In short

Ipswich Town’s near-signings Marcelino Nunez (Norwich City midfielder) and Darnell Furlong (West Brom right back), plus squad-trimming implications and preview of Ipswich vs Derby County.

Guests/backgrounds

Roscoe (host) and Gunnar Stout Watson (co-host). Gunnar recently returned from Cornwall and is an Ipswich-focused transfer analyst; Roscoe leads discussion and asks about transfer and match implications.

Key claims

  • Nunez is close to signing: £10m package, £7.5m guaranteed; medical in Suffolk; expected within 24–48 hours.
  • Nunez is 25, Chilean international midfielder; technical creator with spectacular goals but patchy injury record (recent ankle issue).
  • Ipswich are also close to signing Furlong: £3m guaranteed over three years; reunites with former West Brom/teammates (O’Shea, Kipre, Townsend, Palmer, Button).
  • Squad limit is 25; signings would raise senior players to 29, requiring exits/deregistration.

Notable examples

  • Nunez scored the winner in the last East Anglian derby at Carrow Road.
  • Furlong scored for West Brom in the promotion-season 2-0 loss at the Hawthorns.
  • Derby preview: Ipswich aim for first league win at Portman Road in 2025; Derby have defensive issues and injuries; ex-Town players Calum Elder and Matt Clarke are involved.

0:08Ross Halls:Hello everybody, it's me Roscoe and welcome to the latest edition of the Kings of Anglia Itris Town podcast sponsored by Stardust Spirits. And Stu, who's the other sponsor?

0:19Stuart Watson:You've put me on the spot. Molecular. Molecular for all your car cleaning needs. Fabulous company in Layston, Suffolk, supporting them. Definitely.

0:32Ross Halls:Yeah, I'm still struggling to say it. I just didn't want to butcher it for that amazing company. Of course, a local company, just like Stardust Spirits. But thanks for those guys sponsoring the podcast once again. And, yeah, I'm joined by Gunnar Stout Watson, my friend, fresh off your trip from Cornwall. How are you?

0:48Stuart Watson:Very good, thank you. Yeah, I'm glad I've got a few days resting because it's all starting to kick off at Ipswich Town. sirens sounding all around us at the moment. Some juicy old transfer stories to get our teeth into today.

1:03Ross Halls:Yes, I know people love hearing the sexy stuff and we've got a lot of sexy stuff to talk about. And as you mentioned, a lot of sirens was going off in East Anglia last night because that town are close to making an incredible bit of business that you just never thought would happen in the current era of football. It's just how I'm close to signing a Norwich City player. One of their star players, Stu, Marcelino Nunes, who had scored against town in the last East Anglian Derby at Carrad Road. Let us know more about this.

1:38Stuart Watson:Couldn't write it, could you? Was it 16 years without a win in the East Anglian Derby? Let's just go and sign the player that scored the winner last time against him to try and make that not happen again. yeah the story as we understand it was broken by the telegraphs john percy last night the ipswich town are closing in on marcelino nunez we spoke to our sources and very quickly had that backed up likewise with our our colleagues over the border at the edp and the pinkham this is pretty much a done deal he was in in suffolk last night undergoing a medical so So barring any major issues, that should happen in the next 24 to 48 hours.

2:23Stuart Watson:It's been described as a£10 million package. It's£7.5 million guaranteed with the potential for further add-ons that could take it to 10, but it's a£7.5 million deal. Big debate about the fee, whether it's good money for Norwich, for a player who's turned down new contracts, is now in the last year of his deal. I think the general consensus is yes, that probably is decent money given his contract situation, but not for the club that he's going to. The Canaries are spitting feathers. You only have to have a little look at the reaction north of the border to this one. They are not happy. I'm very intrigued to see how this is all going to play out.

3:06Ross Halls:Yeah, that derby in October is going to be very interesting. Of course, it's at Porton Road, but I'm sure when he returns to Carroll Road, it's going to be a very interesting reception. But yes, Stu, he's 25 years of age, a midfielder, Chilean international. He's been, obviously, at Carradro for the last three years. And yeah, he's had a few injury moments in his career. He's obviously actually had ankle injury recently. I'm sure that will get brought up in the medical. But yeah, he's a player that he knows the championship very well.

3:34Stuart Watson:Yes, I'll talk about the injuries straight away, get that out of the way. I guess the feeling from Norwich that he's a fabulous player. he's a real technical player their most creative player capable of the sublime from set pieces and shooting from range he's had some real superb goals he's not a prolific goal scorer by any stretch as a deeper or a box-to-box midfield player but when he does score they tend to be spectacular we know the free kick that he scored in said East Anglia and Derby last time out at Carrow Road the only knock on him is probably his injury record has been a bit patchy. It's been a combination of hamstring and ankle, looking back on it.

4:20Stuart Watson:It's an ankle injury that he's got at the moment. Started the season very well. Had a really good game in the Carabao Cup and then was playing well against Portsmouth and had to go off early in the second half with an ankle issue. He's had ankle issues in the past. I believe the quotes at the time was that Norwich feared it was going to be a bad one, but it's not as bad as they first feared and there was talk of him coming back after this international break so hopefully that's nothing too severe but I guess there is that slight injury question mark against him just looking at the number of starts that he's made for Norwich over the three years he's had there so he started 23 games in his first season 25 in the second and 27 last year So that's 75 league starts out of a possible 138, which is not terrible, but not amazing either.

5:16Stuart Watson:So we'll see how he goes on that front. Yeah, a feeling that he's, as I say, a very gifted technical player, capable of moments of magic. Maybe consistency is something that he's working on still. You see some of the comments from Norwich fans that he has one very good game in three. But under Kieran McKenna, at the age of 25, there's still plenty of room for growth. And maybe they can get hold of him. And if they can add some consistency to his game, make him that little bit more robust, hopefully they've signed a very good player here.

