In short
Ipswich Town’s “big week” in the Championship—back-to-back home wins and clean sheets, beating Coventry 3-0 (league leaders) and then Stoke 1-0—plus discussion of tactics, key players, and what it means for the title race. Also covers KOL Live 3 being postponed to 2026 and looks ahead to the Leicester away game.
Guests
Roscoe (host) and Dr Stuart Watson (co-host), both long-time Ipswich supporters and regular podcast contributors.
Key claims
Ipswich’s turnaround is driven by character, better defending, and improved chemistry; they’re now joint meanest defence in the division and have “core” players emerging. Jadon Philogene’s off-ball work has improved, making him a complete team player. Dara O’Shea is an effective captain and defensive leader.
Notable examples
Philogene’s early (1:43) goal vs Stoke from a worked team move; Ivan Azazon’s missed chance; Christian Walton near-post save; Stoke’s 57% possession but limited end product; Nunez’s three assists in four games; Ipswich’s next match at Leicester (Casey McAteer derby).

Yeah, just about good enough ladies and gentlemen, but thanks for joining us as always. It's just a two-man pod once again, but this time I'm joined by the doctor Stuart Watson, my friend. We're here to bring you bad news and good news. But first of all, how are you? I'm very well, thank you. Yeah, not too bad. What do you want me to address? Good or bad news? Let's get the bad news out of the way first because, you know, there's been good news as well. Agreed.
0:47Yeah, bad news is KOL Live 3 has had to be postponed. no major dramas there but we've decided to shift it to 2026 to make it as as good and big as
1:00Stuart Watson:possible as we can so apologies to those of you who've bought tickets you will receive some communication in due course about full refunds and all the rest of it and we hope you will join us in the new year for the rerun of that and hopefully a bit like Blackburn second time around I was going to say it'll be better in terms of the result hopefully better in terms of the performance than Blackburn take two but yeah KOA Live 3 postponed but over to the good news Ross Yes indeed because Town made a back-to-back home wins another clean sheet as well as a beat Stoke one goal to nil in the championship and yeah open and forth Stu because it's been
1:42Ross Halls:what a week it's been because last time we were recording a lot of podcasts, me and you actually, and AJ, was in Blackburn discussing a 1-1 draw where we scored late on, but the last two games beat the league leaders 3-0 and now beat Stoke 1-0. Yeah, we're recording this around 2 o 'clock on Thursday, so I was going to say it's exactly a week on, but it's not quite.
2:05Stuart Watson:It's eight days on, isn't it? Because last night's game was Wednesday, I lose track. But yeah, essentially a week or so ago was a sort of a mini post mortem of where Ipswich are at in the season. Not good enough performance at Blackburn. By general consensus, Kieran McKenna and the players didn't hide away from that. And off the back of some unconvincing displays as well, I think there was a little bit of angst about where this season was going. I said the mood felt like it was on a knife's edge and that a big show of character was required. Fast forward, as I say, eight days, back-to-back home wins, back-to-back clean sheets.
2:50Coventry, obviously, top of the league. Stoke had been flying and were right up there up until fairly recently. That's a major show of character, I think, from the players to bounce back the way they have.
3:04Ross Halls:Yes, indeed. And now fourth up in the table, five points away from second. This league is just bonkers. It just proves Cowan haven't really needed to play that well to get to where they are right now. But yeah, we're going to be discussing the game. Obviously, Jadon Filagene once again. But let's hear from Kieran McKenna, first of all. You spoke to him, Stu. After the game, here's his thoughts on the result. Yeah, I really enjoyed the game, to be fair. I thought it was a really, really good game. both teams certainly contributed we scored a brilliant team and individual goal really to start the game off then to be fair Stokeford played really well in the first half they came and had a real go on it, full credit to them I think they came here and had a real swing at it and pressed high, that meant there was a lot of space and we almost got through a lot but we also probably rushed it too often because there was so much space We went for the goal every time and sort of give the ball back to them a little bit quick and then they were moving the ball well and causing some problems and we really needed to dig in, but the boys did that.
4:13And I thought the second half was a really good performance, to be honest. I thought we played well with the ball, we started to make some extra passes, played through the pressure, defended well and had chances to counter. It was probably the only thing, was not getting the second goal that keeps the game alive. I thought it was much, you know, a better performance than Saturday, to be honest, where we go and score two goals in the second half and win 3-0. I thought today the flow of that was much greater. We just didn't manage to finish one of our moves off. So when you don't do that, you have to see it out at the end and the game's always open.
4:46And we managed and did that bit well and the crowd were outstanding and really gave us the push we needed as well. So good night's work. It's funny that you said that the Stoke game, especially the Contra game, although you've just been the league leaders 3-0, but yeah still we're going to reflect on the whole game let's start with the team news because
5:05Ross Halls:normally this is a debate like oh god he's made six or seven changes but he's just basically one in four change as on comes in for George Hirst who's suspended and yeah I think a lot of people going wow he's actually done it he's not done all those changes yeah that's what I predicted going
5:22Stuart Watson:into this one and it's what I hope for and it's what a lot of people hoped for it was an easy decision really isn't it when you've just beaten the league leaders 3-0 if you can't keep with the same team it was just the one in force change as you say then when can you it's Saturday to Wednesday as well so it's not quite the same tight turnaround as if it's a Tuesday night game and both games are at home as well so you're taking away the travel aspect of it um yeah no no brainer to to stick with that team kieran mckenna did touch upon that in his post-match um that that doesn't suddenly mean that this is the same 11 that's going to play week in week out there will be different scenarios throughout the season and moments where you know some rotation is going to be required and other players will need to step up But I just feel now with the halfway stage of the season, fast approaching, that we're at that little tipping point now where a core of a team needs to emerge.
