In short

This inaugural “The Couch Hang” episode is a real-time, biweekly chat between co-hosts Layla and Megan Day about early postpartum life, sleep deprivation, and what motherhood feels like when you’re not “pretending to be perfect.” Key claims include: postpartum memory is harder because lack of sleep prevents retention; sleep schedules shift quickly week to week; and hosting/meal-train help can be easier than leaving the house while bleeding and in pajamas. Layla (3 weeks postpartum) says her main obstacle is sleep (baby waking 2–4am), but she’s noticed physical “bounce back” and improved hosting capacity. Megan shares she has two daughters, kids close in age to Layla’s, and discusses “naked mom” vs private-body boundaries, including kids naming anatomy and showering practices.

Notable examples

a rough night with baby crying 2–4am; meal-train drop-offs; and planning for a “mother’s helper” after a homeschool sitter leaves for college.

Guests

Megan Day (mom friend, wife, Christian; podcaster; two daughters; met Layla via Instagram).

0:00Laila:Welcome to The Couch Hang, where nobody cleaned their house and we're popping a squat on the couch, talking about motherhood as we're living in it. So if you're in the thick of it and just want a friend who gets it, this is for you. Stay tuned every other week on top of the normal Learning to Mom podcast episodes as it's all in real time. Because I batch record everything else a year in advance, so this is where you get what's actually going on with us right now. Come hang. Hello and welcome to the very first episode of The Couch Hang. I will share all about what that is and what that means for Learning to Mom podcast.

0:41Laila:I'm so excited, but let me first introduce the co-host of The Couch Hang, one of my very best friends, my mom friend, who I lovingly and dearly refer to her and as well we refer to this as each other as our couch friends meaning it's the type of friend where we don't clean our house before the other person comes over and we just pop a squat on the couch no makeup no pretending to be perfect and we're just couch friends if that makes any sense so let me introduce you to my couch friend and your soon-to-be couch friend, Megan Day.

1:24Meghan:Hey, guys. I'm so excited to be here. I literally cannot believe it. It's about time that you and I are on a mic together consistently. Let's be honest. It's about time.

1:39Laila:My phone is going to be thrilled. It's going to be like, I can stop listening to these 30-minute voice memos between these women and the microphone. So Layla's laptop and microphone can handle it.

1:52Meghan:Oh, yeah. No, Layla and I send each other voice memos like it's our job. And it's funny because we're both podcasters and we can't get enough of talking. And so we just send each other voice memos every day, explaining every single detail of our life that no one else cares about. But I'm like, I got to know what's going on.

2:13Laila:Always. Okay. Can you like, who are you?

2:17Meghan:Yeah, I'm. so I'm Megan and I am Layla's mom friend first and foremost. And secondly, I'm a wife and mother and a child of God and a child of God. Um, but yeah, it's so fun because Layla and I met on Instagram actually shout out to Maddie because she posted about Layla's podcast on her story. And then I followed Layla's podcast and then Layla sent me a message and I was like, Oh, we're local. And she's like, do you want to go on a walk? And I was like, sure. It was like the, craziest. And that's how you just mom friends. And that's how you make mom friends. It's not that hard. I mean, you just went for it.

2:55Meghan:And I said, sure. And we hit it off immediately. Like we were immediate best friends. There was no stopping us genuinely.

3:02Laila:No, it was one of those full send full send.

3:05Meghan:It was fun because we're both podcasters. I'm on the podcast daily. Nothing's podcast. And so it's really fun to have that connection in our friendship as well. Cause it's a specific thing. Not everyone does this. So it's nice to be able to talk about the background side of things of podcasting. But yeah, I have two daughters. My oldest daughter is the same age as Layla's oldest daughter, which is so much fun. And yeah, it just keeps us going. And my second daughter is close in age to her second child. So it just, it's really fun that our kids are kind of like falling in line and we all get to be friends together.

3:45Meghan:It makes the hangs a lot easier because one thing about motherhood, just to get into it for a second, I know this is

3:51Laila:not the agenda. Get into it.

