In short

Ipswich Town’s 5-0 home demolition of Sheffield United at Portman Road, with discussion of how the win came after a competitive first half, the international-break effect, and standout performers plus squad/bench depth.

Guests

Stuart Watson and Alex Jones (both Ipswich-focused football commentators/analysts). They discuss tactics and player performances throughout.

Key claims

  • Ipswich weren’t at “maximum potential” yet, but got the needed result; the international break seemed to help Ipswich more than Sheffield United.
  • Sheffield United’s manager Ruben Sayers was sacked shortly after, and the hosts argue Ipswich’s second-half control ended any comeback.
  • Jadon Philogene’s hat-trick is framed as a confidence turning point after a difficult, injury-hit Premier League start at Ipswich.

Notable examples

  • Philogene’s goals: a bottom-corner finish, a “work through three players” second, and a left-footed third.
  • George Hurst’s first open-play goal and Jack Clarke’s impact (including a goal and an own-goal involvement).
  • Darnell Furlong’s solid defensive debut at right back (tackles, physicality, and an assist).
  • Azor Matusiwa’s midfield shielding and passing; Marcelino Núñez’s attacking play as a sub; Sindra Wala Egeli’s energetic 19-year-old debut.

0:07Hello everybody, it's me Roscoe and welcome to the latest Kings of Anglia Itteristown podcast sponsored by Stardust Spirits and Molecule. Close enough, but two very good sponsors, local companies in Suffolk, so check them out. We'll bring a bit more about them later on, a bit of promo with their codes and all that jazz. But yes, I'm in the hot seat once again, as Hefe is in Spain sunning up and enjoying a five-star performance from Itchwich Town. I'm joined by two five-star men in Stuart Watson and Alex Jones, and hopefully we'll bring you a five-star show. Give us a five-star rating if you fancy, ladies and gentlemen.

0:50Stuart Watson, my friend, always good to see you. How's things?

0:54Stuart Watson:Very good, thank you. Always better after a performance and a win like that. I think we all enjoyed our weekends that little bit more, didn't we? So I do like Friday nights under the lights at Portman Road. A little bit of extra something in the air, isn't there? Certainly preferable to those Sunday lunchtime kickoffs, which can be a bit soporific by comparison. So, yeah, let's get stuck into it. Good stuff. Indeed, yeah. Of course, it's been a few days removed, and I hope everyone has enjoyed their weekends after a town win. Finally, it's been a while since we've been able to have a podcast, AJ, to discuss a town win, especially at Porton Road.

1:28How are you? Yeah, I'm good. It's been a few weeks, obviously. I'm going to factor in pre-season since we've been able to talk about town win because we have spoken about pre-season wins. Yeah, we still have. It's been a longer time since we've spoken about a competitive win. That would have been the Coventry game in the FA Cup. It's been a longer time since we've spoken. Oh, God, yeah, I forgot about that. It's been a longer time since we've spoken about a home win, which was, I'm going to get this one right, which was Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup. We can count that. And it's been even longer since we can talk about a home league win the first time in 2025.

2:07It's September, but they've done it. And yeah, that should make for at least a good podcast. Yes, because yeah, it has been difficult. It's not too hard for us to do a podcast, but it's been trying to get yourself ready to discuss defeat after defeat, but we're here to discuss. It's just Town 5, Sheffield United, nil. So sit back and relax, ladies and gentlemen, whatever you're doing. If you're driving, then do not sit back and relax. Just enjoy your drive. But yes, just your opening thoughts on the win. We've got a few different segments. We're going to hear from Kieran McKenna. We're going to hear from the hat-trick hero, Jane and Philogene as well.

2:44But yeah, your opening thoughts.

2:46Stuart Watson:Needed that. I think we went into it saying, just get a win. just get those first three points it could be scrappy it can be scruffy it can be a goal in off the backside just get this season up and running um we're in this gelling process this strange little crossover period from a lot of emotional exits some a bit of money spent a new squad it's going to take a bit of time kieran mckenna said going into this one we're not going to be at our maximum potential going into friday night um so we just wanted the results so to get the performance and the goals to go with it was a nice little bonus, wasn't it?

3:25It was indeed. AJ, have they gelled? Is it too soon to say? And obviously, yes, Jeff United have sacked their manager since then. So, Kieran McKenna's now. We have to look back, potentially, on how many times Town have seen the opposition manager get sacked. Because that's happened a few times. Have Town gelled more so? Yeah. Clearly, this is a team that's been massively helped by the international break. At the end of the day, we spoke about how it would help Ipswich. It would help every team, by logic, to the point that it would cancel out. But it seemingly did absolutely nothing for Sheffield United.

3:59If anything, they regressed over that break. But Ipswich looked so much better, didn't they? Let's be honest, in terms of the performance levels, still things that need work, which is why you can't say, have they gelled fully? No, absolutely not. and that's why those things will still need to come over the coming days, weeks, and possibly a couple of months to get up to that full speed. But yeah, needed this. And as you say, spells the end of Ruben Sayers at Sheffield United. He got sacked yesterday. That news kind of broke, I believe, on Saturday. And I said in pre-season, it was right at the end of actually the last championship season, my early hot take would be that Chris Wilder would be the pantomime villain for Ipswich Town in the 2025-26 season.

4:41and that prediction went out the window very quickly when he was sacked. But it might be back on. I think it is going to be back on. Oh, interesting. Stu, before we get into obviously Town running away with it and hammering the Blades, it was a competitive sort of first half. I did sort of turn up. So we don't want to sort of gloss over that because, yeah, the first half, it was a competitive battle.

5:04Stuart Watson:1-0 up at the break and it had sort of Derby vibes about it in terms of We got to halftime against Derby, deserved to be in front, probably. And then it was a case of, right, see it out, get that first win now. And they didn't. They gave away two poor goals. And it's amazing how quickly the mood, the confidence, the momentum of football matches turns on goals. And we all know how that sort of panned out with Derby's antics. And, OK, it's just got the late equaliser, but it was a bit of a flat feeling coming away from that one. So, again, got to half-time in this and thought, still a fair bit of work to do here.

