In short
Kalani Ghost Hunter (KGH) discusses his niche shift from ghost hunting to traveling the UK and immersing in British culture, while comparing US vs UK life (food, pubs, schools, drinking, and urban legends).
Guest backgrounds
Kalani is an American content creator from Nashville (grew up in Mount Juliet, Tennessee; born in Las Vegas). He previously ghost hunted, is now known for TikTok/Instagram reels trying English food and visiting places like Norwich. He’s also an Eagle Scout (before 14) and has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with a homeland security focus. He played competitive American football (offensive lineman; “Mr. Football” finalist in Tennessee’s top public-school division).
Key claims
He remains skeptical about ghosts but says his experiences are hard to explain. He says Americans are often “cringy” to Brits, but he’s “the coolest American.” He argues British drinking isn’t automatically “worse” than American drinking—just different.
Notable examples
Norwich cathedral as his main reason for visiting; specific UK foods and brands mentioned include Wetherspoons, Greggs, crisps (salt and vinegar), and Lucozade Zero (pink lemonade). Urban legends discussed include Bigfoot and the “White Lady of Stow Lake” (San Francisco). He also shares a school prank: printing a teacher’s drunk cruise photo and plastering it around the classroom.

And we have a man joining us today in the form of Kalani Ghost Hunter. Now, right off the bat, I'm going to say this is probably the number one guest of all time that if you don't know who they are, give it a go. I think Kalani will be the first to admit his content's quite niche because he was a ghost hunter back in the day. And now his TikTok and his Instagram reels. They are him trying English food, isn't it? Because he's from Nashville. He's fully immersed in British culture.
0:37Kalani Ghost Hunter:I've never met an American who gets it. He knows more than us. Well, let's be honest. I slag Americans off a lot on here. I say they're cringy. A lot of them, the way they speak, their humour. Kalani gets it. He gets it. And I'm not just saying, look, be less American, be more British, but he's a cool American. He's one of He's the coolest Americans on this goddamn planet, I think I'm going to say. He wears a cowboy hat. He wouldn't let me wear it. He's a man who knows what he wants. We talk about his old ghost hunting days, about some of the creepiest things he's ever experienced. Spoiler alert, he's still a sceptic now.
1:15Kalani Ghost Hunter:But because of that, him telling us about the strangest things he's seen with his own eyes makes it scarier because it makes it more. He's not sitting there going, it was definitely a ghost, but he's going, what the fuck is this about? It's believable. Yeah, and again, I don't want to talk too much about the episode, but the way he says that some of his streams when he was ghost hunting, nothing would happen, makes you know that when it does happen, he's not faking it. So we talk about ghosts. We talk about everything British. There's a big bit of Weatherspoons in there. We talk about Greggs. We talk about all the crisps we've got, all the chocolate we've got, the differences between US culture and UK culture.
1:49Kalani Ghost Hunter:As you can see by the duration, it's going to be a banger because Stevie and I wouldn't sit there and waffle with someone who's a twat for almost two hours. Unless we have to. Unless we have to. But that's not Kalani. What a boy. What a guy. Man. He's a man. He is a man.
2:18Kalani Ghost Hunter:Jack Maite's happy hour. Queen Carvania stood haloed by the morning sun. An army hung on her every word. My champions, I have sold my chariot on Carvana. It was a lovely SUV, an inexplicably queenly offer. They're even coming to the castle to collect it. Tonight, we feast.
2:45Jaack Maate:An offer you can feast on. Sell your car today on Carvana. Pick up these mail. Bye. Your vehicle doesn't just get you from here to there. It's a bridge to the people and places that matter most. It's how you show up for your family, your community, and everyone else that depends on you. That's why for 125 years, Firestone has been building tires with one thing in mind. To deliver products that are as reliable as you are. Firestone. Always dependable. Since 1900.
3:21Kalani Ghost Hunter:Hello guys, welcome back to Jack Makes Happy Hour podcast. It's Stevie and I back again for another guest interview. Now Stevie, the guy we have to our right, is a unique, interesting character that came into our lives at the same time, I think, in terms of the content. I believe so, yeah. Do you want to explain to the listeners how we found out about this guy before we say who it is? This guest's videos just kept popping up for me, specifically because he was creating content in Norwich. In our fine city of Norwich. On the show today, we have Nashville-born content creator who used to search for ghosts and now travels the UK experiencing British culture.
3:59Kalani Ghost Hunter:You may know him as Kalani Ghost Hunter. Now it goes by KGH. Kalani, welcome to the show. Thank you for having me. I appreciate it. Mate, can I say, you are one cool-looking fucker, aren't you? I appreciate that. I appreciate that. This might be the most offensive thing you've ever been asked.
4:13Jaack Maate:Can I wear the hat? There's only been one person that has ever worn my hat that wasn't my wife. I know. And that was Gordon Ramsay. And I was even a little apprehensive for that, to be honest with you. But I was like, ah, man, it's Gordon Ramsay. Come on. You can't say yes to Gordon Ramsay. So I was like, but that hat actually is at home. This is a new one. Right, okay. I don't like wearing a hat that somebody else has worn. Oh, so that one's tainted. That one's retired. Oh. So I'm really weird about my hat. Right. Because my entire content journey started after this particular Stetson that I bought.
4:47Jaack Maate:And that one sits in a special box. Now the Gordon Ramsay one is in a special box. So this is 3.0.
4:52Kalani Ghost Hunter:Well, I won't put it on because I don't want you to retire that.
4:55Jaack Maate:No, I don't want to buy another one. They're expensive. Are they expensive? Can I ask how much? This one is about 250, 300 quid. Wow. But there's some that are like, you can get some with like diamond buckles that are like 10 ,000. Fucking hell. But the quality, like you could feel it if you want. Yeah, I won't be there. But it's just, it's felt.
5:14Kalani Ghost Hunter:Are they from like specialist places?
5:16Jaack Maate:You can look on the inside. So that's a Stetson. So when people talk about the Stetson Hat Company, that's what they're talking about. And where'd you buy this? That's straight from Stetson. Right. But my first one was from Fort Worth. Right. Which I grew up in Nashville. So I was actually born in Vegas, believe it or not. I grew up in Nashville. I was in Nashville from six months up until now, which is 28 years later. Right. so Nashville's very much like country music heavy a lot of people associate cowboy hats with Nashville or Tennessee and Texas is usually like what people think about cowboy hats yeah they go well you can
5:50Kalani Ghost Hunter:you can certainly pull it off I'm not sure we'd be able to pull that off do you think no not at all
5:54Jaack Maate:I'll tell you with the right fit yeah anyone can pull off a good hat I can't even wear those
5:58Kalani Ghost Hunter:baseball cat you've seen me wear yeah you don't look right in a hat no I don't I'm gonna try one on at some point and we'll see how we how we go now Kalani we always start with the same question We ask every guest this. We have been doing it for, been doing the show for eight years. However, we swapped the question for the last four years, but we're going to revert back to our old question because it suits you more. So we normally ask if you could put any item into our Hall of Fame, what would it be? I imagine you'd say your hat. We're reverting back to our OG question. What's your go-to meal deal?
6:26Jaack Maate:Ooh, go-to meal deal. Right now it's tuna and sweet corn. My favorite crisps are the co-op salt and vinegar. Okay. because it's like the strongest salt and vinegar. And then usually like a Lucozade Zero.
6:41Kalani Ghost Hunter:Okay. Now we need to rate this. Which flavor Lucozade Zero?
6:45Jaack Maate:The pink lemonade one.
6:46Kalani Ghost Hunter:Nice. I like it. I do like it. I don't like tuna.
6:50Jaack Maate:I don't like sweet corn.
6:51Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah.
6:51Jaack Maate:We used to be. I will say, I used to not be the biggest tuna and sweet corn guy. Okay. But I've recently started putting the crisp in the tuna and sweet corn because it gives it that nice crunch and it kind of masks some of the tuna flavor because sometimes you get a shitty tuna and sweet corn sandwich. But when you add the crisp in there, it's just everything with crisp is better.
7:10Kalani Ghost Hunter:And I imagine that works because what do you put on fish?
7:13Jaack Maate:Salt and vinegar.
7:14Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah, I love a crisp sandwich as well. Do you like tuna? I can do tuna. Sweet corn's the thing that bothers me. You don't notice it as much with the crisp. Okay, this is where we rate it. A lot of our viewers had problems with us rating it because who the fuck put us in charge? And also, it just goes on our personal taste, doesn't it? Yeah, and we have the taste of children. Yeah, we do. so I'm going to go for normally I'd go lower because it's tuna but I get what Kalani's saying with the salt and vinegar so I'm going to go 6.8 I was going to say 7 ok 6.9 that's not bad now we've got 3 quick fire questions to get to know the man behind the content Stevie kick us off we actually got a question from one of our reddit what are they called?
7:57Kalani Ghost Hunter:redditors? shout out the reddit by the way we have a love hate relationship with our reddit but they were super excited to know that you were coming on. You were requesting.
8:06Jaack Maate:I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing.
8:08Kalani Ghost Hunter:Well, they hate us, but they're liking you, so you're all good. Okay, well, thank you. So it was Nord9632 asked, if you could have dinner with any ghost historical figure, who are you having that meal with, and where would you take them for dinner?
8:25Jaack Maate:Like ghost hunter or somebody that would be a ghost hunter? Yeah, any historical figure. Any historical figure. died and or just any dead person really okay any dead person my childhood crush was marilyn monroe oh okay but a close second would probably be johnny cash because i love johnny cash yeah i love everything johnny cash was about but i feel like if i have one opportunity to take somebody
8:45Kalani Ghost Hunter:out yeah marilyn monroe would i eat would you let her wear your hat well so there is a little caveat
8:52Jaack Maate:to that and my wife knows that marilyn monroe is my cry right pending i wasn't married at the time Marilyn Monroe would probably be wearing my hat If I was married at the time I might send a message to Savannah And be like hey Can Marilyn Monroe wear my hat What do you think your wife would say I don't know about that one But it'd be worth a shot I mean it's Marilyn Monroe
9:17Kalani Ghost Hunter:That's a great answer And where are you going to take her for dinner I feel like she just seems like a nice
9:24Jaack Maate:Classy steak dinner lady I don't really know But I feel like just a nice steak dinner there, some mash, baked potato. I'm nothing crazy. I'm more about the exchange of sitting there with Marilyn Monroe rather than focusing on the food. So I just feel like a place at home where it's like I can get a quality steak. I don't have to worry about that. The food's taken care of. I can just focus on Marilyn Monroe.
9:46Kalani Ghost Hunter:What a fucking answer. Brilliant. Next one. What's something the internet probably doesn't know about you that you're willing to share?
9:52Jaack Maate:Okay. What does the internet. No, I was an Eagle Scout before the age of 14. Okay. And I have a bachelor's degree in criminal justice with a concentration in Homeland Security.
10:04Kalani Ghost Hunter:Wow. We're thick. Yeah. Explain that last bit to us as two fucking idiots.
10:10Jaack Maate:So the last part is it's like I wanted to go into, well, I initially wanted to go to school to be a nuclear engineer and it wasn't a job that I really wanted to do. It's a really boring job when you kind of get to the nitty gritty of it. So I wanted to do something, and my grandfather was a detective for a long time in Nashville. So I wanted to do something in the criminal justice field, but I wanted it to be more homeland security based. So a lot of my subject matter was studying terrorist groups and a bunch of other crazy stuff.
10:38Kalani Ghost Hunter:Fucking hell, that's cool as fuck. Can I say, being a detective sounds like, in Nashville as well, sounds like the coolest thing.

10:46Jaack Maate:He had some crazy stories of stuff that they had to deal with. Is he free to come on a podcast? Well, we might have to pull out a spirit box because he's dead.
10:54Kalani Ghost Hunter:Oh, sorry. Well, we got more than a moment. Yeah. Oh, wow. Fucking hell. You might actually, not to blow too much smoke up your ass this early on, but you might be one of the coolest guests we've ever had on. Already, yeah. Americans are always cool. I slag off Americans a lot on this show, but the Americans that we've had on, we had Jason Coon, poker player. We had the two wrestlers, Dominic Mysterio and Liv Morgan. We had Johnny Knoxville. We've not had a bad American on yet. I feel like you've got a pretty good record there. Yeah, we have. And now we've got you. What an honour. Right, Stevie, last one.
11:26Kalani Ghost Hunter:Pick from our list. Okay, so this one is something I love. So we know you did some ghost hunting in the past. Yep. I'm a big fan, and we've got a whole series, like sub-series on this podcast where we don't have guests on, where we speak about urban legends. Okay. How do you feel about urban legends? Do you have a favourite urban legend? You have to cry about that.
11:44Jaack Maate:Or do you not believe them at all? I feel like the whimsy of all of it is having a little belief. Like life would be boring if I was just like everything is not real. And I've had crazy things happen in my life that doing ghost hunting and other stuff that I truly can't explain. So like one of my favorites is Bigfoot. Oh, yeah. But Bigfoot, it's always like you get the footage of it and it looks like it was shot on a Motorola Razr from like 2004. So I get the distrust in it, but a part of me really wants to believe in Bigfoot. because I've been in the Appalachian Mountains before, which I know that's the U.S.
12:15Jaack Maate:Is that his actual origin then? No, a lot of people put him out in the Pacific Northwest, like the Oregon way. But Appalachian Mountains, a lot of people talk about skinwalkers and other crazy stuff. I can't say that I've seen anything, but there is whistling that does come out of the Appalachian Mountains, and one of the rules up there is you don't whistle back. There's a lot of, if you ever get the time, go to the Appalachian Mountain lore and just look at all of the little things. How are we spelling that? A-P-P-A-L-A-C-H-I-A-N.
12:53Kalani Ghost Hunter:Let's have a Google. We actually flew over to San Francisco to try and find an urban legend because there's the White Lady of Stow Lake in Golden Gate Park. It's bizarre though because it was such a big urban legend when we were researching it, but even when we were in San Francisco, no one seemed to have heard of it. So has that ever come across your way?
13:13Jaack Maate:I think San Francisco has enough going on and they're probably not worried about the urban life.
13:17Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah, that's a good point. A couple of people in the park did tell us they heard weird noises and stuff, but I think it might just be...
13:23Jaack Maate:Was she supposed to be wearing a white dress? Yeah. Why are they always wearing a white dress? Always.
13:27Kalani Ghost Hunter:Gary has a theory of that. Maybe it's Marilyn Monroe.
13:29Jaack Maate:Or maybe they were like, maybe it's like the day they were married or something, they're like constantly in that state of...
13:34Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah, there was a bit of that. She was a bride, wasn't she? She had a baby and it went in the lake. Yeah, the pram fell in the lake and then she tried to find her baby. So she runs around saying, have you seen my baby? Did you guys find her? No. What did you find? Her did hear some weird noises. It was freaky. We had to go onto this bridge in the middle of the park at nighttime and we had to recite this sort of poem, this kind of... But we're both little bitches when it comes to that stuff. We don't think anything will happen, but we've just both got that bit in our head. But it's the doubt you have.
