In short
Why online coaches’ podcasts stall despite consistency, and the five “growth foundations” needed to attract high-ticket clients: targeting, format, content strategy, podcast SEO, and a unique selling point (USP).
Key claims
growth isn’t fixed by more guesting/cross-promo/social posting; weak foundations prevent tactics from working. Targeting requires a specific problem solved (example: fathers managing time to prioritize fitness). Format includes macro cadence (two episodes/week suggested) plus micro hook (first 60–90 seconds), segments, and matching style to audience. Content strategy means demand-based episodes that don’t rely on high-profile guests (example: vegan influencer episode won’t retain bodybuilder injury-prevention listeners). Podcast SEO covers discoverability/visibility/engagement/relevance. USP example: daily podcast for women over 50 where listeners submit sales calls for 10–15 minute objection breakdowns.

Welcome to How to Grow a Podcast that attracts high-ticket online coaching clients. The show helping coaches, consultants, and experts turn your slow-growth podcast into a profitable client attraction system. At the end of this episode, I'll share a little more about who I am and what we do at my company, GetMoreListeners.com. It might even shock you, but for now, let's dive into the episode. In this episode, you'll discover why most online coaches with podcasts struggle to grow despite consistent effort, how most are papering over the cracks with tactics that don't address the root problem, and the five foundational factors every podcast needs to gain traction fast and attract high-ticket clients.
0:55Here's what I see all the time. Online coaches with incredible shows who are working hard, staying consistent, hosting amazing interviews, and landing high-profile guests. But they're still stuck with slow, frustrating growth. And here's the thing. It's never about the strategies or tactics. It's not about guesting on more podcasts, doing more cross-promotions, or posting more on social media. The likelihood is you're already doing all of those things. You're already hosting great interviews. you're already sharing actionable advice. So why isn't your podcast attracting clients? Why aren't you growing as fast as you need to?
1:33It always comes down to the foundations. The podcast is built on a rocky foundation. And when your foundation isn't solid, no amount of tactics will fix the problem. You can promote all day, land the biggest guests in your industry, and still struggle. Because the core structure of your show isn't optimized to attract, engage, and retain ideal clients. So today, we're going to break down the five foundational aspects that determine whether your podcast becomes a client magnet or stays stuck in slow growth mode. Here are the five foundational aspects we're talking about. Targeting, format, content strategy, podcast SEO, unique selling point, USP.
2:16If you've been listening to previous episodes, then you may already have started to fix these. Scratch that. If you've been listening to previous episodes, I sure hope you've taken action to fix these. But even if you're new to this podcast and hearing these things for the first time, you'll certainly notice none of these are about social media, ad spend, or fancy tactics. That's intentional. Because if your foundations aren't set, those tactics won't work anyway. Let's unpack each one. Foundation number one, targeting. Targeting comes down to three critical questions. Who is your show for? What topics do you cover?
2:53What specific problem are you helping your listeners solve? Most online coaches with podcasts can answer the first two questions. They know their show is for entrepreneurs or women in business or fitness enthusiasts. They know they cover topics like mindset, productivity, or health. But here's where it falls apart. They don't have a clear answer to the third question. What specific problem are you solving? And how are you solving it? Example. Let's say you have a podcast for fathers. Great. What topic? Fatherhood. Okay, but that's still too broad. Now add the third layer. What problem are you solving?
3:31Let's say your podcast helps fathers manage their time so they can prioritize fitness. Now you're specific. Now you have direction. Now you know exactly what content to create, what guests to invite, and what pain points to address. That's targeting. When your targeting is tight, your content becomes a magnet for the exact clients you want to work with. Foundation number two, format. Format is the overall structure of your show, both at the macro level, how often you release episodes, and the micro level, how each episode is structured. Macro, weekly output. By default, most podcasters release one episode per week.
4:13But here's what we found. Two episodes per week puts you ahead of the competition. It gives you an extra touchpoint with your audience. It keeps you top of mind. It makes it easier for listeners to cement a habit around your show. Now, there's no hard rule here. Some audiences prefer once a week. Some prefer more. The key is to look at your listeners' consuming habits and adjust accordingly. Don't guess. Micro. Episode structure. Within each episode, there are three main elements to consider. One, your hook. The first 60 to 90 seconds of your podcast need to be intriguing and irresistible. Without a strong hook, new listeners will discover your show and immediately leave.
