In short
Dr. Joe Marler’s “office” episode with Pete Wicks (Man Made podcast) focused on “never enough” masculinity/mental health, trauma, and self-worth. The hosts use a guided visualization (path/water/bear) and “ink and think” Rorschach-style prompts to provoke honesty, then end with a positive reinforcement exercise (“I am good at…”).
Key claims
Pete’s “Never Enough” tattoo and book theme traces to finding his mother after a suicide attempt at age 11 and believing she would leave him because he wasn’t enough; he copes by overdoing for others and seeking validation he can’t internalize. He argues mental health has no one-size cure—aim for more good days than bad.
Notable examples
tattoos of Sam Thompson; “Never Enough” in Latin; inkblot interpretations (including “angry jizzing cock”); dogs as unconditional love; fear of gorillas.
Guests
Pete Wicks (British reality/media personality; Scorpio; runs Man Made podcast; rugby background; tattoos; single at 37 in the episode). Hosts/guests in-room: Dr. Joe Marler and research assistant Jake.

1:55Why wait? We. Go. V. What happens if someone's to continually call you Peter? Someone of your size? Nothing.
2:06Joe Marler:Someone of my size? I'll kick the fuck out of you. Yeah, that's about right. I'm 37 and I'm still single. You're 37? Yeah. Fuck off. You think I was older? Yeah. No, no, no. I've done it again. Why have you just immediately, like, sort of stroked your nose? That's a telltale sign of a liar. That's the first thing that you've said that actually sounds like you know what you're talking about. I'm Joe Muller. And I'm good at... getting strangers to overshare. I'm Pete Wicks. And I'm good at insulting people. Oh, you think you're good at insulting people? Yeah. Fucking show me then.
2:51Joe Marler:Hello and welcome to my office. This is Joe Marler Will See You Now with me, Dr. Joe Marler. This is the show where I pop the bonnet of the minds of Britain's best loved celebrities and poke a belt to see what's rattling. With me as always is my trusty research assistant, Jake. Joe. Oh, good. Yes, I like it. Joe, how are you? I love it when you do this. Joe, how are you? It's a little bit like Rob Bryan's Ronnie Corbett. He does that a lot. How's your day been? Pleasant. Yes? Although it has been... It started off bad. Why? What happened? You know when you first wake? Yes. I mean, if I said no to that, you'd be like, what's going on here?
3:34Joe Marler:I know when you first wake. I'm aware of it. And I did a fart. I'll be straight with you. I did a fart. Right. And I sort of went to nod off again. It was like a little... like a little one little nice went to nod off again yeah and as I did and then as I've moved it's like wafted and I've gone fucking hell has the dog done a shit I thought the dog had done a purg downstairs again it wasn't it was me it was Maya Noose and I was quite I was disappointed in myself usually a lot of people and I know you lot out there you'll be sat there like I don't do this and I'm saying the same thing to you Jay a lot of people like smelling their own farts yeah yeah Yeah, I definitely do.
4:13Joe Marler:This occasion was bad. Oh, man. I did not go back for a second. Sniff. I, over the weekend, found out about a little psychological trick that apparently tells you a little bit about yourself. I'm intrigued. I'm intrigued as to whether I already know this trick because of the plethora of knowledge that I have. Yeah, of course, of course. I just thought as a doctor, you might want this in your arsenal. Okay, so close your eyes. I want you to picture yourself in a approaching a wooded area as you go into the wooded area I then want you to figure out is there a path or is there not a path you then come to a body of water what as in up to you brother up to you what it's a body full of water a body of water no one in the history of people saying the phrase body of water no one has ever thought it's someone who is just a body there bloated with too much water in them.