14:03Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah. 0.0001 % chance. Still don't want to do it. Yeah, that's our theory. You know... Bloody Mary. Bloody Mary. Yeah, yeah. You have to say it like three times. In the mirror, yeah. Yeah, see, I won't, right? And it's not because I'm scared, right? I know you would do it, right? No, it is because you're scared. It's because... I don't believe in it, but like Stevie said, if there's a 0.001%, why fuck about with it? That's my... I've done it a lot of times, and I'm sitting here at the podcast. Yeah, yeah, cool. Cool, right, Kalani, let's go into a bit of you and your early life. Okay. So you were born in Nashville, Tennessee.
14:37Kalani Ghost Hunter:Las Vegas. Sorry, yeah, you were born in Las Vegas. You grew up in Nashville. Yep. We always ask our guests about their hometown and to tell us a bit about it. And it's so interesting to have you on today because normally we just have someone from like Romford or Scunthorpe. Nashville is a million miles away from us, not literally. What's it like growing up there in Nashville?
14:55Jaack Maate:Well, so I live in a little place called Mount Juliet, which is about 15, 20 minutes east of Nashville, but no one knows where that's at. So when someone asks me where I'm from, I say, yeah, Nashville. Yeah. When I grew up, it was Farmfields, a Waffle House, and about two stores and a couple stoplights. Now it's like a big development of a bunch of different stores, chain restaurants. I mean, it's grown up quite a bit because Nashville has blown up, so now it's like because we're so close, we have started to blow up.
15:23Kalani Ghost Hunter:Right, okay. Like the overspill of the main.
15:25Jaack Maate:Yeah, it's a lot different than when I was a kid. There's parts of it I love, parts of it I don't love, like the traffic, but then you come over to London, you're like, you know what, that traffic's not that bad. What happened to us on the way here, literally half an hour ago?
15:38Kalani Ghost Hunter:Oh, we got crashed into on the way there. Someone drove into the back of a car. Yeah, crazy. Welcome to London.
15:43Jaack Maate:I watched a guy today in his van hit a guy on a bike, get out, pick the guy up, give him a pat on the back, made sure he was okay, and he just kept driving. I was like, London.
15:57Kalani Ghost Hunter:Why has Nashville got so popular in recent years?
15:59Jaack Maate:Well, there's a lot of reasons. You look at the financial part of it. So like Tennessee doesn't have state income tax. So you still have federal tax, but it's a really good state if you're wanting to start a business or you're looking for tax advantages. So that's probably the biggest draw. But there's a lot of natural beauty to Tennessee, and there's also a lot of industry. So if you're in country music or even music at all now, it's a great place to try and get your start. So there's a lot of people moving there for that, a lot of businesses moving in for that, which brings jobs, which brings people.
16:26Kalani Ghost Hunter:Okay. Do you play any kind of music? or?
16:29Jaack Maate:I sing every now and then, mostly drunk karaoke. Yeah. Which is a half bad. Right now it's been How to Save a Life by The Fray. Oh, what a tune. Good song. Yeah. What a tune. When I get drunk, there's a video of me online from Newcastle like a week or two ago singing that drunk.
16:46Kalani Ghost Hunter:I've seen a lot of your content, especially your recent stuff, your food stuff. I went back and had a look to see what your most popular video was. It's the one with you in the College Hill Hospital or something like that.
16:56Jaack Maate:Yeah, that's an old ghost one. Yeah.
16:57Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah, and I've got to say, you're singing Daisy Daisy in it, and I was like, because you're not trying, but I'm like, this guy's got a bit. I could hear the dulcet tones of your voice.
17:08Jaack Maate:And then I went for kicks and giggles. I got a vocal coach in Nashville. It was just like, if you're going to get a vocal coach anywhere, get one in Nashville. So I did that for a few months just for fun and got better at that. So I can sing all right. I'm not going to cut some records. I mean, maybe with the right engineer I could do pretty well, but I can carry a tune okay.
17:26Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah, I bet you can. He just keeps getting cooler. I'm waiting for him to say something that makes him uncool.
17:32Jaack Maate:What's the single best thing about Nashville? If you're looking for a timeout, which I feel like being over here, Brits love a good timeout, it's great because it's just bar after bar after bar with really good live music and a really busy street. But that's like the tourist draw. I think for me, it's just home.
17:50Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah.
17:50Jaack Maate:Right? It's like my family's there. There's parts of Tennessee now that are still untouched that are just wide open farmlands. and those beautiful mountains. So I think that for me is the draw to Tennessee. It's just the natural landscape. But for a tourist, it's probably that one stretch we call Broadway.
18:06Kalani Ghost Hunter:Oh, yeah, okay. I've heard that. My favorite band of all time were formed in Nashville. Do you know?
18:12Jaack Maate:What's that? Can you guess? Kings of Leon. Yeah. They went to my high school.
18:17Kalani Ghost Hunter:Fuck. He's the coolest guy in the world. We found the coolest guy in the world. Wow.
18:23Jaack Maate:Yeah, so if you go type in Mount Juliet High School, you can tie that to Kings of Leon. Mount... Juliet High School, Kings of Leon What the fuck? What, all four of them?
18:34Kalani Ghost Hunter:I don't know if it's all four... Well, aren't they brothers or cousins or... I think... Yeah, they're cousins, yeah. They're cousins. I don't know why you didn't write Kings of Leon next time. You're just looking at the school at the moment, aren't you? Yeah. Jared. Jared attended Mount Juliet High School. Yeah, because... What year did he graduate? What year did Jared from Kings of Leon... Sorry, listeners, I'm doing this for me. He flew to Poland recently to go and watch Kingsley on. Yeah, I fucking love him, mate.
19:07Kalani Ghost Hunter:He attended as a freshman but left school early after he was given a bass guitar in a band formed in 1999. So he was born in 86. He left when he was 13.
19:17Jaack Maate:Okay, he might have been in with my oldest brother, but I don't remember when my oldest brother was in school. That's the coolest thing ever. Have you ever run into them? I know people that have, but I haven't. I'll be honest, I know one song, and you know what song that is. Sex on Fire. Everyone knows that song.
19:32Kalani Ghost Hunter:How are you from Nashville and you don't know more Kings of Leon songs? Not your style of music? It's not my genre. It's not my favorite.
19:38Jaack Maate:It's not to say that I've listened to it and I didn't like it. I just haven't taken the time to listen to it. Right, right. Because I have a really wide range of music that I enjoy. It's just, if I haven't taken the time to listen to them, I don't know if I like it or not. Who's your favorite artist? Depends on the day. Depends on the genre. If we don't go Johnny Cash, I assume. Yeah, I love Johnny Cash. but I don't listen to that 24-7. I grew up listening to Escape the Fate with my brothers, and then that was Hawthorne Heights, that whole punk alt-emo era. I like really, really old music. I like classical music.
20:12Jaack Maate:Lil Wayne's probably my favorite rapper.
20:14Kalani Ghost Hunter:Oh, wow. Lil Wayne, wow. I went for a Lil Wayne phase. Absolutely loved him at high school.
20:19Jaack Maate:Wow. I think everyone has a Lil Wayne phase.
20:22Kalani Ghost Hunter:I don't think you have, have you? It's coming. oh my god one day i'm just gonna come in just singing lollipop i watched a documentary about kings of leon about two nights ago and i think one of the things about them to give you some credit is they weren't ever massive in america like they blew up outside of america yeah because i think caleb's kicked off a few times to be like i don't know why we don't get the support from our own country yeah i'll be honest like at home i can't even get
20:49Jaack Maate:a news article i've been in the bbc how many times i've been in national news in the u.s and my local paper will not do anything. Why? That's so strange.
20:58Kalani Ghost Hunter:Because whenever you go to a town or, because this is the great thing about your content, when American tourists come over, they tend to go to like the typical like London, Manchester, even a York, something like that. But you go to really niche towns and cities. And to Norwich.
21:12Jaack Maate:I like, the thing with Norwich is you've got to be going to Norwich. You can't just pass through. No, there's no reason to be there. It has to be a dedicated drive to Norwich. You're not going to be like, ah, you know, we're heading up the M1. Let's stop. No, like you got to go over there.
21:23Kalani Ghost Hunter:What made you do that dedicated try? Why were you pulled towards Norwich?
21:27Jaack Maate:The cathedral.
21:28Kalani Ghost Hunter:Oh, okay.
21:29Jaack Maate:Yeah. Because I love cathedrals. Like genuinely, I think what initially brought me over here was the history. Obviously I was doing ghost hunting at the time, but the history is what brought me here. So it's like the cathedrals, I've been to so many and like each one has something special about it that I enjoy. But the cathedral was the main draw. And then obviously there's a lot of food there that I've gotten to try. And there was a spud that I wanted to try from Zack and Potato. so I went there and made a couple days out of it and been back a few times but I honestly was also super impressed with there's so many medieval churches I think there's more medieval churches in Norwich than any other place north of Spain yeah this is true I've heard this what was it a church for every week a pub for every day yeah god you know your shit you do yeah so the reason
22:12Kalani Ghost Hunter:I bring that up is because we've seen news articles from our like EDP evening news about
22:18Jaack Maate:you yeah but you won't get any back home from no you can go look they made an article about me when i was 13 about getting my eagle scout right and that probably oh and there was another one so when i played high school american football uh i was a mr football semi-finalist and uh i was an all-state player what does that mean in so mr football each classification so like there's different divisions in tennessee which tennessee is super competitive for for football right but i was in 6a which is the highest public school classification. So it depends on how many students are in your school. Okay.
22:49Jaack Maate:So out of all of Tennessee, everyone in that division, they picked four people to be in the running for Mr. Football. So I was an offensive lineman. So linemen were put in their own category. So in that respect, I was one out of the top four. Wow. So I was really good at football. I thought that was what I was going to do, everyone that plays. Was that the dream? That was the dream, yeah. And then it just didn't roll the way I wanted it to. things happened and then life happened so here i am this is more exciting what what he's doing now
23:19Kalani Ghost Hunter:yeah well as you said like i don't know if it was when we first started or before we started recording you now get to travel and go to all these different places like norwich yeah doing this could play in the nfl or could be a norwich cathedral stuck in america yeah you're not getting all the food over there did you play with anyone when you when you were playing that went on to
23:38Jaack Maate:make it yeah so there's a guy named Terrell Dodson he plays for he used to play for the Dolphins he might be somewhere else now he's like a linebacker um we also played against a guy called Juwan Jennings which he was a uh when the San Francisco 49ers were in the Super Bowl like a year or two ago he was a wide receiver that caught a touchdown and threw a touchdown wow um and you played alongside him well I played against him which that wasn't fun um he was he was good still
24:06Kalani Ghost Hunter:was good but this is a dumb question but is it super easy so how old were you when you were when
24:11Jaack Maate:you were playing at this level so i played from the ages of five until i was almost 20.
24:15Kalani Ghost Hunter:so let's take this pick a random age like maybe 15 is it super easy to tell who who's gonna make it at that
24:23Jaack Maate:at that age you have a pretty good idea i mean because part of that is size too like that's the biggest thing if somebody's not really the size they need to be it's really tough to even get scene um but you've got a pretty good idea at 15 right granted there's some people that like develop a little bit more later so like 16 17 18 but you have a pretty good like you have an idea of who's gonna be really good at 15 because they're just like a grown man yeah at 15 years
24:49Kalani Ghost Hunter:old it's great you see some photos even over here don't you know it's like this this player's 14 and looks massive yeah i i did a trip once but when i was doing my youtube days i got invited to go to dallas in texas to spend a week living as a um dallas cowboy yeah so we went on the pitch and we did the we did the cheerleading with the girls and then we ate all the calories that they eat in a day and we did like the jump test like the reach test yeah yeah the vertical yeah yeah how good
25:15Jaack Maate:your vertical oh that was not great never good at vertical i was made to do one thing and that was move other human beings you're asking me to run fast or jump high i'm not your guy but if you need me to move someone, I can do that.
25:28Kalani Ghost Hunter:So you don't really care about the ball.
25:29Jaack Maate:You're there for the people. Also, if you watch football, the guy that starts with the ball every play, that snaps it, that was me.
25:35Kalani Ghost Hunter:Ah, you throw it back to the quarterback, did you? Right, okay.
25:38Jaack Maate:Which you'd think it was easy until you try and do it, and you realize how hard it is to make sure it's not flying over his head every time. Yeah, right. Because people watch it on TV, they're like, oh, I could do that. And then all of a sudden they get a ball and they try it, and they're like, oh. Yeah.
25:52Kalani Ghost Hunter:It's an unnatural way to throw as well.
25:54Jaack Maate:Well, because it's not just back. No. You think it's just back, but you actually have to go up, back, and through. Okay. So that's the motion, but you're doing it really fast. So when you snap the ball instead of like a pendulum, because if you do that, the angle is going to be way higher than you need it. Yeah. So you have to go up, back, and then through. So you throw it at three legs? Yeah. So I snap it with one hand, and I'm having to block another giant human being with the other one in succession.
26:21Kalani Ghost Hunter:I think it's a sport that is massively underappreciated. here isn't it yeah i've never seen a game i think british people don't tend to like it because it's very stop-starty it is that's my the ads i've tried to watch the super bowl well i think the world cup showed people yeah killed people were fuming with the hydration break but in america
26:38Jaack Maate:that's what we're used to yeah it's just like they pack in so many ads granted we don't have a tv license we pay for right we pay for it with every couple minutes there's dumb ads that's a good point yeah so they get their money somewhere yeah it's just from there do you like baseball Baseball I never really got into. I'm glad you said that. I feel like it, I'm sorry, but it feels like watching paint dry. Yes!
26:58Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yes! We went over to New York to go and watch England play in the World Cup. Yeah. And Jack got us tickets to go and see the Yankees. I thought you have to when you're there. Yeah, I mean, New York Yankees. Yeah. We left in the second inning.
27:09Jaack Maate:Yeah, I mean, it's, I'm not hating on the sport by any means. It's just the same reason people don't like football, I think, is 10 times worse for baseball. Stopping and starting. there's a lot of walking around swinging bats yeah and very rarely hitting the ball yeah we
27:24Kalani Ghost Hunter:were watching going up they're cheering like the yankees fans were cheering because the other team couldn't hit it and we got that i want to see something happen yeah yeah i went to see i've seen one um nfl game in my life and i think it was about 2016 i went to see the cowboys play the packers and the packers won in like the dying seconds with a field kick is it called field goal yeah field goal and it was genuinely one of the best things i've ever seen live like genuinely And that's coming from someone who was a complete anti-football fan, if you know what I mean. And that was super fun. Baseball, and again, sorry to the people that love baseball.