5:55Ross Halls:And it sounds like he's pushed for the move. And that is surprising when he's a Norwich player. I'm sure he knows about the East Anglia and Derby. I know he's from Chile and I don't know about his English, but I'm sure a lot of people in Norwich have told him, you know, it's just town of the enemy. Now he's obviously gone. You know what? I like what's going on down at Suffolk. So I want to go down there.

6:17Stuart Watson:Yes, he's from Chile. He arrived, I think, with limited English. I think a lot of his early interviews were done via translators, Spanish translators. But he's three years in here now. He's played in an East Anglian derby. He scored a winner in an East Anglian derby. He will know the strength of feeling you would imagine on this. So I think this speaks volumes of his character that he's kind of pushed for it. The briefings from Norwich end is, I think, obviously to try and dampen the anger around it, is that this was the only option for Norwich on the table, that there were no other clubs that there were options to sell to.

6:59But, yeah, he's pushed for it, is our understanding.

7:04Stuart Watson:It's something that he wanted to do. And I had a look back. He did an interview with Sky Sports fairly early on in his Norwich journey. And he talked about having big ambitions of, you know, becoming a real big name for Chile at major tournaments and getting to the Premier League and playing Champions League football eventually in his career. So he's a guy with big ambitions. and he's obviously not afraid to ruffle a few feathers and fills the Ipswich at this juncture is in a far better place to deliver on those ambitions. So I'm still getting my head around it. I never thought I'd see the day where this sort of move would happen.

7:45Stuart Watson:I know there's precedent. I know players have moved both ways in the past, but more recently there was Liam Gibbs and that was a compensation fee and he wasn't quite getting the chances at Ipswich. Ipswich were in League One. Norwich were Premier League at the time. So that was that. Then you're going back to sort of Andy Marshall in 2001, the goalkeeper. That was a Bosman free transfer. So again, Norwich was sort of powerless to stop that. But for a significant transfer fee to change hands for a star player is quite remarkable. It really is.

8:26Ross Halls:Yeah, it isn't just like their bit part player. This is their star man. And you can see a lot of Norwich fans, if you go back to old tweets, and I think they're trying to delete it, like build him a statue and all that, when he was scoring goals, doing great moments for them. And yeah, I'd rather be in Itchristown shoes right now. I'm sure Norwich fans are not happy. But yeah, it's very interesting. And yeah, Mark Ashton and co, So obviously it's been a bit of a lot of negativity going around, Stu, after the Preston game. This is an opportunity to go, well, let's take the best player from our rivals.

8:58Yeah, it is.

8:59Stuart Watson:And I'm sure that's played a little bit of a part in this transfer, that this is a bit of a sort of a PR move to try and get fans who are getting, let's be honest, getting a little bit twitchy after a slow start to the season. And a bit of, how do we describe this transfer window? They've got themselves in a little bit of a muddle in this transfer window. And here we are, what, five days out from deadlines, still some holes to fill, well publicised that they've missed out on people like Hayden Hackney and others. So going and nicking one of Norwich's better players certainly helps from getting the fans back on side point of view.

9:44Stuart Watson:is is the money have Ipswich overpaid for him I see a lot of similarities with this deal with Nathan Broadhead's departure to Wrexham a player that you know a really technically gifted player perhaps with the the slight knock of inconsistency slash injuries against him going into the final year of his contract most fans didn't want him to go but accepted the money was good for someone in his final year um and it's basically the same financial package isn't it 7.5 million pounds we were going wow to get that sort of money for Nathan Broadhead from Wrexham is a good deal um Wrexham is where would be very different to selling Nathan Broadhead to Norwich for example though isn't it so um and actually in terms of their play style there is some similarities different positions completely.

10:33Stuart Watson:Nathan Broadhead's that more advanced sort of forward player. Nunez is a midfielder. He's played a variety of midfield roles for Norwich. He's played sort of a deeper midfield role, but primarily he's played as one of sort of two midfielders. They don't play with two holders. They play with sort of two proper midfielders at times, sometimes three, and he's played in most of those roles. They've tried him further forward as a 10. I've seen quotes from him saying he sees himself and enjoys it more as an 8 or a 10 rather than a 6. So my feeling is he's probably brought in to be a bit of rotation competition for Jens Kajusta in that sort of left-sided box-to-box role.

11:23Stuart Watson:And that will have knock-on effects for the rest of the squad, which we'll get into. But yeah, like Broadhead, technically gifted player, great vision, eye for a pass and hopefully can get the team ticking a little bit more.

11:37Ross Halls:Yeah, so interesting. Yeah, you just didn't think in this day and age, it's your town will be signing a Norwich player. But it's very close to happening, ladies and gentlemen. Well, Stu, we're going to get into more sexy stuff because as we're just about to record, Town are about to sign another West Brom player. I think it's the sixth one that Kieran McKenna signed over the last few years. Darnell Forlong, who's a right back from the Baggies. What do you know about this one?

12:07Stuart Watson:Yeah, this made me smile this morning because I've had a few jokes with Kieran McKenna and Alex Palmer out in Austria at the Austrian pre-season camp about getting the old band back together. And who was it? So Ipswich would have signed, it was after Kipre had signed. And we went out to Austria and we spoke to Kieran McKenna about that, got some on-the-record stuff. And then when the microphones had stopped recording, I sort of had a bit more of a relaxed conversation with Kieran. And I said, obviously, that 2-0 defeat at the Hawthorns during the promotion season has stuck in your mind, Kieran, getting that entire back five back together virtually.

