In short

PlayStation Network outage hits during Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls open beta; broader debate over all-digital gaming, PS5 disc shutdown controversy, and digital licensing risk. Also covers Kingdom Come: Salvation EU trademark, Tomb Raider Catalyst delayed to 2028, Marvel’s Wolverine trailer, and Atari/Universal planning 10 live-action movies.

Guests

Mike Drucker (world-renowned comedian; started writing for TV including Nintendo-era work and The Tonight Show; hosts “Shit Arcade” at Scotland’s Edinburgh Fringe with live audience game-mocking). Greg Miller is the other host (not a guest).

Key claims

PSN outages prove all-digital is fragile; players should be able to play offline single-player without hoops (e.g., PS5 “set as primary”); companies prioritize bean counters over fan trust; digital licensing can be revoked/delisted (example: movies removed from libraries).

Notable examples

PSN down prevented digital play; James Bond game connection drops; “Does It Play” accessibility service quote; Kingdom Come: Salvation trademark suggests a new game; Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis set for Feb 12, 2027; Wolverine trailer shows Troy Baker as a character; Atari lists Asteroids, Pong, Missile Command, etc. for Universal movies.

0:46Salvation has been trademarked and tomb Raider catalyst has been delayed to 2028. We'll have all this and more because this is kind of funny games daily.

1:02What's up, everybody? Welcome to Kind of Funny Games Daily for Friday, July 24th, 2026. I'm one of your hosts, Greg Miller, alongside the most famous man in any room he goes into. It's world-renowned comedian, Mike Drucker. Hey, hello. How's it going? It's good, Mike. How are you? I'm very good, thank you. Thank you for having me. Thank you for coming through, Mike. Of course, you're a hard man to book. All right. If you got your start writing on up at noon, maybe you worked in Nintendo before then, but it doesn't count right enough at noon. Go to the tonight show. You go to Samantha B. You're all, you're writing the dice awards for like a decade.

1:40Now you've been killing it, but most importantly, you're going to Scotland, Mike. I am going to Scotland. If any of you are UK kind of funny fans, I am doing my bad video game show shit arcade at fringe from the fifth to the 12th. And then the 23rd to the 31st. Uh, Greg's done it a bunch of times at different comedy festivals. Uh, each show, we have different games. Each show, we have different comedians. So you can come to one show at fringe and the next will be different. Awesome. What is shit arcade? So, uh, basically the way it was created was I've always been a fan of shows like mystery science theater 3000, um, where people make fun of films and I, and I know streamers do that with games, but I really love that audience aspect.

2:18I love a live crowd. I love the way that a crowd can sort of, you know, steer the way you play a game, steer the way. and there there is a you know there is something about a live crowd that's just screaming at you like when a hundred people are in a room screaming at you to jump something it's it's a different feeling uh as as happens with every time i play a garfield game that can't the first level can't be beat and um so yeah it just turned out to be this fun show that i started in la and have been doing around the uh north america for a while so this is my first time actually taking it out of the continent hell yeah that's super super cool how did this come about this seems like quite the throw across the pond.

2:54Honestly, I've been talking to my reps about doing Fringe for a while, and I've always wanted to go out there and do that festival, but I never really quite had the show I wanted to bring. You know, like a lot of people bring their one-person show that's kind of like, you know, here's my 45 minutes of stand-up about my dad dying, and I just didn't have that in me at the moment. And so I was kind of like, you know, why don't I do this show? It's a fun show to do. I could do it in a fun way. It almost works as counter-programming to a lot of the stuff there because it's just sort of like a light, fun game where we make fun of, you know, Shaq Fu and a bunch of terrible other fighting games.

3:27So yeah, it just seemed like a fun idea to do. And then we booked it and we're working with a promotional company called Gilded Balloon. And we're at a cool place called the Gilded Balloon Teviot, which has a bunch of different other shows in it. So it's really exciting. So if you are over in Scotland, aka the UK, why not get over and see Shit Arcade? Where can people go for tickets, Mike? you should google gilded balloon g-i-l-d-e-d-b-a-l-l or b-a-l however you spell balloon oh and it's been a long week and uh shit arcade uh you can you can find tickets on fringe's website but if you buy through gilded balloon we get a better cut of the ticket sales so please do that and um yeah it's only it's only like 10 pounds it's a cheap show uh it's ages 13 and up so bring a kid it is uh super fun i love that for you mike and i love that you're gonna see so many kind of funny best friends there because we love yeah but of course what we really support is there nerdy news you need to know about each and every weekday here on twitch youtube and of course podcast services around the globe uh if you are watching live right now be part of the day's news by super chatting on youtube.com slash kind of funny games as we go of course we can do this without our producers on patreon.com slash kind of funny so thank you carl jacobs omega a buster Delaney the Psalm twining and lax nomad for now let's begin the show with what is and forever will be topic of the show the Roper Report

4:55time for some news six items on the Roper Report oh Baker's dozen I haven't done games daily in a long time topic of the show that was an accident that's games that was 100 % like I've So ingrained from when I've fucked up Gamescast so many times where I say Roper Report. I'm so used now to doing Gamescast because I've been sitting side saddle for this. You know, Blessing's not here to hold my hand anymore. I know what's going on. I was switching everything over so that I could actually bring the topic of the show up. And then it's like, ah, damn it. All right. Number one on the Roper Report. Sony's nightmare month gets worse as PlayStation Network goes down, leaving fans unable to play digital games just weeks after the killing disc.

