In short

Ipswich Town’s transfer deadline day (after-deadline-day “KOA After Dark” podcast) focused on the club’s lone senior signing: striker Zian Fleming. The hosts recap all deadline-day ins and outs, discuss Ipswich’s 25-man Premier League squad registration constraints, and debate whether the window’s lack of an additional defender (and no loan signings) could hurt them. They also assess the window overall and predict Ipswich’s survival chances.

Guests (hosts)

Lady Luck (co-host, runs the show); Stuart (often “whispering” from his lounge/beer); AJ (tracked the live blog for ~16 hours, close to the signings); “Sri Watson” (phone-working updates, deadline-day logistics).

Guest backgrounds

All are Ipswich Town-focused football podcasters/commentators with long-term coverage of the club and its transfer windows.

Key claims

Fleming is the right “proven” Premier League number nine (11 goals last season for Burnley), with physical aerial strength and hard shooting; Ipswich’s defensive concerns are manageable despite no extra centre half; the window is a near-9/10 success; Ipswich should finish around 17th.

Notable examples

Fleming’s goal profile (right/left foot, headers, penalties, free kicks); add-ons structure (£17m guaranteed + £3m add-ons); exits include Cameron Humphreys loan to Huddersfield and Chia Ogbena loan to Lincoln; defensive discussion centers on O’Shea at right back and the next match vs Liverpool.

0:39Mark Heath:hello friends it is just coming up to half 11 on tuesday september the 1st 2026 and once again you join us for what i would say is one of the highlights of the koa calendar one of our two annual KOA After Dark, after deadline day podcast. You'll see if you're watching, I am permanent sconce downstairs in my wife's office because she's upstairs asleep with the hound. Stuart, it looks like you're in your lounge, I'm guessing, for the same reasons. Your family are upstairs in bed. AJ, you remain in your bedroom, so at least there is some consistency. Busy day for you boys, of course. um aj you've been on the live blog for about 15 hours getting loads of mad questions so you've had your phone pressed your ear for a similar length of time getting updates uh sri Watson you've done many of these now how was it for you uh yeah you'll get the classic sort of whisper voice whispery after dark because family are sensibly in bed like most people are at this period of time um it's been a busy few days hasn't it going from uh what was it aj about 16 hour round day going to old trafford and back on sunday yesterday bank holiday monday working the phones to see where it's which would be at it's not been quite the busiest of deadline days that we were maybe anticipating um with just the one signing in that comes on the stroke of 11 pm in the end A little bit of trimming, but not quite as much as we anticipated.

2:19But I'm pleased it's over, as always, and we can really focus on the football.

2:24Mark Heath:Absolutely. We can finally get to just the football, whispering Watson there from his lounge. AJ, of course, is delighted because the man that Tan have signed is a football friend, a close personal friend, the Anne Fleming. Millwall friend. Oh, Millwall friend. You're a little bit with a lion, Cian. Oh, you're from Ireland. Oh, you're Dutch as well. There we go. We're all a bit delirious. So you're buzzing, aren't you? Absolutely buzzing. Yeah, absolutely. I'm going to be the opposite. I'm going to be really shouty and excitable compared to Stu. I think she'll be doing some ASMR on the side, the way that he comes right up to the mic.

3:02Stu's on the beer. Obviously, it won't be quite as good as the famous deadline day. Good choice. The famous deadline day of Mrs. Watson coming in and naming old Liverpool players, which I don't think we'll ever top that. But yes, this was good. And it was also nice to have a familiar face being the big deadline day signing and getting to traipse through all the old interviews I did with him to check in the profile for tomorrow. So, yeah, enjoyed that. And I can now big up Zian Fleming for basically – he'll just start on a 9 out of 10 player rating most weeks, I think.

3:36Mark Heath:Yeah, he's got favourites now, very much so. Stuart, before we get into the breakdown and Alex can tell us how great Zian Thumbing is and why he's delighted that Tam has signed him. Do you just want to run us through what has actually happened? Because as you say, it wasn't the busiest of days. There were plenty of things going on. But in the end, only one through the door, a couple of exits. So let's just do the details showing what has happened in It's Rich Town on deadline day. Yeah, we went into today wondering whether it was going to be two in, four out for It's Rich Town to stay within the the 25-man squad rules, which I can come on to in a bit.

4:12It's ended up being just the one in, and that is Zian Fleming, the striker, who we've just been mentioning, which made us sweat. It goes right down to 11pm on the dot when it gets announced. Obviously, that comes after Ipswich had to pivot from Tammy Abraham, alone, as we revealed at the end of last week, Thursday, I think, had been agreed with Aston Villa for him. he turned that down because he wants to stay and fight for his place at Villa as we speak I don't think this has changed but he's turned down Everton as well Everton made a late play for him so Ipswich can take a little bit of comfort from that that it wasn't personal, he wants to stay at Villa, a club he only just joined in January but yeah, Abraham was off the table Ipswich as I'd sort of been communicating had kept several plates spinning, several deals warm for that eventuality.

5:10And they switched their sights to Zian Fleming. And it's been quite an intense day of negotiations from what I gather. It's had a few twists and turns is how it's been described to me. You can see the strength of feeling from Burnley fans about allowing their top goal scorer from last season to leave, someone who started this season really well, for a fee that they think is nowhere near enough. Yeah,£20 million total package, but it's 17 guaranteed with 3 million add-ons, which I think are a stretch to reach by all accounts. So yeah, Ipswich get their new number nine. Four-year deal, could make his debut against Liverpool on Friday night.

