0:38Ross Halls:hello everybody it's me roscoe and welcome to the latest kings of anglia itris town podcast episode and we have a town win to discuss which is very good indeed um a what a difference a week makes ladies gentlemen i'm joined by alex jones as a two-man pod we commence last time we recorded aj we were discussing defeat against Oxford in our Premier Inn in Oxford. Now in our spare bedrooms, as town topple the league leaders, Coventry City 3-0. Stu and Hefe are still celebrating that win. So they were just recovering. So it's just me and you this morning recording this. We've both got the sniffles, but we're going to power through.

1:20Ross Halls:How's things? Oh, dear. Yeah, we do both have the sniffles, but other than that things are good you know what i think we should start by also giving and i understand that from a perspective of people listening we have the best jobs in the world and we're so grateful for all the work that we do and all the support we have and the opportunities that we get all of that but i think it's time to give us a bit of a mention because we've we've also we've been around we've done all the work we've traveled a lot of miles before that commentary game. It's been a busy old week and in particular I'm not really talking about me as much here because I think of the three of us who did all of this, I probably had the least amount to do.

2:02You went and did all women's, was it the women's game in between all that? What was it on Monday? Was it 21? So you did that. Stu literally has had to take today off because I think he would have passed out otherwise. He's basically worked for about six or seven days flat out, which included the drive to Blackburn and back which was a very busy trip and I think he got to the point on Saturday where he looked at me and said look I know I was going to take a day off later in the week but I think it's going to have to be Monday so you know what I don't want to kind of blow our own trumpets too much but well done us and in particular well done you for getting through this with the sniffles as well well done Stu who will probably never listen to this ever it's good that after all of it we have a wind to discuss isn't it Yes, indeed.

2:53Yeah, little tiny, tiny little violins are playing. I know, I know. I can appreciate that. It comes across as a bit much, considering that there are people who pay to do this. And well done to you guys as well. You know what, if you've gone and you've travelled to Hull, and you've travelled to Oxford, Blackburn, or even two, or to be perfectly honest, even one, if you took yourself up to Blackburn, for example, then fair play to you. Again, exactly. so yeah this is kind of the life of it isn't it I think this week has been that kind of seven day period has been a microcosm of how how difficult it can get in terms of the mileage and I guess from our perspective the work going around doing it with the sniffles getting back in from Blackburn at 24 hours after kickoff and then getting up the next day and getting ready to go again so yeah I think we know what we've done a good shift and we really hope as well that you've enjoyed all the contents that we've done in the difficult times, like at Blackburn and Oxford, and in the good times, like Harlan commentary.

3:57And it all feels worth it a little bit more when you have something like this to discuss, doesn't it?

4:03Ross Halls:Yes, indeed. I don't hate things that much, but Blackburn is on my list because the second time I've gone to Blackburn, I've got ill. So Blackburn, not happy. And of course, they had another postponed game, didn't they? Or their game got suspended because of their pitch. but we won't get into that because it's a whole different discussion. But AJ, Itcherstown beat the league leaders, Contra City, 3-0. Big win indeed at Port One Roads. Let's hear from Kieran McKenna first of all, and then we'll break it all down. Let's see what K-Dog had to say. The league leaders, well beaten in the end. You wanted a reaction from this week, you've got it.

4:41Ross Halls:Yeah, really good result. Really good performance from the first goal onwards, really. difficult start to the match but boys sort of stuck together and stuck in there we know the first goal is so so important especially in every game to be honest especially in the home games here and from that point on I thought showed some real confidence in the ball played through the pitch broke the press really really well and defended well and counter-attacked and did all the things we needed to so no it's been a good challenge this week if you word it that way and the group's really stuck together. I said, Jesse, you don't ever want to make any premonition, but I felt it in the group the last couple of days and I thought it was a really resilient performance when it needed to be and showed quality as well.

5:29Ross Halls:What was it that pleased you most about today? Winning 3-0, probably. No, the result was important today. It's more about the week than today, to be honest. I know that when we get the first goal and the confidence grows in the team, I know how well we can play and teams then leave us space and things like that. I know how well we can play. So it was more about the sticking in it in the first part of the game before the goal when we weren't smooth at that point. We were struggling to pose ourselves on the ball. Neither team were. They're setting every set play up and the ball's hardly in play.

6:07Ross Halls:It's not a very good game, but there's lots of games like that in the Championship. We try not to have them, but there's lots of Championship games. There's lots of games like that, to be honest. So in those moments, you just need to stay tough and stay strong. And if you do that, then the quality of our players, quality of our player can come through. So we've spoken about that a few times this year, but it's not always... Learning isn't always a straight line and it's another little lesson for the group today on that. And yeah, showing two sides to us, showing the togetherness that we needed after the other night and in the first half and showed the quality that we needed once we got the first goal to really pull away from Coventry and then defend the lead red as well.

6:53Ross Halls:There we are then. Kieran McEnany's thoughts on the win. But yeah, AJ, this busy period continues because it's another three-game week. Obviously, we've got Stoke on Wednesday and then obviously on Saturday we head to Leicester. But Coventry City, my friend, they were sort of runaway leaders. 50 goals scored 10 plus points ahead of everybody as well but Town big statement, winning 3-0 just your opening thoughts before we get into the nuts and bolts of it all First I want to bring it here it is a three game week as you say but we won't be doing the same monologue next week giving ourselves a pat on the back because the mileage is significantly lower, I'm not going to say well done guys, we managed to do Stoke at home and Leicester away yeah we all sat in that slightly depressing premiering cafe on Wednesday morning and spoke about this game and kind of laughed almost it's like a delirious laugh what it was which we're going to come up against given where Coventry are given their form given the goals they've scored given the fact they'd only lost once all season that was a narrow defeat at Wrexham they score fun that they're a really well-oiled machine and a top team.

