2:54what's up and welcome to kind of funny games daily for monday august 17 2026 of course i'm your host tim gettys and i am joined today making her return to the show it's host and creator of gaming decoded andrea renee what's good tim so nice to see you nice to see you andrea it has been way too long i feel like the last time i saw you was wrestlemania not even last year Not even the year before. It must have been like the three years ago one. Maybe I'm wrong. No, I've definitely seen you before then. That was too long ago. It was two years. It's still a long time. How are you doing? I'm doing really well.

3:31It's been a very interesting year in terms of what's happening in the gaming world. And my daughter just started kindergarten. We were talking about what is the passage of time. It's wild. I know. But yeah, it's going well. Thank you. Yeah, that is exciting. You just spent the weekend at D23. I'm very jealous. I did. I've never been to one. That is so tragic. I know. We have to fix that. No D23 and no Star Wars celebration. I'm just like, man, I would have so much fun at these things. But I get it. There's stuff we have to do here. This whole life thing, you know. Yes, it's true. But I feel like the next one, we need to plant the seeds now so that you can come down and experience the magic.

4:16because I mean, it really is like something truly special. And I'm happy to tell a couple anecdotes, but I had some really fun run-ins while I was there. Well, go for it. That's what this is all about, this little rigmarole section of the show. Well, so anybody who knows that I enjoy Disney or has seen my bounding outfits on Instagram knows that Ariel is my girl. Princess Ariel, Little Mermaid under the sea. It's my vibe. Obviously, the red hair is a huge part of that. I've been a huge fan for a long time. I decided for D23, I was like, I don't want to go hard because like they have really amazing cosplayers at D23, like Comic-Con.

4:54So it's like I'm just going to go for a casual bounding look. And for people who aren't familiar with what bounding is, when you go to the Disney parks, you as an adult are not allowed to wear costumes as the favorite characters because they don't want guests, kids, etc. confusing you with the actual cast members who work at Disney. so if you want to dress up like your favorite characters you have to do this thing called bounding which is like you know casual version of what the character wears and i have several of these looks for ariel and so i wore one of them to the show and this producer walked up to me randomly and was like what are you doing in like 45 minutes and i was like uh if i didn't work in video this would have been like a really random weird conversation to just start with somebody but I was like uh what is it he was like well we're doing a surprise video shoot with someone that's part of your world wink wink what and I was like I was like what does that mean I was like hey I'm here I'm here for it let's go and so then I show up where he tells me to meet and it's these people in incredible costumes handmade hoop skirts the wigs full makeup everything and here's me my casual bounding look feeling like very inadequate but I'm like okay I'm just going to be here as the casual girl.

6:07That's fine. And then they have us all face the same direction. And then up from behind walks Jody Benson. That's awesome. Very cool. That is so cool. My God, it reminds me of this one time I was hanging out and I just had a blue shirt on and no pants. And all of a sudden I ended up at this Donald Duck convention and it was, it was insane. And the voice of Donald came out. It was, it was crazy. 6:58doesn't kebabs super chatting in already saying shout out to andrea on kfgd like it's 2017 and science dog official says the busiest lady in the business andrea renee hell yes a lot of love seeing you back here andrea you'll love to see it story i love to be back everybody story number one kingdom hearts d23 blowout confirms anime series release window and more this comes from hayden robinson at bgc uh the first couple stories are all kingdom hearts so we're just going to be here for a while disney has announced an anime series based on the square Enix game series Kingdom Hearts and confirmed a release window for the fourth game.

7:34Announced during a D23 presentation in California on Friday, Disney said the Kingdom Hearts anime series will be coming to Disney Plus and the Disney Channel. The series is being created in collaboration with Tetsuya Nomura and the creative team at Square Enix. According to the announcement, ready for a new adventure? An original Kingdom Hearts anime series inspired by the beloved video game franchise is coming soon. During the same presentation, Disney confirmed that Kingdom Hearts 4 will released in late 2027 and feature a world based on pixar's coco andrea were you in the room during the this whole the entertainment showcase announcement stuff i was not so it's actually very difficult to get tickets to that showcase and i didn't feel like jockeying for them also we had to get back to get to our our daughter but watched it and was incredible and just like the The excitement around Kingdom Hearts is always so fun to watch because I have never been like.

