In short

Keith Sweat discusses the state of modern R&B, the rise of Afrobeats as “new R&B,” and his songwriting/business legacy behind classic hits.

Guests

Keith Sweat (legendary R&B singer/songwriter and businessman; discussed as a shrewd negotiator and catalog owner). Joe “Jaden Kiss” (host/guest; longtime fan and collaborator in the R&B/Hip-Hop world; shares personal stories, including meeting Keith Sweat at a Holiday Inn/Route 4 area and casino anecdotes). Also referenced: Gerald LeVert (Joe Crack the Dawn), Johnny Gill, Eddie Levert, Mark (from The Verve), Heavy D, LL Cool J, J. G., and others as influences/peers.

Key claims

Modern R&B has shifted toward rap-style aggression and explicitness, losing the “calming”/romantic function of classic R&B. Afrobeats restores sensual, feel-good energy. Keith Sweat’s success is tied to both musical talent and careful contracts/negotiation.

Notable examples

“Nobody” (millennial tour singalong), “Make It Last Forever,” “Right in the Wrong Way,” “Freak Me,” “Lose Control,” “Just Got Paid,” “Let’s Chill,” “Share My World” (Dru Hill), “Cut Close,” and LSG hits. Keith tells PPP/contract negotiation stories and warns not to sign without attorneys.

One of the flyest niggas ever in the world.

3:57That's fucking right. Ladies and gentlemen, without further ado, make some noise for our guests today. Keep swag.

4:08What up, what up, what up, what up, baby? What up? What's up, brother? How you doing, baby? Long time no see, man. Yeah, you know, you know. You know how we used to do it. That's some history. We gonna get into that, yeah. Nah, I want to hear that off-rip. Like, you was telling me a story behind the scenes. Before we even go corporate style, Young Kiss, I'm in the studio on Bad Boy. They working on a Levert Sweat and Gil album. Hello. I was pinning some bars, as I was telling you earlier. You know what I mean? For somebody. A dice game breaks out. My brother right here. You know how that go, Joe?

4:45Keith and Joe got the bank. Now, I'm like, Oh yeah, him give me some of this R &B money tonight, baby. If I don't finish the soul, I'm going home with some rap. They sleep on R &B. They think you R &B, you might be. They got that shit on silk linen. They and the whole student, everybody. Bunny rabbits. Rabbits is the whole junior mafia. We don't lie. You ain't feel sorry for these guys you took all their money? smoke them that's that Harlem shit huh that's what their money is there I'll talk to y 'all later that's a fact it is I'll never forget it dog you can't tell me I wasn't going home I didn't even care if I finished the session I got some money from Gerald and Keith today psych they aired me I'm talking about to the bones gristle man yeah the whole studio though we could He cleaned the damn whole stew out.

5:50So you've been a gambler your whole life? You was always nice and shooting dice? Yeah, I'm good at that. You know, I used to tell, when I used to go on tour and go to casinos, I used to tell everybody bet on me. Everybody made money. Who used to bet against? One of the R &B singers at the tour or just at the casino? I'm good at the crap table, casino. I'm good. I'm good. That's crazy. I remember when I wasn't talking to Jay-Z or OG Juan, I go down to Atlantic City with Chris Gotti. And, you know, I don't gamble for nothing. He does. I caught beginner's luck. I was rolling for like an hour straight.

6:29It was like seven. We just kept winning. That boy Juan couldn't bet. He's on the other table. He looks sick like a punk. He like, damn, this nigga got the roll of a lifetime. I mean, I was literally on there for like an hour. Listen, one thing that's crazy about the casino, when you win, they don't want to give you your money, huh? No, they don't want to. They don't want to give you your money. They want to comp anything. I had the biggest rooms than ever at the Mandalay Bay because they would comp, comp, comp, comp, comp. They fucked up with me. One time they comped me the biggest suite. It's the only time my grandmother ever left the Bronx.

7:05She never left the block in like 80-something years. I gasped her to go to Atlantic City with me. She looking out the window like it's marshes. She couldn't believe it was so beautiful. She never been in the shit. So we in there them they was sending me lobsters steaks all type of shit. I don't know nobody they kept coming up to the room. You ready to go downstairs Mr. Joe? I was like no. Chilling we eating lobsters. We champagne and everything they be like Mr. Joe you ready to come down to the end? I was like man I might have played a couple of slots on them and broke out. Like they They lost with me.

7:40I'm telling you that. That's like an all-you-can-eat buffet. They lost. Sweat, man. Let me tell you something. You're one of my idols. You're one of my biggest inspirations. You know, I'm thinking driving down here. Well, passenger down here in May's car. And I'm just thinking, like, I remember when I fell in love with your music. I never even thought I would meet you in my life. Like, just to meet you. You know what I'm saying? And the fact that we're friends, you know, is surreal to me. Who's like that for you? Like, you know I love Keith Sweat. I bring you to every party. I think, you know, who's like that for you that was out before you that you can't believe you became cool with or you love like that?

8:29There was a few people, J.G., J. Johnny Gill. You know, when I met Gerald, you know what I'm saying? And it was like Eddie Levert when I met them. Eddie Levert. You know, I grew up listening, you know, Casanova. Casanova was one of our joints. That's a fact. You know what I mean? You know me, I ain't never been friends. You know, that's my all of them shit. That's my all of them shit right here. You can't believe you got the worst.

