In short

Joe Marler “MOTs” Sir Stephen Fry, aiming to reconnect him with his “naughty side.” They discuss Fry’s skepticism, pet peeves about euphemisms for death, his bipolar disorder, substance use history, and how he turned things around after prison/probation. The “naughtiness” challenge becomes a prank: Fry is encouraged to impersonate Joe in a WhatsApp group, which backfires when messages arrive from others.

Guests (backgrounds)

Sir Stephen John Fry, English actor, writer, comedian, mythologist/theologian, documentary maker, and broadcaster; known for mental health advocacy and for roles like Blackadder. Joe Marler (host), comedian/doctor persona; Jake (research assistant).

Key claims

Fry was expelled as a teen after days of cinema-going; later stole credit cards, pled guilty, and served time. After release he got probation, passed exams, won a Cambridge scholarship, and his career took off (including meeting Hugh Laurie and Emma Thompson). He says drugs/alcohol worsened mood and he sought help after a crisis.

Notable examples

Sherlock Holmes Society; films he watched (Clockwork Orange, etc.); prison work polishing corridors; “ikigai” discussion; the Traitors WhatsApp group (Alan Carr, Claudia Winkleman, Celia).

But I hope you're more faithful to your darling wife. Oh, is he a shagger? Oh, of course. What is it? You're both on that traitors WhatsApp group, aren't you? Fuck off. What if Stephen tries to pretend to be you and sees if he can get away with it?

2:30That could be quite fun. No. Yes, come on, give it to me. Sorry, that wasn't on my bingo card. Send. So, Joe, just to recap, who's on that group? There's Alan Carr and Claudia Winkleman and Celia and everyone. All the traitors. No, Celia's on there. Well, I think she'll approve. She'll say, go for it, Joe. Oh, you're a twat.

2:58Hello, welcome to my office. This is Joe Marler Will See You Now with me, Dr. Joe Marler. This is the show where celebrities stop by, I give their brains a quick MOT, and I see if I can help them get back on the motorway of life. With me, as always, is my trusty research assistant, Jake. Hello, Jake. Joe, how are you? We don't do highs no more. Do we not? How are you is a substitute for saying hi, isn't it? How are you? No, hello is a substitute for hi. I suppose it is, yeah, yeah, yeah. Salud is... But Joe, how are you? How am I? Do you know what, it's the last time I fucking ask how you are, okay?

3:35I don't know, I try to be sort of like warmer and it just gets batted back in my face. Sorry, that was your attempt at warm? That was warm. You went like this. How are you? What's warm about how are you? What's this? Is that why you're doing this? It's a desperate attempt to try and sort of like cling back some sort of respectability from being sat in this chair. That will honestly never happen.

4:00We've got an incredible guest. Who have we got, Jake? Who have we got? We normally like to say like, oh, this guest is someone who is a musician. Who does this? Who does this? It could go on and on. Let's name things that this person is an expert in or has done. Okay. So this person has been an actor. Writer Comedian Mythologist Yes, theologian What? Theologian Theologian Sort of like Theologian Yeah, sort of about, you know, has theories on religion and ideas on theology, I suppose, yeah Yeah, you're right Yeah Reality TV star Documentary maker National treasure Audiobook reader Wait, hang on We're finishing an audiobook reader It's not ideal, is it?

4:48I say national treasure I know you go audiobook reader it's like I've got no understanding of any narrative structure at all I'm really sorry about that I wonder where you've got that from

5:00this is the incredible the incomparable the amazing Sir Stephen Fry you you you ran out of it I ran out yeah I went amazing as the last one there's no room in the end Sir Stephen Fry is on this podcast I'm How have you done that? Because, I mean, when you first met... Yeah, I don't know. What happened? Yeah, he didn't know who I was. I'm the traitors. I'm really worried that he still doesn't know who I am. What did he do? We get in the car, get in the landy, and Celia's on my left. And we're not allowed to speak until we start rolling. And then we start speaking, Hello, yeah, I'm Jo. And she's like, Hello, darling, I'm Celia.

5:46lovely to meet you and then Stephen gets in and I'm like oh my god Stephen Fry gets in and he gets in the front and I'm in the back my heart's racing you can definitely hear it through my mic I'm like Stephen Fry gets in turns around and I went hiya I'm Joey Wilkinson absolutely love your work and I just go oh and we just carry on and it was like oh he thinks I'm Joe Wilkinson which actually it's not a bad thing worse people for him to think you are yeah and then when I told Joe that at the castle he went brilliant Stephen Fry knows my work and I went he also thinks you're like a 22 stone retired rugby player mate he went don't care I'll take it so who did he think Joe Wilkinson was?