5:11Joe Marler:Yes, but that could be an accurate description of a body because we are 75 % water. Well, do you know what? This is interesting, actually, because I think it could still work. Imagine what your body of water is. It could be a puddle to a river, whatever it is. Is it flowing? Is it not? I then want you, finally, to come past the body of water and then you come to see and you see a bear. So I've stepped over the body and I see this grizzly bear. Yeah. And I want you to notice how this bear makes you feel and how you get past it. Do you run? Do you fight it? Do you sneak? What is it? Okay. All right.
5:51Joe Marler:Take a deep breath. Yeah. And open your eyes, my friend. Wow. Are you feeling good? Do you feel sort of back in the room? Now, each of these decisions... I never left the room. Each of the decisions you made have an impact on what you are as a person. So let's start. Was there a path? There was a couple of like fox, they used to call them foxholes. Oh. They'd dig out. See, this is interesting. Whether there's a path or not and how strict the path is, is how much you see yourself as having someone who plans out their entire life, who has a set path of how they want to get there. But it feels like, because you've got these little foxholes here and there, you've got general checkpoints of things you might want to get to in your life, but you're not set on it.
6:36Joe Marler:You're not set on it at all. Do you relate to that? Wow. Do you relate to that at all? What have you done? What have you done? What have you done? Next, body of water. Describe for me the body of water. Well, it was missing a leg.
6:54Joe Marler:it was a mix of blood and water to be honest with you right and I checked to see if they were still with us but they hadn't do you know what that represents? go on sex life right makes sense actually quite accurate and then finally the bear oh yeah yeah do you know what happened with the bear? please tell me stabbed in his left eye kicks it in his dick fucking hell yeah well it was dog eat dog mate bear eat bear the bear represents problems in life oh So the fact is you can attack him head on. Very interesting, Joe. I've learned a lot about you there. Do you know what's interesting for me? Yeah.
7:29Joe Marler:I'm meant to be the psych in this. Sure. I'm meant to be the one that knows it all. I've never heard of that exercise before. Really? And honestly you've really opened me up to the fact that there's no need for me to have heard that before because it's completely and utterly useless. It's quite shit, isn't it? Yeah.
7:53Joe Marler:I wonder what our next guest's body of water is like. What big body of water? Oh, Lakeside. Yeah, Lakeside. That's another clue. That's a very, very good clue. If we were to do the thing on him now, I would say he is, I think, maybe potentially more of a pessimistic person. Sure. But he shouldn't be because lovely guy. I don't think he does have a path set out for him. And I don't know how he deals with problems, but you're probably going to dig into that, I imagine. yeah shall we say who it is 3, 2, 1 it's Peter Wicks tattoos wise Pete's got a tattoo of Sam Thompson on him his best friend his best buddy what like Steve-O from Jackass yeah I was just wondering he's done that for him they got a podcast together would you ever do that for for someone you you're friends with at work never in a million years fine so we have a man who we're both excited to meet a prolific podcaster yeah who might teach us a few things but someone who I'm very intrigued to see how you get under the skin of.
8:54Joe Marler:I mean, do you have any tactics for this? He's going to be a tricky character. He's got this hard exterior. How do we actually tap into that and get him to open up a little bit more? Yeah. I think we agitate him. Yeah. And then disarm him maybe with a bit of love. Because I do really, really like him. Yeah. I find him really funny. Yeah, and I think Janet's really enjoying his company in the waiting room, actually. I think she really is. Yeah, and I want to enjoy his company, so... Get him in? Yeah, let's do it. Janet, please let go of Peter and send him right on in. Thank you.
9:37Joe Marler:Peter Wiggs, everybody! Yay! Welcome, sir. How are you? Dr. Marla? Yes. Yes, that is me. This is... have you got a title? Uh, side... kick side cuck. This is side cuck Jake. Are you happy with side cuck? Not really, but to be honest, I'm just glad for the work. Yeah. So, yeah, I'm happy to be here. What is your work? What is my work? Sitting in this little chair, observing, and feeding Joe any extra information about you. Research assistant. Research assistant. Assistant to the researcher. Yeah. And if you need anything, fact check in. So you're just like doctor's bitch? Doctor's bitch is lovely.