5:37controversy erupted. This is Tom Phillips at IGN. Sony's PlayStation Network services have been offline for hours today, leaving fans unable to play some digital games. Unsurprisingly, impacted players have been left pointing to the benefits of physical copies just weeks after Sony's bombshell announcement, it will kill PlayStation 5 discs. PlayStation services began to disappear for some users around 8.30 a.m. Eastern this morning, around the same time as an alert from Amazon Web Services that, quote, multiple AWS servers in the US West 2 region were facing connectivity issues. Despite the problem being marked as resolved around an hour later, players report experiencing continued issues in the hours since, and in countries outside of the US too.

6:21The issue has hit PlayStation services just as the open beta for Sony's published and console-exclusive Marvel Tocan Fighting Souls was getting underway, with its developers subsequently acknowledging issues on PS5. At the time of the writing, Sony's own service status page continues to show errors across every PlayStation Network service from playing and purchasing digital content, streaming games, account management services, and more. While outages happen, the timing for this latest interruption of service could not be much worse. As well as impacting Marvel Tocan, a key title for Sony, the disruption comes as a firestorm of controversy over Sony's decision to kill discs is still very much aflame.

7:00This month has seen Sony continually slammed by PlayStation fans for its hugely unpopular decision to discontinue launching new PlayStation 5 games via physical discs from January 2028 onwards. A choice that has sparked an enormous petition, endless social media posts, and a stream of angry commentary on every trailer or live stream that the console maker now hosts. Quote, We had ourselves a lovely PSN outage we see, wrote Gaming Accessibility Service, Does It Play, which champions physical game media. Quote, just one of many things that can go wrong with an all digital future in the way sony shapes up to be uh be careful what you wish for end quote michael drucker yes sir i am so excited to have you and have this news here number one i've lived through a real psn outage everybody all right kind of made my career on the back of that first one back in 2011 24 days so this ain't shit yet don't worry about it and of course maybe it's working maybe it's not your thing but more drunk i haven't had a chance to talk to you about the death of physical games you are allowed to take this from the top from wherever you want where do you want to start you can start with the outage you can start with the games you can start wherever you want to go um i'll start i mean i'll start in the outage and i'll move outward like i mean it says everyone's saying that this is this is the exact proof that like physical games should be a thing and also the ability to just play even digital games offline like i think that's one of the conversations we need to be little better about is also like that I should not need to connect to the internet to play a single player game.

8:31Like I loved, like, look, I, I buy a lot of digital games just because I live in New York city. I don't have a lot of space. And so I don't have a display for games. So any physical games I do own end up going into like a DVD book anyway. Yeah. Um, so like, but the James Bond game, I loved the James, the new James Bond game. I thought it was amazing. I think that dude could just be James Bond. Like, I don't know if we need a different movie, James Bond. Every time my console stopped me mid-scene to say it had dropped a connection that one it had not dropped and two had nothing to do with this single player scenario i was in i i wanted to just shut off the game so you're talking about the in the in-game thing where it wanted you connected yeah like so one i mean i know that's not exactly this side of the conversation but one i think it's all part of the same conversation yeah it's all part of the same conversation like if we're not gonna have physical copies i want to be able to play a single player game offline even if i downloaded it from the internet.

9:24I do not want to connect. I don't want to get a special outfit because I'm always online. I just want to be able to play the game no matter what. That's the first thing. Second thing is like, I understand from the business angle, a lot of people aren't buying physical games. I get, I know the stats. I know that like, you know, compared to how many people buy digital, it's smaller, but you're still getting people buying it. And I honestly think, and maybe you'll, maybe you'll agree. A lot of collectors will buy both. They will buy a physical copy to collect and a digital copy so part of me thinks these companies are kind of like leaving money on the table by not realizing that like there is a lot of people who will buy you know a day one jrpg and then spend 200 to get the limited run game special edition that comes a year and a half later sure yeah tim and andy are like that right where we'll get codes obviously but they're they're going on and tim wants every physical switch to game that he loves so he goes the nintendo store as kind of a rite of passage to buy it physically and have it on a shelf exactly and the thing is like uh you know i don't think a lot of people know that these factories that make these games it's not just like you're burning a cd at home back in the day in like 2002 it's like you need factories that can print these games and make them correctly and so if sony's shutting all these down and those are harder to access we're not going to get those collector's editions exactly you know worse we're going to start getting collector's editions that just give me like a map and a paper craft model and I spent$200.

10:43Oh yeah. And your steel book case with nothing inside it and then your really shitty plastic statue. I hate these guys. The collector's editions are so terrible. I like, I think the one thing I have never wanted in a collector's edition is a steel book. Like I, if I'm going to display it, if I'm going to display it, I want to display the actual box of the game. And if I'm going to collect it, I'm never going to use the steel book. I am never going to use a steel book for anything. You're a thousand percent right. Like you want that at least when I would collect stuff, you wanted it to be uniform and in the line.

