May contain errors.0:08Ross Halls:Hello everybody, it's me Roscoe and welcome to the latest Kings of Anglia Itteristown podcast, the final one of 2025 as the year comes to the close and we're bringing you a two-man pod. It's me and AJ, Young Guns. I can probably call myself that until potentially July, because I will be turning 30 in July. But yes, AJ, my friend, we're recording this after the Coventry City win, big win for Kieran McKenna's team. But we haven't recorded a podcast since Christmas. So how was your Christmas day, my friend? How are you? Hello, I'm all good. Welcome back, everyone. It's been a while since you've been able to listen to the Kings of Anglia podcast, sponsored by Stardust Spirits and Molecular.
0:57So welcome back. I hope you all had a good Christmas. I hope you had a good Christmas, Ross. Mine was good. It was quiet. It had to be because, of course, we had to get up first thing the next day to go down to London for a game that I don't think is going to get too much coverage on this podcast episode because this is the final pod, as you mentioned, of 2025. and it's let's be honest it's been a bit of a tough old year i think we'll probably touch on that later in the show so let's let's have it as the positive let's talk positivity let's let's bring it in because there's a lot of good vibes isn't it um we've had christmas we're coming into the new year we're in that weird middle nether zone yeah exactly where you don't really know what day it astonished me to find out it was new year's eve tomorrow which is just bizarre and we got another game the day after that um my life is being dictated by the football calendar which is fine but i don't actually know what day of the week it is at all that's all right um yeah positive vibes that's what we're sticking with today um and i think we've got quite a few to
2:01Ross Halls:bring you which is really good yeah a lot of talking points from the win at the cbs arena which is a great place to go because every time we go there there's memorable moments last year in the FA Cup. We beat them 4-1. And then, yeah, we went and got promoted that night at CPS Arena. This time around, it's a 2-0 win. Yeah, Boxing Day was a bit of a bore fest, wasn't it? A goalless draw against Millwall. But thankfully, Town did bounce back and got a big win, as we've mentioned, against the Sky Blues, who are, of course, league leaders. And we've done the double over them this calendar month. So it's incredible.
2:37Ross Halls:But let's first of all hear from Kieran McKenna on the win and we're going to have a nice little chinwag about all good things Coventry City because we beat the Sky Blues. Kieran McKenna, over to you my friend. Yeah, I think it was a really good performance. I think that was clear first half. Real confidence, real composure, really took the game on, controlled the game, had some really good chances and yeah, loads to enjoy about the performance. Showed real growth in the team and missing some important players as well. So that was a big positive. We knew then at half-time that the whole game wouldn't be like that.
3:16You know, way against a team this strong, with a home record they have, you're not going to have a period of pressure and set players, and you're going to have to stay strong in that. We managed to do that in the second half, and I think we got the goals that clearly the performance deserved. So, yeah, a good performance, good win.
3:33Ross Halls:Yes, a very good performance, and win a team performance, especially after the frustration at Millwall AJ. You predicted a defeat for this one. None of us actually predicted a win. This was the one we were like, oh, we're a bit concerned about. I know we beat him early in the month, 3-0 at Porton Road. But you just never know. They're obviously league leaders for a reason. Can you remember your sort of mindset going into this one? There's four changes, of course. Jacob Green's in for Leif Davis at left back. Jack Clark was starting on the left. Sindro Wale-Agelli was back. Yenske Uste got dropped out for Jack Taylor.
4:11Ross Halls:Who else? There's one more change. That was all the changes. But yeah, what was your mindset? I just predicted a defeat for this one, but it was always going to be a tricky one. Yeah, I mean, I didn't expect what we saw in the end. I think that... And I don't want this to come out saying otherwise. Let me make this clear. I did not think that it's actually going to have the performance and the result that we had. Part of it, there are some parallels drawn with the Blackburn game going into Coventry earlier in the month, where Town obviously were absolutely honking against Blackburn, let's be honest, in that game.
4:51Even though they got the point, it's probably the worst I've seen them play, and I've seen some poor performances from Ipswich this season. And the vibes of that, of the back of Oxford, going into that commentary game were terrible. And I predicted a defeat and they won that game 3-0. Now, again, I'm not trying to say that I expected otherwise, but part of me thought, you know, similar vibes, gone to Millwall, bit rubbish. Logic would say that they're not going to win this game. And if I back them to lose, you know, maybe we might have a second time lucky. It was always kind of in the back of my head, even though, as I said, I never really predicted it to happen.
5:32I didn't expect this. And probably when the teams get announced, there's maybe an even bigger feeling of not expecting it because Leith Davis is an instrumental part of Towne's attacking play, in particular, looking at his creativity. I've banged on relentlessly about sometimes creative, a lack of creativity within this squad, and Davis shoulders so much of that in the left-back role. So having him drop out always felt like it was going to be a big blow. Not having George Hurst, given that he scored in the previous game against commentary and played a big part in that one, felt like a big blow.
6:14Jadon Filagene was benched. I'm not sure. I kind of had him down as someone who I'd drop out regardless, but he, I think, took a heavy hit at the den and could only manage a few minutes towards the end of this match. So all in all, it's a little bit of a patched-up town team, but this is where your squad depth has to come in. And you can bring in Jack Clark, who we'll touch upon, Cinder Valarielli, the most expensive signing in championship history, Jack Taylor, who's been excellent, as you mentioned, and Jacob Greaves, again, who was a bit of a concern for me. I thought that he'd be solid enough defending against commentary, but my worry was going to be how are they going to handle it from an attacking point of view.
6:56And actually, as again, we'll come and touch on in a few minutes, it worked really well having him in for this game. He was pretty much the perfect option to have down that left side in a way when they played to his strengths. So they made the best of a tricky situation. And all in all, despite everything that happened in the game, did I see it happening beforehand when the teams were announced? Nope. No chance. No chance.
