In short

Kings of Anglia flagship podcast discusses Ipswich Town’s early Premier League form, the “fun” factor under new manager Gary O’Neill, defensive concerns, and the upcoming trip to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. They also debate broader Premier League surprises, dark horses, and tactical matchups (especially against Palace’s back five).

Guests (backgrounds)

Alex Jones and Stuart Watson (step-in “gaffer” for the holidaying host). They are Ipswich-focused football podcasters who analyze match performances, transfers, and tactics; they reference prior media work (e.g., Dean Ashton on TalkSport) and discuss player form and squad selection.

Key claims

  • Ipswich’s opening three games show “plenty of positives” and a gelled new-look team; aiming for ~40 points.
  • Defensive worries are “far too early” to overreact to; sample size is small.
  • Palace are in transition after major departures and injuries, but still have quality and a strong core (e.g., Adam Wharton).
  • Ipswich should keep a “no fear” attacking approach, especially in the next three league games.

Notable examples

  • Ipswich’s response after going 2-0 down vs Liverpool; creating many chances at Old Trafford vs Man United.
  • Palace’s recent defensive record: conceding 2+ goals in multiple recent matches.
  • Palace squad notes: Eze and Gay left; Mateta injured; Saar injured; Wharton and Mitchell highlighted.
  • Predictions: multiple guests lean to 2-2 or Palace 2-1; AI predicts Palace 2-1 with Emerson scoring first.

0:39Ross Halls:Hello everybody, it's me Roscoe and welcome to the latest episode of the Kings of Anglia flagship podcast sponsored by Molecular UK. You do some good stuff for your car, clean that and all that stuff. I'm joined by Alex Jones and Stuart Watson. The gaffer is on holiday so when he's away we can do what we want uh to an extent although he does listen to this but i hope he enjoys his trip to italy um hopefully using some of his um learning of italian um when he orders stuff but boys bring in stew who's technically now the step-in gaffer how are

1:16Stuart Watson:you my friend i'm all right thank you yeah i think while the cats away the mice play that's already come into force today already because between the two of you, I think you've put this record of the podcast back about four times today for various reasons, but we're here and we're ready to record. As we've just been saying off air, it's felt like a bit of a strange week for the first time. No transfer stuff to get our teeth into, no midweek game. So yeah, slowed down a little bit this week, isn't it?

1:48Ross Halls:yeah do you know what I somewhat miss championship now already I know we sometimes moan about Saturday Tuesday Saturday Tuesday but just for what we do you know covering the club it's just you know works well we have a nice routine we know what we're doing when it's a free week you're like okay we need to feel this we need to feel that but

2:07Stuart Watson:I hate to tell you we've got a three week international break coming up pretty quickly it's gonna be fun

2:12Ross Halls:yes but AJ my friend you'll be the one to find Nassfila, I'm sure, but how are you? Yeah, I'm good. I will just be writing daily international break updates. Why not? I'll just do AJ's international break thoughts and pen some feelings about Kazakhstan or whatever. I ended up watching during that bit. But yeah, other than that, all good. Don't worry, Ross. It's Cabo Cup next week. There's your midweek fix. Arsenal at home, Tuesday night, so keep an eye out for that one. But yes, other than that, all good. We've got to bring the energy. Ross, when he came on it, could sense that we were too low, too flat.

2:50So, I've got to try and bring a bit of buzz to your Thursday Kings of England podcast.

2:56Ross Halls:Is Dyson Mider most likely in the Japan squad, hopefully, won't he? So, can we just go to cover a Japan game if they're playing in Japan or somewhere? I'm sure our news quest Shadow We Figures would agree like that. Well, I'm thinking he will be, and also if the squad gets announced while Mark is away, then technically it will be up to Stu to sign off on whether that will be okay so I don't see the problem I was thinking we could do that and then obviously we can kind of double back into South America as well, kind of go round that way because then we've obviously got Argentina that we can have a look at with Palacios don't forget in CISO, with Paraguay a few more goals we might have unfortunately the Brazil squad's been named and Emerson's not quite there but you never know.

3:42Give him a few more he might get there. I'll start planning out a route and I'll budget it and we'll see how we end up.

3:52Ross Halls:Yes, I'm excited. But yeah, it probably won't happen. But boys, three games in, how would you sum up, Stu, in my classic Rosco way, my one word to sum up the opening three games. How would you sum up, my friend?

4:09Stuart Watson:One word.

4:14Ross Halls:you're an awful mate you should you should have words coming out your ears and everywhere

4:18Stuart Watson:your part of your body out of every orifice words coming spilling forth you've restricted me to one

4:25Ross Halls:uh encouraging i'll say that expand is that just expand um yeah well i was thinking along the

4:35Stuart Watson:lines of sort of three words I'd say plenty of positives um point a game there or thereabouts will probably be enough a little bit more than that probably aiming for 40 points so three points from three I think is is a good return um in the two games that always look very difficult on paper I think there's been uh lots to take out of both of them the Man United game was never a 5-2 really. We've dissected that in terms of the way it got away from Ipswich, but to go to Old Trafford and create three, four, five big chances there, there was a lot to like about that performance. And then likewise against Liverpool, the response to going 2-0 down inside nine minutes.

5:24Stuart Watson:Yes, you could argue that after that, Liverpool might have played with piping slippers, but I thought the response from Ipswich was a good one. So allied to that, the fact that I think a new look team has looks to have sort of gelled pretty quickly. That's always a fear. There seems to be a sort of a good energy and connection between the crowd and the team and a new manager. We didn't know what the vibe would be like post Kieran McKenna. Lots of players in there that are fun to watch as well. So all things considered, I'm pretty excited to see what's going to happen over these next three games either side of that aforementioned international break because they look like big ones

6:09Ross Halls:They are very big games which we'll get on to very shortly but AJ what would you be your one word there's a few listeners who sort of went oh the boys were a bit negative on Monday when I was editing it I thought no it was fine for you guys of course you know you had to talk about the elephant in the room and with Sherpa and some other things in the first 10 minutes but overall for it's a positive podcast. But yeah, you encouraged as well? Yeah, I'm encouraged. And I think that as we kind of tried to phrase on Monday, it was a mixed bag, let's be honest. I think that you can't, it's hard to come away with it saying that there weren't more negatives than positives overall, but still to be able to take positives from a game like that, I think has to be seen as a good thing.