4:55Your hook needs to answer, what's in it for them? Why should they stick around for 30 to 40 minutes? 2. Segments How are you breaking up your episode to keep people engaged? We all know attention spans are shrinking. Even podcast listeners, who tend to have longer attention spans because they're at the gym or commuting, need variety. You can't just ramble or go off on random tangents. You need to constantly be thinking, what's in it for the listener? 3. Style Is your show story-based, actionable, conversational? Different styles work for different niches. For example, if you're a business coach and your audience wants tactical, implementable strategies, a long-form storytelling style might not resonate.
5:44But if you're a life coach and your audience loves transformation stories, that style could be perfect. The pitfall? A mismatch between your style and your audience's consumption habits. Fix that and engagement skyrockets. Foundation number three, content strategy. Every podcast produces content, but not every podcast has a content strategy. Here's the difference. Content is what you create. Interviews, solo episodes, stories, advice. Content strategy is intentionally releasing specific episodes based on demand. Instead of creating content and hoping listeners will come, you find out what listeners are already searching for and create content to match that demand.
6:32The goal of a content strategy is to attract, engage, and retain new listeners without relying on high-profile guests. When you constantly rely on guests to bring growth, it's not sustainable. Here's what happens. You interview a high-profile vegan influencer. Their audience comes. That episode gets 1 ,000 downloads. Huge win, right? But your next episode is about injury prevention for bodybuilders. The vegan audience checks out your other content, realizes it's not for them, and leaves. They never come back. That's not a content strategy. That's a one-hit wonder. A content strategy ensures that every episode connects.
7:18When someone discovers your show, they binge multiple episodes because everything is relevant to them. That's how you build a loyal audience that converts into paying clients. Foundation number four, podcast SEO This has nothing to do with blogs, websites, or Google. Here's what podcast SEO actually is. Millions of people listen to podcasts daily on Apple and Spotify. The majority of them discover new shows by typing in what they're looking for, just like Googling, but on Apple and Spotify. Imagine how much easier it would be to grow your podcast if you could put your show in front of people who are actively searching for what you offer, instead of trying to convince distracted social media scrollers to give you a chance.
8:09The four components of podcast SEO. One, discoverability. This is about having the right keywords in your episode titles, show name, and descriptions. If someone searches mindset coaching for entrepreneurs, and you don't have those terms anywhere in your podcast, you'll never be found. 2. Visibility It's one thing to rank on page one, but you're competing with nine other shows. How do you stand out? You need a professional, high-quality cover that implies a premium product inside. Irresistible episode titles that clearly communicate value and intrigue listeners. 3. User engagement Apple and Spotify track how long people listen to your episodes.
8:59If your retention rate is 50%, meaning people drop off halfway through, you're not going to rank high no matter how good your keywords are. You need to optimize retention to reap the full benefits of podcast SEO. Four, high relevance. This is about becoming an authority in your niche. When someone thinks of high-ticket sales for coaches, your podcast should be the one that comes to mind. You build relevance by consistently covering your core topic, including your main keywords in every episode title, and dominating that niche over time. When you nail all four components, your podcast grows on autopilot.
9:44You're going with the tide, not fighting against it. Foundation 5. Unique Selling Point. USP. Most online coaches with podcasts have incredible content, but they're missing a USP. Something that makes their show objectively different from every other podcast in their niche. Here's the formula. Weekly output plus specific targeting times. Unique concept. Breaking it down. Weekly output. A daily show is significantly different from a weekly show. There are far fewer daily shows, so you instantly stand out. Specific targeting. The more specific, the better. Women over 50 in the coaching industry is way more specific than entrepreneurs.
10:36Unique concept. This is the mechanism you use to deliver your content. How you present your show in a way no one else does. Example. Generic podcast. A weekly interview show for business coaches. USP-driven podcast. A daily podcast for women over 50 in the coaching industry where listeners send in their sales call recordings and the host breaks down how they could have handled objections better in 10 - to 15-minute episodes. See the difference? The second one is objectively unique. There's no other show like it. That's what makes it impossible to ignore. Have fun with this experiment make it silly make it bold The more unique your show the easier it is to stand out gain traction and keep listeners coming back because there's literally no competition Again, here are the five growth foundations Targeting get crystal clear on who you serve what you cover and what problem you solve Format Optimize your release schedule and episode structure for engagement Content Strategy Create demand-based content that attracts, engages, and retains ideal clients Podcast SEO Rank on Apple and Spotify so clients find you when they're actively searching USP Stand out with a unique concept that's objectively different from the competition When these five foundations are in place, growth happens naturally.
12:20We've seen podcasts triple their monthly downloads within 60 days, without touching social media, without landing bigger guests, without doing cross-promotions. I can't say this any simpler. Fix the foundations first. Then apply tactics.