3:54Meghan:When you have kids that are different ages, even by a year in the younger years, it makes a really big difference. And I hate to say it, but when you have a six month old versus an 18 month old quote unquote playing together it's it doesn't work you guys I'm sorry it's really hard it's really hard and then like once all the kids get older it won't matter anymore right but those first few years to have kids that are actually the same age

4:26Laila:makes a world of difference amen I hate to say it no thank you for bringing that hard truth yes yes so the reason that the couch hang now exists everyone to get you caught up to speed yeah in a very not leila fashion instead of thinking about something for a year strategizing about it pre-launching it doing research on if it would be successful this all came about in like a matter of five days truly and voice memoing back and forth with megan and essentially this is going to be bi-weekly episodes not replacing learning to mom podcast episodes at all this is in addition a fun little blessing to your ears of two women that are very much in it with you um you're gonna love megan if you love the learn to mom podcast megan is our vibe.

5:24Laila:Okay. But I'm also really excited about it being in like real time, because if you're a long time listener of the learning to mom podcast, then you know that I batch record all of my episodes a year in advance. So it's really confusing when it's like, okay, Layla's postpartum on Instagram. But then in this episode, she's saying like at the time of this recording, I'm 38 weeks pregnant. And then the next week episode, she's 14 weeks pregnant. What is happening? So I'm really excited to be coming at you live with motherhood updates and just keeping it real, but also keeping motherhood joyful and fun.

6:06Meghan:So much fun. It's also nice to discuss things in real time because so many things are forgotten, especially very freshly postpartum because of the lack of sleep. Your brain doesn't physically store memories because you're not sleeping enough to retain them. So you just forget a whole bunch of stuff. And so it's nice to discuss in real time what's going on. So Layla, do you want to give me a real-time update about your postpartum right now?

6:34Laila:I would love to give you a real-time update on my postpartum. So at the time of this recording, three weeks postpartum and my biggest obstacle now is sleep until this point it's been kind of you're kind of going on adrenaline and I've now hit the mark of it's just like is there light at

6:54Meghan:the end of the tunnel you know you kind of the daily grind is yeah the accumulation of the lack

7:01Laila:of sleep like last night we had a rough night he was up from two to four just like yeah like Like crying and we couldn't figure it out. And we're taking turns getting up and taking turns, you know, throwing the pillow over our eyes and trying to sleep while the other one's dealing with it. And we're yelling at each other.

7:22Meghan:The whole thing.

7:23Laila:It's the accumulation of it, you know? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

7:28Meghan:I feel like, too, it's like sometimes the beginning, the babies are sometimes a little sleepier. And then they've been in the world a little longer. And they're like, oh, wait a minute. What's going on? And I feel like things just start to shift a few weeks in. And you're like, oh, oh, you're mad at the morning now. This is not so cute anymore. It's not as fun.

7:49Laila:It's not as fun. No, no.

7:51Meghan:But do you go to bed like early in hopes of getting more sleep? And then you have to get up with your toddlers? Like what's your schedule like right now? I know there's not a firm one, but what are your hopes for a night of sleep?

8:06Laila:okay well the other two were really lovely and and just yeah dumb layla fashion i was like this one is probably going to follow suit yes um so the other two what we did was we would like put baby down at like seven eight o 'clock and go to bed and that was huge but i don't know if it's just like the third kid where it's like the other two are going to bed at seven and truly that is our only time to like talk to each other so we just are not we're not ready to do that this time

8:39Meghan:around yeah totally um totally and then it's like baby's up and stimulated and then it's not a whole

8:46Laila:yeah yeah but i would i would still recommend that approach especially like first time

8:51Meghan:parents i don't know yeah it's just like i feel like going into it like my whole night is going to be 12 hours knowing i'm probably only going to actually sleep six of them but just starting early to try to get a few hours in before the chaos of the night begins. I feel like that's how my husband and I did it. It would be like, I go to bed early so I can get a few hours in. He kind of takes care of things later at night and then I'm up earlier and then he would leave in in the morning. It was kind of like how we did it.

9:22Laila:Okay. I actually, maybe I can start doing that of like, you do bedtime with the kids. I'm going to bed. Yeah.

