In short
Ipswich Town’s transfer deadline build-up (“sexy stuff” banter), reviewing January/early-window business, likely outgoings, and striker targets; then a match preview for Preston at Portman Road.
Guests (hosts)
Stewie Watson (Ipswich fan; birthday mentioned; social-media active), AJ (co-host; “naughty boys course” joke; asks about transfer strategy), Marky/Mark (co-host; leads some discussion and predictions).
Key claims
- Dan Neil is viewed as an excellent midfield signing, but the loan structure is questioned (options/contract uncertainty).
- Ipswich likely need one striker before the 7pm deadline; main candidate exit is Sami Smoddicks to Derby.
- Christian Walton contract extension to 2028 is a major positive; he’s been top-tier in the Championship after injury luck.
- Preston are out of form (0 goals in last four; key absences), making them a good chance to return to winning.
Notable examples
- Smoddix: linked to Derby; Ipswich valuation vs Derby offer; speculation of a compromise fee.
- Striker links: Joel Piroe (Leeds), Sam Surridge (Nashville/MLS), plus possible “if available” names like David Datro Fofana and Patrick Azumang.

0:38Mark Heath:hello friends and welcome to your midweek edition of the kings of anglia ifscherstown podcast proudly sponsored by star dust spirits and molecular uk i say midweek but we've been we've been very good to you this week it feels like we've had a pod every day in fact thus far we started with the the flagship show on monday then we had a signing special on tuesday daniel arriving Yesterday, we had Tractor Girls Talk and a fan social. And now we're back, friends, with another flagship show to talk all about the exciting world of sexy stuff ahead of the transfer deadline, the window slamming shut on Monday.
1:13Mark Heath:It's 7 o 'clock. Very thoughtful, very civilised for our deadlines. Hi, Marky. I'm joined, and it's a rare three-man show. It's been two-man shows for much of it. There's a three-man show today. Stewie Watson, you've not been on here for a little while, at least on the flagship pod. How are you?
1:28Stuart Watson:very well thank you yeah how are we gents are we all good i forgot to ask you stew how your birthday was uh my birthday was most pleasant feels a long time ago already a couple of weeks back um thank you for the thank you for the birthday wishes that came flooding in i was um i was perplexed that day is very what was the age that you put out i can't remember now it changed quite a lot um i think i said 48 originally i think it went up during the day i just got random text message and social media post wishing me did you like it as much as i thought do you like
2:02Mark Heath:yeah absolutely loved it yeah bloody loves it watson he's all over social media um your younger friend who does love social media indeed lives his life on social media is sadly a criminal um he's been paying his dues atoning for his sins this week aj you had to do a little naughty boys course didn't you on tuesday how did that all go that was thrilling i enjoyed messaging you not during it it should be said because that wouldn't be allowed but i messaged you during the 10 minute interval to say how thrilling it was to spend my tuesday night um essentially going around and doing some primary school exercises but you know what i learned some things i didn't actually know beforehand so that was quite cool uh so positives i suppose yeah are you now have you now decided you're going to adhere to the laws of this great country his majesty's road laws the road laws yes other ones other laws tbd so you're going to drive very safely to portman road this saturday oh yes absolutely you'll be on the train actually won't you probably i will anyway today is all about sexy stuff obviously there's a game um to build up to as well we'll get to that at the end because i know most of you are just interested in who the bloody hell town gonna sign before seven o 'clock on monday so i thought we'd start by reviewing what's happened so far and then talking about all the links.
3:18Mark Heath:It was a busy day yesterday in terms of transfer links with the boys having their ears pressed close to the ground. So first of all, let's review what's happened so far. I'm going to start with you, Stu, because actually I'm going to start with AJ because he wasn't on the Dan Neal signing bit, was he, on Tuesday. So Anders Mometti, we've spoken about him,£3 million through the door. Good stuff, hopefully. And then Dan Neal comes in on Tuesday, AJ. We spoke a little bit about it on Monday. Now he's through the door, though. your thoughts on this one yep two sides to this one firstly the important one which is how he is as a player which is I don't think there would have been many better midfield targets for Ipswich Town to sign I think that he looks like an excellent player he's won promotion from this level he's got the leadership qualities because even though I don't think he was captain week in week out he was the captain at Wembley for Sunderland going up and did have the armband for large chunks of that season he's young he can cover different roles as we've spoken about I think we spoke about a little bit on Monday where I know he can play more advanced I think he's a natural sitter but he can also I think do some of the Matasiwa role as well he is more of a defensive player when he can do that side I think we'll see quite a few games where he plays alongside Azor Matasiwa I think that will work really well especially in those away games to look a little bit more solid which maybe hasn't happened as much with Jens or I guess with Jack Taylor to an extent.
4:44He's a bit of an all-rounder. Some of his highlight reel stuff, the shots he's had from range look really, really good. Just a solid, solid addition to a championship promotion pushing team. The flip side of it is I cannot for the life of me figure out why it's a loan deal. It just feels a little bit bizarre in that his contract runs out at the end of the season. And I don't know what his situation would be then. Would it be a case that if he does really well and the better offer came along that he could just go and go somewhere else? Is there something there that says Ipswich go up and then he joins permanently?
5:17I don't know. So there's a few question marks kind of around the deal still for me. But as a player, this is a really exciting addition, I think.
5:24Mark Heath:Yeah, I think the boys covered that on Tuesday. Ross and Stu did a kind of live reaction bit and you were talking to Stu about that very thing, suggesting essentially maybe he's backing himself in terms of getting a contract this summer. Perform well at Ipswich.
5:38Stuart Watson:I would imagine it's a case of both sides keeping their options open a little bit. Sunderland have gone up to the Premier League and no room for sentiment, splashed the cash and that's been justified, I guess, with what they've done this season. Ipswich may have similar thoughts in terms of not wanting to tie themselves to too many players that they think are short-term promotion helpers, but not necessarily long-term Premier League consolidators. and Dan Neal too will be keeping his options open. Plenty of clubs were interested in him. He had even linked to clubs in Germany and various other places.