5:47Stuart Watson:Ibswich had the better chances, no doubt about it. Cooper had made two or three good saves, one from McAteer, one where he flicked a cross off the head of Atpom, one from Filagene as well. Ibswich finally got the goal with Filagene, rifling into the bottom corner. But Sheffield United had had spells. I thought they'd pressed well. McKenna referenced that afterwards. they got into some good areas particularly down their left hand side with Louis Barry former Ipswich low knee Burrows at left back was getting forward well so they got into some good areas down that side the final ball wasn't quite there for them but I think there was enough evidence to say that they were they were very much in this game and I was thinking come on Ipswich stay focused stay concentrated keep things tight at one end and then kill a second you need that I kept saying to Alex they need a second here just to kill this off and um thankfully this time that's uh how things played out very much so yeah AJ I always like to ask this question but how were you feeling at half time then one year up um obviously live on sky under lights anything can happen um I don't think many people would have predicted um four goals and a five nil win no how was I feeling at half time quite similar to the derby game where I was quite confident of Ipswich going through and seeing it out.

7:10But then I have the concern, based on the derby game, from what we saw from that match where Pound, I think, played well in kind of quite extended spells in the game and you just don't get the second killer off, as she said. And then they conceded at two of the worst times and were probably, let's be honest, given the time of the goal, pretty fortunate to escape with a draw despite some dodgy refereeing, let's say, in that game. And then by 51 minutes, it was totally the opposite, wasn't it? And I think that at 2-0, I felt that that was always going to be it. I didn't have any kind of fears that Sheffield United were going to get back into it.

7:50You could see the heads drop at that point. That is a team low on confidence. Look, you can talk about fortune in the first goal. The fact that it's a pass from, was it Furlong's? MacAteer. MacAteer's pass, that was it. who bounced off Matos, I believe, and ended up flying literally from one end of the pitch to the other for Philogene to score. No kind of fluke about this one, even though I think Stu and I were both kind of quite frustrated at the fact that it looked like Philogene had taken a really good opportunity and fluffed it by working the ball into loads of bodies and thinking, oh, he's overplayed it again.

8:29No, he hadn't overplayed it. He shut us both up by working it through three players and then curling it past Cooper's left post. And at 2-0, that was going to be that. Yeah, and that's a good little segue, AJ. Thank you very much. Talk about Jalen Finerjean because a hat-trick hero. He's obviously a frustrated start to life at Itchertown from obviously signing in January during the Premier League time and obviously a struggling side. Had some injuries. But AJ, Stu, go for you, my friend, Stu. He stepped up and showed what he's all about. And obviously, we spent a lot of money on him. Do you want to sort of ask him in his glory?

9:12Stuart Watson:Yeah. Let's be honest. He's been wholly unconvincing, certainly given the price tag, £20 million, albeit in very difficult circumstances. And I think we have to be fair. A, he arrived any kind of mid-season switch is always difficult for a player that didn't have a lot of minutes under his belt. He'd had the odd game for Aston Villa in the first half of the season. I think he started in the Bayern Munich game in the Champions League early on, but came to Ipswich pretty sort of rusty. Then you factor in that he's arriving at the most difficult part of the season for Ipswich, who their early season adrenaline rush had started to fade.

9:56Stuart Watson:There was a few injuries kicking in. I think his debut was the Man City game, and then Liverpool the game after that. So talk about baptism of fire. And then Wes Burns goes and gets injured, season-ending injury at Anfield, which meant Ipswich suddenly had no right-wingers. Ogbeno already out for the season. Burns then out for the season. There's no doubt in my mind that Kieran McKenna had always seen him as a left-sider. Jadon's on the record as saying that's where he prefers to play. It's where he's played for England under-21s. But he had to play him on the right. So he's out of position in a struggling team against world-class opposition with very few minutes under his belt.

10:37Stuart Watson:Is it any wonder in hindsight that he looked a little bit lost at times last season? I think we're all saying he looks a little bit lightweight, didn't really sort of fit into the system. I thought the injury that he got at Chelsea that ended his season kind of was a summary of that. It was like a 50-50 block tackle that he didn't really commit to. And he ends up getting injured off the back of it. so yeah I think that it's not exactly like he'd won over the Ipswich fans going into this season but we saw some glimpses in pre-season back on the left what he's capable of the Aberdeen game he was excellent got the two goals but it was off off the ball work rate that really impressed me the most from that gets a little another little injury setback going into the season and then he goes and does what he does on Friday night, which I think is going to do absolute wonders for his confidence and absolute wonders for the belief of the fans behind him as well.

11:36Stuart Watson:So hopefully this is a real turning point for him because that was an outstanding hat-trick, wasn't it? Each goal better than the last. Very much so. AJ, we're going to go over to you to get your thoughts on Jalen Finchier, but let's hear from the man himself speaking to the press after the game. Let's see what he had to say on his hat-trick. Yeah, special performance For me, got a hat-trick, got to keep going, working on it in training and just keep producing on and off the pitch. When was your last hat-trick? At what level? Can you remember? No, I can't remember. I can't remember at all. No, I can't remember.

12:07I don't think it's a bad hat-trick, but that was a particularly good one. I mean, that finish must have delighted you. Yeah, yeah. Like I said, in training, doing extras, just practising, practising so it can work off in the game. I just got to keep doing it. How did you practise that with? Give us an idea of what goes on at Playford Road. I practised with Shawnee and I practised with Junior. like the attacking coaches. Which one was the pick of the goals? Probably the last one. Because it was off your left? Yeah, of course, 100%. And when the second one goes in, do you then start to think, hey, this is my night?

12:39You obviously knew you were playing well. You're looking for the hat-trick at that stage, aren't you? Yeah, of course. When I scored the second goal, I said to myself, OK, let me get another one now, make it a hat-trick, and then go from there, yeah. So he was here in terms of family to watch this for you tonight? My uncle and his friends there. What have the boys been like? Have they all signed the ball? That's the tradition? Is that why you're walking off with it? I ain't signed it yet. I don't think anyone's going to sign it. I just want to keep it fresh. Any idea where it's going to go? Yeah, I'd probably give it to my mum.

