Today in the nerdy news you need to know about, Resident Evil reviews are in. Why Fable has been safe from Microsoft and another high-profile departure from IGN. We'll have all this in more because this is Kind of Funny Games Daily.
0:40what's up everybody welcome to kind of funny games daily for wednesday september 16th 20 26 five days until poe's birthday oh it's one of those you know how it doesn't always click yeah i do the date and greg way but i don't think about it and then i saw it i was like wait did i miss it no it's coming up still are you getting him a present no i do enough for this fucking kid Well, you just text him, happy birthday, that's it? Pretty much, yeah. I've sent him codes once in a while, you know what I mean? Is it a birthday gift or just as a favor? Just as a, you know, here's something about it. We're waiting for his birthday.
1:11It's a special day. He's turning 43? Four, he's older. 44? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You're 43. I'm 43. Wow. Or as Ben says, 40p. Oh, that's funny. Because when I was 42, it was for the poop. That's really funny. Maybe toop, maybe whatever. It was some of the poop thing. I'm Greg Miller alongside Bicep Poppy. Blessing, Eddie O 'Yake Jr. Good day, Greg. Hey, how are you? Not well. Fire Emblem. It's getting fantastic reviews. And I think I had resolved that I probably wasn't going to get to it because it's such a big haul. And there's so many big weighty games. You're still making your way through Dawnwalker.
1:49Of course, yeah. I'm halfway through Dawnwalker, a game that I booted up more than once. I'm playing many hours into a redacted. Witcher 3 is coming out in a couple weeks. We got to talk about that, by the way. because in the second half of October, firstly, it's top 100 week is in the middle of that. And so I don't know if we're going to have an episode or not. I think that week you and I are going to be sick and have to do it from home. I like that. I like that. And then the week after, I am on vacation for like a full week. Well, as you remember, the kind of funny Witcher cast for Witcher Wednesdays.
2:23That's half of the month, by the way. I feel like Witcher Wednesdays probably start with a Witcher Tuesday in September because that'll probably, that's when it comes out and I imagine review embargo will be on there. We do not have it, I am guessing. Yeah. So I think that would happen. You think we're going to get it? I assume we're not even going to get it. I think you will. I think they want people talking about. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. If it was a, if they weren't putting out its own skew, if it was, hey, it's a free update, then I think, oh, well, no, we're not going to get it. But it's like, you can go buy The Witcher remaster, remake, whatever the fucking time it is, right?
2:57So there's going to be a standalone thing, which means they'd have to generate keys for it. Okay. Anyways, though, my thing is, don't stress. Witcher cast in Witcher Wednesdays throughout October, as Tim knows is happening. First off, we're taking top 100 a week off. We're not going to, we don't have to work on that. Unless we're on a pre-record, but we don't want to do that. Don't do that to me, please. We're not going to do that to Barrett. Maybe we just have Barrett do it by himself. He's an angel. He can do anything. Witcher, do what by himself? Top 100. I've lost the track. Anyway, it doesn't matter.
3:27no episode on that week right and then remember it's not this is just what we are doing in the game what we've done what i want to try to get voice actors on i want to try to get cd project this doesn't have to be all on our we get other guests in the industry it's like a borderland show except it's not sponsored unless they want to but yeah i mean yeah basically that's fun okay having a themed thing where we can and is it just an october thing can we extend this into november i know in november we get into i assume the views are going to be so good the views will be so good on us doing consistent content about one game, this will become the channel.
3:56Perfect. Especially a game that's not Zelda or GTA 6. Don't worry about it. I'm sure the audience is going to want more than four episodes. That's why I think we leave it to October. Then it becomes GTA cast. Zelda cast for a day. We'll be fine. I want a temperature check. Neither of us are beating The Witcher 3 by the end of October, right? I don't see how that's possible. Bear, give me a Google chat. Google. Once Final Fantasy Resonance out because that's an October game as well. My plan is I want to review Resonance and so I'll be playing that primarily but I still will be then tinkering with Witcher as I go.
4:37October 22nd. See that's on top of me in there as well. Is this a normal? Is this a reasonable JRPG or is it an Octopath Traveler it's 88 hours in here. That's me with Castlevania Belmont's Curse. because that's a game that I really want to get into. And I'm like, how long is that going to be? And then also Phantom Blade Zero. I want the Witcher cast to be a celebration of the Witcher. Okay. And us giving it a real shake and a real shot and playing a couple quests, you know what I mean? Or whatever we need to. I plan, my goal this playthrough is to find Dandelion. Can't believe you never found it.
