In short

Ashley Roberts and Scarlett Moffat discuss ITV’s I’m a Celebrity (including their 2012 Australia experience and returning for a later South Africa series), what the jungle was really like (sleep deprivation, extreme challenges, loud night noises like baboons), and their candid reactions to contestants and specific moments. They also talk about their later TV work (Saturday Night Takeaway, Gogglebox) and do a “South Africa or Australia” game that ends with drinking revolting mixed ingredients.

Guests’ backgrounds

Ashley Roberts is a former I’m a Celebrity runner-up (2012 Australia) and does breathwork; Scarlett Moffat is a former I’m a Celebrity winner (2012 Australia) and previously worked in an office doing Gogglebox.

Key claims

The show “changed my life” and shaped their careers and UK move; morale and bonding (“Bush Sisters”) were crucial; they couldn’t watch their own trial footage due to fear of snakes.

Notable examples

David Hay’s caring behavior; Beverly Callard’s “doesn’t care” attitude; Sir Mo Farah’s forgiveness; Sunita and Gemma Collins’ redemption arcs; bush babies living in Scarlett’s thatched-roof lodge; the “South Africa or Australia” ingredient cup game (hot sauce, milk, vinegar, salt, pickles/gherkin, blueberries, bananas).

0:09Ant McPartlin:Hello everybody, good morning, good evening, welcome back to The Hangout. For more hanging out with him and me, it's our Mystery Door Monday. Yes it certainly is.

0:19Declan Donnelly:The question mark is on the door. It's good, it's going to be good. How are you doing? Alright.

0:24Ant McPartlin:How are you doing?

0:25Declan Donnelly:I know how are you doing. What's this? What is this?

0:28Ant McPartlin:No, how are you doing?

0:29Declan Donnelly:I'm just catching up with you.

0:30Ant McPartlin:I haven't seen you. Oh, yeah, I'm all right.

0:31Declan Donnelly:How are you?

0:31Ant McPartlin:Yeah, is this still going on?

0:33Declan Donnelly:Yeah. You're kidding me. I'm going to see you guys today. Are you? Yeah. A specialist. A specialist in ears. I'm a bit discombobulated today. Discombobulated? That's at me every day.

0:46Ant McPartlin:I've lost my aura ring. I have no idea how I slept last night.

0:51Declan Donnelly:Oh, well. How do you feel? Tired. do you not feel more tired if you wake up and look at your aura ring on your phone and it goes you only slept 6 hours you go oh my god you only slept 6 hours

1:04Ant McPartlin:yeah I go I feel tired today and then I look at the app and I go oh yeah I am tired that's right my aura ring's confirmed and I am tired so stop wearing it then

1:13Declan Donnelly:what well you don't need confirmation that you're tired that you either feel tired or you feel good I'm not into all that you're not into what measuring unless you send me one for free then I'll wear it Right, it's Mystery Door Monday. We have some guests behind the Mystery Door. I can declare I do know who's behind the Mystery Door. You go.

1:40Ant McPartlin:Oh, I can declare I also know who's behind the Mystery Door. Why didn't you know? I thought it was just me that's meant to know. I saw an email, so I know.

1:51Declan Donnelly:What? We accidentally sent it to Dave. What do you mean you accidentally sent it to deck? Accidentally sent it to deck. This was my mystery door. I've not had one mystery door of my own. Now he's muscled in on it. Took the shine off it a little bit.

2:04Ant McPartlin:Well, it hasn't because it's a very, very exciting mystery door. It is. Shall we see if there's a knock at the door and if they're ready? There it is. Shall I get it? Do you want to get it? I'm going to get it.

2:15Declan Donnelly:You well. It was meant to be my mystery door. Don't shut the door. Don't come in there. Everybody's ruining it. This is my mystery door. It's... Ashley Robertson's Girl and Mother! Yay! Hello. Hello. How are you? How are you? Oh, we're all scrubbed up.

2:37Ant McPartlin:The Bush Sisters are in the house. Bush Sisters. Yeah. It's okay now. What? I'm just sitting there.