13:03She'll keep it safe for me. What did the gaffer say when you came off? I saw you laugh at something that Kieran said to you as you wandered off and had a warm embrace. Yeah, he said, what did he say again? He said something about, I knew he was going to enjoy playing here. I played for the road. Yeah, that's what he said. Did you feel that performance was coming? I mean, it was obviously difficult the second half of last season when you came in in the Premier League, you had the injury problem, you had a good pre-season, then got another setback? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I had to just keep my head down, focus, work hard, and then it all comes together.

13:28You obviously feel you can really contribute this season for Ipswich Town. Yeah, 100%. Like I said, just keep working hard, contribute for them, contribute for me, and then, yeah, keep going. What about the atmosphere tonight as well? Yeah, the atmosphere is always good, though, even when we're losing, so just keep it like that, please. Do you have to prove people wrong or prove a point to people off the way last season went for you? No, I think we've just got to keep our heads and just play our game. It's all going to work out in the end. What about the performance in general? And you needed that result, didn't you?

13:52Yeah, to give us a boost. Yeah, I think we're doing well. Like I said, give us a boost. Now we can just keep going from there. Do you feel you can really kick on as a side and rack up a few wins? Yeah, 100%. 100%. The way how we're playing now, the team's Jalen together. Yeah, we're going to go somewhere. All right, then. There's Jalen Philogene on his hat-trick. I think he'll let his football do the talking going forward. But very, you know, just sounds like a nice, just humble lad. and yeah, I'm sure his mum will look after that match ball for him. AJ, my friend, he's proven some of the doubters wrong, but he's got to back this up, hasn't he, Jadon?

14:26Because yeah, great to score a hat-trick, but then the next game, you know, obviously he won't score another hat-trick. Well, you never know. But yeah, thoughts on him as a whole? Well, writing off Jadon's hat-trick chances against Blackburn, early doors there, Ross. Yeah, I'm kind of in a similar boat to Stu where last season I'm quite happy to literally just write that off in its entirety. And there were times where I kind of thought, well, you know, you are a player that's worth£20 million. Can you offer a bit more? But you've got to think about his age. Let's be honest, a lack of experience at the top level.

15:03He's making the same step up as so many other Ipswich players in the Premier League. Just having to do it in much harder circumstances, let's be honest, without that kind of pre-season behind him and all the time to bed in and gel. So kind of when you can reflect on the season that we did over the summer, being able to look at that and kind of say, it's water under the bridge, that was okay. But that meant that he, like some other players in the team, it should be said, had something to prove this season. And it's kind of swung side to side. There have been games where the Southampton one, I think I gave him man of the match.

15:36I thought he was excellent. I thought that it was just that final ball that wasn't quite there, but I thought he was threatening, fun to watch. He was doing some of the hard work as well. There were bits where he'd come up against Taylor Harwood-Bellis, big, tall England centre-back, and he'd just ease him off the ball and stuff like that. Really, really good. And then there were games like the Derby one where I thought he was really, really poor. So I kind of was in this middle zone thinking, I know that there's that quality and potential there, but being able to get it out and deliver, that seems to be the problem.

16:08Clearly isn't at the moment, is it? because, yeah, that was an incredible hat-trick. My favourite of them had to be the second, I think. The third was a really nice finish on his left, but the second, given that I think everyone thought in that stadium that he'd overplayed it and done too much to then take the ball round all those bodies and fire in from the edge of the area. Yeah, that was a really special goal. So, look, Ipswich need to find a settled attack. It's not going to be him week in, week out. There will have to be rotation with Jack Clark or other players who might end up playing on the left.

16:39the Smolik's at times. I don't know. But this is now a chance for Jadon Philogene, who will start at Blackburn, of course, 100%, to really nail down the majority of these minutes as the first choice player. He's the one that, after all, Kieran McKenna wanted to sign last summer. They didn't get it done, so they ended up moving and signing Jack Clark instead. Then go get Jadon Philogene in January. He's McKenna's pick, I think, to be perfectly honest. That's how I see it in my eyes. And with that in mind, now that he's scored a hat-trick, now that he can kick on, he's best placed to really go and make that position his own and get the bulk of the minutes on the left wing.

17:18Nice one. Let's hear then from Kieran McKenna. AJ, segues galore from you. Love that. This is K-Dog. Thoughts on Jadon Philogene, the hat trick hero. Let's go.

17:28Stuart Watson:Word on Jadon. He arrived at a difficult moment midway through the Premier League. What's that going to do for him tonight, that hat trick? Yeah, a real boost for him on an individual level, no doubt about that. He arrived late, was playing on the right side, which we know he prefers to play on the left, but we had some big injuries as well on the right side in the Premier League season last year, so he had to play all his minutes on that side. He's been working really hard and we've been working really hard with him through pre-season into the start of the season, especially with the balance with him and Jack, maybe We've been more natural wingers on that side and Leafs' role for us and how we can try and make that effective and add another string to a ball and get the best out of the players.

18:15Everyone's been working really hard on that process, so big credit to Jadon, big credit to the other boys in that sort of left-side unit and to the staff as well. For him tonight, there's no doubt it would be a big boost to his confidence. We know his qualities, what he can bring. It's, of course, his best night for the club so far. and he's a humble guy so he'll work hard. He'll get ready for next week. He will indeed. Stu, there's other goal scorers in this game. George Hurst with his first open play goal and Jack Clark in back-to-back games now, which is good. In a way, he's involved in three goals at Porton Road in the last three games because of the own goal as well.

18:59But do you want to talk about those two goals? because Mark Cooper should have done better. Definitely the George Hurst goal. But yeah, thoughts on those?

