In short
This “Last Looks” episode of How Did This Get Made? revisits two prior picks: Triple X and The Legend of Billie Jean, focusing on listener corrections, omissions, and bonus deleted scenes. For Triple X, hosts discuss specific plot/stunt oddities: Xander Cage says “Welcome to the Xander Zone” despite no camera/audience present, Anarchy 99’s Czech Republic base and water-based delivery logic, and why henchmen shoot a steel vault door instead of bulletproof glass. They also cover real-world trivia like Vin Diesel’s XXX coat sold at auction (estimated $1k–$2k, sold near $9k) and the “NSA pop-up” confusion around the Czech police setting. For The Legend of Billie Jean, guests/Discord users debate character logic (e.g., Lloyd’s wolfman-mask scare vs. Billie’s house intrusion), Pat Benatar’s “Invincible” meaning shift after 9/11, and the origin of Billie Jean’s haircut (LaMere cutting Helen Slater’s hair to look like she did it herself). Notable examples include a proposed modern remake pitch and a “Belt Dad’s Belt” auction prize.

1:42Jason Mantzoukas:guys, Xander's coat up for sale, and who the hell is LaMare? All this and more on today's How Did This Get Made? Last Looks. Hit the theme!
2:13Last looks. Last looks. How did this get made? Last looks.
2:21Jason Mantzoukas:Hello, people of Earth, and welcome to How Did This Get Made? Last Looks. I am your host, Paul Scheer, and you know what? Fair is fair, and that is why today we are giving you this special, super-sized edition of How Did This Get Made? Last Looks. That's right. We took a last looks hiatus while we were on summer vacation. And on this episode, I will address your corrections and omissions on both Triple X and The Legend of Billie Jean. And I'll even be sharing some bonus deleted scenes from both episodes as well. Jason will join me in just a bit to chat about some of the amazing things that we are watching from documentaries to books.
3:00Jason Mantzoukas:We got a ton of things to recommend to you. That's what I'm telling you, people. we are giving you the entire thing today we are your peter coyote and we are gonna bring justice to how did this get made and as always at the end of the show i will reveal the movie that we'll be covering on next week's episode but before i go any further can i give a shout out to our pal rob from long island for that amazing brand new opening theme song rob you're killing it you You always are killing it. A legend here on the show. Now, remember, if you have a short theme song, if you think I can do better than Rob, you know what?
3:42Jason Mantzoukas:It's a tall order. Don't think about doing better. Just think about doing different. All right. If you can do different than Rob from Long Island, then why don't you submit your song to us? You just have to go to hdtgm.com and there's a little section right there on the page that says submit a song. Now, I want to let you all know that Sabrina, who sang the second opinion song in our legend of Billie Jean episode helped us design two t-shirts for the movie. One says Pat Benatar was wrong. And the other simply says Billie Jean. And it looks great. Not just Billie Jean, like in a plain font. It's in the cool Billie Jean font.
4:19Jason Mantzoukas:We saw her shirt and we're like, we need to make this. And we said, why don't you just make it yourself? And so when you buy that shirt, guess who gets all the money? Sabrina. So you're helping out of how did this get made fan? thank you, Sabrina. I hope a lot of people buy that shirt. And I want you to know that if you want to play with Jason, June, and I, you can. That sounds dirty, but hear me out. We have made an official, how did this get made, mini movie league in this year's Vulture Movies Fantasy League. Now, if you've never played this before, it's like fantasy sports, but you draft movies instead of athletes.
4:57Jason Mantzoukas:And I got to tell you, I always think this is the year I'm going to kill this. And I do terribly. I do terribly. But anyway, if you want to join our mini league, just go to vulture.com slash HDTGM or click on the link in this episode's show notes. Now, you may not know this, but June and I are doing a brand new multicam that's in front of a live studio audience sitcom for Amazon created by Marta Kaufman, the person who created Friends and Grace and Frankie. It is a improvised multicam where June and I play Dinks. The show is called Dinks. Dual income, no kids. It will have John Gabrus in it. And we are putting together right now an amazing guest star cast.
5:44Jason Mantzoukas:And we want you to be in the audience. Now, here's the thing. This show is taping in October. We're taping on the 2nd, the 7th, the 10th, the 16th, the 21st, and the 24th. And we want you to be in the crowd. And all you have to do is RSVP with your preferred dates. You can go to one, you can go to all, whatever you want. It's all for you. Just hit us up at dinksrsvp at gmail.com. Now, it does take place in Los Angeles in a very convenient, awesome spot that we can't yet announced, but you'll love it. DinksRSVP at gmail.com. It will be a blast. Every show is not only improvised, but uses your suggestions.
6:29Jason Mantzoukas:It's really, really fun. I hope I'm excited about this one. I'm excited about anything that I'm in that I'm passionate about, but this is going to be fun where it's, we're figuring it out, which is a part of the equation that I haven't had to do in a very long time. What else do you need to know? You like improv? I love improv. You want to go see Dinks? That's one thing. But you can also come see me at Largo on 9-11. That's right. 9-11 at Largo. John Gabrus joins us to sit in this month. Oh, it's going to be fun. Daniel Schneider will be there. Corinne Wells will be there. Rob Riggle will be there.
7:03Jason Mantzoukas:Rob Hubel will be there. It's going to be a absolute blast. So check that out. All right. Now let's get into it. Last week, we talked at length about Triple X and the legend of Billie Jean, we had questions, and we might have even missed a few things. Here is your chance to set us straight. It is now time for corrections and omissions. Let's put this all into context. Let's hear all your opinions. Let's hear all of your corrections. Let's hear about our omissions.