6:24Stuart Watson:And chemistry and relationships are given the chance to grow and flourish. And I think we're starting to see some of those combinations of play. Last night, we started to see some real patterns of play starting to develop in front of our eyes, which is what we've all been crying out for. yeah very true and I'm sure the less the game there will be rotation because it is a quick turnaround Wednesday to Saturday um and it's an away game uh but we shall see um but Stu I did
6:51Ross Halls:not expect a fast start in this one um or I don't think I was even ready for Jalen Philogene's goal but one minute and 43 seconds or something like that on the clock um he just keeps just trying to beat his own best goal scoring you know just you know he's got his own collection now isn't he of you know goals of the season awards um he's sent for the season um just another beauty of a goal stoke just give him so much base to finish obviously good connection with martin and nunez um yeah thoughts on this goal my friend and jayden finagene is just unbelievable important road yeah the first thing to say about this is that it's a brilliant team move and it's a classic Kira McKenna team move that starts with Christian Walton playing a short pass.
7:39I think it's Kipre that advances it. And then Leif Davis strides up the left before the ball eventually sort of arrives at Jadon Filagene.
7:50Stuart Watson:Quite often he wants to dribble inside. This time it's a square pass. He doesn't just stand there and admire it. He follows the ball in. And it's a neat little cushioned layoff from Marcelino Nunez. And, yeah, Jadon arrives right on cue to hit an exquisite right-footed shot. High, curling past the goalkeeper and into the top right-hand corner from the edge of the box. And as you say, it's another brilliant one from him. Seven goals now. Puts him back out on his own at the top of the goal scorer charts for Ipswich. which all of them have been at Portman Road and pretty much all of them have been pretty impressive strikes, haven't they?
8:33Stuart Watson:He was asked to rank it post-match. And the fact that a goal of that strike said maybe second or third tells you everything about what he's been doing this season. Yeah, very true. We got some audio actually from Jadon Philogene, but I want to quickly just talk about his sort of journey, you know, from, you know, he signed at the start of the year in the Premier League, you know, struggled.
8:54Ross Halls:but in the Championship he has really got better and better. There's been a few games where maybe I wouldn't say he went missing but maybe he wasn't involved. But since the Matt Siwa sort of clash, he's just been unbelievable from tracking back and everything but also obviously scoring the killer goals. But yeah, what's your thoughts on that sort of his journey this season? It's a good point about the Matt Siwa flashpoint. What was that, the Watford home game? Yeah, and obviously, you know, I think that was some frustration from his teammate about maybe there's times where he tries to do too much or he ends up sort of a bit lightweight and on the floor.
9:37And his talent, I don't think, has ever been in question in terms of his ability to beat a man with his dribbling qualities. his shooting has clearly been on evidence but equally he can frustrate
9:54Stuart Watson:and has frustrated at times in terms of maybe trying to do too much on his own not working as hard off the ball and when I put my predicted 11 piece together ahead of Coventry I put Jadon in the team but said, you know, is he a team player? This is a chance for him to answer those question marks Well, he's certainly answered that with the last two performances. Put the goal aside, put the exciting on-the-ball work that he does to one side. What he's doing off the ball in these last two games has really impressed me. First of all, he's played both matches in their entirety, and his physical output has just been phenomenal.
10:39Stuart Watson:The way he's, you know, he's probably, I didn't think there was anyone much fitter than Leif Davis, but Jadon Filagene can't be far off in terms of up and down, pressing full backs, nicking the ball, making interceptions. He's starting to connect a little bit more with teammates. I know he's working really hard on that partnership with Leif Davis down the left. He talked about the goal with Nunez being something that they've worked on in training as well. So, yeah, we're now starting to see there's a reason that Ipswich paid£20 million for him. There's a reason that Ipswich went back in for him in the January, having missed out on him first time around in the summer, because Kieran McKenna thinks he's got all of the attributes to be a top player, much in the same way as Omari Hutchinson before him.
11:28The messaging has been you've got to do the other sides of the game, the ugly part of the game, and he looks to have responded to that for sure. Yeah, he's become a big fan's favourite straight away. And, of course, the celebration, which was, of course, an AMR celebration when he was at PSG. And yeah, Philogene obviously spoke to the press after the game with Brenner from BBC Suffolk,
11:47Ross Halls:AJ and Callum as well. So let's hear from Jadon, who is a man of many words, or no, not many words, but he does a lot of his talking on the pitch, doesn't he, Stu? A few words, I think, yeah. Yeah, play the clip, Ross. You can hear a little bit from Jadon. Let's go. Jadon, a couple of terrific wins, Coventry and then tonight against Stoke. How did you sum up the last few days and what it says about you as a team? Yeah, it's been good to be fair. We've been working hard on and off the pitch and it's all paying out. So yeah, we've got to keep strong, keep going, heads up. How big a lift is it when the team scores as early as you did today?
12:22Yeah, it gives us a boost in the game, of course, like you can see, but the job's obviously still not done when we score early. So we just have to keep our mentality and keep a clean sheet like we did today. Where would that one rank for you this season? You're almost a one-man goal of the season competition. What, my goal? Where would you put that one today on the list? Probably my third or second. You must know as soon as you cut in from the left, get it on your right-hand side, and as soon as you hit it, did you know they were in? Yeah, kind of working and training me in a natural. Just giving the one-two and then just set up for the shot.
