In short

Mario discusses touring in stadiums with Chris Brown and Usher, the current state of R&B, fatherhood as a new dad, and how “Let Me Love You” was made—plus performance/voice-care and signing/developing new talent.

Guest backgrounds

Mario is an R&B singer who broke out as a teenager with “Let Me Love You” at 16. He’s currently on Chris Brown/Usher’s stadium tour (with Tank also appearing). The host is Joe Crack the Dawn (Joe and Jada’s show).

Key claims

Stadium R&B crowds create a “haunting” pressure to deliver new “ones” every night. “Let Me Love You” was cut fast after vocal files disappeared, and Mario believes the song was “meant” for his voice. He says the missing ingredient in modern R&B is “R&B” itself (not just adjacent styles), citing 90s influence. As a father, he’s more patient and prioritizes experiences over time away.

Notable examples

“Let Me Love You” studio session in Miami with Scott Storch/EST/Neo; the “vocal files deleted” moment; comparisons to Luther Vandross live; references to SZA (“Damage”/“Fold” era talk), Kalani’s “Fold,” and artists like Brent, Bryson Tiller, and Lucky Daye.

Ladies and gentlemen make some noise for our nigga. Mario! My nigga. Appreciate you bro. Appreciate you. You know what I'm saying? That's legendary. That's legendary right there. You know what I'm saying? Before we meet him for a mile. You got one of those. Nah, we definitely got one. We definitely got one. Yeah. Rock, Joe, rock. Let's go. Let's go. Let's warm it up. For sure. Yo, Mario, what's up, my brother, man?

4:26It's good to see y 'all, man. This legend, I like. You know, you have done a lot of things, man, but I'm going to just take it right to present day and say, how's it been going on tour with Chris Brown and Brother Usher? The energy. I'm not saying that too lightly. No, no, the energy is crazy, bro. this is the biggest stage R &B's ever been on right when you say R &B the collectively CB young vibrant energy I remember I was saying CB come out I was on tour with Destiny's Child this years ago 2006 2007 2010 I can't even remember but he came out he performed on stage I'm like this kid is a star there's no denying it you know what I'm saying fourth circle moment me and him been cool for over the years and just like never been no weird fake energy before.

5:18You know, it's like niggas just rock with each other whether we were artists or not. We would hang out in high school. You feel me? And so when you're on stage with somebody like that it's a different type of appreciation just for a circle shit, right? Then you got Usher doing his shit. Legendary. We all came up listening to Usher. Tank, Eric Bellinger. Me. It's just a full R &B Avenger moment. Also Tank is on the tour too. I didn't know that. So he got his shirt. He got his shirt off. We are. Every show. That nigga topless. Every show. Off red. You know what I'm saying? Tank coming out. That energy.

5:52That's the energy. He don't give a fuck. That energy. But the energy gotta be crazy all night. Bro, it's crazy. I mean, there's not a stage bigger than stadiums in terms of you gotta go Michael Jackson right after that. Right? But when you have that many people singing your music night after night you know, So it's like the greatness is haunting you. For me, it's haunting me every day. It's like, okay, you got to come with another one of them ones. You want, like, you know what I'm saying? I want to hear this on a new... Like a present day. Present day. I want to hear this on some new... You know, but for me, it's also just paying homage to the journey, bro.

6:30I feel like I belong here. You know what I'm saying? And my brother saw that and invited me out on Soulwood MCB. You know, I watch interviews. That's the craziest shit. That's fine. I watch interviews of Chris Brown Bigging you up all the time And so the fact that he asked you to join the tour Is amazing Because I watch him just like He won't let them throw no slander your way He be like nah that's the brother He sing his ass off Love him this I seen that in interviews And to actually break bread together That's my dog Like we have real conversations outside of music shit you know about real life shit you know what I'm saying and motivate each other like you know what I'm saying so that's just it's just it's a blessing that we can share this stage and do the music shit too you know what I mean but like yeah young legend you had Let Me Love You at 16 how the hell did that feel that was out the park it's an understatement yeah I was in album mode you know trying to figure out what the next conversation was for me like as a young artist like before that was the Mario album right so like just a friend, braid my hair, you know, just new kid on the block, but he sound like he hit a state, but is he?

7:44You know what I'm saying? Is he really hit a state? And so I think that that conversation going in with Scott Storch and being in Miami, you know what I mean, spending a whole month out there working with Scott Storch and EST, you know, Neo came down and he was already, you know, his name was circulating as a writer. He was doing his artorship, but nobody knew him as an artist yet. So I think he came down there with a point to prove, like, okay, this is who I am. Came in there, Scott dropped him like three tracks. He went in the other house, you know, he had like three, four houses going, recording music, night and after night, parties, music, lit, music, take a break, back to the music.

8:23But it was always taking the music serious. You know what I'm saying? So for me, it was like artist development in a way on another level as far as recording records and like working with different people, learning how to move the rooms around. you know, your energy one day is like you might be on some like, yo, I don't even feel like cutting music in it. And then the best record to come out of that. I ain't even taking that shit. The best music come out of it, right? And so Neo came down, wrote a few records. I'm like, okay, this shit's a vibe. But I wasn't in the room with him. So me and EST writing every day in the room.

8:54Other artists we writing. He was in his own vibe. He came over with Let Me Love You. I cut the record the first night. I'm like, this record's cool. I was making more lit records at the time. Like more turned up records. The next day we came back, the record had completely disappeared out of the session. Like, the files were gone. It wasn't dead. They were gone. The files, they disappeared. All the vocal files deleted. So I'm like, all right, let's just move on. Like, no, no, no, we got to cut this record again. So we had like two hours and I had a flight. I want to stay that night. So I cut the joint in like three hours.

