In short
Ipswich Town’s 1-1 draw with Watford at Portman Road, focusing on positives/negatives, defensive errors, missed chances, and an on-pitch spat between Azul Matasiwa and Jadon Philogene.
Guests
Two hosts—Roscoe and Alex Jones (AJ). No external guests are interviewed in the provided transcript; they also play clips from Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna and players Darnell Furlong and (briefly) others.
Key claims
- Ipswich created enough chances to win but were “frustrated” to only take a point.
- The Watford goal came from Ipswich defensive shape breaking on the left, leading to a low cross and a finish by Imran Louza (six goals, two assists; four in his last four).
- Ipswich responded well after conceding; the equaliser was built from Cedric Kipre’s high positioning and a through ball to Philogene.
- The Matasiwa–Philogene confrontation should have stayed in the dressing room; McKenna says it’s passion that “spilt over.”
Notable examples
- Misses: Ivan Azaz/Azoun headers (one wide, one saved by Watford keeper Selvick) and Marcelino Núñez’s point-blank shank into the Sir Bobby Robson Stand.
- Standout: Sindre Vala-Egley for crossing/creativity; also Kipre and Philogene.
- Defensive context: Watford’s 4-4-2, reliance on Quadwo Bar’s flank runs, and Darnell Furlong being tested by pace.

0:57Hello, everybody. It's me, Roscoe, and welcome to the latest episode of the Kings of Anglia It's Just Town podcast, sponsored and proudly sponsored by two local Suffolk companies in Molek, Eula. Sort of nearly nailed it. And Star Dust Spirits, proudly sponsoring the podcast. Thank you very much for them as standard. And it's a rare two-man pod today with me and Alex Jones. It feels weird being in our bedrooms, AJ, because normally we record a two-man pod abroad somewhere in pre-season. But it's just you and me as we're going to break down the 1-1 draw with Watford, a frustrating night at Portman Road.
1:35How are you, my friend? Yeah, first things first. Yeah, definitely is rare when it's just us two. I think we've done a few before that haven't been in the deepest, darkest depths of Austria or France. But yeah, that is where the bulk of them have come. um secondly i like how i know that you break down molecular into molecular but then i also enjoyed how you did stardust spirits this time as well just to just to balance it out um thirdly for those watching on video i'm kind of in a slightly different part of my room here i feel like i look a bit like a saint because i've got this this mirror above uh not in a literal sense obviously but like yeah the mirror kind of gives me that that look which is a bit weird um and fourthly how am i i'm good i'm quite tired because midweek games mean that i get back in the early hours of the morning um and also quite frustrated as we mentioned based on how last night was obviously recording uh a few hours after means you get a chance to to look back and and consider what happened, but still, I think the overriding feeling and we're not recording, Ross, it's just dawned on me.
2:45We are recording. It's recording for me. Is it? It's not recording for me. Isn't it? I don't know. Maybe we are. Oh, I don't know. Maybe my laptop's not. Okay, never mind. Well, we'll just keep going. It's recording. We'll find out. Hopefully it is. Yeah. Welcome to a little behind-the-scenes clip here. Where was I going with that? Yeah, it means I've had little time to kind of go back and reflect on uh how it feels and it still feels raw and rough and a bit annoying um but plenty of positives to take assuming that this is being recorded fingers crossed yeah we'll find out if you're listening guys and it has been recorded if you're not um well we'd have to record this all over again back in the day when we used to record in the studio there's a few times i thought i would press record but i didn't and we had to record the whole thing again um dark days but that's I want to make sure.
3:38I think my laptop's just being a bit weird looking at it now. I think it's just kind of looking like it's glitching. But as long as you can hear me, as long as you can see me, nothing else matters, does it? Yeah. And the big thing for me, it says recording in my left-hand corner. And also I can press a button that says end recording. So we should be fine. That's good. But what we're going to do is we're going to play some audio from Kira McKenna. It's your town manager. And maybe what you can do, AJ, maybe come in and out with the chat and see if it comes up for you. Sounds like a good idea. You play that audio.
4:11I will. And the key word you're going to hear from him is frustration because I think he says that three times. So let's hear from Kieran McEnough.
4:22Let's hear from Kieran McEnough. Yeah, frustrating. Frustrated with the result. Frustrated to just get a point in the game. Of course, there was some ups and downs in the game, but I thought there were more positives than negatives. and certainly on chances created. We've done more than enough to win the game, so we're frustrated to only come out of it with a point. But we have to keep learning, improving, take the lessons from it. We've conceded a poor goal, so we're disappointed with that at the moment when we've not really had to do any defending and we're all back there as a team. So we're really disappointed with the goal.
5:00Reaction to the goal was really good. That's a big positive. Learned from previous lessons, sort of came together well as a group, got straight back into our football, kept a cool head, scored a really good goal. So we get ourselves to half-time in a decent position. And I think most of the second half we've chased it well, to be honest. Of course, it's not easy when a team are defending deep and really trying to hang for the result for a lot of the half. But in that situation, you know, it's not going to be easy, but you've got to work the ball wide. You've got to get good crossing positions.
5:29You've got to get bodies in the box. We've done that. We've got a couple of great chances off it. We had some shots around the edge. you had some chances from set players. We've done enough of the things that you need to do in that situation to feel like over the course of time, we certainly would have won that second half and won the game. There we go, AJ. You're back. You gave me a thumbs up. So, is it recording? Yeah, we're all good. Thank God. Thank God. Well, luckily, you noticed that five minutes in. If you noticed an hour and you're like, oh, why have you not been recording? My heart would have just dropped at that point if we'd done an entire hour's podcast and it hadn't been recording.
6:07But as you said, we've had this, or at least I know I haven't, but I know you've had this before. We've recorded the whole podcast and realised that little red light wasn't flashing. It didn't show up for me before because my screen had done a weird thing where it split in half, but we're good. Maybe that kind of sums up the emotions based on last night a little bit, doesn't it? Yeah, very much so. We're not going to go in-depth, everybody, because it was a K game. It was a classic championship game, wasn't it really? But I want to start off as we always do, AJ, sort of talk about the team because midweek games, we're sort of bracing ourselves for like six, seven, eight changes from Kieran McKenna.