12:52Stuart Watson:and he sort of smiled and paused and then quit. Yeah, we've got to go and get Darnell Furlong now. And I thought nothing of it. I thought it was just a throwaway joke. And here we are, Ipswich are on the verge of signing Darnell Furlong. Yeah, understood it's a£3 million guarantee that will be spread out over the next three years. He's on his way to Suffolk as we speak mid-morning Thursday. day and we'll come in to join as you say former teammates Dara O'Shea, Cedric Kipre, Connor Townsend, Alex Palmer and David Button as well so very much getting the old band back together that game at the Hawthorns where Ipswich didn't get a sniff and they lost 2-0 as clearly stuck in Kieran's mind he obviously feels they need to be a little bit more solid at right back I don't think right back was top of our list of positions that we thought Ipswich needed strengthening but here we are they're about to sign one yeah and he's an experienced player as Ulster isn't

13:55Ross Halls:he he's played over 200 times in the championship for West Brom he also scored in that game at West

14:02Stuart Watson:Brom did header really good header wasn't it near post sort of flicked header be well beyond the near post flicked is probably doing it just disservice but that was a great goal that sort broke the deadlock early on there, wasn't it? Yeah, experience, as you say, he's 29. He's been at West Brom for six seasons now, was part of a promotion winning side. He's had a season in the Premier League with them. I think he's got some Axel Twensebi qualities about him. It feels to me that Kieran McKenna and the coaches have had a look at Ipswich's start to the season. There's a reason that Ipswich didn't, that Ben Johnson never really got a run of games at all at right back in the Premier League.

14:45Stuart Watson:Whenever he was used, it was used more in a wing back or even as a winger at times. And that's mainly because Axel Trenzebi did really well. And this system, as we know, the right back tucks in, plays virtually as a third centre back at times, which allows Leif Davis the freedom to bomb on from left back. I'm not sure Ben Johnson is that player. he's better going forwards than he is defensively Ipswich have obviously signed Ashley Young but he's 40, he's not someone who's going to rattle out 40 odd games from right back so Harry Clark injured at the moment obviously spent the back end of last season out on loan as well they've gone out and signed a right back in Darnell Furlong and he will also bring to the table a bullet of a long throw as well, that is a real weapon and we've seen in the early stages of this season, the Championship, we knew it, but we've been reminded of it.

15:39Stuart Watson:It's a scrap, it's physical and you need some different strings to your bow. They're proper long throws. They're not Jonas Knudsen loopy long throws that go nowhere. They're proper sort of low-flighted, powerful ones that defenders hate to deal with. So he'll bring that as well.

16:00Ross Halls:because Jens did it a few times last season in the Premier League he was like trying to bring a few long throws but wasn't really it but um Daniel Forlong will be the man to do that um and yeah it's just it's just crazy we're signing all the West Brom players um as you mentioned earlier so um yeah that's two in the door which then makes it 29 senior players too

16:20Stuart Watson:yeah just I mean going back on signing the two signings that we mentioned someone who scored against Ipswich in an East Anglia derby, someone who's scored against them for West Brom in a game that clearly stuck in their mind. For all the talk about how football's full of all data analysis and Ipswich using Brighton's data model and all of these analysts coming out of your ears, the amount of times that managers still ultimately go back and sign players that have stuck in their mind and done well against them on any given day, it still happens, doesn't it? And that seems to be the case here. So, yeah, state of play with the squad.

16:57Stuart Watson:If you have a look at Alex's piece online this morning, where he's looked at the sort of state of play going into the last few days at the window, as he's outlined, 27 senior players at the moment. If, as expected, Nunez and Furlong sign, that will take the squad up to 29. You're allowed a maximum of 25. So, clearly, there's some trimming required. You need to get rid of four one way or another, whether that be exits or deregistering them. And clearly there's some other players that Ipswich want to sign as well. So it's probably going to be kind of more than four players that will need to sort of exit or be deregistered.

17:39Stuart Watson:There's some obvious candidates in there and there's some less obvious ones. And I mean, do you want to go through some potential exits now, having a look at the squads? what do you reckon? There's some more obvious ones, isn't there?

17:55Ross Halls:Yeah, but I want to sort of maybe start with, because we've got that link with Ben Johnson with Darno for long. He obviously was linked to Fulham early in the summer. Do you think he could be exit door before the deadline?

18:10Stuart Watson:Yes, I do. And I've seen people say, well, is it more a case of, obviously, that it was a short left-back at the moment with the Connor Townsend long-term injury. No one really backing up Leif Davis at the moment. I know Kieran McKenna was umming and ahhing as to whether he wanted to use up a squad place by going out and signing a left-back or he has acknowledged there's other players in the squad that could fill in there if need be. We saw Jacob Greaves do it when Leif Davis was suspended and he did it quite well at the back end of the Premier League season. And Ashley Young, of course, can play over on that side as well.

18:46Stuart Watson:so could it be that Furlong comes in as the starting right back Johnson moves down to sort of supporting right back and Ashley Young is seen more as left back cover potentially but my feeling is that you're not going to carry Ben Johnson who will be on a decent wage they managed to sign him from West Ham on a Bosman and West Ham had offered him a new deal which he turned down so Ipswich would have paid him a decent wage to get him going into the Premier League last season. Yes, he will have had a paid cut as part of the relegation, but it will still be decent money and you don't want to be using a chunk of that money.

19:24Stuart Watson:I wouldn't have thought on someone that's going to be warming your bench more often than not. So I don't know if that Fulham interest has gone away now. I need to go away and see who they've signed and what the situation is there. I think they're the only club that have been linked with him this summer, but you would imagine he would have suitors. I don't know what sort of money Ipswich would be able to get for him at this juncture. But my gut feeling at this stage is that it puts Ben Johnson very much in the firing line for an exit as we head towards the transfer deadline.

20:00Ross Halls:Shall we stay with defence, Stu? Because obviously there's a potential exit of Luke Wolferton, who has been linked to a few clubs over the last couple of weeks. And obviously at the moment, Dara O'Shea, Jack Gries are the two stand-up kit praise there as well. do you think Luke Wolfman could potentially leave town?