8:32Beat first into that fandom. I've always been kind of like looking from the sides, trying to understand what's going on. And my dear friend Alexa Ray has been very good at explaining a lot of it to me, but very exciting news. Nonetheless, I'll never forget being at the Kingdom Hearts 3 preview event, which was the first time anyone got to play the game, which obviously meant a lot to people that care and grew up to this with the series. And I'll never forget it being like you. And then it was me. And then all the Easy Allies boys. And it was really just you just like looking at like your little brothers, just like you all have fun.

9:06Okay. Have fun. But man, that was that was a long time ago. Here we are talking about Kingdom Hearts 4. I'm sad that you didn't get to be there because like that's the thing of D23 I actually want to be a part of because they put on such a show. I hate that they don't live stream it. I was kind of like watching along with whoever was live streaming on social media until it got taken down, like jumping back and forth. But a lot of fun stuff announced. But, of course, on Friday when we were doing Games Daily, Andy and I were talking about the rumors going into this weekend of what we were going to get from Kingdom Hearts because we knew we had the panel on Friday or on Saturday.

9:40But all of a sudden rumors started we might see something at the actual big D23 showcase. And I was like not fully convinced. I wanted to believe. But the story coming out of Kingdom Hearts being a billion dollar franchise for Disney. Like that puts it on such a different level. And I really like that Kingdom Hearts is finally getting its due alongside all of the other major properties. Like showing this game off alongside the announcement of Coco 2. And having that lead into a essentially surprise of like it looked just like they were playing a scene of Coco 1. but then Heartless show up and people in the crowd are losing their minds.

10:19Like it's so damn impressive. Like the amount of times that we've said like, oh my God, this game looks like a Pixar movie. Like I remember playing Ratchet and Clank one on the PlayStation two and being like, this looks like a Pixar movie. And to be here now and like, look at this and be like, this looks like Coco the movie. Like I've seen side by sides and it's pretty stunning how lacking of difference there is between the two. Like this is absolutely incredible. Are you a Coco girl? Oh, I love Coco. I've seen it dozens and dozens of times. I was very excited about the announcement for the sequel.

10:53And the stuff that they showed within Kingdom Hearts is incredible. I love that they picked this franchise because I think it has such a fantastic setting for a video game. Just the colors and the traversal up and down the Land of the Dead and all of the little individual characters. I'm really excited to see how they're going to bring it to life from a gameplay perspective. which of course we got a few details on the king of at the kingdom hearts panel. Yeah. I mean, even just looking at it here, like this looks, it looks like kingdom hearts, right? But that's exciting. Cause going into kingdom hearts for, there's been a lot of talk of like, maybe we're not going to get as many Disney worlds as in previous games.

11:29And that would make sense from a story perspective, but of where we're at in the games, but I'm happy that that doesn't seem to be the case here, but there is this cool thing where so far it's all dealing with a lot of death, like Coco being the land of the dead uh Sora seeing these like force ghost visions of Donald and Goofy them literally going to Hades in hell to talk to him about trying to get to Sora like that stuff is so perfectly hype of like connecting the Disney properties to where the story is out of Kingdom Hearts and I'm like you know what like they're starting to cook here so yeah very very excited obviously we've talked about Coco a million times I think it is our number one on our overall Pixar list.