6:17So I would imagine it's a bit of that
6:21Stuart Watson:and the financials will probably come into it as well. He'll be on a Premier League wage at Sunderland, which might not necessarily at this juncture want to cover all of that. Sunderland probably feel that the fair thing to do is for him to be able to pick up that wage given what he's given to them over the last few years. I don't know if there's a clause in there for Ipswich to be kind of front of the queue, but all being well, he comes to Ipswich, does really well. Ipswich get promoted and it's a no-brainer to extend it in the summer, isn't it?
6:51Mark Heath:Yeah, absolutely. Okay, so two in the door, Mometti and Neil. Two out the door, Cameron Humphries and Harry Clark going out on loan. Just brings up the speed as well, Stu, and that leaves us in terms of state of play with the squad. And also, yesterday, there was a link with Finlay Barbrook going out about that won't count towards the squad is that correct that's correct yeah that's
7:09Stuart Watson:it's not really been a factor because finney barbrook wasn't registered for the first half of the season uh even though he would have been underage anyway uh with the efl rules but yeah looks like he's going to go out on loan to colchester in league two which just down the road danny cowley will have watched him play plenty of times for the 21s who are obviously playing at colchester this season went out uh to lincoln didn't in the first half of the season limited game time there they're flying in league one at the moment um the three club rule doesn't apply to him because he's only minutes for lincoln came in the efl trophy which in the eyes of the authorities doesn't count as a major competition or a proper competition so he can go out on loan um that's that one in terms of the where the squad's at the moment uh we've had two out two in haven't we we've had uh cameron humphries and harry clark both go out on loan um and we've had anis memetti and dan neal come in now so um back up to the 25 man senior limit which means that if ipswich want to bring anyone else in they're going to have to make room for them before monday's 7
8:17Mark Heath:pm deadline should we start there then shu because one of the links um that you boys put out yesterday was a potential out they're gonna have to if they're gonna sign a striker which um clearly you You know, that would be the signing left if they were going to make another one. They're going to have to get rid of someone. And one of the links you put out yesterday was Sammy Smoddicks, who has obviously not had the best of seasons, been injured, not really hit any kind of form. And you put out a link yesterday saying that Derby County are interested in taking him to Pride Park.
8:47Stuart Watson:Yeah, I've mentioned it on previous podcasts before. Derby are very interested in him. John Eustace seems to want to rebuild his entire Blackburn side and staff set up at Derby. Already brought quite a few across with him. And Sam Smoddix is someone that he tried to get back last summer. And that got shut down by Ipswich pretty quickly. The situation has obviously changed over the last six months with how Ipswich's squad's been built. The form and the injury setbacks that Smoddix has had. so Derby are back in for him and Ipswich are a little bit more open to doing something there but the price has to be right so at the moment my understanding is their offer falls well short of Ipswich's valuation but I think this will get there between now and 7pm they'll come to an agreed price And yeah, it's just not quite worked out for Sami Schmoddik, since that nine million move from Blackburn after that early goal at Man City, which seems incredible looking back at it.
9:59Stuart Watson:The overhead kick at Tottenham had his moments in the Premier League, but last year, the calendar year of 2025 was a frustrating stop-start one for him, wasn't it? And we hoped that he would be right back at home in the championship where he scored so many goals for Blackburn, back in his favoured number 10 second striker role. For whatever reason, it just hasn't kind of worked for Schmoddix and it looks like Ipswich are going to have to take a bit of a hit on the£9 million that they paid for him and move on.
10:30Mark Heath:Well then, AJ, let's play football manager. What would you accept? What would you be after for Sammy Schmoddix? And if he does leave, your thoughts on that move? Poor, tricky this one, isn't it? because there's a lot of different factors that kind of cancel each other out where the negatives would be his age, his injury record. I mean, I say age like I'm Ross here, but yeah, his age, his injury record, his form. Stu, can you remind me when his contract runs out, what the deal was that he signed?
11:00Stuart Watson:It was a four-year deal he signed, so he's still got two and a half years left on that. So fairly well protected. On the flip side, you've got that. You've got the fact that he's a golden boot winner. you've got the fact that there's an obvious desire for Derby to want to sign him because of the links to the manager, all of those different kind of things. It probably spits you out somewhere around the£5 million mark, I would say. It's going to have to be a hit on the nine. I've seen Derby fans saying, given his record recently in his injury history as well, they wouldn't want to kind of push the boat out beyond two, three, something like that.
11:40I think it will definitely have to be more than that. I think it might have to be a compromise somewhere in the middle between what the two parties would want, and that will probably spit you out at four and a half plus add-ons, maybe. Speculating, yeah.
11:56Mark Heath:Okay, so that would be the out, which would mean, excitingly, there could be an in, Stu. There were links shared yesterday. Striker links. Names that we have talked about before, they have been on lists that young Alex has shared, but do you want to bring us up to speed with the kind of two links that you put out and then we can talk about AJ's other potential targets as well
12:16Stuart Watson:Yeah, there's a couple of names that we've been able to finally put out there as very much on it, which is striker target list One is Joel Peru at Leeds who scored tons of goals in the Championship, both for Swansea and Leeds but has found himself, another one who's found himself sort of limited game time in the Premier League this season. Report from Holland, his homeland, saying that he wants to stay at Leeds and fight for his place and that he's not that keen on his next move being back to the Championship. Can't stand that part of it up, but I do know that he's a player that is of interest to Ipswich Town.
13:02But yeah, if we're going by the noises
13:06Stuart Watson:surrounding that deal, that might be unlikely at this juncture. The one that I've been hearing for a long time and I've finally been able to kind of put out there is Sam Surridge, who had a bit of a sort of a nomadic start to his career. He was at Bournemouth, had a few loan spells out, went to Stoke, handful of games there. Then he goes to Forest and he helps fire Forest into the Premier League. He's another one who then didn't really translate into sort of Premier League form, got one goal in that sole season in the Premier League. And he's gone over to the States and he's gone to Nashville.