2:46Declan Donnelly:I'll sit here. Okay. I'll sit this. I'll sit this. How are you? This is lovely. You like it?

2:52Ant McPartlin:Welcome to the hangout. You've got snacks and things. Get me seat level up. Is that up? Am I too high? That's too low. That's too low. That's too low. That's about actual size, that is. Welcome. Thanks. It's lovely to have you here.

3:08Declan Donnelly:Who is it? I'm a celebrity South Africa star tonight. Yeah. And I TV on. Finally on. And I TV on. I didn't think Deke knew about this. I think this was going to be my surprise. But he did know about it. Sorry, I knew. Somebody put him in on an email. Oh, it was going to be a surprise just for you? Yeah, well, I haven't. No, it's a surprise for me. It was going to be a surprise for Dan. A lovely surprise, but he found out. His Bush sisters. He's a little surprise. Have you had Bush sisters tattoos yet? Not yet. Good idea, all right. Oh, I don't know. You've got a tattoo. I can see you've got a tattoo behind your ear.

3:44I've got no tattoos. Have you not? Not one. This will be good. My bush one will be my first one. My bush.

3:51Ant McPartlin:And where will you get it? Bush be my first. And where will you put it? Well, it's got to be on my bush. It's got to be on my bush. It is. It's got to be on any of them. Are they matching? Absolutely. I think it's one of those ones you have half each and when you put them together, they make a half.

4:15Declan Donnelly:Right, right. I wasn't expecting this kind of age. Me neither. Me neither. Oh, my God. Yeah, I never thought of you like that. I keep having this visual now. I know. It was like rubbing. Yeah.

4:31Oh, no, that might have started the fire quicker than what we were. Because it took us forever. Jesus, honestly, if more wasn't in there, we'd still be waiting by that fire. It's so true. Sorry. We said family friendly that week. so that'll get cold do you know what

4:49Declan Donnelly:I'm dying I love it if there is a hanging out with the Bush sisters I tell you what I'm subscribing to that yeah and it sounds like an ITV2 spin off it does it's a good sign sounds great right oh my god oh god that was really funny the great thing is when you're doing the prescription you see what you want so the whole reason you're here today is because I'm a celebrity Bringing it back in. Yeah, I'm trying to. Dirty boy over here. How are you feeling about watching it? Because you haven't seen anything, have you? You were obviously there and you did it. Well, I was there in body. I don't know if in mine.

5:28I don't know if I've trauma blocked a lot of it out. Really? But look, from the offset, it's so much bigger and crazier. And I watched them all. I mean, I don't know if it was just because I was in it, but sometimes I would take a step back and be like, this is good telly. Yeah. Honestly, like, I would go wrong. Everything is bigger and more outrageous. Like, from the second we get there, you feel like you're on a movie set and some of the challenges as well. And then also just the portions and everything is just extreme. In Australia, like, where yous are, your little station in the trees, isn't too far away.

6:09Like, it's still a trek, but it's not. Whereas here, we are just alone. The baboons. The baboon, all we can hear on a night is baboons. They're loud, aren't they? Yeah, and they sound like human screams. Oh, it's awful. Screams and grunting and all kinds of things. Oh, yeah. That was David here.

6:27Yeah, there was a lot of noises going on throughout the night. Yeah, in these hammocks there was.

6:31Ant McPartlin:When you see it, the two of you, you form a bond really quickly. And you stick together. You become the Bush Sisters. You form a bond really quickly, stick together, and you are a delight to watch the pair of you. even when we were out there filming we loved having you down at the trials because you were fun and we'd always have a laugh with you any time you know they'd say who do you think should do the next challenge we'd go Scarlett Ashley because I think that's the thing like in there the only thing that gets you through is the people and I think we're good for morale I'm not really good at anything else other than morale do you know what I mean I'm not very physically cleared I'm not mental capacity is not all there you're quite smart though do you think I've done you so many times for knowledge of the show and yeah and your intellectual mind oh thank you yeah no don't say that about yourself and i suppose for the pair of you as well you both had such amazing experiences in australia scarlett you won it you became queen of the jungle ashley you were runner up this changed my life this show on this yeah the reason why i live in the uk and i feel like

7:33Declan Donnelly:i'm an adopted brit huh yeah yeah you are you are no it's because of the show that's why i'm here So it's crazy now and wild to then go back 14 years later and be back in the mix with everything. Because I remember when you guys first came in saying, we're doing this legend thing. I was like, eh, eh, niche, niche. And then never say never. Because we tried to tough you up for the first one.