7:22Ross Halls:Yeah, I know a few people are actually just pointing with our negativity with draws and defeats in our prediction league. But I don't know. You just go after one game, you go, oh, it's a bit frustrating. And yeah, obviously, contrary, they want the revenge after the game at Portman Road. But they haven't lost on home soil as well. I mean, they've been totally impenetrable on home soil in all competitions this season. But no, probably Town's best performance of the season, my friend. and it started from the first half, really. The early momentum should have been 1-0 up in that first half as well.
7:56Ross Halls:What did you like from that first half display? Because, yeah, commentary were on the ropes. And, yeah, Town, in the past, they've been punished because of that if they haven't scored and teams come back in the game. But Town showed that early momentum very early on. Ipswich, a lot of times that I've seen them away from home play games like they're in the last seconds of a Champions League final. Everything's so frantic, frenetic, disjointed. It feels like they're trying to get things done too quickly. The urgency's there, but it's too much urgency almost. And in the Championship, you can't have that.
8:36And McKenna and the players have previously spoken about how sometimes when they're not winning after X amount of minutes, They grow frustrated, and I think that's where this starts to creep in. So what I like most about this first half was the control. That's the biggest thing for me. 68 % possession in the game. They found themselves camped in Coventry's half. Whenever they lost the ball after a chance, they were so quick to get it back. Defensively, we're excellent, and that's going to be the main standout. Yeah, they had some opportunities, which I can touch upon, but you look at how they limited the strongest team, the strongest attacking team, a team that has scored 54 goals going into this game in 24 games.
9:18That's crazy, by the way. And they had one shot commentary in that first half, which was a very easy save from Ephron Mason Clark's attempt from a long throw. Other than that, they did not have a sniff. Kipre, O'Shea, total shutdown. Midfield protected them really, really well. But the way they kept the pressure on was exceptional. And they forged some chances. They had, I think it was three shots on target, no, four shots on target in that first half. There's a couple that really stand out. One was Jack Clark, who kind of curled one just wide. I think it was a really difficult angle for us to see, but he kind of curled it wide from the edge of the area after a neat little passage of play.
9:59And the big one, Jack Taylor, picking up Clark's cutback, rattling the crossbar. for my money save of the season from Kyle Rushworth to push that one away. Unbelievable stop. It didn't even dawn on me until quite far after. He actually managed to get a touch on it to tip it onto the bar. He does. It's a brilliant save. And then to get down over the ball as well. Town probably didn't do enough to kind of force home their dominance, but it's undoubtedly the most dominant away path that I've seen from Ipswich. the way that they just kind of had this advice-like grip over commentary, didn't let them out.
10:36It felt like they were in a division above them in that first half. There was a real class difference there. And that's what I'm expected to see from Ipswich all season. So even though they didn't get the goal, huge positives to take from what we saw in that first 45 minutes, yeah, going into halftime.
10:55Ross Halls:Even Azor Matassiou had a shot, didn't he? He sort of had so much space to go for it. I remember him just lining up. I think I've got a picture of him taking the shot. And I'm like, that'd been a great moment for him to score his first Town goal. But yeah, very disappointed in Coventry. The two games we played against them. Yeah, we've dominated them. And yeah, Town do like playing against these sort of teams. We like to play. Really, that's what we want. Let's just play all the good teams like that. Because yeah, we played teams like Oxford, who we got up next. It's like, oh no, back to square one.
11:24Ross Halls:Just like Millwall as well. But yeah, very good first half. just that, oh, I really wanted to be 1-0 up because you just never know. And commentary, to be fair to him, AJ, they came out a little bit on top in that sort of opening 10 minutes. And you think, oh God, here we go. But thankfully not. I was expecting your trademark question, Ross. I'm really disappointed. Where was the hat at half-climb? I'll tell you, I was really positive, but also concerned, as you mentioned, because I was fearful that they couldn't have been that bad again in the second half. They weren't. and you knew that Frank Lampard had to strap a rocket to their backsides and get them up and running because they were so flat, so lethargic.
12:07And they did start the second half better. I thought Towne actually in those first maybe five, ten minutes looked quite good, and then Coventry found their feet a little bit. Towne's game management I thought was really good in this game. Now, when you look at the second half, stats then swing again. Coventry dominate possession. They had nine shots to it, which is five, two on target. It never really felt like they had opportunities to knock the door down, did it? The one moment I could think of where they came quite close is Hadji Wright kind of breaks into the box, has a shot, takes a bit of a deflection, and that's the one that forces Walton to push it away from danger.
12:48But other than that, I mean, Walton made three saves. I couldn't actually tell you off the top of my head what the other two are. So the way that the town managed to handle that period was really good. They frustrated the home crowd. Again, it was almost like they swung things a little bit, where when they were on top, they imposed themselves. When commentary was starting to turn the screw, that was where they frustrated them. That's where Darnell Furlong came into his own, and really annoyed the home fans and the home players. There is an element of dark arts usage within that, but it's what helps you win a game.
13:21And it's what kept Town in that game up until the 70th minute, roughly, when they started again to find a little bit more space. It felt that Coventry retiring. And then 72 is when you have the first blow.
13:36Ross Halls:Yes, and it's the man, Jack Clark, who, star boy, him and Jen and Filagina fighting for that golden boot at Redridge Town. Eight goals now between them. And obviously, a Marcelino Nunes assist, and he obviously assists the other goal. But yeah, Jack Clark, you and Stu had a nice little chat on your video verdict. Check that out if you haven't already. Subscribe for only content there. But yeah, sort of good goal from him. And I've seen your stat. I can't think of the top of my head. I'll let you talk about it. But since the 2022-23 season, he's obviously scored. Got loads of assists. His goal contributions have been incredible.