9:27I just rushed through it. But I gave, the vocals that I gave that day was more potent for whatever. I was just anymore. You kind of knew it a little bit. I gave them passes. I'm like, here's some passes. I'm here to pass this rule. Got back to New York. Go to the office with Clive. He blasted it in the office. Lyrics sheet in front of me. This is the single. We're going out. Everybody's like, this record is crazy. It's out of here. One of the biggest records of all term, huh? Yes, sir. And I heard, I believe, it might be some Fat Joe shit. I thought I heard Neo say that's one of the records. He wish he ain't right for somebody.

10:03That is. He wish he kept that joint. Jocko says he wish he kept what's love? That record's a motherfucker. It's crazy, bro. I can't imagine it being with anybody else. I don't know. When I sing it, I'm like, there's nobody that's going to sing this record better than me. This record was meant for me. You know what I'm saying? I feel like it's about all my records. Now, I hear records, too, from other artists. I'm like, yo, I could have killed that shit better. But the overall package was for them. You know what I'm saying? What I do, I don't think nobody can lean back like you. Nah. I don't care who you are.

10:39Nah, bro. Oh, thank you, brother. I truly appreciate you. Yeah, nah. That's your shit, Joe. You done my shit. Yeah. Nobody could have did it. Nobody. I've listened to other artists and said, damn, I wish I had that song. Mm-hmm. That's a good feeling, though. When a song make you say, I wish that was mine, or I wish I had that, that's how you know. Some people's voice is just too... Clear rock. You like their voice more sometimes than you like the song sometimes even. Because you're a fan of their voice. You know what I'm saying? You're like, yo, I like the way Mario sang on his record. Even if somebody else sang the record, it might not have been.

11:14Have you been good to your voice? Or do you smoke cigarettes and drink 40 cases a year? That's funny. I was just telling my bro the other day. He's like, when I was in middle school, I used to smoke cigarettes. On some wild young niggas shit, right? Yeah, yeah. But after that... What I think, though, I think... Yo, Mark Anthony smokes 10 packs a second. I think cigarettes, you need a little bit of it. Not for your whole duration of life. Some of them smoke cigarettes. I will say this. I think that it depends on the texture of your voice. My voice is like a saxophone. My shit clean. My shit is like a knife, nigga.

11:54My shit cut through. I can't do... He needed new ports to enhance his... You know what I'm saying? I'm telling you no real shit I ain't gonna lie to you cause he don't know about folks cause my voice is like the R &B voice but the Ratsby shit but I will say this back in the day oh you got an R &B you got baby's kids voice nigga get the fuck out of you my shit is R &B my shit goes off You invite me to the studio, 230. I don't sound the same as 130. Right, right, right. I should laugh. No, yo, you working on an R &B. Tell this nigga you working on an R &B album, my nigga. He might be. Nah, he might be.

12:41Nah, but yo, so like back in the day, right? You think about the Rat Pack and you think about James Dean and fucking, you know, fucking. They was going crazy. But what I'm trying to say to you is I've always heard Frank Sinatra was smoking. Like they was going crazy, right? But they want singing in registers up here. That's different. When you start talking about my area, when you start coming to my floor, the shit different. You know what I'm saying? You can't eat, because I've tried, like, I've, you know, I've raged hard with the homies. You sing like Jadick is like, you can love me. Love you.

13:15Make it sound like Louis Armstrong or some shit. Like, yeah. Louis Armstrong.

13:24Behind the Bars presented by Sprite. Cream. Those guys already came with that different slang. Represent a different demographic of the five boroughs. And that was just another one. They was hitting them out the park. That was more on the commercial side for them. But it was still a bang of the beats. The hook, the rhymes, the... the particular four dudes that he used on the song. It was him. That's probably one of the acronyms that will be used forever in life outside of music. Man, phenomenal to see my guys win like that. To this day, the production is, that's another one of them choices. It's like one of the greatest of all time.

14:13To see them in the middle of the street, in front of the cars, and what they were talking about, It was just so legendary, you know, a royal group in hip hop. It's just royalty. And, you know, these guys can't go wrong for nothing. Salute my brothers for just hitting it out the park like that. Check out the full Sprite Living track list and break down the stories behind your favorite bars. The link is in our show notes. This is the Sprite Living track list. Obey your thirst.

14:49Everyone brags. It ain't just you. Everybody brags about how great you still sound, how good. I've been to shows where I go hear my favorite artists and they don't sound the same. Yeah. That's really scary for me. Like when I went up, you know, I go see certain things. I remember maybe two, three years ago I went to see something. I was like, I hope this... Nah, I can't do that. I hope this guy doesn't do... And we artists. We got to perform to pay our bills and all that. but I hope this guy don't do a show no more. Yeah. Because I love the original records. Can't do that. Oh, that's the who shit.

15:30He not trying to, but I get it. Yeah, but it's, I'm sure we've heard it before, but it's happened. It happened to me where I was sitting there and I was like, damn. I need to know one of these that say, let me get a clue that you don't got to say. I think you got to consider that shit. You know what I'm saying? when I be in rooms and it's like, it's 18 blunts going around. I'm like, I put my timer on, nigga, for 45 minutes. I know I got to step out and get some air because I got to show them our... Oh, I've been high my whole career. No! I don't smoke you. Niggas want to hear that, motherfucker.