12:09And yeah, it is that damn good. And you're right. The colors and the world is going to be so cool. From a game perspective, I also love that we always get the custom keyblades of whatever the world looks like. But normally we get those towards the end of it. This seems like we're getting it to actually use within a lot of the world. I don't know. I'm excited for it. There's a lot of Kingdom Hearts. The rail grinding here, like when that moment popped, everyone was like, oh, it looks so cool. it looks yep perfectly kingdom hearts floaty as hell like some things that never change um but yeah so much cool shit here in the the deeper dive during the panel we saw the extended trailer where we get to see goofy and donald in their coco forms um and then a ton of this mickey mouse stuff of like we're essentially getting epic epic mickey three just like in kingdom hearts hell yeah yeah so i saw this and was like this to me looks like it's taking a little bit from what they did with like epic mickey rebrush and bringing it into the kingdom hearts style of 3d gameplay because mickey has always just kind of been this like narrative figure he's never really figured that much into gameplay is that correct uh it depends on the games but like this is a big deal that in the main line games we're playing as mickey and he has very fluffy furry ears i don't know about the furry ears in this one i know that the ue5 stuff had to go hard but like maybe not that hard well i mean the hair looks incredible yeah yeah uh story 1b tetsuya nomura promises players kingdom hearts 4 will not be delayed kingdom hearts co-creator and series designer nomura has promised fans that kingdom hearts 4 will not be delayed on friday they announced that it was set to be released in late 2027 so that was the first time we got any type of release window on this thing and then during this Nomura who has directed every game in the Kingdom Hearts series promised players who were skeptical of the late 2027 release window that there was no reason to believe this wouldn't be achieved quote we announced that the game would be coming in late 27 and I saw online that some people were saying oh you know maybe the actual release date might still get pushed back I just wanted to set the record straight that's not happening so I do hope that people do look forward to the game coming in 27 a lot of the marketing of the game has only just started and so i do hope that people will also look forward to hearing more news as well andrea what's your take on this it's tough with release dates and i feel like tim i know that we've already talked about 1d23 story but i forgot to do my regular disclaimer of take a shot yes my husband john drake works for the walt disney company um so want to make sure in games yes so if everyone watching forgot or maybe didn't know um yes uh disney is in the family so when it comes to release dates in general i mean i think we're just in an era where we're putting less stock on them because we as a community would prefer the dev team to ship a game that's not broken and if it means they need to slip a little it's better to slip a little than to ship something that's not good right and this has been so anticipated and it looks so great.

15:11I think that the audience for this game would be forgiving, but I mean, they don't have to ship it if it's not ready, but he seemed very confident on stage. So I imagine that they're just in final polish at this point if they're targeting April and hopefully they can stick the landing. I mean, it's going to be a busy Q1, so it's good that they chose April and February. April and February. Wait, what are you talking about for those? Because we're talking about fall. didn't what are you talking with the window didn't he say april 27 on stage no no no fall 27 fall 27 27 yeah yeah no they're not going to be released in near final fantasy seven that would be wild yeah no i i believe this and i i think that they're going to stick to this we're just wrong i apologize everybody the the level of confidence that that he's presenting here doesn't need to do that especially for a franchise that has seen its share of delays has seen a long development time even with this game right like we first saw this i think in 21 and uh you know before that like king march 3 was like such a long time ago that uh inevitably this was going to come and it's kind of crazy that we haven't got another kingdom hearts title even a non-numbered title um since then besides the the music game um so are you surprised by that really though don't think to historically take a really long time in development well for the numbered ones yeah but i'm talking about for the they were pumping out the like there's like nine games in the franchise like and the only three of them have numbers i think that's indicative though of where square enix as a publisher has gone over the last decade really kind of paring back the development costs, let's say, where they don't necessarily see the ROI and instead using those resources to put into their mainline entries.

