In short
A comedic “doctor’s session” where Prince Harry (the Duke of Sussex) and rugby/TV personality Joe Marler discuss coping with trauma and resilience, then explain the Invictus Games and why Birmingham is hosting the next event (next July).
Key claims
Trauma coping can be helped by “moving the body” (exercise/sport, boxing, swimming, nature) and by structure and conversation; children teach resilience and help adults not take themselves too seriously; Invictus uses sport for recovery and builds a global community of wounded, injured, and sick service personnel (26 nations).
Notable examples
Harry describes being blown up in Afghanistan (2011) and later waking in Birmingham; JJ Chalmers recounts meeting Harry near a swimming pool and pitching Invictus as “egg and spoon races.”
Guest backgrounds
Prince Harry—British Army veteran, founder of the Invictus Games. Joe Marler—England rugby player (Invictus-adjacent via Harry). JJ Chalmers—Invictus Games co-founder/founder figure and veteran.

2:03How are you feeling? Sweat. Yeah, but how are you feeling? So that's, with everything that's going on, that's how you're feeling, just sweat? No, as in, that is what I'm feeling. What do you mean by how am I feeling? What I thought you might answer is give me an answer that was sort of maybe nuanced and thought out in the context of what we've got going on, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, a once-in-a-podcast opportunity, someone who is internationally famous, someone who is going to give us tales of an experience that we could never even fathom, someone who is in the public eye and has been for all their life, and I've said, how are you feeling about meeting them?
2:38And you've gone, sweat. Sweat. That's because... How are you feeling? You've said sweat? I misunderstood your question. I fucking know you have. I misunderstood because I thought you meant, what am I feeling? In the sense of, what is my body feeling? Well, right now, my back is feeling sweat because it is pouring down me with nerves. Nerves and excitement at the prospect of meeting his surely in the top 20 most recognisable, famous human beings on the planet. Okay. I'd love to have a crack at that list. So, Obama. Yep. Trump, probably. OK. Beckham? Beckham. Beckham gets a shout in that. Ronaldo?
3:24Messi? Yeah, yeah. LeBron? No, I don't think he gets in that. OK, Michael Jordan? I don't think he gets in that list. Michael Jordan gets in the list, mate. I don't think he gets in the list. OK, let me test it. Ready? Yeah. Who thinks Michael Jordan gets in the list? Yeah. Yeah. There you go. That's three. I will say there's 38 people in it. But I'm just going to say, look, I don't love a referendum. God knows we've got them wrong in the past. But on this occasion, you have to believe the people. We really have to. Oh, Le Fleur, Le Fleur. I've never met anyone in that sort of like... I really like how you put that.
3:58The 20 most recognisable people across the world. Across the world. Oh, my God. Go on. I know another one. Go on. Bean. Mr Bean. Mr Bean. Genuinely, Mr Bean's in there. Genuinely, Mr Bean. Wow. I would put him probably in the top 10, top 5, 10. Mr Bean? No, no, no. Oh. H, as they call him. Yeah. You got your ring on as well? What do you think he's going to think? I think he's going to think, why have you put that on? Just show it to the camera so they can see that. I don't think he will be weirded out by that. I think it'll be like an appreciation, like a little nod, like, hey, big fan of yours.
4:34If someone walks up to me and they've got a stethoscope on or a tweed jacket, I go, they're a big fan. Love them. I don't go, oh, that's weird, that's creepy. I go, legend. Do people come up to you on the street with a stethoscope and a tweed jacket? No, never happened. No, no. That's intense. Alright, shall we see if Janet wants to let him in? Janet met Harry. Sorry, why did your eyebrows do that? Because Janet's meeting Harry right now. That's amazing. She's a big fan of... Do you think she knows who he is? Erm, I think she thinks he's Angry Ginge. So she's talking to him about I'm a celeb. Have we not actually told her?
5:09No. Because we've had to keep it under wraps. Keep it secret. Everyone's out there going, oh, sorry, I had to keep Taylor Swift's wedding invite under wraps. No, that's got nothing on the secret we've been keeping. And we even forgot to tell our receptionist. She thinks it's angry Jen. She's been asking him about I'm a Celeb. Oh, my God. If she's out there asking him how he got double man of the match at Soccer Aid again, we're in trouble. Oh, my God. Stop it now. Janet! No, yes, it's the Duke of Sussex. Yeah, okay, yeah, okay, you've got it now, yeah. Can you send him in, please? Thank you.