5:57In terms of outs, just to dot the I's and cross the T's, Cameron Humphries returns to Huddersfield on loan, where he spent the second half of last season, drops back down to League One, only after he signed a new contract to Ipswich. So Gary O 'Neill spoke very well of him after his performance against Leicester in the Cup last weekend. They're not quite ready to give up on Cameron Humphries yet, so another loan for him. And Chia Ogbena joins Lincoln City in the Championship, newly promoted Lincoln City on a six-month loan. That's it for senior deals today. Tudor Bendell, exciting young winger who ripped it up for the under-21s and was kind of in and amongst it over pre-season.

6:44He's gone on loan to Luton in League One, which is a good move for him for his development. And that's all she wrote on deadline day.

6:53Mark Heath:Before we get to AJ's soliloquy about Zian, in terms of the numbers because we know obviously they needed out they've got a balanced squad, they needed people to go out as we sit here now they've got to 25 right by deregistering or you'd imagine they'll deregister David Parton Yes that's right just fit within the 25 because the likes of Alex Palmer, Anis Mometi Jack Taylor who were all linked with Championship clubs over the summer they've stayed Taylor's situation obviously complicated by the fact that He's still rehabbing from that knee surgery he underwent at the end of the season. Alex Palmer's had a couple of niggles of his own.

7:33I think elbow, shoulder along the way. And the goalkeeper, Domino's, didn't quite fall for him to move on. So he stays. And Anis Mimeti, I think, has just said that he wants to stay and fight for minutes and get that first taste of Premier League football. So as a result of that, they're going to have to not register David Button, the veteran fourth choice goalkeeper uh he'll play for the under 21s he'll act as an extra player in training but um they won't register him for premier league minutes which takes them to a 25 man squad do you want me to to quickly zip through those 25 names is that useful then

8:12Mark Heath:let's let's get all the facts out of the way shall we all right well it's technically a 27 man squad because there's two players in Abdul Wattara and Sindri Valetageli both 20 that don't have to be registered due to their age so the 27 man squad is Sherpen, Walton, Palmer as the keepers, Wattara, Furlong O'Shea, Diop, Greaves, Kipre Davis in defence Lukic, Palacios, Florentino Matasiwa, Nunez and Taylor as midfielders Fatawu, McAteer and Ciso, Valetageli Mehmeti, Maida, Villagene, Clark, Emerson, Fleming, Akpom for the forwards. Right then, here we go then. It's your time to shine, Alex. I've got one question for you.

8:57Mark Heath:First of all, we said this morning that it was going to be make or break today. The Richwich Town got a striker. We said throughout the summer they needed to sign an experienced, proven striker to come in and help Emerson get the goals. Hopefully he's going to keep them up. They've got Zian Fleming, who scored 11 goals last season in the Premier League for Burnley. You've seen him play more than all of us and obviously have a bit of a friendship with him, a relationship with him there too. Is he the right striker that's going to help keep town in the Premier League this season? Tell us all about him.

9:31Yes. I mean, Stu mentioned about the add-ons being quite high, but I assume when he wins the Ballon d 'Or and finishes top score in the Premier League that they will be the full three million. Yeah, I think he is the right striker for Ipswich Town. And in a way, it's kind of a move I like a little bit more than Tammy Abraham in that I thought that Tammy Abraham was quite similar to Emerson in a lot of ways, quite similar profiles. And Zian Fleming's very different. He's a really strong all-rounder. Look, the goals speak for themselves, get that out of the way. Ever since basically leaving Ajax and having that first real spell in the Netherlands, you can see the return that he's had when he was at Sittard, the first season when he was at Millwall, the second season at Millwall was kind of the only drop-off he's had recently and that was in a Millwall team that were kind of new manager struggling then gets his move to Burnley much better team you look at the goals he scored in the promotion season and then again in what was a terrible terrible team last year was I mean 11 goals in in that side again speaks for itself but it's kind of a there's more to Zian Fleming someone who started off as a 10 but then transitioned into a nine, especially kind of latter stages at Millwall, but also at Burnley.

10:44And he's just developed really well. Someone who started off as quite a scrawny, still quite tall, but not like a huge attacking midfielder. Just literally that first year at Millwall, I watched him in about two months go from that to being jacked huge. He felt you can really feel the size he's got. And now when you watch him play, you can see the power that he's got. You can see how strong he is in the air. That's going to be really important, how he holds up the ball. And he just hits a ball really, really, really hard. And there was a goal compilation I put out on Twitter that someone did, a Burnley fan did, and you look at the goals he scored.

11:23It's a bit of everything. Right foot, left foot, penalties, free kicks. Can do it with his head. There's just so much to him. So really nice all-round striker who's been able to deliver in the Premier League. and I think that's exactly what Ipswich want. It's not someone who's just going to be direct and hold up the ball. It's not someone who can just do it with the ball on the floor. A little bit of everything. And, yeah, that's pretty exciting. If you're able to score that many goals in that Burnley team last year, hopefully with better service, he can have a really strong season.