27:55Kalani Ghost Hunter:Not for me. Not for me. This episode is brought to you by Snapdragon. The man to my right here, Stevie White, was at uni, probably about, what was it, 1962 when you were at uni? And how much of that time did you have laptop problems? Not sure how much laptops were really around in the 60s, to be honest. But luckily, I went to uni 2012 to 2015. and it was very, very frustrating, to be honest. My whole course revolved around using my laptop. I had a specific program I had to use and it absolutely killed the battery. Well, let's say I had a time machine and you could use that time machine to go back in time.
28:32Kalani Ghost Hunter:What would you change? I'd find youthful me without the grays and I'd say, here, mate, have a laptop powered by Snapdragon. How would a laptop powered by Snapdragon have helped you at uni? Well, if my PC was powered by Snapdragon, It'd be built for lectures, side projects, study sessions, streaming, and I'd never have to worry about charge. And with Snapdragon Performance, you can stay on top of every assignment, project, and deadline. But sadly, it can't help you with all the people that rejected you during Freshers Week, Stevie. 30:50Kalani Ghost Hunter:what was so we know you as a good sportsman what were you like at school were you a well-behaved
30:54Jaack Maate:kid were you a naughty kid um I was naughty but I was a good student okay so I was very mischievous but I had really good grades so and I was really good about doing things and getting other people to do them with me and then they would take the fall for those things do the good grades almost help you get away with the bad a little bit yeah because people are like ah i mean there's no way he's so i'll give you a story and i've never told this story but one of my teachers uh left the classroom and me and a couple of other of my buddies just love to take the piss out of them so we found a photo online of him and his wife plastered on a cruise completely drunk and like Like in the photo, you can tell they're both drunk.
31:38Jaack Maate:The elevator's up top, but nobody's in there. So we find this photo, and I give the idea of, hey, you know, we should print it out and just put them all over his classroom. And somebody else did it. And we printed them all out, and they hung them all up. So I was the mastermind, I guess. And he comes back in, and his face just gets tomato red, and he's pissed, and he's ripping all the photos off and he loses his shit. And then no one wanted to snitch on each other because, like, you don't snitch. That's the rule. But he just had a guess on who it was. Luckily, I wasn't one of those guesses. The other two were right on.
32:19Jaack Maate:But I was just sitting there like, couldn't be me.
32:24Kalani Ghost Hunter:And they didn't snitch on you, the other two? No, they're good pals. Wow. Well, that answers our follow-up question because we always ask, don't we, what's the naughtiest thing anyone's ever done? I think that's creatively mischievous, I think.
32:36Jaack Maate:Yeah, I like to do things that had purpose, right? Because there's not much we could have done that he hadn't seen. Yeah, right. But nothing's better than seeing yourself drunk all over your classroom with your printer, paper, and ink that you had to pay for it. It's the perfect crime. It was this because we used all the colour ink.
32:51Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah, it's the perfect crime. Do you remember we, I don't know if you guys did this in America, but it's so shit, but we would get like tissue and we would wet the tissue. Stick it to the ceiling?
33:00Jaack Maate:Yeah, we did that. Um, there for a while, I never did this one, but I had friends that did it. There was the, the PP monster videos where you would just stand in the stall and spin around and piss on everything. That was a trend for a little while. Did you guys ever have the Hornets? No. You would fold up paper to be like a little just arrow. Yeah. You would take rubber bands and just shoot them at each other. No, but that's good. But they hurt. Yeah, I bet. And that was a thing for a while.
33:25Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah. Um, God, what else did we have back then? We did that weird fucking thing. There's no way the Americans got involved in this. Do you remember when we was making each other pass out? Oh, the breathing thing. Yeah. We had this stupid thing where you would like, can't quite remember, and don't do this at home, but like you run around, you get out of breath, you go on your hands and knees, and you like breathe in and out, and then you get people to press your chest quick, and then you faint. I think you're basically trying to deprive your brain of oxygen. No, we didn't. We did a lot of things to hurt ourselves.
33:55Kalani Ghost Hunter:But we used to play slapsies all the time, where you just get to slap your friends. Did you guys used to pants each other? Yeah.
33:59Jaack Maate:That was one that I think transcended the ocean.
34:03Kalani Ghost Hunter:There was the one where you get someone to kneel down behind someone, push them over, but people would break their arms.
34:08Jaack Maate:Did you guys do the planking thing? What was that? Where people would go lay on stuff, just like completely straight. Yeah, that was a weird trend. I completely forgot about that.
34:15Kalani Ghost Hunter:You'd just see photos and someone's just lying there. Why is that funny?
34:18Jaack Maate:Or let's get on this table and just lay flat.
34:21Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah, I remember that. We had Knuckles as well. Did you ever play Knuckles? Where you'd put your fist on there, I'd put mine here, and you'd throw a coin as hard as you could at the other ones. I never tried that. You all just get cuts over it. Why did we do that? See, I think it sums up English culture. Like we're self-deprecating. Our human is very self-deprecating and I guess that transcended to being kids at school and hurting each other, maybe. It was a weird time. I want to ask you a little bit more about school before we move on. My sort of impression of an American school is only what I see in the movies.
34:52Kalani Ghost Hunter:I'm talking big lockers. You meet up every morning. You probably got a picture of the girl you fancy at the back. Is that true? did you have lockers uh yeah we do have lockers yeah um did i go to my locker every day no it was
35:04Jaack Maate:just honestly like a place to store your stuff yeah uh because like like college was the same way for me or university i would go and they would give me books and then we would never use the books yeah so i would just stick them in my locker so like if it's a class i knew i didn't need a book yeah i'd just stick it in there or like if i needed like cologne or deodorant or something at
35:22Kalani Ghost Hunter:school yeah i just leave it in my locker i always wanted a locker because we'd see it did you never want a lot i got a locker in high school but like you'd very rarely use it yeah i've written that was all that was my dream to have a locker we didn't really use it i thought like at school like no girls were interested in me and i've i've seen the movies i know how this works it's always by the locker i wanted a locker and i wanted to like open the door so i can't see down the corridor and then i shut the door and she stood there just this beautiful creature she falls in love with me. We have a family.
35:51Kalani Ghost Hunter:Doesn't sound like you wanted a locker.
35:53Jaack Maate:Sounds like he just
35:53Kalani Ghost Hunter:wanted a partner. He just wanted love. School was a tough time, wasn't it? I met Fiona in a nightclub, in a horrible nightclub in Norwich. No lockers there. No. No. But it was more romantic to meet in the corridor, isn't it? Yeah. Are your schools not like high school musical then? Are people not just bursting out into song and stuff?
36:14Jaack Maate:No, no. That's a bit strange, honestly. I know people have that perception. The yellow buses are true though. All the buses are yellow. Right. I know a lot of people here are like, I just thought that was in the movie. So every bus is yellow. But it's funny you mention that because I met my wife in high school and we've been together since my senior year of high school. Just by the lockers, right? Yeah, I'd find my way over to her locker. There we go. It's all about the lockers. But it is weird because it's like even in middle school, which is right below high school, you would have people that like, maybe there's a girl you fancy that was a couple lockers down.
36:48Jaack Maate:and you're just like, give them a little peek. So that part is real.
36:52Kalani Ghost Hunter:Well, as you've just said, middle school just before high school. I know in America it's normal first, middle, high. Norwich had this weird thing. We went to first school, middle school, high school. And I think we're the only place in the UK that refers to it as that. Yeah, the rest of the country did primary and secondary. But I went to three different schools, first, middle, high. And whenever we speak to our guests about this and they go, middle school, why are you talking like an American? In between. Yeah, but Norwich has changed now. Norwich has now gone to primary and secondary. Have they really?
37:20Kalani Ghost Hunter:But we got that. We got the American experience without the locker.
37:23Jaack Maate:Yeah. What does Milton Keynes do?
37:26Kalani Ghost Hunter:I'm not sure. They've just got roundabouts.
37:30Jaack Maate:Roundabouts and parking lot.
37:31Kalani Ghost Hunter:It's a rogue place. Well, you call your years like, what is it?
37:34Jaack Maate:Freshman? Yeah, so you've got elementary school, middle school, high school. High school is freshman to senior year. So that goes freshman, sophomore. Sophomore, junior, senior.
37:44Kalani Ghost Hunter:What ages are you doing now?
37:46Jaack Maate:So that's like 14 to 18.
37:49Kalani Ghost Hunter:Are your dinners the same at school? Do you have packed lunch and school dinners? Or just everyone goes to the school dinner?
37:55Jaack Maate:You can bring your own lunch. Okay, I thought we differed there, but that's the same, isn't it? No, you can bring your own lunch. The school food is all right.
38:05Kalani Ghost Hunter:Right. Good grim. Yeah, I was a packed lunch guy. Was you a packed lunch guy? I was a packed lunch guy. Yeah, we had... Everyone used to... The people that did used to eat at school had the pasta kings. Do you remember them? Yeah. That was a British staple, wasn't it? Everyone had a pasta cake.
38:18Jaack Maate:Were you guys old enough to have the little turkey tails? Turkey Twizzlers. Turkey Twizzlers.
38:24Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah, Jamie Oliver banned them. I know. I never got to try them. I don't know if I've ever tried them. I wonder if you could find them anymore. Are they literally banned or are they just like a... You must be able to get them in other countries. I've never seen it. That's why I was asking. They're like 6 % meat or something like that. It looks like a Greg sausage roll. Sorry, I didn't mean that. I forget how much Kalani knows. Kalani, I've got a tough question. Because obviously in America, people worry about the schools and stuff that happens there. Do you have to take classes on what would happen in the event of an emergency?
38:57Jaack Maate:I mean, we would have like emergency preparedness. Because it's like, I know everyone jumps to like shooting stuff. Which that obviously is something that we would touch. But a lot of it was like tornadoes. So like if a tornado is blowing in while you're in school, what's the procedure for that? Because there's a lot of crazy weather that can happen. Yeah, right. A strong enough tornado can pick a building up and move it. What is the procedure for that? You go in the hallway where it's like super structurally sound and hope for the best. Or they'll put you in like the bathroom where it's like a super solid concrete structure.
39:25Jaack Maate:That's insane. There's a lot of things you got to worry about. Yeah. It's just like the weather was probably the biggest one though. Or like a fire drill, all that kind of stuff.
39:32Kalani Ghost Hunter:Well, as a kid going to school in America, would you worry about the shooting? Is that something that is on your mind? Because over here, that's our... I know, yeah.
39:40Jaack Maate:People ask me all the time, they're like, oh, how many people have you seen get shot? and I'm like, none? Right. I'm like, I know you guys see that because that's what you're shown. Yeah. But not every school will you have someone walking in to do that. I think it's gotten worse as time has gone on because when I was a kid, it was a lot fewer and further between.
40:00Kalani Ghost Hunter:That's how it seemed to us over here, but I'm not educated enough to give that opinion. But I did feel growing up, it would be like you'd hear like maybe once every couple of years and now it seems like it's happening all the time.
40:10Jaack Maate:Yeah, and I think part of it too is social media is such a big play. yeah for sure um and i think the other thing is like the moment someone does that the news jumps on it so it's a really bad way to become infamous yeah um there's a lot of problems with it which i'm not going to dive into that but yeah it wasn't anything that i ever really thought of and i don't think anyone's really thinking of it until it happens yeah yeah well i think as as english
40:32Kalani Ghost Hunter:people we're we assume guns are everywhere in america yeah obviously we've been quite a few now and you just never really see it no you know you're not exposed to it but you know that you know they're there yeah you know they're there but it's the same with like we have all the bad press at the moment about stabbings and stuff not to get too deep yeah because like that's that's
40:51Jaack Maate:what we see in the u.s yeah it's like before i came over here i was expecting to walk around london and just see people bleeding out on the yeah yeah and it's just not the case obviously there's problems and obviously things happen yeah but it's just you're only being fed the negative
41:03Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah, for sure. Right, let's make it a little bit lighter then. The last thing I want to know about school, Kalani, is I don't understand. Fee and I, my partner, who's not here today, we were watching a Netflix documentary last night. It was actually quite a gruesome one about something that happened in Idaho. I'll make it a lighter note and then I take it back there. Yeah, I was going to say. But they were talking about these houses called like Alpha Phi. Oh, you're talking about sorority and fraternity houses.
41:30Jaack Maate:What are they?
41:31Kalani Ghost Hunter:We don't have them over here.
41:32Jaack Maate:I feel like if Brits had fraternity and sororities, there'd be some hurt livers. Right. More so than there already is. Okay. Because it's essentially like they have different groups in college that you can subscribe to or like apply to. And like there's different fraternities and sororities. So fraternities for men, sororities for women. And then like they would do like mixers where like certain fraternities will have parties with certain sororities. And they say it's for like academic purposes and to gain your network. but it's honestly just a great way to get pissed with organized events. Yeah.
42:05Jaack Maate:And they just have massive parties. So have you ever saw like Project X? Yes. Not quite that level, but like that's like the kind of parties that fraternities and such will do.
42:15Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah. I watched a series years ago called Blue Mountain State. Yeah, yeah. And that was mental. Like it's all that kind of stuff.
42:21Jaack Maate:Yeah, no, fraternities or frat houses for short are crazy.
42:26Kalani Ghost Hunter:So because we were talking about this on the drive up and you said, oh, it's male and female. and I googled this yesterday and I obviously went on a website that wasn't accurate because I went on Pornhub and he was like what ID I'm not putting that in I did put it in I'm an idiot I put it in first day bang brilliant what are you gonna carry on that yeah because it said it said that like sorority is like a posh version of a fraternity sorority no fraternity sorority is for women oh literally that is it yeah what do americans think of british drinking culture
43:04Jaack Maate:this is what i'll tell you because i know a lot of brits are like the americans can't keep up with us but i feel like there's a caveat to that because if you keep a brit from doing a packet in the bathroom mid-session they're gonna be on the floor so brits can drink i'm not gonna take that from brits yeah but brits can drink a lot more when they their nose is white and powdery Right, right. So if you take that out of the equation and you just have a one-for-one, let's see who can drink the most, it's a lot closer than you think.
43:33Kalani Ghost Hunter:Do you know what? It's a fucking great point. Well, the reason I... It's a great point. Can you remember, I don't know if it was last year or the year before, but there was like a trend going around in America where they were like downing WKDs or something. And like we were watching it and just being like... It was called... Was it called, oh, you've been iced? Something like that. Yeah, they're doing something. Smirnoff ice. Yeah. Yeah, and they were just drinking it. And we were thinking, like, that's like a sweet, nice drink. And they were acting like it was the maddest thing they've ever done.
44:00Kalani Ghost Hunter:We do put ourselves on a pedestal above Americans. We do think that, like, you summed it up pretty well. Like, we do think we can drink on the table. That's a very good point. Have you been to a Wetherspoons?
44:11Jaack Maate:I have. So one of the things I do with a few of my guests is we'll go and play the game. So I'll post my table number, and it's usually shut down within 10 minutes or less because so many waters come in.