10:17Joe Marler:Right, well, we've established who I am. We've established who Jake is, but ultimately the goal of today is to establish who you really are and how we can really help you. Okay, yeah. There's a bit of scepticism coming from you, I can feel it. I mean, listen, I've needed help for a long time, but if I was going to look for someone to help me, I don't think it would be you and your bitch. That's a fair point. Well, why don't we try and change that opinion you have by starting off with the intake questionnaire. So, full name? Peter James Wicks. Peter? Peter, yeah. I christened Peter. So, Peter's your name?
10:58Yes. Peter's fine, is it? I mean, I've only really been called Peter when I've done something wrong. It's just Pete, it's just... What happens if someone's to continually call you Peter? Someone of your size? Nothing.
11:11Joe Marler:Someone of my size? I'll kick the fuck out of your ass. Yeah, that's about right. It's about right. Occupation. Oh, I sort of blagging a living, I think. Blagging a living. Yeah. But what about like media personality? Was that too wanky for you? Well, yeah, adding personality on the end is... Reality TV star. Let's go with media jack of all trades. Media jack of all. Interesting. So the next bit of Jack of All... He's master of... Nanya. Nanya. Cool. Star sign. Scorpio. Yeah, you are. Yeah. Do you know the characteristics of a Scorpio? Sting. Stink. Sting. Sting. I don't know characteristics. I just know we're supposed to have a sting in our towel.
12:01Yeah, as in poison. I don't think we stink. You said I smell nice.
12:04Joe Marler:Yeah, you do smell wonderful. Right, well... Almost like you're overcompensating for something. Just masking the smell. No, it says Scorpios are intense, loyal, brave and poisonous. I've got loyalty tattooed on the back of my neck. What? Wow. It's just to remind me to do it. Well, that's great because the next question is your first tattoo. First tattoo, yeah. What was it? I was 15. I was a deep child. A deep child? Yeah, I was a thinky child. Oh, right, yeah. So I had Never Enough tattooed on my inner forearm in Latin. How do you say it in Latin? Everyone says it differently. Non-quam? Non-quam satis, I think.
12:55Interesting. That's how I say it, but obviously I'm from the gutter, so I don't talk properly anyway.
12:59Joe Marler:Worst tattoo. Is that your worst? No. Or is that you've had... No, I mean, listen, I've got a fair collection. They're all quite bad. I mean, I've got a tattoo of Sam Thompson. Right, you've got his actual face on your body. Yeah. He's got mine as well, yeah. Aww. Yeah, no, it's cute. You feel really close, aren't you? Yeah, he's got mine there. I don't... Oh, publicly. Why did you do that? I just think he likes me more than I like him. Yeah, I've always sensed that, actually. Favourite person in the world? Is it someone other than Sam Thompson? Oh, fuck yeah, he doesn't even feature in the top ten.
13:34My mum. Oh, okay, that's lovely.
13:36Joe Marler:least favourite person in the world? It's a hard question. It's easy to say who you love the most because there aren't many. But when there are so many people that you dislike, it's hard to pick my least favourite. Do you know what I mean? Because I despise kind of all people. You'd like me to put majority? Yeah. Majority. What's your biggest fear? Well, there's two answers to that. Sure. One is just an irrational fear of something. And I don't know if I want to say it because I feel like not many people know it. And then now I feel like what will happen is people will use it against me. Is that I have an irrational fear of gorillas.
14:18It's fucking true, mate. Like, honestly, if they wanted to take over the world, they would. Like, Planet of the Apes is possibly the scariest thing I've ever seen. And I know it's mostly chimps, but the gorillas are always evil.
