In short

Ipswich Town’s 1-0 win over Hull City at Portman Road, ending a run of defensive solidity with a third straight clean sheet. The episode focuses on how Ipswich weathered Hull’s deep, counter-attacking approach, managed a tense finish, and broke through via a late substitute-driven goal.

Guests

Ross (host) and Stuart Watson (Ipswich-focused analyst). Kieran McKenna is featured via audio clips (Ipswich manager).

Guest backgrounds

Stuart Watson is a long-time Ipswich Town commentator/coverer. Ross is an Ipswich fan-host who discusses match details and live-blog moments.

Key claims

Hull “came for a draw” and sat deep; Ipswich’s first half lacked rhythm due to stop-start refereeing and unforced errors. The win was pivotal for closing the gap to second. Ipswich improved after substitutions and showed composure lessons for late-game management.

Notable examples

Azor Matasiwa’s first English goal—set up by Anis Mometi and Leaf Davis—described as a “rocket/pile-driver.” Jacob Greaves booed at left-back; Liam Miller threatened after coming on. Kieran McKenna praises Matasiwa’s leadership and professionalism.

0:14Ross Halls:This podcast features Stuart Watson and Kieran McKenna.

0:30Ross Halls:Three clean sheets in a row and Azor Matasiwa because what a strike from our Dutch maestro, dynamic midfielder, battling midfielder. Many, many names Azor Matasiwa has got, but what a man. And I'm joined by another great man in Stuart Watson, my friend. Great to be joined by you as ever. How are you? And are you still buzzing from a big three points for town last night?

0:58Stuart Watson:Very well, thank you, Ross. Yeah, that game could have turned out very differently. And the tone of this chat today could have been oh so different. But thankfully, not quite come of the hour. Was it 71st minute? But come of the man. He hasn't scored many in his career. And I don't think he'll score many more going forwards. But what a strike. What a way to open his Blues account.

1:23Ross Halls:Oh, yes. And we've sort of been waiting for that moment for us all. Because he's been fantastic, hasn't he? He's been consistent. 8 out of 10 pretty much every week. Just that, we've been waiting for that goal. And I think AJ mentioned it last night. There's been some players that have been needing goals as of late. You know, George Hurst recently. Who else scored recently? There's another player who scored.

1:44Stuart Watson:Azon's got a couple, hasn't he?

1:46Ross Halls:Azon. There's another player. Now, my mind's just gone blank.

1:51Stuart Watson:Who else scored? Mehmeti got his first Portman Road goal.

1:55Ross Halls:There's somebody else, too. And Sindra, of course, at Watford as well, who needed a goal. But yeah, Azor, I'm just quickly having a look in terms of his career. He's only scored three goals. One at Rennes, one at Rems, and then, yeah, he's got two at Rems and then one at Rennes, who he signed from, who still can't, it blows my mind having two French clubs, sort of similar names. But yeah, we're going to discuss all things Towns do. And yeah, just your opening thoughts, really, before we get into McKenna Audio, Matasi were loving because yeah Hull, promotion rivals it wasn't a great game at the KCOM or MKM Stadium but now it's done the double over them this year but yeah third successive win and what a difference it's made, you know, a week makes you know, to think a massive reaction after two really bad days at Wrexham and now they've beaten Watford, Swansea and now whole city at Porton Road.

2:58Stuart Watson:Yeah, less than a fortnight on, wasn't it, since we were picking the bones out of that 5-3 collapse at the race course coming hot on the heels of a pretty limp FA Cup exit. And now here we are, three wins, three clean sheets. Gap to second closed. Quite a healthy margin to seventh as well. Yeah, it's been a season of kind of emotional twists and turns, but we're certainly riding a bit of a crest of a wave at the moment.

3:34Ross Halls:Yeah, I just remember the backlash after the 5-3 defeat, and it was just all doom and gloom, and we were like, I've got a long travel home from North Wales, and it was just two really bad games. And now it's just flipped, hasn't it? Completely flipped because of just three really good results, and the defence as well. We'll get on to standout players and stuff, But that's another big, you know, sort of reaction in terms of three clean sheets in a row from a team conceding five in one game to, you know, not conceding a single goal in the last three. Yeah.

4:04Stuart Watson:Where do you want to start with it, Ross?

4:07Ross Halls:Shall we hear from Kieran McKenna, first of all, because we've got some good clips from him discussing Azor Mataseba, of course. But you asked him as a general thing, his thoughts on the game. And as he normally does, he goes very deep and in depth. and we've got a nice clip here of him discussing the win as a whole to sort of kick us off. So over to you, Kieran McKeown.

4:27Kieran McKenna:Yeah, it was a tough game, frustrating game. I think I had a fair idea the type of game it would be. It was so, so different to Saturday, of course. There's bits that we can play our part in that, but reality is a team come with good players, good legs, experienced defenders and sit with 11 so deep and take their time on every time the ball goes out of play. Very rarely going to be a fantastic game of football. So, yeah, we didn't create the pressure that we would have wanted in the first half, really. Create enough clear-cut chances, probably one clear chance, but didn't create as much as what we would like.

5:08Kieran McKenna:Had lots of set plays and built some pressure, but nothing quite fell. Really important to not concede. and they had a threat, they had a counter threat and we defended some of those well. Some of the recoveries were really good. You know with Hull you can't give them something to hang on to. They've done it so many times this year if you give them something to hang on to. So keeping the clean sheet was a positive. I thought second half was better and we started to pick through them a little bit quicker and cleaner and build the pressure right up to the point of the goal really. And yeah, of course, a great strike but I think the goal probably came at the point when the pressure was building.

5:48Kieran McKenna:And then, yeah, honestly, we didn't see the game out fantastically well. Good effort, but not as much composure as what we're going to need. But again, that's a lesson and something for the group and for everyone to go through. So, yeah, not perfect by any means, but, yeah, honestly, a great way to win it with a big moment like that because you have to win games in some games like that over the course of the season. and it is this age of the season where games can be a little bit more tense and especially when you face that type of game against a team who come to your home and really, really, really just try and stop you.

6:25Kieran McKenna:It's always going to be a little bit tense and we're just happy to come out on the right side of it.

