In short

Fat Joe and Jadakiss talk with rising rapper Kocky Ka about what “success” looks like in hip hop, staying focused, building a trustworthy team, and turning personal loss into music. They also discuss Joe’s major weight-loss journey and health habits, plus food and training talk.

Guests (backgrounds)

  • Kocky Ka: Brooklyn (East New York) rapper, 27, credits his father and mother for stability; says his song “Slow” reflects losing his dad suddenly and using the studio as therapy. He’s linked with Meek Mill through viral freestyles and says his style shifted from “ballsy” to melodic “ping” sounds.
  • Fat Joe: veteran NYC rapper; discusses decades in the industry and his own weight-loss.
  • Jadakiss: veteran NYC rapper; focuses on discipline, team loyalty, and real-world consequences.

Key claims

  • Success can’t be “cheated” without studio pain and consistency.
  • Your crew must share your vision or they can derail you.
  • Studio sessions should be honest; don’t gas artists into releasing bad music.
  • Joe’s weight loss came from consistent workouts and lifestyle changes (he mentions Zepbound/Zepic-style efforts).

Notable examples

  • Kocky Ka describes his dad’s death and writing “Proud of Me/Slow” themes about grief and anxiety.
  • He recalls Meek Mill tapping in after Kocky’s freestyles.
  • Joe tells a story about eating at Golden Corral “on purpose” and about losing weight from near 500 pounds.

What's up, man? Welcome to the couch, bro. You probably the youngest that made it to the couch.

4:13You know what I mean? We a global show, bro. We definitely represent New York. For sure. We wanted to have you on. Love, man. Let the people know what you're doing. Let them know how you rockin'. I want to know how you... Meek just reached out to you. How y 'all linked up. Basically, for me, like, when we first started, man, we just, you know, we're a fan of Meek, for me. Meek, favorite, one of the favorite rappers, man. Y 'all, you know, pioneers of this New York shit, for sure, man. Like, I grew up watching y 'all, man, for sure. Meek, he just tapped in, for me. You know, we just put in work, and he just tapped in, man.

4:49Like, you got it. Keep going. He always show love. Like, yo, anytime we post on, we was going viral freestyles, just throwing freestyles, throwing them out there. Like, I came in rapping, like, really ballsy, feel me? And then we switched it over to, like, that really, like, melodic, giving them that ping, feel me? That ping is barred up. Oh, man, it's crazy for me. I don't know. It's barred up. This ain't no fucking off. By the way, this the Joe and Jada show. It ain't no fucking lollipop in this bitch. This kid is the future. and I'm never wrong and so the game always love a big boy they done for heavy deed to Biggie Smalls to Big Pond, to Ross, Fat Joe the game love a big boy and us big boys even though I lost a lot of weight we got like a silent language that we cheer each other on and we just show man love first I see you I see you walking with not Beyonce, but fiance.

5:52She got the bags. She's smiling like she love life. And cocky car with her like this. Like, you know that guy? Come on, man. That guy. Yo, cocky car. This guy living the life by here. We just living, man. Come on, we just living, man. Yo! Come on, we just living. We just living, man Come on, man We just doing things you like to do, man And then I said Who is this guy? Right? And then I started listening to your music And I was like Oh, shit, we got one Slow, doesn't mean a lot, man And so, how's it feel to be young? I've seen this song, is that a true story About your pops? Break that down to us you was born in Brooklyn, raised in Brooklyn.

6:50Tell us about what made you write that song and so many people could relate to that. For sure. I came from Brooklyn, East New York. To be exact. That's a fact. It was good with my moms and my pops in my life. I was super blessed for that. You know how important your pop shit is in your life. Super important for me. We go from seeing a person in like a day. So like, damn, I don't see him no more. For me, like I'm in the crib. I'm one of the youngest of my mom in the park's house. For me, children, like I'm the youngest boy. For me, I'm still in the crib. For me, like, damn, like I'm there for me.