8:14And it felt like the absolute nightmare from an Ipswich perspective. It felt like the worst possible opponent, the worst possible game, possibly worse in a way with it being at Portman Road, knowing how the fans felt after that Blackburn game, after the defeat to Oxford. So snap thoughts essentially to come out with a 3-0 win and we can break it all down and discuss kind of how that happened it wasn't a perfect performance it wasn't all smooth sailing but there are no complaints to be had this is the reaction that Ipswich needed wasn't it and when you look at how they went about it when you look at the score line I think that it lifts so much pressure and lifts the mood after a tough period it's amazing how one result can do that isn't it so yeah we'll break it all down we'll have a look at the key parts to it but when you look at it kind of in isolation um this feels like it could be a big

9:14Ross Halls:moment in it such a season yeah very much so i think i'll put in our pod notes later on is this liftoff we won't get into that just yet um but let's talk about changes there's always a big talking point um five changes from the blackburn draw but the same team we lost against oxford um and i remember mckinney mckenna saying like no one mentions you know changes if we win I'm sure there'll be a few people still sort of having little murmurs about still loads of changes will go into the Stoke game saying don't change the team just one against the league leaders you can't change the team but how are you feeling when the team is going to have to you're going to have to but this is where you come into it don't you when you're in the press room just a little peek behind the curtain ladies and gentlemen AJ comes in has the media scram does his normal bits and bobs but the team news is where you really that's when you start your day you're like boom okay how many changes who's come in, blah blah I remember just seeing you just in the zone but yeah, thoughts on the fire changes it is pretty much right back change and the forward four twitching over again Pete behind the curtain, it's different between me and Stu actually because Stu has to do the live blog so his working day starts a little bit before mine, which kind of balances out the fact that all my stuff has to go into print and I'm the one who has to fight the deadlines with reports and stuff like that so um that's kind of how it balances out yes right in the zone as soon as team news drops and five changes is probably fewer than i expected um both she and i did predicted teams and i think we both landed on seven off the top of my head um i thought it would have been maybe a stronger reaction to the draw at blackburn but obviously kieran mckenna has seen the right things in training, has seen the right things from the right players, and has gone back to what the team was against Oxford.

11:05And I remember doing the video before that one that I video that we do. And I thought, and most of the people commenting thought, that this was Ipswich's strongest team. And looking at it now, it's hard to argue that, I would say. So, yeah, it's rotating the front four again. Azon dropped out, Akpom dropped out, Clark dropped out, um case mcateer dropped out and then changing fernell uh ferner oh my god i've done a year furlong darnell furlong and ashley young at right back there we go um so essentially really that the core of it is changing that front four which was blunt at ewood park let's be honest um and even though it is five changes and you can kind of roll your eyes and groan at that number reverting back to the previous team I think is what we all wanted to see and giving the more players who have, let's be honest been more reliable, Nunez Sindra, George Hurst Furlong, giving those players the opportunity to go again in a big old game

12:12Ross Halls:Yeah, very much so and I want to talk AJ about the atmosphere because it was very low key but that's not town fans fault it was just I think just the mood after the last three games I know we it was a bit of a mixed bag wasn't it we beat Hull just about not a great performance Oxford was just dear oh dear Blackburn of course was not good at all so I think a lot of people going into this one as we said earlier probably a lot of people predicted defeats for this one so everyone was like going into it going oh let's see what happens obviously a lot of groans with different bad putts bad touches especially George Hurst it was very scrappy the ball was in the air more than I think I've ever seen at Porton Road in recent times.

12:54Ross Halls:How were you that first 30 minutes where both teams were battling each other, not really much quality out there? Yeah, I think Ipswich held their own up until probably the midway point in the first half where I thought Coventry started to grow and turn the screw a little bit and we can come on to some big, big moments, a couple of huge saves from Christian Walton. nil-nil, that were really important. In those early stages, yeah, I thought that it was pretty cagey. I think that it was a game where the ball was stuck in the middle of the park more than anything. It didn't really get into the final third.

13:35Chances are few and far between. The atmosphere probably plays a part in that, but with a game like this, I absolutely agree with Kieran McKenna. It is the job of the players to lift the fans 100%. and probably you'd have to say in the early stages of that game, they didn't do that. On the flip side, the one thing I don't like, and I don't want to come across and criticise supporters, but mass groans when a heavy touch bounces wide and things like that, I'm not as keen on, to be perfectly honest. I did that, to be fair. No, well, there you go. I'm blaming you. That's the other side of it. I'm not quite as keen on, to be perfectly honest.

14:14when let's be honest, the big target in this game probably with those was George Hurst, with some of his heavy touches and a few loose passes, things like that, for me and whether people agree, disagree or not, I don't know, but for me, when those players are out on the pitch, you give them the support whether the touches are heavy, whether the performance is one of their better ones or not when they're out wearing an Ipswich Townshirt on the pitch, they're trying to do what is best for the team and trying to make the right things happen. You can voice your displeasure when things go wrong, when a game is lost after Blackburn.

14:57You can do that by leaving the stadium or even if you want to boo, then boo, that's your prerogative or complain on social media. But for me personally, when the players are trying to win the game for your team in the 90-plus minutes on the pitch. That's where they need the support. And I can understand where groans come from, and it was not George Hurst's best game. And others probably also struggled in those opening stages as well. That's where they need the support, in my eyes, more than anything. Don't get on their backs in those key moments. Pardon me. Luckily, for George Hurst's perspective, he managed to kind of keep his head aside from probably maybe one or two moments, which, again, we'll come on to.

15:41and Ipswich managed to see through that period where, as I said, they started okay and then it felt like the momentum and the pendulum swung in Coventry's favour and luckily there's a very tall man in goal who managed to save Ipswich Towns Bacon in those moments.

15:59Ross Halls:Yes, indeed. Christian Walton, who of course has come into the team because of Alex Palmer's injury and Christian Walton now with an ever clean sheet to his name and made some incredible saves. Yeah, definitely. in that first half, AJ. What's the pick of the bunch for you? Was it Eccles? Was it Eccles one of the chances? Yeah, that's the first one. That's my pick of the bunch. That's Christian Walton's pick of the bunch as well. He told us, or he kind of broke all that down for us. He's done a little video. I think it went out on town social media where he watched it back and spoke through it a bit as well.

16:33This is brilliant. He's made four saves in this game. Three of them were really big ones. and the two of the four kind of come in this little burst. It was Coventry's best moment. Milan van Eweyck headed over the bar. No, Kane, Kessler, Hayden. I'm getting my right backs mixed up. They played two right backs in this game, Coventry, one in front of the other. It was Kessler, Hayden who headed over the bar. And that was kind of the first warning shot that Ipswich had. But the second, I don't think, it came from nowhere, really. Let's be honest. The centre-backs that Coventry had in open play he just decided to play in the final third.

