1:13Rob Lowe:hey everybody welcome to literally um today uh is um called we are family because it's my family it's my son John Owen my son Matthew Lowe my wife Cheryl Lowe turns out people like to hear what I really like and you know I have a wonderful family they're pretty awesome and the shows that they've been on have been performed really well so I wanted to pick some of the most interesting and probably let's face it most embarrassing moments of their times here on Literally.

2:01Rob Lowe:Cheryl Lowe, this is an auspicious time to have you on the show. Never had anybody from the family on the show. We should call the kids. Oh, we will. Okay, we'll call the kids in a minute. But it's our 32nd wedding anniversary. I know. So happy anniversary, honey. Happy anniversary. It feels both like it was yesterday. Literally like this is how, you know, the new quantum mechanics physicists tell you that there's no such thing as time. It's not linear. It's events like this because it feels like it was yesterday. And it also feels like it's been forever. But even know what to make of that. No, it's all good.

2:41Rob Lowe:That's good. The forever part of it is the highs, the lows, the ups, the dead, the accomplishments, the history, what we've done together, what we've seen together, the adventures, the memories here he goes it's all good i really just have to say like first of all it's so great just being in the moment so i'm not really thinking about how old it feels how new it feels i'm just thinking about today and today you're a super fun partner thank you really funny you always make me laugh i am unless i'm mad but i'm trying never try to any more of these days to be reactive um you are still really great in bed thank you and i take great pride in it you're a great father um you're just and a great friend to me because you i mean you have friends i love that you're starting to get even more that you really care about usually i'm a loner

3:41um and you are i'm trying to go back to the list honey come on tell me about because you know i

3:48Rob Lowe:can't get enough talking about myself oh god what but here's the thing we're talking about ourselves as a couple so that by definition half of it is going to be about me i was telling you about things i like about you and now we're going to talk about you again no no i just want to i want to i want you to take me back to what because i want to talk about what attracted me to you. Wait, hold on. That doesn't make sense. You want me to talk about what attracted you to me? No, I want to talk about... I don't even understand. I don't either. I haven't had enough coffee. I haven't eaten. I haven't eaten.

4:20Rob Lowe:And it's the time of day where... Let's go south really quickly. This is where the intermittent fasting... Okay, I know where you're getting at. You want me to tell you why I liked you in the beginning? That's right. I didn't like you. That's true. You totally... But you were attracted to me. You just didn't like me. No, no. No, I think it's like neither. I mean, I didn't dislike you, but I didn't think about you in that way. You were like that guy that had the earring and that, you know, weird long hair. And you were, I considered you to be like small because I'd always, well, I had been dating somebody in there, you know, over six feet and you were under six feet.

4:57um i mean you were definitely i'm not gonna call you pretty because i'm just so sick of hearing that um but you know obviously good looking great looking great body but um you know you dressed in like those elton john glasses and those i don't know you were just like i like more like dudes um and so i thought you were you were really nice and i'd see you around and we had some of the same friends and you were a hardcore partier and I wasn't. So there were like things, you know, that didn't attract me in your area or your direction. But when it actually did happen, I remember thinking, God, he is so much fun in the perfectly good way.

5:41Like smart, surprisingly really smart. Not a follower in any sense, true leader. Funny as everybody knows about you that actually knows you people can see your performances and know you're good but you know robert hapler low is super funny on a daily basis nightly basis too and you were engaging and present a little hollywood and full yourself but like that was not at the top so the other stuff definitely you know stood out way more so i i kind of i felt like i hadn't given you a chance you know i wasn't you really just weren't in my atmosphere and then when you did get in it um i had such so just like a great time with you and i wanted you as a friend because again you still weren't my arousal template but um you know a couple fun nights and a little convincing and here we are okay that's a lot to unpack tried to do the short

6:46Rob Lowe:version for you no no no i thought the length of it was exactly perfect you've trained me well i have we've worked on your storytelling and you're and you're and you're making leaps and bounds oh we'll cut to it no no that was good that was what gwyneth would say yeah land the plane land the plane um but there's a lot to unpack i i want to take a minute to carve out my wardrobe what about my you don't you didn't like my earring i didn't dislike it it wasn't for me it was There's a whole group of people that would have loved an earring in a guy. Oh, there was. For sure. For sure. But not you. But not you.