13:42Stuart Watson:And he's scored sort of a goal every other game over there. He's just finished as second top goal scorer in the MLS to a certain Lionel Messi. And he's got a lot of the Kieran McKenna striker qualities. He's tall, but he's mobile. He's a kind of between the posts poacher. And if we're talking about what maybe Ipswich have lacked in the first half of this season, it's someone to be really clinical. And speaking to friends that support Forrest, they'd say he's one of the most clinical finishers that they've had in recent times. So whether that deal can get done is another big question because there's plenty of other parties interested in Sam Surridge and there'll be a bit of a domino effect going on.
14:25Stuart Watson:Wolves are the club that worries me most on that one. Looks like Strand Larsson is on the move at the moment. They're going to need a striker. can Ipswich persuade someone of that nature to come to a top-end championship club or a bottom-end Premier League club that might be about to pass ways in the summer. We'll have to see.
14:47Mark Heath:Well, Wolves are going down, so what's the appeal there? In terms of money, Stu, what kind of money do you reckon it would take for Sovich to come into Suffolk? Are we talking multi-millions?
15:00Stuart Watson:Yeah, it would have to be. I think they paid five million quid. to sign him when he went there. His stock, you would say, has risen since then. He's got a year left on his contract, but there is an option to extend that by a year. So he's reasonably well protected from that point of view. Don't know where that would land in terms of money, but yeah, multi-million pound signing that would have to be.
15:29Mark Heath:Okay, AJ, both of those names were on lists that you put out. as potential targets. Joel Peru, you've spoken about one here before saying you don't think he'd fit the Kenner system. He doesn't do enough press. But you have, you have spoken before excitedly about Sam Sorridge. So do you want to just talk a little bit about those two in your thoughts on how they might fit a town? Yeah. I mean, it's very interesting. She mentions the domino effect about how, how all of these could, could take shape. And I think that actually they all link up, don't they? In a way where the Strand Larson news that's come out this morning it sounds like he's going to go from Wolves to Crystal Palace which could then be a knock-on effect for whether Peru would be available because Leeds who put in a bid for Strand Larson then would be not getting their striker so that might mean that Perrault stays and then Strand Larson moves on so that then could cause Wolves to go into the striker market for someone like Sam Surridge so domino effects all over as for how they fit in I really like Joel Perot I think that he's a good player I think that he is probably the best finisher a championship club can get but I do just wonder about the other side of the games he's one of those where you put the ball on the plate and he will put it into the back of the net he's got a hell of a shot on him but he's not going to do the hard graft that a George Hurst would do and even Azon would do and even a Tuba Akpom to be honest would do and that is probably the side of things that concerns me and that's why Daniel Farker is the same as well.
17:06There's very similar managers in the way Farker and McKenna and how they want their strikers to be front-footed and aggressive and when Farker first came in, he started playing Perrault as a 10 because he didn't like how little he pressed and put Ruta up front instead. So that is probably one of those concerns, but he will score and that's ultimately what you want from a striker, despite my concerns. And then Saraj is kind of your typical poacher. He will do more of the hard work and hold up play and the physicality and things like that. Probably, again, not to the same extent as a George Hurst, but I think there's a fine balance there between someone that can do that aspect to a degree, but also is much more clinical in front of goal.
17:50You can probably count on between, let's say, signs before the deadline. I'd back on him to go near enough to double digits between now and the end of the season. he's in form obviously he's rejuvenated his career a little bit by going over to the states and given that he was a good championship player before I think he could definitely be one to go up to the next level so if you offer me both I would be taking Sam Surridge of the two but they've kind of have different strengths and weaknesses for each of them.
18:18Mark Heath:Stu we've talked before on this pod this month about if you're going to get a striker we've all spoken about our various kind of thoughts on whether or not they need a striker and clearly the perception out there amongst the fans that the overwhelming feeling seems to be that they do need a striker but we said if they're going to get one it has to be someone who upgrades what they've got um with those two names being linked is it fair to say then it looks like they're
18:37Stuart Watson:looking to bring in a starting striker i think if you're going to do it that would be the reason to do it there's no point bringing someone in that's kind of of a level of of what you've got we've there's pros and cons to to the three options that ipswich have got in the building but they have ultimately got three options um you know it's very easy to get sucked into sort of excited chat around sam surridge and um looking from afar of what he's done in his goal record but is it that different to george hurst in terms of you know if you were if you removed yourself from ipswich town and you were someone saying another club going we're after george hurst you'd suddenly go well he scored goals that got them promoted last time around and his goals per minute record in the Premier League was pretty decent.
19:26Stuart Watson:So we don't watch Sam Surridge week in, week out. I can only go on highlights reels which don't tell you the full picture. Is he or A &Other a bona fide upgrade on what Ipswich have got? And not only can they make the difference this season, but are they someone that can grow with Ipswich, hopefully potentially at a level higher? That is the question that Ipswich have to be asking themselves at the moment. the domino effect is interesting the one that Alex kind of laid out there we're talking about Strand Larson going to Palace, does that mean that Palace then let Mateta go to Forest who are one of the people interested in them does that mean someone like Taiwo Awonyi becomes available at Forest that's the sort of domino effect that we're talking about, again somebody who's kind of scored goals in the Premier League, scored one last weekend for Forest but may find himself dropping down the peck in order.
20:23Stuart Watson:We're going to have quite a few of those situations unfolding over the next few days, I think.
20:28Mark Heath:Yeah, while we're on the subject of opportunity knocks, clearly that's something they've done already in this window with the two signings they've made so far. You've done a bit this morning, AJ, looking at other potential striker targets that may become available. I don't want you to obviously reel off the whole list because I want people to go and read it. That's available now. But do you want to pick out a couple of names from that? It might also be worth throwing into the old chat. Yeah, so there's kind of a mix here of players who would come in and immediately start. There's some that would cost, well, I'll give you a hint, maybe around the£19 million mark that another championship club have been eyeing up.