11:55Mark Heath:And do you see him coming in as the kind of starting striker? Or can you see it being like a game-by-game thing with him in Emerson? I mean it could be kind of game by game playing it by ear but you're not going to take someone who's scored 11 goals in the Premier League and chuck them on the bench for the season that's for sure um so I think he's gonna the fact he's got the number nine shirt uh the fact he's done it at this level before uh he's someone who has worked incredibly hard to get to this point from the first time I spoke to him he was dead set on I want to be a Premier league football player and this is the way that i see doing it working my way up hopefully getting there with millwall didn't happen but uh and then being able to kind of establish himself and prove himself for the level um so yeah i think that's what he's here for is to be that main number nine to be starting games week in week out um and ipswich have someone who's proven he can deliver at that level and yeah for all of the physical stuff i've been talking about as well um you can tell immediately what kind of mentality this guy has in terms of uh how he trains how he practices the work rate i've often had him described as kind of first to arrive last to leave at training um yeah ticks all the boxes from that side as well i know aj you're talking about his physicality and the fact he's stuck on some some muscle uh his celebration is this isn't it it's um it's Nate Diaz, I think.

13:20I'm from the UFC. Is that what it is? Yeah, that's what it is. That's been the running theme. That is actually why he does it. Is he an MMA fan? He is an MMA fan. That's what it was based on. It was a big thing. Yeah, it was it. It was a big thing at Millwall. Gary Rout was massively into his MMA go home after games at the den and he'd go watch it. Zian was big into it as well. Gary Rout's profile picture was him. His head on WhatsApp. It was his head on Conor McGregor's body doing the strut for a while. Insider secrets there. But yeah, just to put into picture how big it was in that Millwall dressing room.

13:59Yeah, the other thing as well that I'll tease, and I'm going to do a bit more on this when we get the chance to talk to him. He's really big on the traitors. Huge, like obsessive. And we'll do a bit more on that. I'm not going to give away too many. I'm not going to show all my cards on that one yet. But yeah, we'll see with that one down the line.

14:19Mark Heath:Nick Diaz is famous for his trash talk and also for something called the Stockton slap where instead of punching people in a fight you would slap them to try and wind them up so let's see if Zian I'll be up for it, I like it Siri, let me ask you the same question I asked AJ at the start of that Zian Fleming, he's the striker they've got, is he the right striker is he the man, is he proven enough do you think, sitting here half an hour to the deadline's shot, to give us confidence that he could be the man to get the goals that keeps town up? I'm not going to pretend that his CV is better than Tammy Abrahams.

14:54Tammy Abrahams, who's won all three European trophies, I think, Champions League, Europa League, Conference League, played for Roma, AC Milan, Chelsea. We can't compare Zian Fleming, who's played for Millwall and Burnley prior to this moment. But Fleming is an Ipswich Town player permanently for the next four years. Abraham would have been alone. Abraham was umming and ahhing about it, said no. Fleming is chomping at the bit for this. As soon as this was on the table, he was desperate for it to happen. And that's what we want in players that pull on the Ipswich Town shirt and the badge.

15:36It would have been nice to have someone maybe with a slightly more Premier League experience than sort of one year under their belt. But the main thing is Ipswich got one in. strikers certainly at this sort of rarefied air that Ipswich are operating in now are hard to find and hard to get. And they've got one that scored 11 goals in the Premier League last season. And just looking at it, that's the same as Eketike at Liverpool, as Mbwemo at Man United, Richarlison, Sesko. So that's not a number to be sniffed at, certainly in a team that ultimately got relegated. So, you know, I've been watching the highlights packages of his goals today.

16:20He's a between-the-post striker by the looks of things. If you look at all of his goals, they tend to be kind of first-time finishes from the heart of the box, headers. It's going to be a great battle between him and Emerson. Let's not forget how well Emerson has started the season. You know, AJ says they've not dropped 17 million pounds on a player not to start. Well, Emerson's the club record signing still at the moment, and he's made a really good start to the season. I've really liked seeing him grow throughout pre-season. I thought he was great against Sunderland, and I thought it was what really missed him when he went off at half-time at Old Trafford.

16:57So it was important that the full burden of responsibility was not put on his young shoulders. Emerson, and now he's got someone that can sort of take the load off and compete, and it's going to be really fascinating to see who kind of grabs the shirt out of those two, I would say.

17:17Mark Heath:Is he a similar physical size to Emerson, AJ? Is he 6 '3 and a bit of a tank? Is Fleming similar or is he slightly smaller? Smaller, definitely smaller. He's just really well built. Again, the first time I spoke to him, initially it was actually over Zoom, but we did one after that. You could still see he was still getting used to stuff in England. and it took a while to sort everything out, moving over from the Netherlands. It was actually at the start of Millwall's big European recruitment drive. They hadn't done a lot before then, so there was a lot to get through. And then I met him again at the den, and I looked at him.

17:53I was like, your bicep's the size of my head. What have you been doing for the last two months? Yeah, he really bulked up in that time. And I think that was the main thing. He kind of had all the raw attributes that he needed, and he just needed to kind of add the physicality. I was a little bit worried initially, kind of looking at him thinking, are you going to be able to handle that side of things? Not only has he been able to do that, he's actually made that key strength to his game. So yeah, different kind of profile, but still so strong in the air and so good at battling centre-backs. And the desire to come here as well, I think was really important, as Stu mentioned.