17:06And I think it's, I mean, I feel like it's worked out. I mean, look at Final Fantasy. It's been doing great. And so hopefully they can, you know, put some of that good juju into what's coming for Kingdom Hearts. Yeah, see, I'm coming from the other perspective of like, I feel like during the last decade is when Square was really bad about it. They were just putting out everything and anything and i am surprised that during that time we didn't get more kingdom hearts lord knows what sequence of letters they're going to put together to have the subtitle there but here we are coming out with kingdom hearts for them not having all of those all eyes at least on this franchise have been towards this i do think it's going to hit and fall and on top of that we've seen you know with the the switch to now being out and what multi-platform looks like for these third parties and with the major success that capcom has had this year with its games coming everywhere and everywhere day one and then square finding so much success on themselves with the relaunches of final fantasy 7 remake and upgrade and uh rebirth uh mainly due to the switch 2 and knowing that this game it being re-revealed at the nintendo directs like i do think there's just a synergy going on of them understanding all right we can get these games out multi-platform day one and there's just like a better understanding of even unreal engine working uh for them and they have more experience over the last at this point decade working with those things so uh i i have faith i think that fall makes sense and i think that it's going to be a killer 2027 for square between kingdom hearts 4 and final fantasy 7 revelation what kind of adoption do you see coming for the collection do you think it's going to bring people in that haven't played or do you think it's going to just be like a nostalgia bump.

18:48Okay, so we don't have the story here as part of this, but we did see today that number one sold game on Steam over the weekend was the Kingdom Hearts older collection, HD 1.5, 2.5 remix. And it's like we always talk about when there's an adaptation that happens on Netflix or a movie or whatever, we get there's that sales bump. But there's an interest and excitement for Kingdom Hearts. And I think that's a lot of old fans coming back, but a lot of new fans coming in and there's never been a better time to play through the kingdom hearts games because they the hd remasters are excellent and they are available everywhere and anywhere they aren't available will be remedied in the next couple months and answer your question i think these games are going to find a completely new life and sell incredibly well on the nintendo switch to when it comes out in october like that is going to be an overwhelming success for the franchise and it's going to make them a lot of money because the games have been on nintendo before but they were the cloud versions and that is not that doesn't follow the ethos of nintendo gamers at all so putting these out having them actually be playable for for people many for the very first time the people that have just been nintendo owners only kingdom hearts is so their shit so they're gonna play this what do you think yeah 100 yeah i think nintendo and disney go hand in hand in terms of audience overlap, right?

20:09They really hit that family core gamer, and what's great about Kingdom Hearts as a franchise, it kind of spreads beyond that and really is like a bridge to the broader action-adventure genre. And I think this just makes sense, that it's going to be there. I think what Nintendo has been doing with their hardware, we've really seen games that, I'm going to be honest, I was skeptical about their performance on Switch games, even like The Witcher 3. um things like that where we've really kind of seen the that hardware pick out better performance than was anticipated now you know i'll let the more tech savvy people debate about the the pixels and the frame rates the refresh rates and all that stuff and you guys are deciding which platform is best for you but having it on the go is always a win in modern life in my book yeah uh then moving on to the sad news here the original kingdom hearts kairi voice actor hayden panettere passes away at 36 this comes from orpheus joshua at noisy pixel varieties reported that actor and voice actor hayden panettere has passed away at 36 in addition to her acting roles in heroes and the scream series kingdom hearts fans would recognize her as the original english voice actor for kairi from kingdom hearts 1 through 2006 panettere's representative said the following to abc regarding her passing quote it is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved hayden she was incredible light and force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all those who knew her and to the millions who watched her on screen uh resolute super chat saying kingdom hearts 4 is actually coming everything surrounding quadratum was my highlight love the story wrapped around those mobile characters r.i.p to the original princess of hearts um obviously this is incredibly sad news and um it is always unfortunate for someone to pass but the timing of this is just extra weird with the kingdom hearts connections of the night before this news um the original voice actors of riku and sora did a dramatic reading of the end of the script of kingdom hearts 2 that is very much focused on her character um live at the panel and it's just you know sometimes life just has those weird little moments come together but incredibly sad yes there's really not much more to say about it other than it's tragic and hopefully people have fond memories of her that they can hold on to you know when they're dealing with their grief yeah everyone go watch scream for the most underrated scream for and her character kirby is the greatest character in scream history i will hear nothing of it i've been saying that forever and i will say it forever um she is she's awesome in it and um she's she was awesome and very special to kingdom hearts as well so um there you go with that we got uh immersion fragrances saying keyblades up for kairi uh science dog we already did that um bender ascend says i feel like kingdom hearts 4 will be done earlier than late 2027 but they don't want to release it near revelation so i believe namura it's been in development since 2020 yeah i'm right there with you like i feel like they this is the type of game you want to get the marketing going and drummed up and everywhere because i do think that they got to the point where it is one of the rare games where the graphic fidelity and art style of it is a selling point to normies out there because you show a normal person i showed gia the trailer for the coco thing not telling her what it was and when kingdom hearts 4 came up she was so confused and when i explained to her i'm like no no no this is the game like this isn't just like a marketing thing like this is what the game is her jaw was literally dropped and i'm like yeah man so it's like i do think that there's like that just that disney magic to it all but the fact that they can all tie it together if they present this i think it's going to be a a great jump on point for so many new fans and again even if it's not kingdom hearts 4 people are getting into like the this re-release of this new collection i think is going to create many new kingdom hearts fans i brought this up earlier at the beginning of the show but But I am so impressed and happy that Kingdom Hearts shared the stage with everything else.

