What were you thinking on your 80th birthday? They thought I was surprised. You were not? I knew about it, honey, way before they thought I did. Child, I knew. But I had to go along with it. I said, oh, wow. And when we opened the door and saw all of those wonderful people, I said, oh, I'm so shocked.
3:10Thanks for watching, guys. Today's episode is brought to you by Boost Mobile. So I want to toast to you. To me. And thank you for inviting me and my crew into your home. You have a lovely crew and you're my best friend. Are we best friends already? You are already. Already? I've known you for so long and I've just admired you. Really? Yeah, girl, you got it going on. Well, I have admired you, obviously, for many years. And your home feels as joyful and magnetic as you do. Thank you so much.
3:45Thank you, honey. That is a wine. Isn't it wine? What is that? I shouldn't give my plug. I'm not. I'll tell you, though. It's an expensive one, though, isn't it? No, that's right. Before we start, because I could easily get very comfortable in your home, took up my shoes already. Good. Had me a little patty pie already. Oh, wonderful. But I do want to do a proper intro, get some accolades going here so everybody can recognize the presence that we're in today. Patti LaBelle is an undeniable music legend whose career spans over six decades with classics like Lady Marmalade, On My Own, If Only You Knew.
4:21She's a Grammy winner, a Billboard chart topper. She has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Apollo Theater Hall of Fame. I mean, honestly, this could take all day and half the show. She's a phenomenal cook, like everybody knows. She has a track record of cooking for some of the music industry's best legends. They have been raving about her meals for years, and that eventually led to the founding of her own food brand. Her food company is undeniably successful. She has a heart as good as her voice and an energy that is just unmatched. The legendary Cady LaBelle is our guest today on IRF.
4:57When you think about some of those things, what do they mean to you? Are they important to you? Like when you think of accolades and all those awards and those moments and those... I think it's a blessing. I don't take anything for granted. And so when I'm being honored, and I just hope I say the right speech when I receive the award. You want to say something good? Something good and something meaningful. But it's crazy because even when you come in your house, there's all of this, there's so much memorabilia here. Like you clearly, it means something. Like your history, your career, your impact.
5:31I feel like you take the time to be surrounded by it and look at it and enjoy it. I do. I sometimes look at some of the awards that I've gotten and some of the letters from certain presidents, and especially Obama. I look at what I have achieved and how many people I think like me. Love you. Love me. And you know, you can never, ever say enough about that. It's just always an honor and a pleasure to know that somebody cares. I don't take it for granted, never. Sometimes I think it's like outrageous to certain people. They might say I'm too loud, too big, too just wrong. You know, a lot of people think that, you know, that.
6:18Who are these people? Some people that I won't name. Anyway, girl, listen, I have all my life I have been big in voice and never holding back. Even as a kid, like young? No, young I was very shy. I didn't do anything. I played with my cat, called him Skippy. He committed suicide because I would put nail polish on his little feet. And he ran away one day, but I know he went in the sewer close to my house. He committed suicide. And I had butterflies. I was a very lonely child. No friends. Really? Cats and butterflies. Yes. That is not what I would have expected. Oh, and I would go in the garage and make hot sauce.
7:02I would use ketchup. Well, that I would expect. Yeah, that I did start cooking in my younger years. Yeah. And I've been just a shy girl and I'm still kind of shy. That's not that can't be possible. Why? Because I see you on that stage. Girl, that's what you see. Stage Patty and then here's Patty with you. I'm very like I was very nervous to do this interview with you. Are you kidding me? Girl, I'm serious. Who is that? Because you're big. No, you're Patti LaBelle. And you're important. And I'm big. You are. I know, but I still admire you. And that brings off a little bit of nervous Patti to you.
7:43See, when I saw you in the kitchen, I hugged you first. Give me your hair. But no, it's real. And it's because you're so special. Thank you. And I meet special people and I let them know I think they're special. don't hold back. I love that. That's so surprising to me. You're so amazing. Does it ever change that like inner kind of, I don't know, shyness or will you question yourself? I still question certain things about me at 81. I still ask, well, what do you think about that? What do you think about this? And if it's something I don't want to hear, I just don't talk to them anymore. I just figure it out on my own.
8:22Figure it out on your own. No, but every year that I've been on this planet, I've been whoever I ended up being at the end of that year, she was cool. She was good. She was the one that I have to be because I couldn't pretend that she didn't exist. We just had Jill Scott on the podcast recently, your Philly sister. Philly girl. Have you spent a lot of time with her? When we can. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. But we don't get time. She's always on tour and I'm always on tour. The reason I brought her up is because we just interviewed her and she had this theory about age and women. And I'm curious your take on it.
9:01She said, Jill Scott, thing of life for women. She said, you work hard in your 20s, you work smart in your 30s, you work how you want to in your 40s, you work when you want to in your 50s, and you work if you want to in your 60s, which I thought was good and people really related to that. But then she stopped because she doesn't have the perspective. 70s and 80s. What happens? You still do what you did in your 50s. Hmm. I do. Really? Oh, yeah. So you don't there's no shift. But do you does that any of that ring true to you? That some of the some of the things, you know, but it's like I've been whoever I am now that I was at 20.
9:42Really? I know I am. I know it. Are you the same? I'm the same boring girl. You're not making the same mistakes though. No, that I won't. I won't make any more. No more drama. None. You're not making the same mistakes you made in your 20s and 30s and your 40s. Well, I still have little pieces of some of my 30s and 40s and my 80s. I do. And it's nothing that's going to hurt me. You know, I, like I said, I'm blessed to be in this place of where I am at 80. I'm still walking, talking, thinking the way I did in 30s and 40s. Making impact, having a business, a successful business. Yeah. It's like I never really thought at 80 I would really still be standing on stage singing.