17:10So a ball comes in. It's Bobby Thomas, who's about, he looks about 6 '8". I don't think he's quite that tall, but he's got these long old legs, picks up the ball. It looks like he's going to carry it forward, and he pulls off a back heel just on the edge of the area, plays it back to Eccles, who has that first-time shot. Of course, because Walton is anticipating the ball's going to be played forward by Thomas, he's already kind of moved to anticipate that shot. So he's caught out of position. Eccles' first time hit, really smooth, really well shot. An initial thought was, wow, he's hit the post.

17:46And then you watch the replay, and he's managed to palm it onto the post and out of danger. Really, really good stop to deny them there. They come again a few seconds later. Efron Mason-Clark picks it up on the left, kind of cuts in. Powerful strike that loops up. Walton has to tip it over the crossbar. and that was the period that I think Coventry felt they needed to score from. That was a really big moment from an Ipswich perspective to see that out from Walton, who has convinced at times and probably had a few other wobbles here and there and is obviously trying to nail down the starting spot when Alex Palmer returns to have those moments, to have those two saves and a couple more to follow after the break.

18:36Really important for Ipswich, really important for him. And the first one in particular, the way he gets down to it, incredibly impressive.

18:44Ross Halls:Yeah, he's got a nice and old showreel of some of his saves, Christian Wolwen, especially this season. Let's hear from the big, I was about to say big Dane. He's not Danish. What am I talking about? He's not. Big guy from Brighton called Plymouth. He's from Plymouth? I think he's born in Plymouth, aren't he? I know he came through there right now. You play the audio and I'll find out where he was born. There we go. Chris, over to you, mate. Christian, what do we make of that? That was a good win this afternoon. Yeah, great win. Obviously, first half probably wasn't at the level we needed it to be.

19:13Ross Halls:But sometimes in the Championship, that's how games go. You have to fight and work harder than the opposition to try and nick something when obviously the flow of the game is not going your way. But I thought we did that and we stuck in there, showed good resilience and obviously a great finish just before half-time and then sets us up well for the second half. but we knew second half it was going to be difficult. Obviously, they're a top team and are doing well in the league. So, yeah, we just need to keep that now and take that into the coming games. Some well-taken goals and you managed the game well.

19:42Ross Halls:Yeah, really good goals. Obviously, buzzing for the lads that scored today. Nice confidence booster for them. And, yeah, good free goals and great for the fans. And a clean sheet as well. You must have been delighted with some of those stops. Yeah, I was, yeah. It's always nice to keep a clean sheet at home. I've been disappointed with the last two performances and not being able to keep clean sheets so it was nice to do that today against a top team Which one stood out for you? The one from Eccles in the first half onto the post the one from Rodoni was some stop Yeah, I think the first one for me I was actually out of position because he tries to play the reverse pass so I've gone for that and then got back in and he's hit it early and got my hand to it so I'm really pleased with that And the first team all season to beat them with a clean sheet as well Yeah, they've scored 50 goals so some going a lot of them from set plays so we knew that was going to be a big challenge today and yeah, we stood up to everything really well, I thought You've given the manager a heck of a decision when Alex is fit that's all you can do, I guess Yeah, I think every player has to do that when they come into the team I've said it before, competition for places this year, last year, year before it's always been something at this club so yeah, I just want to do well for the team and yeah, do what I can You'd be disappointed if you're back on the bench when Alex is fit, surely?

20:55Ross Halls:Yeah, obviously no one wants to be on the bench I've obviously spent a little bit of time on it here and there over the last couple of years so yeah, it's nice to be playing Yeah, I'm sure it is because yeah, to being a goalkeeper and being a sub-goalkeeper must be the most annoying thing because yeah, if there's only one position you can sort of replace so yeah, we shall see what Kieran McKenna does AJ with that dilemma Do you want the answer? Yes He's from Wadebridge which is neither Brighton nor Plymouth. It's nearer to Plymouth. It's in Cornwall. It's about 40-odd miles, about an hour and 10 minutes drive from Plymouth.

21:35It's really in the depths of Cornwall. So there you go. The town and civil parish of Wadebridge. Shout out to you, in the words of Russell.

21:45Ross Halls:Yes, I don't know why I thought it was Danish in my head. I don't know. He really isn't Danish. I don't know why, but he just looks Danish. The big Dane. Big Dane in goal. No, we've not had a Danish goalkeeper. No, we've had a Polish goalkeeper, of course, Bartosz Piotrowski. But we have a few Danes. Anyway, going a bit of a tangent there. Let's talk, though, AJ, about a big talking point before Towns opening goal. And that is George Hurst. Could he have been sent off? Because there's some discussions around it. A big talking point. Yeah, he obviously was on a booking for a stamp. He didn't mean to know it, did he?

22:26and then he basically shot

22:28Ross Halls:when the referee blew his whistle when he was offside and sometimes you get booked because of that what's your feelings on it could Town been 10 men down if George House did get sent off could there have been yes should there have been yes to be perfectly honest there's your answer move on yeah so this this is a tricky one i suppose where so the first yellow card he picks up it is really soft so crap yellow to pick up for me it's a foul at most um this referee was very card happy let's be honest um but the incident stems from that man eccles again who gets another mention um where he after the whistle had blown in the final third, curled a shot up and over into the Sir Bobby Robson lower, I believe it was.

23:28And that was a bookable offence deemed by the referee. Now, it's kicking the ball away is how it's seen. For me, I think, especially given it's the first half of a game, I think that's nonsense. I think it's a nonsense yellow card for Eccles. I think that the rule is stupid. It's not time-wasting. It's not late on in the game trying to see out a result. It's almost like an innocent mistake, and Eccles is booked for that. And then this one comes from a ball that's played from deep. Hurst runs onto it. It's flagged for offside, and then Hurst carries on his run and ends up firing wide of the target.

24:13immediately referees swarmed by four or five commentary uh commentary players who's saying well hang on our man's just been booked for the exact same thing why is that not a second yellow for for george hirst so there's there's a couple of ways to look at it does the referee factor in that it's an offside and he might not have heard the whistle does the referee think well you've got to be more lenient given the fact he's already on a booking for me if it's been imposed on one end, it should be imposed on the other. I can appreciate that Frank Lampard was pretty upset by that, and commentary fans were pretty upset.

24:50I've seen worse refereeing mistakes, but for me, I do think that George Hurst should have seen red. Are you in agreement with that?

