14Hook, hook, hook, hook, slash, slash. It's like Morse code, but for angry fishermen who are hellbent on exacting revenge on teenagers. Oh my God. It's a niche focus group, but they're out there. I love it. Yeah. Oh, they're out there. They're out there. There are at least four of those guys. Be safe. They are out there. Prepare your ears, humans. Happy, sad, confused begins now. Hey, guys. It's Josh. Welcome to another edition of Happy, Sad, Confused. Today's main event, we have a first-time guest on the podcast, very popular young actress. I'm so thrilled to welcome you to the show for the first time.
55It's Madeline Klein. If you have an Outer Banks fan in your life, if you're an Outer Banks fan, if you're OBX obsessive, what's the term? I don't know. If you're an Outer Banks person, this one is for you. But also if you just love to kind of track entertaining, fun, charismatic, cool young stars, you're going to dig this. Madeline is a live wire, a fun, fun conversation. So thrilled to have her. Her new movie is I Know What You Did Last Summer. It opens next week in theaters. That is the main event on Happy Say I Confused today. Briefly, I'll mention, as always, if you want early access to this and all our episodes, if you want bonus materials, you know what to do by now.
37Patreon.com slash happy say I confused is your friend for all things Josh Horowitz. As I said, early access, discount codes, heads up on live events. We do a ton of live events. So check out what we do over there. It helps us do more over here. Patreon.com slash happy, sad, confused. All right. Some brief context for this conversation with Madeline. Madeline swung into New York for like literally a day. And I'm so thrilled. She did make some time for me and my little old show. I've done a few things with Madeline, especially around Glass Onion. If you remember, she was so great in that film. And kudos to Madeline for like, you know, not only getting that plum role in Rian Johnson's Knives Out sequel, but more than holding her own against the likes of Daniel Craig, Janelle Monae, Catherine Han, Edward Norton.
27I mean, the list goes Dave Bautista. The list goes on and on and on. And she was so fantastic in that. And she really registered for me in that film. And then I know, I know the OBX fans out there. I know you're out there. I know you love Madeline and I get it. She is so fun. She is a ball of energy. she is yeah it was it was a kind of a wild weird random conversation but i love those i loved riding the wave with madeline klein i feel like she made me feel 20 years younger or older i'm not sure i definitely felt old but i also felt like okay this is my cheat code for what a 27 year old young woman feels and talks about nowadays so if you're not 27 and female perhaps this will give you a clue as to the mindset of a 27 year old young woman nowadays in terms of pop culture references and just the way they speak, et cetera.
18God, do I sound old right now talking? I do. I'm going to stop talking. Okay. So Madeline Klein, main guest on Happy, Sad Confused. Of course, she is the star of Outer Banks. She is also the star of I Know What You Did Last Summer. Yes, it is the sequel. It's weird that it has the same name. I'm going to say it just like scream. Why do you call it the same thing? I don't know. Take it up with someone else, not me. Anyway, I Know What You Did Last Summer opens next week in theaters. It is Madeline. It's Chase Sweet Wonder, who I also adore. And then it has some of the legacy actors from the original, including Freddie Prinze Jr.
53And not Sarah Michelle Gellar because she died in the first one. But oh, of course, Jennifer Love Hewitt. Amazing. So a nice thing for those of us that grew in the 90s. So old. Okay, enjoy this conversation. It's a wild one. Me and Madeline Klein. Madeline, it's official. You're on the podcast. We're on the pod officially. Thank you for doing this. Thank you. You're in the middle of a lot of things. You've got the whole OBX thing is back. The vote show is back. The vote show is back. Oh, yeah. And you're sneaking away for basically 24 hours of press, if that. Pretty much. You snuck me in. I appreciate you.
31Of course. You snuck me in. You know what else I snuck in? Fashion icon, Madeline Klein. What are you selling here? What are you trying to give off? What's the vibe?
45Maybe shrooms. I'm like a secret shroom dealer. Secret shroom dealer. That's, yeah, okay, good, good. She's a woman of many talents. Yeah, like, where am I going? Probably Thai Village for dinner. Okay. And then probably just, you know, doing some drop-offs afterwards. Okay. And then I have a gala. You have a gala. Yeah. That's how you roll. That's what my outfit. Oh, you should have told me it was for the podcast. Oh, okay. You were happy, sad, confused. You were like, get out the ball gowns, get out high fashion. Yes, it is giving happy, sad, confused all these different elements happening here.
