Key claims & notable examples

  1. GTA 6 “Good Times State Vice City Collection” costs $400 but does not include the game. It’s a Vice City-themed merch box with items like Maka the Gator figure, Oakley sunglasses, New Era snapback, magnetic mirror, swizzle spoon, razor blade keychain, crossbody bag, shot glass, enamel pins, stickers, and a double-sided souvenir poster. Host notes Rockstar previously included physical maps in standard editions; they ask if GTA 6 will too.
  2. Rockstar reportedly spent nearly $1M on a “Welcome to Vice City” sign in Miami; Miami-Dade expects $975K from the agreement. Host discusses possible further city takeovers/events.
  3. Microsoft called Age of Empires Studio (World’s Edge) before folding it under Activision; nearly half the staff reportedly laid off and the next project canceled.
  4. Bethesda boss Jill Braff says Obsidian will remain a distinct team under Bethesda, keeping existing leadership structure.

2:36What's up, everybody, and welcome in to Kind of Funny Games Daily for a lovely Thursday, September 24th, 2026. I'm one of your show hosts, Snowbike Mike. And yes, Brad, I'm wearing a jean jacket. Okay? I'm wearing the jean jacket. It's a big deal today. My co-host for today is a very special guest, Bradley Shankar from Mobile Syrup. Brad, how are you today? I'm good. Thank you so much for having me. And let me just say you are rocking that jacket. It looks awesome. Brad, give me a high five. Hell yeah. You're starting the day off today. They said I'd never wear it again, Brad. Bought this for a cool$100 at BlizzCon.

3:14threw it in my closet forgot about it for about 14 days here i am now wearing it it looks good looks good brad it's great to have you in the building of course you have been on a previous kind of funny games show before i believe it was the kind of funny games cast for wolverine review yeah greg very kindly asked me to fill in to do the games cast for the wolverine preview and then i knew i was going to be in sf so i just hit him up and said because he kindly invited me back to the show and the rest is history that's great of course brad for people that may not have watched that preview of wolverine they don't know who you are who are you where do you work what do you do yeah i work for mobile syrup uh we're a tech publication in toronto i'm the gaming editor so i kind of focus on uh games specifically from a canadian lens um and then i do a lot of like streaming coverage and uh wearables smartphone that sort of thing best game that encapsulates Canada when we talk about a Canadian lens what's the game that like that's Canada right there that's a great question that's Canadian uh we've been having a lot lately there's been a really nice boom uh of games set in Canada I've been trying to like cover a lot of them I would say honestly I think Venba um that came out in the last couple years that's from Visay Games in Toronto uh and it's about this uh immigrant story uh about an Indo-Canadian family that you know settles into Toronto and sort of tries to, you know, acclimatize and, you know, stay connected to their culture while, you know, being in Canada.

4:46And I think that kind of sums up the sort of universal immigrant experience. I know a lot of people around the world, you don't have to be Indian or Canadian to love it. So Brad, that was a great poll. Great job on that. I like that a lot. Good job. Brad, of course, what have you been playing? It's September. It is a packed September. It's a packed fall season. Everyone's playing some cool, awesome games. What are you playing lately? Yeah, a couple of things I can't talk about for embargo, but in terms of like recent reviews, I just reviewed Silent Hill Townfall, which I agreed with a lot of you guys.

5:17Really great atmosphere and, you know, sort of moment to moment stealth gameplay, but then it kind of gets a little frustrating with the puzzles and sort of one hit kill enemies. And then before that was Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave, which was a very big game. Big game. How many hours did you put into it? Did you beat it? Who did you choose as your flame lords? Yeah, I put in close to 100 hours. I did Lita. I picked Lita because I liked the sort of dancer class. I thought that was a fun twist on it. And yeah, I saw her story through to the end. And then I did a little bit of Theodora's as well just to check it out.

5:53But it's like a very big game. That was honestly one of my issues with it. Like it's a good game, but I think it does overstays welcome a little bit. And how sort of interwoven everything is. But I'm right there with you. I am 70 hours plus in. I did Theodore and Kai story. I really loved both of their stories. I loved the gameplay. I do agree with you. It is a massive game. I'm so excited for the Fire Emblem audience to go out there and play it or newbies to the tactics audience. I think you'll really enjoy this game, but it is too big. It might be too big. It might be too big, but I'm on the final boss right now.

6:27Still just banging into it, unfortunately. So I'm trying my best to overcome, but I will say my one games cast games tip for this game is recruit a lot of people and just keep leveling them up. Cause I was surprised of like, I recruited a fair amount, but when you get to the final areas, it's like, Oh, there's a lot of people coming into this battle and maybe I needed more and maybe they should have been higher levels on this. Absolutely. Couldn't agree more. I didn't recruit enough people when I went into the like final act, like woefully unprepared. The game was saying you could like use like up to 17 units in a single battle and I had maybe 11 or 12.

7:00Yeah, I feel like if you go with like the one character route, that's how it feels. And so yeah, you definitely got to go like two, maybe three and just keep recruiting people. You're making me smile. You're playing some good games. What are you most excited for? What's your most anticipated game? Honestly, Final Fantasy Resonance. I'm a big Final Fantasy fan. It's my favorite series and we've been wanting HD 2D Final Fantasy for so long and this is finally giving it to us. So I'm really excited. Good selection. I wanted you to say GTA 6 so we could roll into the news, but I'll take Final Fantasy Resonance because that's a great selection.

