In short
Joey “Skinny” Merlino discusses Philly mob history, RICO prosecutions, prison conditions (solitary confinement “the box” and “the hole”), and how he believes media/internet narratives about “rats” are often distorted. He also promotes his cheesesteak brand and talks about loyalty codes and “don’t tattletale” lessons.
Guest backgrounds
Joey Merlino is a South Philadelphia figure associated with the mob/organized crime world (described as “allegedly” a former gangster). Hosts include Cal Penn (Earsay intro) and the Joe and Jada Show hosts (“Joe Crack the Dom” and “Jada”), who frame the conversation around Philly culture and cheesesteaks.
Key claims
Merlino says people fear him because of newspaper portrayals; he argues many “rat” claims online are for views and are “half true.” He claims cooperating informants often avoid arrest and can earn large salaries. He describes RICO as racketeering influence/corrupt organization and says he faced multiple RICO-related cases. He asserts prison staff and the system psychologically break inmates, and he criticizes law enforcement incentives for informants.
Notable examples
He cites alleged false documentary portrayals and mentions a case where he says he was acquitted/convicted on limited charges (gambling/receiving stolen property). He recounts “the box”/solitary confinement descriptions, and stories about informants disappearing mid-trial and “confidential informants” in jail. He also repeatedly references Philly cheesesteak lines and praises Steve Matarano’s cheesesteaks.

3:24Fat Joe:The people love us. Everybody in Philly loves us. Philly's a different world. Like it's south, especially south Philly. It's like Blue Cloud. Like everybody supports everybody. But you got to live there. Everybody's nuts. Fucking nuts.
3:50Yeah, yeah, what up, y 'all? This is Joe Crack the Dom. You know who it is, your boy Jada. This is the Joe and Jada Show. Every show legendary, every show iconic. And today is just that. Legendary and iconic.
4:08Fat Joe:When you think of today's guest, you think of South Philadelphia. That's right. You think of stand-up. God, you think a solid individual. I love him because he hates rats. And you should hate rats too if you got any integrity. Think of one of the best cheesesteak, cheesesteak lines, brands, establishments that's popping. No matter how close you are to New Jersey, Philadelphia area. You got to stop by his chain. They got the best cheesesteaks, the best service, the best von's way of cheesesteaks establishments in the world right now. Yes, they do. You just think of somebody. The man, not the myth, the one and only.
5:02Let me go a little more.
5:04Fat Joe:Let me go a little more. You think of somebody with swag because he got that swag. He keep that shit on, keep a good left arm on, a good shoe. And I admire and appreciate that. So I got to throw that in. Without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, make some noise for our guy, Joey Berlino. Thank you, guys. Thank you, my brothers. Appreciate it. Thanks for having me on. Joey, you ever felt like people are scared of you, Joey? You got your flags over there, because there's going to be a lot of flags. No, what? Why is there a lot of flags? No, not that. No, I got to be honest with you, because of your reputation or, you know, who you are.
5:43Have you ever been with somebody and you said, I could tell you my response, but have you ever felt like people were scared of you? I mean, I think they believe like what they read in the paper and news, you know, the fake news, all that bullshit that they portray as a fucking animal. It bothers me where people I really, really like, I could tell they're scared of you. I don't know if you if that has happened to you somebody that you really love and trust and you say something that you totally don't mean not like and you can see their reaction is like they're scared like has that ever happened to you
6:21Fat Joe:I mean if it's a good friend if you're my friend you ain't supposed to be scared I love you I love you yeah that's how I feel that's how I feel but that's why it really hurts me when I you know say something to a friend that I really love and then I noticed their reaction is like scared. You know what I mean? Anyway, that's some other shit. Joey Molino, man, living legend, at least allegedly. Is this an interview or interrogation? Talk to him about fucking Franks and fucking Billy G. Let me hear you, Agent Murdoch. Let me hear what you got to say. Let me hear this. how's the Phillies man what do you fucking want me to say you know your name way before I ever met you your name in Philly rang bells like on another level I don't want to compare you to nobody but here we had John Gotti over there he said your name like that you know before I ever met you in the middle of the hood oh we got you know y 'all got Gotti we got Joey Valino allegedly that shit that shit gotta be crazy, huh?
7:34Fat Joe:Well, you know what it is. We help everybody. So they don't, they don't like that. The people love us. Everybody in Philly loves us. Philly's a different world. Like it's South, especially South Philly. It's like blue cloud. Like everybody supports everybody, but it's, it's like, you gotta live there. Everybody's nuts. Fucking nuts. Everybody's nuts. But see, like where you grew up, like you're from the hood. You're from the projects. Yeah. The projects ain't like fucking Manhattan. It's like South Philly, you know what I mean? It's just different. It's a whole different world. It's a whole different world.
8:04Fat Joe:Different upbringing. Yeah. But to be notorious in a city full of Looney Tunes they look at you like you're the supreme Looney Tunes. Yeah, they must think I'm fucking. They're like, shit, right? They're like, yo, this guy's crazy than everybody. He hit about the time he hit him with the bicycle? Yeah. You know, this shit you know, that shit ain't no excuse him.
8:30No, I respect the culture and all that. We got a problem with hip hop, right? So you get all these gangs. These guys used to be gangstas. They get a podcast. Or alleged gangstas. Because if I don't know you, you're not really a gangster. Personally, I'm telling you, and I'm not saying this in no funny way. if you from New York City and you from anywhere near the Bronx Harlem anything like that and I don't know you I have to question your stripes because to me you're not a real guy because I know the worst of the worst the nicest of the nicest if I don't know you I don't know you on a podcast talking crazy shit that maybe you was in jail doing some shit because if I don't know you you're not really a gangster like that right so these guys usually by default disgruntled employees shit like that.