14:12Yeah, thanks for putting me on the spot there, trying to find that stat now to see if I can. Here we go, I've got it. Jack Clark since 2022 you've got to factor in that he's spent a season out of the championship as well 33 goals and 18 assists, nobody has had more goal contributions in that time than Jack Clark who wasn't in the division last season, which is nuts he had a really good game, it was almost quite weird in a way that he drifted very centrally, like so much of this game he was playing almost in a number 10 role, but when you give him the space and maybe it kind of his partnership and i think maybe worked better with jacob greaves there um jacob greaves wanting to uh either stay back or when he pushed high would go high and wide um that opened up the space for for jack clark to come in a little bit more narrow or then alternatively stretch the pitch when when greaves was further down um the footwork was excellent his dribbling was so good um he took this one really well uh even though you know there's a deflection in it let's be honest but the way that he's able to to pick up that ball carry it into the box um his eyes light up as soon as he has the opportunity if it doesn't take the deflection it's probably nestling into the back of the net anyway it does it deflects up off luke wolfenden x blue and loops over the head of rushworth one of those where as i said in the verdict it hangs in the air like you can almost like freeze frame it as to when that ball is just over the head of rushworth before it drops down and into the back of the net um so yeah a fortuitous nature to it but clark with an excellent display he's had three shots in the game he's had the most dribbles of any players on the pitch um there's such a selection headache on the left isn't there I've got to say that.
16:08Yeah, he's doing really well.
16:10Ross Halls:Yeah, right. And I'm putting you on the spot here as well. Not really, but it's more of a question of who do you reckon will be Town's top goal scorer out of Jen and Philogene or Jack Clark? Because Jack Clark, he doesn't need a start because when he comes off the bench, he scores. But when he does start, he does score as well. And Philogene just scores at Porton Road. He needs to score away from home. But who do you reckon will be? Or do you think they'll just go head to head until the end of the season? Depends if Jack Clark gets sold to Sheffield United, doesn't it? I should caveat that by saying that Jack Clark is not being sold to Sheffield United, despite some, I think, slightly wider than RARC reports.
16:45Yeah, who do I think will nail down that spot? I think it will be some rotation elements to it. I think Villa Jean will have the most minutes. Ultimately, one scores goals at home and one scores goals away, and that seems to be a formula that works quite well. I'm interested to see the route that McKenna goes down for Oxford. Does he want to stick with that theory by bringing Jadon Philogene back in? Is Jadon Philogene going to be fit enough to start? We'll have to wait and see. But also factoring in that Pompey's on the horizon with a short turnaround. Yeah, we'll be really interested to see.
17:18I think Philogene will win the golden boot race of the two. But the way that Jack Clark can keep putting in, A, the performance levels off the bench, but also the goal return off the bench with the minutes that he's had. I'm just going to get up these stats. I have them to hand. He's played 24 games. He started just 10, just over 1 ,000 minutes, eight goals and one assist. Yeah, super sub, but he's more than that as well. I know he's kind of almost labelled himself a super sub, and I know he doesn't mind that label, but there's more to Jack Clark, and I'm sure he appreciates that. I'm sure Kieran McKenna appreciates that as well, because he is one of the best players in this division, undoubtedly.
18:01Ross Halls:Very much so. and yeah, the finishers, not super subs now, it's the finishers, you know, they come on to finish the game. But yeah, when he starts, he also does well as well. And he can score at Porton or Ojak Clark because he has this season as well as he's ready. But yeah, having a really good season, especially last year, it was a frustrating campaign in the Premier League for him. But he's now proven he is one of the best players in the Championship and he just needs that. Maybe next time, you know, if we do get, you know, I won't go too early. If Towner are back in the Premier League, I think hopefully he can flourish a bit more because he's had another season in the championship.
18:34Ross Halls:But yeah, very good to see Jack Clark making it 1-0. And then from there, I wasn't worried at all. I was like, Conway's not going to equalise. They've been rubbish pretty much all game. And Wesley James Burns comes off the bench, my friend. And we've got some great audio. You spoke to him after the game. I got him talking about the game as a whole and his goal. But then we also got some good words from him on his ACL journey. because that is one of the toughest injuries you can get in football. And yeah, 11 months since he obviously suffered that injury at Anfield. But do you want to talk about anything before the goal?
19:14Ross Halls:Were you worried at all? Just like me, I was like, no, Town, I've got a crew to this win. I wasn't worried. I was always wary because, again, you look at what Coventry have at their disposal. They're really good players. I thought Ephraim Mason-Clark's been a really good player. sakamoto you know what had your rights capable of um i i was confident for sure but i think there was definitely a wary element to it in those latter stages and and commentary have notched some some late goals themselves this season i think the bit that spoke volumes for me was the subs where um commentary went first they brought on jamie allen and josh eckles that's chasing a game bringing on kind of a number eight and a naturally deep-lying midfielder, whereas Tao, who were trying to see it out, were bringing on Wes Burns, a promotion winner at this level, and Chuba Akpom, a former Golden Boot winner at this level.
20:08Fun fact, Chuba Akpom has played for the entire top four in the championship at the moment, which I think is quite funny. Yeah, and then Tao, sorry, Coventry made the sub to bring on Sims for right. Sims had nothing to work off for his 10 or so minutes on the pit, and then we have the goal. This is really good, the way that Jack Clark again carries the ball down the left. He tries to take on Grimes, sends him for a hot dog, which is great. Grimes goes absolutely blind, cuts it back to Nunez. Nunez spots the run of Burns to his right, and it's a trademark. Wes Burns finished the low shot into the back of the net.
20:49First time we've spoken about Wes on this pod this season because he made a comeback in the 0-0 draw at Millwall. And then literally within, let me get the maths right on this, five minutes after coming onto the pitch, Wes Burns tucks away his first goal since Huddersfield, since the promotion game, which is crazy. The fact it was in front of that away end was really special. Burns' last trip here, he got an assist, which put Towne on the brink of promotion. You could see what he means to it. some of the photos you've got and others have got where you can see the pure emotion in his face the celebrations um it's about winning an important game but um there's so much more to it on the personal level for wes because um so many of the promotion heroes have gone town fans still yet to fall in love with this new crop of players and if there's one player within this squad that ipswich town fans love unanimously you don't dislike wes burns it It's his Wes Burns that you love.