7:33Are you excited for a$400 collector's edition that does not include the game? Not very. Save it. We're going to talk all about that because, of course, this is Kind of Funny Games Daily. You can watch live on Twitch and on YouTube, and, of course, you can be part of the show by superchatting on youtube.com slash Kind of Funny Games, where I will read your thoughts, opinions, and questions throughout the show. Of course, we couldn't do this without you, all the incredible listeners, watchers, viewers all around the globe. So thank you so much for supporting us. And we couldn't do without our Patreon producers over on patreon.com slash kindoffunny.

8:06So thank you to Omega Buster, Delaney the Psalm Twining, and Michael Crescento. Thank you for your support. Let's begin with what is and forever will be the Roper Report.

8:21It's time for some news. We have five stories today. Baker's does her. And we're going to kick it off with story number one. GTA six is getting a$400 collector set that doesn't include the game. This coming from Kate under at IGN. GTA six is getting a$400 collector set filled with vice city themed goodies, but it won't include a copy of the game. Rockstar Games has announced a collector's set for GTA 6 known as GTA 6, the Good Times State Vice City Collection. The$400 box will not include a copy of the game, but will include a bunch of premium merchandise, including a pair of Oakley sunglasses, a bobblehead, a hat, pins, stickers, and a variety of other items themed after the game's crime-ridden paradise.

9:13The set is available to pre-order now through Rockstar's website and will release on November 19th. You're probably asking yourself, Snowbike Mike, Brad, what does this include for$400? Let me tell you the list. Of course, what's included inside the collector's set. A six-inch figure of Maka the Gator with stashed compartment, matte black GTA VI Oakley frog skin sunglasses with prism sphere lenses, New Era 940 A-frame snapback hat with Vice City Leonida embellishments, Macca the Gator magnetic mirror, Vice City swizzle spoon, Vice City razor blade keychain, Leonida Keys crossbody bag, Chunky the Manatee shot glass, Leonida Keys enamel pins set in a custom metal tin, premium stickers in a stash bag and a double-sided souvenir poster showcasing full Leonida landscape.

10:17One interesting thing to note here is that previous GTA and Red Dead games have historically always included a physical map in the standard edition of the game. We've reached out to Rockstar to see if the map is included in the boxed copies of GTA 6 or if players will have to shell out a few hundred dollars, a few hundred bucks to get one. Brad,$400 for the GTA 6 Collector's Edition. You heard what's inside. No game. What do you think? Yeah, I mean, you know, it's not necessarily surprising that it doesn't include the game. Unfortunately, we're seeing that so much with these collector's editions lately for games.

10:58So, you know, that is disappointing, though not necessarily surprising. I will say it does seem cool, at least that it's a lot of sort of physical merchandise as opposed to just sort of digital DLC stuff. So, you know, these are actually like keepsakes that you can have. So that at least adds some value to it, I think. But yeah, definitely a bit of a bummer that it doesn't include the game. Yeah, I think it's expected. I totally agree with you. I think we were kind of going that way with the collector's edition nowadays of the expectations. Unfortunately, the game is not included in this. And I know that's crazy to say at a$400 price tag, but I was not shell shocked by this.

11:34I love that the story includes it three separate times to make sure the reader understands. But I definitely already knew this was going to happen. This to me is a pretty wild head scratcher. I was not impressed with the GTA 5 collector's edition. That was the money bag lock bag. I really thought they could have done something better with that and the new era hats. This to me reads like I'm at a gaming convention and I'm at the mystery box booth where the guy has a thousand different themed mystery boxes and they're all on sale for$60, but you know, it's just a bunch of worthless crap for about$5.

12:09And this is what that gives to me right here. I am really stunned by a team like Rockstar who was known for quality and awesome games that we can't get a collector's edition right. I mean, yeah, do I want these 6-inch Maka the Gator with stash compartment? That sounds cute. That sounds fun. But when you see it, you're like, wow, this is kind of like the prized item out of this box. The matte black GTA 6 Oakley frog skins. Man, Oakley makes cool sunglasses. These are not those. You know, like this is not the Oakleys that I would think in a$400 box that would get me excited. I honestly really felt like we were going to go pit Viper on this.

12:51If I'm being a sunglass guy, thought pit Viper probably would have been the company you teamed up with. But these Oakley super generic Oakley glasses, not doing it for me. And the snapback hat, of course we go back to the snapback hat and I just look at it and I go, man, I'm so disappointed in this because I really think that rockstar games and grand theft auto and just what that carries. It's like for$400, we could have figured out something better. but you know here we are a swizzle spoon a razor blade keychain uh the cross body bag there's like there's fun looks to this there's cool ideas but it just feels like a bunch of waste brand and i don't like being a debbie downer about it but sometimes you got to kind of be real no that's fair i mean it is a kind of a random grab bag of stuff and there's not even like a you know statue of uh jason and lucia i guess yeah i mean i yeah i guess like what my mind goes to is like do i want a jason and lucia statue right as well i don't know what i want there's something else in there maybe it is that but there's something more than this razor key chain that like just isn't doing it for me it will be very i mean let's be real this is going to sell out this will go out on the secondary market at an inflated price outrageous prices we will see what these items look like in a year to five years from now if people are selling these and somehow this razor key chain is going to sell for 25 to 50 on ebay because people actually want it or somebody held on to it they're like yo i shouldn't sell this you know uh i want to do one highlight i do like that magnetic mirror that we are we're kind of now if we're gonna run it back of like now let's talk possibly about it mike we are getting the fun vice city kind of uh scarface vibes if we're alluding to it of like here's the magnetic mirror here's your razor blade keychain we're having a little fun with that right like i do like the vibe on that one uh the swizzle spoon in the shot glass okay like yeah maybe i'm making martinis stirring up some sort of drinks with that that's meant to be a cocaine spoon right i mean exactly kevin thank you you're going right to it we got cocaine spoons we got cocaine keychains we got beers to do cocaine off of like yeah that's fun but like i'm a gamer i'm not doing cocaine so i don't need any of that uh brad any positives from this that you can show me that you like yeah i mean i i agree with you the the whole like you know 80s vice city theme is fun with it um yeah probably that i mean i like I like Mecca the Gator.

