In short

A “Mythbusters Part 2” episode where the hosts re-create and discuss classic Mythbusters-style myths, then add their own “theory slams” and “slamifications.” Main segments include: whether a dropped penny can kill, whether a penny fired like a bullet can kill, whether yawning is contagious, and whether you can catch a bullet in your teeth.

Guests

No guests are featured. The episode is hosted by the “boys” (Alfie and others, including Jack) in a casual banter format.

Key claims and notable examples

  • Penny drop myth: A penny dropped from the Empire State Building (381m to the top floor; 443m including the spire) cannot kill; Mythbusters tests used terminal velocity (~64.4 mph) and ballistic gel skull dummies. The penny broke skin/gel but bounced and didn’t kill; catching it at speed only hurt, not cut.
  • Penny-fired myth: Even when fired at roughly bullet speeds (about 3x speed of sound), the penny bent/buckled rather than penetrating enough to kill.
  • Yawning contagious myth: Tests with isolated rooms and “yawning seed” setups found only small differences; the hosts debate whether it’s confirmed or merely a “theory slam.” They also discuss echo/empathy links.
  • Bullet catch myth: Mythbusters-style testing with acrylic dentures and a pendulum showed the teeth shattered; catching a bullet in teeth is treated as not feasible.

Any problems? Very well. The desk did actually work very well, but I left my window open once and it got soaked from there. It's not responsible. It's not responsible. The desk got wet of me. I'm responsible. Yeah. Very nice. Yeah. Her lyrics are shit. Hey. They just are. She's doing well. Yeah, she's doing incredibly. Doing very well. Doesn't mean the lyrics are good. Yeah. Sexist. Yeah. Rude. No, how are we? We're back again.

3:06SlamJar:It's the boys again. We're on a little run us three, aren't we? Yeah. On a little run. Are we? Yeah, if you read the Reddit, right, which I don't, right, but I'd imagine the Reddit's going to go, I've been reading that a lot lately. Have you? The banger after banger. Look, I've dipped back in. Toes in? Yeah, toes are in. knees I've replied to a few comments and stuff on there lovely it's been good lately no it's been really nice we've had some very positive feedback on the episode you know that never have I ever I wasn't too sure if people would like it they loved it there was a comment on the Spotify Spotify's had some well good comments as well what's happened there last week it said Alfie is unbearable to listen to at this point Spotify's had some really good comments about us and I thought the last episode we were recording I was going that was a bit unbearable what I just said then do you know what hurts?

3:54so you agree with it? well it's hard isn't it because I listen if I listen back to this pod sorry mate have I bored you? what the fuck are you doing?

4:01SlamJar:I just remembered I've got to get my ring I'm going to carry it out but you threw that over there last week last week when we recorded this that's unbearable do you see what I'm doing there? it's really unbearable like trying to point out the plot holes yeah that is annoying you should stop doing that stop doing that Should we look for after? But then how can you not be unbearable? We've hit record. You have to talk. Well, to be fair, you're not shutting up and he's doing that. So there's a lot going on here. But then it's like, I'll go, oh, I've chimed in again. Oh, I've chimed in again. It's like, I am on a podcast.

4:33I should probably chime in. I'd say the only negative to that comment is that they've said, what did they say? Unbearable at this point, which means they've really tried. That at this point means they've given you a chance. No, there was desperation. I kind of agreed with it.

4:44SlamJar:I used to get a DM from the same guy every week telling me to get you off the pod. Yeah. Why are you telling him? He doesn't need to hear that. He does not need to hear that. It's a random guy. Find it. Stevie 11 White. Robbie Knox. Yeah. There was a guy and he was like, please get him off. He brings the mood down. He changes the... I agree. I'm not asking me to be on. I go on with a mask. I bring the mood down. He asks me back. I've been doing this pod for five years. We find you funny. And also the more stuff you do that's quite boring and stuff makes us seem well excited. I think a lot of the audience love you.

5:25SlamJar:Most of them. Thanks. Right. But? But I love the idea. Right. And it's only that one guy. I love the idea that you have just ruined something. That he... No, I know. I feel bad. He really loved the pod. Yeah. Wouldn't you apologise to him? The other pod I do. Honestly, the other pod I do, I get it all the time. Just like this was better before you were on it. Really? Yeah. Oh, it's consistent, man. Different listeners. Yeah, and it's the same fucking feedback across the board. Mate, you just need time. I got that for the first three years of this. And now it's been on this pod. I looked at my LinkedIn.

6:01I was hating for ages, wasn't it?

6:02SlamJar:Six years. What? You've been on this pod for nearly six years? Pod's only been going six years. Five or six? Seven years. Five years. Soon? Fuck me. It's almost seven years. Five years. I should be bedded in. You've got LinkedIn? Yeah, I went through a phase maybe four months ago. I was like, I'm going to get really big on LinkedIn. And I just didn't. What's the phase? Only wankers are big on LinkedIn. Yeah. Unbearable. Again. What were you aiming to get? That is a weird thing to just choose to do. Well, I thought like, oh, it might help my career one day to have a good LinkedIn. I thought that's like businesses.

6:36No, it's really, it's quite good for podcasts.

6:39SlamJar:You go and browse on LinkedIn, do you? Yeah. what are you doing on it what are you doing on it what are you doing on it what are you doing on it what are you doing on it what are you doing on it what are you doing on it I could not tell you I just see like what people are up like I'll have like other YouTubers on there and you get to see how they make their videos and stuff what's your LinkedIn Alfie oh you're not embarrassed by that no follow me I'm trying to get a thousand followers on LinkedIn guys please smash the follow I don't know I've given up podcaster musician content creators hang on right let me there was a typo someone someone messaged me yesterday and went just to let you know, it says on musician, it says you have 10 kids million.

7:18That had been on there for about two years. What? I meant to put 10 million streams. For some reason I put 10 kids million streams.

7:29SlamJar:Right. So this is what Alfie posted at the end of December. Is this his last post? Hang on. Is this not a repost? Because I haven't posted in a while. Oh, December's ages ago. December, yeah. Yeah, yeah, go. Six more months. oh no this was middle of last year sorry six more months left of 2024 it's time to start making those changes you've been avoiding that's not me no matter that can't be me let go of anything or anyone holding you no i don't i literally just i edited your goals what are you doing to make the most that's not me at all you did not share that he did honestly no he wrote this i didn't this is he wrote this one it's total rubbish guys my linkedin is don't be tricky thinking high performance means high achievement is that Jake Humphrey I see him on train all the time yeah first bloody class I know don't dox him means high achievement how is that doxing him saying he gets the train now we know it's somewhere between Stowmarket and London not necessarily I get the train a lot well yeah that was I was just trying to read some Jake Humphrey yeah I know he's king of LinkedIn isn't he yeah he's good my LinkedIn's decent and I haven't posted in a while.

8:38It's more just about my editing and stuff like behind scenes. Do you work on there, do you? No, I just post about it because then say like in, I don't know, five years, I'm unemployed. I can go, well, look what I did. Has it ever benefited you as a website, like genuinely? Has anyone ever seen your LinkedIn and gone, oh, I'll get this guy to do some work for me or something? I just didn't realise it worked in this industry. Yeah, in a roundabout way, I know that other people I know who are on there get loads of work for it. I felt like it was like a proper business thing. I didn't think in here it was...

9:11SlamJar:No, you won't get anything on it. No, I've never been on it. Because you weren't, obviously, what do you... I think it's cool though. I follow Mark Goldbridge on there. I find that interesting. Yeah, what's interesting about Mark Goldbridge? What's he put on there then? He'll like put, if he gets like, you know you see like on a YouTube channel, I keep saying like and I notice that. But now you've got me. The issue is you've now watched... That's so terrible. But now that you've said it, we're going to think it. They're going to listen. and I keep saying the same word over and over. You've brought that to people's attention.

9:39SlamJar:Well, I'm not going to say it again. They're going to now, they're going to be in their cars, in the gym, they're going to be, you're in their ears, they're going to be picking up every time you say the word like. No like. I'm not going to say it. Every time you say like, I'm a professional, I'm not going to say it. You give me permission to give you a big dead arm. Yeah. This is what I need to learn. If you're listening, turn the visuals on. I need to learn. Alfie's getting a punch. Good news for that guy, I'm not going to say much. Why? Because you're too scared of saying anything other than like.