14:37Joe Marler:I think off the back of that and what I know about you already, there's something we can help you with. Your first tattoo was Never Enough. Your book was called Never Enough. To be honest, even for a fake doctor, the theme here is quite obvious. You're not quite the Rubik's Cube I thought you were going to be. Did you think I was going to be quite complicated and it's quite simple? Yeah, but you're actually to the point. Yeah. Yeah, okay. So, my mission today is simple. I want you to genuinely believe that you're enough. Okay. Oh. Are you up for that? I mean, I'm up for it, yeah. The best way I think we could do that is by getting naked.
15:19I mean, in that sense, I'm enough.
15:23Joe Marler:I meant emotionally. Oh, right. Excellent. Are you ready to feel like you're enough? Yes. Yeah, I'm ready. Jake, are you ready to...? Yeah. I mean, I don't have to subscribe to Porn Lab anymore. Just watch this. It'd be lovely. It would be great if you could put your cock away, though. It's quite distracting. I'm just honoured you could see it from this, if you're honest with me. This is great. Right, let's get into it. Where did this Never Enough originate from? What's it about, mate? What serious answer? Let me just clarify the whole session. You can make it as serious or as funny as you like.
16:01Joe Marler:If you want to sit here and me and you talk about masculinity and mental health or whatever, we can do that. If we can sit here and prat about, we can do that. If we do both, we can do that. It's whatever you want it to be, Peter. Wow. Both is good, though, isn't it?
16:21Joe Marler:Just going off the other eps. All right, yeah. Listen, so where did it come from? My mum tried to take her own life when I was 11. Fucking hell. Yeah. I found her and I always had this thing that she would have left me mum and dad divorced and I always had this thing that she'd have left me and I wasn't enough for her to want to be here fucking hell mate and I've only really realised that as I've kind of got older and wrote the book that that's probably why I've always felt like I've never been enough there's always this wanting to do more for other people because I've never been able to do enough I'm always the one amongst all my kind of friends and everything I'm probably a bit of control freak get shit done if you need something done I'll do it you know I'll do whatever you need me to do probably just because for I don't know some sort of validation but even if people give you that I won't believe it so it's now just in my head so actually I'm just not enough for myself it's probably not even that I'm not enough for other people anymore thank you mate yeah no in all seriousness when we were talking about three minutes ago you were like oh well I don't know we have to give you the serious answer I think but to then actually give an answer like that i'm like oh is it you know it's weird because i don't really know you know it's similar to kind of most men not great at talking about them sort of things but only really in the last couple of years i lost you know the most important person to me a few years ago and um and just went completely off the rails and that she was kind of always been from from a kid like my my safety blanket and when you kind of lose that you have to start reflecting on yourself and why you do the things you do and why you become the person you become.
18:00But pre that, I never would have spoken about anything like that.
18:03Joe Marler:And you explore that a lot in your podcast, don't you, Man Made? Yeah. Does that come up with a lot of the guests that you have on yours? Yeah. Like not being enough, that feeling of imposter, like why am I here, what am I doing? I've always said that I've never suffered with mental health. You know, my mum was bipolar and I never really understood that. I just thought she didn't want me, I didn't understand that that wasn't her at the time that was, you know, she was, she wasn't well and she, you know, she still suffers now and I think this is the thing with mental health is so many people now yeah, it's talked about loads, but no one really listens and I think that's the problem, we're all told to talk but no one really listens because actually the talking side of stuff is good for you to understand yourself but there isn't a cure for mental health there's no one size fits or answer to anything and it's just trying to ensure that you have more good days than bad days.
18:55Joe Marler:My view on it is that your mental health is the same as your physical health in the sense of you're never always perfect, you're never always bad. Do you know what I mean? It's about finding what things work for you to make you have more good days than bad days. And it's from various degrees. It's difficult because there's so many different things, you know, therapy, talk to your friends, do this, and there's so many different other or different avenues for people to go down if they are struggling but it's also can be quite disconcerting for people if they try these things and they still feel like and actually really fundamentally it all comes down to understanding yourself better and i'm a complete work in progress with that do you know i mean you know man-made is is certainly not about me giving this it's just about hearing someone's story and and listening it's not about me giving an answer to anyone because you know if you're going to come to for advice, it ain't me.
