In short
Scott “Shaggy” Williams, a PDC darts player, discusses his career, walk-on music, darts technique, dartitis (performance anxiety), and personal stories (including tabloid coverage after a curling trip). The episode also includes a major Happy Hour announcement: Scott is replacing Robbie.
Guest background
Scott Williams is described as a top character in darts, currently world number 44, and known for “happy hour” style humour and crowd/opponent antics (e.g., giving Luke Humphries the middle finger). He’s from Boston, Lancashire, played football (including FA Cup games for Boston Town) before taking up darts seriously around his son’s birth (2017–2018), and qualified for the World Championships via county/BDO pathways, debuting at the O2 in January 2020.
Key claims
He says dartitis is real—he describes it as being unable to release the dart due to mental blocks. He argues top players aim just above treble 20 because darts naturally dip. He prefers big crowd venues like Alexandra Palace over “floor” events with less atmosphere.
Notable examples
Alexander Palace in the Hall of Fame; tabloid headlines about his “poorly penis” after curling in Zurich; his school “Scotty 2 Hottie worm” prank; his walk-on shifting from My Chemical Romance to K-pop Demon Hunters’ “Golden,” and considering Alter Bridge’s “Metalingus.”

Automatic transcript. May contain errors.0:00Yes guys, it's another guest episode and weirdly today the guest we have on has the same nickname as me. What do people call me Stevie? Buckteafuglyprick. No, the other one. Gingernobhead. Begins with S. Sausage. They call me Shaggy. No one calls you Shaggy. Everyone's always, they say, look at him, look at jack there going off in the into the night to go shagging they say graveyard again is it fuck this is the worst intro ever but today on the show we have the uh current world number 44 dance player it's getting niche guys it's getting niche uh humphrey's little mbg tick today we've got scott williams however there's a reason we get him on one because he's bloody funny all right He's known to be one of the best characters in the world of Dark.
0:56He's happy hour humour through and through as well. Yeah, for anyone who's not seen Scott play, he adds a bit of pizzazz. He's giving Luke Humphries the middle finger. He's giving the crowd the middle finger. He's doing loads. But there's also an extra reason to why he's on the show today that will become clear at some point during this episode. We have a huge announcement to make. You may have already seen it on social media, depending on what order you're watching it. He's replacing Robbie Yeah Yeah Robbie's dead And we thought Who should replace him? Scott Williams From Boston Replace a shagger with shaggy I like it Bucktooth ginger brick That's a shame isn't it?
1:38Nasty kids He didn't even look that ginger

Hello guys, welcome back to Jack Makes Happy Hour podcast. Stevie, what do I love more in the world than anything else in the world ever? Me? Second to that. Darts. Darts. And today I am buzzing because not only is it a fantastic darts player sat opposite us at the Virgin Table.
3:01Actually, it's the lowest ranked darts player we've ever had on the show. Fantastic, thank you. Is that a nice way to introduce him? I'm just about in the top 64. Shaggy, how are you, mate? Good to see you. Thank you for having me. Yeah, so like we said, we call this the Virgin Table. He calls this the Virgin Table. Yeah, it's a big yellow V. However, your darting nickname's Shaggy. It is. Are you a shagger? Not anymore. It had to be married. Happily married. Oh, because you're married. I thought because of the news articles going around at the moment. The news articles of my poorly penis. Yeah.
3:38Have you heard about that? What's happened to your penis? I have not asked a guest about their penis that quickly, other than Danny D. Yeah. Yeah, and it's the opposite end of the scale as well. It's tiny. I mean, who's Danny D? Sorry. So what have you done? You had your knob? Apparently so, yeah. So I went curling. I was in Switzerland at the weekend, Zurich, doing an exhibition. And the guys, actually I'm wearing the merch for some reasons today. It's just a nice hoodie. Doucher of Zurich, they took me to do some curling. Like on the ice? Yeah, exactly on the ice. And that was a huge mistake.
4:15I absolutely hurt my legs so much. I've never seen a curly use their knob before. Well, that's the thing. So I posted a little video on TikTok. Yeah. And it was just about, say, my legs hurt, my back hurts, my penis hurts. I think I said something like, I've got it stuck in the zipper, but that's a different story. Yeah. And then a couple of news outlets, tabloid news outlets, have just gone crazy. And just literally everywhere, the dark player's penis hurts from curling. and I was like so it's all blown out of proportion massively out of proportion right that's funny because when I was writing Scott's episode I googled like Scott Williams news and there was four articles from that day and I was like oh fucking hell what's he done now looked and it was like hurts his knob hurt my cock yeah I didn't it's fine it's alright yeah it's small but it's fine it still works it's good to have you on here today mate we've got an announcement coming up at the end of the show we might allude to it a little bit before that but Stevie and I are super excited for this Very excited.
5:15Fans of happy hour, fans of darts, fans of shaggy, you're in for a treat at the end. All four of them for me. We always start with the same question. We want you, Scott, to imagine a place called the happy hour Hall of Fame. You can submit any item into the Hall of Fame to be forever immortalized, something that means something to you. It can be an object, it can be a place, a person, a feeling. It's pretty much the opposite to the old Room 101, if you ever saw that. Yeah, the complete opposite. Yeah. I don't want to get rid of something, I want to keep something forever and ever. Yeah. That's a great question.
5:45I wish you'd have told me about this before. I never thought. You do normally prep guests for this one. The only question you normally prep guests for. He prepped me a better load of others. Not this one.
5:56I'm going to come out with... I like it when people think it's serious. I think just because it's been a massive part of my career, I think Alexander Palace. The place itself. What an answer. It's such an iconic place. And for me, I've been there for the last four years, I think. And I had that really good run a few years ago. And it's just such a crazy place. You always seem to perform up there, don't you? Yeah, it's just I'm an exhibitionist. I'm a voyeur, as they would say. And I just love playing in front of a crowd. And that's why I hate playing on the floor. In the floor events, I just love the place.
6:35So anywhere. Do you find that when you play the floor events, are you a little bit bored? Yeah, massively. There's no crowd. you've got a few guests it's quiet there's no one there if you give it the old please be quiet really they tell you do they it's like the library yeah people have got fined and banned for it why? because that's our professional that's where we do our professional stuff that's where the behind the scenes stuff happens I don't know but it's just trying to be because there's a lot of games going on it's not just like the one game going on the TV you've got to try and respect everyone right, okay, makes sense Ali Pali, we love it as well don't we I've only ever been to Ali Pali for the darts I've never been there for any other event so to me that is darts exactly that reason, to me that's all darts is as well, I know it's got an ice skating rink which I've obviously got a K-State and a big theatre side but yeah, Ali Pali is just an iconic place and I'm so glad they're staying there as well I'm just moving it into the Great Hall instead.
7:41Yeah. Do you think it will feel different in that room or not? I don't even know where the Great Hall is in there. It's where all the food trucks are in that. I guess you don't go out there, do you? No, not really. Dave Allen, the media guy from PDC, did kind of explain it to me how it was going to work and how it was all shifting around. Yeah. But to us, the players area is still going to stay the same. Right. We're still going to be downstairs in the slums where we looked after. So, yeah, to me, it's not going to make a difference. As long as the walk on, the noise is all the same. As long as the prize money stays the same or goes up, I ain't bothered.
8:17For us, it's like, for the punters, it's so special, isn't it? Because it's Christmas time. Everyone's in a good mood. That walk up to the palace, we're usually lucky. When we go, we usually do the afternoon and the evening session. So we have a little break down and go to the spoons down in the break. We've got it all going on. It's great. Did you go there as a punter before you was a punter? Never. The only place I ever went as a punter was the Grand Slam in Wolverhampton. Me and a friend took our wives slash girlfriends or whatever it was at the time. We went there and then the year after I was playing in it.
8:49I wasn't even playing proper PDC stuff at the time. And then the year after I was in it. Wow. That was weird. That was nice and weird. I've only ever really been to either support friends and players like Josh or Rob. Yeah. And that's only since I've been in darts. Phenomenal. Great answer. So the Ali Pali is going in the Hall of Fame. That's the first time that's been suggested, I think. And a great answer. I like it. Okay, some quick fires to get to know Shaggy. Stevie, kick us off. Let's go. If you could have an unlimited of any one meal for the rest of your life, it'll give you all the nutritional value you want, what you're going for and why.
9:20If you had not said that last part of the sentence, it's bacon. Just bacon. Just give me bacon. I literally on the train here, bacon sandwich. Did you? And I was like, it's cooked perfectly. I only had one. I was fuming. What? Hang on. It was cooked on the train? yeah oh fuck me every train bacon roll I've ever got has been shite very good it was I really enjoyed it what train is this what service it was the LNER we never get that do we greater anglia need to step the fuck up bacon bacon bacon everything to do with bacon yeah that's spot it's obviously very good for you as well in this make believe world oh yes yes if you could speak to any animal and ask it a question and have it reply but then it just goes back to speaking like fucking like an idiot like an idiot like the animal speaks normally.
10:07Is that what you think of animals when they don't speak English? Moo, fucking idiot. It's not that they're not speaking English. Yeah, but why are you calling them... Okay, human then. Okay, human. Why are you calling them an idiot for not speaking human? No, they sound dumb, don't they? I've got a cat and it sounds... You haven't got a cat! I have got a cat! He's stolen his neighbour's cat. It's not his cat. I mean, cats will decide whether you want it or not. Thank you. Thank you. Cats are assholes. Yeah, they just... So they decide. She doesn't need those now. Well, he's just called her an arsehole.
