In short

Perrie Edwards (Little Mix) discusses solo pressure after the group, nostalgia for Little Mix, parenting and work-life balance, her new single “Passenger Princess,” and how she approaches songwriting and inspiration. The episode also includes “Mystery Door Monday” banter, World Cup talk, and a segment where listeners share misheard lyrics and guess the real songs.

Guest backgrounds

Perrie Edwards is a fellow Geordie from the Northeast/South Shields area, formerly of Little Mix, and a solo artist with a new release. She has lived across places including Weymouth and New Zealand (as a child), and she’s a mother of two (Axel and a daughter).

Key claims

Going solo felt “lost” because Little Mix provided a clear sound and strategy; expectations are intense when you’re already famous. She prefers writing about past experiences that still feel relatable, not only current happiness. Performing live is her “happy place.”

Notable examples

Misheard lyrics game includes “For you I peed myself dry” (Coldplay “Yellow”), “Your socks are on fire” (Kings of Leon), and “I popped out my tip” (unknown). She also mentions X Factor memories, moving to London at 16/17, and wanting a movie-musical vibe for future performances.

Well, that's cool. No, you don't understand. It went perfectly. Real offer, down to the penny. They're picking it up tomorrow. Nothing went wrong. So, what's the problem? That is the problem. Nothing in my life goes to smoothie. I'm waiting for the catch. Maybe there's no catch. That's exactly what a catch would want me to think. Wow, you need to relax. I need to knock on wood. Do we have wood? Is this table wood? I think it's laminate.

1:23Okay, yeah, that's good. That's close enough. Car selling without a catch. Sell your car today on Carvana. Pick up fees may apply.

1:33What's that? What's that? Huh? What do you mean by the table? Hello, everybody. Hello, everybody. Welcome back to The Hangout for another hanging out with him and me. Welcome back to The Hangout for another hanging out with me and him.

1:45Declan Donnelly:Why are you sitting all the way over there? Why? Well, this is where I normally sit. Well, what's all this about? Well, that is because it is Mystery Door Monday. Why have you got two cups of tea? They're both for me, actually. Thirsty boy? No, they are. They are both free. Why? Because one was cold, but it wasn't cold enough. So I asked for a cold of water. Oh, it's water. Yeah. I thought your tea was cold. No, water. Cold water. He's got two cups here, if you're just listening. So water in one of your cups and tea in the other. Mm-hmm. What? What's in? Bob water. Why? Because one, it wasn't cold enough.

2:27and I thought

2:28Declan Donnelly:I don't want to waste it. So you've got a room temperature water. It's still pretty cold. And a colder one. A really cold one. All right, J-Lo. Huh? What's on your rider? Room temperature water and a cold water. And biscuits. No, the biscuits are because we've got a very special guest this week. It's not even a plate of biscuits. That is a veritable platter. It is a platter of biscuits because we've got a very special guest who Dex knows nothing about. I can declare I do not know who this week's guest is. I can declare I do know for the first time, I think, on this whole series of Mystery on Mondays.

3:01Declan Donnelly:Yeah, I think it is. I think this is the first time you know and I don't. Good, right? You don't like being out of control, do you? You're quite a control freak. He's a little freak. A little bit uncomfortable. He's a little freak. Can I ask you a question? He's a little freak. Sorry, just like, what do you call you a freak? Can I ask you a question? Uh-huh. Do you feel weird drinking water out of a cup? No. I feel weird now drinking water out of a cup. Why? I haven't done it for ages. I drink water out of a glass, but I hardly drink water out of a cup. Do you drink water out of a cup? I like water out of a cup.

3:33Do you? I prefer to drink it out of a plastic cup when I'm at home.

3:36Declan Donnelly:A plastic cup? Yeah, I feel like I'm a cat. What are you, a toddler? Yeah. A sucky cup. You know when you get the water bottles, and like see you get the, everyone's got the sucky thing at the top. Oh, yeah. Oh, I can't stand that. I hate them things. I have to screw them off. That's what I always have. Where? Oh, you've actively went out and bought one? Yeah. Psycho. You're the freak. You're all a little freak. Have you been all right or should I just bring in the mystery guest? I've been great. I'm looking forward to the World Cup but I guess we're not going to talk about that. Not really. What's that got to do?

4:14Well, just the football season is finished now. Uh-huh. That's all put to bed. And now you're looking forward to the World Cup? I'm looking forward to the World Cup. I couldn't get my head in the World Cup while there was still domestic programme going on. I agree. So now... I agree. I'm looking forward to the World Cup.

4:27Declan Donnelly:Okay, good. Good, we'll chat about that later. Okay. We should do like a, we should do a World Cup special though. Don't you think? Yes. Like a World Cup draw. Should we do a World Cup special? Like Gary Lineker, he's going to New York and he's going to do all his podcasts from New York. Yeah, that would be good. Yeah, but, yeah, yeah, no. No? No, we can't do that. How can we not allow? We could just do a draw maybe. Okay. And talk about it a lot. Okay. Right, we should get cracking and wait, hopefully, for a knock on the door, which will signify our very special guest coming in to the studio.