21:54And the outpouring of emotions and love for him has been brilliant.
21:59Ross Halls:Yeah, we're going to spend a good amount of time talking about Wes Burns because he got to. We're going to hear from him, first of all, and then we're just going to chat about him as a whole. And of course, as I mentioned earlier, we've got a really nice little, it's actually a long clip of him talking about his journey with the ACL. He sort of name checks and things. He also says a really nice quote as well. But first of all, we're going to hear from him about the goal and the win because it was big. It's an incredibly special moment for me, not only for me, but for my family and my partner and little boy at home, as well as, you know, such a big goal for the team as well to get us over the line tonight.
22:35It's been such a long, long road and process for me to get back to this point. You know, the highs and lows of football, as they say. So, yeah, incredible night for me. To score in front of the town fans as well, with all your mates piling on your back as well. No, it's a surreal feeling. I can't really describe it or explain it in words. If I could bottle it up and sell it, I'd be a billionaire. But, yeah, an incredible feeling. That's a calm finish as well. Did you know it was in straight away? To be fair, as it's coming across, I just think if I get a good strong contact and put it back from the way it's come, there's half a chance it goes in.
23:10I got lucky it's gone through. I think it goes through Wolfie's legs. And, yeah, the keeper doesn't see it, so, yeah, it nestles in the bottom corner. How big a win was this for you, boys? No, it's huge. I think we were a little bit disappointed coming away from Millwall, thinking we probably should have taken three points from the game. I know we weren't at our best in the game. Football in this league, the turnaround's so, so fast that we didn't have time to dwell on it. The heads were firmly focused on this one and ready to go. I thought the lads to a man were excellent tonight. But again, like I said, the game's come freaking fast.
23:46We've got Oxford again in three days, so we need to focus on that one now.
23:50Ross Halls:we're not going to focus on that just yet because we want to talk about you and it was just great to hear his song being charted in the way and as well you know love tear us apart well Burns tear us apart again it was just brought back flashbacks of that incredible championship season league one days as well but yeah AJ it took him 336 days to get back on the pitch as a first team player then three days later he goes and scores his first town goal since his injury. And he goes and does a knee slide as well. You've just done your knee, Wes. Brave. Very brave. But he must have just been confident enough to get it.
24:27Ross Halls:But yeah, it's just a great story. Especially he's got such a big connection with the town fan base because of what he was part of as well. And as you mentioned earlier, he's seen a lot of his teammates leave who were part of those promotion heroes, like Morsi, Wolferton, of course, Burgess, Chaplin who's still at the club but he's on loan at Portsmouth loads of different players but yeah and he's got connection with Coventry because he scored that Trevella goal didn't he he's had moments against Coventry as you mentioned the assist as well but yeah it gives maybe Kieran McKenna another headache on the right because he's obviously got the young Sindre Casey McAteer bless him yeah sorry but Wes it's just great.

25:17Ross Halls:I'm lost on words because I'm just so happy for him because of just the journey because that's such a tough injury to get back from. It is. I mean, let's touch on that right-sided bit as well. Obviously, Sindra Barlow-Rigeli is there and Casey McIntyre didn't get on the pitch in that game. But Wes is different, isn't he, in terms of the pace and the direct running and probably the physicality as well. His know-how and knowledge of this league really important um so factoring all those things in uh it's great to have him as an option again the question mark is going to be what what is he going to be able to to offer this season and at the moment we probably don't know uh when you look at his cameo at the den he touched the ball once when you look at his cameo at commentary he touched the ball i said on the post match it It was four times.
26:10I had a look again. It's been updated. It's three touches against commentary. So he's only had four touches. So we need to see what level he's at physically in terms of his pace because that's such a big part of his game in terms of his strength and that direct running power. He's clearly still got the eye for a finish because he took this one really, really well. That's always going to be a concern that those kind of other athletic elements when you've had an ACL injury, not just because of what it does to your knee, but also because you've not done so much on pitch work in, what, 11 months it's been since he last kicked the ball.
26:50So factoring all that in, it can set you back a long way. But I spoke to him about that last night and said, look, an ACL injury is bad enough for any player, let alone one who's so pace-focused. How is this going to be for you? and he said, to be honest, I think I'm in a better place now than I was before the injury. So if we can have that kind of side of a Wes Burns, then he's going to get some good opportunities. We'll wait and see when those opportunities come, but let's not look too far ahead as well. This is about him and the narrative from this game, wrapping up a huge win, wrapping up Ipswich's best performance of the season, taking his goal incredibly well, getting mobbed by all of his teammates and the fans going absolutely nuts in that away end.
27:37I'm delighted for Wes Burns, the player, but delighted for Wes Burns, the person as well, because he's gone through hell. He's had to shut out from football. He's had to watch his club get relegated, unable to help. He's had to watch his club struggle, let's be honest, in the first half of the season, unable to help. With new signings coming in and playing ahead of him, he'll be itching to get back out there. He's now back out there. And to have this moment, have this goal, to remind people he's still there, can still play a part and still has a part in a lot of fans' hearts as well. It's the perfect story.
28:14And it's hopefully the perfect ending to this kind of chapter of injury hell for him. Yeah, just delighted for him.