10:32Really? Yeah. I'm amazed at my stamina. I'm amazed at my still having an audience. I'm amazed that I haven't had a single or an album in 22 years, an R &B album. I've had jazz and gospel, but I'm working on the R &B album. I'm saying, God, it's been a long time since that happened. And like I said, I'm still saying, girl, you're blessed. Because people don't even buy music from 80-year-old chicks. Yeah. They're going to buy yours though. I hope so, because I'm going to give them something they can feel. That we know for sure. Yeah. What were you thinking on your 80th birthday? Because I saw some of the photos and videos.
11:21I, first of all, they thought I was surprised. You were not? I knew about it, honey, way before they thought I did. Telling me that we're going to a meeting with Walmart. Now I have this beautiful Zang toy dress on now and all these blings on my ear. It's your 80th birthday. It's my 80th birthday. What are we going to a meeting with Walmart for me looking like this? So you played along? I played along. Yeah. And they still thought they got me when we went to the back of this restaurant. We pulled in where no people were and all that stupid stuff. Child, I knew, but I had to go along with it. I said, oh, wow.
11:59And when we opened the door and saw all of those wonderful people, I said, I'm so shocked. Who was there? Tell me. Paint the picture for me a little bit. Take me into the party. Gosh. Can't remember? Tamron, Gayle King, I think Whoopi. All the women. It was so many entertainers there. And so many, like my mailman was there. Your mailman? Oh, I love that. From Philadelphia, came to New York to the party. He was invited. They were invited. And just everybody, everybody. I kept my niece was there. Oh, Stacy the day of Stacy's birthday, May 18. Happy birthday, Stacy. Yeah, she was there all of my I don't have many family members left.
12:45But the ones that I have, they were all there. It was just fun. My band, my background singers, just so many people. It was a beautiful party. 13:59So download the Hard Rock Bet app today and let's get the party started. What is that? What is that? Like you said, I don't have that many family members because my mom's always talking about that. My mom is in her seven inches. She's always like, she's the oldest now. Oh, she's the, you know, so she lost. She lost. Yeah. Yeah. So now she's older. She has three younger. So she's still, you know, she has siblings still, but she is like becoming the matriarch. And I think, I think it's tricky. Why did you say that? Because I think it's scary for some people. Like, I don't know that she's all the way leaning into it yet.
14:34I want her to. Because she's young and vibrant and she does stuff and she travels and she's got a great life. There's nothing. That's great. It's just age in your head. People who think they turn old after 50. Yeah. You're as old as you make yourself. It's like 73 hours on Dance With The Stars. The Masked Singer and all that kind of stuff. And a lot of people would see me at the airport, Patty, you've given me courage. I said, how? By seeing you on Dancing with the Stars and stuff, and you're in your 70s. And I am, but I'm afraid to take chances. I said, that's the problem. People are afraid to take chances after a certain age.
15:14I'm going to take them until I take my last step. Courage you. I have to, yes. Where does that come from? Like, did somebody teach you that? Did you have to learn it? I think I was taught by my mother and my father. They were go-getters. I was laid back, but, you know, I still, I had this talent. And somehow it had to come out. Yeah. And so that's when I'm not shy, that talent comes out. But I am still a shy woman. This is not what I expected. I know. I'm so fascinated by that. That's why we're going to get you some wine. Yeah, sweet. Hey everybody, thank you for looking and listening. Happy early birthday.
15:58Thank you, darling. Swig. Mmm. Mmm. So delicious. Mmm. Let's go through some of these moments in your life, some of these songs. Oh, wow. Because you know, this is in real life. We like to learn the real lessons. I want you to learn some of the real lessons behind some of these, some of these classic Cattie LaBelle songs. Come on. So, On My Own, I hear that song now in 2026 and I think, man, there's women sitting in their house today. What year did you make that song? I don't know. Girl, I remember years. I'm like that too. I can never remember years. It must have been about 20 years ago. No. Maybe.
16:42More? Maybe. Girl, I don't know. Does anybody know In the House? What? On My Own. On My Own. That was in the 80s. Okay. That was 40 years ago. Wow. Whoa. Go ahead. Make a song 40 years ago called On My Own. On my own.
17:04I'm on my own. I love that song. You still love it? Yes. How could you not, right? I do. But even when you hear that song, I was looking at, it's like, I thought everything was going to be okay you know like and then it's not and then here I am on my own that's the way it happens sometimes yes and what is the lesson in that I guess the lesson is if you're lucky enough to be together and stay together that's a blessing I mean I was married for 35 years to my wonderful husband but we couldn't see eye to eye after a time so I became solo and he became solo but I'm on my own without him but I'm doing well and so is he mm-hmm so it makes you feel good when your partner that you leave or whatever breakup happens that they're still doing well mm-hmm so you pray that that person still has a good life that's the way I think you well you did it well then because the breakups are not easy for a lot of people no they're not and we're recording together so we still see each other you know we work together still yes all these years all these years there's still friendship and love and like it's family right it's still family yeah I mean we gave birth to a wonderful son he didn't I did hey baby you looking for mommy so yeah we're still friends that's beautiful mm-hmm but that's life it is right mm-hmm yes it's hard for a lot of women though oh it is was it hard for you at that time no even in the time no it's one thing to reflect on it years later like okay i got through that and it was you know blah blah blah but when you're in the throes of big changes in life like that we knew we had to split so um it wasn't hard it was inevitable we knew that we couldn't be together as married But as friends, yes.