6:30Ross Halls:I'm not being controversial here, Stu, but Hull City, they definitely came for a draw, in my opinion. I think their manager, Hull, they set him up and put McBurney on the bench as well. When I saw that, I was like, I'll rub my hands together. I was like, happy days. He's not playing from the start anyway. But yeah, there's five changes, Stu, from Kieran Kenner's side from the Swansea win, which, you know, I was a bit like, oh, I know there's games coming thick and fast and there's been some torres and games, but that momentum, I just thought, could have been lost on another day. You know, it could have been an issue for us.

7:04Ross Halls:But your thoughts on the five changes as a whole?

7:08Stuart Watson:Yeah, there's no doubting that would have been the narrative had Ipswich not won this game afterwards would have been the team selection off the back of Ipswich's best 45 minutes of the season first half against Swansea we were talking about how the chemistry was so good the balance of the team was so good Man of the Match, Mometi, drops out Jacob Greaves replaces Leif Davis at left back after Leafs had one of his most effective games of the season. Yeah, half of the outfield 10 changed. Pros and cons, as always, you can talk about that. You lose, as you say, a bit of momentum, but we're right slap bang in the middle of a really hectic period.

7:53Stuart Watson:And there's no doubting that a huge physical output went into the previous games. A lot of travel, Watford, Swansea. I don't know if that was the main factor in Ipswich's frustrations in this game. I think the overriding issue was what you've touched upon, is how Hull came to set up. Swansea, perhaps naively, came to Portman Road and tried to play. We hear so much about Vito Matos, their Portuguese manager, who's come in midway through the season, is trying to reinstate the Swansea way, inverted commas, and how they really want to dominate the ball and press. And that just played into Ipswich's hands and they carved through them.

8:39Stuart Watson:The whole manager, far more pragmatic. We heard Kieran McKenna say pre-match about how they've won games in different ways. They've won some open high-scoring matches, but they've also been very pragmatic at times as well. He's a manager who's not been afraid to change his formation. And he did that here. He switched from a back four to really what was a back five. I mean, you could call it three, four, three if you were being kind. That was what they would switch to on the break, but really out of possession. And for the bulk of this game, it was a back five, four in front of them, one up top.

9:18Stuart Watson:They came to sit deep, to frustrate, to run the clock down. That started as early as I think sort of the 21st minute. looking back at my notes with the goalkeeper taking an age over goal kicks and things like that. And, you know, you have to say, I'm not being sniffy about it, you have to say for a large portion of the game, it kind of worked, didn't it?

9:40Ross Halls:Yeah, it did. That first half was very frustrating. And I was actually, I think you mentioned it as well, Stu, that the referee was very whistle-happy. Whistle-happy, yeah. Yeah, he just, I don't know, just never let the game flow. I felt he did really well in the reverse fixture because he was in charge, which is... I don't know if that's happened that often, where the same referee has done both games. And I thought he did okay in that one. I thought he was, you know, just solid. But this one, he was just, yeah, I don't know, just stopping everything.

10:10Stuart Watson:Is it Anthony Backhouse? That's who I've got on my... No, Lewis Smith, I think. I'm looking at the wrong team sheet, that's why. Swansea. Lewis Smith, thank you. He was, yeah, I mean, he set the tone within the first sort of minute or so, didn't he, by giving two or three really sort of soft fouls. I remember Hurst ran the right-hand channel and it was just a bit of a shoulder-to-shoulder and the whole man sort of threw himself to the floor, needed to be stronger, but foul was given and you thought, okay, right, that's where the bar has been set very low for fouls. And that played into Hull's hands of making it a very stop-start game.

10:44Stuart Watson:If you allow Upswich to get into any kind of rhythm, you're in trouble. And I think opposition managers are wising up to that. and they're trying to come up with ways to make it niggly stop-start matches. And that's been a problem for Upswich at times this season at Portman Road. So to, as Kieran McKenna said there, to come out on the right side of one of those and to get one over the line feels like quite an important moment in the season.

11:15Ross Halls:Indeed. And this is a bit of a random question. I'm going to be asking an opposition sort of point of view. And it's very strange that the last two games, both teams have put their top goals through on the bench. You know, Swansea, Vipovnik, he was on the bench for Swansea, of course, came off. And Ollie McBurney was on the bench for Hull City, of course, he came on at half-time. But I'm just complex. Like, why would you do that? Is that because they're coming away from home against Istria Town, who are very good at home? and do they feel like, oh, maybe they don't want to, I won't say risk him, but they feel like, oh, you know, maybe they don't need him for that moment.

11:55Ross Halls:But I don't know, I'm always a bit like, surely you're playing one of the, you know, really good team. You want to put your best, you know, team together.

12:03Stuart Watson:Yeah, I think speaking to counterparts who cover both Swansea and Hull, there was a feeling, you know, the first question when those teams would come out, why aren't those two starting? You know, why is Vipotnik on the bench? Why is McBurney on the bench? Vipotnik 16 goal championship top goal scorer McBurney I think had 13 and quite a sizable number of assists going into those games and both actually made a bit of a difference when they came off the bench Vipotnik crashed the free kick against the crossbar didn't he in stoppage time at the weekend and McBurney was a real handful in those sort of nervy last moments last night but the explanation from those that kind of watch those clubs week in, week out, is that both had started to look a little bit leggy in their form of dits and they were probably due a bit of a rest.

12:55Stuart Watson:Maybe with the games coming thick and fast, managers prioritise certain games that they might see as more winnable outside of Ipswich and more important. Hull have got Millwall on Saturday and then Wrexham next Tuesday. So maybe a little bit of thinking of the bigger picture there with the games that they've got coming up. So we talked about Ipswich making five changes, Hull made four of their own. It's not uncommon. Thankfully, it didn't come back to buy Ipswich last night.

13:27Ross Halls:Yeah, and to be fair, that's a good point. When you see that, when you see the opposition, they're one of their best players on the bench, a lot of happy days. But I just thought, I'm just sort of like, yeah, but yeah, it's a big thing. They're probably snackered. They need to be rested. But thankfully for us, they were rested because I know McBurney was one of those, oh, could he bite us in the butt? We were linked with him and some town fans think, oh, I don't want him. But he's done very well at Hull City and didn't have to worry about him until the second half. But any talking points for you during that first half?

13:55Ross Halls:Because just like the away fixture, that was rubbish. And there wasn't really much to really talk about for that first half, was there?