10:40Yeah, well, I thought... Or cats. No, there's no... Or cats. They are. So what animal would you ask? That was my answer. Cats, why are you arseholes? That was the answer. Was it really? Yeah. Well, yeah, cats. Have you got cats then? No. Not really an animal fan. I watched the thing with Rufus, and Rufus wasn't a big fan. Well, he's going to get pelted, but I'm not a big animal. Oh, you're not? We have a dog. Not a fan of it? No, I don't like it, but we have it. It's a great family thing. To have as a family, it's awesome. What's it called? It's called Woody. Right. So it's very Disney orientated around the house.
11:21My son's called Buzz. I've got an Aurora. And we have my daughter, that is. Just not a random one. And then the dog's called Woody. Are you a big Disney fan? I'm not. The wife is. Right. So obviously, I don't get a choice. Okay, number three, Stevie. What's one thing that really pisses you off that shouldn't annoy you as much as it does? I've got two. I've got one darts related, which you'll see why it's funny. You personally. And then non-dire related one. The non-dire related one is lorry drivers trying to overtake another lorry. Thank you. On the M11, on the A1, on any dual carriageway, don't do it.
12:03Yeah. You can't. that's why there's so much traffic is because that guy's trying to take that guy and they're both restricted at 56 and 57 mile an hour. It makes no difference which one of these lorries is in front of the other. It's the bane of our existence doing this journey, especially Norwich. It's all just two lanes. So every time you're just stuck behind lorries. That's probably why we relate today. Yeah. Thank you. There's bloody lorries. And the dance related one is double tops. It's not double tops. It's tops or it's double 20. Why? because it's the the tops is that part of the board is the double oh yeah yeah so it's double 20 or it's the very top part of the board which is tops what if I'm saying double tops because I'm going for an 80 checkout that's okay I like that yeah big fan of that I actually did tops tops tops the other day in a game okay you've one up me there thank you not that I've ever hit but no that's fine yeah double tops is fine if you're going for 80 checkout but if you've got 40 left it's double 20 or it's tops.
13:04Yeah, I accidentally say double tops sometimes. Everyone does. It's what happens. You're lost, aren't you? No, I thought double tops meant 80. No. He's saying like on a 40 checkout, people are saying double tops. He's on for double tops. He's going for double tops. Oh, right. No, I thought that's just if someone's going two darts in there. But you can just say tops. That's the right way. That's the right way. Yeah. No, doubled, yeah. Okay, I'm with you. You're allowed three celebrities round yours for a dinner, Shaggy. Who are you picking and why? This is a tough one. this was a tough one because I was either, do I have a great time or do I learn stuff?
13:39So Donald Trump is number one. He has to be. What's your reason? Because he's an absolute nightmare. Genuinely, you don't know what's going to come out of that. Do you want that at your dinner? Yes. Yeah? Absolutely do. I just want him to... To be fair, I would love to sit there and look at him. Do you know what I mean? And just see what he's about. And just see what he's going to do next. Yeah. Because you never know, do you? Yeah. Alan Shearer yeah I'm a big Newcastle fan couldn't imagine those two in a room together yeah conversations riveting we're going through we've got the Cluedo out and everything and the last one was a really the really tough one but I think I decided on the way here and I can't remember who it is it was someone silly but I'm a big I'm a big comedy fan oh yeah Shane Gillis oh wow okay comedian yeah absolutely hilarious is he your number one comedian is he's probably my favourite is he?
14:34yeah he's probably my favourite I've seen a lot of stuff recently and he's just kind of coming out of the war but it's a real random three to have at a dinner table I could have said Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini that would have been that would have been some dinner you've got Trump to kind of cover that side of things and they're already around mine so never mind I'll have a big dinner next time and then the final one Stevie what's one thing not many people know about you? you seem quite an open book I've heard this I am so open I've listened to you on TalkSport. You're good in interviews. Well, within five minutes, we were talking about your penis.
15:07Not even five minutes. It was 30 seconds. First question. Scott, how's your cock? Yeah, literally, I'm such an overbook. I have a large collection of aftershaves and colognes. I collect them. So yeah, every time I go on a plane or there's a duty-free or I find a thing, then I buy one. You're a big fan of duty-free, are you? Can I smell you? Yeah, sure. You can. What part are you going to smell? Yeah, it's nice. What have you gone for today? Today is Tuxedo by East Saint Laurent. Nice. It's a very, it's part of the niche line. It's a very nice. He's up there with the nicest smelling guests. Yeah.
15:50He's up there. Over Goldstein? Goldstein would be fucking fuming if we put him. We'll leave Andy. Andy can have that one. I'm trying to think if we had any other nice smelling people. You don't often ask to smell them specifically. No, true. Or ask them about their cot. That's how little we respect you, Scott. I appreciate that. Now, Scott, you're from Boston. I am. Not USA. Not USA. Boston, Lancashire. We always start with asking our guests to, if Stevie and I came for a day, what would we do?
16:23That is the sinister laugh. Probably get high on crack. Okay. Yeah. before we come? Boy, you're there. There's plenty of them about. No, we've got one of the biggest churches slash cathedrals and stuff in Europe. Right. Boston Stump. That's probably a riveting day out. If you're on crack, it will be. Argos. You've got an Argos. There we go. Yeah, yeah. We've still got one. We're the lucky ones. You were born then. You still live there. Yeah. So something's keeping you there. The crack. And that's the crack. The crack. The crack. No, it's got shitter and shitter as the years have gone by. So bad.
17:01What was it like for you as a kid? Oh, pretty shit, but it's like... Start from the bottom, that was still at the bottom. He's still at the bottom. So it's just getting worse and worse. And there's shops closing, more like casinos and... Not even casinos, like slot machines. Cashinos, them shit ones. Just more and more of them just appearing out of nowhere. And then waterstones, that's about it. Really? Is there any other... we're calling you a famous person. Oh my God. Thank you very much. Are there any other famous people from Boston? Yeah, Callum Johnson, a boxer, Commonwealth gold medalist boxer.
17:38Nice. There is a famous bloke called Jonathan Van Tam, who used to work for the government, and he's a big Boston fan and stuff like that. Do you know this because you've been on the wiki to see where you wrote that? No, it's just one of these things I remember, but I'm friends with Callum on Facebook. Right. And he's always trying to make this town better. He's always got an idea. I think he's just opening a new fitness and boxing gym. Oh, nice. In Boston, which is great. Nice. Other than that, Rob Cross has just moved there. Has he? He has. Well, he moved there about three years ago. What, to be closer to you?
18:15I hope not. I hope not. No, he's just moved up. So he used to live in Hastings and it was just so far away from everywhere. Right. and our manager also lives in the area. Oh, right. So it was a case of, like, we practiced together, we're, you know, managers there. Yeah. Like, Boston is half hour from Grantham and half hour from Peterborough, so it's like, it's so easy just to get everywhere from there. Oh, fair enough. Him and the family all moved up. Do you meet up with them a lot? Yeah, yeah, we see each other. Go down the Argos? More and more with Argos every year. We want to, we just kind of type in their little iPads and hope for the best.
18:50Fuck off, is there iPads there? Yeah, iPads there. in Argos you can only get them in Sainsbury's now can't you yeah we got a real legit Argos you've got a standalone yeah I didn't want to brag I told you I didn't want to brag we're going we're going to Boston you got little pens no they don't do pens anymore because they got the iPads and you got to use the scrolls last time I went in an Argos it was one of them like imagine like an old typewriter yeah with the big buttons big buttons yeah but you've moved up in the world this is what the guys want to see yeah the fans the punters they want to see they want to hear about the Argos as we have in the area.
19:23I will be honest, usually when people design us like an itinerary from their city, we get really excited and we go, we're going to go, we're going to do it. We'll probably give that one a miss. Please. Yeah, I'm not too excited for Boston. I'd appreciate it if you did. So you went to school in Boston as well, did you? Boston Grammar School, yeah. What's a young Shaggy like at school? He was an arsehole, unless it was maths or sport, which ironically now is perfect. I never ever wanted to do darts it was never something my parents played but growing up at school I was always playing football always you know table tennis you were a goalie weren't you I was always a goalie so I played for tens of decades couple of decades I was going to say tens of years and then a couple of decades tens of decades it was over a hundred amalgamated the two this one so I played like 20 years playing football and then darts just appeared I realised I was getting fat and slow right And then what's the perfect alternative?
20:23Drinking excessively and chucking metal things that are like a board on the wall that's made out of vegetables. Vegetables? Yeah, it's like a sizal, it's like a plant. Is it? Yeah. Fucking, I didn't know that. The board's like a plant, yeah, sizal is like an African plant. So if you leave that board up, are you going to come back later and it's going to be good? Yeah, you can do it. if you leave it in the wrong places, you get mould and it grows and bubbles and stuff like that. Yeah, it's horrible when it's not left in the right temperatures and stuff like that. Could you cook it and eat a dartboard?
