In short
The episode argues that Republicans, led by Donald Trump, are threatening or pressuring MAGA leaders and are responsible for major unpopularity and policy harm, especially a budget/health-care bill that will raise costs and cut coverage; it also pivots to Epstein file non-release and Trump’s alleged personal involvement, plus discussion of Trump’s credibility and possible 25th Amendment talk.
Guest backgrounds
Rep. Brennan Boyle (Pennsylvania), Democratic House Budget Committee Ranking Member.
Key claims
The bill is described as the most unpopular major legislation in U.S. history; 15 million lose health care (10m Medicaid cuts, 5m ACA exchange losses) and tens of millions face double-digit premium increases; it adds “trillions” to national debt. Republicans allegedly fear Trump more than constituents. Epstein files would be released if nothing damaging existed; committee chairs could subpoena them.
Notable examples
Pennsylvania swing voters citing high costs; rural hospital closures in Oklahoma; Trump cheating/affairs claims; alleged Epstein party with only Trump and Epstein as male guests; Trump lies about egg prices and gas.

Welcome, Congressman Boyle. Yeah, great to be back with you. Okay, so I have to ask you, how toxic on a scale of one to 10 is your workplace? It would definitely be one of the more toxic places. But, But, you know, that said, though, I feel pretty energized by what's going on. I mean, the Republicans just passed, and this is not an exaggeration, by the numbers, the single most unpopular major piece of legislation of our lifetime. So I feel really blessed to be in a position to help lead the fight on our side to inform people that 15 million people are going to lose their health care.
0:52Tens of millions more are going to see dramatic premium rises. And those are going to start pretty quickly. And let's all, make no mistake about it, a result of the bill that they just passed. And why, in order to subsidize tax cuts, they mostly go to the very rich. What I find interesting about that is when we're talking about the budget bill, which you have been a staunch supporter against, Mike Johnson, 40 % of his constituents are going to be affected by this bill. And now he's shutting down the government. So at what point do these Republican Trump acolytes, do they fear their constituency more than Donald Trump?
1:36Or does that ever happen? Yeah. By the way, Mike Johnson from Louisiana is from the state with the highest Medicaid population in the nation. But just to be clear, all of the health care losses that I referenced, over 15 million Americans will lose their health care. About 10 of that is due to the Medicaid cuts. Another 5 million who are currently on one of the ACA exchanges or Obamacare, they will also lose their health care. And again, tens of millions more will be paying far more double-digit increases in their health care costs as a result of this legislation. I know you and your co-host are in Oklahoma.
2:19That's one of the states that is about to suffer hospital closures. They will disproportionately impact rural areas. So to answer your question, though, this doesn't really seem to scare Republicans as much as Donald Trump scares them. And I think it will take next November and deep losses at the ballot box before they realize they really need to actually reckon with what they've done and the unpopularity of it. But for now, they just listened to Donald Trump. And even though all of them cry crocodile tears about deficit and debt, they just voted for a bill, in addition to the healthcare cuts, also adds trillions more to our national debt, the biggest increase in our national debt in American history, a result of this legislation.
3:07Well, it's interesting because I saw new polling out that Trump's underwater on all the issues you referenced, his bill is the single most unpopular piece of legislation. But where everybody coincides in terms of Trump's disapproval rating is on Epstein and not releasing the files. And correct me if I'm wrong, but Mike Johnson could subpoena those files today if he wanted to. Is that correct? Yeah, that's right. I mean, there are a number of committee chairs who have the power of subpoena and would be able to do that. And I have to say, I'm far from an expert on the Epstein matter. I just know that it's self-evident.
3:50This is really the monster that crazy Republican conspiracy theorists have created. They kept talking about the Epstein files and who's in there, who's on the list. Meanwhile, Donald Trump was hiding in plain sight. Right. How many different pictures have we now seen of Donald Trump with Jeffrey Epstein? Well, unfortunately, the media didn't fully report this matter really until the last couple of weeks, just how close they were. I mean, apparently there was once a party thrown and the only two male guests were Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein. I mean, this is, I have to say, while I was always skeptical of some of the Epstein conspiracies, the fact the other side always projects onto others what they themselves are guilty of is truly remarkable.
4:42And this is a great example of it. Well, what's interesting about the whole thing to me is like you said, he has been stoking the MAGA fire about Epstein for years. And now he's saying, oh, it has nothing to do with me. But going back to Ghislaine Maxwell, in her trial, public documents show Trump was on the plane. Trump was calling. Now we have, you know, an Epstein accuser that said, no, she reported Donald Trump to the FBI twice when she talked about Epstein. So all of these things are coming out. He had sex with a porn star when his wife was at home. He had an affair with the Playboy Bunny while his wife was at home, both times with the baby.