44:22Kalani Ghost Hunter:do they get pissed off the people that work there uh i usually will ask before we do it because i
44:26Jaack Maate:don't want to be an inconvenience yeah so every time like i don't even include in the video i'm like look this is what i'm going to do if you don't want me to do it i won't but i just wanted to clear it with you before i blow up your order system right and they're like yeah that's fine and then all of a sudden you start ding ding ding ding ding ding ding and they're just like hey we can't process all of this so we'll just give you as much as we can i'm like yeah it's fine i guess
44:46Kalani Ghost Hunter:at first they're like yeah we'll take all that money and then once all the work comes in like fucking hell it's actually worse than we thought it was gonna be yeah how many orders do you think
44:53Jaack Maate:well i i was watching the last time we did it and they were going like so the screen has all the orders and it was like pages and pages and they were going through like six pages and that was all mine wow but i ended up we we drank for like four hours straight and we were both pretty pissed by the end of it we're still good yeah but i was handing out drinks to people because it's like there's no human way humanly possible i'm gonna drink 90 shots plus like 30 pints if i drank that them to be in the hospital yeah yeah yeah um which weather spoons was this this was the one it's called what is it the the walnut tree the the one like right somewhere around here i think i know what you mean yes it's the only one in like northeast london okay yeah i've definitely the
45:32Kalani Ghost Hunter:walnut tree i can't lay in stone okay right that's where it's at yeah what was what's is there a specific weather spoons that come to mind when that you particularly like uh there's one i think
45:43Jaack Maate:in Liverpool that has a disco ball?
45:46Kalani Ghost Hunter:Oh, okay.
45:47Jaack Maate:I think it used to be a Lloyd's. And then when Weatherspoons took over, they kept the disco ball on the dance floor. There's still that spin-off of Weatherspoons and the Lloyd's ones.
45:57Kalani Ghost Hunter:In Norwich, we have Queen of Iceni. And that's got a dance floor.
46:00Jaack Maate:I do like the dance floor component, but it is weird because it's like at home, when you go out to drink, everyone's 21 and up. Here, you'll see freshly 18-year-old people.
46:10Kalani Ghost Hunter:Not even that, 15s.
46:11Jaack Maate:Yeah, I mean, the people that are legal, but you get what I'm saying. It's like, you guys are, I feel like I'm like grandpa. Right. And I'm 28. Yeah. But I'm like, my brain can't comprehend I'm in a room with like children.
46:24Kalani Ghost Hunter:What is the best rated Wetherspoons in the country?
46:27Jaack Maate:I don't think I know.
46:28Kalani Ghost Hunter:No, my phones are less.
46:29Jaack Maate:What is the qualification for it to be the best? Just like maybe like. There's one in Wales that is in an old theater. Is there? That one is really cool. Do you know what that's called? I think it's in Hlengachlan. Okay. or
46:42Kalani Ghost Hunter:Hlandidnau right let me google then we're gonna google hang on I can tell you yeah oh there's an article the top 20 Wetherspoons pubs revealed oh okay are there any in Wales see if there's any in Wales so this doesn't say they're in a particular order though the Imperial in Exeter is one of the best Exeter Broccoli this is good shit I love Wetherspoons a couple of London's it London again Bishop Stalford isn't that near Birchie it is I don't know what It doesn't look that great on the picture, though. It's the official 20. Okay. Or the palladium. The palladium.
47:16Jaack Maate:In Hlandudno.
47:17Kalani Ghost Hunter:Okay. So it's L-L-A-N-D-U-D-N-O. I'm going to see if it's on this list. There's a nice looking one in Edinburgh. We've been there. Have we? Yeah, we've been there when we was on tour. Look at that. That's the inside of that one. Oh, that is cool. Oh, my God.
47:33Jaack Maate:They're crazy, aren't they? The way they look. Yeah. I mean, it's the fact... I know a lot of people give Weatherspoons grief, but a lot of these buildings would be getting destroyed if they weren't that. A lot of them are old libraries and cinema.
47:45Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah, so there is some preservation to that. I've just thought, you know that top 20 Wetherspoons? Yeah. Let's go to every single one. What a series that is. Yeah, but that's Edinburgh. Yeah. Then there was Exeter. You're going two completely opposite ends of the UK. You could do either. I reckon you could do all 20 in. Just plan a trip. Yeah. 48 hours you could do? That was mental. I think we do it. What's the furthest you've driven here? well we we actually drove from here to a mountain in germany called wank mountain because we're immature we wanted to call the video we drove a thousand miles to wank together in germany yeah anything for the title how did it do yeah yeah it was funny and they i think they lean into it because when you were there you could buy merch that said i love wank on it yeah but they had wank socks so they really leant into it but here i mean if we i think we've driven to edinburgh before?
48:39Kalani Ghost Hunter:Do you drive when you're here, right? How do you find driving there?
48:42Jaack Maate:It's not bad. No? I mean, at home, obviously, the roads are a little bit bigger, but I'm used to it now. I've driven so much, so I think the furthest I've driven in one go here was from Cornwall to St. Andrews, Scotland. In one day? Yeah, one go. What's that, like 11 hours? Yeah. Fuck. Why? I had an event I had to be at the next day. Oh, wow. And I don't trust the trains here, so.
49:03Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah, that's fair. Yeah. Wow, fuck. I say we do all 20 in 48 hours. I think it's possible. That'd be so difficult. Now, Kalani, let's talk about you and your content. You make some great stuff. I really enjoy it. I didn't know you when you were the ghost hunter. Yeah. But that's how you got into content creation, right? Because we'll keep it quick, but you were a wedding videographer, and you worked in the Tennessee state capital as well, which is pretty cool. And then you decided to leave that to focus on ghost hunting.
49:33Jaack Maate:I was also a plumber at one point.
49:34Kalani Ghost Hunter:Were you? You're a man of many talents.
49:36Jaack Maate:I was a phone salesman at one point. I had my own business at one point and COVID kind of threw that for a wrinkle. I've done a lot of things. How was the business? What were you doing? I was flipping items on Amazon. Oh, okay. So I'd just go, I think the most I ever spent in one weekend was like 75 grand on just items to flip and sell on Amazon.
49:53Kalani Ghost Hunter:What were you buying?
49:55Jaack Maate:Shoes. Right. Yeah. So I did that from the ages of like 14 to 18. Have you always been quite entrepreneurial? Well, I grew up really broke. Right. So like my goal growing up was I'm going to change this. Yeah. So that's been my driving force ever since.
50:09Kalani Ghost Hunter:How do you go from working in the government to ghost hunting?
50:14Jaack Maate:Well, there's bullshit in both of them. But there's more in politics. Honestly. What was your job? Can we ask? I was a legislative assistant for just a House of Representatives member in Tennessee. So you were pretty much his eyes and ears. You send all of his emails. You check all of his emails. I was like, you're essentially giving him everything he needs to have other than going to vote.
50:39Kalani Ghost Hunter:Was that hard to get into? I imagine that's quite, you got to jump through a lot of hoops to get.
50:42Jaack Maate:Well, so with my degree, the next step was going to be going to law school. That was like the next thing I was thinking of doing. And you could actually work there and go to law school at night. So that was going to be my next step was work there for a while and then go into law and figure out what I wanted to do. Because my sister's an attorney for the Navy. so she was always like an inspiration for me to like push and and do things that you know i thought i could do so i wanted to be an attorney at that point and then it's just a really hard job because i'm not really good at telling people i like them when i don't i don't have that customer service smile because if i don't like somebody i just tell them to fuck off do you like us that does yeah no it's been good i i would have left if i was happy um but i i like being honest with people And for some people, that's just not the best way to communicate.
51:31Jaack Maate:And that wasn't a good environment for me. And I'm really grateful for that job, though, because... Were you there alone? I did an internship there, and then I had a hired position, and I was actually, I turned down a salaried position. What's crazy is I decided to do content, so I quit that job. And a week after I quit my job, the only job that I ever would have gone back for working for a guy that I really liked came onto my desk, and I said no. and like that was a job that I actually wanted yeah and I would have been happy working but I was like okay this was a test like if I say yes now I'm giving up on myself so I just said no
52:09Kalani Ghost Hunter:that's such a big risk isn't it yeah so because I can't imagine that you jumped straight into content creation and the money was there straight away oh no the money money was not there I was
52:17Jaack Maate:I was literally so I was living out of my car uh to Megan's meet enough to make content so my wife was living with her parents i was living in our car driving around sleeping in it
52:29Kalani Ghost Hunter:just to get the content going wow and this is the ghost hunting that was the ghost hunting so i would
52:34Jaack Maate:go live stream when tiktok first introduced live streaming i'd go to haunted places all over the u.s and spend hours in a given night with ghost hunting equipment and telling the history of a place and you drive to each place i drive to each place because i couldn't afford to fly
52:50Kalani Ghost Hunter:that's that's fairly inspirational to anyone out there who's thinking of doing content because i A lot of people make the mistake these days. I think they surveyed a lot of school kids, and the number one job people wanted to be was content creation. So they think it's super easy to get into. Like we were - No, it's tough. Yeah, I was doing YouTube videos for seven years, didn't make a penny. And then people just see this and think it's an overnight thing. So we spoke about the longest drive you've done in the UK. Let's flip it. What's the longest drive you did in the US?
53:16Jaack Maate:Hour-wise, I don't remember, but it was from San Francisco to Outer Banks, North Carolina, which that's coast to coast pretty much. That was a long... That must have taken a week. That's over 40-something hours. Wow. That was tough. Yeah. Granted, like, you're sleeping in the middle of it, but it's like the whole thing you're doing is just driving and filling up for fuel.
53:33Kalani Ghost Hunter:What was the reason that you were going from...
53:35Jaack Maate:I had to film a wedding in North Carolina.
53:38Kalani Ghost Hunter:Oh, so this wasn't even for content creation.
53:40Jaack Maate:No, this was... So listen, when I started my wedding videography business, because that's what got me into holding a camera, my wife and her mom had, like, a photography business. I had always been fascinated with video. I just didn't have money to get into it. Right. And I had enough to buy like a Panasonic GH4. And that was like my starter camera. So I made all these weddings happen. And I went on Facebook to every Facebook group in the US, joined it and was advertising free travel cost and a super reduced wedding rate just to get business. Wow. So I literally had people were like, hey, I'm in Arizona and you're in Nashville.
54:16Jaack Maate:I'll pay you two grand to come film my wedding. Yeah. Yeah, I'll do it. And you drive. And I drive. that just to work wow and that was on the weekends while i was still working at the political office so the moment friday would hit i would leave and hit the road to go film my wedding on saturday and then leave saturday night to make it back before i had to go to work on monday so you're driving all the way through the night at times yeah how were you not knackered i was but unfortunately it doesn't matter if you're knackered if it's got to be done how did you jump into ghost
54:49Kalani Ghost Hunter:hunting from that? How did you go, you know what, I need to quit these jobs?
54:52Jaack Maate:I was in Texas. So I'd always been interested in it because I watched the shows and I had an experience when I was younger that kind of got me interested. And anytime me and my wife would stay somewhere, we would try and stay in like the haunted room. Well, we're in Texas to film a quinceanera, which is essentially just a 15 year old's birthday party. And we stayed at this haunted hotel. And my wife had the idea, she's like, hey, you know, you should film a video here and see how it does. I was like, we'll try whatever yeah so i make a tiktok and that tiktok hit like 15k which to me now i'm just saying but back then when you have no following that's great massive yeah so i was like okay let's try a few more and i made a few more and then i had like 10 000 followers in like a week and a half wow and then that was around the same time that i'm like okay i just started this but i feel like if i can do this right maybe we can make something out of this but i'm never gonna know unless I try.
55:45Jaack Maate:So I told my wife, I sat her down and I was like, look, I know we just got married and we don't make the most money because she was making more money than me at the time with her photography business. And I was like, but I feel like if I put all I have into this, I can make it something. She's like, yeah, sure. Go for it. And I was like, okay, well, I was hoping you'd say no because now I have to actually like balls up and do it. So I quit my job and i was like okay i'm gonna go for it i'm gonna give it everything i got and then within
56:17Kalani Ghost Hunter:six months i had a million followers within six months yes that's mad fucking hell and i was
56:23Jaack Maate:every night i was somewhere new filming streaming would you post every day yes multiple times the
56:29Kalani Ghost Hunter:consistency is a huge thing isn't it and you would you would edit and i did everything wow i i still
56:34Jaack Maate:don't have a team it's still me and my wife and does she what's her role within now she does a lot more editing for me and she films everything for me. Right. Um, but we're, we're like a content machine. Cause like, like when I'm on my groove, if I'm not, I don't have anything going on, I'll try and post like 12 to 15 times a day, a mixture of like photos, videos, stories. And this is on your website, right? Uh, well that's on Facebook, but it's like my website is the catch all for everything. So like I have a few YouTube channels that we've edit and post for. Um, but I do like my wife will do the main trimming and then I'll go in and polish it up with like music and the B-roll and such.
57:08Jaack Maate:Yeah. It's a good system.
57:11Kalani Ghost Hunter:That's, again, another cool story. So if people, we've still got loads to talk about, but what's your website called?
57:17Jaack Maate:It's KalaniGhostHunter.com. And now I'm on like every platform,
57:20Kalani Ghost Hunter:but that's the easiest place to find me everywhere. Yeah, I follow you on TikTok. We won't go into the details of finances, but where do you make the bulk of your revenue? Is it through Facebook? Facebook and YouTube. Oh, okay. Facebook and YouTube. Is TikTok good for you? because we've only started utilizing happy hour clips recently so we're still trying to work it
57:38Jaack Maate:out when i first started yeah uh was great yeah but now the pay is like kind of all over the place yeah well how does that do you know how it works like because uh i have my hunches granted i'm not an expert by any means but i couldn't tell you what makes one video pay certain amounts and one one video pay other amounts like it doesn't make sense to me and i i gave up on trying to figure
57:58Kalani Ghost Hunter:it out i just post and hope for the best yeah because youtube there's a there's a rhyme and
58:03Jaack Maate:reason behind it yeah it's like obviously duration and things like that yeah for sure but when i look
58:07Kalani Ghost Hunter:at the tiktok revenue it's like a creative fund isn't it and someone could watch about 10 videos before they get an ad so they're having to split that money between so many different people it's not a dedicated ad when i think retention also has a big play because it's like if someone's
58:19Jaack Maate:watching your video more than watching other videos right you might get a bigger cut of the
58:23Kalani Ghost Hunter:pie oh well i will binge watch your video sir i appreciate it yeah you're welcome uh let's let's talk about the first um ghost hunt you you filmed so you you were there with your wife she she said to film you filmed then it started to become something so not what was your first real big
58:39Jaack Maate:hit i think the biggest like the first big one was a place called waverly hills sanatorium and you can look it up it's a really spooky place but i think that video hit like 22 million views
58:50Kalani Ghost Hunter:for me on tiktok wow did anything big happen in that video to cause that amount of views or is
58:55Jaack Maate:it just no so every video i'd make was essentially just to promote the live stream i was doing on that same channel so like the video would include just a couple snippets of history maybe a creepy song in there and then it's like if you see me live make sure you tap in right so i did that and got hundreds of millions of views over a year and the streaming is what the only thing i made money from because at that point tiktok didn't have a creator program yeah so the only way i was making money is because people were donating for more content right which is really tough because it's like some nights I'd make, you know, a couple hundred bucks.