7:29Like, it's like, damn, like you wake up in the morning. You know them deaths like it's just be like sudden. Like you don't know that shit coming in. They ain't sick. They ain't in no hospital. Yeah, you just wake up in the morning. Shit just happened. He gone for me. Like I'm the only one in the crib, man. Like I see my pops take a glad breath. I tried to, yeah, yeah, I tried to carry them out the bed, feel me? My grandmones, like, came upstairs, feel me? It was wild. I live in a building. I got the biggest family in the hood, feel me? Like, came upstairs, feel me? Like, leave out the room, come back, he gone.

8:00I never lost nobody like that close before, feel me? It's like, damn, I bet. So that shit kind of hit hard, feel me? Hit OD, feel me? So I'm like, I bet, like, it's gold mode now. After that, we just put that shit in the pain, feel me? Put that shit in the music, man. And, you know, we don't really talk to nobody. I said, man, for me, we don't really talk to nobody. For me, we don't got nobody to talk to. So the studio was kind of like therapy, you think? When I listen to your music, man, it's all, how old are you? 27, man. It's so hard for a person your age to really reach down in the moment.

8:36And not really, you know, I know you like to spoil yourself, watches and clothes. but your music is like you're in the moment. You're right in the moment, and you talking that shit, especially the youth, they all dying, they all killing each other. They need to hear that, and they need that type of inspiration. See somebody like you who made it from the trenches, or who's making it, what made you just come so real? This ain't about bars, gimmick, this. Your shit's straight. you talking like we talking but we the OG's they switched over though from just straight bars the melodic pain with the scars in for sure is that from your dad or that just that was kind of like yeah like I ain't gonna lie to you like we was having fun before all this before the deaths I mean we just having fun we just you know New York we fall on what's the wave I mean the drill was the wave the the rapping the really ballsy like That was the wave, you feel me?

9:41And then we like, yo, like, get them what we really going through, you feel me? Like, we could talk about the other shit later, but let's get them really, like, what we really feeling, what we going through. And, for me, like, we try to, like, fit in with the sexy drill. Shout out Cash and my brothers, and shout out to them, man. We try to fit in with that. And we like, yo, bro, like, let's just be us. I mean, like, let's think bigger than New York. I mean, let's think New York. New York home all the time. New York always going to be home, but let's get with silent. Worldwide, everybody can feel, you feel me?

10:08and we just went with that and that shit started working for me like and we just took off man so what does it feel like when I remember my Uncle Dan damn I don't want to tell Dan's business but Dan was away for a little bit right and yo Jada stop stop this is my man yeah but Uncle Dan was away right I remember he comes back and I tell him I said yo it's a little different Uncle Dan I went to pick him up I said you know It's not the same. I'm famous now. We going to walk out of this courthouse and they going to be wilding because Flojo's number one. Right? I'm trying to let them know. Like, yo, this ain't, you know, your nephew that you went away last year.

10:54It's showing up. We came out. He was like, yo, what the fuck? And everybody chasing. What's that like for one day? I know you popular in your own hood. But to step out and now everybody knows you. what's that like? That shit different. Like it's different, super different. Like, yeah, we didn't have a buzz, but we was like, kind of like lit and puck with your motion. We had motion, but this motion different. I don't know how y 'all do it. I mean, like, wild motion. Oh, it's wild. I mean, I'm in a, I'm buying a car. I see somebody put me on the IG. I'm looking rough. You feel me? I'm on a side, short, so on socks.

11:30For me, one of this, man, I'm like, damn, it got me. But it's just wild. For me, like, it's, It's a blessing though, for me. Like, still, it's wild, but it's like, damn, like, they know who niggas is now, for me. I remember niggas, far niggas, for me. They know who niggas is. They know what I'm doing, for me. So, all right, we touching somebody, for me. That's what I'm saying. And I'll do, because I always worry about, like, you know, I used to coach at the Rocker. Right. There's some guys that should have made, what's the matter? Yo, you're not even letting me finish my sentence. I coach at the Rocker.