10:06Yeah. What's Goldbridge got on his LinkedIn? So he will put... Are you thinking that much? Along the lines of, on his main YouTube channel, say like, I didn't do it. I didn't do it. Come on. I stopped myself. It's a halfie though. It's a halfie. Yeah. Because I stopped myself. That's awful, isn't it? So unprofessional. he will put something on his main channel you know that say along the lines of you know that Bundesliga thing yeah you sort of hear more about that on LinkedIn you hear more about that on LinkedIn in more detail as in like he's telling you how he feels about it it's just more detail I just find it interesting but can anyone see these posts or is it like a professional

11:00SlamJar:Yeah, because he's not going to say what he really thinks about it, is he? Because he's got the Bundesliga can just look it on his LinkedIn, can't they? No, but I think it's cool. I don't know. I just think it's cool. I don't know. Talk about the ins and the outs of the years. Yeah, exactly. I like the behind the scenes stuff. You what? I like that that's different. No, that's different. No, that's totally different. I enjoy. You have to let me use it in enjoy. You have to let me use it in terms of enjoy. You've got a whole episode to punch him. It's going to happen. I'm not going to say it again.

11:27Yeah, yeah, yeah. I've got a small piece of little news that you'll like. Okay, you've got a small piece? A small piece, and I've got some news that you're going to like. I don't know if you will like it, but a few weeks ago, we were speaking about my dad on here, and we were trying to discuss how he became Sir Clive Cliff. Yeah? Well, I called him Clive. So you called him Clive. His name's Terry. Yeah. You called him Clive, and the man's rolled with it. Like, his TikTok account is like Clive Cliff. Like, he's really, really gone for it. and like people will sometimes if he watches your family are a bunch of clout chasers weird weird i'm gonna say they are we do not like that but he really rolled with it yeah and like he's gone on tiktok streams and he'll like comment on things and people will be like oh i like your username i love happy hour and then he'll be like oh it's my son like that because they know it yeah gets worse.

12:23Yeah. It was his birthday yesterday at the time of recording. Okay. He's not a sir anymore. What, is he a lord? Because of this whole thing, one of his friends has bought him a lord's ship. So my dad is now... Because of the pod? Because of the pod and all of this has happened, he's now an actual lord. Lord Sir Clive Cliff. No sir, is there anymore?

12:45SlamJar:Can he start a pod? It'd get cancelled, didn't it? He would have cancelled within the first 15 minutes. But he might be one of those podcasts that never gets cancelled because they do it from the start. Because he's like a HS Tiki Taki, isn't he? He'd get us cancelled. He talks about, when he calls Stevie up, and he talks about... Stuff that we shouldn't say on it. He's the guy who can say the word. Right, yeah. He likes a bit of... A bit much. Yeah. For a pod. So, Dad, I know he's listening. He listens to every episode now. I tell you who he's similar to. Go on. you remember the in-betweeners jay's dad okay jay's dad yeah character designed to be vulgar just awful just an awful guy yeah happy birthday dad yeah i'm not gonna say lord because i don't think he's earned that he's got like a whole he's been sending and like he's changed his um his profile picture on facebook is now his like coat of arms thing he's got his own coat of arms Yeah, he's got all that.

13:48SlamJar:Can we have a little read out of his messages that he sent you recently, just to get a vibe of the man? Well, he sent me that two days ago, and it says, It's official, Lord Terry Cliff has arrived. And I wrote, ha, ha, ha, there it is. And he said, appreciated my loyal subject. And I said, just in time for your birth. Then he said, I've got a coat of arms too. And then he wrote, Latin, Dominus Honoratus et Custos Mineri Hugon, English, honoured by the guardian of the manor. Okay, it's all a bit high-brow for me. when does he say the word minge he's not doesn't message me that often um no he's been telling me about his rash where is it where is it please be honest he's a married man it's not what we're going for it was all over his body do you want me telling people this dad um he listens all over his body he listens um have I got anything football predictions this is boring yeah can you just search the word minge no ball He doesn't message me the word ninge.

14:48He doesn't want people to think this kind of stuff about him. He's having a great time at home. He's a lord now. Yeah, right.

14:54SlamJar:Well, happy birthday. Yeah, happy birthday, Lord Sir Terry Cliff. I keep adding a sir in still. I fucked that. Lord Sir Clive Cliff. Clive Cliff. Now, last week we did Mythbusters, but we did it our own way. We did it theory slammers. We did an episode all about Mythbusters, so if you missed that one, you probably want to go and listen to that first. People have been saying it's brilliant. Read some of the comments out. on the Reddit like honestly it's been some of the best feedback ever yeah go on we've got here it says I love Minge from Lord Terry Cliff he's putting that on Reddit yeah weird he hasn't said that anyway so the concept is Mythbusters the old TV show if you missed last week you can still listen to this it won't make any difference from last week except we do have nicknames for you two that you got last week so please tell the audience your new names yeah I'm Slam Jar and this is Slamwise Gandhi and you are I'm the slam the theory slammer it's been so long I can't remember the theory slammer theory slammer so the old TV show Mythbusters is about a couple of fellas and a team who basically bust myths yeah that's hard to say bust myths bust myths that is hard isn't it that is weird so I watched a load of episodes wrote down how they did it and these guys are going to say how they think they'd do it and see how close they are to the accurate last week we discussed whether or not it's possible to bend a bullet we discussed whether Whether it's you get more wet running or walking in the rain.

16:19Can you kill someone by throwing a playing card? At them. And could a firework powered chair shoot a human into space?

16:27SlamJar:Turns out no walking, no, no was the answers. So you're not here just for fun and humour. You're here to learn. Yep, okay. What a great pod. Slam Jar and Slam Wise Gandhi. I'm locked in. First one of the episode. Slam Sparrow, you can call me. Slam Smith. yeah yeah slammy smoddicks people with the name of slam slam egg and chips i like it v west slam west slam you've missed west slam that was good that's good that yeah slamala anderson slamala slanderson slammy abraham let's do this for the next hour yeah okay it's just let's do this slammifications think of the slamifications if we do that um i just slam them through my mind and think that that would cause a bit of an upset yap slam good we've got a whole football that's going yeah now it's just boring me so that's okay the first one of the episode is the penny drops can dropping a penny from the empire state building kill someone of course we can just think if not if it's not the empire state building that kind of height how big is the eiffel tower irrelevant the empire state How big is the Empire State Building?

17:41Let me find out for you. How tall is... Can we ask Pete? No, Empire State Building. Sick of you asking Pete all the time.

17:50SlamJar:381 metres. She said I don't speak to her anymore. I just talked to him. It's like a throuple. Well, just a couple. Fiona's baggage. Top floor, 380 metres. Sorry, you were doing something. How are you? the highest floor you can go on is 380 metres the tip of that little spire bit is 443 but we're saying from the top floor because people have to be able to do it and be there and if you lob a penny down lob or drop you can lob or drop I think you've got to lob because it's thinner at the top so you've got to get it past the next few floors yeah you've got to throw it off the platform can it split a man in two no that's not what I asked fuck me that would be a whole different thing can it just kill someone hit their skull and kill them Right Do you think it's possible?

18:39SlamJar:I think it's definitely possible to kill a man with a penny Alfie? But not by dropping it on him Just by giving it to him to live on That's all you got Alfie Days would be fuming You like that? No Why not? Because you'd buy a penny sweet And sell it for two pennies Right? Now you've got two pee Why don't you do one of those trade up videos Start doing it now. You've got to do it. You can't just say it. I bought a penny sweet. Who's bought a penny sweet off me for 2p? Literally, mate. If I was crazy and went up, give me 2p for this penny sweet. Give me 2p. They're going, all right, all right. It's only 2p.

19:19I'm not going to risk it. I go, you're mental. I'm not talking to you anymore. Give me 2p. I'm on you. Give me 2p. No, get off me. Give me 2p. Ow. Sued. 10 grand. Fucking rich. Yeah, fair enough. Done.