21:03And then there's others that maybe if Ipswich wanted to bolster their striker ranks but weren't necessarily going for a clear starter, they could also go and get. So different kind of profiles there. I'll bring out two. Number one, David Datro Fafana at Chelsea. I think he's been someone that a lot of town fans have had an eye on for a while. Has good experience in England, played for Burnley in the Premier League and have a decent goal return. Hasn't worked out for him at Chelsea, but has done okay out on loan. And of course, with all the chatter around Chelsea's international loan spots, they've decided that they're better off selling him and recalling him from his loan in Turkey to then be able to sell, sorry, to loan out one of their other youngsters, which I believe will be Kendry Pires possibly going out as well again who's not coming to Ipswich it should be said but yeah Fofana's one who is going to be able to leave according to Fabrizio Romano who said Celtic, Royal Antwerp and Derby have been linked fast, strong, good eye for goal an exciting one and then I'll also put out Patrick Azumang now the thinking behind this is that would he necessarily be available towards the end of this transfer window?
Read the full transcript
22:15No, probably not. There has been reported interest from Leeds and from Palace for kind of 20 million. I don't think that Derby would be keen to sell midway through a season. But Derby also wants Sam Smoddix. Now, could there be something within that deal that could at least take something off a price for Ajermang, who's got eight goals, three assists so far this season, someone that Tam were linked with over the summer, six foot four big powerful us international so you've also kind of got that us link up as well uh with the ownership i think we'd quite like to have a an american striker on the books as well um yeah plenty to like about that one a high ceiling and a proper mckenna striker so that would be ambitious to try and do but maybe with smoddocks going the other way who knows
23:02Mark Heath:get a little discount a bit of trading um stew then i know we've got a few days left obviously uh thursday what are we thursday 11 o 'clock now window doesn't shut till 7 p.m on monday this window though has felt um pretty quiet uh and and the work has been very targeted um clearly you know if we're looking now oh would you say now we're looking at basically one out one in if anything indeed does happen now before the end of the window
23:29Stuart Watson:i think so yeah we discussed some other areas haven't we which i think maybe are now off the table for sure. In terms of potential exits, Ben Johnson was someone that clearly we were looking at maybe moving on given the surplus of right backs. But Harry Clark is out the building now and Ashley Young has picked up what sounds like a quite serious hip injury. So I think it would be prudent to keep Ben Johnson around as backup to Darnell Furlong at right back. Left back, Leif Davis is probably the only position in the squad that hasn't got a kind of proper like-for-like cover, but persuading someone to come in mid-season to essentially warm the bench for someone whose record suggests they're going to start pretty much every game, I think is a big ask.
24:19Stuart Watson:So that's probably something to address in the summer rather than now, I would say. Elkin Baggett, we talked about whether he would go out on loan, but Kieran McKenna has spoken about that already and said that there are very few championship clubs that carry only three centre-halves. I'm not sure he thinks that's a risk worth taking. Elkhorn Baggett is obviously the fourth choice at the moment, so I would imagine if he was going to go out on loan, that would have happened by now. So I reckon he'll stay around. Midfield sorted now with Danil in. Anis Mometi has added to that attacking unit. We've just discussed the striker side of things.
24:55Stuart Watson:It's just whether they want to do something different, a little wild card option across that kind of attacking side of things. We don't know the full extent of Nunez's ankle injury or Villagin's knee injury. The hope is that they're kind of reasonably short-term ones. McKenna said that that's not changed his thoughts on the transfer window. It's not like they've got to go out and replace those. So, yeah, I think in answer to your question, it will probably be a case of Schmodix out and a striker in, hopefully. And that will be it.
25:28Mark Heath:and it's probably worth stressing as well they don't have to if small x doesn't go they can't make the deal work with small x um that doesn't mean they can't sign some because they can then
25:36Stuart Watson:just deregister someone couldn't they so yeah i mean yeah ashley young if it sounds pretty serious he's 40 years of age um yeah great age by the way um the best age yeah yeah uh i'm no longer part of the club i've just dawned on me um yeah he could get deregistered david button could get deregistered if they really wanted to make some space. So there's ways and means that they could make that happen.
26:03Mark Heath:AJ, you just unmuted yourself. Did you want to throw some words in? I was going to ask that exact question, but I'll put another one out there. Again, we've spoken about this a little bit before, but is there wiggle room with Tuba Akpom? Especially if they go out and sign a striker, because then you're into a position where you kind of end up with, now that we've seen him lead the line and it feels like he's kind of part of that striker unit, you'd end up with four. now he's obviously out injured I don't know Stu, was he part of the ones that was in the serious injury category? The ones that Kieran mentioned
26:35Stuart Watson:No, I don't think so I mean it's a groin injury and there was talk when it first happened, oh he might be back next week and so unless they've sort of downplayed that for transfer window reasons I don't know but even putting the injury aside, it's not quite happened for Tuba Akpom in the first half of the season, has it? I think he has kind of morphed more into a nine than a 10 as the season's gone on. Would you want to carry four strikers? Is that a bit over the top? Possibly. I think it will be more to do with the fact that if there is an obligation to buy a Tuba Akpom upon promotion, do Ipswich want to lock themselves into that?
27:17Stuart Watson:I would imagine those sort of clauses are based on if player X makes a certain number of appearances, if Ipswich have got no intention to kind of tie themselves into signing Tuba Rackpom, then maybe that's a conversation they need to have with Ajax and say, look, he's probably not going to play a lot in the second half of the season. You might be better off placing him elsewhere. But that is a conversation now to be having very late in the day. Personally, I don't see it. I think the recent injury setbacks are a reminder of how quickly a very strong-looking squad can suddenly get diluted, that sort of depth.