20:57I probably wouldn't do that. I'm fed up. It laughs everywhere because that was ridiculous. That was stupid. I'm so, like, unclued up on dartboards. I don't really understand why some are better than others. There's been going around, like, viral at the moment for the bounce-outs constantly, hasn't it? That's just the manufacturers fighting off against each other. Everyone knows Target Tor board is the best board that you can buy on the market. Team sponsored by? I'm sponsored by Target. To be fair, I've got the Target board up at mine. You've got the same, haven't you? Yeah, I'm still on the Blade 6.
21:33I don't know. I couldn't tell you why it's Target. Maybe it's Tor. Yeah, cool. That's fine. That's all I need to hear. So going back to school. Yeah. What's the naughtiest thing Shaggy ever did that he's prepared to admit on this podcast?
21:47I tell you what, I was never really naughty. How were you an arsehole but not naughty? So I was really... What's the word? I'm trying to find the right word because if I don't, I'll make myself look a tit again. So what I do is I would always take the piss out of a teacher. I'd always do something to... I was the class clown. Right. It's what I was. Right. Especially from GCSE 9, 10, 11, I was the class clown. Did you get good GCSEs then? Okay. Yeah, I was okay. Yeah. Yeah, mainly Cs and Bs, A in sport and maths and whatever. But yeah, so in a maths lesson, one of the teachers really hated me.
22:23And before the lesson started, we got all the tables down in a row and I did the Scotty 2 Hottie worm all the way down it. And then I got sent to the headmaster's office. And you carried on doing the worm down there. I didn't, but I probably could have done them. And then the teacher started crying and left a week later because I took the piss out of her too much. Oh, no. That's similar to my story. You've both made a teacher cry. Right, we've made teachers cry. There's a few of us that just thought, as part of our plan at the beginning of the year, find the weakest teacher and get them to leave.
22:59I don't think doing the worm's that bad. No, it wasn't, but it was just everything else that I'd kind of do anything to just get away from school and doing work. I remember just before we finished and completed for the GCSEs in 11, Um, it's probably common everywhere, but we'd collect eggs, flour and bottles of water and someone snitched. What, you were making pancakes? Well, the headmaster's gone through and done all the lockers and like gone in mine. And I've got like four dozen eggs, five kilo of flour and like a thing of water. And he goes, what are you doing this weekend? I'm off to my aunties.
23:39He goes, are you going to bake her a cake? And I was like, yeah, really fucking big one. And literally brought this box of all my stuff and planted it on the table. And I was like, is there any chance I can take that with me? No. What were you doing with the... I was going to... We was going to destroy people's lives. That was not the sentence I expected to come out. That would have been... Yeah, the teachers were going to get screwed. Those little silly jokes, putting the old vinyl... the cling film over the toilets before we left, literally the day before. You were like Dennis the fucking Menace.
24:12Yeah, kind of. Yeah. Just little tiny little silly things. Did you have a slingshot? I didn't have a slingshot. Right. Well, so we know about you that your walk-on is, is it still My Chemical Romance? Well, I've kind of gone back and forth. I started using My Chemical Romance. Yeah. Firstly, it's a wicked song. Yeah. It's a real good song, but it's a song for suicide. It's an unofficial song for suicide. Right. And I lost a couple of friends because of suicide. just as I started playing darts. So it was that. So it's like a nod to them. So it's a nod to them. And as well as it's liked, people don't know it.
24:51So I changed it at the World Championships to Golden for the K-pop Demon Hunters. Oh, okay. Yeah, and that was quite good, but I'm changing it again. What, you changed it to something new? Yeah, I'm going to go for Metalingus by Alter Bridge, which is Edge's walk-on song. I don't know it. See, all of these songs, they make me think, and I might be wrong here, but they make me think that you at school, maybe Further Education was a bit of an emo kid? Absolutely. Yeah? I still am. Okay. Golden doesn't lean into that. No, I've got kids, but it's actually a tune. It is a bagger. Actually, the whole show's decent.

25:26I loved it. It was great. I've never seen it. You're not going to watch it, are you? You've not got a kid. The playlist is very, very good. It's good. Some tunes on there. I did a bit of research on it, because when we do the Big Fat Quiz of the Year, I'm researching them. It's like three women. Yeah. Yeah. who are animated and they take on the world through music. Against demons. Through music? Through music. It helps. The music helps. They're a K-pop band who are fighting demons. Yeah. Right. And their music is like, when they're using their music, they can attack. Is it for, what's the main demographic?
26:00Kids. Kids? I would say kids. Right. But it is very good. Very popular. Netflix is the biggest thing ever. Is it? Yeah, it's the most watched show ever. Is it? Yeah. I didn't know I think it just won awards as well yeah yeah did it Golden did yeah so let's go back to you being an emo yeah how old emo as well were you like metal chain going down baggy jeans metal chain Linkin Park hoodie like I went through a stage of dyeing my hair blue and black did you yeah now I never trust anyone with blue hair that brought back issues Converse not back then because I was poor right But I had like shoezines version.
26:42Did you? Yeah. Did you colour them in? No. No. What was that? Layout pens? Ever? Ever, yeah. Could you skateboard? No, I was awful at that. I could roller skate, if that's cool. That doesn't feel as cool, does it? No, it doesn't. No, I could skateboard now. Never went around on a skateboard or anything like that. Did you used to chat up girls on MSN? So, again, I was poor. What, so you didn't have MSN? So I didn't have the internet, yeah. Oh, really? Yeah, I'd never had the internet. until I moved out. Did you? Yeah, yeah. You're from a really poor background or area? Yeah, it was just a weird one because my parents never had awful jobs and they always had money.
27:19It was just like when internet was really coming in, it wasn't something they see an advantage in. Never had Sky, never had the internet, never had anything. So all the porn I had to get was from school. Didn't ask. Well, it was being on my cock and stuff today, so I might as well carry on. so yeah literally a floppy disk floppy disk in the computer at school fucking 13 years old turned into a hard drive it's a good joke i appreciate it so yeah because i remember my granddad used to buy me like 50 floppy disks i thought you were What a boy. Yeah, I know. My side track, but my cousin's grandad gave him porn, didn't he?
28:11Lubed volume three it was. Still got it somewhere. He gave it, my cousin gave it to me. I used to keep it in Frogger, you know, PS2. So now it's somewhere someone's bought that. Someone's bought that PS2 secondhand. They've opened that and gone, that's not Frogger. What's going on here? so you would get the floppy this take them into school yeah and download porn on the official school computer yeah would you yeah you'd have a oh yeah you have a proxy then did you no i don't know what that means i think that might have been the naughtiest thing you've done at school no no no that was that was that was hidden well you never got caught never got caught proxies were then at school the computers would all have filters so you couldn't go on anything bad and a proxy would basically bypass that it was like an old school vpn yeah wasn't it yeah no nothing like that for us so so what was uh what was the dream for a young emo uh scott williams was it to be a footballer yeah that that doesn't really tie in much does it like the emo and the football no i can't remember anyone from it was one or the other you either like football or you were weird like that yeah don't have to be weird to be like emo he had chains hanging off his yeah Yeah, and blue hair.
29:26And blue hair. And my wallet was hanging off my chain. And I'd never had anything in the wallet. Just like, it was a wallet, right? Just looks cool. Which I probably got from Boston Market. So you wanted to be a footballer? Footballer every day of the week. It was like from the age of six, seven, eight, when I first started playing. It was like, that's all I wanted to do. That's all I wanted to do. What were you doing? Sunday leagues and stuff? Yeah, I started playing the usual, you know, Sundays, training on a Friday, Saturday, playing for kids football, et cetera, et cetera. And then I started playing adults football at 16.
29:58And I went from being a goalkeeper to playing up front somewhere. It's a big jump. I played in FA Cup games. Have you? Yeah, for Boston Town. And not high up games like prelim games, but I played for Boston Town. So you're a good player then? Propel Fitness Water with Gatorade electrolytes, zero sugar and vitamins. Yeah, I'm a better goalkeeper than an outfield player because I'm too tall and too gangly, really. at the time you wouldn't think it now but yeah you'd score goals in that would you yeah yeah I scored loads of goals I wouldn't have thought you was a good footballer that's not weird is it yeah I played like from it was weird because I would I would play on a Saturday in goal for the men's team and then a Sunday I'd play on the wing for the under 18s fucking hell 21s and it was like a bit back so but I've got I've got a friend as well back home called Ricky Drury who he'd probably appreciate a mention Now, he's famous for scoring a no-head kick in the FA Cup.
32:43He's a goalkeeper. He played, yeah. So he scored an FA Cup goal. Who's for? Last minute over. I want to say it was Whole Beach United. Right. I could be wrong. Yeah. But because he's just a well-known guy around there. Yeah. But he took the piss out of me saying he was more famous than me because he had more views on YouTube. Oh, you can actually... Oh, he can watch it. Yeah, the goal's there. So what's he done? He's charged up last minute. So he's gone up last minute for a corner. and the ball's like being swung in from the halfway line and he's overhead kicked it in. That's like a script from a film, isn't it?