11:11I remember, correct me if I'm wrong, chat, but I'm fairly certain that when DC Universe Online did a collector's edition, which was very popular, believe it or not. This isn't me just being myself. It came with a cardboard sleeve for it. And so at IGN, we had our design team make the box for PlayStation 3 that you could then print off and put into a sleeve and have on your shelf there to make it look like that. Because that is a big part of it. you know we've talked so many times over the past few weeks about this and talked ourselves in circles i think you're right that there's definitely the audience that doubles dips on it right it's just the fact that none of these choices are being made anymore with how do we do right by the gamers they're all doing how do we do right by the bean counters and so they're having these conversations of we lose those people but with the month the you know the percentage we gain back of not having to make it ship it have a factory make the disc yada yada is trouncing that number of it which i think is where it is the thing i'd want to bring into this is a super chat that i think is important big curves md says digital games play just fine if your console is set to home slash primary this isn't really the anti-digital game smoking gun people are trying to make it i would argue big curves that of course you are correct your playstation 5 you can go in set it is your primary you don't have to connect to the internet you can play games offline yada yada yada i would use this though as the test case scenario for how complicated all this shit still is where i think every time there's a psn outage or whatever outage there are people who go oh my god i can't play my games it's like well no you could have if you would have when you set up your playstation i still think it pops up and says do you want to make this your primary but people don't understand what that means so they don't do it so then they get into this situation they have to go through the hoops to find it and i think it's such a great i guess medicine counterpoint a chaser to yesterday's xbox story where we're talking about well now you can stream through the cloud but watch ads and i'm like no one is going to jump through the hoops that this would actually benefit yes yeah the kids who are in junior high high school whose parents aren't giving them money for games and they can't get a job or whatever their scenario is they might the hardest of the hardcore but the general gamer the general person the you know xbox trying to convert my friends in missouri these people in india and china who are only on smartphones they're not going to want to jump through all these hoops to go play james bond for an hour and watch four minutes of ads like that's just yeah all part of the thing of this shit is easy to us because we live it and breathe it and just exist in it but mike i think there's such a chasm between us and the market these companies think they can reach yes i no absolutely absolutely and i you know i definitely think you're right like i'm sure in the short run it saves you a ton of money and maybe it should save you a ton of money in the long run but i do think you know going back to doing right by fans it's not just that it's like you know these are the fans that's what you should be doing right by them but i think you know you also want to get those diehard people you want those people that think this company you know like look if imagine if imagine like if you were just starting your Sony career, because you are a massive Sony fanboy.

14:19You've always have been. When I met you, you were already well down that path. And imagine if you started off and it didn't feel like they cared about you that much. Would you have become that fanboy? Would you have become the guy who's so obsessed that you go to every event, that you buy things on a whim, even if you don't know 100 % if you're going to love it? And I kind of think that there's value in fostering those audiences. And sometimes I kind of feel like these companies move themselves further and further back, where it's kind of like, you know, once you start to think of someone as just numbers on a chart, you stop really breeding that really like rabid fan who's willing to always open their wallet for you.

14:52Yes, 1 ,000%, you're right. And I think that's because so many of these corporations and publishers and companies saw the dollar signs in their eyes looking at Fortnite, looking at live service and said, video games can be so much bigger than the core audience we have, that hardcore group we have. And now they're getting a rough dose of reality while you try to retreat to those fans and that audience and honestly try to do what Nintendo does so easily or makes it seem so easy. You're trying to do that. And I think you've already alienated so many people or open their eyes. You know, you bring up the fact that, yeah, my entire career was covering PlayStation and Mike, I play everything on PC now, right?

15:31I play everything on the ROG. I play everything on my razor blade 16. I got it where there's a steam machine. We kick around the office and it's like, yeah, for certain things that I know I never want on the small screen, James Bond's a great example. I knew the entire time I wanted that on a big screen. I got that on PlayStation because I didn't want to hear my razor blade 16 laptop sound like a jet engine trying to run it. Right. But this, you know, everything else I want, I want the ease, the portability. And then, you know, as we talk about as steam continues to do right by its audience, right.

16:00Of like, Hey, here is this library of games here. You play it anywhere you want. Here's this amazing controller. Here's, you know, the system we wanted to be cheaper. It is what it is, but more importantly here, like thousands of sales all the time on all these different games you can go get like i at least feel like they're still you know even though gabe has his yachts in his mansions they still feel like a mom and pop like hey we don't have a board of directors and shareholders sitting on our shoulders saying make more fucking money lay everyone off right i mean which is part of the reason why they don't release as many games as people want is because they don't have to until they feel like it's good enough yeah um which i think is a net positive but you know and the other thing mentioning you know like pc services like good old games i think there would be less drama about the PlayStation thing if there was an easier way to back up your games that that was not just download it to the hard drive or download it to the you know hard drive stick you put into the to the system it feels like you know with Steam with good old games it's much much easier to be like okay I have a giant you know hard drive I put my favorite games on it I have those files I know I have those files than it is to back up a console yeah it's an interesting one because the world's moved so fast in the long run that we're having so many arguments where it's like, you know, when you were making your jump from your SNES to your NES, I'm sorry, from your, well, I guess that would have worked the other way around SNES to N64.

17:24And I guess NES that you see where I'm going with this. You weren't worried with backwards compatibility. One of the reasons that my parents were so, oh yeah, we'll buy you a Genesis for your good report card at first grade was I was a master system kid. And there was the attachment that you could put into the genesis that then let me play all my master system games right and so it's like a very interesting thing that now we are here in this all digital future and now the rules are different and people want different things out of it and more than anything i think you're right in terms of backing it up for me this is a foolish belief and stick with me because i think they've already alienated the audience with this i don't worry so much about being able to back my stuff up on my PS4, my PS3, because I believe that I'll be able to get those games off of the PSN when I need them.

18:09When in reality, we know that's not the case as they're delisting movies and not only delisting them, removing them entirely from your library. You don't have access period. Right. So it's like, yeah, they've in the same way, this article in the story we're doing right now is you haven't earned our trust to go all digital because this is all off. You haven't earned our trust that we're going to be able to go get everything we want. and I actually need. Lucid Dream Super Chat says, Sony is an easy and justifiable target right now, but this should be shining a light on the fact that we need modern laws around digital licensing.