28:22Ross Halls:Yeah, and he also knows how to do a fist pump because Marcia Nunes, please watch Wes Burns' fist pump because that was proper passion. Nunez's got passion but they're not great those fist pumps Nunez does unfortunately but yeah Wes Burns just showed pure passion and we're going to hear now from him so enjoy this long clip of Wes Burns talking about his ACL journey and yeah you're just hearing his voice you know obviously it was such a hard year but he's so happy to be back on the pitch let's hear from Wes How hard has it been for you since Anfield? Yeah it has been I did an interview view quite shortly after and for a long time I kind of just switched off from football really I didn't really want any part of it because you know when you know you're going to be out for for at least nine ten eleven months it's hard to really stay in it and you know stay focused for that long so I gave myself a little bit of time to sort of switch off and I'm not really thinking about football for a while but after my surgery was was done and you know the first you You know, a month was out of the way and I could do a little bit more, I could walk properly again.
29:31That's when I knew I needed to tune back in. And it's been such a mad rollercoaster of emotions throughout it all. And obviously it's such a hard injury to come back from. So, yeah, I'm incredibly proud of myself and my family for coming through such a hard time. And at the club, who are some of the people that played a big pass in it and looked after you? Yeah, I mean, there's so many to name. My teammates have been second to none throughout the whole time. Big shout out to Dan Morton, who's been with me since day one. Me and him have had some tough times in the gym when things haven't been at their best.
30:12He's stuck by me for everything. Obviously, the rehab team has been excellent from the moment I got injured. I can't thank them enough. For them to get me back to where I am now and to be able to produce a moment like that tonight, is you know i can't thank them enough some of your former teammates kept in touch and maybe lads you know from other teams not just ipswich maybe the welsh scene as well no i mean everyone's you know the world of football although it's massive is very small as well um and everyone always seems to stay in touch especially when you achieve such amazing things that we have done and at this club you know all the all the lads that have moved on we still talk near enough every day if not every week um so yeah you know the support even from people that's been um that have been and gone has been great as well.
30:56Kieran as well, I'd imagine kept in touch, obviously, at Playford Road and stuff. Yeah, yeah, I mean, the boss has got to do what the boss has got to do, and when I'm not really available to him, it's hard for him to maybe find the time to come and talk to me and things like that, but honestly, he's been brilliant. Whenever we've had a chance to sit down and have a coffee and catch up and stuff, he's always said that his office door is open and obviously the football season is carnage, so you can imagine there's not much time for that, but he's always made time for me so yeah brilliant. Was the target always Christmas, tail end of 2025?
31:29Did you have that target in mind? To be fair I thought I might have been a bit earlier, I wanted to be a bit earlier but with injuries like I've had they're never straightforward. Everyone always targets that I want to come back before nine months, I want to be the first person to come back in six, seven months but you can't take shortcuts with the injury because it will come back and bite you on the bum. I did have a couple of setbacks in my rehab as you'd imagine but as I got closer to the end I wanted to play this side of the year I got injured in January and to play in the same calendar year was always a target so yeah I managed that
32:13Ross Halls:Indeed he did and I have to admit I'm still humming the words of Burns will tear you apart again just incredible story and hopefully he can continue that as well AJ as we mentioned but no that was it 2-0 way end was bouncing even when I was doing the interviews at game day people were obviously honking horns the buses as well and everyone just hugging and just enjoying the moment again at Coventry as we mentioned before we enjoyed that night in April in 2023 was it 2024? 2024 but that was a bit more warmer that evening because it wasn't a bit chilly last night. But yeah, big win. And I've just found this stat is actually from Stu's verdict.
33:01Ross Halls:There's only four teams who have won at Coventry in 2025. Leeds, United, Burnley and Sunderland who of course all went on to get promoted. And uptown have now beaten Coventry twice this calendar year. So not too shabby at all. But yeah, big moment, my friend. How would you want to wrap up the win against Coventry. We're going to talk about standout players, but would you say it's the best display of the season? You asked this to stew on the verdict. We mentioned the 3-0 win against Coventry at Portland Road was the best display. This one probably tops it because of the whole 90 minutes. Yeah, it clearly tops it because of the whole 90 minutes because of the fact it was at Coventry, a place where they've been invincible, of course.
33:48The worst results they've had have been draws. because of the fact that this was a Coventry team that had more players available. They missed some key players in that last game, like Sakamoto and like Hadji Wright, who wasn't able to start at Portman Road. They were both started in this one and didn't have a sniff because of the way they managed the game, because of the way they attacked it, because of the way they controlled it, because of the way the centre-backs handled it. So many elements that we've been disappointed by with this Ipswich team in recent weeks. that they managed to... When Ipswich play badly, let's say it this way, when Ipswich play badly, it's usually that you can see one or two elements of their game that's not quite there.
34:33It's not usually like it's a total disaster. You don't see them outclassed in the championship. You don't see a team that is failing on multiple fronts. It usually might be individual errors or the creativity is lacking or the intensity is lacking or something like that. That's what lets them down. And this is one of those performances where there was none of that. Every single element of the game pretty much was spot on. Individually, it was just on all their battles as a tactical battle. Kieran McKenna, I think, showed he is tactically levels way above Frank Lampard. And all in all, you've just got to be really happy with what we've seen, in terms of bouncing back from what has been a hit and miss December.
35:25It's not going to mean a lot unless they can put a run together and kick on. That's going to have to be the next big test.
35:32Ross Halls:Yes, indeed. And we're going to do, of course, the Oxford preview, the first game of 2026. And my big word is back it up, Kieran McKenna and co. That's a phrase. Yeah, it is a phrase. and the thing is we've been here before though haven't we we're having a great we'll enjoy this pod because we've got positivity and stuff like that, different moments and all that jazz we're going to talk about standout plays right now but then we've gone it's been a damp squid next game whatever whatever people know me already now that I can't speak but they've just got to back it up But let's talk about some players, my friend, because I'm sure you enjoy doing the player ratings because there were numerous standouts.