23That's the confused. It's like, wait, what? Yes. And then the nail polish sad. What's the tattoo? Oh, it is no I got it last summer And it's the cure lyrics Or lyrics to a song I don't want to like I want people to figure it out. Okay. Okay. Yeah, like maybe if there's one day on my wiki feet There's a high-res picture That ends up maybe then no do you maintain your own wiki feet? Or do you let someone else is that like an open source? How does that work? Yeah, that's an open source because I think that's probably the most unbiased. Right, you want the truth. You don't want to skew your own vision of your feet.
00No, no, no. I did not expect the podcast to start that way. Let's get the important stuff out of the way. You are spreading a good word on I Know What You Did Last Summer. Yes, yes. Which I haven't had an opportunity to see yet. They haven't shown it to me, so I can only assume it's the best movie ever made. I've seen the first 45 minutes. Okay. And I can say that it is the best movie ever made. Knife, knife, hook, hook. Is that all the script is? Just this knife, knife, hook, hook? Slashy stab. That's the direction on it. More slashy stab on this one, Madeline. Yes, especially with like this.
39Yes, it is the slashy stabby ever. Wow. Congrats on that. Thanks. Um, so, you know, I'm 95 years old. So my relationship to the original, yeah, 95. Wish me a happy birthday, please. Are they saying it? Wait, who did, who did you? Yeah, it was Oil of Alay. I'm already planning my first. All the skin creams. What was I going to say? Oh, so I have a deep relationship to that first film. I was a sentient human being. I was very much the right age. You were not alive. I hate you. Wait, no, I, oh no, I was only, my mom was about five months away. You were getting there. You were almost there. Almost there.
14So relationship to the original, does every kid nowadays still see, I know what you did last summer? I think it's one of those, I mean, it is like a cultural zeitgeist. It's crazy. And it is a classic, even if I think people haven't seen it. I think they know of it. Yeah. Like you say, the slashy slashy hook hook fisherman. Everyone knows that. And, and, I know what you did last summer walked, so scream good run. some words like my originals. And what about, look, we have Jennifer Love Hewitt back here. We have Freddie. Freddie Prinze. Freddie Prinze, Jr. We have Sarah Michelle in proximity, at least.
57She paid a visit. Yes, the whole family. Yeah, I know. So, I mean, Sarah Michelle means a lot to every young person. She means a lot to me. Right? Oh, my God. So one of the first times I met her, because they just brought the whole family down. It was an Australian vacation. I thought I'd turn that off. You're good. They brought the whole family down for an Australia vacation. And we were, I think I can say this. You can. So my character, Danica, has, I've decided to build into her lore that she's really, really insecure about her shoulders. Okay. And Lisa Renna is her idol because Lisa Renna has a quote that says, I love my shoulders.
47I love the way my shoulders look in this top. And I feel like that's one of Danica's affirmations. Yep. She's like, I'm safe from Benson Boone. My shoulders look incredible. You know what I mean? And my branches are always emerging. And so I was telling Freddie and Sarah about this because the whole conversation had happened the night before. And Sarah got me a cameo from Lisa Rinna, but not from the app. Like an actual... It's the most incredible movie ever. It's so... It's pretty long. Yeah, on the cameo app, that probably would have been thousands of dollars. You got it, yeah. Oh, my God. I really, I hit the lottery.
29What'd you say? Can you tease a little bit? Should I find it? Yeah. Okay. We'll do it after. Yeah. Let's go with it. But I'll, yes, I will show. I think she'll be okay with it. Yeah. Yeah. If I know Lisa, I think she'll be fine. She's the best. She's so fucking hot. Sorry. So, on the Sarah front, were you a Buffy girl? I mean, did you grow up with Buffy the Vampire Slayer? You know, I, no, I didn't. I haven't watched it. That's okay. No. I wasn't, I think I was a little too scared. Yeah. I was an office girl. You were an office girl. This is your first horror, though, right? Technically, like, full-on horror.
04Yeah. Full-on. Yeah, yeah. Yes. That's a rite of passage for any young actor. I think so. Right? But especially one like this. Yeah, if you're going to do it. If you're going to do it. Do it right. Slashy stuff. Slashy hook, hook. Hook, hook, knife, knife. Have you been up for, like, horror things before? Does every young actor go up for the Scream movies nowadays? like I hadn't been up for scream no but there's been like there's been a few more indie horror yeah which also great because a lot of times I feel like they're it there those the more indie films are a little bit more it's about a conversation and like a deeper conversation yeah yeah it's already after crazy stuff like super yeah yeah yeah but also really hard to be in that kind of like headspace every day on set oh yeah um it's a choice but this was like I think I was like okay well if we're gonna do it this is a great one so saying like this you can you can have fun with it like you can commit to it you can do the Lisa Rinna backstory yes but you can also like detach you don't have to live this life right when you go home right um and I would love to do something like that yeah super deep but that is prep yeah so what are the skills that you already had you think that like equipped you for this and what skills didn't you have like you've done the physical stuff obviously but this is a different kind of thing I would imagine or you tell me like what what didn't you have going into this what did you have going into this um what I did have going into this was um um beta blockers and and uh the time of my life like it was just so fun It was really, truly fun.