9:26They come out here they start talking someone's shit on this this fucking YouTube shit oh my God. Once they figure it out, but you guys y 'all got it worse than us. You have it even worse than us.
9:44Fat Joe:They're fucking jealous. I don't even know them. You know what's good with that? I'm with my artist. We shooting a video at his restaurant. And then a few days, I see this guy talking shit about me. Yeah! Because of him. You snuck. Yeah, just because I'm cool. I went to eat. I went with my family to eat the cheesesteak. And by the way, besides Matarano, shout out Steve Matarano, your cheesesteak is my favorite cheesesteak in the world. I mean, nobody can fuck with you. You came a couple of times to your family. Yeah, I came down there a couple of times to my family. but as soon as I left we had like a rat he gotta be a rat right fuck that Joe you pussy you with Joe these guys but they got worse that's the same guy no no no that's just the one that's their you know we all got a defector we got a a fucking now you ain't down now you can't leave one of those guys that we never see they talk shit these people living a life of fear they're at a home Don't dare to Dunkin' Donuts right now scared to death.
10:51They go on that computer and they don't realize they diss motherfuckers till they turn the wrong corner. But we leave it at that. But what I'm saying to you is one day I'm looking at the fucking Instagram and there's a guy on Instagram. It's not you. And he obviously was like in the game and rat it. Or any one of them talking, besides you, anyone talking is a rat on your side. Is that not true?
11:18Fat Joe:Yeah, true. And so when this guy gets on there with this guy, with scary stuff, this guy, because I know. I know the difference. Even if you write, I know who's real, who's not. This guy goes. This one, I knew y 'all had it worse than us. This guy's Johnny Depp. What's an Italian, a common Italian last name? Last name? Any Italian common? Marino. Marino. Marino. Johnny Marino, you got a day to get in touch with me. And this is a rat. Like, you know, he's Sammy the Bulldog. I'm going to do the 12 chapters. Start with little Johnny who got killed in the cab station. No! I'm sitting in my pants and I'm not Johnny Marino.
12:10I'm looking, I said, where the fuck? This shit take a turn. I don't want to believe this guy, but I think he knows something. He's like, it's going to be the 12 chapters of I'm Telling. We're going to start with the cab driver over there. You saw that shit?
12:30Fat Joe:It's all lies. It's all bullshit. They just want to give views. That's why I don't go back. I go back. I get mad sometimes. I go back. I don't even want to mention their names. We mention their names, then they could come back. They want me to talk about them. Who the fuck's going to watch? If you watch their videos, like the thumbnail, it's always Joey Molino. Like, they did one a couple weeks ago. Joey Molino's rat tried to rob me. Fuck, I got to do with him. He ratted on me. But it gets views. That's what they do. Joey, there's a guy that's famous in the Bronx because he ratted on me in Big Pun.
13:02We allegedly beat him up. Most of them over the bridge. This guy sits in the old school. I don't even know what happened, Joe. Joe, it used to be a time these guys can't sit around in the joint and all that. This guy's in the old school joint with all the old school gangsters that really did 20, 30 years. He's sitting there. And when you walk in, it's the guy who told on Fat Joe. Like, that's his shit. Like, he's famous for writing on Fat Joe in Big Pun.
13:30Fat Joe:But I believe the guys that sit with him in there and know he's a rat, they're just as bad as him. Don't say that. He did 20, 30 years. I'm just saying, though, what the fuck he condoning him for. If you didn't know, it's different. Rich went to one of them old school shits. That ain't Kiss Cafe, right? It's better. My coffee's better than that. And you like that, it's going to be better. I seen a clip of him, you yourself, you're doing an interview and I guess they was asking you you know, I'm partly Italian so they was asking you about Italians and you like good people is good people, red, black, green, whatever 11 of them ratted on me.
14:12Fat Joe:I'm like, wow, that's some deep shit. I got an Italian spreader. When I was in jail, I went to Beaumont, USP Beaumont. Some people used to write me. Bloody Beaumont. Any Italians in there? There really wasn't. I don't think one. Wow. I'm like, no, it's a shame. I said, no, fucking 11 Italians put me here. Fuck, I care if they're here. That's crazy. I mean, it's the truth. I was there with the Prince. Prince, yeah, shout out to Prince. You already know when it's a real moment, you need a real bottle. That's why we rock with 1800 Tequila. Y 'all heard me? These people been making tequila for 11 generations.
14:48That's right, 11. That's a legacy. That's OG status. OG. They were the first to introduce a Nejo, set the standard before most of these brands even existed. And you could taste the difference for real. The 1800 Cristalino and Reposado was what we've been on lately. Smooth, clean, elevated No burn, no rough edges Just a premium pour that speaks for itself You know when something is just built right? That's what this is Real talk, that's just what it is It's always around for the best nights The wins, the celebrations The remember that night story Whether you're keeping it low-key with the crew Or you're pulling up to a big event 1800 fits every setting It ain't trying too hard It's just that
15:37Fat Joe:1800 tequila, real legacy, real smooth. That's the move. True, true, true. One. You know, you're the first former gangster or alleged gangster that we bring on the show. We know a lot of them. And they're all trying to come up here. They're all, yo, let me tell my story. You know, this, this, that. And it's the first time me and Kiss mutually agreed to like, all right, Skinny Joe got to come up here and talk to you. I love it. because we know too many gangsters. They want to come up here and tell their story and this, that. It's all good, but you know. A lot of lies, though. A lot of false narratives I always see.