19:07Stuart Watson:Yeah, the Hurst goal was a slightly odd one, wasn't it? The way he sort of looked like he'd taken it a bit too wide. He'd gone around the goalkeeper, taken it a bit wide. I was thinking cut it back, but he goes for goal, which is his right-ups, which are in a comfortable position in the game at that stage. He's not got an open goal, an open play goal yet. this season so he goes for it and it goes kind of through the through the keeper's legs doesn't it and he maybe gets away with it a little bit but that will hopefully boost his confidence we're talking about confidence boosters um i'm just trying to think now it feels like a few days ago since that went in that that goal was that uh matter see were involved in that was matter see were involved for the fifth goal wasn't it where he wins the ball back sort of high up the pitch with a brilliant standing tackle sort of snuffs out a counter attack early and then ipswich turn counter into counter and Jack Clark bundles his way through the box through perseverance and another one that sort of goes underneath the goalkeeper with the finish so yeah you're right that sort of builds upon us two two and two off the bench for Jack Clark who that was the goal that Kieran McKenna said pleased him the most really because it'd be quite easy for Jack Clark to be feeling a little bit sorry for himself that he's seen the man that's in his favourite position go and get a hat-trick, but he came on and looked really lively off the bench, didn't he?

20:34Stuart Watson:He put himself about. It wasn't just the mesmeric dribbling that we're used to seeing from Jack Clark. He really put in a shift off the ball and was winning the ball back. That was good to see. And just the subs in general all made such a big impact. It was hard not to feel sorry for Sheffield United, wasn't it? They're down on their luck. The game was going away from them. As Alex says, the shoulders were drooped. The body language wasn't great. And then Ipswich turned to their bench. I think the first two subs were Schmodix and... Help me out here, boys. I'll get it. Schmodix and Nunez both come on 63 for Cuyusta and Atpom.

21:16Stuart Watson:So that's one championship golden boot winner replacing another in the number 10 role at that stage. And then a triple sub on 71, Jack Clark, Valet Aghelli and Ivan Azon all coming on for Philogene, McAteer and Hurst. So we talked about it when the team sheets came out. We talked a lot post-transfer window, didn't we, about is this squad stronger than the one that Ipswich got promoted with before. On paper, it looks very good. But seeing it there in team sheet, looking at that bench for the first time and seeing those options, seeing those five attacking players all come on for Ipswich as a reminder of the attacking weaponry at Kieran McKenna's disposal.

21:58Stuart Watson:And they all really enjoyed themselves and helped Ipswich kind of ruthlessly put this game to bed, didn't they? Very much so, yeah. I'm sure the Sheffield United player, they look up and go, oh, we're losing by this scoreline. They look up and, oh, bloody hell, got more of those players coming on to beat us more. So, yeah, what we're going to do, boys, we're going to have a little chat about different individuals. This definitely wasn't an individual performance. This was a team effort from Itchwich Town. But I've got a few pitches I'm going to just flash up. We're going to start with one man who maybe went under the radar, but there's a lot of town fans praising him, and that is Darnell Furlong.

22:34God's sake, Ross, not that difficult. But, yeah, AJ, thoughts on Furlong's debut? Very solid, assured, right back, just solid. Yeah, I mean, that's kind of what we expected from him And when he signed, wasn't it? I don't think you're going to get a right back that has kind of the glitz and glamour, lots of kind of attacking play and that kind of thing. And there's bits to his game that will need to come. I've spoken about this a little bit over the weekend or after the game on Friday, rather, where it's kind of looking at playing out from the back, a little bit of stuff in possession. But as a right back, especially a right back in this system, the biggest and most important thing is what you're doing out of possession.

23:19and Darnell Furlong ticked every single box. He was strong into tackles. He was physical and determined. He got an assist, of course, was probably one of the easier assists that I think he's going to get, but still counts an assist that will go on his name. It's a weird one actually looking back at it because I think like a lot of fans, when he signed, there was a bit of confusion about, well, you've got Ben Johnson there and you've got Ashley Young there. why have we got and harry clark of course got to get him as well what why does another right back come in furlong to me is a little bit more in the axle to anzebe mold in terms of his defensive work as well um he's just rock solid isn't he that was the main thing to say um steps and improvement will come down the line in terms of what he's able to do in possession again as i said there were times where he'd maybe float a ball down the line there it was just not quite on the same wavelength of some of the players in front of him.

24:15But once that starts to click, and that will in time, because he still needs time to play with his new teammates and everyone else around him, yeah, you're going to see a really good player there. I think it helps as well. There's method in the madness, isn't it, with signing West Brom's back line, with having Alex Palmer and Dara O'Shea in there as well. He's played a lot of minutes with Dara O'Shea, and I think he might have done with Palmer as well. I need to go back there and check. But they all know each other. That will only speed up this process of bedding players in. And it doesn't hurt that that West Brom team are pretty damn good defensively.

24:52Yeah, very much so. And of course, he actually scored against Town of the Orthorns. Stu, do you want to say any more about Dianna?

24:57Stuart Watson:Yeah, I think the furlong signing, you're right. When it happens, you think, why right back? It's left back that Ipswich are short on with the Townsend injury. Why have they gone and signed another one? They've ultimately ended up with four, with Ashley Young, Ben Johnson, and Harry Clarke to come back from injury as well and Furlong. But Kieran McKenna has obviously looked at it, the Ipswich conceded a lot of goals, not only in their Premier League season, but even in the Championship promotion season, it was a case of kind of we'll score more than you at times. And he's obviously looked at this and thought there needs to be a bit more defensive solidity.

25:33Stuart Watson:I think this is a kind of system-led right-back signing that Ben Johnson has qualities, no doubt about it. He did some good things in the Premier League. This is a player dropping down to the Championship for the first time in his career. But he's better going forwards than he is defensively. And that has a whole impact on the team. Leif Davis is the player that he is. He's crucial to Ipswich, getting forwards, creating chances. And for that to happen, you need a right-back who wants to tuck in and defend first and foremost. And I'm not sure Ben Johnson is that. Harry Clarke, obviously, we don't know.

26:09Stuart Watson:you know it's going to be a while before he's back to where he's at um injury wise um so i think that's why they've done it and i think that we saw some very early proof of that with furlong you're right solid is the word to probably describe him in this game um and it frees up leaf davis to be able to go forwards and then it's about getting that left-sided balance right this is all about balance and chemistry when we're talking about the gelling process there have been times where I think both Philogene and Clark are kind of paint on your boots wingers that end up occupying the same spaces that Leif Davis wants to get into and Kieran McKenna talked about it post-match they've been working a lot on that this summer about finding a way to get that balance right because Nathan Broadhead was a kind of inside forward when he played that role and he would tuck in and that would allow Davis to get forward on the overlap it can work with a Philogene slash Clark, but they need to work on it.