6:53My one word, Stu actually mentioned it when he was talking just there. I was going to go with fun because various different things. It just feels different to last time. And the fact that we're now into some games and it still feels different to last time is good. It's more enjoyable. Whereas the last time it was kind of a lot of the hype around the Liverpool game and City walloped. And it all kind of just became a bit of a damp squib quite quickly. Whereas this just feels a little bit different. And you have it with a variety of different things. be it the players that have come in, the likes of Palacios and Nciso and Maeda and Vassu, who are by nature fun players to watch, as Stu said, be it the way that they're playing.

7:35I really liked some of the stuff that we saw in the Sunderland game, the way they attacked the game. Same with Manchester United. Again, it feels like something that Ipswich weren't able to do last time around was enjoy the way they played because it was just so high pressure, so kind of everything was so big. everything was so intimidating we came in all starry-eyed into this and now it just feels like they feel comfortable at the level and they can enjoy themselves a little bit as well and that reflects in their play that i think's been good and also the last part of the bit on it being fun is just i think that liverpool game was a reminder of how significant and how big everything can still feel and that's a good thing like friday night under the lights van dyke barkler debut um coming up into team in the Champions League, all the pyrotechnics, the atmosphere.

8:25So much to like about that. So I really enjoyed it. I really enjoyed the start so far, despite the last two results. And yeah, fun is the one I'd go with.

8:34Ross Halls:Yeah, it has been fun. One thing, though, Stu, a lot of people are bringing up at the moment, and even I just spoke to a Palace fan and he brought up our defence. He thinks that is going to be our problem this season. How are you feeling about that? Because there's a lot of, obviously, flat for Sherpin, but then he's also got the, you know, he's back four in front of him that yeah a lot of people are now questioning that

8:54Stuart Watson:I think it's far far too early to to be reading too much into that on paper it's easy to say and I had this discussion with Dean Ashton on TalkSport ahead of the game on on Friday and I was trying to put a bit of positivity and energy behind Ipswich um just before kickoff which I was made to look a bit silly within nine minutes. But the conversation was Ipswich have spent big, mainly on the top end of the team, on these sort of fun attacking players. But ultimately, it's three of the same back four from the team that got relegated and chipped a load of goals last time. And that is a fact. But I would argue that those three players have improved.

9:43Stuart Watson:they are two years older, wiser, better. Leif Davis I think is a prime example of that. I think he's been one of Ipswich's best performers in these first three games. He looks better defensively and he's back to being a real threat going forwards. Dara O'Shea is the captain. I know we can have our debate about whether right back is the best place in the team for him but from Wrexham away onwards in the second half of last season he was magnificent and he's a player with plenty of Premier League experience. And Jacob Grease, I know he probably is splitting opinion at the moment, but he was signed as someone with a potentially very high ceiling, sort of Harry Maguire-type comparisons, given the fact that he'd come from Hull.

10:27Stuart Watson:And Max Killman is a reference I've used a few times with him, that Gary O 'Neill went in and really improved him at Wolves and turned him into a multi-multi-million-pound player. And then you throw into the mix that they've played Manchester United and Liverpool in two of their first three games. And then, yeah, five goals against United. But, you know, dodgy handball decision slipped by Nunez. One of them, the ball's ricocheting around in the box. Liverpool, yes, we can pick apart the goals defensively in terms of a high line and goalkeeper and stuff like that. But, you know, there was some world-class execution in there as well.

11:07Stuart Watson:in terms of the passing and the finishing. So I'm not getting... It's a valid conversation and debate, but I'm not over-reading into everything at the moment. We've got a pretty small sample size, I would suggest, there at the moment. Do you have to be quite ruthless with the sample size, though? Because there's only a limited number of games in the Premier League in order to go and get your points. And I guess there could be a criticism that comes with Ipswich last time round. did they hang on to Aramuric as a starter for too long? Did that cost them too many points? So I can kind of appreciate I'm looking ahead and saying, what ifs here?

11:45But is there also an aspect of saying you do have to be quite strict? I'm not saying now, you know, drop Sherpen going into Palace or drop anyone really or try and go too hard on anyone. I don't think that's right for where Ipswich are. But is it a case also that you have to be quite kind of firm and swift in your decisions with certain players, certain styles, things like that as well?

12:07Stuart Watson:Yeah. Yes, because as we've seen before, a Premier League season can get away from you very quickly. And if you're a team that is going to be down at the other end of the table, which more than likely Ipswich are, you cannot afford to be chasing your tail. And three games can quickly become five, can become 10. I've written a piece this week about Gary O 'Neill talking about how he was going to maybe differentiate himself a little bit more from Kieran McKenna and be tactically flexible adaptable and when they go to the likes of Man City which is always his reference it won't be the 4-2-3-1 fun attacking philosophy that he's deployed so far I thought we might see that at Old Trafford for the first time, but I understand why he felt maybe he wanted to kind of ride the momentum of the opening day win at Sunderland and maybe United weren't at their best.

13:09Stuart Watson:And I think we've seen that and there was an opportunity there. And I think that was proven in the first half an hour or however long of that game. So that could have tipped another way on the day. It could have easily got a second or a third goal and the crowd could have really turned. So we'll never know on that score, but I could see the logic behind it. Will there come a point where he looks at it, has to look at it? Maybe. I don't think it will come in these next few games, though, because I've said it's Palace away who we'll come on to in a bit, but they're leaking a lot of goals. They're in a major transitional moment.