18:40You are correct, Lucid Dream, but the other problem is that the government is shooting American citizens in the street. So like we really, we are fucked on so many levels that like no one's gonna - The list of where we are is low. No one's paying it. This is all well and good. We're a long way away from getting this part solved. so we have to try to solve it on our own and vote with our wallet and do all the things we talk about and that leads me to an interesting question for you mr trucker yes sir you come up and i'm sure you know because you listen to everything we do all the time every second of it yeah constantly in a tired argument i like to bring out when we start talking about how much this hobby costs right we're talking right now obviously man g wilkers we didn't want the steam machine to cost this much but it does a i'm asha charman i'm talking about project helix and this thing is going to be premium and hey playstation 6 how much is this motherfucker going to cost where are you with it because i always talk about not you specifically on this negative part yeah but gamers with a capital g in general we all get so riled up about prices this that the other understandably so but then it comes and we grumble when we buy it and i always talk about like when the playstation 4 pro and the ps5 pro i believe but correct me if i'm wrong when those came around and people like i don't really see the need or whatever like there were still a lot of people and i remember you buy it you're my guy of like if there's new hardware the virtual boy you're fucking buying it like you are getting this shit like is there a ceiling or when you think about did you get a steam machine when you think about helix is there a ceiling how much you buy that would you buy that run me through where we're at right now sure um i what's weird is i actually was early in the queue for a steam machine and actually got the email that was i could buy it and the only reason i didn't was i kind of ran the specs against the gaming laptop i have yeah and you know with the gaming laptop i was like do i want to spend a thousand bucks for something that is slightly worse than my gaming laptop that is sometimes inconvenient to move to my living room but is it a thousand dollars worth of inconvenience to move to my living room so that's the only reason I didn't get one and that's and I also really love my Steam deck um I'd say 90 % of what I play on my Steam deck are indie games and pretty much 90 % of what I'm buying on Steam at the moment are like you know relatively you know indie games yeah and so I was not at the point yet which is also why I haven't upgraded to a bigger PC handheld but it's it was so tempting like it was literally in my cart and I had like the one gig version with the controller like it was in my cart I was entering credit card information and that's when i pulled out so for me maybe a thousand dollars maybe a thousand dollars is my threshold maybe a thousand dollars is where as an adult i'm like that is a lot of money um but but at the same time i do know that like you know and i'm not defending big corporations i know that when people say this it's like they think you're defending them but like we have been paying 1990s prices for you know 2020s hardware for a long time you You know what I mean?

21:43Like these companies have eaten a lot of money on them. There is no world in which like Sony can release a console that costs$500 and not lose$500 on it. And that's not a defense of the companies, but it's also the reality we have to face is that they're not going to give us this hardware at a price we like anymore. And we can make the decision to not buy it like I did with the Steam Deck. But I don't think there's any going back because this isn't like a cultural choice. This is the fact that everything is more expensive. Yeah. Yeah. So then talk to me about Project Helix, the next Xbox. Is there a reality where you're like, I'm buying that day one?

22:22Or are you like, I got to, I don't know. You know what? It depends on what it does and what it runs. Like if it's basically a very hyped up, well-designed, streamlined kind of Windows handheld that gets Windows out of my way, but still gives me the benefits of having Windows, you know, where I can run, you know, like I can sort of with the steam deck with enough futzing where I can run different, you know, services at once. I might just do it. You know, I like Xbox. I'm not, I wouldn't call myself an Xbox guy, but I like Xbox. I like, I have, you know, an Xbox series X that I like for playing all my old Xbox stuff.

22:56Like it's, I know that it sounds dumb to call it my Xbox machine, but it plays stuff all the way back to the original. Yeah, of course. You know, so I am more than willing to give it a chance. I just want to make sure that it's not just, you know, me buying an upgrade to the steam deck. Like I want it to do something that's a little more than current windows handheld PCs are doing. Okay. Okay. Fair enough. Fair enough. Fair enough. And then I know steam deck doesn't run windows, but you get what I'm saying. No, no. I, I mean, when you, now that we've moved into, Hey, project Helix is going to be a premium Xbox that runs the PC.

23:25Well, it's like, okay, so we're talking about your whatever steam deck slash rock ally slash these gaming handhelds are being that what the Xbox experience we're seeing, I'm using on my rock ally X, right. Is what we're going to see on this machine, you whatever this machine actually is and stuff to that effect exactly exactly so so you for you then i guess it would be a similar thing of hey here's project helix it's a console pc hybrid it's you know doing all the stuff but you'd have to see compare it to your gaming laptops and all this other stuff and then see the price there yeah but that's the advantage of going on pc like you were saying playing on pc before is it's a lot you know uh an upgrade isn't always like a generational upgrade like sometimes it's just incremental sometimes it's you know like it's harder to feel FOMO when you're like, okay, this could run it one resolution kick higher than I'm running it now, but do I care enough to see Lego Batman in 4K to do that?