15:32I like the manatee that they got. That's clearly Chunky the Manatee. Going to be one of the kind of logos we're going to see. You're going to see a lot of this, right? We know that the manatees are kind of the football team out there. We've seen the jerseys, right? Where is Mecca the Gator going to be? Is this some sort of Bucky the gas station that we'll see at all the gas stations down in Vice City? Where's Mecca the Gator going to be put in the game? I'm excited to see that because this is all themed in game, right? So where will I see these characters and where will I laugh? We'll find out.

16:02Going down, the double-sided souvenir poster showcasing the full Leonida landscape. Of course, GTA 5 Collector's Edition had a special poster where you'd flip it, and it was the blacklight one where it showed you the special areas that you should go find on the map. What kind of fun will they have with that? We read from Cade Onder. He says, one interesting note here is previous GTA and Red Dead games have historically always included a physical map in the standard edition of the game. We've reached out to Rockstar to see if the map is included in box copies of GTA 6. Brad, if you had to take a guess, will GTA 6 have the map included in standard editions of the game?

16:43That's a good question. I feel like they might save that for like a deluxe edition type thing. yeah I mean it would be nice if it was in standard editions but they just seem to be de-emphasizing the physicality of the standard edition like you know you don't even get the game itself in it as a code so yeah I could see it not having that. I am reading the live chats Twitch has a lot of no's I love on YouTube that it's a lot of no's and two yes's that still believe in Rockstar doing that yeah I mean this is something as I grew up with Grand Theft Auto 3 through Vice City, San Andreas as four, five, and onward, right?

17:20If like, those were prized possessions of mine. I loved that double-sided poster of having the fun front side of the cover of the box and then on the backside being the map, right? Like, those are important. Those are special to me. I want those. Yeah, I want to be like the YouTube chat who believes that maybe we will get that. But nowadays, right now, whenever I buy a physical edition of a game, it's usually just the plastic box and one piece of paper, not even the disc. and it has a download code with 15 letters and numbers and that's it right so it's not instilling in me the rest of the industry and world that like yeah rockstar games is going to shove in a fun double-sided poster for me to feel good about it no i agree i think i could easily see them just justifying that too by just saying like the most people are just going to look at a map on their phone or like a youtube video or a tablet or whatever so you don't even need a physical one anyways like i could easily see them saying something like that but back in the early 2000s like that was the holy grail oh yeah today's today's kids won't appreciate they don't appreciate like i did back in the day that would get a frame or what it really was is it would start off with about a thousand thumbtack holes inside of it because i'd be moving it all around my room and then i finally put it in a frame and it's like i love that so much i miss it so i hope that we get that we'll see but it looks like you get something in the collector's edition some fun stuff the pins the stash bag let me know in the comments down below are you jumping on the 400 collector's edition of gta 6 and are you excited for any of these items and what are the items that you're excited for brad i think you would look good in those glasses though i appreciate those glasses Gondor's Condor writes in with the super chat and says, I'm old enough to remember buying consoles for$400.

19:10Yes.

19:14It isn't a collector's edition SKU. It's a merch box is what Needy Mango says. So, of course, yeah, you can look at it like that. It is a fun collector's or, yeah, a merch box. Collector's edition. Yeah, I guess. Interesting. Yeah, we're in a different spot on that one now. Uh, let's see. Stanford says a$400 box of stuff, a vinyl soundtrack release, but no physical disc release at all is wild. Not wrong. That's the world we live in right there. Uh, let's see. Uh, Kabal says to be fair, the$80 version of the game doesn't have the game either. That is correct. You're getting a download code is right.

19:56we have Cyrus writes hello from Toronto oh hello right there is right thank you all so much for the super chats keep them coming as we move in to story number two more Grand Theft Auto news Grand Theft Auto 6's Miami takeover begins as Rockstar spends nearly one million dollars on welcome to Vice City signage this coming from Kate Onder again at IGN Rockstar Games has reportedly spent nearly$1 million to install a, quote, welcome to Vice City, end quote, sign in Miami as part of Grand Theft Auto 6's marketing push. Fans have been monitoring the construction of the sign for the last few days, and it's finally complete.

20:42The sign was lifted to the top of the Casilla Center by helicopter this afternoon and firmly installed on the roof. Now, those who fly over the arena will be able to look out their window and see a greeting from Rockstar itself. You can see the sign below, of course. We'll show you the image if you're watching live. According to the Miami Herald journalist Doug Hanks, Rockstar Games paid just shy of$1 million to install this sign. Miami-Dade is expecting to collect$975 ,000 for the sign from Rockstar as part of a marketing agreement. As of right now, it's unclear how else Rockstar plans to market GTA 6 in Miami, but there are extensive conversations with the city in August that involved pitches for various events, a takeover of the airport, and more.