27:56Stuart Watson:Akbom can play multiple positions and I thought there were some signs of improvement. He started a couple of games up until this recent injury setback. So, yeah, there's a valid discussion to be had around whether that's something Ipswich will do, but I can't see it happening, to be honest.
28:16Mark Heath:Okay, time will tell. Obviously, the last few days of the window. Press us tomorrow. I'm sure that might come up in terms of questions to Kieran McKenna. Pretty much guarantee it, in fact. Another thing to kind of put in the transfer news section, which is essentially a new signing, if you like, is Christian Walton signing a new deal, tying him up for a bit longer, AJ. That came out yesterday as well. That's another bit of good news because obviously he's been tremendous this season. He's taken his opportunity, as a keeper should, with both hands and he's kept hold of it. Yeah, and it's almost like a flip of the scenario that he's had before where he's been the first choice and then through injuries had to drop out and being able to get back in has been a real struggle for him where he's had Hlavke ahead of him in that promotion season and then in the Premier League, he had Muric.
29:03He came in for Muric, then got an injury himself, then found himself behind Alex Palmer. So he's been so unfortunate. And now he's kind of had, almost in a kind of morbid way, he's had that fortune with Alex Palmer's injury that's opened the door for him to get starts. and he's been probably one of the top goalkeepers in the division, given the number of clean sheets he's had in such a short space of time. Obviously, caveat, the back line has helped him a lot with that, that he's made some really important saves. He looks more calm and composed with the ball at his feet than Alex Palmer did when he was starting at the start of the season, I would argue, and he's part of the reason why Town have had this uptick in form and his contract was due to expire at the end of the season.
29:47I think that if fate had gone another way and Alex Palmer hadn't had an injury and was fit for the whole season and was starting as the number one, potentially going into a Premier League campaign, there would definitely be an argument that Christian Walton would be heading out of the door on free to try and find regular football. But fate, as we said, has funny ways of working it out. He's now looking like a top goalkeeper, playing week in, week out. I mean, he's the top goalkeeper that we all knew that he was and could be, given how he's played for Ipswich in the past before injuries. and now he's got a deal that runs until 2028 so fascinating to see what the plans will be for him beyond the season as well but I think there have been clear assurances that he's going to be part of the plans and given his form, why not?
30:31Mark Heath:Stu, Christian Walton, we've had a few of these at Ipswich Town the kind of story arcs Cameron Burgess Junoi Dynasian Christian Walton's had a funny one though as well hasn't he, from being the kind of the unquestioned starter in League 1 then losing his spot for the whole of the Championship season been in and out and now he's back in and he's looking tremendous. It must be, from a mentality point of view, that must be a real challenge though.
30:55Stuart Watson:Massively, yeah. He's had a proper rollercoaster ride, hasn't he, at Ipswich Town? But from my limited dealings with him, he seems a very level, calm character. I know Kieran McKenna talked in the quotes over the new contract about his dedication and professionalism behind the scenes. I always think that goalkeeper unit must be a very strange one to operate in, very different to the rest of the football world, where there's kind of three or four of you training, and you always hear about the goalkeeper union, and we all push each other and back each other. But there must be a little bit of kind of competition in there that you want to be the one that takes that one spot.
31:37Stuart Watson:And a lot of it comes down to luck and fate, doesn't it, with a goalkeeper? and Walton's been unfortunate a couple of times with the injury going into the championship season and Hlaki's form and then gets in after Mewic is dropped and then gets the injury himself, which means Palmer then goes out and gets signed just by virtue of the fate that that setback came in the middle of a transfer window. So full credit to him for training, dedicating, being ready whenever called upon and he's been excellent. He's already right up there in terms of championship clean sheets, having only been in the team since October.
32:16Stuart Watson:So he's been a fantastic asset for Ipswich Town over a long period. And when he signed, he came to put down some roots. I think he'd been fed up of being sent out on loan year on, year out. He's come to Ipswich to find a home and he certainly found it.
32:32Mark Heath:Absolutely. Good stuff. Right then, let's move on to the game this weekend, boys. Oh, yeah, there is a game this weekend. It's a big one as well. Preston at home, chance to avenge an earlier defeat this season. Norwich did Town a favour on Monday night, didn't they? Resurgent Norwich. But again, clearly what happened last weekend, Town need to get back on the winning train, especially with this one being the last home game before the hellish, the month from hell, trademark Alex Jones, stretching February five straight away games. But Preston, who having looked like they were going to be very much among the promotion contenders, have hit a bad run of form, AJ.
33:08Mark Heath:They've lost three in a row, four of the last six. They've just been caned at Middlesbrough, 4-0. And they've got some key people out for this one. They're nutcase up front, chief amongst them. How are you feeling heading into this one? I think it's the perfect game for Ipswich to come back to, to be honest, knowing that Preston are still... I mean, they're still ninth. They're not a million miles off it. They're only a point off the playoffs still. And being able to damage a team that will be kind of in and around them still will be good. And also a team that, as you mentioned, are pretty badly out of form.
33:45I think that I kind of, they were one of those that were always expected to tail away, weren't they? When you look at the squad, when you look at maybe some of the experience within there, I think the biggest reason for it is that they've not been out and signed lots of players in January. and that has left them with quite a thin group and they're just tired, I think, more than anything. There's some good players in there, but you could sense maybe towards the Christmas period that some of the numbers behind their run were starting to tail a little bit. And even though they went on a long, unbeaten run, there were a lot of draws in there.
34:19And now things are just starting to turn against them since the Cup exit against Wigan. They've not scored in the last four in all competitions and the result's kind of getting heavier. 1-0 at home to Derby, 3-0 at home to Preston, 4-0, as you mentioned, at Borough. They had Jordan Story, who was sent off in that game. Militin Osmijic, who's been their main man up front, has had all sorts of disciplinary issues over the years. A good player, by all accounts, but as you say, a bit of a loose cannon, I think, to put it lightly. That's diplomatic, yeah. Yeah, yeah. So he'll be out for this one. They've got Hughes out, Potts out, Iverson out, Brady, former Norwich is out.