7:58Ant McPartlin:And you were like, no, no, no. Oh, I'm pleased you didn't do it the first time. Are you? Yeah, for me, just solely for me. Because I can't imagine what my experience would have been making there without you. Honestly, we really like. You taught us how to breathe. because Ashley does breath work for context and I've been breathing wrong with all life so do you know what I mean I'm breathing better now it was yeah I mean I think that technique definitely helped me this time around and then I got to share that with everybody but you know we're a little bit older maybe a tiny bit wisier wisier yeah I can tell so when that call came in then for this for the second series you'd obviously seen the first one what was your first initial reaction, Scarlett?

8:42To be honest. How much? How much? No, honestly, this show, without being too sentimental, did change my life. I was working in an office when I first got offered I'm a Celeb because I was doing Gogglebox. And I remember going into the office and people being like, you're listed as going in the jungle. And I was like, well, of course I'm not. I wouldn't be here, would I? Da-da-da-da. and then so it did literally change like me the whole trajectory of my life of my career like it was a whole decade ago like it like the opportunities that i've been given for like me and my family since that show is amazing so i think for me it's a no-brainer like and i like love the show i don't know why i still love it because you haven't done the australian version

9:29Declan Donnelly:can you watch it and watch it as a viewer? I was supposed to see a little clip the other day of a trial that I've done in this series and I actually couldn't even watch it. Really? Because I was trying to face my fears this time around because on the first series, I didn't tell a single soul how scared I was of snakes. I have done some hypnotherapy actually because - Have you? Yeah, because I've wondered like, where does this come from? And I grew up in Phoenix, Arizona in the desert. And so we have snakes around a lot. And one chased me when I was quite young in the pool. And it was... Oh, well, they caught.

10:04Yeah, that'll do it. That'll do it. Yeah. And then there was, you know, we've had rattlesnakes, like, literally around our land. So, and my mum was always, like, you know, trying to chuck them over the fence. And, like, it was quite... It's a different landscape over there. It really is different than County Durham life. I mean, I'm really scared of pigeons, but luckily they don't ever grow up. This is another thing. She's so funny as well. Like we just laughed a lot in there. We did laugh so much, man. It was so good. We were traumatised. We did have a good laugh.

10:36Declan Donnelly:How did you find the other candidates? Because that would be the one thing. I think I would happily do Amazelabh, right? Yeah. I think I would be. Yeah, I would. Come on. Be him. Be him. I would not. For the record, I would not. Out of the two of us, I think I'd give it a good go. Yeah, because I'd like sleeping outside. guys. I don't think the bugs in that would bother me too much. The eating I'd have a bit of an issue with, but you just got to do it. You can't pop off and play a golf store. You can't play golf. No, that would be in the contract, but I had to play golf. But it would be the other people in camp.

11:09That's what I would struggle with, I think. It's all challenging because you're sleep deprived, you're missing home, you're missing food, you know, a nice shower. Like even just the brushing of the teeth. We had that baking powder recently. Oh, yeah. Because they even brush our teeth, man. I think we're fresh. I'm sure. We were all minging. We were stunk. We'd like breathe on each other and go, do I smell? Yes.

11:34Declan Donnelly:We were watching you both in camp and you're pretty good at pulling people up when they say something that you think is out of order or wrong. Oh my word. Let's get into it. I've never met anybody, genuinely anybody like him in me life. Doesn't care. And he really doesn't care. And do you know what? Like that's actually part of his charm. Like, I must admit that is what I was, like, drawn to because I just found him so fascinating. But sometimes he'd say things and I'd sit on my hammock and I'd go, I'll let him carry on a bit. And then I'd go, no, I'm going after him. But as a viewer, you're watching it and we'd come in and we'd watch you do that and we're like, good, Scarlett.

