In short

Angie Martinez IRL’s Oscars recap focused on “takes a village,” spotlighting behind-the-camera winners and the personal love/realness of Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan.

Guest backgrounds

No guests appear in the episode. Hosts discuss Teyana Taylor (former music artist turned filmmaker; 2023 IRL interview; nominated at the Oscars that night) and Autumn (won Best Cinematography; first woman to win in that category). They also reference Ryan Coogler (filmmaker; USC; wrote/produced) and his wife Zinzi (producer; worked pregnant/postpartum). Michael B. Jordan is discussed as a longtime actor (The Wire; Creed; Black Panther; Fruitvale Station).

Key claims

The most emotional Oscars moments were for casting, wardrobe, cinematography, and other crafts—not just acting. Coogler’s wife’s role is essential and should not be framed as “a favor.” Jordan’s speech and family remarks were especially heartfelt.

Notable examples

Autumn’s win prompting women in the room to stand; wardrobe win for Frankenstein; Jordan’s In-N-Out Burger moment after the awards; Coogler’s story about his wife reframing conflict as caring for each other.

3:06Hey guys, today's Oscar recap is brought to you by Boost Mobile. What's happening, everybody? This is a special episode. One of our IRL weeklies. A little bit different today because we are talking about the Oscars last night. There are so many important moments to discuss and even to discuss where IRL is connected. Like, we feel very strongly on this podcast about a couple of people that were having an amazing moment last night at the Oscars. So we shall discuss. Do you remember, actually, when we interviewed Tiana Taylor Beck in 2023? You know, that was her, I think, one of her first, like her kind of like her acting debut in a way for 1001, which is a great film.

3:46but you know in our trailer how you introduce her is actually you say future academy award-winning tionda taylor yo i'm putting that out there i'm really like you know i mean manifesting things for people it happens there's a clip of back back in the day of me talking about people having babies together it's like it happened like three times i was like you guys gonna have a baby and then they had a baby it was like three times i put that on somebody and it happened um so yeah she didn't win the oscar but she did get the nomination and she got all the glory of that moment and and there was just so much you could just tell she's like prancing around in these amazing outfits in her glory like she's i don't know she's just in the space that she's worked so hard to be and i think winning the award sure is nice but i think it's beyond winning the award it's just like filling up and being in the space that you're supposed to be in life i feel like she's arrived in that space with or without an Oscar.

4:42She's arrived in the space that she's worked so hard to be. You could totally tell how happy. I mean, I don't think there was anyone more happy just to be at the Oscars than Tiana Taylor was. You know, her category came really early on in the Oscars last night. And when she when she lost to Amy for Weapons, that girl, the camera pants on her. I used to see Tiana jumping on my up and down. Oh my God. You thought, you thought for a second, like, did Tiana just win? That's her way of showing. Like, she's just, that's to me, that's exactly what I'm saying. It's like, she's just happy to be in this moment.