5:50The Duke of Sussex, everybody!
5:55Joseph? Oh, how are you? Good to see you. Good to see you. Good to see you. Very good to meet you. You're Jake? I am indeed. Lovely to meet you. You're the Duke, right? I'm the Duke. Got you. Sorted. Why are you so far away from the desk? Um, it's a good question. It's sort of, some people call it the cuck chair. Um, some people call it sort of, basically, I'm his research assistant, but I'm kept at arm's length. So it's not your choice that you're there? No, to be honest with you, this is closer than I've ever been. No, what are you insinuating? I'm not insinuating anything. I'm just saying it's nice.
6:26I thought this was one-on-one. Jake's now there. I'm learning a bit more about Jake, but I'm also learning that you're keeping him with our assistants. Yes. Because there's always a choice. He has incredible working conditions. He's treated wonderfully. Yes. There's water next to him. You don't have to say yes, but... There's water next to me, that's great, isn't it? I mean, there's no air conditioning, but there is water. That's good. And we're a team, aren't we? Yes, we are. He's my boss. He's very good to me. We support each other and I try and help him in his endeavours. Have you ever watched him play rugby?
6:57Not really. I've seen video compilations of him that are titled Joe Marley being a shithouse for 20 minutes. but yeah other than that not really I mean you're a rugby fan I am a rugby fan were you a Joe Marler fan no I mean I very rarely saw him on the field and if I saw him I think he used to get upset about it no no there's not a level of upset in me I've seen more more videos of him eating cake than scoring tries let's put it that way oh okay sure you subscribe to the OnlyFans then fine the OnlyFans sorry quite an aggressive start from you Duke well Well, it's not an aggressive style. God, your hands are huge.
7:35Mmm, now you are. Your tune's changed, hasn't it? Look at those. Big old mitts on me. Like individual, like, Cumberland sausages. Okay, let's go. Let's get into it. Okay. Intake questionnaire. Dr. Joe Marler. Well, you just said get into it, and then you interrupt the doctor. Okay. I'm sorry. Full name. Henry Charles Albert David, uh, Jigga Sussex. It's a long one. All right, Jake.
8:06I actually thought you giving us your full name would clear things up. No, no. It's made it worse. Made it worse. Any chance of shortening that? Harry. Harry. H. H. H. I thought you should say that. There we go. How does that make you feel? It's a bit creepy. What's that for? Given your name is Joe Marler. Is this for me? It's a sign of my admiration for you that I wear on my little finger. Okay. It's not a little finger, but I say.
8:39I haven't actually got enough room to write your name, so we'll just go with Harry or Duke. H. H, just H. That's great, great. Star sign? Virgo. Really? What's yours? I'm obviously a Cancerian. Okay. Poisonous and crab-like. Yep. Same as Jake? Yeah, poisonous, crab-like. Do you know what they call the plural of crabs? You don't want to know how you find out. We'll just stick with Virgo then. Fine, Virgo's policy. Okay, how about this one? Occupation. Full-time dad, British Army veteran, Prince of England. Duke. But for today, I don't know. What do you want? Duke. We'll go with the Duke, yeah. Yeah.
9:30Obviously, for today as well, because of where we are. Okay, yeah, sure. The inventor. Would you call yourself the inventor? The inventor of? Of the Invictus Games. Yes. Inventor. Founder. Founder. Founder, yeah. That's probably the better word. All right, okay, great. Yeah, fair enough. Jinx slash inventor, yeah. Do you know how to spell inventor?
9:53This is a different therapy session to what I'm used to. It's supposed to be made to feel comfortable. Most famous person in your contacts? Probably Dylan Holly or James Haskell.
10:12Decent. Right, you've seen them play rugby. Very good. Very good, yeah. Makes the sport worth watching, doesn't it? And good-looking guys as well. Yeah, very, very good. There'll be a heavy edit on this episode, of which I don't actually have any control. But thank you for that, H. Favourite trashy TV show? Love Island. Do you watch Love Island? I have watched Love Island. Have you? God. I don't watch Love Island. I have watched Love Island. There's a big difference there, Jake. On trashy TV, did you ever watch I Wanna Marry Harry? I Wanna Marry Harry? Are you aware of I Wanna Marry Harry? Yeah, well, originally they asked me and I wasn't available.