19:31SlamJar:Quick, it was quick. So do you think it's possible? No. You can't kill a man with a penny. Too little, too light. I think you can. I think you can. It's not sharp. You'd have to pick up a very big speed. This is the card all over again, mate. You're fooling for it again. Well, it's got 380 metres to pick up that speed. But I think only after a certain distance, that is its maximum velocity. I like that. Terminal velocity. Yeah. And I think it won't... Because otherwise, what if you threw it off the tallest thing in the world? What if you threw it off the space, international space shuttle? Yeah.

20:04as long as it comes into Earth's orbit and falls.

20:08SlamJar:I need to know, dropping it off Eiffel Tower, World Trade Center, or the Space Shuttle, does it have the same amount of falls? Yes, after a certain amount. Go and go and go. I mean, all right, if you shot a penny out of a gun, it would kill someone in the head. Yeah, it would. That was a bullet, wouldn't it? Yeah. But it can't be going that far. Remember, every object has a terminal velocity. if you shot I've just thought that right imagine this in a James Bond film if by the way if any directors are watching this I've copyrighted this okay you shoot someone in the head with a penny gun penny for your thoughts that's so cool there you go and they could be called like the what would they be called penny wise the penny killer or something yeah penny killer yeah yeah oh my god it's a crime scene right and then and then they take the body to the morgue and they're cut oh my god it's the penny killer and there's like a penny in the skull.

21:03Yeah. A penny for your thoughts. A penny for your thoughts. That's great for a movie. You should star in there. That was brilliant.

21:08SlamJar:You became him. Yeah, I'll do that. I'll do that. I'll say you're the killer. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, well, you don't know the ending. Yeah. I look like the killer on the whole. No, because two seconds ago, you imagine I go bang, penny for your thoughts. But was he really an evil man? You need to, let's think, leave it there. Leave that there. Leave that there. Okay. So you don't think it's possible. You do think it's possible. I don't think it's possible because I think a penny will only reach a certain power. But you do think shot from a gun. Yeah, you could kill anyone with anything if you shoot it from a gun.

21:37Water.

21:39SlamJar:Not water. But ice. Yeah. Okay. How would you test it? Just do it. You'd launch it off the... What, on a human? Yeah, what if there's someone walking below? On a mannequin, like last episode. How are you going to hit it? You're launching it off the building and you're just going to hope 380 metres down you hit your mannequin. I'd have 20 ,000 of them. Just throw 20... Those are mannequins. You're bound to hit one, aren't you? Or what about if you just had a big tube, like what they have, you know them big yellow tubes that they have on the scaffold? Yeah, yeah. They throw the wood down. You have one of them from the top of the M4.

22:12SlamJar:Clabber. And then the mannequins at the bottom chuck the penny. Bang. Bash. Okay, so this myth is quite well known. Five floors below the top of the Empire State Building, on the 81st floor, there's a ledge that's just covered in pennies. So loads of people do go to the top and try and launch it off. But because of the way all the wind works around the building, they just get dragged back on. They should all go to prison because they're willing to get it. Isn't that mental? Isn't it mental that there's actually a floor covered in pennies of people attempting to throw them off? I think I've been there.

22:43I've seen this. That's weird. Yeah, I didn't throw a penny. It's really weird. No? No. Got a brick, didn't you? A brick. Yeah. For a human. For this myth, they made a penny-firing gun. Oh! and they basically tested what is the maximum the terminal velocity of a penny so if they drop a terminal a penny what's the fastest speed it could ever reach naturally yeah 64.4 miles per hour that would kill you so a penny at 64.4 miles per hour

23:15SlamJar:I don't know if it would well remember the playing card got up to 150 what that's sick no he's are you doing the old advert no I'm just saying no he's actually asking would a car at 64 on the motorway kill you? Would a car at 64 miles per hour kill you, Jack? Yes. They say drop to 20 instead of 30 because you're more likely to survive. You're doubling that speed. Yeah, fair enough. He's theorising. I'm theorising. Sorry, slam jar. So 64.4 miles per hour of a gun, and that's the perfect speed they needed. They first tested it on a block of asphalt and a block of concrete. Is asphalt the shit we were talking about last week when they throw the card in the...

23:58SlamJar:No, that's ballistics gel. Asphalt's like the stuff on the floor. Yeah, kind of like that. Yeah, so what do you think happens when they shoot the concrete and the asphalt with a penny going 64.4 mAh? I don't think anything happens. I think, if anything, the penny gets a bit scratched up. That's about it. Concrete? No. It ain't doing concrete. You're right. Yeah? The penny couldn't penetrate the surface, but it did leave a bit of an imprint where it hit. Okay. So you could tell where it hit. Demon's skull. Yeah. Then they shoot the penny at the cranium of a ballistics dummy. So it's a skull covered in that ballistics gel to simulate how thick the skin is.

24:39Yeah. What are your predictions on that one?

24:41SlamJar:It broke the skin, but it did not kill the man. You've just shook your head at me. I don't know if you knew you were doing that, but you did. I think it went through. What killed the skull? The penny. last episode I kept nodding and agreeing with Alfie and you were going stop doing that I don't want nodding and agreeing because that's doing here we go for Britsio you just did one you just did one I went like that didn't I accidentally the penny broke the surface of the gel but bounced off the skull you got it exact and I didn't show you that you've just got a real life on the moment correct I'm on form today I'm on form I'm on form last week not so much awful awful awful Start expectations low.

25:23Yeah.

25:23SlamJar:And then impress in the second one. So that's a penny going at max speed. They took this penny one step further at this speed. They were so sure that they agreed to try and catch the penny in their hand. Oh, that will sting. 64 miles per hour. What do you think happened with that? It really hurt the hand. Just hurt the hand a little bit. Oh, a little bit. Didn't cut or bruise the skin at all. How did it go through that gel then? Yeah, that gel does not seem like it. That gel's crap. Yeah. I'm thinking that for some of these but also I guess it's thinner there and also I guess it depends if the penny the issue is the penny moves in the air I guess if the penny goes down like thin side on its edge that's probably going to hurt more than slap slap's not going to cut is it theory no not yet he was so confident he let Jamie shoot him in the arse as well in the episode it's quite funny he just goes shoot me he's got his jeans on and he shoots me in the arse looks like a bit of dog's arse did it hurt Yeah, he was going, that did hurt.

26:21But then to put the myth to bed, so before we slam it...

They decided to see how fast they could make the penny travel to actually be able to kill someone. So a lot of the time on Mythbusters, even if they bust that the original one isn't true, they'll go, but how could we make it true? So this time they create a metal block that he puts on the end of a sniper rifle with the penny inside that block with like a bit for the penny to shoot out of and they put a blank in the gun to shoot it. So the blank, the air of the blank shoots the penny out at the same speed that a bullet would go.

28:09So that shoots it at three times the speed of sound. The penny's moving at this, which is roughly the same as the bullet itself. The penny for his thoughts. Bullets are fast. So I've got the hot tape on here. Yeah. What's your prediction on the bullet fired penny? Yeah, fuck it. Could kill a man. The penny, weighing only two and a half grams, still doesn't have enough mass even at bullet firing speeds to cause any real damage. I'm learning something. The penny bent in half.

28:36SlamJar:Wow. Hit the floor and just bent. What before it'd kill someone? Yeah. They're just not. It's the same as the playing card one from last episode. Spoiler. because there's no weight to it and there's nothing solid enough it just can't do anything. So a penny dropped off the Eiffel Tower cannot kill a man. Yeah, but maybe the Empire State Building. Yeah, it's taller. Different building. Different building, sexist. What was the sexist bit? I went right. He just went couldn't kill a man, could kill a woman. Weaker. No, no. Disagree. Weaker skull. He's theorising. Let him theorise. Theorising, not sexist.

29:12SlamJar:I'm thinking about it. Okay, myth Slams Is yawning contagious? Could not kill a trans person Strong

29:26Theorising

29:27SlamJar:Theorising Is yawning contagious?