13:48Stuart Watson:Then it's Everton away. a lot of grumblings about the transfer business or lack of it up there at the new stadium that's not quite been made the fortress yet for them and then post-international break Fulham at home who I think we all discussed maybe post-Marco Silva losing a lot of experienced players taking a bit of a calculated risk on Arbolora and Real Madrid players zero points so far at Portman Road These next three games are ones for Ipswich to go and attack and believe in the good stuff that they've done so far. I was looking through a lot of the stats today for the Premier League. Nciso is right up there in terms of various numbers about receiving the ball between the lines and winning fouls.

14:38Stuart Watson:Fatou is leading the way in terms of successful dribbles. Palacios in the very small sample size we've had so far Produced some really good numbers So at the moment I think Gary O 'Neill has to keep sticking with this no fear philosophy Of we're not here to be little lips which are make up the numbers Is what Mark Ashton said in the summer They're going to give it a go And you can be left with regrets by trying things for too long as we've just discussed on the flip side of it if you don't really go for it in the early stages you can still easily lose games of football trying to be safe in the Premier League and then you can be left wondering well did we give ourselves the best chance there if we're just trying to stay in a game for 60 minutes and nick it at the end you can end up losing that anyway so if you've spent all that money if you think you've given yourself some really good attacking weaponry let's let's really sort of test that out and see how far it can take them um there might be a different conversation so many games in but not now not for me no definitely not and well hopefully next week

15:47Ross Halls:won't be having a conversation oh no here we go again like my words my one word to sum up the open three games is sort of mindful um because you know it's still very early days you've seen lucky we're not Coventry at the moment Coventry are as AJ is always referencing they are they are pretty much town from two years ago. Kept a core, signed a few. Obviously, got the manager there playing the football and they lost all their three games so far. But it's really mindful. We went to Old Trafford, went toe-to-toe for them for most of that game and then just a free 10 minutes. And then Liverpool, just 10 minutes, just where we just cut apart by a really good forward line.

16:27Ross Halls:And the Zach, unfortunately, was in form. But one thing I'm a bit worried about, I think some people are getting too overconfident about that. I know, as you mentioned, Stu, they're in transition. And maybe because I'm just fresh off just chatting to a Palace fan, they've still got a very good team. Like, I keep forgetting they've still got Adam Wharton, who is an incredible midfielder. And we'll get on to Palace very shortly. But the next few games are massive, boys. And what's your thoughts as a whole on the Premier League? You know, in terms of any teams that surprised you? Like, whole city, of course.

17:01Ross Halls:They're still unbeaten. they're currently in the top four so having conceded a goal yeah so was that surprised you

17:08Stuart Watson:still a little bit of course it has yeah no one would have no one would have said that would they going into the season a lot of people were you know had written them off uh with varying degrees of respectability um and i guess they are the antithesis the counter argument to how you should approach it in the premier league as a newly promoted side they've gone you know full-on back five, deep block, nicked goals from set pieces. And they've given themselves a real platform now, haven't they? With, what, seven points chalked off already towards that magic 40-point marker. How sustainable is that over the course of a 38-game season?

17:54Stuart Watson:Is there a bit of a surprise factor that will soon go with them? I don't know. There's different ways of going about it, isn't there? Leeds are another argument for being a bit more pragmatic. Last season, midway through the season, they were struggling. Farker switch tactics went to a 3-5-2, and it worked out nicely for them, and they survived quite comfortably. Sunderland went for it. They spent big, like Ipswich, recruited from across the globe, 4-2-3-1, Xhaka pulling the strings. Brobby, Powerhouse up front, and they qualified for Europe. So Ipswich believe in themselves that they can do something similar.

18:39Stuart Watson:All the talk was aiming for 17th is defeatist. We have to think bigger than that. Three games in and two defeats to United and Liverpool shouldn't be enough to wildly swing you away from that thought process and those principles. it might be a different discussion after these next three games. These are the ones that will truly kind of be a marker of how competitive this Ipswich Town team is for this division, I think.

19:10Ross Halls:Yeah, of course. We've got a nice little home tie against the Premier League champions in the Carabao Cup as well in the middle of all that. So games, games, games. AJ, your Dark Horses leads, wasn't it? So thoughts on them? Yeah, my Dark Horses, which you weren't allowing, in Spurs are doing Spurs. So, yeah. Maybe they really are dark horses after all. To go down. Yeah. Well, yeah. Leeds, solid. Just really solid again. It's just a continuation. And I think that there's kind of this crop of mid-tably teams now who have learned the best way of approaching it, be that because of financial rules or just because it's best for them, is just get your team, make them solid, and build on that.

19:59And Leeds are a really good example of that. They've had a win against Forest, actually two if you count the Cup. They've gone and got a really good point against Brentford, a good result at Brighton. They never get anything at Brighton. There was a stat there that scored at Brighton in about 10 hours or something ridiculous. They obviously had that mental Cup game last night. They were 2-0 up at Stamford Bridge, lost at 6-3. Weird, but yeah. So yeah, I think that they're solid, and I think that will lead them to a really respectable league position. And just a couple of others to touch on. Brentford, really impressed by them.

20:33I think I've fallen in love with Brentford just in terms of everything that they do. I think it's great the way they run. I think that the management's really good and impressed by Keith Andrews. And again, another team that just keep all their players and then they just go, well, we'll just put 40-odd million on a really fantastic midfielder. And there's our team. It's really good. and the surprise package I'll actually mention not surprise package necessarily but the team I thought would be terrible and have actually been quite good apart from Hull Newcastle, I just thought the vibes were so far off with Newcastle post-Hal everything that happened in pre-season, the fact that Eddie Hull left during pre-season the transfer market the way they were beaten to all these players they go and they just go and sign they get this 38 year old manager who's managing in Saudi Arabia, some German guy no idea he was and it turns out actually he's quite good and he's really charismatic and he can win games of football and put in really good performances against Liverpool and they drew against Bournemouth and beat Spurs away from home.

