In short

Hospitality “one size fits all” vs tailoring service to guests’ needs, with examples from restaurants, business meetings, first dates, and hotels.

Guests

No named guests appear in the transcript; the host discusses principles and references Richard Corain (the “one size fits one” idea).

Key claims

Great hospitality means reading the individual and “meeting them where they’re at,” providing the right level of information and attention; too much detail can overwhelm business diners, while too little support can fail in tense social situations.

Notable examples

Sending a passionate sommelier for curious diners; “shutting up” and getting out of the way for business meetings; giving space to couples fighting; offering minimal, restful service to exhausted hotel guests arriving at 1 a.m.

0:00Yes, yes, people. So the hungry reading list is here, right? If you listen to the podcast regularly, you know I love reading. I think books are the most beautiful thing in the world. As Stephen King said, they're teleportable magic or something like that. these books i whittled down my gargantuan bookshelf into 46 absolute 30 bangers the link is in the show notes to get the list whatever and it'll also make you a subscriber to our weekly newsletter which i think is sick so yeah get your fucking books buddy they have the best of intentions and yet their hospitality happens to people not for them if you're in the restaurant yeah we've only known each other for so long yeah my instinct is you're going to want to know a lot about each course and each wine.

0:48You're a relentlessly curious person. I'm going to make sure that I send over the sommelier who is really passionate to be like, alright, dude, this wine was grown by this third generation winemaker who has an ingrown toenail and da-da-da-da-da-da-da, whatever. For some, that's like great hospitality. They're curious. They want to know everything. For the guys in a business meeting, don't go over and give them all the information. They're not there for it. They're there to have a business meeting and they just want it in a beautiful room that serves delicious food. And they want you to be friendly and attentive and then get out of the way.

1:26Similarly, a first date that is not going well. Okay, get in there. Help get it back on track. On the flip side, a couple that's clearly having a fight. Give them space. don't make the woman wipe her tears off to not be embarrassed when you come over to give them a bunch of stuff they don't need to hear about. It's about reading an individual and allowing them to feel seen. And feeling seen is them knowing where you're at such that they can meet you there. Knowing where you're at. Okay, so go, yeah, tell me a bit more about that. well I mean it's what I'm saying the meet you up bit oh metaphorically like meeting someone in a business meeting is shutting up like just getting out of their way and this applies to so many different I mean I go to a hotel there are times when I want like the enthusiastic greeting the rundown the understanding of when the gym is open.

2:40There's the times I get to a hotel at one in the morning and I'm clearly just exhausted. And I'd love for them to just give me my room key and say goodnight. Same person, two different times, different needs, different wants.

2:58So is it Richard Corain, the one size fits one? Yes. I think that's basically what we're talking about here. What I loved, I listened to it somewhere, where it's like one size fits one, one size fits some, one size fits many. Size fits all. Sorry, size fits all. Detail that, because I think that's applicable. Because again, to your point, if you're going to everyone and giving them, there's only so much energy for unreasonable hospitality for one person. I think it's a really nice triangle almost or pyramid. It's a hierarchy. It's a hierarchy of how that works. Well, one size fits all we talked about with the check and the cognac.