5:05Declan Donnelly:That knock is not happening. But I will keep talking about it until that knock does happen. Still not there. Still no knock at the door. Oh, there it is. There it is. Right. Should I get it? Yes, please. Okay. I'm excited. Please welcome the very special guest that is fellow Geordie. It's Perry and Well. Hello, how are you? Hi. Come on in. Come on in. How are you? Very well, thanks. Are you in here? Yes, you are. That's a very nice surprise. And it's not always great at surprises. Oh, really? But this is a great surprise. It is a very good surprise. So I was up in Newcastle and I have been up in Newcastle, seeing the family, seeing my daughter, who's at uni there.

5:44And I was like, we've got to get more Geordie guests on the podcast.

5:49Declan Donnelly:We're lacking in Geordies. Nice. Okay. Would you like a warm-up room temperature or cold? Oh, cold, please. Yep, there it is. There it is. There it is. Oh, thank you so much. How do you feel about drinking your water out of a cup? It's a bit odd, isn't it? It is a bit weird, isn't it? Yes. I'm cool with it. Really? I've got two on the go. I can see that. Are they both water? Yeah. Okay, that's random. Well, that one's really cold and that one's just cold. Like, I like a cup of tea in a cup. It's a hug in a mug, isn't it? It is. So it's like something warm and cozy. I think when you drink water, you're drinking it out of a glass or a bottle.

6:23Yeah, it's a bit odd. I'm not complaining though thank you anyway have a little go on it what do you think of that yeah it's fine it's great thank you

6:32Declan Donnelly:I find it weird I find it weird so how are you thanks for agreeing to come in very good thank you and make this even more Geordie than it already is yeah have you had many Geordies on yet hmm just me and you yeah oh no that's it yeah no we haven't you're the first Geordie guest yeah you are yes we've talked about Newcastle a lot obviously right do you miss it do you go back a lot I do I try to. I think because my family are from all over the place. I've got Weymouth family. Oh, right. Then I've got my nana is still in Shields. And then I've got my brother still there. But then a lot of my family just live everywhere.

7:07Because you were born in the Northeast, but then didn't you travel around a bit? So I was born in the Northeast. Then I moved to Weymouth. Right. Then I moved back to the Northeast. Then we moved to New Zealand. Floggy hell. Yeah, it's so random. And then I spent a year and a half in New Zealand. and then I used to speak like with a Kiwi accent. Did you? Yeah. How old were you then? Like 11. Right. And then I came back and then I stayed the rest of my days in South Shields.

7:33Declan Donnelly:So that's how you got the accent, well and truly back. Yeah, I've been everywhere. That's crazy. It's weird, isn't it? What was New Zealand like? Unbelievable. The best experience of my entire life. Was it? Like we loved it, yeah. Would you ever retire there? Have you got plans to take the kids there? I don't know because I think like when I was a kid, I loved it so much. And I remember coming home from school one day and my mom being like right we're going back to England and we were like why you've ruined our lives and she was like because I just want to go back and I understand it now that I'm an adult and I've got kids and I know what it's like but when you're going to school and you're making friends and you're making a community and you're making a life for yourself it's different my mom had nobody and when I think about it now I'm like I don't know how she could for even a year and a half yeah it must have been so lonely not having friends and family there and I get why she wanted to move back so in hindsight i'm glad we did because obviously then i did x-factor and won and i did really well we would have brought that up if you hadn't mentioned it of course you know keeping it humble but yeah so it's like the best thing that could have happened really yeah and also like going to new zealand it's not like you can pop home you literally can't be further away she felt so isolated and you know what bless her heart she got really chubby because all she did was baking.

8:45She was so bored. All she did was bake. She got into baking bread. I didn't explain you. She got so chubby. She did, bless her heart. She was just so bored. She hated it there.

8:56Declan Donnelly:Was the weather good where you were? Because it's not always great. No, it rained. It depends where you are in New Zealand. It just rained a lot, yeah. Did it? Yeah, it rained a lot. But I just loved the lifestyle there. Oh, because I always think that when we do I'm a celebrity every year in Australia, the kids play outside all the time. The lifestyle is really cool. Yeah. Yeah. I love Australia as well, to be fair. Yeah, it's amazing. So it is nice. I could imagine myself living there, but it's just so far. It's far away. It's a decision. I think once you make that decision, you kind of have to stick with it for a little while at least.

9:24You can't just get up and go back.

9:25Declan Donnelly:No. You can't. If you get a bit chum, then it's understandable if you put a couple of pounds on. I'm just going to nip on and lose some weight. Yeah, oh, bless that. No, but I have thought about like in the future, maybe spend... Would you? Yeah, maybe I would. So of all the places in the whole world, would it be Australia? Yeah, and especially the Gold Coast area where we shoot our celebrity. It's just so lovely. The food's so good there as well. Yeah, it is really good. And the coffee's so good. Yeah, everything's good. But what we've never done is we've never explored, really, the rest of Australia.

9:54Declan Donnelly:Right, yeah. We just know that one... Apart from years ago when we were releasing music, we went to Melbourne and Sydney and that was it, was it? Brisbane, yeah. Brisbane. But we haven't ever done, like, the Northern Territory. So you need to explore it. Yeah, we need to. I'd love to. Maybe we'll do a documentary one day that we explore the rest of Australia. Do you want to come along? Yeah. Okay. That would be really good. And then we've got New Zealand. Yes. And do some baking. And I'll show you around. And do some baking. No, you'd love New Zealand. You show us our old family home. Honestly, it's so nice.

10:23You show us our old family home.