6:47But this time, only three against Watford. One enforced, you can sort of say, with Lee Davis coming out of the team, Ben Johnson replacing him. Jack Taylor came out. Jens Duesday came in for him. and Chubac Pom for Marcelino Nunes. Thoughts on that? Probably nice that it wasn't, as I mentioned, seven, eight changes, only three. Yeah, only three. One in force, as we mentioned. Doesn't sound like Leif Davis' return is going to be overly imminent. So, yeah, an interesting one to see Ben Johnson come in maybe over Ashley Young, who's stepped in occasionally in that left-back role. This, again, is maybe where Towner feeling the pressure of not having signed cover left-back after Connor Townsend's injury.
7:37They might be starting to fill that one a little bit, but they've got right-backs who can cover in left-back. So Ben Johnson stepped in there. And then those two midfield roles, I know that Jack Taylor will probably feel very hard done by to drop out of the team because he's been really good. Really good against West Brom, really good against QPR, showing lots of bits. But comes out of the team here, just gives Cajuster an opportunity, again, to prove that he deserves to be starting games off the back of a couple of really poor performances against Borough and Charlton, where he started those two and just looked so far off the pace.
8:13So this was a big opportunity for him to go out there and say, hang on, I'm the man on loan from Napoli who was one of the best performers in the Premier League last year. Make sure that I'm on the team seat week in, week out. and then Nunez dropping out, I know was another one that frustrated people, but given the injury record that he arrived with, the one that Norwich fans bang on about all the time and his fitness issues, I think it made sense not to play him Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday. Give him a little bit of a rest, and I'm sure he'll be good to go for Swansea, having come on late in this game.
8:47So, Chubarakpom starting, and again, after that frustrating injury where he came on against West Brom, picked it up and then had to go off. An opportunity for him to kind of nail down a number 10 spot and show everyone it's not just Marcelino Nunez you should be thinking about. Definitely. And if you've been watching on video, you may have seen me having a bit of a coughing fit. I've done that stupid thing where you drink a bit of water and it goes down the wrong hole. I was just trying to... So I was hoping you were going to continue speaking as much as you can there, AJ, because I was like, please don't come back to me because I'm going to keep coughing.
9:25But I'm fine. Are you okay, Ross? Yes, I can continue. The patchy start to this podcast. Yeah, maybe that's going to be the running trend for the rest of this one. What else is going to happen? Someone's Wi-Fi is going to go. Someone's laptop is going to blow up. Please, not again. No. So we'll wait and see. But yeah, AJ, should we talk actually about town defensive woes because another poor goal conceded, my friend. you know a good player for Watford scored the goal but sort of take us back you know the build-up to the goal and yeah defensive woes yeah so Watford come into this game playing a 4-4-2 which at times looked suicidal to be honest in their approach but it meant that when they had spells of possession they could get bodies forwards they were able to be quite threatening The wide players are always going to be key in this.
10:19And not having Rocco Vato, who pulled up with an injury over the weekend, it's going to be a long-term hamstring for him, meant that there was a lot of reliance on Quadwo Bar, who's playing off the left. He's predominantly played on the right. But they brought Tom Ince in. Remember Tom Ince? 33 years old. He's 34 in January. But yeah, he started on the right and Bar was on the left. And Bar is kind of your young, he's 22, pacey, aggressive runner, all of those kind of traits and he was the big outlet for Watford on that flank and it was important, I tweeted quite early on in the game this was going to be a big test for Darnell Furlong, a big test of pace and defensive shape and there weren't that many moments where Town had to spend that possession, I mean the total possession stats were 58 to 42 and this goal that comes for Watford I wouldn't say it was like totally against the runner to play it wasn't Ipswich banging the door down to get the goal but they'd had the better of the early stages and then they have this moment out of possession where Watford bring the ball down the left it's Furlong and Sindra Vala-Egli and Sindra's probably coming to a little bit of a deeper position too early for Furlong's liking so Furlong you can see tells him that Sindra checks back and Furlong says go press him the problem with doing that is that it then breaks the shape.
11:40So Furlong's pushed Barla Egli forward, and that means that all of a sudden Watford are able to get that overload because they've got two players in Barr and Bowler down the left, and they can just play straight through because there's a huge gap left by Egli and Furlong. It's the low cross from Barr, I think. I keep getting that wrong. It's Barr's low cross, I think, that gets turned in after a quick one-two. O'Shea does about as well as he can do to block the cross. But in the end, it ends up flicking up off him and into the path of Imran Luzer, who I think has been one of the best performers in the championship so far this season.
12:15I don't know how he's still in this league. He now has six goals and two assists. A brilliant kind of left-footed, deep-lying playmaker. I think, yeah, brilliant footballer. But make him work for it. Make him work for the goal. He's scored four goals in his last four games, one in each of them. So, yeah, he's a quality player, but he won't. This will probably be the easiest finish of the four that he's had, I'd say. It's just Ipswich gifting goals through sloppy mistakes. We saw this in the Premier League, but that was against the best players in the world. Imran, lose is a good player. Watford are a good team.
12:47But you can't gift teams like that a goal when you need to be the dominant side in games. Yeah, especially at home as well. It's now become a bit of a running trend because the QPR game, thankfully, went on to score four goals. But sometimes that can backfire when you can see goals like that. but I was really impressed by him. He had a ponytail and everything. He's probably a player that you love to hate as an opposition, but you look at him and go, you've got to appreciate him. Why did he get booed? Do you remember this? I saw he was really getting some... I think he went for a corner, I think, and then obviously maybe he was just being a bit cocky and whatever.
13:25He looked like... Do you remember Ruben Neves when he was playing at Wolves, especially in those early seasons? He had the proper beard. I don't think he had a ponytail, but he had quite long hair at the back. There was something quite similar. Ruben Neves, for me, is the best player of the modern championship era. I think loser is a little way to go, but I definitely saw some similarities, A, in how they look, and B, in how they can kind of get into those deeper areas, spot the runners, and the passing range is just ridiculous. He's a really good player. I'm always interested to, this is a question maybe to ask, like Leif Davis in particular, when you go for a corner, especially when you're away from home, because definitely at Coupier, I'm obviously pitch side, and normally, you know, when obviously a town attacking and got a corner, Leif Davis gets so much abuse.