34:57So they're light. They've not really been able to add that much in the window. Beware the wounded animal is always the thing to say because ultimately they're going to have a real kick up the backside from Paul Heckingbottom. But I think that having come off a 4-0 thrashing at Borough where their fans are filmed leaving the stadium at half-time, when you look at the fixture list, probably the last place you want to go is Portman Road where town have been so imperious.
35:25Mark Heath:Yeah, I think off the pitch they've got some kind of investment talks going on, haven't they, as well? So there's kind of stuff going on off the pitch as well, which fans are maybe not too impressed with. Stewie, how do you feel about this one? Obviously, they lost there earlier in the season, but they need three points in this one out of that run in February.
35:44Stuart Watson:Yeah, start with that reverse fixture game at Deepdale. It wasn't one I was at, watched from afar, but that was a really frustrating day in the early start of the season for Ipswich, where they got the early goal. when Ipswich weren't dealing with long balls particularly well. It was Jacob Greaves who had a bit of a moment for that goal. And then they just parked the bus and Ipswich had no response to it really. And I guess that's my only fear going into this one. The wounded animal element of Preston have had a couple of beatings, backs to the wall, that they come to Portman Road and it's deep block.
36:20Stuart Watson:And it could be one of those days if Ipswich don't get an early breakthrough. and a bit of edginess builds in the crowd, only takes a kind of moment playing out from the back to go wrong and things can unfold that way. But Alex is right. This is, you know, if you could pick any sort of game this weekend for Ipswich to have at home off the back of a defeat against an out-of-form side, it would have to be this. And there's a bit of pressure on this when you're looking at the games ahead, the February, the five straight away games, The home form has been really good. If Ipswich are serious about a top two charge and closing the gap on Borough and Coventry, this is the sort of game that they've got to go out and win.
37:07Stuart Watson:Simple as that.
37:09Mark Heath:Before we get to who plays for town, AJ, I haven't asked you this. I don't know how much prep you've done on Preston. You'll be writing the preview, obviously. But when you look at their squad, I'm a stats man now, as you know. You look at the squad, the players who seem to stand out are Lewis Dobbin. Six goals, five assists. And Alfie Devine, who's a midfielder, five goals, two assists. Are those the players you'll be looking at? Yeah, I mean, both on loan, which is quite an interesting one. Dobbin was at Norwich last year, has joined them from, I believe it was from Villa, isn't it? Didn't really work from at Norwich.
37:43And then all of a sudden he's gone to Preston and he's banging him in. So, yeah, he's kind of formed this partnership with Dan Jebberson up front. Jean Jebbesson, again, in previous seasons has not at all worked out for him. On loan at Watford, for example, was pretty poor. And Bournemouth have sent him out to Preston. Five goals, two assists isn't terrible. Devine was one that I was kind of looking at as a potential town target this month. Maybe in the end didn't think that it made sense for Tottenham to send him out on loan to Ipswich, given how well he's doing at Preston. But again, five goals, two assists.
38:16kind of chief creator in that midfield three where you've got Ben Whiteman who anchors behind the back line. There's going to need to be a lot of protection for that back line as well because they're missing key players. And with Story out as well with that red card and the fact that they're just shipping goals, they're not really doing enough to cover them in that aspect. So definitely from a defensive point, there's a way to get at them. But beware of what they can do going forward. Devine, as you've mentioned, Dobbin, as you've mentioned. but also Dan Jebberson, I think, is one to keep an eye on.
38:50Mark Heath:Divine is a player I wish Town would sign purely for his name. It adds itself to headlines, doesn't it? Anyway, Stu, who do you reckon will play for Town? Because obviously they changed a lot last time out and it didn't work for them. Who would you be putting in your starting XI this weekend?
39:09Stuart Watson:Yeah, I'm just trying to think. Probably be a sort of reverting to the Bristol City team. that was a good night wasn't it sort of reasonably close to that i'm trying to think on the fly here we talked about that sort of back five six base being pretty nailed in now with with walton furlong o'shea kipre davis matasiwa i think they're all pretty pretty inked in on on the team sheet um i think do you give me on his baby for example i was going to say we've got the dan hill situation now is he thrown straight in he signed on Tuesday so he's had a little bit of training with with the team um I'd be surprised because he's not had a great deal of football at Sunderland in the first half of the season so I think he's someone that might might be eased in um so I'd probably go with Dienz Kuyusta uh who frustrated the hell out of me at Sheffield United last weekend when he came off the bench and I love watching Jens when he's in full flow and he's silky smooth and he's turning and he's driving and he's been great particularly in the home games when the going's good but when that was a kind of a backs to the wall situation there was a little bit of a couple of times he kind of got knocked off the ball and he was more interested in throwing his arms up and appealing to the referee and not playing to the whistle and he jogged back into position a little bit All that said, against a Preston side that may come to Portman Road with little ambition, I do think he's someone that can give you a little bit more forward thrust in that midfield.
40:44Stuart Watson:So I'll go with Jens. Front four. Well, let's open it up. Let's go straight to the striker debate because that's probably going to be the biggest one, isn't it? Even as on excellent against Bristol City. George Hurst, who I had in my predicted 11 for Sheffield United, I thought his kind of running in behind qualities would be suited to, you know, getting some joy off of McGuinness and me. Didn't happen for him, did it, at Bramall Lane. What do you do up front this weekend, lads?
41:17Mark Heath:Well, I would go for the obvious. I'd go for Ivan the Great. That's my take. He played well, should carry on, in my opinion. That's the way it should work. AJ, what are you saying? Yeah, I think I'm going to agree with this one. I think start building on a little bit of form. Look, there's no guarantee as well that Ipswich are going to go and sign a striker this month as much as we want them to. And I think they're trying to build someone up a bit with the form that Azon's been in, where he had that really good display against Bristol City and then at Sheffield United, even though things didn't really work for him.