9:29Meghan:And then be like, when up earlier in the morning it's like it's it's like your schedules have to be shifted almost that's how my second baby wouldn't sleep without being held up right so my husband and I literally had to take shifts sleeping like both of us could not be asleep at the same time because she had to be held to sleep a few later flat she would just start screaming and so like we really had to get to the rhythm of like it's seven o 'clock I need to go to bed get as many hours in as I can at 12 o 'clock now I'm gonna be on a shift while he can get some sleeping in it was just like a back and forth I would nurse he would take the baby and then I would take a shift downstairs to try to stay awake it was just a weird and every week would change a little that's the thing I feel like you and I were talking about the other day too is like things change so fast you get into a routine for a week and oh baby just changed everything so now we gotta try something out

10:28Laila:yeah or that goes back to work but that also continues like the whole first year as soon as you figure out this is their nap schedule it's like oh just kidding we're on we're dropping

10:40Meghan:we're on a new nap schedule correct and then oh a tooth is popping through everything the teeth never stop popping through i don't want to see that as a first time it's like oh teething one

10:52Laila:and done this is so hard and then it's like oh we're teething again oh and then oh another tooth

10:59Meghan:oh and now the molars no my second is well over two years old and we are still teething like we are still working on teeth and I cannot wait for that to be at all I'm sure she's excited about it to be done I I have to imagine it's it is sad you think about

11:19Laila:like a little baby they go through a lot i always think that i really think that like they have they go through some really uncomfortable things and they can't like talk about it they can't voice it no and like you're just supposed to suck it up cry yeah a bunch and then try to feel better there was something else about postpartum that i was gonna say oh yeah just how insane it is physically so like okay the sleep not doing great whatever moving on yeah okay yeah we can talk about the sleep all day it's nothing new nothing I think people are probably tired of hearing women complain about the lack of sleep anywho what is has been so amazing to me is how quickly my body has quote unquote bounced back like my stomach it's not like I'm in my clothes I'm not talking about bouncing back to my pre-pregnancy size but the bounce back of like I have I'm up off the couch and I'm not living in pajamas and no I'm like the third time around it's incredible because the especially the first time around I was in my pajamas I wasn't showering until I was like four weeks postpartum at least you were also going through something that most women don't

12:40Meghan:have to go like you're the medical things you were going through at the time made it a lot harder i

12:44Laila:think yes but also yeah i just i just also remember like the whole meal train thing so i've had a meal time praise god the biggest thing yeah but even then like the first and the second times i was like just do drop off like I love you but I don't want to see you yes because I'm like naked and

13:05Meghan:still bleeding and all this stuff and now this time come into my house let's let me talk to you someone it is different it is different and I yeah I feel like I had a a really good postpartum with my first second was a lot harder just because as a baby she had a lot more challenges and it was just like, I just remember like going into my second postpartum being like, Oh my gosh, my husband gets six weeks off. We are going to have the time of our lives. Like my toddler is like the best little thing of all time. I'm good. I know exactly what I'm doing. It went so well. The first time this is going to be incredible.

13:41Meghan:I am a great parent. And then you have a baby whose needs are not parentable. Like there's nothing I can do to help you like, except for be sleep deprived and hold you while you screw. Like it was just a lot of other things going on. I was like, Oh my God. It was like kind of crippling. And so it's funny, but I do think being around toddlers all day, you want to talk to an adult so bad previously. It's like, I could just watch reality TV and my fake friends are on the television. Now I can't do that. I literally can't do that. I little ears. I can't do that. I need, I need a friend to come in and have an actual adult discussion because if I have to talk like a toddler one more time, I'm going to lose my mind.

14:24Laila:I built the mom club for a really specific kind of mom, the one who's trying her absolute hardest and also trying not to lose herself in the process. The one who wants to do this thoughtfully, but is also so done feeling lonely in motherhood. If that sounds like you, I have news. You're already one of us. You just haven't walked through the door yet. There's a whole community of moms in there who feel like friends the second you meet them. 15:07Laila:It's in the show notes for you. I'll be right inside and I cannot wait to meet you.

15:12Meghan:There's something different. I have to imagine. I haven't gone through my third postpartum, but I have to imagine very different vibes.