21:33Whether any of those will actually happen are up in the air at the moment. The marketing push begins, Brad. It brings a smile to my face because I get excited on this kind of stuff, and I like this. Step one, put it on top of the basketball arena for all the awesome flyovers. Of course, we know the Miami Heat will hit the hardwood in October, really kick off the season in November. When? When the game comes out. So that means every time we fly over the Miami Heat's arena, showing off the Greek freak and Bam Adebayo, what will we see? Vice City right on top of that. I like the idea. I think it's a great idea.

22:14Yeah, it makes it feel real. Like it's finally happening. Like, you know, I've been waiting for this game for so long And it's one thing to sort of go on Netflix and do a stream and saying, oh, this is the game. But to actually have this physical presence, seeing these signs in real life, like it's happening. Like, I think it's a great way to say signal that the hype is real. It's it's coming. One million dollars for the sign. Miami-Dade is expected to collect nine hundred seventy five thousand dollars from that sign. Miami is probably going, hell yeah. Why don't you help stimulate our economy right now?

22:45I'll get some money getting pushed into this for your marketing ideas. Brad, what are some other fun ideas you heard? Some pitches for various events, a takeover of the airport and more. What other things might you do? Let's put your marketing cap on when it comes to GTA 6. What are some fun things you might do around the city of Miami when it comes to GTA and marketing? It's a good question. I mean, it's easy to just imagine like on like the pier, like just having some of the like really cool sports cars that they have from the game. You can like get a selfie with them. It, you know, maybe having like a launch party for the some of the soundtrack, I think could be really cool.

23:26You know, kind of capturing that like Phil Collins vibe from the earlier GTAs. Yeah, it's crazy. There's just there's so much they could do. And not even just in Miami, like everywhere. Like it's it's crazy to think like like even back home in Ontario where I'm from. we have like these Marilyn Monroe buildings that we call them that kind of twist. And some people were like, because Rockstar does have a studio in Toronto, just outside of Toronto, actually. People are like, oh, is that like inspired by those buildings? Like, and even if it's not, it's easy that they could kind of lean into the fun of something like that, like locally.

24:01I like that. Yeah. I'm excited to see what they do. A launch party or a Spotify record party is a great idea, right? You can think of all the artists that are going to be hot, hip and new. And then, of course, the old school artists, right? Bring them all in for one of the Miami nightclubs. Have that go all night with a big party. I'm sure we'll see something like that. Of course, the airport takeovers, it reminds me of every gaming convention you've ever been to. You arrive at the airport and it says, welcome to BlizzCon. Welcome to PAX West. I'm sure they'll have that with Vice City themed GTA 6 stuff.

24:33It will be interesting of like, where do you draw the line though? Right? Because my mind goes to like, well, let's team up with the NBA. let's team up with MLS and messy and put them in these jerseys. But like, is there a line of like, Hey, maybe I don't want to promote the ultra mature, extra violent video game on the NBA hardwood with a Jersey. Or are we in 2026 where it's like, you know what, Mike money's money. And the vice city night doesn't have to show a bunch of graphics shooting and we can just play video games. I don't know. I think the latter, honestly, I think, yeah, at this point, GTA is such a cultural phenomenon.

25:09on it like and realistically let's be honest like a lot of kids are going to be playing it anyways like their parents will buy it for them they'll find another way to play it so i don't think like the age stuff matters um they're just it's going to be everywhere yeah i i'm excited to see i mean shout out to xbox a couple months ago or last year if you remember above miami they had two helicopters flying over and they had sway lee one of the uh rappers he was playing the video game he He was playing Ninja Gaiden 4 from one helicopter to another with one giant billboard television playing the game.

25:44And it's like, yeah, we've gone to that part in 2025 and beyond. Where it's like, you can get super crazy with marketing. And Rockstar has that infinite money glitch. So what kind of crazy stuff will they do? But here we are. Step number one, put a sign on top of the basketball arena. Let's get the lights on. Let's see how crazy it gets going. 33:03You know how many mentions blessings put in the goddamn shows? Absolutely not fucking one. Now, who do we blame for this? Joey Noel. She was almost late to work twice in a row. Don't forget it. You can go support Team Orange on their, you know, continued run for another fifth championship. Pretty amazing. How are you with video game trivia, Brad? So-so. Okay, okay. Yeah, you know, you'd probably be better than Andy. probably be better than me maybe team purple needs some help i'm canadian i have to be humble oh that's good you guys appreciate you being humble uh brad let's jump in to story number three but before we do that i have a quick couple of um super chats that i just want to jump into uh kuya j j writes in says special heat uniforms in the vice city colors would be dope of course It would be dope.

35:24They already do the Miami heat nights. They have the city Jersey additions and it is already so close to the vice city ones. It'll be interesting to see how you get that like even closer. Cause they're already rocking the blue, the pink, the black, and the white that like already look Miami vice city. So how do you get that closer? I don't know. I just shoving a logo on it probably, but we'll see what they do. But yeah, you can see they, they already have the city edition jerseys and they rock that. I guess you just tell them to rock that and you just call GTA night. I don't know. I don't know.