19:13Mm-hmm. And then never a desire to do it again? No. No. You're okay with that? No, honey, I'm 81. I would've been getting married. You never know. I would look good. Yeah. You would still be a fly bride. Right. But I'm living my life like it's platinum. Mm-hmm. Yes. If only you knew.
19:44Oh, if only you knew how much I am crazy about you. I mean, that's the song that you're very much in love and you don't know if he knows it or not. It's just the lyrics of it. Like, you can't even suspect that you probably could care less about the changes that I've been going through. Because I love you so and you don't even know. You don't even know when I'm sitting here. you could be in a whole marriage, a whole relationship. You could be dating somebody for however long and the other person could have no idea. They don't have a clue. What is going on inside. It's true. I mean, there's so many people live that life.
20:24You know, and I've never lived that life. You never have? No, not like that. Have you always said what you... I always say what's on my heart. You know, I'm not going to have anybody guessing. Smart. And I'm gonna not keep it to myself. If only you knew. Sometimes women can get in their own heads. Oh, yes. So we can do that. So we don't say it all the time. You know, punks. You messed up for yourself, girl. Say it. Say it. Talk about it. That's your advice. Say it. Mm-hmm. Lady Marmalade. Be a lady marmalade. Ah!
21:06So the opening, hey sister, go sister, soul sister, go sister. What is a soul sister? What is the meaning of a soul sister to you? Well, in this particular song, well, she's a hooker. And means, will you sleep with me tonight? When we recorded the song, we had no clue what it was about until the song came out and was selling and doing really well. And we got some complaints from nuns. Nuns were having a moment with Patti LaBelle and the Bluebell singing, no, LaBelle. That's when we were at LaBelle, singing about ladies of the evening. And I would just say, well, they have to make a living too.
21:49You know, I can't snatch the mattress from on them. They gotta do what they gotta do. And that was a hit, not knowing it was about a hooker. And that's what a soul sister is? What does a soul sister mean? No, soul sister's not a hooker. No, no. Soul sister is just us. Yeah. We're soul sisters. Yeah. I'm in Vuli Rukashem, and she was doing some business. I feel like you are a soul sister to many. I sure am. I am a soul sister. What does that mean to you, though? It means it's like a graduation, because when you're a baby, you're a little girl. And as you grow up and to whatever you're going to do, you become a soul, soul, soul sister.
22:31I mean, I'm a soul sister because I do soul things, soulful things. And there could be a white soul sister too. You don't have to be black to be a soul sister. So I just consider myself a soul sister, but not a hooker. I would hope not. I know some people might get it twisted, you know, but that's what it is to me. That's probably why you connect with so many women. I sure do. Of course, somebody loves you, baby. Somebody loves you, baby.
26:12It's one of my favorites. Oh, yeah. But it's interesting because you're like deeply in love and somebody loves you, baby. You said you could make a slave out of me. You know that's a lie. But that was the lyric. Okay, Bunny Sigler wrote that one. He put that line in. I said, I'm going to say it. I'm going to sing it, but you can never make a slave out of me. I worship you and nobody else. I give my heart to you forever and ever and ever. Yes. That's a deep love song. You sing it like you mean that, though. I do. You do mean it. I do mean it. Yes, somebody that somebody is me. Somebody loves you, baby.
26:59All the way live. Yes. But I don't know. I think now, especially, like, women are so, like, independent and don't want to... like worshiping your man, that kind of notion of being so... It's like giving your all to a man. Yeah. I'm not that girl. You're not. No, no. Unless it's really deep, deep love. You felt that though before in your life, yeah? Oh, heck yeah. Yeah. I'm only human. Yes. But some of the lyrics in certain songs, like I said, I didn't write it, but I'll be a slave for you. No way will I ever be that for anybody. You could probably sing anything, huh? Well, I try. I try to with meaning and with understanding that it's a song.

27:51You know, like I said, Lady Marmalade is a song. I'm not that girl. A lot of songs are beautiful and they're written. And some of the lines, you just say, God, would I really say that in certain songs? but um i've been blessed to have songs that i can say every line in what are you most proud of in your career my career well it's not my career but my life i'm most proud of my son he's better than a grammy how did being a mom change you though like i never thought i would ever have a child Why? Because I was into my animals, my cats and dogs. You were about to be a cat mom, that's it. A cat woman.
28:39No, I just really never thought of becoming pregnant. And the story is, which I know Zori don't like to hear, but my friend Laura Nero, a great performer, she took us to Japan, me and my husband. And Zori was made in Japan. He hates that. You don't want to know. You don't want to know about that. I know, but he was made in Japan. And the best gift that I could have gotten was giving birth to him. Yeah. How does it change you though? Like, so what shifts? You have a baby, you've been on your own, you're Patti LaBelle already. You're already Patti LaBelle, right? When you had him, you already have a successful career.
29:23Here's the deal, Angie. I couldn't take care of him. So I had a great husband and a great, he had a great sister who took him, Aunt Mary, would take him everywhere. And they took care of him when I was, you know, on the road, which was a lot. We stayed on the road. And when I would come home, I would try to buy him things. And he said, I don't need any new shoes, Mom. I don't need pants. He was humble. And he would go in the truck if a limo came from me, he would go in the baggage truck. He would not ride in that limo. And today he still doesn't tell people he's my son when he's doing business.
30:04And they find out later because the promoter might come in the dress room after the show to say thank you, Ms. LaBelle. And I would say, oh, this is Zori. He says, Zori, my son. He said, you're her son. See, he never lets people know that, which is cool. He's just there as representation or management. Right, right. He doesn't go around talking, I'm Patti LaBelle's son. Never will you hear that from him. Wow. Yeah, so he's just cool. And he's here now, and I know he's listening. Yeah, I want to talk to you about that, too. We'll get back to that, too, because I know you're doing such great business together in the food company.