24:14And not just Kingdom Hearts, but Disney games. Like, having the games be presented as if they matter just as much as Camp Rock 3. Like, that means a lot to Disney and to D23 and to how they're presenting that stuff. And, like, Camp Rock is only kind of a joke. Avengers Doomsday, Star Wars Starfighter. Like, it is all of their big stuff that they care about. And saying, hey, we care about video games too. Specifically Kingdom Hearts. It's man, never thought I'd see the day. Yeah. I really hope that there's going to be a standalone big showcase like that for games. I mean, it would make sense at D23 to roll it into the entertainment showcase, of course, because it's like this idea that video games aren't bigger than movies and TV is just a fallacy because they are, there's a lot of data that shows that they are, but there's still a lot of old guard and traditional broadcast and network television and the way that film studios are run that are going kicking and screaming into the new video game future mc platypus says i was a kingdom hearts super fan grew up with it anticipated three with great intensity but three bummed me out in the same way game of thrones finale did to its fans kingdom heart four isn't drawing me back in it feels bad yeah not surprised i know that that's definitely a common take i would say from people but i do think that kingdom hearts 4 is going to be another chance to like go a different slightly different direction um i saw someone in the chat bring up like the kingdom hearts 4 it was craig in the chat saying kingdom hearts 4 could very easily be the devil may cry 5 of the franchise and i actually think that's very apt where you know uh double may cry 4 wasn't that well received either but the people that like it really like it same with kingdom hearts 3 i think that kingdom hearts 4 will have that chance to kind of just like hit for people and it's also story what storyline wise incredibly complex and deep and lore and we're a million things into this but also it's kind of a nice reset point like i think that the story is going to be to an extent and we'll see where nomura starts and ends this um a a good place for like new fans to kind of jump in at least understand oh a bunch of characters are being introduced for the first time it's not like i need to know too much but if you do know all this stuff it'll obviously help you well tim you didn't talk about your feelings about riku coming back oh my god get fucking hyped but like of course that was gonna happen i love that they showed it i think that extended trailer was like pitch perfect and i think that it was like such a good idea to show the condensed cocoa version in the um the big entertainment showcase and then go deeper in the deep dive kingdom hearts panel and all of the they showed the playable goofy mickey and donald stuff was awesome and then yeah building up to that reveal of riku at the end i'm just like they know what they're doing here they know their audience they know how to just give people what the holy shit moments are going to be and then yeah this is going to satiate people the theory youtubers are going to be popping off for months based on just what was given this weekend alone so they i think that they checked every single box and they nailed everything that they were trying to do uh with this one so yeah very very excited for it um and then also the anime coming i think that that's really awesome it not being a direct adaptation of the the games i think is a good call um but it's also a project that i feel versions of it have existed and then ended up not happening many many times whether or not they're officially announced or not so this is one that i'll believe it when i see it because i'm still waiting for sister act three when they announced that at a very similar g23 show so you can't really trust that.

41:25But PlayStation 6, I do think that, I have a fear that we might be too far gone already because of decisions that they have already started making and paths they've already started going down.