33:19Goalkeeper, last minute, FA Cup, overhead kick. It's mad. That's like shouting soccer all over again. Yeah, yeah, it is. It really is. So do you remember, talk us through all those years ago when you first picked up a set of darts. Do you remember it or was it so naturally sort of bled into your life? My parents played so often. it was my dad my dad played two nights a week my mum played in ladies league once a week and then she would play in the men's league as well and you know two or three nights a week they're playing darts so were they good then yeah for locally players my mum and dad were both very good at darts but it was never someone I was really interested in because I'd rather I was about to say go out fingering I love that you've stopped yourself and then you've still decided to say it yeah I'd rather go out either football training or doing stuff.
34:07But this is like 15, 14, 15. I love that he still said it. He stopped himself. Oh my word. Goalkeeper, darts player, fingerer. Are there anything those grubby little mitts can't do? No. Have you got big hands? Not really. Can I compare them? I have sweaty hands, sorry. Oh, you have got quite big hands. We've got pretty similar hands. Yeah, you have. Look at this, the synergy here. We've been the big. Max Maiden haven't. Wow. So there was no sort of like real moment. You didn't sort of like pick up the darts. But do you remember the moment when, you said you never loved darts, but do you remember the moment when you started to fall in love with that?
34:46Yeah, it was a hobby I took up when my son was born, 2017, 2018. And it's just like, me and my wife had a reasonably darts house and I was like, oh, I went and helped a mate out at the local pub. Yeah. And I was like, I really enjoy this. I love the social side of it, more than anything. But it was just a game I was just naturally good at. And I started off being okay and okay, and then I started getting better. And then all of a sudden, I'm playing Super League and county for Cambridgeshire. And then I've decided I want to take the next step. So through the way that the county system used to work, not so much now, is when the BDO existed, you could qualify for the World Championships via your county system.
35:32Right. And I did that. I won a total of 36 games in a row on four different occasions to then play what was then Lakeside move to the O2 in 2020. So I literally started at the end of 2018 was when the first lot of qualifiers were. So I had to do a load of qualifiers within the team, won the team one, went to then the county one, won the county one. Then I had to go to the regional one, which is in Gainsborough. and then I had to then go to do the actual one in Essex at Circus Tavern or just outside Circus Tavern. Fucking hell. So it was the end of 2018 and you played your first world championships when?
36:11In 2020, January the 4th, 2020. That's a quick turnaround. That's just over a year. Yeah. When you say you were naturally good at it, how good are you talking like from start? Like when my first ever Super League game, I averaged 75. Fuck off. Yeah. And I've been playing like a year or so properly. So I play a lot, especially now. Not a lot, but I'd say probably a weekly average of probably like five hours, right? It's probably a fair amount of money. More than me. I've probably been playing that for maybe four or five years. I still don't average over 45. Why is that? It'll be the, first, the ability.
36:55Thank God I'm good at being there. it's like he's just gone basically you're shit yeah no anyone can get better it's just like your practice routines have to be the right thing you have to practice the right things you have to do the right things you have to put the time and the effort into losing and getting it wrong first like i'd lost plenty of locally games i lost you know just being around um but then i kind of started winning everything and i got the i got the hunger for winning all the time yeah and i'd never lost very often local league I'd go around the month prior the December prior to the the O2 I went and did 21 competitions from everywhere from I've gone up to Lincoln Derby I've drove and taken a friend gone down to Bury gone everywhere and I won 20 of them and I lost in the final to my friend who I drove in the other one so that's really that got me going and then I just wasn't very good on TV for the first time.
37:57So I don't really know how to articulate this question, right? But is there like a nuanced sort of tip that you can give someone, right? So for example, last night I was playing, knowing you were coming on today, and I was trying to think of this question. So when I'm throwing, like forget like the throw, the technique, everything, right? Where I'm looking at on the board, yeah? I'm looking at that treble 20 and I'm throwing it, right? And my dart's going too low every time. So then I start to think, well if I aim between the tops and the treble bed maybe they'll dip in where are you looking? I want to know the specifics of it me personally probably most professionals we probably look just above the treble 20, just above the wire just because we know naturally the dart's going to go downwards so we aim just above the treble 20 and hope it lands in there but obviously we've perfected over the last however long we've been playing when the release is, how quick it comes up to hear when I release.
38:56Some people count. Some people, I went back to my challenge stores a couple of years ago and I was singing a song. Now, I don't know what song it was. I can't remember. I remember that day I just sang the same song over and over and over and over again. And it would always be the same bit. As I'm walking up to the Rocky, I'd sing the same bit and I'd just release the same part of the song every time. Like a metronome. Probably the same chorus. yeah like a metronome yeah and it's just that's what got stuck in my head so wow um so it was just so silly like that yeah it was a popular song at the time but it's like a catchy thing that i just like yeah i bet it was passing let it go no it wasn't i i'm fascinated by this i can't remember which company does it you'll probably say target but the the the tracker thing that you see at the minute with the lines on the oh yeah no i don't know i don't know i've never seen that i've seen it obviously yeah it's got mental on social media yeah it does nothing for you because it means nothing really yeah so for anyone who doesn't know what we're talking about people can side put the camera facing them sideways and it will track their throw and there'll be like a line mapping where their arm's gone why does it do nothing for you because your first the way the way you come up for your first dart is going to be completely different to the way you come up for second and third dart is it now where you where you hold the dart where where it comes up to and the stopping point, your aiming point, that's important.
40:18Yeah. But like you starting, starting at your belly, your waist and whatever, and coming up here, the lines that it's tracking is going to make no sense. Right. So the first row, you literally, it's going to be like a, like a semicircle because you're naturally bringing it up here. Yeah. But the second one, you come in here and you're probably going to come across your body. Right. It's slightly different or you're never going to do exactly the same every time of that. Yeah. as a professional it makes zero sense right okay when people say that dart player has a great throw yeah what are they looking at because i just watch it and go yeah because i hit him where they're trying to hit but why do people care about the way the arm moves literally no movement the only thing that you want to see is you don't want to see the body moving no legs moving no upper body moving at all other than that that's all you want to see is that just the arm and the wrist is and the rest of the because you lift your foot don't you when you throw yeah I'm a shit player though yeah but like how do you how do you not do that I feel like it's just a whole movement yeah no you just get you just get so used to doing it that it's everyone the thing is that everyone is completely different but you'll see you'll see all the top players all the best players that have won stuff will be dead still and their throw will be other than Michael Van Gerwen at the minute because he's changed his throw line.
41:45He seems like he snatches a bit at the minute. No, so he used to throw just direct straight. Yeah. No messing about. But as he comes up, he kind of, his aiming point is down here before he comes in. So he pushes his arm out here to get himself ready to propel. Right. Instead of just propelling like he used to, he kind of prepares himself for it now. Is that because he had the carpal tunnels? I think so. I think he's got something to do with that. Right. Or whatever injury he's got on his hands. Yeah. But he's still obviously one of the best. You see him win Premier League night one. Yeah, and got to the final of week two as well.
42:17Got to the final of week two. Did really well at the end of last year at the players, sorry, the World Series and stuff like that. So he's still got the game. Who would you say has the best throw? One of the best ones on tour is Mickey Mantle. Is it? Yeah. Mickey Mantle's throw is slow. Yeah. It's so slow and it's hard to play against. You might have seen some social media between him and Michael Smith a couple of weeks ago last week. But his throw is just, it just takes his arm. His arm comes up here and it just goes. Right. It doesn't move. Just looks lovely. Mine pre-Dartitis was very good.
42:56Always, Glendor and Mardle would always say how good mine is. Really, yeah. Can we talk a bit about Dartitis? Yeah, sure. I think it's a thing that when you're in darts and you understand it, it's obviously something that should be taken serious. Some of the top players have had it. People who aren't into darts, and there'll be a lot of people listening now who are hearing this for the first time, they will clown on it. They will say it's a made-up thing. So what is dartitis? It's a state of mind where you can't release a dart properly. It's like a sports anxiety performance anxiety. So that's what it is.
43:37in your head you feel like you're not good enough or you're not playing well enough and then that portrays onto your body. So there was a video going about me a while ago and I struggled to release the dart and it was legit and it was not me messing about but then it's one of the things that all of a sudden it'll just disappear. I've been fine this week. I was fine last week. I have a little yip here and there but other than that it's fine. What is it feeling like when you're so you're doing your movement and you just get there and you literally get no not you just can't let go it's usually just before you want to release so that second a half second as your dart comes up here where you know you have to then propel it forward that's where you'll start to you won't be able to do that but your body's just stopping you from moving your arm forwards yeah your body your mind won't let you release that dart you get up here and that's what that's the problem I was having is it would come to here and then just before I bring my arm back to then propel the dart forward it wouldn't let me so i could feel my my shoulder and my body going yeah before my arm and then as i did you release it really late so then it drops and then it just looks awful and it feels horrible do you remember what's happening in your head as you're doing no no nothing nothing's just it's just i think it's just um to do with people struggling people going through stuff like at the end of last year i had a lot of money coming off my rankings now even in my head I will tell you that is not the reason that it happened I thought it just happened but a psychologist will tell me otherwise have you had don't want to I think I want but I think I'm just too mentally strong to want to listen to somebody that's never experienced it and never doing it just telling me okay you know the problem is this tell yourself otherwise or you are good enough.