30:40Me, him, and Charles, and Alex. Woo! Oh, wreck the buffet over there. You okay? You want to take a little sip or a break? I want to take a sip. No breaks on Broadway. Look at me. I'm already like, I'm blowing past you, Patty. Come on now. Come on now. What's all your spirit these days? Like what season is this for you? It's a good season until I look at TV and see the world. And that's, oh, it's so bad right now. So I pray a lot for me and for those who are going through, and we're all going through. So that's all my spirit. It's scary. It's unpredictable. And it's, gosh, some of the things I can't say.
31:38But you know what I mean. Of course. Yes. Yeah, of course. How do you find peace for yourself in it? Because you still have to have joy. Yeah, I find joy in cooking and cleaning. And doing what I do, watching TV, I take that remote and I click all day. I do, I mean, that's what I do. I don't really like party. Oh, I play cards. We have card games on the weekend. That's a good time. What do you play? We play AC Doocy. Oh, I love AC Doocy. You do? Yes. Well, you can come to some of our games. Please, I will be here. And we play Pity Pat. I don't know how to play Pity Pat, but I learn real fast. Oh, I'll teach you.
32:22I'm very competitive. It's so much fun because we have like maybe 10 or 15 people on the weekend. Sometimes I cook. Sometimes they'll all bring something anyway. And that's so much fun. When I win, ooh, it's more fun. Girl, but when I lose, I say, I'll see you guys later. I'm going to go watch Netflix. I get so mad. You're competitive. Right. I am competitive. You would have to be. Yes. So that's really, and we play cards on the road, me and my glam squad. So that's how you keep some joy. You keep some balance and not get too sucked into like, what's wrong with the world. Yes. And of course, we all know we're thinking the same things.
33:06about what a bad place the world is in at this moment. Do you ever recall it being like this? Never. Or even close to it? I don't think so. I mean, it could have been close, but it's never been like this. This is all the way deep. It's just scary. So when you pray for it, what do you ask for? I ask for peace. and I ask for kids not to be hungry. You see those commercials where they're starving or somebody's beating an animal and animals all beat up and stuff. I just wish that we could be nicer. Kind. And kind in this world. That would help a lot. Yeah. You get on the elevator, nobody speaks. When we get on the elevator, I speak to everybody.
33:59You do? Yeah, you have to. It's just, we're frightened. What are other things that people should do to have a kinder, joyful, bright world? I would say just acknowledge everyone. Nobody's not a person that shouldn't be acknowledged. We're all somebody. And when I see people just ignoring people who have less than them, that bothers me. Cuddles is licking my ankle. He's over here. Yes, he is. I have on lotion and he loves this lotion. Patty, you got good toes. Those toes are good. Thanks, girl. And all of those kind of things when you don't speak to your garbage men, when you don't speak to people, when you think you're better than someone else.
34:49There's so many ugly things that we look at and see people go through that's so unnecessary. Have you ever had to self-correct something about yourself that you didn't like and you had to change? I bet I have. Oh, let me see. Yeah, that I speak too much to everybody. It's like somebody... Everybody's nice. Yeah, and I get in that trap where I think everybody's wonderful and I give everybody a second chance. And sometimes I wish I would not have because some of it got me in trouble. Yes, but that's who I am. Yeah. Miss love a lot. You give people too many chances sometimes. I do. Oh, what? Yeah.
35:34Oh, I have about 10 people with me who should have been gone. But it's hard for me to say bye. And you've never self-corrected that? You've never changed? You just stayed just like that? I stayed the same. To a fault. But that's my heart. And I just let people stay. What is that? It's crazy. That's really what it is. It's crazy. Girl, don't you love yourself a little more than that? And I think I do. You're compassionate. But I cannot hurt feelings. You're compassionate. Oh, I'm very... Like I said, to a fault. Yeah. Yes. You're that girl. I'm so that girl. I know you are. Well, that's why I'm interested in you saying that, because I'm in a place in my life where I feel like, give me a little history right like so my father was not in my life right i thought he was dead my whole life because from drugs i found out a couple years a few years ago that he was still alive but my whole life i thought this man's i wasn't mad at my father for not being in my life i thought he just had a drug problem and he disappeared whenever then i found that he was alive like not that many years ago right and so but doing that made me have it made me have compassion for everybody oh he's not a bad person he just has a problem or right she's not she's not mean she's just she wasn't treated right right she's gone through what's that oh just died right let me give her a break but i learned that from being a kid making excuses for a parent that's how you learn that right that's learned behavior uh-huh so then as my life as i'm getting older i'm starting to feel like maybe why do i i don't know if i want to do that so much i want to be still i still want to be like you and still have my i want to hold on to my compassion yes but i want to learn how to have some better discernment so that i know that's hard yeah it's hard when you're the way you are period that's you a giver uh yeah but is there no way to that's you're making me scared right now because you're making me feel like I'm always going to be like this.
37:50I have a feeling you are. I am. And that's not going to hurt you. I mean, that's the way you're used to being. And I'm used to being this way. So I know I'm not going to change at my age. I'm going to still be that person who'll give you 15 chances. I just do. And you have no regrets about that?