12:05There was some players. I'll give you one. My man, Abe Butter. I always felt like he should have been in the NBA. Abe Butter. But he had friends that misguided him. It was selling him the wrong thing. It was like, yo, you live in Harlem. You don't got to really be in college and all that. With you being young, just getting into the bag, how hard is it to keep solid people around you? Do you have a solid team around you that you think you could trust? For sure. For sure. Like, I definitely do. I feel like I definitely got a super solid team. Anybody around me, we got 20-plus years. I mean, I don't—you can't name nobody I know.

12:43Like, you got less than, for me, like, five years or 10, 15, 20-plus. I mean, like, and plus the person I'm with now, my guy, Old Gates, man, he's super, super solid, man, like, super solid. Like, he was kind of like big brother, like, big brother. Yo, I bet you're not going to do this. I did shoot on A-9, but you got to learn, but fuck it, let's do this. So I'm like, all right, get a chance to learn and actually it was major key for me, super major key, but definitely think I got a super core around, man, for sure. I like how humble you are. I appreciate it. You make hints, but you remain humble.

13:20Every time I speak to you, you got the same good in you. This is the first time I speak to him, I seen him, I said the big boy, I got to bring him into that. That's my man right there. He don't know. We got that underground. You know what I'm saying? I see him on a sedan, man. You know what I'm saying? He wanted us. Sign of quality control? Yeah, sure. Yeah, sure. Who's in your own? Yeah, DTE, man. No doubt. I'm poor. Just ownership, dude. Super. Super, super. I think it's definitely important for me. You put in all this work for me. It's like, I got to have sign for me. Sign for all the work we put in for me.

13:57At least, you know me? from overnights in the studio with me. We working, man. Something got to come out of that. Man, it's 30 years of doing this shit. Come on. You get three? I don't think this shit. You get three? Dizzy, B. Come on, man. You know, I always tell a story, man, because, you know, we was young, we was hot, right? Right. And so I got to think of, because you remind me a lot, your personality and your charisma, big punt. And I see you a lot, your videos. You got the 20 girls behind you. That's a big pun. Whoa, man. Right, man. We took a big boy, made him a sex symbol, right? Perfect.

14:33I see what you're doing out here. Glory. And I say to myself, I say, yo, man, I got to reach out. Let him know, you know, we appreciate what he's doing and just your approach. And so who's some of the guys you looked up to coming up in the game? First of all, that mean a lot for me. that's a fact I can't even honestly I don't look to y 'all too for sure coming to New York man like I wouldn't I looked up to Meek for sure Meek Millie for sure shout out bro I can't lie Big coming from Brooklyn like you said man Pun those are the guys we really heard growing up on the radio even now you still hit them on the radio to this day that shit just made that feel good music, feel me?

15:26You know, when you hear those type of songs, the summer coming, it's about to get lit. It's funny, you know what I mean? Like, for sure, you know what I mean? Like, it got crazy, man, for sure. So, it was definitely, it had an impact in my life, for sure. Yeah, my thing was, it was summers that we had the number one songs, but we would stay, like, everybody come honk the horn and they in the truss. Yo, it's there. We over here, and be like, nah. Studio. you got a right, you got a state focus, you got a this, and I'll be like yo, fine, and they coming through, and we just it's a lot of sacrifice right, right, right, right to be supreme, to be supremacy in this game, it's a lot of sacrificing and some people think, maybe they got lucky and they shortcut it, but some people feel like they ain't gotta go in there and put in that pain in that studio and all that I don't think you could cheat the success you know what's it like for you?

16:27what's your process of like alright I'm about to write the song about this or you just hear the beat and then tell me what to say what's your studio sessions like? sessions is like a party or? you know what's crazy? it's not even partying I feel like the party definitely motivates niggas though come on you ain't gonna lie if the females in there for me they gonna make niggas do runs that I never did before we just gonna get crazy in there I ain't gonna fart but yeah it's super motivation But now, usually a regular studio session is just me and like probably like three of my guys, two of my guys.

16:58It's not never too deep for me, like for me, like for me, like for me. Yeah, it's never too many people in here. I mean, yeah, I'm for y 'all. I watch this shit, you heard? But yeah, it's never too.