45:37You don't think you'll get what they're trying to... Exactly. Yeah, I don't think so. It's like hypnosis. I don't believe in hypnosis. Do you not? No, I don't think it's... It probably works for some people. I think it depends on how your head goes. Yeah. If you're willing to be open about it and listen, then I think it works. I, myself, I am an arsehole. I am not... I wouldn't listen. But I'll tell you what, right? So I'm a chronic overthinker. All the time, my mind's floating off. We had a hypnotist story on this show. And Stevie's very competitive, never likes to lose, wouldn't like to be looked silly.
46:15I'm always looking silly on air. It didn't work on me, but I know it is 100 % real because it worked on Stevie. And Stevie would never in a million years let it work. You just wouldn't. I didn't like it either. the hypnotist made him forget his own name mate I was sat there this close to it I could not believe what I was saying I see tears come in Stevie's eyes and we were going what's your name and he was going I don't know I cannot believe it felt really weird it was like I knew it was there somewhere and couldn't reach for it I guess it's almost like what dartitis is happening yeah I've been listening to you guys I mean I may look into this a little bit more just to see it and I'll chat with someone about it but again I don't know it's just if I try it at least I can say I tried it right give Summit a go what about speaking to other players that have experienced it you said about not wanting to listen to them so again I've tried I've tried to speak to a couple of them but they're also in the same boat where so I know I know I think Nathan Aspinall yeah obviously he's had it for on and off for a long time yeah and he speaks to someone does he yeah as far as I'm aware I could be completely wrong so don't quote but I'm pretty sure he speaks to someone's home, Stephen Bunton.
47:31A few of them speak to psychiatrists and psychologists just to gauge and make the game better. If it works for them, it works for them. Yeah, we touched on it earlier, but you're obviously, when you get to the Palace, it's like the biggest tournament in any darts player's career, right? Getting to the pinnacle. And you have historically performed, probably punched above your weight when you got to the semis in 23, was it? 24. Class of 23, but I think the tournament was class of 24. Right, right. And you're not getting the dartitis there, and that's when you would imagine you probably would get it.
48:09So it's a strange thing. That's the performance side of it. What we touched on early on was about the floor events, because there's no atmosphere, there's nothing. And the floor events, you have to be good at the floor events to get to the other TV events and all the other... I know that. It's just being good on the floor is sometimes difficult. because you're coming across some of these players that can have a good game. Some of the new tour card holders are fucking dreadful.
48:40They're absolutely wank. And you'll see, because some of them haven't won a game for ages, and they're on the tour again. There's a couple of players, obviously I'm not going to name them, but there's some that they can't average above 72, 75. and then you get but then that one time you played them yeah they'll average 102 yeah and they'll slap your ass and thanks for coming that's the kind of look I get sometimes right yeah it's like there's so much going on there where everyone's fighting for their life apart from unless your name starts with Luke yeah that's it yeah Woodhouse is having a great time at the minute yeah I think just because half the people think he's one of the one of the either Littler or Humphreys, and he just goes, yeah, I'll ride with this.
49:28Yeah. I'll start winning and stay under the radar. Well, the first time I met you was maybe three years ago at the Target launch at the Orbital over in Stratford. Yeah. And I remember that day for obviously sitting with you and having a throw with you. And we had a little throw with Kevin Dutz as well. That was cool. He's a nice lad. But there was a young 16-year-old Luke Littler there who was quiet. He was in the corner of his dad. He didn't speak to anyone. My mate Joel, I don't know if you remember I was with Joel at the time and he's a massive darts fan he'll watch all of it at any level and he mentioned Luke Littler that day when he's fucking good five months later we're at the Worlds Luke gets to the final on his debut it's mad were you as a professional player were you aware of this prodigy like this he'd obviously won you finals and stuff like that so when I first started playing like the PDC stuff 20 maybe 21 21, 22 22 was the year I was one of the best amateur players in the world I won the challenge tour I won a pro tour without a tour card but also because I didn't have a tour card I could play everything else around it so I played in the Moda Super Series in the live lounge, I played for England so that's where I played with Luke I played with Luke for England two or three times throughout that year and even then like it was great but he was like 12 or 13 then fucking hell and I'm maybe slightly 13 or 14 but even then me and him we're trying to have the things I'm going I'm the best player in this room I literally walk in the room like I'm the best player I don't care and Luke's like hold my beer I'll hold my fruit shoe and to be fair me and him we did early on like I can remember the first time I represented England we both did we was in Wales in the British internationals and I had the highest average of the the Dallas at 100 99 I think it was and he had 99 I had 99.5 and he had 99.2 after two and a half or three games and I was like it was close but I was like yeah I'm still the best and I'm looking about now I go yeah no he's not too bad I probably won't do that with him now but so you must have played against him many times only twice have you yeah 1-1 is it 1-1 yeah I dragged him right down to my level I dragged him down to my level he was awful that day and he knows he was he just shook my hand and laughed what was this?
51:59it was on the string board there was still a live thing I beat him and I made the final that day as well I think and I beat him 6-3 or 6-4 and he had 25 left and he just it was dreadful was it? yeah anyone can have their off day can't they? I think he went for 5 and hit 20. Oh, wow. And he went for three for double one and hit big seven. Oh, fuck. Yeah, he's like, he's miles away. And then I didn't realise what was going on because I don't look. Right. I'm always staring at the floor. What, you don't watch them, the opponent take their visit? Why is that? Because I feel like if you're watching them, for them 10 or 15 seconds, sometimes you're putting more pressure on yourself.
52:41Yeah. Because if you know in their head they've got 180. Yeah. It's like, if they hit 140 and you're still stuck on 200, you're like, oh, fuck off. they've got 40 left and they've got six starts. Yeah, right. Whereas if I don't watch, it just gives me that little bit more time to not feel any pressure. Do you almost not even pay attention to the score they've got or anything? You're just purely like, I've got 501, all that matters is mine. The only time I take any notice of the score is when I'm on a finish, when I'm down to the finish. And if I feel like I can make it easier for myself, because I am known for being a bit of an arse when it comes to or a cocky prick or whatever like I said the other day I played someone the other day I had 120 I went tops, tops, tops yeah just because I did it with Dom Taylor last year twice in one game didn't you?
53:29tops, tops yeah and it was on stream as well so that got put out like everywhere everyone's tagging him he didn't read it he's up his head yeah he's up a lot of people don't like that do they like the flashy side of things yeah the flashy stuff it depends on what you call flashier though for me for me that's uh it's the perfect shot i thought that's more entertaining surely yeah yeah how would you how do you feel you're received by darts fans what energy do you get weird it's weird i i got i get a lot of love i get a lot of love i've got a lot of fans yeah which i really appreciate from all different countries even germany right um but i did get a lot of hate for my two World Wars, one World Cup comment back in 24 when I beat Martin Schindler.
54:18A lot of hate. So I've not been on X since. Have you not? Who were you getting hate from? The Germans? No, more English people. Was it? Yeah. They were saying, oh, they're racist and stuff like that. I was like, well, it's just a... It's just a football chant, isn't it? It's just a football chant. I was getting pelted. You hear it all the fucking time at football. I know it's stupid, but you do hear it. Yeah, I completely agree. That was my look on it. But yeah, our fans are usually pretty okay. Yeah. Unless they're one of these that want to bet constantly and they put in stupid amounts. I've had friends send me stupid bets for me and I'm like, I don't really want to see this.
54:57Yeah. They've got five grand on me to hit two 180s in a game. I'm like, Jesus Christ. Surely they're not sending you that before you go. I've had it. I have had it before. Have you? That's extra pressure. That was early, like, Modus stuff where... A lot of people have got done for match fixing back then. And it was even, it's never, ever bothered me. Match fixing is never something I've ever done, ever will do. I think it's just outrageous. But there are people that, people are close to your friends or just random people will just send messages. I've had it like, friends have gone, oh, Jaack, I've put tenner on you to a tenner.
55:36And if you'd have won that game, I'd have won 13 grand. I was like, well, if I won that game, I'd have won 200 ,000. So we'll call it even. Yeah, it's not like you're... So it's just silly bits like that. I guess they think they're being nice by being like, I have faith in you to do this. Yeah, exactly. I know I've got friends bet on me all the time whenever I'm in World Championships. I'm 250 to 1, 350 to 1, whatever. To win the tournament. To win the tournament. And I know people are putting£10 on. I've got friends that are putting£50 on. Fuck. You know, when Rob won it, I think he was 500 to 1.
56:09Yeah, right. And he was, you know, people are going to chuck absolute bags on him. Talking of you having fans and also getting hate as well, when I put your name into YouTube, I found the clip again of you sticking your finger... Yeah, I thought that was going to come up. Yeah, that was a weird 24 hours. Right. So that was my first ever time on TV, like mainstream TV. Right. When I played the O2, it was like Quest or some other fucking shite. Yeah. YouTube and stuff. and yeah so that was the first ever time and I'd become friends with Luke Humphries throughout the year and like he'd appreciate there's a few loads of them really appreciated what I was doing like playing the game was this against Luke Humphries?
56:54yeah I didn't even realise that oh no wait actually which part actually there's there's two so we'll do the first one so yeah back on my first ever time on TV yeah I played Luke Humphries in the Grand Slam yeah and he I was I was I could have said 2-0 up 3 I could have been 2-0, 3-0. Yeah. And I lost 5-3. And shook his hand, gave him a hug. Yeah, lovely. And joking around, I went, oh, this one. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I went, I know. And I didn't, genuinely from there, didn't think anything of it. Right. Nothing else happened for me. Two middle thinkers during the war. And then I'm in the cab with my manager going to my hotel.