5:07As long as I find Dandelion, I've succeeded. So. Fair enough. I'm excited. Good. I'm not excited that Fire Emblem is incredible. Fire Emblem Review is up next. Kind of funny games cast, of course. Don't worry about it. We've had top men on it. Top men. Snow Mike, Mike, Barrett. bear did the reviews today surprise you or were they what you expected i'll hold my thoughts for the no i love what he says that i'm very excited for this one um shit yeah hey you can't play all the amazing games how how's the star wars z company going or zcom going for you man you still doing one one mission a night no because there's another game that i'm playing where i'm like if i want to finish this game by review i have to just play this game balls to wall pedal yeah yeah yeah it's like we don't i don't like it won't say anything actually i don't want to give anything but man i like that games that nowadays just have a lot of content they do they just go on and on a lot of them are trying to justify that 70 price tag and it's not all of them i know people are mad at wolverine for being 12 hours or whatever that's not my problem when i hear about wolverine like for me it's like oh damn like i want the gameplay to be good i want the story to be fantastic i'm okay with the 12 hour part and i know people get mad because like i get codes i understand that it costs you how much all that different stuff yeah but i think for me i look at the wealth of experiences there are to have not only in video games but in life you know what i mean it's like maybe movies movies like resident evil resident evil i'll talk about it man i love a two a two hour movie an hour and a half movie a three hour movie because i can get through them i know yeah totally video games video games fire and i like that i don't know if i'll beat that game do you feel like you need to though fire him could you get in play 15 hours and have fun and be like okay well i can i'm pulled away by something else i can go do it no because i think that causes a domino effect of that happening with every game i think i've i've learned this fall this fall my goal is to pick the right games to play so i'm seeing through them like on amusha i felt part way through that game i felt like i was pretty much done with it but i was like no i want to beat it one because i think people like it more when you finish games to review them for sure yeah um and then also it's like if i just start doing that i think i'm doing that for every game and i'm not finishing anything so fair enough i'm trying to pick smarter how are you feeling right now 2026 it's september are you feeling like you're on top of the games you need to be on top of or is there stuff hanging over you like oh fuck i gotta get back to uh so far i think i'm good there are a few games that i have on my backlog that who knows if i'll get get to them but i'm trying to keep it tight and so i have esoteric ebb on there and i'm thinking that might either be a travel or a christmas game potentially i have dench attack on there which i've already played quite a bit of and i want to give it one more good sit down i'm not as into it as like barrett and tim and them um but i like it a lot but i'm not like oh this is game of the year i gotta see this through sort of thing um and then i have like i think one i think z-con was on the list and so i'm doing a good job of keeping up with past games it's the games that are coming up that i'm a little bit nervous about but yeah i really start hitting i made i made a strong list of these are the games that I really want to play and I think I can get through them okay fair enough yeah I'm feeling good right now like I think Star Wars Zcom is the one where I'm like but that's not like that's still in our world recent where it's like okay I'm not that far behind on that one but the fact that I made it back to Pragmata I guess I still haven't rolled credits on replaced I do need to do that but I don't think I have to worry about that like game of the year wise top five in it you know I mean top ten definitely has a shot at I have to sit down and finish it and think about it really but yeah do you think it'll be on other people's top 10 does that influence it'll be on simies no it doesn't trust me i keep thinking about on the drive to work top 100 did you know top 100 is a month away yeah outrageous yeah but i keep thinking about it of like when we go and like where was that on everybody's list i'm like am i gonna have the least games on the top 100 because i just went very much with the games that defined me which i don't expect that be on everybody's list right but then i have a feeling it's gonna be a lot of like at number 75 it's title x and I'm talking and everybody's talking and then it's just like, I'm having my list.
9:11I can tell you why this game's great and why I love that game, but it just isn't one of my things. Who do you think is going to have the least games on the top 100 list? Me or Mike, probably. Yeah, that'd be my guess. See, I was thinking me. Yeah. I mean, it's one of those, it's like, it'll be interesting to have a conversation when we're there about how we all built our list and why we built our list. But I think the fact that if I have, this wouldn't be the case, but if I have two games on the list, I'm still going to be yapping about 90 games on that list and I think it's because like obviously I have a touchstone for all of them otherwise why the fuck am I on this panel let me go home yeah let me play video games let me play Witcher let me play Witcher 3 podcast we're there for everybody if you're watching live right now you can be part of this show by super chatting on youtube.com slash kinda funny games remember we couldn't do this without our Patreon producers so thank you one and all on patreon.com slash kinda funny but especially Omega Buster the landing of the psalm twining and Michael Pesavento or Pezzavento.
10:05I got it, Michael. For now, let's begin the show with what is and forever will be the Roper Report. Time for some news! Six items on the Roper Report! Baker! Good job, Barrett. We start with number one, Resident Evil Movie Review Roundup. Hold on to your hats, everybody. on Rotten Tomatoes a 98 % on Metacritic an 80. Tom Jordanson
10:42you're over there. It's got the J. Jorgensen. That's what I would go with. Thank you. At IGN gave it an 8 out of 10. Resident Evil gets an 8 from me. Okay, well that was redundant. I usually wouldn't start it that way, Tom. With a laser focus on putting its hero through the worst night of his life, Resident Evil is a simple and exciting survival horror story that benefits greatly from Zach Krager's sensibilities. Austin Abrams is exceeding the charm he is the woefully outmatched medical courier Brian, and as he's dragged through a hellish cautery of well-realized mutants and monsters by Krager, whose good eye for creature effects, mounting dread, and signature humor all leave Resident Evil feeling very well represented.
11:25Clarissi Lowry over at The Independent gave it four out of five. The director of Weapons has made a movie that's incredibly faithful to the blockbuster video games that inspired it, yet which features enough bloody elegance to satisfy non-gamers. And then Harry Stainer over at Epic gave it 3 out of 5 stars. More than clears the parentheses fairly low bar as the best Resident Evil movie yet. While its rollicking first act matches the promise of weapons or barbarian, its surprise-free narrative stops it short of ascending to those heights. but horror fans will happily gobble up this tight bloody 90 minute thrill ride blessing greg we don't have to read from people because you went and saw this movie i did go and i assume the embargo's up if all these things are yes okay great how what did you think of resident evil i had a fantastic time i love this movie yeah at some point i want to watch it again um it's i would say it's probably one of my favorite video game adaptations oh yeah i'm surprised with how much i enjoyed it zach crager of course is a great director he did barbarian which i also really loved now i gotta go see weapons you didn't see weapons i didn't see oh man weapons is great yeah so now i'm like i gotta go see that anything about weapons no i don't know anything about stay away just jump into it just jump right in i i think people might end up being mixed at least like video game nerds so here's what i want let me ask questions before we start answering because i look intelligent okay you say it might be your favorite video game movie yes how video game is extremely it's it's i i'll tell roger right before this it if you're somebody who loves resident evil and is looking for this movie to feel like a resident evil game in terms of character references lower references all that stuff you might be quite a bit disappointed however if you're looking for resident evil references as far as gameplay as far as i i told roger that watching this movie felt like watching a let's play it felt like watching what what does that mean it felt like watching somebody play resident evil blind who's never played okay evil okay the god don't do that you're making the wrong choice pick up the herb the main character is like getting into scenarios wasting your ribbons he's doing things where i'm like oh man i know i know what this is like don't do that like don't waste your bullets don't do xyz thing yeah like i don't want to ruin any of like the things that i that i think anybody else would consider non spoilerish because they're just things that happen that don't determine story anything I don't want to spoil those things because I feel like there are so many decisions made to make your video game go or video game brain go.