24:15Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know what I mean? And the answer is yes. You gotta see the cloth textures on that cape, man. Come on now. What are we talking about? 89 suits amazing. That was a terrible example, but you know what I mean. No, I liked it. I liked it. It was good. It was good. One final super chat on this front before we move on. Immersion Fragrances says, with the movie thing, has anyone mentioned that Sony clearly knew the date these licenses would end and hid that information until the end I would say that's a good point it's a good point my thought not knowing the ins and outs of this deal was the assumption that I mean everything you're buying as I now see it's hilarious now to check out on Amazon I rent a lot of movies and end up buying movies on Amazon all the time because I just want it right now a digital prime video and like now the block of paragraph text of like you aren't actually buying it's just a license you're renting the license weekend it's like oh i see how this is all gone like i feel like everything has a license on it but i think sony probably you would assume thought that oh well we'll re-up it when the time comes you know that's their hope and thought and what you'd think a digital future would work in the same way i remember when netflix went digital and we're like oh cool everything will be on there all the time it's like no no we're gonna cycle things out like what the fuck are you talking about why would you do that and now we all just accept that story i mean yeah i absolutely agree and i agree that we need better you know uh someone said earlier we need better laws around licensing like you know i i think that yes a lot of people just want digital and i just want digital as well but there's also something to be said of how much more comfortable we'd all feel with digital if we weren't constantly afraid that those licenses were going to be revoked yeah fair enough uh story number two on the roper report kingdom come salvation trademark filed in the eu this is dave aubrey at vgc.news a new kingdom come game could be set for an announcement if a recently filed eu trademark is anything to go by a trademark for kingdom come salvation has appeared on the european union intellectual property office website filed by war host war war host War Horse Studios in check.

26:22A logo has also been included. Under goods and services, we can see the trademark applies to computer gaming software and entertainment services for matching users with computer games. Computer gaming software seemingly indicates that this is a video game and not the upcoming Kingdom Come live action movie. The entertainment services for matching users section may also indicate that the game has online multiplayer as a component, something the two previous Kingdom Come games didn't include. Trademarks for Kingdom Come Deliverance do not include these services. War Horse Studios is currently working on a Lord of the Rings RPG.

26:58Drucker, were you a Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 sicko? I was a Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 purchaser.

27:09I am an owner of Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. I have a grand total of an hour and a half on Steam. No, I really liked it. I think it came at just the wrong time when I was not ready for a new long-term relationship with a game like that. Yeah, fair enough. Fair enough. It looks amazing. And I have no moral. I like I've bought every kingdom come game. I just then I'm like, yeah, I'll get it. You know what it is? It's like when you buy a giant book and you're like, you know what? I'm going to read this giant book at some point. Just not right now. And then you never read that giant book. It's the it's a book.

27:40It's gym equipment. It's what you know what I mean? Like this is, I'm going to, I'm not doing it right now, but I'm going to get to it and it's going to be great when I do it. Yeah. Of course. Yeah. It'll change my life. One of my problems I think with games is that I sometimes have games that I'm like, this game is good for you. Like you should be playing this game because it's good for you. And then because it's good for me, I won't play it. Like I'm like kingdom come, you know, you know, it's, it's definitely like a high end game. It's got a great story. It's interesting. It does things. It would be good for me to play it.

28:07So instead I'm going to play slay the spire two for another five hours. exactly I've been playing a lot of junk food games little indies that thing you know whatever goofy I'm gonna get this is a meaty one I'll sink my teeth and I'll get that yeah it never happens you gotta you do the hour you pop off yeah missing link in the chat goes too bad too bad combat sucks for me that was my turn off to it like I'm not the medieval guy you know I mean if you toss some yeah fantasy stuff in there I'm all about it but like it was like everybody's like Greg you love you know this kind of RPG you love that western RPG like this is your game and I jump in there and it's like, man, I just cannot connect with this combat, which I don't want to then do.

28:41And so it's that thing of on the outside of the glass, like I see it and I respect it and I totally appreciate that it exists and I wish it was for me, but it's just, it doesn't check the boxes that I want to go put in 75 hours into it or whatever. Unlike Mike Howard outside, who of course pandered to the chat and got obsessed with it and played it and had a great time. But I'm like that with Assassin's Creed as well. Like I know it's a good game. I can tell why people like it. I can, I know the differences between, you know, the eras in the series but no matter how many times i try to get into them i just bounce out after an hour or two yeah yeah fair enough fair enough uh we'll see what salvation brings to the table uh interesting that you know already getting trademarked uh with them working on the lord of the rings rpg on top of it now granted it's a capitalizing your success i wonder what it'll be if it'll actually just be that hey we're doing like this smaller project that is a multiplayer battle take the combat that people do uh love and appreciate from kingdom come deliverance to pop it into a multiplayer thing kind of go that way could be interesting could be interesting could be the future could be the future but let me tell you right now mike kind of funny wouldn't have a future without you of course you can pick up a kind of funny membership on patreon.com slash kind of funny youtube.com slash kind of funny games apple and spotify get everything we do ad free get an exclusive show each and every weekday called greg way and of course get good karma for supporting an independent 11 person 11 year old small business but right now you're not using your benefits.

Tomb Raider catalyst delayed to 2028, confirmed by Amazon Boss. This is WIP at IGN. That's Wesley in pool. Tomb Raider Catalyst is indeed delayed to 2028 as many had suspected confirmation comes from Amazon's video game boss Jeffrey Gattis who told the game business that Catalyst is now due out in 2028 with Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis due out February 12th 2027 Legacy of Atlantis comes out February 12th of next year and then will follow on in 2828 with the next one Gattis said no firmer launch window was offered both games were announced at the same time in december last year catalyst is next gen unreal 5 built tomb raider that developer crystal dynamics announced years ago now in december it was set for pc playstation 5 and xbox series x and s in 2027 published by amazon games studio i'll tell you what mike yes sir amazon they sure know how to run games no notes no notes at all on anything amazon games has done since they got going uh i mean the way that like i know we talked about james bond but the way they were like now that this game's a success we will be making sure that we control this franchise from moving forward it's like no don't do that you are taking the wrong fucking lesson pal what are you talking about that was like like what a slam dunk simple question to answer and they fucked it up so bad They had to come back days later, but you know what?