7:45Jason Mantzoukas:Thank you, Rob from Long Island for that amazing theme song. Up first, we'll be talking about Triple X, a film that Discord user, you brace yourself, thinks should have had the tagline. Triple X, despite all his rage, he's still just a Xander Cage. Oh, I love it. You brace yourself. That was great. All right, let's go to the Discord. clane 4671 writes i am surprised that nobody on the pod mentioned this because it genuinely broke my brain in a way that no other bad movie line had done before during the movie's climax xander stops diffusing the bomb so he can say his catchphrase welcome to the xander zone to no one there is no camera filming him and not a soul to hear him and then he finishes diffusing the bomb and immediately face plants into water at 60 miles per hour.
8:41Now, it is a pretty amazing clip.
8:45Jason Mantzoukas:I want to just play him doing it for you just so you can get it in your head.
8:56Jason Mantzoukas:And here's my theory on this. He's so used to doing stunts for his not YouTube YouTube. I don't know, whatever it was, his DVDs that are being sent out to people that he can't do a cool act without saying his catchphrase. It's like it's like a like a tick. Like he's got to do it. Right. So I don't think that he was saying it to anyone. I think he was like, yeah, there's always cameras on me because I'm only doing this because I am an extreme whatever. He's not a spy. He's an extreme whatever. So I think it's like he didn't even realize there were no cameras there. That's my thought. Fun Facts 47 writes, Anarchy 99's plan was to have a sub that will circumnavigate the globe and kill millions.
9:46Jason Mantzoukas:So why did they launch it in the landlocked country of the Czech Republic? The perfect plan. All those rivers, right? The rivers will allow it to go out and, you know, be quiet. Isn't that the most kind of anarchy way to deal with things? We don't need the water, man. We'll go to Czech Republic. Also, what's the point of having a flamethrower attached to a car's hood? Xander only wants to drive fast, and the physics of the flames while the car is moving would immediately make it blow back into the windshield. unless you're in like a James Bond situation where I think it was in the first movie where he's surrounded.
10:34Jason Mantzoukas:Maybe it was the last movie. I don't remember. But he's surrounded. And if the car is in park, a flamethrower is great. Don't touch my car. Or it's security. Like someone checks to see if the door is unlocked. Flamethrower. Just done. Flamethrower. Oh, wow. a lot of, a lot of Anarchy 99 questions, then you come to me, no, this isn't like ask Paul to explain the plot device of the movie. It's that you have seen something and you are explaining it to me. I've already done my explaining. That's the show. This part is you explaining to me. But anyway, I will continue. You brace yourself, writes, are we ever told why Anarchy 99 has Prague as a home base when they're all Russian.
11:21Jason Mantzoukas:Also, their castle fortress is supposedly at the base of a mountain, but the closest mountain range to Prague is 67 miles northeast. So are they really driving an hour and a half each way just to go clubbing? Well, okay, first of all, let me say this. It's always worth a 90-minute drive to get to the better club. People don't tell you that, but you got, yeah, you got to drive to the best club. Secondly, I thought that the castle is where they're like doing their work. They're probably living. They probably have a flat in the city. And Russia, why is it their home base? Because they're expats. All this movie makes sense.
12:00Jason Mantzoukas:You brace yourself. You know, you came in and, you know, I was on your side, but now I'm like, no, you missed all the amazing subtlety. But thank you for researching how far that mountain was. That's the kind of stuff I need here. All right, let's go to the phones. Pete, the S-Man, what do you got? Hey, Paul. It's Pete, the S-Man here. Quick question. Why did Anarchy 99 use a water-based vehicle to deliver a chemical agent when water, in fact, neutralizes it? I mean, it was solar-powered, so wouldn't something aerial-based be better suited? You know, imagine the scene where, you know, Xander is on the rocket and he's trying to dismantle it, and then he does and has to figure out how to freefall the safety.
12:46We'd have to remove the egregious American flag parachute, but just thinking that. Love to get your thoughts, and you can't say, oh, it's just because they're anarchists.
12:59Jason Mantzoukas:Well, Pete, I won't use anarchy to answer you, but I will say a couple things, and I think we've already talked about this. Water, okay, is a stealth vector, okay? It allows the villains to bypass airspace, which is monitored, and radar, and ground border checkpoints. It's a quiet, unimpeded path straight into the heart of Europe. Plus, the weapon isn't going to be detonated inside the water. I mean, this would have worked unless, you know, the only reason why this doesn't work is because of one man, Xander Cage, right? They couldn't have predicted Xander. And it's a mobile launch pad, right? So it's not going to like, I mean, yes, I guess it could fall off in, but it's also safely sealed inside, you know, and they, yes.
13:54Jason Mantzoukas:So arrogance would be part of it, too, because they believed that the drone was unstoppable. But you know what? You never expected, like I said, Xander Cage. Thank you, Pete. Next up, Clarissa from Boston. Hi, Jason, June, and Paul. I recently saw a purse that Estelle Getty used as Sophia on the Golden Girls sold at auction under a lock called Ladies of the 80s, and I thought, well, they stole that title from Jason. I was curious to see what else they had at that auction house, and lo and behold, Vin Diesel's coat from XXX was also there late last year. It was listed under Xander Cage, Vin Diesel for coat, which just gives more support to June calling it a coat.