13:55Ah, that's clever. Like, oh, I've been in that scenario as I played a video game before, specifically a Resident Evil game before. OK, and I think that's something that really makes this special as a video game adaptation. The other thing that I think might be divisive as well is that this movie is extremely funny. Oh, yeah. I found myself laughing a lot on purpose, on purpose. the main character whoever i don't i don't think i've seen this guy before but the lead role he's been in stuff i've seen him can you tell me what he's been i'm on it he's awesome his performance is so good and he's in like his humor the way he presents it like i found myself laughing at so many of his um one-liners and reactions to things he was so entertaining to watch from beginning to end and i say that's going to be divisive because he's not he doesn't feel like a resident evil protagonist austin abrams known for weapons no wonder you don't know him i was like i know that i've seen this chat is also saying he's from euphoria wait really who's in euphoria i've seen euphoria um but yeah so many of those moments made me laugh but yeah he does he's not a um joe valentine he's not a leon like he's not somebody who typically would be the lead of a resident evil he's just a funny guy it was this little guy in in euphoria who was dating the girl who was doing all the OnlyFans stuff before Sidney Sweeney's OnlyFans stuff.
15:16Oh, wait, she was doing OnlyFans stuff? Wasn't she? Yeah, she was doing, I'm thinking of the right one, right, where she was doing like cam girl stuff in her bedroom. Oh, maybe. In season one. It's season one. I kind of wrote her out, if I'm right. She got in a fight. Yeah, she's not in the latest season. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But yeah, I think fans might be a little bit put off by him not being that traditional Ari protagonist. However, I think he made this movie extremely entertaining. God damn, okay. I like that a lot. I like that a lot. Okay. Yeah. This is also my first Resident Evil movie I've never watched any of the other Resident Evil movies I don't know if I can after watching this It's time for you to come when we restart Resident Evil in review You can come back Dude I'll come through We'll redo Resident Evil 1 in review So you can come be a part of that I'm so curious on how the other movies tackle it Because this feels This very much feels like Throughout everything you know about I don't even want to name drop things There are certain references where it's like Oh okay I know what that is oh okay this is what's happening right but i you would think that this takes place in an alternate resident evil universe but it doesn't like it you there it's very clearly resident evil okay but totally it it plays with it in a way that i thought was just very fun and entertaining well you've inspired me blessing you know how much jen and i love horror movies like i've been watching this i'd contemplated trying to get out to the screener last night but it is tuesday's tennis nights now.
16:38We take tennis lessons. Tennis? Tennis lessons. Wow. I'm out there doing the forehand. I bought a tennis racket, some tennis balls, and never used them. Yeah. So if you want to play tennis sometime, you'll holler at me. Sure, anytime. Yeah, you don't want to win that. I'm going to get a date night together for this. We'll get a babysitter. We'll get out there. We'll go see this one. Not you and me. Me and Ken. Unless you want to come to be the babysitter. I thought you were talking about tennis. I was like, oh yeah, babysitter for tennis? Let's go. I mean, yeah, we can do that too i can take a work day off or something i don't know why that we have a whole week off in october uh-huh sick don't do that still playing witcher really funny i'll play some witcher then go out for tennis what about the other guys are doing right now oh my god i'm excited that's awesome that that one actually is being good you know you never know you never know what you're getting with a horror movie slash uh video game adaptation and zach craigert knows how to make a horror movie like he knows how to make one he knows how to do body horror shit which this movie has a lot of body horror shit yeah obviously it's resident evil um but also the pacing of it is really good those unexpected things of okay i know how a horror movie goes and so when you don't see a bad character that means they're probably right here and he's gonna be looking this direction they're probably gonna come from this direction yeah they play with that so well you could tell that this is somebody who has been doing this for quite a few projects and knows how to place the pieces in ways that are going to surprise you no matter no matter how strongly you think you know something's gonna happen yeah it's like there's a third piece in play that you weren't thinking of and they're gonna come from this direction instead of this direction i love that uh jb jb cool in the super chat says true resident evil fans are in shambles 98 98 % rot to mit tomatoes yeah they were they were rebelling against this yes the internet was mad about this for a while oh no i think he's joking the fact that like resident evil movies are never that good right ah okay okay okay because i saw an article i mean no mila jovovich no bye that was my initial thought you know what i mean i saw there was a article i've lost the website but it was comparing all of the oh here it is from forbes they're comparing all the resident evil rotten tomatoes and when you work your way up right apocalypse from 04 has an 18 on rotten tomatoes afterlife has 24 extinction has 24 retribution has 28 welcome to raccoon city has 30 resident evil from 2002 has 36 the resident will the final chapter has 37 and then you jump to resident evil 2026 which is now sitting at a 96 it went down two percent since the start of this oh my god it's finally happening it's all catching up uh let's move on to story number two can i answer this quick super chat from not calvin perez because it's related sure yes i'm sorry i missed it uh blessed trying to see if my girlfriend can see resident evil she's squeamish with igor can i get a yes slash no i believe it's pronounced igor ah that's good that's good here's the thing for the
19:22One or two eye things. I don't know if I'll describe it as gore, but it is weird eye stuff. So like dead space to why stuff or no, not dead space. Cause that's basically that's like the drilling into what I kind of think. No, it's not, you're not getting eyes. Aren't getting penetrated is what I'll say, but there is weird eyes are penetrating people.