7:22Rob Lowe:No. I was into the surf scene, remember? Right. Right. You liked super SoCal dudes, like you said. Yeah. Athletes, athletic, you know. Guys in the gym, not talking about the gym. Oh, I was in the gym. Oh, I mean, come on, what? No, but I couldn't compete with your Olympic boyfriends, Olympic champion, big, like chiseled out of a dog. Okay, but you didn't need to compete with them because you didn't care about me either. Well, I don't know if that's true. I just, I had a lot of distractions. Everybody has a story. Every couple has a story about how they met and didn't notice each other. I shouldn't say every couple, but there are those that, you know, our story isn't different in that way.

8:09What's great about our story is that we were legit best friends and hung out with each other. After we got through that hump of what we just spoke about, we were best friends. We hung out. We had the same circle of friends. I was dating somebody and you'd come around and hang. And I would say I was dating somebody, but I was kind of just hanging out with someone.

8:30Rob Lowe:And you'd sometimes fix me up with people if you felt like they were good partners. We knew each other in a way, in every conceivable situation. Yes, I never, never at that time thought about this. Jesus. Until, weirdly, it was just like, boom. It hit me like, I mean, like a comet. Tell the story about being at the Coliseum. Oh, it's so weird. I don't even understand it. That's what's great about it. Because it wasn't like I thought about you, And it wasn't like when I saw you, I was like, oh, I'm going to, you know, blah, blah, blah. I was and am good friends with Marcus Allen. And great running back was playing for the Raiders.

9:14Rob Lowe:That's right. Heisman, everything, just great guy. And he was legitimately just my friend. And he periodically would give me his seats. And this one game, I was there with some friends. And he said to me, I'm dating this girl. She's sitting a couple rows behind you. You know, check out who she's with. She said she was bringing a friend. and let me know what you think of her. And so when I look back, the friend was you. Yeah, Marcus couldn't have been happy about that. So I thought, do I destroy Rob? Because Marcus is not going to be pleased. In the long run, he didn't care. So I went to get a bite to eat at the concession stands.

9:53This is at the Coliseum. And I was walking. And the concession area was on the outside of the Coliseum. So you walk around this whole circle. And I was on the inside and Rob was walking toward me on the outside. And I remember seeing him and ducking. Like I didn't want him to see me. I didn't want to deal with saying hello. And you were just by yourself like cruising. Nobody was bothering you. And weird flash came in. I don't know where. And it was like someday I'm going to be married to this guy. And I didn't even like. I don't know where I realized that I had thought that at what point in my life.

10:30because it was like there wasn't like nothing about you i thought about and that was this weird thing i don't know i don't understand it it was like a like subconscious premonition if that exists

10:42Rob Lowe:because i had the same the same with you when we took our trip as friends to um to fiji and and and we walked into our little bungalow and they'd put our names together on the door my name wrong but yeah they spelled your name wrong but i looked at it and i had the same premonition well i mean that's a little different mine's a little more legit because yeah because we didn't even know we weren't even yeah and yours i mean we were already on a trip together and sleeping together and you know right like i don't know i thought that was all part of your plan of like isn't this romantic and oh i had no plan i had never had a plan in those days i and we came home and it all fell apart so from my perspective uh you know we met on a on a blind date we we yeah blind for you blind for me not you obviously were like duh you're gonna go to so so mutual friends like yeah a couple girls are gonna come meet us for dinner and we luciella dobe restaurant mexican restaurant you walked in with your girlfriend that was how we met it was great and and you're right like i was I was busy.

11:51Rob Lowe:I didn't, you know, it wasn't really on my radar either. But like, I think, because people always say how to, you know, 32 years is a long time. It's a long time, particularly in this business. It's like 132 years in show business. And, you know, people always ask me, you know, do I have any advice? And, you know, you hit it on the head. For me, it's sort of the battle is won and lost with who you choose. and we were best friends you were always the person i wanted to be with hang out with share stuff with um and it was an added bonus all of the rest of it um that's so sweet and you know so here we are 30 32 years in with you know two boys and you know and and you know what well i have to interrupt you sure i want to say that something i just i get so like afraid that i'm going to forget you the one thing i really appreciate i mean one of many but one thing i appreciate that that's right here i gotta say is that you let me be me you don't try to change me unless it's something that's like really maybe abrasive or and then that's a suggestion um you really let me do my thing.