16:06It's like, I know. You know what I make? I make it. I got to... 45 minutes to clear the filth out. All the time. Every time I see Maxwell, it could be the loudest party. I make him do the... Yo, Maxwell, let me see if you can steal the... Right. That's like entry into the elevator. He going to a party or some shit. He come in and y 'all, I got to hear that. Make sure he can steal in and shit. Hello, that shit right here. Man, that boy Maxwell probably want to stab me or some shit. He be like, yo, this guy make me... I mean... Man, you can commit to those records in a studio. It's definitely like...

16:44when I go in the studio now, I'm definitely considering like, all right, like I know tonight, I can go crazy on actors, but like, I got to think, I'm going to do this for 10 more years, 15 more years. You know, so you like, all right, let me, I can add the extra sauce on the show, but I got to do this every night if this record blew up. You know, it's a consideration, but I think if you take care of your shit, if you practice, like I, before I go on tour, I was telling the same the other day. I was like, bro, the secrets of going on tour as a singer, before you go on tour, you got to, you got to strain your voice.

17:15like a week before you... Now, vocal coaches might not... Your voice? Vocal coaches might not agree to this. But I sing until I can't talk before I go on tour. I go crazy in rehearsal. I sing, sing, sing, sing, sing. Some of my shit is like, okay, cool. Let me chill. And then the muscle grow back stronger two days later. It's like a muscle. You know what I'm saying? You got to sing your song that's hard to sing multiple times until you can't sing it no more. And then by the time you get on tour, it's easier. The shit just... You know what I'm saying? Yeah. Even for rappers How many times you lose your voice on tour It's like damn You gotta push Do you ever lost your shit on tour?

17:53Drug free, cigarette free Beer free You don't bullshit You lose your shit for the state My shit sound like flow Joe Nigga My shit sound like you gotta flow Joe You screaming too much Bust it, check it, watch our record. I just still sound insane. I just still sound insane. My shit's like, hello. Never slipping, nigga. Fat Joe's in the building. Yeah, it's pretty crazy. Because Fat Joe the rapper is totally different from Fat Joe the person. So whenever I grab the mic, I'm ready to go on stage and that shit sound like Fat Joe. I'll be like, oh shit, it sound like Fat Joe. Are you in ears or you in monitors?

18:41I like monitors I'm like a care wrestler I like your ears on stage in the stage you gotta be in the ears those gotta be in the ears a little nigga I had a leak the first week I had you know cause your ears the shit changed like every four years I had to go get remold because it was leaking sound and so it was airing I was hearing two different worlds for like the first week on tour but I hate ears and I bought the most I bought the Rolls Royce of ears your man fucking DJ Cass when we did the residency, he forced me to buy the most expensive ears you could ever buy in your life. I never used them shit together.

19:18Like seven bands, ten bands? Shit like that. Where they come mold your ear. Yeah, they can't push the white shit in the head of the crib. And they tell you it's the Rolls Royce or not. Would you want the real shit or not? Of course, everything I do, I got to do with V.I.G. But the shit is just sitting there. They still sitting in the crib right now. Yeah, I never used them. I used them for that shit. That's crazy. And I never used them again. Nah, man. And it's sad because I should use them. Now, I might should use them Friday when we pull up. When's this coming out? I'm in my mind. Yeah, so we done already ripped down the con...

19:57We coming out with Usher on Friday. Oh, that's fire. So me and Kits gonna go... Okay, that's all right. That's all right. That's all right. Kits, are you gonna look happy to be there at the concert? Stop asking me am I happy, man. I'm not going through depression. I've never seen a guy. I'm not somebody fighting depression or none of that. It depends on what songs you're singing on stage. Because you got songs where you coming, you know what I'm saying, covering that nigga's hands, or you like on some, what songs you doing? I'm always happy. I'm never, I'm not happy. I'm not happy. I'm not happy.

20:36You're happy. Yeah. Yeah. Scott Stray after the Jay-Z concert he's just like, Kane do you care if you live or die? Sticky said, kiss. Are you happy? I don't know if you realize who's a big fan of Raising Cane? Me. So you up to date? You up to date? Bro, I haven't watched TV in like six months, bro. They kill Uncle Marv. They killed Uncle Marv. Oh, my God. Yo, I almost cried. He got the freaking text messages. He goes, yo, you're all upset about Marv. No, I got... Who said that? Fridge. I almost cried. Damn. I seen Uncle Marv. I see, yo, how they do this to Uncle Marv, bro. This a... How they take him out, though?

21:25What's the other one? Who is it? You know it's a TV show. You get... No, no, no. I bought into Uncle Marv. I'm a serious you know Game of Thrones right now the dragons that shit mean what's going on right now what is House of Dragons that shit that's almost when Mike Tyson I'm watching the West with the Irish thing is Lioness came back out Lioness right on the same thing as West I gotta fuck something up I got to fuck someone. I got to spoil you something. I have to spoil you. Spoil you. In the, what's it called? Game of Dragons? House of Dragons. You know the famous story. They got cartoons about it, everything.

22:19Me and Big Pun was trying to go to the tunnel. Security was fun. Pun, I don't, you never met Big Pun, right? You two young people. He was the problem. And so Pun wanted to smoke. I heard the stories. He wanted to smoke with everybody. So he's arguing with like a hundred security niggas. He sucked my dick. Fuck your mother. And I had to address him and say, yo, pun. I'm certified. Yeah, we're good. No, we going out in the stretch of the Gavins. Only me and big pun. I said, they going to beat the living. We're going to be a shit bags for like three months. But I'm with you. And right when we thought we was going to get beat up, we heard a little voice.