14:39Also, in the Triple X episode, Rob said that he thinks Vin has the coat and is wearing it around his house. The coat was estimated at$1 ,000 to$2 ,000 and sold for close to$9 ,000. Did Vin pay way more for the coat so that no one else could have it? Maybe. Anyway, love the show. Thanks for supporting libraries and your local indie bookstores. Bye.
15:00Jason Mantzoukas:All right, Klesser. You know what? Yes, good theory that Xander, or sorry, Vin bought his own coat. But here's my theory. there's like three dupes of that coat. You know, they're in dupes, you know, it's like, they got to make a couple of them because, you know, what if like at lunch, Vin, you know, put some like mustard relish on that jacket because he's eating a big old hot dog, but they got to have another one. So I'm going to say that Vince kept one and we sold the doubles. They have stunt doubles one. We sold it. The fuck double because Vin does not do his own fucking. Um, all right. Next one up, Sean McBee.
15:36Jason Mantzoukas:Oh, I love Sean. All right, here we go. What do we got? Sean. Hey, Paul. Sean McBee, long-time discorder, first-time caller. I wanted to talk about the scene where Yergi traps the people in the room so that he can test his deadly gas, right? So Yergi and his top henchmen lock themselves behind these clear doors and release the gas. And when everyone in the room is panicking, a bunch of the guys have machine guns, and they decide to use those machine guns to try to affect an escape to save their own lives. But they don't shoot at those clear doors that have people mocking them right on the other side.
16:17No, no. They shoot the giant steel vault door. And none of the scientists in the room go, try that over there. That looks like it's probably bulletproof, right? But it at least is a more likely source of escape than the giant steel door. We can agree on that, right? And there's people like actively mocking them on the other side. So at least a little bit of like last minute catharsis to shoot them directly in their faces. Just a thought. Anyway, come to Atlanta. Like we're good enough for the World Cup and not for you.
16:51Jason Mantzoukas:What the fuck guys? Sean, again, you're asking me here a question that I don't know the answer to, but my immediate thought when I saw it was, well, that's bulletproof glass. Now, I guess in that moment, if you know it's bulletproof glass, you won't shoot at it. And maybe you shoot at the steel door because you're like, well, fuck it. We'll try that. We know that's bulletproof. Let me try the other thing. I mean, they're also at the verge of death. I'm not going to question people's last minutes of life, you know, thought process. They don't want to die. And they're just trying. They're just trying.
17:24Jason Mantzoukas:We're all just trying. Anyway, thank you for all these triple X corrections and omissions, but I will not be crowning a winner until we also tackle the submissions for the legend of Billie Jean. And for now, who's in the lead? Who is in the lead? Well, I loved hearing from Sean. I think Pete tried to like mess me up. Clarissa not only ends the debate about coat, which is really good, but I'm going You know what? I'm actually going to say Clarissa right now is in the lead. Clarissa is in the lead, but can it stay that way? Stick around to find out after listening to this bonus deleted scene from our Triple X live show.
18:04Jason Mantzoukas:Hi. Hi. How are you? Hi. I'm well. How are you? Anna Lynn. Nice to meet you, Anna Lynn. Nice to meet you, too. I just want to know, how did everybody get everything into the Czech Republic's police department to like blow it up and show off all his toys or his, yeah, all the gadgets? Okay, so I think he was just, I think that they let the NSA hang out at the, wait, he's in the police department? Well, yes, but that is what's very confusing. Yeah, we're sending you somebody. There is a police presence that I think is. Like they send, yeah. America has jurisdiction, you know, wherever we go. I could not understand, though.
18:47It's us. It's us. The whole place. We can do whatever we want. But they were check cops that he was sometimes answering to. Sometimes they were answering to him. I could not understand what the partnership was.
19:00Jason Mantzoukas:They said it's like an NSA pop-up. Does anyone? That's true. Also, can I ask a quick question, Paul? Did anyone else bump on the significance of the two Ivans? Does anyone know what I'm talking about? By the way, I just want to point out, as we talk about the two Ivans, that the QR code that Tim has given out has been passed around the audience. I'm watching the FedEx envelope come to the back row at this point. All right, so the two Ivans. Somebody have an answer about the two Ivans? All right, and then I'll come back. You have an answer about the two Ivans? One of the Ivans dies, and the other Ivans goes like, like we give a flying fuck all right what is your question sir i was following up on the czech police it seems that the uh way that you become the chief of police is by killing the chief of police because by the end zander is telling the czech police what to do and what the whole plan is.
19:58Jason Mantzoukas:And they're totally in. Oh, yeah. I guess this is a movie that's a shock, like an indictment about Czech politics. I mean, it feels very loosey-goosey over there. This one on The Legend of Billie Jean, a movie that Discord user Hotline thinks could have also been called Illegally Blonde.
23:02Jason Mantzoukas:Wow, guys, you know what? Maybe I should just give an award to these because I have to say the one before was pretty great too. Despite all his rage, he's still just a Xander Cage. I love these. These are really good. Illegally Blonde is specifically very good. So thank you, Hotline. Remember, if you have an alt-movie tagline or title, you can submit it to us on our Discord at discord.gg slash hdtgm. Now, speaking of our Discord, let's hear what they had to say about the legend of Billie Jean. Now, Jamie311 writes, Hey, gang, just want to stand up for Pat Benatar, who is an absolute badass, and share that I saw her two weeks ago, and she did not say she hated this movie before Invincible.