35:52But great super chat there. Let's jump into story number three. This one I don't like. Story number three. Microsoft called Age of Empires Studio before handing it over to Activision, with nearly half of the staff all gone. This coming from Tom Phillips at IGN. Age of Empires Studio's World's Edge lost almost half of all employees this week as part of Microsoft's latest round of job losses. The cuts form part of the 268 staff let go across the wider Xbox business as part of a projected target of 3 ,200 job losses forecast over the next course of this current financial year. It was announced on Monday that World's Edge would now be part of Activision, though details on how the studio's employees had been impacted remained unclear.

36:47In the days since, however, staff have now reported via social media that nearly 50 % of the company was now out of work while its next project has been canceled. Quote, I am, of course, disappointed that this is the way the time with World's Edge and Age ends for myself and many of my talented teammates that were also impacted. We had some great plans for what's next. End quote. Wrote Adam is green, formerly the company's studio creative director who had served at World's Edge for 16 years. Quote, I hope the team that remains can rise to the occasion down the line. End quote. Following that up, we have another one.

37:30Quote, our studio was reorganized to be under the Activision umbrella, added Andrew Martz, formerly a senior software engineer at this studio. As part of the reorg, our next project was canceled and a large chunk of our studio was laid off. I was part of that layoff. End quote. We have another quote coming in. Quote, it was nice working with you. Was not a message I expected to get while on vacation. Wrote another laid off staff member, former lead principal software engineer, Greg Snook. Like many others, I was cut loose for Microsoft today. Turns out my last day with building access is also my exact 25th year or 25 year higher anniversary.

38:13End quote. Really unfortunate stuff there, Brad. My heart goes out to that entire team. And of course, all 268 staff members laid off in this last round of layoffs. It really sucks. And for me as a Age of Empires fan, Age of Empires 2 being so special to me as a kid. Of course, the excitement with Microsoft and Age of Empires 4. Yes, the latest one. I really enjoyed that. I love the hands-on history lessons. I always hype that up whenever we talk about that game, when we talk about edutainment and that fun factor that they brought. It really does suck to hear all that and to hear that half of the team has now been let go.

38:54The next project has been canceled. They're under Activision. We'll see where it goes now. But Brad, are you an RTS guy? what are your thoughts on this round of layoffs? Yeah. Like you, I kind of grew up with the age of empires in our like classrooms. They had the games like loaded on the computer so we could play that. So I have a lot of like nostalgia for that. Admittedly never really played the newer ones, but obviously kind of appreciated them from afar. But yeah, I mean, my reaction to this is just, you know, that it sucks. Like it seems like there's no sort of rhyme or reason or, or plan here with what Xbox is doing.

39:28They're just kind of laying off people across all the studios. It's sort of that spreadsheet math. You know, it'll make sense reorganizing everything under different umbrellas. But, you know, Activision is not historically like the RTS company, right? And studios have different, you know, cultures. They have different autonomies. And just sort of, you know, lumping what's left of Age of Empires studio, you know, in Activision doesn't mean it's just going to work just because you put it under Activision. So it's just, it's really frustrating to see this. And I feel for all these devs, especially like you're mentioning, like the 25th anniversary, like what a way to celebrate that.

40:04Right. Yeah. That one really hurts. Right. I served at world's edge for 16 years. I found out I was laid off while on vacation. Turns out my last day in the building was my exact 25 year hire anniversary. Right. Like those are the personal stories. That is the realness of all these layoffs, right? It is very easy to glance at the page and kind of just sweep it by of 260 people got laid off. This is where we've been at for the past year plus, especially with Microsoft and the video games industry. And, of course, the world as a whole when it comes to the job market. It is easy to gloss over that and your eyes glaze over.

40:39I've read this so many times. But the personal side of it of like, man, that really hurts. That person was on vacation. Now they learn they don't even have a job when they come back home. I was celebrating 25 years. that hurts especially when you put up so much time and dedication into something like that and a company right that i give you all my time and effort throughout my life hopefully you are supported and taken care of that was always the dream but that's not the reality of where we are today right and especially for a team like world's edge who probably doesn't get a lot of love in the mainstream video game culture right rts's are a very small market i'm sure um they did a great job with giving support to age of empires two age of empires three of course age four with the latest release then you talk about age of mythology right like they had a lot of support a lot of content a lot of games out there i just don't think the market is big for an rts and i've talked about it many of times on the x cast and the recent shows of like my dream always was world's edge for somehow to be under blizzard and helping them create another starcraft or warcraft rts which is crazy that a week ago we just had announced at blizzcon rts content coming to warcraft 3 after what it was i don't know 26 years i don't forget the year is crazy right and so my dream is always well there's a talented team that understands rts's did a great job got to highlight them controller support on console with age of empires that was a big one of course halo wars did a great job as well but this team did really push controller support on a big time rts on your console that i really really love so that was my dream but the reality is clear right asha sharma came in she took in the data for the first 100 days she gave you the plan of hey i'm going to restructure i'm going to thin out a lot of what you're seeing we're going to focus on the big titles and as much as it hurts every single day that sees all these layoffs that was her plan and We will see if that pays off or not, whether you like it or not.

42:41But the plan is clear as day. She told you what's going to happen. We are now living that. And I do think that the RTS side of the gaming landscape is probably very small to look at you and go, hey, CEO of this company that has to make a lot of big time decisions. We're the team that needs to stay when it's like, I don't know if that's as popular as we all want it to be and believe in. So my heart goes out to all the people affected. 50%. We will see what they do under Activision. As you said, my mind doesn't go to Activision RTS land. So do they become a support studio somewhere? Do they find something for them on a smaller scale?