23:00Yo, pun. Yo, Joe. But these things, we turn around as Iron Mike Tyson with the kofi on, fresh off of jail. And this week's Game of Thrones, what's it called, House of Dragons? They got a nigga that's supposed to be the king, but he's ousted. And for like, I guess, two to five years, he's walking, hiding who he is, this, this, that. So he's tired of running, because they looking for him. Every army, you got to kill him to really be a certified king. but this guy's in the most of the story he stops running he stands and waits for the army they come thousands of them they come and they go will you bow your knee to the new queen this and this and that he grabs his sword I am Agdon the king of all kings the slayer of slayers The king, I don't give a fuck.

24:04They look at him. They start laughing. Like a thousand. He's done. He don't got a army. Then they all like. Nigga, his long lost dragon comes out the back. Crazy. He turned around. He goes like Mike Tyson. He turned around. He goes, Sir Costius. That nigga burns all the niggas. he was like yes yes like yo we ain't see the dragon for five years that nigga we thought he was dead the dragon came out of the mix just like he said Sir Garcia he could burn down the whole South Bronx nigga he was like yeah yeah y 'all gotta get my boy in this movie man give him a scene man damn boy I would like Jakaris what's it is it?

25:03Jakaris what is Jakaris Jakaris you know how you know this shit why you acting like you don't know but you know Jakaris we gotta put that in a rhyme it look like everybody know what Jakaris is that's funny it was such a moment for me nah but it's life bro it's life is like you know

25:25you know what I've learned the things It really matter. You can't rush them. Facts. You can't rush the sauce. You can't rush the music. You can't rush relationships. And you definitely can't rush great tequila. That's why 1800 Tequila stands out. The name goes all the way back to the 1800s when the Beckman family started making tequila. And that patience, that attention to the craft has been passed down through more than 11 generations. That's legacy. Sometimes you just got to let something cook. Juan Beckman Vidal, aged 1800, a nail longer than he even had to because he knew it wasn't ready yet.

26:06I respect that. Don't put it out just because you can put it out. Put it out when it's right. That applies to a record, a conversation, a mood, a making, and clearly a bottle of tequila. Once you get it right, you share it with your people. That's always been part of the story. Good tequila, good conversation, and the people around you really appreciate both. Passion, hard work, honesty. Those words are written on every bottle of 1 ,800. And honestly, that's the foundation for anything built to last. So take your time with what you're creating and when the moment is right, share it with your people.

How you feel Being a new dad God's life Is a new father It's bittersweet Cause he was born Six months ago So I'm on the road Right now So it's FaceTime But it's beautiful bro It's the money For him to have A great life Yeah for sure It's beautiful I'm more patient I'm more empathetic I'm more you know I'm not as hot headed Anything happen Is like Call that You know what I'm saying But you know Mom's just holding it down You know we less Than the 1 % Right so rappers Is like singers, they're less than anybody in show business.

30:57I'm thinking the four times. Not singers, though. We are. They're a little bit more than us. I'm not saying that. What I'm trying to get to is that it's your percentages, right? We really take a toll on the family because we're always on the road. We're always working and we feel like we ain't doing nothing. When you put the time and the length of time that you missed together. If you 10 years, for example, you might miss two years. If not more. You know what I'm saying? I try not to think about it like that. I try to think about I calculate the times, but the experiences. I'm like, when I go home, I make sure we have experiences.

31:39That way it's like, you know, things that I know he gonna remember. Even though he's six months, like he's learning fast. Most rappers die in the hotel. Damn, bro. That's fucked up, but it's true. Yeah, but we live in... hotel. Everybody died prodigy. Everybody died trying to get to the next bag. Rest in peace to them. Rest in peace. It's only two, though. Trust me when I tell you, man. Your percentages is off, didn't it? What I'm trying to tell you is that we're always on the road. We're always on the road. We living good, man. We still here. You still here. Life is good. I'm not complaining about the life.

32:20I look at dudes all the time I'm working hard, really working hard. Not for sure. I get what you're saying. Putting tar on roofs. Yeah. Don't think I don't see the doorman nigga in the snowstorm. I look at everybody and be like, damn, I could have been having this position. In fact, when I was born, they said, most likely, you're going to throw away the garbage. You're going to be the sanitation man. So I look at everybody and say, yo, why are you looking like that? I'm just telling you the truth. Life is good, though. It's like when I go home, I see my son. It just put everything else in perspective.

32:55You know what I'm saying? The shit that I used to waste time on. I'm like, nah, when I get home, I'm like, my schedule is like this. I guess, you know what I'm saying? He look like you or he look like the moms? Both of us. But he got her skin tone. He got her skin, but he... It's changing. Yeah, it's changing over time. He's going to get... His feet is going to change. Yeah, it's changing over time. This is him when he was too much. When you saw his son's life, kid? Six months. Yeah, he is. He's darker than this now, but like, yeah. You know what I'm saying? He look like his mom right there. Nah, nah, he gonna get something.

33:20He fire. Yeah, yeah. He gonna change. This guy's beautiful. Thank you, bro. I appreciate you, bro. His name is Lord Nasir Barrett. Lord Nasir Barrett. Barrett. Yeah. How did y 'all come up with that name? That shit. Fire in the game of thrones. I ain't gonna show it on the camera. I ain't gonna show it on the camera. We gonna block it up. Yeah. Lord Nasir Barrett. You good, King. Lord Nasir Barrett. Yeah, yeah. Fire. Lord Nasir. so it's more just about presence right you know he came to my girl like three months three days before he was born like he came to her spiritually like she saw her orb in the room like you know what I'm saying it was a few things that happened before he was born so it was like she called me I'm in Germany on tour she's like babe I just saw a child came to see me I was like babe you're probably tired she's like no no a child really came in the room to see me I was like three days later she found out she pregnant you know So already right there for me is like, yo, he's here for a purpose.

