0:00Your show notes aren't converting strangers into listeners, and you're leaving growth on the table every single episode. Welcome to How to Grow a Podcast that attracts high-ticket online coaching clients. The show helping coaches, consultants, and experts turn your slow-growth podcast into a profitable client attraction system. At the end of this episode, I'll share a little more about who I am and what we do at my company, GetMoreListeners.com. It might even shock you. But for now, let's dive into the episode. In today's episode, you'll discover how to write killer show descriptions that turn strangers into listeners in five minutes or less.

0:41Why AI tools alone won't sell the listen. And finally, the four-part framework for show notes that actually convert. Let's dive in. Welcome back to another episode where we give you a jam-packed, step-by-step guide to getting more growth and monetization from your podcast efficiently. Look, today we're going to be talking all about show notes. So show notes is an area that of course every single podcaster has to include as part of their show. A show description essentially explaining what the podcast episode is all about. In our time really working with clients as well as speaking to podcasters in the community, we know that show notes is something that doesn't really...

1:24I feel like there's mixed opinions. Number one, it doesn't get spoken about as much from podcast growth gurus because it's not sexy. It's not like social media this or land your dream guest. It is the area that every podcaster needs but doesn't get the attention that it actually requires. So I guess let's blast off with why show notes are so important. Yeah, you're right. I think they're probably quite misunderstood. I think some people probably put over-importance on them and think they're really impactful for SEO, and you need a transcript in there and a bunch of stuff like that. Some people are the opposite and just don't pay any attention to it.

2:05And really, the answer is somewhere in the middle. If you listen to any of our other episodes about podcast SEO, you'll know that it's really like episode titles, show title, things like that. However, show notes over time, compounded with every episode, it does make a difference. So it is important to get them right. And not only for SEO purposes, but also just really selling the listen. 100%. So it is important we get them right. Now, a lot of people will automate their show notes with softwares like Descript. I feel like I'm just calling them out now. I definitely think you're throwing shots at Descript, but that's the main one that comes to mind.

2:48But look, there's a bunch of stuff like that. There's tons of them. And of course, Descript is an AI tool that people use for show notes, summary, transcripts, and all that good stuff. For sure. And these tools, they're obviously really powerful because they can take your raw audio file and turn it into a bunch of different assets, which is really cool. But does it sell the listen? When you say sell the listen, our approach has always been when it comes to show notes, it's really important that you sell the listen. The goal of the show notes isn't to necessarily provide a ton of information about the particular episode.

3:25It's about to convince a total stranger to click and listen and pay attention to the episode. It's a bit of a different, I think that's the mindset shift that I think is important to note when we're going into this. Yeah, that's a really good point. So our North Star for show notes and the whole point of this episode, the goal of it, is to help you be able to better sell the listen and convince a total stranger to listen just upon reading the show notes. And that brings us to our point. So that's why AI tools that are out there to automate that stuff, in our opinion, they're not really building towards that goal.

4:01Like again, they can save you a bunch of time, but they're very informative, very descriptive, but not necessarily persuasive to sell the listen. So again, they're great if you're already a raving fan of the show, or if you know the guest, because it'll give you a whole big story about the guest and all this kind of stuff, the credentials. It nails that stuff. So would you say that's one of the mistakes we see when it comes to show notes? Relying too heavily on AI tools to just do the show notes for you, without editing it yourself, without putting that through a framework. Would you say that's one of the mistakes that people make?

4:37Practically yes, but fundamentally no. And I think I'm trying to be really big and clever with that, but I think there's nothing actually wrong with using AI to automate your show notes. But it's misguided because the output is too informative and doesn't focus on selling the listen. So for that reason, yes, if you're using an AI tool, I would say it's a mistake. But not because it's AI, just because the output you're getting doesn't sell the listen. and that's actually what we're going to be helping you with today. That does make sense. Cool. Well, and then what would you say the second mistake is?

5:12So the second one I'll say is honestly not having a clear hook at the start of your actual show notes. I think that's an easy one people miss and it's an easy one to fix as well. So if you're listening to this right now, do you have an attention-grabbing hook at the start of your show notes to grab the attention of the listener, to call out who you're trying to reach for that particular episode and to bring them into your world. That's the second mistake that I see. And to really hammer that home, give us an example. So for this episode, what would be a good hook that would get someone to listen even if they've never heard of us before?

5:50Something like how to turn total strangers online into listeners of your podcast by using chat GPT to create killer show notes. Something like that. And why would that convince someone that doesn't know us to listen instead of us just being really informative? Because it's positioning it as a value prop for them. Is this something that you're looking for? I think probably a better one would be how to write killer show descriptions that turn strangers online into listeners in five minutes or less. That's better. Nice. I love that. So look, without further ado, let's actually get into that and deliver on that exact promise, which is what we're here for.