8:56So when I first came out, like everybody used to go to the holiday, you know, Jersey, full. Roof full. In a roof full. So, you know, that's why you spend a lot of time when I had to hear reggae. God damn. You know, you take the girl over to Route 4. So that's how I met LaVert, not Mark. I met Mark. You met him at Route 4? Yeah, at the Holiday Inn. The Holiday Inn, they used to be at Route 4, right? I made the new one, by the way. Everybody used to go with that one back in the day. You know what I'm saying? It's like, you know, right off the turnpike, boom. Right there. So that's where I met Mark at.

9:30They was standing there, and they had a show at Del Palo. and I went to the machine because I came out of the room and went to the snack machine to get a little sudden. And I said, oh man. That was what, I want to have just dropped. It just had came out. I said, oh man, damn, you Mark from the Verve. He said, yeah. And he said, you know, you know Mark had the dark shades on. You know how Mark was. He had got dark shades on. He said, yeah, I'm Keith Sweat. He said, Keith Sweat, that name sound familiar. Yeah, I got this little record I called out Warner. He said, oh shit, that's Joe Fravor record.

10:02we got a show at the Apollo tonight with the whispers. He said, you should come by. So I came by. That was my first time meeting Gerald and, you know, Sean and all them. So you know what I'm saying? And then once we met each other, we became the best of friends. We became like brothers and, you know, because I never thought, you know, I was big friends of the OJs and the Verso. We used to go to Cleveland all the time and stay at the house and everything. So for them, that was Johnny and him was like, that's why I put the LSG thing together. Cause they were all my, what was my two favorites. Wow.

10:36I didn't know that. But Johnny killed Apollo though. For you, when you say you went and pulled up on him at the Apollo for me, when I think of Apollo, I'm not sure if I turned, I was even turning 11. I was even 12 or 13. And I'm like, it's for my birthday. I don't know what I asked for for that particular birthday. But you ended up at the Apollo. My mom and my dad, for you suckers that didn't go off with two parents and you think it's a bad thing, they took me to the Apollo. It's U, Heavy D, and LL. It was the best show of mine, though. I'm like, what am I going to do with a concert? My mom's right here, my pop's right here.

11:23this shit was amazing dog you killed it left a lifetime memory on me forever at the Apollo shit was incredible I would never forget the rip it was crazy because my first tour was with Heavy D and the boys Salt and Pepper and myself that was my first tour you know shout out to Salt and Pepper they just won the award in the Hall of Fame Yes, yes, yeah. I was so proud of them. You know, let me tell you something. I did some shows with Salt-N-Pepa and the women. It's 99. It definitely ain't Fat Joe fans at that show because the women is 99 % come out. I mean, there is no men. And the whole audience is just women.

12:09Three guys went up in there to hear Flo's up. You know what I'm saying? So Salt-N-Pepa, man, I'm so proud of them. We love them, man. And, you know, Heavy D, that's another one of my idols. You know, I got to be real cool with Have Heavis come to Miami and hang out with us. I remember the first time I met him, same situation like a Levert. I'm at Tavern on the Green. They were throwing them ill parties. And I'm using the restroom and the door open and somebody going, you got to flow, Joe. You got to. I turned around and fucking Have Heavis almost pissed on myself. I couldn't fucking believe it.

12:45I was like, yo, Have is my fucking idol, man. He walked in and we got cool and we went to eat after that. And I was just like, yo, heavy D. Like to me, that was like. That was that era, man. That was the best era. You know, we had Mike Epps on here and Mike Epps gave, I told him, what's your top five comedians? He ain't mentioned Dave Chappelle. His excuse for not mentioning it was right on. Because he says, you know, me and Chappelle, the same era. I got to mention Richard Pryor. I got to mention the old school guys that was before us who inspired us. That's how I feel. I could sit here and say Nas, Jay-Z, but we all from the same era.

13:27When they asked me, I got to say LL, KRS. You know, that's that era before us. These are guys we used to look at when we didn't even think we would ever be a rapper or be successful. So, you know, when I'm at Heavy D, man, I used to try to dance like Heavy D. I still try to dress like Heavy D. Today, I'm Gerald LaVert, though. Rest in peace. I heard some stories about Gerald Osborne. He had the ladies, man. Gerald was like, girl, you know ain't nothing I won't do for you. The guys ain't giving it up like that no more. They're not singing to the women. How do you feel about the state of R &B? Is it even the state?

14:09I feel like they trying to do away with the kind of music we was raised and grew up on. The texture of like what I say about R &B now is some of the R &B artists they want to rap they want to be rappers because you know my attitude is R &B is supposed to be full play like when you breaking up making up with your girl you want to play something fly you know because if you arguing screaming I'm a motherfucker fuck you and all that then you put an R &B record on it the R &B record saying the same thing you done had more confusion the R &B record cursing at all of y 'all too You know what I'm saying?

14:47So the R &B record is supposed to calm you down. Listen, baby, I can't say what I want to say to you, so I'm going to let this record say it. You know what I'm saying? So we need to calm this shit down, have a real conversation. Because if you, nigga, I'm going to fuck you and hit me over the head and the R &B record is talking about all that, you're like, yo, let's get, it's a fight. It's still a fight. Let me tell you something, this shit got out of the head about two years ago. so I'm used to listening to LL doing it and doing it well doing you know the guy and girl you know I need love or you're all shorty I need you they start to fuck me nigga pistol with me while I'm fucked with the dick like a glorilla and a money bag or something like they started I'm like what the fuck it's going on pistol with me and choke me nigga and spit in my face when you this this I'll hold your dick I'll hold your dick Y-U-P?