27:06Stuart Watson:And interesting that Philogene referenced Junior Stanislavs in there, the new coach at Ipswich, a former left winger himself. So that will probably help with the likes of Philogene and Clark, but I thought they got the balance of the team looked a lot better with Furlong tucking in at right back. Davis and Philogene dovetailed a lot better in this game. Those are the things that we're looking for going forwards for Ipswich. Very much so. And I want to stick with you, too, because you spoke to this man in international break or for international break, an exclusive interview with him. And that is the midfield.

27:38Obviously, Jens, we love him. But Azor Matasiwa, here he is battling for the ball. Let's praise him because he just, every game he just gets better and better. And he said in your chat that he hasn't got to that level yet. He had a tough, obviously, debut at Birmingham, but since then he's sort of stepped up and he's mustered.

27:57Stuart Watson:Yeah, I think he's got better and better game by game, hasn't he? and I thought he was outstanding in this match. Villagin will get the headlines, rightly so, but such an integral role in this team, isn't it? Someone who's shielding the back four, who's starting attacks, who needs to be comfortable in receiving possession in tight areas. I really like him as a character off the pitch from that interview and I think those that read it said that they felt a bit of extra connection with him and I think that's important that people get that emotional connection with with these new players as personalities but as a player as well he's growing and growing on people how many times did he step in and um you know the old adage about you shouldn't good defenders shouldn't come off the pitch covered in mud because you know that that's a sign that you're making too many last-ditch tackles how many times did he make perfect standing tackles where he was just in the right place at the right time, stepped in, took the ball, stayed on his feet, came away from it, played a pass, got Ipswich Town going in the opposite direction.

29:04Stuart Watson:As I say, that was very much the case for the fifth goal. Yeah, I'm really encouraged by him and that midfield partnership of him and Kuyusta looks really good, doesn't it? Yeah, it does, AJ. Fellow Dutchman, I'm sure you've been impressed by us all yeah not dutch but thank you lived there um yeah i think he's been excellent and as you say the way that he's improved i don't want to look into kind of stats generated ratings a lot but i think it does just paint a really easy picture that passes the eye test you look at one of the ratings on that i've got it called fopmob um 6.2 against birmingham of the sand was was a really tough one goes up to 7.1 against Southampton 7.5 against Preston and Derby 7.9 against Sheffield United the stats generate those numbers and it shows that there's a consistent improvement there the it passes the eye test as well doesn't it because we've sat here and we've said the same things he does all the right bits um I think that obviously on the pitch like we've said already he's just getting to this point where he's ticking every single box um physically and And kind of suiting the role, I think that, as I've mentioned before, on the pitch, I think he's going to be an upgrade on Sam Morsey in terms of what he can offer in that kind of sense.

30:22The fact that he's 27 as well, there's so much to like with Azul Matasiwa. And I think that the midfield there is going to grow. And you know what the other bit I really liked was as well. There's a clip that I put out where he's on the pitch, and I think they've just changed Cajusta for Nunez. and you can see the smile on Matasiba's face when he sees Marcelino Nunez come on. He's like, wow, this is the levels that we're able to bring on when we're 3-4-0 up to add to a game. Yeah, right character, right personality, right player, every single aspect.

31:00Stuart Watson:He's a bit different to Morsi, isn't he? I think Sam is someone who could carry the ball more than Azor. I don't think you're ever going to see Azul suddenly eat up five, 10 yards off the pitch and shrug people off and get you up the pitch in the way that Sam Morsi does. I don't think you're going to see him chip in with as many goals as Sam Morsi. I might be wrong. I think he, you know, if the interview he did with me, he talks about knowing what I am and not trying to be anything different when he's got these big moves with big money. Don't try and suddenly be something that you're not. He's a holding midfielder who wins the ball, who gives it to other players.

31:40Stuart Watson:But he can pick a pass as well. That's the way he progresses the play, not through sort of running with the ball, but through line-breaking passes. And, yeah, that comes from his Ajax background. If you come through the Ajax youth system, you look after the football. It's an obsession with possession. Then he's gone to France and dealt with the physical side of the game and the intensity side of it. and all roads have ultimately led to England where I think stylistically he's a really good fit for championship football and obviously Ipswich feel when he feels that ultimately Premier League is where his skill set is going to be best based.

32:16Stuart Watson:So really encouraged by the early signs of Azor Matasia as a man, as a player and really look forward to seeing him grow over the coming months. Yeah, I put a sort of hot take on him scoring the first goal in this game and yeah, I don't think he will score many goals but he will obviously be involved and creating chances and stuff. But, yeah, really impressed by Zor so far. Just seems like another humble lad in this squad and another sort of character I'm sure Kieran McKenna brought in because it just fits the team. AJ, you mentioned it. Yeah, what an opportunity, what a good sub to bring on in the midfield with Marcelino Nunes because, yeah, his first appearance in the Townshire, he really scored at the end there with a free kick.

32:58It sort of set up nicely for him, but in the end it just went wide. but yeah, first thoughts on him? Yeah, good. That would have ruined my report that I'd pre-written about 10 minutes before that free kick went in. I was thinking, I don't want to have to rewrite my five-star town headline. But it would have been really good for him, wouldn't it? Get his town career off to a real flyer. He arrives at Portman Road with a hell of a lot of hype, but also maybe a bit of a point to prove with the fact that he's had all, And understandably, and possibly, if not probably quite wrongly, these comments that have come from his former employers, let's say, that he needed to shut some of those up.

33:41Now, this is very early days. He came on with about half an hour to play on the pitch. What I've seen from him so far, very, very impressed. Offer something else to the other two midfielders, I think is the first thing to say. That kind of attacking drive that he has, he's not a number six. He's not going to sit back. He's the kind of player that if you're starting with Kuyusta and Matasiwa and you want to be able to bring someone on, you have that bit of X factor in one of those deep line midfield roles, that is Marcelino Nunez. And we saw that with some of the times that he was getting forwards, the way that he linked up so well.