51I enjoyed every second of it. I mean, Danica's also, she is, she's camp, which is just like, I mean, it's just fun. Like, I don't know, I'm having the time of my life. Yeah. Like, we're literally getting chased around, but Danica's like. She's in her own movie. No, no, no, Danica believes that she is, her life is a movie. Oh, I love it. Yes, she is the main character. Amazing. Yes. And this also feels, I don't know like how you're selecting your parts or not, but it feels like sometimes you're selecting them based on like, I want to go on an adventure somewhere. Yes. Oh, totally. Because everything shoots in Europe and Australia.
31You're traveling so, like you're doing it. You're having some great adventures. It seems so much fun. So this was Australia. And again, probably a bunch of new friends, I would imagine, obviously in your age group. So like a whole bunch of new people. And it feels like you're just at the other end of the earth doing your own thing yeah I think it was we had some really really special fun nights all together I mean it was a very quick filming schedule we had about six weeks right in Australia which is fast yeah to get everything done and by golly we did it harsh language okay yeah bleep that out that would be really funny Bye.
19And yes, it was really fun. We went to some beautiful beaches for our early wrap slash my birthday party. We went and we got a huge suite at the Crown Hotel and we just had a night ever. Santa was there. Santa was there. Santa was there. The Santa. I do think like we we couldn't if we paid him enough I do think he would have started stripping oh my god this is the official Santa you think with enough money you're saying the real Santa would actually strip I think he was I think that was actually Santa wow I believe in you I believe in your magic I know I think so I I don't not believe in the magic yeah but also it was funny because gab gabriette saw him first
12and she immediately like she's like oh my god take my phone and she's he's passing out candy canes as santa does and she's and has like a silver metallic bikini she puts her hair over and she's like immediately starts going into a full-blown photo shoot yeah sexy santa shoot i've never seen anything like it how did santa handle the he loved it yeah of course he did knowing Santa. Yeah, and he gave him as a candy cane. I'm not going to comment on that. I'm going to move on.
43As mentioned, you just literally started Outer Banks the final season. Like, you're like, day one was, yeah, a couple days ago. Yeah, yeah, day one, yeah, Monday. So how, I mean, it's premature to say how does it feel, but, like, how does it feel? Like, are you, is it hitting all of you yet? I think, yes, it's hitting all of us. but it's so funny because we've been in the thick of it for six or seven years and there has been time, I mean it's not it kicks our asses, it's a tough show to shoot, it's very physically demanding, but I always come back and I'm like oh fuck I forgot how much stamina you need to have to keep up with this show and the elements that we shoot in but it's so funny because sometimes we go back and we're like yeah I'm tired yeah and this season I think because we realize it's our last time you're trying to enjoy it you know now it's like oh my god our very first day back it was our last birthday right Right, everything's going to be the last.
54Everything's the last. I think that's what's hitting everyone. So everyone has this really, really incredible attitude of gratitude. It is like Sesame Street. Or, no, sorry, Mr. Rogers. Yes, an attitude of gratitude. I like that. Yes. So have you read all the scripts yet? No. No, you never get them all at once, right? What do you know? How much do you know about the do you know how this all ends up we have five scripts? Okay, so we were chasing I was shooting our first scene back and I was like He was giving me spark notes He was giving me like the bullet points I was like, okay, got it, got it, okay.
44And actually, and go. And then I guess it worked. It was kind of like, it reminded me of the cue cards or like having a thing in your ear. And I got a great compliment that day from her director. I was like, hmm. Well, the people that can't see it, but you have a little IFB in your ear right now that's feeding you every answer to this podcast. This is all scripted. I'm actually a clone. This is AI Madeline. Sarah's still pregnant, JJ's still dead, these things are still canon. Yes, all still canon. It's funny because people were asking me if the baby is dead or is still alive, and I was like, no.