32:51No, we're going to, we're going to work with Iowa. We couldn't, we couldn't do that. I always got to be a part of it. Like, what are you fucking talking about? God. Yeah. They did a great job. Thanks guys. And now you're like, oh boy, this was our last good James Bond game for 30 years. Jack, correct me. So legacy of Atlantis is due out in February. Was that, was that always the case or were they trying to get, were they were trying to get that out this year, right? It was supposed to be this year. And then are they pushing it because of how crazy it is? I'm on a gaming leak sing. You know, here we go.

33:24Gaming leaks and rumors. They're saying I got to go. Now you got to click on this thing. You go there. It's a refreshment page. Legacy. I'm gonna read from Wario 64. Legacy of Atlantis is up for pre-order. You know, February 10th. It doesn't mention. Yeah, it got delayed. Did we have a date date for this year? Or was it just, oh, it's coming this year. It doesn't really matter for the argument or whatever. It makes sense. Of course, if one gets delayed, you delay the other. Interesting. Okay. So it was just this year and then it got pushed. Okay. it's one of those like September is such a bloodbath GTA is coming in November Ocarina is somewhere in the fucking wind God knows when that's like yeah Tomb Raider number I mean the anniversary whatever Legacy of Atlantis the remake whatever getting delayed is for the best interest of that game for sure February of course that spring's already getting crowded but you put it there you'll get some eyes on it and then yeah pushing this one not even further, but man, Chris dynamics.

34:20I feel like can't get a win to save their lives. And again, Amazon, I just don't fucking trust. I feel like they have like crystal dynamics has felt like a company for 35 years where I'm like, where are you guys always falling apart? Like, you know, like when you have a friend that's always on the verge of collapse, but they somehow don't. Yeah. Anthony Carbone always feels like crystal dynamics. Yeah. Yeah. A hundred percent. Yeah. Like Avengers could have been it, man. You know what I mean? If people would have just supported it, they didn't want to listen to me. They didn't want to listen. Now, granted, they lied.

34:47They said they have a new character every month. They didn't have the first character for like five months, but that's beside the point. We all could have supported. We could have been thrown. We could be throwing our shield right now as Captain American having a great time. I had fun with the game. I had fun with it. Damn right. You did. Yeah. I don't know. I wish these games. Well, again, Amazon, I don't trust because Amazon is Amazon. And at some point they're going to say, man, we're making a gajillion billion dollars, but we want to make even more. so why don't we cancel this fucking video game business you know what i mean like yeah get rid of all this get rid of that we'll keep the tomb raider ip and we'll make the movies and tv shows we're doing and whatever but i hope for the best i mean you know like i know that i'm like eternally a nintendo fanboy for a thousand reasons but one thing that i will continue to love about nintendo is nintendo is first and basically only a game company that happens to also now make movies and theme parks but like you know it doesn't have a sales division i mean it It doesn't have like a marketing division in terms of like selling refrigerators.

Read the full transcript

35:46It doesn't have a cloud division. It's not also making TVs that it wants to sell. Yeah. And so, you know, like you're saying, like with Amazon, they could suddenly tomorrow they could be like, this makes zero money. We're cutting all these licenses and we, you know, will either license out the ones we do have and just cancel the ones we're working on. And that sucks. It sucks for everybody. It sucks for fans. It sucks for people working there who leave two year jobs with nothing to show for it. it sucks. Totally, yeah. I mean, ask Xbox, right? As they suffer for all these Microsoft decisions. Like, yeah.

36:19It sucks right now when all these things buy them. Or even Sony. I mean, I know Sony's PlayStation suffers less than Xbox does from corporate decisions, but Sony still has larger corporate concerns that affect, you know, PlayStation. 100%, yeah. Speaking of PlayStation, Mike Way, number four on the Roper Report, Marvel's Wolverine got a new story trailer. Let's live react to it, Drucker. Alright, let's watch and see what they got up their sleeve here. Wolverine and Somniac coming this September. Of course, they had a panel at Comic-Con just yesterday, two days ago. Naomi Kyle hosted. It's crazy.

36:52Our good friend, Naomi Kyle. Our good friend, Naomi Kyle. Cheap, cool, crazy, never forget. Hit it, Kev.

37:02Sorry, one second. I don't know that we've ever done this before. Let's see if it works.

37:09I love it. I love it. Well, I mean, a conversation wouldn't break, Greg. Drucker, let me... I don't make this show, and there was a conversation yesterday on the chat. Was there? Yeah. Can I hear what? Yeah. Perfect. Awesome. Good. We're good, then. Everything's set. Martial nudity hot. Okay, here we go. Logan! It's me! Wait!

38:04I've tried to keep them safe for so long. Fucking stress. In sight, now! I thought you were back. We were back. We're gonna build a future for mutants. That was Troy. That is why you belong here.

38:30Tear the beast. The hand is ready. Most people I see clearly are you.

38:52Just give in!

38:59Remember who you are!