16:18Fat Joe:Especially with the internet now. When we was coming up, it was none of that. When he was coming up, it was my internet. So now you can just bump out some bullshit. You know why? Because my era when I was in the street, A lot of good guys, you know. Well, a lot of rats, too, but not as much as now. But it was a lot of guys took their time, did time with you and the feds and all that. Did 20 years, 30 years, they come back. So now they got guys documenting that era. The guys from my era, you know, for some reason, everybody wants their story told. As much as you say, yo, we don't want nobody. Because that used to be, everybody didn't want this shit.
17:03Fat Joe:Now it's switched to blah, blah, blah, blah. If you see a serial killer, the motherfucker's dying of cancer. His last day, he starts saying, I killed 96 people. He starts telling. You know, he's gone. He's dying. He wants a story to be told. So everybody, whether they like it or not, whether they the realest ever done it, this and this, they kind of like people telling their story somehow. He's got guys documenting that era. And I tell Rich, I said like this. So you say, they doing it. They documenting all the legends and they hit one. Pow! We coming with the story of such and such. How we killed and people OD'd and this.
17:44That crime was never solved. Right. Oh. So you got to be careful what you wish for with people telling your story. Right. And they start speaking on crimes that never been told. And then, you know, a few people know who was behind that, but, you know, that's the 80s. It's over. But they bringing it back up brand new.
18:09Fat Joe:Yeah, ain't no statue on that shit. How you look at that type of situation? I see them do a fake documentary on you. The minute I see the rats on there, you know it's fake. Yeah. Like, so they talk about you. Some shit might be true, but, you know, how do you feel when they do that? It's half true. You're hooked up with Netflix. Tell Netflix I'll do a real documentary. That's right. It's my, like the truth. Half of it's true. Yeah, half of the shit was true. But only half of it. They just, you know. I was watching the Philadelphia Mafia documentary and the best part is at the end. They said, Joey Molino denies it.
18:47Fat Joe:I said, fuck. Fuck your fuck. But they never said in the whole documentary, like they brought up murder, shooting. I got to quit it. They don't leave. they leave that out they don't yeah why like I got acquitted I got convicted and we told the jury gambling which we gambled receiving stolen property that's it who hasn't bought a Chanel bag from the booster like what the fuck like fell off the truck but all the other shit we didn't do and the rats lied though they the US attorneys they thought they had like like they thought they had it Well, they thought that whatever the guy said was gospel. You know what I mean?
19:29Fat Joe:Until we did our investigating and we caught him dead lying. I mean, it saved our lives. I don't believe that, Joey. I don't think they believed him either. I think they just see if they got enough to get a guy that they really want. Like he said, when you do good for people and they ain't there. You know how many people I got out of jail? About 30. Everybody that told on me never got caught doing a crime with me. ain't like me like me and you got we robbed the bank and i saw yeah i told on you they got caught doing their own thing like ralph metalli him his son his son-in-law they sold meth it was his third time he was getting life with no parole never getting out he told on me he got out and fucking pete the crumb he killed 33 people motherfucker serial killer why they call him the crumb because he was a filthy motherfucker he lied to about that my lawyer asked him on stand they call you pete the crumb.

33:14Fat Joe:How long they had it and how long did they been using it for the wrong day? I know, like, listen, not everybody in jail is innocent. I know a lot of guys. I know three, four guys right now. Marty Tassetta, he's in 33 years dead innocent. 33 fucking years, they're all in the mouth. Then there's two guys at Vic Arena. There's a guy, he's 93 years old, in a wheelchair, dementia, bad heart and blind. He's got 35 years and let him home. Let him go home and die with his family. I won't let him home. Motherfuckers. I just saw that shit the other day. There was a guy who went in there for a body and I watched the judge and the lady told him, she said, sir, Mr.
33:53Such is that your last breath will be in jail. That was her shit telling me. You know what I get the problem with? the fucking police and all this. We respect the police. I performed for them last week in Madison Square Garden. We did the policeman's ball. But let me explain something. Oh. I want to know why when they get caught, they kill themselves. They can't be the time. They wake up. Imagine you wake up every day. Your job every day is to throw somebody in jail. Yo, high five. She's going for 15. Yeah. We got this mother. Yo, let's rush in the house. The minute the motherfuckers slip on a banana peel,
34:37Fat Joe:this shit ain't even no real time. They got three years. They kill themselves on the stop. Why they can't do the time? Because everybody in there is waiting for them. Bullshit. Why you can't do the time? My thing is, all right, you got me. Or you got to prove that you got me. And I got to get my lawyer. We got to get this together. We got to do what we got to do. You mean to tell me when you get in trouble, you gotta kill yourself you can't handle what you're doing to people every imagine every single day your job is to put people in jail I can't imagine and the minute you get locked up or you're about to get locked up you kill yourself sick how they do it too I had a motherfucking when I was in a hole they had me in a hole for like 8-9 months in Farrington and this fucking psychiatrist would come by.
35:32Fat Joe:I'd be sleeping. And he'd kick the door like to wake me up. Every day, wake me up. I said, listen, motherfucker. Don't wake me the fuck up no more. No, I got to check on. Fuck you, I'm fine. Every day with the fuck, he coming to suit on the... I told him, if I put you in here for one day, you'd hang yourself. You'd kill yourself. Yeah. Leave me the fuck alone. Fucking keep on my mind. That's in you, man. Yeah. Oh, that's in you. No, no, I don't even think that's right. They do that to make you go crazy. They're trying to break you. Listen, motherfucker. They'll break you in a fucking, you in a solitary confinement.