13:12And I just don't know if I could have been with any other partner that would have tried to impede in my path spiritually, career-wise, physically, whatever, all of it, domestic, like kids and family. Either you agreed with my way naturally, or you just let me do it. And it was just so much, it has been a fun ride and it continues to be.

16:50Rob Lowe:Here's John Owen Lowe. So what is your major grievance you have with me as a father? Let's just get it out. Let's pretend this is the, what is it, the red table? So I'm surprised you know that reference. Hey man, I'm hip. I'm with it. Um, I'm cool. I'm hip. Who's that? Is that Lorne Michaels? Dr. Evil. Right. So Lorne Michaels, um, my main qualm with you as a father is that you, I don't know, maybe that you tried to get me to, you were so, you said, I have such strong hair genes. I need to make sure you carry that baton so you wanted me to go to a hair doctor when I was 21 to make sure my hair was strong that might be one of them yeah

17:42that's it just

17:43Rob Lowe:yeah for sure okay now here's my qualm with you if you could see yourself right now I forgot I had the sunglasses on yeah that's better there's only one person who gets to wear sunglasses all the time and talk to people. We know who that is. Dion. Stevie Wonder? Dion Sanders. Dion's the man. Dion Prime. Coach Prime gets to wear his sunglasses whenever he wants. By the way, talk about a father-son relationship that's badass. Yeah. His son might, he'll be a Heisman candidate. For sure. And look at me. Oh, what a good dog. He's just sleepy. This is just... Talk to me more about me. Yeah. So it's like a family dinner.

18:32Rob Lowe:Talk to me about me and what I'm like to, what's it like to stand and behold me standing in the light of a movie camera? What the fuck kind of question is that? That is so unhinged. and I know it was like partially a bit, but there was enough reality in that, that it really bummed me out. To behold you, I don't know, in front of a movie camera or whatever you say is stupid. It was one of those bits that fell apart. Really fell apart. It was coming out of my mouth. It was falling apart. All right, try again. Take two. What, what, what if anything, did you learn working with me as an actor? Better question.

19:30My serious answer to that might be that you are more professional than I had thought you might be. Interesting. In the sense that when you come to set, although your life is generally chaotic and you have a sort of disgruntled nature about you, when someone, you know, says, take your mark or whatever, and then calls action, you're, you're present in a way that is, it was almost like, oh, there he is. And then they call cut and it's like, you know, your seventh cup of coffee and a sleep mask and you're in your trailer. And then they wake you up as a human being again to go, you know, I mean, you've been acting for what?

20:23My bit is always to be like 70 years, but how long has it actually been? Well, I mean,

20:29Rob Lowe:the first time I started acting, I was eight. Don't do that. Like when's the first time you were in front of a camera acting? Getting paid professionally. Yeah. I was 13. So what? 50-ish years? Yeah. Around 50. Yeah. That's a long time. It's a long time. It's a long time. There's a lot of time in the saddle. What do they say about how many hours? 10 ,000. 10 ,000. You definitely, you far surpassed that. For sure. And you look like you have too. But you just told me my face didn't change. I don't know. I can't keep my bits straight. I know you really can't. What do you want to know about me? Who are you dating?

21:10Rob Lowe:Oh my God. Okay, back to you. No, you opened it up. Dating myself right now. Oh, don't give me that. Yeah, exactly. I know when I call you and you're like, yeah, can I call you back? I'm just walking the dog. I know that's not true. I also know when I call you and go, what are you doing? I call you at home and you're like, I'm just hanging out. Yeah, can I call? I just want to call you right back. I'm just finishing something up. The dog is jumping and yelling. I have him trained to do that when you're asking stupid questions. why are you jumping up here like a fish um first of all how dare you we might need to you may need to go not in here for a little bit maybe Miguel should come walk him is that a possibility I did just feed him so he must have a lot of energy you're a good boy you're a very good boy I'm calling Miguel right now I like when the podcast gets like this It's real Hey man, this shit's real Hey Miguel, can you come get Oscar in the studio?