6:43that's a good point who's that guy

6:48maybe if I get a chance to bring it up with him I'll bring it up yeah I wouldn't lead with it I wonder what sort of chat he's having with Janet I think that Janet has finally met her match I think rather than her chewing off the ear of our guest in the waiting room he's the one that's going to be talking to her and she's going to be thinking oh he's reverse pothole in her yeah yeah absolutely yeah good Shall we get him in? I think we have to, don't we? We can't keep a knight of the realm waiting. No way, let's do it. We're ready. Hello, Janet. Please send Sir Stephen Fry in. Yes, thank you.

7:32Stephen Fry in, Ryan! Well, my dear darling, how are you? Oh, your shorts. I was hoping you would be wearing shorts. Janet says you're having one of your slight temperamental tantrum-y days Janet said that yeah that is not are you about to prove it right this is why I sit over here Stephen is because he's a very very temperamental boss is that the start we're having you compliment me on my shorts and then go oh he's got a bit of a temper no I just I'm being careful because No, I know you're going to dig deep, and I'm being defensive already, I suppose. That's probably the truth of the matter. Oh, okay.

8:14Well, it's great to see you. Thank you very much for coming. How are you? Pretty fit, pretty limber. Limber. I was in the gym this morning. Oh, what were you doing in the gym? Lateral raises, Romanian deadlifts. Really? Yeah. You went with a superset of dumbbell lateral raises. Yeah, I'm on 25 on the deadlifts, 25 kgs, which is my highest weight actually so far, which is pretty good. I love you to pieces, I really do. Remarkably fond of you in loads and loads of ways. But the strength I'm struggling with right now in to not mock your RDL weight. It's pathetic, I know, but it's good for me. 25 kilos.

8:56Yeah. You're an adult male. Yeah. We do practice a lot of toxic masculinity on this podcast, Stephen. We always begin with an intake questionnaire. Yeah. Are you ready for this? I am. Sure. Okay, full name. Stephen John Fry. Isn't that dull? Were you at all related to the fries of the chocolate world? Not closely enough. There was a Jeremy Fry, with whom he shared a lot of lineage in the family tree, and he inherited all the money and got the big money when fries were sold to Cadbury's. And I knew him well. He was a good soul. but our branch did not benefit from that but that's okay. No bitterness, no.

9:37No bitterness, no. Star sign. Skepsis.

9:45I've been a skeptic from as soon as someone told me the nonsense about horoscopes. I said, oh, I'm a skeptic. I was born under skepticism. Well, in fact, there are 13 sun signs now not 12 despite what people think because since the day of Ptolemy well it varies it moves but since the days of ptolemy and the the uh sort of idea of the zodiac and sun signs the things have shifted in our sky but if you want to know and i shouldn't be silly about it i can tell you that i'm supposedly a virgo my birthday's on the 24th of august so slightly cuspoid with leo for someone who doesn't believe in it you know an awful lot about it?

10:30I know a lot about the liturgy of the Church of England and about the theology of Christianity which interests me enormously but I don't believe in it. I also know a lot about Greek myths but I don't believe Zeus really lives on Mount Olympus. We'll come back to that. Occupation. I can tell you what my preoccupations are but writer, actor that sort of thing. Which one do you want? Writer action figure. Reuter, actor. I'd love to see the Stephen Fry action figure. I'd love to see an action figure. Action figure, okay. Actor, writer, sort of just figure, a person who appears. Which Greek god do you relate to the most?

11:11Hermes. It's the god of thieves and liars and rascals and... That's not great for a delivery company, is it? Well, I mean, if you've ever had anything delivered by Hermes, they sort of just chuck stuff over the fence and leave it in the wheelie bin. They are sort of rascals, to be honest. Well, if you say it in a French accent, It's also a maker of silk squares and Birkin bags, Hermes. Hermes. Hermes. Hermes. I thought you were going to say herpes, and I don't know why. It's amazing how many diseases do sound like Greek gods or Greek figures. You know, Agamemnon's wife. Was she called chlamydia?

11:42No, she wasn't. She was called Clytemnestra. Clytemnestra. Clytemnestra sounds like some sort of unfortunate sort of thrush. Doesn't it? They are talking about super gonorrhea at the moment. It doesn't sound like a Greek god. Gonorrhea definitely sounds like a Greek god. What Greek god would Joe be? Oh. What was that face? No. You're one of the manly gods, so they are Hades and Poseidon. Wasn't Hades the god? Hades was the god of the underworld. Hades and Poseidon were brothers of Zeus. There were three males who were originally born of their father. Poseidon was the sea one, though, wasn't he?

12:23He was the sea one. Can't swim. In some myths, Poseidon and Hades had a sort of toss-up to see which was going to get which realm. Poseidon got the sea and horses and earthquakes and Hades got the underworld. Unbelievable. Yeah. Didn't actually find out what Greek gods you thought I would be, though. Oh, yes. I'm sorry. I was going to say Ares because he's the god of war, but he's the god of war and violence. He's a pretty unpleasant god. That doesn't suit you at all. No. Not Dionysus. He's the god of wine and frenzy and impulse and wildness. No. Too controlled for that. No. No, anything but it's a good thing.

