In short
Ipswich Town’s 3-0 home win over Swansea City, plus discussion of recent form, key performers, tactical choices, and upcoming home games (Hull City, Leicester).

Key claims
- Ipswich’s display was “one-sided,” with early pressure and efficient game management; Swansea offered little, including no touches in the Town penalty area in the first half.
- The win followed a similar midweek “professional job” vs Watford, suggesting a return to basics after earlier setbacks.
- Anis Mehmeti’s left-wing role is a major X-factor; Ipswich now face a selection dilemma with multiple attacking options.
- Christian Walton kept clean sheets; the back line protected him well.
- Azor Matasiwa and Darnell Furlong are avoiding yellow-card bans (“tightrope” status).
Notable examples
- Mehmeti scored early after a fast corner sequence; his shot curled into the top corner.
- Swansea’s only notable shots: Yaukuye (end of first half), Cullen (after break), Vipotnik (crossbar in stoppage time).
- Goals: Mehmeti (1-0), Mehmeti’s involvement leading to Ivan Azon’s 2-0, and George Hurst’s 3-0 off Mehmeti’s cross.

0:39Ross Halls:hello everybody it's me roscoe and welcome to the latest episode of the kings of anglia it was town podcast sponsored by molecular uk yeah i'll continue use the code koa10 and support a very good local suffolk company um to do your car cleaning business and bits and bobs and that um and yeah what what difference a week make ladies gentlemen because uh town make it back-to-back wins a comfortable win against swansea city back at portland road i'm joined by alex jones my friend just you and me um just the two of us to discuss another town win how are you i'm good yeah second monday pod in a row where it's just been us two uh the one that we recorded seven days ago was not one of my favorites of this season we had to be quite brutal but balance it with a lot of fair reflection as well for where it's which are at um and then if there are any kind of doubts or concerns it's which shut up a lot of those with the last two wins so i'm good um i've been steering all the print stuff today which i really enjoyed because i've clocked as well when i'm writing things and doing headlines especially for print as well because all the print stuff for this one day it's great fun with with uh stew off and markers in porto in portugal is on me so you do a lot of terms like um well i've already kind of pre-planned the pod title for this one which will be uh swan swept aside but can can uh the tigers be tamed and you know what right this is the kind of stuff that you just end up it's literally if you read tomorrow's uh eadt you we'll probably see at least three or four mentions of these kind of things.
2:23So I'm very much in that mind zone, and I'm kind of very aware of all the football jargony stuff that you have to do for print at the moment. So let's see if I can bring any of that to the fore in the next few minutes of this podcast.
2:39Ross Halls:You don't like clunky. We don't like clunky headlines. It's got to read right, but there's times where you've had to sometimes do a clunky headline because that's how it fits. We've had it with those YouTube captions before. haven't we? That's what we've found where you know what, I feel like we're doing quite well on the YouTube stuff. Should I? I'm going to try and do something, right? To bring something out that's a good help. It's a book, but it's underneath a load of other books. And I'm worried that as I dip off camera, I'm going to knock over all the books and everything to the side of my bed.
3:06Live radio for you, mate. Live radio, Blimey. Oh my god. We've got some nice Japanese.
3:12Ross Halls:If you haven't already subscribed to the AEADT subscription, then you know you have to now just to see AJ trying to find this book. Just to see me try and find the books. I've got lots of really nice ones. There's a nice Japanese murder mystery novel. Sorry, no, that's not the Japanese murder mystery novel. That's the English one. Here's the Japanese murder mystery novel. We're big into murder mystery novels at the moment. That's for me. And the other one that I've got, perfect, what we've just been talking about, is this one. Extra time beckons, penalties loom, how to use and abuse the language of football.
3:46yeah this is a lot of a lot of fun and a lot of good use when you like me are having to write all sorts of footbally terms and you find yourself kind of being drawn one way or another the football long read headline rule of three on a plate when to use that getting in on the act a bad day at the office hex goal thriller it's a whole book of it I love it and in the terms of George Hurst and the words of George Hurst rather um it is my bread and butter yes indeed I'll have
4:18Ross Halls:to give a big shout out to Hefe because he does very well in sexing up my headlines uh he knows he sees something and he knows that's going to work well and it normally does so uh but yeah I'll have to maybe get that book maybe if um let me know how to get that because I do need to improve on on bits and bobs like that but I've done well since like when I first started this job I wasn't a writer I was more the you know the cameraman and stuff like that but now I'm you know bending into bending in. That's not a word. It is a word, but it's not the word I want to use. You can already see the problems that we face here.
4:47Ross Halls:Yeah. But yeah, I'm doing more stuff. You know me, ladies and gentlemen, I love my ex-blue stuff. You know, if ex-blue something happens on the weekend or someone signs for a new club, Roscoe's got your sword. They'll let you know. I'll let you know where they're signed. But anyway, got a bit of a tangent there. We're going to talk about a win, AJ, which is good. A very good win midweek against Watford. Just a professional job. And this one against Swansea, just comfortable in my eyes, cruised to victory, a 3-0 win, back at Porton Road, nearly a month from the last home game. Just your opening thoughts, my friend, because it was just nice being back, seeing some familiar faces.
5:29Ross Halls:I was joking to a few people, I forgot what you look like. It's been that long. Yeah, I actually had to be redirected walking into the stadium because they changed some of the press entrance bits. And I had a steward say, do you know where you're going? I was like, well, I used to, but you've changed all the ways in. Brilliant to be back. And brilliant to have what was a really pretty dominant display from Ipswich here. And quite similar to the Watford game, the stats probably don't do it justice, whereas then you dig a little bit deeper. And if you watch any extended highlights, or if you were there at the game, you will see just how one-sided this game was.
6:11Town up within three minutes. They should have had one, if not two goals after that. In the immediate aftermath, the way they were playing was shades of that 2023-24 promotion-winning team. The first time I really felt that this season. Then get the second just before halftime. After the break was probably the period where Swansea, a better team, would have done more with that, I think, where Town probably weren't quite at it in the same way, but I just thought Swansea was so poor. They had three shots on target. One of them was Yaukuye right at the end of the first half, curling a shot at Walton.