20:17Stuart Watson:Yes, and it saddens me to say that because Luke's an Ipswich boy. It's a fantastic story. Academy-produced players have been few and far between in recent years. It was a real shame that that group of him, Flynn Downs, Andre Dezel, Tristan Nydam, I still remember that game, that pre-season game against West Ham when Paul Hurst had just come in and the four of them did really well. And there's a lovely picture of them, great mates, sharing a joke on the pitch. And obviously it came at a juncture where Ipswich as a club were struggling and relegation came. And obviously Tristan's career ended for different reasons with the injury, which was really sad.

21:01And Flynn moved on.

Read the full transcript

21:07Ross Halls:who else did I mention in there? Andre.

21:09Stuart Watson:Andre moved on as well of course but Luke's remained and he's been like a cat with nine lives isn't he? Ipswich Town. He himself sort of jokes there's been many a time where he's wanted out, he felt like he was done he was unhappy he was sort of and then Kieran McKenna came along and it all turned around for him and he was a big big part of those back to back promotions he's at an age now where I have to check how old Luke is but he's not a kid anymore and he's had a taste of it and he wants to play, he's 26 so it feels to me like he's someone that is wanting to go and play football which ideally could do without having to replace him it's a hard sell isn't it when you're going, well, you're ultimately, you can't really say you're coming in to compete with Dara O'Shea because he's your newly appointed captain and quite clearly is going to be playing sort of week in, week out.

22:11So, yes, in answer to your question,

22:14Stuart Watson:I can see a scenario where Luke Wolfenden leaves, but it would have to be on Ipswich's terms and they will have to have somebody else lined up. There's obviously been a few links to centre-backs in recent days. So whether that all falls into place before 7pm on Monday we'll have to see.

22:31Ross Halls:Yeah, because Coventry are the team and Watford are clubs interested. So yeah, it'll be interesting. Another defender, Elkin Baggett Stewie. He recently signed a new three-year deal at town. He's obviously now going to be part of that senior squad limit because he's now got to that age. Obviously, Elkin's been out on loan, had some injury issues. Could he potentially just stay around to be an option if Wolfie goes or another loan is probably best for him?

22:58Stuart Watson:My feeling is that it would be alone is best for him But yeah, you're right If Wolfenden really pushes for a move And Ipswich can't quite get someone else in And they don't want to leave him short at centre-half They could keep him about But I can't see that I think the only way Wolfie will go Is if Ipswich sign a centre-half And I'm almost certain the Elkenbagger that will go on another loan. He needs to play football. He went to Blackpool last season. Heaps of praise from Steve Bruce. Did well whenever he played, but had some injuries and wasn't. He needs that season where he goes to a club and plays 40-odd games and gets that sort of season under his belt before it, which can kind of fully assess whether he is someone that, you know, has a long-term future here.

23:47Stuart Watson:The fact that they've handed him a new contract says how highly they speak of him. But I think he needs to go away and play games this season. So given the trimming mission that we've talked about at the start of this, he feels like a fairly certain loan departure to me.

24:03Ross Halls:Cameron Humphries then, Stu, because he's played a few minutes this season, obviously did well in the Cup, had a really good loan spout at Wickham. Now he'll be linked to some midfielders as well.

24:16Stuart Watson:Yeah.

24:17Ross Halls:What do you reckon? What's his current situation? Well, the midfield unit will be Matasiwa, Kuyusta, Nunez, Jack Taylor, he says, with a hint of a question mark at the end of it.

24:34Stuart Watson:Because I think, you know, we've talked about Nunez and Kuyusta being probably vying for that left-sided box-to-box rollout of the two midfielders. Where does that leave Jack Taylor? There's some shared qualities with Nunez in terms of him being someone who likes a shot from range. Jack Taylor's been a bit of an enigma to me. He's come in at Ipswich. We've got a very small sample size because he's just started very few games, hasn't he? He's always been involved off the bench. You can never fault his effort. He's got bite. He's got energy. I don't think, even at the start of this season, I can't say he's had poor games, but has he done enough to really say, that spot's my own?

25:18Stuart Watson:Probably not. And he arrived at a juncture where Ipswich had just been promoted from League One and were probably at that stage looking to kind of establish themselves in the Championship. But the journey was what it was and maybe it's gone a bit faster than maybe left Jack Taylor sort of behind a little bit. I don't know. So he might be one in the firing line. Cameron Humphries my feeling for a long time has been yes absolutely he will go out on loan again he needs to sort of build upon the game time that he had at Wickham last season it's the left back situation that clouds the water here a little bit he is someone that can play left back has done a fair bit of it at youth level done a bit of it in the first team as well they love him as a character despite his youth he's a real leader about the place real low maintenance as well as a squad player, which you need, every squad needs.

26:14Stuart Watson:So maybe they'll keep him around for that. But again, he counts as a senior player and they've got to be very careful about staying within that. So I'm not sure which way that will go at the moment. And I get the feeling when Kieran McKenna has spoken about Cameron that he's pretty torn on that one as well as to what the best move is for him.

26:33Ross Halls:Because, yeah, you don't really want to go to Mounts of League One again because he's sort of completed that, completed that, mate. is now going to the championship and maybe going to a team who are fighting for survival potentially. Maybe one of the newly promoted teams, but Rex and Birmingham, no. Charlton, maybe. Maybe an Oxford potentially. But yeah, we can have a discussion another day about that. But obviously, we've got injuries as well. Townsend won't be registered. We know about that. But you've got Harry Clark, Ali O 'Hammadi, Wes Burns. What do you reckon with those? Because Wes Burns obviously recovering from his ACL injury.

27:09Ross Halls:Alhamadi's recently come out with a message and with a calf injury, Harry Clark with knee ligaments. It just depends how long they're out for, really, and do you risk register them just in case they can come back?