15:45I'm like, yo, this shit out of control. Like, this ain't doing it well. This ain't not, this shit. I'm like, yo, this is the new this the new Bonnie and Clyde? No, no. No, I'm dead serious. You know that this ain't good. I can't do that because he's right. No, I'm right. It's a better way to describe it. Pissed with me, nigga. You took me. I'm like, yo. But that's what they said. I am confused. You know the emoji, your head blow? I'm like, yo, this is crazy. And then they sampling my shit. It turned into that, Kiss. And they sampling my shit and saying the same shit on my shit.

16:30I'm like, oh, my shit wasn't meant to be that. That's a fact, man. Don't do that to that classic material. Let me tell you something. Keith Sweater, Jaded Kiss, I know this right now. They got something in common. They got like the same humor. I sent him to Keith shit. He said, yeah, no problem, Joe. Send it over because his people were trying to front. But I knew once I'd get Keith on the phone. Was it you I was talking to? He was like, well, you know. I said, OK, don't worry. You'll get a phone call. Fucking Keith Sweat. Call that motherfucker in two minutes. I'm like, that's Joe. Crap. We cleared it.

17:02He said, send me this song, Joe. I sent it to him. I said, god damn, you jacked my whole fucking song, nigga. You're singing every word of mine, Joe. this gonna cost you right here I said yo sweat whatever the fuck you want you got it baby but um and cause we had the best of the best coming on this show and giving that was one of the greatest answers to any question I have asked where you say yo the R &B is the foreplay it's the instinct you know you can't everything can't be fucked you that was the perfect sweat man man, let me tell you something. You're my theme song, man, for my life. That Nobody, that, I used to drive because I was scared to fly.

17:47And you know when you, when you meet your wife for the first time and you get that song, we have everybody dizzy in the Lexus. We keep playing Nobody 10 ,000 times from fucking the Bronx to Miami. 24 hour drive. Nobody, baby. is that the biggest song you ever put out or you got a bigger one then make it last and nobody are the biggest you know maybe twisted make nobody make it last the make it last twisted is dead too it ain't my favorite all of them shits is forever oh no I did the 20th anniversary you was there lean back and he could have did whatever I said nah Keith I wanted him to come out the side and go girl I've been thinking about him.

18:37Oh, damn. Yo, that shit crazy. The way you started that record, girl, like, how do you get that shit right on time? They ain't got pro-tools there. He came in lit. It was perfect. They ain't got no pro-tools. That shit start, girl, I mean, that shit take off immediately. Genius is an understatement. Facts. Let's not even talk about Keith Sweat. Let's talk about the songs you wrote because people don't really understand all the hit records you've written for everybody else. And you gotta be very unselfish to give other artists smash hit records. Yeah, I wrote Freak Me. Freak Me, baby. Lose Control.

19:23When me and you up and down. Let them stop. Tell them a couple more. No, no, but you gotta say it and give them a little bar because some of these people, they slow. Speak slow for them. Talk slow, man. Let me get it. Let me lick you up and down. See you say you stop. Boom, boom, boom, boom. He knows. What else? Freak me, baby. He wrote Mad Shit. Just got paid. Oh, my God. Just got paid. Friday night. Bah! Who that? Johnny Kemp, right? Johnny Kemp. I wrote that with Teddy. Let's chill. I wrote with Teddy and Bernard Bass. Let's chill. I know that. I know that because somebody said they cleared it.

20:09They had to stop by Keith's sweat office. I knew he wrote Let's Chill. Let's chill. Wow, Let's Chill. Immature. Extra, extra. Read all about it. Dang, I wrote a lot. No, you. LSG. You wrote all that LSG. Half of the LSG album. Yeah, I wrote half of the LSG album. I wrote all my hits. you know what I'm saying? How? All right. No, no, no. It's very, very important. I wrote on Drew Hill first album. What you wrote for Drew Hill? Share My World. Oh, shit! Fendi, very underestimated Drew Hill. They got bomb classics. I think Cisco dancing, they're doing all that shit, you know, throw them off for the, you know.

27:23Keith Sweat, you're a very shrewd businessman. I heard some stories about you behind the scenes. Is it you or is it? No, no, it's Keith Sweat. You're a good businessman, obviously, if he got you. But it's Keith Sweat. Did you go through a lot of bullshit early to learn, you know, to get shit tightened up? I think he was smart. Did he be very stern or you came in? I went through a little bullshit. Everybody. Not, not, not what everybody. Not raping you records. Nah, nah. I wouldn't. Nah, I wouldn't. I can't throw the flag. Yo, we had a meeting the other day. He said. I really went through that.

28:04Jadakiss was like, this feels like all over again. I said, man, this guy's traumatized. This guy, 30 years later, they did some shit to these dudes. I was like, yo, Jadakiss, calm down. Calm down. I thought the real gangsters. This ain't that and that ain't this. I thought the real gangsters kill you, rob you, all that. I never knew they had contract gangsters. I've never got robbed. John Gotti's of contracts. Tons of jury, whatever you want to name, mountains of money. What's his name? Ain't that nigga pull out a gun on me and robbed me. Dump suit niggas, them accountants. What's the guy? The lawyers are robbing me now.

28:41No, the nigga that you see, they told you, what's his name? Jelly Bean. Yeah. Oh, he robbed me for like 20 million. Yeah. He came to me on the Latino shit. Yo, we Latino. I'ma watch your back, yo. Yeah. Sign your publishing. I'll take care of you. I've discovered Madonna. That nigga raping you records. He robbed me for like 15 years. You know how I found out? I did a soundtrack. for a movie. And to me, at the time, it was big money. I was like, yo, I need$150. You know, I'm on fire. I'm thinking I can't, you know, I come for$500 a show. Right. I'm getting them for$150. They said, hold up, you know, your publisher, he wants$350.