19:50It's about listening and just having that conversation where someone might listen to something and go, fuck, and understand themselves a little bit better.
20:00Joe Marler:This episode is sponsored by the new Brave Ancestral Protein Powder from Ancient and Brave. I mean, a big, muscly fella like you, you're going to be getting through a lot of protein. Yeah, well, I used to need lots of protein playing rugby, but I also need to keep on top of it now, you know, for everyday things like recovery, energy, or activities with the kids. And do you know why it's called Brave Ancestral Protein? I don't think I do, no. It's inspired by the way our ancestors ate, but also it's scientifically formulated for modern life. So the way you've got that raw caveman energy, but you also dress like a doctor.
20:33Joe Marler:Well, talking of doctors, listen to this. It's a high-quality beef isolate blend with nutrient-dense organ meats and collagen peptides alongside B vitamins, digestive enzymes, and carefully selected functional ingredients such as cacao and beetroot. Well, as you know, Joe, you know, I've been trying to bulk out a little bit, but I feel like all the protein powers that have, they've got that artificial sweetener taste. Well, there's no artificial flavours, fillers or additives in this. It's a naturally rich, indulgent blend, easier to digest than other proteins. And it's not all about bulking, Jake.
21:08Joe Marler:This is about everyday needs. Here's what I like about Ancient and Brave. It says here that they've got a commitment to sustainability. 23:43Joe Marler:Right, we touched on your tattoos in the intake questionnaire. You said your first tattoo was never enough. You also said that you've got loyalty on the back of your neck. I've got a lot of sayings on me. Okay, sayings. What have you got on your fingers? You've got Seoul, as in the capital of Korea? South Korea. Been a number of times. Really lovely city. Yeah. Have you been to North? I haven't. Is it on the bucket list? No. No. No. So if I invited you to come to North Korea with me? I'd say to you, listen, have a great time, send me a postcard. I'd love to see Kim Jong-un on man-made, though.
24:24That'd be good. Wouldn't it? It would be an interesting look at, yeah.
24:28Joe Marler:Honestly, I think you might be less bloody bratty. Talk about it. This is the problem, mate. All right? It wouldn't be... It wouldn't be crawling your gears. Come on. It wouldn't be the first politician you've had on, though, would it? No, it wouldn't, no. Come on. sorry Kim Jong-un not a politician let's not also I'm so sorry I don't want to be all fact check keyboard warrior over here but he's not he's not the he's not the MP for fucking like the segue from Kim Jong-un to Keir Starmer he's fucking great no I need some context on that for you and for potentially the viewers and listeners my political knowledge yeah fuck all similar to mine except I know that Putin's a twat Kim Jong Un also a twat and Hitler cunt yeah yeah yeah yeah I don't think that's a controversial opinion I don't think you're thinking outside the box no I wasn't well you're you're the politics man now aren't you you interviewed the Prime Minister what was that like I mean yeah and we did it at 10 Downing Street So yeah, it was wild.
25:41It was wild. I mean, it was about trying to effect change. And if you're going to do that, then you might as well speak to the man who's actually responsible and able to do something. You know, there's certain things that I would love to see happen in kind of schools and whatnot, which is support for younger men because they're so fucking angry. And actually, you know, that was kind of why we ended up interviewing Keir Starmer. Everyone has got something behind him, regardless of what you think of the guy. You know what I mean? I'm not there to give my opinion on what I think he is as a politician or a prime minister.
26:18It was just kind of to hear a different point of view from someone. It was interesting.
26:23Joe Marler:Has he got any tattoos?
26:27I don't know. I didn't ask him.
26:29Joe Marler:Missed a trick there. Shit. Really missed a trick there. What have you got? I've got a few. Nowhere near as much as you have, which is... What's your worst tattoo? My worst at all of them. Really? Yeah. Well, actually, I got...