57:35And his phone's going. And it's his, like, manager, his guy. he goes what the fuck has just gone on and he's like I don't know he's looking at me I don't know and he's like next thing you know Twitter X Instagram everything just me just a still it's like the sun again taking it out of proportion just a still of me behind Luke Humphrey doing that and I'm like this is the worst thing are you shitting yourself I'm shitting myself I'm like I'm new into this game what the what's going on what's going to happen and uh so so can i just stop you there but so what's that was there any beef on stage or anything no no no it was just a jokey thing like oh like you're doing a joke between friends yeah exactly and then the but you forgot the cameras i completely forgot there was about 40 cameras oh shit okay like how we're gonna deal with this right okay so it's been it's all over x i'm being tagged in it everywhere luke's been tagged in it this sounds of her so i was i put a little statement out and our manager said put it just put a little statement out nothing crazy but it was a friend so i've i've put the sorry so sorry luke i thought i thought you're going to turn around i was getting ready to give you the stone cold stunner yeah right with the old bang yeah and uh and he replied literally within 10 minutes saying don't worry about it like i'd have counted that with a rock bottom anyway so literally from that moment i was like holy fuck thank god for that yeah he's taking it in jess he understands yeah i'm playing the next night again right so i've got josh rock the next night straight away did anything come back of that like not from just you and humphries like the pdc no no no no it did yeah i got fine 250 quid oh did you right my first offense so they understood that it wasn't it wasn't malicious or anything like yeah luckily you didn't do anything the next night not that night no not the next night that was i was fine for a little bit but the next night I've turned up to the players room and you've got all the I've literally walked in all the players are me off
59:45fucking here we go you've integrated yourself well and then MVG goes Scott you're a naughty naughty boy and I was like yeah yeah I know and then I've gone out for I've gone out to the toilet and where we're playing you can see across the room everyone walking from the place and I see Luke was walking down and I was like there we go let's see how it goes next thing you know MVG's gone to the door because he knows he's coming got him and like ushered him around like a bodyguard right saying don't worry about him don't worry about him and then Luke's there and he's come over and we've had a little laugh and a hug about it and we've got over it and then the one you're talking about is Munich yeah so you're about to throw aren't you so me and Josh So me and Josh, they were warm-up darts.
1:00:34We were just getting our warm-up darts. Oh, were they? Right. Yeah. And all you could hear from behind me was, Hey, Scott, fuck you. Ah, yeah. Fuck you. And that cost me£1 ,000. Did it? Yeah. That's an expensive finger. Wow. Wow. When he said earlier on about fingering, this is what he meant. This is what I meant. This is what I meant. I won't pay£1 ,000 to finger anywhere else. That's for sure. and I've been to some lovely places. Right, so we've touched on some of the negatives there, but you're a phenomenal player and you've already done so much and your career is still fresh in this game. So let's talk about some of the highlights.
1:01:13So the obvious one, we have touched on it, but the semi-final run at the Worlds. How are you feeling day by day when you keep progressing in the Worlds Biggest Darts Tournament?

1:03:18yeah do you go back home or do you just stay in London so I used to so originally that year I stayed there because I was practicing with Rob Josh was playing a little bit later on in the event yeah and then me and Rob when we both we play kind of a day each other and then then we played pretty much on the same night right before Christmas yeah so we just stayed there we practiced a hell of a lot and just we'd just go out together for the day there'd just be a group of us me, Josh we had a friend gym and used to drive us around manager we'd just go out for days and a bit of shopping you know game pool game snooker just a few beers just to relax and then it was just the day before we'd put some right timing on the board and then the the day of it depends on whether you're afternoon or evening they just spend the day doing for call most of the time are you constantly thinking about the prize but you're not no you're not no the only time i did was when i think i beat uh heta yeah and i was talking to the wife for a while we're going to upgrade the car and I was like I just beat Schindler and I was like oh if I win another one I'll get a decent car and I ended up buying a Kia so I was like yeah so I beat Damo I was like that's 50 grand and I was like oh we'll get a decent car now and then so he played MVG and beat him and it's like 100 grand and I was like oh we can get a nicer car now if I'm still sick with a Kia for some reason I wish I got my Q8 a little bit earlier when you got to the semis that year in 24 was that when you had the battle with Rob Cross is that when you knocked him out?
1:04:53no that was a year after oh was it? what's it like when you play one of your best mates? it's tough everyone's different but I've played Josh before on TV events and we've sat here like we are here having a sandwich and chatting I think in Minehead I did a picture in Minehead last year and I play Josh the next round so we're sat there having a Chinese next to each other where Stevie is I literally just took a picture put it online I put Josh Rocks trying to Google how to beat Scott Williams he could beat me 6 '1 well Google worked doesn't it he's great but me and Rob were a bit different because we're like serious he's like real competitive between them so it's like we sound completely different tables did you yeah obviously you've been at the Palace I don't know if you've been downstairs at the Palace with other players.
1:05:46Nah. Maybe I might be able to see if I can get you in this year. And then we go, like, he'll have his friends and his family and his supporters and sponsors, and then I'll have my own table with the same. So we keep it. We're used to practicing together, practice completely separate. You're trying to look around. The first thing I do, as soon as the schedule comes out, I'm like, who the fuck can I practice with? Right. Because I'm not bothered about it. Who can I practice with? Because practicing alone is awful. Yeah. So yeah, so we just kind of separated and that was that. And then he beat me my first ever time at the Palace.
1:06:18Yeah. He beat me and then I beat him the second time. Fucking hell. It's hard. It's hard work playing with someone you're so close to. I couldn't picture what it would be like if we had to go up against each other in something so big. Yeah, like your livelihood. Yeah. But that's what it is. I took 15 grand out of his pocket. Yeah. Technically. Yeah. and it's it's a lot it is a lot of money but at the same time it's it's one of them amounts of money especially in dance that can be easily recuperated and I guess it's one of these things where you want him to win every game he plays unless it's against you pretty much yeah pretty much and we're all the same for all our close friends right we want them to do the best they can possibly do yeah unless I'm standing in that way and then I as soon as I'm playing I did it the other day I played Darryl Gurney Daryl's one of my close friends I played him in Germany last week and you've got all these people shaking hands and kissing maybe you know giving each other a grope or whatever and I literally Daryl all the best I was that didn't react didn't talk to him didn't look at him as soon as the game's over shook his hand we went back to the table and then we went out for dinner that night that's how it was on the board you've got to be completely different people I'm not going to ask you for a name here it's not that kind of show but is there one player you just can't stand you love smashing them up yeah is there yeah is that because something that's happened off stage or on stage you don't need to go into these no no there's a couple there's a couple of one my first experience with one of them was just what a horrible human being right and since then I kind of changed my views a little bit yeah he has been quite nice yeah when I got the dark artist and the videos were going around he came over and you know oh right everything okay sure yeah Yeah, there's a couple scattered around.
1:08:08They're not just like... There's potentially a Dutch and a Belgium and an English. They're kind of scattered around. But the Dutch and the Belgians are hard work. Right. Because their culture is very strict. It's very plain-faced, very abrupt. So you kind of get used to that kind of thing. But some people just go a little bit extra. It's weird as well because we see it, especially with the players that are in the Premier League, but they're around each other more than their family, aren't they? Yeah, yeah. I've only been home three days this month. Have you? Yeah. I should be home today, Jack.
1:08:48Do you enjoy the dieting lifestyle or does it really? It's okay. Yeah. It sounds good to start with. When I've been at home for two or three weeks, I'm going, oh, fuck, I get to go. Yeah, thank God I get to go away for a week. Yeah. And then I'm three days in in my hotel room with my hands down my pants. I'm going, what the fuck am I going to do now? Yeah. Right, there's nothing around there. Fingering again. Fingering. Can't finger that anymore. So it's like, so what am I meant to do? Do you watch darts? When we had MVG on, we asked him and he said, he'll never watch it. He'll only play his games.
1:09:19I will. Will you watch the Premier League tonight? I'll watch Josh's game. Really? And then you turn it off? Then I won't watch it, yeah. If the Premier League was more exciting, like it was five years ago, when there was 10 players and it was kind of, the different players Yeah from that I enjoyed that Yeah but when the same players are playing each other every week all the time Do you think it'll be the last year we see this format then? I don't think so What you think they're going to keep doing the same format? At least another year Really? Yeah until they've Wow Well maybe because they had so many good players this year that they couldn't include Yeah So maybe you know when you lost Aspinall it's like no one wants to lose Aspinall in the Premier League No We love Aspinall Yeah I love Aspinall he's so good he's so fun I met him for the first time this weekend and he's brilliant at that yeah he asked me how my cock was the other day as well half of them did walked in there walked in there Johnny Clayton I was like it's got easy penis alright I was like it's a little small but it still works before we finish on the couple of games I want to just ask you what it's like to hit a nine darter I was about to say I don't know but I have hit one on the pro tour yeah Yeah, it's cool.