6:49The other was Cullen after the break, and then the last one was Vipotnik with that Stamina shot, and Vipotnik hit the crossbar deep in stoppage time when the game was very much dead. They didn't offer anything. They didn't have a touch in the Town penalty area for the first half of the game, and it just felt very comfortable. It always felt like they needed the third goal. They get that, but they were never in any real danger. So two performances and results that are quite similar in a way and it feels a little bit like they've gone back to basics again after that Wrexham defeat. We've said that earlier in the season where they've had losses and they needed to react and McKenna's kind of taken back some of the elements, gone straight back to basics is the best way to put it.
7:35and that's what helps it for which results like they have in the last two.
7:40Ross Halls:Yes and clean sheets as well which I'm sure Christian Walton is very pleased about and of course the back line because you can see five in a game you want to sort of shake that off and keep some clean sheets which is great. We're going to hear from Kieran McKenna first of all AJ and then we're going to get into my five five don't know why I've done that talking points from the win because I want to put them all in segments because there's little moments I won't talk about the game for the whole 90 minutes because we'll be here all day. And to be fair, it was a pretty, as I said, comfortable victory.
8:09Ross Halls:There's not much really to take from it really. It's just like, yeah, just pretty good down at the office. But yes, here from Kieran McKenna who I don't think wants to say it was comfortable. I think Stu asked him it was comfortable but I think McKenna went, no, you know what, it wasn't. But yeah, let's hear what Kieran McKenna had to say. Kieran, congratulations, 3-0. I must be very pleased with that. That was an ultimately uncomfortable. Yeah, it was certainly hard work no doubt about that but I think when you go about it in the way that we did you make it I can never say comfortable but you make it as as a yeah as efficient as it could have been because Swansea are a really sort of different opponent I said it and they're a really different opponent than what we faced most of the time this year really good football inside loads of technical players who really really want to get the ball in play and get the ball on the floor so we We worked really well over the last couple of days.
9:07Ross Halls:Players approached it with a lot of humility. Understood what it was going to take. First half, that meant really aggressive with our pressure. Had to push on extra bodies. Pretty much go man to man. Dara and Seti were pressing right up to the edge of their box and really trying to limit them in that way. And then we showed some real good passages of football to play all the way through their press, which again is a good press and we broke it really well with some really good football to go through the pitch and hurt them and get the goals. And in second half, again, a lot of humility to recognise the state of the game, defend, block the middle of the pitch, keep them out of threatening areas and limited them well and still had the better chances in the second half really to extend the lead and did with the one goal.
9:48Ross Halls:So, yeah, liked the way we went about it, really recognised what the opponent was and what we would need to do and that's so important in this league. And the next one comes around really quick and it's really different again, so we'll have to do the same things. Yeah, I think that's perfect words, AJ. Efficient. I don't know if you also picked up about the nickname Cedric's kit for A. You went out of Ciddy or Ceddy. Ceddy. There's a few players that have done that with him. And I don't know. What do you think of that nickname? There's one in particular we touched on last year. I haven't heard Kieran McKenna do it.
10:22Ross Halls:He normally does a name. No, he doesn't do their full full name. He just says Cedric or something. Yeah. They're not the whole like. I don't know. there's one player that's got like loads of middle names um but yeah it's still it could be worse it could be nelly for dan neal which i think we touched on last week is just the worst oh come on we can do better than that hips which town first team squad because that is uh that's not great no but um but yeah efficient uh win aj and i want to start off with the first talking point Anastasia Metty bringing the X-factor my friend scores the early goal he's having a very good start to life in a town shirt of course he scored his first goal away at Wrexham which was a bad result but he's just bringing goal contributions all over the pitch and playing on the left in this game and he's just for me as I said bringing the X-factor yeah the way that he's adapted has been pretty exceptional and we saw glimpses of it against Sheffield United on his debut then against Preston in a game where Tam were, especially by their home match standards, were way, way off it in that game.
11:34And I think he was probably Ipswich's most potent attacking threat for a lot of that game. And you look beyond that, he was exceptional at Derby. He scored in the Wrexham defeat. And then from there, he was benched at Watford in that midweek last week. this was a real coming of age performance and there's two different bits to look at with this one let's talk about the goal first of all as well because Ipswich went at this game from the off, they won a corner inside 10 seconds, I think it was probably 8-9 seconds on the clock when I think it was Davis who won that set piece down the left you could really see them pushing to get a fast start, they had this run of home games obviously around Christmas time and a lot of those matches had Ipswich scoring very early on and going on to win quite convincingly because coming from behind at Portman Road is a tough old thing to do.
12:30And this was a great example of that. They get the goal. Huge credit to Dan Neal. Nelly, for his spin on the ball, takes on his mat. He gets the midfielder, Widel, that he just absolutely leaves in the dust. Spins past him. It's a nice through ball. Up to Mometi, who then plays Davis into a more advanced area, the cutbacks deflected, and Mometti rifles. It's one of those kind of powerfully placed shots, isn't it, where he gets a real curl on it, he puts it right in the top corner, but the venom he has on it is exceptional. I don't know what your view of that one was like.
13:06Ross Halls:Yeah, no, I just remember just, whoa. I was like, wow, I wasn't expecting that. And then, thankfully, thank you, Anas, he did a run and celebrate right next to me, so that's always good. When he runs the other direction, I'm like, oh, bloody hell. I'm happy with scored but he's gone that anyway and it's not good for a photographer who's trying to capture those winning moments or those moments where we're going to use hopefully for front pages which is the front page today on EADT so thank you very much yeah very much so but yeah really good goal even the Wrexham goal he just he just fond of bastard it in didn't he and this one was sort of similar yeah slightly different range slightly different style this is more of the kind of Mometti highlight reel goal and again a slightly different one all of it which is left wingers have uh very different kind of finishes don't they this is a slightly different one to clark who rolls it you've got philagin who very much bends it and then you've got mimetti who hits it and it stays here and the other thing we should say about anis as well is that the change was made for him to start on the left i thought this might have happened at watford last week to give jack clark a rest because i thought he was knackered at rexham but yeah mimetti on the left in this in this game he, spoiler alert, ends up with a goal and an assist across the 90 for the third goal after his opener plays a role in all three but there's definitely a talking point to have around the left wing situation at Ipswich where Jadon Villagin's obviously out of the picture with his knock but before this had been Ipswich's best player so far this season with his output, Jack Clark in his absence has now become the top scorer in the team but is Anis Mameti better suited in the Sipswich team to playing on that left wing role.