36:04Did you go in the hole when you was in? Hell no. That shit, that shit. But like, I would. I would. But if I went in the hole, what the fuck I'm going to do? Spit bars, nigga. I'll be Tupac, LL Cool J, J.K. I'll be spitting in the world. I'll be like, yo, supercalifragilisticexpialidocious shit, nigga. I'll be wrapping my ass off in a fucking solitary confinement.
36:30Fat Joe:They do it all night. Marion had bars. They used to bang, boom, and fuck all night. They got you. What the fuck you got to do? You got to stay sane. That is possibly the worst thing you can do to a human being on the planet Earth. People ask me, what was the hole like? I said, lock yourself in your bedroom with no phone and no TV. That still ain't it. At least you know if you barely suffer enough, you go get the drop of candy juice. Over here, you ain't getting shit. No, the box is the box. The box is meant to break you down in a different fucking way. It's not human. It's for like lab rats. Not meaning like snitches.
37:10Lab rats. And even make them fucking rats go crazy. Let me ask you one thing. You're in the, not you. You're in the mafia. Alleged mafia. you put in your work you this this that whatever the case may be you get caught you know not to tell what you told what makes you come outside in front of a podcast and act like you're still a gangster you're still a member of that
37:44Fat Joe:snuff gets threatened every day every day your poor snuff I see snuff on my You're an innocent bison. I see stuff. I see everybody. Come on, crack. Everybody cursing. Let me hear this. I'm going to smash his head. I see him. I'm going to run him over every day. If we said that, I could be locked up in a minute. They got a license. They got a license. Yeah, but you're not listening to me, Joe. Joe, this happens to you every day. So you're so numb to it. Okay, I snitch, right? Joe snitch, this, this, that. I'm going to live in Arizona or in a fucking barn somewhere. you'll never see me again protect what that shit witness protection something what are you doing with the camera acting like you're the same guy that used to walk in the restaurant in Brooklyn and kiss people on the cheeks and act like you're respected and that you still there talking like you're a gangster that blows my mind people support them too in a major way I don't know.
38:48Fat Joe:They love it. See that? What's the guy that snitched? What's his name? Joey A-like? Johnny A-like? Johnny A-like. Johnny A-like. He's a snitch. Yeah. They support him. And I see his Instagram sometimes because the algorithm and they be like, hey, Johnny, you looking good. I'm like, yo, what happened? I thought these guys were banished. They're like fucking Ben Laden. Yeah. Get out of here. Oh, crazy. Save me the bull. That motherfucker killed 19 people. 41:06Fat Joe:They hate me. I had fucking... I think I had four Rico cases. I don't even know what the fuck Rico is. I have four cases. this racketeer yeah right I don't the jury don't understand I know a guy that got arrested one time in the Rico case he was the mechanic I went to high school he did 10 years all he was was a mechanic he never sold the drug he never this he used to fix their cars right and they fucking locked them up he was fixing the cars that was transporting the drugs that's what happens no but it's I had a friend of mine who had a case, Eddie Brandino. When the jury was deliberating, they asked the judge what co-defendant's Rico.
41:50Fat Joe:They thought Rico was a co-defendant. It's the fucking law. They thought it was a guy. They said, which one's Rico? Ain't no fucking Rico here. Oh, I always say they named Rico after the Italian guy. Yeah. So Rico, just classify to us what Rico means just for the people watching. What does that mean? A group of people? Racketeering influence, a corrupt organization. Corrupt organization That's what I mean Rico That's what Rico stands for We don't talk about bad stuff But they They recently Knocked up a rapper Who's the first one ever With no co-defendants And they charged him with Rico Rico One person Would he talk to himself?
42:28Fat Joe:I knew I knew as soon as he got charged He did it They charged him with Rico By himself He beat that easy He beat that easy He charged him by himself Yeah there you go He got fucked No I'm saying With Rico He got He wasn't even supposed to have Rico case. Fuck that Enrico case. By himself. But when they charged him with that, I thought some other good brothers was going to get caught up in the shit. They were going to bring them in. Right. You know what I'm saying? Because I'd never seen a one human being, a person getting charged with that. I got locked up on a Enrico case in New York, Southern district in 2016 at 46 co-defendants.
43:04Fat Joe:I knew four of them. Yeah. Wow. I never seen the people in my life. The other fucking 42. I never seen them. And they all said you was the boss, huh? I'm the only guy who went to trial. They all pled. I went to trial. I got a hung jury, but the judge hated me, that motherfucker. He won't let me play my tapes. And then I pled. I'm the only guy who went to... No, I got two years from making a bet. No. Making a bet. Making a bet. A bet. The whole world would be locked. Have you ever seen guys disappear, meaning you don't wish bad on nobody, but, hey they lock us up Snuff is there I'm there Jadakiss there he's there Johnny ain't with us in the cell like have you ever been in that situation where you just like yo what happened to Johnny like but you're not telling on Johnny you don't wish him bad but yo where the fuck is Johnny he was splitting the money with us every night I was on trial for robbing an armored car me and this guy Richie Brougham now we started trial we picked the jury his lawyer made his opening statement and my lawyer made you know His lawyer got upset.
44:08Fat Joe:He got an alibi. He was in a casino in Atlantic City. He never robbed the armored car. The next day was a holiday. There was no court. The next day we had court. I go into court. We got starts like 930. We're in a hallway like nine o 'clock. I'm like, where the fuck's Richie at? He ain't there. The lawyer get up, the judge said, oh, Mr. Verong is cooperating now. He's with the federal government. You flipped him. I should have never. I fucked up. The lawyer fucked up. The lawyer asked for a mistrial. I should have never asked for it. you know we gave him time they postponed it and they told him what to say my lawyer can't kill them you were here yesterday saying you had an alibi now you're what i'm talking about it's not that i know richie barone told yeah he told no guys yeah i've been in situations where we're in a cell and where the fuck is johnny like we're all there everybody's there the morning shift the afternoon shift the night shift the table where the fuck is this thing if I'm on the phone I'm obviously talking to him like where's him he's a cooperator he's with them he's a what he called a confidential informant where he just don't go to jail he don't go to jail man you can't throw dirt one thing I don't do one thing I don't do cause it was done to me right back in the days we counting money, a lot of money.