59:28Jaack Maate:Yeah. Other nights I'd make 10 bucks. Oh, wow. And when you're living off of that money, that makes it quite stressful.
59:34Kalani Ghost Hunter:How did you keep motivated during those down days?
59:38Jaack Maate:I was making so much content and I was like, okay, well, tonight wasn't great, but we'll try again tomorrow. And it's just like you keep doing that to a point where it's just routine.
59:46Kalani Ghost Hunter:What was the scariest thing you ever saw on these ghost hunting things? First of all, before you answer that, were you a skeptic going into it? Were you a believer?
59:53Jaack Maate:I was more of a believer than I am now. I'm more of a skeptic now. Oh. I won't say I don't believe in it. Yeah. But I've learned that a lot of it is just exaggerated. Yeah. Obviously for content. But there are things that truly do happen that I'm like, I don't have an explanation for.
1:00:09Kalani Ghost Hunter:Right. Well, that you've seen with your own eyes. Yeah.
1:00:11Jaack Maate:So like I've seen like, like for example, if I'm looking over here, I see like a head peek in and it was all black. It didn't have any features, but I could see the physical shape and it was blocking the light behind it. and then I watch it jump back. And like I saw that with my own eyes and I went running after it because I thought it was a person in there with me and it wasn't. Where was this? That was an old church in an old mining town in Pennsylvania that had, if you're familiar with the horror author Anne Rice, she had a giant doll collection. She donated half of this doll collection to this church when she died.
1:00:43Jaack Maate:So this church was filled with all of her dolls.
1:00:47Kalani Ghost Hunter:So you're there at midnight? Streaming, yeah. And you're with your wife? Yeah. Just you see? Yeah. So do people show you around these places?
1:00:55Jaack Maate:I mean, you can get a tour usually, but like when you're left there at night, it's just you. And so you go in and does your wife see this figure? Yeah. Yeah, no, we both saw it. And there's another instance that there's even a YouTube video on it, but it's something ran at us. So like you could feel the floor moving, you could hear it, the wind was moving. And you see me jump out of the way because I'm expecting like to get tackled.
1:01:17Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah.
1:01:18Jaack Maate:And there's nothing there. and like you see my wife holding the camera and it's just shaking in her hands because she's shitting a brick i'm shitting a brick because i'm like what was that yeah and we check the entire house there's nothing there how do you carry on doing these videos after moments like that happen that's the fun parts if i had that happen all the time i'd do it every day because that's the adrenaline yeah i think that's the thing that i really loved is like those moments where i'm like your butthole tightens up that's what i love yeah anything in life that gives me that adrenaline I love.
1:01:50Jaack Maate:And that was the fun of it. It's like when you have moments like that you truly can't explain, those are the moments you love.
1:01:55Kalani Ghost Hunter:If you try and explain, what would you say the head poking around the corner was? What's your best explanation for that?
1:02:01Jaack Maate:I mean, again, I thought it was a person. Right. Like in there with me. Yeah. I checked all the doors. They were all secure. There was no window. They went down into a basement that had no exit, no entry. Yeah. So it's like in my head, I'm like, well, maybe there's like a reflection of somebody outside, but how would the light be blocked at the door? There's no, I tried every feasible option to be like, how can I justify this? And I couldn't come up with one.
1:02:26Kalani Ghost Hunter:With moments like that, why are you more skeptical now?
1:02:31Jaack Maate:I think part of it is because a lot of the shows are super dependent on like the equipment. And the equipment is what I'm more skeptical in because there's a lot of things that can make all those devices go off. yeah you're talking about the emf like the emf readers the rim pods the spirit boxes there's a lot of things that can manipulate those whether it be intentional or not that can perceive or can change the story or make something seem a certain way have you ever felt in danger when you've been doing any of these by living people yes so i was shot at in texas um what you went so casually into that sentence oh and the thing is now it's still it didn't phase me then it didn't phase me now I get maybe that's just the American in me you were shot at yeah so I made this video at goat man's bridge which is another massive video I did have we done that goatsman we did bunny man bridge it's in uh Denton Texas okay not far from Dallas right and the video went so viral that every kid from the age of like 15 to 24 in that town showed up at this so it went from me being there alone to like a couple hundred people standing on this old bridge while you're there sorry while I'm
1:03:38Kalani Ghost Hunter:streaming because they wanted to be on the stream so it's going popular live yeah yeah not not after
1:03:43Jaack Maate:the fact not after the fact so all these people show up i think at one point i had like almost 50k concurrent viewers fuck and all these people are just watching this take place yeah and then all of a sudden we hear up a shot ring out from the woods by us and everyone on the bridge just scatters yeah we're all just running to the cars and there's people fighting and drunk like it was it was crazy the police showed up and uh they were just like hey man love your videos i'm like hey appreciate it you didn't get in any trouble for it then no i mean i wouldn't do anything wrong right right if i would have been trespassing i mean maybe i could have had a problem but like they obviously saw the video and they just showed up because they wanted to see too what do you think the gunshot was for i think it's someone just wanting attention oh okay it may not have been directly at us yeah right but anytime you hear that you're like i'm not going to sit around to try and find out no yeah wow is that is that the most scared you've been that i've also had so i did this thing for a while where i was living in haunted locations so i would go for a week and the cameras would be live streaming for the entire week and i'd set up surveillance cameras all in a place and people would watch me sleep they'd watch me eat they'd watch me be there for
1:04:47Kalani Ghost Hunter:an entire week how do you find and get access to these places sometimes they'll reach out to me
1:04:52Jaack Maate:but like at home there's so many places that are like derelict buildings or maybe they've been renovated enough that it's like okay to be in them yeah they have like a haunted history so
1:05:01Kalani Ghost Hunter:they let people come in and like rent them out right so it's like you can go home and rent out haunted locations in every state so what were you going to say about the live streaming for the for
1:05:10Jaack Maate:the week um we've had i had people that have broken in at points because they know you're there yeah yeah and like obviously most of the time it's just people that are like wanting to see you or wanting to be on the stream but sometimes you you have to worry that it's someone with less positive motives yeah um and like there was one time where i was sleeping and people broke in while I was asleep and I like woke up to strangers standing there in front of me. That was pretty freaky. Granted, luckily they were, they were nice, but I'm like, Hey, you just like broke in. Yeah. You wouldn't do that anywhere else.
1:05:40Jaack Maate:Yeah. Like I obviously could have got him in trouble, but I was just like, please don't do that again.
1:05:45Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah.
1:05:45Jaack Maate:That is weird.
1:05:46Kalani Ghost Hunter:I don't know. I don't know if I could do that. Well, have you heard of Pluckley?
1:05:52Jaack Maate:Yeah. Yeah. So we've been there.
1:05:54Kalani Ghost Hunter:How did you find?
1:05:55Jaack Maate:Well, I haven't released the video from there. That's going to come out in October oh cool but I did have something happen in Black Horse and Pluckley the pub there the pub yeah I actually had some crazy happen that I captured um oh my god Jack
1:06:09Kalani Ghost Hunter:Jack and I did a video in Pluckley October last year yeah Halloween we're not ghost hunters but we have a series where once a month on our sort of Patreon website 4th wall um we do like a travel video so it could be comedy like we said I traveled a thousand miles to wank so and for halloween last year we visited the uk's most haunted town pluckley and um we went there's 12 ghosts that are meant to be there 12 locations or something like that and we did the whole sort of trail of it um and and it was weird it was a bit like what you said when um because it's so popular now there's loads of kids going there so we were camping in the woods at night yeah so we went there and it was so busy like so many people were going there that evening and you'd hear screaming and stuff but a lot of the time it's other people interested or foxes yeah yeah but there is just that element of i don't think i get scared of the idea of a ghost or anything being there but other people do yeah all it takes is one nutter yeah that that's that's essentially where i was like i was never afraid of i went to places that were supposed to have demons i went
1:07:13Jaack Maate:to places that had all sorts of crazy stuff it was never that that scared me it was always the living can you give us a hint of what without spoiling what happened in the um in pluckley I mean, I can just say it. Okay. Because it ain't going to come out until October, but I was up in the top part and I'm just doing my normal thing. And then one of the candles gets blown out and there's no draft or anything. But like I'm filming in the open room where the candles were lit and all of a sudden you just see it go. And I freak out and I'm like, holy shit, this candle just went out. Yeah. And there's no wind up there or anything.
1:07:43Jaack Maate:And like the other candle was still going. So it was just this one. And I was like asking for something to happen at that moment. And then it just went. so that was pretty crazy because i captured that and like obviously i was the only person up there that is crazy but that was pretty cool and like we had some cool stuff happen some knocks and bangs but when you're dealing with places that are so old you can obviously be like well you know that could just be the building settling or something else but i can't are you ever are you
1:08:07Kalani Ghost Hunter:ever kind of like in a battle with your own mind about whether you should fake some stuff to make
1:08:11Jaack Maate:the content uh not really because it's like for me that's not really what i got into that for yeah Like I got into it because I was genuinely interested to see what was out there. Yeah. Now I do know of people that like there's so much pressure because that's their bread and butter. Yeah. That, you know, they might have to make something happen for it to be entertaining. Yeah. Which obviously be honest with your audience. But at the same point, it's just like when you go watch a TV drama, there's a lot of stuff. So it depends on how people frame it. Depends on how I judge them, I guess. Right.
1:08:41Jaack Maate:But no, for me, I never really had the inclination because people would watch me do nothing. Yeah. And that was the beautiful part is there could be nothing happening for four hours that people would watch.
1:08:51Kalani Ghost Hunter:They're doing the same thing you're doing. They're wanting to see something real happen.
1:08:55Jaack Maate:Because obviously we could make all sorts of crazy stuff happen in a space. And from the moment I turn on the camera to the moment I turn it off, it could be busy. But it doesn't make it special. Like whenever you're sitting there for three hours and nothing happens and all of a sudden something really cool happens. And everyone appreciates that more. And I was live streaming too. It's not like I go in and post and be like, okay, let's add in a woman running across here. Like live streaming, it's just raw.
1:09:19Kalani Ghost Hunter:It's real and raw, yeah. And it validates the authenticity of what you do because there will be streams where nothing really happens. So when something does happen. It's more special. Yeah, for sure. And we're back. Streaming on Peacock. May I present to you the award-winning staff of the Toledo Truth Teller. Slap me. Let's draw something loose. Ay, yes! I like that. The Certified Fresh Series returns.

1:10:30Kalani Ghost Hunter:When the going gets tough, get after it with NOS Energy. Keep your foot flat to the floor and never let off. thunder from top gear to no fear never back down never slow down your body is machined with 800 horses coursing through its veins so go hard go fast go on grab a can of nos energy and get after it okay before we move on from ghosts we need one final thing from you kalani if you don't mind we're going to do another um ghost hunt this october yeah for halloween can you recommend somewhere in the uk that you've been that you did find the most terrifying
1:11:10Jaack Maate:i think one of my favorite places oh the night we went we didn't have a ton happen but it's the ancient ram in i've heard of it is that wales uh wooten under edge west west england west towards
1:11:24Kalani Ghost Hunter:ancient ram in this is like the big gloucestershire yeah it's right just yeah that's yeah i've heard of it. You can stay there, can't you?
1:11:32Jaack Maate:Yeah, you can rent it out for a night. It'll just be you two running around.
1:11:35Kalani Ghost Hunter:And do people show you around? Is that one where they show you?
1:11:37Jaack Maate:You can, depending on who you book it through, you can get like a tour of it and then they'll just like leave you to your vices.
1:11:43Kalani Ghost Hunter:Oh, so it's not like a hotel where people are operating in there?
1:11:46Jaack Maate:No, it'll just be you two. And there's supposed to be like some sex demons and some other crazy stuff.
1:11:52Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah, let's go. I like a sex demon, yeah. What's a sex demon? Only one way to find out. we laughed and we go yeah that's good what makes a demon you can do the research on that one the
1:12:05Jaack Maate:guy that used to have it was an interesting cat and he's been on a few shows and i wish i could
1:12:10Kalani Ghost Hunter:have met him yeah i think he's dead now there is kikora there is kikora no the uh the guy that
1:12:15Jaack Maate:owned the house oh right or the pub right um he was an interesting character so if you can find something on him you'll you'll enjoy that did you feel scared when you're in there i don't feel scared anywhere no no and like people here like the funny thing here is like i think one the biggest difference is is like what's what's considered dangerous in the u.s and dangerous in the uk are vastly different yeah so like people be like oh mate i wouldn't go there that's a dodgy place and i'm running around i'm like where i'm like have you been the parts of the u.s at night well what's the most dangerous part of the u.s you've been um i want to preface this by saying there's good parts in all these places.
1:12:54Jaack Maate:It's not all bad. But there are areas that you'll avoid. So like Memphis, where I live in Tennessee, has a notorious reputation of being a super high murder capital. A lot of shootings, a lot of gang-related stuff in Memphis.
1:13:08Kalani Ghost Hunter:I would have assumed Memphis, like the song.
1:13:12Jaack Maate:Yeah, that's how I picked Memphis. That is Memphis. But that's the crazy part is there's different areas of Memphis, like really nice parts. And that's what I don't think people understand is like Chicago. Chicago gets a really bad rap, but Chicago has beautiful parts with some great food. It's just you can't go to certain areas. Right. Or you shouldn't go to certain areas.
1:13:29Kalani Ghost Hunter:I guess anywhere you go in the world's like that. Like Norwich has some rough areas compared to what you'd naturally go and see.
1:13:35Jaack Maate:I know, but... I think that the danger is different. Yeah. Because it's like, obviously, danger can exist anywhere. Yeah. But I think at home, it's a little different. You've got guns, we've got foxes. You've got foxes and, you know, the occasional knife. Yeah. But it's not like home. So people are like, oh, mate, that place is dodgy. And I'm like, eh, it's all right. And luckily, like most of the time, if I do meet a sketchy character, usually, and it's always the funniest thing, it's like a guy that I'm like keeping my eye on. I'm like, eh, I'm going to go on the other side of the street. They'll run up to me like, oh, I love your video.