29And then Netflix was like, no spoilers. I was like, what do you think? That's not a spoiler. but it's also really funny because I met I actually I was here a couple weeks ago and I met a little boy who was a big fan of the show he's like he but he thought I was pregnant in real life sure and um he like what happened I don't know but it was basically he basically was like wait why aren't you fat oh god I was like I got it don't worry about it just yeah how do you even respond to that that's tough I know I was like enjoy the show what did you like to know wait it turned it turned mean by the way there is no Santa yeah hi hi in the face I met Santa and I'm gonna tell him about you yeah you're naughty you're on the naughty list you're the worst knife knife the ulterior motive of course look I wanted to have you on the podcast for a while but I do have two nieces of that age really oh yeah Sadie and Sienna a sweet Horowitz are very very excited about this thank you for giving me some some brownie points what do I mean the intensity of the fandom look I've talked to a lot of actors over the years with certain kinds of fandom And this is one of those.
53Yes, it is. This is one of those. Yes. I mean, can you give me a sense of sort of like, what are the intense fan interactions you do get? Are there typical reactions? Does it ever get too much? Like, what's the... I think there's a very typical reaction when someone is, you know, does recognize or sees me is like, it's a scream or a squeal or a screech. Right. Or a gas. and like you know it's like today I was I've been running late all day but I was in these my fabulous yep slides and then my sleep shorts and a giant t-shirt with Jesse Joe on the back my eye patches hair not brushed and still hadn't showered everything I was in a mess yeah and and then it was one of those moments where I was like, please, please, please.
48Right, right, right. And it can get intense. I think sometimes when it comes to privacy or anonymity, especially where I live or where I'm going, where I'm traveling to or hotels or even bathrooms, I'm like, no. Yeah, there are limits. There are boundaries. I go pee pee now. And usually two over there. Right. Yeah, so that's when it gets a little intense. Yeah, I would imagine that. And there's no way to teach you that. That's just something you kind of learn as you go. Yeah, and some people are just like, some people are better at it than others, which is fine. I mean, it's like, yeah, I don't know how to describe it.
35And people are like, how do you deal with it? Do you ever have the experience of hearing people talk about the show or you and not realizing you're there? like like not recognizing you like they're watching it on a plane or whatever that happens yeah I've had that I think it was season two or something or season three I can't remember but there were multiple people watching it on a plane and I'm sure even like also glass onion too that was probably on every plane first period of time that was really cool yeah yeah I think it actually still was on my flight back from Europe yeah yeah it's very cool It's a good one to rewatch.
13I was so fit. I was in such good shape. You're a mess now. I really have. I've let myself go. You know, I did have a conversation. I doubt you saw this, but I did have a conversation the other day with Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans. Oh, yes. Oh, my God. That was in the group chat. We sent that to the Poops group chat. It's so funny. She's funny. I love her. I'm obsessed with her. As you should be. Let me play it again for you to react. Just tell me. This is my favorite thing. Could a pogue and a kook really fall in love? Josh, what the are you talking about? What are these words? What's happening?
52You love Outer Banks. That's your favorite show next to - It's my favorite show. The Summer I Turned Pretty and then Outer Banks. Yes, starring Louisa and Jacob Tremblay. And - And, like, I don't know if you're joking or if you're being hilarious. Dominic Cooper. Dominic Cooper. Oh, I love Dominic Cooper. He's not on the show for the record. He's not. Who else is on Outer Banks? Man, well, shout out to Dom Cooper. So what was it like when you saw that they had no idea what... I wasn't surprised. Yeah. I'm never surprised when people are like, I haven't watched it. I'm like, I haven't either. Yeah, it would be obnoxious to just assume everybody knows.
32Yeah, totally. But, yes, that's the right attitude. Yeah, but I thought it was so funny. and Madison sent it in the group chat. She was like, oh, buddy, we're fucked. I was like, we're cooked. Absolutely cooked. Yeah, I saw Chase commented on the MTV post with a whelp. I'm like, oh.
03How satisfying is it when you land that one or two pieces in your closet that you know you can just go to over and over again? That's what quince does for me. I've got jackets and pants and sweaters that are also functional and stylish and they honestly get use more than 90 % of the rest of my wardrobe. That's what Quince does so well. They make getting dressed easy, even for me, an idiot like me, guys. Quince focuses on high-quality wardrobe staples made with premium materials like cashmere, organic cotton, merino wool. We're talking styles that are timeless and versatile, designed for your every day.
37And their prices cannot be beat. I'm talking about 100 % Mongolian cashmere sweaters that start at just$60. You get the softness and quality you'd expect from a luxury brand, without the luxury price tag. And they make everything. Premium pants, fitted tees, polos, quality basics designed to work across your wardrobe and hold up to everyday wear. 25:52Anxiety has come and gone for me. It's probably done the same thing for you. With Rula, I know I could have coped with all of it a whole lot better. It's so great that Rula is now available because now you can find a great therapist online and one that actually takes your insurance. because affordable and accessible mental health care should not be out of reach, and sadly, too often it is. But finding one that actually takes your insurance, that's a double whammy.