26:46Joe Marler:I got four kids and I've got a J for my eldest son and I've got an M for my eldest daughter. And then I didn't get a letter for the other two because I just sort of realised I don't really want any more tattoos and it hurts. I sort of... I moved out of that phase, so to speak. It's not a case of just preferring two. Well, that's where the awkwardness comes in now. They've reached an age where they're sort of starting to realise, actually, there's an M there, there's a J there. Where's the F and the P for us then? And I don't know how to tell them that it is mainly because I prefer the other two.
27:29It's really tough, isn't it? Yeah, how do you broach that?
27:32Joe Marler:Now you're this guy that, you know, shows his emotions. You've been very open and honest. You know, you wear your heart on your sleeve. In fact, have you got a heart on your sleeve? I've got a heart on my finger. Not quite your sleeve, is it? No. That's why I said it's on my finger. Yeah, but do you think you should get it on your sleeve? There's no room for it, really. I don't think. But also, I don't think I am a heart on the sleeve guy. I'm 37 and I'm still single. You're 37? Yeah. Fuck off. You think I was older? Yeah. No. I've done it again. I've done it again. No. No, no, no, no, no. Me, me, me.
28:10Joe Marler:I'm sorry. It's a long way back from that. How old did you think he was? No, no, this. No. No. Just answer the question. How old did you think he was? Yeah. What I'm saying is, I used to watch you growing up when I was growing up. How fucking old are you? 35. What? No, you're not. You're not 35. How old do you think I was? Way older, isn't it? It's way older. I think you both thought each other were the same age. The number you've got in your head now for the other one, is it? Fucking hell. Okay, on three, I want you to... We both say the age that we thought each other were. Okay, ready? One, two, three...
28:55Joe Marler:47.
29:00Joe Marler:Oh, my God. That is mental. Shit. Wow. That low? Fuck. That low? Fucking tits. Yeah, hold on. Who the fuck are you talking about? Fuck. How old are you? 32. I should get a proper job. It's still on work experience. Why have you got so many tattoos? Why have you got so many? Right, so, the reason I got my first tattoo was to get into nightclubs what you put your ID on the tattoo no so yeah no so it was I had it there and then I had one up that arm literally I don't know about three months later because I really enjoy getting tattooed I enjoy the sensation as in the sensation love it same way I like ingrown toenails continue yeah no it's similar I um so yeah so I got these two So then when you used to queue up for liquid or some fucking shit old nightclub, you used to just sort of play with your hair and those things, and just assume that I was old.
30:06I always looked quite old anyway, evidently. You know, I had like a fucking full beard at 12. But yeah, it was to get into nightclubs. And then I just really enjoyed the feeling of it. So I had pretty much like a full sleeve and a full back piece by the time I was like 17.
30:25Joe Marler:On the subject of tattoos, I would like us to move into an exercise I call ink and think. Have you heard of Rorschach? Rorschach? He came up with a very unique technique of ink blot. Oh, okay, yes, yeah, yeah. So I'm going to show you some Rorschach ink blots. Okay. And I want you to tell me what you think, what you see, what you think they mean, and how they make you feel. Okay. I've actually had these ink blocks tattooed on my body. So you're going to show me them on your body? Well, I don't know how else I would do it. Well, I mean, so you're going to take some clothes off to show me? Because I can tell you how that's going to make me feel now for all of them.
31:14Right, let's do it.