10:23Declan Donnelly:You're like in documentaries when you go back to your old house. This is where I used to live for a little while. I would love to go back to my old house. Sometimes I stalk it on Google Maps. Do you? Do you? Yeah. Because I lived in Tamahiri at first. And we lived in a massive house with a pool. Because obviously back then you got more for your pounds, didn't you? Yeah. Not now. but back in the day we were like alright and then the next house we moved to because we moved around a lot in New Zealand too don't be fooled Debs loves to move and I remember I remember that house and I look at it all the time on maps just to reminisce that's nice though that is nice yeah it was lovely did you ever did you never do any promo down there with Little Mix or anything yeah we did and I wanted to go to like my old school and see people but we never really got a chat again it was like in and out when we did the gig we left Australia I had a bit more free time.

11:11And I did a radio show out there once and they flew my best friend over from New Zealand. That's such a... Sorry, but the question mark just fell off the door. Oh. It was because that was such a good story. Really? I thought something was slid under the door, like a little... Note. Note or something. I was thinking, It's your best friend! You haven't seen her since. That was... No, but it was really nice that they did that. I was buzzing. That is cute. I haven't seen her for years. Yeah, lovely. And they flew her over.

11:38Declan Donnelly:It was really cool. God, that's amazing. talking to family and friends how was your family? yeah good kids alright? yeah love it I know it's wild going from one to two it's different isn't it? it's the dynamic shift and I think your two are pretty similar to my two is there like three or four years difference between them? so Axel's four and a half right and she's a potato fresh potato fresh out of the oven yes fresh out of the oven she's gorgeous like Axel loves her she's a bit boring for him right now yeah but he keeps getting cute aggression with her like he keeps going oh you oh you oh you just want to squeeze you yeah and I'm like alright be gentle and he's like yeah and he just oh you do you it's so funny though because he's just not like that in general when he's around her but same with Alex that's good that means he like they both are oh you do you do you do you do you and I'm like look at him it's so weird I feel like having a girl in the dynamic has really softened the boys I don't know but I never thought I was going to have a girl ever did you not I just thought I was going to be a soccer mom forever.

12:39Did you? Like proper boy, mom. And then when that pink balloon came out. Even when you were pregnant, did you think it was a boy or you thought it was another boy? At first I thought, I thought, no, this feels different. Like it felt so different, but I was still convinced that I wasn't going to get a girl. I was just going to have boys, which I would have been really happy with as well. And then we did a reveal, just me, Alex and the baby with a baby and the pink balloon came out and I swear he had a breakdown. Really? He was devastated. He just looked at the pink and he went, I don't want it.

13:07and we were like oh and i didn't know what to like do because he was so disappointed and what about axel how did he react yeah no honestly it was wild but even like that whole day i was walking around thinking whoa this is weird it's so strange but obviously she's the best thing ever and i'm buzzing now i've got a girl to do like girly things with and well you've got a bit of backup now in the house otherwise you're just going to be football on all the time but it is oh it is already but he's axles a mini him and she's a mini me blue eyes fair head it's wild oh i love but she's great she's no bother i'm very blessed and then he plans for any more is that it now i

13:48Declan Donnelly:think i might be done right okay well i don't know but you're back to work though i know you didn't hang about i haven't got your troubles up haven't you sat back once no well i was for four months and then i thought yeah but i agreed to most of the stuff i agreed to before the year right right okay so I was like yeah I'll be fine I'll be alright and then when it creeped around I thought oh no but I'm actually alright it's fine and I've got my mum Debs Debs is there or Debs bacon away bacon away she is actually she makes all my bread all the time really yeah but you love her right still oh she's the best honestly no not your mum like work I'm saying so you like oh excuse me yeah I'm pretty fond of the woman yeah she's alright no she's the best no I love I do love work yeah like I do enjoy it and I feel like it's me.

14:34So it's like I get to be myself again instead of just covered in puke. Do you know what I mean? It's nice to have the balance. Yeah, it absolutely is. That's the thing. It's brilliant being a parent and there's nothing better. But also to have your career and have something else to get your head into, I think is really, really important. I love it. I think it's healthy. I think it's good if you want to stay at home with the kids and it's good if you want to get out as well. It's like, I like the balance.

14:58Declan Donnelly:You got a new single out now? Yes. It's good. Thank you. It's really good. Thanks. It's like the closing of the Perry campaign. Right. So this is the last song from that kind of body of work, that last bit of the campaign that I did. And then I'm going to start again. So have you started writing stuff now? Yeah, I have stuff already that I absolutely love that is in the direction of where I want to go, like sonically and that kind of world. So I'm just excited, to be honest. How do you choose what to do? Like, do you get ideas for lyrics first? Or do you think, like, musically, this is the direction I want to go in?

15:35Declan Donnelly:Or do you just wait for inspiration to strike on any given day? I mean, do you know what? It was actually really hard going from a group dynamic to being on my own. Because I feel like when you've been in it for so long, like you two, you'll just be in such a pocket of doing things. And it's such a swing and it's a flow. And you know what you want to do. You know what you don't. You know what works. Little Mix was that. And it was like we had all the strategies. We knew our sound. And then when you go solo, you kind of look at yourself and you think, so who am I actually without the group? I don't know if you should feel the same, but I just felt a little bit lost for a while.