22:27Rob Lowe:He needs a walk Alright, thanks So to answer your question You know, when I think I'm calling your mother Oh my god Let's get her on the show People have been clamoring to have her back Hello? Hi you're on the podcast now with me and Johnny live what Johnny is trying to tell me that he doesn't have a girlfriend honestly or that he's not dating he's dating himself he just said so Johnny's his own girlfriend now that's kind of what he's implying he's just implying that he's like he's some monk are you telling me you're celibate I can't first of all this whole conversation is so boring to me about Johnny and who he's dating because the redundancy of our curiosity and his aloofness about it has finally desensitized me.

23:22Well, I don't know if she can hear me, but most of this conversation has been aloof. But I'm always interested, always interested in hearing about Johnny. I just wish that he'd meet a nice girl. I mean, you know, girls probably are nice, but one that's more compatible for him. And it exists out there. Although I don't know how people date anymore, Rob. Do you?

23:45Rob Lowe:No. I mean, there's probably really nice dating services like, you know, Bumble. Are you on Bumble? Are you on Bumble? Or what's the other one? Just let me know. Raya. Let me know when this whole bit is over. This is no bit. I'm deadly serious. What about your 30-year-old son? He's not on the podcast today. You are. I got time, man. Cheryl, he's wearing the exact same outfit he was in. That's not true. When he was at the house. I have the same shirt on. Exact same outfit. She's quiet. She's literally stunned beyond words. Oh, she's gone. Amazing. That was amazing. That is a sign. That's a sign.

24:30Rob Lowe:That's amazing. You can't make it up. Okay. Too good. Well, look, I'll say this much. I am excited to get back to Unstable, and here's why. I think in the second season, you will realize that there's so much more to be made fun of about you. But it's not a one joke show. It's not, but in many ways to me, it is. Because it's cathartic for me. And so I get to go in and just pretend. And even when I'm not, and it's very little of my scenes without you actually have anything to do with you. But not up here. Because I get to just remember that in many ways I sold a show that is just about humiliating you.

25:18Rob Lowe:I don't think it's about that. Well, that's okay. I don't. I don't think it's about that. I think it's because your mother, hang on. What does she want? She wants to be on the podcast again. Hi. Ask her if she wants to take over. Why did you guys hang up on me? We didn't hang up. You hung up on us. No, I could never hang up on you. Did we figure out if there's a leak in the house, by the way, really quickly? Oh, that's putting it mildly. Really? Yeah, we're going to have to move out. You're not kidding, are you? Nope. I knew it. I told you. Am I on the podcast right now? You're on the podcast right now.

25:59I am?

26:00Rob Lowe:Yeah. why are we boring people with stuff about leaks this is like so a day in our life I know I'm just so interested in John Owen and the fact is if it takes being on a podcast to be able to hear anything about him I'm okay fine well that's what I'm saying he's here he's a captive audience and we can ask him anything alright alright it's not redundant although the redundant part about it is getting shot down every time you ask Land the plane, Cheryl Land the plane You keep stealing Gwyneth lines Stop it, find your own one Okay, I'm landing the helicopter So, Johnny, tell me What is your ideal Starting from the spirit part Inside out What?

26:50What is your ideal?

26:52Rob Lowe:What is your ideal? Ideal what? Breakfast cereal? Person? Movie role? What? What do you mean? I'm starting over I don't want to get nailed here by you guys What's your Idea of somebody You would be interested in Like you know Not just dating but getting to know better What are some of the Personality traits You're looking for

27:22Really I don't know I hate this This has now gotten too real. Get her off the phone.

27:30Rob Lowe:All right. I'll call you later. Let me ask you this, Johnny. Do you want somebody who is funny? Of course he does. Of course. Who doesn't? This is not your interview. This is what he does. Of course he wants somebody who's funny. Well, some people don't want people funny. What? Some people don't want people funny. Some people don't want people serious. Some people don't want people funny. Sometimes. Do you want somebody that is looking for a family? All right. Bye. Bye. Okay, we're done now. All right, I love you, but that's the end of it. Well, I hope you had fun. I can't wait to call my publicist after this and say, make sure they cut that one part.