19:48Story. Number two, Microsoft hasn't marched Fable into the guillotine because it's, quote, vital to the DNA of Xbox, says the games director. This is Joshua Wolins over at PC Gamer. Microsoft, at this point, drips gore from head to toe. The Megacorp has made a hobby of shuttering studios and laying off thousands of devs in attempt after attempt to write the listing ship of its games business. No luck yet on that front. Jesus, that's an awesome editorialization. you might wonder how Playground's upcoming Fable reboot in the works for a decade now has evaded its parent company's reign of terror in a chat with The Guardian Playground co-founder and Fable's director Ralph Fulton offered up a pretty simple explanation Fable's just that important quote I genuinely think Fable is an important game what has protected us over a long development cycle is that so many people within Xbox view Fable as vital to the DNA of the platform end quote that is to say Fable is a potent Xbox brand like Halo or Gears of War and that's protected it from the chop.
20:51It fills the pattern of Microsoft's studios closures. Though at the end of studios like Arcane Austin, rest in peace, Tango Gameworks, before it was picked up by Krafton, and others felt brutal, they didn't strike at the heart of the amorphous thing you might call the Xbox brand. It did not claim the life of any character you might see plastered on a banner or standee at a Microsoft gamescom booth fulton mind you doesn't just think fable's important starts and stops of xbox quote i would go a step further and say it's important to video games as a whole it offers a combination of elements that simply doesn't exist anywhere else end quote do you believe fable is key there is one of the i guess core components of the heart of xbox so it's a tough one because i don't i can't wait for fable fable looks like it could easily be my game of the year next year everything is amazing about fable yeah and i don't have anything against ralph fulton here and i don't and i i i'm glad he believes this i fully believe it has nothing to do with how important fable is as a brand it has to do with how close they are to the finish line and how much money's been invested in this game and sure how quality the game appears to be if fable comes out and shits the bed next year if you're done son like that part of playground is laid off and it's just worry about Forza Horizon like you know what I mean like that's I wish we were existing in a world where these companies understood the power of their people of course more than anything but also the power of their brands that fable is so important to Xbox the reason it's been able to escape all the chopping blocks is because it's just that fucking it's not no it's escaped it because it's far enough along that it's close to making a profit Asha knows they need exclusives and they need money.
22:38They need games. I shouldn't even go that far. They need games. So of course they want to get this one out the door. And again, it looks great. So yes, these are all lining up. Whereas, you know, whatever's been going on at all the other studios we're seeing shuttered are, you did not make money on your last game. This is in its infancy. So let's get rid of it here. Or this isn't a good game. I would assume. I 100 % agree. As far as like, yeah, you made it this far in fable. The game, people are excited about the game. Me and you're excited about the game. I do think that a little bit to this point though, your platform and this goes for any platform right nintendo playstation xbox you need foundational ip and brands to be healthy in order for it for you to stand any sort of chance um and i think the chance of it being fable here feels pretty good right like i guess us xbox has had so many else in regards to what you would call their core thing which is halo and i think like the lack of health to halo kind of contributes a little bit to the lack of health of xbox yeah um i think having being able to go but at least we have fable and gears and forza is healthy ip brands within at the very least helps repel you forward if you're trying to make a comeback like that does that make sense yeah 100 yeah i mean i think that's the thing xbox currently as a brand i would say I shouldn't say like this is like I'm putting the singular thing they struggle with.
24:04But one of their struggles is that I don't think they have a marquee character to stand out there and be Master Chief. Like Master Chief, like to your point, used to fucking start and stop the world with a new game. And that just hasn't happened in a long time. Even, you know, Halo Infinite, whatever you want to say, post launch. And it had a successful launch in terms of people caring. but it still didn't take it back to that place where master chief mattered to everyone. And I don't, I don't know. We're in a fractured society. You know, the, the, the days of everyone caring about one thing are gone, but it's like, even with fable to a degree, like you think of like, all right, we're going to put a Forza car in front of the Xbox, you know what I mean?
24:46Like where, and to jump to PlayStation Kratos uncharted, you know, you know, Nathan Drake, like, and again, Again, I'm not saying these people are necessarily the biggest characters in gaming, but you look at them and you know their name and you know what they are and you're excited about their title. Whereas a car next to the Xbox brand or a State of Decay Zombie or the Fable hero that we get to make. It's like there's an identity that Xbox is still looking for in terms of like this is what matters. And I do, even as somebody's excited about Fable, wonder if Fable can possibly do numbers that would make Xbox go, wow, we've done it.
25:24You know what I mean? Like, what is Asha slash Sati Nadella looking for out of this title? And is it going to, like, it is a very nerdy looking RPG, which like, yeah, those, I mean, we can talk about The Witcher, we can talk about Cyberpunk, we can talk about games on our CD Projekt Red probably, but like, you can talk about these games that are nerdy RPGs that really move the needle, but like in a nerdy rpg move the needle for xbox i mean not in like um not in a oh maybe like i'd like you believe do we describe elder scrolls as a nerdy rpg because i think like if elder scrolls can do it what holds back fable from doing it i know we're talking about people know what elder scrolls is today right like elder scrolls is such a it's like a mainstream sort of game versus fable which isn't but could fable ascend to that could fable with this next one take that step into being something that it's not just the hardcore xbox audience that cares about it now it's more of a general gaming audience that pays attention if it comes out and gets tens and reviews and stuff like that does the general gaming audience appeal to microsoft they want a mainstream audience i feel right in terms of what they're looking for and what their success is and also we're getting into the same questions of like i guess that actually isn't the same thing but you know like elder scrolls found success outside of microsoft microsoft bought that success and then claims it as their own which of course you're allowed to do but it's like elder scroll six is going to sell a gajillion units of course and be a gigantic thing but it's like fable it's been so long fable is like for most people probably listening to this show something you hear about in your history books of people i played it you know in college like i said on parker's xbox like this isn't like something we just talked about this isn't a sequel to this game this isn't there's like a lot of hot commodity to it it is going to be like cool they're dropping this thing and do you want to follow this NPC around and marry them and break their heart and do this thing?