27:21Stuart Watson:Well, in an ideal world, if you weren't tight for numbers, you'd want to register Wes Burns. I think it was the end of January when he did his ACL up at Liverpool. In this day and age, you can come back from Crucius within sort of nine months. and he's talked about, I think, in an interview with Sky about sort of October being his target to come back. That's good to hear. Player will always set themselves ambitious targets with coming back, and he obviously feels his rehab is going well. There's coming back, and there's coming back, isn't there? There's sort of being fit to sort of train and run around on the grass, but the intensity of the championship, and it's going to take you several weeks to kind of get up to speed, especially for someone who's explosive like Wes

28:11Ross Halls:and his qualities are based around pace.

28:14Stuart Watson:So if Ipswich feel that more likely it's going to be till sort of nearer December back end of the year before he's fully contributing, is it worth taking up a space in the squad with him? That's something that they're going to have to carefully consider. Ali Elhamadi would almost certainly have gone out we know Ipswich have been looking at another striker on top of Hurston at Pong the Ivan Azon deal didn't go through that was Ipswich's choice by the way not the players decision that is something I think they wanted to make a big deal of it because you're trying to protect the player and the selling club but that was something in the medical that they weren't convinced by a bit like the Broya deal last summer so they've decided not to progress with that but the plan clearly was to bring in another striker or is still to bring in another striker and that would have meant Ali Alhamadi departing one way or another whether that was permanently or on loan and then fresh from that penalty miss and the night to forget against Bromley he goes and picks up an injury which is a sort of a medium term one so whether that puts Ipswich in an awkward position because they don't want him taking up a place in the squad.

29:30But if he's back in a few weeks, he could have a fit player

29:34Stuart Watson:that you haven't been able to register, which is not ideal. So whether a club will take the risk on saying, yeah, we'll take him on loan, whether they can come up with a financial package that they only start paying once he's fit to play and on the basis that he might not be back for a few weeks. I don't know how that goes, but he's certainly, I don't think, going to be taking up a spot in this 25-man squad for the first half of the season.

30:02Ross Halls:And Harry Clarke is another one. He was linked to a few clubs before that injury. He's another one you don't really want to risk. He could be out longer because it sounds like it could be a long one.

30:14Stuart Watson:Yeah, knee injury, we don't know the severity of that, but it's not a short-term one. so again looking at the numbers that we're talking about he is one that surely won't be registered for the first half of the season especially with Furlong coming in now and then I guess they'll kind of reassess that when January comes with Harry Clark Okay then but there's no other surprise exits

30:42Ross Halls:Drakken?

30:43Stuart Watson:Well Jack Clark I've kind of thrown in in the mix and Ben Johnson as well who I've already discussed They're probably two players that we weren't necessarily talking about potentially leaving. Both of them started all three of the opening championship games. Do you mean Jack Taylor, not Jack Clark? Jack Taylor, sorry. Not Jack Clark. Stand down, everybody. Jack Taylor. Jack Taylor and Ben Johnson have both started the first three games, league games of the season. But, you know, with Nunez and Furlong coming in, I do wonder if they could be ones that might be considered for sale.

31:22Ross Halls:Okay, don't worry, because we were talking about Harry Clark just a minute ago, and then we're talking about Jacks.

31:26Stuart Watson:Too many Clarks, too many Jacks.

31:30Ross Halls:Yeah, but there we go. I want to also tell what Binlink's do with Jordan James. He wrecks him, I have a team that's battling with him. He's obviously playing in France. He's actually a teammate of Azor Matasiwa. so another midfielder so that does mean if he signs then yeah Jack Taylor or somebody has to probably leave yeah

31:55Stuart Watson:need to do a little bit more digging on that one but do Ipswich need another central midfielder though they want another central midfielder possibly because I think you know we're talking about the midfielders at the moment there's not really anyone that is has the same qualities as Matasiru, that sort of holding midfielder whose job is to play the Sam Morsi role of recent years and just shield the back four, break things up, give the ball to somebody else, play some forward passes. I don't think Nunez is that. I don't think Kuyusta is that. Yeah, I don't think they've... Ideally, they could do with another one of that type, I would say, in terms of central midfielders.

32:43So I don't know loads about Jordan James.

32:48Stuart Watson:I need to have a little look more into him and whether he would fit the mould in that respect. But if they were to... Yeah, personally, I think they need a little bit more cover in that side of the midfield unit.

33:01Ross Halls:And a funny thing about him, he now makes it the third player that's been linked this week, who scored his last... Well, last time he played against him, he scored against them.

33:11Stuart Watson:He did, yeah. Yeah. So, and obviously, yeah, Propbos celebrated, didn't he? So, yeah, it's crazy.

33:18Ross Halls:And Josh Brownhill was another player, Stu. That's sort of a name that's been linked over the summer. He's a free agent, Burnley, but Saudi Arabia clubs are interested. So, he could fit that mould nicely.

33:29Stuart Watson:Wow. Could he? I mean, you find Josh Brownhill, who was probably one of the championship players of the season last year. He got 18 goals for Burnley on their way to promotion. Now a free agent, wasn't able to agree new terms with them. I mean, they're talking about£100 ,000 a week offers from the Middle East and stuff for him. Tips which I would imagine have still got some money to play with, but not that sort of money. I'd be surprised. Famous last words. I know there's been talk of the interest still being there in Josh Brownhill. but I'd be surprised if they could do that.

34:11Ross Halls:Well, we should wait in Steele, but yeah, Steele, it's going to be a busy next few days for Kieran McKenna & Co. Deadline, obviously, Monday, 7pm, so a nice earlier deadline than normal, which is nice, but obviously it does get that. You've only got maybe four hours less than you normally would get, but hopefully McKenna & Co. won't go too late into the deadline.

34:31Stuart Watson:Well, there's still plenty to do. We talked about it. Maybe a Wolfenden replacement required. Maybe another central midfielder. We talked about striker, didn't get Azon done. Probably still want to do something else there. And possibly sort of a versatile attacker as well. If you think back to the promotion season, Kieran McKenna always likes to have sort of seven or eight players vying for those three positions in behind the striker. At the moment, he's got, I'm looking at it, Philogene and Jack Clark down the left. I think those two will kind of be battling for one slot. Schmodix and Chaplin for the central number 10.