14:48It's a crazy dilemma to have, isn't it, with all of these options, but the way that he plays the role is very different. It's very Nathan Broadhead, isn't it? He comes in narrow, and obviously that suits the same kind of overloads that we saw in that 2023-2014 where the left winger comes in, you can almost have a four behind the striker, and that's then helped because Davis doesn't have to worry about inverting into midfield, and unfortunately, I still don't think that's working for him. I still don't I think that's his best position. It's no surprise that this, one of his best performances this season, comes where he was exclusively bombing down the outside of Mometi's flank.
15:24And there is no other winger in this team like Anis Mometi. The other two want to stay high and wide, whereas Anis Mometi comes in narrow and allows that to happen. So I'm fascinated to see what's going to happen now because Ipswich and Kieran McKenna have a real dilemma and a real headache about trying to piece this all together able to get the best out of their team, but also ensure that their best players are playing as well. And in that front four, that is, well, the three behind the striker, let's say, that is incredibly difficult.
15:55Ross Halls:Yeah, indeed. And I think I mentioned it after his derby performance. I think, yeah, he's one of my new favourite players. What are your boys? He's one of my boys. He's definitely bringing the X Factor to this team. I just loved watching him play, and that opening goal was very nice indeed. And I can just see him scoring more and more. Definitely, if he does play in that left role. What do you like about him so far, AJ, as a whole? Because he's a bargain. We've sort of robbed Bristol City a little bit there. I feel like that's only three million plus. It's not a bad bit of business. No, it's not.
16:28I'm sure that Bristol City, at the end of the day, if you'd offered them... I've used the end of the day on so many podcasts. What's going on? Every week I say that. But yeah, if you'd offered them three million for them to go in January or let them go for free, in the summer i still think that they would take that three million in january what do i like about him proper team player he does all the hard work i think is one thing to say off off ball stuff out possession excellent the way that he plays that left-sided role is great but also when he plays in the 10 he drifts really well i i was quite fearful that with him being a more natural left winger that if you're playing him in the 10 he would want to drift more to one side and then And that would leave a bit of a kind of a void where, how would you work that with Davis, where you'd have the winger who'd stay high and wide and Mimetti would probably stay quite near and then you'd have no spaces for Davis to attack.
17:21And that was a big concern for me. But the way that he drift, he was more than happy and comfortable to kind of end up spending a lot of the games he's played as the 10, almost drifting to the right and staying maybe a little bit nearer to Wes on that side, where obviously with Furlong not attacking, you don't have the same kind of overload in those areas. So that was really, really good. The versatility is good. His footwork's good. The ball seems to stick to him. He's got that kind of real tenacity and grit about the way that he plays. I love the fact he's humble and down to earth. We'll hear from him in a minute and you can kind of get that vibe from him.
17:59Yeah, so much to like. And obviously the fact he can hit these shots really, really well. we've seen his catalogue from Bristol City and even from Wickham. And now we've got a real, well, his second goal. This is the one that really kind of states his arrival at Ipswich Town, doesn't it?
18:16Ross Halls:Yes, it does indeed. And yeah, at the end, he got sort of pushed to do the fist pump. Needs a bit of work, that one, though, Anas. I know he wasn't probably really wanting to do it, but... I've seen worse. Yeah, yeah, Nunes. Better than Marcelino's, where it was kind of the... Yeah, yeah. he's got better but yeah this team still needs to work on the fist pumps I think Azor's just there now I think he's just about there but yeah Kieran McKenna get them out on the training pitch doing this come on we need to have proper practice I do think I'm doing the pre-match presser on Friday with not able to go and I think that might have to be one of the questions I put to Kieran McKenna can we start having some sessions practicing the fist pumps please yeah especially now in this part of the season and where wins are going to be crucial and they're going to feel like a really big moment when you, especially at home, we've got two home games coming up.
19:09Ross Halls:So, yeah, we shall see. But let's hear then, AJ, as you mentioned, from Anis, who is a very humble lad, as you mentioned, and a very good talker, though. So let's hear from him. Anis, that was a big win, wasn't it? Your first of three successive home games here at Portman Road? Yeah, massive result and good to be back at Portman Road with a win now. Yeah, a few games now back at home. So, yeah, we just got to take it game by game and get wins on the board. And your first home goal as well for Ipswich. That must have been a special moment, a special finish as well. Yeah, of course, special moment.
19:42Ross Halls:Obviously, I scored that right to my way with the away supporters. But, yeah, today was a bit more special. And, yeah, the important thing was the three points. Because goals have always been a massive part of your game. And I guess playing in the final third, you were expected to contribute and you have been. Yeah, that's my game. I put pressure on myself to deliver, whether it's scoring goals for the team and assisting. Even in games where your performance might not be good, you've got to find ways to affect the game. That's what I try and do every game. I'm playing in a slightly different role with Marcelino in the side.
20:16Ross Halls:Maybe not as central for you today. To be honest, I've been more natural in my career playing off the left and rolling inside. It was a bit more natural at the beginning. As I said, I'm adapting. I can play in the central areas, I can play out wide, and I've just got to do what the gaffer wants of me, and yeah, we've done that today. And what does he want of you? What have been your early impressions of working under Kier in these last few weeks? Yeah, a crazy amount of information, a bit more different to what I had previously, still adapting, but at the end of the day, he just wants me to express myself and go be me, and there's a reason he brought me in, So it's down to me to deliver.
20:58Ross Halls:Does that suit you, that kind of coaching? Lots of information, lots of guidance from the gaffer? Yeah, he seems obsessed and so am I. So, yeah, I feel like it's the perfect match, to be fair. To be honest, yeah, I'm loving every minute. So you want to go to the top. You seem like a very driven character, is that fair to say? Yeah, even today I've scored and assisted, but I still feel like my all-round play could improve. I still feel like I could get another assist. I could be cleaner moments in the final third. I feel like I gave the ball away a couple of times, which I shouldn't have. So I think when you're so process driven, you're only going to keep improving.