25:01Ross Halls:It's a weird rule, though, isn't it? Really? I don't know. Once again, if it was the other way around, yeah. You're like, yeah, send them off, send them off. but by the letter of the law if you're looking at kicking the ball when it's happened on one end yeah what side do you end up on ross do you do you think that if it's happened on one side you have to apply that again and do it on the other side or would you be like well he's already been booked and you don't want to kind of impact a game too early on for something so stupid maybe you didn't hear the whistle where would you land you're the referee what would you do without your your dark blue, can't really say blue because they're both playing blue, your darker blue tinted specs on, where would you go?

25:43Ross Halls:Yeah, I think the ref, maybe he felt it was harsh, the first yellow, and he was like, he needs to, but then he has to keep consistent. He'd book someone doing the same sort of thing. But maybe you think of George Hurst, doesn't know he's offside. As a striker, you're sort of just so in the zone trying to get that goal. and sometimes I know players, they sort of block out the noise. So maybe he just sort of blocked out and he only saw it when he looked up. So I think, yeah, it's a tricky one because he's booked somebody earlier for the same thing. But yeah. He's a lucky boy. He's a lucky boy. I think sometimes refs don't want to sort of send players off too early.

26:29Ross Halls:but yeah, he was quite happy, wasn't he? Paul Turney. I think he was a former Premier League ref. I think he refed the FA Cup final in 2023. So a high-profile ref. I think he didn't do any refereeing last year because he was injured. So he's obviously stepping down to the Championship. But yeah, that would have been a second game in a row, AJ. Well, it's a second game in a row where Town were very lucky to stay with 11 men because Matt Siwa could have been sent off a Blackburn. So So, yeah, it's an interesting one. I think Tower fans were just like, yeah, that's fine. But I'm sure Country fans, they're very angry about it, aren't they?

27:08Yeah, the reaction on social media has been quite strong and you can understand that. I don't think there's been kind of a lot of comments of saying that the referee has cost them the game. I think that's stupid, personally. Ultimately, I don't think there were that many other, if any other, major infringements that went against commentary. I suppose that the other one that they would look at was a moment that Christian Walton handled the ball outside the area, was given as a yellow card. They thought it should have been a red. I'm not 100 % sure what the rules are on that one. Ultimately, it's not been given as a red card, the Hurst one.

27:47Let's focus on this. It's still something that we've sat here and looked at both sides of the debate, haven't we? So if there is another side of the argument, then it's a debatable point whether he should have been sent off or not or how the referee would have seen it. And for me, it's not like commentary about a goal disallowed or multiple things have gone against them. They just missed the opportunity to play 10 v 11. And 11 v 11, Ipswich had the better of it, especially after that first incident with Hurst. And I think the Walton one came soon after that. Maybe that getting into Coventry heads frustrated them, wound them up a little bit, and Ipswich were able to strike.

28:34Ross Halls:Yes, they were. And this was always going to be the crucial, wasn't it, moment. First goal was always going to be key. And the Norwegian wonder kid, Sindra Wale-Agelli, scores his second goal. I'm happy with that. 11 games, he had to wait to get his first town goal. He's now got two and two, AJ. London Bucs is a beautiful goal. Let's praise him because the last two games he scored and he's looking very good. Yeah, I mean, in general, he's improved week on week. He looked a little bit lost at Oxford, but you can kind of excuse that because he's 19 years old. God damn it. And he's just come over to England.

29:19I was a little bit confused, and I know it's a minority. I've seen a bit of criticism coming for Cinder, and I think it's probably because of the goal output. In general, I think his performance has been really good. And for me, he's quite comfortably the best option to have on that right side. We've spoken about his goal at Blackburn, where the composure he showed was really, really good. And this move came kind of as Town swung the momentum in their favour. It wasn't a bolt from the blue. It wasn't the same as Blackburn, where they struck a little bit against the run of play, weren't banging the door down.

29:52They had opportunities to go and get that first goal before they did. They have the corner. It's cleared out and recycled through to Filagene. He cuts it back to, who would you expect in the box, but Cedric Kipre, of all people. The defender, I think it might have been Kitching. You'll see the Kitching on Thomas. I can't remember off the top of my head. Just gets that little touch on it to take it away from Kipre. Ball goes to roll over to Davis. He's ready to make the run, but O'Shea takes it off him, and it's a really nice little bit where, by doing that, it takes all of the pressure and all of the eyes off of Davis in his run.

30:26So that means that O'Shea is able to recycle it to Valarageli. He then spots the run of Davis down the right for some reason. I don't know why he's there. Fair enough. Davis is cross heavy back out to Jadon Filagene, who's able to pick it up and then the cut back to Sindra Valarageli on the edge of the area just opens up, pardon me, the space for him to shoot. the way he curls it's really good the way that he makes the ball dip just in front of rushworth um to make it so so difficult to save um this is the quality that he has on the ball if you afford him space and championship teams in general haven't given him a great deal to work with um if you afford him space and you afford him opportunities he can punish you he has that quality on the ball and he showed that um that should we talk about the celebration as well I know you've lined it up.

31:20Ross Halls:Yes. Yes, indeed. Joe Duggett, who is now our Australian correspondent, a KOA listener, he's recently moved to Australia for some work, and he just basically went, on the next pod, please rate this knee slide out of 10. Yes, Indre, of course. I'm just watching it back now. So smooth. Look at that. Boom. And just how he just sort of like, he's just gliding. Yeah, that's the bit for me. G'day, Joe. Hope you're good for whatever time you're listening to this. The big thing for me, there's two parts of it. One, the way he glides on the pitch, as you mentioned it. Times it really, really well. So smooth, isn't it, the way that he does it.

32:03And the big bit for me, and the bit that raises it from an 8 out of 10 knee slide to a 9 out of 10 knee slide, is the way that he manages to turn his body as his teammates are coming. It's so good. if you go find Joe's Twitter he's posted the clip of the celebration there, it's a lovely knee slide, it was one of those, a lot of the time when we're up in the press box it's like goal, okay great, celebrate type it, put it in the report, whatever, this is one of those times where I actually saw him go and celebrate it, I kind of just saw it in the little bit in the corner of my eye and you could see it was a really good celebration there was more to it, of course he did the Haaland celebration which he did with Marcelino Nunez.