13:01Thank you. Yeah. I'm going to have to say Zeus. You've got the beard, you've got the majesty. He's the sky god, the god of thunder and lightning. He's got the temper. The thunderbolts, yeah. But I hope you're more faithful to your darling wife. Oh, was he a shagger? Oh, of course. Was he? Yeah, he would turn himself into animals. All kinds of species. Into a swan with Leda, into a bull with Europa, yes. He took away Ganymede, the most beautiful youth, on an eagle from Troy. Well, I'm going to have to really insist that I'm not Zeus then, because I don't turn into animals and shag them. No, quite right.

13:40No. What is your... I want to say that I know that your biggest pet peeve is when people ask you to explain stuff. No. It's not. So what is your biggest pet peeve? Oh, goodness me. People saying pass instead of die. That really pisses me off. What? People die, they don't pass. Oh, he passed. What, his driving test? What the fuck are you talking about? Oh, he died. He is dead. It's not because I want to shock people with the word death, because I want people to stop being afraid of the word, because saying past is, I hate euphemisms is basically the point. I hate little twee things that avoid the truth of a thing and try and dress it up.

14:24Just get to it. Put a lace doily over it. It's dead. Yeah. It's just dead. Yeah. Childhood crush. For context, mine was Stone Cold Steve Austin. Oh. Favourite wrestler. Jake, what was yours? Connie Huck. Blue Peter. From Blue Peter? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Is she still about as well? Yeah, she's still about. She hasn't passed? No, she's not passed. No, no, no, no. You will snort derisively when I tell you, because it's so embarrassing, but it was Donny Osmond. As in, from the Osmond brothers? As in, and they call it puppy love? They call it puppy love. Well, I guess they'll never know how the young heart really feels.

15:03Exactly. Grown-ups won't understand, and I loved that song so much because it spoke to me, because I was in love. And so I just thought Donny Osmond spoke for me, and I just thought he was my ambassador on earth. I also had a bit of a thing for Julie Walters. Did you? Yeah. Yeah, she was. She has great taste. She was like my guilty pleasure. I loved her in Dinner Ladies. She was superb. And Educate Rita. But we should be saying that your favourite in Dinner Ladies was surely Celia. Fuck off. Celia was in Dinner Ladies. Yeah, she was, wasn't she? I believe... No, I know. I know now. It's just twigged.

15:45Yeah. Yeah. I didn't think I could love her more. Yeah. She was in dinner. She was the sort of ditzy one. No, she was. She was the ditzy sort of. Yeah, she was. Philippa. Oh, good. She was Philippa. She was farting all over the fucking place. And then you spent two weeks with it. You never even were able to have a conversation about it. Oh, that's heartbreaking. Oh, my God. I absolutely love it. My guilty pleasure was Celia in Dinner Ladies. we were very excited when Nick Muhammad came on to find out that the the farting wasn't just sort of contained to that one famous shot no there was more than one yeah I'm afraid I sort of felt like it was an endless airstream she did warn us before that she's like I should tell you in that beautifully enunciated voice I should tell you when I get nervous I do fart a lot she must have been pricking it the whole time yes favourite word what is your favourite word you're only allowed to pick one okay they change but I love Saxon words.

16:42I love words that can only be English. And there's a whole family of words, which you might not notice, that have a particular quality that end in L.E. Like table. Table is the least interesting kind of one, but it doesn't in L.E. I'm thinking of words like bundle, fondle. Fondle. Yeah. Bungle. Trundle, bungle. Trundle. Yeah. Comfortable. Yeah, the obble words are just all the same, you know, but it's those little things. Fable. Trestle, fable. Mabel. Yeah. Table. But absolutely. And why do we keep getting them wrong? Snuggle. You know, they've just got to, oh, they have a friendliness about them.

17:28So a word I love is trundle. Trundle. It couldn't belong to any other language except English. Is your favourite word, Joe, still jelking? is that still your favourite word you like jailking it's in my top three yes which I didn't know anything about until I worked with Joe yeah you'd never heard of jailking have you heard of jailking I don't think I have well it actually it's Persian origin oh yeah it was the attempt to lengthen the shaft of the penis naturally with a reverse action like quite aggressive pulling to extend the shaft which confused me when I found out about this ancient practice because it worked, but only in the sense that you'd just become erect.

18:16So it confused me. It didn't actually make me any longer, but it did make me longer, if you know what I mean. Yes, yes. So it made me longer there and then. There and then, but not permanently. I'm not permanently erect. It doesn't work. But it is a wonderful word, like gelking. It is a good word. It's a gelking. Or mugwump. Mugwump's a good word, yes. That's American. They use it for Republicans. That's what I call my wife. The reason she's called Mugwump is because she can never make her bloody mind up. I typed in somebody who can't make their mind up and it was something to do with American politics that they couldn't make their mind up of what side Republican or...