41:51I thought there were some really good glimpses of what he was able to do in difficult circumstances, it should be said. And I just want to see him get a little bit of a run now. I know that he can't start week in, week out probably. He's not really done that, especially in English football in his career. So there will have to be some rotation elements in there. But I want to see him get a chance. And look, I think all it will take, as he says, all it will take is maybe one or two for him to really kick on and become a top asset for a switch this season. So, yeah, I'd want to see Azon in for this one and George Hurst on the bench to come on towards the end.
42:27Stuart Watson:Three and behind. There's some, sorry, Mark. There's some obvious ones, judging that if we're bearing in mind that Philogene and Nunez are out, let's work on that basis. We'll find out more at the pre-match press conference. Has to be Jack Clark on the left. Has to be, for me, Wes Burns on the right. Ipswich are looking far more effective as an attacking force. It's not a great reflection on Ipswich. They've spent best part of£30 million on two right wingers, and we're still talking about Wes Burns being the best option on the right, fresh from a year-long absence with an ACL. But here we are.
43:01Stuart Watson:They do look more effective with his direct running and low cutbacks at the moment. So I can understand why he couldn't play two games in a week, but he has to come back in. And then in the 10, Mimeti, full league debut? What do you reckon? Yeah, I think for me that that makes the most sense. Where do you go with your options here? I'd say there's three. You can go with Sam Smoddick, didn't work for him at Sheffield United. Obvious speculation now, just seeing that Wrexham, according to Pete O 'Rourke, are now in the race for him. So there could be more teams that kind of come to the party for him, which could push him closer to the exit door if Derby don't go and get that deal done.
43:45I'd probably still want to have him there, even if there is speculation. I'd want to have him as a bench option, but pardon me, I don't think as a starter for this week, you could go, if you're going to start Wes on the right, you could put Sindra in the 10 and give that a run out. Sindra's spoken about how he sees his long-term future as the 10, and I think Kieran McKenna has also kind of said to him that that's probably going to be the most likely situation. But for me, Anis Mimeti has got eight goals and six assists in this division. I know he's not a natural out-and-out central number 10, but liked what I saw off the bench at Sheffield United.
44:19Let's see what he can do from the start of this one. I think it's a game that would suit him as well. So yeah, Mimeti and the 10 would be my pick.
44:26Mark Heath:Rexham in for Smoddix you say drive that price up lovely stuff I would definitely go Wes Burns on the right I mean he's looked tremendous since he's come back and I'd definitely go Anis Mometti in the 10 new siding full of confidence got the numbers let's see what he can do and go from there so we'll find out when that team sheet comes out interesting though to see a couple of options there may see for the first time predictions then boys you boys are running away with it I think you and I both got Jack Clark as the first goal scorer, the only highlight from last weekend, AJ. So you've closed some ground on Stu, and I'll have stretched my lead over Ross for the wooden spoon, which means that you have to...
45:07Mark Heath:No, actually, Stu has to go first as the leader. What are you going to predict? AJ's not happy with that.
45:16Stuart Watson:I'll be honest, I haven't given this any thought at all, because we've been very deep in transfer stuff the last few days. it's important because AJ's closing the gap I've got to start taking this seriously now I've been doing a few uh wild card picks just for just for funsies the last few weeks but um yeah
45:39Stuart Watson:uh that's an obvious first goal scorer pick isn't that I mean Jack Clark's the most obvious one isn't he yeah if I'm being sensible and I'm and that would be the one I mean you could you could throw in a bit of memetti for fun couldn't you fully debut to do something um it's wes burns during another a moment can azon rekindle his form from believe in star that's the thing you don't know do you i'll i'll go jack clark and i'll say yeah a solid 2-0 victory for ipswich town
46:16Mark Heath:aj delighted with that um i can assume that was going to be your exact oh okay right so i had thought about this prediction unlike stew however stew went first so here we go um i am going to look i have to catch him i i'm chasing here so even though i do think it will be two nil and jack clark i'm gonna go with something else because why not i'm gonna say three nil up switch i'm gonna go for them to really compound some preston misery and i will hedge my bets that even as on will start and even as on will score 3-0 even as on 3-0 even as on uh 2-0 3-0 is it going to be 1-0 uh i don't really want to go for the same scores you've got um will it will press and grab a goal being as they haven't scored for a long time um i'll say i'll say i'll say 3-1 and I'll go Wes Burns I'd love to see Wes score and I feel like he's definitely going to start I'll say 3-1 Wes Burns we've got 2-0 Jack Clark a very solid pick from the leader in the clubhouse and AJ going for 3-0 and Yves Nazon Rossi who is off today will obviously share his thoughts as well and we'll put those pictures out pre-match anything else to mention then boys it's been a concise, a tight 50 minute pod thus far, anything else you want to get off your chest before we take our leave?
47:47Stuart Watson:While we were kind of debating the top end of the pitch for that game and kind of made me rethink about you talking about it anymore, is it just a striker have they got enough in the forward unit and I start to look at it and you go I'll read them out, the forward unit as a whole right wing, follow Gelly Burns McAteer, number 10 Nunez, Mometi, Smoddix left, Filagene and Clark up front, Hurst as on Akpom, right? But if we put a line through Smoddix if we assume that he's going we've got a cross next to Nunez Filagene and Akpom for injuries at the moment, so that leaves take all of them out of the equation, is 1, 2, 3 4, 5, 6 7, 7 available players for a front 4 which, you know, bearing in mind McKenna likes to change his entire front four within games, that's below the numbers that he would like within there.