12:53So when it left my foot, I knew it was going to be a good shot. I didn't know it was going in, but I knew it was going to be a good shot. Jaden, can I ask about the celebration, the golf celebration? Where's that one come from? That's from my favourite player, Neymar, to be fair. I saw him do it when he was at PSG, so I just thought I'd do it. Have you tried to style yourself off him? Has he been a big inspiration for you? Yeah, Neymar, Ronaldinho, yeah. Probably my top few players. Getting Cedric involved, that was pre-planned, I assume. Yeah, 100%. He said he wants to get in Vos. I said, let's do it then.
13:20And you talk about your own goal of the season competition. You mentioned second or third.
13:24Stuart Watson:I assume there's only really one that stands out at the top for you, isn't it? I assume it would be the Norwich one. Yeah, the Norwich one is probably my favourite so far this season, yeah, 100%. I was just going to ask about that Norwich goal. You must have been feeling the love after that one. Yeah, 100%. A weaker foot as well, so, yeah, keep going, working on my left foot. I think it's pretty strong right now, but as long as I keep working, I'll probably get more goals on my left, to be fair, yeah. I was going to say, you say weaker foot. Do you have a weak foot? Both seem pretty strong. Shooting-wise, probably not, but passing-wise and stuff, so I can work on my left even more.
13:54And in terms of your form at the moment, how happy are you with the way things are going? Yeah, quite good, to be fair. I've just got to keep playing, keep playing good, get my head down and keep going. What about that partnership relief down the left-hand side? The two, you seem to connect well. working and training like me and Nacho, mainly for you just understanding the game between each other very well. We've got to keep that connection going. Yes, indeed, Stu. And out of these seven goals, put you on the spot here. Didn't ask you this pre-show, but what's your favourite out of the seven so far?
14:23Obviously, the Norwich game
14:23Ross Halls:is a big one, but is there anything else that stands out for you? Yeah, it has to be Norwich, doesn't it?
14:29Stuart Watson:Just because of who it is, but also the goal itself, I think, even if you took Norwich out of it, would would stand alone in terms of the spin before it the fact it's off his so-called weaker left foot as well um still accelerating when it hits the net aesthetically that was very very pleasing and it happened to be against Norwich as well so that that's way out on its own um I'm trying to remember the order of the goals against Sheffield United I think probably the step-overs in the box and then the thunderous finish across the goalkeeper might be might be second in there or do you know what I'll put last night's up in second I think because it's it's the winner it came against really good opposition yeah let's let's go with that as number two and then and then the one against Sheffield United third that I've just mentioned like it yeah as you said earlier as well as a team goal as well A bit of individual brilliance from Jadon,
15:32Ross Halls:but then also the team player, you know, Marcelo Nunes. For me, when I was reading AJ's player ratings, it's gone a bit under the radar. Three assists in the last four games from Nunes, Nacho. That's pretty good from a player now playing in the 10 role. And yeah, Nunes is now settling in the team. Yeah, I'm just trying to think what those assists would have been off the top of my head. Certainly one of them, I think, will have been a corner in there. what else have we got I'm just trying to think back to the goals you put me on the spot there but yeah it's three assists in four games the Hurst goal yeah of course the ball over the top for Hurst in the Coventry win which was a beaut yeah we've been debating the number 10 position all season haven't we for Ipswich that Schmodix wasn't hasn't been in the goal scoring form of old He went into this season really excited by the fact that he was going to move inside to his favourite number 10 role.
16:35That didn't quite happen for him in terms of goals at the start of the season. Then there's an injury setback. Tuba Akpom, another former championship golden boot winner. Again, not quite happened for him. I think there's reasons behind that comes here. Half fit, having had no real pre-season at Ajax. He's not had a run of games. He's been in and out, but nevertheless, not quite happened for him. and it opens the door for Marcelino Nunez, who I wasn't straight on the bandwagon of he is the answer from game one, but he's certainly growing on me in that position. I think it changes the way he's more of a creator than a box crasher in terms of the way he plays that role.
17:23The creativity has jumps off the pages forward passing, But I think what also goes unnoticed is his fitness and his ability to cover a lot of ground.
17:35Stuart Watson:He essentially can press high and make it almost two strikers at time, but he can also drop in and make it a midfield three. I'm reliably told that in the Coventry game, his running stats, a distance covered was higher than anyone since Ipswich have been keeping such data. It was that much ground covered. So for him to produce that performance against Coventry and then go again and play most of the game last night is really good. And we're at a stage now, you know, I've mentioned now the physical output of Leif Davis, Jadon Filagene, Nunez. Kieran McKenna prides himself on his sides outrunning on position, being fitter than the opposition.
18:25It's taken a bit of time for players to get up to full speed and robustness, but it feels like now that quite a few are hitting those physicality levels that are required. Yes, indeed. And I'm just looking at the games played now, 20 games already this season, which has just flown by. but yeah this game Stu McKenna enjoyed it it was a weird game for me in my point of view when I was watching it definitely that first half because when you look at the first half stats Stoke had most of the possession I think 60 plus possession which is very rare at Porton Road
19:01Ross Halls:how are you sort of watching the game thinking yeah Stoke you know they came here to play fair play Mark Robbins you know set up a good team Stoke of old was long throws Peter Crouch up top and stuff but this Stoke team they can play football yeah kieran mckenna said pretty much they're one of the best footballing sides in the division and you could see why he said that in that first half their reaction to going behind in the second minute was a1 they had more possession than ip switch uh they looked quite slick in terms of their final four combinations um but didn't quite have the quality at the end of it to carve open chances.