21:35Ross Halls:Can you be too hard on yourself at times? I think so. I think so. But I think there's a certain level. And yeah, putting that pressure on myself makes me so driven. So I don't think I'll change. Sorry, I properly ended there. AJ what was that like speaking to Anas for the first time you know you obviously asked him a few questions but we'll be here all day if we played the whole interview because you spoke for a while you know what did you sort of ask him and you know what did you get from it what did I ask him god I can't even remember now off the top of my head yeah you really put me on the spot where we did two player interviews on that day and you'll be able to hear from a bit from Azor Matasiwa tomorrow on the EADT as well so go check that one out when it goes live in the morning um yeah i i really can't remember to be perfectly honest but yeah what were the kind of the vibes i got off him very humble and down to earth he has that kind of war about him like there's this swagger to his play and also to how he is to an extent as a person but it's not like a boastful swagger if that makes sense um it's just being able to talk about what it's been like as well at town fitting into a new system with new manager as he spoke about uh a little bit there i remember asking him about what the response was like as a collective level to the rexham game um how he sees the next kind of few weeks panning out look he's someone that i think has uh not been hiding his ambitions to get out of this league he's not been hiding how he sees Ipswich as a club and where they are and the stature in the league and the ambitions, obviously, to play Premier League next year.
23:19And he has the feelings and the makings of a Premier League football player. He's not a, and I say this as someone who's the same age as him as well, he's also not like a super young player. He's not like Amari or something like that. God, he's younger than I am, which is really depressing. Anis Mometi is a couple of months younger than I am. But yeah, he's going to be someone who's going to want to get to the top level soon. and these performances are showing it. He's got 17 goal contributions in 34 appearances this season. And he's talking about wasted opportunities and he's talking about giving the ball away.
23:53And that is the kind of obsession, it's the term that he uses, of someone that is going to make it into the Premier League. When the bar and the standards are that high, there's a lot to be excited about. Yeah, and he's obviously had a great
24:06Ross Halls:sort of journey, hasn't he? You know, from playing like non-league football and then coming to Wickham, doing well there, earning a move into Bristol City and now he's joined Itchers Town and yeah, he's got ambitions to play Premier League football and hopefully with Itchers Town and yeah, I think he will definitely suit Premier League football. So yeah, I'm sure that's what it will be key for Town for the rest of the season. AJ, let's talk then about the strikers because the two number nines scored the goals to sort of kill the game off. Ivan Azon with another great finish, a very good goal this, I really did like this goal and Ivan is on you know sort of now having a bit of a trademark finish because he's sort of similar to the Wrexham goal and then of course George Hurst came off the bench to yeah just kill the game off to make it 3-0 good to him to get back-to-back goals as well yeah talk us through the striker scoring my friend because yeah people have been like oh we need to play a striker scoring but now they've done it Ivan Ivan not Ivan Ivan Ivan I get it I get it but what's Oh, yeah.
25:09Because he's Spanish Ross. Yeah, I know, but it's easy. Yeah, anyway. Anyway, let's move on. Strikers. This is a really interesting one here. So Ipswich had two strikers that played in this game and Swansea had the championship's top scorer. They left on the bench, by the way, and didn't bring him on until the 55th minute. Zan Vipotnik. I want to touch on him quickly as well because he's had an unbelievable season so far. 16 goals by himself, two assists, only 23 years of age. And there's been a clamour among Ipswich fans, naturally, as there will be, for a player like him and what he can offer and how absolutely clinical and ruthless he is in front of goal when you can get the ball to him.
25:57He doesn't really do that much else apart from shooting the ball into the net. But yeah, and in this game, he had 10 touches. He hit the woodwork in stoppage time, as I mentioned, from a free kick that he powered at goal. And then you look at what Ipswich's strikers are doing. And I know that I'm looking within kind of the microcosm of this game, but even as on knackered, for starters, again, I use that term to describe Jack Clark, but he was tired. He was running around, so he gave absolutely everything. 17 touches is all he ended up with in this game. but he absolutely leapt his socks out, he really was trying his best and gets rewarded with a goal with his 70 minutes on the pitch, it comes just before the interval at a point where...
26:46Ross Halls:Is that in the book? Yeah, we're going with that, I don't know why I didn't want to say ran again, I don't know why I went with leapt, I said run a lot, yeah, leapt his socks we're going to go with it, I like it that's going in the report tomorrow yeah anyway you've really thrown me off now even Azon let's get back to this came at a point in the game where I thought Ipswich's performance was pretty much perfect and the one blot on the copy book was the fact they hadn't had that second goal to really put themselves in control and they do really well with the second goal Mometti holds the ball up he's able to throw in down the left.
27:32He holds the ball up and is able to release Davis. Davis into space. Simple kind of pass into the box. For Azzon, I think he looked up, tried to spot the pass to square it, but there was nothing on for him. Does really, really well and ends up hitting it into the bottom corner from a really tight angle, actually. So credit to him for that one. Keeps his run going because his performances have been really, really good. He's now on four goals for the season. He's got two goals and assists in his last three championship starts. He's had a run of starts. And, yeah, we're starting to see what even Azon is all about.
Read the full transcript
28:10And then the third goal, George Hurst chests the ball in at Watford. Quite an understated finish. And this one's quite similar as well. And it's Mometi's cross from the left. He presses Josh Tymon so hard. I said in the verdict, it was the video verdict we did. He pressed him so hard he almost went back into South Wales, Josh Tymon. Yeah, Mometi wins the ball back down the right, showing again that kind of versatility there. Crosses into the box, and that's where Hurst's able to slot it into the bottom corner. A finish of someone who's building a lot of confidence, I think, and who's very unlucky not to end up with a brace with a well-placed header.
28:49So you're looking at two strikers who played in this one who haven't had the seasons that they were hoping for coming into this game and delivering. Well, the league's top scorer was left on the bench, came on and was able to offer absolutely nothing in this game, apart from that aforementioned late free kick. So I think we can all be pretty pleased with George Hurst and with even Azon. And at the moment, and especially in this Ipswich team, I know who I'd rather have.
29:19Ross Halls:Yes, indeed, because they do work hard, those boys. I know there was one fan behind me who was like, oh, that Azon's rubbish. And then he goes and scores. you're like, oh, actually, you know, he's not too bad, actually, but that's just, that's football for you and that happens. I've done that many times where I've gone, he's bloody rubbish or he's not having a good game and then, oh, I don't know where he does that, which is, yeah, it's just part of football, but no. Leped his socks off. He did indeed. He did indeed. But no, 3-0, job done, three points on the board back at Porton Road. Next talking point, so we've had Anastasia Metty bring an X Factor, striker scoring.