48:45Stuart Watson:So I think a lot will depend on the severity of these injuries, which we've had some mixed reports on so far. One minute they were short term, next minute they were significant. So we'll find out a little bit more on that at the moment. But there is an argument that for all the talk about depth, that Ipswich could do with maybe one more little versatile option in there. The problem they've got now is that they've hit five loans. So if it was like, oh, we'll go and get a Premier League youngster just to kind of layer up the debt, it's not as big an option now, is it? And I guess that then feeds into the ACPOM debate that we've just had, but then you're stripping someone else away from it.
49:28Stuart Watson:It's interesting. I do know that Kieran McKenna talked about, I don't think we've been overpowered in terms of depth. We've just been lucky with injuries, was his kind of comments last week. So I wouldn't completely rule out another kind of little versatile attacker in there. Yeah, just thought I'd throw that out there. I do think it will be one in, one out, but we'll see.
49:51Mark Heath:You never know. You're saying there's a chance. You never know, Dee, in the transfer window. AJ, anything more from you? Should we end with some fun non-football bit? Yes. I know you like one of those. Well, you say yes, Stu. I want to bring you into this because this was something that you mentioned, I believe it was actually on the way back from Sheffield United and I thought it would be good pod content because we hadn't spoken about your birthday that much apart from doing the increments as we did that. And you mentioned your two favourite gifts that you got for your birthday. I feel like that would be good pod content because the second one in particular has really kind of captivated me.
50:32And I feel, I feel intrigued now as to get one of these.
50:35Mark Heath:My interest is peaked. What? He's led forward. I have.
50:40Stuart Watson:What did you get to do? This is a stage in life. I'm at things that I'm genuinely my favorite things in my life at the moment. One is a, is a crepe maker, which also doubles up as an omelette maker. It's like a circular hot plate. Um, yeah, which which i'm using every day and the thought of using it excites me that i'll go and sort out an omelette for my lunch in a little bit um the other is one of those uh they're called like shakti mats have you seen those the little spiky mats that you lay on it's like no you're not seeing one of those it's it's not the the official it's a knockoff version but it's one of those it's like lots of lots of little spikes you roll out the mat and there's a spiky pillow and you lay on it and uh and uh it's great it's like an acupuncture type thing and my sleep has never been better so i can uh you sleep on it i can recommend that no i don't sleep through the night on it but you lay on it for like 30 minutes or whatever before bed i'm with you and then uh yeah i guess it's i don't know that's something with bringing the blood to the surface and all
51:48Mark Heath:that sort of stuff but that's great that sounds tremendously exciting stew a shakti mat yeah wow and a crepe maker so what have you been making crepes as well for the family uh yeah
52:03Stuart Watson:yeah i've been knocking a few crepes out for the family um now and again a bit of lemon and sugar but mainly mainly omelets yeah the omelets yeah got to get the eggs in i'd um we all know that
52:14Mark Heath:alex is a fan of a croissant for breakfast i had a uh a protein smoothie this morning steward i've got a uh a recipe that i've fallen upon which is excellent which involves for the gains absolutely you got to hit the macros two raw eggs mix them in then listen friends try this at home you take three strawberries handful of blueberries one banana two tablespoons of farge the greek no fat yogurt zero percent for the protein 200 milliliters of milk skimmed ideally wear it all up in your nutribullet makes a absolutely lovely breakfast smoothie hits you your 20 grams of protein in the morning bish bash bosh he's a happy man aj's dying to say something about me consuming too many eggs i can tell raw eggs i assume is the the element that you're going to pick up on there i wasn't going to but it did kind of twig in my mind a little bit yeah you don't taste them obviously you just they're just in there is that not a salmonella risk no they're just uh if anything that you absorb them better don't you when they're raw when you've got a market immune system yeah uh anyway friends um that brings us to the end of this podcast in terms of things i've been excited about and i'm very excited about both the juice cut maker and his shakti mat i also got very excited just i had a day off friends and i thought right i'm going to clean the inside of the of the heathmobile ahead of heading to portland road this weekend now i previously as i've mentioned experimented with the banana dine from molecular but i just done it on the old dashboard and i was I was quite impressed with it.
53:42Mark Heath:Yesterday, I went crazy in the old whip. I literally did every bit of the car, the dashboard, all the trim, and every bit of vinyl in your car with Banana Dine. And it is brilliant, friends. Absolutely brilliant. I can't speak hardly enough of it. The car looks so clean now. And I also use some of the anti-fog stuff they've got for the inside of your windows. Again, absolutely spotless. Looks tremendous. So I'd highly recommend that. Use the code KOATEN at molecular-uk.com for 10 % off all their cleaning products. As I say, Bananadyne, get yourself some of that and the anti-fog stuff. I've got the wheel stuff to try, hopefully, in the next few days.
54:19Mark Heath:But if there's anything like the rest of the stuff I've used so far, it's been tremendous. And also use the code KOAT to get 20 % off at stardustspirits.co.uk for their multiple and various award-winning alcoholic concoctions. AJ looks like he wants to say something. No? I was doing the hand thing for Stardust Spirit. Apologies. When I remember. When I remember. As we've already said before, I'm a big fan of the Cascade Rum and the Single Malt, and AJ loves the Biscoff Vodka, is it, AJ? Yeah, Vodka. So those are those. And also, if you could leave us a five-star review on iTunes, just help us visibility-wise in the charts.
54:54Mark Heath:It helps more people find us. That'd be tremendous. And follow us, of course, on social media, Kings of Anglia, on YouTube, Instagram, X, Facebook. Me, AJ, and Rossi are also on Blue Sky. and we're also on TikTok, aren't we, AJ? He says, hoping we are still on TikTok. Yes, tremendous. All right, friends, a concise, less than an hour pod in the books. We've covered sexy stuff. We've covered Preston this weekend. We'll all be at the game on Saturday with a special guest as well, our competition winner, Noel, who will be joining us at Portman Road. So if you do see us, come and say hello. And we'll be back next week on Monday, of course, transfer deadline day.
55:30Mark Heath:we'll have our usual post map poster deadline after dark that won't actually be as as late as normal post deadline 7 p.m podcast on monday we'll speak to you next time