18:53The vacillator. The what? A vacillator. Someone who vacillated. It's less of a nice... Mugwump's quite a nice nickname. If I said, Daisy, your nickname is Vacillator. Yeah, it sounds possibly something to do with masturbating with Vaseline. Doesn't it? Or just masturbating. Yes, that does work. Although petroleum jelly, you need a lot of detergent otherwise when you clean up. Right, yep. And now we're moving on to ikigai. Have you heard of the Japanese concept ikigai? I thought I was going to say, is that Japanese? No, if I have, I've forgotten. Well, its meaning is the reason for being. intersection of passion, mission, profession, or vocation.

19:37Basically, your reason for getting up in the morning. And the reason I'm asking you that is because you've achieved everything. Like, you've done so much in your life to the point of, well, why do you get up now? What is your icky guy? My icky guy isn't always there. Sometimes you do genuinely wonder what is, you know, what's the point? What's the point? Kenneth Williams' last word in his diary, oh, what's the point? Before he took his own life. Yeah, sometimes I can't, you know, I have spoken before about my bipolar disorder. And sometimes, of course, it is impossible to see much further than the next minute.

20:23It's just a black wall of kind of pointlessness. but lately mixture of my PB of 25 kilos of course which there's loads of room for improvement there there certainly is and that's the excitement well I started with nothing I started barely being on my lateral raises I could barely lift a packet of cigarettes if you like with lateral raises but they've got better two packs of cigarettes but and then other days I'm sort of manic and too excited and I'm doing nothing but making plans. But mostly I'm more kind of even these days. There's the husband I live with and love and that's made a huge difference, you know, not being alone, which I was for many years of my life because I was so obsessed with work and did nothing else but work.

21:15I mean, I partied a lot. I was a bad boy in the 90s and early part of this century. Yeah, I was partying, as we know. It's newspaper slang for cocaine. Well, there's no getting away from it. It doesn't just mean going to a party and having a champagne. He was a naughty boy. He was a naughty boy. But that you asked me about naughtiness. And, you know, that was connected to my mental health problems, I think. And indeed, it didn't help them, let's be honest. I don't know about you, Jake. but I would say that's the most in-depth and interesting intake questionnaire we've ever had. Yeah, that should really be the show, shouldn't it?

22:01Oh, is that just the intake? So that was the intro. Hello. Do you consent to being analysed by someone who's not a real doctor? Oh yes, absolutely. More so than by a real doctor, possibly. The speed at which you said yes to that. Oh yeah.

22:17Right, Stephen, from what you've told me and from the in-depth research that we've had, and you've mentioned several times about your naughtiness. But you've changed recently, haven't you? You're a knight of the realm. Hang on, why do you have that reaction to that? No, I shouldn't. I shouldn't. No, I know. It's that so English thing. Oh, no, no, no, please don't. But no, I'm very touched and proud to have been knighted and for the reason it was as well, for the things I've done in the mental health arena, which is what the citation, if that's the right word, was. But of course, being English, one wants to say, whoosh, whoosh, nonsense, no, behave.

23:01I worry that you've actually overcorrected yourself now. Yes, I'm too much a creature of the establishment and the rebel that got expelled from school and went to prison as a teenager has... has sort of metastasized into an old figure. Metastasized. Well, that's what cancers do. You know, they solidify. Well, let's help you break down that solidification. Liquidize me. Put me in the nutri-bullet of your therapeutic mind. We're stealing that. Thank you. Our mission today is to help you find your naughty side again. Okay, yeah. Is that fine? No, I think that's good. I'd always hoped to be a little impish.

23:47Impish. Below, yeah. Okay, well, let's get into it.

23:56Let's roll back the years, shall we? Yeah. Let's reconnect you with those rebellious times. Our research here says you were expelled at school. Were you expelled for? Well, it was a long and complicated story, but I'd been the youngest member of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London, as a young boy. I fell in love with the Sherlock Holmes stories. And if you really are a Sherlockian, if you love them, then you really do. And then you go into the details. You know how many steps there were from the street level up to the rooms that Holmes and Watson shared, Baker Street and those sort of details.

24:34I had got permission one weekend to leave school, take the train and go to London, and that I would come back the next morning. Anyway, I attended the Sherlock Holmes Society meeting. And on the way to the station the next morning, I passed a cinema. And it was showing Camberley, the movie Camberley. And I thought, that's really interesting. And I went in and I watched it. And it repeated, because in those days, you just go into a cinema and they just repeat it. You didn't need a new ticket. You could just stay in. So I saw it four times. And then I came out and it was late. On the trot? Yeah.