10:51Do you know about this? Whoa, whoa, whoa, what's happened with you two here? What, I want to marry Harry? There's a crazy, trashy TV phenomenon, I want to marry Harry. In 2014, they got like 14 American reality stars. They all wanted to date Prince Harry, obsessed with this guy, basically. And they went through rounds. Every episode, they got rid of one of the women. And then the final woman was like, I win a date with you. And then they reveal it to some bloke from Stoke, ginger guy from Stoke. That's it. But they thought it was Harry the whole time. I think they call it a look-alike. A look-alike, yes, sorry.
11:23Mm-hmm. But yeah, yeah. Crazy. What? Yeah. That's not the worst that's out there. That's just one example. I would go as one of the weirdest shows I've heard of. Yeah. Yeah, I think so. Yeah. And I used to love watching Naked Attraction. You still do, don't you? Yeah, I do. Yeah, you're right, actually. What do people most often get wrong about you? That I'm not ginger. Hang on, hang on, hang on. People get that wrong? Yeah, yeah. People think I'm ginger, but I'm more sort of like, um, sunset, like, auburn. Yeah? I don't know why that's funny. Can we not laugh at the Duke, please? Yeah. Unless you want to call me Ginge, you know?
12:08I got bullied a lot at school. It's called Carrot Top, weren't I?
12:15Sorry. I don't know why they would do that. It's not funny. It's not funny. I'm going to need therapy after this, I think. If you could swap lives with one other famous Harry, just for one day, who would you choose out of Harry Styles, Harry Kane or Harry Potter?
12:39Kane on a winning day. Oh, no, no, no. What? I can't choose that. On a winning day? On a winning day, yeah. You don't want to be Kane on a losing day, do you? You don't want to be Kane and Aldi on a random Sunday. That would be horrible. Given the current circumstances, with the pressure that's on him, I'd like to be Kane winning. On a winning day. So Potter doesn't take your fancy in the slightest? No, I'd love to, I mean... Who wouldn't want to ride a broomstick? But Harry Styles, great, you know, running around on stage in a pair of tight shorts. So it's a tough, it's a hard choice, but Kane for me with a squeaky voice.
13:27Hello! I'm so happy to be here. I thought it was great. Yeah. It was absolutely, it was brilliant. Is it coming? Is it coming home? Is it? I think it's coming home. Yeah, it's coming home. It's not going to be easy but it never is. Oh, my God. It does look good though. It does look good. What's your grooming routine with your auburn? What are we talking? Upstairs and downstairs. And middle stairs. Yeah, and middle stairs, to be fair. It's a shit shower shave, obviously. Shit shower and a shave? Yes, shit shower and a shave. All at the same time? No. You can't shit in the shower. A friend of mine actually did shit in a shower and refused to get rid of it.
14:08I dealt with it. Do I know this person? We should move on back to you answering. How did you get rid of it? We should definitely move on. I like your beard. It's trimmed nicely. You know, I trim my beard every sort of five, six days Just to keep it a little bit tidy. Nothing really happening on top. I get a haircut. Otherwise, I try not to look at what's happening. No. And then, I don't think, Jake, we don't need to go there. We don't need to go there. No? No, right. Yeah. But we can. We don't need to. Fair enough. Did you want to go there, Joe? Well, if I'm to share, so it's a comfortable space, I look like the last turkey in the shop.
14:43What's going on? That's where I'm at, just so you know. Trying to make as much improvements as I can. From you? front and back? No, the back's a disgrace. It's like the eye of that thing from Lord of the Rings. The eye of Sauron? Yeah, that's what it's like. It's awful. Just don't go, no one goes there anywhere. You don't need to prove it.
15:06I can believe it. Fuck. I don't know what's happened. I don't know what's happened here. I just want to pick up on the fact that you complimented my beard and I didn't really accept it as a compliment. It's good. And I want to say thank you. It's always been good. It's actually a stark contrast to the last time you mentioned my beard. When was that? When I first met you. Where was this? It was at Twickenham. Okay. On a captain's run. And I didn't know how to behave around you. I think you were having a chinwag with the name that we shan't name. Begins with H. Yeah. Turns out to be your favourite player.
15:41You were having a chat with him and I sort of ran past and thinking. You were like, oh, look at the state of you with that beard. Oh, sorry, that's not very nice. No, it was said in a jokey way and it hasn't haunted me for the entire time of my life. No, I grow a beard because I admire you so much. So, you know, we're good. Clip the fuck out of that now. Let me have that for the rest of my life. Can Jake grow a beard or not? It's there. It's there. He's a Tashman. I'm a Tashman. I'm a Tashman. It's not a Tashman, a Tashman. Why do you go Tashman? I'll be honest with you, it slipped out and I've tried to double down on it.