34:18You know what I'm saying? Not so much comparing it to the way that Lord is used in the Bible, but the name Lord, the way that people use Lord, it's a way to describe someone with strong presence, right? Someone who's a governing of their own space, right? So it's just affirmation. When people say his name, when he say his name, he walking with that power. You know, my mom's had a dream. My mom's had a dream when she was pregnant and me, she never forgot that dream. My aunt knows it too. And she would tell me all the time, yo, you remember the dream? This and this and that. And I'd be like, yeah, ma.

34:53And so she, so she died, she knew the dream. You know what I'm saying? So some of those dreams, they stick with people a long time. Absolutely. You know? So that's a beautiful thing. You got a little boy out there, man. Yeah, bro. I was like, I was standing up the streets. Man, God. So when we found out he was a boy, I already knew. You know what I'm saying? In my heart, I'm like, this is a boy. But we got the little gender joint, gave it to her mom, said, we don't want to know yet who's going on. But then one day she woke up, she's like, babe, I want to know. I said, babe, let's just hold out.

35:25She found out it was a girl. She was in the kitchen quiet. I was like, damn, I know it's a boy. I mean, she was in the kitchen for like five minutes. It was like, she's like, I wanted a girl. Yeah, they want the girl. Yeah. I was like, babe, I work for, like, God, he's, listen, trust me. I work for this. I work for this. You don't miss. I sacrifice a lot for this. You know what I mean? It's beautiful, though. We good, man. He's an amazing kid. That's motivating. That's fine. You know what I'm saying? Keep me up. What new music you got coming our way? Tell us. Yeah. I've been cooking. I've been cooking, man.

35:59I got a lot of different vibes that I'm cooking up right now and just figuring out what texture I want to really put into the world right now. Yeah. It's some things baking. It's baking. It's baking. Yeah, yeah. You know, it's a process. Absolutely. Every day you wake up with a different, you know, I started writing today. I have a new joy, a last minute. And when I tell you that, man, we cooked up some last minute shit, this shit's so crazy. I need that 88 cocaine. Man, I need you to send me that cocaine. What y 'all feel like missing an army? Nah, nah, it's cool. And Dre, you know, he's been proving to me that I'm full of shit.

36:33I told you, you said, yo, Dre, send me this shit. And I was like, I'll make this shit. He said, yeah, yeah, you made this beat. You made that beat. You made, now that's the new butt of the joke every day I talk to you. But you say to him Nah nah joke you threw that snare in nah nah you came up with that hook but you really know your shit. I'm like I'm like alright they do come up with the shit too. You know what I'm saying? You be on your production shit you be. No. Nah you ain't fuck with it. I know how to hear. You know how to hear. You know how to hear. What y 'all feel like missing an R &B?

37:06R &B. Yeah. What y 'all feel like R &B. R &B. of what we missing in R &B is R &B. You know the best answer? What we missing in R &B is R &B. There's a difference. I always saw people ask me, there's a difference. 90s R &B was like that. It's the Bible. It's really the Bible. 90s R &B is really the Bible. I wouldn't say that. What I would say is a couple of chapters. As far as R &B that we call Rhythm and Blue. Bro, let me thing, sonny. But then you're going to go back. Hold up. Hold up. Somebody that sing need to listen to them niggas. The four times the temptation. Bro, bro, bro, no. Of course.

37:54Of course. 1 ,000%. I got sunshine. The music was singing. Of course. So it's very hard. You think one of them songs right now don't work? No that's It's two different types of R &B That's like R &B so But 90s 90s is Niggas what for me is like That feeling 90s R &B where it's like nigga It's fly it make you wanna You know go on a day it make you wanna put some shit on Take a shorty out Call a shorty up that you That you been thinking about but you been working hard That's missing What I'm saying to you is hard it's hard to just say because I've heard such great music my whole life R &B music I get what you're saying it's like but now I think the last record that really did that for me was all folded by Kalani the reason why that record was so successful is because it sounded like 90s it was successful because of my remix LMA man LMA's great too but that folded that folded It's crazy.

39:04With a pillow and your thing, all of that. I know, I like the K-100 and all that. I love her out. It's some good music out there. But that's good. But what you saying is out there too, you got Gibby on doing that type of music, like the soulful. It's all different vibes. It's all good. It's too soulful. I'm just trying to tell you, the last song I heard that made me think of Brandy, think of Monica, made me think of this, was that Fold. Yeah. You did the remix, Neo did the remix. Tony Braxton. Y 'all knew that was the third round. You heard that shit and was like, oh no, I need to get in on this shit.

39:40This shit different. Like this, our era. You know, and it's just proof that you can make quality music that sounds like 90s R &B and it could go number one if you take the time out to do it. Now, all this, you know... I do it all, bro. I can do so for R &B. Why you fuck me, nigga? Fuck your mother. Fuck your father. Fuck your... Like, you like, yo, what happened to R &B, bro. It's a place for everything. At the end of the day, we can't... No, listen, but at the end of the day, it's right now, the media is so vast. It's so quick. You go right here and just play whatever you want. But when it comes to R &B, the shit that we talking about, it's very few and far in between, bro.