12:10Declan Donnelly:Well done for sticking up. Because some of the blokes, I'd be like, how are you? Like, I was waiting for them to have their time. And then I'd go, no, I don't think anyone else is going to. So I'm going to have to say something.

12:20Ant McPartlin:Hold me a pint, I'm going in. Yeah. It was interesting because I was with him, you know, in 2012. We were reunited, right? Of course, yeah. But it's just like, I guess maybe, I don't know, things haven't changed and maybe like the world has a bit. I don't know. I was like, well, hey, honey, we can't say that. But then when you say that to David, he'll go, who says we can't say that? Yeah, yeah, I know. And then it's having a... Well, I think his mum summed it up because he said to me, He went, what do your family think about you doing this? And I said, yeah, they said, you know, just go in, just be yourself.

12:56He went, yeah, my mum said the opposite. She said, be anybody but yourself. And she said, just do the trials and sit quiet. That's what his mum said to him.

13:04Ant McPartlin:Well, he didn't take her advice. No, he didn't. But if there'd be moments where, you know, like something happened while I was in the trial, oh, I think I got my legs all banged up on one of the, and he was coming over and really making sure, you know, getting out the first aid kit to make sure I was okay. Was he? Right. He'd help fasten my shoelaces, because I wasn't very good at it. Like, he is caring. One of my favourite beefs of the whole series was just between David Hay and Beverly Callard. Oh, I loved it. It was unbelievable. She just did not care. I love Bev, though. She's brilliant. Bev is the moustache.

13:33She just doesn't care either. We were in there literally with people who just like, yeah, give no shit. Just like me. But Beverly, she's like quirky, but in all the best ways possible. Like she has like a canal boat that she turned into a cocktail bar. Like she's just, her life is a bit like, she'll tell a story as if it's a really average thing. And I'm like, that's unbelievable. Like, yeah, she's just got so many stories. Even people like Sir Mo Farah, like, oh my gosh, like he is just such a wonderful person. And just listening to him, like, I really felt as if, like even his story and how much he is forgiven of people He's an angel.

14:17Oh my God. And I was like, he made me want to be a better person. Honestly, yeah. Like, I know that sounds deep, but the way he spoke about people, I was like, God, sometimes I think I'm a bit of a b***h. I'm a bit of a b***h. He's need to reel it in. Because he and him, I was like, no, no, he is such a lovely person. And I'm really proud of people like Sunita and Gemma Collins, is that it's like their redemption. And she says herself like, she's coming as Gemma, not as the GC. And I think we see a different side to her. and Sunita, I mean... She was slaying. She was unbelievable. I thought it was Sunita Slay.

14:50Also, I kept going, how are you in the same outfit as me? Because it looked like it had been custom-tied. Yes, she had her own style going on for sure. She kind of styled everything.

15:00Declan Donnelly:When she got out of the helicopter and got out of the car to come in, she had three hats on. She could be scared. I can't remember that. She wearing three hats and she had a visor and what? Yes, yes, yes. Forgot about that. She's a legend. Are you having a watch-along party tonight? Yes, of course. Oh, yeah, good. Going to get kebabs in, chicken kebabs. Chicken kebabs. Chicken kebabs in. Yeah, all my family's come. It's basically going to be Gogglebox, really. We're all going to watch it with a kebab. And I'll be up at heart in the morning talking all about it as well. Of course. I guess I've got to stay up late.

15:34Declan Donnelly:You know, it wasn't just hard for you guys. It was hard for us as well, for me, wasn't it? It wasn't. It wasn't. It was tough. It was tough. It was tough. What, because it was warm? why was it that wasn't warm

15:45Ant McPartlin:it was hot but you have people holding umbrellas keeping you over there hey I bet they cut that bit out they'll cut that bit out where you just have people holding umbrellas for you while we're just there sweltering and starving covered in mud and guts

16:00Declan Donnelly:didn't you have a bush baby in your room though a bush baby no bush baby did we get a little bush baby down oh we've got products Yeah, you've got merch. You've got merch. You've got merch. That was quick.