14:03Stuart Watson:No, not a lot. I've mentioned the referees part in that. I've mentioned Hull's part in that in being solid, compact, deep, organised. And I say that with the utmost respect. There's different ways to get results from games and they did that side of things well. And Ipswich have to own their part of it as well. There was a lot of unforced errors, a lot of misplaced passes, cross-field switches that went out of play, chips over the top that drifted out for goal kicks. just no kind of flow or rhythm to that first half at all. That said, Ipswich still had the best two chances of that half. One nice little bit of intricate play around the edge of the box.

14:45Stuart Watson:Jack Taylor did the hard part, sort of turning on the ball and then kind of dragged his shot wide. And then the bigger one is George Hurst, wasn't it? After Ipswich had sort of pressed high, won the ball back up in the top left area. I can't remember who put the cross in but George Hurst on the corner of the six yard box near post took it first time and the goalkeeper was equal to it but that was the story of the first half bit of a nothingy 45 minutes

15:19Ross Halls:My main takeaway from that first half was Jacob Greaves getting booed every time he got the ball for Hull which I was a bit surprised about because it's a boyhood club you know, came through their academy, played so many games for them, got them back to the Championship, you know, part of that League One promotion winning team. But yeah, every time he got the Bulls to, he just got booed, which I was a bit like, oh, it's a bit sad.

15:42Stuart Watson:Yeah, and it wasn't a smattering of boos either, was it? It was, you know, significant from that away end. Took me by surprise as well, to be honest, because he's, you know, he's a proper whole boy. His dad played for the club as well was that right and you know he speaks with such fondness about you know his home his home club his home city I think whenever a player leaves to kind of step up to the Premier League as much as you're disappointed there's always an acceptance that someone's trying to further their career and he stayed there you know a long time and played a lot of games Alex I think put something on Twitter last night to sort of say he was surprised by that reaction and I think there was some responses from Hull fans pointing out his role in the reverse fixture.

16:32Stuart Watson:I can't remember a massive amount about it, but I think it was a bit of a scrappy game and Breeze was at the heart of that and they were unhappy that he maybe gave a few fouls away and stuff like that. I'm surprised by that response, to be honest, but there you go.

16:52Ross Halls:Also, there was apparently a drone as well. I didn't know this until after the game, which was a bit of a stoppage in play. I remember just sitting next to another photographer and we were just chatting, like, what's going on? And that's not really good for us as snappers. We should be knowing what's going on and taking pictures of these drones, but we didn't know until after the game. We went, oh, did you hear about that? Which, you know, they got it sorted in the end, but that was not good, was it?

17:13Stuart Watson:No, it was a bit of an added to the stoppages, didn't it? Like, yeah, I wasn't really sure what had happened at the time. The referee stopped and he came over to speak to the dugouts. He kind of pointed up at one stage and Alex said to me, I said, I'm not confident enough to say, but it might be it might have been a drone or something, the way he was pointing to the sky. And then, you know, we got it confirmed later on that that was the case. And I believe the police are kind of looking into that. There's obviously laws and regulations about where you can fly drones and safety measures and all that sort of stuff.

17:47Stuart Watson:But that got sorted fairly quickly, didn't it?

17:49Ross Halls:Yes, it did indeed. And then the second half ends, Stu. Olly McBurner comes on for whole city. He rustles a bit of feathers. But for me, and I think you've said, and a lot of people have said it as well, the atmosphere felt very different. Swansea was a bit, I don't know, felt a bit flat, even though we won 3-0, it just felt a bit flat. But this one, under the light, it's always special. You know, the cliches, all that. The flames are back and it's, you know, it's a nice, mild night. But especially when we made those changes, the fans were really you know, back in the team trying to push them over a line which they did in the end but yeah, Blue Army did well tonight Yeah

Read the full transcript

18:33Stuart Watson:They were brilliant the fans and I think they had actually a pretty significant role in getting this victory over the line the 12th man cliche as you say I don't think they've been great all season the crowd as a collective at times I think they've been you know expectations have obviously risen massively this season and in the early stages of the season where a new team was sort of still gelling and it could get a little bit edgy at times. Kieran McKenna has kind of gently alluded to that on a few occasions, but last night was Ipswich fans at their best because they recognised that that was a difficult game.

19:15Stuart Watson:It was a frustrating game. and that, you know, we always have this debate about whose duty is it to lift who? Is it the team to kind of lift the crowd or vice versa? And the crowd took it upon themselves to encourage and there was a sort of a long rhythmic rendition of Blue Army that sort of grew and grew in the second half, which always takes me back to Barnsley away in League One, gets the hairs on the back of the neck standing up. but just really encouraging. And I think the players sense that the crowd were right behind them and trying to help them in that game. Obviously, bringing on Wes Burns and Leif Davis, two of the kind of longer-serving fans' favourites, kind of helped as well.

20:01Stuart Watson:Mameti as well, that people have really bonded with. And for all the frustration of that first hour, I thought the crowd and the subs helped tips, which just start to get on top in that game. Jack Clark sort of won a series of fouls in very quick succession running at people. And it just felt like Ipswich were getting on top leading up to that goal finally arriving.

20:25Ross Halls:Yeah. But before we get into the subs changing things, I've just gone through your live blog. It's very good, as always, my friend. And I want to sort of highlight a moment in the 55th minute where Dara O'Shea picks up the ball, controls it, and he runs. I don't know if you've seen that clip from, I think it's League Two, what team it is now, where the defender, yeah, and he just ran and scored. And I thought that was going to be the moment that Dara was going to go all the way. Unfortunately, it was too, you know, it was comfortable for the whole keeper. But that was a great moment. As a defender yourself, Stu, I'm sure you were enjoying that.

21:04Stuart Watson:yeah just took it down on his was it on his thigh on the halfway line and hole was so deep he just started striding forward and thought i'm going to keep going here and i'm going to keep going and it just opened up and then um yeah i think he got a bit of a nosebleed at that point and hit a bit of a bit of a tamish shot from 25 yards at the goalkeeper the one you mentioned the cardiff one I tweeted this the other day. I'm convinced, on first viewing, I was convinced it was Liam DeLapp. It's a blue kit with the sort of small white pinstripes, which was very similar to the Ipswich kit last season.