45:35Right? This shit made me cry. Cry. Because it's like five of us, we counting a lot of money. And my brother was divorced. And it was like$5 ,000 we thought was missing. And out of the whole six people counting money, my brother looks at me like, yo, Joe, how you going to take the$5 ,000? Yo, man, I start crying like a baby. I said, you think I stole from you? It's my own brother, rest in peace. you think i stole from you all these fucking derelict motherfuckers in here and you thinking me it's six we counted it again we found the five that taught me to never accuse if it's a cleaning lady in my house is anybody i will not accuse you if i don't catch the fucking bear trap on your hand i want i just won't i know how it made me feel but getting back to what you said they're
46:27Fat Joe:confidential informants. They never get arrested. They work. They make $80 ,000 a year. It's a career? No, it's a career. Yeah. There might be 100 ,000 of them in New York. They're all over. Philly, they never get locked up. I just want you to know original terrorist squad there was a little guy. There was a little guy that was like number two or three, four in the pyramid. We never heard your name in that indictment or nothing like that. Just know. I could never, I will never say somebody's a rat if I can't prove it one million percent. But I wondered, the other day I'm driving up the FDR with Rich, I see your rich, man.
47:07How come Johnny wasn't in there with us? Like, this is 40 years later. Because he still got a good reputation in the street. Everybody, like, I want to know if I drove the Benz, the nigga had the Beamer. If I ate the steak, he ate the fucking chicken. about this. Why Johnny wasn't with the 46?
47:29Fat Joe:Johnny's still working for them. I'm telling you. There's bookies in Philly. But, you know, bookmakers. I'm so up to say, please, man. Back in the days, bookies. Fuck! The guys been booking for 50 years. Their houses got raided, took the shit up. They never, ever had a case. They always went away. Never went to Philly. I got three bookmakers. I never took a bet in my life. I'm a bettor. I'm a gambler. I'm not a bookie. They're confidential. No, no, what's the Dominican do? Washington Heights, Hunter Summers, you definitely know this guy. That guy was at every party popping the most bottles, Lamborghini, this, this, that, Ferrari through Washington Heights through the Bronx, this, this, that.
48:10They said that motherfucker finally got caught like 20 years later. He was like, what are you having me here for? They're like, sir, you have sold the most drugs in Washington Heights for the last 20 years. What are you talking about? I don't know why you're out of here. This nigga told on his socks.
48:32Fat Joe:Yo. That nigga told on everything. Smoking 20 years of popping bottles. Fucking the baddest bitches that this Lamborghini. He thought, but he seriously, is there somebody who has an IQ enough to think they're not doing the crime? Is there such a thing? It's not cool. So they said he looked like He said yo It wasn't in there He said like Everything No he just was like yo I don't know why he ain't here Niggas looking at him like yo my man You been feeding the hood for 20 fucking years You got lab bikini You never had a job in your life I don't know why he's doing here What is going on That nigga got out of there He thought he was late That's what I'm trying to tell you Like is he dumb enough or his IQ low enough for him to really think he was doing something legal?
49:26Fat Joe:I seen a motherfucker pinching a pill. A drug proof. They put him down as a leader. He told him his mother. They gave his mother the leadership. He said, no, I wasn't. My mother. They locked the mother up. She got a life sentence. Yeah, I seen that. Fucking sick. And he left it like that? He didn't fix it. He didn't try to shut up. My thing is, what I'm trying to tell everybody, and God bless everybody. And I say this all the time. We did a DVD one time. They put every rapper, they put every rapper, yo, snitches, get snitches. Yo, you come, I throw you off the balcony. Yo, I'll kill this nigga if he snitches this, that, this, this, this.
50:05They come to me. And in fact, Joe, what happened? Hey, drive with a license. Don't walk in between green. And don't do the crime if you can't do the time, buddies. That's where I'm at in that DVD. Right. because if you can't do the time, then don't do the crime because I got a feeling that law enforcement jerks off, literally busts off to you telling on your friends. You don't know how many times they might've came out of there like, fuck, Johnny the Rock. He's telling on Winnie. No way. He like, ah, went to the back. Because you can't tell on your enemies. If that's the case, I'd have been in jail for 10 ,000 years.
50:58An enemy? None of the enemies went in there and said, Fat Joe did this and this and that, but they're not close enough to prove it. It got to be your friend, your family who tells on their mother. It got to be, it's like, and so I think that's the whole addictiveness to it. Like, you know, you gamble, you're addicted. you drink liquor you're addicted you smoke drugs the thing with law enforcement that they most addicted to is how they don't want you to tell on them guys that you don't like they want you to tell on your man we've been watching you Joey for the last 10 years you know your man you hang out with all the time Vinnie the Scar we want him we want you to tell on your man then you can go home not just tell we want you to tell on your brother like you know that's the shit that gets him off
51:49Fat Joe:yeah no it's fucking nuts it's scary yeah it's never your enemy listen I I'm a couple guys testified they threw one guy out I mean I know him like I they threw him out yeah but they called him lying but all all they did was come in and say Joey told me to do it that's it I faced I faced the death penalty twice and the motherfuckers went home they killed the guy but they said I told him to do it fuck you need me to fucking tell you to kill somebody that's how easy they make it for them I got caught with two guns right it was me no no no I gotta be honest the cops these cops used to pull me over every day they knew I didn't have a license so you wanna know how crazy it is somebody came to get me they got beat up this guy came turned out to be the worst guy we ever knew in the history of mankind kind.