1:14:11Jaack Maate:Like, there's this one guy. I'm not even shitting you. I think I was in Bath. This dude was definitely a drug dealer. Definitely a drug dealer. He was in the middle of a run. He had a flip phone and he had an iPhone. So the flip phone was his burner. Yeah. And he was on the middle of a transit. Yeah. He's delivering it to somebody. He goes, oh, mate, hang on. Fucking, I got this American TikToker here. I'm going to talk to him real quick. Shuts his phone. And like, I was like, all right, how are you doing, my guy? Like, I was like, he's like giving me food recommendations. And, but I think that's what I really love about what I do.
1:14:42Jaack Maate:Yeah. Is you could be the worst person in the world. You could be the biggest criminal. You could be whatever. Yeah. And you're still going to eat food. everyone's got to eat yeah everyone's got to eat yeah we had a we had a weird conversation about
1:14:55Kalani Ghost Hunter:that at some point didn't we we were saying like how funny is it that there's like these proper hard men out there like you'd be terrified of but they'll have an ice cream sometimes and that's the funniest thing to me yeah like a scary man yeah licking an ice cream licking an ice cream yeah i always say the same thing you see these road men in london they're like like proper g's they will get in a nice bath at some point they will go to bed and be cozy
1:15:18Jaack Maate:I think the one thing that I love is just the people aspect. Because it's like for me, I genuinely go everywhere. I try and be respectful. I try and give everything a fair shake. Yeah. And people appreciate that. Like I think that's one thing that I've really learned is like even the roughest of folks, if they feel that you're being respectful to whatever they think they stand for or whatever they do stand for, they're really nice. Yeah. Not to say that I won't run into somebody that doesn't like me one day.
1:15:45Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah.
1:15:45Jaack Maate:but it's usually always just super positive whether it's people that i'd run from on a given circumstance because i think i'm gonna get shanked yeah but it's always like i love your videos thank you for coming to this place no one ever comes here yeah thank you yeah that's what
1:16:00Kalani Ghost Hunter:drew me to to your content originally the fact that you were coming to niche places like chroma yeah chroma chroma crab i've never seen any american in chroma ever and then we see that video let's let's talk about your your main thing now then the the food content that we've touched on there your first food review from what i could see was 2023 full english is that correct uh no
1:16:20Jaack Maate:the first one i ever did was in crawley okay and i think it was january of it might have been 2023 okay um but i didn't plan on doing food content i was here to film ghost hunting content yeah and i made that video and it just boomed what was it what you were reviewing a sunday roast at a farmhouse good start yeah because my wife had been watching all these videos because like My entire life I heard that British food was shit, and that's just what we're told. Yeah. Part of that I think stems from World War II. When people are over here on rations, that's the word they take back home and it just sticks.
1:16:53Jaack Maate:Yeah, spam and stuff. And spam's big in Hawaii. Like my dad's Hawaiian. Spam is huge in Hawaii from World War II. Right. So like they'll put spam on anything. Like the best way to eat spam, I used to take these to school, is you'll get white rice, sticky rice, put nori or seaweed around it, and just put a piece of spam in it. Spam sushi? Spam musubi. Wow. It's incredible. You just put a little soy sauce on it. Yeah. It's a great, like, peanut butter and jelly. Just like a quick snack. You can take it anywhere. Yeah. So that's a great way to eat Spam. Just fry it up and throw it in there. That sounds good.
1:17:25Jaack Maate:Anyways, so back to the food thing. So I came over here. I wasn't intending on doing any food content because I was a ghost hunter. Yeah. But my wife was on and on about, you know, trying a Sunday roast because she watched this girl that plated it up every week and ate it. She's like, I want to try one because they look good. Yeah. I was like, yeah, I'm fat. I love food. We'll try it. And that's one thing I've always done is I've loved different cultures, different food, and experiencing different things.
1:17:47Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah, I love that about you, how you just get involved and you just eat anything. I'm a little bitch, as Stevie said at the top of the show. I'm like, oh, has that got salmon in it? I can't eat it. So I wish I could be more like you in that aspect.
1:17:58Jaack Maate:Yeah, I mean, my rule is I have to try something once. Okay. And if I don't like it, then sometimes I'll give it a second chance, but I have to try everything once.
1:18:07Kalani Ghost Hunter:Rule for life or just food?
1:18:09Jaack Maate:Anything but butt stuff. Heroin? Probably wouldn't do that. Now, my brother was a drug addict for a long time, so I'll take his advice on it. Right, okay. What's the saying from Tommy Boy? I could get a good look at a T-bone by sticking my head up a bull's ass, but I'd rather take a butcher's word for it. I've never heard that before. Makes sense, though. Yeah, yeah. That's the line. So I'm like, you know, I don't plan on doing heroin, but I've got a great guy at home that can tell me about it.
1:18:35Kalani Ghost Hunter:You've got sex demons that can tell you about butt stuff. Yeah. So we're fine. Yeah, it's not about what you know, it's who you know. That's it. I can live through somebody else's experience. Yeah, right, right, right. So Sunday roast, that was your first thing?
1:18:46Jaack Maate:That was my first one. What's your opinion on it? That's one of my favorite meals, genuinely. Because I feel like it reminds me of Thanksgiving at home, but it's every Sunday. And it's like at home, if I wanted to get a Sunday roast, you're not going to find places in the U.S. that are serving that up on Sunday. No. And I've tried a couple of them that try to be like British places, and they're always shit. And I think that's another thing that Americans, they might have a British restaurant by them and they're few and far between but they might go try it and they're like this is shit and I'm like because that's the shit version of it but they may never have the capacity to travel and that's their only experience they have with British food can you get a Sunday roast in America?
1:19:25Jaack Maate:no
1:19:26Kalani Ghost Hunter:do you find when we try to do the American stuff like the barbecue stuff are we doing a really bad version of that to you?
1:19:32Jaack Maate:there's been a few that have surprised me that have been pretty good some are shit
1:19:37Kalani Ghost Hunter:Well, my favorite food in the world is American barbecue. Yeah. Like brisket.
1:19:42Jaack Maate:Good barbecue is great. Bad barbecue is really bad. Right. Where would we go in the UK for good American barbecue? There's a place in Manchester called the Barbecue Bus. Okay. Or it's like right outside of Manchester. That one's pretty good. Right. Is that a food truck rather than a restaurant? No, he like parked an entire bus inside of this restaurant. It's actually a really cool spot. That is cool. Yeah. There's one that I want to go try called Texas Taff. It's a guy that's like making it in his garden in Wales. I'll probably do that one soon. I just haven't had my schedule lined up. There's one up in Newcastle.
1:20:17Jaack Maate:The brisket was really nice. I can't think of his name. I tried it the other day, but that one was pretty good. I think I've had a lot more bad barbecue spots than good ones. Right. But one thing that I've really learned with my content is I like to keep everything positive. so if I don't like somewhere for whatever reason instead of just making a big video about it I just don't post it oh really how often would you say you film the content that's super upload um say probably on average there's like at least one or two a week have you had a moment where
1:20:49Kalani Ghost Hunter:you've gone into a restaurant the owner has seen you and gone oh this is exciting and then you've not posted it and they must be like oh he never uploaded yeah oh you're a super honest guy then because you just won't, even if the owner charms you, you fall in love with them a bit.
1:21:03Jaack Maate:Yeah, but the thing is, I won't lie in the video. No. So like if I'm filming the video, even if the owner was spectacular, the service was 10 out of 10, I'll be like, that part was great, but this food was shit.
1:21:13Kalani Ghost Hunter:Would you tell the owner before you leave? No. No. Yeah.
1:21:16Jaack Maate:Because here's my place. I'm not a professional food critic. Yeah. I've never been given that training, nor do I claim to be a professional food critic. Yeah. I can cook food really well at home, and I love eating food, and I've had food from a lot of different places. So like, I guess that could be my experience, but everyone eats, everyone eats every day. Like if that's the basis of expertise,
1:21:34Kalani Ghost Hunter:then we all are experts. But it's a personal opinion. And I guess if you're just wanting to show places you like, there's no need to show the negative side. Well, I always, I live by this thing now.
1:21:46Jaack Maate:Honey attracts a lot more flies than shit.
1:21:50Kalani Ghost Hunter:Okay.
1:21:51Jaack Maate:And I try and apply that to every part of my life. Right. Right. So like I could be negative. I could, I, and I've posted bad ones in the past, but that's just kind of like my new thing is like, because certain ones have gone ways I didn't want them to go. I was like, you know what? I don't want to make this content because I want to help somebody. And if I don't post it, that's helping them because they're not getting all the negative attention that I would be bringing.
1:22:15Kalani Ghost Hunter:That's a very noble thing to do because often as well, especially online drama. Sales, drama sales.
1:22:20Jaack Maate:And like, I know I could get a lot more views if I'm like, you know, I went and told the owner his food was shit, this, that, the other. Sure. But I feel like it's like, for me, it's like dirty views. Yeah.
1:22:29Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah.
1:22:29Jaack Maate:That's what I call it. It's dirty views. Cause it's like, I do well enough being positive. I might get a couple more if I'm negative every now and then. But I think if people are like, okay, I can know that he's telling me a place is good because he believes it's good. Yeah. But I never see him post anything bad. Not because I don't have those experiences. It's just cause I don't want to post it.
1:22:47Kalani Ghost Hunter:It's good you cleared that up. Cause I did. I remember thinking everything's positive. Does he just love everything? Yeah. Yeah, but you do, in fact, hate.
1:22:54Jaack Maate:There are some certain circumstances where it's like something's not cooked right or it's like this is just really bad. And that's the tough gig is it's like being honest sometimes is hard.
1:23:05Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah. But it's worth it. Are there any, not a business or anything like that, but are there any specific British foods that you hate?
1:23:15Jaack Maate:This is very specific, but it's the jelly part of a jellied eel. Okay, yeah. The eel doesn't bother me because I've had eel on so many different things. I'm fine with the eel. It's just the clear jelly. I'm looking at it, the texture, the taste is fish. That's not my favorite. But honestly, that might be like the only thing that I'm like. I don't think many British people even eat. It's a very East London thing. Yeah. It's very specific.
1:23:42Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah. I'm a West Ham fan, East London. So that's our heritage.
1:23:47Jaack Maate:No, I do like pie mash and liquor.
1:23:48Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah. Okay.
1:23:49Jaack Maate:I prefer gravy to liquor sauce, but I don't mind liquor.
1:23:52Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah, that's parsley. Yeah. I've never had it. No? You've eaten more British things than I have, probably.
1:23:58Jaack Maate:This is probably true. I get a lot of those comments, to be fair. Yeah.
1:24:01Kalani Ghost Hunter:Because you don't really get it. Like, that's another London thing. It's a regional thing. We don't get that in Norwich. No.
1:24:06Jaack Maate:No.
1:24:07Kalani Ghost Hunter:We don't really have anything. We've got Coleman's mustard.
1:24:09Jaack Maate:Yeah. You've got Kromer crab. Yeah. Have you tried Coleman's mustard? I do. I love. It's strong, isn't it? It is strong. I feel like when people are like, they don't use any spice. And I'm like, fucking mustard. Just try that mustard. Yeah, American mustard's so weak, isn't it? Compared to that, yeah, it tastes like water. There's literally no flavor to it. And then you go try that one, and it's like you just stuck a whole gob of horseradish in it.
1:24:33Kalani Ghost Hunter:Well, what are three things that you would take back, British foods that you take back to the U.S. when you go?
1:24:38Jaack Maate:Foods or condiments? Either or, whatever you want to say. A good chippy. Yeah. Because I feel like at home, because of how massive the U.S. is, it's really hard to get fresh fish. I mean, if you're not by an ocean, it's coming from 10, 12 hours away. Yeah, right. It's hard to keep that fresh. Yeah. So I wish I could have like a fresh chippy. Yeah. That was properly fried. Right. And not the shit I get at home. Yeah. Sunday roast is the other one. Can't beat a good roast. And then I think the other thing that I love here is not all of your pies are sweet. Okay. You can get a savory pie here. Yeah.
1:25:10Jaack Maate:It's not nearly as common at home. Like you'll have like a chicken pot pie at home or like a cottage pie. but outside of that or a shepherd's pie but outside of that you won't really find savory pies
1:25:21Kalani Ghost Hunter:i do love a fucking pie i really do love a pie yeah you like a bake as well is yeah you you're
1:25:27Jaack Maate:a fan of greg's right yeah i like greg's yeah it's not my favorite like sausage roll but if i'm on the road and i i know what to expect yeah it's just greg's yeah so so out of all these this is
1:25:38Kalani Ghost Hunter:a bit of a messy question but like because they're not all going to be the same but out of like the the Wetherspoons, the Greggs, all the typical British establishments. What's your, when you come back, you know, you have to go. When we go to America, we really like Raising Cane's chicken. Okay. Love it. So we have to go there. Fair enough. And you laugh at that because is it bad or?
1:25:56Jaack Maate:Their chicken's kind of bland.
1:25:57Kalani Ghost Hunter:The sauce carries everything at Raising Cane's. The sauce is banging. Yeah. I find my issue with the American places that you get everywhere, like In-N-Out.
1:26:08Jaack Maate:Yeah.
1:26:08Kalani Ghost Hunter:It's just pure oil. I can't do In-N-Out.
1:26:11Jaack Maate:In-N-Out's great at like 2 o 'clock in the morning. Yeah. Wendy's was okay. But like - We've now got Wendy's over here. This is my complaint is there's so many Americans that will go to like Chili's and post the Triple Dipper, which it looks incredible on camera. So Brits are like, I want to go to the US and try Wingstop, Raisin Cane's, Zaxby's. I'm like, these are all fucking fast food joints.
1:26:32Kalani Ghost Hunter:Right.
1:26:32Jaack Maate:This is all fast food. All you want to eat is fast food. And then they go over there and that's all they eat. They're like, all I ate in America was fast food. That's all you went to.
1:26:41Kalani Ghost Hunter:how do the fast food places that we do that you also do compare five guys is the closest okay like
1:26:49Jaack Maate:that's like a one for one like if i really want to taste something that tastes like home i'll go
1:26:52Kalani Ghost Hunter:to five guys oh wow is there are there any fast food restaurants we do that we do better than
1:26:58Jaack Maate:i think kfc is better here because your chicken's a little bit better okay um taco bell here is worse yeah the taco bell here is like sweet flavored instead of like the spicy that you're used to at home yeah which i don't even really eat those places at home yeah people are like what do you think about a triple dipper i think it's a bunch of frozen food that's fried thrown on your plate it's like spoons quality food but you're paying like 20 bucks for it yeah yeah yeah what is the best american fast food place texas roadhouse oh we've never been right where was that place we went fast food's a really loose term it's a sit-down restaurant yeah but like in terms of like it's a chain and you can find it everywhere yeah i love texas roadhouse because It's just a steak and it's great.
1:27:41Kalani Ghost Hunter:We went to a really good, well, we thought it was really good, meat place, like a barbecue meat place. That's Vegas barbecue. Vegas. But we had to get like a Uber out away from the strip to find it. Have you been many places in Vegas?