5:18She's happy to be sitting next to Leo happy to be in this class, happy to be making art that I'm sure she's super proud of. And, you know, sitting next to her mom who's been on this journey with her her whole life. I mean, she gave her her journey. Right. But like, I don't know, just the whole thing, seeing Michael B. Jordan there with his mom, there was a lot of love and maybe it's just us maybe we're biased a little bit but like i just felt like it just felt like a lot of love was present yesterday watching michael b jordan win that award sitting next to his mother he's been a working actor since he's a kid and the fact that he said i could feel everybody's wanting me to do well like i felt that deep like because i feel that sometimes like sometimes we'll do something and i'll meet people they'll be like yo or even with the pod they'd be like i love the pod so much and i could feel that they wanted to do well that they want me to do well and that's such a great feeling i can only imagine for him with like more than half the world rooting for him to have this moment what that must feel like and then he wins it and he's sitting next to his mom and then he goes to n &l burger after which was so we didn't love him enough like this the whole thing was just really nice to see um so it was a special moment but one of the things i wanted to talk about and we are going to play some clips uh to refer to some of these episodes that we're talking about but one of the things that i loved seeing last night was um you know there's a new category category for casting director um there is watching the cinematographer for the woman who won for sinners yeah autumn watching her win you know it it really and a lot of people in their speeches refer to like filmmaking it's not the star it's not just michael b jordan like michael b jordan yes he won an oscar that's amazing god bless him but if if ryan didn't write that script if his wife didn't produce it with him if that cinematographer didn't make it look the way it looked like it really is and it really takes a village is what i'm saying and to see some of those people in the village be acknowledged that to me last night was super dope i love seeing that i love seeing the people that you know make the village and so there's a lot of that going on last night and totally and by the way congratulations to ryan because he did win for best screenplay he didn't win the director award but he will at some point it's a marty scorsese i don't know how many films before he got one ryan's gonna get one but i was glad that he won screenplay and and then some of the post interviews man the way he talks about his wife can we just before I get into what I have to say about that do we have any clip from his episode that refers to that at all yes I got an amazing wife who's been with me knowing me a long time and is always very honest with me is very smart so I keep her around and let her in on everything I'm doing you know so she can kind of give me perspective when i'm drowning in stress she can tell me yeah you should be worried or not you're tripping you know i'm saying lots to love about that clip number one as a also a fellow workaholic i understand the concept behind that i loved hearing that from him but over just the way that he respects and honors his wife and even when people try to give him credit for that that you know sometimes i hate to see this but like sometimes people be like oh it's so nice the way you talk about your wife like if he's doing her a favor you know what i'm saying like oh it's nice you let your wife produce the movie and people don't say that but there is a tone sometimes that people say something that makes i don't know it like diminishes her importance and he is always the first one to check that he's like oh it's not a favor oh no i'm grateful to have her be part of this film oh this film doesn't happen without her you know i love the way he checks people in terms of the tone in which people refer to his wife.

9:18I'll tell y 'all a quick story about Zanzi and y 'all should just know man that this movie you know big credit to her and Seb our partner man but it wouldn't be what it was without her man and she did it all pregnant and postpartum most of it like

9:38like I've seen her she was she was in every she was in every post-production meeting man like like like like holding it down and dealing with all types of stuff you know um the only i could see we took the film on the road all over the world while she was out there here y 'all sorry man i wasn't easy and then we and it hasn't stopped you know i mean all it is since you know our little baby is seven months old now and she and she and as good as a producer she is she even better mom so so to see or do all of this is crazy but but but i'm gonna i'm gonna just i'm gonna just leave y 'all with one insight into her brilliance man like like we were dealing with some stuff at home and and two family members were kind of at each other's throats about about about some things um and i and i did what i did i vented for like 40 minutes to her about you know who did what and why why we got to do this to support who and and and she took a deep breath when i got done vending and her and her crazy, zingy way.

10:38And she says, you know, sometimes it doesn't matter who's right. What matters is that people know that the other person cares about them. And I had, you know, I'm a writer. I heard a lot of words. I listen to my words all the time. I lived with this woman for a long time, and I never heard those words put together like that in that context. And I was like, God damn, man, you one of one. um and i and i and i felt like one-on-one for bagging her you know you know i'm saying um

11:16hey hey hey so so so so look yo hey so um i see all the comments everybody's like i i pray for us all to find this type of love so and that that's the dope thing about ryan it's like he very he pays attention to the detail of he's such a truth teller like you know what i'm saying that even like a a false tone about his wife he's gonna check that fast and i just appreciate that so much and i think that's what makes him a phenomenal storyteller is this like the music's always going to be the right music the tone the laugh the way you ask the question about my wife i'm like i'm gonna we're gonna get that right because you know it's sometimes it's in the little things how things are framed and i just appreciate that about him so much one of the reasons why not only is he one of my fave filmmakers but i just think he's super dope as a human being i don't know his wife i've never met her but i'm like her for number one fan i just love them as a couple and um it's just so nice to see that type of love you know what i'm saying that type of work relationship too by the way because because he'll tell you himself that that movie wouldn't have been what it was without her on it.

12:32So that was really nice to see. And then also a quick little clip of Michael B. Jordan at In-N-Out Burger after the awards.

13:04Back up, back up, back up.

13:16Oh

13:57The part in his speech where he says to his kids, I'm sorry that this is causing us to be, you know, spend so much time away from you. But the one thing I hope when I'm long and gone is that I leave you with good memories. I was weeping. You were weeping. Why are we so emotional? What's wrong with us? Why are we so emo? But that's what I mean. Because it was actually, there was so much genuine love happening. I don't know. It was just, yeah, I don't know. What do you think? Why? What were we going to say? I think you can relate when you put that much, when you really care and love about, love your work that you do.