21:35So yeah, credit to them and it just shows again how hard this division is. We're talking about teams that Ipswich might be looking to be in and around a Newcastle, a Hull, a Leeds, a Brentford who've all looked really impressive at the start of the season. So yeah, that's the nature of the beast.

21:52Ross Halls:I think one thing I like about the Premier League this year I think it's just, it's so open I think which is hopefully will benefit us a little bit but as I said there was like leagues in its own you know in the Premier League, you know top six were just going to run away with it mid-table were just solid and then you just the three that went up went straight back down this time around I think it's just so open I hope that's done I hope that we're kind of past that point now and I think that the new financial rules will change things with SCR isn't it squad cost ratio coming in, which will benefit the newly promoted sides.

22:25I know that teams like Villa and Newcastle hate it, absolutely hate it, but it will probably create a more level playing field, maybe less so at the very top of the division, but more in terms of teams like Ipswich, like Coventry, like Hull coming in, being able to spend strength in squads. And I just hope it's going to create a more entertaining product because although I talk a lot about Ipswich needs to finish above Hull and Coventry, their teams, I think, will go down and Ipswich need to be above them. It is also a case that for enjoying the product of Premier League football, you want the teams that come up to do well and to be able to establish and other teams to go down and for it to be a cycle rather than just having yo-yoing all the time.

23:05So I hope we're past that point. And of course, I hope that Ipswich can prove that we're past that point as well.

23:11Ross Halls:Near Palace, of course, they used to be that sort of yo-yo club, but they're one of those where people would always predict them to go down and they've stayed in the Premier League for a while have gone on to win the FA Cup, won the conference league, playing, you know, Europa League now, which of course town, that is one thing we'd love to do. We're obviously playing that after the Sunderland win. We're like, yeah, okay, we're going to go here, we're going to go there. And then the two games afterwards followed. Stu, shall we segue then? On the Eagles, the trip to Selhurst Park. As I say, I think people are getting too overconfident about this one.

23:42Ross Halls:I know they're not at a great start, of course, their left back had to score their goals at Fulham on the weekend. and they did just beat Borough 3-0 in the Carabao Cup with a changed team. I know Borough changed their team as well. Yeah, open thoughts.

23:57Stuart Watson:Yeah, I don't know if we can read too much into that midweek game. By all accounts, Borough were very good for the first half an hour or so of that game and 3-0 maybe wasn't a fair reflection. Both teams made eight changes to that game. So I don't know if there's much learning to be taken from that. I watched their game against Fulham in full, and both teams looked really poor defensively. It was a wide open game. The scoreline could have been anything. Palace ultimately managed to come away from it with a win. but reading, listening to Palace fans there is some concern about their transition after the unthinkable highs that they've had over the last two years under Oliver Glasner you've touched upon it, FA Cup, Community Shield and then Conference League winners all in the space of a year is remarkable but that team is very different to the team that Ipswich faced two years ago.

25:08Stuart Watson:It was two 1-0 defeats to Palace, wasn't it, that season? And they were... AJ mentioned about being sort of starry-eyed and I think there was a bit of naivety in the 22 years away of coming to the Premier League. We knew the big boys were going to be good. But what we may be underestimated is what the likes of a Palace and those kind of mid-table teams, just how experienced and big and streetwise they were. And Palace were, you know, summed that up, really. But that team has changed a lot. Eze left last summer, Gay left in January, Lacroix and Munoz have both left this summer. You've got Mateta, who was trying to rip up his contract.

25:51Stuart Watson:He's injured at the moment. You've got Saar, who was on the verge of going to Liverpool, and the manager says, well, he's still kind of coming to terms with that at the moment. He is also injured. at the moment and unavailable. So if there's a time, you know, it's a very different Palace to the one that Ipswich played two years ago. That's not to underestimate what they still are and the players they've got. You've mentioned Adam Wharton, of course, and Mitchell on the left. And I think one or two of their signings have looked pretty handy so far. But, you know, this is a test. Have Palace regressed enough and have Ipswich progressed enough?

26:31Stuart Watson:I think there's been elements of both of those what that sort of looks like on Saturday will be very interesting to see

26:39Ross Halls:Yeah, and it's going to be interesting to see what Gary O 'Neill does with Team AJ what's your early thoughts on Palace start to the season so it's going to Southhurst Park I think that's what worries me if this was a home game I'd be well up for I think yeah we can definitely get a result I still think we can potentially get a result at Southhurst Park but away from home is going to be very different yeah for starters i like a lot about crystal palace i think that pierre sage is very french is my main observation he's in a very similar boat to regis labris at sunderland and then just just how french they are very french um but tactically i think that he's tried to go with more continuity from what glasner was doing it's still a three four two one formation um and obviously i I think there was a lot of concern around some of the transfer business over the summer.

27:27And then it gets to now and you look at them and they go, well, they have actually kept Saar and they have kept Mateta. I know Mateta's injured. I think Saar's had an issue as well, but they're both still at the club. And then it got to the end of the window and actually the business they were doing towards the end, having caused a lot of concern initially among fans, was really good. And you look at Kalayli coming in, really talented right wing back who's replaced Munoz. De Sassi, who was kind of one of the big figures behind West Ham not being as terrible in the second half of last season. They've got Ben Chilwell and the experience that he brings there.

28:02Dario Osorio is someone I've tipped town to go for because I think he's a fantastic player. Quinton Timber, brother of the other Timber at Arsenal, another really experienced head that's kind of bringing into the middle who's done a lot playing in European football and it just feels like a very solid side with already that kind of nice core that they've got there with Wharton, with Mitchell, with Jeremy Pino, with other players like that. Dean Henderson. And you talk about...