27:14Yeah. And on top of that, is there a compelling story outside of just the tech? Is there a compelling combat system outside of just the tech? We don't know yet. Yeah. I think there needs to be a balance between something being a mainstream success versus something being a success that like your audience is into, but isn't like going to take over the world. I don't think I'm, I think I align more with you as far as can Fable do that. The fact is as Microsoft, you have Minecraft, you have world of warcraft you have call of duty you have these other things that are taking over the world i don't think halo or fable or even like any of your core ip brands like those brands you think of and think xbox gears i don't think any of them need to be call of duty minecraft any of that shit right i think they just need to come out and be great and help kind of define the brand identity and keep your hardcore happy and then have call of duty and world warcraft do those millions and billions of numbers or whatever like i look at a like i'm looking at nintendo for example i feel like the when i think of the key components to hardcore nintendo fandom i think of 3d mario maybe this is me speaking for me but i think of 3d mario being like damn we've all we're all waiting for it when a new 3d mario comes out we all stop for it yeah 3d mario is not like the best selling game on the platform yeah 2d mario sells more than 3d mario pokemon sells more animal crossing sells more there are so many games that sell more than 3d mario but 3d mario still feels like such a main event of the platform because it's 3d mario i think that's what halo needs to be like halo doesn't need to compare to these other big things i think you just need it to be a rock solid thing that you can lean on when you do need your spokesperson your spokes ip hey march out halo to be on the next to the xbox icon is something that we can present to people to be like yo this is what xbox is but then also we have minecraft and the other things that help keep the ship afloat i think the question and why you i i find it hard not to scoff a bit at ralph's quote here is just like we're just in such a unsure landscape we're in such rough seas right now where it really is like all right we laid off 1500 people and there will be 1500 more layoffs by the end of fiscal year like yeah you go okay like i get i okay like what does that mean like how do you dodge that how do you dodge that like you release this game and you like i'd be i if i was working at playground right now i would feel very sure of my job up until we ship this fucking game in the spring and then i would go how much time before fiscal year oh they go a little bit longer on their fiscal fuck okay like what are we doing how is that like what are the metrics of success which has been the conversation with xbox now for the last three years because they keep fucking changing so what to asha and satin adela are currently the metrics of success and i don't think it's the value of the fable ip because i i'm sure sati could easily be like fucking fire every internal studio let's just do second party games with other people that use r.i.p and then fable still matters just as much even if it isn't playground making it oh sure but i hope that's not what i wanted to live in i want to live in the world of we have the big dog so we can have smaller games but we had that with double fine we kicked him to the fucking curb and tango game work you know what i mean like i i think of playground is a different echelon i agree i also look at it like in the way that PlayStation got rid of Blue Point.
30:33You know what I mean? Like that would be getting rid of a Playground where it's like, oh no, they do great work. Like Playground, they're putting out a good looking Fable game. Hopefully it lives up. But also they've been putting out Forza Horizons for multiple generations now that can consistently get the best reviews. And I also have to, I presume they must sell well or at least get a lot of players on Fable. I'm sorry, Forza Horizon for sure. But that's my concern. Yeah. It's like, cool. We let you do something, not Forza. and we got a single digit return on that. Stop doing that. Everybody who can go back to Fort Scent and everybody who can't get the fuck out.
31:06You know what I mean? That's what I see in the layups. Not the closure of the studio necessarily, but in the cool time to trim that fat. I got 1 ,500 fucking exit pods I got to get filled in right now. Everybody get out there, which sucks to say. Let's get some super chats in here. Phil DeGrave says, Will releasing in a post-GTA 6 world hurt fable? i yeah i think no i and i you know this is somebody who's watched a lot of gta of course i went to scotland everybody uh and then has seen the presentations that we've done reactions to the fable thing like i still think the way fable is doing their npcs in their world and the thousand handcrafted here's what they're doing is a lot different than the gta npcs that are also going about their day but it's not like i hover over a g and it's like oh this cashier is named jane and she's worked here 86 years and I can marry her.
31:59Like, that's not what you're getting out of Fable. And so I really do think like there is a shot that Fable, if they nail everything they've been talking about, could be a breath of fresh air in that way of like, oh, it was cool how living and breathing GTA's Vice City was. Now I get to go over here to Albion and see that on a different kind of scale and what I can do with that and play with that world. Dude, I just look at February. And granted, Fable's definitely one of the biggest games coming out in February, but it's such a busy beginning to the year because in February you got the new Tomb Raider, or I guess the Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis, which is a remake of the original.
32:33You got God of War Laufey. You got Persona 4 Revival. You got Fable. And then like get a couple months later, you're talking about Final Fantasy VII Revelation. Even in January, it's like you got Metroid Ravenous and Until Dawn 2. And a lot of these are exclusively, yet stranger than heaven. A lot of these are exclusives. And so like how much does God of War Laufey affect Fable? Probably not by that much. Right now, God of War or Fable, which would you pick? God of War, because I already love God of War. But it would be tough. I'd go Fable in a heartbeat, and I love God of War. No, you wouldn't.
33:03I would. You would not. You were not going Fable with God of War. I 100 % make my own story, make my own choices. I mean, this is the game. This is me. This is my kind of game. God of War is like your favorite game ever. It's true, yeah. But this is my third bite of that apple. I'm like, I'll get to it. I'm excited for it. But I'm not like, ah. I guess that's where I'm at in Fable is I'm like, I think no matter what, I'll end up playing Fable. But yeah, I don't know. I'm so locked into God of War. It was open world RPGs. You know me, especially third person. Sure. Fun little combat system. Let's go.