Amazon Health AI gets you the right care fast. Health care just got less painful. By the way, speaking of making things, I posted recently, you know, I posted a clip that I finally, that I shadowed my boy Stephen Cable Jr.

19:01on the set of Man on Fire. So I posted this thing on Instagram that I have secretly been spending in filmmaking for the past. I don't know, four or five. I feel like since COVID, honestly, doing masterclasses, doing lessons, shadowing people, asking a lot of questions, doing research, reading books, all of that. Brittany, Brittany, too. Brittany's been on this journey with me, the two of us. And so I shared a post of how I was able to follow Stephen in Mexico City on the set of Man on Fire, which is getting ready to come out, which I'm very excited to see. but I was there when he was directing an episode in Mexico City.

19:37Now, Stephen, who was an amazing filmmaker, also friends with, not only is he friends with Ryan, Ryan, I believe, kind of put him on to Creed 2 because, you know, Ryan did Creed 1, Stephen did Creed 2, while I believe Ryan was doing Black Panther. Anyway, I say that's all that to say. Ryan Hoogler went to USC. Stephen Cable Jr. went to USC the person who won best documentary last night USC film student I don't know what we gotta do we don't know if there's like an online program or something but whatever they're doing at the film school at USC bravo because you're churning them out over there but yeah film makes an interesting beautiful I don't know craft In-N-Out after this Oscars the In-N-Out stock is up at USC is being flooded with applicants for sure that was happening as it should yeah it was a great night what else Tiana Taylor I know we talked about her not winning but she looked incredible she had an amazing night I'm certain I love seeing her there with her mom As women in filmmaking, for sure.

21:01Autumn winning best cinematography for being the first woman to ever win in that category. And when she tells all the women in the audience, she's like, if you're. Oh, it was so good. That's so good. and I'm so glad that the because you know sometimes people call out to the audience and they're like yo put your hands together or whatever and people don't oblige you're like whatever but all when they zoom out the camera to show everyone standing up you're like dang that's how many women are a part of this this industry and without their influence like and they all and they often go unnoticed they're often usually behind even the well even the woman who won for wardrobe best wardrobe i was thinking about my friend tiffany shout out to tiff the stylist you know she'd been doing this for years for all types of shows and films and projects and she she don't get that type of recognition but she'd be right next to the people making films and i was watching the woman who did win for wardrobe i think it was for frankenstein yeah which was spectacular frankenstein wardrobe is spectacular yeah so for that for her or and for Can you imagine my friend Tiffany?

22:10For all of the many, many women behind the scenes that have been working at this 10, 20, 30 years to finally be recognized. I mean, all that calls for Waterworks. All of that was very emotional yesterday. I love seeing you. 100%. I think an overall theme for it is like... Takes a village? Well, yes, of course, that takes a village. but also doing things without recognition, like still maintaining motivation throughout it without getting that pat on the back. Because even after an Oscar, after an award win, those women are still going to go back and do the same great level of work. And some people are there and they're never going to get it at all.

23:02So the Oscars is a nice, but it doesn't... I'm going to be honest. normally you watch the oscars and you see the big celebrity wins the best actor best supporting actor best whatever and everybody's like those are the moments i don't feel like those were the moments this year i feel like the moment for the people that were behind the camera the people that don't me were the moments that i got most emotional when she when autumn who's been a cinematographer for i don't know how many years makes the whole all the women in the room stand Or the woman, like I said, who won best wardrobe or just any of those moments.

23:39Or the agents. I feel like there was a moment with agents and just all the casting directors. And a casting director who, you know, people spend their whole life hours, lose sleep, lose and build a craft, a valuable craft that sits quietly kind of in the shadows while these big productions are made. and then the actor goes and gets the spotlight and gets the awards. But it's the people behind the scenes. It's the village. And to me, those moments last night were the most special moments at the Oscars. Those are the ones that got me a little watery-eyed, more than anything. And then, of course, Ryan.

24:17And it's amazing. I'll forever cry for them.

24:23But, yeah, I hope we see more of that. I think that was super dope. And the theme of it takes a village, but it's also like, what god has for you like that timeline is way above you like he's already whoever up there whatever you believe in that already has it figured out like you're taking a tiana who has been working since she was a teenager a baby she goes from music artists to quitting music to picking up a camera herself and creative directing all the way to now and you know now she's getting that recognition. And then even a Michael B. Jordan, who started off when he was also a kid from going from the wire, right?