32:47There's a really nice interview on ITV where Sindra Balerageli reveals that Marcelino Nunez just calls him Haaland now, which is great. And Sindra actually said, I'm not sure if Nunez knows my name. He just calls me Haaland. But yeah, I thought that was really good and kind of summed up Nunez a little bit as well. for all the talks of maybe

33:15personality issues, potentially differences from, from the group that we've seen kind of previous iterations, Ipswich town. We had those discussions around Blackburn. This shows as well, what, what the bonds are like in, in the changing room, in the dressing room. And I was really happy to see that. And so happy to see that everyone was delighted for Syndra. Yes,

33:37Ross Halls:indeed what makes a 10 out of 10 knee slide then what's uh what else was needed oh you know what i think that it's difficult because you're looking at you need like wet conditions for me really really good if it's chucking it down you can have like a real muddy lengthy knee slide the length of it is really important can you take it down to the corner corner flag um but he's nailed the rest of it he's nailed the turn he's nailed how smooth it looks um let's be honest as well if it's like a last minute winner or something like that that almost makes it feel a little bit better um i feel like i'm too harsh on cindra here cindra your goal was your goal was brilliant but there is a better knee slides come from you i'm sure of it i'm sure of it yes indeed um and lee evans is up there for me i don't think you're all covering town then it was league one he scored a hatchery doncaster but it was unbelievable because it was right in front of me as well he's like basically knees slide right in front of me and i just was like oh that's beautiful and of course george hirton knee slide in this game as well when he scored.

34:36Ross Halls:So it's not as good though. It wasn't as good. But my normal cliche question, AJ, half-time is 1-0 up. Yeah, I think we're not sort of confident that it's only one, you know, it's won the game, but it was just good at half-time, 1-0 up. Let's see what happens in the second half. The goal was crucial, but the response was going to be more important. I was quite worried that Ipswich would go right, we've got the goal. let's not push on that much. We have to be wary of the threat of the commentary pose, be a little bit more protective of it. And really what Ipswich needed to go do was to push, to kill it off.

35:21And just based on what I'd seen and kind of some of the back-to-basics stuff that we've seen from Ipswich, which I can understand because, you know, you've had things like the results against Middlesbrough and Charlton in recent weeks, and you're coming into this game off the back of a poor defeat at Oxford and the draw against Blackburn where they were appalling. It would be so easy for McKenna to say, right, we've got this lead, let's sit on this, let's try and be patient on the ball, frustrate them and then strike when we find the spaces without trying to force the spaces ourselves. That worried me because I thought a team of Coventry's quality would be able to kill Ipswich in that sense.

36:00And thankfully, Ipswich from the off in that second half went for it and that was what really impressed me was that they didn't sit off at all in the start of the second half they really showed the intensity and the energy to to run at commentary to create chances to stretch the pitch to force people out of position um and throughout to be perfectly honest that second half but particularly in well as well in the early stages let's say it really always felt that Town were the more likely to go and get a second rather than Coventry getting back into the game

36:37Ross Halls:Very much so and Town of course did score their second goal and George Hurst loved playing against Bobby Thomas and Liam Kitching because he of course played against them when they were at Barnsley, that unbelievable night at Oakwell of course also played against them in the FA Cup at the start of the year as well scored in that one as well So let's talk about his goal because he had to show some bottles in the AJ after missing the same sort of similar chance early in the game. But he goes to Mexico, New York, sick goal of the season. Talk us through this goal because it was Cedric Kipre again showing some great, you know, sliding in.

37:17And then, yeah, it was beautiful. Yeah. So the first chance, I'm trying to remember exactly when this was. I think it was quite soon before. I think it might be around the 52nd minute, comes from Kipre. He's really surprisingly good at these. On the ball, spotting the space, and rolling a through ball up to George Hurst for Hurst to run through. The first one was difficult because the defender catches up to him quickly, forces him under pressure, kind of pushes him quite near to the goalkeeper. But the shot is so power to puff. It's really poor, to be perfectly honest. I don't want to jump on a George Hurst hate wagon because it might be an unpopular opinion.

38:00I think he's quite good, but this was a really poor effort from him. He needed something to lift him and lift the fan sentiment around him. It comes from Marcelino Nunez. There were some bits in this game, some passages, some passes from him that was so good with Marcelino Nunez. This probably, given it's an assist, has to be my favourite. There's another one where he has this kind of cross-field pass. And from the press box, we got a shot kind of almost like behind it. You could see the swerve on it. Brilliant. Thought he was excellent in this game. And he gets the assist, breaks into a bit of space, sees the run, a little dink over the top.

38:45Hurst carries it through. My heart was in my mouth at this point because I thought, oh god we've seen him fluff his lines once is he going to do it again um takes this one really well bends it into the bottom corner knee slide not quite as good sorry george there's work for you to be done as well um but yeah he needed that so desperately he hadn't scored since the qpr brace um it's been quite a while since he's he's had regular chances to feed off and having missed the first one, needed a second opportunity for him to bury, gets this one, and at 2-0, it never felt like it was done, because you've seen Coventry score 50 goals before this one, but I was pretty confident that it should be able to see it out with that second.

39:31Ross Halls:Definitely, I've just had a little look. Hurst, of course, is suspended for Stoke, so he can't continue that confidence boost to a scoring, so he'll miss the game because of that first half booking. so if he got sent off it would have been suspended anyway I don't know what the rules would be with that that would be a bit weird if you picked up two would you get a two game bound? I don't know I don't know, it doesn't matter anyway he's going to miss the game against Stoke we'll obviously come on and preview that one in a bit it is a shame for him but hopefully we'll keep him fresh and fit and firing heading into what for him will be a big game on a personal level against Leicester on Saturday.

40:11Ross Halls:Yes, yes, indeed. But thankfully, the man who's going to likely replace him has got confidence because he scores his first town goal at Portman Road. Of course, he scored at Swansea, his first ever town goal, but he finally scores that goal, AJ, at home. The silver win. Ivan Azon, the Spanish striker. Ole, ole, ole. Azon or Ivan, however you want to sing it. Ivan. Ivan, yes, love that. But yeah, commentary, they were trying to push to get back in the game, but just town out too much and they make it 3-0. Yeah, one big chance for commentary for me in the second half, which again, brilliant, brilliant work from Christian Walton, where I think it's a corner that gets cleared out to Rudoni and he strikes it left-footed really, really well, really low, really powerful.