1:10:32Didn't bother me. I still won the game. Yeah, it didn't bother me. Have you... So you've only hit one... No, I've hit... I've hit one in tournament. I've only hit one in tournament, yeah. And that was last year against James Horrell. I beat him six now. It was the second leg. First or second leg, I think it was. Did you celebrate? Nope. Is there any prize? James was my captain when I played for England. Right. So I'm good friends with him. So we was going to have a good game anyway. And then I hit the nine data. didn't celebrate took the darts out of the board walked around little fist bump from him and then it was five it got to five nil and and he was awful and if you've ever seen that it's like no one talks to each other when they're throwing so he's he's got he's got I think it was one four five left and I'm sat on 25 and he goes he's walked past me going I'm taking this out I was like yeah nice he hit big five first start so I was like now I've got 25 left I've now got 94444 to win the game.
1:11:33Wow. You like being an entertainer, don't you? Yeah, that's what it's about. That's what it's always about. That's what it is. It's an entertaining sport. That's what people want to see. You guys are paying the money or the fans are paying the money to come see some entertainment. I'm there to try and give it to the best of my ability, but also try and win at the same time. Trying to earn money for me, but also have a great time doing it. And I think that's summed up perfectly by you're kind of synonymous with the no-look 180 as well. Have you ever gone for something entertaining that's backfired massively and you regret?
1:12:06Yeah. The middle fingers. No, but I mean like where you're going for like the 9-4-4-4. Have you ever done something like that and then you've ended up losing a leg? No, when I tried against Jermaine, what I mean in the World Championships, I had 80 left. I was on for the 9-data. I went 180-180. Went for my usual route for the 9-data. Missed it. Hit 61 to leave 80. Went for the top-to-tops, which I would anyway. I'll hit the first one. threw the second one, thought he was in, did the old walk, but I was like, oh no, come back, missed the double ten and he's gone out. He's won the game. That was the match winning game as well.
1:12:40Fucking hell. But not often. I do try to keep, I do try to behave myself if it is tournament play and stuff like that. But if I am in the thing, I've done it last year against Wessel Nyman. I had the double, I had 32 left. No, I didn't, I had 48 left. went double 16 double 8 double 8 or 64 so I went double 16 double 8 double 8 just because they're all next to each other and they all went in do other players get annoyed because was it Pikachu and Littler didn't he hate the way Littler was playing Ricardo
1:13:16wouldn't name names earlier but now we know well you see Ricardo's a nice he's a nice boy he's a nice boy and he has similar similar interests with you he loves trading cards and stickers and loves Pokemon and loves all that stuff. That's awesome. I love stickers and training cards and Pokemon. Yeah. I don't moan about shit when someone's trying to take the piss out of you. Yeah. There's a reason he's taking the piss out of you. Right. Simple as that. Because he can. Yeah. So if little of thought that was his chance to do it, I've done it. If I can feel weakness in someone, I did it the other day.
1:13:48I told you about the stabbing in my face. Yeah. Yesterday. Yeah. I took out 161. And because I knew I could feel his energy was a little bit like he was a bit dampened. Right. So I took out the 161 while he sat on tops and I yanked the darts out and stabbed myself in the face. So karma got me straight away. I think you can see the mark. Yeah, I still got the mark. I literally underneath there just bled. Wow. In about 15 minutes just bled. I kept doing that and I just more blood and I've lost. That's mental mind games though, isn't it? You need to do that kind of stuff to get an edge. It's getting in the head.
1:14:18An edge, isn't it? What's your opinion on playing slow players? We saw it in the last World Champs Joe Cullen lost his head against Mensah. do you feel that that's Mensah getting an edge or do you feel like he's taking the piss a bit there we know Mensah's a slow player anyway but this is a tough one for me because I want to say a lot but Mensah is really fucking hard to play right really tough to play not because of the fact he's slow he can be slow but he does little things little antics does he yeah cameras don't know the cameras the cameras pick up the thing is though as a dart player like you'll see it straight away you know straight away if he's being an arse or not yeah whereas like the camera just pick up him walking around going to his table dabbing his fingers he does and that's it that's what he does that's his routine that's cool it's everything else he does that that's ridiculous how slow he was being when he celebrates if you win a leg yeah you don't need to celebrate the way he said it.
1:15:25No, run off. Running off. Yeah. Get out of here. I think that's silly. I think that's unsports. So you think Joe had a... Absolutely did, yeah. I watched the game and I was like, this is ridiculous. See, I'll be honest, because I'm just your average darts fan, I watched it and I thought Joe was being salty. It's good to hear this. Yeah, from a player's point of view, he's got absolutely every right. I've played Mensah a couple of times and he's weird. When Mensah, it's again, the mind game in a way. When Mensah felt like he's in charge of the game, he can do that little bit extra just to be a bit of a prick and put Joe off.
1:16:02And then you know straight away, as soon as your head's gone, as soon as Joe's head's gone, Joe's quite headstrong, as soon as his head's gone, it's really hard to bring it back down. I'm very similar. I did it with Mensah. I played Mensah last year towards the end of the year. And he won the first leg and he celebrated like it was the final of the World Championship. And I've gone, oh, cool. And I started laughing in the middle of the string board. I'm laughing at the way he's reacted to hitting the double. This is ridiculous. He's not the only one. There's a few that like to play little games or try little bits and bobs.
1:16:36Will, if you have a problem with someone and you walk off stage, will that continue backstage? Can it? Can do. The other week I played someone in the Masters qualifier and he accused me of tapping my foot, so I offered him outside. Yeah. I won the game. Yeah. Put it in his face. Yeah. but I'm stood there, never done anything. I would never do anything. I literally have the same routine. I get my darts, I walk, I stand and that's it. Don't move my hand. As soon as, I'm so used to playing in pubs where someone's trying to cling their darts and stuff like that. My darts stay in my hand, they don't move.
1:17:09Yeah. And he's there and he misses that double turn around. Look at me, I was like, what are you fucking looking at? Yeah. Have you said that on stage? Have I said that on stage? I don't think so. Right. How? I think I've been good at that one. Good, yeah. Yeah, yeah. How distracting can these things be? When the crowd's being as loud as they are, how distracting can moving your darts around? The crowd being so loud, it's just one big noise. White noise, yeah. Whereas if it's dead quiet, other than a bit of chatter here and there, you can get used to a little bit of low chatter. But if you hear a tap or a clink or a noise, and then all of a sudden that starts being a bit more regular, you're going to go, this fucker's trying to have me on here.
1:17:49Especially if it's timed at the point that you're throwing. It's times, yeah, but it doesn't happen very often. And those whistles in the crowd, which we're seeing more and more from idiots, they're really off-putting. They can be. They can be. I had a few when I got to Germany, really, just because of the World War comments. I get heckled and I get on with it. I can get on with it just sometimes for some of the other players. They just can't push through it because it's always happening, always at the wrong time. Yeah. Right. Scott, we just want to quickly finish. we've obviously got our our big announcement to come up at the end which I'm excited for but I just want to finish on two quick fire games let's try this let's do this so the first one is Stevie and I are going to rattle off some categories and we want you to answer with a player so for example who's got the worst haircut you'll rattle it off you can choose to delve into it and give us a bit more but you don't have to okay Stevie kick us off who is the best on a night out and why it'd be the same answer for everyone I'd be chizzy i've got a quick story about him and it might not be that interesting to you because you've been around him but i met him at this hemsby weekender i was doing and he was steaming right so he's he's doesn't sound barely stand yeah and it's one in the morning i'm about to go home and i go up to him and i go chizzy give us a game uh i put 100 quid on it and i'm a shit player and i go i start on 301 you start on 501 and you have to do double double in and he double in double out and he refused to take the money but he offered me the game because he's a nice guy yeah first start he's gone double and then he's gone 140 180 and just checked out in about 11 darts again and this is a guy who cannot stand up and i was like i have got a newfound appreciation for darts players dave is a different breed of person he really he's old breed of person he's old dart player i've i've been a i've been around dave um long enough now i've been in the game and I've played in like 250 tournaments.
1:19:46So Dave's won maybe 10 of them in that time. All of them, he's come in at five o 'clock in the morning, slept for two hours, turned up red-eyed. He's been on Jack Daniels all night, not knowing what his name is. And then he's turned up and banged in 405 averages and then won the tournament. Sometimes we've seen Dave walk in, Dave, yeah, yeah, got in about five o 'clock. I was like, fucking hell. he's winning today I've had one weekend with him and I can confirm that's all true who's the moodiest player backstage? not necessarily horrible but who's grumpy Barney's quite is he? yeah Barney's he's nice he's a nice bloke but he is because he I think in his head he still thinks he's as good as he was 15-20 years ago right so he gets a bit up on himself probably hard he's probably hard on himself sometimes yeah and he's been struggling a lot recently as well so yeah he can be quite grumpy but there's a few out there that are all pretty much the same boat Who's got the biggest ego?
1:20:51Or the most confidence? You can say yourself Well yeah I mean I am but it's like I've got nothing to pack it up I've got the confidence in the same fucking game I don't think there's not many there's not many out there that are like that obviously Nath Aspinall he comes across quite Joville and great but he's great fun yeah he's not you never think he's the best player in the world no there's a fear obviously Le Comfort is completely opposite he doesn't even think he's that good sometimes yeah so yeah there's not really anyone specifically I'll say myself with that one okay who's the funniest it could be again Aspinall Joe Cullen Johnny Clayton is Clayton funny is he Clayton's hilarious yeah is he but he's he's the kind of guy that listens to everyone and then has the last word.