Read the full transcript

25:06Wow. And then it was on late afternoon by this time. And I thought, whoa. And I passed another cinema. and there was a Clockwork Orange was on. So I went to see that. And I stayed in love. You've gone from Cabaret to Clockwork Orange. Yeah. And I saw Fritz the Cat and The Godfather and all these films that were on. And I was 14 and 15. I think I might have been just 15 at this point. And anyway, so it was four days later that I got back to the school and the police had been called and my parents were called. They didn't know what had happened to me. You just fucked off to the cinema for four days.

25:42Where were you sleeping? I went back to the same hotel, but they didn't know what hotel it was. They couldn't remember what the name of the hotel was. They just knew that I'd been booked into a hotel. You got expelled for that, or that was your expulsion? It was the straw that broke the camel's back. I had been rusticated, as they called it, suspended, if you like. That had happened to me. And this time, it was just too much. They just said, I think the time has come for the parting of the ways. and then I was sent to a college, NORCAT, the Norfolk College of Arts and Technology in Kings Lynn.

26:17And I sort of ran away from there. I went to London and I stole some credit cards. So this is when you ended up going... And then eventually was arrested and sent... That's quite a big jump. You've gone from suspension, expulsion to prison. It's the standard leap down or up, whichever way you want to call it, of a child. you know, spare the rod, spoil the child, like the Aesop's fable. Start off by, you know, pinching a Brussels sprout from a market stall, and before long you're jemming open a window and coming out with a haul of silver from the rich man's house. So you end up in prison? Yes. How long for?

26:54Well, I wasn't sentenced. I wasn't given a prison sentence. I pleaded guilty, but the paperwork was such that I was wanted in six counties. Oh, my God. Because I'd been all over the place spending these credit cards. and the prosecution asked for time. So I had pleaded guilty by this point. So I was a con. When I originally arrived, I hadn't pleaded. And so I was in a brown uniform. I was a non-con and I could just sit in my cell all day and didn't have to do anything. But then after about two weeks, when they asked for more time, he said, you can now plead. And if you do plead, any time that you stay in custody, because I didn't want bail because I didn't want to put my parents through the misery of not having to be sure whether I'd run away again.

27:42It could count as a custodial sentence in case you get sentenced. So you know what I mean? It would count as time served. So I said, okay, I'll plead guilty. And so that means you arrive at the prison. This time I was stripped of my brown uniform but on a gray uniform. I was then a con and had to work in the prison. And we were painting toy soldiers. and then I got the really lush job of polishing the corridor with one of those round and round and round polishing machines. Did you get yourself a nickname? The Professor. He called me The Professor because I was this, as I am now, this figure who just goes on and I'm talking stuff.

28:22I think you've done all right in terms of nicknames, prisoner nicknames, The Professor. Yeah. It's a good balance of scary and actually, It's a fuckboy, isn't it? Let's be honest. I mean, you're going to have one.

28:43Right, we're just taking a quick break to thank Giacomo for sponsoring this episode. Whatever look you're into, they've got all the big brands that make you look like you've made the effort without the work. That's the key, isn't it? All the glory of being like, he's made an effort, and it's just being like, you've got no idea how little effort. Glory, glory, glory, Giacomo. Glory, glory, glory, Giacomo. Glory, glory, glory, Giacomo. And they've got all the brands and sizes you need. That's flipping brilliant. Wow. That is brilliant. That is better than Gillette. The best a man can get. I mean, it's better than a lot of the big advert jingles.

29:27Giacomo. style and brands for every man. Yeah, it could have made it rhyme. It was one sort of bar, really, of it to do. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Do you make, do you put a lot of, let me rephrase that. Do you feel like it takes a lot of effort for you to look good or do you think you have a system now where it's like, right, depending on the situation, bang, I know exactly what combination of stuff to go for? Yeah, it's more the latter, the bang. The latter, the bang, yeah, yeah, yeah. The latter bank. Once you've been around the block, you're like, okay. It's the latter bank. School run, I know what I need for this.

30:02Yeah, shorts. Podcast, I know what I need for this. Shorts. Gym, I know what I need for this. Shorts. Family holiday, what are you wearing? I put a Hawaiian shirt on. Nice. Yeah, with some, like, budgie smugglers. Really? Yeah. I go, if I'm going on holiday, everything's going on holiday. Yeah. I want my legs to go on holiday. The top, my thighs to be on holiday. So they need to be out. Do you know what I mean? It's only fair that they get a little peak of the sun. I love how you see your legs as sort of separate conscious entities to yourself. But all we really have to concentrate on is making those parts of us feel and look good, which is what I find Giacomo do.

30:41Really, really good. Really, really good. Yeah, they do do that. They do it so well and for everyone as well, because they've got sizes going from the smallest of sizes all the way up to 5XL, which I just think is great. Yeah, from small. I was trying to think of the French for small. In a Spanish accent, it's from small. That's my French. Okay, I've got it. I want to do my Italian. From petit to filou.