29:34Oh

29:35SlamJar:You started to go No, no, I was just mimicking Mimicking Is that you or me? Stop yawning This is a real one This is a real one there'll be a lot of people listening to us now and they'll start yawning and they'll be having a shit I'll stop doing it that's a fucking big and I wasn't even doing it for real I've choked you've just swallowed a yawn you've just swallowed your yawn there did you know I didn't know this before I was watching this episode we don't know what yawning is but we don't know no one knows we don't know why we do it you're yawning again yeah I actually did get a yawn in a big one we don't really know why we do it they I shouldn't have mentioned yawning.

30:15So we don't really know why humans even yawn. Yeah, dogs do it though. They have theories that it wakes your body up, brings more oxygen into your bloodstream, keeps your lung tissue lubricated and regulates your brain temperature. Most of them have been debunked, except the brain temperature one. Their yawns seem more linked to your brain than they do your lungs and your body.

30:36SlamJar:I thought it was because... I thought it was, what was it now? I've read up on this. Oh my God. And I thought it was, yeah, I thought it was getting oxygen into your body. So it does do that, but there's no benefit to doing it. You don't need it. You don't need, you're not sat there going, I better yawn because I need this oxygen. No, but when you have a big influx in oxygen, it makes your brain more alert. So that's, yeah, that's the brain temperature thing. So that's a theory around that. There was a test that they did, which was, so this isn't about it being contagious, but there was a test they did that I was reading yesterday.

31:11This isn't on Mythbusters, but... You're making me go... Right. Everyone just fucking stop now.

31:16SlamJar:No, I can't stop now. I can't stop. This is insane. I'm having an existential crisis. I don't need to go through the test, do I? We've just tested it ourselves. I've never thought about what a yorn is. One of the things I read yesterday was that there was a test that was done where they showed people pictures of snakes and frogs and you're meant to obviously have more of a reaction to the snakes, be alert, ready to protect. And they did it both before and after yawning. and people were way more alert after yawning with the snake so yawning does like literally make you more like oh because i've got this little thing that i do right where um you know everyone say everyone's set off now you know once in a blue moon right when we leave the studio whatever and i'm driving back to norwich right every once in a blue moon i'll be like too tired right and i shouldn't it's not safe to drive right i'll almost like if i'm like really drift enough i'll almost like purposely like crash my car what i never want to get in your car again you're not getting insured again what have you just said wait on the motorway i thought you were gonna sound purposely yawn to wake myself up i thought you were going no no no that's not a little thing you do what have you just said in the car no i'm not actually crashing it i'll be on the motorway and if a car's like i'll go like oh i could just veer out of this lane quickly, right?

32:33SlamJar:And then I'll go like that, right? And it will spike my adrenaline. I am never getting in your car again. Oh my word. You nutjob. That is insane. That is insane. Why have you just admitted to that? Just have a coffee. That is actually insane. No, just give me a little adrenaline boost. No, that's mental. Yeah, that is an adrenaline boost, nearly dying. I'm not doing it to other cars. I'm doing it to like the side. the island. Has Fee ever been in the car asleep when you've done this? Say it for the audio listeners. Every time. I've been in the car. He's been in the car, yeah. I'll be there. I'm getting a train now.

33:11SlamJar:I need to wake up, so I'll go, right, let's go into the middle island. And then I'm awake and I'm good to go again. So you're forcing a potential crash in the hopes that it will wake you up. In a way. Just yawn. God, I used to have this awful thing I used to do when I was younger where did you ever do it where like you'd close your eyes did you ever do that what when you're driving yeah down the country roads yeah mental just really late I'm not getting in a car it's like an OCD thing yes yeah it is and see how far you can go yeah I didn't but it's like a compulsion like I couldn't yeah it's so weird I'm never getting in a car yeah it just reminded me of that like 10 years ago I did that yeah mad innit you're both gonna get arrested no no that's alright it's 10 years ago you said years ago I don't really do my thing I was like I was 18 don't really do my thing so yawning is involuntary the mouth opens the jaw drops and allows in as much air as possible as the lung fills to capacity stomach muscles contract and a diaphragm is pushed down the heart beats up to 30 faster whilst yawning that's it and when the lungs are full excess air is expelled but we don't know why i have one now i want one now you're on here you go that was good actually it's such a nice feeling that's so close the noise as well when you that's a good way to wake up.

34:26When you're driving Jack, rather than trying to crash, do a yawn but don't just yawn silently. Do a big noise because that's a wake up. I'll do a big noise on my end. That's such a lovely feeling. I've never thought about what yawn is. I don't need to ask the first question. Do you think it's possible? You both think yawning is contagious.

34:42SlamJar:Yawning million percent contagious and I would also say you can do it in a species so dogs can set humans off, humans can set dogs off. How would you test it? I would yawn in the face of my dog and see if it does it back. Cool. and my dog is that what you'd do my dog and my dog okay cool so for this because they couldn't just do that and go there we go they built a room rigged with spying devices which is a two-way mirror and a hidden camera and they put out an ad looking looking for extras for myth busters but they didn't say why they needed the extras they put 10 extras in a room for a control test always need a control test in these tests remember to compare what's a control test then a test to see what's the normal amount.

35:22So they'll put 10 people in a room, watch them for 10 minutes with no yawning, do any of them yawn within that 10 minutes.

35:30SlamJar:Okay. Second time, they give nothing to read and they're not even allowed to talk to each other. It's 10 minutes of nothing. How many yawns do you think they happened in that 10 minutes of nothing? 10 people? 10 people. Six yawns. What was the time? 10 minutes. I've gone too high there, I think four. No. Wait, I don't get it. so they're they're doing nothing in the room they're doing nothing but they're not yawning to make them yawn or anything they're just they're just put them in a room do they know they don't know why they're there no zero yawns zero yawns zero yawns then they gave the extras a clipboard each with a piece of paper which just had tax laws printed on it and they just had to read through that how many yawns we're fucked now we're actually I know it's bad we're so sorry I should have put this one at the end of the episode I'm not even tired I know we're so sorry it's mental oh my god we're fucked that's our one rule We do not yawn on the pod.

36:18What's quite funny is when I was doing the research for this one, I was yawning so much. It was so annoying.

36:24SlamJar:It must be then. Right. So you've got the clipboard. Clipboard, they're reading that. How many yawns do you think when they're reading through tax documents? Well, hang on. So why wasn't the test just put two actors in there who have to yawn every two minutes and then see how the other ones yawn? Yeah, we'll get to that. Oh, right, okay. Control test first. I'm going to go zero with the tax documents. I'm going to say one yawn. They got a couple. It's inconclusive, but that's just people yawning, but it didn't seem to catch like you'd expect so then they added a yawning seed yeah so this is they put someone in the room to keep yawning to see if it made others yawn didn't work but they didn't think it was they said it was inconclusive not enough of a test only 10 people not enough time either they said so they went to a flea market car boot sale and they set up a truck with three isolated rooms inside it and they'd sit people on their own in each room for 10 minutes with nothing to do.

37:17Every person that went into room one and two, when they were first guided into the room, the person guiding them in would yawn at them as they go into the room. Number three, no one would yawn. So then they could get an idea of the comparison between yawn and no yawn. This time they tested 50 people. Rooms one and two are the yawners. How many people in rooms one and two do you think yawned back within the 10 minutes? 12. Percentage. 25%. I think higher, like 40. 29%. Good guess, Jack. However, room three. Call me yawn French. Room three, no yawn. What percentage? Zero. 6%. 25%. What? Weirdly, small difference on MythBus as they went, that's enough of a difference for us to say myth.

38:08Well, what do you say? Why did the 25 % yawn?

38:12SlamJar:29 and 25 is not big of a difference. No, I agree. but they yawned at no yawn. So in the episode, they go, that's enough for us to say, which I did think was a bit weird. So this is the only one out of all of them I've then gone to do my own research because I've been a bit like, I wouldn't count that. Yeah. 29 to 25 % is too close. But what are you, so this is myth confirmed on the episodes. They go, confirmed. Yeah. What's your thing? I'm going to say myth, no, theory, theory, what do we say? We say theory slammed. You say slammed. Theory.