16:15It works. I'm a Tashman. I sort of go with the tash and then have a suggestion of Beard to support it there. Yeah. All right, I think that's enough, silly buggers. Great. Do you consent to be... Wait, have we started? No, this is just the opening. Well, this is trying to work out how we can help. Okay, all right. Do you consent to being analysed by someone who's not a real doctor? In this context, yes. You can analyse whatever you want. Right. Let's go.
16:44Right. Duke. Harry H. Joseph. Yeah, thank you. Dr Joe, sorry. Dr Joe. You've grown up in a world that has been both incredibly public and really unusual. You've had to face stuff arguably no one else has had to face in their life. And then you've had to try and navigate your way through it all publicly, not just alone like we are privately. Later, we're going to be joined by your friend from the Invictus Games, JJ Chalmers. What I want to find out from both of you is how you deal with trauma and find a way to move forward from it. We try and pride ourselves on the ability to go from light to dark.
17:38For me, it's just one big conversation. It's not pretty dark so far, but... Okay, let's try some light.
17:48Happy to have a little delve around and go for it? Yeah, great. What do you want to know? Okay, great. Methods for dealing and coping with trauma. Now, my go-to, all jokes aside, have developed into blasting out Adele. I get lost in Adele songs. I'm not having you down as an Adele person. Are you kidding me? I love Adele, but... Oh, my God. Oh, wow, okay. I cannot get enough of her. Okay. Fantastic. But I also find comfort and structure in gym. Lifting tin. The iron never lies. I told you this before, haven't I? I said I don't go to the gym. Really? Yeah. Really good. Really good. So they're my go-to that I stay on top of to help me like...
18:38Going to the gym is an absolute... Any form of exercise is great, especially like when you're depressed when you're dealing with stuff um stressed like you've got to move that shit around the body yeah um so but then again you come from a sporting world so i think you've grown up being able to rely on and lean on um getting a sweat on right well yeah even even wearing tweed seems to do that for me definitely keep it on for now What about you? What are your go-to methods? Sport, exercise, nature, swim, anything that I can do, again, just to move the body. The mind is a different thing, right? I think, again, if you're feeling it here, there are ways to be able to move that around and be able to feel better.
19:31But a lot of people really struggle with the mental aspect and being able to get yourself out of a loop or a cycle. And again, having a challenge or a focus is something that can really help. I was amazed when I went to the North Pole and the South Pole in different times, obviously. Thank you for clearing it up. I was struggling there. Thanks for Jake's benefit more than anything else. But what I was amazed was when you're like when you're sort of polling and walking and you've got music in you you can think about all sorts of different things but the reality is that you're kind of like clearing the hard drive and it's the most amazing thing now i was lucky and we were lucky as a group to be able to go to the north and south pole but ultimately i come back to the same point which is exercise sport and being able to find the time to take yourself somewhere do something uh repetition is great have a routine um boxing another thing that i really enjoyed um just to sort of let any aggression out get a sweater but to me it's always it's always about getting a sweater that's the thing would you like to put my tweed jacket on to no i'm already hot just looking at you it's not putting someone else's sweat on that's that's a different thing that's what they always do yeah it's that's it's like a team bonding thing where they would like you know sweat it on with each other we'd We'd sweat it on with each other.
20:55Yeah. I've been in the changing room. I know what happens. What happens? So that's the exclusive. There we go. I've been in the changing room. I know exactly what happened. What do you mean? I don't sweat on other people. I don't offer up my sweat. I don't go, oh, do you want a jar of my sweat? Firstly, you're a forward, right? So you spend your life sweating on other people and having other people sweat on you, right? So that becomes normalized to you. so yeah but I was just about to offer you if you feel like sweating on me it's a safe space and you're more than one there we go you've literally just proved my point you want people to sweat on you I'm not going to sweat on you it's not that I want your sweat it's more you're used to it I want you to feel safe enough to sweat on me there's a difference no I feel like you're hitting on me it's weird that's a weird way to hit on someone yes but you are a weird guy so okay brilliant for me because I'm always I've been quite open about my mental struggles and how I keep on top of it and I'm always trying to learn and evolve so to speak with it all big factors for me that have helped me recently are my kids and their ability to be resilient which I just for too long just assumed I'm the parent here I need to cover you in cotton wool wrap it up I'm your protector, not a little thing.