14:16And, you know, they go, you know, they obviously shout his name and then they call him, you know, the naughty words. And like Davis, I'm sure he is trying not to listen to it, but there must be times where it must get to you a little bit. Like, you know, like... Yeah, I think the players always try and block it out. It's an interesting point. I remember being at a West Ham game with my lovely girlfriend, Sophie. We went to watch them play Liverpool. And Andy Robertson was on corners in that game. And we were in one of the seats. And you were shouting at him. Oh, yeah, yeah, exactly. Well, there were a lot of people shouting naughty words at him.
14:49And he delivered the cross that led to their goal. And he didn't let it bother him. But as soon as that goal went in, he turned around. And he went right to those West Ham fans. So I think it's part of the game, isn't it? You give what you can get. I'm sure Liza liked having a bit of back and forth in the same way that it happened with Ono Hernandez and the same way that it's happened with Marcelino Nunez and Norwich fans and all of that. It's kind of part of the pantomime, isn't it? But yeah, good player. Definitely. Thankfully, though, Town respond well and didn't take long to equalise my friend.
15:20Jadon Villagin loved scoring at Portman Road. It's now six goals on Suffolk soil. Another good finish. and Cedric Kipre, one assist. I think you mentioned the video verdict. Maybe the best assist of the season so far? Yeah, again, I need to go back through. I haven't been able to look through all the Ipswich goals since the start of the season in the last probably 12 hours since you recorded that video verdict. But it'll be interesting to go back and look at that. I love this assist. I thought it was really good. It's the way the town respond is excellent and there have been times where they've conceded a goal and they've struggled to swing the pendulum, turn the momentum.
16:03It's been hard for them. And in this one, they get right back and up at Watford. And the defenders are playing incredibly high. That always does worry me. And I've mentioned that as a worry before because teams like Borough can really hurt you if you do that. But this was different at home, especially, and also against the Watford side that were going to be suffering at possession quite a lot. So the centre-backs come up quite high. And Kipre does so well here. He brings the ball forward in that left-sided centre-back role. He looks up and he gives Ngakia, the Watford right-back, the eyes. And he slows the ball down and Ngakia's thinking, what is he going to do next?
16:39And the last thing you expect a kind of big, powerful centre-back to do, he's got the physicality that Kipre has, is to look up, spot the run of Filagene and just to roll it past everyone. A lovely little through ball. Philogene carries it into the box and Philogene scores it. It's one of those that looks so simple. For him, it might be simple, but it definitely isn't. The way that he has to manipulate the ball onto his right, open up his body and then slot it into the bottom corner. Really well worked. We've seen Philogene score a couple of those. I think he definitely has against... It's quite similar to his first against Sheffield United, kind of the position in the box.
17:18Yeah, give him that kind of area and he will score. He will be clinical, especially at Portman Road. takes it well, six for the season, all at Portman Road, as you say, and town level and looking to kick on from there. Very much so. And I got a nice picture of him doing his celebration. At the time, I didn't know what the context was, but then I found out it's basically an old Neymar celebration when he was at Barcelona. Someone replied to the image I put on social media, and it was like a gif of Neymar doing basically a glove on top of his face and doing a bit of a jig and dance. So I'm sure Jadon Philogene probably is someone he looked up to, probably Neymar because of his skills and all that stuff.
18:01So yeah, Jadon Philogene having a very good season, AJ. Anything else to talk about from the first half? As I said, just Town were on the up. They were looking to potentially get in front, but weren't able to. But anything that sticks to your mind for that first half? Yeah, I like the first half. It was weird because it was a game where Town shaded possession in that first half. It was quite even, actually, when you go back and look at the numbers. And they had five shots, one on target. So they didn't go and knock the door down. But I like what they tried to do in what was, when you actually look at the numbers, yeah, quite a surprisingly even first half with things like passes and shots on target and the possession shots I mentioned.
18:43But I liked it, and they went about it in the right way. It didn't feel like some of the games where they've been quite flat. It felt like they played with the right tempo and the right intensity. Different to the Charlton one where they had all of the ball and they were getting it kind of forward, but it felt like they lacked the spark. The spark was here in this game. They just didn't quite have the cutting edge. But going in at halftime, your big question that I know you love to ask, and I hope I'm not jumping ahead here, but yeah, how was I feeling at halftime? Pretty confident and pretty happy because I just felt that with the way that they turned that game and knowing that you had top players to come on, knowing that Watford would probably tie, missing a couple of key players, I felt the Ipswich could really go and push forward and kick on in that second half and that the chances would come.
19:33And the chances did come, to be fair. It did. No, you're not jumping ahead. But yeah, I felt pretty good at halftime. I was actually really entertained. I thought it was a really good championship, classic encounter, two teams really going for it. But Watford had just beaten Middlesbrough on the weekend. Of course, we got a bit of confidence winning 4-1 at QPR. So there's two teams really going for it. Obviously, Watford do have a bit of a low block, so we have to sort of change, adapt to that. I felt we were crossing the ball more and more on this scale. I think Stu mentioned in his observations, maybe changing up a little bit, you know, getting the ball into Hurstie because, you know, he's the man, you know, got two headers at QPR and that was sort of the goal to maybe get to him and maybe find what he said.
20:20Yeah, I think there's definitely an argument to say they've been going more direct. When you look at this team, and one of the big things that got mentioned when I did the live video before the match was, I saw a lot of comments talking about the creativity. You take Nunez out of the team and you've not got an out-and-out creative player in that team, apart from one who really stands out to me, and that's Sindra Vala-Egley, who I'm sure we'll come on to in a bit. But he's that kind of player who you'll get out into those wide areas. Yes, he wants to cut in a shoot. His crossing is really good.
20:48He really gets a lot of power and a lot of accuracy behind those crosses. And I think he's built confidence from that QPR game where he got the assist and also helped to play a big part in the fourth goal as well in that game. So there's definitely that element to it as well. The other thing I'd say about the first half, what a fight. The whole thing was just a scrap. Watford, and I mean this probably in a good way, to be honest, because teams can use this to their benefit, but they're a nasty team. They really are. The way that they can go after you, there's always the counter of, well, I wouldn't want my team to play like that and I'd rather have the open, expansive style.