34:13Again, hasn't had a lot of time to play with his new teammates, but seems to know them all very well, seems to gel very quickly into the squad. The ball sticks to him like glue. He doesn't lose it. We've seen some of the running already. we've seen the ground that he covers he's had a couple of shots I think in that one, there was one that he kind of scooped quite far wide in stoppage time but also shows again that he has that ambition to take aim from distance and then the free kick as well which wasn't that far away and it is really good to have a free kick taker because in the time I've covered town, I'm not sure I've seen it, so it's score a direct free kick that's gone straight in, so that would be good if he could add on to that one just such a great option to have isn't it and yeah as I said offer something else to the midfielders that Ipswich have at their disposal at the moment excited to see what he can bring in the coming weeks and he'll get those opportunities as well because Jens Kust is not going to play week in week out we have Tuesday nights coming up Charlton Bristol City down the line and I don't see Jens Kust playing Saturday Tuesday so we'll get to see a bit of rotation in there we'll get to see some more of Marcelino Nunez Stu you're mooted also I want to quickly mention I don't know if you guys have seen the video but the video that the club put out of him going come on tractor boys just nice little field good moment but yeah Stu unmute yourself

35:36Stuart Watson:sorry yeah just to highlight the difference between Jens and Marcelino as players he replaced Jens who's okay by the way we were a bit concerned that he went off hobbled off a little bit didn't he was worried it might be his knees that he has to manage, but it was just a bit of an ankle knock. But Kieran seemed pretty laid back about that being okay. But he replaced him just after the half hour, as Alex mentioned. Nunez made one fewer pass than Jens Kuyusta in that football match, 24 compared to 25. And he was only on the pitch for 30-odd minutes compared to an hour. So Jens is a ball carrier, as we know.

36:13Stuart Watson:We know he's someone who's got the silky spins and he can drive you up the pitch. And his sort of attacking influence comes that way. Marcelinho is a pure technical playmaker, isn't he? Someone that I think in games where if we get the Derby scenario again or the Preston scenario where there's a deep block, he's someone that can pick the lock. He's got that little bit of a magic factor, hasn't he? And we're going to see a free kick goal at some stage, aren't we? The whole crowd, there's a booming chant of Nunez which won that free kick about 30-odd yards out, fairly central late on. And that was a whisker over the angle of bar and post, wasn't it?

36:49Stuart Watson:Great effort. yeah what about october 5th hey that'd be a nice day to do it um everyone knows i'm sure knows that date we shall see what happens um another player to speak about aj is the uh sindra wally igeli yeah close enough wally i'm not quite buying i'd go with walla well yeah wally's like that the robot isn't it yeah that's what i was thinking i can help you out here boys i've got a voice note of him recording his name himself this is what the audio i'll find it while we're talking i believe the val vala is with like a v it's like a yeah a soft soft w and uh i'll find it for you hang on sindra vala egeli is how i'd go with it um his audio clip they did with this announcement he said egeli quite quickly so i thought it was egli but it's not i think it's sindra vala egeli let me play this

37:47one more time

37:54I'm happy with that but I think I've nailed that now first impression first impression of him he played 20 minutes I think of this game obviously comes on at a point where momentum has shifted in the match hasn't it but he wants to come on make an impression and you can see that with the way that he's kind of getting into those advanced areas again a different type of right winger to casey mcateer um one who i think we saw occupy kind of those narrow spaces quite a lot where he likes to come inside um and that again having a different option for that position is really good wants to take people on wants to kind of use his physicality doesn't look out of place in the championship at all which i think is largely down to his size, at least from what we've seen early doors, his size is such a big help in the physicality, where I think players can come in from Scandinavia into a very different league and a very different environment, and it can eat them up.

38:53And this is a Norwegian 19-year-old who looked perfectly at home. And yeah, it was good to see the crowd get right behind him, because he needs that, and I think he enjoyed that. I liked the bit, of course, where the ball comes to him and everyone urges him to shoot. He does shoot. It's blocked the shot that he has. I think that was one of two that he had. He had two blocked shots that he had. This one's from quite far out. We're talking about 30 yards or so. It's one of those that probably whoever's blocked it will have a bit of a bruise, I'd say, in the morning and ends up actually, of course, playing quite a pivotal part, that shot in falling to Jack Clark, who absolutely embarrasses Ben Godfrey in Ben Godfrey's probably worst performance at Portman Road, I'd say, for the fifth goal.

39:39So, yeah, look, it's very early doors with him. We've only seen the brief glimpse in a very bizarre game to come into from his perspective, but really like what we've seen from him so far. Don't forget, he's come into this group as well, having signed, then gone off straight away to go on international duty with Norway under 21s, then returning probably on Wednesday, training Thursday, Friday, maybe, if he's not had any time off, that is, he's literally had no time at all to get used to the system. So that was a really strong debut, all things considered. Yeah, very much so, Stu. You know, were you impressed by him?

40:17You know, yeah, he looks like he can do a lot of fun, the bastards, if he's in the right position.

40:21Stuart Watson:He can certainly hit a ball when it's stayed hit, didn't it? I think both those shots that he had left defenders flawed. First impressions are he's just, for a 19-year-old, he's physically impressive if he's got some physical growth to come you think he could be a real unit so those sort of wide players that have got size and skill are a rarity that's why Ipswich have paid the money they have and why so many teams across Europe were eyeing him up so nice game for him to come into while Ipswich the crowd and the players are up and he could go on and have a bit of fun and I think it would be good for him if Ipswich can find a bit of form as a team.

41:03Stuart Watson:And it means that there's not so much pressure on his shoulders and Ipswich can kind of integrate him slowly. But yeah, another encouraging first glimpse of a new player. And yeah, the bench boost is what we're going to call it because yeah, he's a very good bench. When we saw the line-up and gone, let's have a look at the bench, bloody hell, a lot of options for Kieran McKenna. It's options and it's variety as well. And Alex mentioned it. We're talking about players in the same position but offering different skill sets. And I think that's really important because the championship offers up so many different types of tests.