29:19I said, who, what? It was like, yeah, Jelly Bean Bonita is one to allow you to be on his soundtrack. He wants$350. I think I'm robbing him for$150. That's when I was saying, oh no, we got to find this dude. Because you know, he wasn't in the same And it was in Malibu and all that. We had to catch him outside of the war show. It'd be like, your brother, the gig's up. These lawyers know both parties. So they got their friends over here. They act like they your friend over there. So they put these little things in the contract that, you know, because they supposed to have watch your back. I got two lawyers going after.

29:58I'm going to put it right there. I'm going to get that ass though. Because they slick. so I just gotta you know be slick so I gotta get that they robbing me now the lawyers I got some allegedly I don't know if I can say that I got some serious how about the Knicks I got some serious friends who thank you I got some serious friends and I don't care if we in dinner or whatever these fucking lawyers but I never understood that I felt like you do your job I pay you this and this. Right now, I'm like, these fucking lawyers. Like, yo, these lawyers. So you're going through the same thing I'm going through right now.

30:39They're the biggest crooks I've ever seen in my life. But, you know, some of them, when they're doing what they're doing, you know, they're going to lose their license because they really. Man, I don't know about that shit. Nah, they're going to. They got to do a lot to lose their license. What I'm telling you is, like, if you doing things knowing you're doing things and you catch them, you know what I'm saying? it's like if they're representing both parties. We caught this one nigga 20 times, Keith, he still ain't get fired. Well, let me tell you, half of the time they represent both parties, but you don't know they represent both parties.

31:11You know what I'm saying? Because they finagling in the contract where you don't know they represent this party and that party, so they can't be serving your best interest. And their job is to serve your best interest. Right? And if you go to the court and say they didn't have my best interest at heart and they finagled because they were friends over here and they didn't serve my best interest, half of the time if you go to the right, get the right judge and go to the right place, because a lot of times they put in the contract, we will only settle this in this state or this whatever. It ain't powerful.

31:41Right. So basically what it is if you're doing business in any state, whether the land or whatever, if that business is being done in that particular state, you can sue in that particular state. You know, all that shit about we got to go to Connecticut to settle and all that. Fuck that. These guys, man, Let me tell you something. I could tell you guys, one million percent. You need an attorney. Don't sign no paper without an attorney. But these guys are cool. Let's just say they get paid well. They want the bag. We said don't sign a paper without an attorney. Yeah, I won't sign a paper without an attorney.

32:15Even if you sign an attorney, you better check. Another attorney. The attorney attorney. Attorney for an attorney. Right. Did you hear B-I? I got lawyers watching lawyers. It's the truth. No, you got it. Because the attorney, half these attorneys are friends with these record companies and whatever. So they, boy. So you got to have an attorney watch the attorney. You can't have this. Like, you have to have an attorney who don't know this attorney to be this attorney. What do you got to do now? After getting robbed 50 ,000 times. Julius is crook. I got a girl. She's been my attorney maybe 10 years.

32:54and everybody I work with, they're like, yo, you need a bigger time attorney. You need this. And I said, listen, she be somebody that's for you. Know you and don't rob and she's smart and I'm fucking with her. Right. And every attorney, you know, try to have a meeting with me. Joe, you know, I'm like, bro, I've been through them fast talking niggas. I'm good. Let me stay with my girl. She watched my back. She may be a little bit slower than I'm being in like in speed. But she got your best. She's a mother. Oh, no, she, she, She not playing with it. But these other guys, you use them for anything.

33:28Oh, my God, I'm dizzy. These niggas said, happy new year. They gave me a bill. No, if I tell you, matter of fact, when we get off the air, I'm going to tell you this lawyer bill. You going to smoke 40 blunts for me. You and K going to roll them shits up and smoke 36 therapy blunts. You going to be like, give me the Hubonic chronic. I can't be 55 paying this shit. I'm supposed to be on my retirement gatherings. You're supposed to be looking like Gerald LeBert. They're trying to wipe me out. Look, look, look. It's the least I can do. They get mad at me. Be like, you spent too much money on clothes.

34:06I'm saying, fuck you. I'm working for this fucking money. I'm going to be fly till I die. Like, look at your old Keefe. You look fucking amazing. Thank you, my brother. And I tell him every time I FaceTime you,

34:23I tell him all the time every time I FaceTime Keith he on a fucking machine running 30 miles but out you think you work out you call Keith sweat anytime in the morning nigga like the incredible ho he's gone bro in the fucking amp he don't jog on a trail he ain't walking he gone all systems go that's why he look great movement is medicine now you tapping in the afro beats what's going on with that Yeah, that's the new R &B, baby. I can feel that. I feel the new R &B because, you know, the R &B had changed so much. I just wanted something that made you feel good, that made you, you know, because Afrobeat got that.

35:03Yeah, it got that whole vibe, you know, no matter where you at, out the country, in the country, you're like, oh, shit, that shit? It feels like, girl, don't stop me, love. So that whole Afrobeat thing got a whole vibe to it. So that's what made me tap into that because, you know, I always love Afrobeat. I always love it. But the music is sensual. It's sexy, sensual. And, you know, it just says all the right things. So that's why I tap into it. I always love this, though. It just feels like it should be me. Me too. You know, Africa's so big. I always knew that shit was going to blow on another level when I'm out there.

35:42I thought you was about to say Afrobeat started in the Bronx.