43:18Positive. You ready for this? Here's a little spin for it. The next Halo project is under Activision as well. Halo Wars. Let's figure out this team on a smaller size. Let's focus. Let's make a small Halo Wars style game. Maybe a turn-based RTS instead with Halo. I don't know. but you do have a layup there of like, maybe we can find a better path here. I'm not happy about it though, Brad. No. As much as I try to put on a strong face and grip the reality of what's happening there, I'm not happy about this at all. I really am sad about it, but I wish I could know what their next project would have been.

43:56Would it have been more Age of Empires? Would it be something different? It's another Elder Scrolls online, ZeniMax online team situation where it's like, oh we had another project but we're not going to get there and it's like oh damn i wish them all the best uh really hurts out there and you know we'll see where it goes i'll play age of empire soon just to keep it in my heart a little bit let's keep it going brad uh let's switch gears over to story number four keeping it with microsoft and xbox bethesda boss confirms obsidian will remain a distinct team, Vicky Blake at GBiz writes. Bethesda boss Jill Braff has written to all staff to confirm that grounded developer Obsidian Entertainment will remain a distinct team retaining its existing leadership structure.

44:49Yesterday, September 22nd, Xbox announced a sweeping reorganization of its internal studios. It moved Obsidian under Bethesda, transferred legendary UK studio Rare and ownership of the Halo franchise to Activision proposed the closure of Ninja Theory and confirmed a further 268 job cuts. The news was detailed via an Xbox Wire post following earlier reports of planned layoffs. In response, Braff circulated a memo to staff describing the Obsidian move as, quote, primarily a change in reporting structure, end quote, and assuring developers that the creative identity and strengths that make Obsidian distinct will remain at the core of the studio.

45:35Quote, today's announcement is primarily a change in reporting structure. The creative identity and strengths that make Obsidian distinct will remain at the core of their studio and work. Fergus and the Obsidian leadership team will continue to lead Obsidian with the studio reporting to me. Bethesda Game Studios will continue to lead the Fallout franchise, end quote. Brad, reorganizing, restructuring, putting teams under new teams. We have Jill Braff here, of course, the head of Bethesda, saying, hey, Obsidian will maintain their distinct style. They'll keep their leadership. What do you think of that?

46:14I'll believe it when I see it. I think, I don't know. again it just goes back to teams have like a studio culture is not something that can just sort of be easily folded into another one you know like how bethesda operates and how obsidian operates how you know world's edge operates like those are all distinct and different and they have their own processes and and sort of uh you know collaborations and it just seems that like you know taking obsidian and just saying hey you're kind of reporting to bethesda like you know maybe they could eventually work it out because they're all creatives and they want to make the best game possible but it just seems like it's going to create a lot more obstacles in the long run of you know an already complicated game like a fallout um you know something that big that complex complex yeah of course brad i think a lot of this is wait and see show it to me prove it to me with your actions not just your words of like we'll see in six months a year from now if that changes right but to me this reorganization was a clear and smart move by microsoft xbox and of course Bethesda of like, hey, if you're going to make the next Fallout game, why don't you report straight to the Bethesda team, not report to Matt Booty, who's going to then call this person and then call that person.

47:23We talked about Xbox and the first round of layoffs and Asher saying 19 different levels of management to try to go through. That's a lot of extra sauce to that. But truly and honestly, if you're going to make the next Fallout game, let's get you directly with Bethesda and get you as close as possible. I do like hearing as you say it's just words we'll see that hey we're not going to just start cutting jobs right as greg always brings up with these reorganizations do you need two hr departments do we need a head of the studio when there's already a head of bethesda where does this all kind of lead to and as of right now it seems like the the old school xbox approach of we're just going to let you operate but you're here with us you make the phone call to us directly we will see if that's truly how it goes when we talk about the distinct feel and look of obsidian i don't know about that as of course now they become the fallout team right the distinct world of obsidian lately has been penchment has been avowed has been outer worlds has been grounded has been these wacky small side projects that have found a lot of creativity a lot of love from the audience that were kind of like these smaller underdog stories that were totally different now.

48:36Now you're just making Fallout, right? Like, is that Obsidian? Yeah, a decade plus ago, it was with New Vegas. Obsidian now is still at its core, an awesome RPG maker, but they also have a lot more fun and different titles than just Fallout. So we'll see. I think it's hard to take away from Obsidian. Obsidian will always be distinctly Obsidian, but we'll see where they go. I mean, I love that Grounded 2 is still a thing. They're going to work on that. That's a fun passion project that I give a big thumbs up to in the survival crafting world. Being able to pick up the phone and call Todd directly and work closely with this team for this Fallout game is a very important must thing to do.

49:17We'll see where it goes. I don't think we'll get an avowed or an outer worlds ever again. But maybe I'll be wrong. Maybe they'll stay distinctly obsidian in the years to the future. No, absolutely. I think that's just the biggest takeaway. You know, it's too early to tell because they only just got the mandate to make a new Fallout game. So this is many years away still. So, you know, to see what's going to come out of this. You think it's many years? I think so. Let's talk about it, Brad, because that's the next big move, right? It's like the goal was, because it was many of years for Todd Howard to make it at Bethesda, you bring on Obsidian because you don't want it to be many years.