22:20And he goes, that's the opposite to what I should be doing. How old are we? I'm not helping them. 12, 10, 7 and 5. You have four kids? Four. Wow. They belong to me. Okay. As far as I know. Okay. With my wife. Okay. It was the two withs and the pause that you went with, with. And then I was interested. I wish I hadn't answered because I was interested to see where you went next. Double with was so interesting. With a human? Is that what you were going? No, that's rude. I just wanted to make sure that it was... Well, not that make sure, I was just checking to see if it was with the same partner.
23:03Hmm, interesting. Four kids is a lot. That's a handful. He's only 36 as well. Wow. Wow, that is a big wow, Harry. I mean, that's... I'm surprised. yeah you how old did you think he was no you're fucking you're we're gonna talk after this but great great great great so you're 36 you've got four kids yeah um and you you lean on your kids because ultimately by having four kids two kids like well i learned from them in the sense that they're way more resilient like they've learned they've taught me to be more resilient in the sense of their ability to fall down, hurt themselves, and then move on. It's like a next job mentality that they've got.
23:52Yes, I think you're absolutely right. And also, kids remind you not to take yourself too seriously as well. Sure. But I think, yes, the resilience of kids is amazing and the way that they view life is so incredibly refreshing. And if a day is hard, one thing I will do is always squeeze my kids that extra, extra tight. Do you ever have that moment where you love your kids so hard? In that moment, you're like, I love you so much, I want to pop your head off. Do you know what I mean? Like that feeling, oh, I just want to... But in the nicest way. I've overshared. Cool, moving on. It's a safe space, a safe space.
24:28I get it. I'm not going to agree to it. Yes, I want... No, yes to the hugging, like, oh, I want to hug you so much. Not to the point where the head pops off, though. No, I'm not going to pop the heads off. that reaction you gave me about my age yeah okay so you assumed i was older uh yeah what closer to your age yeah and your age being 41 yeah 41 yeah really yes joe you look great no you look great do i yeah i thought you'd look younger you look that's kind he's like 39 isn't he you're more 39 actually not but thanks no but i like your moisturizer thank you very much we'll talk after So there's a little bit of similarities there.

25:13I'd also think that we are of the same similar age bracket, so we should have the same cultural references too, you know? I lived on an estate. Yeah, I did it all. So did you. You know, so... See where this is going. This, I think we should test it. Jake, you've got something we can do? I have been hard at work researching some of Joe's favourite phrases to see if you guys have the same cultural references. It's very simple, Harry. I'm going to say the start of the phrase, and I want to see if you can end it. Okay, Harry, you ready? Yeah, just go. Okay, here we go. Auto glass repair. Auto glass replace.
25:51Nailed it. But that's on TV. I had a TV, you had a TV, right? You had a TV? Right, so it was a commercial. Yes, sure. We don't have different commercials, just so we're clear. Like, different estates don't have different commercials. Anyway, sorry. No likey. Err, Paddy McGuinness. Err, no lighty. He's absolutely nailed it. See it, say it. He's not getting this wrong. Err, er, sort it, fix it. Sort it? Yes, sort it. Yes. We're three for three. Isn't that, that's the train. Yes. That's the train, yeah. Although, is it see it, say it, sort it? Or see it, say it, sorted? Sorted. Sorted. Is it sorted though?
26:31Sort... No, yes. See it, say it, sorted. Oh, you mean is the situation sorted? Yeah, you see it, you say it, and then someone needs to sort it. That's a good point, actually. Hang on a minute. Or they're saying, don't worry, it's sorted. No, I'm literally asking you to come and sort it. You think it should be more of a command? No, no. See it, say it, sort it. Oh, he has to get more emphasis on it. SORT IT! I wouldn't say it's sorted until it's actually sorted. It's not sorted, it's still there. It should be see it, say it, we'll sort it, and then, right, that's sorted. That is sorted now. Done.
27:01Good. Washing machines live longer with... Oh, that's such a classic. Washing machines live longer with... Calgon. Yes! Surely not. It's four from four. Five out of five. He can't do it. Your favourite song of all time. He can't do it. It's very simple. Who let the dogs out? Who, who, who? It's five out of five for the Duke. Come on. Really, really good. I did not see that coming. Is that it? There's only five? Well, we had a couple more. We got loads more, but we also... Oh, come on. There's just... No, come on. Come on, come on. It's his choice, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah, come on. We've got a classic as well.