38:47It would be nice to rhyme with slammed, wouldn't it? Yammed. Theory. Yes, ma 'am. Theory.

38:57SlamJar:Damn. Good theory. That. I mean, confirmed doesn't... The word confirmed doesn't work with myth busters, does it? So you could just say ticked or... Theory. Bam. Theory bam. Bam or bammed? Bammed. bam theory slammed and bam so bam is confirmed slammed is busted okay so on this one is terrible really not great as i said though i did a bit of my own research on this yawning is a form of echo phenomena which is the automatic involuntary repetition of another person's sounds words or movements like echolalia which is repeating words and echopraxia which is repeating actions this isn't done on purpose but it's a pathological repetition of an external stimulus so if you do something you know when like sometimes you say something and i'll just repeat it yeah that's just me doing this echo phenomena thing right and yawning is that exact thing there's no real reason we just mirror each other sometimes and it's just stuck in the human psyche to do it however there's also a tendency that it's linked to empathy so the more empathetic someone is the more likely they are to yawn.

40:08I was going to say this. And you're also more likely to yawn more around people you know. Right. And that you have an emotional connection to. So with their test... And look at us. With their test, they're sticking strangers in a room together and stuff. They do yawn a little bit, but if they did it with a huge group of friends instead, you're more likely... And that's also why dogs can do it. Because you've got a connection to the dog. But some animals do it and some animals just don't

40:35SlamJar:do it at all. You know when footballers go abroad and they put on that weird accent when they get interviewed yeah they're doing echo phenomena that's an empathy thing because i do it when i go abroad and it's cringe what do you do yeah you do hello my friend yeah i sometimes speak in like i still speak english obviously i can't speak another language but i put on their little twang yes yeah you did it you did it the other day when we were there yeah someone said something and he went to say okay and instead and he was just going okay i mean okay please it was well weird what i hate that stop doing that please please me please my friend what are you doing i'm empathetic do you think they'll understand you more i was actually saying this to sunny i don't think they will because i'm just speaking in english they're smart enough right that they can speak their language and also a bit of english i'm complicating it because i should just be speaking queen's english right that's probably how they've learned the language.

41:29SlamJar:Yeah. But instead, I'm doing their weird language. Not that they're weird, but like, I'm doing their... You're doing English with their accent. Their accent with their, yeah. What if they came to London and went, all right, Jack, please, mate. Saying that, he would understand it. He would understand it. Yeah. But I go, I do it all in normal English, and then right at the end, I do a little twang for them. No, because it would be more mood men. or like Geordie's or Scouts what do you mean so if if you go to Newcastle you spend the day with really cool road men would you be like yeah my guy like my guy but you know if I do a bit when I'm around a sunny I pick up their really you know the other thing though is if they come to London it wouldn't be if they start going alright governor it would be if they speak Spanish here they'd start going like uno cerveza port yeah that is what it would be Like, you know, like, their grassy arse.

42:25Yeah. And you'd be going, I can speak Spanish. Yeah. It's fine.

42:28SlamJar:But I think because I think it's an empathetic thing in terms of, like, I feel like I should at least be speaking their language. So your version of that is doing the accent. So instead of going, like, okay, I don't know, like, some Spanish sentence or whatever. Imagine that was Spanish. Instead, I'm going, like, can I have a bottle of water, please? French. Okay. I don't know what I've said there. Do you think as well it's like a fitting in thing? Yeah. You want to fit in with that group. I think I have that. Yeah. I did a presenting thing years ago and spoke a bit like a roadman, and I can't watch it.

43:06What brand? It's with, I can't remember. This was years ago. But I just remember I've watched it back, and I'm speaking not like me at all. I've done it. And it's recorded. Oh. I want to see it. I've done it. I've done it. I've done it. I've done it. I've done it.

43:22SlamJar:I've done it. I'm just trying to think. I just want people to like me. No, I've just, I've been around people when they're speaking in a certain way. And you just copy it. Yeah. I think like, I think that's kind of what you see in like the sidemen and stuff like that though. What doing voices? Oh, we've spoken about this before, haven't we? Yeah, yeah. But they don't all say law it, do they? No. But they do all say law it. Is that slang? It's just a law it, isn't it? Yeah, I know. But it's that like picking up slang and the only way to say that slang. because I can go allow it. I have to go allow it.

43:55I'd say, can you please allow that, sir? Yeah. All right, let's do a number one. So interesting. So yawning is contagious. Yeah. This is an exciting one. You ready? Yeah. Can you catch a bullet in your teeth?

44:11SlamJar:I can't. Mine would shatter. So this is an extremely well-known magic trick. Yeah. The trick's been performed for over 200 years. the first ever real bullet catch was performed by Carl Skeens in 1980 for a TV show that's incredible but I believe no wait I think he did it with like a metal thing in his mouth that he just held like that and then this person shot it into that so he didn't catch it with his teeth that's quite a risk that isn't it yeah if the bullet goes one centimetre above you've got no lip you've got one anyway so you've got nothing to lose you should have a go I might as well do it yeah so it's been done by loads of modern magicians David Blaine did it Yeah But the tricks also killed a few magicians Yeah I've heard about that Madame Dolinsky in 1820 died Because the rifle was Madame what?

44:56Madame Dolinsky

44:58SlamJar:Isn't that the Isn't that the gypsy lady from Holes? I don't know Have you seen Holes? No Stanley Yelnack No I don't know what you just said Stanley Yelnacks I don't know what any of that is You've seen Holes haven't you? Digging up them holes Digging you're gonna feel like that because it's not alright it's a song it's in Hull yeah yeah yeah yeah years ago oh come on you have to take the pig up the mountain to see Madame Ladinsky or whatever oh I don't know oh Madame Zabroni that's better it was both madams I was just any listener to this pod is gonna know the film Hulls and then some obscure mythical characters there will be one out there you know what I was on about they're going you're getting it wrong Jack it's this so 1820 she died when the rifle wasn't loaded with a blank and chungling su in 1918 when a real bullet was fired from a hidden chamber instead of the blank so the trick obviously they use blanks pocket in their mouth and then suddenly show it but it's i think there's been like six deaths maybe from doing it stop doing it so firstly doing do you think it is possible to catch a bullet in your teeth so we're not saying you're not allowed to use the mechanism that guy used i've never been more confident of anything in my life this is not possible because if you think about it you know when they got the the cup in the mouth it's hitting the back of the mouth right well it's hitting the back of the cup that's what's stopping it in order to be able to stop the bullet with your teeth you've got a bite down at that exact second so even if you've got the timing perfectly right that's impossible and also it's gonna be a bullet is gonna be hot yeah but did not just fire through your teeth yeah it would fucking get it like a bowling ball through some pins, mate.

46:44SlamJar:Not possible. Okay, so how would you test it? I would get some... How do you test this one? A contraption resembling that stimulates the head. Stimulates? What's the word? Simulates. Simulates a head. That simulates a head and it with some big teeth on there and yeah, you just have to do it that way. How would you make it go down at the same time? Mini golf! What? Use a mini golf clown. let's do it on that is that what we're going for something to replicate the tooth basically yeah but how would you get it to shut at the right time you could probably time it because you could just you could shoot that gun 10 times slow-mo camera see how long it takes to hit the wall have a contraption there that closes that is a computer that closes at that exact time computers yeah computers innit CV's nodding so first they created a teeth strength test they used acrylic dentures that were gripped shut using air pressure holding a bullet a weighted pendulum swung down and hit the bullet to create the same amount of force as if it was shot by a gun so they put the bullet in the teeth made it grip as much so they got one of the guys to do a grip test on a thing and then they found out how much pressure he could do so they did that with these fake dentures right put the bullet in the teeth already and then force that bullet to be hit by a pendulum to see if it would shoot it to the back of the mouth.

48:14That was the first thing they did. What do you think happened when that hit? It shattered the teeth.