23:44Jason Mantzoukas:Thank God, as it would have broken my heart. She said, this is for all the women. So I think she's had a change of heart. I adore the song and the line. And with the power of conviction, there is no sacrifice. It has driven my activism for much of my adult life. Well, thank you, Jamie. Now, I will say this. I think it would be very weird if Pat Benatar in 2026 is still, you know, railing on this movie. I think that the stories that we were telling were roughly more around the time. Now, I did see this kind of conversation brewing on Discord, and I found an article. And in the article, Pat Benatar talks about how this song, Invincible, kind of changed its meaning.
24:29Jason Mantzoukas:And it all went down at this concert that she played on 9-11-2001. Now, in the article, Pat says, I always sang it as a song of empowerment, but this took a whole other life that night. And they went berserk. Everyone was sobbing. They had sheets that said God bless America on them. And it was such a moment because I was just shaking from the emotion of being afraid. It was like the lights went on and the words were new, like it was the first time I'd ever sang it. It wasn't, of course, but it had such an impact on the crowd and us. So I really love that she found a second meaning. And potentially it's the reason why she didn't have to rail on Billie Jean.

25:06Jason Mantzoukas:Maybe her eyes open. She's like, you know what? Life is too short for me to be shitting on this movie that I didn't get. And here's my thought on that too. People are like, Pat, that movie sucks. Why did you give your music to it? And I feel like she didn't get a chance to make her own opinion. She's like, yeah, it does suck. And she wanted to stay on the cool side of the street, which says that like Pat's a follower. I don't want to really label Pat like that. But let's ask Pat. somebody find out some definitive information from pat please now stinkpot turtle writes i love when lloyd scares billy jean with the wolfman mask and she's like don't scare people like that and then proceeds not to talk about the fact that she a stranger broke into his house with her friends and started going through his stuff and eating out of his fridge not a complaint just an observation well stinkpot turtle you are on my side on this there are things in this movie that don't make sense.
25:58Jason Mantzoukas:Not saying I need to question them, but just saying, like, can we acknowledge the script is not perfect. Dr. Guts 1003 writes, do we think that Putter got her name because her mom had sex at the miniature golf course? You know, because the name of the miniature golf course is the Candy Shack. And so maybe that's why Putter has such a sweet tooth throughout the movie. Dr. Guts, I want to just say it right now, but I'm not gonna. That might be the, I mean, you know what I'm going to say. Pretty great observation by Dr. Guts. Jimmy Yu writes, I'm not saying that I necessarily want a remake of The Legend of Billie Jean, but I can see how it would be relevant in today's age.
26:36Jason Mantzoukas:By the way, Jimmy Yu, I had the same thought. It would be perfect. Jimmy Yu continues to pitch it out by saying, have the bully be the son of a tech bro instead of videotape sent to the local TV station. The video would go viral on social media using the hashtag fair is fair. You could even combine those two plot points and make the tech bro dad an owner of a social media company who initially tried to contain Billie Jean's story and then later exploits her fame for profit, mirroring the plot point where Mr. Piot, I know people don't like why I say it, but Mr. Piot sells Billie Jean's merchandise.
27:10Jason Mantzoukas:And the theme of rich people bullying poor people is even more relevant now than it was in the 80s. Have Billie Eilish do a cover of Invincible, and the movie is almost made. Which members of Geek Squad should be cast in it? Wow, Jimmy, you just pitched out a full movie. I've forgotten who was in Geek Squad, but I'm going to say just to get this movie made and we're off the ground, it's got to be Sidney Sweeney as Billie Jean. I know everyone's like, what? No, but you know that that's what they would do. And no shade at Sidney Sweeney, but I think that would be the call. Carlton Fisk, 72, writes,
28:14Jason Mantzoukas:Yes, Jeffrey L. Kimball is a genius and did amazing work with Tony Scott, but he also DP'd Jacob's Ladder. That's right. And two other How Did This Get Made classics, Old Dogs and The Specialist. I love a connection like this. Thank you, Scott, for finding that little connection, our producer Scott. All right, let's go to the phones. Adam from Virginia, what do you got? Hey, this is Adam with a kind of omission for the legend of Billie Jean. When the scooter is first stolen, Billie goes to Peter Coyote, and I wanted to point out that he is friendly, but he dismisses it in a boys-will-be-boys kind of way and specifically mentions that Billie is pretty and they're probably just trying to get her attention.
29:01After that is when she goes home and finds Binks beaten up. Then the next day, she escalates things and they spiral. and part of the reason Peter Coyote is trying to be understanding the rest of the movie is because he realizes he screwed up in the beginning so how understanding would he have been if not for meeting her initially seemingly even the most decent person in an authority figure role in the movie still has his blind spots and biases that contributed to the situation and Billy already had a reason to think she wouldn't be believed when things did get out of control
29:34Jason Mantzoukas:yes yes you're right i mean absolutely i mean but that's a character showing that he like learned from his mistakes i i feel like i don't even know what to say but yes that's i think the movie is very clear on showing that i mean i think he's like you're right boys will be boys don't worry about it i think he's like uh corpus christi people are fucking coming in here all the time don't they know i was fighting et's back from where i was from they think this shit about scooters is a big deal. I think he's treating her like a kid. And I think part of that is misogyny, but I like a small part, because I think if a boy came in there, he would treat him the same exact way.