40:26It's not out there. For me, I'm taking my time and making the textures that make sense so that I can give the fans what they need. That's my man, Breon. Breon signed this girl at a youngest. You coming with a new album? Invention. If you are coming with a new album, you cannot release your album without putting this girl on your album. That's all I'm trying to do. Fat Joe, you just told me to give you an 88. I'm giving you a shit. You just told me, yo, can you mind my business and point me in the right direction. There is a young lady. I don't know her name. He signed to Breon. That's why we have ears.

41:09Can you hear me? Let me ask you a question. Anybody in my head. Do you got a session with her yet? No. He's from Yonkers. He's the king of Yonkers. This is why you over speaking. It got to go through my head. I don't care what Breon said. Leon Mia Washington Cung Why didn't I hear her I want to hear her For my age What you like about her though I'm not gonna tell you Kidding for it What you do What you do about it When you hear her When you hear her You gonna be like Nah I like I like hearing the artist But I found the artist I heard an artist yesterday That I'm like I wanna sign this buddy I get it It's like It's a lot of exciting shit out here My man He got I think her name is Faith.

41:59He got a young girl. Yeah. Her name is Faith. He got a young girl. He got a young girl. R &B or hip hop. R &B. R &B. Crazy. When you hear it, I told Mary about it. Mary in my house. I said, yo, there's a little girl. It didn't go to... It got to come across our desk. That's the only thing I'm saying. I feel you. It ain't come across... You ain't get to press play yet. It got to come across somebody's desk. Yeah. fundamental him who's the last artist that you heard yeah from the beginning and you was like wow the last artist that I heard from say it again from any this era or whatever that you heard and you was like wow like what honestly her bro her her I know she not yesterday knew but to me she was the last female that came out that I had on repeat for like a year we did too she's amazing bro what's that what's that one song that shit I was fucking with the Damage record Damage I was in vacation in Dominican Republic and that shit was the only record that spun for like the whole week matter of fact I want to do a project with you her let's get in the studio she's amazing bro she's very very talented and I love Sizz's voice SZA's amazing.

43:28SZA's voice is like... She's very unique. SZA got a lot of... And just her... Like, just the way she float through music, the way her choices, all of that, she's... She's smart. SZA video yesterday. That was crazy. I was like a... Yeah. It was like a movie from Scorsese. She got one she just... Oh, I know what you're talking about. She take off everything. Yeah, she walked into the ocean that night. It was... That was crazy. That's the one. Yeah. Yo, like I said, that Kalani. We also got what? Ella Mae? Ella Mae. She's alright. Her pen is whoever penned that shit up. That album's incredible. Fellas, what fellas?

44:08R &B wise. Honestly, the usual suspects. They've been hot forever. Brent fired. Brent fired. Brent's doing his thing. He got his arms down. I fuck with him. His pen is fire. Talk that shit. Bryson. Oh, Bryson. For sure. Bryson too. You know what I'm saying? That boy Bryson, let me tell you something, man. You know Bryson. Bryson, man. I met Bryson Tiller working on his first album. You know Rich Zabalba discovered Bryson Tiller. And he lived with Rich. He wrote that whole album in my man's crib. And so I was hearing that shit before. Everybody heard that shit. And he be hanging with us in the studio.

44:51Like, say, like, he be hanging with us in the studio, just chilling every day, chilling while Fat Joe's working and all that. And then that nigga popped off to the next hemisphere. That's one guy, that's probably, like, the last artist I was around that I seen blow. Like, you know. Out the blue. Nah, just, we knew he was super-duper talented, but everybody ain't guaranteed to become, like, a superstar. and so I watched him work on his project humbly, you know, regular equipment and everything and just to see how people, you know, like say you, you know, people can look at you and say like you got a story, I got a story.

45:32I got a Chris Brown story when he was like 14. Tina Davis brought him to me in the parking lot. That's crazy. I'm with Scott Storch. I met Baby. Man, that's crazy. And that man sung in that fucking parking lot and I knew for a second I walked away and I was like, okay, this Michael Jackson. Out of here. It's out of here. I could do that. That's what I'm trying to tell you about your girl from Yonkers. Fat Joe, you hear someone look past whatever clothes you got on, whatever your shit is, whatever, and hear you and be like. And see the potential. Big time. Off top. No, for sure. Big time. Have you ever signed an artist, like a female artist or R &B artist?

46:13Yeah, I signed an R &B artist it didn't work out for me like that, but she's still out there doing her thing. I thought she was really, really, really, really talented. I still believe so. And I don't want to say it because she just started. So her career to... I got a few that I'm looking at right now, like, you know what I'm saying, that I'm talking to. You want to sign? Yeah, just like, yeah, talent. You know, just to pass down this knowledge, bro. Pass down these experiences. There's certain things we know just from being artists and living and being in it. That's like, you know, it's valuable.

46:44wisdom, bro, for people that can save them full five years, right? So I'm at that point now where I'm like, yo, let me just, I want to pass this wisdom down. But I also know the era I have for music and R &B and like what I want to see out there, you know what I'm saying? So just, and then artists that's like self-contained that understand what, you know, where they at right now but just need help navigating it. You know what I'm saying? So I got a couple. And you got some people that just, they dead nights. Yeah. You got some people this is genius. What's your man, a dollar sound, signed that guy.

47:18What's his name? Leon Thomas. Problem. I don't think, I don't think Leon Thomas need no guidance. I got a feeling I never worked with him or nothing. I got a feeling Leon Thomas had the whole package just like, he was like, ready to go. Take your time, wash your butt. Yeah. He says that?