49:53You want it to be a few years, right? i mean i could that's obviously xbox's hope but i mean i could see you know we hear these stories all the time of you know going into through development issues and development being prolonged and i just think you know like you cut 25 of obsidian and then you make them pivot to fallout because josh sawyer was supposedly working on a fallout like game but like an original ip and then making them you know shift to bethesda and then obviously just morale as well like i I can't imagine how they must feel right now going through all this. So trying to make a big complex game, like a new fallout with all of these circumstances, I just feel like it's, it's going to be a long time.

50:32Yeah. We will see. Only time will tell. They are a very strong and passionate team over there. I wish all of these teams, nothing but the best, but for obsidian, they make some great games and we have given them so much love over the years here inside of kind of funny of like being the workhorse of Xbox and Microsoft. I hope they continue to hold on to that and keep making awesome stuff because that's what they're known for and do. But, of course, changes are big. Brad, if I'm not ready for big changes, what if I just want some small changes in my life? Where would I go seek out some small changes?

51:07You'd go to our last story, the We News channel, where we cover all the small news items you know about. Let's do it. Let's jump into We News, your fifth and final story from Order of the Sinking Star on Twitter. Order of the Sinking Star will be available October 8th for$29.99. We are also happy to be partnering with Edmund McMillan, Billy Basso, and Big Mode Games to bring you special Order of the Sinking Star slash Mugenics and Order of the Sinking Star slash Animal Well bundles. Nice. That's fun as can be right there. Okay. I was like, where are we going with those names? That's where we're going.

51:52We got some fun bundles for you. If you're interested in Order of the Sinking Stars. Brad, are you interested in this game? Not my cup of tea, to be honest. But I'm really vibing with this We Shop Channel theme music. Oh, thank you. This is really catchy. I mean, that's the team over there. They're so talented. It's legally distinct. Legally distinct. Thank you for reminding us that. From Remedy on Blue Sky, for the Control Resident launch, We are deploying a hot fix to address enemy health pools and Dylan's combat strength. Combat is more dynamic. Upgrading is made more straightforward. That's coming from Blue Sky over here.

52:32So you have a hot fix at launch for Control Resonant. So make sure to update that game so you can get the very best out of your experience. Brad, Control Resonant, you didn't bring it up. Are we interested in this one? Oh, very much so. I love Remedy. Just need to get around to it. I like it. I'm in the Remedyverse right now. I kicked off spooky season last night with Alan Wake 2. Oh, hell yeah. Amazing game. So it'll be my first time playing through that. I took a long time on that one. I'm very excited. Spooky vibes. Great start. You're about an hour and a half in. Fun. Great start. I'm excited to see this one through.

53:05It's so good. Yeah, I played Control last year. So I thought, you know what? We'll do Alan Wake 2. We'll let all the jabronis play Control Reson. Then I'll get to it here by the end of the year and have some fun with it. But I am pumped up. I really liked Control. I enjoyed the third-person shooting aspect of it. So we'll see if I like the melee combat of it. Yeah. We'll see about that one. This coming from Wario64. Quake Champions has transitioned from free-to-play to a paid title. Now it's$9.99. Free users who previously played slash added Quake Champions to their Steam account. Get what? free oh not it's now 9.99 free for users who previously paid slash added it to their steam account so if you've already had it guess what you don't have to pay the ten dollars but an interesting one here brad quake champions now going from free to play to paid what do you think about that it's a bold strategy cotton let's see if it pays off yeah this is an interesting one because quake champions should be a game that i'm interested in and want to play it's a game that i saw a long time ago and was like oh i would like to check out quake and i never did and it's a game that i never think of but somehow we've spoke about it over the past year for some reason and i'm like man we're still talking about quick champions this is wild but i think the market is really the video games industry as a whole is trying to move and change with the market as they go whether it be the free to play strategy or a full price title we've seen that many of times How do you deliver all the content to the audience?

54:40Should you just pay$10, get everything, and call it good and play the game? Is it I get out for free so I can get the maximum audience and try to hope that you buy a$5,$2 skin throughout your lifespan? It's an ever-changing and evolving market every single day with all these game developers and publishers on how they want to put out their games. And Quake Champions coming out at$10 right now does make me go, okay, interesting. What are they doing over there? I'd give it a shot. Okay, I like that, Brad. I like that, Brad. Well, that concludes We News. Let's jump into some super chats to end the show and then we'll go into you're wrong.

55:17Of course, Izzy Foshizzy writes in and says thanks for all you do. Keep fighting the good fight. Thank you, Izzy, for supporting us here at Kind of Funny with your super chats. Of course, Brad, where can people find you with all your awesome writing, your fun video game takes, and that Canadian lens into the games industry? Yeah, thank you so much. Yeah, I'm on mobile syrup.com. You can check out all my work there. I have a lot of Canadian game features and interviews that go up there. I'm on blue sky as well. And Instagram, Brad Shankar on both of those. Go follow them. Go check it out. Mobile syrup.

55:53Dot com. Yeah. It's a play on maple syrup. If that wasn't clear. Resolute writes in and says, shout out to wizards. One-on-one never played before 50 hours in on switch to this game rules. Shout out to wizards. One-on-one. You ever play Wizards 101? I have not, actually. Okay, yeah. Wizards 101 reminds me of an era of, like, that Toontown, I think, was the other name. Yeah, yeah. I was playing Neopets and RuneScape as a kid, and I think the next era was that, like, Club Penguin, Wizards 101, you know, that kind of level. And I think that was right when I was, like, probably in the teenage years.