15:19Laila:That was so spot on because one, yes, I feel most of the time I'm just like, please come in. You like you, you have to do a drop off. Are you sure? Like I've been looking forward to this all day. But I'll physically like get up and I feel that willing to welcome them into my house.

15:42Meghan:that is so new for me yeah yeah no you really I'm just like not getting off the couch because I'm just in the fog totally totally and I mean I came over like a week postpartum to your house I mean that doesn't say much because I know I know I'm not your couch friend but still you looked good you were doing okay you still had the capacity for me and my two crazy children to come over

16:09Laila:like no I don't know that's impressive to me that was pretty good yeah but it's not like I like I was inviting you over but I wasn't inviting anyone who I wouldn't be able to have a couch hang with

16:20Meghan:that's fair that is so fair we're at this point you're like who's bringing me my meal come on in

16:25Laila:we're hosting my mom's birthday on Saturday oh my god like cooking like I'm making homemade guac like I'm doing it on Saturday and my sister was like are you sure but in my mind hosting is easier than taking the three children out to someone else's house I was like yeah no I will be hosting thank you so much this is actually the option I would rather not have to put shoes on all the kids

16:49Meghan:like that step alone if I can prevent like would be right for me yes buckling them in the car seat I'd rather not just come to my house. Yes. Yeah. That is so real. That is so real.

17:04Laila:So that's been, yeah. Postpartum, the sleep deprivation. Have you seen this totally changes the topic? Oh, let's go. Have you seen the stuff on Instagram of people talking about if they were raised with a naked mom or a non-naked mom?

17:20Meghan:Yes, I have. It's such an interesting concept. something I really haven't thought about. But as my children are getting older, I'm like, okay, this is a decision that kind of needs to be made. Honestly.

17:34Laila:Are you just as they're getting older, because they have like questions are actually like aware. Do you still shower with? Yes.

17:41Meghan:No, I don't. Not my oldest. I don't really know. Now that there's two of them, I kind of have them shower together and I get it all done. It's not quite like, okay, it's just me. At this point, I can turn a show on in my bedroom and have the bathroom door open and feel good enough about my two watching TV the whole time while I shower that I don't really need to like have them be a part of the equation anymore. If that makes sense. Okay.

18:11Laila:That's a game changer. That's amazing. For sure. For sure. Yeah. That is amazing.

18:17Meghan:What about you? What's your, where are you at? I still shower with Myla. And I guess –

18:22Laila:Oh, shoot. I shouldn't have said that name. I still shower with the oldest. Okay. And that has been fine. Like nothing has been said. My husband does not. And he hasn't for a long time. Yeah. It feels really weird. Yeah. Whereas at this point, I could still shower with the almost two-year-old. But it's not – I probably wouldn't. Maybe once we get to like two and a half. I don't know. Because he's a different gender. Well, it's funny.

18:47Meghan:He has a different gender. you know what's so funny though so we've had the conversations with my kids about like

18:53Laila:naming the parts of the body by their name we use the names okay do you remember my daughter um my oldest telling your oldest that she was like yeah and you're like just a warning we've been talking about this I was like good to know we come out of the bathroom and she goes I heard my daughter tell your daughter that her dad has a P and I S and I was like, Oh,

19:18Meghan:okay. We're going there. Yes. My, so my situation is that my oldest doesn't care about that topic very much. She's not very interested. We don't discuss it very much though. She knows the anatomy and stuff. My youngest is very into it. She wants to talk about it. No, it's so on Brent. You guys have no idea. She, she's all about it. She wants to talk about it all the time. She's talking about her private area all the time. When we change her diaper, she's talking about it. My sister-in-law took her to the bathroom with her and she comes out and she looks at me. She's like, does my youngest know the name?

20:00Meghan:Or I was like, yes. And she's very into talking about it. and she has been and she was probably before too and my my second daughter was a very early talker so it just you're like is that going on like that's really going on in your mind it's coming out of your mouth and so even before she was two she was really getting into the business

20:22Laila:if that makes sense so is that the only time that back to the naked mom non-make it non-make yes I know we just talked about showering, but like, do you walk around your house naked or no?

20:36Meghan:No, I never really do. I don't really like to. It's not really been a thing for me. I just like to get dressed. I always.