21:30But look, if it works for you and you can go out and you can get away with it, the battle between Kiprianu and Akpom in that game, Kiprianu just kicked chunks out of him for most of it. We saw Ngakia get at it. there was a bit where Filagene goes down the left, absolutely embarrasses Ngakia with a cheeky nutmeg lays it off to Matasiwa who picks up the ball and Ngakia is just like, nah, not having that absolutely wallops Matasiwa to the ground and I think that Ipswich handled the physical element of it quite well but maybe didn't expect it in the same way because Watford really tried to get up and in their faces, it felt like there could be kind of an explosion in there.
22:14I wouldn't have been surprised if there was a red card was one of my big thoughts at the halftime. Yeah, very much so. Yeah, I remember the Akpom situation as well because he was really down for a while because of that challenge. Also, just looking at a note, Kipre hit the post as well in that first half. So that would have been nice to see a set-piece goal, but that wasn't the case. But yeah, 1-1 AJ at half-time. Then second half comes into play. I just went out you know got myself hot chocolate in the media room and then I came back out and yeah Watford were on the up weren't they I felt they were the team because I have to stay in one spot so I was actually now taking pictures of the Watford attack and I was actually surprised to see loads of Watford attack going up I was like oh no I'm like oh no what if we're going to get into this game and they could have done yeah they could have done they were getting into good areas weren't they they're a strong team on the counter they have those pacey players they've got with the two up front they have as well there's pace and energy and a bit of height in there um it should be said that in the second half what for two shots one was from mamadou duambia who um probably had their best chance of the well one of their two chances isn't it of the second half where he um latches on to a long ball down the right cuts in uh and beats johnson carries it past kip right and curls on from around 25 maybe be nearer to 30 yards that dips just over walton's goal it's a really close one that the other one didn't come until uh the 76th minute when imran loser decided to go from goal from inside his own half and and walton was able to hold that one that's twice in the last two games that a watford midfielder has tried to score from inside their own half which is a very weird thought to be perfectly honest but um there you go given the fact that the games were a year and a half apart so yeah they carried that threat but I felt that Ipswich dealt with it quite well the defensive side of it was really good and with that with limiting Watford yes there were frustrating moments where surrendered possession and Watford were able to counter but in limiting them it was good that they were able to get the ball up the pitch what Ipswich sorry in that second half ended it with 11 shots and three on target there's more than enough in there to go and nab the winner compared to what Watford had, weren't able to do that.
24:37Yeah, let's talk about those chances. And we're going to discuss another thing that happened in the game, I think just before the hour mark. But we've got an audio clip to play and also other discussion on that. But let's talk about chances, AJ, because bloody hell, I've rendered a pitch, so I wasn't able to capture those moments. But I was sort of watching it from my view and going, how are they not taking these chances? Where do you want to start? Because Ivan Azan, of course, come off the bench. She had two big chances. Nunes was another big one. Yeah. And any other of that come to mind? Yeah.
25:10Run through them. This was obviously brought together by these subs coming on. And there's lots of exciting substitutes to bring on, as you mentioned, as on Nunes, Jack Clark came on, Jack Taylor has been performing well. He came on. So you have all of those and they, they were lively and they brought real intensity to the game. a point when it dropped off and i know that you mentioned about what for kind of looking quite threatening coming into the game the substitutes changed it totally and swung the momentum back into ipswich's favor and then you just need something to fall into the back of the net and that was the the bit that was lacking um the first big chance i can remember was one that jack taylor got after some good work from jack clark kind of cuts it back to uh taylor just inside the area and He dinks it.
25:58It just goes onto the roof of the net. If it dips a little bit earlier, it's a really good chance. And then it's the Azon ones, and these, for me, are the big ones. The first one is a wonderful cross from Sindra Vala-Egley, and he makes good contact with the header, and he flicks it wide. And I love even Azon, but, my God, you have to hit the target. You have to hit the target. Direct that just on target. It's going to bundle into the bottom corner. does well to jump high and to make good contact. But yeah, he needed to do so much better with that chance. I'm sure he would have been livid. And if he could have had it again, he would have loved it.
26:36And in a way, he does get it again, because then he gets another one a few minutes later, makes really good connection with this one. And to be honest, in a way, he almost makes up entirely for that poor miss by doing everything right with the second one. It's almost like it comes back to him in exactly the way he would have wanted it. Really good connection, positions himself well, the header's good. and he's met by an excellent save from Selvick, the Watford goalkeeper. Reflexes, brilliant. That was the moment of the match for me in that moment. Although there was one more, of course, which comes from the corner.
27:12Swung in from the right. It's knocked down by O'Shea. You've got Greaves who's on the pitch at that point. You've got Kipre who's on the pitch and both of them in the box. Bounces over all of them and lands at Marcelino. Nunez. He scored two from range. This one's point-blank range. Falls to him, and he shanks it. It's an awkward angle. It's an awkward bounce. But he can't keep his shot down. If he does, it probably nestles into the roof of the net. Instead, he whacks it into the Sir Bobby Robson stand, high up into that one. And even with seven minutes of stoppage time, it didn't really feel in that period that the Lipswitch were going to go and grab a winner.
27:52It felt like that little burst of ten minutes, four chances was where it was going to be, and so it proved. Yeah, it's just one of those moments where you just need one of those to go in, because, yeah, the seventh minute at a time, I couldn't really think of anything that else happened. It was actually a bit of a frustrating moment. I know a lot of Town fans were sort of moaning, like, get the ball upfield, but they were still playing around the back. I think Town were trying to also not let Watford go on the counter, because they had opportunities during that second half. But, yeah, Nunes' chance...

28:25it's a difficult one because it is a tight angle still but he just needed to sort of side foot it didn't he but he went for power and it just went into the next technique's wrong isn't it another mention actually as well I think it was Peachy on game day mentioned about Woodhurst took those chances that Aizon had what do you reckon
28:51based on his performance against QPR, yes, based on his performances maybe before that QPR game, no. So, yeah, George Hurst is one of those where it's either very hot or very cold, isn't it? At the moment, it's kind of swinging one way or the other in terms of when those chances fall to him. This game, he had nothing to work with at all. He just spent the time battling the centre-backs who were a real handful. He ended up getting quite frustrated and getting booked for charging down. I think it was a Banquo at one point in the first half off the top of my head. No, it would have been the second half of that one.