30:13Jason Mantzoukas:That's my gut. Anyway, Matt, what do you got? Hey everyone. This is Matt. I was just listening to your legend of Billie Jean episode and you were talking about the age of her brother while drinking. You may not know this, but in Texas, the drinking age was 18 until 1981. And And then it only turned to 21 in 1985, which is the same year that Billie Jean came out. So when they filmed it, an 18-year-old drinking wouldn't have been illegal. I love this rule and weird rule that it is. But actually, at the same time, maybe that should be the way that we should do it, right? Drink with your family first or, you know, understand how to do it so you don't go crazy when you get to 21 or when you just start illegally drinking in high school.
30:56Jason Mantzoukas:But you know what? I don't want to just move on from this because I do think it's interesting. Critical sophistry chimes in to add, Texas to this day has what is called a grandfather law, which makes it legal for minors to drink in the presence of and the consent of their parent or guardian. Well, look at that. Just solve my problem right there. I said it right there. All right. I don't mind this. I don't mind that rule, honestly. You're graduating high school. Why not have a beer? Next up, Larry from California. Hey, Paul, a few quick points on the legend of Billie Jean. First, Matthew Robbins, the writer and director, you mentioned that he had reworked the original script with another screenwriter in order to, you know, kind of deepen the story.
31:41Well, I can't help but notice that there are some similarities to his first screenwriting credit, which happens to be Steven Spielberg's first theatrical release, Sugar Land Express, with a strong female lead in Goldie Hawn, a couple on the run from the law, the media sensation that builds around it, the legend that grows, and all takes place in Texas. Seems like he was just trying to do a more youthful version of that movie. Second, Billie Jean's haircut gets its own credit in the end credits. Designed by LeMaire, whoever or whatever that is. I mean, look, fair is fair.
32:20Jason Mantzoukas:Great film, great podcast. Thanks, Paul. You know, Larry, I've never seen the Sugar Land Express, but two people after this episode had aired had said, oh, I'm surprised you haven't brought that up. I'm surprised you haven't brought that up. And sometimes people talk to us about this show as if we are doing a serious deconstruction of it. Like, well, why would we bring it up? I mean, ultimately, why? It's more for you to bring it up in this moment because there's nothing funny about that. It's a similar plot to Sugar Land Express. It's interesting, though. It is interesting. And Sugar Land Express, from what you described, feels like it has a little bit of a Bonnie and Clyde element to it.
32:59Jason Mantzoukas:Uh, so I feel like this is like Bonnie and Clyde, but what if it was just Bonnie? Um, now I do want to break into your final thought about the Billie Jean cut being by LaMare. Now, Scott, uh, again, coming in hot with some good information. Um, he found out some pretty interesting info about LaMare and Billie Jean's haircut. There's this 1985 LA times article, uh, and this is a little quote from it. A lot of people say they can perform their jobs with their eyes closed. Well, Beverly Hills hairdresser, LaMere, just did for the movie The Legend of Billie Jean. LaMere was called in to cut actress Helen Slater's waist-length blonde locks to make it look as though Slater cut it herself.
33:47Jason Mantzoukas:LaMere says she shut her eyes, twisted the hair in her hands, and hacked it off with a razor and thinning shears. Following a recent screening, LaMere claims women were coming up to her and requesting a similar do. She sees the hacked off look as somewhere between punk and the perfect little haircut. By the way, the perfect little haircut, put that with Blakely Thornton's slutty little glasses and you got a great little look. Thank you, Scott. We got a little bit of info on LaMere. So many great corrections and omissions this week. I already gave Scott a winning correctional mission last time.
34:27Jason Mantzoukas:I can't do that again. Oh, wow. I mean, you know what? I love Dr. Guts, but I want to give it up to Jimmy Yu, who pitched out an entire movie. So Jimmy Yu, you are this week's corrections and omissions winner. Now, your prize that we have purchased for you is the most iconic prop from The Legend of Billie Jean. This is going to be great while you're writing your new script with Sidney Sweeney. It's even better than Binx's motor scooter, even better than Billie Jean's cutoff wetsuit. I am, of course, talking about Belt Dad's Belt. That's right. You are going to get Belt Dad's Belt from the same auction house that had Xander Cage's coat for sale.
35:08Jason Mantzoukas:It's also, we're selling Belt Dad's Belt. And we bought it in a very heated auction for the bargain price of$50 ,000. It was going for$4 ,000. And the bidding got so intense, it went up to five, just like Xander's jacket. So anyway, I hope you enjoy it. Jimmy, you get to writing that script. And honestly, you could probably just get away with not even really crediting Billie Jean at all. It seems like just write another Bonnie and Clyde and you've just changed everything about it. All right. Thank you for all of these amazing corrections and omissions. A lot of them were just questions for me.
35:50Jason Mantzoukas:But if you didn't win this prize, don't worry about it. The Belt Dad belt will make it to you if you've been bad. You could also try to win a prize on the next episode by leaving us a voicemail at speakpipe.com slash httgm or by writing to us on our Discord. All right. Before Jason pops by for Just Chat, I have one more bonus deleted scene to share with you all. It is now time for our Legend of Billie Jean deleted scene. take a listen alright what's your name, what's your question? Amanda, I also wanted to say another modern example of Luigi Mangione buying a lot of merch from that guy we're buying from his family?
36:32Jason Mantzoukas:oh I guess we are we'd be buying merch from Louis, but we wouldn't be buying merch from the CEO's family we'd be buying merch from UnitedHealthcare I'm sure, yeah, I'm sure but my question was, did anybody Free Luigi. I'm on record. When Christian... You mean Luigi from Super Mario. Yes, yes, I'm sorry. Yes, Mario's got to get him out. He's trapped in that castle. But I mean Mario Batali. Mario Batali needs to free Luigi Mangione. I hope he brings his crocs. That's my Mario and Luigi. I'm so sorry. When Binx was dressing up as Billie Jean at the end, did you notice he had falsies on, even though he was wearing glasses?