47:45I don't know no lyrics I just sing along like I know Leon's been doing it for a while he's been baking he's been really cooking and building his I respect his drum you can hear that he's real you know another guy that comes up I don't really know his music too much like that but I know he can really sing as the kid Lucky Day he like Tank Topless every time I ever see him, his shirt is off. He got the eight pack. He don't give a fuck. He flexing. He can't go too short. What am I doing? I can't go. I don't want to. I don't want to. I'm telling you what it is. Some guys, that's their fucking uniform.

48:30That's their fucking uniform. They come out every time we go. Any place I ever went, they go in. Lucky day. He coming out top. He could have a tuxedo out. Cut out to six. I swear to God, somebody, you're going to clip this, you're going to find that shit. He wears tuxedos cut with just a six-pack showing. Like, that's it. Like, that's, you know, these guys, you know, they in great shape, you know? So they doing what they got to do. R &B shit, man. R &B shit. I love R &B shit. You know, my favorite R &B singer of all time, Luther Vandross. You can't tell me nothing about Luther. Luther was that guy, bro.

49:12The records, the live performances, Luther was one of those guys. All he needed was a mic. You seen that white mic? All he needed was a mic. Ever seen him without a mic? Nah, bro. Luther, your publicist over there can tell you, can he a little older. You know, he more like my age. Luther used to walk on stage in the stadium. And the mic be there. He walked by and go, hey! Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But he's still using the mic. He's over there. The whole fucking stadium is hearing him. Come back. Ow, James. Yo, he's not even on the mic in the whole stadium. He is. Nah, he was a beast. He was acrobatic with his performances for sure.

49:56Luther was like, I'm going to serenade you. This is one performance, like a war show performance. He had all the girls in there. You know how you act? You go see Luther. put the mic in the middle of the shit and he'll walk by. The mic is there. What are you doing, though? And the whole stadium, he keep walking. You hear that shit like he on. Jay, what did he do? All right. Could you find it, please? One more time. It's crazy, bro. You got mics right here. And what did he do? I can't do it no more. My voice is too rassy. I sound like Jay to Jay. I'm just telling you.

56:08You know James Brown. In his version of singing, he did the Jadakiss. New York, I'm outside. That nigga went over there, James Brown, to Italy and was like, Pavarotti, you know, his voice is like legend. So he's out there. He's the king of Italy and the music just starts. James Brown goes, you can't compete with that soul, bro. The soul. It's just hit different. You can't compete with the soul. You know when he passed away, Michael Jackson was done with America. He wasn't fucking with America. That's after the trial and all that. And so they reached out to him and was like, yo, you know James Brown was his idol.

56:48And so they reached out to Michael Jackson and he said, you know, I'm not fucking with America no more. Reverend Al Sharpton told me this story. He was James Brown's godson. So he said Michael Jackson was like, nah, I ain't fucking with America. I love Mr. Brown, this and that, but I can't. do it. And then the next day, they called Reverend out like four in the morning. It was like, Mr. Jackson is here in the funeral. They let him in without even asking. He went straight to you. No, no, he went in. No, no. He was at the funeral where they, the morgue. So he went up in there and they said he started combing Mr.

57:30Brown's hair to the right because he knew Mr. Brown only wears hair. He said, yo, he don't wear his hair like this. made the part. He made it, I rocked his shit to the right. I really rocked it. And then he walked in, we seen that on TV when he walked in. I think they had it in Atlanta or something. And Michael Jackson walked in, funeral. Prime example though, what you're saying right now just got me thinking. It's so important that if you great, for you to show your greatness and for there to be as much support around that as possible because all of our greats, the ones that we grew up with, our parents made us listen to all of that.

58:07They're either gone or leaving us. Like we're never getting, the music is here, but we're never getting that presence again. So it's like, it's our duty to like, I'm happy to salute them, but I'm happy that you're excited about new talent. It's our duty to find those talents and be like, look, we need y 'all to be as authentic as possible. Because we know what greatness is, right? And so, and dropping new music, it's like, I'm thinking about all of that. I got songs that I feel like is here that's just awesome. A whole different like, and it's like, damn, is this what the world wants? Is this going to work right?

58:42But it's great. But then I got other songs that's like, okay, somebody else could cut this, but it's still going to work for the radio. You know, so, those are the things that I consider when I think about greatness and dropping music and who I am in R &B. You know what I'm saying? So, next time I come up here, I'm going to have some, you know. This guy never dropped the whack verse. You know how hard that is? How many years you been rapping? Oh, God, bro. I've dropped Wack Versus. They paid me, you know, $300 ,000 to rap on some bitch's song from house music somewhere, and I just said, Eenie, meenie, miney, moe, catch it, I'm out of there.

59:21I'm gone. So I've done it. Is that because you cut, do you cut less records and you cut records when you, you just make music? That's the answer to a lot of people what's going on. I can't. If I gave more, I'd give less. So I don't just waste. That's real shit. From an artist standpoint, that's real shit. That's why I had a lot of shit with Puff. I didn't want to write for him because I felt it was taken from my stash. You know what I'm saying? Oh, no, it definitely was taken from your stash. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, it was taken from the stash, all right. wasn't the worst stash. It was the real stash.

1:00:05Yeah, nah, I ain't, no. Let me ask you. You have a circle back. You have a circle back. I was like, yo, I wrote the Benjamins. I wrote this. I wrote that. I need to get my percentage off these. That's it. You wrote the Benjamins. Yeah, just recently. Kiss, you wrote the Benjamins? Yeah, I wrote Buff Bar. I wrote that. That's crazy. I didn't know that. You wrote all that shit. That's my part. And Luke Sheik wrote his own part. Kiss ain't never write shit for me. You see, that's the problem, man. Yo, Kiss, can you write something for me, man? I'll kiss. Ah! This thing's crazy, man. This guy's crazy, man.