50Okay, it's going to be a long shoot this last season. So you're going to have time to process all of this. Yes. But talk to me a little bit about the choices you're starting to make. You've been making the last couple of years and taking the best opportunities when you've had time. Yeah. Like, are you already like you won't have the security blanket of Outer Banks? That's the scariest part I would imagine. Yes, that is to me, I think the one mindfuck of it all. It's like because it's been it's been a better part of my 20s. Yeah. And it's always it is a security blanket that I always go back to.
Read the full transcript
25And I always know that is always going to be there and is in a way like feels like having your training wheels taken off. So I think that is, I think for me, that's the one thing that's like really kind of messing with my head. And we, we have a very long shoot coming up. So there's going to be plenty of time, plenty of time for crash outs. I had a crash out yesterday. Just like emotionally, You know what I mean? Yeah. Because I was hungry. It's a lot of pressure. It's a lot. It's a lot of pressure to be hungry. I feel it every day. Hungry Josh is not a happy Josh. No, not at all. I mean, I'm thinking about the sushi out there now.
12We were talking. That's our happy place. It's the happy place when the food has arrived, anticipation of the food. It's just thinking about food. That's my life. It's always like, what's the next meal? The happy place is that period of time between your Dasher or your Postmate is there. Right. And the first couple bites. Right, before you overindulge. And then it's like, because I shovel food into it. Like, I'm very, very excited. I'm always very excited. That's the first time. Yes. But I order everything, too. I'm like, I went this, I went this, I went this. And I eat like three bites each. Right.
54Where are you on food trends? Do you like go after like it's like, all right, everyone's doing the Dubai chocolate now. I got to try the Dubai chocolate. Like where are you at? I have tried a couple of trendy things. I tried the Final Boss sour things. Okay. I don't know if you've seen that. It's on TikTok. Basically, it's dried fruit that's covered in like a sour. Okay. Not for me. Okay. Dubai chocolate, haven't tried because I'm not really a sweet. I'm not a chocolate person. Okay. I like sour, and I like salty and spicy. Okay. So like chamoy pickle. Oh. Delicious. Big fan of that trend. Is there any food, what are your food no's?
33Like what's your, what are your no goes? Hard pass. I don't really like, I don't really love pork. Okay. Not a bacon, not a, not a, not a. No, but I love ribs. Interesting. That's barbecue. Yes. You know what I mean? Yeah. My other nose, anything really just like sweet. Right. It's not a sweet tooth. No. As you said, spicy, sour, savory. Okay. Yeah. But my, yeah. What's in?
13Yes. Okay. We're all over the place, but that's okay. That's how my brain works too. Yeah. What's also been cool is not only the opportunities you've had, like making the most of Glass Onion, et cetera, all these great things off of Outer Banks, but, like, your co-stars too. Oh, yeah. Oh, that's what we were talking about. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, okay. No, all good. Yeah, the career outside of Outer Banks. So, like, when you see, like, Drew, like, have that opportunity with Daniel, who's apparently just running through the Outer Banks cast. I know. We're so run through by Daniel Craig. He's a secret OBX obsessive.
48He pretends like he doesn't know, but he knows. He's really funny. He's like, yes, Drew also said so funny story about Daniel is he hates jazz. Like loathes jazz. Who hates jazz? Daniel Craig. Okay, good to know. He's so triggered by it. Did you know this, or this is from Drew? No, I know this. Okay. And then Drew and I were actually talking about our experiences with him, And he's, you know, but Daniel always has his little, little earbuds in. Yep. And I was like, Drew, what does he listen to? Because I never asked. He's like, Kesha. Or like something, you know, like that. Okay. I think it was Kesha, though.
31Okay. I think that's what Drew said. Interesting. Yeah. It's just, he's such a, he's so silly and fun and nice. But, yeah. He intimidated the hell out of me for years. And then, like, I started, I did some stuff around. It's his eyes. It's everything. Also, his physicality. He's a big bruising kind of guy. But yeah, I did some things around Glass Onion, and I did longer form stuff with him. And I feel like I'm like, OK, now I kind of get a beat on you. He has crazy aura for sure. Yeah. But just like very nice, wants to do the crossword every day. So who in that cast was most least intimidating?
