitely an eight banana rating from me. But my two-year-old son, Ethan, is not impressed. He keeps running up to the TV shouting, no more and switching the TV off. I put you guys back on and he keeps doing the same. So unfortunately, I think it is a zero banana rating from him. I think if you sing Wheels on the Bus, it may change to an eight banana rating. With you both having young children, I'm wondering what the worst public tantrum your kids have ever had and what was it over? That's thanks from Claire in Chesterly Street.

23:39Declan Donnelly:Well, first of all, Claire, I don't take that personally because that's exactly what Wilder does if there's something on the TV that he doesn't like. He's two as well. He goes, off, off. If it's not Peppa Pig or Ben and Holly, everything else is off. Even one of the England games, one of the earlier England games in the World Cup where he kicked off at five o 'clock, I think it was. We all sat down. Everybody was sitting watching the TV and he just walked in front of the screen and just covered it up with his hands going, off, off, because it wasn't what he liked. So you can't take it personally when it comes to a two-year-old's TV taste.

24:14I don't think my kids have ever had one of those really bad, like supermarket aisle tantrums. You know, you see them ones with kids lying on the floor in a supermarket aisle because they're not allowed a packet of Pombas. Yeah. I don't think I've had that. No, I don't have, actually.

24:32Declan Donnelly:I still think we should do a kids' TV series. A kids' animated series. Yeah, I agree. Can we tell you this, Hecklers? We had an idea years ago that we were going to do an animated series where our dogs live next door to one another and you see our legs, but a bit like the old Tom and Jerry's where you never see the top half, but you hear our voices. So you see our legs, but you see our dogs. And then they get up to mischief with other famous people's dogs. So we see, so it's like, it's like a stellar street of famous people's dogs and it's animated. That's so cute. We might do that. We might get Mike to do a little development on that.

25:13I love that idea. If you've got any ideas for what pets you think famous people would have, send them in to us, hanging out at bellabox.com, and we may put them in the hypothetical TV show that we're about to develop.

25:26Declan Donnelly:Yeah. Someone's got to have a hamster. Oh, yeah. Who would that be? Julipo's got a snake. I know that for a fact. Well, I don't know it for a fact. In my head, Julipo has a snake. Yeah, who would have like a ferret? Chris Martin, probably. Chris Martin's got a ferret. Yeah, absolutely. That's right. Yeah, that's good. Yeah. Jamie Oliver's got a golden retriever. Alison Hammond has a parrot that talks like her. Cat Dini has a cat. Cat Dini has a cat. Anyway, we'll pitch it. We'll pitch it soon. Yeah, it's all there. It's all there. We've got it. But who is their nemesis? Who's nemesis? The animals.

26:10maybe Simon Cowell has got a sinister little pussycat yeah

26:15Declan Donnelly:I agree like a white fluffy one or one with no fur one eye one eye cut yeah a patch yes an eye patch great okay I'll picture twice of you next week well I think that's all we've got time for yeah that is it's really good I do like the postcard pod don't you yeah if you've got any more postcards for where you are on your holidays send them in to us hangingoutatbelterbox.com and we'll read them out here and have some holiday chat.