33:31Yeah. Make some choices, marry some people, break some hearts. But I think all of that happening also while being in somewhat of the shadow of GTA six, I think that's a tough thing is both those things at the same time. Yeah. And then of course, where is GTA online in the conversation? Onimus prime super chats and says Xbox I'd argue has more vessels for the players to tell their own stories than you playing a character with a personality. How's that working out for him? I still think I'm with you further out. I think that's a really fucking cool. Imagine if that was their fucking thing and they believed it.
34:04The people at the top, not the people making their games. They believe it, but at the top, they were like, they could own us prime. They could see it as clearly as you and I do. X by, I mean, it'd be the, it'd be the PlayStation for Michael commercial. Right. But like, like jumping between fallout and elder scrolls and a fable and all these different things. Like tell your stories. Like we are here for you to come and live in this world and this brand. said they're like do you want to buy game pads no i do not fuck we're firing people we are fucking do you want a green xbox it's more expensive than ever i think the game's got to be great he's got agreed agreed he's got to turn up the great game lever which is easier said than done obviously onimus prime also says also bat i'm sorry battlegrounds jesus christ uh balder's gate 3 wasn't shit until it was word of mouth spread and it became that Fable has that same chance.
34:55Every game has that chance. I don't think. The expectations were so low for Baldur's Gate. Granted, I'm not trying to anger the Baldur's Gate and fans. I was going to say, because I'm like, expectations were not low. That community had really, really high expectations. And you could bet that it'd be a really quality game. But I don't think anybody expected to blow up like it did. And it blew up, but it did because anything was possible. Even in Fable, they keep saying anything is kind of possible. And yet I need to see it. I need to play with it. I need to murder somebody on the streets and see how that affects everything.
35:33If Fable ends up being as quality as Baldur's Gate 3, I think it'll blow up. I agree. But also, do I think Fable is going to be as quality as Baldur's Gate 3? That's a really high bar. That's a bar that no video game should put themselves to. You don't need to be that good. But yeah, if it got that good, yeah, it's going everywhere. Foxy Steve plays says I don't think Fable as we knew it is important I don't think Fable as we knew it is important to Xbox I do think this new game and PG games are massive investments for Xbox considering playground success with Forza hopefully I hope that they see this in everything they said they're like no this is going to be a game of the generation we need to stick on this one and then Aaron Lime says what is the future of big single player games is every non games as a service game eventually going to be done by studios not under the big three while xbox and playstation specifically triple down on games as a service it feels like homeownership into rent lol i mean i think xbox i mean xbox bought activision and blizzard the games as a service companies right and so yeah like that's going to be them and also xbox i think has history in that when you're talking about i know halo halo more of a multiplayer game than a games as a service but where things have gone over time it's like i think a new halo would to some extent have to kind of like live in that genre a bit but i think with so many studios xbox can kind of be in both lanes i think playstation has to and will revert i don't if you if you keep doing the games and servicing the way you've been doing you will never put out video games i think you will shudder i really do and i know bad times still exist and we're still in the bad times or whatever i do believe we are coming out the other side of the games as a service storm like everyone has touched the fucking stove some have melted off their own fucking arms and they have to understand like wow we can't do this as i've talked about things are going to get so much worse before they get better now it's about hemorrhaging all these people who came here thinking that there was money in these hills so we need to dip and when you dip you're inevitably going to go back to i think hey well let's make quality games and cool stories and oh we understand what it can sell That's back to the Fable conversation of, I don't know what Xbox's leadership currently looks at as a success and what you need to sell to make, hey, what are we expecting Fable to do?
37:52And I think PlayStation falls in that same boat, yeah, where it's like, cool, we're going to put out really great games and hopefully they sell and then we figure out what the new average slash normal is and go from there. Can you believe Foam Stars came out? I can't believe Foam Stars. Can you believe Suicide Squad was what it was? I cannot believe Suicide Squad. Can you believe they made an Avengers game and it was a games as a service? remember when i remember that fucking fair games trailer that leaked that maybe was fair games is it it's like oh my god we're still they're still doing this the worst thing that happened to playstation last month and that's saying something everybody but whenever something bad happens to playstation or backs xbox damn it we'll be covering it here on kind of funny games daily because your support if you love this show pick up a kind of funny membership patreon.com slash kind of funny youtube.com slash kind of funny games apple spotify of course you could toss us a few bucks Get everything we do ad-free.

41:01That are all using Plan R! That exists this generation. Oh, this generation? This gen. Can you name me all the headphones? So, let's work. I am a desk. Use the Pulse Elite. Yes. Then you use and I use them at home because they're the fucking PlayLink, the fucking PlayStation Link shit. I use them on my, only on my portal and that one is the Pulse Explorer. Yeah. Then there, then you go back. The headset before looks so similar to the headset we have now. I forgot there was a headset before. PlayStation Gold. I think there was a gold, not colored-wise, name-wise. No, I think it was just called the PlayStation Pulse.
41:40You're right. Or was it like Pulse 3D? There was a PlayStation Pulse for sure. I think that's the one you're thinking of. There was definitely a PlayStation Plus Gold or some shit. No way. I don't think there was. Oh, I said Plus. That's not Pulse. Gold. Yeah, the PlayStation Gold Wireless Headset PlayStation 4. I didn't make this show. No way. Oh, that's PS4. Well, yeah, yeah, yeah. But I'm just saying, I know you're talking about this generation, and I'm with you. Fuck, let's find out what's happening now. Sony has introduced the new PlayStation Pulse and Pulse Edge. Fuck you. PlayStation Pulse and Pulse Edge wireless headsets, which both feature Plan R magnetic drivers and PlayStation Link connectivity.