52:47But at the time, I'm cool with him and I'm so dumb. I run upstairs, get two guns. Come on, let's go. Right. So we get in the coma. My man's driving. I'm on the passenger side. He's behind us. And the fucking cops pull us over. Right. So I go and I put two guns under my seat. Right. These cops stop me every day. The same cop. Licensing registration, the driver. We had the one good guy in the whole crew. Gives them the license. There's no tinted windows. Get out the car. We're going to search the car. This, that. They find the two guns under my seat. They beat me up. You could have killed us, you scumbag.
53:27You could have fucked us up. This, this. We go to the precinct. I'm dumb. I'm young. This before wraps. I'm about to take the blame for the two guns. I'm like, yo, this ain't, because these other two guys were borderline, not criminals. I was like, yo, you know, don't worry I'll take the blame this and that so the guy I went for he was like yo this ain't right I know the law at the time we were big drug dealers so we had the right lawyers we go to preliminary case so we sitting there all three of us we all got three lawyers the best lawyers in the and my man's months gets up in the middle of the preliminary job those are your guns Joey Those are yours I'm looking at him like Yo!
54:18Those are your guns Joey And she walks outside I say Is this nigga dry snitching on me Or something Like he let his moms Say this shit In front of the judge And all that I'm sitting there like this More to the story The lawyers start Questioning the cops No probable cause To put it over No probable cause Was that a drug area No, it was in front of a church. Did he have tinted windows? No. Did he give you a license? No. So why did you stop this car? He said, because that's fucking Joey, the drug dealer. He's a piece of shit. All my lawyers started high-fiving. I was scared to death. I thought I was going to jail for 100 years.
55:04I was like, oh, my God. He was like, oh, no. And we beat the case. And the judge, I never forget the speech. I'm one of them guys. as the judge gave me that speech, he said, listen, these guys did not put that gun, them guns in your car. It's all about the cops. These are good guys. You have it. Come here. I'm going to charge you for this one. I'm going to really block you. I said, all right, fuck it. Let me not do no more crime like this and go straight and start rapping or something like that. Because it's like, you know, but it was a legal search and seizure, man. But, man, motherfuckers get jammed up all the time.

But he's never ready to play. Yeah, he's never ready. What are you doing?
1:24:42You scared to get rid of him because... The process. Yeah, because... Nah, the process is over with. We're done with that, yeah.
1:24:50Fat Joe:They fucked that up. Ben Simmons, they took, too. He fucked it up, too. That's what I am. But he just went crazy. Tracy McGrady was on his whole party of... We could have had tater. Really? Said he was... No, no. Ben Simmons was good when y 'all took him. I don't know what happened. He went mentally... Fucking nuts. Nuts. Tracy McGrady is one of the best ever. These guys don't play. They played three games. They're out five games, two games. Back in the day, Michael Jordan, I was telling you. They played through fever, flu, anything. That young boy. Oh, VJ. Esco was great. He's good. He ain't no joke.
1:25:24Great. He ain't no joke. Yeah, he's good. Yeah. But that's what's fucked up the most. Like Joey said, nobody plays. I just want to get busy. I want to get busy.
1:25:32Fat Joe:That motherfucker nasty, bro. Well, imagine if your family spends$3 ,000,$4 ,000 to go see LeBron play. Ready? and you all get to the game and 20 minutes before the game, he's not playing. You don't give a fuck no more. You just brought your kids there to see LeBron James for the first time and he's out. That's what happens when Embiid all the time. My thing is, when Embiid, you got to figure out what you're going to do. You can't do nothing now. You're stuck. Nobody's taking it. You're fucking paying 70 million. You can't get rid of him. How many years you got in the... They just did an extension.
1:26:01He's done. That's what I mean. Oh, man. Reinvent the process.
1:26:05Fat Joe:Yeah. No, no. They fucked up. Now Tyrese Maxey, superstar. True. Plays hard every single game. He plays every fucking minute that he can. They're going to get... Paul George is... Yeah, he's the same shit. He's over too. He's not playing a lot. His shit is over too. Another guy gets out. But he robbed you. Yeah. Big time. Ben Simmons. They got a guy who robbed the fucking Mets. He got paid for 40 years. Yeah, he's still getting paid. Still getting paid. Bobby Bonilla. Bobby Bonilla. He gets a million dollars. Good for him. Good for Bobby. God bless. He's in the goal. Oh, no. Yeah. Still getting paid.
1:26:36Fat Joe:I thought it was last year It was August 3 Nah Two more They gotta pay him For a long time August 3rd August 2nd His cousin He ain't got his own date Bobby Vanilla August 1st August 2nd Every cousin in the world Is in his fucking house Bobby I got an idea July 1st Every year July 1st Bobby I got a new idea I wanna sell Mitten gloves Hot dog stands I see parts Yeah They come from that I had trouble with my uncle, man. You see, you guys don't know I fall on the sword. I talk a lot of shit, but I got to back it up. I told a story about my uncle, my favorite uncle, my Uncle Will. He hustled me for three at the home, Frank for the drugs.
1:27:20I never seen one. He said he was going to open up by the hospital. He was going to open up this, this day. He told me in front of his wife. We went to dinner in San Diego. He said, man, you're dissing me on this show, Joe. I love you, man. Why you? I said, yo, you know what, Uncle Will?