20:43Laila:What's your mom, a naked mom?

20:46Meghan:No, very private. Like my, my youngest just said, talked about her private area to my mom. The other day she was like, what did she just say? Like, she was kind of like, oh my god I can't believe you've taught her that word you know that's kind of crazy and it's like it's not crazy but I feel like our generation of parents unless they were a naked mom we're like we're not we're not talking about that it was just not discussed really yes those areas

21:15Laila:of the body yeah which then I think is you know that's why people say that there was like all that there's abuse and that's why you need to know the word yes opposed to like cookie yes because that generation never talked about it.

21:28Meghan:Yeah. So did you have a naked mom or no? No, but I am curious

21:33Laila:to know. I want to know like stats. Like if you have a naked mom, are you more likely to engage in promiscuous activity or are you less likely because you're just like more, yeah, it's not a big deal or you're more confident. Like I want to know stats about it. And so I'm so do you have it

21:54Meghan:not yeah well also another thing is like when you're growing up I only had sisters growing up so male anatomy was very very foreign to me ever like it never came up because I didn't have any brothers and I feel like that's probably such a different situation if you have siblings of the opposite sex when you're growing up that's probably a very different situation I wonder what that what

22:19Laila:stats are on that okay well possibly but I had a brother but also I was raised like in purity culture okay so yeah not yeah like not familiar with male anatomy at all yeah yeah yeah I also

22:35Meghan:this is so random but I feel like I've heard like you know different sports teams and stuff like swimmers are always in these little tiny bathing suits all the time and I feel like I've heard that there's more promiscuity amongst swimmers. But I'm like, I actually want to know the stats on that. I'm sorry, we're just getting into the -

22:54Laila:This is hilarious.

22:55Meghan:If you are a swimmer and have any insight into this - I would love to know. I'm like, were you, was there more promiscuity? Because it's like, we're seeing everyone's bodies all the time, basically. Does this make, or does it maybe like, it's not a big deal. I see it all the time.

23:14Laila:Fascinating. I can't ever say I have ever once thought of that, Megan.

23:18Meghan:Yeah. Well, I've only thought about it because I think about my children and what sports I want them to be in. And I'm like, would that be leading them down? I'm like, I just want them to be cross country runners because we were all the most innocent little girls ever. Yes. Cross country runners are top tier.

23:35Laila:They're always smart. They're always nice. Yeah. Top tier human beings.

23:39Meghan:We were like, no one was doing anything on my team in high school. And I was like, all right. I just want my kids to be runners because I trust those people. Anyways, besides the point.

23:49Laila:Oh, I wanted to talk about mother's helper babysitter situation. Yes. Yes. Because yours is going to school.

23:58Meghan:Yes. Yeah. She's going to college.

24:01Laila:Oh, college. Okay. Okay.

24:02Meghan:Yeah. It's too bad. I, yeah, I have help from a girl that was homeschooled and she's been so wonderful, but she's going off to college and I had her twice a week for three hours at a time. And it's when I could get my podcast recordings in all of my admin stuff from my podcast done. And then also try to get some housework in and just that little bit of time, six hours a week doesn't seem like much, but a mom that can have six hours to herself can get so much done. I know we know this, but I, yeah, so I'm now trying to figure out my next step for childcare because I cannot go down to having zero help after I've had the help.

24:46Meghan:It will not work for me. So right now that's kind of like the stage I'm in is trying to find another mother's helper slash nanny very part time. But I am really grateful that I figured that out in some capacity because yeah, just like I need it sometimes, you know.

25:07Laila:So what's your game plan for finding that help?

25:11Meghan:i am basically going to start by reaching out to my network so i first asked my current mother's helper slash babysitter i'm like do you have any friends do you have any homeschool friends that are not yet going to college that you'd recommend and she had a couple people she thought of so she was reaching out to them for me i also reached out to like my whole network and be like Like, hey, I know your sister still is doing this. Like, do you think she'd want to come one day a week? I've just been like throwing it out there to anyone and everyone. If I don't get any bites on this round, I honestly might reach out to some other stay-at-home moms that I know might want to make a little money on the side and be like, thoughts on watching my kids once a week.