29:28Sorry. So, yeah, would Hurst have taken those? Possibly. Look, Azon gets into the position and that's one of the things that a lot of the players are saying when we talk to them about even Azon. He's getting into those positions to have the chances. That's the most important thing. It will fall for him at some point. It just isn't at the moment. Yeah, very much so. let's actually talk about standout players AJ before we get into the public spat on the pitch of Azor Matasiwa and Jadon Filagene because Kieran McKenna spoke about it and there's been a lot of discussion about it but yeah who sort of stood out for you?
30:08You gave your man of the match to Sindre Wally Igelli because yeah he keeps improving He does and this was another big step forward I'm not sure I'd say it was his best standout performance for Ipswich, but it's definitely in the mix. And a bit like Matasira at the start of the season, it feels like week on week we're seeing new things from him. I was a little bit worried in a way that, you know, he's a 19-year-old coming into this team. He's starting quite regularly now, but especially in this side and the makeup it is, the creative burden that he has to shoulder, especially with no Leif Davis in the team, is heavy.
30:47A lot of it has to go through him. A lot of the Ipswiches attacking thrusts have come from his side and from his creativity. And I thought he stood up to that. I thought he stood up to it with the crosses, his movement, the way he was taking players on. He does not look 19. He's obviously got the size element to him, but the confidence as well with which he plays, so good. I mean, I'm so excited for what he's going to be in the future. But even now, becoming a crucial player in this Ipswich team. given everything he's having to work with, coming into a new culture, coming into a new club, new language almost in a way.
31:27I know he speaks English, but he hasn't at a club that he's played at before, into a new league, a new style of football, new manager. Everything is kind of working against him in a lot of ways for such a young player. And I'm really impressed by the way that he's stepping up for me. So I'll give real credit for him. In terms of others, I thought, I mean, Jadon Fellagene's obviously lucky he gets the goal and there's a constant threat on that left-hand side when he was on the pitch. I thought Jenski used to put in an improved performance based off what we're seeing. Will it be enough to keep his place against Swansea?
32:00Not too sure at the moment, but definitely kind of back to what we saw from him at the start of the season. And a quick shout-out as well to Cedric Kipre, who has been keen to nail down that starting spot. It's been really big for him, hasn't it? Trying to make sure that he's starting ahead of Jacob Reeves. did that here, put in a good performance. There's always that one or two moments that you have with Kipre where you're like, oh, oh my God, what's he going to do? What's happening? I think I said after QPR that he makes defending sometimes look quite hard, but it doesn't mean he's doing it wrong.
32:31It's just like quite dramatic in a way. I remember that West Brom game where he tried to clear a ball and almost bicycle kicked it and picked up an injury, which was quite worrying. but he's been pretty reliable so far apart from that Burrow game. I like what he brought here. The assist is really good. Yeah, those are the standouts for me. And I'll quickly mention Azul Matasiwa as well before I pass back to you, which was an interesting one where I know a lot of people said to me after my player ratings, Matasiwa, clear standout. And I can get that. And there are bits I've seen from him in that game that I liked and some bits where I thought there needs to be more control and out of possession.
33:12there was a nice pass he had going forward where he sets up Syndra down the right he's starting to really get to grips with where everyone is on the pitch I think he's probably just set the bar so high that unless he's putting in a real 8 out of 10 performance I'm like oh yeah it's just another Azul Matasiwa game but yeah maybe one I look too harshly on sponsors man of the match tube wrap pop not too sure about what do you think about that? Was there anyone that stood out to you? Yeah, no offence to Tuba. He worked hard. He's still trying to find that moment, isn't he? Because he's playing in the position.
33:52He has scored loads of goals. At Borough, he was a golden boot winner and everything. At the moment, it's just not clicking for him. I think he does need a bit of a more run in the team. But yeah, spots plan a match. Very interesting, especially because he got replaced, didn't he, as well? For some point? Yeah, he did. He did eventually by Marcelino Nunez. What do you think the answer is with Tupac? Is it a case of playing him up front? I've seen the suggestion with that. It's not working for him in the 10. You need a creator in the 10. Having this kind of second striker role doesn't work. It is getting the best out of Tupac from playing him as a number nine.
34:29Potentially, but then you're going to drop Hurst or Ivan Azan. Or do you play two up front? Oh. You know, so I don't know if Kieran McKenna will go down that route. But, yeah, at the moment, it's just whoever's shirt is to lose, definitely in that number nine position. Hurst at the moment, you know, he said, well, score two goals at QPR, so he's always going to start. So, yeah, I'm hoping with Akpom, he'll get a goal and, you know, he'll score again next week. It's like Sindra as well. I think he needs that first hand goal and I think he'll then go and score. Because, yeah, at the moment, it's Fidgin scoring the goals for Richwich.
35:06But, yeah, interesting Akpom. Any other stand-ups for me? I want to give a shout-out to Daro Shea because he nearly got his head kicked off in the second half, if you remember that. I was right near it as well. Fair play to him. He actually stayed on his feet. He had to rub his head, and I got a picture of him going like... He must have been going... I was about to swear there. I don't know how he was still standing. I thought he was bleeding at that point, to be honest. It was a real heavy blow to the head, wasn't it? Yeah, because it was like kicked point-blank ranged. And yeah, if you were in the Sir Ralph Ramsey stand, you would have seen that.
35:47And it was just really up close and personal. So yeah, shout out to Dara Shea. And I also thought Jacob Greaves did well when he came on and the left-back as well. And he has played there before. Obviously, Leif Davis' injury is not as serious as it could have been, but he may be back after the insassual break, AJ. But he could easily, you know, just like Hurst, come back to life when he's starting at Swansea. but do you think Kieran McKay may look at Jake and Greer as a left back or do you think you'll stick with Ben Johnson? Possibly. It depends on kind of games and different threats that teams will bring.