29:56Ross Halls:Now I want to talk about I was about to say Matasiwa and Marcelo Nunes together in the same name. Azor Matasiwa and Darnell Furlong who are on that tightrope AJ and they've still got no bans. They're both close to getting a two match ban but they once again no yellow card for either of them. I know Azor had a little moment where he was like oh god he could have got booked but they're doing so well aren't they to go around that tightrope because I think if they weren't available for Hull I would have been worried. Yeah. I think Mattis was doing very well. I mean, Darnell Furlong's on nine. He's picked up three of those from the Derby game onwards.
30:38Two of them, one against Wrexham and one against Watford. So he's all of a sudden gone from six to nine in the space of less than a month. So that's a bit of a concern, the way that he's picking those up, especially in the away games, where he tries to be very pantomime villainy. Actually, you look at those, and his last four bookings he's had have all come on the road. When you look at his last six, only one has come at home. Actually, if you look at his last seven, only one has come at home. So it's those kind of away games where he's often trying to rattle the home team and the home fans that seems to be where he's getting a lot of bookings and probably also games where he's under more pressure.
31:18Yeah, obviously, Ben Johnson, I would imagine, will be the man who comes in. If that ban does hit, it should be said that he has to get through, as is the case with Matasiwa, as is the case with Anis Mometi, through until the Sheffield Wednesday game on March 14th. So that's four more matches to get through before they can be clear of the 10 booking mark. So Matasiwa, this is fair play. Fair play. Because can you remember the game where Azul Matasiwa last got booked? Oh, must be a while now then.
31:50Ross Halls:as far as back as say November maybe? No, not quite that bad. Not quite that long ago rather. You're looking start of December. Early December. Stoke at home was the last time that Asul Matasiwa was given a yellow card. He has gone 13, count them, 13 league matches without a yellow card having picked up nine in the first half of the season. Yeah, I spoke to him a little bit about that yesterday, not yesterday, on Saturday. So again, you can read a bit more about his kind of thoughts on the yellow cards and avoiding a ban when that bit goes out at 10 o 'clock tomorrow morning. And Anastasia Mometti is another one who's starting to top them up.
32:34I believe he had six off the top of my head before making the move. Yep, six before making the move to town. Two of those have now come as an Ipswich player. Six with Bristol City. So that takes him to eight for the season. two more in the next four games you would hope he could avoid that as an attacker but that would see him hit with a two match ban um yeah that is the current state of play those are the players who are at risk of uh of hitting that definitely of the the three of them probably darnell furlong is going to be the one i'm most concerned about um the one who i'd say is the biggest risk but you would hope that mimetti would be okay given that he's got a little cushion at least
33:16Ross Halls:yeah do you think Azor can do it so is it four more games you say four more games so you're looking at so let's go through them Hull at home Leicester at home over the weekend then the trip to Stoke and then the Sheffield Wednesday game I mean he's done it well so far I know he's had some some tricky moments at times but um the way that he's navigated this if he gets through this I'll say this now and I really hope that um certain someone is not listening to this. I'm sure he isn't. You know what I'm going to say, probably. If he does this, it will be better than any of the times that Sam Morsey has navigated the tightrope.
33:55Off the top of my head, is it more? Has Sam Morsey managed more than... It'll be 17, I think, if he can do it. Has Sam Morsey... I think it will be... Especially for someone as well, I'll say this, who's new into the division. If he can do that, I'm going to say it. I'm going to say it's the best tightrope walking we have seen of an Ipswich Town player trying to avoid a suspension.
34:21Ross Halls:I will admit there's times where Azor, he goes into a tackle and he just gets up and just sort of walks away. He doesn't try to complain. I think he knows he has to sort of work the dark arts a little bit and try not to, because he just wants to, because as I said, he came very close on Saturday where I thought, oh, could he be? But hopefully not. But no, fair play. and I'm sure when that deadline goes, he can then get as many yellow cards as you possibly want. He'll probably get sent off in his first game after that. He'll be the Millwall game at home. He'll flatter into someone and he'll get back.
34:54He'll miss three games. He'll miss three games. Yeah, violent conduct. Straight red.
34:57Ross Halls:Yeah, so it doesn't even matter. That tightrope, whatever. But no, we shall see what happens. Hopefully we're not jinxed it for this game against Batsay Watford. No, it's a whole city. But yeah, that was the third talking point. The fourth talking point, AJ, as I get my notes up, is just the other standout performance from the game. I want to sort of earmark Marcelino Nunes because there's a nice clip the club have put out with a nice angle. Cameron Burgess, unfortunately, is part of that. Sorry, big Cam. He's not had a good time, has he, since he's played against us. Scores his own goals at Liberty, or whatever it's called these days.
35:30Ross Halls:And then gets three goals and gets done with a great skill from Nunes. And Dan Neal as well, who is making his Portman Road debut for Rich Rich, which was very good indeed. And I thought we had a very good first half performance. I'm sure there's two players that stand out for you, but anybody else you want to highlight? Probably the ones. I'll give some credit to O'Shea as well, because seven days earlier, he had an absolute torrid time at Wrexham. And in the space of a week, he looks like a totally different player. He looks like a totally different leader. Yeah, really, really impressed with him and the way that he's dictating play from the back and doing his defensive work.
36:08that Christian Walton's had two clean sheets and obviously a penalty save in that time. But aside from the penalty save, I don't think he's had a great deal to do. And that is also credit. Credit to him, of course, but also credit to it, which is back line for the way that they have protected him. And then let's talk about the two that you mentioned there. Nelly, Dan Neal in midfield. For the, I think, 55 odd minutes that he was on the pitch. How long was that? I'm just going to get it up here. for the, he matched 61, 61 minutes on the pitch. He was incredible for the first 45, probably with Mometti, the standout.
36:45And he was very tired after the break. Knackered, as I've said, about a couple of other players. Already really, really worked hard, leapt his socks off. God, this book's coming in handy. Yeah, I'm really, really impressed with him. he doesn't seem like he's lacking the match fitness in terms of his ability he doesn't look kind of show any rustiness he's so smooth on the ball he plays surprisingly deep actually it almost at times allows Matasiwa to push up a little bit higher in the pitch as well which bodes well I think if Matasiwa does miss any games but his on the ball stuff is so good he's very good into duels and tackles um an excellent all-round midfielder and a brilliant pick-up for Ipswich to have someone who's 24, has won promotion at this level already, an English midfielder.