19:41Their best two chances came really immediately in the aftermath of that Philogene goal. Dara shared to make a last-minute challenge on Junho. In the box, Christian Walter made a smart near-post save from Salva Thomas. But after that, it was lots of pretty patterns of play with no real
20:01Stuart Watson:end product, which has reminded us a little bit of Ipswich at times in the past. It's been an accusation we've thrown at Ipswich possession without purpose, etc.
20:14But yeah, I mean, Stoke, I can't remember what Stoke finished on possession-wise last night, but they had the majority of it. They certainly did in the first half. It's another example. These last two games, while you look up that stat, these last two games are another example of Ipswich are just better suited to playing teams that, as Kieran McKenna said in that clip earlier, want to come and have a swing at it and take them on in a football match because they've got the quality to hurt you in quick sort of counterattacks and out of possession.
20:44Stuart Watson:So, yeah, there's been struggles against deep blocks and teams that want to make it nitty gritty, but, you know, against the likes of Coventry and Stoke, which have been well suited to it. And the main thing is keeping it tight at the back. You know, that was the issues earlier in the season. and they seem to have resolved a few of those or addressed a few of those concentration issues now, I'd say. Yeah, and very well organised. Yeah, 57 % possession Stoke finished with. So, yeah, so Town had to be fit to keep running at that Stoke
Read the full transcript
21:18Ross Halls:and just making sure to be well organised. But I want to mention Stu in the first half, Ivan Azan. My cliche, bless him, line will be coming out because, yeah, his name was in lights, my friend. but unfortunately those lights were in the back of the the uh ramsey stand because uh not a good miss big chance and it could have you know bit town on the butt could have punished you know not score that killer second goal um but yeah ivan is on uh just a big moment yeah it was and you're right i think it was that 18th minute we'd seen signs that stoke were a decent outfit by that point and the 1-0 lead was fragile and it felt for a long time like the next goal, which ultimately didn't come for either team, but the next goal was going to kind of be crucial.
22:10Yeah, glorious chance, that one. It's a long ball over the top that ends up with their goalkeeper, Johansson, racing off his line. Doesn't quite clear properly. Crowd shouts shoot to Leif Davis, who obliges. Low rifled effort. Johansson's kind of on the edge of his box by this point, beats it away. It lands at Azon's feet, who takes a good first touch to steady himself. A couple of defenders on the line, and it's just a bit of a wild, lashed effort that ends up, like you say, in Rosehead, unfortunately. The crowd, I feel, are kind of behind Ivan because of his likeable personality, because of his kind of all-action style.
22:56But he's left a few goals out there so far this season, hasn't he?
23:00Stuart Watson:He's got two to his name, the one at Swansea, the one at the death against Coventry at the weekend. But he should be on more. He gets himself into some great positions. And I'm sure the messaging to him behind the scenes will be that's a sign of a good striker. It's not like you're not getting chances. You are. So keep doing that and your fortune will turn. I hope that proves to be the case. But, yeah, no question, I think, that George Hurst is the man in possession of the striker's shirt. And maybe Azon's best role is kind of being this off-the-bench energy injector going forwards. Yeah, very true.
23:38Because, yeah, he does run about, doesn't he, Azon? And, yeah, I think he's, you know, he's just unlucky with some of his chances. But that one was not good. But, yeah, as we said, it was just well-organised teams, Stu. The defence, that is now our defence. Don't switch it around. Kipra again, solid.
23:57Ross Halls:Daro Shea as well, just leading by example. I was saying this to AJ on the last podcast. There were a few people questioning, oh, maybe Daro shouldn't be captain. But for me, every game, there's just little moments I see. He's a bit of a, I wouldn't say he's a silent captain, because he can be vocal. He's not obviously going to be Sam Morsi-esque. But for me, he just leads that team. and he's just solid in the fence and he heads everything. He just blocks everything. He's unreal. Yeah, I thought he was a strong contender for Man of the Match up there with Philogene. Last night, the Coventry win, Kipre was kind of the standout from the back line immense.
24:38This one was Dara O'Shea.
24:40Stuart Watson:He just read danger so well on the few occasions where Stoke were working good final third positions. time and time again. He was there to snuff it out. His now what I would describe trademark raking crossfield balls from deep are becoming a big weapon for Ipswich. And as you say, in terms of his captaincy, by his own admittance, if you haven't read the interview, the exclusive interview I did with Dara during the last international break, he admits I'm very different to Sam Morsi. I'm not the same sort of intense character that he is, but he leads in a different way. and the players really respect him, and he leads by example with what he's doing on the pitch.