16:09And I thought, oh, my God. And the fact that I could do anything overwhelmed me. Yeah, I'm sure. So it was like, do I want to go more like pop rock? Do I want to go down this route? Do I want to do that? And then I kind of experimented with it. But I feel like with already being on a platform from being in a girl group, people have expectations then. so if I was working away albums after album after album sonically different every time people would probably just get on board eventually with whatever I was doing hopefully and they'd be like oh this is great like Sabrina Carpenter she's been around for years and she's tried so many different things and then all of a sudden it's stuck but I think when you're already established in a big group it's all eyes on you straight away and if you don't get it right out the gate straight away it's almost like people are either disappointed or thinking I was expecting this I But I'm like, but let me just have a minute.

16:57You know what I mean? There's a really fine balance, isn't there, between giving people what they expect but still being able to surprise them enough that... Exactly. It's hard. Oh, this is not the sound that I thought she was going to come out with. Yeah. And then be pleasantly surprised. Exactly. So it's really weighing all that up. It's really weird. And I feel like everyone's watching everything I do already. So I can't even necessarily experiment without people being like, well, is this a sound then? Yeah, of course. But not necessarily. I'm just trying it. Yeah. I'm just trying it. so I'm kind of just like going with the flow and then the Perry album it was very me but it was there was a lot of different kind of things on there sonically so now I think I know the world that I'm in and also you change as a person yeah and you know that will mean your sound will probably change and you'll become you'll have different tastes and now you've got two kids exactly I don't think artists are ever the finished article no you're constantly evolving and I think it's good if you're not yeah

17:50Declan Donnelly:because if you think that this is just this is me and this is how I sound and this is how I sing then you will end up kind of burning out quite quickly I think it's good to be inspired and influenced by lots of different things and travel and kids and families and relationships relationships life experiences the ups the downs everything I think that's why artists love music so much because you can kind of escape in it yeah but another thing as well is like why is she writing about this that happened years ago why is she writing about this that happened and it's not even her life now but what do you want me to do i'm so happy in my relationship and i got two kids like 24 7 like it's not gonna work is it nobody wants to hear me saying how happy i am in my relationship and this that and the other all the time it doesn't work like that like i want to find inspiration from different things in my life that didn't go to plan yeah or that went tits up or just things that are like relatable and people out there will be able to relate to those things because they're going through even though it's something that's happened to you in the past exactly and i always think we're we are all products of the slings and arrows that we've had to face during our lives.

18:50We're products of the people we've loved and lost and the loves we've had. And we are who we are now because of what's happened to us. It doesn't mean you can't write about it because it was 10 years ago. But people are like, oh, why are you writing about that now? Why are you hopping on about that now? And I'm like, oh, good God, I can't win. Throw me a freaking bone here, guys. It's just a lot. But I think like the other side of it is just so freeing. And it's like, Like you can do what you want, be who you want. Express yourself. And it's amazing. And nothing makes me happier than singing. Like being on stage is just my happy place.

19:21Is it? I love it. I thrive, you know? Like I just feel like, oh, there's nothing better than that natural high.

19:28Declan Donnelly:Have you always felt like, oh, I've got a good voice? Yeah, I guess so. I mean, people used to ask me to sing all the time in the playground and things like that. So you kind of awed with you from a young kid that, yeah, there's something there. Yeah. And that's all I've ever wanted to do. like I wasn't good at anything else and like I remember being a kid in school and you know when you go to secondary school and you pick your things that you want to do and like you do you pick French you pick whatever and I picked dance music drama and French I don't know why and then I remember being like in the queue waiting to write down what kind of lessons I wanted to take and some one of my friend's mom was behind and she was like oh you're taking the academic route than I see.

20:09And my mom was like, hang on a minute. Or Debs. She was like, hang on. She wants to be a singer. And I remember being a kid and everyone being like, no, but what do you really want to do? And I'd be like, I've just told you. I'm going to be a singer. And they're like, no, no, no. But seriously, what? And I thought, is this not normal then? Am I never going to be a singer? Is this not right? So I'm glad I stuck to my guns and thought, no, because I suck at everything else. I'll be honest. I'm really bad at everything unless it's the performing arts. I'm really not good.

20:36Declan Donnelly:Oh, I wouldn't have a clue. We've talked about this. I wouldn't have a clue what we'd be doing if we weren't doing this. Yeah, it's wild, isn't it? People always say it on there. What would you do if you weren't working in real business? I don't know. I don't know. I'd be struggling. I would be very good at selling mobile phones. Right. Not cars. That would be a stretch of mobile phones. Oh, that's so funny. But if it's something you're passionate about. I'm not passionate about mobile phones. Oh, no, no, no, not that. I mean, I've got the new iPhone, but that's about as passionate as I get. No, I remember what you do now.