21:41Stuart Watson:He's got the exact same gait and running style as Liam DeLapp. He's kind of broad shoulders, rolled down socks, tippy-toed running style, marauding run all the way through the middle. And then his celebration is just exactly the same as Liam's, the little jump and fist pump to the side. If you haven't seen that goal, I can't remember the guy's name, but you'll see it. Cardiff's centre-half runs from his own half to score. Have a look at that and tell me that that is not a dead ringer for Liam DeLatte.

22:20Ross Halls:yeah yeah just incredible i just love seeing those clips and just yeah for him to go all the way and score and i thought that was gonna be a moment that came to mind straight away when i saw dar on the ball and going through like come on dar go and he just yeah he said got maybe a bit

22:33Stuart Watson:of a nosebleed and uh his tightest bramble moment that would have been yes yeah oh that was yeah

22:38Ross Halls:the sunlone goal which is incredible um but yeah that sort of felt like the game was alive then at that moment um and then the subs you know burns and davis come on a quick one though on jake Greaves, thoughts on his display and left-back again? Because he's had a mixed time at left-back this season. Some good games. Coventry, obviously. Sheffield United, not so much. Watford did okay, didn't he? This one, what do you reckon?

23:07Stuart Watson:Sometimes good, sometimes not so good, as you say. I think you've probably just listed the four games that he started at left-back. Coventry away, excellent. Sheffield United away, didn't work. Look, Watford away, excellent. This one, meh. Ipswich certainly looked more effective when Leif Davies came on at left back in the second half. I guess the logic will have been that the extra aerial strength that Jacob Greaves could bring could make the difference. And look, it was a bit of a set-piece game. It was a scruffy, fine margins game. And that's what Kieran McKenna was expecting. and Jacob Greaves did get on the end of a few set pieces.

23:52Stuart Watson:A couple of fouls got given against him, but he was the one there sort of attacking it at the far post a few times. But sort of in possession, I don't think that kind of helped with Ipswich's balance and chemistry really in this game. So, yeah, that's probably the summary of Jacob Greaves at left back for me.

24:14Ross Halls:Yeah, definitely. But yeah, those changes changed the game. And yeah, Town were really much on the up. Although, I want to give a shout-out, maybe I shouldn't be giving a shout-out to a whole City player, but Liam Miller was one of their threats. And I know when he came off the bench, or came off, sorry, got subbed off, he was not happy, was he, Stu? He was, yeah, chucked his gloves on the floor and yeah, he wasn't happy. But that's sometimes good when you see an opposition player who is threatening getting subbed off.

24:44Stuart Watson:yeah um the whole manager um said afterwards that there were there were a few times in the game where he felt his players didn't make the right decision that and then highlighted that miller was kind of in acres of space out on on that left hand side and they they didn't sort of spot him um or pick him out and i think that's where his frustration came from because he i think he he sensed that this was a game that he might be able to to get something from he had one little moment didn't he, where he ran down the left side of the box and rifled a shot over the bar on the angle but yeah, threw a little wobbly, didn't he, when he came off and chucking things on the floor and got the ooh response from the crowd and that in a way kind of added to the atmosphere building as well, didn't it?

25:30Ross Halls:It did and we've been building up Stu to the moment and that was an incredible moment for Azor Azor Matasiwa, the Dutch destroyer, with an absolute rocket. I was right behind it and I've obviously watched it back many times. It is an unbelievable strike. I want to hear your thoughts on it, my friend, because we've been waiting. You know, he's always had a few shots, not too many, but his first town goal, what a way to do it.

26:00Stuart Watson:Yeah, first thing to say is that two of the substitutes are involved. Two of the players that combined so well against Swansea last weekend. And Anis Mometi, who came on and just had the, he comes on with that little bit of swagger, a bit between his teeth that, you know, come on, I'm going to make something happen in this game. And he tried to basically take on half the whole team in the box and was sort of dancing and dribbling his way, eventually crowded out. Great composure from Leaf on the edge of the box to keep the ball alive and roll it square. And then Azol Matasiwa, a man who very rarely finds himself in such a position, does so well you know it would have been easy to kind of snatch at that someone who's not used to shooting from such positions but he lets it run all the way across his body um uh yeah crunches down low if you look at the still image of the moment of impact is you know his left his left thigh or his left shin is almost kind of touching the ground which enables him to sort of lash through with with such power and um yeah i've called it a rocket i've called it a pole driver.

27:07Stuart Watson:I believe you and AJ had a bit of a discussion around semantics of goal descriptions after the Mometi goal at the weekend.

27:20Stuart Watson:Alex said to me last night he thought Mometi's was more of a rocket than Matasi was and I had to challenge him on that. I thought Mometi's had, I think, a rocket you think if what is a rocket i think it's got to it's got to take off with the with an element of explosion and still accelerate uh and it's got to be straight line i think a rocket has got got to fly in in a straight line i think memetti's had a bit of whip and a bit of bend on it which i think excludes it from being a rocket whereas this this was just you know everything that a rocket is a pile driver at the back of it was still speeding up as it hit the back of the

27:56Ross Halls:62 miles per hour, apparently. Really? That was recorded. And there's a nice clip that the club put out on social media of Azor watching it back. And yeah, he's just so humble about it as well. He's like, yeah, what a strike. I think he's probably just still trying to get over that. He's finally scored a goal. It's a big moment for him just in his career. In general, his first goal in English football. And what a way to win it. We're going to hear from Azor. and the interview he had with Brenner and Callum and obviously AJ in post-match was gatecrashed by Mark Ashton, who was Mystic Mark, who said he was going to score in this game, which, to be fair to him, Azor did.

28:38Ross Halls:So let's hear from Azor, Mattesia. This is a long clip, but I just love hearing from Azor. You know, probably the most favourite sort of goal scorer we're ever going to have. because, yeah, incredible moment. Let's hear from Azul Matasiwa.