17:15Yo, I'm crying now, but yeah, man, like fly. Yeah, that's a fly. You a couple of your guys, an engineer. Yeah, yeah. It's super like, yeah, just me, man. Both quiet, dark, I'm in my feelings. I mean, that's probably why I'm the most vulnerable for me, myself in there, for me. So I'm like, yo, all right, but like, depending on the track, I'm like, yo, I need to be in here totally. And then if that feel good track, oh, yeah, all right. Everybody in, let me know how y 'all feel. I don't really like no y 'all smell around me. Like, let me know if you ain't fuck with this track or not, for me. For sure, super, super important.

17:49and you could think they ain't no yes man, but six times, like I remember they would invite me, right? So it would be an artist that we love and know. And they'd be like, yo, Joe, come in the studio, listen to my new album. See? And they like, no, no way. And their last album was a classic, but then they played the new album and I'm in the studio and the shit's straight garbage. And everybody in the studio, Yo, they mans are banging into the wall like it's dope and all that stuff. And you like, yo, like, Joe, what do you think? I'm like, I'm like real honest when it comes to the music. I'll try my best way to let you down in the nicest way.

18:33But if it ain't it to me, I'm not going to sit here and do that. And I watched too many sessions where they gassing dudes up, jumping. Like, I couldn't believe this shit. It happened to me a bunch of times in my life. That ever happened to you? each his own bottle patrol. Shut up, man. This motherfucker. You know what I'm saying? Each his own bottle. I mean, you got the power to put out music whenever you want. Yeah, for sure, for sure. I let him listen to it. Mainly, like, anything I send to my girl on the team, like, they fuck with it, you know what I mean? She's like, all right, bet. See a little more.

19:14He's like, yo, let's do it. Matter of fact, you just did that? Let's put it out tomorrow, next week. Tell me on the highest band of those. Yeah, man. What's up with the girls, man? They loving you because I heard you in there. They're like, listen, man. Nah, you don't want to. It's not getting into the devil shit. You don't want to talk this shit. You trying to get into the truth. I'm going to shut it. Nah, nah, nah. Is fiance your girl? Nah. It's fiance. Yo, shut up, Zona. For sure. She ain't beyond. Shut up, Zona. I ain't doing you. Nah, we just. Yo, listen, man. We just having fun, man. That's for me.

19:48Whoa, they doing that for me? Like, we just having fun, man. We working. We focus. Focus, baby. You focus. Seek the kingdom. When it's ever too much, just seek the kingdom. Seek the kingdom. No mistakes, man. Seek the kingdom. Yo, man. Seek the kingdom, man. We got to be careful out here. We got to seek the kingdom. That's true. Shit hard. It's hard, man. Yeah. This shit is high school, you heard? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, shit.

20:24You got to sink the cake, though. I'm crying, man. You know what's a bar that always resonates when it comes to that to me is Wild Wild Thoughts. Khaled's song, Wild Wild Thoughts. And Bryce Tiller goes, I probably shouldn't be around you. Like, that shit hits me, like, With a hard pull. But you know you ain't supposed to be around. That's a fact, dude. No, this is a problem. That's when you're having wild thoughts. Wild, wild, wild thoughts. Wild, wild, wild. Motherfucker. Spacing to be around you. That's a fact. Yeah. Wild thoughts. Wild thoughts, man. What's your plans for the next five years?

21:10Where you want yourself to be? Where you want your label to be? Where you want to be doing? Basically, man, we want to be one of the, like, known for one of the hardest working cars in the game, man. For me, like, y 'all still around. For me, I want to be like this. For me, like, still want to be, you know, coming from New York, it's hard. Like, we ain't really have nobody, like, really, like, stick around in the midst. It's really, like, a boogie in the way. Like, for me, like, I want to be one of them cars like, yo, think of New York. You think about, all right, Kyle, you know, he with those goods.