18:29Fleming is someone who loves the big city life. He loved living in London. I would imagine that when he was at Burnley, he was living in Manchester, which I'm sure that he loved. So to come to Ipswich, which is like the polar opposite, I think he needed to be sold on the project and to be so desperate to come, as we know he has been. He seemed very sold on that project, I think. So, yeah, really exciting.

18:51Mark Heath:Obviously seeing the lovely Suffolk coast, hasn't he? Steve, I'm going to ask you another question about deadline day. They've got the striker. When we spoke this morning, we said potentially a defender as well. now you can't always have everything clearly and they've set all sorts of records and£180 million they've spent but there's any concern that they haven't got that defender because clearly we saw the weekend that they got shredded by Man United and you would say if you were being a devil's advocate Daro Shea played out of position at right back you've got Davison Greaves who were also part of that side that got relegated from the Premier League last time out do you think that's going to come back to bite them or are you fairly sanguine about the lack of defensive signing today oh you're on mute mate I would have liked another centre half and I think Ipswich clearly did as well you can see I did a story early in the summer that Lloyd Kelly was someone that they were looking at Alexandro, Brazilian centre half was someone they were linked to

20:05so they were looking at a centre back but I think it became apparent heading towards deadline day that they weren't going to get one that was a slam dunk improvement on what they've got with the budget that's left

20:25Mark Ashton has spoken about how the owners have urged him to push towards the very limits of financial fair play rules. I think they're getting there now. And there was probably a stage in the window where they thought there was going to be some more incoming fees. Jadon Filagene, you know, at one stage was looking like, you know, that might be someone who would go for good money. He stayed and I think that's great because I still think he can be an important player for Ipswich this season. Anis Mameti has opted to stay. He's someone that they could have got some decent money for. Palmer as well, you could have got some money for as well.

21:06So with all of those players staying, with the limited funds that were left to play with, obviously at one stage it was going to be a loan for Abraham. Now it's a chunky fee on Fleming. I just don't think they're in a position to be able to get the extra centre half of requisite quality. So in answer to your question, having seven players in that defensive unit is maybe one thinner than they would like to be. And of that seven, you've only got two specialist fullbacks in Darnell Furlong and Leif Davis. Obviously, Wattara can play both of those positions and has versatility. O'Shea is playing there at the moment.

21:56Yeah, one more would have been a bonus, but, you know,

22:03O'Shea, Davis, Furlong have proven themselves to be super robust, haven't they, in recent years, churning out 40-plus games year after year. And as much as new signings, new shiny signings are always the ones that we get excited by, let's not forget sort of the love that's been built for Daro Shea, us and our people, and the captain that's kind of driving standards behind the scenes, Leif Davis in his fifth season now at Ipswich Town, who's the last of the band of brothers that we should all have a real kind of connection to. Jacob Greaves, I think, is someone that has still got a very high ceiling in the game, only 25 years of age.

22:45I can see Gary O 'Neill really enjoying working with him in the same way that he kind of helped Max Killman really sort of take his game to a new level at Wolves. So, you know, and Diop's brought a wealth of Premier League experience in as well. So, yeah, I'm not getting too concerned about that sort of defensive stuff. And yes, Man United is fresh in our minds, but, you know, let's not forget that's a dodgy VAR incident and a couple of nice breaks for Man United in there as well. So I'm not reading too much into that at this moment in time.

23:22Mark Heath:Yeah, I'm aware of Penns. Obviously, this is the first podcast since that game. But clearly, a lot has happened since Bank Holiday yesterday. The boys did a verdict after the game. There's plenty of stuff out there in terms of reaction from that. So I don't propose we spend much time talking about that if we need to talk. It's all about deadline day today. AJ, I'm actually the same question. Are they going to regret not adding another defensive option, do you think? I hope not. I think that it's quite clear that that back line is going to be looking as it has done now with O'Shea sticking out at right back going with Diop and Greaves as the centre backs maybe we'll see a bit of Kipra at times and Leif Davis as the left back there with maybe Wattara again I still don't know what that position is going to be is it centre mid?

24:07Sorry to interrupt there AJ but are you confident that O'Shea right back is the sort of longer-term plan. I think it is going to be until January. It's weird, isn't it? It's just trying to think about where Wattara fits in in all of this. I still don't know. I still have no clue. Has O 'Neal signed him in that right-back role? We haven't seen him play. Have we seen him play right-back at all? He's played left-back. He's played, I think he came around a couple of times. So we haven't even seen him play that role, let alone having any indication he's going to be the starter there. So I think at the moment that is the way that I'd be leaning towards it.

24:49I was okay in pre-season with O'Shea right back, and then the Sunderland game, the start of that happened, and I watched him up against Angulo for pace, and that worried me a little bit. And that was why when there's been a lot of clamour for the left-sided centre-back role, I was kind of actually quite keen for Ipswich to go and get a right back and then just to shift everyone on to have O'Shea going alongside Dioff. I know you're missing the left footer in that back line, but I thought that was probably the way to play it. So, yeah, look, hindsight's going to be a wonderful thing. We could be sat here in a month's time saying, well, this player's injured and he's suspended and we're going into this game looking really short.

25:33And why didn't they get this player in the summer? and yeah, it becomes a little bit trickier. Hopefully we won't get to that spot, but also you don't know how hard they push the finances with that. And I've got a question for you, actually, because I've been asked this about 50 times today in the blog, kind of going on with the financial side. Were you surprised that they've not done a single loan deal at all? And I think I got a stat in the comments saying it's the first time in about 20-odd years or something that Ipswich have had a summer window where they've not signed a loanee, spent a lot of money, but no loanees have come in at all, not as a straight loan and not with an obligation or option to buy at the end?