36:21I need to see proper research into where Swansea are but in terms of their left side you've got Ji-Sung Eom. Is he going to be kind of threatening enough that you'd want to have a natural centre-back playing in that role? It gave it to which more solidity in the Premier League didn't it? When you look at those games where Davis was suspended and we saw Greaves come in. I think Newcastle might have been won. It was Everson won. He had those games there and they looked more solid and he settled in really well. It's definitely an option they can go with. I say more solid, but Jacob Greaves spent half this game trotting up the side of the pitch, playing like a winger, bursting into the box trying to play one-twos and take shots.
37:01I remember talking to Jack Clark about that last season. Clark said it was almost quite funny watching a player with his quite long, gangly legs galloping up the left flank, which I kind of tried to watch and look out for yesterday. And you really notice it when he's running. It almost looks quite unnatural, but he does it really well. At risk of going through everyone in the team, I also want to give credit to Ben Johnson, who wasn't a stellar performance by any means, but he's coming in from the cold. He's not started since, what do I say? He's not started a league game, any game at all, actually, since the defeat at Preston.
37:37So he's been only really used off the bench since the Charlton game. A lot of games, it's an unused sub or not in the squad at all. Comes in, plays left back, has to take on a totally different role. I like some of his set-piece moments. I like the way that he pressed from left back and really tried to get up. Yeah, I wouldn't necessarily have said he would have been one of the standouts on the pitch in terms of individual performances, but deserves credit for coming into an unusual position in a difficult game and trying his best and making a pretty good fist of it, I'd say. Yeah, it was a very scrappy game, so sometimes some people are not really up for that.
38:14But yeah, and talking about feisty and fiery, I saw Matasira and Jameen Filagene, AJ, a bit of a spat on the pitch. I think Matasira was not very happy with Filagene. and of course Filagene was not happy with him not being happy with him. What do we know about this? Because at the time, I was just seeing what was going on in the field. I thought Matasiwa was talking to the ref and then Filagene went vice versa. But no, it was them. I think it was Matasiwa not happy with Filagene tracking back in defensive work. Yeah, this was weird because I didn't really see it at the time that well either. I looked up initially and thought, why is Azul Matasiwa having a go at their goalkeeper?
38:59Then I remembered that both of them are wearing pinky purple kits, and actually that was Christian Walton. Then I was wondering, why is he having a go at Christian Walton? It dawned on me it can't be having a go at Christian Walton. Why is he having a go at the ref? Is there something going on here about certain decisions? Because obviously Town have been frustrated by key refereeing decisions in this game. and then it became quite clear that there were two or three bodies around there and they were really going at each other, actually, down there, Matasiwa and Filagene. In the end, I think it's Kyustre who comes in and plays Peacemaker between the two of them, but it's one of those where, in a game where tensions are high and it's frustrating and the opposition are overly physical, if you're going to start fighting your team-mate, it's just such a bad look, isn't it?
39:42It's exactly what you don't want. The away fans latch onto it immediately. home fans are really worried by what they're seeing. The last thing you want to see is two, let's not get it twisted here, key players, arguably the two best performers that have had this season, come to blows and try and go at each other on the pitch. Save it for the dressing room, save it for the training ground, not when you're out there in front of 27 ,000 people. At least they managed to play that down on the pitch. Then there's that interesting clip of Kieran McKenna going to Matasiwa with some finger wagging. I think saying you don't do that on the pitch.
40:21You do not confront a player like that. You can do it in the dressing room. You can do it in private. But going at it like that in public, it is not what you do. So I'm sure there were some pretty fierce words that were said in the dressing room after that. I'm sure that they will probably carry on into Playford Road in the next few days. Hopefully it will be water under the bridge come Saturday's trip to Swansea. but that was a concern. This is a group where we talk so often about having the right personalities, don't we? And when you look especially at Mattis Seawar and the personality that he is, he definitely ticks that box.
40:58And Philogene's a little bit different in the way that he's much quieter and we don't maybe hear as much from him, but the fact that he's here makes you think he has to be the right cultural fit. But when you see moments like that, you start to worry and question some of those things that the lip switch really builds kind of the core of their beliefs on At least it wasn't a Lee Bowyer, Kieran Dyer moment back in the day, the two Newcastle players having a fight on the pitch that's when it does cross the line but it also just proves it just shows they care as well sometimes you want to see that we're going to hear from Kieran McKenna on that spat because he was asked of course post-match So let's see what Kate I got to say.
41:41I don't know the details of it. Of course, both were emotional in the game, both trying to win the game. Yeah, they know that it shouldn't happen on the pitch. These things happen all the time, training ground behind closed doors. But you don't want it to happen on the pitch because you don't want to give off the wrong impression because the boys are united and those two are. There's just a bit of passion that's spilt over. but they both know that it needs to stay in-house and discuss these things in the dressing room. So, you know, the players discuss that downstairs themselves and they know nothing.
42:13Those two boys will learn from that and, you know, they'll both be ready to help us get the result on Saturday. Yeah, I'm sure they're going to move on from that. And yeah, I think it's split sort of the fan base. I think some people liked it, some people didn't. But as you said, sometimes... People liked it? I think there's some people going on. So they cared and stuff like that. I think, as I said, there's a mixture. The players care. Let's not get that mixed up. The players do care. I'm sure that they're in there often when things don't go to plan or there's individual errors. They always come out and they will defend each other and they're close and they do care about getting this club back to the Premier League.
42:54We don't need to see that. We can trust that. We can believe that. Seeing players care should be big tackles on the pitch, should be staying concentrated concentrated and focused and seeing pressing and doing the basics. Some of the things that maybe have lacked, I mean, the Charlton game is one that stands out for me, but in general, we've seen in abundance with this Ipswich team, apart from one or two occasions, that's what, to me, shows that you care. It's not coming to blows with your teammate on the pitch. That is something where you need to be aware of what's going on. I understand tension and passions are high, and you might be incredibly frustrated with your teammate, but you don't go and do that.
43:38I think I've seen quite a few posts on social media that said if Sam Morsey was on the pitch at that point, he would have grabbed both of them in a headlock and bashed their heads together and said, get on with it. Yeah, that was definitely not something I would see as a positive. I don't think it's something that Kieran McKenna sees as a positive based on that reaction at the end of the match. Hopefully, it's something that will spark some conversations at Playford Road. If it's proof that they care, then I'm glad that it is for some people. It probably isn't for me, but for me, it's doing the basics and showing your passion on the pitch in the way that you play.