21:40To me, like, yeah, being more consistent. Yeah, I want to be able to help somebody else the same way somebody helped me, you feel me? Like, speaking them through that verse to me, like, I'm going to pay with y 'all, feel me? Like, you do it. Yeah, yeah. You do it. Super emotions. Hell, I mean. Come on, man. I see your future very, very bright. You keep the right people and the right team around you. And look, I'm old, and I'm still dusting dudes off. Come on. I still got one or two left. That's right. That's right. You know, I came up with a wild bunch of guys, man. And sometimes, this is the advice I'm giving you and everybody else who's watching.

22:23Sometimes your vision of you, your team might not, you know, your boys might not see the same thing for you. And you might have a boy that's crazy, right? Right. He want to shoot up Madison Square Garden while you performing. I'm not thinking about that. He don't give a fuck. His father been to jail his whole life. His brothers. He's trying to prove some shit that you like. Yo, I'm trying to get to the Grammys. I'm trying to get on another level. And sometimes because they don't have the same goals as you. Or the same vision as you. They could fuck the whole shit up. Trust me. It happened to me.

23:04That shit. I'm going to just have it. Maybe a couple of days ago. That's wild. So you got to stay away from that. yeah that shit will just happen that's why oh you can't have that you know what I'm saying you gotta really figure it out and you gotta tell them listen my brothers I love you please y 'all wanna see me do good because I might you know I'm gonna spin back make sure everybody's straight but let me go they almost gotta look at you like the kid that might be going to the league because what happens is some of these guys they don't give a fuck and guess what it could be the skinniest guy in the world it could be your man 80 pounds flat shoot up the claw they gonna say cocky cock the skinniest nigga like this and they gonna be on the news rapper cocky cock and you like yo what the fuck they always seem to find the famous one in the crew it's just historically works like that.

24:10So, you know, you got to start talking up the wall, because we love them. Because, you know, with me, I say I paid for maybe a hundred funerals in my life channel for the whole hood. And then I be thinking about... I pay for close to that. Damn. True story, huh? You told me some foul shit the other day. Yo, Jada, man, I went home, I watched the shit. You said the man went outside to smoke a cigarette and the dude jumped off the roof and landed on them. That happened in Y.A. That's sick. That really happened. Wow. Crazy. When outside Newport, somebody landed on both of them dead. I don't know what kind of karma.

24:53I don't know what somebody did to somebody, but what's the chances of going outside having a smoke in a human? In a human? That's crazy. Crazy. Wow. I did it. That's crazy. I went home, I watched the episode, I see, yo, this shit. I said, is it real? Well, Jadis said, because this shit, I heard it every day. I never heard of that one. That's different. Wild, baby. Home of the brave. The crazy shit is when I see a young, talented brother like you, that's what I worry about. About your team going true. You know what happened to me was, I can't lie to you, One day we running, you know what I'm saying?

25:37So we come from the street. We tough guys in the street. Then I get in the game. Everybody who come home from jail for 10, 15 years, 20 years, they coming home first day, reporting for duty, sir. Reporting for duty, sir. They were gone. Jingo, who did 20 in the box, reporting for duty, sir. Right? And then one day I got a show in Madison Square Garden. I never forget. And I sit in the green room. I sit in the back. And, you know, I'm top of the game. And I sit on a ledge. And I look at everybody with me. Now, a lot of these, half of them, you know, really grew up with me since we was kids and teenagers.

26:19Even though they're dangerous, I grew up with them since then. But I look at that room. and I said, Joe, if somebody throw a glizzy at you in this Madison Square Garden...

This week on the podcast, I'm sitting down with Divergent author Veronica Roth to talk about her sprawling new novel, Seek the Traitor's Son. It's a sci-fi fantasy epic about two protagonists on opposite sides of a war and a prophecy neither of them wanted. My first book was Divergent. And when that came out, like, because it was so popular, I think it attracted like mostly positivity, but the negativity I sucked in like a sponge.

36:52And I think it was like critiques of things I liked when I was like, you know, I was 23 and I wrote this book and it had all my like dorky little cheesy or maybe unrealistic loves in it. And I started to feel a lot of shame about those things. And so for the rest of my career, I steered away from those little things that like make you feel pleasure when you read. But I also was like saying no to these parts of myself that I then was like, screw it. So that's this book.