1:27:54Jaack Maate:I've been around Vegas, but I'll be honest with you. I mean, five years ago I was living out of my car. So like me going to a city was eating a$2 cheese and beans burrito from Taco Bell.
1:28:05Kalani Ghost Hunter:Right.
1:28:06Jaack Maate:Yeah. I've been to 49 states out of 50. Oh, wow. Which one's still? Oregon is the only one I haven't been to. Any reason? I was supposed to go and then COVID hit and then I just haven't really had a reason to go back. 49 out of 50? You're well-traveled. Yeah. Well, and I think that's one thing that people here don't get is like Americans are not well-traveled. Yeah. Trying to make it around the U.S., just the U.S., people will take a lifetime doing that.
1:28:30Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah.
1:28:31Jaack Maate:That's not even leaving the country, which is not beneficial to gaining that experience you gain from traveling. Yeah. Of course. But people don't realize how expensive it is to get out of the U.S. and they just don't realize how vast the U.S. is. There's a lot of people that are like, well, before I want to go to another country, I want to see all of my own country, which I feel like is the opposite here. You guys won't go anywhere in the U.K., but you'll be like, oh, mate, let's go down to Benidorm for the 50th time this week.
1:28:55Kalani Ghost Hunter:How many places in the U.K. do you think you've visited?
1:29:00Jaack Maate:Oh, shit. That's a lot. I mean, pretty much any major city I've been to. I've been to so many random little villages. I haven't been everywhere.
1:29:08Kalani Ghost Hunter:Top three UK cities. Not necessarily based on food, just as a place. This will be a good clip.
1:29:13Jaack Maate:I love Newcastle.
1:29:15Kalani Ghost Hunter:Okay, yeah.
1:29:16Jaack Maate:Newcastle reminds me of home. The Geordies. It's very similar to home because obviously the accent's pretty out there. It's a lot different than the accent back home. Can you attempt the accent? Well, I can't really attempt it, but I love the way they say cookie. Like anytime I hear them say cookie, I'm like, say it again. Let me hear it. I love the way they say cookie. They're also just like, you can tell it's colder than shit up there all the time. Yeah. Because like even the girls are just tough. Like they're out there in cocktail dresses. It'll be like the low freezing temps and they're all just, and the moment you put on a coat, they're like, nope, not fucking doing it.
1:29:54Jaack Maate:And then me and my wife went and it was cold outside and she has a jacket on and they're like, you're not from here, are you? I'm like, no, we're not. It was her dress or your hat. It was the jacket. No, the hat blends in. Right. Because any fucking stag do or Hindu, they're all down there with the shit cowboy hat. So the hat is fine. But it was the jacket that tipped him off.
1:30:13Kalani Ghost Hunter:The way you observe UK cities is bang on. Americans, in my humble opinion, can be a bit cringy when they pretend to know. That's the same as we probably are when we try to do. But the way, we're going to get to this in a minute, but you use phrases like quid. You've used a lot of British slang. is that something you consciously do or is it just because you spend enough time there i spend
1:30:35Jaack Maate:enough time here but the other thing is like because i'm doing more countries now so like when i go to the uk i'll go to another country after my goal is to immerse myself as much as possible in the culture that i'm that i'm a part of that yeah because i feel like that's how you really get to see a place for what it is and the one thing that i've learned like even to going to spain if i go to spain and i'll make a food video and i'll post it on my youtube i'll go through the comments and have to translate every single one of them but the humor is the same the way that people communicates the same.
1:31:02Jaack Maate:It's just a language that separates us. And it's like, I think the world is so concentrated on ways to split us all up and put us into different groups and categories. But if we can find the things that are more universal, that all of us indulge in, it's a lot easier to be like, okay, I can kind of see where they're coming from. They're not foreign to me in the capacity of we all eat the same. We love getting drunk. We love having a laugh. Like that transcends anything else and i think if that's what i focus on with my content when i die one day i can look back and be proud that i focus on the things that brought everyone together rather than what separates that's a great message mate a great message newcastle newcastle sorry um cities right not like tiny places oh you can you can the three best places in the uk according to just because i recently went there there's a place called ely yes not too far from us
1:31:56Kalani Ghost Hunter:cathedral you love the cathedral isn't it yeah beautiful yeah but there's a lot of really good
1:32:01Jaack Maate:food in town yeah and for a place that's literally the size of a pin dot it has so much to offer and i think that's the one thing like small town usa and small town uk are a lot different because small town uk you're still relatively close to anything you could ever need whereas small town usa you could be 40 minutes from a grocery store yeah right so i think that to me is the cool part just going to these tiny little places and seeing that. So I'm going to go Ely number two just to give it a mix up. I fucking love that. And then number three.
1:32:27Kalani Ghost Hunter:Say Norwich.
1:32:29Jaack Maate:I love Norwich. I do love Norwich.
1:32:31Kalani Ghost Hunter:Not top three, though. He even pronounces Norwich pretty bang on. I know. Yeah. This is really tough.
1:32:41Jaack Maate:I'm going to have to go somewhere in Wales because I love the Welsh. Okay. The Welsh have been so good to me. The English have and the Scottish have as well. Yeah. Northern Ireland, I'm sorry because I've only spent one day there. I need to go do more. That's the area of the UK. I need to spend more time. Right. Honestly, there's a place I could pick in every country that I'm like, I could live there. You know what I mean? I think for Wales, North Wales is my favorite because it's just a place that kind of drew me in. Like I went rafting there. I went to a castle there. Cool. Which you can do this in a lot of places.
1:33:10Jaack Maate:That's not the reason why I fell in love with it. But the people, it's just like, there's something about the Welsh that they're just so much like, I don't feel like an outsider. and that actually carries over for a lot of places in the UK. I actually think I get treated better in the UK than other Brits in different parts of the UK and what I mean by that is like if a southerner goes up north, you will get a less warm reception than I will get as an American.
1:33:33Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah, the Scots and stuff like that. Oh, there's so much animosity.
1:33:37Jaack Maate:Like in the World Cup, I supported England just because England was the only team left from the UK. Yeah, right. Like I was obviously supporting England, Scotland, the US. The US was out, Scotland was out, so I was like, all right. Yeah. We'll support England. Yeah. And the Scottish got pissed.
1:33:50Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah. They're like, fucking anyone but England.
1:33:52Jaack Maate:You fucked up. You're not allowed back. I will stand at the border and guarantee your ass doesn't come back.
1:33:58Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah, you've got it down. I hate us.
1:34:00Jaack Maate:And that's one thing that I've learned here is you guys hate each other more than anyone could ever hate you. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And the world gives the Brits a lot of shit. Right. Because they go back into the historical stuff. Yeah. We were bastards historically. Yeah. Yeah. But you guys hate each other more than anyone could ever hate you.
1:34:15Kalani Ghost Hunter:We hate ourselves as well. The self-deprecation. We are gross. It's like Norwich and Ipswich. They'll hate each other because they're close. Any rivalry you can have.
1:34:24Jaack Maate:Like I had a guy today tell me that I'm lower class because I call it red sauce and not tomato ketchup. I said, what the fuck are you talking about? It's ketchup. If I called it fucking yum yum sauce, I don't give a shit. It's just ketchup. If you're getting up in arms over that, fucking take a break, put your phone down, and just stay off the internet.
1:34:46Kalani Ghost Hunter:That's bang on. So we go Newcastle, Ely. I need one more. And North Wales.
1:34:50Jaack Maate:I'm going to go North Wales. That's like Conway. Okay. Conway Wells. Right. It's a beautiful place. If you've never been. Never been. It's worth the trip. Okay. It's my favorite sausage rolls also located there. Really? And we have sausage rolls. Yeah, we like sausage rolls. But it's a girthy one. Okay. It's a girthy one and it's packed for it. It's a proper butcher shop. Do you know the name of the... Edwards of Conway. Edwards. I'm going to write that. There's also a really good vanilla slice there at the bakery in Conway. Edwards
1:35:16Kalani Ghost Hunter:You are genuinely well More travelled than We are within the UK I think
1:35:21Jaack Maate:The thing is though I don't Don't feel bad about it Because like I get it When I talk to people And they're like I'm like you know You haven't really seen Much of your own country Like why are you going to Spain For the 50th time But then they're like Well the weather here's shit And when I go on holiday I want to go somewhere Where it's not shit
1:35:36Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah you're paying for I'm like okay
1:35:38Jaack Maate:And not to mention A train Is more expensive Than a flight To fucking Benador
1:35:44Kalani Ghost Hunter:It's mad isn't it
1:35:45Jaack Maate:How can I fly to Spain for cheaper than I can go on a two-hour train? In what world does that make sense?
1:35:52Kalani Ghost Hunter:If our audience don't know you, they're going to fall in love with you because you are saying all the right things.
1:35:56Jaack Maate:Well, I've been here long enough that it's like, granted, I don't live here.
1:35:59Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah.
1:36:00Jaack Maate:I'm not British.
1:36:02Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah.
1:36:02Jaack Maate:I still love things in America. I still say I'm American. Like, I'm not one of those people that's like, oh, fuck America. I hate everything about it. No. Like, I try and find the best bits of everywhere I go. Yeah. but i have heard so many of the same moans over and over again and then i'm in the situation where i'm the one moaning over and over again i get it yeah it's like the weather outside of here recently where it's been sunny every day i was here for a spell where it rained for fucking three weeks straight i'm like this sucks no wonder they're drunk all the time do you find with the
1:36:31Kalani Ghost Hunter:weather that we as much as i say we're not well traveled we have covered quite a lot of yeah the the uk but i have found when we've been first ever time we went to newcastle it was sunny it was lovely and you got that vibe the second time we went to newcastle for the gregs the weather was bad and you instantly see the city differently yeah do you notice sometimes when you go to a place the weather can really affect the day and cloud your view of that place if you go on a rainy
1:36:56Jaack Maate:day you think i'm used to it here yeah i'll just get a rain jacket what's the saying what's the guy the british guy he said you're it's not bad weather you're just not prepared essentially okay
1:37:04Kalani Ghost Hunter:I'm not sure, but...
1:37:05Jaack Maate:There's a guy, somebody will know this, but he essentially said, you're just not prepared for the right weather. Right. It's never bad weather, you're just not prepared. And he was talking about women from Newcastle, basically, with that. Well, no, up there they just drink. Like, if they're cold, you just drink more. Yeah.
1:37:20Kalani Ghost Hunter:You get the warmth from the drink. Well, we're going to test your Britishness. Okay. We've got 12 English slang terms. Okay. We want to see how many can Kalani correctly guess what they mean, or not guess, or tell us what they mean. So, Stevie, hit us with the terms, mate. Taking the piss.
1:37:38Jaack Maate:They get harder. Okay, taking the piss is just like you're joking with somebody. So, like, if somebody is like, oh, mate, are you taking the piss? Like, are you joking with me?
1:37:45Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah, you actually used that. He used that earlier on. Yep, perfect.
1:37:49Jaack Maate:Pissed. That can mean a lot of things. I made a video about this because there's about a million different ways that someone can use pissed here, but most commonly it's when they're drunk. Yep.
1:37:57Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yep.
1:37:58Jaack Maate:Correct.
1:37:58Kalani Ghost Hunter:Two for two.
1:38:00Jaack Maate:Geezer. It's just an old guy or just like a proper lad, like a sound mate.
1:38:04Kalani Ghost Hunter:he's a he's a proper geezer that one yeah yeah because i think a lot of people think it's older people and i think that used to be it used to be but now it's like anyone like oh people come
1:38:13Jaack Maate:like oh mate you're a proper geezer yeah like you could be a geezer yeah yeah even saying he's a
1:38:18Kalani Ghost Hunter:sound geezer at the end you've added another level to it yeah gobsmacked just shocked you're
1:38:24Jaack Maate:just like i'm fucking gobsmacked hang on smashing it minging uh something is just like like shit You're just like, oh, mate, that's minging. Yeah, five for five. Having a mare. Having a mare. Ooh.
1:38:36Kalani Ghost Hunter:Ooh, we might have got him. Can you use it in a sentence for me? So, well, it might give it away. I think that is the sentence. I think you could go, oh, you're having a mare. You are having a mare. You've had a mare. Yeah, it's hard. I'm trying to think if you could say it without giving it away. Oh, he's had a mare there. So you could say, Declan Rice had a mare for England. Oh, so he goofed.
1:38:58Jaack Maate:He fucked up. had a stinker.
1:39:01Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah. Had a terrible time. Yeah.
1:39:02Jaack Maate:If you're... Oh, you had like, something went wrong essentially. Yeah. Exactly. It was out of air.
1:39:07Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah. Your girlfriend catches you like in another girl's Instagram photo. Oh, yeah. Throw a wobbly.
1:39:14Jaack Maate:Throw a wobbly. I told you to get harder. Throw a wobbly.
1:39:24Kalani Ghost Hunter:I don't think this one's said as often.
1:39:25Jaack Maate:It's not as common. Is it just like a shit attempt at something?
1:39:30Kalani Ghost Hunter:no it i'll use it in a sentence um if you tell me that west ham are a bad football team i might throw a throw a wobbly throw a punch it's you might get combative you might get confrontational yeah yeah kind of like a tantrum yeah tantrum i'll throw a wobbly yeah i'll storm off okay oh well i
1:39:49Jaack Maate:took the l on that one we'll take the loss on that one so we're six but the thing is if you could if you say it i usually can figure out what you're trying to yeah yeah leg it oh i know this one i've heard this one like twice and you know what americans have a phrase for this the same phrase
1:40:12Kalani Ghost Hunter:the way i didn't know what it meant okay it's in the film can we get a sentence um fucking hell I think we should leg it we should do it? no it's we should not do it? we should run away you would say book it
1:40:26Jaack Maate:oh book it okay I missed two up the duff where is this from? up the duff yeah like what region is saying this?
1:40:36Kalani Ghost Hunter:I think everywhere you'd say oh she's up the duff she's up the duff specifically she's up the duff
1:40:48Kalani Ghost Hunter:it doesn't mean the same thing as fit right no you go have you seen her i haven't seen her for
1:40:53Jaack Maate:about nine months yes because she's up the duff pregnant yeah there we go pregnant i haven't heard that one to be fair donkey's years oh shit these are hard huh donkey's years all right sentence oh i haven't seen him for donkey's years oh a long time yeah two more on the lash
1:41:14Kalani Ghost Hunter:that's out drinking right yeah beautiful yeah final one this this could be super easy or super hard i think absolute weapon oh that can be a positive or a negative which way you sway him
1:41:27Jaack Maate:more so um so like for example like if you're watching england play yeah and like bellingham in a few matches you'd be like oh mate he's an absolute weapon like in a positive way yeah but most of the time it's negative connotation.
1:41:41Kalani Ghost Hunter:Bang on. That is perfect. Bang on. I would say an absolute weapon is used more positively when talking about an attractive woman. She's an absolute weapon. That's fair.