37:20I really liked he put that extra touch there. He really did look good for a movie, but this is where
37:25Jason Mantzoukas:maybe I'm shown up here that the man with the wolfman mask probably helped him with that. He probably was like, hey, come in. I got a lot of good Halloween costume stuff. Let's go do it. Paul, I think you're right. That's Lloyd all the way. Life happens on your carpet. Spills, muddy paws, mysterious stains, but keeping it looking fresh is easier than you think. 39:07Jason Mantzoukas:All right, everybody, make sure that you are tuning in every Tuesday for a classic How Did This Get Made episode. This week's was Oogie Loves Big Balloon Adventure. Detroit still hates us for that. And by the way, who was saying that we should come to Atlanta? We do. We got to come. We haven't gone out on the road in a long time. We've all been too busy, and we want to get back on the road. We got to do it. anyway Oogie Loves sorry Detroit but it is one of my favorite episodes so every Tuesday you can check out a classic episode they're fun we've pulled them from the vault and until we have another way for you to listen to them that's the only way you can just kind of hope maybe you can even request a few on the discord I think you can discord.gg slash hdtgm all right now without any further ado it is time for Jason to join me for a just chat and you know what since we've already heard two songs by rob from long island why don't we make it a hat trick with one more rob i actually love this a lot here you go now it's the time of the show it's the time of the show which time is that it's the time when jason joins paul and they j-u-s-t-c-h-a-t just chat Jason, how are you?
40:31Paul, boy, thrilled to see you. Here we are, ready to talk about stuff.
40:36Jason Mantzoukas:Oh, man. How is your summer stuff? Whoa, so much summer stuff going on. I got to tell you, there's one thing that I've been dying to recommend to you. As a matter of fact, I think I may just give you this book. Great. Just finished it. It is called The Unmaking of Hudson Hawk. And it is a book only about the Hudson Hawk movie, which we did here on the podcast. And it is fascinating. A movie that started as a song that Bruce Willis wrote on a bender with his friend at 25 years old. And it continues to develop. And his good friend, who he was writing this song with, is heavily quoted and really just kind of lifted along on this journey of like a hundred plus day shoot.
41:25Jason Mantzoukas:and it is it is great i mean richard grant i guess kept a diary of it so also his like detailing of literally just days on set david caruso losing his mind because he is treated like a second tier star and bruce willis is like a first tier star and it's they they can't do their own laundry in in rome because there's like no laundromats like they're shooting in countries that are at war at one point they had to walk like five miles in the middle of the night because the hotel was closed like crazy i love easy stuff i love the like the documentary approach like the apocalypse now level documentary approach to the absurdity that is hudson hawk you know the interesting thing about this too is like you brought in the creative team of heathers to make this movie so like it becomes like heathered out like you have you have the writer and director coming on and they kind of just totally botch or not botch they deconstruct steven de souza's script and he's in the book and he's just fucking pissed at every he's like oh yeah i guess that's a deconstruction like he is relentless about how much he hates their changes and then the writer is also able to get like script notes from the head of studio like on the like literally on the script like what what does this even mean so there is a lot there's so much in it that is really i'm i'm fascinated by a flop and and in a way that like a big swing flop and this has got like the hallmarks of a of a blank check kind of a movie which is because bruce willis is such a star now we will let him develop a movie based on one of his songs and and and it really is just like when you hear all the creative meetings like the first two writers from moonlighting who were oh wow brought in to write the first script and you know and there was a lot of just you know like you're right it is a blank check like bruce willis makes die hard like what do you want to do and then this thing he really pushed but the one thing this is not spoiling the fun of the book, but I thought was really interesting because you and I are such big fans of Moonlighting is this stopped Bruce Willis from being funny and trusting his comedy instinct.
43:52Jason Mantzoukas:Now, not to say that his comedy instinct was great. Like, I think with I think he's a great comedic performer if reigned in the right way. Right. Yes. And it's a shame because one of the like the theories at the very end is like, oh, we didn't get any Bruce Willis comedies because after Blind Date and after this, it was sort of like, nope, that doesn't work for me. He and Nick Cage have a kind of similar trajectory where they kind of, and Nick Cage then does come around and start doing lighter movies later in more recent years, but he also makes a strange pivot to he's in those early, like the Raising Arizonas and the movies that are truly funny and is so comedically adept, but then goes hard, turns hard pivot to jacked action guy, you know?
44:47Jason Mantzoukas:Yeah, you know, I think what it is, and this is maybe just the difference of audiences, once you are successful as an action star, there's no other way to kind of brand a comedy unless you are highlighting the action because you're trying to bring the most people there and then the people who come are like, wait a second this is a comedy i wanted an action you know it's it's that weird well i feel like even the over the course of the diehards the tone shifts wildly oh yeah you know he doesn't he's not as quippy and funny in by the third and fourth die no it's deadly serious like and uh i remember uh a friend telling us like that you know like he was more obsessed with like the amount of blood he had on him to look like tough at a certain point like not it wasn't about like i mean look he's on the wing of like a harrier jet like whatever the fuck that was in that movie it was so dumb but uh but yeah it's like it's an interesting turn and i and i think that there is also just honestly from a financial point of view it's like oh it just makes sense for me to like shit out even a bad action movie well those action movies the that's because they travel they are worldwide phenomena and they can make much more money than a comedy than a straight comedy and that's always been the case it's so interesting I'm so excited to read this book it's so interesting that like that and the what was the book called that was about the making of the other kind of fantastic flop The Devil's Candy that was making of The Bonfire of the Vanities also Bruce Willis and Tom Hanks and that whole debacle about the making of that movie.