6:31Let's do it. So again, to recap, AI tools, you can automate this elsewhere. What we found is we wanted to make it our own and really follow the format that we found is best for selling the listen. And that is the AIDA copywriting framework. In 30 seconds or less, I'll do it in 15. So AIDA is a copywriting framework that's been around forever. AIDA stands for attention. So grab the attention with a hook. Interest, build some interest around the topic. Desire, build a desire for someone to engage with the content. And then action, get them to take an action. So A-I-D-A, that's it. Attention, interest, desire, action.

7:19Very good. Perfect. So how do we actually use that with ChatGPT? Well, what we've done is devised a prompt with ChatGPT that essentially takes podcast transcripts and runs it through the AIDA framework to get a concise and effective output really on the first go. So essentially in one click once you've got this set up. And how that would work is the ChatGPT, it would take the prompt, which of course we're going to give you, It takes a transcript, it reads through the transcript, and it chooses, based on what's said, a hook question. So, for example, how to write killer show notes in one click in five minutes or less.

7:58And then the interest part, we actually have to elaborate on this a little bit. Not too much. We're not trying to give the whole story of the guest or anything crazy like that. Literally just tell the listener or the reader why this topic matters to them and their situation right now. That urgency matters because if it's not urgent right now and people don't care, they click off. It needs to be something that's urgent to a lot of people most of the time. I know if I see something that's not relevant to me, it's ignored. Exactly. So it's not only talking about the topic, it's talking about the topic and why it matters to that person and their current situation right now.

8:37And this can be done in two sentences or less. Something like, show notes are an overlooked part of the podcasting process to many, but over time compounded, they can actually bring great SEO benefits and really turn tons of strangers looking at your show into regular listeners. But as a busy podcaster and business owner, you don't need one extra thing on your plate as part of your weekly process. And there we go. That's the interest. And now that brings us very nicely into the desire part. Now, this is personally my favorite part. This is something we encourage our clients to do in their intros as well, and the principle works the same.

9:17Rather than just talking about, oh, we're going to be talking about show notes today, we actually want to tell listeners or readers specifically the benefits they're going to gain from that particular episode. So, for ours right now, it might be something like, why most people are going wrong with AI show note automating tools, And that's a benefit you're going to gain from listening to this. And that might persuade you to listen, because hopefully it plays on your intrigue, and you think, well, I thought those were a good thing. Why are most people going wrong? So hopefully it would incentivize you to listen.

9:52Another one might be steal our four-part framework for turning strangers online into active listeners of your podcast. And finally, a simple prompt to automate your show notes. Perfect. There we go. Now, again, hopefully, if you're listening right now and you haven't actually read the show notes, if you read this, that would only fuel your desire to really find out what we have to say. If not, then of course, we're completely misguided. But for most people, these are things that are relevant to our audience and their current situation, so it would incentivize them to click. And then finally, we wrap up.

10:28So we've grabbed the attention with the hook question. We've briefly shown why this topic is relevant now and to you specifically. We've given you three benefits you're going to get and be able to apply by listening. And then finally we want to wrap it up with the call to action, which is our action part of the framework. Give me an example. So if you are ready to discover a totally new way to transform your show notes to turn strangers into active listeners that sell the listen for your podcast, scroll up and click play. But look, all that stuff is good. I love it. And the framework is super important to understand.

11:06So if you're listening right now, you understand why this works so well. But of course, you have to go out and experiment. See if you actually like it. See if it's something that you think is going to add value to you. And you can compare it to Descript or the current AI tools that you're currently using. It doesn't have to be super long or super drawn out. It just needs to sell the listen. If that means an essay, which I wouldn't encourage, then great. But most of the time, it's going to be actually just a short, concise piece of copy that sells the benefits, that grabs attention, builds interest, builds more desire, and gives a benefit-driven call to action for the listener.

11:47So what we've done for you, we've done all this work. We've gone through blood, sweat, and tears to get the perfect AI prompt for you. We went to battle with ChatGPT because ChatGPT kept messing us up. Every time we tried to get it perfect, we had to fine-tune it again and again. But we finally got to it. And what should you do? You should scroll down and you should find the exact prompt that we've shared with you that really was devised over blood, sweat, and tears. And what you can do, you can go and plug that in yourself, even if you just have the free version of ChatGPT. And all you need to do is give it that prompt and then below provide it a transcript from your episode.

12:34Perfect. And look, that's your call to action for today. Use the prompt, test it out, and compare it to current show notes. I promise it's a night and day difference. I've got to say, not to be a downer, but if you are a business owner and you're listening to this right now, you should be using ChatGPT4. It's definitely worth it for the most part. It's helped us out tremendously. So the prompt output definitely is better with ChatGPT4. Again, just a little caveat, but it still works with ChatGPT3 if that's what you have. So look, thanks for listening. If you enjoyed this episode, we're sure you'll love our others, and we upload regularly.

13:17so be sure to hit the follow button to make sure you don't miss the next one. Thank you for listening all the way to the end.