1:00:40Yo, Kiss, give me eight buzz real quick. Can we take a shot for something? Come on now. Let's keep it 1800. There's Michael Jackson and there's Rest of Life, right? And so when I first heard about this tour, besides anything with the name Michael Jackson, I felt like it was the biggest store I ever heard of in my life. For them to link up, because I thought it was AI. I seen Chris Brown going on with me. Nah, this is real. Then it was real. Then I looked at the prices of the tickets and looked at it. And I went in my room one day and I seen them tallying up. Yeah. Oh, no, I got my tickets beat.

1:01:28Oh, my God. This shit's serious. Nah, it's serious. They don't even... They just copping without... You know, Chris, he went with Bryson and Summer Walker and then spun the block again real quick. The shit that CB does is legendary, bro. This shit is legendary. They getting... It's legendary. There's no such thing as getting to the back. They getting to the back. In this baseball stadium? What kind of stadiums? Yeah, it's baseball stadiums. What the? Football stadiums. It's all types of stadiums. You got to wear ears on that. What kind of stadiums? My God, bro. Let's listen. It's to still living.

1:02:05Still living, my G. Longevity. Still living. Longevity. God bless the flag. Being dads. God bless the Lord. Being bosses. Being kings. That's right. The Lord. The baby. Long live the Lord. You're right? Long live the Lord. Yes, sir. Nephew. Yes, sir. Salute. Salute. Nah, y 'all niggas crazy He gave me that papi poodle It's a story to tell 1800 Right now, if you could give some advice To young Mario, what would you tell him? Hold your head Everything you thinking, not gonna work out It's gonna work out The people, best thing in your life right now The things that you don't understand You know Take your time with it Don't overthink every day you know what I'm saying God love you like you feel me like just the things that matter you know to a kid who feel like he don't have a place you know what I'm saying trying to figure it out you know what would you tell young young kiss don't sign the fucking contract but then it would have went all wrong right I mean pretty much the same power points he said you know try to keep some good people around you try to learn the business the best you could, but I think if we didn't get, if we didn't get, if the shit didn't happen to us, we wouldn't have been able for the new dudes to make that money that they're making.

1:03:36You know what I mean? Also, 360 deals and all that, we caught, we, as bad as it was, it ain't that bad. They started doing more. The pillaging started of getting a little bit crazy after that. He was a part of the era that tried to find out and break the code. Man, we broke the code. I would say, like, getting signed at a young age is, to me, better than getting signed. Yeah, so you can go through it. I would say, yo, get the harsh shit out the way. Yeah, you get the bullshit out the way. You can fix your shit and get on with your career and still be in your prime. Yeah, it's a lot of things and provisions and certain things you get as a minor that when it comes to renegotiating and getting things all the way right.

1:04:25You know what I'm saying? You got it right now. We have it out. For sure. You said right now, you got to go through Jelly Bean, but then you down. You got to kill some fucky. Yeah. I'm reckless. You know what I'm saying? I'm reckless to me. So it happened when it happened for the right reason. Type shit. You right about that. You right. You know, you just learning. You learning. As you going. You learning preservation early. Right? You learning. Only thing I know without even cutting. How to deal with women. They ain't getting 30 in 20 years. The next generation ain't getting a 30 clip. That's the rate what they doing right now.

1:05:02That's facts. They ain't getting a 30 or 20 clip. None of them kind of clips. They getting clipped. They also ain't trying to make that type of music. They don't even want a 30. Yeah, they ain't not even trying to make timeless music. I'm going for the quick bag right quick and right now. It's hot, hot. They streaming. Streaming is hard. Also, being able to see the other side of everything before the digital crusade, before all of that, right? You caught something. You catching all of the real interaction. Then you watching humanity shift. You're like, okay, that's the upper hand in life in general.

1:05:37When my grandmother was past, I asked her, she died like 90 years old. I'd be like, yo, you was here when it was horse and carriage. Type shit. And then you watched the car. Yo, that's humanity. That's crazy. For sure, bro. Real shit. I'm asking my grandmother. She was sick for her last month. I went to the hospital every day and was learning. I kept asking her, you seen the horses? She saw the horses and then it went into cars and shit. That's crazy. Like, niggas had a car. So like, if you was super rich, you had that. Yes. So if you was super rich, your horse was healthy, nice hair, everything.

1:06:15but if you broke your horse was like nah, real shit I'm just saying like, is that what she was I'm just saying you took me, you taking me back I came from a poor family brother big up to yourself brother, we look forward to seeing you prosper in your new endeavors, stay golden I tell you, don't change your thing very solid, you're my brother for life, you already know love my nigga that's cause you did a song with him man I'm your brother for free. I did a song. You know what I'm saying? I heard of you. Jamie Foxx. You know this. We got some more shit we got to do. We got songs before that, though.

1:06:55But this nigga, like, anytime I see Jay, it's always been real. I'm going to let me love you, I'm going to let me love you. I'm going to let me love you. We did a remix years ago. Let me love you. This was crazy. This is not new. They've been cooking. This is old production. That's my dog. I mean, why you think I call him? I know. That's my dog. I know who I need. I'll marry you. And we're going to cook some more shit, too. We're going to cook some more. We're going to cook some more shit. You know, and it's like, I'm just getting another bag that I ain't even tapping to yet. Once you come off this money train, it's another bag.

1:07:27You on the money train. You know what I'm saying? When this tour finish, I got to hope you don't even change your number on me. Nah. My 410's been the same for 15 years. The peptide niggas.