37:37I really hope they can keep him, because if they can build him up in the way that they have, he'll be a hell of a player. And we're seeing some early, very, very promising signs of that. And Marcelino Nunez, the formula tends to be Marcelino Nunez starts for Ipswich, Ipswich win game. He's been instrumental to the victories that Town have had. he's even on the days he feels a little bit quieter, he's so quietly instrumental in their open play approach his set pieces have been really really good he's kind of that metronome in the middle of the park but he's also, as you mentioned, got those flicks and tricks and skills did leave Canberra just a little bit red faced, I know that poor Cam's got absolutely slated to oblivion after the Swansea game against Town the 4-1 in November and then they kind of the fans fell from a little bit more and I've seen a lot more criticism heading this way after this this game as you say not been easy for him but yeah Marcelino Nunez what a player how the hell do you fit all these guys into one team it's so difficult isn't it
38:49Ross Halls:yeah and we definitely missed him when he was out injured and it's incredible those options I'm sure clubs when they come and play town and they see some players on the bench, they're like, Jack Clark, he's our top goalscorer, he's on the play bench. I know he's getting rested because he's knackered. Jadon Villagin isn't even on there. Yeah, that is mad as well. I remember people saying to me, why is Jadon Villagin not around? I was like, oh, he's injured. I was like, oh, yeah, he's a big miss. But no, we've got Jack Clark, we've got Mehmeti now, we've got Nunes. So you lose one player, you've got a good backup.
39:24Ross Halls:So, yeah, Nunes is... I think A1 just loves him because it's just how he was. I don't know how you find Ipswich's strongest team at the moment. Let's say when everyone's fit. What on earth do you do? And I guess there is kind of a balance to say as well, the right side is weaker. We kind of have to be honest about that. I love you, Wes Burns. You are a fantastic player. But it's also probably still a little bit of a concern that he is Ipswich's best right-sided option at the moment where Sindra, we've seen more from him. Casey McIntyre, we're seeing more as well. But you've got probably a little bit of an imbalance where the left side is just ridiculous.
40:03Unbelievable, the levels of quality. And I think that that probably makes it feel a bit odd in a way. And you can't put, I wouldn't put Mimetti as a natural right winger. You can't have Filadine there really or Jack Clark there. And then trying to find the balance is very difficult because Nunez, for me, kind of has to start. But if he starts, does he play in the 10? If he does, then you've got to choose between Mimetti and Clark and Filagin on the left. If you don't, you can move Nunez into a deeper role, but then you're taking Dan Neal out of the team. You don't really want to do that. And Nunez has had his best moments in the 10, but you can do that if you need to.
40:44So let's say you start Nunez in the 10, then you have Neal behind him, then you've got to think about which one of the three incredible left-sided attackers you want to start the game. I don't know what the best option is. Is it Jadon Filagene? Is it Jack Clark? Is it Mimetti? Because he feels like he fits the team better. I don't know. I have a headache thinking about it. God help Kieran McKenna when Jadon Filagene comes back. I know you want your starters and your finishers and all of that, but they all want to settle on the strongest team. And I don't know what that's going to be. it's going to be very, very tricky.
41:19Ross Halls:Yeah, my head is now frazzled from just what you just said there because, yeah, it's just so much options. And, yeah, McKenna, I'm sure he loves that. He probably loves having those options. I'm sure he spends a lot of time deciding on different things. I'm sure there is games, and you said that before, where certain players to certain opponents where he'll do better against them and stuff like that. But, yeah, when Filagini's back fit, if he is back, hopefully he will be. You know, if he's been out longer than we're expecting, but yeah when he's really fully up the speed and for that running having those three players on the left as options is going to be incredible so and yeah obviously will help like Nunez has had injuries this season as well so you know we've got to watch him as well so it's great and it's lovely to see and that is sort of segwaying on to our fifth talking point AJ and that is just home comforts we've got two more games back at Portland Road whole Tuesday night and then Leicester City on Saturday and it just always just feels just different doesn't it at home I think that's like most teams at home that's where your form is most of the time but I just feel like Porton Road is becoming a bit of a place where you can just really enjoy our football we can watch good football again I know there was a period last year in the Premier League I hated going home so we just thought oh no here we go we're going to lose again and then we went away from home it's just I know I felt like the team had more freedom when they went away from home because maybe less pressure but this time around home form has been key yeah it has i think that ibswich feel that they can be more dominant when they're at home that's how they want to be they want to be a bit like a championship man city they want to hold the ball they want to create chances that start from the back they want to play through opponents and there is a realization that despite the fact they've got this super strong squad it's very difficult to do that away from home no matter what level you're you're playing at it just isn't the same and they haven't quite cracked it in in the same way i don't think there's still chances for that to happen there are still games where we've seen them be excellent away from home but doing that on a consistent basis has been much harder is there a psychological block i think that when maybe you have these defeats that start to happen away from a home then you're it naturally becomes trickier other teams will look at how sides that have beaten it switch on their own patch have done it and will copy them you look at um maybe some similarities with the defeats to sheffield united as there would be to leicester as they would be to oxford uh even the frustrating ones are like bristol city where they drew on one or the preston defeat things like that um it's just a very different position for it switch to be in as well and the closest parallels we can draw from this the last championship season.
44:06But Ipswich were an unknown back then. They were an underdog back then, and it's very different now where the expectation is for them to be dominant home and away and also to churn out win after win after win, whereas it was easier probably to do that in the championship, but they didn't have that. So that all is kind of exacerbated by being at home where those expectations are there and they feel like they can deliver. It has been harder for them away from home. But yeah, Portman Road is very much home comforts. These players love playing there and you don't even have to ask them about it for them to mention about things like the support, the pitch, everything about playing at Portman Road.
44:49And there's a fear factor, I'd say, isn't there? Where there's only one team who's won at Portman Road this season. That is Charlton Athletic in that 3-0 game that I think we can hopefully put down as a bit of a freak result. Other than that, teams just don't seem to be able to come here and win matches, even at times where they felt like they might have done, like Preston, like Derby. Ipswich have been able to claw something from it deep in stoppage time to ensure that they've been able to protect that record.