48:21SlamJar:It will shatter the teeth every time. Yeah? Yeah, I don't think it stays there. Teeth aren't strong enough. The front teeth were completely smashed out. Yeah. Then they put the bullet in the back teeth hung on the side there instead. Yeah. What do you think happened with those ones? Well, even if those could sustain the pressure, you can't catch a fucking bullet in your back teeth can you it's got to get through your mouth first it could go that way yeah you could yeah see you could it also shattered them i think it did it the bullet didn't move at all i think it just stayed in the dentures i think it's so strong back there do you reckon you could bite for your finger you isn't it like the only thing stopping us biting up for our own finger is mental yeah we can't be really easy yeah and obviously the pain.

49:09You can bite your own tongue off, can't you? But your brain wouldn't let you do it. What are you thinking about? Your jaws are so strong. You're capable of biting something.

49:19SlamJar:Well, I could bite through my finger. Yeah. Not with that one. Not with them. Back ones. Yeah. Could I? Yeah. Do it. Imagine that. He just bit his finger off on the phone. We'd be like, oh, his brain doesn't stop it. What? Our teeth are crazy strong. Yeah, yours are. Yeah, well, not anymore. Not anymore, yeah. We've only got half of them left. okay we're learning today we're learning science so they when it didn't move yeah they didn't think that was right they were like that's a bit weird so what they thought they'd test is use a pig's jaw and teeth because pigs are stronger than humans with their jaw and teeth that bit of the show that you're glad you don't have to watch now pretty gross they got a pig's head and the guy had to cut the jaw out and then use that jaw to create do you see it on the show yeah you're watching it The pig's dead?

50:03SlamJar:Yeah. Yeah. I'm not using the alive gig like you did. Are you coming back in after? No, so I got like a head from like a butcher's and then cut everything out, got rid of all the head bit and just kept the whole like long jaw bit. Right. And then they put like a metal pole through it to create the same rig but with the pig's jaw. That's nasty. Yeah, it wasn't amazing. You've been hanging out recently. Raven. What do you think happened? What do you think happened with the pig's jaw? He's shattered. Shattered. Completely ripped through the teeth again. This episode is brought to you by PayPal. So just because it's possible to grip the bullet hard enough doesn't mean your mouth could shut quick enough. So that's one part of the test. It's a long one, isn't it?

52:03Not complaining. The dentures managed it, but the pig's teeth didn't. But then they thought, well, now we need to find if it's even possible to quickly catch it. So then they did their jaw shutting speed. So they got a gun with a blank on one side of a bulletproof glass and then they got the people on the other side, slow motion. They shot the gun and then just tested how quickly they could shut there to see what the time between gunshot and mouth jaw shut is. And the best they got was nine milliseconds. Which is decent. Yeah, that's not bad, actually. So timing-wise...

52:35SlamJar:It's like that guy on TikTok. You seen that guy who's got the pizza shop? No. You can order whatever you want from the pizza shop and then you press the button. You get it bang on a minute. Oh, wow. In 10 seconds, you get the meal free. Everyone's out by a few milliseconds. Maybe you skipped it on... You can't actually hit it. No, you can. I've seen someone do it. Oh. Does it go off? Someone at work. Nuts, mate. Love to try that. Yeah. brilliant idea great good pr for the pizza firm yeah charity work yeah well spawn business yeah not the same thing at all actually timing wise it means it is technically possible in but it would be crazy lucky because it's not just doing it fast enough it's doing it fast enough at the exact right moment yeah so they basically wanted to test like is it possible to catch anything like that so they did a little paintball test tried to catch paintball pellets not no way of being fast enough next part of the experiment was pretty cool though they created a rig that had a gun on one side and a metal jaw on the other and they timed how long the bullet takes which is exactly what you said to get from one side to the other i told you i'm gonna do well today yeah and then they basically made using computers set it up so the jaw shut at the exact point that the bullet got to the jaw yeah after firing loads of bullets and adjusting the timing of the jaws shutting by milliseconds difference.

53:49They could never, ever get the jaw to catch the bullet. In some cases, the bullet actually just got fully squashed and exploded because it's so hot and moving so fast that it just fucked the bullet up because the jaw was metal.

53:59SlamJar:Oh, right. A human jaw would have just got completely fucked. Yeah, so they're not actually testing it properly. And that's on them. Whereas here, we theorise. Theory. Smash. Slammed. Slammed. Slammed. How the fuck have you? You're not called Smash Jar, are you? No, sorry. You're not Smash-wise, Gandhi. Sorry, Stevie, I messed up. Do it again. Theory. Slammed. The elevator of death. Okay. You don't like this, do you? No, it's going to put me on edge. Yeah. What if an elevator you're riding suddenly plummets? Let's not do this one. Skip it. It's just a pod, isn't it? Can you save yourself by jumping at the very last second?

54:38SlamJar:You could use this button and change the elevator to a hot air balloon. No, I'm terrified of hot air balloons. I'll never go in one, though, will I? No. so you're fine okay every time I say elevator imagine I'm saying hot air balloon or just say it so if if the thing you're in suddenly plummets can you save yourself by jumping at the very last second yeah right so it's the hot air balloon's going down like that do you think it's possible we're in the basket and just before it smashes into the ground below we just do a little jump do we just land I think you smash the top of the elevator what's that balloon yeah but there's a top to this one I think you just smash into the top no what?

55:17You do a jump at the last second it's plummeting. I think you just end up hitting the ceiling.

55:23SlamJar:No, if you do a little jump keep your head down. No, I'm not saying you can't do this little jump. I'm saying you'll do a little jump and it will go and I think it will just take you up. Do you think the elevator, sorry the balloon is just going to crumble on top of you like that? No, but it was this is what I'm seeing, right? Sorry for the audio listeners. lift going down lift going down lift going down lift going down jump lift still going down yeah all right but i don't know i'm theorized that's like that theory of all the chickens in a in a truck isn't it so so right so so you've got a truck say it weighs two ton yeah you've got 50 chickens right say they weigh i don't know a temp of a ton right you put them in the truck and they're all sat down right that truck now weighs 2.1 tons yeah you felt you with me were you yeah yeah yeah if they all fly and the truck's moving does that truck still weigh 2.1 tons or or does it weigh two tons two tons yeah doesn't it yeah but the energy's still in there it's still pushing so it still weighs 2.1 it'll still weigh two yeah if we all jumped on a train at the same time we're still within the train this table weighs two tons the mic's off it now that can't work but movement is what changes it no it's because it's I think it's because it's confined the weight is in there yeah you're so right this room right if you just made a box out of this room and I jumped I'm still inside it it's still weight it's still weight this is fucking cool you know how you can test that next time you stand on a scale pick up something heavy look at the weight chuck it up in the air quickly look right down and catch it No, just not weighing the room No, because that doesn't work Would that change?

57:15SlamJar:No, it wouldn't It wouldn't, no Yeah, it would change If the whole floor was the weight Yes It would I'm going to have to find out if Mythbusters have tested anything like that So what are we doing then? Elevate a plummeting Do you think that's possible? No, no, no, no I don't think it's possible I think maybe it does in the hot air balloon one Yeah, but that's not the question As it's coming, right you're flying down and then you jump. Yeah. You jump and you roll on the grass. Okay. You back yourself so much. I can actually give you an answer to that one. I can give you an answer to that one towards the end of this one.

57:50So we'll go back to it. How would you test this one? Elevator. Give it a go. With a pig. I think you've got to test. What are you up against a pig? You were doing so well. Wait, wait, wait. How do you get the pig to jump?

58:06SlamJar:That's it. You can't. You can put a pig in a hot air balloon but you can't make it jump. Famous saying. Beautiful saying. If I'm doing this experiment, I'm testing it out. What I'm doing is I'm testing how quick, I'm doing like two tests. One of them is how timed you can jump. I want to do a test on how a human can time their jump to the nearest whatever and get that bit right. and then I'm going to test it by... Then you need to test... I'm getting there, aren't I? Yep. Can't you just do it with a mannequin and just as it goes to hit the floor, the computer releases a little jump. You're relying on computers today.

58:58Maybe. I think maybe you test the jump thing and then you test... you like replicate it by maybe you do throw something i don't know i don't know so are you both saying impossible but you're saying possible in hot air balloon yeah okay so before they even started their test they spoke to a fellow called mr appell who'd worked with elevators for over 30 years he predicted if you're in an elevator you're traveling at the same speed as the elevator so jumping wouldn't help at all he said it actually try and lay down if he was ever in that situation because that would minimize the injury to the body they found an eight-story high My derelict hotel that was scheduled for demolition had a 92 foot drop.