41:37Stuart Watson:Some teams want to go toe-to-toe and play football. Some go man-to-man with their marking. Some are counter-attacking sides. Some are deep blocks. And you have to find different solutions. And Kieran McKenna is pretty good at that, as we've seen. But sometimes you need some... So I think rotation will come into it at times. I think you'll see Nunez and Kuyusta maybe rotated part of that will be through Cuyustas kind of managing his fitness but there'll be other times where there's just different different things needed for different games and the bench was was huge wasn't it in that championship promotion season how many games were super tight and you'd get to 70 minutes and McKenna would make a three four attacking changes at the top end of the pitch and it would just overwhelm a tiring opposition whether that was you know that was Jackson and harness and players like that that came on and were always ready when called upon.

42:31Stuart Watson:And it's going to be important that some of these players are ready to play that role. And that's why I think Kieran McKenna was so delighted with Jack Clark's impact, because he didn't come to this football club to be a super sub. No one likes that tag. But if that's to be his role, it will be a really important one. Yeah, I'm sure different games, he may have a look and go, as you said, if he feels like that team is better for that player, then I'm sure he'll do that. So, yeah, very good options for Kieran McKenna. Let's hear from Kieran once again on the game as a whole, and then I'll go back to you boys to speak about any other business in the game, anything else you want to sort of talk about.

43:07But here's Kieran McKenna on the win. Yeah, good night for us. Lots of things went how you would want them to go. Good night for the group. Good night for the supporters. It's always important to get that first. Victory took a little bit longer, but we've spoken plenty about what the type of summer has been. Tonight honestly felt like the first game for the group now. So a good start. Still loads to work on, loads that we can do better, but a good game to come through.

43:33Stuart Watson:I was going to say, I think you said that the press conference yesterday were not going to be anywhere near our match potential yet. If that's the early stages of this process, that's quite exciting for everyone, isn't it? Yeah, it is. There's some good signs there, but let's not forget that was a really tough game. The first half was really tough. I've got a lot of respect for Ruben he sets his teams up to press really well I've faced them in a couple of different competitions their pressure in the first half was really, really good it was really difficult to break the pressure and to get out and we had to battle really hard there was a lot of duels, a lot of man-to-man so it was a really tough game of course we got our rewards in the end and that was important because we needed to feel as a team that if teams come here and want to press us high and make it difficult for us in that way then we need to feel that our football will win through and our individual talent and the top end of the pitch can hurt teams.

44:27So it was good to come through that type of game tonight but every game is different. That challenge of that tonight was tough. It's a completely different challenge to what Darby or Preston posed in the games before. We know we're going to be stretched and challenged in every single game this season. Nothing is going to be given to us. It certainly wasn't tonight. We had to work really, really hard for it. and it was a good one to get through but everyone's feet are very much on the floor. The players felt that that was a really tough game in the first half and to get the rewards that we got in the second half we needed to do a lot of things well and show a lot of resilience and a lot of strength.

45:02It's a good one to come through but it's one game and we know that it starts all over again next week and going to Blackburn next week is going to be really difficult. Yeah, don't get too high with the highs, don't get too low with the lows as they say. Other sort of positive from this game, clean sheet boys. Ring the claxon, Alex Palmer finally gets an Ipswich Town clean sheet. He got one in pre-season, but in a competitive fixture, he finally got a clean sheet, Stu.

45:29Stuart Watson:So, yeah, hadn't really dawned on me that it would be his first competitive clean sheet for Ipswich Town. We've gone through a load of individuals. There's probably the boys at the back maybe go under the radar a little bit. But as I said earlier on, I thought Leif Davis looked back to being far more effective. Loads of crosses and key passes in this match. They got him into the areas that he operates in. Jacob Greaves, I thought, was excellent. You know, got his head on everything, but he had some nice marauding runs as well. He sort of was getting involved with the attack, wasn't he? Certainly when Ipswich were on top in the second half and having a bit of fun.

46:02Stuart Watson:How many times I looked up and thought, he's well over the halfway line here, Jacob Greaves. So, yeah, when you win 5-0 and it's like that, you can go through pretty much the whole team, can't you? yeah we won't do that but um but yeah good team performance aj and uh yeah that would have been a bit of a disappointment in the end if sheffield and i'd scored a go out of nowhere just to you know it wouldn't matter but just nice that clean sheet just a bit of positivity confidence for the back line yeah and they deserve it because i think they've started look there's been some shaky moments at the back but i think the defense has not been an issue for it so it has it they've not really been tested that that much that kind of intensely in the championship it's been the attack that needs to gel.

46:43So getting the rewards for that has been really positive. I want to quickly mention George Hurst. I know we weren't going to mention the whole team, but come on, he scored a goal and got an assist. He deserves a mention. Been a tough old time since missing that penalty at Bromley. I think his comments that were picked up after the Birmingham game probably didn't help. That's what I do with a couple of poor misses and poor performances. Derby, everything cannoned off him. He was really poor. I thought he battled really hard against Sheffield United on Friday night, then gets the assists, which was kind of a good hold-up play to play the ball forward for Philogene for the second goal, and then a goal for himself, which, as we've said, probably quite fortuitous, but look, they all count, don't they?

47:27So yeah, deserves credit for that. And the other thing I'll quickly mention as well, Kieran McKenna's a gentleman, isn't he? So the praise for Ruben Sayers, who I think he knew deep down was not going to be Sheffield United manager by the end of the weekend. They were I mean, look, the first half competitive, the second half, they were atrocious. And I think that we can sit here and wax lyrical about Ipswich, and we should. And that should absolutely be the 100 % focus. But there has to be the caveat with this was a really poor Sheffield United side as well. So that's what it comes into as well.

48:03Not too high, not too low. Yes, an incredible performance from Ipswich, and they deserve all the praise for the way that they played. but they're going to face some much harder tests than the one they faced on Friday night. Yeah, trip to Lancashire next up, Stu. I won't get too much into that. But five games in, you know, we only lost one game. Obviously, three draws, one win. How do you sort of reflect on the opening five games?