25:23Yeah, he says it took him a little while to kind of balance getting his own form right with sort of the responsibilities of captain, but I think he's getting there now with that,
25:34Stuart Watson:and he's been one of Ipswich's most consistent performers this season. Yes, indeed, and at full time, there was a kid with a sign saying, and can have your shirt. And normally I'm like, stop doing that because it's a common modern day football thing. But you should have seen
25:52Ross Halls:the smile on Daro Shea's face, just seeing that sign because sometimes defenders, they probably don't get asked as much. It's more than Jayden Filagene's of the world. But you should have seen Daro and obviously Daro's got big teeth, isn't he? So just the massive smile on his face was just lovely. And of course he went over and he spoke and I think he had to go back in the dressing room and get another shirt or something like that. but yeah just just lovely to see and yeah to be fair I think most fans these days I don't care if you're a defender whatever position you play you just you know you want their shirt but yeah it was a nice little moment but yeah and I mean look again the the our people speech ahead of the derby was genuine it came from the heart and Dara again go back and have a look at that interview he talks about that about how he's felt like Suffolk reminds him a lot of of home being back in Ireland and how how warm he's felt um the embrace of the Ipswich fans and
26:55Stuart Watson:how this has just felt right for him how the you know he could have gone back to the Premier League in the summer there was interest but he he stayed here for a reason and a big part of that is the connection that he's feeling with the county and with the people um we talk about different styles of captain he's he's kind of got a matt holland air about him actually i think you know in the way that he he holds himself he conducts himself in terms of a lot of stuff he's doing quietly behind the scenes in terms of throwing himself into a lot of the foundation community work and also demanding as captain that others do the same that that you know there aren't people kind of ducking out of things like that and really hammering home that sort of cultural message as as well of what it means to play for for Ipswich as a one club uh county so um no I think anyone who says that Dara Shea shouldn't be captain is is talking nonsense and I think he's uh he's really growing into it and I think it's he's someone that everyone should be really proud of yes indeed good to see and yeah hopefully he can be part of the Irish group that will go to the World Cup next year if they can qualify um and yeah he can join a town captain who's gone to World Cup of Ireland.
28:04Of course, Matty Holland did that in 2002. It would have been 2002, obviously during the Mick McCarthy-Roy Keane situation, which still blows my mind there's going to be a film about that, Stu. I'm interested to see how that's going to be played out. Very good indeed. Perhaps Matty Holland could play himself in that film because he's barely aged, has he? Looks sickeningly young still whenever I see Matt. Scored in that World Cup as well. Maybe we made some comparisons there. Maybe Dara's destined to
28:35Stuart Watson:go and bag over in the States next summer. They've got to get there first, obviously. Of course. That's going to be good to see.
28:43Ross Halls:But then, yeah, second half, Stu. Town, of course, were looking for that killer goal. They didn't need it, thankfully. How are you feeling, sort of going in the final moments? Anything that stands out? I have to admit, I was sort of busy sending photos to you, boys. I didn't really see much in the second half. Well, I did. but it wasn't really many chances were there really uh stoke obviously didn't threaten us too much um because town was just so well organized but anything that stands out for you uh look it was which looked the more likely to score in the second half i think like against coventry i really like the way they started the second half i think the messaging would have been we're playing a good team here it would be suicidal to try and sit on on a lead so you know They came straight out of the blocks in the second half and looked the more likely to add to it, to be honest.
29:32I was thinking my 2-0 Philogene first goal scorer bet was looking, or prediction for our prediction league, was looking pretty good because I felt like if anyone was going to score again, it was Ipswich. Leif Davis had one where he got in down the left side of the box and sort of dragged his shot across. Azzon headed straight at the goalkeeper from a corner. Aaron Cresswell made a couple of big blocks in the box against Sindre and Jenska Euster. When he came on, Nunez late on had a curling effort that was kept out full stretch by the goalkeeper.
30:11But there's always that nagging doubt in your mind. As well as Ipswich had contained Stoke, you just know while chances have been and gone
30:18Stuart Watson:and the scorelines, there's only one goal in it, that there could be a sting in the tail. and when two minutes went up on the board towards the end, that could have been a bit of nerviness there. And Kieran McKenna's mentioned it in the clip that you played earlier. The crowd were fantastic last night and there's been a bit of debate around Kieran McKenna's made a couple of little, barbed is probably not the right word, but just a couple of little comments about the atmosphere being difficult at Portman Road and there's reasons for that. And I don't think he's having a go at anyone. I think he understands that Ipswich have needed to do more, this new look Ipswich have needed to do more to win the trust of the crowd, to win some hearts and minds.
31:03It was understandably really flat against Coventry, certainly in the first half. But that win, I think, boosted the crowd going into this one. And when the team needed the fans, they stepped up last night. at the back end of that game, I thought the noise they made, it was just a constant encouragement, really dragged the team over the line.
31:28Stuart Watson:And I think that was maybe my main takeaway from last night, that you could feel this kind of bond starting to grow between the team and the fans again, which was great.
31:40Ross Halls:Yeah, very good. And I will admit, I was shocked. It was like two minutes in 2025. You never see that. That's very low. Although there wasn't much stop-start. this game was pretty free-flowing. I think the refs allowed it. There's only two yellow cards in the game. It wasn't many free kicks. So, yeah, two minutes. Although I'm sure that can feel, like many people, feels longer than two minutes because definitely when you're just 1-0 up and you're trying to defend that goal. They did have a chance, didn't they, Stoke, at the end. Walton had to obviously make a save. They had a corner as well. I remember watching the Swedish goalkeeper for Stoke.
32:17Ross Halls:He was eyeing up the bench. he sort of ran up, he got into the box and then I think their goalkeeping coach and Mark Robbins went, no, no, come back to the halfway line. When the final whistle blew, Ipswich were streaming up the pitch in numbers Jenski used to have the ball and was the keeper out of his net or he was sort of backpedalling furiously I mean that was the chance to seal it and Jens was absolutely distraught that the ref blew his whistle at that point because he smelt blood but But no, they saw it out. I mean, there was one chance, I think around 70 minutes, where a low cross just evaded Sam Gallagher,
32:55Stuart Watson:someone who Ipswich have had bids knocked back for in the past when he was at Blackburn around the six-yard box. That was about their best chance in the second half. The one that you mentioned, Christian Walton, it was like a cross-come shot that may have been going in at the far post. There was certainly someone attacking it at the far post. Christian did really well to stick out an arm and claw that behind for the corner. But in general, Ipswich defended really well in this game. Back-to-back clean sheets, three clean sheets in a row at Portman Road. I don't know the last time that happened.