28:07Rob Lowe:There's no cutting. I love it. There's no cutting, and this is what it is.

28:21Rob Lowe:Matthew Lowe. Matthew and I have always been super interested in the outdoors together, history together, documentaries together, politics together, and getting out in nature. I think, like, wouldn't you say that you and I would be outside any chance we could be? If we could? Oh, for sure. I'm the type of person where even, for example, like on this trip here, it's a long weekend. It's Memorial Day. So I have three days here, but I get antsy just sitting around the resort and sitting around. I'm like, okay, like we should go snorkeling. We should go fishing. We should go diving. Activities, activities, activities.

29:04And I really appreciated that because I remember on our family trips growing up, we always had activities. and I think that pushed me into always wanting to do things. And for me, I think I got it from your dad, from Grandpa Chuck, who loved fishing. And actually, Mom's Grandpa Earl, too, had fishing and that just took off early. It started with fishing and then it became surfing and then it became spearfishing and then it became hunting. And so now I'm just anything in the outdoors. Talk about, this is the other thing,

29:38Rob Lowe:is as parents, you all relate. If you have kids, you want to know what they're up to, but also you're kind of glad sometimes you don't know what they're up to. We had a trip to Hawaii and Matthew went spearfishing and it wasn't until a couple of years later that you finally told me what happened on the deep hole experience. Tell that story because it still gives me the shivers. Yeah, so I grew up freediving, spearfishing. absolutely love it don't get to do it as much as I like back home in California because it's a little cold and murky for those who don't know that's free diving literally you're diving holding your breath with a spear gun or a spear pole yep and so we grew up coming to the big island of Hawaii and here the water's amazingly clear, warm so whenever I'm here I really like doing it a lot over the years got to know a lot of great people here so I had friends uh one time i was out with a friend of mine uh rob white and a captain geo we were both diving in the water um and we were like a couple hundred yards away from each other and the boat was a further hundred yards away out how far how far offshore how far offshore um we were in a hundred feet of water and like probably a quarter mile offshore um and we were trying to hunt these fish called uku, which is gray snapper.

31:05So you drop chum and you're watching it fall to the bottom and you're trying to see these fish come up in the chum line. And we hadn't seen anything in like an hour and a half. So you kind of zone out a little bit. And I'm sitting there watching the chum go down and it's kind of later in the day. And all of a sudden I hear Gio from the boat yelling at me and I was like, huh? And I turned my head up and he was like, Matthew, tiger, turn around. and I turned around and spun. And as I spun, there was this tiger shark right behind me, like coming full speed at me. And when I turned and swung my gun and made eye contact with it, at about 10 feet away from me, it veered down like I had caught it in the act and went down to the bottom and did a circle around me and then went out, out in the blue.

31:52And I lost track of it. I was like, oh my God, that was crazy. And it was probably like 12, 13 foot tiger shark. I swam back to the boat and Gio was like yeah man that thing was coming at you full speed from behind and you turned around just in the nick of time and I was like was it was it coming to say hello or was it coming to investigate a little a little bit more toothy and he was like yeah that was potentially really bad had you not turned around because that's what they do come up behind you

32:21Rob Lowe:do you think you would have even turned around had you not been had he not alerted you to it but here's the other thing I've just heard another part of the story that I'd never heard before. First of all, I didn't hear the story at all. Then I heard the story like a year later. Now it's many years later. And now you're dropping a very specific detail that if your mother heard, she would lose it, which is your buddy had to tell you to turn around. In other words, you didn't see it at all. Yeah. To be honest with you, I didn't. And I've had a lot of times in the water, and I'm sure you have too, surfing, where you kind of get that feeling.

32:55Yes. You know? And I've had that before. And I'm pretty safe where if I get that weird feeling nowadays, I'm just like, I'm calling it or I'm out. But I didn't have that then. And I don't know why. I definitely just only turned around because he was yelling at me. Okay.

33:10Rob Lowe:So what does your mom always say to you before you go diving? Make sure you have a buddy. Never dive alone. Never dive alone. And you don't. She literally was saying that she was saying this last night. We were going to dinner and I forgot how the subject of freediving came up and she was just saying, I hope that you're just smart now. I hope that you just, don't be stupid. You have so much to live for. I was like, I know I have so much to live for. That's such a Cheryl Lowe. Yeah, it really is. That is insane. How would you describe your mother? What was it like being raised by your mother? her.