35:07Stuart Watson:And then you've got McAteer of Benet and then Burns with the question mark against him with the injury on the right. So at the moment, that's six fit players. I think he might want one more. I mean, Akpom is sort of part of that unit nominally as well, given his versatility. But I still wouldn't shock me if one more got added to that. Obviously, there's the lad from Norway whose name I haven't got to hand, so I won't try and pronounce it. I think that is still in play. Kieran McKenna is someone that likes to have a long think about whether these deals are right to do. So quite often they'll get the deals, the principle, the agreement in principles in place.

35:51Stuart Watson:They'll get fairly down the line with things. And then sometimes it's just a case of the manager having a good think about whether it's the right thing to do. And that is my understanding of that situation at the moment. So it's starting to hot up and there's still plenty more that can happen.

36:06Ross Halls:And obviously, there's games to get ready for as well. Town, of course, back at Portland Road to take on Derby County. So all this going on in the background, they've also got to prepare for a game where they're still looking for their first win of the season in the Championship, Stu. Should we have enough of this sexy stuff now? Should we draw the line over it? We'll just have to wait and see. But yeah, it's going to be a busy next few days.

36:29Stuart Watson:It is, so yeah, just stay tuned. We're trying to be proactive. We're trying to be reactive as quick as possible. Yeah, stick with us and we'll try and tell you what you know. We managed to hopefully give you a little bit more insight on the latest with that chat. And in amongst all this, lest we not forget, it's an important game of football on Saturday against Derby. We're still waiting for their first win of the season after dropping down. Derby County are heading to Suffolk and could really do with a win, couldn't they?

37:02Ross Halls:Yes, very much so. And obviously, he'll be speaking to Kieran McKenna tomorrow at the press conference. So you'll find out a bit more, but he'll do his normal stick, I'm sure. Not our player, but you never know. When we drop this, they could announce one of the signings, but we shall see.

37:15Stuart Watson:Yeah, I feel for Kieran because his thoughts are, he'll have probably left a lot of this transfer stuff with Mark Ashton and Luke Verhan and everyone behind the scenes. his job is to pair a football team for the next match coming up and you hear it all the time from managers i'm focusing on what i've got in the building and we've got a game coming up and he'll want to go to a press conference and talk about that and i'm sure his messaging at the press conference tomorrow is he's going to have to go through all of the transfer stuff because that's what people want to hear about but he his message i'm sure will be we've got a game and we need the fans behind us because Ipswich still haven't won a league game at Portman Road this calendar year and there's a real opportunity against the Derby side that you know just just about stayed up last season changed manager and I've got off to a pretty sticky start so far so yeah what's your

38:09Ross Halls:feelings going in going into this one oh yeah I want to quickly mention I hope they don't like bring out a player didn't Sheffield Wednesday do that last year done a role just brought out a player in a press conference and it was so awkward, like, oh, who's at the door? And then they just welcomed him in. And yeah, hopefully Kieran McHale doesn't do that. Just somebody just, oh, someone's out over there. And then he comes in and it's, yeah, Marcelo Nunes. Oh, look, here he is. He's signed. Like Noel's house party.

38:36Stuart Watson:That's probably a reference that's lost on you back in the day. There would be a knock, knock, ring, ring. Oh, who's that at the door? And there would just be a surprise celebrity walked in. And then Mr. Blobby would chase them around all over the place. Maybe they could do that.

38:50Ross Halls:Yeah, that'd be good. So, yeah, idea for you, which is Town Media Team, if you're listening. So, there we go.

38:56Stuart Watson:Alan Partridge speaking into dictaphone.

38:58Ross Halls:Yeah, we do. Yeah, love that. But, no, all focus, though, Stu, as you mentioned, an important game against Derby County, who have never signed, never sort of talking point for this game. Just signed Lewis Travis, who was obviously Blackburn's captain, now reunites with John Eustace, who was his manager at Ewood Park. obviously was part of Town's team who got promoted so a little bit of bite there into that but yeah Derby they played in midweek against Burnley lost against them in the Carabao Cup 2-1 they haven't won a game just yet either so yeah this is a game on paper you think yeah Town should win but ooh Preston game was frustrating and at home form at the moment it's not good at all and Derby have got players Caden Jackson the factor as well

39:48Stuart Watson:Yeah, not starting games for them but I don't know how Caden will feel coming back here he very much enjoyed his time here and had a real connection with the fans so I don't think there'll be a point to prove feeling with him, I'm not sure he'd be one that would celebrate wildly if he scored but we know what he can bring in terms of pace certainly probably off the bench but Derby, yeah, last season struggled. Change of manager, John Eustace. You know, that was a bit of a surprise one that they managed to get him away from Blackburn, who were, you know, I think in the playoff spots at the time.

40:28Stuart Watson:Came to them, had a really good impact. They finished the season strongly. Was it a 0-0 draw against Stoke on the final day, which meant both of them stayed up and Luton went down. 11 signings this summer. looking at it the most significant one they spent about£7 million on Patrick Azjermann the American striker from Charlotte who Ipswich were mentioned in conjunction with at one stage he's injured at the moment so hasn't been able to play former Norwich man up front Carlton Morris who's a handful aggressive proper number nine who started the season quite well got a few goals already Fair few injuries at the back for Derby at the moment And they're conceding goals They lost 3-1 to Stoke on the opening day They lost 5-3 to Coventry in a ridiculous game If you look back at some of those goals They're not defending particularly well John Eustace was talking about It's not in our DNA We need to defend the box for our lives We need to do better on that front So crosses into the box could be an area that Ipswich will look to get some joy in in this game um yeah on paper it's a game they should be winning really Ross if I'm being honest yeah obviously I had to score a late

41:50Ross Halls:equaliser against Bristol City in the last league game um Carl Morris scored that goal they've also got in their defence to mention their defence they've got two ex-town players sorry it's me with my ex-blues fetish um Calum Elder and Matt Clarke as well so Ipswich town connections all over the pitch and Lewis Travis could potentially make his debut against town at Portland Road so that'll be interesting but um yeah let's do a game that town I wouldn't say it's a must win but they need to get a good result they need to get a positive result um the team is going to be interesting one um there was an unchanged team at Preston um but they didn't really play great and they didn't really create enough um it was a frustrating watch so I'm sure McKenna will be thinking at home, it's an opportunity to maybe start at POM, at Kater.