1:41:49Jaack Maate:I always like when they say, all your birds fit, mate.
1:41:54Kalani Ghost Hunter:With absolute weapon, since you like Newcastle, I think the Geordies use that. Geordie Shore boys would always say that about their own penises. Absolute weapon? Oh, mate, it's an absolute weapon. I've got an absolute weapon. Have you got any American slangs you can test out? I've got a few. Okay.
1:42:09Jaack Maate:Granted, I told you when we walked in, my accent has depleted quite a bit. And if I go back home and around my mom long enough, the twang will come out a little bit. But these are all ones that I would grow up saying.
1:42:19Kalani Ghost Hunter:Okay.
1:42:21Jaack Maate:We're not going to know any. You're too big for your britches.
1:42:24Kalani Ghost Hunter:Is that you're acting a bit above your station? Yeah. Too big for your boots. Yeah, you're too big for your pants.
1:42:30Jaack Maate:You got big pants on, but you're not a big guy.
1:42:32Kalani Ghost Hunter:We say too big for your boots. Okay.
1:42:35Jaack Maate:Full as a tick. Full as a tick. Full as a tick? You know what a tick is, right? Like a little flea?
1:42:41Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah, they like get on. Like you're eating too much?
1:42:44Jaack Maate:You're full.
1:42:45Kalani Ghost Hunter:Oh. Yeah.
1:42:47Jaack Maate:He don't know his ass from a hole in the ground. Idiot. Yeah. Yeah, that's good. He's a bit thick. Yeah. He's a bit thick. He's all hat and no cattle. He's all talk. Yeah. I've not heard these. I've not heard these. He's got a hitch in his giddy up. Oh.
1:43:05Kalani Ghost Hunter:Bad mood? He's got a hitch in his giddy-up.
1:43:09Jaack Maate:Is this a cowboy? I'm looking at Ronnie, and he's got a hitch in his giddy-up. He limps. Could be. There's something not right about him. Yeah, so it could be literally talking about the way he walks. He could have an ailment, or it could be something's off with him. Right. He's got a hitch in his giddy-up.
1:43:24Kalani Ghost Hunter:Okay. How would you use that in a normal day-to-day?
1:43:28Jaack Maate:So if I'm watching a football game, American football, and somebody gets injured, or you can tell someone's injured, you'd be like, oh, he's got a hitch in his giddy-up. that's quite cute i like that uh bless your heart yeah we say that yeah yeah here's the thing it's like pissed in america though oh because not in the way that you're thinking but when someone says oh bless your heart yeah that's a bad thing oh you're taking you're you're more sarcastic you're being like you're a fucking idiot like i'm gonna say this polite because down south it's it's very much like polite good-natured folks very hospital hospitable and if someone's like oh bless your
1:44:04Kalani Ghost Hunter:heart that's like them having pity on you i think we do that a bit i figure but it's not just like
1:44:09Jaack Maate:oh bless your heart yeah it can mean that but it's more so like the negative that's like the biggest like if you talk to like an old southern grandma yeah and she's like oh bless your heart okay we we have a tad but not low yeah not um come hell or high water there's a movie called this
1:44:26Kalani Ghost Hunter:there's a film it was called come hell or hell so i'm gonna do that no matter what i'm gonna do
1:44:31Jaack Maate:yeah yeah that's it it's like come hell or high water that's gonna get done i like it their phrases are a lot cooler um i got one more for you yeah that dog won't hunt that dog won't hunt
1:44:41Kalani Ghost Hunter:yeah um uh doesn't work properly or lazy pretty much like in in the circumstance or the the way
1:44:49Jaack Maate:it's written it's just like oh that dog's not gonna go hunting it's useless so like the way you're doing something won't work so i could say um like like well like i'll give you an example we'll relate it back to football for you guys so when the english manager yeah decided to stop the attack against argentina argentina you would say that dog don't hunt because that scheme did not work i like that you called it football there and it wasn't going to work yeah i'm not even a fan and i was watching this game saying why the fuck are we taking the attack off it's crazy all it's gonna be is messy and somebody else at the very end kicking a ball in yeah you can't hold them off for that long that's bang on i played keeper in middle school or elementary in the middle school yeah because like soccer is not huge at home soccer football um so i have a rough understanding and like i loved keeper because anytime somebody would come in the box i just tackle the shit out of them.
1:45:48Jaack Maate:Sweeper keeper. So, but I understand enough to be like, what the fuck are we doing? Yeah. Why are we putting in all the slow people to try and park the bus?
1:45:59Kalani Ghost Hunter:It's got the phrases down. I like there that you said football when you first brought it up to then talk about the World Cup and then you keep saying we. Yeah. You're one of us. It's lovely. One of us.
1:46:09Jaack Maate:I've been drinking too much of the water.
1:46:11Kalani Ghost Hunter:I'm a citizen ship. Kalani, before we let you go, we have a bag of goodies here which I'm going to pour on the table that's going to sound amazing for the audio listeners all British food, we've got crisps and chocolate and Kalani I want you to have a rummage through them and pick your top three, you can keep whatever you like as well
1:46:30Jaack Maate:there's a lot of good options here talk us through what we got I'm looking at some Walker's crisps some Cadbury did you say crisps like that to avoid saying chips? no I'm pretty well pretty well used to it by now. Because like when I go to a chippy, that's chips.
1:46:47Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah.
1:46:47Jaack Maate:That's always chips to me. Yeah. Toffee crisp is pretty solid. I love a toffee crisp. Turkish delight. I like them fresh, but these are shite. Okay. The first thing I'm picking up, we'll do the order here in a second, is pickled onion monster munch. It's one of my favorites.
1:47:01Kalani Ghost Hunter:Brilliant. Yeah.
1:47:02Jaack Maate:I feel like you can't come here and not try that. Quavers, I love the texture. What do we got here? A fries chocolate cream. Have you had those? I've had it, yeah. Yeah. Terry's Chocolate Orange. Those are nice, but these are all over Europe, so we won't...
1:47:16Kalani Ghost Hunter:Oh, Kinder Bueno's all over Europe. Oh, fair enough.
1:47:19Jaack Maate:Maltesers are solid. Yeah. Dame Bar is also solid, but I think that's from Sweden? I'd be wrong. I just picked up loads of stuff. It's okay.
1:47:28Kalani Ghost Hunter:Just giving you a little insight. Okay.
1:47:30Jaack Maate:The second crisp I'm picking up is Prawn Cocktail.
1:47:32Kalani Ghost Hunter:Oh, they're my first one of my favorite flavors.
1:47:34Jaack Maate:But my favorite Prawn Cocktail is the Max Ridges ones.
1:47:38Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah.
1:47:38Jaack Maate:You love a Rage Crisp, don't you?
1:47:39Kalani Ghost Hunter:I love a Rage Crisp, yeah.
1:47:40Jaack Maate:holds the flavor. It's that one because they put so much on there. When I have prawn cocktail, I want prawn cocktail. I don't want it to be mild. Like, I don't care if you're hand cooking. I don't give a shit what's cooking it. If it doesn't have the flavor, I don't want it. I guess we'll do one thing that's not a crisp, but if I were to pick another crisp, it'd probably be...
1:47:57Kalani Ghost Hunter:Or how about if we would do another crisp and then we'll do your top three chocolates? Okay, so,
1:48:01Jaack Maate:I'm going to put an asterisk next to this one. Okay, next to salt and vinegar. Because my favorite is the co-op salt and vinegar. Yeah, yeah. And then my second favorite it's the M &S salt and vinegar. Yeah, you love that strong. But I do like a disco as well.
1:48:13Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yes. Discos are great.
1:48:14Jaack Maate:Yeah. But I feel like the texture of the co-op one's better for me. Okay. It's more classic crisp rather than like the disco. It's kind of like pringily. Okay, yeah, yeah. But I do like a disco. I like the things that I feel like my mouth is hurting after a couple times.
1:48:28Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah, it eats you back in a way, doesn't it?
1:48:30Jaack Maate:So I think out of these three, I'm going to go Monster Munch 1, Prawn Cocktail 2, Salt and Vinegar 3.
1:48:34Kalani Ghost Hunter:Perfect. Perfect. Just real quick, your top three chocolates from the list. chocolates
1:48:39Jaack Maate:we'll say sweets we gotta go with a Freddo that's classic this is also the way that British people measure inflation they're getting pricey so if you're going and a Freddo's a quid or more you're like this place is fucked get the fuck out of here turn around and leave because they have fucked the Freddo so we'll go with a Freddo because it's more than just chocolate second Second, here, ooh, milky bar's nice. Do you like a bounty? It's quite controversial. I like coconut stuff. Yeah. So bounty doesn't bother me too much. I do like the texture of a twirl as well. But I like when you put in the Mr.
1:49:22Jaack Maate:Whippy. Oh, flake. Flake. I love a flake. Oh, yeah. Flake is one of my favorites. Okay, I'm going to go, ooh, arrow peppermint. Yeah, okay. Because I like arrow. I like the inside being all bubbly. Oh, those are really nice too. Frazzles. Yeah, they're banging. Those are really good. A little cleaver design, man. The old ads for this used to crack me up.
1:49:46Kalani Ghost Hunter:How do you even know about the old advert?
1:49:48Jaack Maate:So the old adverts for this would be very controversial today because it was all essentially positioned for men. Which I never understood. Not for girls was the cat. No, it's just like, what? You're trying to,
1:49:57Kalani Ghost Hunter:but you're also getting rid of half your demographic.
1:49:59Jaack Maate:Yeah, your audience, your customer base. My favorite old adverts are probably Iron Brew or Tango. When the orange guy would run around and slap the guy in the back of the head, you just got tangoed. How do you know about old British adverts? I've done a lot of research. Yeah, you know your shit, mate. Because here's the thing. If I'm going to be like the person that people are like, that's the American I want representing me, I've got to know my shit.
1:50:18Kalani Ghost Hunter:You're doing a great job.
1:50:20Jaack Maate:So I don't know everything. I will not claim to know everything.
1:50:22Kalani Ghost Hunter:But you can still learn. This is the journey.
1:50:24Jaack Maate:Every day is a learning experience. I learn something new every day.
1:50:26Kalani Ghost Hunter:Our listeners should trust your opinion on British stuff more than they trust us.
1:50:31Jaack Maate:I'm going to go... If this was the actual orange, I'd go with Terry's Chocolate Orange. But I'm going to go Maltesers. Maltesers. I love Maltesers.
1:50:40Kalani Ghost Hunter:So your top three chocolates from three to one.
1:50:44Jaack Maate:Maltesers, Aero, Freddo.
1:50:46Kalani Ghost Hunter:Love it. And then the crisps, three to one.
1:50:48Jaack Maate:We're going to go salt and vinegar, prawn cocktail, and pickled onion monster month.
1:50:53Kalani Ghost Hunter:Beautiful. Kalani, you've been a great guest, mate. Thank you so much for coming on. Thank you for having me. Keep doing your content. Absolutely love it. my final thing before we hit you with our parting question. I don't know this about you. Do you have a football team, an English football team? I don't, but it's on purpose.
1:51:10Jaack Maate:Why? Because I didn't grow up watching. And I feel like any team that I subscribe to at this point, there's going to be accusations of why I'm subscribed to them. There's no way I can convince you to support my team. I can't. I think that's actually worse than declaring your political party. Does it help that - Saying what football team you support is worse than declaring your political party.
1:51:34Kalani Ghost Hunter:Do you think it will alienate the audience?
1:51:36Jaack Maate:I just don't want to take shit from people I don't have to take shit from. So if I gave you a West Ham shirt, you wouldn't put it on? If I go to a match and they're the home team, I'll support them. But that's my rule. I'm not invested to a point. Because if I go support a really good team, they're like, oh, you're a glory hunter. No, I just don't like the color of the jersey or the kit. But at this point, it's like, why? I don't need to.
1:51:59Kalani Ghost Hunter:Does it help that West Ham aren't a really good team?
1:52:01Jaack Maate:Yeah, but then they'll be like, why would you support West Ham? They're shit. That's the comment I would get. We're not even in the Premier League anymore. I would know the comments that I'm going to get. So at this point, I'm just like, I'll support the home team.
1:52:12Kalani Ghost Hunter:Off camera, I'll convince you. I'll bribe you. And then deep down, you can be a West Ham fan.
1:52:16Jaack Maate:Because I went and bought the England kit of the World Cup. Because I was like, oh, shit, if I'm going to support the team, I'm going to support the team. But if you were like England versus USA, I'm like, I'm American. Yeah. USA. say but i can support other people like and people are like oh fucking hell that's like wearing a half and half scarf i'm like it's not a 50 50 scarf because i'm not wearing a 50 50 scarf i don't have a fucking team so when i go somewhere i'll just support the home team i'll tell you where that got a little crazy was when wrexham played uh fuck millwall all right yeah well
1:52:47Kalani Ghost Hunter:you millwall folks are crazy well west ham that's west ham my team and millwall arch enemies yeah
1:52:55Jaack Maate:I'm not going to say anything bad about them because I don't have anything bad to say. That was wild. I'm watching people just fist fight. Yeah. And the game hadn't even started.
1:53:03Kalani Ghost Hunter:Yeah. They're just fighting to fight. That's Millwall in a nutshell. They tend to do that. But this year, because West Ham have been relegated down to the championship where Millwall are, it's the first time they're going to meet in about 16 years.
1:53:13Jaack Maate:How many police are going to be there? There's going to be loads.
1:53:14Kalani Ghost Hunter:If you can be in the UK for that, go and have a little look. Who? Millwall of South London, West Ham East London.
1:53:20Jaack Maate:Well, so this is the funniest thing, and I've never said this, but the day I was in Wrexham to watch that match at Wrexham Millwall sent me a message said if you would like to come watch a match please come down to Millwall we'd love to have you did you go? I haven't been did you reply to say I don't know if I replied or not because my wife is the one that handles all my emails fuck em I won't say that I'll support any home team that I go but I thought it was funny that they're like okay well they're playing us today so come watch a game at our place and I'm like clever marketing. West Ham. Clever marketing.
1:53:57Kalani Ghost Hunter:That's Paolo Ducanu up there who is, he's God. Is he? He is God. Yeah. He's got some questionable political views, but we leave that at the door and we just appreciate it. Well, you're not watching football for politics. This is it. This is it. Testament to you, my friend, because we've overrun massively. A lot of our interviews are about an hour. This one's two. You may know him as Kalani Ghost Hunter or KGH. We now know him as the coolest American ever. Kalani is on the show to chat the strangest things that have happened to him during a ghost hunt, his tier list of favourite UK crisps and chocolate bars, and the many differences between UK and US culture. But to be completely honest, it's mainly Jaack flirting with him for 2 hours...
There’s also a lightbulb Wetherspoons moment during this podcast in which the next JaackAndStevie episode is spawned…