45:19Ross Halls:Definitely. And, yeah, using one of your, in front of the book, a bad day at the office that was against Charlton. I'm sure we've got that in there. Yeah. Bad day at the office. But yeah, two games now, back at Portland Road, as I mentioned, looking forward to it. Hull City are up next, AJ, and this is a big game because it will be all eyes on this one because we're only a championship game on Tuesday night. And yeah, we beat them early in the season 2-0 at the KCOM, and that first half was rubbish. But thank you, Towne, got the two goals in the second half. Nunes with his goal and, of course, two back, POM.
45:55Ross Halls:And they're up there, aren't they, AJ? They're really doing well this year. my whole city what's your thoughts on them as a whole as a team because I've got a solid team manager that he's bloody massive remember he's huge he's bloody yeah we were both next to him in that bit outside the press conference room yeah big old boy first thing to say we're back at Portman Road which is really good do you know what that is that's a tough place to go there it is the crowd being right on top of you a small pitch, not in this case. Dressing rooms, not quite what the visitors are used to. Probably also not the case.
46:33But still, Portman Road is a tough place to go. But if there's one team in the Championship that might think they could bloody the noses of Ipswich Town at Portman Road, it is Hull City. And I'll tell you why that is. It is because as things stand, and there is a game tonight, which we'll touch on a little bit later, but going into tonight, Hull City have the best away record in the Championship, which is nuts. Do you know when their last defeat was? You don't, and I'm not going to ask you. Their last away defeat.
47:01Ross Halls:Let me try to guess it. So is it this season? It's this season. I'll take if you can get a right kind of ballpark time as to when it might have been. Must have been. Maybe before the first international break, so maybe like start of September. Okay, we're over-egging it a little bit. Okay, my best. It's not been quite as extreme as that. The last time that Hull City lost away from home was the week before they hosted Ipswich in that reverse fixture at the MKM Stadium. Sorry, it's a long old time. I called it KCOM just a minute ago. Yeah, everyone calls it KCOM. It's fine. Yeah, but that's how long it's been.
47:40That game feels like an eternity ago. I remember where we recorded our pod after that. If you told me that was two years ago, I would have probably believed you. So, yeah, they are in good nick. They have good players. They have Oli McBurney, who I definitely touted as an Ipswich potential transfer target. People laughed at me. Why would Oli McBurney be a signing for Ipswich Town? Well, because he's got 13 goals and six assists for Hull this season as they push for a top two finish because they are still fifth in the table. They're only three points off second place Middlesbrough. You look at players like Joe Gelhart, who scored 11 goals in that number 10 role.
48:16You look at Carl Joseph, who's not done a great deal in his career so far, but already has the second most goals he's scored in any single season in his career. Seven goals, three assists. They've got this really strong base of Egan and Hughes, the kind of experience in the youngster, Slater in midfield. We're going to get you to pronounce the other part that Slater plays on. Should we have a go? Should we go? Come on, let's do it. So the team, basically, the two midfielders who play for Hull, Regan Slater, who's on the left, and there's another player who we expect to be on the right side of midfield.
48:52I believe he's on loan from Besiktas this year. He is a 28-year-old Bosnian midfielder. And Ross here has... I've forwarded on a pronunciation guide for how to pronounce his name, and Ross is about to give it a go. Come on, Ross.
49:08Ross Halls:The annoying thing is he's born in Denmark, so why can't his parents, I know they're probably Bosnian, but couldn't they just like call him I don't know, Christian you know yeah, or Anderson or just something easy but no, they've gone Emir that bit and then Hadchi Hametovic you know what, that wasn't terrible can you put it all together into like a faster Emir Hadchi Hametovic blah blah blah blah blah blah um amir had such a bit mewitch no flip that is do you want one more go no you say no amir hadzi ometovic you got it when you slowed it down but what you do ross is you say the first bit's fine overthink it then you you get too confident you overthink it and then it all goes horribly wrong but it's it's not a bad effort no we might work well it's all right it's all right We're going to try it again on the boot room.
50:09Ross Halls:Yeah, there's some people who are like, they probably enjoy me saying it wrong. I know there's a few people out there listening and go, oh, bloody hell, Ross doing this thing again. Oh, bloody hell. I've had enough of this. I don't think it's on progress, but I'm trying. But at least I can say Molecular a little bit better now, so that's good. Yeah. But we will try this again on the boot room for subscribers. If you pay for any ADT subscription, go check out our latest offer,£5 for five months. you will, I'm confident, not promising though, you will hear Ross pronounce his name. Yes. Amir Hachalemir.
50:46Ross Halls:No, let's move on. He's got to nail it. I've got it. Well, AJ, let's talk though about predictions. We're going to leave the predicted line-up for the boot room. There will be a few changes because it's a turnaround Saturday, Tuesday. I'm sure Kim McKenna will like to refresh the squad with Jack Clark. Could start potentially. Mehmeti playing the 10. But I won't get into that. I want to get predictions because I'm worried. Hefe got a bang. Well done, Hefe, in Portugal. You got a 3-0 prediction, so he got all the points. So you've got to be worried, AJ. You're third now. Am I? Oh, God. Double check the leaderboard because maybe Hefe's gone top because of that win.
51:30Ross Halls:Let me have a little look-see. I actually haven't fought my prediction yet, but who goes first do we do rock paper scissors live on the let's do it if you want rock paper scissors go oh but there was a delay there for some reason no it's fine it's fine you go okay by the way if you're watching if you're listening on audio AJ went scissors I went rock so there we go so I do go first but I'm quickly just going to calculate the scores because Hefe has gone joint top with Stu. Disgrace. So there we go. I'm looking for games gone in the book. I know it's in it somewhere. But yeah, I'm now, I'm so far away.
52:18Ross Halls:I'm like, it's getting scary now. I'm like 12 points away from Stu and Hefe. I'm now, how many points? I'm nine points away from you. I need, I need a good prediction. I'm hoping to get another win. I am going to back Town for another win but I think it's going to be tight I want to go 1-0 1-0 and I want to back Jack Clark but he was on the bench last time but then I want to back Mometi but will he like surely he's got to start he's got to start isn't he he had unbelievable games he's starting for me he's starting and he's scoring the first goal so 1-0 Mometi my first goal scorer that is me done and dusted hopefully that is correct and I can claw back some points because I need some points.