56:31Pre-teens was Neopets, having a great time with that. and RuneScape just missed out on Wizards 101. I remember seeing all the commercials on Nickelodeon and on Cartoon Network, but I think I was too old at that point. I wasn't jumping into Wizards 101. But hey, Resolute says, shout out to the game. Could be good. Not my type. Not my game right now. I'm selling my soul to WoW forever. If you want to find me, I'm playing WoW forever. That's what I'm doing right now. Octavio writes in and says, new marathon vid doc just dropped and a blog post. So if you want to go check out more marathon, get the updates from Bungie, Octavio is saying, Hey, it just dropped.

57:11I'm sure we'll check that out later this afternoon and maybe we'll be reporting on any big news tomorrow. Are you a marathon guy? I'll be honest. It's on the list. I haven't given it a shot yet. I was intrigued by hearing that it was a little more of a sweaty, competitive, you know, extraction shooter type game. So I'm looking forward to giving it a shot. Are you a Destiny guy? Not as much. I mean, I played a lot of Destiny 1, but by the time 2 came out, I was just busy with other things and never got into it. Final Fantasy XIV was kind of my big online game for a while. That's cool, Brad. That's cool.

57:44That's the one I've never played. I mean, if you're a big WoW guy, you've got WoW. I could list off like 10 MMORPGs that I played on Xbox One, but I never played Final Fantasy. Neverwinter, Terra, Black Desert Online. I was playing all those just B-project MMOs on Xbox One going, what am I doing? But I never played Final Fantasy XIV. Tried it. Let's keep it going with

58:12Parker writes in and says, the hair on my neck stands every time his damn song comes on. Talking about Greg, of course. Shout out to Team Orange. And then Resolute also writes in and says, beat it until it's purple and orange. So a lot of team orange love out there for Greg Miller. You're four time champion. Go buy the merch right now. A brand new t-shirt. No better, no better time than to buy a t-shirt that will arrive before probably kind of funny top 100 in your flight out here. And you can wear that at the awesome fun, you know, parade that we're going to have after kind of funny top 100. Wear your, wear your orange science dog official writes in for Mike to feel a little bit better.

58:52Since Blizzard is part of Activision, And maybe those RTS expertise will actually be used over there. Doesn't make it any better, but just a thought. They do get one step closer to Blizzard. Very sure. StarCraft now getting an open world shooter. Didn't say, hey, we're making more RTSs. We somehow gave a 30-hour campaign to Warcraft 3, which is just a wild experience to be living in. We will see what World's Edge does and looks like in the coming months and year. I wish them all the best and I hope that we continue to get dope RTS games and people love and try that genre let's jump into you're wrong we got some fun stuff in here this one from KDG it's not really a you're wrong but it's a celebration so I'll let it slide because I'm Mike not blessing today we know Venba it was made by a best friend who did an extended demo slash making of on PlayStation I love you back in the day.

59:54It's fun. When Brad brought that up, I smiled instantly because, yeah, we know Venva, and Venva rocks. Hell yeah, shout out to Abbey. Yeah, go check that out right there. Let me see. What else do we got? Here's one for you right there. Knight Die Killer writes in and says, the Oakleys in GTA 6 Collector's Edition retail for$214. That might be a good justification for the $400 price tag. hold my hand for a second man the sunglass market got out of hand how did we let those motherfucking plastic 5 cent looking glasses become$241 what have we done you know I used to like sunglasses I used to be big into like I gotta get these cool ass Oakleys and then I started realizing the price tag was$300 I really started questioning what have we done because those right there look like those plastic sunglasses you get at the fair that have the lime green earpieces on the side.

1:00:53And you're like, that's$241. We've lost our minds. Chad, we've lost our minds. Well, it looks like one of the knockoff brands you would see in GTA. Yeah, that's true. That's true. Chad, that does it for all of your wrongs. Kebabs has some missing Wii news for Greg. So I'll leave that in for Greg there, Kebabs. I like that. But Brad, that is the end of the show. a fun kind of funny games daily with you one last time where can everybody find you what's give me one good thing you're looking forward to that you want to share with the world yeah that's a good question um yeah i'm uh on mobilesyrup.com and instagram and blue sky brad shankar uh on both um in terms of what i'm looking forward to uh i mean honestly i'll give a shout out actually the news came out today uh there's a studio in toronto called hilltop uh they made Their first game was little guardsman in 2024.

1:01:48It was sort of like a cute, like, you know, I like little guards. Yeah. I like little guards. Yeah. It was awesome. It was a fun riff on like papers, please. Like a fantasy inspired, like Lucas arts comedy kind of take on that. And their new game curse of rest Haven is a complete opposite swing where it's like a narrative roguelike that deck builder set in like a gothic world. And they actually just announced the release date today for that curse of Rest Haven, October 29th. So that team is awesome. Hilltop, they do amazing stuff in Toronto. They're a wonderful team. And check that game out. Kevin, I just sent you the trailer really quick for Little Guardsman, if we could show that.

1:02:29This team is great. Wow. Thank you for sharing that with me. I'm so excited and sharing that with the world. Thank you. Congratulations to that team. That's awesome. Yeah, I'm a big fan of them. Scott Christian's the head of the studio. He also does the writing and composing and creative direction. and they've done amazing stuff. They work with local Canadian actors to help uplift them as well. So shout out to Scott and Hilltop and play Curse of Rest Haven when it comes out October 29th. Heck yeah, dude.