41:02And Walton again gets down to save it. If it's 2-1, that's a totally different game and a totally different finale to it. It becomes such a nervy Portland road if that happens. But it doesn't. And from there, Town, I thought, up until stoppage time, had, again, the better chances in the game. They didn't necessarily have any big ones that tested the goalkeeper. There were a handful that caused problems, some long shots as well. I know earlier in the game, Taylor had one. uh philagine fired wide nunez fired wide i think philagine fired wide again there were opportunities for ipswich to kill it off beforehand but 2-0 going into stoppage time it felt like this was done um and then the subs have obviously come on we've seen it was only four that came on in this game which was a bit of a surprise but yeah he used to uh as on and clark coming on as a triple sub and smonics coming on at the end it's um clark who's involved in this one with a really nice through ball from deep picked up by Azon who has been so desperate for this Portland road goal and for me he almost what he deserves the most credit for is he gets played into the final third and in his shoes with that desperation celebrate front of home fans no one would have blamed him for shooting and he didn't he went with a low pass to try and find Smoddix instead it's cut out by I think it was Kitching on that side and then it comes back out to Azon, this time the space is opened up for him and he rolls it it's a lovely little curling shot he's slotted in, brilliant finish wraps up the game 3-0 it feels like a pretty emphatic win in those circumstances but the big feeling from that third one of course is delight for Azon because everyone bloody loves him rightfully so, it's been pretty tough going for him since that goal.

42:55Swansea, hopefully that will give him, we spoke about confidence booster for George Hurst, hopefully that will give him the same boost as well, because I think there's a pretty decent chance he'll be in the starting line-up against Stoke on Wednesday night.

43:10Ross Halls:Yeah, very likely indeed. Although, Chewbacca on number nine again. Guess not do that. Didn't even get on the pitch. It's an interesting point as well, where we talk about rotation, subs, and subs combining for that third goal. you're looking at um two brackpond former golden boot winner and case mcatea didn't even get on the pitch in this game kim became happy with his four subs and happy with where the game game was at so there's probably a further debate to be had somewhere down the line potentially coming into january about where some of those players are at but um good to have the options that can come off the bench and change games as we always say i thought it's which had the stronger bench in this game jack clark playing a part as on with the goal um great to see sam smoddick's back as well after a kind of mid-level injury layoff with his knee.

43:55It just feels like a happier camp at the moment, doesn't it?

43:58Ross Halls:Yeah, it does. Yeah, it's a timely boost, really, for Richard Town. You know, after, you know, a week can be long in football. You know, Bickle world of, you know, football world, you know, town fans, you know, were not happy, which is fair enough. I weren't happy as well as a town fan. You know, it was a frustrating sort of period. Oxford and Blackburn but okay this wasn't, it doesn't feel like a 3-0 sort of match was it? I think Contra, you know Stu said he got a few comments from Contra fans saying well beaten but you've got to take credit because Town, you know, got the win, big three points clean sheet at home against the league leaders AJ, do do we have lift off?

44:44Ross Halls:We don't want to get 2k away, it's only one game We've got to sort of back us up against Stoke. But do you feel this is a big moment in the season for town? Going back to that kind of first point, I mean, commentary were second best in this game. Let's be honest. They were. I'm not saying that Ipswich blew them away, but they were. Ipswich were the better team in this match and ends up with a convincing scoreline. Is it lift-off? We've had false thorns before, and that's why I'm going to say I don't know at this point, because we had that little run around September. So we had a tough start, of course.

45:19Winless up until beating Sheffield United 5-0. Then it's like, wow, you've beaten Sheffield United 5-0. It's that lift-off. You beat Portsmouth. The draw at Bristol City wasn't great. Then obviously follow that up with the win in the derby against Norwich. But then it's two steps back. Big blow at Borough. Even bigger blow against Charlton. then you have that kind of six-game unbeaten run where you win four of them, some big wins on the road, but then you're set back with Oxford and with Blackburn. So I don't think anyone can say for sure that it is. For me, it has to be. If it's just going to be in the mix for a top-two finish, this has to now be the moment in my eyes because if you haven't had the confidence from a 3-0 win against the league leaders, if that hasn't given you enough to work off to kick on now, what will?

46:12What's going to do it? This has to be, for me, the turning point. If Ipswich are going to be successful, that isn't to guarantee that they are. Let's be honest. And it's also not necessarily going to be the case that they're going to have a perfect season from now on. There will be setbacks. They will lose games. They will be frustrated. They will play low blocks and find it hard to get through. They will come out on the wrong end of games where they've been second best, things like that. But this is now the point where we have to see a bit of consistency on the pitch, in the starting line-up, and keeping themselves in and around that kind of conversation towards the top of the table.

46:52So yeah, that's kind of given you a bit of an airy-fairy answer. I appreciate that. Hart says yes this is the moment that Ipswich will lift off and they can get a positive result at Stoke and capitalise on Leicester in a bit of a shaky position going into Sheffield Wednesday but my gut knows that we've been stung with this before so let's see I think we'll have a clearer picture probably at the end of this week as to where we're at

47:22Ross Halls:Very much so but yeah let us know ladies gentlemen your thoughts and feelings on this. But yeah, Town, of course, moving up to fourth on the table, as you mentioned, AJ, which is looking pretty good. But let's talk, AJ, about other players that stood out in this game. I want to have a little discussion about Daro Shea because he's obviously taken the captain's arm band from, you know, Sam Morsey and he's been getting a bit of criticism because of bad results this year. But for me, in this game, he just showed so much leadership and obviously he just doesn't care about getting hit in the head because there's times where he's on the floor and he's still hitting the ball.

