In short
The episode argues that Donald Trump’s attacks on Canada could push Canada toward becoming a nuclear weapons power. It claims Trump’s posts about Canada “ripping off” the U.S. and sovereignty threats (including Greenland) create political will for nuclear deterrence. It cites Canadian non-signing of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, Canada’s nonproliferation stance, and its uranium enrichment capability. It highlights CANDU heavy-water reactors as producing plutonium (including plutonium-239) and says this could be converted into warheads. Key examples include Mark Carney framing Canada as “at war” with America and polling that allegedly shows distrust of the Trump administration. Guests mentioned: Mark Carney (background: Canadian political leader/economic figure), and Maggie Haberman (background: long-time Trump reporter/journalist).

That's an actual miscalculation and misstatement of the balance of trade issue between Canada and the United States and the rest. there's an interesting question that has now developed and is suddenly on the lips of Canadians in a way that it never was. Is Donald Trump pushing Canada to become a nuclear weapon power? Oh, yes. You heard me right. I am now seeing more articles and more speculation, including, and I'm talking about mainstream media in Canada, like the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, speculating about how simple it would be for Canada to flip the switch and go from civilian use of nuclear power using its nuclear reactors to become a nuclear weapon power.
1:06Michael Popok:They point out that Canada has refused to sign the treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons. Sure, they're in the non-proliferation treaty, meaning we don't want to see loose nukes, but they have not signed off on not having nuclear weapons. And they happen to have a very robust uranium enrichment process or program in Canada, one that could very easily be converted into making nuclear weapons. They have something called the CANDU, C-A-N-D-U, heavy water reactors that creates plutonium at 239 isotope. And that can be used eventually using its own domestic supply of uranium, something that we don't have in abundance, but Canada does its own uranium, turning it into plutonium.
2:07Michael Popok:And it's very easy to go from that into an enrichment process to create a nuclear warhead. Why would they want to do that? Well, if you have a country to your south on your border of 5 ,000 miles that is constantly talking about jeopardizing and not respecting your sovereignty, trying to take you over, trying to make you against your will the 51st state, maybe using military in order to do that as they threaten other countries like Greenland, right? When you have that and you have Mark Carney saying we are effectively at war and Canadians do not trust the United States and two-fifths of polled Canadians say that they see the Trump administration as the enemy, that therefore gives the political will to do something that until now the Canadians had not been willing to do, which is to create nuclear weapons as a deterrent against the United States.
3:12Michael Popok:Let's start with Mark Carney putting this relationship properly in war terms. Play the clip. I'm going to go through why we're walking away from a bad deal and what comes next.
3:29Good morning, everyone. You're at war when you get attacked. We got attacked.
3:44We've been under no illusions. We recognized from the start that America has changed. We recognize that sometimes its signature was written in pencil. The gap between partnership and competitor, unfortunately, has remained too wide in recent days.
4:15Let me be clear. We take this step reluctantly. Reluctantly because we recognize that some of these measures will raise costs.
4:36Last spring, I warned that America is trying to break us. so they can own us. And I promise that that will never, ever happen. We are keeping that promise.
4:50Michael Popok:When you have that, when you have the Canadian people rallying around Mark Carney, when you have them talking about Canada first and the protection of Canada, and you have a country led by an out-of-control fascist dictator in Donald Trump, on your border, it would make a lot of sense, even though you're part of NATO, to have your own nuclear deterrent. And I never thought those words would come off my lips, but it's on the lips of Canadians as you look at article after article since Donald Trump started bashing Canada talking about the nuclear option. Now, Canada had been involved heavily with the Americans in the Manhattan Project, in the development of the atomic bomb.
5:45Michael Popok:So it's not like they've sat on the sidelines of history or science in this particular area. It's just that they made a decision and there seemed to be no political will for them to become a nuclear power. Now, most nuclear powers that we believe exist out there, even though they're not acknowledged, like India, Pakistan, Israel, etc., they develop their nuclear program in secret, as did Iran. One, Canada has the ability, if they wanted to, to do the same thing, to develop things in secret, because they've got just the right type of reactor that can easily be converted into enriching its own uranium and creating its own nuclear material.
6:33Michael Popok:And what's Donald Trump going to do about it? I mean, there's nothing in the NATO alliance or treaty that says individual members can't have nuclear weapons. And as I said, Canada has refused to sign the United Nations Treaty on the proliferation of nuclear weapons. So is Donald Trump pushing the Canadian? That's what I'm positing here. Are we pushing our one strong ally and friend into having warheads in order to deter the land-grabbing instincts of Donald Trump? Yes or no? It's a sad state of affairs, but one that's completely understandable if the Canadians don't want to wait around to see what's up Donald Trump's up his sleeve next.
7:21Michael Popok:I mean, Maggie Haberman was just on Legal AF with the Court of History program, and she has been following Donald Trump for 20 and 30 years and writes things that he cannot refute Trump. She said in the interview that the more Donald Trump is cornered, the crazier he acts. And you don't know what he's going to do next because he's got a short time horizon and he's been effectively cornered. So if the Democrats win in the midterms, look for a crazier, out of control, irrational Trump. Play the Maggie Haberman clip. I look past November and it's something of a black hole because Trump, when he feels cornered, tends to be more wild, number one.
8:14And number two, I don't think we know what it looks like when an entire government doesn't respond to subpoenas. Right.
8:20Michael Popok:So if you're Canada, you have to be considering having nuclear deterrent to Donald Trump. I mean, we have Trump talking about the nuclear option. And that alone for people like Tucker Carlson and the far right is a disqualifier. They're talking about impeachment of Donald Trump because he's talking about using nuclear weapons. Play the clip of Tucker Carlson. I believe in stability. I think elected leaders should serve out their terms. I don't hate Trump personally. So with all of that said, the second any president actively considers first use of nuclear weapons, that person should be removed from office immediately, immediately, because that's got to be the red line, destroying all of humanity with a nuclear strike.
9:08I mean, so why isn't there an attempt to remove him from office immediately? Anyone who would even tolerate that kind of talk from any of his subordinates or employees is by definition unfit. That's the total destruction of the world. No?
9:26Michael Popok:That just happened over the weekend. So the fact that the nuclear word is on the lips of everybody has to be concerning to Ottawa, to Canada, and to Mark Carney, who has to protect his people. Every country, The number one thing that has to be done besides preserving your values, preserving your constitutional rights and the foundation upon which your country is built and not sacrifice that is the national security of your country. Who would begrudge Mark Carney if he considered nuclear weapons to protect against the Mad King with his finger on a nuclear button so concerning that the alt-right wants him removed under the 25th Amendment and or have him impeached?
10:17Michael Popok:The fact that I have to do a hot take about nuclear weapons in Canada tells you everything you need to know about how the rest of the world has reoriented itself around Donald Trump and has gone into a protective measure. Even our NATO allies will continue to support what Canada does to protect itself from an out-of-control president as the Democrats hopefully return to power and find a way to rein in Donald Trump and to take us off of, you know, the abyss, move us back from the abyss of having what was once allies consider nuclear options.