28:27Stuart Watson:Strand Larsen was 40, 50 million, wasn't he? Yeah. So, yeah, we shouldn't sleep on the players that are in these type of Premier League teams. Yeah, there's a lot of quality within these teams, not just in the teams, but also within the benches as well. And to go back to the other point you were saying, how does that compare with Ipswich? I just think it does feel more level now, doesn't it? with a lot of these games. And we kind of looked at, the Liverpool game is a good example where we sat in the press box and we actually said, who has the most match winners on the bench? And I know, okay, look, Liverpool were pretty comfortable winning that game.

28:59But actually, when you looked at kind of the players you could bring on to change a game, impact a game, win a game, it was fairly level in terms of those kind of players. And I just think that's an indication as to where the squads are going to be. I think when you see the two team sheets, you're not going to have that same kind of effect that we had in the last Premier League season. where we looked at the bench and said, they can bring on a£40 million striker. They can bring on this£30 million, 80 international cap winger or something like that to go and win the game. Because actually when you look through them, what Ipswich have available to them, it feels more balanced now.

29:34So yeah, it's going to be an interesting kind of benchmark, as Stu says. How does this compare from where we were a couple of years ago? And it felt that Palace were just kind of this team that were comfortably ahead in everything that they had. Yeah, I think it's going to look a little bit different this time.

29:48Ross Halls:We have more big boys now, don't we? When we come up against Aston, they're the big boys. We're looking up, and now it's matching, which is good.

29:55Stuart Watson:I remember looking at that Palace back three when they came to Portman Road in the first part of the season. It was an evening game, wasn't it? It would have been Gaye, Lacroix. Who was the third one, AJ? Remind me. The back line that day would have been Gaye, Lacroix, and Shalaba, actually. Shalaba, yeah. Yeah, and that was, you know, that was looked at not just them, but there were other games as well with Fulham when Traore was on the touchline in front of us and Everton that were just big, experienced players. And it was, oh, OK, this is what the Premier League's about. And that was the main learnings for Ipswich, wasn't it?

30:37Stuart Watson:And I think their recruitment has obviously tried to address those two things, experience and athleticism and hopefully it's a little bit more of an even playing field this time. We've seen sort of a brief comparison with Sunderland on the opening day and that being a really sort of competitive even game that Ipswich managed to nick at the end. I think this could be something similar. You just talked about the benches. I note that Palace were able to leave Dwight McNeil out of their squad. Gessand, who's on loan from Villa last time around, Pierre Sarge said that he wasn't happy with the way that they contributed off the bench in a 4-1 defeat at Man City, so he left them out of the subsequent matchday squad to kind of shake them up a little bit and see if he gets a reaction from them.

31:26Stuart Watson:That gives you an idea of the depth that Palace have still got.

31:33Stuart Watson:We're still learning a lot about where this team is at. and we're learning a lot about how Gary O 'Neill is going to address this season. But, yeah, I've managed to kind of put United and Liverpool in the rearview mirror quite quickly, really, and still feeling quite positive going into these three. It might be naive. We might be sat here in a few weeks' time or in the international break going, yeah, the Prem is still super hard and there's a lot of work to do. I don't know. But equally, I can see Ipswich going there. no fear factor taking it on and hopefully you know I think of these next three games if you can win one of those three which I think is very doable and I don't know where or when it will come I think I'd take that six points from from the first six uh anything else on top of that would would be a bonus just just keep that points tally ticking over make sure you're kind of in in the right you know giving yourself a chance as the game's game slip by this is going to be a really unique tactical battle as well, I think.

32:36This is going to be, again, Ipswich coming up against a back five, and I think that they're a bit of a dying art in the Premier League if you go through, that there's probably, what, four or five teams now that will consistently play a back five, and they are very different, I think, for preparing for games like that. How do you deal with making sure that your attack is varied enough to be able to get through a back three? And we're talking about centre-backs here in Richard, 6 '2", in De Sassi, 6 '3", in Canvo, 6 '2", who are still going to be those kind of big physical boys. You're talking about that midfield two of Wharton and Timber that feels really solid to have there.

33:15You think about how attacking those wing-backs are because Kalayli almost plays as a winger and Mitchell scored two goals in that game against Fulham with how high he was pressing and how much he was able to exploit that kind of right side of Fulham and thinking about how the two 10s drift. There's a lot of very different tactical ideas and there are so many teams now that play a 4-3-3, a 4-2-3-1. And I think that it's going to be really interesting to me to see how Gary O 'Neill sets up for a different test where you're going to want to still be solid. You're still going to want to express yourself on the ball and attack, but you're then playing a team that kind of is going to be very different because they are a back five, because they will want to attack with width and speed on the counter and they will have three forwards and three centre-backs.

34:05Yeah, fascinated by how that's going to look.

34:07Ross Halls:Ben Shearwell, of course, came off the bench and scored. He replaces Tyrone Mitchell and left back, scoring the goal. But yeah, as you said, Stu, that game was just so wide open. I don't think it'll be in this one. Team?

34:21Stuart Watson:They're conceding goals, Ross. I've looked at it. Crystal Palace have conceded two or more goals in their last nine Premier League games, which is an unwanted club record for them. Granted, they've played Man City in two of those matches, but that goes back to this season, conceded two to Fulham, four to Man City and two to Everton. And in the back end of last season, Arsenal two, Brentford two, Man City three, Everton two, Bournemouth three, Liverpool three. So that's 23 goals in nine games. When you lose, yes, they've still got big centre-halves in there. Yes, they've still got some experience and big transfer fees, but the level of player they've lost, you know, Gaye, England centre-half who's gone on to Man City, Eze, what he's gone on to do for Arsenal, these are top-level players that they've lost, and there is going to be a drop-off.

35:22Stuart Watson:So I'm kind of trying to balance it between being sort of humble enough to know that they have been a very successful, relatively Premier League side in recent times and they've still got good players. But Ipswich, you know, I'm with Gary O 'Neill, so it shouldn't be going there scared of these sort of games anymore. They should go there and believe in themselves because they've got a World Cup winner in midfield who looked really good last Friday. They've got Nciso who's looked, you know, really good in the first few games. It's an opportunity. I don't want to overplay it, but it's an opportunity for Upswich.