27:38To me? To you? Yes, Chuckle Brothers. Chuckle Vision. Beautiful. Chuckle, Chuckle Vision. Chuckle Vision. Chuckle, Chuckle Vision. Chuckle Vision. Down, down, down. We've got... He's a big Chuckle Vision fan. He's never... Sorry, did I go in deep with the guitar set? We lost Jake there. The beat on the Chuckle Vision. We lost Jake there for a moment. What do you give this one? Okay. Final one. Thanks for watching. Joe Marlow will see you now. Don't forget to... laugh on the way out. Like, share, and subscribe. If you could do it without a camera, that'd be great. It'd be lovely. Because we'll be using that for about 25 years.

JJ Chalmers, everybody! Hey, hey! Hello, thank you, thank you. Thank you. Thank you. What a pleasure, yes. Look at that. Oh, thank you. What a wonderful-looking human you are. Why, thank you very much. Immediately drawn to your hair. Yeah, it's a thing. The complete contrast to your friend. there this is luscious locks i'm so glad you're here it's been weird by the way is this is this like couples therapy is that what we're doing here no you've made it even more weird jj great to have you here first off are you two like actual mates aren't you your pals yeah we are yeah every now and then how did that happen Invictus yeah Invictus Games I met you next to a swimming pool like about eight months before the Invictus Games was a thing and he sort of pitched the idea of what this was going to be and he was wearing a pair of budgie smugglers at the time yeah something like that speedos I was like yeah this guy we want him on our team drawn to him I see yeah good and you know long story short Invictus Games has obviously grown and got well out of hand and then yeah he's just never been able to get rid of me as a result.
31:18He was the one who said, and you've said it a lot publicly, they thought it was going to be like an egg and spoon race. Like a sports day. Well, that was kind of the pitch. It was like, do you guys all want to do a bit of sport and get together and stuff like that. The pitch was, would you like to come and do egg and spoon races? No. Maybe some sack racing? No, I said like, we're going to do the Invictus Games. Oh, good. He's going, well, it's probably going to be like an egg and spoon race. Yeah, we thought we'd go to like, you know, Colchester Barracks and we'd do... These are proper mates. Like the bickering.
31:48Leaning into each other. Yeah, totally. No, no, you said that. No, no, you said that. But, yeah, it wasn't that. In fairness, he managed to pull off, you know, the Olympic Park and, you know, TV and all that sort of stuff. I can't get out of my head that you pitched at this as a couples therapy thing. I'm making you so proud. Sometimes I don't feel like I'm heard. That's all I'm saying. Okay, okay. I think we can divert slightly. I think we can manage a couple of little couples. Let's do some couples. Okay, okay. Because JJ, do you know what? I'll be honest with you, there's a lot of things that I don't think we can get away with asking this guy over here.
32:24Okay. But there are quite a lot of things we can get away with asking you about him. Oh, I see what you've done there. What's the way he put it on me? Yeah, exactly. It was your suggestion of a couples therapy. Yeah. So very quick fire. Oh God, what have we done? What's the thing he does that gets most on your tits? So he leaves the toilet seat up and he never puts the lid back in the tube. Good. Great, good. What is annoying about him? By the way, it doesn't have to be anything. I can just say nothing. Next one. Can you tell us something he's done when he's been really fucking pissed? Er... Is he drunk?
32:55Yeah, oh yeah, not angry. Oh, he's never angry. He's never angry. Never angry, never angry. He never takes his anger out, no, no. But what's H not on a big night out? Er... Have we had... We're never out of big, big sessions. You're always on your best behaviour. A lot of the time when we're out, it's like an Invictus Gala. Yeah. Or it's like some sort of thing. Lots of eyes. And we're in the corner, the lads, because, you know, you get a bunch of veterans together. And he's, well, he's, you're sometimes like a parent, really. You have to sort of look at, like. Well, I just, yeah, I don't want to be, I kind of like want the guys to have their own fun.
33:26And with me comes extra prying eyes. So it's. And that, for the record, that's not on you personally. That's the annoying bit. Yeah. Is that, like. We can still find time outside. Oh, we always do. But like when we are out and about, and I always feel for you, because like, because to be fair, you're lovely and you give everybody time, but you are pulled away and you are like, oh, what a shame. What a shame. Does the key question, does he ever get around him? Right. Yeah, of course he gets around him. No, no. He's got a better money. He's done him. I didn't expect to be. He's got a better money.