33:48Cheryl Lowe is a force of nature. That is for sure. She is super loving. She would take a bullet for anyone in the family. You do not want to get on her bad side. She is the ultimate mama bear. And she is one of the funniest people, both intentionally and oftentimes unintentionally. Oh, unintentionally.

34:11Rob Lowe:I like when she starts speaking in broken English. yes so let i took a video yesterday there was a gecko in the house and she was slamming picture frames trying to get the gecko she's like there's going to be multiple geckos behind all of these paintings and she's slamming the paintings and just running around in in her like nightgown i was like this is just the unintentional craziness of cheryl low yeah the notion that she thinks that there are going to be multiple geckos behind the picture frames because there's one gecko in the in the place. Yeah. And she's the type of person where you'll get a call at 4 PM and I'm like, Hey, I'm just finishing up work.

34:49Can I call you in a minute? She's like, this is really important. I need to talk to you. Okay. Well, let me step outside. I'll step outside. And she just goes, I'm really concerned. I really think that Daisy's mad at me and she doesn't want to hang out with me. Daisy being her dog, her pet, Jack Russell. Amazing. Like, well, I'm at work right now in the office. Like I can't talk about the politics of our dogs. And she's deadly serious, right? Oh yeah. Very serious. She goes, she's moody. She doesn't like me. I don't know what's going on.

35:18Rob Lowe:There's no, that's why, I mean, that's people are like, how did you pick Cheryl? And because she's among other things, she's so interesting. And when she was on the podcast, it's funny. She was the first person I had on the show that was of the family because I just thought it'd be fun for people to see, to meet our family. And, um, it's gotten, people love the episode because she's so entertaining and such a unique person of, in addition to being, you know, all the other amazing things that she has, she's a character. Literally, she's an actual character. I might, I might expose myself a little bit here, but I pick and choose my episodes literally that I listened to.

35:59Rob Lowe:Oh, let's talk about that. Okay. All right. Yeah. And she is, she's one of my favorites for sure. Really? Yeah. It was a great one. People always like to ask, do your kids ever see any of your movies or like, what exactly? And I say no. And they go, not really. So here, for those of you who don't believe it, you've seen very little of my work. um yes there are definitely things that i just don't have the patience to go and watch nor interest or the um uh one of those being we were on a trip recently and and it was we have had a tradition on this trip that we go on every year of watching movies and the host picks the movie and it was centered around artists so you picked a movie that you were in.

36:48And we watched Bad Influence. Wait, wait, wait.

36:49Rob Lowe:Hang on, hang on. You're making me sound like an egomaniac, which I may be. But it was, the artist has to pick a movie of their own. Yes. It wasn't like, he said, hey, pick a movie, Rob. And I went, I'm going to pick Bad Influence, which I did. It had to be one of mine. I like my version of events better. Yes. Because it makes me look bad. Yes. But go ahead. Yes. So, you put that one on, rightfully. and I remember texting Johnny in the middle of it because we're sitting next to each other, and I go, I kind of want to just go get snacks. Not really because I want a snack, but I'm not very entertained by this.

37:28Rob Lowe:That's one of my better ones. It's one of my better ones. I don't know. I think you should have thrown on Tommy Boy. It's okay. What are the ones you have seen? I love Tommy Boy. I can rewatch that one anytime. I'm just a massive Farley fan. Wayne's World, also great. The cameo in Austin Powers, amazing. I think actually I'm your biggest fan in the family of the West Wing. I've seen it multiple times, the seasons. I'm in it, which is - You are in it. Oh, you are in it. It's my claim to fame. It's the famous episode, right? Not only, Matthew, are you in the West Wing? You are in arguably, without a doubt, any West Wing fan will tell you it's in the top five ever made.