35:59Ross Halls:It is. Do you think he will start Zion Fleming or do you think Emerson will continue starting on top? It's going to be interesting.

36:07Stuart Watson:Well, as I said earlier, if we're getting into the sort of starting XI debate, I can't see a change in formation for this one for all the reasons that I've just outlined. I think they'll believe in what they're trying to do and they'll want to get as many attacking players on the pitch as possible to pose a threat to Palace. I think that probably is the only real area up for debate going into this game is a striker. I think Emerson deserved his chance to go again against Liverpool last weekend, allied with the fact that Fleming had had quite an emotionally draining deadline day move late on the Tuesday, just a few days before.

36:45Stuart Watson:But now, sort of a week in, Fleming's got that Premier League experience. talked about Emerson being a project is it time to sort of dip him out and put the slightly more oven ready Zian Fleming into the team I think that's probably the way I'm leaning I would ask AJ but I know exactly of course he's going to back his boy Zian yeah Zian Fleming should start this one

37:15Ross Halls:end of conversation there we go

37:16Stuart Watson:any other areas up for debate for you boys so I think this is spoiling my team selection I think this is the only change that will be made to be honest but I think that there are areas up for debate the back line is an interesting one and I think it's going to be a debate that will just rumble on and rumble on and rumble on do you take Jacob Greaves out, do you move Diop over, do you go with Wattara at right back we haven't seen Wattara play a single second at right back but he's played left back but does O 'Neill actually fancy him in midfield we still don't really know but I think it is a possibility.

37:50Midfield, I think will be Lukic and Palacios, but there definitely has been more of a clamour I've seen for bringing Florentino in. I've seen a few people asking could they get all three in and change the system to have kind of a flat midfield three. So Florentino sitting behind Palacios and Lukic, not for this one, I don't think. But I do wonder where Florentino might come in. I would see it at some point happening. And then the attacking line is interesting. I can't see again past it being Fatou and Nciso. dies in minor this is then the an interesting kind of discussion to have i guess where um he has done a lot of good stuff off the ball his pressing his speed but there's no denying that his impact in games has been fairly minimal aside from a few brief flashes and the shot at old trafford i can't remember too much that he's done do you pivot towards going for a jack clark who's maybe had a little bit more of an impact but that is off the bench personally i'd want to stick with Maida because I would worry about what you'd lose off the ball.

38:49And I think the balance of going with Maida as the starter to run and press and do all of those things that he does so well, and then having Clark to take on tired legs works as a better balance.

38:59Stuart Watson:I agree, especially when we're talking about Palace's main threats coming down the flanks with their wing-backs. And Kaleili, as you say, is very attack-minded, has made a very good start to the season. And I think, yes, we want to see Dajamid have more of an impact on the ball in the final third. But off the ball, he worked so hard. And I think him and Leaf have actually, I think he's helping bring the best out of Leaf as well at the moment. So, yeah, I can't see that being a change. It will be very interesting when Jadon Filagene is kind of back in the mix. And certainly when he's back up to full speed, because I think he can, And I think he's obviously we know his sort of technical footballing ability and his ability to score goals and make things happen.

39:46Stuart Watson:But I think he's got a bit more, you know, I think he has got the potential to be a very good off the ball player as well in terms of pressing and intercepting and doing all of those things. But that's probably a debate for another day because he's he might he might be back involved. We'll find out a bit more at the press conference, but certainly not to the degree of going into a starting 11 at this stage. The midfield three thing is interesting. I guess that would, you know, Leeds again is a reference to that sort of flat midfield three slash five. Because, you know, we had this debate, didn't we, in pre-season about if they sign Palacios, what's the midfield two going to look like?

40:28Stuart Watson:And, you know, AJ, you said actually at the start, well, is there enough defensiveness amongst Palacios Palacios and Lukic. Lukic, who's a kind of more of a, he's halfway between a six and an eight. He's a ball carrier. He likes to drive. He likes to do a bit of everything in the game. Palacios, very similar. He's got bite to him, but he's, you know, chiefly he's a creator as well. Do they need an insurance policy, an out-on-out defensive shield, kind of just sitting behind them? Florentino just herring around and making interceptions, or Matasiwa still to come back into the mix as well. Is the gain you get from that worth the sacrifice of a forward player?

41:14Stuart Watson:And then if you do go 3-5-2, what does the two look like? Is it, Nciso has to be in this team, as far as I'm concerned. He can play almost as a second striker. So you could play him just off of a Fleming or an Emerson. but that leaves no chair at the table for Fatou or Maeda potentially. Fatou could play right wing back. I'm not sure that that's his best role in a team but there's always a trade-off with these things, isn't there, when we're talking about back threes and midfield threes. You could go to more of a 4-3-3 or like a 4-1-4-1 and stick with the back four and then I suppose... And it's always a debate then where you think about all the attacking talent.

42:02Well, someone has to come out. And I've spoken a bit before about if it's going to be anyone, I'd imagine it would be Fatou would be the most likely. And I like the idea as well about bringing a fully ready-to-go Fatou off the bench in some games and having that kind of pace and energy and dribbling. But then you'd look at maybe doing a 4-3-3 and you'd have to put and see so on the right. Does that take him out of his best position? Is he going to have the same kind of impact, especially where he's going to want to come narrow? Is that going to leave a void on the side? It's a very tricky balance to find, I think, with these different formations.

42:36But, yeah, that's going to be the kind of internal battle that Gary O 'Neill is going to have, the changes you can make to make this Ipswich team more solid. And if you are, what is it going to do to other parts of the pitch? Are you going to jeopardise what you can do in the final third? Are you going to be too open at the back? Yeah, as we both said, I don't think that we're going to be seeing that now. I probably don't think we're going to be seeing that at Everton either. I have no reason to doubt that Leif Davies, when he spoke to me after United and said, we've hardly played in a back five at all.