33:31There's goals in this team, no doubt about it,
33:34Stuart Watson:but they had to stop giving away really cheap ones against and putting pressure on themselves. since that Charlton defeat. They seem to, I mean, Oxford aside, which was a bit of a step back, they seem to have got to grips with some of that now. And remarkably, they're now joint meanest defence in the division alongside Stoke after last night. So that's obviously very good indeed.
34:04Ross Halls:Yes, it is. And if you want the lottery numbers, ladies and gentlemen, still as well, just ask me because I got the prediction right bang on 1-0 so it's been gone under a bit of radar where I was actually in bad form I was obviously bottom of the table and I was like oh this is not good I think I've been maybe not predicting very well but I don't know going into this game I thought I can't see Stokes scoring many goals can't really see us scoring many goals in this one and I thought 1-0 when we went 1-0 up in the you know as we spoke over at Jennifer I thought damn it my prediction is going to be completely wrong because I was not expecting an early goal.
34:37Thankfully, though, it was 1-0, and I'm happy with that. But you, of course, got the Jalen Philidjian first goal scorer, so you get two lovely points for that. You actually get three because of the correct result. I actually am going to update live on the show, Stu, the leaderboard, because it's always good to see.
34:54Ross Halls:Because all of us predicted a town win, which is always good, especially the last few weeks. We've been predicting defeats, draws and stuff. But yeah, going into the game against Stoke, AJ was top of the table. with 19 points. He obviously gets a point and he actually gets Philidgy. He picked it. Janine Philidgy will be the first goal scorer. So he gets three points. So he's on 22 points. You're on 20 points. I am going to be, I've got eight points because I've got correct score and correct result. So I'm on 18 points. And then if he did get, obviously the correct results, he's on 19. So I'm still bottom, but it's very tight.
35:38AJ 22, top. Still, you're in second, my friend, with 20 points. Hefe is in third with 19 points. And I'm bottom still with 18. But I'm now clawing myself back up to the table. It's as tight as the championship table itself. Very little, isn't there, between third down to 16th going into last night's games. There was nothing between them. I'm sure it's still pretty much the same there. Coventry at one stage looking like they were going to open up a big gap, but they've now lost to Ipswich, Drew, on Tuesday night against 10-man Preston. So their lead has been whittled down in the last couple of games.
36:19It's wide open. I don't think it's the... I don't know how I feel about this championship season, and whether it's not as good as we've seen in terms of quality. I haven't seen anyone sort of completely wow me. I was waiting to see what Coventry were like in the flesh. They were clearly not at their best at Portman Road on Saturday. But, yeah, I don't think we saw the best of them. Stoke, actually, and I think Leif Davis said afterwards, he felt that they were the best team that Ipswich have faced this season, and I can see why he'd say that based on certainly their first half performance. But it hasn't got that top-end runaway quality.
37:03We're not going to see three or four teams get 90-plus points this season, I don't think. But maybe that's just because the bottom end of the table has improved. We've seen it in the Premier League now.
37:17Stuart Watson:We're saying the struggles in the Premier League was that actually it's not just your man cities and Liverpools and everyone else that are top quality, but teams that have hung around in that division for several years have raised their standards slowly and slowly and the whole standard's gone up. Maybe that's the case in the championship now, that just the quality is a lot more spread out. But it does feel like an opportunity this year for Ipswich, doesn't it? To be fourth, having in most people's books nowhere near hit top form yet, says that this is a year where the door is open to go and take it.
37:55Stuart Watson:Because who knows, next year, the final year of parachute payments, it could be far stronger with Wolves and whoever else comes down. And if Leicester or Southampton don't go up as well, it could be a very different story next season. So, yeah, hopefully this can be a big week for Upswich to kick on and take advantage. Yeah, very much so. And yeah, I think we've won nine games, but then drawn seven, lost four. In any other championship season, we're probably in mid-table. But because of just how open the league is, which for me is exciting. I know a lot of people say it's not as good this year, but it's just like anybody can beat anybody in this division.
38:33And yeah, that top six right now, Coventry, Middlesbrough, Millwall, us, Preston, the whole. I think that's going to change. You know, as you said, Kupiar are just out of there because of goal difference.
38:43Ross Halls:Millwall, who are third, are on minus two goal difference. which is just crazy. And, yeah, Stoke, they're only four points away from us. Southampton, yeah, I think, yeah, West Brom, who are in 16th, they're only six points away from sixth. So, yeah, it's bonkers. But I do love the championship because anybody can beat anyone, as I said. I mean, who knows? Southampton are in, I think, fairly ominous form now. They seem to be getting themselves together. even Sheffield United, you know, got off to a horrendous start and changed manager. And we saw them at their, at their low point at Portman road, but you know, they're now stringing some results together.
39:26And sometimes in the championship,
39:28Stuart Watson:you have a team comes from right down from the depths of the divisions can suddenly sneak into the playoffs. Um, it's more fun, isn't it? It's more games. You go into every match, not quite knowing what you're going to get. And you know, every time I turn up at the ground, people go, what do you reckon tonight? and I genuinely have no idea. You can make an educated guess based on a lot of factors, but ultimately we haven't known which version of it which is going to turn up at any time this season and we never know what the championship's going to throw up as well. I like it. And there's no VAR as well.