26:16Yeah, probably am surprised, actually, because I thought they would... Is it two Premier League loans that you can have? Yeah, I thought that would be an option that they would look at. Calvin Phillips was obviously one last time around in the Premier League. but it's, I don't know, loans and perms, you can get carried away. To be honest, does it make any different? You can sign players on loan and then easily get them permanently at the end of a year, and equally you can sign players permanently and then they get sold, if they're any good, a year later anyway. So the whole don't get attached to a loan player thing probably doesn't really matter too much anymore, does it?

27:00But yeah, that hadn't really struck me. this will be the first time in a long time without a lone player in the squad.

27:07Mark Heath:I read that, Stu, in the bit you've done for tomorrow morning. She penned a bit for 6am tomorrow, which is like his thoughts on the window. I had to reread that a couple of times, the fact they don't have a lone player, which is so unusual. And for a long time, lone players were like the kind of the crux of their business, wasn't it? It felt like for a while. Just on the defensive numbers thing before we move on, we've spent a big chunk of this summer discussing whether it's going to be back three wing backs Gary O 'Neill talking about being tactically flexible the evidence so far is that it's going to be almost McKenna-esque 4-2-3-1 front footed has been that throughout pre-season and even at Manchester United at the weekend it was only back five once the goals started flowing wasn't it I don't know, it'll be interesting to see how they do in some of these tougher games going forwards.

28:02The next one, of course, is Liverpool on Friday. Dara O'Shea, if he's to be at right back again, only has the small task of facing £123 million Barcola on the left wing potentially for Liverpool. If there is a moment, and I said this is sort of a hot take, there'll come a point in the season where they might have to switch to a more pragmatic wing-back system. Have they really got the personnel to do that now? If we're talking about limited numbers and you start as a seven-man defensive unit, if you start talking about wanting to start five of them, that's a little bit thinner on numbers than you would perhaps like.

28:41So I think it's an indication, a further indication, that Gary O 'Neill is really going to go for this and be quite attack-minded in most of the games, certainly the home ones.

28:52Mark Heath:The defensive thing does worry me, I'll go on the record and say that. I'm not convinced about the Irish out-right-back for reasons previously discussed. I don't know if he's a man. Obviously, clearly, he is fat. People say, well, it's not like he's not fat. He is fat. I appreciate that. He's a good player. But he's playing out of position. He's going to be up against the best wingers in the world every week. That's quite different. So that does worry me. But anyway, let's stay positive. I want to finish with reflections on the window as a whole. But before we get to that, I've got a question about one of the exits for both of you.

29:24Mark Heath:I'll go to you, AJ, because you saw him play a fair bit in pre-season. Cameron Humphreys has gone out on loan again. We talked about whether this was time for the big departure, the big farewell. Could it be the last game he played in the Carrow Cup the other day? British Town, it's not. He's gone out on loan again. He signed another new deal as well. But he's gone out on loan to a League One side again. Now, I know there's a connection with Huddersfield. But for me, I'm thinking, right, so they clearly think that there could be a future there with Cameron Humphreys. As we've said before, a very technical player.

29:57Mark Heath:just maybe doesn't have the physicality to be a Premier League player at the moment. But if you're thinking he could still be useful to us, say, if we go down, for example, surely you want him playing the Championship this season, don't you? You don't want him back playing in League One. They want to see how he does in the Championship, no? Yeah, that's what I felt. And, you know, I looked through the teams and I'm not saying that you should have gone to a mid-table or top-half team and expect to walk in and get minutes. But you look at the two that I picked out, Lincoln and Bolton, for example, where I thought he could have gone in and had an opportunity to stake his claim in a championship team, looking to punch above their weight a little bit.

30:37Yeah, I thought that would have worked quite well. It's difficult to be able to say without knowing the ins and outs of it and what was planned. Could it have been that they thought about permanent exit? Who were the teams who'd come to the table for him? Because obviously Huddersfield have had him twice now and could it have been that they just got to the end of the window and thought, well, the only offers that we've got are from, say, Huddersfield and Wickham or someone like that. And the options are we keep him in the squad. And I know that Gary O 'Neill spoke about possibly keeping him in the squad, but I don't think that would have benefited him because he wouldn't have played.

31:13So did they get to a point where they say, well, we either keep him in the squad or we accept this loan offer from Huddersfield to have him go there for another year? There's no guarantee that there were championship clubs that had come to the table for Cam. And obviously, I would have liked to have seen him at that level, but it's better for him to go and play another full season, hopefully for a team that can go and push and maybe even get promoted from League One and build those connections there, than being with Ipswich and maybe playing minutes for the under-21s or just being in training every weekend and getting a sniff in the Carabao Cup or something like that.

31:50so yeah I would have liked something a bit different but hopefully it will benefit him and then we can get to next summer and reassess it might be that he does brilliantly at Huddersfield and hopefully Ipswich are still in the Premier League and maybe there isn't that space for him and Huddersfield in the championship say yeah we'll put this amount of million to sign him permanently it just feels that they're giving themselves a bit more time to decide but it's difficult to know without knowing what was on the table for him.