43:06We've not really done any work in a back five. I don't have any reason to doubt that. International breaks can be different. But yeah, until then, at least, I don't think we're going to have any sort of quite strong, significant changes until then.

43:18Stuart Watson:They might trial it. They might use the Arsenal Cup game next Tuesday to give it a trial and just have a look at it. but they've got very limited preparation time for that one quick turnaround from Palace. It will be a much-changed team, you would imagine. So are you really learning too much if it's not the players that you've got it in mind for, for league games? I don't know, but they may as well have a little look at it, see what the principles of it, how they pan out. Ultimately, it might be something that kind of forces the hand. Sometimes in football, people almost, for all of the preparation and analysis and everything that goes into it.

43:53It's amazing how sometimes you stumble across things

43:57Stuart Watson:out of necessity sometimes. It might be that somebody picks up an injury and then you think, well, I don't know, say it was in CISO, for example, picks up an injury and then you think, well, I haven't got to worry too much about now dropping him, so maybe what I've got at my disposal fits this system better and then you play it and then it gets a result and you stick with it. or it might just be a result. They might go somewhere, get battered and that forces the hand a little bit. So we will see, won't we? It's fascinating times. As I say, we're learning so much about this team.

44:34Ross Halls:Yeah, we are. And Gary Newell's got a bit of a headache though when players are coming back fit. You know, he's left out some sort of big hitters and, you know, I'm looking at the team, the players that are out of the squad last time around, obviously Alex Palmer, Jack Taylor, Hazor Matatiwa, Anastasia Metty, Jalen Philogene, Sindra, Waleh Gellion, Chubac Pond. So, you know, when they all say when Jalen is really fit, who are you going to drop instead? You know, are you going to drop Jack Clark, Casey McAteer? It is another conversation for another day, but it is very interesting. And, you know, it's a long old season.

45:04Ross Halls:Injuries happen. And I said before, I don't know why. There's definitely a period where we get loads of illnesses. Players just get ill. And I'm thinking, they're bloody athletes. They shouldn't be getting ill. but you know bugs always hit and if they've got young kids and stuff you know you get ill i'm sure still you get ill because you know you know your daughter comes home and they bring the bugs and stuff so so yeah it's gonna be it's gonna be interesting that's my input on that fantastic conversation aj and stu just had um but boys big question prediction time i know we're recording this on thursday and is the press conference still to do but we've got we've got to have it on record.

45:43Ross Halls:At the moment, the cyborg, the AI, is leading the way. We all obviously got it incorrect for the Liverpool game, so no one got any points, even the first goal scorer, because there was no goal scorer, of course, for town. AJ, we'll start with you, mate. Thank you very much. Just to also check, I can do, if we want to on this, I can do the AI one. If you want me to do it on the pod, I feel like Mark Keith might have me shocked for doing it. but he's away so I can do it we'll do that one at the end as I said that's good to have at the end my prediction for this one I've gone with a 2-2 draw I think goals I think that Ipswich are going to want to go for it I think a full week on the training pitch would have helped them I think it will be beneficial to look at the positives from the last couple of games I think they'll come in rejuvenated but I still have question marks over the defence.

46:43And when I look at the players that Palace have, as much as I think that they're open and can be got at, I think it's the same for Ipswich. And I think that Palace have a lot of quality to get at Ipswich as well. So I'm going for goals. I'm going for a draw. I'm going for a 2-2. And my first goal scorer in this one, I'm going to go with him again. I'll back him again. He's done absolutely nothing to warrant this so far. But again, same kind of thought. I think Kaleili, I don't know how to pronounce it. the Palace right wing back will press high and I think that could leave some space for Dyson Maida to get his first Ipswich Town goal.

47:15Maida, 2-2.

47:17Ross Halls:Oh, I like that. Yeah, he's going to be coming up against also a Japanese friend, isn't he? In Kamada. So I'm sure the Japanese journalist will be rubbing it hands saying we've got two Japanese players to cover. I know Liverpool had Indo, didn't they, as well in the last game? So they've been enjoying the last few games. So 2-2. Stu, what do you reckon, my friend? Are you going to back a Town win?

47:39Stuart Watson:I also had 2-2 in my mind just because of the Palace record of conceding two or more goals that I've already outlined. The fact that I think Ipswich are kind of going for it and I think are going to try and deploy their attacking talent. I don't like doing the same scoreline. It's not fun, is it? Now, I was in this position last weekend for the Friday game and I had a draw in mind and everyone went for draws and I thought, oh, I'll differentiate. And I was, my heart said, oh, I hope Switch can win it. And my head said, I should really go for a defeat. And I don't know how I feel about this one, to which way to tip it.

48:23Stuart Watson:Because I've been quite positive in this chat, haven't I, for most of this podcast. And I feel it's such a got goals in them. But then I still look at that Palace team and it is at Selhurst Park. and with a heavy heart, I'll go Palace 2-1, just to be different. I did have 2-2 in my mind, but I'll go Palace 2-1. As always, I hope I'm wrong. And even if they lose this game, but they play well and they give it a real good goal, I won't be too downhearted because there'll be other opportunities. But I'll lock it in, 2-1, and I'll go first goal scorer. just because it will make Alex very upset if I get this and he doesn't I'll go with Zian Fleming There you go

49:13Ross Halls:You get 10 points for that Stu if he scores No I don't know My hot take as well boys I hate to say it I bet there's been an injury during this week That's just my random hot take You love a random hot take Yeah just in the training and they've worked too hard and someone has pulled something.

49:36Stuart Watson:That's your fault if that happens.