44:21Definitely, my friend. Well said. Let us know, ladies and gentlemen, let us know your thoughts on that situation. Yeah, a very interesting one indeed. AJ, I've got a darn old furlong clip to play, but I want to bring up the leaderboard for the predictions. Yes, you do. It banged on. A 1-1 draw you predicted. And obviously, Stu predicted a defeat, which could have happened. You just never know. Me and Hefe predicted wins. My first goal scorer was Jalen Fiddiching, so I switched it. I think I put down somebody to be the first goal scorer. And I was like, actually, I don't fancy him. I forgot who it was now.
44:57I went to Philistine. He got it. So I got two points. You got four points on my friend. So we are now joint. Look at this. With 13 points each. Hefe is bottom. The gaffer. 11 points. So yeah. After all of his taunting. All of his comments. Oh dear AJ. You're getting cut adrift. Well this graphic shows me top. And even though I might not be kind of top in reality. there's a there's a two-point gap mark keith you're getting cut adrift now um this is quite funny actually where i obviously wasn't on the pod i had a bit of a lion yesterday as i get to do for tuesday night games i messaged you slightly not really with it saying have we done the predictions you know what's what's going on and you asked me for mine and i was like oh i don't know i just need to make sure i catch mark that's all that matters so um he actually took the prediction i was going to have i was going to go with the 2-1 town win and i thought i could copy him or um i just go go rogue and go for something else to try and just risk it to catch him and the risk paid off i actually went with leaf davis for my first goal scorer as well he didn't um feature in the matchday squad and the rules are that if a player you pick to score first isn't in the squad you get free pick of whoever you want next um cindro valoregeli didn't score in this game um but But yeah, we had some interesting moments and opportunities.
46:23Between all of us, we picked the entire front four, which I thought was quite nice. But yeah, I'm happy to finally start to build some Predictions League momentum at last, at last. Indeed. And yeah, of course, we'll look ahead to Swansea very shortly. But let's hear from Darnell Furlong, as you spoke to him, AJ, after the game, about the game itself and also his season so far in a town shirt. Over to you, Darnell. Darnell how frustrating was that tonight to not get the win? Yeah extremely, I think we played very well in the game, created enough chances to win the game but it's just sometimes how it falls, you don't get exactly what you deserve but the signs were there of a good performance and a good team so we take the positives Because you reacted from going to goal behind, we expected you to really kick on them Yeah I think that's something we spoke about, no matter what happens in the game responding well, sticking to what we believe is right and we'll get back into the game and should have gone one more as well to win the game so yeah, positives definitely See, it's a missed opportunity then.
47:20Yeah, definitely. You always do, especially at home, not to get the free points. And, you know, it is one of them things that happens. But, yeah, dropped points. But, as I said, good performance and good points still on the table. On a personal level, how are you feeling about your performances at the moment? Yeah, enjoying it. I mean, I think there's still room for improvement, of course. There always is. It's a new group. I think we're still gelling. We're still learning relationships and partnerships. But, yeah, I'm enjoying being here. and we have a very strong squad, so looking forward to the future.
47:50Jadon Filagene loves Portman Road, doesn't he? Another one for him tonight. Yeah, great player. You know, he's so dangerous and we really like getting the ball to him and he produces the goods. So, yeah, he's part of the team doing well. Yeah, in terms of even Azon, it just feels like it just isn't quite falling for him at the moment, is it? Couldn't have got much closer tonight with that header. Brilliant save, another one comes close, but give it time and it will happen. Yeah, it happens. You go through spells and they're a lot more difficult in the moment than it looks from the outside. So it's just one of those things and he'll keep practising and keep getting the opportunities.
48:25The fact that he's in the right place at the right time is the most important thing. In terms of your performance going forward in an attacking sense, I remember coming in, you did really well defensively. It now feels like with those overlapping runs, you've got the assist over the weekend as well, you're starting to really see that attacking side of your game as well now. Yeah, I think it's something that, as I said, will come with time. It's about partnerships and balance of the team. When you come to a new team, you're working things out. And yeah, we're just developing as we go along and knowing when the right time to do certain things are.
48:55I felt like he needed to say something else after that. He just said so, and then when I was putting that clip together, I thought AJ was going to add something else on, but he didn't. But yeah, good old Darnell there. Right then, AJ, we're going to briefly preview the Swans. They're actually playing tonight at Preston. so they've got one day extra... No, less extra day. We've got one extra day of rest. You'll try again. What am I trying to say, ladies and gentlemen? They've got less time to rest and recover and go again. They've got a long old trip up there. I know they're both on the west side of the UK, but that's a long old trip for Swansea to make tonight and having to come back out of a short turnaround ahead of Saturday's game.
49:40It'll be home for them, and obviously Ipswich will have to, in turn, make a long trip over to Swansea on Saturday. Should we have a little look at what the Swans have been like then? Came in thinking they'd be a bit of a dark horse this season. I thought they'd be in that mix. And they started that way. Yeah, they were beaten by Borough on opening day. It was a poor performance, but bounced back from that really well. Beat Sheffield United, home draw to Watford, won away at Sheffield Wednesday. They had that incredible cup win where they came from behind. to beat Nottingham Forest's Cameron Burgess, which I'm sure we'll talk about, scoring twice in that one.
50:17And ever since then, it feels like they've almost run out of steam a little bit. They went to Birmingham. They were late sucker punched by Lyndon Dykes' goal. Couldn't beat Millwall. Yes, they won at Blackburn, but that Blackburn game was the end of September and they've had one win since then. It was a 2-1 win against Norwich, who, as we all know, are abysmal. Beeson by Leicester held at Southampton in a game that they should have lost about 9-0 based on the numbers, beaten by QPR. They did get a draw against Charlton last time out. So they're not one of the worst teams in the league, but there's already some pressure on the manager, Alan Sheehan, because the squad is one that they would expect to be around the top six.