59:37So I mean, watching this show is quite exciting. You get to watch all these things like fully crash and everything. Adam had the task of working out how to lift and drop the elevator. He disabled the safety brake and disconnected the original cables and attached it back with a movie special effects, quick release. So he lifted it all the way up and then basically just pressed it so the elevator could just fall the whole thing. Jamie had to figure out how to get their crash dummy buster to jump at the perfect time. and they also had to replicate a human jump, which is what you were saying, using a car spring inside overlapping tubes.

1:00:08They basically made the dummy jump at similar velocity to their own real jump. So they did test their own jump. But you said computers. But you weren't talking about the bloody car spring. It's still a computer to make it jump, though. They have to press a button. And you have. And you have. Give me the match ball. Not me, mate. You said they had to compare it to human jumps. That's exactly what they did. That's obvious. That's child's play. That's receptionship. The elevator was pulled to the top of the 92-foot drop. Adam pulled the quick release. Lift went flying down. Using slow motion cameras, 55 miles per hour, the lift hit on its way down.

1:00:41The slow motion camera showed that the dummy managed to jump at the exact point, thanks to the computer. He jumped up at two miles per hour. And he hit the roof. Okay, now I'm in high school. However, obviously, he then comes back down, meaning he still hit the floor at how fast? 53. 53 miles per hour. The dummy was absolutely ripped to shreds. How many GCSEs? Way less sweat.

1:01:09SlamJar:Are you on this side of the table? Honestly, that was dry as a flipping bone. So to answer Jack's question on the... You've talked about that. Hajj just got it a bit sweaty. That's fine. Can you now, Jack, answer your own hot air balloon question based on that? You would fly down in the hot air balloon at 63 miles an hour. Why are you just making up speeds? You would jump at 1.5 miles an hour. Oh my god. Two again. You're jumping out, so you're not confined by the thing. Hang on, I'm just getting there. You would survive. How? You need to be able to jump at close to opposite speed that you're falling.

1:01:53SlamJar:If the fall of the balloon was less than the balloon itself. Why? What? It is. Confused them. Yeah. And then they might give you the point. Yeah. You get the point. Thank you. Nice. It worked. So, elevator of death. Myth. Slammed. Have you ever heard the little saying? It's like a bull in a china shop. Yes. I love that saying. Brilliant. Brilliant. I actually made up a joke once based on that. Go on. And I said, I'm so cautious. I'm like a Chinaman in a bull shop.

1:02:29Why would they be cautious? Don't want to get hit by a bull. Yeah. Because a bull in a China shop. In a bull shop. Because he'd be like treading carefully so as not to upset the bulls. Yeah, it's the opposite, isn't it? Because a bull in a China shop is quite hazard. Ah. You're right. He has bit through his tongue. He can't do it. What did you do?

1:02:52SlamJar:My teeth just slammed shut. That's weird. You're trying to catch a bullet. That was really sad. Them things. Them fucking things. What things? Nothing. What things? Just causing you a lot of issues. Look, you're on the same team. What? The one issue? You're on about the comments? No. Here you are. I'm saying they always... Why are they just randomly doing... Like, that shouldn't be happening, should it? My jaw just went like that. Dickhead. What was I saying? China Minute Bush. Will a ball destroy... Not worth it, was it at all? Will a bull destroy a china shop? Do you think it's possible? Yeah, obviously.

1:03:26SlamJar:They do it in jackass. I've seen it with my own two eyes. Why would it destroy a china shop? Would it not just stand there? No. Well, what are you thinking? Well, first of all, I know a lot about this topic. Okay. Bulls aren't actually attracted to the colour red. Wow. Yeah, they're red-green colourblind. It's actually the movement of the flag that they're attracted to. So am I. Little bull. Little bull. no you just Stevie told me that one on the way up but I said like I was like I've got two myths would you prefer bull in a china shop or bull red if you put bull in a china shop how is it not smashing up the plates it would just chill that's what I can tell you why would it just chill Alfie if you put it in there and left it in there for a week you're going to come back and your stuff's going to be yeah a week but the whole phrase is like if a bull runs through a china shop it's going to smash everything oh if it runs through it will how would it not I think if you just put it in there it's just going to stand there.

1:04:20Why would it start smashing stuff up? It might get scared. So you're saying, yeah, you're saying no. I'm saying potentially.

1:04:26SlamJar:Yeah, exactly. Great. Sit on the fence. Yeah. Okay, how would you test it? I'd put a bull in the china shop. Put it full with cheap china. Yeah. Put the bull in there. See what happens. See what happens. That's not going to hurt anyone. You're doing the same? It's going to hurt the bull actually. Okay, so for this one, they started by making tenge. You and your pig then. You and your fucking pigs. pig at a china shop yeah so this one they did they made 10 shelves from foam board because they wanted to make sure the test itself was safe for the bulls they don't want the bull to hurt itself on the wood wooden shelves they made nice foam ones and then they went to a ranch and they put all the shelves in a bullpen and put and stacked it with all the china yeah crockery yeah so that's so ethical taking it to the bull in the bullpen they did five rows two rows of five like that of um shelves so there was room to run around the outside and there was an aisle down the middle kind of like in a shop and then there's also you could run between all of these as well right they're quite closely packed but the bull could fit in between each one if it wanted to what are your predictions on what happened i think the ball fucked some shit up stevie i think it accidentally knocks over a few bits but i like to think that the ball just walks around they started by letting one bull loose in there.

1:05:44Oh, yeah, that's the phrase. It's not bulls in a china shop. No, I'll tell you why they started with one. Because the first one went in there. He actually seemed to kind of browse. He was looking around at all of it, and he was just moving in between, like weaving in and out as well, not even trying to... So he was like walking through them like there were aisles in a shop. And they thought, this bull doesn't want to do anything. Let's put two in there to play around. The bulls start charging and chasing each other, but fully weave in and out of the shelves. Never touch a shelf, even when playing and chasing each other.

1:06:13And they seem quite like ferocious messing around. I can't believe that. Three balls, same story. They put four balls in there. There's not even that much room to move around in there now. They properly run about and play with each other. They never touch the shelves and there's not a lot of space left in there, but they're so nimble and they just properly avoid them all. Out of the 10 shelves in the whole experiment, one of them was knocked over completely accidentally. It didn't like try and hit it. its bum like brushed it as it passed through and it just tipped it over shout out bulls and you know what sorry bulls yeah because you've been painted by being these clumsy aggressive things yeah you're very mindful of china very mindful of china the material not the place they're only aggressive if they feel threatened and like like we well not us but like matadors and stuff do that to them can we stop fucking with the bull we should stop why is that allowed it just seems

1:07:09SlamJar:It's mental that's allowed. It's mental as well, isn't it? That they, like, if you actually just put a bull versus a man, the bull's going to fuck the man up. Yeah. But they think they're being strong or cool. I don't get it. I know it's a cultural thing. But still it's fucking stupid. Cultural things can be stupid. Yeah. It's one step down from these wankers that go in, I don't know, South Africa or somewhere and shoot lions with these high-ferocity fucking guns. Well, they kill the bulls at the end, don't they? They're twat. Leave him alone. But yeah, watching it, and it was quite cool to watch.

1:07:43Obviously, you'll have to go and try and find it on YouTube or something. But watching all the bulls run around, they look so playful and friendly with each other. It's weird, because it's kind of ingrained in us to think that's aggressive. They look like they're really going for it, and they're just completely dodging all of the china. That's pretty cool. So they're proper in and out, weaving through the aisles. And it's really cool to watch.

1:08:03SlamJar:You should take them to steal a diamond. Yeah. lasers they'd smash it would they well on that the other one i did i haven't written any of it down but they did the the do balls get angry at red thing and as jack said they can't even see the color red because they're getting angry at being agitated yeah it's the movement of the thing and stuff it's like making them think something could attack them or whatever but in that one they were so sure that one of the guys dressed up in a full red suit and stood in the bullpen and it just didn't go near and they ignored him yeah because the way they tested it is that they, because when they put mannequins in there, they put a mannequin in there in red and a mannequin in blue and it attacked the blue one first, then attacked the red one because they think they're in danger if they see a human shape because it's ingrained in them to be scared of us.