28:56Kieran McKenna:Really good feeling. I saw the ball. I asked the ball from Leaf. And he spoke already like during the week. He told me, don't shoot, don't shoot. And there was a moment and I thought I have to shoot because I was like, I was so close to the goal. And I thought, yeah, I'm going to look for gold. And yeah, it was a good hit. an understatement and when you hit it was it one of those ones that you knew straight away yeah yeah you have some moments when you hit the ball that you know okay it can be the ball it can be a goal I had the same feeling as soon as I hit the ball and I saw leaving for my foot I knew okay maybe this can be a goal and what does it mean to get your first goal in English football I have to tell that John Alston Ashton Sorry He told me That I had to score So Come on Mark I said today was his day Said he was my witness Yeah yeah yeah Well done buddy Well done buddy How many times have you said that there?

30:01Kieran McKenna:No today was the day No no Not often to be honest No no He didn't tell me often So no I'm happy I'm happy that he told me And yeah No Very happy with the goal But more happy With the win of course How pleasing How pleasing to get off the mark To get your first goal As well for the club So is it How pleasing to get your first goal for the club? Really pleasing, of course. Feeling the love from the start. Felt the love from the supporters, from my teammates, from the staff. Felt so welcome, so warm. Of course, you want to pay it back. I don't know how, but you want to pay it back. You can pay it back by playing good games, but also by scoring.

30:46Kieran McKenna:and maybe it's better to score in this kind of games when it's very hard to score and when you can make a winning one. I think it's a big moment for me, but I'm happy that I can give the club something back.

31:00Ross Halls:Given the quality of the goal, you should have scored before now, shouldn't you? We'll be expecting more as well. Are we right to do that?

31:05Kieran McKenna:No, I don't expect more. No, no, I will take my chance. If I think I can do it, I will do it. But it's not my job, you know? so I'm there before like in front of the defense for the clean sheets you know so we had many this season we could we could have more but we had yeah we had many and another one today so clean sheet and a goal and a win it's a perfect evening yeah that is the best goal you've ever scored isn't it yeah it is to be honest yeah it was it was an amazing goal to be honest yeah yeah yeah

31:38Ross Halls:it was phenomenal what about the celebration it looked almost like you didn't know quite what to do with yourself when the ball went in was that right um no i i wanted to yeah i have i have a

31:47Kieran McKenna:celebration for my wife and uh for for my for my for my kid but everyone was like running into me so i want to yeah i want to make some space you know so everyone was running and pushing was pushing me so it was like a like a chaos moment um but uh yeah it's not like that i'm scoring every day so I don't have a really good celebration or something I just have an easy basic celebration and that's it oh what a lovely man Stu as well you of course had an opportunity

32:19Ross Halls:to sit down with him early in the season when he first signed and um you know you've got some great stuff from that and uh he's just so likable he's just just from that interview just there just so humble um even just talking about clean sheets as well like that's not his job to score um but But what a way to score your first goal. And yeah, we've said already that he's been so consistent. I attend pretty much every week. And yeah, just a special moment for him.

32:46Stuart Watson:Yeah, as you said, I don't think there's many. You can have picked a more popular goal scorer, really, to do it in that fashion. It's clear how much character ranks highly when it comes to recruitment. at Ipswich Town. We love the promotion heroes of old, but let's not forget they've signed some really good guys as well off the pitch. And Azor has won. Ivan we've spoken in similar ways about as well, haven't we? Kieran McKenna called him an outstanding human person, player and a leader after the game last night. So he's clearly loved in the dressing room and he's clearly loved amongst the fan base as well.

33:32Stuart Watson:I would be staggered if he doesn't go on to be named Player of the Year this season. He's in pole position at the moment. I think the only person that can challenge him for that is maybe if a Jadon Filagene or a Jack Clark suddenly goes on to double their goals tally and have some really big moments over these remaining few games. But he's been so consistent as all Matt Tessira. and yeah, to do this in his first season in English football has been brilliant.

34:01Ross Halls:Yeah, we've got that clip to actually play with McKenna talking about it and he's still continuing as well still. I actually jokingly thought this morning because with the tightrope that, you know, Matt C was on, that would have been funny if he just out of nowhere just forgot about it and took his shirt off. I don't know about funny. That would have been funny, but it would have just been like, he's been so good not trying to go into bad tackles or anything and then, I don't know, he just lost, lose it for a moment. and he just takes his shirt off and he goes, oh no. I always think, I think that's still a stupid rule though when you take your shirt off.

34:30Ross Halls:Agreed. Just like, let players just enjoy the moment and stuff. Like, you're just taking their shirt off. Especially if they've got something underneath it and they want to sort of promote or whatever. But yeah, that was, thankfully, you know, he didn't go too mad. He didn't get an opportunity to really celebrate, like, as he mentioned in that clip because all the players were just pushing him and really getting involved. I think, I remember like, he was about to go and do a jump and then Sedi, Kipre, pushed him. But no, really great scenes. But let's hear though from Kieran McKenna on Matasiwa because he said some really nice stuff.

35:01Stuart Watson:I don't think as on Matasiwa, he's going to score many goals in his career, but what a time and what a way to get it.

35:07Kieran McKenna:Yeah, brilliant. What a brilliant moment for him, brilliant moment for the team and for the club really because we've won a good amount of games this year, but how many have we won off of a moment, a player stepping up with a big moment, that is the clear difference in the scoreline. Tonight was definitely one of those and you need them over the course of the season. Hopefully, if you have a good season, you look back and you remember those big moments and we've had them over the last few years here. So that was definitely a brilliant moment tonight. He's a popular player in the dressing room, isn't he?

35:41Kieran McKenna:But he's become a bit of a leader in his first season as well. No, 100%. He's an outstanding person, player, leader. The leadership side, he's certainly grown into it over the course. It's really not easy when you first come in. But he's a proper standard bearer in how he looks after himself, how he trains. You see how he is on the pitch, how he competes. But a great human off of it and a great teammate. So we're really happy to have him here.

36:11Ross Halls:Yes, indeed. And one thing actually we found out recently, Stu, that after the game, He has post-match massages that take a few hours. He's making sure he's preparing himself for the next game. He just seems like an absolute professional in just everything he does. Yeah, it's just lovely. And yeah, he's going to continue having great moments. We've already mentioned he's going to be the summer signing of the season. Yeah, ploward season most likely. Goal of the season, Stu? Is that going to compete with potentially Jadon Filagini's goal against Norwich? What do you reckon?

36:48Stuart Watson:No, you're putting me on the spot there.