42:24Planar magnetic headphones use thin, flat diaphragms that sit between magnets and can deliver lower distortions and cleaner bass than those that use different types of drivers. The company launched its first Planar magnetic headset, the Pulse Elite, in 2024. After it purchased the premium headphone brand Audaze, which was known for using its technology and other devices. In its announcement, Sony says both the Pulse and the Pulse Edge make it easy to pinpoint directional cues so that players can, say, easily tell where footsteps are coming and it's also the same fucking thing every time. It's always the same fucking thing.
43:04I'm trying to figure out what's new. Find the foot, yeah, the plan R shit is in the one I have for sure. Tempest 3D Audio Tech is in the one I have. Noise is only the one I have. At what point do I send my ears to Mark Suri? First place at the time, PlayStation Link enables the headsets to deliver ultra low latency audio that allows players to seamlessly switch between devices that support the connectivity including the ps5 the playstation portal pc and mac that said the headsets can also connect other devices via bluetooth both models have integrated mics that feature ai enhanced noise rejection to filter out background noise this is actually pretty impressive because they showed us this not with these because we didn't know yeah now with these the old ones where they took a doritos bag and crumpled it up with the speakers but oh we forgot the speakers that's also another one but when they took me and tim to see the speakers they um did a recording with like a bunch of noise in the background and they were showing off the AI in hand.
43:54Same shit they did with the regular Pulse Elites. I didn't realize that did that. They took a sun chip bag and crinkled it and then talked over it. Never mind. Both models aren't available for purchase yet. All signs point to the Pulse Edge being the more expensive of the two. To give you an idea of possible pricing the PlayStation Pulse Elite currently sits for$149 on Amazon. We joked around a lot. I will say I do love my Pulse Elite. they are my my favorite headphones my pulse explorers are everything to me you use them every day i use them every single day this is my headset at my desk for my playstation i pull the usb out i put it into pc back home it's the one at my uh desk or my uh entertainment center too anything a lot of people i've seen people in chat be like they don't like playstation link i like playstation link just for the ease of it and being able to connect multiple things to it through just one usb dongle playstation link i think gets swept up in the i i don't like PlayStation link either.
44:50I actually don't have a problem with it. I hate that the portal only uses PlayStation link, but I can't Bluetooth the portal. That's the problem. If you remember, they put this proprietary bullshit on the portal where it's like, let me Bluetooth my headphones. No, no, you got to use this. And for me, I'm somebody who likes to listen to podcasts sometimes. I'm playing an open-roll game or something. And so the fact that you can connect a link and then also connect to your Bluetooth at the same time, I think it's such an amazing feature that I wish more I guess I don't wish more things would adapt.
45:15I guess I wish there was a way to do that with more pieces of hardware being able to listen to two separate uh things yeah when i'm out there playing at my desk a lot of times i'll have the shows on the phone so i can listen in on what's happening out here while i'm playing a game the only thing that's tough about it is i still to this day with my explorers um and i think with any of my playstation headphones and stuff every now and then there's like a disconnection they just drop they just drop randomly and i think if they can fix that these are the perfect product um so i this is cool i don't know i i guess i do know right like this is them acquiring odyssey a few years ago and i think just being like yo do work keep making things for us yeah and so i think these are just iterative changes this sounds like a refresh maybe the previous version of the playstation pulses go away and this is oh yeah yeah for sure for sure for sure um so cool my question is what's up with like some of the other hardware things we can get what's up with like an actual playstation portable handheld device my guy come on my guy what are we doing about everything so i'm talking about over there uh story number four sad news max scoville is also leaving ign we go to bs that's a blue sky tune where max posts well starting in november i will no longer be employed by ign it's been a hell of a ride and i cannot understate how much of an honor and privilege the last 11 plus years have been this was a dream job but the best part of ign is was and always will be the people i never took this role for granted and i'm extremely grateful to everyone who took time to watch listen read or otherwise pay attention to what i was up to i hope you liked it i'm still very much wrapping my head around what's next so please reach out if you know of any opportunities of course this follows uh the news yes or two days ago yeah what howard the last 24 48 hours of layoffs at ign uh brian altana leaving bo leaving uh seth macy leaving all against their will and then yesterday aftermath we read an article out here when we talked about this at length saying that there was somebody else that was trying to decide for november they have kids they were told to move it would appear it was max scoville who is now out on his ass damn it's their loss he added so much uh to the culture of the office when i was at ign um i always felt good about like running something and working on a project with max i think he was so creative and just had a good vision of the kind of stuff he wanted to do.
47:39And I always loved working with him on stuff, whether it was beyond or a live show or up at noon and all that stuff. It's their loss with him and so many others that publicly have talked about it and like are the public facing parts of IGN. And then also the creative people on the other side of the camera that they're letting go of. It's really fucking upsetting. yeah yeah of course we talked about this yesterday you me and mike out here and obviously it echoes all the same things of you know this is not the way i think to treat people who have worked in brian's case for 17 and a half years max 11 plus years right and again just normal people too i don't care we've been there six months or whatever like layoffs in the rug being pulled out from under you and apparently being tied to move to la or else kind of thing like this whole thing fucking sucks yeah max is awesome i've known you know max uh since he was an intern at current tv doing my zombie makeup.