42:40Ross Halls:What do you reckon? Obviously, once again, we don't know about injury updates, but he probably needs to change the team a little bit.

42:47Stuart Watson:Yeah, it won't be unchanged again, I think, from Preston. I watched the game back. I wasn't there at Deepdale last weekend, but I watched the game back, obviously through the lens of knowing how it unfolds. So it's always slightly different. but a lot of huff and puff, wasn't it? And Kieran sort of recognised afterwards that the balance of the team at the attacking end of the pitch isn't quite there. I'd be surprised if Jack Clark starts again on the right. It's not really kind of worked out so far with a blend of that. I could see the logic behind it that you want Philogene, who's your£20 million asset, in his favourite position on the left and he looks better for it out there.

43:30Stuart Watson:that leaves you with a Jack Clark conundrum that right-sided role for Ipswich does afford a little bit more freedom to stay high and have a bit more space which I think Jack Clark is that sort of luxury player and that could work for him but it just wasn't sort of joined up was it so yeah Casey McIntyre or Chia Ogbena I think it would be one of those two on the right it was McIntyre who came on at deep down he looked a little bit rusty and he'd only just come in to be fair a couple of loose touches um smash that decent chance down the right side of the box over but um 11.5 million which have signed him for a reason um i would imagine he he will he will start um on the right hand side any other areas up for debate is this the time for jens kajusta to be unleashed for his second full debut at Ipswich Town.

44:32Stuart Watson:What do you reckon?

44:34Ross Halls:I think it is, Stu. I think it is. I think he's, once again, when he has come off the bench, it felt like he's made an impact. The pressing game was a hard one for him to get into the game, but he signed him for a reason to start games. And I think him and Azor, they want that connection to be built again. So I think this is the game for him at Portman Road in a game where Town need to get result. I'll start him. I feel sorry for Jack Taylor, because obviously I think he's not done anything wrong in the games he's played so far. But I think Jens Kewste is the man to start with. Has it all, Matasir in that midfield.

45:09Ross Halls:So, and that then gives that chat we just had, you know, a little while ago about players departing. Like even Ben Johnson, he's been starting all the games. But if Darnell fall on signs in time, do you start him? It's an interesting sort of debate.

45:26Stuart Watson:Cui Usta is a really I think it's going to be a tough decision for this weekend because it's probably a little sooner than Ipswich would like, he has had absolutely no pre-season at all at Napoli by all accounts didn't play any games and I don't think he's done an awful lot of training at all and this is a player who has got well publicised knee issues that he has to manage as well so ideally Ipswich probably would have got to the other side of this international break before considering starting him in football matches but this is a game that's got a little bit of pressure on it and he adds some I would say a significant step up in quality to this team so only the people that are working with him day in day out will know how big a risk it is we'll find out what Kieran McKenna has to say about him at the press conference tomorrow.

46:22Stuart Watson:But my gut feeling right now is that they'll be sorely tempted to chuck him in for this game.

46:30Ross Halls:Good thing is, obviously, they had a whole week on the training pitch to sort of rest a little bit, recover and do what they need to do. Maybe actually getting knocked out of the cup was a good thing because then they've had more time on the pitch. I know they'd rather not lose on penalties against Bromley, but at least have another week to sort of prepare for this game when obviously Derby have had to travel up to Burnley, then come back and then now got to travel to Porton Road this weekend.

46:55Stuart Watson:The only other area of debate is probably right back, isn't it? Going into this game, as we've mentioned, we've talked about Ben Johnson's start at the first three games. His best performance has probably been at left back in the second half against Bromley when he came on and was a real attacking threat. The fact that Ipswich have gone out and about to sign Darnell Furlong speaks volumes that Kieran McKenna feeling that he's defensively not probably suited to this system, that they want someone who's a kind of a right back slash centre back in the mould of Axel Twenzebi, which Furlong is. Whether Furlong will sign in time to play, he'll have to be registered by midday tomorrow.

47:36Stuart Watson:That's very much possible from what I understand. He started the first, you know, he's a regular starter for West Brom at the start of the season. So he's up to speed. Knowing some of his teammates shouldn't be an issue for reasons that we've talked about. You know, he'd have Dara O'Shea immediately to his left and Alex Palmer behind him. So that may negate any kind of fear sometimes of chucking someone straight into a new team. So it's not impossible that he goes straight into the team. Darnell Furlong knows the championship obviously inside out as well if not maybe Ashley Young who I think has had some really shown his glass in all of his cameos so far so there will be a change at right back one way or another I'm pretty sure of that

48:27Ross Halls:And then sort of the 10 role is an interesting one because obviously Sammy Smoddix has been the main man in that position I've touted him to be the top goal scorer for town, MVP, but kind of Chaplin's impressed when he's come off the bench. Tube Akpom can play there. What are you going to do, Stu?

48:47Stuart Watson:I think Akpom, given they've got options, that will be another cameo appearance for him. He's another one that hasn't had, didn't play any pre-season games for Ajax. I think he's trained a little bit more than Jens, but there's probably no need to throw him into the starting XI at the moment, given the options. I've talked a bit about how I think Connor Chaplin is a bit more of an attacking glue for this team. He's obviously a link to the past in terms of the more functioning Ipswich Town teams. He can play those little first-time passes, drops into little pockets. But on the flip side of that, Ipswich need goals at the moment and Sami Schmodix is a proven goal scorer and if I look back at the three games so far, he had a really good chance against Birmingham on the opening night where he was gifted a chance on the edge of the box, wasn't able to hit the target with that one, struck the post against Southampton almost got in behind up at Preston last weekend from a really good Matasiwa pass I think you need Sammy Schmoddix in this team as a goal threat and let him really bed into his favourite central number 10 slot.