05Like who did you like feel that you bodged with, that you were like, I don't know. Give me a sense. I was pretty intimidated by that entire cast. I don't know if there was one who was most or least intimidating. Probably what I do remember feeling like the most starstruck was when I had a rehearsal with Edward Norton and Daniel. Yeah. Or no, sorry, I had a rehearsal with Ryan, and then theirs was after. so they both walked in and I was like... Yeah. Edward's intense. He's a smart dude. Sprinkle, sprinkle. Yeah. Uh-oh. Yeah. Like, no thoughts. Yeah. I, like, practically ran out. I just didn't...
54Right. I was so scared. Catherine... She's a beam of voice. ...was just so, like... Oh, I love her. I know. I wouldn't do anything for her. Yeah. She's also worked with Chase Sweet and Sarah Pidgeon. So all three of us have worked together. I know. So she's running through the annual. She's competing with Daniel. Yeah, yeah. You shot Day Drinker? Talk about some more icons you're knocking off the list. That was another thing. I was like my very first day on set. I'm a bartender. And they had me in bartending training. I was like, I've got this. You know, to invite me. and my first day on set is like me bartending and like with Johnny and I take the cup up and it was like on a plate I was like yeah character trait that I shake a lot yes but very intimidating yeah so for the record this is Johnny Depp and Elby Cruz also it's also incredible unbelievable yes um how many scarves was he wearing or I guess he's in character he's not wearing all the scarves from of course he does yes contractual he likes he likes his scarves um but does that go away that intimidation that was that went away fairly quickly and I also think it was truly the start of my character's like real arc like those were the like those scenes that we did is kind of her backbone yeah um so you get to kind of mirror her her arc a little bit you're saying like she kind of like gets more comfortable or in that world well in a way i think that could have which is why i had to lean into it because i wanted it to inform yeah because it can but um i was it was just really important to me that i get it right you know what i mean very very important but yes do you find you're like having to chase like good material or are you like is it is it competitive out there to like find in your age group i think so yeah yeah it's competitive for sure and I think one of my acting teachers a long time ago was always said that what ever projects come to you are the ones that you have to learn lessons from right which I think is just life yeah in general but it's a nice way to think about it yeah and it's interesting because every project I've had, I have learned something or taken something away personally from it.
28So I have informed character. Character has informed me, which I think is kind of nice just to let go and let those lessons and emotions develop. So what are the lessons about another film, which I got a chance to see. It's coming out, I think, late summer. Oh, yes. The new Lassie Hallstrom film, You and K.J. Appa. It's the map that leads to you. Yes. Very sweet. It's kind of definitely like that before sunrise. That's exactly, yes, that was the reference. Right. So what do you take away from that besides, again, getting to travel through Europe and see amazing places with cool people? Right, right.
05I mean, that's a good point. Besides that lesson, a little bit. I think the main lesson with that one is love is so important. Yeah. Like, it is, I don't know, like, just love in general. And telling people that you love them is so important. And allowing yourself to love, because I feel like sometimes we're so afraid of emoting or being too vulnerable. But it's also, it's so important. Yeah, you have to expose yourself if you're going to, you have to open yourself up. You have to. Yeah, that's the lesson. I think that was the takeaway. Like you have to open up talking about opening up without spoiling anything You do sing a little bit in that film There's some guitar What was it was it that mortifying that's what's going on?
01Yeah, yeah, how'd that feel was that is that like is there nothing feels more exposing maybe outside of a sex scene then like Hush, hush. Maybe that was Paul Abdul. Is it? No, trust. Trust? You just want to Paul Abdul. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Kiana's in the video, I think. I clearly am a singer. Clearly. Clearly. Yeah. Yes, and Marty said, Madeline, have you, Marty Bowen, our producer, was like, Madeline, do you sing? Do you play guitar? I was like, yes, I have taken lessons in both. And so he took that as a yes, like that I, because it's not there's like one thing I can you know I know G I know C you're ahead of me I know D I know what a fret is I don't know what that is but he so I knew there's that and then there's actually playing one which by the way Sorry, okay, which by the way KJ is you know KJ has a band?
10I think I knew that but he like picked up the guitar and he's like, Jerk. I know, I know. I asked Marty, I was like, can we please take it out? I'm really embarrassed. I don't want to sing. He can like, he played the guitar and can I sing? Because singing and playing guitar is really really hard. Yeah, especially just on set like again exposing yourself to strangers, not strangers but

19Who is doing it right in your age group? Like, who's the actor, young actor, male or female, you think that's, like, you know, everyone can say Leo, but that's obviously, like, the next generation, the previous generation. But, like, who in, like, the 20s right now do you admire kind of, like, what they're showing off, their range, their choices? Honestly, God, I think there's so many. I'm, like, so impressed by, I'm so impressed by, like, one of my close friends, Lucas Gage. Yeah. I'm so impressed by him and his attitude towards acting and writing. He's an incredible writer. And he's just so incredibly smart.