39:08can't let a man rest in peace can you because you know he's dead he dies a lot but they bring him back all right mike trucker what'd you think i like it okay moving on

39:26kevin if you can mute it we'll keep talking yeah like this is a much better trailer and i should say a much better trailer this trailer nails what i want from a wolverine story i think they've shown so much of we've seen the combat obviously we've seen things here and there but giving him a bit of range i like this thing of him saving it's funny because troy baker is definitely behind him in like not this frame but the next frame or the next frame in an upcoming frame and then that makes me think the guy who was talking in the beginning was that troy baker okay and he had an accent and is troy baker xavier did they i don't do we know who troy baker is playing has Did that come out at Comic-Con?

40:05No, it was just actual Troy Baker. That guy right there. That guy right there. That's Troy, 100%. It's just Troy Baker. It's the real, it's Troy Baker as himself. Exactly. That'd be interesting. I know the X-Men, of course, don't exist in this universe, but you do see him running around with Gene Gregg. You do see him running around with the other mutants there, Mystique and whatnot. Yeah. Wolverine continues to be, I think, in my mind, in all the games coming out, overshadowed. because even though Mike, it's a new game from insomniac, I feel like after three spider-mans, I know that this is going to be great.

40:39I know that this is going to nail it and be great. And so it's just like, cool. I'm ready to play it, but I'm not like, Oh my God, I can't wait. I have to get, you know, counting down the days that time about Don Walker. What up? Everybody can't wait for Don Walker. Also, I'll call this out to you. As we know, if you've been following every piece of content we do here for a, I, a joke was made during the first Wolverine state of play trailer where they showed Jean gray. And I thought for sure that that was a Jesse from control. And I had believed it up until a very specific podcast where I was told this trailer, she does not look as much like Jesse from control.

41:12So I stand down again. I'm sorry that I had that screwed up. I didn't know that science dog official says I need information on how the game works. Is this third person action game with levels connected by cut scenes? It's still, it's weird how unclear it is. is it we've seen the fight it is in fact a third person game and they've said it's linear and narrative so yeah it's going to be uncharted insert your favorite linear adventure there i think it's going to be playing look like that and i think that's good but i think part of the appeal for spider-man was like swinging around the city in the open world aspect of it and so i wonder if like some people are missing that excitement because i think a lot of the excitement i remember from all the spider-man games were like look at the new thing you can do to go through the city You can like sail down and it's not, I think that this will be a very different game from Spider-Man.

41:59And I think that there's like a group of friends who fans who are kind of like curious how it's different and in what way before they get excited at it. And I think we're also like a little burnt out on Marvel stuff, just a little bit. Sure. Yeah. That's the thing. I think again, even the MCU movies, I feel like, you know, are a known quantity to some degree, right? It's so hard to wow you in any of these situations. I think that's where Wolverine, it'll be interesting. Cause you're right. half the fun of Spider-Man is just being Spider-Man in open world, New York. I don't think that would work for Wolverine.

42:29So I'm happy there's a linear story, but then it comes down to, okay, then Wolverine is popping his claws and tearing people in half and having his skin blown off and watching it grow back. And it's like, you got to nail that. But yeah, I feel like nailing that even leads you or leaves you with fewer surprises. If that makes sense, then what Spider-Man would, I think again, Spider-Man 2 wasn't nearly as exciting as Spider-Man 1 because Spider-Man 1 was like, oh, we're finally getting the Spider-Man game. Whereas Wolverine is a continuation of that lineage, at least for Insomniac. I need to see costumes.

43:03I need to see all that. Their deluxe edition is giving you different kinds of claws. I ain't about that life. I don't need different claws. I just need new costumes. Thank you very much. But we'll see. But I'm going to get it. Like, I'm looking forward to it. No, no. That will be a... That code comes through. that is a oh man destination i'm excited to boot that up on the tv and be ready to go but yeah i'm not frothing at the mouth for if that makes sense yeah okay good good talk good therapy session good talk good talk good talk uh story number five on the roper report even pong is getting a live action adaptation as atari and universal pictures sign a deal to make 10 movies based on some weird classic games this is a lauren milsey at games radar as the video game adaptation phenomenon grows, Atari and Universal are teaming up to bring 10, parentheses, yes, 10, in parentheses, movies based on classic games to life.

43:55Per Deadline, a movie based on Atari IP is already in the works, with a screenplay penned by Jungle Cruise and Hellboy writers Matt Riley and Carl Hamp. We don't know which Atari game is up first, but we do know that the list includes Asteroids, Adventure, Berserk, Breakout, Centipede, Crystal Castles, Millipede, Missile Command, pong and yara's revenge quote more than five decades atari has created games in worlds that have remained part of popular culture long after the original release atari ceo wade rosen told deadline quote we are excited to work with universal and entertainment 360 to bring the spirit of our iconic brand and games to a new medium now a few things for people who don't work in Hollywood.

44:43Thank you. Thank you. One, a lot of those articles you see where it's like, hey, they're making an adaptation of, you know, Robotron 2084 often means that they're talking about it. So it doesn't mean that it's been sold. It doesn't necessarily mean that it's in production. It could mean it's sold, but not in production. It could mean it's so a lot of time, like, but it's important to remember that when they're like, we're making 10 movies based on these 10 video games, it's really probably we have a whiteboard with a list of these 10 movies and a list of names we have offers out to on writing it, possibly on spec.

45:20So that might... I'm sure that they want to make those movies. I just don't know how many of those movies will ever be made. Yeah. The way you would do a Pong movie... We're not getting to a Crystal Castles movie. We're not getting to a Crystal Castles movie. Give me your Pong pitch. I'm sorry. Oh, yeah. Pong pitch is just the making of it. The making of Pong is far more interesting than the game Pong. The making of Pong, the story about the guys putting it in the bar, the bar owner calling them to complain that it broke. The reason it broke was it was so full of quarters that it could no longer function.

