Key claims
Reviews don’t impact Apple/Spotify SEO rankings (social proof only). Retention rate (percent of episode completed) is the best metric; below ~65–70% needs fixes. Low retention prevents listeners from hearing the call to action.
Notable examples
Vague title “Overcoming Fear” vs specific “Overcome fear of charging premium prices.” Rambling 3-minute intros with bios/Patreon/ads. Open loops via stating 3 benefits; hook via question or bold promise.

The show helping coaches, consultants, and experts turn your slow-growth podcast into a profitable client attraction system. At the end of this episode, I'll share a little more about who I am and what we do at my company, GetMoreListeners.com. It might even shock you. But for now, let's dive into the episode. In this episode, you'll discover what user engagement really is, the five mistakes most online coaches with podcasts make that repel listeners from finishing episodes, and simple strategies you can implement today to dramatically increase your listen time.
0:52Over the last few episodes, we've been focusing on podcast SEO, one of the main reasons most online coaches with podcasts struggle to attract clients consistently. Here's what we've covered so far. Discoverability Having the right keywords in your titles so you rank on Apple and Spotify for what your ideal clients are searching for Visibility Packaging your podcast attractively with professional cover art, compelling titles, and show notes that sell the listen User engagement Today's focus Increasing listen time so Apple and Spotify know your podcast is highly relevant High relevance Building authority and dominating your niche We'll cover this in a future episode.
1:36Today is all about user engagement, specifically retention time. As usual, let's clear up what user engagement is not. It's not about social media engagement. It's not about how many reviews you have on Apple Podcasts. By the way, reviews don't actually impact your podcast SEO rankings at all. They don't boost your show on the back end. At least, that's what Apple and Spotify say. What reviews do provide is social proof. They help convert someone on the fence into an active listener. Should you care about reviews? Yes. Should you be obsessed? Absolutely not. Honestly, 15 solid reviews is enough to build credibility.
2:16So, what is user engagement? User engagement is all about how long listeners stay tuned to your podcast. This is called retention time. The percentage of your episode that the average listener completes. If your podcast is 60 minutes long and the average listener only makes it through 30 minutes, your retention rate is 50%. Think about it from Apple and Spotify's perspective. Their main job is to keep users engaged on their platform. If your podcast has low retention, let's say under 60%, it sends a bad signal. It tells Apple and Spotify, this podcast isn't actually that relevant for this keyword.
2:56As a result, they suppress your reach. they're far less likely to recommend your show to new listeners. Why would they? Their objective is to keep people listening. If your show doesn't do that, they're not incentivized to promote it. Here's the hard truth. You can conduct all the keyword research in the world. You can have the most compelling episode titles. You can package your show beautifully with professional cover art and irresistible show notes. But if listeners aren't staying for the majority of the episode, it won't work. You need the whole package. And honestly, retention time is probably the best metric for how well you're delivering on the promise of your title.
3:34If you're thinking, I'm not sure if I need to worry about this, I get great feedback from listeners who say they love my podcast. I'm not here to burst your bubble, but numbers don't lie. The best place to check your retention time is Apple Podcasts Connect or Spotify for podcasters. You can Google these platforms and log in to see your analytics. Go check right now. Be objective. If your retention time is below 65 to 70%, you need to figure out why. There could be multiple reasons, and fixing this could unlock faster growth and higher client conversion. Because here's the reality. If people aren't sticking around to the end of your episodes, they're not hearing your call to action.
4:15They're not booking calls with you. Let me go over these five most common mistakes I see that repel new listeners. Don't get defensive if you fall into one of these categories. I'm going to give you a framework to fix it. Mistake number one. Fluff and tangents. I'm sure your content is amazing. Seriously, it's rare to find online coaches who don't create valuable content. But here's the issue. When it comes to podcast SEO and increasing engagement, you have to appeal to new listeners, people who don't know you yet. New listeners don't care about your random stories, tangents, or inside jokes with your community.
4:55They came for a specific solution to a specific problem. If you go off on too many tangents and talk about fluffy things that don't deliver on your title's promise, people tune out. Attention spans are shrinking every day. Your content needs to be action-packed and consistently deliver the value you promised in your title. Mistake number two. Vague or random titles. You might be thinking, what does my title have to do with retention? Here's the connection. If your title isn't clear and specific about what the listener will gain, people click based on curiosity, but they have their own subjective expectations.