35:51We might have... No, shit. Hold up. No, hold up. No, don't co-sign that shit. Let me explain something. We might have more Africans... Definitely. ...in the fucking Bronx... ...than anywhere else. ...than Africa. I wouldn't say Africa, but the Bronx is African mania. like we got Africans all over African mania I'm not saying African American straight people from Ghana Garbone from fucking Zamonga they in that motherfucking the Bronx there are no more Puerto Ricans in the Bronx it's all in that it's Africa you know how we like tours right mmhmm he got the R &B lovers to all come you know how we like going look who he got look who's on the bill Joe Drew Hill genuine cut close.

36:45Cut close. That's crazy. You wrote that shit, huh? Get up on it. That's one of the greatest. That's classic. Yo, cut close. This is what I was asking you before the man detoured me. The man detoured me to Africa, man. Let me tell you something. Creating music is something you got to be born with. how did you know the woman to put on the duets with you like they just as good as you bro what was her name Athena? Athena Cage let's give it up for Athena Cage yo man like how did you pick cause all these girls singing back to you it was just perfection every one perfection perfection. Everything when you come in, I like the way you had that.

37:44You thought they'd kill that shit. You come in, real freaky, baby.

37:52But how do you pick the perfect people to like going in the studio, listening to them sing, seeing if, you know, if I say sing this, seeing if they can follow my lead on stuff. Because, you know, So, like, if you can't, if you having a hard time riffing on some shit that I'm giving you, like, you ain't the one. But if you get, ooh. When I heard her, her wrist was so, like, oh, my God, so incredible that I'm like, okay, I can write anything for this girl. You know what I mean? Yes. So when I came up with, if you really, really want it. And she said, I like it when you get real big. You know? You know what I'm saying?

38:37So she made me want to sing it like that. I like it, girl. Win the week. So she made me want to sing it like that. You know what I'm saying? Girl, freaky, baby. No. What's talking that shit? I step on stage. Girl, scream like I'm Keith. You ever mention how many fucking hip-hop records? Your man, Drake, I'm a light-skinned Keith Sweat. I mean, how many rappers done mentioned Keith Sweat and they songs and all that. And how you feel about that when you hear the record and they talking that Keith Sweat shit? I mean, it's like, it just showed me the generations that I've touched. You know, like when I was talking to somebody, they was telling me I didn't touch the mamas.

39:18No, no, I'm going to tell you something. The daughters, the little kids, the little kids. I'm going to tell you something because I watch everything you do. You popped out in a play show where the oldest person was 23, 25. And broke the bill. And they sung. every fucking word. Even Fat Joe, your number one fan, wouldn't be able to bet. If we had to do hard rock bets, there's no way I would have said every 23-year-old would know every single key sweat word. It's impossible. The whole stadium starts singing every fucking word. Like, that got to feel amazing, bro. That shit was crazy because when I went on the stage, I was supposed to hit, sing Nobody, too.

40:00I was supposed to be a special guest and come on and sing Make It Last Forever and nobody. But when I got there, Ply, I said, yo, I already do right in the wrong way, right? Right in the wrong way. So I think I was supposed to come on before Ply. And he said, nah, you need to come on with me. So he does right in the wrong way at the end of the song. So he said, yo, this could not be no better situation. So when he started right in the wrong way, I came out. You know what I'm saying? and that's when they went crazy. Then I went in to make it last, right? And I knew this was the millennial tour and I was supposed to go into nobody.

40:40They said, no, no, no. We can't let him do nobody because if he do nobody, there won't be no more show. Yeah. So they made me stop. You be careful who the fuck you bring out on your fucking little show. Because they will body that bitch. You bring the wrong guy out? I told a story. I'll tell it again. Fuck it, man. You know, somebody. Nah, because it's legendary. You know, one of my favorites also is Elder Barge. I'm trying to believe it on my birthday maybe 10 years in a row. One year I had him. We had a private plane for him, everything. Swiss beat was going to drive him up. Motherfucker ain't show up.

41:17You know, the barge, he get missing. So one day I'm doing a show with Dave Chappelle. You was with me that day. Rest in peace, Clark Kent. Yo, a man hit me out of the clear blue sky. I said, yo, I'm in town. I said, pull up the Madison Square Garden. Let's throw them coming up. And I got him. He was, ooh. And I like the whole garden was singing that shit. That shit, you be careful who you bring on stage because they'll rip that shit down. Legendary on you. But yeah, that's what happened. You know, Keith Swank, I'm going to tell a story. I don't know if it's private and we'll cut it, right? but um he gets scared when I say some shit but I remember it was COVID and somebody canceled a show I don't know if it was Essence Fest or some festival shit and I happened to be with you when you started politicking that money you was like I know you got the PPP nigga I know you did I was like yo you think you know numbers I was dizzy with keep serving hold up Joe yeah you got that PPP loan homeboy was gonna charge you this and this and that this is last minute I don't know if I feel like going out there you know this man you caught these dudes for so much money out there where was it had to be New Orleans she jazz some shit yo I heard you I said yo I never seen nobody negotiate like that like you a hell of a fucking negotiate yeah I mean cause well you know your worth and I know numbers I'm like yo I know you got that PPP loan nah I was there and I said I know you got it I know what you got you know what I'm saying it's public knowledge you knew what he got too I was standing you was like yo I know what you got on the PPP loan you gotta spend that otherwise it's illegal I know what you was giving who was it Frankie Beverly somebody was supposed to do that shit because you know because all that because a lot of people don't know all that is public knowledge So you can go and see what everybody got.