25:06To now he finally... The commercials and what they built together as a team is even that, even the friendship of these two men at the awards together, having that grand moment together after Fruitvale Station, after Creed, after Black Panther, to be here during Sinners. I mean, it's really like, come on. This is pretty spectacular stuff. And then for them to be real ones, let's be honest. You know what I'm saying? No, seriously. It's not a small thing. And I think for me, that's more than half of the joy. It's that, that's a real one right there. man look at that that to me is the most inspiring part of it because there have been people successful in hollywood there have been people who have broke boundaries and knocked doors down and that's cool but like to be a real one and do it to me is a different level of of success to maintain who you are where you from the people you came up with your beliefs your your vision your art your your storytelling is so pure and honest and then you do it that way under those circumstances that to me is like that's the most inspiring it could get and so when ryan kugler is concerned that's how that's that's what i feel will happen and mike too and mike too he's so real that he won't even be on the the voting committee committee for the oscars because he's like no i don't want to i would feel bad judging my my peers art no he i'm trying to tell you he is a real one we are gonna start the ryan coogler fan club here at the eddie mark vingas iro podcast and by the way guys if you have not watched this episode please go back it was before sinners was it right before sinners why did it was way before sinners actually he was working on sinners right he was like working on it writing it but oh yeah he was doing the project uh with um the basketball

27:15but it's just it's an insight into him as a human like and as a creative and i i really love that episode and now granted we could be biased because we are like i said we we do fancy film and we aspire to be filmmakers and we're in that creative learning space right now and so maybe we're a little biased but i just think there's so much to learn about that um the way he navigates through his world and and he's just super dope and like i said a real one so definitely worth an episode worth watching if you haven't caught it yet also i highly recommend one of britney's favorite episodes ever on irl podcast tiana taylor right i don't want to misspeak that's my favorite ones it's definitely one of mine too for you whenever everybody asks you always refer to that one yeah because i always appreciate like if you want a glimpse of it just watch the trailer on that on the Angie Martinez IRL page because you can go out with the trailer let's go out with both their trailers on this episode no seriously we take time on those trailers for the pod we like after the episode I'm like what did we learn from them what did we talk about and then we make a trailer based on that and so it's the what we think is in the episode and it's just a sample it's the tiniest little sample ever but I'll give you both of those on the end of this so you can do it so you can check those episodes out anyway this is also a new episode random not Oscars related.

28:41Well, June Ambrose was at the Oscar party looking fabulous. But June Ambrose, our past episode, and there's some beautiful stories from June too about learning to deal with grief after losing her mom. She shares a story about J &B, and we don't really get to hear a lot of intimate stories about J &B and the way she shared it that I thought was pretty great. Anyway, another episode for you to check out that just dropped. All right, so as promised, I'm going to leave you with these two trailers, two episodes that you can check out as it relates to the Oscars. But feel free to check out whatever episode you like.

29:15Just make sure you subscribe and tell a friend. And I'll be back on Tuesday, Wednesday with a new episode. So hopefully you'll check that out. Thank you, Boost Mobile. Thank you, Brit. And we'll catch you soon. It feels like a real moment. Does it feel like that for you? Yeah, it definitely feels like the moment. A future Academy Award winning Tiana Taylor!

29:45Us being strong women is not by choice. You know what I'm saying? So it's just like to go to set 12 hours a day and be able to just like pour out and cry out loud every single emotion you've seen in the movie was real. What's on your mind? I feel like something's on your mind right now. You okay? Yeah. You just went somewhere. I don't know. It's a weird thing. I feel like we're talking about a lot of shit that I never really talk about. You know, being on the front end of things from 15, nobody ever really got to see my struggle. This is Tiana Taylor in real life. I'll just be trying to survive, man, and be able to sleep at night.

30:24I grew up loving movies, not knowing that I would eventually discover a passion for making them. You know what I'm saying? He was so intentional, like so present. You know what I'm saying? And I don't know if that was just who he was or what he was dealing with. Hollywood is not competitive? Nah, it's a lie. Really? Yeah. There's power in finding out what you love. Like I found what I love in a roundabout way. I thank God I was like open to it.

31:00Hey, guys, thanks for watching. Make sure you subscribe, like, comment, and check out all of the other episodes we have on H. Martinez IRL podcast.