36:53Stuart Watson:How do you separate those two? Jadon's is a hell of a strike from further out and it's in an East Anglian derby, a long overdue East Anglian derby victory. But then we're sitting here talking less than 24 hours after it basking in the glow of the Azor one, aren't we? It's probably still Philistine for me at the moment.

37:17Ross Halls:Yeah, I think we're still in the moment. We've watched that most recently. I always go and click on to watch Adam Fittigine's goal again because it is just incredible against Norwich. But we'll find out at the end of the season when we do the vote. There could be even more special goals this season, hopefully.

37:34Stuart Watson:I mean, we've had our Phil, haven't we? I mean, Fittigine's had his own little mini goal of the season competition going on. We've been spoiled, really, with some of the quality of the goals we've seen.

37:44Ross Halls:Yeah, especially Jack Clark as well, which segues nicely, Stu, onto his chance, which at the time, on the other end of the pitch, I didn't know how bad it was, but he's got a score from here. The keeper made a good save, but it just shot right at him. That would have been perfect way to end the game 2-0, wrap it all up, three points, happy days. Thankfully that happened in the end anyway. But Jack Clark, Stu, he had to score from there.

38:10Stuart Watson:That's a sitter really, wasn't it? I know it's a good save from the goalkeeper, but he has to score. Wes Burns puts it on an absolute plate with that low sweeping cross. He's inside the six-yard box by the time he meets it. He's got time to run onto it, measure it up. Yeah, he had a couple of stabs at it as well, didn't he? Sort of came back to him, ricocheted off him. I think it hit the post second time around. And that would have made for a quite sort of party-time finish, I think, if Hipswich had scored a second. As it turned out, it was squeaky bum time.

38:49Ross Halls:It was indeed a very nervy finish. And, yeah, obviously Ivan Azong came on at some stage. And then Hull, yeah, they were battling. Kit Prair, of course, got yellow-carded because of McBurney, you know, dispossessed him and he stumbles and fouls him. Yeah, how were you feeling in that period, Stu? Because, yeah, 1-0, dangerous scoreline. hole really wasn't threatening them throughout the game but they they knew they had to sort of if they want to get a point they're gonna have to go and chase the game uh the adrenaline was

39:23Stuart Watson:pumping by that stage because um deadlines yeah obviously from a working perspective at that stage of the night you're frantically trying i'm trying to keep the you'll probably notice when you look back at the live blog the updates start to dry up a little bit in the last sort of 10 minutes because at that stage I'm writing sort of the back page of the newspapers for the Anglian and the Star at that stage. You don't want to tempt fate by starting those too early, but you have to because you have to start doing it before the final whistle because they have to be filed. So you've got all that going on, and then you're kind of looking up and you're reacting to the crowd really at that stage.

40:05Stuart Watson:You're not watching as much of the game as you'd like, and you could just sense the kind of the nervousness in the air and the nervousness on the pitch as well. And that's natural given the stakes, you know, given everything, given the stage of the season we're at and the opposition and everything. The game management wasn't great. And Kieran McKenna alluded to it in that clip earlier. That is something that they have to go away and kind of analyse. They weren't composed enough in the latter stages of that game. So just as, you know, when you lose games, you have to take some positives away from it, like the Wrexham game where they scored three really good goals and did come from behind and stuff like that.

40:50Stuart Watson:You know, they've won last night. They've got it over the line. But there are multiple bits of that game, whether it be sort of being more clinical in certain moments, managing it better towards the end that they need to just analyse a little bit and work on.

41:06Ross Halls:Yes, and thankfully they did though They were able to hold, tame the Tigers And to get a win Another clean sheet I mentioned it at the start, Stu But it's just incredible From conceding five goals To three clean sheets in a row Against teams who have got good players And have scored plenty of goals this year In Watford, Swansea and Hull But you've got to give some praise To players like Dara O'Shea Who got a lot of flack after the, didn't have a great game against Wrexham. I'm sure he's happy to admit that, but he's been fantastic since those Wrexham games.

41:44Stuart Watson:Yeah, the response all round has been really good considering a big narrative around this season has been, as this group of players got the character and the bottle and whatever other descriptive terms you might want to use. That's been something that's never been far away from people's lips. It's only taken one setback or two setbacks along the way, and it feels like the whole world has caved in. So, yeah, the players have done really well to minimise that noise at times. And as I pointed out recently, for all the talk about the lack of consistency, Ipswich have never gone on sort of bad, winless runs.

42:30Stuart Watson:I think it's only the longest they've gone without a win is two games in the league since the end of August, which is not something any other team in the division can say. So, yeah, that's the mark of a good team is one that can kind of minimise, you know, bounce back fairly quickly from setbacks, keep the points tally ticking along nicely. And that's what they've done.

42:54Ross Halls:That's indeed. And Kieran McKenna hit a milestone still. He's hit a lot of different milestones and great achievements at the club, but he's become the fastest Itris Town manager to win 100 games, just in 210 games, which we lost a lot in the Premier League last year. So for him to do that is incredible. I want to ask you your favourite wins. I'm going to be putting together a piece soon, but there's a lot to pick out. There's probably more than, say, five. There's probably ten. There's probably fifty. There's loads. but for you, just a few that come to mind straight away because there's a few highlights.

43:30Stuart Watson:Yeah, do you want the breakdown of the 100 wins, first of all? I think he's just pipped Sir Ralph Ramsey by a couple of games to reach the century fastest. I think there's only five managers other than him that have done it. I'm just going to have a quick look. Obviously, Bobby Brobson, George Burley. Sorry, let's just give you the full list. Al Framsey, 212. George Burley, 230. This is how many games it took to get the centuries. Scott Duncan, 2-4-1. Mick McCarthy, 2-5-8. And Bobby Robson, 2-7-1. So quite the company he's keeping there, isn't it? If you want the breakdown of where those wins have come, two in the EFL Trophy, two in the League Cup, seven in the FA Cup, 39 in League One, 46 in the championship and just four in the Premier League.

44:28Stuart Watson:So for him to have achieved this feat with a season devoid of victories in the Premier League, I think, makes it all the more impressive, doesn't it?

44:39Ross Halls:Yeah, although I think I wanted more of an EFL trophy, though. We wanted a trip to Wembley in that competition. But no, I jest, I jest, of course.