38:09Yes, I do, but I can't change. So that's it. I'm that person that can walk over me sometimes. because I'm not going to hurt you. Mm-hmm. But you won't... And that's stupid. Really, that's what it is, but... Don't call me stupid, though. But I'm a little special. We're all a little special. Yes, we are. And we're all trying to figure it out still. I know I am, but I'm going to be this girl probably until... Yeah. Yes. Do you beat yourself up? Are you like, or no? I do. Does that get easier? I keep, I fought myself yesterday big time for... For what? I can't tell you. Okay. But you did something.
38:50I did something that was just not in my favor, but I did it. You know, it was just something. But after I did it and after today, just thinking about what I did, I said, well, that's just who you are. You're never going to change. So it's giving you, it's just like coming to terms with certain things and who you are and being at peace with it. And I do. And then after I think about it, I think that I'm a little more blessed than they are. So let me continue to give and just beat myself up later. But I can't stop giving. That's so funny. You know, today I was on the plane and I don't usually repost things like this, but you're saying this and I posted something today.
39:38What did you say? It was a meme and I felt it. And what you're saying is like the same thing. It's what you give. This is for you then, Batty. Maybe that's why I posted it. Maybe it was for you. What we give doesn't always return, but what we give is always what we are. True. It's just what we are. That's what we are. And I know you're the same way. You're not going to change. Thanks. I really want to. And that's not a great thing to change. I mean, you're the way you are. You've been comfortable in your life the way you are as a giver. That's who you are, boo. You aren't ever going to change.
40:18Don't you think people can change though, Patty? Do you think that's... Oh, I think people can change, but I can't. But you can't? I can't. There's nothing you've changed in your life. I don't believe that. Oh yeah, there have been things, but it's hard for me to change what I'm feeling for certain people now as far as me saying i'm finished it's just so hard yeah so i i think people call me patty the forgiver that's that's but that's also probably why you're so blessed and why people love you so much i just love loving on people i just do people feel that too yeah and zory is that way too he likes loving on people too yes he don't think i know it but i know He does it in a masculine sense.
41:01Right, right. He does a masculine version of that. Really, he's that person. And I love that he is. I'm going to take you back real quick and then we'll wind up towards the end. But like, when did you realize that you were special? Like, when did you realize, man, I got this, like, this is going to be something. Wow. Wow. I guess after I recorded Somewhere Over the Rainbow, I started feeling really great about myself. And the way people responded to it just made me feel wonderful. Did you not grow up with that feeling? Because I always hear people who have careers like yours and gifts like yours that they always had this sense of like this purpose that they were going to be, I don't know.
41:55I never thought that. No. I never thought I would be. I thought I would be a chef. That's what I really thought I would be. But not a big, big entertainer. And the reason I feel that way with Rainbow is that it was everyone's favorite of my singing my way. And whenever I would do TV shows or big shows or like a BET award or the not Grammys because they didn't have me there but whenever I would do that song I would get such an ovation and that's the first time I felt like oh girl you got it and then how did you receive that I need it mm-hmm I need applause really oh yeah where does that come from from me just like what it just comes from me I don't know what it is did you always need attention like well I was so shy.
42:52I probably, like I said, I had cats and butterflies and nobody to do that. I need applause. Are you addicted to it? Do you think a little bit? Yeah, I am. When you put your heart in to anything you do and you get a great response that feels like great. It feels great. Are there ups and downs in that though? Because we're all chasing something. I'm always trying to figure out like I always stop myself and ask myself like what are you chasing why are you working so hard like what do you want what is the end goal here like what are you beating yourself up because I want to make sure I want to be intentional about that so when you have a career like yours like are you thinking that way like are you chasing something are you just in it I'm not chasing I am just always going to do it but I'm not chasing anything If the standing ovation comes, fine.
43:45If it doesn't, I'm still in it. You're still in it. So if it doesn't come, you're not sad. It's not like a low. Heck no. Really? Uh-uh, because there have been times when there wasn't a standing ovation. It didn't bother me because I knew I'd give it my best. But it's like a challenge for you? Well, I don't know. What do you think? I think you probably, you're a giver. and so when they stand up you feel like you've served them true this is my guess from my conversation with you I feel like that's probably like you're a giver you you feed people you love on people I think so when you see people standing in ovation you know they're moved yeah they're moved to a level of you've served them in some type of way yeah so um it just makes me feel great to see it and if I don't I still feel great you do yeah when do you ever not because you always see him child there been times when I couldn't sing when my voice was just not there and I got scared you know I said what is this it was life and it was because I I worked so hard and sometimes you work your voice away and I'd sing my voice away and it happened for a few months then you got it back I got it back thank God yeah I was petrified that must have been terrible it was bad do people know that is that like a known public thing yeah the audience they know they knew yes they knew and I was always told you sound great you said I know when I don't sound great huh that's so interesting because you think somebody has a gift and it's just always there oh honey it leaves when it wants to okay and you you can't pray for it back you can't do anything but say lord just what happened and you don't know and of course you go to throat doctors and vocal coaches and all that stuff and they can't bring it back you know so you you're blessed to get it back yes you think of it as a gift right like oh it is a gift yeah yes And you take care of it, I'm sure.
45:58I do. I don't smoke. I have occasional wine. I don't drink hard liquor. I don't do drugs. I don't do anything. Mm-hmm. But I have this wine and water what I want. I mean, it's pretty good. It's pretty good. Very good. Hey, guys, you ever sign up for a phone plan thinking, wow, what a great price? And then a few months later, it's like, surprise, your bill is higher. I can't remember ever seeing her otherwise. That was her question. How do you stay? Oh, Shirley. My mom is her birthday. July 28th. She's a Leo. Okay. Hey, Shirley. I said, you're exuberant and joyful too. She was like, not all the time. Ditto. Not all the time, but most of the time, I mean, I am. I always say to myself at 82, why are you still like you were when you were 40? Yeah. What is that? You have to give us the key to that, Patty.