16:19Ant McPartlin:In my lodge, it was a thatched roof and I came back from - Lodge? Sorry, carry on. You're making it worse. Don't call this a lodge. It was a lodge a bad choice. Yeah, it was a lodge a bad choice of roof. Okay, in my digs. Yeah, in my digs. Yeah, digs, yeah. Now I came back from work and my fruit bowl, right? There was an orange on the side and it had been half peeled and there was wee on the worktop.

16:48Declan Donnelly:I just love oranges. I get excited. What can I say? I didn't know where you were going with this. There was wee on the side.

16:53Ant McPartlin:And I went like that. Oh my God, it's wee. Somebody came around. One of the guys came to pick us up. And I was like, have you seen this? I said, there's, looks like wee on the side. And I said, isn't my fruit's been out of go at? He went, oh, you've got bush babies. They live in the thatched roof and they come down and they're like this big. They come to eat your fruit and then they go again. Oh, wow. Bush babies? Bush babies in my roof. Oh, me half-leaf. I feel like that's hard. I know, that was half-leaf.

17:18Declan Donnelly:Can we talk about Saturday Night Takeaway for a little bit? Yes, please. Because obviously when you both left the jungle you came and played on Saturday Night Takeaway for a while. Oh my God, yeah. Did you love it? The best thing ever. Really? It wasn't a real job, was it, really? No. No. It was for us. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, you probably did, like, a lot more input and stuff. I just rocked up and, like, got to go on helicopters and trains. Got your makeup done. Got my makeup done. Got to dance with, like, Kylie Renogue and that. I really miss it. Oh, my God, it's the best show. I know you guys needed a rest because there was a lot going on.

17:54It's the best. Just watching you. And I remember also getting out. I'd never done live telly before. And they're like, here you go. there's a telephone and I was like beep boop boop bada bada bada la la la I was like oh my god I was just so nervous beep boop boop beep boop boop boop but it was so fun we also went on the road as well we did we did the Saturday night

18:15Declan Donnelly:we took that was good fun that was so fun I remember that yeah I remember when me and Joel Thomas did an undercover and the woman didn't know who we were not an undercover you know where we go in the passport photo oh yeah yeah yeah and we just popped out and she was like who's this we were like hello she must have thought we were like maintenance workers or something she literally had no reaction at all me and Joe we're like oh that was a bit awkward

18:43Ant McPartlin:it's not quite a brilliant ending when you have to explain what we're doing I do goggle box

18:48Declan Donnelly:I was working in an office

18:51Ant McPartlin:and then I got a call to go and I'm a celebrity

18:53Declan Donnelly:who was your favourite guest ever that you were there for there's so many I mean it was great We had Ed Sheeran, I remember, when he was quite still like A-team kind of vibes. Hugh Jackman was on the show. Yes, Hugh Jackman. Yes. He was a nice guy, wasn't he? He was lovely. Oh, my God. Very tall. Very tall. Very tall, handsome guy. Yeah. He looks nice. Well, compared to us two, most people are tall. God, there was loads of people on. I think for me it was Jennifer Hudson. Oh, yeah. That was my first ever air. Wow. And then we got to like sing Spotlight on the stage with her. That's right. And like, oh, my God.

19:29But I was just like, this is crazy. This is so good. But you see everyone on there, really.

19:35Declan Donnelly:We had Michael Sheen on the podcast a few weeks ago and he was a guest announcer. And he was saying, the great thing about it, you come down, you speak to you guys on stage. He said, this is really exciting. And I'm going to be here, am I? And we're like, no, no, you're at the back. In a box. In a cute little room. In the naughty corner, he described it. It's a bit weird doing the guest announcer from back there.

19:58Ant McPartlin:You said you literally couldn't put us any further away from you two. We're in the back corner. See, even the audience is standing there going, why is he this far away from the corner? It's like a sheep. Oh, my gosh. That was fun times. That was good times, yeah.