50:04Stuart Watson:Big, big fan of Connor Chaplin, but I'd be going with Sammy Schmodix for this one. Still hasn't scored at Portman Road as an Ipswich Town player, so maybe this weekend is the day when that finally happens.

50:17Ross Halls:Yeah, that's incredible. Yeah, he just loves scoring away from home. Yeah, he's obviously scored at Portman Road many times before for other clubs. But yeah, let's do. Let's talk about predictions. I think we sort of know that the rest of the team is slotting into one. But yeah, this game, Tam need to get a good result. Do you think Tam will get their first win of the season and their first win in the league at Porton Road in 2025?

50:43Stuart Watson:Yes, I do. And I feel reasonably confident about it. John Eustis is a good manager, but I think Derby have got some injury issues at the moment. Several defenders out, they've looked shaky they've conceded some goals and they're not offering a great deal going forwards I had I had a look at it they're the lowest in the championship in terms of xg at the moment they're lowest in the championship in terms of shots per game um Ipswich haven't given up for all the talk of Ipswich not creating enough and scoring enough they haven't conceded that many chances the opposition Birmingham for all their spells on top didn't create loads um Southampton had that spell on top in the first half of Portman Road.

51:28Stuart Watson:But again, not loads of clear-cut chances. Preston obviously just sat on their penalty lead last weekend. So defensively, I think, you know, bar the odd moment, like the Jacob Greaves penalty, they've looked pretty solid. So I'm fairly confident they can limit Derby and there's enough quality there. And I know we've said it going into games against Bromley and Preston as well. this team will improve and I think they'll get this one done, yeah

51:59Ross Halls:Okay You want a scoreline?

52:04Stuart Watson:I'm somewhere between a 2-0 and a 3-0 Ross, but I'll err on the side of caution and I'll say 2-0 and do you know what? I'm going to back that man Sammy Schmoddix to get his first Portman Road goal so I'll chalk him up as first goal scorer

52:22Ross Halls:Okay, I was going to go similar scoreline. I'm going to go 3-0. I want goals at Portland Road and I want sort of records to be broken. So yeah, Semis Monarchs to score

52:31Stuart Watson:and be the first goal scorer as well.

52:33Ross Halls:His first goal at Portland Road. Alex Palmer to get his first clean sheet because sadly he's not had a town clean sheet yet in terms of competitive fixture and a town obviously to win their first home game at Portland Road in 2025 in the league. So 3-0, 2-0. some of these monocs to score the first town goal and that'll be a very positive result going into the deadline day and going into the international break as well Stu because football stops for a second again because now international breaks it.

53:05Stuart Watson:Amazing how the mood can quickly change isn't it a real sense of anxiety off the back of Preston last week and all quiet on the transfer front and then in the space of you know a few days we could talk about however many signings through the door, potentially a win against Derby, a little bit of time on the training pitch for Kieran McKenna to really start all the uncertainty put to rest around transfers and then a top coach really being able to get his teeth into everything and then a mouth-watering home game Friday night under the lights against Sheffield United to restart. So, yeah, I'm not a massive one for the soap opera of Transfer Deadline Day.

53:48Stuart Watson:It's a big part of our job and I get it. People are excited by it. But for me, it's the football. For me, it's the football always that will excite me most. So I'm looking forward to getting back to Portman Road and hopefully seeing a much improved Ipswich Town performance because the Southampton one was pretty good, lest we not forget last time out against Portman Road. There was a lot to like in that game. If they can reproduce that performance, they'll have no problems on Saturday.

54:13Ross Halls:Yeah, if you are going to the game, enjoy. If not, follow coverage with us. We'll be there to do our normal stick. But yeah, obviously stay tuned for all the other transfer news we'll bring you when it breaks. And obviously deadline day will be a busy day. I'm sure we'll bring an after dark podcast. Although it won't be as late as normal. But the deadline is 7pm. But hopefully town will get their business done. We get the phone call. We've got no business coming to happen. Maybe they'll get it done by midday. And then we can just enjoy the rest of Monday. But we shall see Stu.

54:45Stuart Watson:we shall see yeah um we can still do the whispery after dark one if you like it feels it feels traditional doesn't it um seven o 'clock is a far more civilized time to close the transfer window

54:59Ross Halls:um but yeah it will feel strange not being sort of set up at midnight dissecting it all um but

55:05Stuart Watson:yeah we'll let's see let's see what happens over these next few days but it's all happening for rip switch town and we'll try and cover it all for you as quickly and as accurately more importantly

55:15Ross Halls:as we possibly can indeed my friend well thanks so much joining me thanks very well listening have you enjoyed me and stew's two-man pod um this morning afternoon evening whenever you're listening to this and uh we've got to plug our sponsors stew let you sort of mention the first newest one uh molecular for all your car cleaning products i haven't got the promo read to hand

55:38Stuart Watson:apologies to the good people at molecular um but uh i believe they provide you with all uh the products to clean your cars your agricultural vehicles i saw that got mentioned as well um based in layston um give them a look please um because we as we say it's nice having some suffolk sponsors at the moment the other one of which ross is stardust spirits there you go and also

56:04Ross Halls:KOA 10 for Maleklia. Getting closer. Getting closer. I'm going to have to just have a session where I just sit down and just say it over and over again, just get it in my head. But yeah, very sorry for those great people over there in Maleklia in Leyston. But Stardust Spirits, good old them over there, they're obviously with great spirits. I've still got mine.