31:15Joe Marler:Look, Pete, this isn't about being right or wrong, is it, Jake? Er, no, it's about interpretation. Interpretation. Definitely about interpretation. So... Number one. Wow. Yeah. So, um, lovely arm, very big arm from you. Um, that... What do you see? It's a, it's a... It's a cock dripping cum. Fucking hell. That you've had on your arm. a cock dripping cum it's look there's two kind of circular bits at the top what you've done is some sort of eclair shaped thing with a helmet that looks like it's dripping can you see where I'm coming from when this was tested originally when it first came out it was seen as two animals facing each other that is interesting very interesting just need to make a note of that you said angry penis exploding yeah that was inkblot number one inkbot number two so his leg is now on the desk yeah um firstly i mean the tattoo was secondary to the first thing i looked at because you are sort of showing brain currently um it's just it's a tight pair of shorts that mate isn't it sure now what do you see just say what you see say what you see barney the dinosaur barney the dinosaur big purple kind of dinosaur He looks, you know, little legs there.
32:44He's got his head, but he's got a baby Barney on his back.
32:48Joe Marler:Oh, okay. So, just give him like a... So, it's like a father, son, dinosaur combo. Sure. Sorry, I've also... Is that a roll neck with cut off sleeves? Do you know what? You've worn a jacket for the last 12 episodes. I had no idea that was what was going on underneath. It's the first time you've taken a jacket off. Have you customised a roll neck by cutting off the sleeves? Is that what's not working for you, is it? It's making you not be able to take me seriously. Oh, no, no, that's it. You're really coming to stripper territory now. With the stethoscope on as well. Sure. Someone order a doctor.
33:25So... Less magic, Mike, more tragic, Mike.
33:28Joe Marler:Sorry, carry on. So, number one. Well, we saw two animals. Pete saw a cock. No, an angry... An angry... Jizzing cock. Jizzing cock. I watched that number two. I sort of saw the British Isles. Pete saw Barney the dinosaur Carrying a baby Barney Barney baby Barney no sort of phallic element to that one you thought? No it's no it's good because it would be worrying if you just saw penises in everything yeah penile and number three yeah what do you see? that to me looks like a rocket
34:09you know like Apollo 13 sort of taking off and there's some stars in the sky sure or you've drawn a massive cock and bollocks on your stomach nice all quite phallic though you knew I was coming in what you thought would be good is just sort of draw three sort of penis shapes on your body and show them to me
34:30Joe Marler:these aren't drawn these are tattoos Are these the ones for your kids?
34:44Joe Marler:Right, before we finish up, let's talk about something extremely important. Okay. Dogs. Oh, yeah, absolutely. You're a big dog man. My favourite subject. Why do you love dogs so hard? What is it you love about them? Dogs are the only thing, Well, animals in general, but specifically dogs. I love all animals. Except gorillas. Except gorillas. Joe's got sort of quite a big, hairy gorilla stature. What? Did you find him like, whoa, God, it reminded me of a gorilla. No, because he's got a simple face. Simple face. That is such a beautiful turn of phrase. I cannot tell you how much I've enjoyed that.
35:22Joe Marler:But what a simple face you have. Interesting. Anyway, dogs. So your love of dogs, where did that come from? And what do you love about them so hard? Um, dogs are one of the only things in the world that love you more than they love themselves. Do they make you feel enough? Uh, dogs, yeah. I think it's one of the only genuine forms of unconditional love. Because dogs don't, they don't really think about, they live for the moment, there and then. I find it really interesting that you seem to be able to connect more with dogs, and want to connect more with dogs, rather than humans. is that based on well actually it's probably less likely that dog's going to turn on you or break your trust i've never been let down by a dog and i i've dealt with um uh dogs that have come from really terrible situations like who have no trust who are aggressive reactive and uh you know all sorts of stuff and actually fundamentally the thing that fixes dogs like that is love and i kind of I kind of think that it's something that could translate to people as well but we just don't sometimes accept it like a dog does Can you rank in order of who you'd most like to spend a day with so we've got your dogs Sam Thompson Joe Marler Really easy yeah Dogs Yeah Number one Second to that it would be Joe Marler Really?
36:58Yeah
36:59Joe Marler:Why have you just immediately sort of stroked your nose? And that's a, sorry to interrupt you, but that's a telltale sign of a liar. That's the first thing that you've said that actually sounds like you know what you're talking about. Well done.