50:56And going into the game against Preston, they sit 17th in the table. Obviously, can move higher with a win and lower if they lose. Interesting when you look at their team from that draw against Charlton, and they ended up playing a back five in that one. Three centre-backs in Burgess, Casey and Cabango. The wing-backs push up high. Key and Tymon, quite good kind of dynamic, exciting wingers. And Ronald Pereira and the one I mentioned before, Jison Eon. But they're relying on those players quite heavily for goal output. And maybe it isn't working that well as Andrew Potnick as another one who has delivered in a couple of games, but not consistently.
51:35Adam Eder started against Charlton and scored. I really like the midfield too I like Gonzalo Franco as that kind of aggressive physical fiery midfielder who they've got there and he's playing alongside Ethan Galbraith who was playing at Leicester Orient last season a bit of a Rolls Royce midfielder, his performances in the Championship have been excellent I think he's probably a Premier League player in the future, so they've got a nice balanced squad but things haven't really fallen for them in the last few weeks and the momentum hasn't really worked for them in terms of their home performances.
52:09They ranked 16th in the division. They played seven games, two wins, three draws, two defeats. Only scored eight goals in those home games as well. So, yeah, hasn't really clicked for them too well. It'll be interesting to see, A, how they perform tonight going into the game and, B, what kind of shape they're going to be in on Saturday with a very short turnaround and fans probably still with the jury out on the manager. Yeah, the interesting atmosphere at the Swansea.com stadium, I think that's what it's called. Classic. Classic indeed. And it has, of course, as we should mention, it has Rossi's outside the restaurant, bar thing.
52:49Yeah, I'm gutted that you still have not visited Rossi's. If I've got an opportunity to do on Saturday, I will go there and I'll get free stuff because my name is Rossi, you know. But yeah, this will be the Cameron Burgess Derby, AJ. I'm sure there'll be a lot of talk about that. Yeah, it's going to be good to see him. Hopefully, he won't be on it and we can capitalise on a mistake or something from him. But yeah, he's obviously a player that I've got fond memories of and still that like, oh, I wish he was still here, but he isn't. Yeah, he's been one of Swansea's top performers and I think he's considered to be one of the best free transfers in the Championship this, well, last summer, this summer, over the summer, we'll go with.
53:39I think he eased the blow of Harry Darling moving to Norwich in a way that was, I mean, he's an upgrade on what Harry Darling offered, to be honest, from what I've seen and from what Swansea fans say about him. Performances have been excellent. He's become a bit of a yellow card magnet. I think he might be on. Let me have a look. One, two, three, four. It might include a cup in there. Yeah, he's picking up a few of them. Big goal threat. Had a tough time against Man City in the Carabao Cup. Made an error that led to them scoring. But, yeah, you know what to expect from Cameron Burgess. We've all seen him week in, week out.
54:17And he'll be staying very close to George Hurst, I think, having watched – he'll be watching clips of those Sindhrabala Egerly crosses from the right, finding Hurst. And I think Sheehan will be saying to Karen Burgess, you know George Hurst better than anyone. You do not give him an inch of space in this game. Very much so. We won't do our predictions for this because I think it's still a bit early. We're still getting over. It's only Wednesday. It's only Wednesday. So we'll obviously share the predictions and see what Heathie and Stu are going to be thinking about this as well. But AJ, any other business as we get close to the magic hour um anything else you want to mention um no i don't think so it's weird it's an international break next week isn't it um it's quite nice in a sense that and i know that you know there's all the jokes about oh aj loves the international breaks i don't especially when there's no ipswich players that was like three who go away these days um but yeah it's good that after this we come back obviously we have the rexum game and what i will dub and i know you call me dramatic but this isn't dramatic the week of hell in terms of the away travel after that you you admitted it was you you agreed you said it wasn't dramatic calling that yeah it's going to be a long trip because you know it was also what we got blackburn or hull hull on the tuesday night so hull away tuesday night oxford away friday night and blackburn away the following tuesday so seven days um if you drove all of them i calculated this is about a thousand miles like return trip that's just for me getting back to cambridge so probably more for such fans it will be brutal that but we're still a little way off that it'll be nice when we come back from that international break to um have like just pure club football through until march which will be good uh but swansea first even though i'm not actually going yes um because it's your birthday isn't it so um what you got planned yeah you're gonna be another year older my friend I don't know yeah another year old a 25 god how scary I hope Mark doesn't listen to that because I'll get some abusive messages sent to me on whatsapp no doubt what I planned I don't know I've been told to leave that up to Sophie who's going to sort that out so we'll wait and see over the weekend but yeah that'll be good I can't lie I didn't fancy spending my birthday and making the long trip over to South Wales I do apologise but yeah safe travels Ross I hope you enjoy it bring back three points yes hopefully and yeah get ready for the international break but yeah if you are going to the game ladies and gentlemen enjoy it me and Stu will be there to bring you all the coverage as standard also got to shout out the KLA Live 3 because tickets are now on sale it's going to be at the Baths in Itchwich once again after the Sheffield Wednesday game December 20th it was a great night KOA Live 2 back in April?
57:19Was April time? March it would have been, I believe. Yeah, they lost to Nottingham Fire. So two KOA Lives before both ended with defeat. Sheffield Wednesday are with a points deduction. They're bottom of the league, so we're hoping that we'll do this one off the back of a big win to take us into Christmas to preview the Millwall game, which of course means a lot to me to look back at the season so far, the standout players, the big moments to talk about whether Ipswich will make it into the Premier League again to be festive and merry and go to the bar that is open late, let's stress that one, the bar that's open late come and ask us questions about Nathan Broadhead and get too drunk again and do all of these things we had such a great time last time we really hope you did too, that's why we've been able to organise this again, the Barstown Ipswich December 20th after the Sheffield Wednesday game we would love to see you and we are so confident that you will have a great time if you come to watch us.

The boys look back at last night’s game, where the Blues were pegged back after some poor defending. Jaden Philogene’s low strike levelled things up, but there was no way through to find a winner at Portman Road.
Then it’s onto a chat about Ivan Azon’s woes in front of goal, stand-out players against the Hornets and the dramatic on-field spat between Philogene and team-mate Azor Matusiwa.
There’s also talk about the upcoming trip to Swansea City and KOA Live 3, while AJ has a panic about the recording button.