32:16Mark Heath:Sure, have you got any thoughts on Humphreys team before we move on to window reflections as a whole? I just can't, not quite ready to give up on Cameron Humphries. And I've felt so sorry for him over the last few windows because it's felt like his career has not stalled, but there's been sort of missed windows of development where they've kind of had to keep him around for numbers. Kieran McKenna always talked about it. He's a great kid. He's matured beyond his years. He's technically, as we can see, a very handy player. we know he can do it at the top end of League One from the Wickham loan spell.

32:54So as you say, are you learning any... If he goes to Wickham and does really well, if he goes to Huddersfield and does really well this season, are you learning anything that much new? For him to have a future at Ipswich, it probably requires them to get relegated and there'll be a mass exodus in midfield because you've got to look at the traffic now in front of him. It's vast. maybe this is just a bit of a financial one in terms of, well, if he goes to a championship club and he struggles, that's not going to increase his transfer value. But if he goes to Huddersfield and does really well and replicates what he does at Wickham, then come next summer, we can get a few more pennies for him.

33:38But we'll see. I think everyone sort of wishes Cameron Humphreys really well. I thought that it might be his last appearance in the Leicester Cup game last week. Maybe it's not the chances of him breaking through at Ipswich. Still slim, but are still alive there for Cameron Humphries. So we'll see what happens with him.

34:01Mark Heath:OK, right. I'm going to ask you now both three questions to end this podcast, all about the window as a whole. The first one is when we recorded the pre-season big kickoff preview podcast, I asked you for your best signing so far AJ you said Julio and CISO you were very effusive with excitement about that in fact and I think you certainly look very lively and cut above thus far Stu I think you said Sasha Lukic off the top of my head since then they've only signed two more players but one of them is a World Cup winning midfielder first ever World Cup winner to play for it and the other is a£20 million striker who's just come in so are you going to change that opinion Stu?

34:47Yes

34:47Mark Heath:Who would now be the best signing of the summer then? I cannot look beyond Ezequiel Palacios It's fun to say as well isn't it? Ezequiel Yeah for fairly obvious reasons people might go split hairs about World Cup winning midfielder due to his limited minutes in that campaign. But he's got 41 caps for Argentina. He has played a fairly central role when they've won Copa Americas. He was a central part of the Bayer Leverkusen side that went invincible during a Bundesliga title-winning season. It's a pretty staggering signing, I think, from Ipswich. which you could argue it's perhaps the biggest transfer coup in the club's history.

35:40And people might go back years and say it's all relative. But certainly in modern day history and where it should have come from, for them to have landed Palacios is quite something. So if he can stay fit, and I guess that's the big question mark over him, then he could be a game changer. He could be what Granit Xhaka has been to Sunderland last season. So I can't wait to see him properly in action because, yeah, Old Trafford, not too much we can judge from that one, I don't think.

36:14Mark Heath:No, expectations are certainly high. Are you sticking or twisting, AJ? Are you sticking with your man in CISO or twisting to be obvious? Yeah. I'm not going to go to Palacios for starters. A, to be different from Stu and B, because I do just have those concerns still over. there is every chance by the way that he will be the mvp because of everything that she's outlined i do have those concerns about his injury record best signing kind of comes with caveats and i remember saying in cso the biggest thing for me was it felt like he was such a mood raiser at the time it was like a wow it's such mean business and the reason why i'm going to pivot to zian fleming aside from the obvious with the fact he's the best player in the world um is the fact that that Ipswich have just...

36:58I've covered this club now. This is my, what, fourth season, is it? Ipswich cannot sign strikers. They signed De Lapp, which kind of felt like they fell into it a little bit, let's be honest, because he wasn't meant to be the starting number nine. And I've seen the Brogia deal. We've seen Abraham. We've seen Town being linked to a number of strikers that haven't come off. And it has been an issue, let's be honest. It has. And they've now gone and got someone for a really good fee who's just bagged 11 goals in the Premier League. unless he's going to achieve all those add-ons, it's not even going to crack 20 mil.

37:31So given all of that, yeah, I'll go Zian Fleming.

37:35Mark Heath:Okay, predictable. This is going to be a theme, I think. Keep an eye on this lad's ratings, by the way, friends, because Zian might be getting a few high marks. Anyway, next question, boys, and it is around the window as a whole because it's been an extraordinary window. I remember not too long ago, people were saying, well, they haven't signed anyone, it's really worrying. and of course now we're sitting here with a record-breaking summer of spending 180 plus million the most ever spent by newly promoted side five players from this summer's world cup three of whom scored at the world cup uh quality and experience size physicality all the boxes have been ticked you would say um so i'll have to start with you steward because clearly you've covered more of the transfer windows than aj has that's just a simple question Is this, in your opinion, and I appreciate you went around at the turn of the century and that kind of stuff when that's in the Premier League, the best transfer window that TAM have ever had, to your knowledge?