36:19Ross Halls:I'm just looking at your player ratings now, my friend. A lot of eights. A lot of eights. Which is great to see. You gave your man in the match to Marcelino Nunes, which he's gone a bit under the radar with the amount of assists he's got. He got two assists in this game. He's obviously playing in the 10 at the moment, which is very good. let's speak about Marcelino Nunes because he has been incredible recently he has I feel that sometimes he's getting assists where he's quite quiet in games but ultimately he's popping up in these key moments he deserves the praise, he's got two assists in this one, it's eight for the season seven in the Nipstit shirt it feels like it's always him and when he's at it, which he wasn't throughout this game but when he's really in his stride the way that he can drag opponents out of position and open up space and and create chances is in my mind unlike any other player in the division is he the long-term answer in the number 10 i'm not sure i'm i'm yeah i'm not too sure but um he's undoubtedly the best option that ipswich have at the moment and um with the performances that he's putting in, it's difficult to look past what he's able to bring.
37:35So, yeah, really good to see him churning out so consistently and he's having to shoulder a lot of the creative burden in a team that, as I've said, maybe is lacking it in parts. So impressed by him. Close contenders for it, probably three or four others, which is pretty crazy. Jack Clark, not a great deal more to say about him. Top performance, really impressive. not just the goal but his overall involvement felt like he was doing a bit of everything himself in attack at times and making it work as well it wasn't like he was just running into walls all the time um as well matter see what i think touched every single blade of grass on the pitch the the distance he covered was crazy um the effortlessness in his um in his play unbelievable um for me in terms of pure quality he's undoubtedly the best defensive midfielder in the division and a premier quality player.
38:31So excited to see what more we've got to come from him. Darnell Furlong, we'll call him a wind-up merchant, I think, in this game. I think that he's probably public enemy number one in commentary with going down maybe a little bit soft at times. But ultimately, as I said before, and this is a lesson that Ipswich had to learn in the Premier League, you've got to have some of the dark arts if you're going to be able to be a successful team at this level. and when Coventry were turning the screw, Furlong was the one who was just turning it back the other way by slowing things down, frustrating the fans, frustrating Coventry players, and also just the way he shut out Ephraim Mason-Clark apart from one moment where I think he got beaten every other time against one of the best wingers in the division, made it look really effortless.
39:21And I'll give a mention as well to Cedric Kipre, who I described as Virgil van Kipre on Twitter. I was really disappointed about how that went under the radar, but still, yeah, delighted for him, of course, because he's a great person, a great guy, and a really top player. It's all of the defensive stuff. It's how dominant he is at the air. It's how effortlessly he wins headers, but also the way that he plays out from the back. He played a big part that went under the radar again. In that second goal, the way that he steps out from the back line so composed on the ball, weirdly just like running from deep and taking shots when he feels like it.
40:03Yeah, top player. Top player.
40:06Ross Halls:And just as a whole, a team performance. A lot of people have been saying, and we've probably mentioned it as well, a team of individuals. It's just we had to wait for one of these star players to score an important goal to win the game. But this was a really good team performance. And I'm sure Kieran McKenna is very happy and we've sort of been waiting for that moment, haven't we? This team, you know, to really hit strides and get the win. And hopefully they can back this up, as we mentioned, my friend. And we now close the gap on the top two. It's now two points, which is mad. Also, Hull City there as well, because they obviously got a win.
40:40Ross Halls:So it's two teams. It's a free horse race now, potentially, for that. And now the gap is getting smaller to commentary, but still a bit of a way. but yeah I'm sure you're feeling pretty rosy now you know to end the year this second year in a row we've been able to end a year with a win we beat Chelsea to end in 2024 this time around and in 2025 with a bang with a 2-0 win and the table looking not too shabby yeah I mean you can't obviously focus too much on kind of I remember towards the back end of that 2023-24 season where it was like total focus on what Leeds do, total focus on what Leicester do, total focus on Southampton.
41:22Cutting the gap to two points at this stage is great and following on what Borough do, but when there's half a season still to play, that's a hell of a loss of points. So, yeah, it's good. And I think more than anything, it's a psychological boost to players and the manager will say, not looking at the table, not focused on the table. It's at least somewhat a lie. They know where they are in the table. They know what the gap is. They will know that Middlesbrough lost home to Hull on Monday night. So, yeah, it'll be interesting to see where things go from here because maybe some teams that we've seen that we thought would be a bit more resurgent are yet to show it.
41:58Southampton, Birmingham, Sheffield United, Leicester, of course. Others now are starting to peel away, but going into the new transfer window, going into the second half of the season, you'd like to think that Town have the depth and have the quality to make it count. and when the margins are so slim. I don't think that will change hugely between now and the end of the season. Those are the things that will make the difference, or could at least, I should say, make the difference ahead of a team like Borough, ahead of a team like Hull, ahead of a Preston or a Millwall or a team like that. Yeah, fascinating few weeks ahead, and definitely this next month in particular feels like it could be particularly important.
42:42Ross Halls:Yeah, just have a little look now. The next three league opponents for town are currently ranked ninth or lower. But then normally when we play these teams, this is where we struggle. The balance is actually quite interesting. When you come back from a game, right? I don't know if you have the same thing, Ross, but quite often you come back from a late game and it's like, right, it's late, let's go to sleep. But because you've just been at a football game, your mind's slightly wired a little bit. so like I was up about half past one having a look at town season as a whole and kind of the opponents that they have to play and obviously Portman Road's the place to be that's where you want to pick up most of your points that's where it's a charles it's going to be honest going to pick up most of their points they've been beaten once at home all season in what I hope is a freak game against Charleston Athletic and when you look at the table in the top half of it they've played most of the teams away from home now the only ones in the top half they've still got to play Watford who are sixth Stoke, who are 10th, and Wrexham, who are 11th.