1:08:52But then, yeah, when they did the one with the red, they got other people to just, in no colour at all, just to like move around and it would go more towards the people who were moving than the guy in full red. Theory.

1:09:04SlamJar:Slammed. Is that it? I've got time for one more. Give me one more Because I remember last week In the outro You said there was going to be A Breaking Bad one I've been kind of trying to work out What that could be Mythbusters did a Breaking Bad special Can you put a pizza on a roof? Why would that be a myth? Done Okay So I think it was quite soon After Breaking Bad He insults me When I'm just I'm not saying that's my answer I'm just getting there Yeah like you're experimenting With your mind Well the thing is When people normally experiment With their mind They experiment in their mind Yeah but this is a podcast And then say stuff But for the rest of the episode, I'll experiment in my mind.

1:09:39Yeah, nice. Tell a joke in your mind. No, no. You think it in your... That's the racist one. The fact you're laughing. I know, I've got dark sense humour. You think something in your mind, your brain goes, don't say that, then say the good thing. Can you put a peach on a roof, Jack?

1:10:00He's not, he's not, he's not. That's harsh, actually. So the reason they did this like crossover special is because Vince Gilligan, the creator of Breaking Bad, I don't know how many series had been out at this point because the two theories they did are both from season one. Okay. And they like, Aaron Paul's in the episode as well, so he looks young. So Vince Gilligan and Aaron Paul go to meet the Mythbusters because he was, Vince Gilligan, the creator, was asked what show he'd love to do a crossover with and he said Mythbusters. And it was because Walt and Jesse always get into trouble in the show, obviously, but they normally always use science to get out of these.

1:10:31Science, bitch. Yeah, to get out of these scenarios. So they'd get people people write in or like complain online being like, that's not possible. So they were like, let's show that it is possible. Okay.

1:10:45SlamJar:So, Oh, maybe when the Gus gets half his face blown off. That's a spoiler. Series one. If you haven't watched it, it's been out 12, 13, 14 years. Series one. Yeah. Both of these are from series one. I've only got one of them written down. The one I haven't done is in series one, there's a moment where Walt gets stuck in a room with loads of drug dealers and he throws something at the ground and it basically explodes everything. 2K? Yeah. Yeah, it just, that scene's cool. They test, apparently the stuff that he used is so like dangerous. They had to get a guy to specially make it for him. The guy who made it for him called Jesse.

1:11:22How weird is that? Well weird. They had to go to like a thing. They do it. Nothing happens. It blows up, but nowhere near what they think. Right. It's just not, and you can't throw it at the ground either. What is the drug there, exploding? I can't remember what it is. it looks like crystal meth because that's how he gets it into the room. He's like, oh, you think this is that? But it's just a chemical thing. It just doesn't work. It didn't work at all. This one, the one I've got is, can hydrofluoric acid melt through a crime scene? So you may remember in season one, Walt and Jesse need to get rid of a drug dealer and they put his body in a bath and Jesse pours in loads of hydrofluoric acid to melt the body.

1:12:00But then in the show, the bath then melts, it melts through the bath, melts through the floor and the ceiling and falls through to the floor below. This is in Breaking Bad, yeah. That's in Breaking Bad season one. That's everything we've just been talking about. Yeah.

1:12:12SlamJar:No, but you made it sound like that was in Mythbusters. No, I said Walt and Jesse. This is all in the series. I think, what am I saying? Do you think it's possible in the real world? Could hydrofluoric acid melt a body down first, dispose of a body, and then could it go through the bath, through the floor, the lino, the ceiling? I think yes, because I don't think they'd do the show. exactly what I was going to say it's such a big plot point I think they would have at least had a look can we actually do that before doing it how would you test it? put a pig in a bath he's there I think I would yeah literally pig in a bath?

1:12:52no it's not is it pig in a bath? no it's not no it's not

1:12:56SlamJar:I told you I was going to have a worldview today he's done it what? I can't was it actually pig in a bath? Okay, so before they get to the big experiment, hydrofluoric acid is so toxic, even a tiny amount of it on your skin could be deadly. So to test them if they had to go to an actual chemist, he got some concentrated, some of the concentrated corrosive safely. First, before a big experiment, they got seven bowls and in each bowl they put a piece of ceramic, a piece of wood, a piece of cast iron for the bathtub, no frogs, a piece of lino, a piece of drywall, a piece of steel, and a piece of meat.

1:13:35Frog, sperm. Pig. Pig. A small piece in each of these bowls, and then they poured 100 milliliters of hydrofluoric acid into each of those and left it for eight hours to see how the acid would react with each of these things that it needs to break down for this scene to work. Yeah. After eight hours, what happened to each one of those things? They dissolved. Apart from the pig. No, they all... It was only the pig that dissolved. I think it's happened how it's happened in the show. after eight hours the drywall almost fully dissolved everything else pretty much still just as it was a little bit of damage but barely anything and the pig the pig melted a little bit but not not loads so because of that there wasn't much of a change they decided that they wanted to test if any acid was strong enough so that isn't that is i think it's because fluoride is known to be like the most reactive thing but when they mix it with hydrogen the way they mix doesn't then make it as reactive as it could be it did myth it did bust the myth it busted the myth of the show however they then went can any acid do it hydrofluoric acid sounds like it's gonna be the worst but it's not they then get sulfuric acid but they mix it with a chemical that wouldn't even tell you on the show because they say we're not going to help you dissolve like dissolve a body so they they blur it out and they just say our secret ingredient mix sulfuric acid with that on this one they think it's so powerful before even they don't even do the little test they just go let's just do it so what do they do?

1:15:08Pig in a bath full pig dead pig huge bath dead pig always dead pig never a live pig they're not taking jaws off alive pigs we're not putting alive pigs in bath they created a whole rig outside in the desert bath floor undercarriage which has like a thing just in case everything melts through to kind of replicate the show as best as possible. They pour, I think it was like 30 gallons of the sulfuric acid into the bath. It starts bubbling up and melting stuff and huge smoke and everything straight away. What happened after they looked back at it once the smoke cleared? Pig gone. Pig nearly completely gone.

1:15:46Small parts of pig left, but mostly gone. So those people there could do it. That's why they said they're not telling you what the mixture is, because people could genuinely, potentially. What part of the pig was left? you couldn't see. It was like little bits. The whole bath water had gone black and gross and just little bits of lumps. And the bath one as well then? Bath. So they did it in the first one, the steel bath didn't get affected at all. Not the steel bath. What was it made of? Cast iron didn't really get affected at all. So then one quick test they did do with the sulfuric acid is got the three different types of bath, which is cast iron, steel, and then fiberglass, which is what most of our baths are made out of.

1:16:25Fiberglass got affected quite a lot. so final test fiberglass bath pig gone fiberglass bath looked crazy burnt and extremely damaged but then nothing to the floor or anything so flipping heck myth theory slammed both of the breaking bads when they tested slam not possible in real life oh nothing's real vince gilligan and aaron paul on the episode were both like he kept going artistic license you think you saw that but the bath was made of cheese. He just kept saying things like that.

The Theory Slammers (AKA SlamJar and Slamwise Gandhi) are once again donning their clever clogs caps and busting some myths inspired by TV show ‘Mythbusters’.

Is yawning contagious? Can a human catch a bullet in their teeth? Could a penny dropped from the Empire State Building kill someone? What pwould happen if you let a bull run loose in a china shop? Can acid dissolve a dead body like in Breaking Bad? What if an elevator you’re riding suddenly plummets… can you save yourself by jumping at the very last second?

All these myths have actually been tested on Mythbusters, so the boys can debate whether it’s possible and theorise which chaotic experiments were used to test it, and Stevie can reveal the truth!

Plus Alfie has an embarrassing LinkedIn confession, and Jaack admits to an INSANE motorway driving habit…