5:22So I don't know why this is so shocking to people, but to me, the cover up. So you have all of these documents. There is no list. There is a list. There is no list. There is a list. Are there rumors circulating in D.C. about the damage that this could do to Donald Trump personally? Or is that just, you know, everybody just assumes that? Yeah. So first, I just want to underscore one of the points you made. We already know it is a confirmed admitted fact. Donald Trump was off cheating on his third wife while she was home, having just given birth with their child. he was off with a porn star having sex with her and then paid her over a hundred thousand dollars to keep it quiet the real crime there of course is she was dramatically underpaid um so that is just one of the numerous things we know already confirmed in public so just imagine what we don't know there are a lot of rumors going on right now on capitol hill and i'll say this If there was nothing in those Epstein files, they would have been released already.
6:37They would have been released on the first day. There is a reason he is fighting so hard and against his own MAGA base, who for the first time actually seems to be somewhat breaking with him because they realize finally, after all of this time, they realize they've been conned. Right. Right. And does he have to get congressional approval to give aid to these farmers? Because now we're seeing all these bankruptcies in farms and tariffs. Foreign countries aren't buying farm products, USAID cuts. So does he have to get legislative approval to provide farm aid? It would depend on what shape or form the aid would take.
7:18He actually did that eight years ago when he initially had tariffs that were not nearly to this extent. So under existing law, there are some things he would be able to do. But of course, the easiest thing to do, and by far the most cost effective, is make it so that they're able to sell their goods and that they're not losing money. This is entirely a problem that Donald Trump and his policies have created. Look at how much goods have gone up at Amazon and Walmart. Right. You know, in my home state of Pennsylvania, which was actually the state that decided the election, I'm sorry to say, Donald Trump won by 1.7 percent, one of the closest margins in American history.
8:00I heard time and time again from swing voters in Pennsylvania, in my hometown of Philadelphia, who swung to Trump because they said, you know, Brendan, costs are just too high. I don't like the guy, but I think he'll get costs lower. Well, here we are six months later. Not only has he failed to get costs lower, he's actually directly responsible for why they've gone up even more over the last six months. That's entirely because of Donald Trump and his policies. What about when he says all this stuff like egg prices are down 200 percent and gas is only$1.99, which are blatant lies. Is there any talk of the 25th Amendment?
8:41Like I see him speak and I think he's completely oblivious to reality. He goes on Truth Social. He's totally unhinged. So what is it going to take to get a 25th Amendment? I mean, we can barely get people in the Republican Party to release the Epstein files. But I have to think the 25th Amendment with his mental decline and incompetence has got to have been discussed. Well, I mean, some of the things he says show clear signs of mental decline. I know every single day there was an article about Joe Biden's alleged decline. We don't see that same standard applied to Donald Trump. But I will say, though, most of the time, the remarkably untrue things he says, the lies he says, I don't attribute that to mental decline.
9:27I attribute to the fact the guy's a born liar. And almost every sentence he ever utters includes at least one or more lies. And the reality is he believes he can get away with it. He's actually openly talked about this previously in interviews before his political career, that part of his strategy is to just throw so much there to attempt to discredit the press and discredit others who would call him on his lies. One thing, though, that gives me reason for optimism is that, okay, for his mega base and the diehards and maybe people who just hate Democrats so much that they're fine to go along with whatever he's saying, they're probably not reachable.
10:12But for that swing voter in Pennsylvania and in other states who decides elections, they're able to see when they go to the supermarket, when they order something on Amazon, when they go to Walmart, they're able to see prices have gone up. And Trump won't be able to confuse them about that matter. Is there really such a thing as a swing voter anymore? I feel like we're so siloed. You believe there are, I mean, you've talked to them in Pennsylvania. Yeah. No, I can tell you that, I mean, I actually got the opportunity to observe a focus group of swing voters in Philadelphia in October of last year's election.
10:52These were younger, non-college educated males who had voted for Biden in 2020, had either voted for Trump in 2016 or not voted, and were undecided for 2024. And the reality is, as partisan as times may be and as entrenched as many people are, there still are swing voters. I mean, look, I'll take my district, for example. Take Northeast Philadelphia, the biggest part of my district, about 250 ,000 people. Donald Trump carried it by just over one percentage point. I carried the exact same area by 11 percentage points. So that's a sizable number of people who voted for Donald Trump and then right underneath his name voted for me.
11:38So those swing voters do exist. There are not as many of them as there used to be even 20 years ago, but they still exist. And in a state like mine, they're actually decisive. That's so interesting because you just wonder, are there really any out there? Congressman Boyle, thank you so much for joining us. please keep up the good fight and we'll check in with you when you get back in session in September because I have a feeling your workplace is only going to get more toxic. This is crazy town so I don't think it's going to get normal anytime soon so be happy to talk to you then. Thank you, bye-bye.
12:13Bye-bye.