I don't go to church or anything like that, but it's in my heart. I go to church in my home with myself. I don't need a minister. You pray a lot. I pray a whole lot. Yeah. Yes. And let me get through a show, a 90-minute show. And my voice was funny before I went on, but during that show, it came back.
52:14Stuff like that. And I say after that show, girl, you are truly blessed. Sounding like a frog for a minute. Pulled it together. Then something good came out. Yeah. So there's no like routines or rituals. It's just prayer and it's just what it is. Yeah. I and I just know that I'm blessed, surely. And you are too, girlfriend. Yes. Yes. Lean into that. She has to. Yeah. I mean, like I said, I'm here. I do think there's a difference. Everybody says I'm blessed. There's a difference in saying those words because it's like, oh, what a blessing but literally waking up every day and feeling it and operating in it yes and acknowledging it is different you just carry it different when you live your life that way versus something you say all the time and i feel like that's probably the difference i live my life this way it's like i said i have a lot of faults a lot of down moments but when i can get up in morning always say he woke me up this morning and now with this 24 hours that I'm blessed with depending on what time I wake up I'm gonna do the best I can with it with the time that I have because like I said my sisters didn't have as much time as I've been given I've been given a lot of time that must have been hard how many sisters did you have three three oh wow that's tough yes And they all died before they turned 45.
53:56That's outrageous. That's a lot of sadness. I know, a whole lot. What do you do with all that sadness? How do you manage that? You take it and you say, well, I know they wouldn't want me to feel bad that they're not here. You know, so I do what they want me to do. And my sister Jackie was the biggest Patti LaBelle fighter ever. If you said you didn't like me, she was going to beat you up. And she was this big little thing. And there was four of you in the house growing up. Oh, yeah. It was four ladies. My God, we would wear each other's clothes, try to put them back before they got back from work or whatever, so they wouldn't know that they'd been worn.
54:32I guess I was cleaning school, honey, wearing their clothes. Beautiful clothes. And I miss them all like crazy. So I have their pictures all around and say, Oh my gosh, what would you do if you saw me do this or do that or dance with the stars? What would you say? What would they say? They would say, girl, you're crazy. So you still talk to them. Because I'm not a dancer. You still talk to them. Oh yeah. You still feel connected. I am connected, yes. So that's probably part of your blessing. They're probably part of you. Oh, they are. They are. And my mother and father who died young. And I, like I said, I'm still standing.
55:15Wow. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You say that now with Patti, but my God, your sisters, your parents going young, there had to be a period where that was not an easy time for you. Oh, it wasn't at all. But I did, if you asked me to, the video after I buried my sister Jackie, and on my shoulder in the church was a butterfly. And I love butterflies. And that was her saying, you better do that video. Because it was something in my business that I was contracted to do. And I said, no, I'm not going to do it. So when I did it, I kicked my shoes off. I cried. So the tears in that particular video, they were real.
56:03After burying my sister, yeah. It's been some good stuff I've gotten from them. Just good stuff. Good advice, just good everything before they all passed. They passed it on to me. Well, they still left you with stuff even after they passed, right? Yes, they did. They're still talking to you. Uh-huh, they are. What a blessing. Yes, it is. I know you sang at Celia's service. Oh my God, I sang at her memorial. I sang Ave Maria. Her husband called me because he knew that we were buddies. and when I sing at her memorial at the cathedral I think that's where her services were held. Girl I sang that song I felt like an angel just singing for her.
56:50At the time she was... I didn't know you guys were friends I know you had that performance and stuff I didn't know you were friends. We were. That sounds like a good time. Oh crazy crazy. Are you crazy? Crazy wonderful time and so she was going to teach me to speak spanish and i was going to teach you to speak good english i said girl i'm not even a good speaker of english but i'm gonna teach you i'm gonna show you what i know right and we have plans together but she left yeah what a wonderful woman yeah i was a big fan of hers too were you yeah i loved seeing the two of you together in energy forever how old was she when she passed about 75?
57:32I thought she was older. Really? I thought so. I thought she was older. You would know. Yeah, I thought she was older. I could be wrong. I could totally be wrong. 77. Oh, 77. Yeah, you were about right. I remember that day. Yeah, she was some woman. Yeah. You've had a lot of great experiences with people, though. I sure have. I mean, I have so many wonderful people in my life that were in my life. Richard Pryor was. So was Prince. And Michael Jackson and I had a moment. Tell me that. Have you seen this movie? What? I've seen it twice. You did see it twice? I saw it twice already too. Oh, the best movie.
58:10It's so good because it's so, I don't know, it just takes you to this one period. It makes you see him in a, the child in him in a different way. How he went through his life was amazing. And he was born with that talent. And I watched it twice. So he and I, I was performing overseas somewhere, the Prince was something, Prince or something. You and Prince was besties, huh? No, this was another Prince. I think he had like a crush on you low-key. Who, Prince? Yeah. I know he did. Okay.
58:45I'm only joking. But he probably did. No, he clearly did. Yeah, he took care of Miss Patty Patty. And no, it was footprints of some big old, you know those rich people. And so Michael was there and he and I sang Lady Marmalade together that night. And I sang for him for the, oh God, it was some, I've done a few things with Michael that were just beautiful. I can't remember the other thing. Is Lady Marmalade, is there video of that? Is that out? It might be. Is that something I can search? It might be on YouTube, Patti LaBelle and Michael Jackson sing Lady Marmalade. And where were we? We were, where were we?