21:06Declan Donnelly:You know your stuff when it comes to phones. Don't give me that. I can get you a good case. Oh, wow. That's snazzy, isn't it? It is good. That is good. I'll get you one if you want. Thanks. Maybe three. What kind of age were you when you thought, right, I'm really going to go for this? Because was X Factor on telly already? Yeah. Oh, yeah. I was a huge fan. Yeah. My mom was actually, she was going to take me to the Australian one. She thought it would be less competitive. She was like, I know. Australia's smaller why don't we like do something there and I was thinking oh gosh let's move yeah yeah again move again but not break yeah no and I thought no that makes sense though it did make sense yeah and obviously everyone like I was thinking oh god people are going to see me from school and I'm going to be on the telly and if I don't make it everyone will laugh and like I was very conscious of that so I was kind of just embarrassed but I'm glad that my mum kind of pushed me into it and Newcastle auditions were cancelled last minute I think they lowered the age as well because I was only 15 or 16 for the first ever audition right and then my mom woke up one morning she was like Newcastle's cancelled we're going to Glasgow and I was like what do you mean and it was like three in the morning she dragged me out took me to Glasgow and then I did the audition there and then luckily it obviously worked out for me and I'm glad but I was terrified I bet I was so scared and that was the first time I've ever experienced nerves and like normally when I'm singing, I'll just sing.

22:34But sitting in a little tent with somebody staring at us, my voice was like Larry the Lamb. And I was like, and I thought, oh my God, what's happening? This is weird.

22:43Declan Donnelly:And that had never happened before. Never happened to me before. You never questioned your audibility in that way. No. Or worried that it might. Yeah. It was wild. But every time I sang in front of people, it was awful. So I don't know how I got as far as I did. I really don't. It's wild. What do you remember about that time? Do you remember it fondly? Or is it all a bit of a blur now because what has it been like 15 years it was kind of a blur but it was also one of the best times of my life i bet like meeting the girls and becoming like four best friends and sisters and everything it was just such a fun experience so remind me that because you you were in a pair weren't you did you we were all solo you're all solo then you got put into a pair then we got put into different groups i mean jesse were in a group and jen and liam were in a group and then we got nose again and then they brought the four of us on together and they were like do you think you could work together?

23:32God, that's amazing, isn't it? Because it was wild. And then you went on to win it? Yeah. Isn't that weird, though? It's mad. But they based it purely just on our height. Did they? Because we were so small. We were all exactly the same height, 5 '4".

23:44Declan Donnelly:So you'd look good together? Yeah. And that was what I was based on. That is crazy. I saw a really funny thing on social media the other day where they said, can you believe the X Factor used to have an over 25 category? We just spoke about that in the back today! And now, as a viewer, you would watch and go, oh go on you old fuck yes oh my god you keep chasing that dream no we just had this conversation and I remember being a kid thinking why don't they just get rid of that category nobody cares about these old people and now I'm 32 I think wow wow but do you think people back then were a lot older at that age than we are now the over 25s look like they seemed older they look like your mum and dad yeah whereas now I feel like a 30 year old's not that old yeah I agree I don't know but oh my god I was so savage I was like get these old these off we cheers give it up already come on young ones give it up you're lucky the ones are real talent so mean and your final was that Wembley Arena was it yeah I remember watching that so good and it just looked insanely huge on TV well I remember watching it because we were cheering for you guys because because of you and Jade yeah so we were like go on the Jordies the Jordies are going to relax back there we definitely had a massive following back home yeah Like that's probably where the majority of the votes came from.

25:00Declan Donnelly:And you've got no idea. I mean, we know, you know, Hosting Britain's got talent that the actors have no idea when it comes to the final of. No. You might think that I'm doing well and we've got lots of support or whatever. Yeah. But you've still got no way of knowing. Yeah, but we kind of convinced... Did you try and look for a little tick in Dermot's eye? No, we just convinced ourselves that it would probably be good if we don't win. Because for some reason, One Direction, like everybody who didn't win ended up doing really good anyway. and we were like it doesn't matter like we've got this far it's almost better if we don't win it's almost better if we don't right and then when they were like little mix we were like we'll take it we're happy anyway we are winners champions but we were buzzing but we had no idea and obviously girl groups never get far on the X Factor do they they're always booted out straight away we used to get papped like going into the studios and they'd be like oh enjoy it while it lasts girls you'll be out Sunday or whatever and we'd be like oh lovely thank you they were so mean to us oh my god that's horrendous I know.

25:58We proved them wrong though, didn't we? Yes, you did. Good for you. And then when you won it, your life must have just been turned upside down. Yeah, it was mad. My mum always says, God, I haven't talked about my mum a lot. She always says like, she's glad she took me, but she almost regretted it. Yeah. Because I was only 16, 17. That was it. I was gone. Moved to London. Me and Jade moved to Notting Hill. We didn't know anywhere in London. So we were like, Notting Hill? Seen the soap? We've seen the film. We'll move there. Didn't know how expensive it was. Jeez. and then yeah so it was hard because we were just away from our families and friends for the foreseeable future then and that was it

26:33Declan Donnelly:yeah of course yeah it was wild we were the same we moved to London we had to wait till I was 18 so we could sign the record contract didn't we yeah and then we moved out in London yeah it was either that or my mum would have to go everywhere if I'd signed it when I was 17 oh and we thought that was probably best not cramping your style of business I was up for it fair enough that's so funny I like Christine. She's good crap. She'll die now on you saying that. That'll be a text alert tone. Yeah, so then we moved and we never really had that moment where we're like, you know when you move out and kids go to university or you move out, people move out of the house and you say goodbye.