5:34When the content inevitably doesn't match what they expected, they click off. Let's say you're a mindset coach and your title is Episode 23, Overcoming Fear. That's vague. Someone might click thinking it's about fear of public speaking, but you're actually talking about fear of failure in business. Mismatch. They leave. Better title? How to overcome fear of charging premium prices, even if you feel like a fraud. Now the listener knows exactly what they're getting. When you deliver on that specific promise, they stick around. Mistake number three. Long, rambling intros. This one kills retention faster than anything else.
6:19Imagine this. A potential client discovers your podcast. They love the cover art. The title hooked them. The show notes sold them. They hit play, excited to learn. Then the first three minutes is you talking about your week, giving backstory, introducing the guest with a long bio, promoting your Patreon, running ads, and finally getting to the content. They're gone. New listeners owe you nothing. You owe them everything. Don't spend three minutes introducing the topic. Dive straight in. Give them a reason to stick around within the first 30 to 60 seconds. Mistake number four, bad audio quality.
7:00I'm not going to spend much time on this because if you're listening to this podcast, I'm confident your audio quality is solid. But if you're recording on your laptop mic in a giant echoey room, fix it. Upgrade your mic. Record in a smaller space. Use a dynamic mic. Look into post-production editing. Bad audio quality sends the message, amateur, and people won't stick around. Mistake number five, slow pacing and boring delivery. This is about the quality and energy of your content itself. If your pacing is slow, your energy is flat, or you're not drawing the best out of yourself or your guest, people disengage.
7:41Think about it. You're in someone's ear right now. You need to create content that's action-packed, well-paced, and keeps people engaged. If you sound bored, they'll be bored. If you sound excited and confident, they'll stay tuned. How to fix your retention time. Here's the simple, actionable solution. Step 1. Deliver on your title's promise. When someone clicks your episode based on the title and show notes, it's your job to deliver exactly what you promised. No fluff, no tangents, just pure value. If your title says, how to sign your first high-ticket client in 30 days, every minute of that episode should focus on that outcome.
8:26Let's say you're a health coach and your title is, three gut health mistakes sabotaging your energy. Don't spend 15 minutes talking about your morning routine. Get straight into the three mistakes and how to fix them. Deliver on your promise. Stay focused. Pack it with value. Step two, nail your first 30 to 60 seconds. The opening of your podcast is everything. This is where you sell the listen. Use a strong hook to grab attention. You can do this in two ways. Option one, ask a powerful question. Have you ever wondered why your podcast gets downloads but never converts into client calls? Option two, make a bold promise.
9:14By the end of this episode, you'll know the exact three-step system to turn your podcast into a client magnet without spending a dime on ads. An easy hack? Simply state the title of your episode at the start. This signals to new listeners, you're in the right place. I'm about to deliver exactly what you came for. Step three, use open loops. This is a psychological trick that keeps people listening all the way through. At the start of your episode, tell listeners the three main benefits they'll gain by sticking around. Focus on what, why, and how. Example. In this episode, you'll discover what podcast SEO actually is, why it's critical for attracting high-ticket clients, and three things you can implement today to rank higher on Apple and Spotify.
10:09Now you've opened a loop. The listener has an innate psychological need to close that loop, which means they'll stick around to the end. Humans hate unfinished stories. Use that to your advantage. Step 4. Ask yourself, what are the three biggest takeaways? After you finish recording, whether solo or with a guest, ask yourself, What are the three biggest takeaways my ideal client would absolutely love from this episode? Then make sure you communicate those benefits at the start. Build intrigue. Be specific. Say it with confidence and conviction. That energy will transfer into longer retention time and more booked calls.
10:57When you fix your retention time, you don't just rank higher on Apple and Spotify. you convert more listeners into paying clients because they're actually hearing your offers, your calls to action, and your positioning as an authority. In this episode, we covered what user engagement really is, the five mistakes most online coaches with podcasts make that repel listeners from finishing episodes, and simple strategies you can implement today to dramatically increase your listen time.