40:04Stuart Watson:So, yeah, Prem felt quite slow, didn't it, at times? I much prefer this. Yeah, me too. And, yeah, of course, the game's come thick and fast as well. This has been one hell of a run of games, hasn't it?
40:18Ross Halls:What's that? Seven games? Or when we go play Leicester, seven games in the space of... 22 days. 22 days, of course. So, yeah, a lot of games. Mixed bag result, but hopefully we're going to end it with three straight wins, Stu. Leicester City up next, a trip to the King Power. They had a bit of a mixed bag season. They're currently 13th in the table. Seven wins, seven draws, six defeats. and they threw away a two-goal lead against Russell City last time out. How are you feeling for this game? And yeah, we're back with Leicester now the last few years, in the Premier League last year, and then obviously in the Championship the year before.
40:56Yeah, ding-dong battles in that Championship promotion season. A pair of 1-1 draws, wasn't it, with late goals for Ipswich in both of them. Sam Morsi in one, Jeremy Sarmiento in the other. and then obviously Leicester come down with Ipswich last season and they've still got a lot of Premier League quality in that squad but like Ipswich have found the transition back to the Championship quite difficult obviously a bit different for them in terms of the heights that they've reached in modern times I don't need to go through all that again Premier League winners, Champions League quarter finalists, etc, etc.
41:44So being back in the championship with the kind of the financial stuff hanging over them and talk of points deductions and all that has probably hit them quite hard. I've watched a couple of their games on the TV. I can't remember. We were in a press room just looking at their results.
42:02Stuart Watson:I think it was the Blackburn home game in early November, which they lost 2-0 home to Blackburn. and you could sense the King Power Stadium there turning really toxic in that one and they've struggled at home. Yeah, they find themselves 13th in the table. Certainly not an outfit to be underestimated when you look at the players they still have at their disposal, but I think this is an opportunity for Ipswich with a bit of a spring in their step to go there and hopefully turn the crowd on Saturday. Indeed.
42:35Ross Halls:And of course, it's the Casey McAteer derby. Could he have his first time back at the King Powell since joining town? He's obviously not featured the last few games because, yeah, he's not been needed. You might roll your eyes for us. Collectively, people might do that. It's not impossible we start on Saturday. I know now the feeling is that's it. He's found his team. We've won two games. Don't mess about with it.
43:00Stuart Watson:Yes, put George Hurst back in once he's back from suspension. but don't do anything else. Different scenario now. Quicker turnaround Wednesday to Saturday. These last two games, as I've mentioned a lot in this pod, have been high-intensity games of football, open games of football against Coventry and Stoke. That will have taken a lot out of these players. This is the final game of a really busy block. I think there might be not mass rotation, but there might be one or two bits of freshening up. Sindra was one of the more quieter players last night. Casey McAteer is someone whose pace and physicality I think might, in Kieran McKenna's mind, be more suited to these away games.
43:49Stuart Watson:So I wouldn't rule him out coming into this game, certainly against his former club as well. Yeah, it's absolutely fair. I think that I don't mind a few changes because it is a quick turnaround. But just keep with the core. you know that you know your bread and butter players um but yeah obviously Hurst coming in against his former club McAteer wouldn't mind that uh anybody else do anything else you know like back four is fine isn't it yeah it's the unnecessary rotation that I think needs to stop now and by that I mean randomly changing the right back for the odd game here and there and dipping Ashley Young and you know keep Darnell Furlan I've from day one I've said I'm not a big fan of centre-half rotation.
44:33Stuart Watson:Jacob Greaves can count himself really unfortunate because he started at Swansea and Hull, played well in both of those games, both wins. It was unfortunate to drop out, but Cedric Kipre is the man in possession of that. Like you say, I want to see that settled back five now. Parma was back on the bench last night, but no doubting that it's Walton's shirt to lose at the moment. Furlong, O'Shea, Kipre, Davis, Matasiwa is another one that deserves a mention from last night. He wasn't perfect. He did give away a chance with a slack pass, but his energy, I think he leads the way in the championship for the number of interceptions.
45:13Stuart Watson:The way he smells danger and cuts out danger is exceptional. He's nailed on the team sheet. And I think probably the partnership with him and Taylor is looking better structurally for the team. I don't know if it's a fitness issue with Jens Kajusta. his kind of knee issues that he's managing are well documented but he seems to be able to kind of light it up for 20 minute periods in games but can fade and I don't know if he's covering the gaps that Davis leaves and doing the kind of the unseen off the ball work in the same way that Jack Taylor has been doing recently so physically how's Jack Taylor I think the TV cameras caught him Martin texted me last night saying And there was that stoppage in the first half and he was sick on the pitch.
46:02So I don't know if that's just pure exhaustion or whether he was a bit of illness going into that game. I don't know. So maybe Jens starts this one on Saturday. I don't know. Top end of the pitch, Hurst comes back in up front. I've just talked about McAteer or Augelli on the right. And then, you know, we spent a big chunk earlier talking about just how much physically both Nunez and Filagene have put into the last two games, can they go again? I hope so, but I don't think... I wouldn't have any issues with Jack Clark starting on the left, given what he's done this season. And he did well off the bench last night.
46:43I don't know what the alternative would be.