31:17Giacomo, style and brands for every man.

32:25Evening. Buyer's remorse. Buy a new car? I'll be moving in. Let's get started. Uh, sorry, I think there's been a mistake. I bought it from Carvana. You what? Yeah, great price. I even have seven days to love it or return it. So there's no... No, no buyer's remorse. More like buyer's rejoice? Ugh, I guess I'll let myself out. Congratulations. I mean it. Buyer's rejoice. Buy your car today on Carvana. Limitations and exclusions may apply. See our seven-day return policy at Carvana.com. So you've shed some light on your naughty childhood that you took to quite the extreme by going to prison. The prison thing made me absolutely concentrate on the fact that if I left even six months, it would be too late for me to get the exams and to do the entrance to the university that I wanted to go to.

33:14And so when I was let out of prison, they gave me two years probation. I immediately sorted myself out and did the exams and got a scholarship to Cambridge and then everything seemed to fall into place I met Hugh Laurie and Emma Thompson and we started doing these comedy things together and the BBC then wanted to do it and then we got a TV series and then Blackadder happened and then suddenly everything was open to me it was the most unbelievable luck and wonderful thing but I did still have the naughty seed in me because as I sort of mentioned this drug thing. But I mean, you know, which I can excuse.

33:50I can say no, it's because I had a mental illness and so on. And there is a truth in it. If you have bipolar disorder, you have these mood changes. If you're not being diagnosed, you don't know that it's a kind of illness, you just think, how am I going to poke myself up? And the only thing you can think of is someone has told you, have you tried chopping this thing up and putting it up your nose because it makes you kind of bounce and you don't, It certainly gets rid of depression and thirst, you know, and alcohol because cocaine causes you to be able somehow to scull more vodka than is conceivable.

34:25I'm interested in how there was a reassuring, hmm, was that audible? I thought I was just watching TV and going, well, that's bloody well true, yeah. But whenever I stopped, the mood was worse. So it didn't help. And eventually I had to face that. I had to come face to face with the fact that, you know, this trying to affect your mind with drugs or alcohol or anything of that kind is not the answer. So I sought help after a sort of crisis of leaving a play I was in and ran away. So, you know, there's obviously a serious side to all that. But I would say that, yes, I shouldn't have taken the drugs and they are stupid.

35:06and for all kinds of reasons, what they do to the infrastructure of workers in Colombia all the way through the supply chain of crime and murder and so on is horrific alone. Plus the fact that it's bad for you and it's just not a sensible thing to be on. On the other hand, there are moments I had, evenings I had, all-nighters playing poker with friends that I don't regret. And I did have, you know, I had a lot of friends who saw it as my dark side and stuff. what are you doing? A lot of interventions. A few people came and tried to, you know, say Stephen Stopp. John Cleese and Emma Thompson both had a go, I remember.

35:47And yet that naughty little particle inside me was kind of part of that experience, not the whole story. So when that stopped, I sort of sometimes, it's not exactly triggered, but I'll see a film or a TV drama where someone's, you know, partying, and I'll think, oh, oh, I missed that. And I'll go, no, you don't, Stephen. Oh, do I? I don't know. It's the awful thing. It's not that you can't do it, it's that you don't want to. I don't want to live a life of that. I actually enjoy going to bed early. This is what's going to make the next bit a little bit tricky after that then, because my job today is to make you a little bit naughty.

36:33And I actually want to bring you back into criminality a little bit. Jake, have you got any ideas? It would be nice to sort of ease back into committing a crime. I don't think... I think too crazy. Well, not violent crime. Is it for my gain, not like, say, break a window of a nasty fossil fuel company? No, no, no. It's for you. It's for you. It's got to be for me, isn't it? Yeah, a little bit of naughtiness to give you that little spike. I think something that uses your wit and intelligence. identity fraud feels quite a doable thing whose identity can he take well it's got to be yours isn't it you're taking the piss it's got to be your get your phone out pardon get your phone out and let's see I think you're misunderstanding the working relationship here well we're here now and we're going for it are you on Instagram or any of those things I know you're on fuck off I know you're on WhatsApp we share that you know ex-traitors group yes we do Joe actually just hit 1 million followers on Instagram.

37:35Thank you very much. Yeah, really appreciate it. Bless. What am I doing with my phone? Well, I wonder, I wonder. You can take it. Yeah, you're both on that Traitors WhatsApp group, aren't you? Fuck off. What if Stephen tries to pretend to be you and sees if he can get away with it? That could be quite fun. No. Yes, come on, give it to me. Sorry, that wasn't on my bingo card. Yes, give it to me. Okay, fine. Well, hang on, the speed. You haven't even given me a heads up. What's going on here? Well, no, if you know. I can't tell you how nervous I am. Oh, it's something you probably want to do anyway, so it's not really a bad thing.