43:44So they've already ticked off a trip to Coventry. Borough, Birmingham, Leicester, Hull, Millwall, Bristol City, QPR. There's a lot of quite difficult trips that they've ticked off, and those teams are going to have to now come to Portman Road in the second half of the season. If you look at the home form, for example, the home league table, which is ranked second for that in the entire division, when you look at the top half of that home table, they've got four teams who they've got to go to. Watford, who have the third best home record, Wrexham, West Brom and Stoke. So it's going to be a lot of games now, important games at Portman Road against big teams.
44:19The away trips become, on paper, a little bit easier. Easy to say when it's a team that lost to Oxford. But when you look at that, it's got to be a cause for confidence going into the second half of the campaign, knowing that there's a lot of tough trips ticked off and that these top teams, the teams around you in the league, you've already been to their stadium. They've got to come to you. And Town at Portman Road have been and will hopefully continue to improve to be a different beast.
44:51Ross Halls:And yeah, hopefully Town fans will be bouncing going into this one. New Year's Day, the kick-off of the year. But yeah, can Town finally build on this momentum, my friend? I just feel this one feels a bit different because yeah, it's winning at commentary, the league leaders. And I'm hoping this will be the springboard moment where town can go, boom, here we are. But hopefully we don't go crashing down against Oxford, which we'll look into now, my friend. They've got no manager at the moment. They've got caretaker in charge because your old friend Gary got sacked two days before Christmas. So that is just horrible.
45:27Ross Halls:It's a common thing. Managers get sacked. But that should be like a written rule. You can't sack a manager before Christmas or even after Christmas. like, you know, this period is like, no, no. But yeah, of course they're struggling. But, you know, they beat us, didn't they, last month at a Kassam, which was a frustrating night. I remember we recorded a pod, didn't we, in our hotel room in the Premier Inn. And we had to discuss that game. A lot's happened since then. And yeah, they've obviously got rid of Gary. They've got Craig Short as their caretaker. they won on Boxing Day, didn't they? But then obviously they lost yesterday against Swansea 1-0, but beat Southampton 2-1.
46:15Ross Halls:They lost against Cholton. They lost against Preston, Blackburn, Swansea. So, yeah, they're not in a good spot, are they? But they're a team that town have come up against before and they've struggled against. How are you feeling for this one, my friend? Confident, to be honest. I think that a home game and an away game against Oxford are two different kind of things. You look at Oxford who beat Southampton at home on Boxing Day, that was probably their new manager bounce, to be perfectly honest. I think they've been sent crashing back down to earth after that. When you look at their away form, they've won twice on the road this season.
46:52It's one of the worst away records in the division. One of those wins came at Sheffield Wednesday. The other was at Bristol City back in September. the squad feels like it's lacking depth in a lot of key areas there's there's good talented players there's good exciting young players i like tyler goodrum i like stan mills uh posheta who's been linked with a move away obviously scored against town in the reverse fixture off the bench uh luke harris on them from oxford they've had prelec starting up front um over harris who scored in that that reverse game as well it feels very league one the team to me to be perfectly honest and you know famous last words and i think regardless what happens on new year's day i can't see oxford staying in the division unfortunately um an early call there but this is how i see it and this is again where um you can not excuse as much but you can look at an away game and say look friday night under the lights um it's oxford maybe isn't an easy place to go even though there's a gap in quality between the squads at portman road this is where your multi-million pound squad has to be toxic united 100 um and they need to bring the the good vibes back because uh obviously that i think that town didn't really convince in that sheffield wednesday game uh that was off the back of leicester then the millwall game coventry away lifts the mood hugely lifts the mood but it needs to be backed up now and Town needs to put in not just a convincing result but the performance has to be much better than say what we saw against Sheffield Wednesday in the last home match yeah so must win
48:37Ross Halls:is that you're putting this in that category wow
48:44yeah why not must win yeah not necessarily look I mean no games are must win unless it genuinely is decisive. But I said after the last Coventry game, if you can't build on this and have a run from this, then there's something wrong. This is now a bigger thing because they've gone on the road, beaten Coventry, best display of the season. I know it's a sharp turnaround, but it is for Oxford as well. And you've got to be better than them. you've got to get a result against them. I don't mean to disrespect Oxford, but there's clear levels here between where Ipswich are and where Oxford are, what the ambitions are between the players that are going to be on that pitch.
49:31You've got players like Sindrabal or Aghelli, who by himself is probably worth more than Oxford's entire squad. So looking at that, yeah, it's going to be important to put all the pieces together and have a convincing home performance and home result.
49:46Ross Halls:Yes, indeed. And we've got a nice little knee-jerk Kirk Odia Poll here from good old Mark Hefe. Hefe. When different moments happen in the game, he jumps on X and does a poll and the Coway Army have voted. And it is, should Jacob Greaves start the next game at left back even if Leif Davis is fit again or feeling better because he obviously missed the game because he was ill? What do you reckon, AJ? So far, yes, it's 59%. No, it's 41%. Jacob Greaves had a good game he's played left back before many times when he's at Hull City with that town had a very good game what's your what's your feeling on this no not against Oxford yeah move on the simple point of it is that Jacob Greaves at left back is it an option 100 % I think he's the best cover at left back at the moment while town without a natural left back potentially it could even be that you town don't even need to get a left back in January if they think that way, if Jacob Greaves can cover in the way that he has.
50:57He was the perfect foil and the perfect outlet in this game against Coventry. And it's remarkable that I didn't even bring him up when talking about star players. That's bonkers how I didn't think of it. People were probably screaming at their podcast players. Why have you not mentioned Jacob Greaves? They'll mention him now. Excellent in this game. Sakamoto, nowhere near him and also what I liked about him the most is the fact that he played as high up as Azon for most of the game but to ease the pressure so much when Town play these long balls half the time it's just kind of cleared up the line and the opposition are able to counter but when you have Greaves in that position instead of Davis, he's winning the flick-ons he's creating space for Nunez to run into and for Azon to run into and for Clark to run into and that was the perfect outlet in a game where Town, although they were dominant, also did face a lot of pressure against the top team.