00I think Sidney is also incredibly smart and very, very intelligent businesswoman. And also, I think she's very impressive. Yeah. I think people underestimate Sidney a lot at their peril. It's like her superpower. She lets it happen, which also, that's one of the best things ever. It's one of my favorite feelings, it's being underestimated and proving someone wrong. I think Sophie Thatcher is really impressive. And a huge center file. Adore her. I'm trying to think. I mean, Drew, obviously. Anya, I think. I mean, of course, like Jenna. And the list goes on. I think the whole group was really impressive.
51Kind of experiences, kind of filmmaker that you, on the other side of Outer Banks, that you're looking for right now? What's on your mind in terms of bucket lists? God, I'm really... Day Drinker was quite heady and heavy. Yeah. So I, you know, and obviously Outer Banks, you come back, and I felt like I could finally exhale. Yep. Because it's very easy. It's like, you know, getting on your bike with your training wheels that are about to fall off. And so I think after this, I really, I like, I want to do comedy. I want to, I think the art of the rom-com has been lost a little bit. Yeah. And I have so many ideas.
39And I really want to do, I love, oh my God, Rachel Sennett. Of course. Yeah, I'm excited about her new show, right? She has a new HBO show. I think she's doing it right. I know. And I really want to do, like, I love, like, Thelma and Louise type. Two unhinged bitches go on an adventure. Honestly, by the way, a good name for a movie. Just unhinged bitches. Yes, two unhinged. Coming 2026. Honestly, untitled unhinged bitches project. Yeah. Period. Who's your co-star? I don't know. I'm still thinking about that. Okay. I kind of want to put KJ in a wig. Does KJ know about this? Is he okay? He knows about Fifi.
23That's his alter ego? Yes, Fifi. Obviously, yeah. And I really think that it would be incredible. Me, I like, Cece and Fifi, big road trip adventure. That's the official name. Maybe. It's a little long on a poster, but. I kind of want it to just, I want the title to just run off. and so you don't know what the rest of it says. Right, right, right. Well, there's still time to change the name from I Know What You Did Last Summer to Slash Slash or what is it? Hook, hook, hook, hook, hook, hook, hook, hook, hook, hook, hook, hook, hook, hook, hook. It's like Morse code but for angry fishermen who are hellbent on exacting revenge on teenagers.
10Oh, my God. It's a niche focus group, but they're out there. I love it. Yeah. Oh, they're out there. They're out there. There are at least four of those guys. Be safe. They are out there. I'm going to let you go soon, I promise. But is the ABBA obsession overstated or is it accurate? It is accurate. It is accurate. I'm obsessed with them. So you would like a Mamma Mia film or like a Taylor Swift video, what would you? Mamma Mia. I actually watched it on the plane. Did you? Yes. Original or? Original, yes. Oh, yes. I love them. It makes me cry. The same way that like How to Train Your Dragon makes me cry every single time.
47Did you see the new one yet? No, not yet. That's my plan for tomorrow or something when I get back to South Carolina. Do you like to cry watching movies sometimes? It's like, no. Cathartic. Yeah. No, I don't. But if something really gets me, which How to Train Your Dragon does, or Mamma Mia. Right. Oh, I'm sobbing. That's me with OBX. Really? Not Dakota Johnson. We should have a watch party. Let's expose Dakota to OBX from the start. Yes, exposure and limes. I'm going to end with this. The happy second fews, profoundly random questions. You ready? Yes, ready. We're doing it. Dogs or cats? Dogs.
26Correct. You were your dog mom, right? Yes, and I'm allergic to cats. So just by, yeah. I'm with you. What do you collect, if anything? What do I collect?
40Like on purpose? Either way. You can take it out of your way. On purpose? Dirty clothes? Probably like storage units and suitcases. You're a hoarder. You're a little bit. Oh, I am a hoarder, actually. My best friend will say that. Yeah. Yeah. Do you have a favorite video game of all time? Of all time, I... One you've sunk the most time into maybe? The one that I've sunk the most time into is Returnal. Okay, great game. It's a first-person shooter like rogue style. Okay, it's very cool. Okay Actually, this is the Dakota Johnson Memorial question. She asked me this once Would you rather have a mouthful of bees or one bee in your butt?