46:32Like, Bruce Willis in this era is just, can't quite decide where he should land.
46:38Jason Mantzoukas:There's a great moment in the Hudson Hawk book where they're on set and they basically have to have this come-to-Jesus moment with Bruce. Like, guys, we gotta stick to the script. We can't fuck around anymore. Like, we have to rein in your instincts. And they said almost like as if it was scripted, he gets a phone call during this meeting. And the first test screenings have come in from Bonfire of the Vanities. And they're like, movie sucks. You're great. We need more of you and your instinct in this movie. So he's like, guys. Oh, my God. So he's like on the up. And now, meanwhile, when you look back at it, he's one of the people who got ripped apart in the reviews, critically, from Bonfire of the Vanities.
47:27Jason Mantzoukas:So it's like you could tell that when he goes back to shoot Bonfire, he's bringing some of that Hudson Hawk swagger in. He doesn't realize that he's sitting on bad instincts. So, yeah, it's a real tricky thing. This is nuts. I'm excited to read this book. It's really, really fun. I think you will love it. Yeah, for sure. Oh, that's great. I love that. Just because we're talking about that and some, like, the documentaries about some movies and Hollywood stuff. Years, not years, just a couple years ago, I think I recommended to you that, like, five-plus-hour Robocop documentary. Yes, great. Okay, so there is now one that is similarly like almost six hours long, and it is about the making of John Carpenter's The Thing.
48:20Okay, I saw a little bit about this. So it's called The Thing Expanded, and it is five plus hours long. I'm midway through it, and it is incredible. You know, if you are a—everybody participates. Everybody is there to talk and, you know, really dig in on the movie. And so you've got John Carpenter. You've got all the special effects people that are still alive participate. It is so well done in a way that if you love the movie, it is such a deep dive. So you've got to love the movie. It is awesome.
48:56Jason Mantzoukas:No, I love these longer form docs. As a matter of fact, I think that the Hudson Hawk book is going to turn into a podcast. there's a lot of this stuff that is really i mean because visually you're just you're just really listening to people in interview format for the most part you know and it's like and it's kind of fascinating to just this is always like not to say in a way that is derogatory to these great filmmakers but it's like it's great to have on in the back or it could be doing a couple different things that you're listening and and kind of putting it all together but i am fascinated i'm fascinated that we are going that deep on these oh they are yes and they they do feel like Like, you're right.
49:34They do feel like, you know, it feels like a season of You Must Remember This. Yes. Or something like that. It feels very well researched and very well documented, but indulgent in a way that a book would in the past. Yeah. It's not like this would be included in the special features of a DVD. Like, isn't it cool we made the thing? It is a deep dive. It is a for fans.
49:58Jason Mantzoukas:You don't have to cut people off. I feel like sometimes when you're doing these things, it's like, oh, well, I have to just put them in a moment. moment and and that will be it and there's a longer story there like tell the longer story i will tell you the one that i i watched uh and i've never talked about on the show is megadoc which is the documentary about megapolis uh megalopolis yes i watched it as well it was incredible it was better than the movie or more engaging than the movie yeah it's i mean it look It's hilarious that he's got two documentaries about movies that he has made that one obviously goes very, very right, Hearts of Darkness.
50:37Jason Mantzoukas:And then this one goes very, very wrong. But really, and Mike Figgis directed this, which is so kind of interesting. Yep. I thought that was cool, too. Yeah, I really enjoyed that documentary. And I really enjoyed what was, it was interesting because I wish I'd seen it closer to when we did the episode and stuff. because a lot of my questions about what was he up to or what was he thinking were kind of inside of the documentary, you know, which I thought made them not not that it made the movie better necessarily, but it it was helpful to I enjoy it made me appreciate the movie more. I think, you know, not that I think the movie is great.
51:16I don't. But, you know, it made me appreciate it
51:19Jason Mantzoukas:more just to see the how of it you know i totally agree i you know i am i went to vegas this past weekend nice um it was a fun i went there is your band still playing the sphere yeah well you know honestly it we're having fun we have a lot of guests come in uh we had kenny uh chesney would come and just kind of rock yeah yeah ches is great and it was really fun um but i went to go see Penn and Teller. And I'm a huge Penn and Teller fan. I saw Penn and Teller back in 1985 at the Refrigerator Tour. I think it was my first ever Broadway show. Had that poster hanging on my wall forever. And the show is great.
52:03Jason Mantzoukas:Like, if you are in Vegas, they're touring the UK, I think, maybe even now. Like, just find them. They're great. And the show is as funny and as inventive and fresh. Like, it's funny i think like oh you know the maybe it's not maybe it's just like a memory of something good and you look and i'm like oh teller is 78 years old right they've been doing this for 50 fucking years oh it's so good but one of the things i found i was talking to them backstage and we were having a conversation but then uh someone mentioned that morgan neville is making a documentary of them and he and he just made the lauren documentary which i thought was yeah oh i still haven't watched that oh that's great i gotta watch it yeah i think because i just listened to the audiobook i was like i'm gonna give it a minute i i have digested a lot of behind the scenes of snl and the you know i guess leading up to the snl 50 uh and i found his take to be refreshingly different and it was nice because i was like oh i was like oh my like i kind of dragging my feet on watching it's like i don't want to watch this i don't know and then i was like oh it's it's uniquely his i think that that's one of the things that's so good but i'm actually really excited to know that he is doing a pen and teller thing as well because i feel like that would be something really interesting and i can say that out loud because pen did say that on his podcast well and i'm like i i'm so curious to watch it both because i'm a fan of pen and teller But also, like, I'm such a fan of or I'm so curious to gain access to long-term creative partnerships.