51:52You're not going to have that against Oxford. It's going to be different. You need to use the initiative. You need to have a player who's going to be more comfortable high up the pitch, who's going to want to create and want to score. It's not going to be about the defensive side as much. This has to be a Leif-Davis game if he's fit. If not, I'd backgreaves to do the job. but if Leif Davis is healthy again and ready to go you'd want him in this game especially at Portman Road so Leif Davis to start for me
52:23Ross Halls:Okay then and we're going to of course record a boot room if you want to hear more in-depth preview on the Oxford game at Portman Road on New Year's Day but yeah the end of 2025 is nigh AJ and I always like to sort of ask this question to people how would you sum up the year as a whole for It's been a bit of a rollercoaster year for six months it was not great because we were getting hammered in the Premier League a lot then the championships had ups and downs but of course it's been nice to end the year with a bang with the win against Coventry but how do you sum up the year as a whole for Kieran Kenna's side different, difficult a little bit disjointed at times hard more than anything Let's be honest, the second half of the Premier League season was a write-off.
53:14It felt that because of that, it was just a bit of a nothing period for Ipswich in a way, where ever since that Southampton defeat at Portman Road in early February 1st last year, it just felt like it was playing towards the inevitable, which it was. and that had quite significant knock-on effects with so many key players leaving over the summer with bedding so many new players in at the start of this season. So those are kind of the key themes. It's probably been the hardest and probably the most negative calendar year under Kieran McKenna, but that's natural as well because it's been the hardest not just on the pitch but off it in that McKenna's had to navigate the Premier League, the hardest league in the world, with a huge step up from League One off the back of two back-to-back promotions.
54:16Of course, the aforementioned changes, losing key players but key people as well that has been really, really difficult. So this has been kind of the unsettled year of the McKenna era, of the game-changer era. Now we're hoping that this is going to be a more settled period that players start to bed in. We fall in love with these players again. And that it guides Ipswich Town back to the Premier League. And if that happens this year, that the start of next season and the second half of 2026 leads to more positivity in the Premier League if they can achieve that. So, yeah, we'll have to wait and see.
54:57but the reflection is going to be one of transition, one of tough times and one of a slightly disjointed Ipswich town. But hopefully it can be taking a step back to take two steps forward in the long term.
55:14Ross Halls:Love that, my friend. And yeah, for me, if we one up Fulham at the start of 2025, it's going to be all different. You're big on that. You're really big on that Fulham game. Could have been, could have been, but it wasn't. And yeah, but yeah, of course, it's been another great year, though, doing this podcast, bringing you content, ladies and gentlemen, the Coway Army. Hope you've enjoyed listening. Big thank you to all of you for just reading, engaging with all of our stuff, even the contributors as well. Big shout out to the Coway Army, the posse who does stuff for me for game day and fan social and all bits and bobs.
55:50Ross Halls:Thank you to all the former town players who took part in my Coway specials. And I've got many more planned for 2026. And yeah, AJ, happy new year to you, my friend. Another year covering Itchristown with you, Hefe and Stu as well. Any final words as we wrap up the final Kings of Anglia podcast of 2025? Yeah, have a great new year, everyone. It's coming out on the day we record, isn't it? So New Year's Eve tomorrow. Enjoy it, but enjoy it by being disciplined because my God, we've got to go again. New Year's Day, this has to be the start of a run. A big week, don't drink too much because a hangover at the football will be rough.
56:27rough as hell, won't it? You don't want that. So be at your A game, loud and proud for Oxford, then on to Pompey. Thank you, as Ross said, to everyone who's listened, who's watched, who's subscribed, who's followed, who reads, who has said hello at a service station at 2am in the arse end of nowhere, who came to the live show earlier this year and we've got another one planned in 2026. everyone who's had anything to do with um with koa with the eadt thank you guys so much
57:06Ross Halls:onwards and upwards in in 2026 so yes bring it on and uh yeah if you you know people do the hair of the dog don't they so you know you'll celebrate new year's day but then you'll get to the game go to a pub and and drink more but uh yeah enjoy it though ladies gentlemen um merry merry christmas hope you all have a good christmas though uh happy new year and all that jazz and uh we'll see you back at Portman Road, Optus United, come to town. 57:39Ross Halls:Molecular, who came in, I think, halfway through 2025. And yeah, of course, I've struggled to say their name ever since. But great to have them involved. A local company based in Leyston helping you, your car stuff. I'm not going to mention that because I know a lot of people shouting at me, is this going to be finally the year? I'm not even going to bring it up. If anybody else brings it up, that's my New Year's resolution for you. No one brings it up. It's your resolution for this year. It's not. Have you just given up? No, I'm not giving up. I think we need to stop talking about it. And then when it happens, I'll just go, oh yeah, by the way, I can drive now.
58:17Ross Halls:But if we just stop talking about it and then we can move away from it. But Molecular though, if you do have a car, if you can drive, use K810 and get all your nice cleaning products for that. and Stardust Spirits for your New Year's probably maybe a bit too late for now for New Year's if you order it now potentially but use Kauai to get 20 % off your next order for Great Spirits and to bring in the New Year as well but yeah shout out to two great local Suffolk companies sponsoring the podcast but yeah thanks again for listening as standard and bring on 2026 Happy New Year to you all Kauai Army bye bye for now

The boys look back on the game, where Town toppled the Championship leaders at the CBS Arena thanks to goals from Jack Clarke and Wes Burns.
There’s a special mention for Burns, who scored for the first time since returning from his lengthy ACL injury lay-off. We hear from the winger, who spoke at length about the difficulties he’s faced.
Then it’s onto the stand-out performers and the bigger picture, with the Blues sitting just two points behind second-place Middlesbrough.
There’s also some chat around the New Year’s Day clash against Oxford United, with a winning streak the next big step in Town’s bid to secure promotion to the Premier League.