53:07Ross Halls:AJ, what do you reckon? The game is gone. The game has gone. What's the description in it? I'll put it away now. We'll do it another time. Anyway, what is my prediction? I have this kind of feeling that Hull are very open and attacking and actually when you boil it down, they're not actually quite as open and attacking as they have been, especially recently. You look at the Derby game, they scored four goals from, I'm sorry, Ross, but from 0.58 xG, whereas Derby scored two goals from 3.38, which feels like an anomaly. Then you look at the weekend, Hull had two shots in the game. One was in the first minute, and the other one was the goal that Crooks scored from a terrible, pompy mistake to make it 1-0.
53:56Those are the only two shots they had. They conceded 22 shots, and Hull won the game 1-0. 22 shots to 2 so I don't think Hull are going to come to Portman Road and create loads but they're clinical they really are clinical in front of goal and they're a solid defensive team and they are going to set up with that and the fact they are a very strong away team so I am going to say this is going to end level I'm going to go with a 1-1 draw my first goal scorer pick is going to be George Hurst 3-3 for the Scottish international who is not very Scottish
54:32Ross Halls:no and ever since he's become Scottish he's not been that great but he's been fine he's been fine he's been out of he's been out of form but now he's in form he's got two goals and he's heading to the World Cup yes which yes it's going to be fun yeah but yeah so a draw and a win as we predict we'll get to doing Hefe's prediction very shortly I'm sure Hefe's very smug at the moment he's got that bang on although he hasn't mentioned to us normally I know he's off at the moment, but I thought he would have just gone a little cheeky text in our group chat and saying, well, that was a nice win, a nice bonus point for me.
55:12Ross Halls:He's slamming too many Superbox down at the moment, I believe. And eating Portuguese cakes and stuff, which is nice. I think he actually saw, I saw he was baking some. So, yeah, let us know, I'm sure. There'll be stories from the Portugal trip, I'm sure. but um aj let's wrap it up as we're getting close to that perfect hour any other business from you i've got one thing i want to give a shout out to because um i went to the greyhound pub today um for a quick lunch treat and i had a nice burger there and um that i reckon i know the greyhound is a big itchristown pub i know a lot of the kawai army go there um and also a big town fan runs it And, yeah, that nice lovely burger there.
55:59Ross Halls:So shout out to the Greyhound. Lovely, lovely burger. Lovely sunny day in Suffolk. So that was a perfect sort of lunchtime treat for me going there. So, yeah, any other business for you, my friend? Yeah, we'll do a couple of bits. I don't have any restaurants to mention, though, but I will mention briefly the Ipswich Witches, I think would be a good one to mention. So they kick off their campaign at the end of this month. There was obviously a lot of doubt over what was going to happen with them because chris lewis has been their their long-term owner uh stepped away and ended up selling the club but they've had their takeover over the weekend mayfield the company the silverson based company have made that purchase and they've announced their team today as well so all things happening uh over there um and they've now brought back as well as part of it the seven-time british champion scott nichols has been announced in their team he's 47 he's coming back for one last ride one last dance to see if they can retain their Speedway title.
56:58It is going to be difficult, of course. I know nothing of Speedway. I've had to learn everything about writing stuff up this morning for it. And you know what? I'm vibing with it. I love it. I'm really enjoying it.
57:10Ross Halls:Honestly, mate, I think you'll like it. I've gone to a few Speedway meetings with one of our old colleagues, Mike Bacon, who's a big Speedway fan. And I remember when he took me to my first ever one, I loved it. I was like in the centre green capturing things and it's just mental because there's no brakes on these bikes and it's just I feel sorry for the first time I went Danny King who's I don't know is he still riding for Witchers? Is that a name that came up? Is he part of the team? I don't think so. He broke his arm in my first ever meeting there. He is. He's the skipper. He is the captain of the team.
57:46Ross Halls:He's still the skipper. Lovely guy. Sorry, Danny. Yeah, he is still there. I just felt so bad my first ever time I was there I met him in the pits when he was doing his bike up and I was like, I hope you have a good race, mate. And then he goes and crashes and I'm like, oh no. That's your fault. Yeah, it's pretty much my fault. But no, yeah, big up to the Itchwitch Witches because you've got to support local Itchwitch, just sport in general. We need to go. Yes, we do. We should all go together. Why not? Also want to give a shout out to the Under 21s because they got a big win on Friday night against Arsenal.
58:22Ross Halls:They've beaten 1-0 to the Mandel, scoring another great goal. They've had a really good season. Love to see that. They actually had a doubleheader on Saturday. I went to the under-18s in the morning at Playford Road on the showcase pitch. I saw the building work going on at the training ground, which you see on a regular AJ when you go to press conferences. But yeah, it was good to see. They lost 2-1 against Spurs, but they battled really hard. And it was just nice to sort of see some good football there. And I went to Portland Road and, of course, the boys, the men, got the win. So yeah, you had one other thing, I think.
58:55Ross Halls:So you had Itch Witches. What else? Anyone coming to the game tomorrow, A14 is going to get absolutely obliterated after the game. So be careful. Will I make it back in time for Friday's press conference? Who knows? I'm definitely not dramatic at all. But yeah, I've been reading on the ADT today about like 53 miles of closures, multiple exits, things like that, junctions getting totally dug up. so really excited for my drive back tomorrow Ipswich Town please please win because it will ruin my Tuesday night on top of what is going to be probably not the most enjoyable journey but give me something to relish and enjoy and cheer me up as I drive back for what will probably be about four days yeah well good traffic updates that's what we do that's what we provide we bring you everything on this podcast and thank you though for listening as standard big shout out to our sponsor Molecular who will give you some great stuff for your car.

Ross Halls is joined by Alex Jones to reflect on Ipswich Town’s 3-0 win at home to Swansea City.
The boys talk through the game as Rossco highlights five key points, including Anis Mehmeti’s stellar display, strikers scoring goals and two players close to a suspension.
Then it’s on to the big match against Hull City, with the Blues looking to cut the gap on the teams above them, facing one of the best away sides in the division at Portman Road.
There’s also plenty of shenanigans, including AJ’s football vocabulary book, Ross’ pronunciation nightmare and a little bit of traffic advice.