33:56He's done him. JJ, look me in the eyes. Okay, yeah. Both of them. Okay. When was the last time he shat himself? I'd imagine sometime when you were in the army. What? Why, because you did? So you never go to the jungle? What? Is that what you call it? So you guys are just out of the jungle? You only asked that question because you must have shot yourself multiple times yourself. So there's a lot more about you than it does us. Yeah. Yeah. You know about the one that's stuck on the M25. Yeah. I would say we're quite a pooey pair. I had to double check. I was like, oh no, is that a thingy? And then it was, and then I had to carry on driving, but I didn't have any words.
34:44So, but this was through a fart? Yeah, but it was more than... Anyway... And the age of 36, or younger, that's interesting. Because normally once you're 40 or older, never trust a fart. But you're young, and you, on the M25, shout your plans via a fart. That's hilarious. And you should have that checked. Well...
35:08Right, well I think that is enough couples delving because it somehow got... It's enough, you talking about shitting yourself. I didn't! Do you think we've really made the most of this opportunity? Okay, fine. Right, you're both here. Can you explain for those who don't know what the Invictus games are? You do this one. No, you go first. What? You go first. No, because you're the one who's lived it. Erm, right. To be fair, the pitch that I was given by him 12 years ago So sports recovery for wounded, injured, and sick service personnel. So this was going to heal us physically, mentally, socially, like the power of sport to change the circumstances that we were in.
35:49You know, this was 2014. I was blown up in Afghanistan, 2011. So a big part of my recovery. But the real part of it and the bit that stuck with me was it's a platform and almost like a brand, a thing you can wrap around this amazing community that we have that became a movement. So that when we talk about the Invictus Games, yeah, it's sport and yeah, it's recovery, but actually what it is, is a cohort of men and women who have served in the armed forces who have, for one reason or another, been dealt a crap set of cards basically in life, but chose to play a joker, like chose to find a way through and became an example to people out with our community.
36:28Is that what you went? Yeah, ultimately it was about sport, using sport as part of recovery and rehabilitation. That was as simple as it was. And what it's grown into is something that I don't think any of us could ever have imagined. And it's gone far wider than just the military community. It really means something to people. The way you both talk about it, especially you, Jake, your eyes light up. Well, listen, it totally changed my life. How much it's given you, yeah. Yeah, like, you think about, like, moments, like the butterfly effect, your life would have gone in one direction. obviously getting blown up in Afghanistan, pretty significant.
37:05That change, plan A went out the window. Do you know what I mean? And literally in a blink of an eye, I went from lying on the floor dying in Afghanistan to I opened my eyes a second later and I was in Birmingham. It was a week later. And there the next chapter of my life of recovery, five years in recovery, a life with a disability begins, but it wasn't expected. Blink of an eye. You'd think that's like the most significant moment in my life. And of course it was, but actually bumping into this guy next to a swimming pool, four years later or whatever it was and going, right, I'm bringing the Invictus games.
37:39We're going to create this thing. That moment changed my life just as much as getting blown up did in a much more positive direction, obviously, because getting blown up, not good. Invictus, good. By the way, you actually do need to explain it like that to him. You just came down to the right level. I didn't want to sort of, you just, you nailed it. They're very supportive of each other. Yes. How hard you just laughed at that. I shouldn't have clapped as well. That was crazy. I think it's the distance, though. I think it's the distance. Why are you so far apart? I'll tell you what I have learned today.
38:12You can fit two people on one side of the desk. So that's nice. Just. They're smaller. They're smaller people. You mentioned you're in Afghanistan, first of all. Then you wake up in Birmingham. Yeah. The games are back in the UK next July. Yeah. Birmingham, how nice is it to actually come full circle and have that where everyone's recovery tends to start? Is it starting? Yeah, yeah. So for those that were wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan in particular, like we all got flown into Birmingham Airport and you woke up in either Sally Oak, the military hospital, or the Queen Elizabeth Birmingham. And like, yeah, that begins your recovery.
38:53And like Birmingham... Just imagine that though. like the literally like the last the last memory you had was in the sand and the the chinook coming down not everybody was kazavak from the but certainly for when you're coming back to birmingham you were and then you're you're either dying you're either blacked out or you're put into an induced coma and the next minute you wake up is with your family leaning over you and you're in a hospital bed back in the uk yeah yeah and so like this the what this city means to our to the armed forces, but to the wounded, injured, and sitting, especially the wounded of our generation.