19One bee in my butt. Yeah, I think that's the correct I mean, I think it's the correct answer. I think it's the correct answer Because also like if you've ever gotten waxed, you know, it doesn't really hurt, right? So I think I think that it's pretty safe. Okay. I'll take your word for it. What's the wallpaper? Next time. Next podcast. Yes, yes, yes. What's the wallpaper on your phone? It's a bunch of pictures. It's the little slideshow.
48But I think the last one. Is that Lisa Rinna? Should we get it? Oh, my God. Should we? Oh, wait. I do have to show you. Why don't we grab it? Yeah, if you don't mind. We'll grab it. This is my friends. we were all in Disney Channel or Disney Channel we were in Disney Channel for Odessa's birthday and we there were shirts that we had that we were wearing around Disney World that said stop being not my birthday love it and we were calling it Odessa's Dwap Disney World Adventure Party this is from Italy beautiful film photo that I took I didn't see so myself. Who's that? Oh, there's a big group chat that happened.
35That's why my phone was going on.
39From Tommy Hilfiger and Canawan, a group of great people. Was that Patrick Schwarzenegger, that campaign? Yes. Nice. Did you watch White Lotus yet? I didn't make it all the way through. Okay. Tom and Jerry? Yes. I really like this picture.
59I think I have my my pop-up sweet more drop Lucas he's so cute look good he probably said something really unhinged we connected recently on social media he was very sweet to me yeah I don't think we've met in person but one oh my god he's he is such a trip he and I together absolutely diabolical really yes it's like the Sagittarius Gemini excellency okay who's the last actor you were mistaken for not an actor okay but you know um she's a girl on tiktok um who who went viral um let's see balan balan dupree okay she went viral um because she would make tiktoks about, like, having Tourette's. Okay.
52And she's really fucking funny. Yeah. You know, and she, like, she would be making a TikTok about, you know, the hand sanitizer that she was just gifted. And then she would, like, take it, and he'd, like, steer the Titan. And that was when the Titans were so well. Like, you know, and wind it up. She's just very funny. I think she actually, I could be wrong, she might be doing a reality show. she's very very cute so I got they thought I was her so they looked at I was at Burger King and they said wind it up and I was like wind it up yeah I'll take that I like her I love wind it up you know her too and they're like what aren't you her I'm like no but thank you I appreciate it nonetheless yes worst note a director has ever given you talk like person period How did you respond to that?
49I was like, yeah. It was like the Brittany Broski meme. It was like a... Totally. And finally, Spirit of Happy Second Fuse, an actor who always makes you happy. You see them on screen and you're instantly happier. I love Shitbug. Love that guy. He's awesome. Pierce Brosnan great I love when he you just saw mom yeah that's what you're thinking and I think it's really good one of the great singers of our time Pierce Brosnan he committed movie that makes you sad we kind of talked about this a little bit what's the go-to movie that makes you sad the one that is the one that makes me cry how to train your dragon but it's like happy sad confused very happy sad yes okay and finally again we kind of covered this but food that makes you confused.
42You see it on a menu, you don't get it. Yes. Why do people eat this? Is it pork? Is that what you're saying? No, squid, I think. Squid. Or like jellyfish. Okay. Or shark. Yeah. You know, some of these like, but also I'm not one to talk. I love seerge. Right. I have plans for this dinner already tonight. You're already thinking about it. Yes. Half of your brain on those conversations are like seerge in three hours. It's so good. It's a box of just uni that comes with the rice. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I've had one of you. Those are great. I'm so excited. Also, I know we have to be done. It's okay. But did you know, while I was reading, okay, I was watching a TikTok, but someone was saying that the James Webb Telescope has found, has discovered something that is evidence, or could be strong evidence towards the fact that our universe is a pocket universe in a black hole.
37You can't just leave a conversation ending on that note. that's the beginning of the conversation not the end of the conversation i've been telling everyone i'm like oh my god but that means then there's a it could be that there are other black holes in our universe there are also pocket universes and then we're just right right right great by the way it's all a simulation thanks madeline appreciate it well i'm gonna keep doing my podcast in the pocket universe whatever this is i know but like what if why can't we be in the pocket universe with like fairies and shit. I'd love to be anywhere else than whatever universe this is right now.
12Let's be frank. Right. Anywhere else. Anywhere else. But we did it. We did the podcast. Thank you for making time. Enjoy your sea urchin. Oh my god I'm so excited. It's gonna be great. Anti-village I'm gonna get all of it. It's gonna be so good. Next time I'm gonna dress to the nines for you because you just you brought it. I did. I gave I get you know it's giving something.