49:39Ross Halls:I'm sorry about that. Or do I have some insight? Maybe. Anyway, my prediction, I'm not going to predict a win. I would love that to happen and I hope it does happen. But I'm going to go for a draw as well. We're talking about there's going to be loads and loads of goals and it's just going to be a drab, like, goalless draw or a 1-0 win for someone. I'm going to go 1-1. that is my go-to prediction at the moment and he's getting closer and closer he needs a goal and Julio and Cisou he needs to do something and when I was speaking to a Palace fan he was worried about him so I'm going to add an extra bit of worry for that Palace fan Julio and Cisou to score maybe Palace will open the score and then we equalise and we're both trying to fight at the end but we just couldn't get over the line so a 1-1 draw and we'll find out Heathie's prediction shortly hopefully he's not gone on holiday just yet and he'll just ignore all our messages.

50:33Ross Halls:Hopefully we can get his predictions and then we'll go from there. But AJ, the Cyborg, who will most likely get it right, what are they saying? So the Cyborg has given me a lot of information behind the reasoning here. The prediction from AI is Crystal Palace 2, Ipswich Town 1. So it's taken the shit and it's also picked the striker to be the Ipswich goalscorer, but they've gone with Emerson first goal scorer. I'm not going to read out everything that comes with this one, but essentially the thought process it has is, I could see this being 1-1 for a very long time before Palace nick it late. That's probably my biggest concern with the prediction.

51:14One thing I don't expect is another 5-2 type game. O 'Neill's had a couple of weeks to work on the defensive structure, and Ipswich are considerably more controlled against Liverpool, despite conceding twice very early. So that is the AI. It's gone with a 2-1 Ipswich defeat, and Emerson is the first goal scorer. It's even done some Palace goalscorers for me. It's even gone with Yereby Pino and Jürgen Strand-Larsen to bag the winner. There you have it.

51:38Ross Halls:That's going to happen, isn't it? Strand-Larsen scored against us, didn't he, for Wolves last time, I remember rightly. Or was it? No, for Palace. Was he the goalscorer when we lost against him at home? Well, he joined Palace in January. I am at Heta, yeah. But as well as Strand-Larsen scored against us as well, maybe for Wolves. Who knows? It was a long, old season that one. Yeah, it was. yeah but yeah that was yeah we'll see if AI gets it right I think we should be quite concerned there's obviously been a lot of alarming stuff coming out about AI recently as well so yeah as far as aware AI will probably get this right it will be a 2-1 defeat for it which Emerson will score and then it will kill us all

52:20Stuart Watson:he did score Stran last and he got the winner at Portman Road for Walls Ross so your memory didn't let you down

52:25Ross Halls:so remember he did the celebration didn't he with the glasses yes that's right

52:29Stuart Watson:Yeah.

52:29Ross Halls:Yeah. So there we go. But no, the thing with AI though, they're just basically picking up all your stories, aren't they really? And they're just all the different stories that you've written and tactical stuff. So they're cheating really. So I just want to take it. But they've gone with Stu's prediction. That's what they've done as well. They're listening to this podcast. And they go, oh, same prediction as Stu, just going to chase the score. I did do it before Stu answers. So there's no accusations of spying. we're not Southampton here. It's all right. Yes. But yes, it's gone with the two undefeated as well.

53:05Ross Halls:Okay. We shall see then. We'll of course share those predictions and hear what he's got to say. But boys, thank you for joining me. This has gone on longer than planned actually the podcast. We're trying to make a nice tight 45 minutes, but we're getting close to the hour, but any other business, do you want to mention anything you've been working on? And yeah, anything else?

53:25Stuart Watson:No, I don't think so. No other business. all the usual on the websites you know the score by now k away subscribe thank you please

53:34Ross Halls:yes yeah a lot of people have been showing me actually the the app it went in person again i love the app ross and i'm like great yeah keep plugging it and telling people about it even someone one of the photographers in the photographer's room on saturday or friday against um liverpool is saying oh how's the app going and stuff and i haven't downloaded it yet and I was like, well, I showed him everything. I think you were there, Stu, weren't you? Good old Jerry. So, yeah, KOA, website and app, everybody. AJ, anything about business from you? I was like, blah, blah, blah, blah. Games, games, games, festive games.

54:08They've been announced. Who wants the festive games? Boxing Day is staying the same. We have actually got Boxing Day. Last time in the Premier League, they just binned it all off, basically. Ipswich will stay Saturday 3 on Boxing Day, which is very nice indeed. Who's that again? again uh that game is against brentford on boxing day uh exciting we have had a couple of changes with the time home don't worry ross we don't have to worry about getting into london um wednesday the 30th that game at home to chelsea that's another quarter past eight kickoff 8 15 on sky sports do you remember we had that for the arsenal game uh at the emirates uh a couple of years ago it's going to be the same kind of kickoff home to Chelsea.

54:50And then the only other one that's been moved is the commentary game on the 6th of January that was scheduled for 8. It's now scheduled for half 7. So there you go. There's your festive football. And I think we're due a few more fixture changes to come in the next fortnight or so for the rest of the year.

55:10Ross Halls:I like a Boxing Day game. I know sometimes it is nice. When you finish your Christmas day and you can sort of wake up. and I know it was somewhat nice not having it last time, but Boxing Day is all about football, isn't it? Definitely at home, if you're away. We had to go to Millwall last year, didn't we? And that was rubbish. This time around, Brentford, that should be a good game at Porter Road. So bring it on, boys. Well, Stu, AJ, thanks for joining me. Thanks, everyone, for listening to the latest KOA podcast sponsored by Molecular UK. Ross Halls is joined by Stuart Watson and Alex Jones to look ahead to Ipswich Town’s trip to Crystal Palace.

The boys start by dissecting the season so far - the good stuff, the concerning stuff, and one-word summaries of what we’ve seen.

Then it’s on to the big game against Crystal Palace, discussing what to expect at Selhurst Park as the Blues target a big away win.

There’s also some chat around team selection and tactics, plus the upcoming international break and the festive fixture announcement.