48:32Stuart Watson:Yeah, even before this game, my glass was half full. I kind of looked at Birmingham away was arguably one of, if not the toughest opening day fixture that Ipswich could have been handed while the squad was still very much in a state of flux. There's no doubt that everything going on behind the scenes during the transfer window would have been disruptive to McKenna and to the squad. So to come through that with a late goal, I think, had to be taken as a positive. I thought the Southampton performance was good and, could have should have won that on another day um Preston was just one of those one of those days where you know it was the poor penalty that they gave away and then once you give the opposition something to defend that that was a frustrating day but I always felt like this this team this squad would come good under under Kieran McKenna the slight niggling doubt was how long it would take and whether we'd get into the realms of kind of early the early days of demolition man under paul cook that sort of five games becomes ten games and then all of a sudden everyone gets a bit bit anxious and nervy and you're chasing your tail a little bit too much so to nip all of that in the bud with a performance and a win like this i think is is really important um and yeah i'm the same as everybody else it's a it's unsettling when so many players that we've we've grown to to really love and trust have all gone um and it's into the unknown isn't it at the moment that's that's that's nervy but it's also really exciting as well and I think we have to remind ourselves of this is a power-packed squad at championship level and um I'm looking forward to seeing them grow together.

50:24Yeah, me too. AJ, yeah. I was just going to say, I think there's a lot that comes into comparisons here as well, especially because it's such a title favourite. And there's always a risk, and we were all very much aware of this, that you start poorly, you lose your opening batch of games or drop points or whatever, and you can find yourself with a mountain to climb. And you look at the championship this year, they've got the same points return as Southampton. And I don't think we've seen Southampton in the same kind of – and it's the same form as well. It's 1-1, drawn three, lost one. You look at the weekend, for example, and they've drawn to Portsmouth.

51:05We've had Leicester that drew against Oxford away. Middlesbrough, top of the league, were held at Preston. You can go through and you can pick quite a few. commentary have to score a last last minute equaliser against norwich so there's no kind of signs where you're thinking these are these are going to be a problem this is going to be an issue with kind of having to play catch up birmingham for example lost over the weekends as well there's teams that are going to find problems throughout this season throughout the start we said it at the start of the season as well where you look at the other teams who might have those kind of wobbles it's not just going to be ipswich so if ipswich can stabilise now we can kick on in the coming weeks then while other teams are still also finding their feet you can't ignore that that's where you can then start to climb the table and you don't want to look at it too much early doors of course if i said to you guys where are it switching the table now i don't think you'd be able to tell me and that's the right thing but that's where kind of these points differences can change because you know five points six points seven points can easily then become you're chasing 10 points, 20 points, whatever.

52:11Being able to kind of keep those gaps short, no matter whether it's the start or the end, and we've seen this with other teams as well, who found it difficult to make up the gaps, or we've spoken about Leeds, for example, who had a poor start a couple of seasons ago, but ended up with 90 plus points. Totally doable, totally fine, and I think it offers some good perspective. My guess is 14th place. What's yours, Stu?

52:36Stuart Watson:I believe it is 14th, because I looked up the starting but yeah we were talking about it before we started recording results wise a lot of draws across the division this weekend which I guess is good from an Ipswich point of view it's far too early draws 10 games in is when the table really starts to take shape but not from a points perspective I just think from a general feel good factor just to settle everybody down a little bit that was important do you want a quick quiz? hat trick quiz Alex turned to me and said I don't think I've ever covered a hat trick after the game at the weekend I've had a little look back there has been this is the 13th Ipswich Town hat trick this is from the excellent Pride of Anglia website this century the first of which is a pretty iconic one how many of them can you name Ross don't get me drawn in on this would you have been at the Chaplin?

53:38No, it was Lee 1-1.

53:40Stuart Watson:I've not seen a single one. That was the last one. Connor Chaplin versus Charlton, 6-0. Lee Evans. That was the one before. Domcaster, 6-0 at Portman Road. Grant Ward, debut hat-trick. You're going back in order. That's the next one. Darrell Murphy. Rotherham, away, 5-2. I know Connor Wickham scored one against Don Conn. Yes. Yeah, you've got them bang in order so far. That was 2011, February. I know Alan Lee got one against Luton once upon a time. Oh, yes, you've got that as well. That was a 5-0 win against Luton in the Championship 2006. You've skipped one. Is that John Walters? Correct. Against?

54:30Was it against Sheffield United? Nope. Oh. I swear I was against Sheffield United. Bristol City. Ah, Bristol City, of course it was.

54:39Stuart Watson:2007. Oh, okay. Now the hatchet. Pablo Canago scored one in the UEFA Cup, didn't he? Yes. Remember the team? Avenir Beggin. Correct. 8-1 in 2002. Yeah. Magilton would have, obviously, the Magilton won at Bolton. Against Bolton, sorry, in the playoffs would have been one. We've got three left. Alex Maffey, obviously Norwich. That was 90. That was 98, wasn't it? I think so. Yeah, pre-2000. So I've got two more, have I? Three more. Three more. Oh, bloody hell. Who would have scored a hat-trick? Who would have scored a hat-trick? Clues on those. A few people shouting, I'm sure. One in the Premier League.

55:25Stuart Watson:Oh, Marcus Stewart, Southampton. Correct. Homegrown player. Two homegrown players. Oh, God. Oh, Dee Bodic. Yeah, 2004. Youngest Hatchrick goalscorer. Same season. Darren Bent, man. Walsall. Was it Walsall? Yes, it was Walsall. Well done, Ross. There we go. That was ridiculous. Super impressive. My God. I will admit, I have done previous stuff on Hatchricks in the past. And yeah, obviously. But you've remembered them, though. I will admit I'm putting together a hat trick piece at some stage and I will admit I must have looked at that list maybe yesterday or the day before but to remember certain ones You shouldn't have said that I know but I'm pleased I was able to get most of them on top of my head straight away I had to get a few clues from you so thanks for that Let us know ladies and gentlemen how you got on because that is a lot of names and teams to remember doesn't come around often does it boys hat tricks it's not that often it happens and when it does happen it's just lovely to see what would you do with your match ball Stu if you got one where would you I'll just get it probably get it get in the back shot of here somewhere get it in a little plinth get you all to sign it make some rude comments on it no doubt yep but yeah Yeah, gentlemen, Fulagene, his mum's got it now, so she's got it to keep it safe for him.