1:27:35Fat Joe:Uncle Will, we love you, Uncle Will. Just never seen the cards. Uncle Will got you? I've been scammed for all type of shit. Are you fucking kidding me, motherfucking son? Now they come up with some good shit. I got friends. I got a big heart, so I got friends that have asked me for the most wildest. If they asked you, you'd be like, what the fuck? I can't even start. Like, motherfuckers will ask me to do something for them. It's insane. Like you sitting there and it's insane. Yo, I owe 300 ,000 in debt. This, this, that, the word. You buy it and I'll pay you a thousand a month. I just like, yo, bro, what makes you think I want to buy 300 ,000 in debt money?
1:28:23And if I don't give it to you, then I'm a bad guy. You're no good motherfucker.
1:28:25Fat Joe:I'm someone that asked you to pay their mortgage off the other day, right? They'll borrow 700 ,000 a month. 700 ,000 they need. 2 ,000 a month for life. I'll be 160 when they pay back. What is it on Instagram? Like, who messaged somebody that on Instagram? Yeah, on Instagram. You see? I'm a firm believer you spend all your money. Yeah. I think you should spend all your money and die broke. Yeah. And enjoy it. Why figure it out? Enjoy it. Because they always, they're going to come, yo, guys, Joe is really fond of Tyrone. My father's going to come in my house, sleep on my pillow. you want to do a hard rock bet what's the ratio of a guy dies and his wife gets with another motherfucker publicly what is it is it a year's time i say i say come back be like yo he loved tyrone tyrone was a fuck you i got a guy he was all about his family and his wife.
1:29:24I mean, this guy was fucking shooting a cathedral for his family. She comes, yo, I found the guy, Joey, you know, this and this. I'm like, my phone goes off. That's crazy. I go like this. I said, what's the over-under? Because I'm just like, found the guy. And he said, yeah, Joe, you know, he's a good guy. This motherfucker could come back. If he could get a furlough. This thing was going on. He's going to kill that nigga right on channel 7. Six months is minus 180. No, no, not six months. Oh, that's the odd. One day. Eight motherfucking hours. Eight hours. You give him eight hours, he come and kill that shit.
1:30:08Everybody. Probably the wife, too. Everybody. You can't break that. They did him bad? No, it's just you have a wife. You have a family. You protect. And you love.
1:30:22Fat Joe:I'm saying we already know that part It's never the right amount of time Or is it five years I think never is the right amount of time When you die Your wife is supposed to just wiggle out And never have nothing Yeah Yeah Cobwebs in the pussy That's it Oh shit One thing you don't do Is introduce a motherfucking my house with my money I done left you trying to take care of you. My pillows. Talking about my guys like Jerome. Fuck you, bitch. We go.
1:31:00Not now, not never. Fuck you. And Jerome. Motherfucker come around in my shit. You know, he in the fucking bands. He's chilling. Yo, what's up, guys? Are you kidding me, man? Fuck out of here, man. It's happening. It happens. Happens rapidly. Often. So what you think is the over-under on that shit?
1:31:21Fat Joe:180, six months. Six months. I think they move on within six months. Within six months. Yeah. Even the ones that give the speeches. That's the worst ones. I love my... Worst ones. I'll never love again. Yeah, they're falling in the casket. Yeah. Yeah, I'll never love again. Take me with you. It's the love of my life. Take me with you. Yeah, they're holding on to it. Don't let it go in the ground. I wish it was me. Yeah, yeah. Six months later, she coming through with you. I'm hearing that shit. I like that cool. That mafia shit.
1:31:51Today I got a phone call. One of my guys, he passed away. His wife is fucking. He just called me just before. I said, you guys, I said, God damn. That soon? Yeah, she's fucking already. You know, such and such hooked up with such and such. This, this, that. And that's the name. What did she do wrong? I tell you what he did wrong. He left a bunch of money. Yeah. A bunch of money. so now somebody's on his boat somebody's on his mansion somebody's on his this somebody's on his that who is wrong though no no no guy comes in as a bystander don't know the guy Jerome is never wrong
1:32:30Fat Joe:you don't know nobody he's gonna fuck her and he's good Jerome hit the power ball yeah Jerome hit the power ball yeah yeah yeah Jerome it's never the guy's fault even if you don't even die it's never the guy's fault it's the guy's fault if you know him now if you over here shaking his hand every day you find out he's fucking your girl they might make a documentary about him Johnny A. Light might show up around 8.36 when I was hiding in child protective custody I seen Johnny kill the guy because he was fucking his wife. This shit amazes me, man. I like the podcast. Hip-hop is going bad with this rad shit.
1:33:22It's normal life. I like the podcast space. You know, just, you know,
1:33:26Fat Joe:the haters, they just keep coming and we, like he says, our haters are starting to like us. You know what I mean? That's what happens. We talk our shit. We talk sports. We talk culture. We talk Philly. Joey tells his stories. I mean, you know, that's just how we do it. You usually are on Netflix, right? Your podcast is on Netflix. Yeah. Netflix is. You're doing pretty good. That's good. NFL championship, early prediction. I got the Packers, 16-1. The Cheeseheads. That's who I like. That's a hell of a pick. Yeah. That's Lil Wayne's crew. Lil Wayne loves them guys. Yeah. The Eagles are always going to be somewhat in there.
1:34:00He's a kid.