38:13On that group, I'm not sure. I'm not a leader on that, mate. I am not one of the big dogs. Is it quite an active group, that group? This is what you are now... When I press the green... My dears, I'm considering an OnlyFans site. I haven't told you this, but I love to flash my junk. Is this a stupid idea? Send. So, Joe, just to recap, who's on that group? There's Alan Carr and Claudia Winkleman and Celia and everyone, all the traitors. I'm not sure how this is identity theft. I've done it as you. What the fuck am I going to do from the back of that, mate? Usually it's just... You ask me to be naughty.

38:59Yes, I know. I know this is meant to... Oh, it's far better than anything we could have planned. My usual is just chiming in every so often when people, you know, wishing people the best in their latest project or something, or doing a little gif or a little reaction. Well, this is your latest project, Joe. You're lovely OnlyFans. No, Celia's on there. Well, I think she'll approve. She'll say, go for it, Joe. It is actually a really supportive group on there. It is. I'm not entirely sure that is what I was looking for in that, but do you feel a bit naughty off the back of that? I do. I think we all felt the thrill.

39:37That was exhilarating stuff. That was the least naughty idea I had in my head.

39:44Sure.

39:48This episode is sponsored by the new Brave Ancestral Protein Powder from Ancient and Brave. I mean, a big, muscly fellow like you, you're going to be getting through a lot of protein. Yeah, well, I used to need lots of protein planned rugby, but I also need to keep on top of it now, you know, for everyday things like recovery, energy, or activities with the kids. And do you know why it's called Brave Ancestral Protein? I don't think I do, no. It's inspired by the way our ancestors ate, but also it's scientifically formulated for modern life. So the way you've got that raw caveman energy, but you also dress like a doctor.

40:21Well, talking of doctors, listen to this. It's a high-quality beef isolate blend with nutrient-dense organ meats and collagen peptides alongside B vitamins, digestive enzymes, and carefully selected functional ingredients such as cacao and beetroot. Well, as you know, Joe, you know, I've been trying to bulk out a little bit, but I feel like all the protein powers I have, they've got that artificial sweetener taste. Well, there's no artificial flavours, fillers, or additives in this. It's a naturally rich, indulgent blend, easier to digest than other proteins, and it's not all about bulking, Jake.

40:55This is about everyday needs. Here's what I like about Ancient and Brave. It says here that they've got a commitment to sustainability, they're a B Corp, and they're proud members of the 1 % of the planet, meaning 1 % of all their sales goes directly to environmental causes that protect our planet. That's great. Go to ancientandbrave.earth forward slash planet and subscribe to save 20 % off your first three orders and receive a free ritual scoop with your first purchase. Now flex those muscles, Joe. Give them the goods. Mmm. Yeah.

41:31Let's talk about how far you've come now. Sir Stephen Fry, I know we've talked about how uncomfortable you are, the classic British thing, but it's deserving. No, it is. Well, you accept it and that's what it is. Do you get to keep the sword that he... Certainly not. You get a nice medal. Not any sword? No blade? No blade. No bow? Leave your weapons here. No, no spurs. No, no armour. Oh, okay. It's a decent sort, actually. Is there like an after-party in the palace? Individuals hold them. I held one at the Goring Hotel because friends of mine who'd been nighted before me had done it, and I thought, oh, that's clearly the thing to do.

42:09So like Johnny Ive. So you throw your own party? Yeah. Like if someone gets a hole in one on a golf course, they have to go in and buy everyone around. Basically, that's it, yeah. Wild. On your driver's licence, are you a sir? No, I haven't changed anything like that. But is there an option? You know, if you're filling out a questionnaire, at the start it always goes, what's your title? It's Mr., Mrs., Ms., Doctor. Usually they don't have Sir there, do they? They might have other. Do you get a discount? What are the actual perks? Is it like a concession you get? No, I don't think there are any perks, to be honest.

42:48People in some restaurants very much want to say it all the time. Sir Stephen and Sir Stephen. You wouldn't have been saying Mr Fry, Mr Fry, Mr Fry as much. Is it true you're actually friends with the king? Well, I mean, friends is a strong word, but I've known him for decades and I'm always very pleased to see him and he's kind to me and invites me to some things. Have you ever played paintball with him? I've never played paintball with him. Hide and seek in the palace? At Sandingham, I've been a guest many times very kindly. He's invited me. And sometimes I remember, you know, there are occasions when you would have, like, his artistic weekends with Tom Stoppard and Barry Humphreys.

43:39And we'd all do a party piece. We'd all, you know, do a reading or something. I honestly thought you were going to say, yes, we all played hide and seek. No, we didn't play hide and seek. No, he's a very friendly, warm, kindly person. Is he warm enough that you've exchanged friendship bracelets? No. No? I was thinking, I had some bracelets made over Christmas to give some friends, which were twisted leather with a little silver plaque on it that had T-F-I-O carved on them. Thank fuck I'm old. Good. And you didn't send one to him? No, I didn't. That would not. But there's a chance. Quite right.