46:46Stuart Watson:I'm not convinced about starting Atpom as the 10. So hopefully Nunez can rest, recover, and go again on Saturday. I'm back in Nunez to start. and then yeah, I mean, I left, yeah, two back, I don't know, just not playing. So that would be, you know, so if we're going to say McAteer as well, that's potentially the entire front four changed again on Saturday and I could see if, barring Nunez, you think. Yeah,
47:17Ross Halls:but then once again, like the Hurst one, that was enforced, so I'll read into that like, okay, Azon's come out to bring Hurst back in because he was suspended So, you know, I don't, yeah, but yes, I'd like to see Nunes start again if he's good to go. And then, yeah, Clark, he's pretty good away games in Eiffel-A-Gene. He's still waiting for that first away goal. I'm sure he'll have a moment soon. I mean, we've got Schmoddick back in the mix now as well, lest we not forget, who has had two little cameos off the bench. He had a quite lively moment last night where he almost set up Akpom for a goal with a cross.
47:55Stuart Watson:I don't think he'll be ready to start just yet. He's come back quite quickly from a minor knee op. But, you know, the options are plentiful. Yeah, they are. And we've obviously got this Christmas period coming up as well.
48:11Ross Halls:You know, after this, we've got a nice week on the training ground and then Sheffield Wednesday at home. But then obviously you've got the Boxing Day at the Den against Millwall. and then it's basically Friday, Monday. And then Thursday for obviously the New Year's Day against Oxford at home and they're obviously Contra City games. So there's a lot of games coming. Fick and fast once again. So once again, a squad will be used. But Stu, another two-man pod in the books. Any other business you want to mention, my friend? No, I mean, we talked a bit about predictions on this. We do sort of predictions for blocks of games, don't we, for the website now and again.
48:50and I had a little look back at the ones that I'd done for this period, and actually Ipswich are bang on where I thought they would be. I just got the results a little bit muddled up. I'd gone for a win. I went win against Wrexham, draw at Hull, beat Oxford, draw at Blackburn, lose to Coventry, beat Stoke, which would have put Ipswich on 11 points.
49:13Stuart Watson:Ipswich have got 11 points from those games, just in a slightly different order, of course. they draw v Wrexham, beat Hull, lost to Oxford, da-da-da, you know the rest. So to cap it off, I've got Ipswich to draw at Leicester in that block of games at the weekend, which gives them 12 points from a possible 21 from that seven games in 22 days, which I think would be a pretty good return. I keep saying it, the average of two points per game is automatic promotion form and Ipswich have been ticking along in and around that number for quite some time now. Certainly over the last 10 games they've hit that.
49:54Stuart Watson:I would imagine they've probably done it since the summer transfer window closed as well, really. So second top goal scorers in the league, joint meanest defence and a sense that still haven't hit top gear at the moment. Yeah, maybe there is no Top Gear. Maybe this is the way it is. It's just be solid. Let your individual talent shine when it can. I don't know, but it's certainly been a big week. It has been indeed. And also, since we last recorded, Stu, we got Blackpool in the cup at home. Thank the Lord. Because I don't want to get a Blackpool. I've been there many times. You've been there many times.
50:42I think we've both seen them lose 6-0 there. Ross, is there replays? Have they scrapped replays now? Yes, for now.
50:50Stuart Watson:I think until the latter stages. The latter stages, I think.
50:55Ross Halls:People may be shouting at us now. No, there is replays, guys. No, I don't think so.
51:00Stuart Watson:I'm pretty sure they got rid of them in the early rounds, didn't they? Because there was the big hoo-ha about it. I didn't think of that. The big boys throwing their weight around and how it took great opportunities away from them. teams and all the rest of it. But it saved us from a potential replay at Blackpool. So I'm happy about that. On a Tuesday night. Yeah, that would have been not fun.
51:26Ross Halls:But yeah, a winnable game for town, but I'm sure we won't take them lightly. Of course, the Lee Evans derby. He'll be returning to Porton Road, which will be good to see. Although someone commented saying it's also the Elkhorn Baggett derby because he was on loan there, obviously last year. They've also got Hayden Colson. Anyway, let's not talk any more about that. But yeah, of course, Blackpool at home in the FA Cup third rounds. But yeah, onwards to Leicester, Stu. King Power Stadium. You're going to go for a draw then? Is that your prediction? Don't know. Let me have a little think about it because obviously that prediction was made weeks and weeks ago and a lot has changed since then.
52:04I feel it's going to be a very different vibe at the King Power than it was last time we were there. That was at the back end of the Premier League season.
52:10Stuart Watson:Ipswich were down as dead rubber at that stage. It was the Vardy part. That was the Vardy show, wasn't it? The big send-off for Jamie Vardy. This time around, far less buoyant, a lot less pressure.
52:28Stuart Watson:It's just hard to know how much these last few days has taken out of Ipswich. Yeah, if you're putting me on the spot, I'll stick with the draw, and I don't think that would be a disastrous result by any stretch of the imagination. No, not at all. But yeah, this will be the Casey McIntyre homecoming and he will finally score his first town goal. You're really fixated on this Casey McIntyre narrative, aren't you? I like it.
52:51Ross Halls:Yeah, I know he's not had a good start at town, but going back to the place where he started and came through and we signed him from, yeah, he'll want to have a little moment, won't he? So hopefully he's done. It's written. Sindra's got his first goal. Even's got his first goal. Tuba Akpom's got his first goal we're just waiting on Casey now
53:15Stuart Watson:when better to do it than back at his former club on Saturday, you heard it here first Rostradamus has spoken