59:28Somewhere over, overseas. And what is that experience like? It was just wonderful. I said, okay, why not? Why shouldn't he sing Lady Marmalade with me? And he did his little dance. It was just beautiful. Yeah, I have a picture of him somewhere in this house. Somewhere in the house? Mm-hmm. Yeah. I know you guys' stories, but I want to walk around the house and just see all the photos. Oh, so many wonderful moments. So many. Huh? You honored him. You and Darryl Coley sang for him at the NWCC. What was it? Oh, yes. That song. What did she sing? Will You Be There? No, I'll Be There? Or no. Da-da, da-da-da, da-da-da, da-da-da, da-da-da.
1:00:12Yeah. They had that one. Ooh, that song, and Darryl Coley. Ooh. And there's video of that. There's that, but not her and Michael singing Lady Marmalade? Yeah. I feel like if there was video of you and Michael Jackson singing Lady Marmalade, I would find... And it might be. Where were we when we performed? I don't know. South of France, is that Zuri? South of France. Yes. And it was for a prince. Um, right? Right. Anyway. Oh, you probably got a lot of those. I don't remember. I just know I've had fun in my life. I've had so many wonderful moments. That's a good highlight reel. You got a good highlight reel of memorable inauguration.
1:00:58You went to that. Did you sing for the Obamas? No? I saw a picture of you, I believe. You never sang for them? I did sing for the Obamas. Oh, I sure did. Right in his face. That's my dog. Yeah. Right. Yes, it was he, Michelle and Michelle's mother sitting in the front row. And I just gave him a little speech. I said, I am so honored to perform for Mr. Obama. I said, because you got swag. I've had fun times in my life. I have fun times. I had great times with Cyndi Lauper, with Pink, just with a lot of the young girls in the industry, with Gladys and Dion, with Oprah, just times. Good for you. All right, let's go to some business a little bit because I love that you're in business with your son.
1:01:57with my son. That's challenging for sometimes people to work with family. Well, he's my manager also in my rock and roll life. Okay, so he's all around me and with Alex and Charles and Zori. And they've always known for a fact that I could cook. So back in the day, we started talking about food and the sweet potato pie was the first big thing. Yes, I remember. That we did. I remember it went viral. I just snuck one in the kitchen, by the way. Oh, yeah, good. It was good, wasn't it? It was delicious. Yes. And so right now we're doing breakfast. Oh, nice. Yeah, because my grandkids love waffles.
1:02:42And so I made them for them one day. And they say, where did you buy this, like from a grocery store? I said, no, boo, I made that right there in the kitchen with my hands. And they said, oh, they're so good. That's what we're doing now with the syrup, the pancakes, um gosh we're just doing a lot of stuff yeah and um of course you know the other stuff the macaroni the greens the yeah you have like there's a full food line now yeah and it's doing really well yeah it's doing really well thank you and syrup yeah she said syrup yes and And I just like talking about how great that is. Yeah. You know, and not a surprise.
1:03:26I was going to say. Because it was quality. You know, when you give great food for a decent price, you feel great about your product. So my product was something that you would fall in love with if you like good food. Yeah, I like good food. And good products, and I know you do. I can't wait to try the other stuff. I only had the pie so far. You have to try the breakfast foods. Okay. Yes. Are they out? Are they on the shelves already? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, I'm going to do that next. They're in so many stores. And what is your dream for this company? Like, is this a... Oh, honey, let's top it. Let's go as high as anybody.
1:04:01Let's be the best in this industry because we're qualified to be the best. And it's no joke. I mean, I am like... You don't think small, huh? I don't think small. No, you have to think top. and with the three guys with Zuri, Charles and Alex, it's nothing but top work. They work like, oh, they work hard promoting my mind. Yeah. And I'm happy to be with them. I trust all of them. And that's a good thing in business. You have to trust who's taking care of your stuff. Hey guys, support for this podcast is brought to you by Walden University. All right, let's go to the bowl. This is our IRL bowl. Okay. Take a question out the bowl. And.
1:05:29If money were limitless, what would you, no, no, Patty. What would be the first thing you would buy or do? Whoa, I would buy a bunch of houses for people who can't afford them. Aw, look at you still giving. I would. Yeah. Because they're hard to buy. Yeah. They're expensive. They're very expensive. Especially now. Limitless. Yeah. I would just do stuff like that. Take care of people. Buy cars, buy homes. Yeah, take care of people. Mm-hmm. All people who are in trouble. Mm-hmm. What are still some of your big goals? What are some of the things you still want to do in the world? Oh, not much. Really?
1:06:11I have done enough for me. I'm not a vacation girl. I don't like to travel. There's no mountain you want to climb? Heck no. There's no bungee jumping? No mountain, no jumping, and no darn crazy stuff. No. I'm just satisfied with my life the way it is. Wow. I want to just keep performing and recording and doing what I do, cooking. Dancing, playing those darn cards. Playing with the dog. Yes, playing with the dogs. But there's nothing that I think of that I would want to do other than what I'm doing already. What a beautiful thing to be able to say. I really mean it. Yeah. No, but I know, but everybody wants to be at peace, what you're talking about, right?
1:07:02I'm very much at peace. Mm-hmm. Like I said, when I come home, I don't want to leave to go on vacation or go someplace beautiful or whatever. This is it. Home. I am happy being home. Good for you. No regrets. Do you have any regrets? Not really. No regrets. No, nothing that's important. No, I'm good. What do you think your superpower is? Cooking. Cooking. Yes. Really? Really. that's it that's it that's my superpower it's not how you connect with people or you're like no no my superpower is cooking wow and i made food today i mean yesterday and the my beauty uh squad my glam squad they tasted the food that i made and they all lost their minds but they can only have a little bit because i only had a little left i wish i was here to eat i know your leftovers in the fridge because I will take a left over.