1:21:46There's always a joke at the end of it. NVG's hilarious. I did an exhibition with him and we're sat at the toilet and he's taking a picture of us pissing. He's just minding my own business and he's like, hey, so I'll take a picture. I was like, yeah, sure. So I'm having a piss. Who is the smartest?
1:22:11I'm pretty clever. Different kind, maybe different kind of clever. I feel like Andrew Gilden should be the cleverest person in the world. Really? Yeah, I feel like he's, he's like gold member. And he, but he's just like, there's just something about him. Obviously, don't leave your kids with him. But at the same time, you're right. That's the, that's where the, that's where the, sorry, anyway. what was the question that wasn't the question clip that it was who's the smartest oh yeah the smartest anyone that doesn't leave the kids with anything that's it no he seems a lovely guy sorry Andrew I do I love Andrew Andrew's great Mrs is awesome oh yeah see I'm surprised that he's smart and I'm allowed to say this because I'm from his neck of the woods and our accent makes us sound thick.
1:23:12It's like, well, you know, I thought he'd done all right up there today. Who do you reckon would be the toughest in a street fight? Gez. Yeah. Gez. Aspinall. Yeah? Yeah, I reckon Aspinall's got a bit about him. Go as well. Bobby Cross. Yeah. I reckon he'll rip a few throats out. Fair enough. If you had to have a charity boxing match against any other dart player, who and why? Pikachu. Would it really? Yeah, just for the fun of it. He's quite small, isn't he? Yeah, exactly. He might use Thunderbolt. Yeah, he could use Thunderbolt. Yeah, quick attack. Who's the quietest? Who do you think you know the least, despite being around them the most?
1:23:52Oh. Okay. Some of these new talk-out orders, you never know them because they're not on tour long enough. But there's so many like Mike Dedecker. Is he quiet? Yeah, I really like Mike, and he's just quiet. me and him have an inside joke I always tell him that his eyes aren't opening off he's got like really squinty eyes he has yeah when he posts stuff I've done it before I was like look how good you'd be imagine how good you'd be if you opened your eyes I like that he's a major winner so who is the most surprising in what aspect in like how the public view them so maybe the public aren't too keen on them but they're great Okay, Gez is one of them.
1:24:39Yeah. Because obviously he's portrayed as he is on the, his persona on the stage, where he obviously gives the hard man and stuff like that. He's actually really nice. He's a proper businessman, really professional, really nice person to speak to. Yeah. He's got time for everyone as well. That's a good answer. And then finally on this game, who is the hardest working, who practices the most, who's never off the board? Damo. Yeah. All I see on my TikTok is Damo and boobies. Right. So it's like, if he's not Boobies, it's Damon. That's the algorithm. That's not my fault. I thought Boobies was like the nickname for his girlfriend or something then.
1:25:16No, that's Megan. That's Megan. That's his wife. I've never called her that. Because I thought you said Damon and Boobies. No, Boobies didn't. Okay. Okay. And then the final quickfire, quickfire game. This is one word association. We are going to rat you off a player's name. We want you to say one word that comes to your head when you hear that player, Stevie. Aspinall Tough Bunting People's Jump Littler Legend Gary Anderson Guinness Pikachu Love of my life Shaggy Legend Led proper legend Oh you know about me or Joe Mernon Snakebite
1:26:13Charismatic Oh good, MVG Hilarious Gezi A hard worker Wayne Mardle A proper laugh Yeah, yeah That's really good, Scott You've been good fun today, mate Thank you so much Thank you so much for coming on Thanks for having me It's been a pleasure Now it's time for our announcement Yeah Do you want to get your bag out, Scott? What kind of bag? You've got a big bag. I've got a monster truck bag. That's actually quite cool. What an announcement? Monster Jam. Monster Jam. That's actually quite cool. A Dalmatian monster truck. Crazy. Scott, we were speaking a few weeks ago. We were. After a drunken back and forth.
1:26:56We'd actually been to Riley's. We were playing darts. And then we went to a drag karaoke. Yeah, we had a weird night. It was great. Yeah, it was good fun. It was good fun. And there was me, you, our friends, Lewis and Joel. And I've been wanting for a long, long time to align myself with a darts player as closely as possible. And we have decided and we have agreed, and it is official, and this is the announcement, that Happy Hour is now the brand new Scott Williams sponsor. Money's been transferred. It's official. For 2026. I am so giddy for this, honestly. Look at these shots. There we go. Black and yellow, baby.
1:27:37Oh, look at these shirts. Right, we can hold it like a proper transfer there. So it's legit. It's going to cover that spot for the TV. So for the audio listeners, we are holding up Scott Williams' yellow shirt that you would have seen him play in a few times. Audio listeners. And the Happy Hour logo is on there. It looks really cool as well. It's come out really good, actually. I'm glad you redid it. Yeah, yeah. I love Target. I don't know who these guys are. I'm sure they're great. We have the best logo. It's a lovely logo. So it's Target have the best. They pay the most money.
1:28:10But no, I'm pleased we managed to sort something out and looking forward to how the rest of this year goes, both darting-wise and the support I'm going to get from you guys. Well, one, we're big fans of yours. I met you a few years ago. You wear yellow. It was like your humour is very similar to ours. I just thought it was a perfect mitt. It does look really good. I like that you've made the O in the happy hour a dartboard as well, a target. Yeah, yeah, it looks good, doesn't it? It looks really good. It looks great. So does this mean we can just come and watch you throughout the year then? Yeah, absolutely it does.
1:28:42Does it? That's as easy as that. You could have done it anyway, but I paid the money, so I'm a bit obliged. You didn't want us, though. Going to await some messages, so come and watch you. I'm like, oh, fuck. I think happy hour listeners if you're new to darts if you or even if you if you've never seen darts before and you want to get into it you have your new favourite player here Scott Williams this is a match made in heaven isn't it will we see you at the palace wearing that then? I hope so I hope so obviously I won't qualify but that should be something I'll do by the time you get to July so but yeah that'll be on the shirt at the palace and can people buy these?
1:29:20they can buy this they can buy this from Target yeah direct targetdarts.co.uk love it we're going to hang one up in here yeah so the ones with the happy hour officially yeah will be from September onwards I'm buzzing I'm buzzing I can't wait to see that that's so exciting yeah I'm excited to see clips you need to start just saying mental shit in interviews as well because then we'll we'll get that out there more I really much already do that so yeah if you're going to if you're going to video YouTube me or anything like that like find some of this fucking proper not out of my penis Well, one thing I really like as well is Sonny and I, we do the collectible cards, and obviously you're in the PDC ones, and they have full front photos, so maybe Happy Hour will actually be in a different PD card.
1:30:05Yeah, hopefully. Unfortunately, Panini, as much as I appreciate them, have not chosen the right photos for the last two years. Have they not? I've been wearing that shirt for nearly two years, and both lots of Panini cards, pardon me, have been my old shirt. I'm going to have to email them and say, use a new picture of Scott. I will do. I'll do that as well. Yeah. We double team them. So, yeah, I'm sure we're going to be seeing a lot more of you, Scott. Sure, I hope so. Thanks for coming in and giving us great air. We always finish with two questions. What's coming up this year for you, on and off the hockey?
1:30:33All of it. Just darts. Darts, darts, darts. I have a shop. I opened a shop as well as a darts studio ready for youth players and stuff to come through. So I'm trying to help academy players and youth players take the next step into darts as well as players that have never played before that want to start playing darts. I have a space for them to feel comfortable and try that out as well. Oh, that's sick. But if one of those kids come and play and beat you, you will be giving them the middle fingers and behind their back. Oh, punch the little jaws out. I don't care if he's nine or 19. I won't do it in my fucking house.
1:31:09There we go, guys. This has been Jackmates Happy Hour podcast for me, Jackmates, Stevie White, and the brand new Happy Hour sponsored Scott Williams. Scott, what's the meaning of life? the reason we're here, boy. The reason we're here. This is the meaning of life. Talking to two mediocre guys about the crappy sport. People enjoying it. Drinking a can of water. Drinking a can of water. Love it. Where's this come from? There we go. See you soon. Cheers, mate. Nice one. What are we doing? What are we doing? I love it. Scott Williams grew up as an emo kid in a rough area and dreamt of being a footballer, but the oche had other ideas. Naturally gifted from the start, he explains how he fell into the sport of darts, what happened on his first time on TV, and why he didn’t celebrate his only televised nine-darter.
Scott opens up about the infamous middle finger fines, the “World War” chant controversy, why he refuses to sit at the same table as Rob Cross, and being approached about match-fixing. He shares his first impressions of a 12-year-old Luke Littler long before the mania kicked in, the Luke Humphries bust-up, and why sometimes he’ll throw a no-look 180 purely for entertainment.
There’s plenty of darts nerd chat too - “dartitis” and the psychological battle of not being able to let go of the dart, what actually makes a “good throw”, and why Scott thinks trackers are completely pointless. There’s dressing-room antics involving Michael van Gerwen, hungover Dave Chisnall, and some strong opinions on Andrew Gilding. We wrap it up with a HUGE Happy Hour announcement you won’t want to miss!