47:55Ross Halls:But for me, he's showing really good leadership and you hear good things behind the scenes that he does as well with the foundation. But yeah, he's proven to be a really good leader at Itchristown, isn't he? Yeah, I think we've heard a lot of good stories about Dara O'Shea and the person that he is. I think that players can be difficult to deal with and be around. And I think that every single story I've heard about dar o'shea and the thing that's been said about dar o'shea has been overwhelmingly positive so there's there's elements of how you are as a player and a captain but also how you are as a person as a captain i've heard good things and obviously it's different as well because it's used to having a very intense captain and and the kind of person that would you know if you do something wrong or in in a good way potentially would be the kind of person to grab you by the scruff of your neck and throw you in the right direction if that makes sense with sam and the intensity that he has and in a lot of senses that works quite well and when you don't have a captain like that then there's almost an element of well where's your passion for the badge where's that kind of thing oshay is a very different leader in that sense and there's no right or wrong or any element like that um but i've seen a lot of traits from from oshay that i really liked obviously it it becomes harder when it's kind of when the chips are down and fans are frustrated you want to see someone digging into his teammates saying come on let's get together and and turn this around and O'Shea is more the kind of person that will sit people down quietly I think and and have a word and try and dig deeper to the root of issues I'm sure he has been I'm sure there have been plenty of inquests after a tough run um but let's be honest he has the respect of the dressing room he's shown on and off the pitch what he's about and I think we can be really happy with where he is as a captain and marshalling a back line in this game that I thought was excellent I thought he was really good I thought Furlong not spectacular but solid in that right back role Davis limited in what he could do going forward but handled himself well against Coventry's right side and for me that the standout man in that back line Cedric Kipre so close to the man of the match for me.

50:15Brilliant performance. Really, really good. Showing what he's capable of, both off the ball in terms of winning duels. Won the most duels of anyone on the pitch in this game and on the ball. Should have had an assist. Created. Opened up space. Really good player when he's on it, when he's at his best. He's a joy to watch at times.

50:39Ross Halls:Yes, indeed. But yeah, I felt like it was a team performance. you know sometimes we've seen wins this season it's just been individual quality you know Jalen Fielder doing goals at Porton Road but this one felt for the first time this season really was a team performance and yeah beating the league leaders for me it's a statement because I know I think Kieran McKenna was asked that by Stu in the press conference we haven't got that clip to play but he said it's not really a statement but for me I think it is it's a big three points for town going into Stoke AJ but any other business from the the commentary city game anything else you want to mention these players have rightfully come under a lot of fire and a lot of criticism for their performances um especially of course against oxford and in particular against blackburn but even potentially you have to look at the way they played against hull and not being able to break down wrexham and things like that they have come under fire and I've thought it's been harsh at times but definitely recently when you look at what happened up at Blackburn I think they deserved every inch every ounce of criticism that they faced and I think that in return for that as well they deserve huge credit for a performance like this I know that they had things that went in their favor I know it wasn't a perfect performance but you have to show some hellish mental strength and character to come away from that game against Blackburn where you've been panned by everyone, by us.

52:09We've sat here and talked about how rubbish they were on that night. Fans have done it. The manager's done it. To come back with a matter of days to prepare for the league leaders at home and to put in such an improved performance, I think deserves credit. So credit to everyone who was involved. Credit to Kieran McKenna. Credit to the starters, those who came on, those who supported from the bench and and didn't come on. All of them deserve a lot of praise for the mental strength. I think they've shown this is going to be an even bigger test now. Can they carry it on?

52:42Ross Halls:Yes, that's the big thing. You've got to back it up now, Itchwich Town. But it felt like it was very nice at the end, full-time scenes. It felt like the fans and the players were together celebrating that. And then, yeah, we've got a quick turnaround because we had support on road on a Wednesday night against Stoke City, AJ, who, in a way, have come out of nowhere really with under Mark Robbins. They're sick from the table. They will be wounded animals because they did get beaten. Is it 4-0? Yeah. Last time out against Jeffwood United or White Bromelain. So they're sort of coming up again, aren't they now, under Chris Wilder, Jeffwood United.

53:17Ross Halls:But yeah, Stoke, we're going to do a massive more big preview on them for the boot room. So if you're a subscriber, that is our preview show. So check it out when that is out. But yeah, you'll just snap thoughts on Stoke because yeah, doing pretty well. They're 6th in the table. Yeah, they've had some... Actually, I'm looking at their results recently. It's not a great one-winning five. So, yeah. This is probably an interesting point now with Stoke. I think I said around the time that Ipswich played Hull that Hull are going to tumble. I did a bit actually looking at the teams that Ipswich had to track down, and I said, I looked at Stoke and thought, you know what, I'd be surprised if they fell out of the top set.

53:57I think they've got enough in them to stick it out. and the dynamic can shift incredibly quickly because right now I think all of the smaller teams potentially bar Millwall, and I'm keeping Burrow as well in the bigger mix because I think they'll be in the mix, of course, and I expect Millwall will as well, but I think Preston will fall off and I think Stoke, looking at it as well, will dip down the table. They've got a really solid squad when you look at it and good players in there, managed by a manager, Mark Robbins, who's achieved great success at Coventry City and a really good pickup for Stoke.

54:34And he's taken a bit of time to get them going, but they look good. Their recruitment's been sharp. You look at midfield, they've got Thomas Rigo, who's linked with the move to Ipswich before, has stepped up well. Devine Mbama, who was linked to the move to Ipswich, has been really good, really impressed by him. Silber Thomas, in particular, for me, someone who's been pretty average for a lot of his career, to be perfectly honest, is now starting to show seven goals, five assists. Good player. Millian Manhooth as well, someone I've kind of eyed up as a potential lip-switch target in the past, showing his quality on the flanks as well.

55:09So a good team, a well-balanced team, but a team that I think are losing some momentum quite badly. And from their perspective, maybe this could be a good thing. But looking at it right now, I think this is a nightmare fixture for them. Coming off the back of four defeats in five, their only win coming against Charlton. they've lost to Hull, they've lost to Sheffield United, beaten by Coventry and Leicester before then, you're now coming into Portman Road. That's going to be a tough one for them. So yeah, we'll break that one down in more detail. Definitely not a team to be underestimated with the quality that they've got.

55:40But again, given the form that they're in and what they're coming off the back of, I think that this is one that they'll look at as a difficult game, Stoke.

55:51Ross Halls:Yes, indeed. Yeah, check out the boot room when that drops. That is available for subscribers. so check out obviously our subscription to watch that. AJ, I think also quickly look at the leaderboard. I think you are leading the way. Obviously, you've got the 1-1 draw bang on against Blackburn, which I'm sure you weren't that happy about really deep down. That was my full-time celebrations. Has that stayed the same? Because obviously, Mark predicted a win against Coventry and Stu got Cinder Valarageli as first goal scorer I had a 2-1 defeat and George Hurst which came close with Hurst let's be honest but yeah does that keep me top?