53:42Yes. Penn and Teller have been a duo for 50 years, maybe more.
53:47Jason Mantzoukas:No, 50 years. You know what I mean? 51 years or something like that. Something crazy like that. And that is astonishing. You know, that is really incredible. One of their secrets of success, apparently, is that they don't really socialize. They perform together. But I also think, you know, again, I've watched them now for a majority of my life. Yeah. And I'm like, they still have this like kind of, I think they're very different people, but they have fun together. Performing night after night after night after night after night. And one does not speak, but their show is great. I mean, I love that show, Fool Us.
54:20Jason Mantzoukas:Have you ever seen that? Oh, it's so good. Yeah. I just, it was just really, what a treat it was. and was the show that you saw like a new show that they are doing or is this something they've been doing for a while they're in the pennanteller theater at the rio so that's their theater they have their residency in las vegas so they are oftentimes there but then they had just gotten back from australia they're going to the uk so they're in and out but the thing that was interesting was uh and talking to them as well and they say it on stage they're putting new stuff in like they did a trick for the second time the night that i was there like a brand new trick that was awesome and you know so they i feel like they are it's fresh and they were saying that you know one of the things that people think is like oh i'm gonna go see pen and teller it's gonna be a rehash of their greatest bits and it's not it's like oh yeah they're still doing a new show and i think that that's why if you talk about partnerships too it's like oh they're just like they have the thing they are successful they can still try something i think that that energy is what makes the show good it's not like oh i'm doing the same hacky you're not hacky i'm just doing the same thing i know how to do it's like they're challenging themselves you know to great effect and like they were saying like oh and sometimes it doesn't work yeah but uh pen and i have talked a lot about bob dylan and the one thing that he was telling me about and i've never i've never fully seen did you ever see that bob dylan joan baez movie no have you heard about this see it all right so this is a a movie that is a four hour movie called ronaldo and clara and it's just directed and starring bob dylan and it's it's basically like this experimental film where it's like it's like improvised vignettes going on in it and it's like characters are switching roles yeah i was like this is amazing and there's a lot of like you can find a lot of it on youtube and i was watching a bunch of people hate it uh you know but it but i think well i feel like dylan's cinematic work is always super bizarre yes you know um like i feel like larry charles talked about it on that book when we when we had him on um yeah like crazy like i think dylan is a real nut in that regard in a great way yeah oh i gotta check that out yeah so like i'm trying to find more and more clips of it but i was gonna say if you if you know uh where there's a more of a definitive you know version let let us know because i i'm kind of curious and like i know that some of the original negatives have been destroyed and a lot of it like um martin scorsese like restored for a rolling thunder review like which was like you know um but that's more of the tour footage i'm more interested in like i'm like i want to see the acting i want to see the the crazy stuff that they're doing um all right well great uh so let us know where we can find that and uh jason always a pleasure see you next time remember if you want to check out any of the stuff that jason and i recommended uh we will always include a full list in the episode notes now yeah you know where we're at it's the end of the show which means it's finally time to announce our next movie next week we'll be going from putter asking for a diaphragm to jack aging quickly into a man see rhymes uh that's right we are watching the 1996 dramedy jack starring robin williams jennifer Lopez, Diane Lane, and Fran Drescher.
57:43Jason Mantzoukas:Will this movie make me cry? I guarantee it will. I don't know why, but I guarantee it will. Will it be a good movie? No, but I will cry in it. Robin Williams will make me cry. And by the way, believe it or not, Jack, also directed by Francis Ford Coppola. So you can watch your documentary about Megopolis. Why am I saying it like that? Megalop, Megalopolis. Oh, wow. I'm too tired, guys. I've been up all day. Of course I've been up all day. That's what most people are. Anyway, uh, and friends where Coppola, where am I? All right. Um, here's what IMDB says about Jack because of the unusual disorder that has aged him four times faster than a typical human being.
58:24Jason Mantzoukas:A boy looks like a 40 year old man as he starts fifth grade at public school after being homeschooled. Woof. Yeah, I'm going to cry. Rotten Tomatoes gives this film a 17 % score on the tomato meter. And Brandon Collins from Medium Popcorn says, Who's this movie for? Because the first 10 minutes alone are harrowing. I was terrified. Oh, Brandon, it seems like this movie is perfect for us. Let's take a listen to the trailer. He's a normal kid. I'm telling you, he's our age, but he looks 40. He just ages four times faster. So I'm big for my age. And he's the biggest thing that ever hit the fifth grade.
59:01Two words. Pen out. And four. We have liftoff. I have the pen out. Hollywood Pictures presents Robin Williams. I had a scary dream. Can I sleep in here? Of course not. As the kid in all of us.
59:14Jason Mantzoukas:Jack rated PG-13. You can stream Jack for free on Disney Plus if you have it, or you can rent it at all the usual places that you would rent movies. All right, everybody.