39:31It's unquantifiable. So it's nice. I've always loved this place. I'll always know that I owe it my life. So to come back and have a different experience of it is like, that's amazing. It's going to be special. There's a lot of reconnections happening as well with the clinicians that saved these guys' lives, put them back together again, like Josh, who's part of our Invictus Games Foundation, he was over there earlier and he hadn't been back for 13, 15, 15 years. Back to hospital. He was a triple amputee and reconnected with his clinician who's still working there. Amazing. So it means a lot. There's a lot of heart and emotion to the reason why Birmingham is hosting the next game.
40:16Genuinely, from our point of view, there's probably not another city in the world that has that level of connection to this particular moment in history as well. Like that conflict, which ultimately started the Invictus Games. You know, obviously it's sadly engulfed so many more conflicts in parts of the world and more countries than ever. But it was born out of, because when you talk about like Invictus Spirit, this thing we've created, where that was actually born wasn't in London in 2014. Like it was called that in London in 2014. It was born in Ward 412 in Birmingham Hospital. But that's where the unconquered surviving thing began.
40:52A society needs more role models, people like this. That's what the Invictus has proven. We've just created the platform. And they say, thanks to me, they say thanks to the team. It's like, we just help facilitate your recovery so that you can show the world who you really are. It's incredible what you've done as the founder slash inventor. Like you referred to him. He had trouble solving. That's what your business coach is. Be nice. I'm giving compliments. I'm trying here. Sorry. But equally, you as a role model to the rest of the guys and girls that end up in similar, if not the same situations as you, is so important moving forward for them to go, actually, there's a community for me to still be a part of, like-minded people, to experience this.
41:38It's going to be so special. So moments like that were hugely important to me. When you met a person who was a few years down in recovery and you were like, oh, I'm going to be okay because I could be like him soon. but equally it's not even just for our community this isn't just about the armed forces isn't just about having disabilities anyone can learn from like our mates basically like anyone who's going through something in life and we all do can look in and go right i can live i can learn through their lived experience and like some of us yeah we kind of learn the hard way but from from my experience and what i see in all these guys resilience is in every single one of us and there is a moment in life where either you're blown up yeah or you lose someone close to you where you have where you you end up digging deep um and how you choose to use what's happened to you that's how that's how much resilience you end up getting is what i is what i see in this in in this community and they represent the armed forces globally, 26 nations.
42:42They represent the armed forces like no one else could. And what that means from a resilience standpoint, national resilience to communities of kids, of adults, of schools, of businesses, like this is what it's all about. Got to remember, this is basically like the coolest club you'd never want to be a member of. If I had my time again, I'd rather not have got blown up. He's never been. What a result. he's never been asked to be in a club excellent what a lovely way to wrap it up thank you all jokes aside this has been fucking wild yeah the whole thing for me and Jake the team absolutely wild people say this when they meet me all the time yeah equally you two are fucking legends like what you've put on what you continue to put on the role models that you continue to play in a lot of people's lives is incredible We feel very lucky that you allowed us to shout the Invictus word and spread it as far as our followers.
43:44Both of our followers will love this. Yeah, both of us. And so thank you for giving up your time and sharing your stories. And as is tradition, with all patients slash clients slash guests legally, we give them a badge, don't we? We give every guest a badge. Give every guest a badge. Who wants their badge first? Oh, okay, back to the couples issue. Okay, all right, okay. So we've gone with, I get knocked down, and then eight yours is going to be, but I get up again. And you're going to have... Like little friendship badges, actually. Friendship badges. That would be the correct hoarder to do it in as well.
44:21But I get back up again, I get knocked down. Yeah, so yes, me first, yes. You get a lolly each. Wonderful, great. Only one's laced in ketamine. You've got to decide which one. Prince Harry enters Joe’s office and quickly realises what he’s let himself in for...
After tackling the usual intake questionnaire (which reveals a few things about Harry that no one was expecting), the conversation moves into deeper territory - exploring resilience, mental strength, and how Harry finds ways to move forward from difficult experiences. He shares the coping mechanisms that help him through challenging moments, and the important role his children play in keeping him grounded.
But this wouldn’t be Joe Marler’s office without a bit of chaos. Jake puts Harry and Joe’s cultural knowledge to the test in a game that leaves them in hysterics… and somehow ends with a throwback singalong.
The conversation continues with veteran and close friend of Harry’s, JJ Chalmers, joining the session to discuss the Invictus Games coming to Birmingham in 2027, how the Games helped him rebuild his life after service, and why creating that community for veterans matters so much.