56:37Ross Halls:Yeah just have a quick look so yeah 19 points AJ you've got Hefe's got 17 points Stu's on 15 and on bottom alright for now on 14 so yeah you are sort of closing the gap on me you know you have 5 points your bottom yeah I'm bottom 14 still more than Norwich have yeah there we go beautiful we'll obviously share our predictions probably tomorrow or Wednesday on the day of the game and hopefully I can finally get some bloody points because I've had a bit of a I'm predicting positive results although I predicted a draw against commentary but then yeah you obviously predicted a defeat he didn't get any points, but Pifi obviously got a point.

57:25Ross Halls:And yeah, as you mentioned, Stu picked Sindra to score the first goal. He got two lovely points. But yes, my friend, as we record this, people maybe listen to this when the FA Cup draw has been announced, but that is tonight. How do we ball 18? Who would you like, my friend? There's some non-league teams still in it, but this is when the Premier League and Championship teams come in. I actually did put a message in our group chat the posse chat so I'm going to go through that very shortly but who would you like an EFA Cup third round draw my friend if it's going to be a championship or league one or probably even a league two team let's have it at Portman Road if we're going to be away from home and it's one of the big boys again that would be alright going up to Liverpool it's not even from a personal perspective I think the narrative around Cinder Bala-Rigeli playing at Anfield's great.

58:20So if you had to give me, I'll give you three that I like the look of. Everton for the new stadium would be one to tick that one off because, annoyingly, that's the only ground in the Premier League I've not done and will be the same for a lot of Ipswich fans. Of course, I have to say Cambridge in League 2, away from home would be nice because that would be quite a short commute for me. That would be 15 minutes up the road, that would do. and I'll throw in a rogue one and I feel like you would hate this Ross to be honest, if we're going to go on the road how about a bit of Western Supermare down a little bit further below Bristol it's a little way down they're National League South, they're the second lowest ranked team in the division same division or same level as Macclesfield so they are also in the mix as well.

59:16I like the sound of that. I feel like it's the kind of game that would see Epswich getting knocked out.

59:21Ross Halls:Give me a bit of Western Supermare. Why not? I don't hate it. There's worse ones on this list I'm looking at. Someone said Blackburn. Steve Lewis. No, we don't want to go Blackburn for the third year. Please kick him out of your KOA. Right now, Steve, you'll listen. I'm kicking you out of the group because that was just a horrible take. But then Peachy went Wigan. I actually swore at him in our group shot. I actually just went FU because I was like, no, we don't want that. I know there's a few people who live up north and I think Harvey the Sweetbush Prince were saying, I don't mind anything northern to be fair.

59:57Ross Halls:And he's there so it would be good. But then Steve went, I want a new ground. So Macclesfield, Western Supermare as you mentioned, Forumwood, Salford, Mansfield, Blackpool. I've been Blackpool again. Or Exeter. Been Exeter. Don't want to go there again either. Grinsbury Town away, Mark Jubster said. I've not been to Grinsbury, so that'd be a new ground. Good food. Good food. Yeah, fair. Edmonton away, Callum. Good old Callum. Yeah, Callum will be good. Bainsey, I know, lives near Newport. He said Newport away. God, are they in the straw? Yeah, they're in the draw. They're doing really bad. They're doing really bad, aren't they?

1:00:36They are. Do you know who they're managed by? No. Christian Fuchs, who won the Premier League with Leicester City. That's amazing. I love that. From West Ham will be obviously another one, given relationship links there. You know what? This will be unpopular. But A, it should take a lot of fans. B, it's not that far. And C, I'm sure that Sophie, my girlfriend, would like to combine it with a shopping day over the weekend. Milton Keynes, Dons would be quite good. Let's be honest. I mean, imagine as well, because there's a certain amount of allocation that goes to away fans. I remember watching West Ham, Bristol City at the London Stadium.

1:01:20I was there, and Bristol City, I think, had about half the stadium. Can you imagine having like 12 ,000-odd Ipswich fans in the away? That would be great.

1:01:31Ross Halls:In League One, I think it was the promotion season. I think we had like 7 ,000 there. I'd say 17 ,000. No, we didn't have 17 ,000. We're still a thousand there, which has looked amazing. They would outnumber the MK Dons fans. Really, that would be awesome. Did you see that that actually has happened this weekend? Sorry for going off on a tangent. Luton managed to outnumber Fleetwood Town fans in the FA Cup, which I thought was also very, very funny, even though Luton then ended up going out of the game. Well, there we go then. Awkward. The thing is, wow, it's which can be at home. So anybody at home is fine.

1:02:09Anyone at home is fine. If it's going to be at home and it's like a League One championship team, I think we'd be happy with that.

1:02:16Ross Halls:Yeah, pretty much. So we shall see. But you could be listening to this driving and you've already seen the draw. So tell us. Who is it? Shout at us right now. Right now. We've got this team away. And I'm like, oh, no. But we shall see. Ball number 18 in the draw. but AJ, a two-man pod in the books. Final thoughts, another week ahead of games. We've, of course, got Leicester on Saturday. So, yeah, it just never stops. No, it doesn't. At least there's less travel. Let's go and get some strepsils and some tissues and a few bits like that. Patch ourselves up. Go again. We've got a busy day ahead. I need you on X-Blues monitor stuff.

1:03:01and yes it's definitely going to be a jam-packed week two big exciting interesting games coming up stay tuned with us of course ladies and gents for all our coverage of them yes indeed

1:03:14Ross Halls:and yeah hey Drizzy Aaron Dryden Heathie's boy scored a perfect hat-trick for Swindon so that could be another narrative if we get Swindon that would just be Aaron Dryden talk for that game so can't we get him on the pod yes Swindon at home Aaron Dryden's return of Porton Road. We're going to try that. If it's Swindon against Zipswich Town, we will ask the question of the Swindon Town Media team. Will you let Aaron Dryden come on our podcast? That'd be brilliant. Yeah, Heathie's got a signed shirt. Maybe he can get a signed Swindon shirt. The narrative there. Love that. Hopefully it's Swindon at home at Porton Road.

Ross Halls is joined by Alex Jones to reflect on Ipswich Town’s 3-0 win against Coventry City.

The boys look back at the game, where Sindre Walle Egeli, George Hirst and Ivan Azon were all on the scoresheet to secure a convincing victory against the Championship leaders.

But should Hirst have been on the pitch? There’s talk about his lucky red card escape, stand out performers from the match, and whether this will finally be the moment for the Blues to kick on after previous false dawns.

There’s also chat around Stoke City and the FA Cup draw, as well as an illness update after a week on the road.