43:25You know what I'm saying? So if you don't know that, you're not going to go and look and see what everybody got. So I know what you got. It's not tax deductible. You ain't got to pay. Give up no tax. Get that up, man. You know, so spend that money. That was the coldest shit. That was the coldest shit I ever seen in my life. Business negotiation. Yo, kiss. He told the promoter that? Yes. That's hard. He's showing the promoter, yo, you got one point something. Not 10 million. You got 10 million PPP. You got to spend that shit or you go to jail, my brother. This is Keith Sweat telling him. So Frankie Beverly got sick of something last minute.

44:03Two days to the show, they want Keith Sweat. Keith Sweat start telling him, you got this to PPP. You paid this for the venue. I know Frankie Beverly. I do the shows with him. He ain't moving without 450 or four. He was breaking his shit. Had his whole shit down. What? Scientifically. I'm like sitting there like, yo, I ain't know people can do. And he got him too. Keith got him. That's when I knew. I said, I always knew you was a smart businessman. But that's when I said, oh, no, this guy here. God forbid you negotiate with Keith. You're not beating Keith Sweat. Not in the negotiation. It's impossible.

44:40When is it for R &B lovers? It starts in February. The first year of February 13th. Oh, right. Before Valentine's Day. I think, yeah. I believe it's February 13th, but for those that want to know, you can go to keysweat.com. You know what I'm saying? Buy my bags, my candles. He definitely got the luxury lining bags. He candles. That's crazy. And I know they going out there, man. They going to be using that Rewind too. You know what I'm saying? This shit right here. Yeah. Why be 53 when you - You ain't got me on none of them. Why you ain't got me on none of them boxes, man? Man, you definitely told me that.

45:14I'm trying to politic. Nah, nah. He told me he called me, right? Hold up. Fly. Get him.

45:22Fat Joe:Get him. He told me he called me. I said, man, Joe, you ain't telling me you ain't calling me about that. I did call you, man. I did call you. He hit me up like, yo, Joe, you fucked up, man. I sell more boxes than that. I believe it. I said, I'm going to make it last forever, man. I said, I'm going to. Yo, they see me on the look. Look, they see me on it. I still got mine. Look, mine ain't going nowhere. You ain't going to Turkey or nothing. That's real. No, ain't no turkey. I don't care. You go to Turkey. No. Bro, I went to Turkey. That's good. I ain't got no hair, so you can't accuse me. I went to Turkey in that fucking airport.

46:00Eight out of ten men had their shit wrapped up and bloody like, they ain't going to Turkey for that shit. Like, girls going to Columbia D off of BBL? They are in Turkey. The airport is flooded with dudes with their little blood on their shit. They're going to get their head. They think that your shit's still El Natural rap. El Natural, baby. Throw a little bit of my head on it. That's a no-brainer. But you know what, then? We need to do something together. How about these guys, DC Young, one of them guys came on the show. They was like, yo, Kiss, you got your head like? He said, yeah, then you bought them shit back here.

46:35He trying to save that shit. Chingo Bing. Chingo Bing, huh? That boy Chingo Bing, 85 South. This shit pushed back here. I'll give up. I gave up a long time ago. My shit push back like that. I'm giving up. Take a bit and shave your shit. Oh, take a bit. Take a bit and shave. That's what I use. You know, my shit's smooth as fuck, but I use a bit. What do you want me to use? A thousand dollar razor? This shit is just, it's better. It's just work. See, he's passionate. I ain't got to worry about this shit. I'm important. This shit right. Yeah, you know what I'm saying. Fortunate. I'm fortunate, baby.

47:18Oh, no. I wish. I tell them all the time. No, I take these, make it last forever, so it make my hair grow. You know what I mean? You what?

49:50I got shit with Keith Sweat. You got it. I shot a movie with him and all that. Twin pillars. Yeah, we doing the episode. Darren Henson, Nicole Murphy, myself. Fat Joe Kane now did his thing in it. You know what I'm saying? Darren from the Bronx, too. You can't dispute that. He grew up with Raul Melrose. If he say he ain't from the Bronx, he full of shit. I'm telling you, he from the Bronx. Yeah, Darren, he don't say he's not from the Bronx. He from the Bronx. Because he was on that dance, you know. He doing it. break dance. What's this thing? The dance? Well, then. Hey, let me. Dance to the airscrew.

50:26Let me explain something to you, Chief, right? You never, you never been into drugs or nothing like that, right? No, that's not. That's the, I'm not calling weed drugs, right? Weed is like a cigarette. Wait, no, limit. No, I'm, no, the point is, the reason why he's still rich and get all that money is because he's not on drugs and he don't take drugs. I'm trying to tell you that every time we see a legend like him look great, Liv, I went to his house. This shit on the water, big ass estate, this, this, that. Same thing when I watch Eddie Murphy and his fucking documentary. It's start in a$90 million house, B.

51:04That shit come, I knew he ain't use drugs. That motherfucker was like, nah. Nigga, I ain't never smoke a cigarette. And every time our legends are well kept and they look amazing, it's because they didn't fuck with the drugs. The drugs are taking you down. Hard drugs. I'm not talking about a little licks, huh? Because Eddie was smoking a joint doing the documentary. The light in his head. He said they were saying wild, cold pain. He didn't start smoking a joint until he turned grown and already mad rich. I understand that. Some people smoke the joint when they're old to go to sleep. And me, I run for the neck.