44:47Stuart Watson:Favourite wins. I'll throw that back to you because I know it's something that you've been working on. I was kind of thinking, I was thinking more along the lines of kind of iconic winners that have come amongst those 100 with Matasi, where I always think it needs to come relatively late in the game. I think it needs to be the decisive goal. I think the score needs to be level at the time when that goal goes in and it needs to ultimately be the match winner. So if that's my sort of criteria, the goals that spring to mind are obviously Sarmiento. So against Southampton, you had the Leif Davis winner against Bristol City.

45:27Stuart Watson:Sam Morsi at Watford always sort of sticks in my mind. And that's the one I probably make the biggest comparison with because it's a midfielder that doesn't always get in that position. Popular figure amongst the fans, bit of a leader and up he pops to score. A really good girl. Number five shirt, so many comparisons there. And there's a few from the League One season that get forgotten about a little bit. I mean, Burgess v Coventry, there's so many, isn't there? But League One, one that always sticks in my mind is Brodie's penalty against Port Vale. Yeah, a few moments, yeah. Towards the start of that, no, it was towards the end of that winning run, wasn't it?

46:05Stuart Watson:But, you know, pressure was building and that was late on. Burns got a couple, didn't he, against Derby on the Friday night in that black third kit for the first time. Got a late one against Portsmouth as well, didn't he? That was a bit of a battle with Portsmouth back at that time. we've had so many kind of big moments haven't we you know and and over the previous decade or so of covering this football club you could count these sort of moments on on one hand how long did we have to keep going on about Richard Chaplow's goal against Watford you know and it's and now I've mentioned a handful there you could probably follow up with with quite a few more as

46:43Ross Halls:well yeah yeah especially League One um because yeah the Exeter game was like finally we're back in the championship, then the away games at Derby, Coventry, Peterborough. Even just some of the big scores, like the 6-0 against Cholton, Connor Chaplin-Hattrick, and that was a foundation day as well. And of course, he's such a ambassador for that. It was a lovely moment. And then, yeah, in the championship, last time around, some big moments in that as well. Coventry, Southampton, even Bristol City game, where you'd come from behind and score eight goals. Then the Premier League, There wasn't many wins, only four, but the Spurs game still just, that is for me just a great moment because at the Spurs stadium, Sammy Smoddik's opened the score and Dalat makes it 2-0 and finally winning in the Premier League after 22 years.

47:32Ross Halls:Obviously, the Huddersfield game in the Championship as well, where we finally got promoted back to the Premier League. You know, pitch invasion, everything, that was unbelievable. Just seeing people, grown men crying on the pitch, which is just, yeah, will, you know, just be remembered forever. And then, yeah, this year we've had some member ones already with the Norwich game, finally beating them after 16 years. But yeah, as you mentioned, decades prior, yeah, you could just go, yep, Chaplow late winner, Noel Hunt winner, different moments here and there. But now there's a book to be written of just McKenna's 100 wins.

48:07Stuart Watson:I mean, we've not even mentioned like Jack Taylor scoring a last-minute winner at Wolves in the Premier League. Chaplin's winner against Sunderland header in the Championship. so many so so many in there and when um yeah i think it will only be in the true course of time that we kind of realize you know what a little special period in in time this has been and hopefully many more iconic moments and wins and um history to be made under kieran mckenna going

48:38Ross Halls:forwards yes indeed but yeah it'd be great to hear from you guys the kawai army share your thoughts on your favourite win so far under Kieran McKenna, but 100 wins in 210 games. Very good achievement from McKenna. I think he mentioned in the press conference that his brother told him that stat. So his brother's a stat man letting him know. So love that. But yes, dude, just another great night under lights. Once again, just great to see the togetherness as well. You know, from the, you know, two weeks ago, you know, some very toxic sort of time and the social media all over the place with the Towne fan base because of a really bad performance to now.

49:16Ross Halls:It's just everyone's on the up and Towne now third in the table, still got that game in hand. It's all nice and rosy at Porton Road. Any other business from the game?

49:28Stuart Watson:Not from the game. As I said to you right at the very start, we could be having a completely different conversation if Hazel Matasiwa had skied that over the bar and frustration had grown or even if Hull had hit back and got an equaliser late on and it had robbed him of a goal worthy of winning any game, which we're obliged to say, we'd be having a completely different conversation. That's the beauty of football. That is the beauty of the championship in particular, that it's this never-ending, fast-paced soap opera. That's why we love the game. yeah it's set up nicely now isn't it the gap is cut you know it was needed because Middlesbrough had put the pressure on with it with a win at Birmingham on on Monday night everyone over the weekend in the top half of the table or the top nine all one so yeah three wins in a row cuts the gap on the top two to three still got that game in hand to come still got Millwall and Middlesbrough to come to Portman Road.

50:31Stuart Watson:There's an East Anglian derby still to come as well at Carrow Road. Exciting times with a little bit of nerves thrown in as well.

50:42Ross Halls:Yeah, of course. 12 games left to go for Kieran McKenna's side. And yeah, it's going to be... I'm sure it's going to be up and down. It's going to be a rollercoaster these next 12 games, but it's fun. That's why you love football. And yeah, back to Portman Road for the third game in a row on Suffolk soil. Stu, Leicester in town, the Foxes, who are not very good, I have to admit, to say it bluntly. I think they're winless than 10. Of course, they've got a new manager in Gary Rowett, who of course has got a win over town this season when he was at Oxford United. So he's got a number. But yeah, just your snap thoughts on this one as we speak on a Wednesday.

51:24Ross Halls:We haven't fought too far ahead for this game because we've just got over last night's game. But just your early thoughts on Leicester, because they've beaten us this season as well. Of course, that annoying game at the King Power back in November or whenever it was, December.

51:39Stuart Watson:It was back last year. December 13th for us. First thoughts are, I'm looking forward to seeing an Alex Jones and Gary Rowett interaction, so I can give it the, oh, Millwall friends in the background. Gary Rowett's collection of Midlands clubs continues sacked by Oxford and has ended up as manager of Leicester City in the same season, firefighter at Leicester City no less, remarkably it will be a decade on exactly from that fairy tale Premier League victory, they are facing potential relegation to League one, obviously off-field issues, a six-point deduction for financial issues. That's been rumbling on for a long time.