38:37Well, in my 15 seasons of covering the club, I don't think anything gets close. it's all relative of course you can go back to the January transfer window in League One with Luongo Clark, Broadhead and Hurst kind of turbocharging that promotion and everything else that follows is because of that but what they've done this summer is just all the stuff that you've just outlined about World Cup players and goal scorers and the fees involved would have just been pie in the sky unthinkable um laugh out loud stuff just a few years ago um so yeah i think in answer to your question it has to be um time will tell proof will be in the pudding of course but they've given themselves a real chance this year and that's all you can ask um you know you talk about any concerns about this window i guess the slight one in the back of the mind is what happens if it all goes wrong what if they don't stay up could they be left in a bit of a sneaky situation in terms of you know players on loop to long-term deals and could that you know could they get themselves in a bit of mud all that way um mark ashton insisted to me earlier this summer that relegation reduction clauses were still non-negotiable.

40:10They missed out on players last time they got promoted to the Prem because players wouldn't agree to it. And he tells me that that is the case this time around. So I take him at his word on that and that they're sort of protected and they haven't been reckless with what they've been doing. But it's, yeah, it's a remarkable window. You said earlier about sort of the best signing of the one. I had Lukic at the top earlier. I think I'd probably edge in CISO just above him now because I wasn't quite sure. Now I've seen him in action back. I think Ipswich have got a leveled up in CISO, a more well-rounded team player in CISO from the players I've seen.

40:51So I think I'd go Palacios in CISO as my top two. And just quickly, you mentioned Armando Brogier in there. I'm slightly worried that I've got a kind of transfer scoop striking curse over my head at the moment. If you remember, I've had two quote tweets from Fabrizio Romano, he of the millions of Twitter followers for scoops. One was Broya, and that fell through because he failed the medical. And the other one is for Tammy Abraham, who decided he didn't want to come after all. So journalistic integrity is still intact because they were facts, they were true stories, but I am slightly worried. When I call these things first, they don't seem to come off.

41:38You say that, Stu, but you were the man who called Ali Alhamadie to Upswich Town first, and he did sign. Yeah, and he's gone on to become a town legend.

41:50Mark Heath:And he's still there. Let's hope you don't make it a hat-trick in January. in terms of that coming to pass. Give us a score then, Stu, for the window out of 10.

42:08I toyed with like 8.5. We can't be messing about with 0.5s, can we? That's not real. So I'll round it up to a 9. I'll round it up to a 9.

42:22Mark Heath:Yeah. I think I'll be with you there. How about you, AJ? 9 out of 10 is that sort of area that you're in. I know you like your half marks. Have I ever given a half mark? Ever? Stu was the one who did the half marks. I think you gave the away shirt 9.5, did you not? Okay, fair enough. Yeah, good point. Which is actually funny because in my head I was thinking, essentially they were two bits off in my head, like the absolute finished Wow Water Squad picture, which would have been a right back in my mind and maybe another right winger getting a little bit greedy there, saying one to take them to a 9.5 and one then to complete the picture is a 10 out of 10.

43:01Didn't quite get those, which I don't think can be criticised too harshly given the picture of the window. So 9 out of 10 for me.

43:09Mark Heath:2-9 out of 10. Right, final question before we take our lead. What about you, Mark? 9-9, are we making it? I think you can look lower than a 9. It's just staggering what they've done. If you'd have said even at the start of the summer this is what they'd do, I don't think anyone would have believed you as even the most optimistic person I don't think would have believed you so to sit here looking at all the stats all the money they've spent, the club record signings the experience, all that kind of stuff everything they've done with the exception maybe of not getting a defender today you'd say it ticked all the boxes from what we've said they need so I'd certainly go nine.

43:49It may or may not come off but you can't accuse the club of not doing what they've promised to do and that was be ambitious, give it a real good go, spread the net further, address the issues from the Premier League last time of more experience, more athleticism, more physicality. As you say, I think all of those boxes have been ticked.

44:16So, yeah, I think we can only say sort of well done for the business done that you can always find little areas that you could improve upon. AJ just mentioned a couple there. And, you know, you get spoiled, though, don't you? It's amazing as these sort of transfers are rolling in and we're getting a bit blase about the fees. It was Palacios signs. What next? Who else? We need this. We've got problems with that. I think it's important to take a step back, look at that squad as a whole, look at the way they've started as well, and remind ourselves that these are exciting times.

44:51Mark Heath:I can't believe he didn't even spend£200 million. Pathetic, no ambition. Right, final question. I'm going to start with you, AJ. Again, when we go back to the pre-season preview poll and predictions, we'd give our predicted final position for town. We weren't, you know, kind of now solid in the knowledge of what they were going to do in the final few weeks of transfer window. The deadline is done. The window's closed. They've got who they've got. you said 17th in that show i'm gonna now give you the chance to either stick or twist yeah exactly you can go lower mate if you're feeling a little bit you know 20th at the moment yeah no i'm going to stick on that i i think there's a risk of getting carried away especially when you know someone of the incredible caliber of a zian fleming comes in on top of every ball we can't have a city show yeah and you know you go on and they talk about Palacios and Nc and Batou but you still and we're going to do this every time you look through at the teams that have established themselves at this level and we're still going to look through all the squads and go bloody hell look at some of these players look at some of these squads you've got to finish above all we're talking about Palace being someone that could talk about something that could catch look at the signing they've been making today.

46:14You look at Sunderland chasing Fafana in one of the weirdest transfer sagas I think I've seen. All of these teams, they need to get someone down there. They need to finish above Hull and Coventry, obviously. They still need to find someone else and there are not going to be that many teams who I think are going to be kind of dragged into it. So I will take 17. They will find a team to finish above on top of the other two and Ipswich will survive in the Premier League.