51:37The joint for the leg. The time I ran out the house, what naked? The leg. No bullshit. No leg pain. What did you say you smoked weed and ran out the house, but naked? Smoked weed one time. That wasn't weed. It was weed. The girl gassed me and was saying, y 'all, that was Frankie, baby. The sex going to be incredible. That was in weed, though. Frankie, baby. That nigga said I smoked the old dirty bastard. Whoa. Well, she gassed me. The sex going to be great. This, this, that. I smoked that shit. I ran out that crib. Butt ass naked. Like, three in the morning, thank God. I was like, catching a heart attack.

52:13I got to go to Austin. She gassed me. Joey, just get in the car. Don't worry, I'll take you. Get in the car. She went around the block. I took, like, eight showers. I ain't never do that shit again and I'm in the studio where the DEA can knock us nigga, them niggas got mountains of weed in them and everybody smoke every night I drove home from the studio, I swore I was gonna go to jail for just second hand smoke, I smell like Jadakiss and I don't even smoke every night I'm going home I smell like weed hell yeah I'm a casual smoker

52:51hold on hold on hold on hold on hold on hold on hold on hold on hold on hold on hold on hold on hold on hold on let me tell you you can't smoke in this building shout out to Roc Nation somehow he found the loophole he got a window about it somewhere this guy can smoke in this fucking place right he go he come back I see damn man they're on the Hubonic chronic You can't even speak too loud in this fucking building. Jada come back and I know the difference too. I don't get high or nothing like that but I know how to observe. I know when they gave him the pure or he's just fun with it. Like sometimes they give him that shit he's stuck.

53:30I gotta say everything. Get motherfucking in like this. Look Jada Voo's shaking. He poltergeist out. Hold on, hold on, Joe. God forbid what you thinking. Yo, yo, yo. You probably poltergeist out. You and that shit like, yo, free-falling. Yo, that shit crazy. What? Yo. Yo, foot is footed actually footed right now. He keeps shaking his foot. Hold on a second. It's the meeting foot. All right. We ain't doing deals. Is the deals going to go through or not? You know how you can do with these offers. Man, let me tell you something, Spant. We put our foot in their ass. We came on the podcast. You seen that shit, huh?

54:11That ain't no pause two times, fella. That's just the truth. You a part of American history, what's going on here. We started a fucking podcast. These guys in the game 20 years, 10 years. This guy got 10 followers. We on with Keith Sweat, TLC, this every fucking day. You saw that list yesterday? Nah, well, they sent us a list of about 30 people, superstars, all begging to be on the show. We talked to our people. They don't send me the list. We on Netflix in six months. I don't get this list. He doesn't ever do that shit. You think I'm delivering? I'm not. No, I ain't involved. Let me tell you something, Keith.

54:48No, I ain't involved in the list. I'm going to tell you something. I don't give a fuck what he said. He want to be humble. I am not. The one thing I learned from Kanye West is you got to fucking say what the fuck is going on. Because they try to act like this regular shit. This ain't regular shit. They nerders. They flabby and sick. Them motherfuckers looking like Mitch Blood Green. He going crazy. I don't see the list. You know I know Mitch Blood Green. They know me and you is good, so they probably just told me right before you came up on the elevator. You know your man Keefer's. You know Keefer's my guy.

55:56Let me explain something to you. The hardest ticket in the world, and he got access, is the All-Star Game. I don't give a fuck if you got pneumonia. you go to that game and you sit in that seat or next year Chris Tucker take your shit they don't give you part two you turn that shit down you ain't getting part two it ain't for consideration that seat is yours if you're blessed enough there is no money if you sell that bitch billionaire dudes ask me yo let me give you 200 ,000 pounds I'll say fuck no they'll be like oh he's sitting in Fat Joe see Fat Joe ain't never coming again the other one is Christmas Day in New York City.

56:37I'm telling my business partner, yo, what's up? I got you. Let's go. Let's shit on him. Let's sit courtside. He's like, hey, you know, I'm going to do marshmallows in the fireplace. He almost burnt down the whole fucking house fucking with the s'mores and shit on the fucking house. He almost burned his shit down with the fireplace. You doing too much, J.D. I know you on Netflix and all that, but you got to chill. You motherfucker. Did we come back that game? That's when I was texting you, We won that game. You was like, yo, Joe, this shit. Say I started off looking poor. Yo, you sleeping them, Joe.

57:11You look like you sleeping on the shit. We was getting our ass whipped by 20. He was dissing me the whole shit. Yo, Joe, wake him up. It's no fluidity. They came back. He came back. We got that dope. That was a good one. You seen that shit back there? It's time to listen to some music? Yep. All right, let's go. Flo B, let's go. What are we listening to? What are we listening to? I don't know. It was your shit. All right, let's work in, baby. Let's go work. Let's go work in. That's what we do. We work. Play it loud.

57:43Come on with that vibe.

57:54Oh, you're about to get another couple million, hundred million.

58:05Searching, searching, searching for your love. I'll be out here. I put that work in. I put that work in. You got that fire. I got that earth wind. I clock in early. I think it's perfect. It's too hard to swallow. I got her thirst quench. Yes, say less. A girl say I'm a dog. Tell her bitch I hate pets. Kid got wheezy, man. Pull that back. Came out the gate with wheezy. Flag on the plate. Wheezy, baby. Shout out to Weezy That shit rocking on the trip

58:58I put that work in You got that fire I got that fire. I got that fire. I got her thirst. All right, he's ready. Say less. A girl say I'm a dog. Tell that bitch I hate pets. Sometimes we make love, make mess, and smoke blunt after blunt. I'm trying to be employee of the money every month. Gotta work for it. And I'ma work for it. That's a job well done like a sirloin. We said, baby, baby, love me like your firstborn. Love is blind, but I search for it. I know I gotta let it all work out. And I'ma let that shit. Keith said, don't sweat that bitch. I can make dollars make sense I can't show my godliness But when I'm close to you The feeling's supernatural Do you feel it's energy?