27:13Declan Donnelly:We never had that moment of moving out because we just, we went away for a couple of weeks to do this road show and then we came back and then we went away for a few more weeks to do a promo tour and then we came back to Newcastle. Then we just never, kind of went back and i've still looked back on that with sadness that we didn't have that moment i know what you mean it's like oh farewell this is it i'm doing it i'm going you kind of just whisked off yeah it must have been the same for you you just yeah you won the x factor then you went off and did some promo and you'd go home for a bit but then go for a bit longer yeah no it's wild when you think about it isn't it i think at the time you're just so caught up in everything yeah like everything just feels like it's just fast paced and it's gone and it's new and it's fresh and it's exciting but when i look back on it now i'm thinking how did we do that yeah like if somebody initially had said do you want this life this is what it takes will you do it it probably would seem overwhelming wouldn't it and you probably would be a bit scared going into it yeah when you don't know what's coming and you just kind of go in there blindfolded a bit you're like oh this is fun yeah you know yeah yeah and there's times where you think well we've made it oh no we haven't oh it's gonna finish oh it's coming back it's never a straight line it's never like that it's always that's just life though isn't it it's like that I presume in every career and I think when we left as well we'd known each other for five years or something we'd done Byter Grove and then it all started a snowball but for you I suppose you won the X Factor you got whisked off you were doing promo you were recording studios and stuff and you didn't really know the girls that well you were still getting to know each other yeah because yeah you were quite new to each other you know you'd been put together through the show was that tough not at all it wasn't no i think that's why we got lucky because we just it just worked like we just loved each other so much and i remember thinking oh my god this is so cool like and i thrive in a group dynamic like i think we all did um being on our own seemed a bit more like don't and but when you've got each other going through everything and all the dramas that the industry brings and all the ups and downs, like having each other was probably what we needed at that age as well.

29:21Declan Donnelly:Yeah. Because we were so young. And yeah, we were just like loving every part of it together. We say that though. That is very much the same as us. You know, if it wasn't for each other, it would have been very hard to kind of navigate the whole thing. Oh yeah, absolutely. And the one thing you will all have also is that, you know, you are the only four people to have ever experienced what you went through. That's what we always say. Well, like, nobody will understand us the way we understand each other. Yeah. Like, nobody. And we can, like, whinge and moan or, like, go through motions with other people that are in our circle.

29:53And obviously they get it, but not to that extent. It's not the same at all. So I'm glad we've got that still. Yeah. You know? Oh, you'll have that forever. Yeah. The relationship with the four of you, the things you've experienced together is unique. And Leanne, a scene that has just signed up for Celebrity Traitors. I know. Wild. I've never seen it. Have you not? Never. I haven't seen, I'd only seen

30:15Declan Donnelly:the last Celebrity Traitors. That was it. I don't watch the civilian one. Did you like it? Yeah. I like the Celebrity one. I tried to watch the civilian one, but I wasn't, wasn't it fine. I just, I can't get into it, but now I'm going to have to. Yeah, you are. Because my hands on it. So I need to watch it now. Is she a good liar? Oh, no. Is that what you have to do? Yes. Oh, she's so annoying. I already know it's going to annoy me. Really? Is that what you have to do? No. Yeah, just, if she's a traitor, and then she has to lie. No, she's annoying like that. She used to do that all the time. That's her thing.

30:44What, lying? Yeah. That's her thing. You don't understand how infuriating it is. She'll lie about silly things or she'll do pranks. And we're like, yeah, and she goes, it's a prank. I'm like, it's not a prank, you just lie. It's just annoying. Do you know what I mean? It's one of them. So I don't know if I've got it in me to watch her do that then for a full series. Well, it depends. If she's a traitor, she just has to lie. If she's a faithful, she has to try and catch the traitors. So it depends. Is she good at spotting liars then? Oh, she'll be useless at that. I know. What's she got on this show?

31:12All right. 20 quid on her to win. Yeah, no. That's worth watching. That's worth watching. I'm going to have to watch it now. Right, I get it now. Okay, I get it. I'm going to watch it then. Go on.

31:21Declan Donnelly:Have you settled into a solo performer? Yeah. Yeah, I think so. Yeah. How is your circle when you travel? Oh, great. I love my circle. I'm very lucky. I've got a very good circle around me and I still have the girls. We still have each other whenever we're going through things or like, is this normal? Should I be doing this? Should I be doing that? And then we kind of like lean on each other that way still. So it's nice. But I'm very lucky. The people around me are incredible. That's good. Yeah. You need good people around you. Oh yeah, you do. Yeah. We're recording this before Mighty Hoopla. Yes.

31:52When this goes out, you will have done Mighty Hoopla. Yeah. Are you excited about it? And how did it go? Oh, it was epic. The vibes were great. It was fun. It's a good one, isn't it, mate? It is, yeah. A good one to do. Yeah, I love it. I just love being on stage. I can't explain it. I'm obsessed with it. Yeah. Before I go out, I feel like I'm going to puke. Do you? But then once I'm on there and I'm like singing and just, oh, I just love it.

32:17Declan Donnelly:There's a lot of love from that crowd as well, isn't there? Yeah. Is there anything else that you want to do that you haven't yet done? Yeah. I'd love to be in like a movie musical vibe. Yeah. Like, you know, like The Greatest Shoreman. Yes. Oh, yeah. That is a piece of me, that. Oh, okay. That is a bit of me.