46:39Mark Heath:Okay, so it's a bigger question for you because clearly you and I awkwardly predicted them to get relegated in the 18th spot. Not only do we now know what they did or have done in the final few weeks of transfer window, I think we both said striker and midfielder, get them in, you know, you might think differently. We also know, of course, the fact that Hull City, who is everyone's pick to finish bottom, have started the season two from two. They're already sitting pretty on six points. So, are you going to stick or twist? it's still a case of picking three teams to finish above i'm not i'm not getting carried away i'm encouraged excited by what we've seen so far on the business it's made but as you say hull hull have started really well um i don't know what their number of signings is up to now they've made a few more today haven't they um there's doing like another four at the moment that's ridiculous.

47:35They've really gone a bit crazy today. They've certainly upgraded from most people's kind of thought that there'll be relegation fodder, guaranteed. But then I think there'll be others that I thought were going to be reasonably solid that might get dragged into a little bit. I don't know how it's finished at Everton. There were some mad late goings on there today. I know they've got Grealish back. but the vibe around them isn't great at the moment. Crystal Palace, likewise, has been a bit of a mass exodus of some big players there. So there might be one or two that get dragged into it. Go on then.

48:18After speaking so positively about this window, I'll go, hiya, hiya, we're going to upgrade it. I'm going to put them just above the dotted line on 17th.

48:30Mark Heath:that's what we wanted that's the way to end the show I think I'm going to go 20th unfortunately but I'm not I'm not no I do genuinely feel like um they've done what I or what we talked about needing to do in that gap between uh the start of the season and and the closing of the transfer window they've done everything they could possibly do to give themselves the best possible shot and I think you'd say in the first couple of games there's evidence that they've I mean And Man Utd, again, I don't want to go too much over the top with the Man Utd game. We'll go back talking about it. But first half, not only were they hanging with Man Utd, there was a bit of swagger about them as well, wasn't there?

49:06Mark Heath:I was thinking, yeah, not only are these boys competitive, they might actually be decent at this level. They might be more than just surviving. So I think there's enough to make me optimistic, particularly now with Fleming through the door and Palacio set to make his full debut, hopefully on Friday, that maybe edges me just above that dotted line as well, Stu. I do think it's going to be tight, but they can't do more than what they've done in terms of giving themselves a shot. So I will upgrade as well. I'll say 17th. So we're all sitting on 17th. They're going to do it, boys. We need them to do it as well, don't we?

49:45Mark Heath:They really need to do it, given what they've done in terms of spending money. They really, really do. So fingers crossed, as I say, that they could do no more, really, in terms of ticking all the boxes we've spoken about. Boys, it's quarter past 12 now. I'm sure we all want to go to bed. I'll probably have a little whiskey. I'll reveal before I go to bed, as I usually do on a deadline day. Anything else to mention, though, friends, before we take our leave? No, I don't think so. I think this looks like a squad that's going to score goals, and I think it's going to give it a go. I think there'll be days a bit like Sunday where they end up well beaten and we're questioning that side of things.

50:28But I think there'll be days like Sunderland where they can win games at Portman Road and get us off our feet. And the issue last time was kind of turning draws into those fine margin games, just tipping them into the three points and just sort of checking off those wins fairly consistently over the season. and early signs on paper and from the eye test is that I think they can pick up a healthy number of wins along the way. Whether it will be enough, we'll have to wait and see. But I said it once, I'll say it again. What a time to be an Ipswich Town fan follower at this moment in time. This is kind of unthinkable territory from not long ago.

51:16Mark Heath:Completely unthinkable, Stu. surreal dream territory AJ anything else you want to share before we take our leave you know how we have the Japanese journalists who followed Dyson Mider around it's going to be me now with Zion Fleming it's actually not going to be Ipswich Town coverage it's just going to be Zion Fleming coverage you're going to rock up on Friday with a little Stroopwaple for him aren't you oh yeah big time here you go Zion hanging out with the Dutch boys got a few now haven't we Thank you, old Sherpen. Azor Matasiwa. Poor Cain Van Ooverland's feeling a bit left out at the moment.

51:52Mark Heath:A little Dutch gang for AJ to get involved with. Right, friends, we're going to take our leave. I hope you've enjoyed this biannual KOA After Dark deadline day show. As I say, it's just coming up to quarter past 12. It's now Tuesday, Wednesday indeed, isn't it? September the 2nd. Ipswich Town have spent more than£180 million this window. They've set records. They've brought in five players who played at the World Cup, three of whom have scored. They've levelled up every section of the side. Five years, friends, five years after Paul Cook's Demolition Man summer. We've just had the Construction Man summer at Ipswich Town.

52:37Mark Heath:Is it going to be enough? Is it going to be enough? Well, we're going to find out. And that starts on Friday with Liverpool at home. We'll be back later on this week to build up to that. Have a great start to your week, middle of your week. Hope you enjoyed Deadline Day. And we'll be back later on this week to talk to you again.

53:11Thank you.

53:42Thank you.

The boys discuss the down to the wire capture of £20m striker Zian Flemming, what he brings and if he’s the man to help keep Town up.

Then it’s onto the exits and a chat about Cameron Humphreys’ return to League One, before we finish with a trio of questions about the window as a whole.

One, who is the best signing now the window has closed? Two, our scores out of 10 for the window. And three, do we want to change our predicted final positions for Town based on the new signings?