59:43Is that why you play agency? I take two steps forward And you take three back Challenge Accepted Saying I love you I meant it This feels like I dreamt it Now I've been workin', workin', work workin' for your love Now I've been searchin', searchin', searchin' for your love Now I've been workin', workin', work workin' for your love Now I've been searchin', searchin', searchin' for your love I'll be out workin' until I find your love Oh, I'll be out there

1:00:30Fat Joe:I'll be clear Oh, until I find your way Oh, yeah You'll be trying to give me flowers Popping outside your door Open up your heart Let me give you a little more Oh, I can't have the time for the favor I can't have the time for the favor I can't have the time for the favor I can't even ask it for But you know the word is so close Let's go inside. This shit out of you. I know. Baby, you can tell me right away. I know. Let me get me where you want to go. I know. I live the side of my balls. I know that I've been working. That you and I searching. There's another guy. I know there's something I can't hide.

1:01:16Fat Joe:I've been working, working, working. I've been searching, searching, searching. Oh

1:02:07Wow. All right, hold on. Hold on. I'm prematurely speaking. What year was your first hit? 88. How the fuck it feel to drop a hit at 88 and 2026 drop another hit? Know how hard it is to do that? That's a smash hit. There's nothing they could do with that. Who's the girl that was singing at the end? Gang Maddy. She's from Nigeria. She ain't fucking playing. Like, that shit was incredible. How'd you find the high the hell? You're incredible. How did he make that? I don't think there's nothing he can't do.

1:02:49He top five, better alive. I tell you that every time somebody come up on here and start talking about that R &B shit. I went on Tank Show. Everywhere I go, they bring it up. He's like, yo, Joe, who your top five R &B? You always there. Thank you, man. Always there. Luther Van Joss, you always there. I'm like, yo, it's nothing. I am surprised because that is a super smash hit in 2026, but at the same time, I'm never surprised when it comes to real hit makers. If Nelly came out tomorrow with the biggest record on earth, I would say, okay, 50 Cent come out tomorrow with a new Go Shorty right now.

1:03:27I'd be like, that's what they do. That's what Keith Sweat do. Unfortunately, we take you for granted because that's what you do. You knock them out the park all the time. I see the bag coming out again. That bag coming back out on that tour. That's all I seen on the first four bars. 100 million went by.

1:03:51That motherfucker searching. Yo, Keith, one question I got. Yes, sir. It's legendary. What? You knew I had a time to go out to Atlanta. Right. What made you say, I'm going to Atlanta before everybody? You there before anything happened out there. At that time, it must have been woods, sticks. Yeah, just woods and everything. Well, you know, basically, it was more of a move that I made for my mom because, you know, I wanted to really take care of her. And, you know, for the houses that I would have bought in New York, it was like it wasn't big enough, I felt, for her. So I moved to Atlanta basically because I wanted to give her the biggest house or the biggest situation she ever had.

1:04:29So I bought a house on two acres of land. Now Alpharetta, I just happened to look up and go to Alpharetta back in the day because Alpharetta wasn't nothing. Now Alpharetta is the biggest thing in Atlanta. So I ended up being an Alpharetta, you know, and I had a time. I always admired that about you. So I mean, I was able to build everything because, you know, when I went out there, I was one of the first person to be put a SSL board in my house, 54 channel input. You know what I'm saying? So after the second album, I put the SSL board in my house. And that's where I did the Silk album, my album, all my albums, LSG.

1:05:08Every album I did, that's why I got all my masters on my reels in my garage. You saw my thing in the garage. Nothing but the freak me, the I give all my loves of you, all that. You know, because I did it on my board, SSL board in my house. You know what's crazy is that we... Come on. That's G. Yo, man, shout out Johnny Gill, man. He came to see me. I was in L.A. He hit me up. He was like, yo, I heard you out here. Where you at? I'm at the Waldorf Astoria the man pull up in the Rolls Royce oh take it down you don't understand like me I've never been a hater in my life I always love inspiration I want my legends to look incredible man when that man pulled up in that double R with that shit I said thank God this guy's doing great I love him what color was it I think it was like gray or green who gave a fuck We sitting in the lobby.

1:06:06No, I was reading that because it was because he came to my house and said, man, I'm going to get me one. Oh, he did it. Yo, he did it. He did it. He pulled up on me with that shit. And he came to my house. He said, hold on, nigga, I'm going to get me one now. Fucking right. Fucking right. That's my dude, yo. That man pulled up. I said, yo, he made me so happy. because I love it looking at my legends and my icons, my idols looking good and living good. You know, Mary J, my sister, you know what I'm saying? Tell her we need to do an album together. Keith Sweat with all good. Tell her I need her to do Make It Last Forever with me, Get Up On It with me, all my female classics.

1:06:54Oh my God. Then you do Keith Sweat and Mary Tour? Shit. Let me ask you a question. Did you ever do a Christmas album? You did a Christmas album? Yeah, I did it. I did it, but I just did some videos on it recently. Yeah, I did one eight years ago, but I started putting songs out there. Man, that Christmas time, I had that soulful Christmas, man. They had all that Young Jackson 5 shit, that Luther, that dick, man. There's so much good Christmas music out there. Man, this ain't that, and that ain't this. It's Cracking Kiss. It's got some noise to keep. Ladies and gentlemen. I step on stage. Girls scream like I'm Keith.

1:07:33Appreciate you. My brother. We sweat, man.