20:11Declan Donnelly:Before you go, apparently, I don't know this, I wasn't part of this, apparently there's a little game. The game is called South Africa or Australia. Right. You're going to be working in teams, so Ant and Dec versus Ashley and Carla. The answer will either be Australia or South Africa. If you get the answer right, you can add whatever you want out of these ingredients to your cup. If you don't get it right, the other team can choose an ingredient to add to your cup. At the end, you'll burn the drinks and drink them, so the better you do, the nicer your drink will be. We need to choose a wet base.

20:49Milk?

20:50Declan Donnelly:Milk will always calm everything down. But we want milk as well. You can have milk if you want. Should we have milk as well? Sure, why not? Okay, we'll go for Mill. Okay, girls. Which country is home to the world's largest fence? Are you kidding me? What a great question. World's largest fence? South Africa or Australia? We stay in South Africa. Are we? Yeah, we stay in South Africa. No. Are we trying to do a South Africa game? Well, they've got to choose. Hot sauce, baby. Hot sauce. We like hot sauce. It's fine. Hot diggity dog. Oh, Kelly, it is. Hey, chicas. Over here. That's it. Two drops. That's it.

21:28Oh!

21:29Declan Donnelly:That was cruel. That was heavy-handed. After everything you've done to them on the show, there was no need for that. How about... No, did we? What have you got in there so far? Hot sauce and milk. Maybe a little gurgle in there. I like a gurgle. Do you? I do love a gurgle. Damn it! Damn it! Put them all in. Put the whole jar in. Couple of gurgles. One each. There you go. When we have hot sauce, pickles, little milk, that's true. You sure? That's okay. Anne and Dec. Which country has the most camels? Camels. Oh, Australia.

21:57Ant McPartlin:I seem to find there's a weird fact about... Australia has the most camels outside of...

22:03Declan Donnelly:No, in the world. I think it's in the world, yeah. Australia. Correct. Yeah! Oh, well done, well done. Shall we put an Oreo cookie in there? Or banana? What about some fruit? Yeah, fruit. Which country is home to the quokka, also known as the happiest animal in the world? That sounds Australian a bit. Quokka. Oh, I think that sounds African, you know. What does it? Quacker. I just feel like that... Can you do Australian accent? Nope. Can you? Look over there, it's a quacker. Quacker? Quacker, I can't do it. No, no, we said can you do an Australian accent.

22:34Ant McPartlin:It's a quacker. Good day, mate, it's a quacker. Good day, good day, quacker. No, I'm fucking South African, actually. I'm going to go for Australia. Australia? Yeah. Yeah! Yeah! 23:21Ant McPartlin:The most chicken feet... The most chicken feet... Just smug me on fingers. It's a thing of gherkins.

23:29Declan Donnelly:I've got no idea. I mean... Australia or South Africa?

23:31Ant McPartlin:It sounds Australian. Australia. No, South Africa. Oh my gosh! Let's go for the vinegar. Oh, brilliant. Great. Amazing. Thanks. Whoa, all right. Leave some for you guys. I expected a cup full. You get to choose this time. I don't care what we think. Well, maybe a bit of mustard, because that's just... Is that what that is? Or a lot of salt? Oh, salt's brutal, isn't it? I think salt should be... Yeah. What? That's it. That's normal. Yeah. Whoa, whoa, whoa! I can feel me hearties hardening.

24:07Declan Donnelly:I can feel me hearties hardening now. Right, are we blitzing? In our cup, we've got bananas, milk, vinegar and salt. We've got milk, hot sauce and blueberries in ours. Oh, and some pickles. Cool, some gherkins. Right, shall we blend first? We'll blend. You've got blend. Doesn't look as full as Oz, does it?

24:25Ant McPartlin:I think I was heavy-handed with the milk. That's so dry. That looks good. That's nice to know. I think you'd be able to still smell the gherkin. Yeah, that gherkin is... Sorry. Scarlet, Scarlet. That gives me flashback. Scarlet's got a very weak gag reflex. Oh, lardy me, that's rotten. That is rotten. It's pungent. It's very gherkin heavy, that. The looks make it deceiving.