1:08:04I will go for a left over. What do you like most about yourself besides your cooking? I love my voice. I love my singing voice. Yes. What is one thing that you hope never changes about you? My heart. I hope my heart never changes. I hope I continue, that I will continue to give. And I don't want that to change. Like I said, sometimes it's to a fault. But I don't mind. You've come to terms with that, right? Yes, I have. That's who I am. I'ma work on that. I'ma work on that for myself. You have to. You will. I'm not at the terms with that. I'm still trying to fight it. I'm like, no, I need better for me.
1:08:47You got it, girl. You got it. Oh, he has a bad cough too. All right, baby. Mr. Cuddles?
1:09:00okay no he has um his larynx is collapsing yeah baby let's talk this man do you want me to get him you want me to get him i'll get him i'll get him i'll get him Yeah. Oh, you want me to hold? I'm on camera. We're going to get this. OK, let's wait. Let's see. Is he OK? Yeah. Are we going to wrap up with Cuddles in the shot? Yes. Let's try it. OK. Cuddles was hanging on to be seen. Oh, my god. Look at Cuddles. That's a baby. Is he OK? Yeah. So sweet. He's not well, you know. No. But he's hanging. He is hanging in there. God bless. Triple OG over there. He sure is. All right. This is our final one.
1:10:03If God were to send you a text on your phone right now, you still got a flip phone, Patty? I got that flip purple phone. I don't text. You don't text? No. I don't have a DM or whatever that stuff is. I don't do that stuff. Please. I can't take it if you had a DM. That would be nuts. Right? I'm just a phone girl. A regular phone. You talk. Landline. You talk to people. Yes. Okay. Are you a talker on the phone? Do you like to talk on the phone? I like to talk on the phone. So how do you stay connected with friends and family? Because if they call and I don't feel like talking, I'll say I'm getting a massage.
1:10:38I might tell a little white lie. Yeah, I don't like talking on the phone. Plus I'm saving my voice most of the time. So having conversation is not good for me. Wears you out. Yeah. Takes your voice away. Yeah. I can't believe you're going back in the studio. Oh, I have to. girl it's been so long since i've done an r &b album so what and most of it is done and what is the goal there like what do you is it just because it's on your spirit is it because something that should have been done many years ago i'm long overdue yeah and where do you hope that lands in the world like what do you make it's going to land a triple triple platinum that's where it's going to land girlfriend okay urge you do you have like plans for it to tour and like is it a whole everything i never stopped touring never ever stopped touring so i plan to do all that yeah yes while you're taking care of mr cuddles and doing your food business and doing everything you don't stop one thing because you have more things on your plate you continue to do it all yes so if god were to text you right now this is our final question if god were to text you right now even though you don't text you gotta text and it was god right and he texted you uh-huh What would it say?
1:11:56It would say, don't stop what you're doing, baby. Keep it up, because you're doing it well. That's what God would say. Here's to you, if I had a hand, I'd hold my glass. Don't let go of the dog. I got to hold the baby. Don't let go of the dog. You are doing it well, Miss LaBelle. Oh, thank you, honey. It was such an honor. I love you so much. I love you too. It was an honor to spend time. This was fun. Was it? Very much. Okay, good. I know you never stopped touring, but what about the Queens tour? Oh, my gosh. This is the second half of the Queens tour. Okay. We toured about two months ago. Now, who's on the tour for people who don't know?
1:12:28Here's the ladies that's on the tour. Stephanie Mills, Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan, and Patti Lobel. And we're doing this weekend also. This weekend? Yes. No, in Texas. I need to get to that show. I don't remember where I'm going. I just know I'm going. And this is the last three shows of the Queens tour. Wow. What has that experience been like? It's been wonderful, but you can't get a chance to watch them because we all have like 45 minutes and the next act goes right on and next goes on. So when you go there, you do your part and then you leave the building, go back to the hotel. But I sneak sometimes and I'll get there early to see Gladys and Steph.
1:13:17And we just have fun, but we never get a chance to chit chat because we're all right on behind each other and running. But it might be nice to have that. It is for four Black women to do what we do. And we do it like with no egos. No one's trying to outdo anyone. We just sing. Yeah. What is the key to that? I think you're all probably really secure. Because we're all secure in who we are. And there's no competition. None. And I would do it again. You would? And we might do it again. You need to. Yes, I think we will. You always talk, we always talk about how you poured into everybody. Who poured into you?
1:13:58Anna Simone. Really? Yes. Oh, please. She did. She would talk to me all the time about looking for the better. In other words, if I was drinking wine and they would bring it to me in a paper cup, she said, oh, no, darling, no, crystal for you. And since then, there's been no paper cups. Well, if Nina Simone said it. And she's serious. She was serious. She was my friend. She was your friend. We talked every two weeks. Wow. She would be in London or somewhere overseas, and she would just call me, and we would just talk. She said, you should find a man for me yet. I said, no, boo, nobody's worthy.
1:14:41For real, she was that girl. Just wonderful moments with her. And she was like, you need the finer things. Oh yeah, fluff up. But Nina, she outright just told me no plastic cups, no paper cups, crystal, daddy. I said, okay, and I've been doing crystal. This is crystal. Hey. I expect nothing else. To you, my dear. To you, Miss LaBelle. Daddy LaBelle in real life, in real life. Hi, this is Patti LaBelle in real life. Hey guys, thanks for watching.