52:34Stuart Watson:Intrigued to see how they set up under Gary Rout, who's traditionally been a bit more of a pragmatic manager, but he's probably working with the best group of players I would suggest that he's ever worked with before. Still a talented group there, Leicester. Really, just down from the Premier League with Ipswich, what a reminder of for all the talk about it should be in the top two and they should be walking this etc etc, look at Leicester it's not easy yeah as you say, winless in 10, Rauwit's been in charge for 3, he had a 2-2 draw at Stoke and then he followed that up with a 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough which is a reminder that this is not one to be taken for granted and then they lost 2-0 at home to Norwich at the weekend and Rowett was kind of left bemoaning the fact that we're too easy to score against was his issue with that one.

53:30Stuart Watson:So I would imagine that they will come to Ipswich and they will look at what Hull did and they will look at what others have done and probably look to come and frustrate and be organised and sit and do all of those things, but with some real quality to hurt Ipswich on the counter. So, you know, Fatou scored from the half inside his own half. Mavadidi, I need to have a look at who's available. James is brilliant in midfield when fit. So, not a game to be taken for granted at all, I would say.

54:11Ross Halls:No, and yeah, as we know, we know sort of Gary Warrick's set up and it's going to be a frustrating afternoon, I can imagine, on Saturday. but I want to quickly say I can't believe I haven't mentioned it I did get the prediction bang on by the way, my first prediction I got right in a while it used to be called Rostadamus but I was very like getting oh god don't bloody equalise a hole and I was also like don't score town as well because I want to get that prediction bang on because in the prediction league I was slipping very very deeply as like bottom but now I've got 28 points but Stu unfortunately Hefe has now gone ahead of you by one point so there is a total race that is on I'm sneakily coming back I'm creeping up but I will need to get our prediction right but yeah we won't ask your prediction just yet Stu but just I'm pleased for the gaffer

55:08Stuart Watson:I'll say that I don't know if he'll be listening but he was meant to be in Mexico last week and this week. He was really looking forward to it and everything that's been going on over there with the drugs cartels shooting each other meant that he had to sensibly call that off. I think he still managed to get a few days in Portugal. He sent me a nice picture from the North Norfolk coast this morning. Hopefully, him rising to the top of the predictions league at least give him something extra to smile about today. but we'll have him back next week. But yes, it's hotting up in the predictions league just as it is in the actual real table itself.

55:52Ross Halls:Yes, and to be fair, in previous years gone by, we've always done sort of predictions but I've always just failed in terms of keeping updated with the leaderboard. But this year, I'm trying my best to keep it up. It's more if someone goes on holiday and then they don't tell us a prediction and you're like, oh, you can't. It's just non-invoid now. So if that does happen, if someone doesn't mention their prediction, We just won't put it down when you didn't give us any of your predictions. That's on them. Pretty much. But, yeah, we won't be sharing our predictions just yet. We'll do that on the Boot Room and on the socials.

56:24Ross Halls:But, Stu, a very happy podcast today. Any other business you want to mention as we go into another week looking ahead to another game?

56:38Stuart Watson:I don't think so, Ross. No, I think we've covered pretty much everything about the game As you said, I'm sure they'll be... We've had a snapshot of the highs and lows of the last few weeks. Kieran McKenna and his players can talk about blanking out the noise, not looking at the league table.

56:59Ross Halls:They're looking at now, surely, aren't they?

57:02Stuart Watson:Trying to keep level regardless of what happens. We don't have to do that. Fans don't have to do that. That's not our job. We're meant to ride that roller coaster. and I know there's going to be a lot more twists and turns to come as well. We all want to get back to the Premier League. Of course, I hope they get over the line. But the Championship's fun, isn't it?

57:27Ross Halls:It is fun. Yeah, more games. Anybody can beat anybody. And yeah, it's going to continue, I'm sure. Back at Porton Road against Leicester City. But Stu, thank you so much for joining me as ever. thanks everyone for listening as well shout out to our sponsors molecular uk use the code k kway10 to get all your cleaning business for your car they do some great stuff our local stuff company to check them out stanley stew you've been able to use any of their bits and boz maybe we need to do it for the pool car because that's getting a bit dirty these days um so maybe we can invest in that for the for the company going come on use our code to sort it out

58:05Stuart Watson:Yeah, that will need a wash before Stoke away, which is our next one, isn't it? Can it switch? We've got to navigate Leicester and then can it switch? Do it on a potentially cold Tuesday night in Stoke. That old adage doesn't quite ring as true as it did in the past, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. But yeah, we could give the little, give the cool car a little cleanup, couldn't we, if we can get our hands on some products. You've nailed Molecular, by the way. Well done, you.

58:34Ross Halls:I think because now I say Molecular UK I think now I've got an extra thing I need to mention because I remember that was Heathie who just dropped it on a pod once and went oh are we supposed to be saying UK all along because they're like another American or European company that's called Molecular as well so I think once again I'm not thinking too deeply about it I think before I was trying to read it to just but now I'm fine just kind of a quick look on Stoke on Trent for that game on Tuesday it's going to be it's actually going to be pretty warm-ish it's going to feel like 7 so and it's dry but that can easily change because it is Wednesday now and Tuesday looking at the forecast it can easily change but yes also follow us on our socials Kings of Anglia on everything we're on everything these days so check it out although we're not on Snapchat I don't know if that's a social media thing but we're not on that but we are on TikTok and all that other bits and bobs and also Stu, K-A-Way Live we're still very much sort of like on edging like oh please don't move because we've seen the Southampton game being rearranged to a 5.30 kick-off now although that can easily get rearranged if Southampton progress in the FA Cup but KOWAY live at the Barthes and Itchwich 18th of April after the Borough game we're just fingers crossed it doesn't get moved but it'd be great to see you there tickets are on sale make sure to get them as soon as possible because we don't want to miss out because it's going to be a great night discussing all things town with a bit of nonsense, with a bit of strike and some booze.

1:00:07Ross Halls:Why not join us? It'd be great to see you there. But Stu, thanks for joining me as always. And we'll be looking ahead to Leicester throughout the week. Check out the website and all that jazz. And look at that. Perfect hour. Hope you've enjoyed. Bye for now.

1:00:34Thank you.

1:01:06Thank you.

1:01:32Thank you.