32:35musicals and movies and even West End things like that I just love it so I think that would be fun

32:41Declan Donnelly:and perform live every night exactly that would be epic there's always time for that how about the old man how's he getting on he's just won the league with Salik I know what a day that was and possibly the cup the atmosphere was epic yeah I bet honestly unbelievable I've never seen anything like it in my life oh everybody even if you're not a Scottish football fan everybody was watching on that day because they wanted to see what happened It's the way they all run onto the pitch. I've never seen anything like that. I'm like, the chaos is insane, but I love it. I love it. I'm glad we were there to be a part of it.

33:15Yeah, I bet. It was so good. And we went partying after. Yeah, I bet. And he likes how old we were and how tired we are. But I'm so proud of him. He's won everything possible to win in football. Amazing. Go on, what's he won? No, like everything. Is there? Any cup, anything. He's won all of them in British football. And now he's in Scotland and he's just won that one.

33:33Declan Donnelly:That's a tattoo and a half, isn't it? Isn't that amazing? Not just the Cups or the outlines of the Cups, just I've won everything there is to win. I've won everything there is to win. In England, that's it. Yeah. Won it all, mate. Yeah, I'm so proud. Football, completed it, mate. Yeah, completed it, mate. Fantastic. So done. Good for him. So buzzing for him. That's brilliant. I know, and I love Glasgow. It's a great city, isn't it? I know, I'd love to stay there a bit longer. Great people. It's the best. I think it's because I just love the Northerners, personally. Yeah. So chatty, so friendly, so approachable.

33:59Love it. Do you always find as well audiences the further north you go? Yes, the more rowdy. Yeah. Yeah, I like that. Yeah, me too.

34:07Declan Donnelly:I know Glasgow used to get quite a bad reputation for being too rowdy. Oh, never too rowdy. But we always liked it. I love it. Yeah, the rowdy are the better. Yeah. Before you go, we spend a lot of time on this podcast talking about misheard lyrics. We've done a little bit of time on this last week, I think it was, two weeks ago? A couple of weeks ago. and it's far more common than you think oh yeah I'm sure you must have you ever had that with any of your stuff little mix of stuff oh all the time shout out to my eggs no way I can't wear that such a popular one yeah shout out to my eggs I mean I get it because it kind of sounds like that yeah but yeah I do it a lot with lyrics as well myself oh I do I'm terrible yeah I'm so bad we have had some suggestions sent in okay love it which you don't know about and you don't know about so I'll happily I'm going to read you the line right and you've got to tell me what you think the actual lyric is and what the song is.

35:01I often think do songwriters get offended by this when you go, you know, you've poured over your lyrics and every word that you've written. I mean, I guess it's your own fault for not enunciating. Yeah, very good point. Do you know what I mean?

35:12Declan Donnelly:Yes. You've got to go yourself to blame. In the booth. Okay, so this one. For you, I peed myself dry. Oh, this is Coldplay. Yes. For you I peed myself dry Yellow by Coldplay Yellow by Coldplay Yeah, this is from So this is from Kitty Who writes in my family I'm known for mishearing Or misnaming lyrics That's what she thought The lyrics to Yellowwood But she'd peed everything out Yeah, well, she said I remember when I was six Asking my dad Why someone would write A song about that He explained how it's about love And wanting to give everything To another person To which I replied Even your wee Oh my God I'm 22 now, and ironically, that misheard pee is still used by me and my family.

35:58I'm going to sing that from now on now. I'm going to. That's going to be my thing. I'll feed myself dry.

36:03Declan Donnelly:Another one here. Hello, it's Bethan Parfit again. Bethan? From the Bethans of the World Unite Movement. This is not a movement. I'm Bethan. No, shut up. This is not a movement. I've got some good misheard lyrics. Okay. Please try and guess. I used to sing, oh, your socks are on fire. Oh. Your socks is on fire. That's it. Yeah, absolutely. No disrespect, but I'd much rather hear her sing it. Sorry, Dex. She has got a much better voice than you. Yeah, that's a good one, actually. Kings of Leon. Kings of Leon, yeah. Your socks are on fire. Yeah, socks are on fire. That's good. It's an innocent one.

36:38I was only 11, better than six.

36:41Declan Donnelly:Oh, there you go. And my mum never corrected me because she didn't want to tell me what sex was. Understandably so. Fair enough. Understandably so. Can I tell you a story about that song? I was at a friend's birthday party and there was some other famous people there and it was a karaoke. And my then six-year-old girl, Ayla, got one of the microphones and the next person to come up to sing was Peter Crouch. And he sang that alongside my then six-year-old girl, stood next to him, stood next to him. And he's singing, oh, you're sexy, I'm fine. And I go, this is really weird. oh no and was she singing socks because she didn't understand she was just going no and I was going Isla come here come here she's like no I'm not getting down oh that's so funny Peter Crouch was very weirded out singing alongside Isla yeah I'm not surprised that is jokes I remember being told in the Kings of Leon I was I went back to they were in the days where we used to do SMTV Live Saturday mornings back to Kat Dealey's house on a Saturday after the show you weren't there you'd gone back to Newcastle for the weekend and I was like I don't know if I'm going to stay here much longer.