44:18So, okay, no pillow fights. No, exactly. And definitely no tickle fights. No tickle fights. So not really that close a friend. No, exactly. And I never claimed I was. No, no, that was just an exploration of it. It's fine.

44:36Shall we check out if we've had anything? Right. Okay. Do you offer a free magnifying glass to your subscribers? Who's that? Who's that? Joe Wilkinson? No, who was that? No, it was the bad big dog. Oh, Jonathan, of course. JR. Of course it was. What I cannot get, for fuck's sake, there's more and more people reading it. Oh, Mark's just read it. Mark's typing. Oh, fuck. Charlotte's typing. Whoa! Oh, you're a twat. You have made... I am what you have made me. You know, I had very little respect on that group in the fucking first place. Oh, no, no. I was clinging on for dear life. And then now, what have you done, Jake?

45:25This is horseshit. You can't de-naughty me. Oh, God, how's that turned around? That was your naughty streak. You're far more in charge of yourself and your self-image than being concerned about that. Even if I turn around and tell the truth, I don't think a lot of them will believe in it. I actually think a lot of that group are going to go... And I'm in the group and I can always deny it. And do we think that your word holds more weight than mine? Yes, we do. Yes, we do. Yes, yes. Okay, that's fine. I can tell by your face and that little cheeky smirk. It's back. The imp is back. The imp is back.

46:06So we have sort of succeeded. You've done it for me. I didn't know you had it in you. I thought your only psychological gift was to say the word hundy a lot of times and say big dog a few times as well. There's more to you than that. Not sure how to take that in exchange. But thank you. It's both a compliment and an insult. Yeah, I think it was more of the latter. Yes. That is the end of our session today. Hooray. Thank you, Doctor. No, you are most welcome. For every client that we have through these doors, we offer a woe-wee pop. Oh, thank you. I'm going to have a red one. Oh, God. And now I'm going to have a purple one.

46:43Oh, a purple one. That's yours to take with. Thank you. And we also offer a badge. So you can remember the journey that you've been on in today's session. Jake, what are we thinking for names? We have got... What are we thinking of names for the badge? Well, we were floating between a few. We thought I'm a very naughty boy, still a rascal. Polymath by day, rascal by night.

47:08But I think we have finally settled with I am a very, very naughty boy and that's for you, Sir Stephen. Oh, I like it. I am a very naughty boy. That's terrific. Thank you so much. Look at that. Sir Stephen Fry, everybody. Thank you. Oh, bless you all. Gents, absolute gent. Thank you. Heedle. Heedle. The professor. The professor. The professor. Enough. No, enough. What's the matter? Who's he there? My boy. I think I've gone the right way for a smack body from someone, haven't I? I think you've been a little bit naughty. I have been a bit naughty. I've been a bit naughty. But you know what? Like Stephen said, you've got to enjoy your life.

47:45My icky guy is just sort of being naughty with this guy. Why are you saying it? Why are you saying icky guy? It sounded like my ick for a guy. My ick for a guy is people who can't take themselves too seriously. On that note, I mean, he's gone, but surely the replies have kept coming in. Okay, great. And now you want to, bear in mind this was your idea. Yeah, go on. Even though the client, Sir Stephen Fry, was meant to get in touch with his naughty side, I didn't think he'd go, yeah, let's sabotage my boss. Who's replied? Who's replied? So JR's come in. Right, brilliant. Right, Joe Wilkinson's then chimed in.

48:22I genuinely think you'd make a few quid. Hmm. Interesting. Stephen's quite quick on the group. Stephen's just left the door. Stephen's just out the door now. I see. Interesting. Before I've been able to explain the situation of what's gone on, he's gone, superb idea. I'd subscribe and pay top dollar.

48:44Stephen's gone, I can picture it in surprising detail. Joe Wilkinson, ditto to that.

48:54He's completely shafted me. I'm going to have to formulate some sort of plan to get out of this, because Stephen, I can just sense, the imp in him, which we made him rediscover, is going to really run with this. From the publisher

Knight of the realm, national treasure and lifelong rule-breaker Stephen Fry enters Dr Joe Marler's clinic for a session that asks one big question: has he overcorrected?

Once notorious for his youthful mischief - including a spell in prison and some truly decadent party years - Stephen reflects on how far he’s travelled from troublemaker to establishment favourite, and whether something vital was left behind along the way.

The conversation moves from rebellion to royal friendships, as Joe tests just how close Stephen really is to King Charles, before steering the session into deeply questionable territory.

What starts as a light-hearted nudge towards naughtiness soon escapes Joe’s grasp entirely, triggering identity fraud, the Celebrity Traitors WhatsApp group, and a message that no one - least of all Joe - was prepared for.