48:35I've been lucky enough to watch him in his entire career and see how incredible he is. And this is where this is always weird. Because when people, this happens, you start talking like they're dead. Yeah. You know what I mean? Over on our subreddit, Brian Altano, one of our fastball screenshotted Brian on Reset Era where Brian's like, I'm already talking to Greg about showing up on Kind of Funny Sue. And so like the good news for Kind of Funny fans, you'll see Brian and Max over here, I'm sure more than, seeing as how we never had them regularly. This is cool that they have less things to do until they have way more to do as i'm sure they will be snatched up right away uh but yeah we're gonna see these guys roll through here and do stuff with those yeah it's such a massive loss of talent for ign right i remember when max first started ign like hearing him and brian on shows together and making jokes and stuff i think it's incredibly underrated how hard it is to both be knowledgeable about video games on camera and then also a good host and also funny on camera yeah i it took me a while and I'm still learning how to be funny on camera like that's not a thing that you can find anywhere that's a skill that easy those are it's not easy those are skills they had to cultivate like those are sometimes things that you just have to have right you just have to have it you just have to have grown up with these things and have that internal knowledge of yeah just I was on the internet for years and years and years and learned about all these video games you can't just pluck that out of anywhere um and so that's why I have such confidence in the people that were let go like oh yeah brian and max are gonna land so strongly in the feed so is bo right so is seth macy they're gonna find things um but sucks on the ign side to lose this amount of talent because you don't find this anywhere or everywhere yeah exactly uh and what that means for ign going forward and what that looks like for them on live events and live streams and all the things they do it'll be a brave new world to figure out what that looks like and not have uh these two front-facing folks let alone the people that are going on in the background but we will keep our eyes peeled for now.
50:30We move on to story number five, uh, trails in the sky. Second chapter review roundup, uh, Metacritic 92 open critic 92. We start with, we start with George Yang at IGN.com a nine out of 10. There's never been a better time to get into the trails of series, trails series than now following the outstanding trails in the sky. First chapter remake, the trick, the trails in the sky. Second chapter remake is just as fantastic. It captures everything that made the original so endearing and is not just a fresh coat of paint. It's a complete makeover with a polished art style and stellar voice direction that enhance its elegant storytelling and charismatic cast.
51:07It also capitalizes on over two decades worth of gameplay iterations and puts them into one action-packed yet emotional adventure. Despite a temporary lull in its penultimate act, that doesn't stop Second Chapter from being a quintessential Trails game and RPG in its own right. Robert Ramsey over at Push Square gave it a 9 out of 10. Direct sequels simply don't get much better than this. Trails in the Sky, second chapter, with its already excellent predecessor setting the stage, this brilliantly heartfelt RPG is free to tell an outstanding character-driven story. And then Dan Reb-Victorio over at Smash Pad gave it a 4.5 out of 5.
51:49Given that the game is a direct continuation and has you explore most of the same areas, the fact that its gameplay systems keep things fresh makes it all the more impressive. And that goes without saying, the game is roughly one and a half times bigger than the last one. At the end of the day, Trails in the Sky, second chapter, is a remake of what many consider the best game in the Trails series. Of course, it's amazing. This snuck up on me. I mean, Greg, if you were paying attention, I mean, last year, Trails in the Sky, first chapter. Yeah, I know, Mike did it. He painted it, Greg got it on his own.
52:21Who's got it on this one? Who's got open critical? Raj former. Ah, shit. Him and that and GTA 6. Yeah, GTA 6. So that's going to be tough. I think it's locked. That Raj is going to win? Yeah. I mean, A, he's also got Belmont's curse. If Order of the Sigan Star comes out and gets a 95. If Ace Combat, A, Wings. Actually, I'm already pretty ahead of Roger. Because what's Roger? Roger right now is sitting at a 61. Oh, with this? With this. Okay. I don't know. Well, yeah, he has quite a few games because he has Rayman Legends retold. We got to stop letting him get these re's. He loves a re-made. I told you we should have just wiped it all out this year.
53:05He has Dragon Dog 2 Dark Arisen. I guess that's a DLC, which I thought... I forget if that was banned or not. DLC is fine. It's one of those... It's DLC packaged within the game because it's getting ported to Switch 2 and stuff this time around, too. So this is what I also want to address because I saw a Reddit thread about it. People were very confused because Roger and Mike had a trade pending. I don't remember what the two games were, but it was very much like Mike had a really great game that he wanted to trade for Roger for a very terrible game. Yeah. It was very clear collusion. Yes. And it was two games that were already reviewed, which I like I remember because it like went up to us as a vote.
53:47And I remember vetoing it. I was like, I think this goes against the nature of the game. If you already know the score, if you play someone in a fantasy football league and they score points, you can't just rescind them for the week. You can't put them back on your bench. They played. So when trades happen, the site pings everybody else and is like, all right, take a vote on whether or not this trade goes through. But the site tells you, if you feel like these people are fucking up the game, or if they're colluding, colluding uh then that's against the spirit of the game and you should vote no and so i think i think it was me and barrett i don't know if anybody else voted but me and barrett voted no on that yeah fair enough because it was very much like oh let's stack it in in roger's favor favor and here's the thing i don't know if i'm letting these two compete next year
54:39i need to find what the trade it was some ludicrous level of oh you guys are just trying to make this not fun for other people playing the game. That's been their goal for the last couple of years, has it not? But now it's crossed the line for me. Where there might have to be disciplinary action. I told you Bless to put them on the same team. That might happen next year. It might just be the Roger and Mike team. You don't get to fuck the game because the game will fuck you back. God. I want the game to fuck me back. Blessing. Yeah. The game fucking me really hard would be big news. Yeah. But if I wanted something smaller, the tiniest news I need to know about, where would I go?

Just have to re-sign it. He was going to do electrical tape. Or, yeah, packing tape, clear tape. I was like, I don't know about that, but good luck. 1:02:47And I'd always say it was too much. And so I'd scream Baker's Dozen except when it's 13. When it's 13, we don't say Baker's Dozen. We say Baker's Dozen around every other one. So the old physical editions of Fearzine are sold out. Well, then they don't get any of my money. But you can get digital. Not all of them. Oh, yeah. All the physical ones.