25:59Laila:Megan, that's so smart. Because I'm sure. I'm sure they do. no that is someone out there like not that's my it's not like you're trying they're not trying to pay their mortgage or anything but they'd love to have the money to like go get their nails done exactly exactly so why have we not why have why has no one why are we not capitalizing on this

26:21Meghan:we need to consider i feel like sometimes it feels like a weird ask because you don't want to like assume or anything there's a lot like i don't know or you're like what if your kids stop getting along and then it's an awkward thing. It's a risk, I suppose, but I'm desperate enough to where if I can't find something, I will take that next step. Don't get twisted.

26:46Laila:That is so funny. So this coming year with your oldest going to preschool three days a week, are you wanting help on another day or on one of those three days just to watch your second? yeah I would rather have one of the off days have them watch both of them

27:06Meghan:sorry and also it's like she's only going in the morning it's not like I have full days away from my oldest three days a week and I'm never gonna see her it's like that day ends so quickly oh

27:17Laila:it's so I run one errand and it's like I have to and it's I have to go pick him up it's really not

27:22Meghan:it's really not worth it but that's what I would hope is on one of the off days I have someone for a long period of time and I can get everything done. And then I can run my errands while my oldest is at school and I only have my youngest and I'm only taking one out of the car seat.

27:37Laila:So that's my, that's my game plan.

27:40Meghan:What about you and your mother's helper childcare situation? Yeah.

27:45Laila:So I had my mother's helper who was a homeschool girl and she was just, I would, I will still would I would take a bullet yeah bullet for her yeah I okay so for everyone listening a mother's helper is basically like a babysitter but you're still there so you don't have to pay them as much and they're typically whereas I feel like Megan's situation is unique they're usually not that old they're usually like yeah 12 like 11 12 13 yeah yeah yeah so like and

28:20Meghan:And I do leave my house sometimes with mine. And so it's because she is older and she's so good. And I do leave the house. I do pay her a higher wage because I'm kind of like you can really hold down the fort if I need you to where I had someone who was younger and I paid a lot less because she couldn't hold the fort down as well.

28:39Laila:Yes, exactly. Because you're having to step in and still do a lot. But exactly. You're also exactly. Yeah. So I yeah. So I had one. She was literally so amazing and then and homeschool was obviously great because they could they can do it during the day like exactly yeah so that's helpful and then um she had to go off and go to traditional high school yeah you get it um but she was also so wonderful and she's still our babysitter and this is my biggest this is why i literally have not found someone else or i'm not even willing to put in the effort because I'm like you're just never going to be as good as so and so and it's because she and I think it's it's part of just being homeschooled and it's also part of like not just the way she's raised obviously like she's not on her phone like she doesn't have an iPhone yeah whereas I don't want to pay someone because babysitting has I feel like

29:39Meghan:back in the day when we were babysitting I was like I am making bank like this was oh yeah but

29:44Laila:But now it's – you are actually – like you are making money. Money. Yeah. You can't find – it is freaking expensive to pay for a sitter. So I'm like I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for you to be scrolling your phone the whole time or taking pictures of my kids.

30:00Meghan:Yeah. And like putting it on your Snapchat story. Yeah. So I'm – that's kind of what has been keeping me away. That's really hard. It is hard.

30:09Laila:But this year I need to – so she's our babysitter in the summer. She helped like one day a week. but yeah school started again so i need to find someone for the fall for sure yeah just to watch i don't know i feel like i probably would choose a day that the oldest is at preschool because then you would have the toddler and then as long as the i mean right now he and i this baby and i are like attached to the hip because he's exactly but then eventually it'll be like okay he takes three naps a day when he's not napping or nursing like you hold him or like you have him and it's fine yeah um and then i also i like i i didn't even the issue with the preschool is that we only had the option of three days or five days and i would have actually preferred a two-day

31:01Meghan:right so i'm like i don't want to spend another day i'm away yeah no that's fair at least it's at least they're not full days they are short mornings and then we have them all afternoon

31:17Laila:and evening that does help well we should probably wrap it up because we don't here all day

31:21Meghan:which is so fun because we'll be here every other week so we have so much so much to discuss