37:48Declan Donnelly:Everyone was kind of getting tired and people were kind of leaving and all that. And then the doorbell went and she went, would you get that? And I answered the door and it was the four scruffiest looking blokes you've ever seen. And I was like, if this is the calibre of people coming in now, I'm leaving. So I left, got in the taxi and she was like, you didn't stay when the Kings of Leon came? Was that the Kings of Leon? Oh my gosh. I know, what a shame. That is hilarious. That's like an episode of Chums. Ding dong, it's the Kings of Leon. It's beyond proper being too judgy when they turn up on the door Yeah, that'll teach you It is really Hi guys Hi At seven years old and aspiring to be a pop star which sadly didn't work out I thought I would rehearse a song and proudly perform it to my family Oh no It's all I read It's just good already The lyrics that she sang Right were I saw an angel called Adam Shaw Oh I saw an angel called Adam Shaw that's Blunty James Blunt you're beautiful you're beautiful yes I saw an angel called Adam Shaw that was a good one he's marred me on the subway but he was with another man oh it makes sense it does make sense Adam Shaw was with another man Adam Shaw was with no wonder you'd be annoyed that was from Chloe from Southport oh that's really cute that's a good one do you want another one?

39:09yeah go on then I like this

39:11Declan Donnelly:this is from Louisa Bird in Mount Sorrow in Leicestershire Alan Partridge in a bad dream. Alan Partridge in a bad dream. Yes! What, the 12 Days of Christmas? Yes! No. Yeah. That's so funny. I feel like I'm quite good at this game. Yeah, you're very good at this game. I know, that was good. Your parents have to be big Alan Partridge fans for you to miss you the lyrics to the 12 Days of Christmas, right? Yes. That's really funny. Alan Partridge in a bad dream. Yeah. Oh, this one. You'll never get this one. I'll go on then. Okay. So this is from Lindsay in Teesside. Middlesbrough fan, don't hold it against her.

39:46Declan Donnelly:Oh, right. Come on. Her nana used to sing this. The lyrics are, you're the wobbly dog. You are the wobbly dog. Okay, you've thrown me with that one. Is it you're the wobbly dog or you are the wobbly dog? You are the wobbly dog. You're the wobbly dog. You are the wobbly dog. So I know it's slightly different. Oh. You're the wobbly dog. You are the wobbly dog. I know what this is. Is it? Ooh, ooh, ooh. Honey, the wobbly dog. You are the wobbly dog.

40:19Declan Donnelly:You're the one that I want from Greece. It's the title of the song? Yeah. You're the wobbly dog. You are the wobbly dog. Ooh, ooh, ooh, honey. Oh, that's really cute. But it's literally the name of the song. Stick on the one that I want. You're the one that I want. Yeah. It's called the one that I want. Oh, it's the song from Greece. I would know that. Yeah, that's true, actually. It's the song from Greece. I've got one last one. Go on then, I love it. This is from Helen in Basildon, my favourite misheard lyric at the moment. I popped out my tit. I'm never going to get that. I popped out my tit.

40:56Were you just... I popped out my tit. I popped out my tit. I'm trying not to give it away, yeah. I popped out my tit. I popped out my tit. I popped out my tit. I popped out my tit. I don't know what that is. I popped out my tip. I popped out my tip. I popped out my tip. I popped out my tip. That is the best one. That's the best one. You win.

41:22Declan Donnelly:She wins. Helen in Basel, then you win. That's the best one. Thank you for popping out your tip. Well done, Helen. Now put it away. I popped out my tip. Oh no, I'm never going to sing these songs the normal way ever again. Ever. That's so good. My favourite, yeah, my favourite is popped out my tip. And then Wobbly Dog. Wobbly Dog. Wobbly Dog. thank you for coming in thank you for having me it's such a treat thank you yeah I knew you'd like it it's very good yeah more for more Geordies on the show yeah all for more Geordies before you go would you like to take a biscuit I've been eyeing them up like the whole time well okay I love biscuits even if you don't take one what would be your number one is that a chocolate hop knob yes it is chocolate hop knob or a chocolate digestive no no she said chocolate hop knob that was one of mine the digestive doesn't do it for me hob knob The Hobnob 100%.

42:12Hobnob. And the cookies. It's yours. Dunker Bowl biscuits, they are. Yeah, they are. Dunk and biscuit. Yeah, they are. The tea is just a vessel for the biscuit. I agree.

42:22Declan Donnelly:Do you know what I mean? Yeah, it is. See? And you've got a dunk. Love it. Thanks. I mean, you don't have to. I mean, nobody's fingering them, but it's fine. No, I'd love a Hobnob, actually. Thank you so much. You're welcome. Thank you for coming. Thank you. Do take with our compliments a chocolate Hobnob. Big round of applause for Perry. Thank you, Perry. Well done, Anne. Thank you. Perry, the perfect guest. Lovely, isn't she? Really lovely. And we've met her a few times over the years, but she is just a very humble, lovely girl who is very talented. Great voice. The single's really good, you know.

42:56The single's great. Passenger Princess, Out Now. Out Now. It's really good. Yeah, it's really good. Big jangly guitars. I like it. Big bass line. I love it. It's really good. We took a little picture before she left. Yeah, we did take a picture. I took a little selfie.

43:10Declan Donnelly:You're the only one in focus. I took a little selfie of us. Derek took the selfie. He's the only one in focus. It gets worse as it goes on. At least you can kind of tell it's her. You don't even know it's me. It was all blurry to me. I didn't have my glasses on. We can unblur it and post it on our socials. No, I think we should leave it as a good. No, we shouldn't. You can't get a guest like Perry Edwards and do her dirty like that. We won't get any more guests, Jordies or not.