45:52There's so much rise and fall drama in the actual creation of Pong. That is the Pong movie you want to make. If you make a Pong movie that's like an eSports Challengers, where it's kind of like, I don't know what you do, but the making of Pong should be the movie. Yeah. A hundred percent similar to the Tetris movie, right? Like that was a really cool, like, Hey, look at how this happened and here you go. And he's got the game boy. Yeah. I don't know, man. It's like any of this stuff and they're like, it's so impossible. I mean, I don't, I'm not knocking Lauren's writing here, but like as the video game adaptation phenomenon grows, it's like, how long have I heard about these, these deals being signed where no movie ever comes out of it?

46:33Like I would say this has been going on quite some time, but then you had to jump in. Like I immediately picture battleship. Like I just, you know, Rihanna out there doing this, a movie no one goes and sees where it's like, yeah, we're ponging it back and forth doing this, you know, like pixels probably had better integration of these IP than like any of these things would, I guess. Asteroids. It's like, what are we like, what are we doing? Like we needed, we needed, you didn't, you didn't need it. Like you didn't, you don't need the license to make an asteroids movie, you know? Also like the movie war games with Matthew Broderick is basically missile command the movie.

47:07Yep. Yep. Yep. Yep. You're right there. you're right there good luck i guess we wish you well atari yeah and you know it's possible you know maybe you know uh they they find the right story and they do it right you know because on the flip side i will say the good faith argument is these arcade games are so wide open that there is a lot of possibility with them yeah on the flip on the other hand of that flip side you do end up getting the battleships which is a very wide open property you could do a lot with and you do an alien invasion movie. Talk to me about this. You are in Hollywood. You're a writer.

47:39You've written a bunch of stuff. If you saw this and like, let's say you were interested, what do you do? Hit up your agent to then go talk to these people. Yeah. You know, like if I'll hit up my agent, my managers, and I'll be like, Hey, I'm interested in pitching on this, or I'm interested in talking to them. And I've done that. Like I've met with, I've met with Warner brothers and talked about maybe pitching on some of their old arcade catalog because they you know because they own midway that owns williams and so they have this massive massive backlog of ip so yeah it's definitely something um a lot of the time with these they're like looking for something specific or they're kind of like planting the story to try to make it seem more important and therefore trying to like connect talent with it first sure but yeah i'm definitely asked to pitch on stuff and i've definitely uh pitched on stuff and almost sold it but video game ips are tricky video games the other tricky thing about video game IPs is that these companies, they will send you a long list of docs and not just video game companies.

48:34Mattel will do it. Hasbro. Like they have all these, you know, toy brands and they have a doc of, um, what they own and what they are looking to make something on or like what some, what they already have something in process for. So they're not looking for pitches and you'll pitch on it. But often you run into this weird situation where it's, we want something that's new because we are, you know, an IP that's less known because then we can build a new franchise. Sure. Like if suddenly imagine if they did crystal crystal castles and it became this massive Netflix franchise for kids. You just you sort of have a brand new IP that you actually fully own already.

49:10On the flip side, you get this argument when you're pitching, which is like, well, who the hell knows what crystal castles is? Why would we make something based on this? Yeah. And so it's a real catch 22. That's really hard to get past. Go make go pitch crystal castles. We got it. You and me can come up with something. I should. I should. I have been, I have been writing like an idea for Tapper, the old arcade game Tapper. Yeah. And so I'm kind of, and I'm just doing it on spec for fun, but part of me is like, maybe this will turn into something. That'd be cool. Now, speaking of cool cozy bear live writes in with a super chat and says, Mike, what's your pitch for the kid Icarus movie?

49:46Cause you wrote a kid Icarus game. Remember you translated. I was, I was the English language writer, which really ended up being the English language joke writer because on In that game, Sakurai was very, very generous to insist that every language write new jokes that fit within the spirit of what the joke was, but to not one-to-one translate his jokes because he knew they wouldn't work. Sakurai, awesome dude. I don't know what my pitch would be. That's such a complicated weirdo game.

50:17Like, honestly, I would just make it an eggplant wizard movie. Like, that's my problem is I would just want to write all about eggplant wizard. just like a weird eggplant looking dude who turns other people into eggplants. That's all I would focus on. I genuinely don't know. Cause it's such a bat shit series that does so many things, which makes it an amazing video game to write jokes for, but I can't imagine a two hour movie out of it. You know, it could be a cartoon. I could see it as a TV show. If it was like Greek adventure of the week, I could see that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. All right. Good pitch.

50:50Sasquatch only super chats and says, I'm a dumb sucker. Idiot. I would go see that crystal castles movie. That bear was the homie and I am but a victim of nostalgia. I'm like the flood. Crystal Castles, Demon Hunters. Oh, there you go. There you go. You put Demon Hunters on anything now. You're making money. Mike, you writing the Crystal Castles movie or the Kid Icarus movie would be big news. But if I wanted something smaller, say the tiniest news I need to know about, where would I go? To Kind of Funny? Yeah, I didn't prep you for this. Sorry. on the docu. You say, just say the Wii news, say the Wii news.

51:25The Wii news, the Wii news. That's right. Number six is our last story of the Wii news channel where we cover all the small news items you need to know about. They can't afford you. We love some very good terms, but it's kind of like when you leave a family, they're kind of like, you've left the family. We still love you, but you're no longer part of the family. You're doing your thing now, all right? You go do your thing. We're going to do our thing over here. Everybody's going to be fine.