37:19Joe Marler:We've come a long way in this journey to help dispel the myth that you're never enough. We've got one final exercise. like a final exam, so to speak, to give you like a tick, Jake. So from getting to know you a bit, Pete, and knowing Joe, I feel like you do have something in common, which is neither of you are very good at sincerely just admitting that you're good at stuff and just saying, I am good at this, which you're both very good at lots of stuff, rugby, podcasting. I imagine you're both very good at kissing. What? Why? What? Just get the vibe. Have you ever kissed anyone? I'm looking to this year.
37:58Joe Marler:What is your exercise? The exercise is, right, I want to use the science, and this is science-backed, of positive reinforcement to try and challenge this mantra of never being enough, alright? So what we're going to do, you're going to look each other in the eye. Okay. You're going to take it in turns to say, I am your name, and I am good at something. And we're going to go back and forth and back and forth, and I want to hear all the things that you know you're good at. Joe, off you go. I'm Joe Mahler. This is serious stuff. Sorry, yeah. I'm Joe Marler, and I'm good at getting strangers to overshare.
38:36Nice. I'm Pete Wicks, and I'm also good at getting strangers to overshare.
38:43Joe Marler:Interesting. I'm Joe Marler, and I'm good at eating, but in like a grazing way. Like a cow? Elk. More like an elk. Okay. Yeah. I'm Pete Wicks, and I am good at making sticky toffee pudding. Sorry. You just said serious, mate. I know. I'm so sorry. You make good sticky toffee pudding, do you? Yeah. It's really good. I can't tell you what that sentence has just done to me. I can see it in your eyes. I'm Joe Mahler. And I'm good at... darts. I'm Pete Wicks. And I'm good at insulting people. Oh, you think you're good at insulting people? Yeah. Fucking show me then. Show me that you're enough. I feel like you can also be enough with me because I feel like you'd be very good at insulting people.
39:50Joe Marler:Yeah. So should we go for that little fucking thing that chases the air con from my stage in the corner?
39:57Fucking bitch. The bitch in the bad suit. That's fucking... You look like a thumb. You just go up. He dances, isn't he? Have you seen him stand up as well? He's not even got like a normal body. He's basically a pepper army. He goes straight from fucking shoulder blade to back and knee. It's ridiculous.
40:18Joe Marler:Pete. Enough is enough, my friend. And you are enough. Pete, very well done.
40:32Joe Marler:I think you're fucking brilliant. I think you're amazing for coming in and having a laugh with us, but also opening up and sharing as much as you have. I'm a big fan of yours. Jake is still a big fan of yours, even though you have really, really pushed the boat out in terms of HR situations, which I'm going to have to deal with. But that's absolutely fine. I want to say a big well done to you for coming as far as you have. We give every client a badge to really remember and go forth with the learnings that they've had. What have we come up with today? Quite simply, I am enough and Terrified of Gorillas, but mainly I am enough.
41:09Joe Marler:Oh, amazing. And that's for you, Pete. You can take that with you. I love this. I've had natural proper... And you get a lollipop. Fuck yes. This is amazing. I've had the best time. Oh, fucking, let's get... Oh, right, you're taking all of it. Yeah, I'm going to say all this. No, green. I'd always go for green. Really? Because green means go and red means no. Just tastes better.
41:32Joe Marler:Janet, come pick Pete up, please. Thank you. Well done, Pete.

Pete Wicks enters Dr Joe’s office carrying a belief he’s had since childhood: that he’s never quite enough.
Together, they trace that feeling back to its roots, unpacking the early experiences that shaped Pete’s self-worth and the pressure he’s carried ever since.
The conversation widens to modern masculinity, including Pete’s interview with Prime Minister Keir Starmer and what it revealed about being a man today. A shared love of tattoos then leads to a Rorschach-style experiment involving Joe’s body and some highly questionable analysis.