1:34:00Fat Joe:But it depends what happens when he's a brown. There's a guy on the Eagles that works for the Eagles, a big guy. Big Dom. That's our buddy. That motherfucker takes care of autistic kids. Yeah, he's a good man. He gets back so much. He's a fucking good guy. No, he's a good guy. He's a real good guy. He comes to cheesesteak places. He's a good guy. Helps everybody. He's a fucking good guy, bro. Yeah. That guy, Big Dom, is a class act. You know what I'm saying? And, uh, but yeah, you know how this shit go, man. You know what happened to me? Uh, Tom Brady, the one sport, Fat Joe's bandwagon. I hate bandwagon.
1:34:39I got an uncle one year. he's the golden statusist next year he's Chicago boy I hate those guys but I'm like that in football because I don't really know football I never really liked it like that but Tom Brady I used to be like Tom Brady he's the fucking GOAT right so I looked at Tom Brady and there was championship games where he was down with one minute left I said well Joe if he's MJ if he's the GOAT you're going to find a way to win this shit And he did that time. But one time he won, I remember I was in Dubai. We was watching him. And I seen my man from Kansas City. He beat him. And I seen his face.
1:35:23The only face you see like that is on Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Tom Brady.
1:35:29Fat Joe:That face he had, the anger he had right there. I said, oh, no. This is my new guy. No. He had this one face. You know, we all got our own face. You bet. But there's an energy. There's an energy. He had this one face that I've only seen it in the grace of grace. He was sitting there mad. He was in his pocket. He lost it. He just, the camera came on him. I said, oh, no. This is the next one. You better. And sure enough, he won like two, three years after that. You got to have expression. I got to feel the passion. I got to feel the pain. Kobe had that killer in him. He wanted that ball. Magic Johnson, another one.
1:36:18Fat Joe:I think the basketball teams years ago were better than the ones there. You think so? Now they got steroids and all this shit. They got flagrant fouls. They had no flagrant fouls back then. They got fucking killed back then. That fight. Remember Rodman, the Pistons, the bad boys? They fucking clothesline you go to the basket. They put Jordan through the... I think this playoff, they've been letting them slightly play with a little bit more. I thought you would say they've been fucking Jay LeBronson up. Well, they're on them. They're on them. And you said Wimba Yamba caught a fucking concussion.
1:36:53And you know what they say? This is fucked up. Right? Because the bigger you are, the harder you fall. Man, I'm watching ESPN. Do you know what all these great analysts who make money off of sports say every last one of them. Well, of course it's going to be great. Beat him up. Gotta hit him, chop him to the ground. I'm looking at the analysts say this shit. They hit him so hard he hit his fucking head on the floor with a concussion. That's the only way to beat Wimba Yamba. The old NBA, everybody got a concussion. Everything.
1:37:28Fat Joe:It kept playing. Spurs are tough. They're going to be tough. Wimba Yamba, this is league for the next sophomore. Yeah, easy. Starting next year, nobody got a chance. It's fucking San Antonio for the next five or six years. They ain't even got a chance, bro. The whole team's good. The whole team's good, and he's... I'm talking about the whole entire league. Look, you see this guy the other day? I asked him to come, Patrick Ewing. I never seen him in an interview. He did the pivot, and I watched this podcast, and he was like, you know, even the great Patrick. Patrick, you know how many? Could somebody give me a stat?
1:38:09How many all-star? How many championships in college? Give me the stats.
1:38:15Fat Joe:One, two, Georgetown. One. One in Georgetown. Villanova beat him, though. 11-time NBA all-star. What else? Rookie of the year. Rookie of the year. How many points? We would call him a great player, a Hall of Famer. He didn't get the chip, but we would call him. I'm watching this interview and all he kept saying is, you know what, that guy played. He didn't even have to say it. This is Patrick doing the great. You know what, that guy played. Everybody. I mean, you tried. You wasn't winning. Like, you talking about Jordan? Yeah. That guy played. Be a close second. Here's a cigar, nigga. They all knew they was losing.
1:38:58Every last one of them knew they was losing. You know. because that guy in order to have been any other era we would have had four or five chips we had this and we had that the point I'm making is my friends that time
1:39:13Fat Joe:wait for the point that time is coming starting next year it's a win beamba I don't know when that guy if he gets he gotta get stronger don't count OKC out neither Sean Alexander's unbelievable I love those guys I seen a stat the other day nobody ever did. The Joker, he led the league in rebounds and assists. Nobody ever did that ever in the NBA. Yep, Joker. No joke. He's good, too. Very, very disappointed. I love the Joker. I can't believe it. Yeah, the team stinks, though. Yeah, but they got Mary. That guy, Mary, is good, too. I like him, but he's hot and cold. Mary, he sometimes will hit seven threes.
1:39:53Fat Joe:Next game, he goes 0 for 15. He's hot and cold. But the game in the NBA now is for shooters. They just shoot threes. Boston shoots 60 threes a game. That's crazy. Kick it out. Kick it out. We also hit every three. Miss every three. We like those games. Of course. I believe I believe the children are the future. Yeah, yeah. Listen, everybody. This ain't that. That ain't this. It's cracking kiss. Make some noise for Joey and Snuff, baby.
1:40:32Fat Joe:Thank you, my brother. Thanks for having us. Appreciate you. We'll do it again.

Fat Joe and Jadakiss sit down with South Philadelphia legend Joey "Skinny Joe" Merlino for a wide-ranging conversation about loyalty, the streets, and life after the game. Merlino breaks down his multiple RICO cases and the 11 cooperators who testified against him, tells Joe and Jada why anyone still talking publicly is almost certainly a rat, and explains how confidential informants operate as a full-time career. The guys chop it up about Sammy the Bull's second life, the difference between real and fake gangsters in the podcast era, and the wild realities of federal prison. Plus, Merlino talks about franchising his beloved Philadelphia cheesesteak brand all over the country.