38:14Rob Lowe:and it's a lot of people's favorite episodes. The episode's called Noel and it's the episode Richard Schiff won his Emmy deservedly for. It's a Christmas episode and there are carolers in one of the rooms of the West Wing. Don't give it away too much. I want to see if the viewers can even figure out which one's me. Oh, that's a good idea. Yeah, see if they can figure it out. We'll have to find a young Matthew Lowe. How old am I? seven. I'm really young. I have a vivid memory of that day. You know how when you're really young, you have kind of like snapshot memories of things? Yes. I remember being really, really annoyed and uncomfortable because I had to wear dress shoes and they were really tight and being uncomfortable in dress shoes.

39:04And that's my little snippet memory of that day. And also playing chess with Martin Sheen.

39:08Rob Lowe:I mean, that's a pretty cool memory. Yeah. You got to play chess with President Bartlett. Mm-hmm. Those are my memories of that day. But yeah, I'm a huge fan of the West Wing. I love it. It got me interested in politics. I do think that the West Wing did a great job of glamorizing what politics is actually like, and it's only gotten worse and worse and more divisive since then. And I don't know. I think the world would be a lot better if we could go back to the West Wing days of politics. I know it's like when you watch that show now It almost seems Not almost it seems quaint It's like oh bless their cotton socks Yeah And then also I was a Parks and Rec fan Before you were on the show Yeah you were I remember coming to you and Johnny And saying I had a chance to be on this show Parks and Rec and all I knew At the time about Parks and Rec was I was a big Amy Poehler fan And a big fan of anybody with SNL And I knew that they were making this show which was originally supposed to be sort of a spinoff or at least inspired by The Office.

40:19Rob Lowe:And every picture I ever saw was Amy sitting in a dirt hole or something. And I was like, what is this show? So I didn't really watch it. And then they asked me to be on it. And I went to you and Johnny. And you guys gave me great career advice and said, yeah, this is a cool show. Be on it. And I was also a very big fan of the DirecTV commercials.

42:50Rob Lowe:Cheryl Lowe. Tell me what your favorite podcast that you've listened to is. How many podcasts of mine do you listen to? Well, I learned my lesson the last time I was on, and now you're my favorite podcast. What does that mean? That just means... That was a dodge. I think I... No, it's not. The truth is, last time I was on and I talked about podcasts, I had more time to do podcasts, but I was finishing building this house that we've since moved into and running my business, my jewelry design business, Charlo Designs, which I love and I'm super passionate about. But I also love doing our home. and in the final stretch, I knew it was going to require more time from me.

43:38There's a lot more answers, a lot of really incredibly time-sensitive decisions and there's no complaints. I absolutely love it. So my extra time, I wasn't probably going to be listening to podcasts. I would rather read some poetry, read books that fill up my soul a little bit because when I'm doing the other kind of work, You're not a podcast person. Not really, but I mean, I do enjoy them. And so I listen to yours because I love some of the people you're interviewing. And I love listening to what you're asking them. And just instead of asking you when you get home, I took to listening to your podcast.

44:23Isn't that good enough just to hear that?

44:25Rob Lowe:I'm going to let that answer slide. I'm not going to dig deeper. Because at the end of the day... My podcast today is about love. Yeah. I decided just now. Oh, is that the theme of it? Yeah. It's about love. What do you want to say about that then? I think, I don't think anything. I feel so much love today in my life. I have two sons that I'm so proud of and that I communicate well with. and I feel so blessed every day, no matter whether I'm having a tough day or a great day. I feel blessed because I know that's part of the process and I'm happy. And I just like to remember that when I'm feeling less than happy on any given day, which I remind myself, that's what's called being human, being alive.

45:18And I love being with you. I love our friendship, our relationship. I take everything one day at a time. I just love that. I don't just live for today. That just wouldn't be the truth. What do you mean? I think I've heard people say, I just live for today. Well, it's like really, so you're saying you don't think about tomorrow at all?

45:45Rob Lowe:Right. Yeah, yeah. Most of us plan. We're going to have a dinner party Friday night. That's why the serenity prayer is the greatest thing ever. You can only control what you can control and how do you know the difference between what you, today and planning for, it's finding that sweet spot. And part of recognizing love for me is quieting my soul, quieting the voices in my head, the pictures. I really do make an effort to remind myself okay just slow it down slow your dialogue down cheryl because i'm talking to me now and um you know these are my inner this is the inner mantra yeah uh and it really helps me be a better partner more calming like when you're feeling anxiety you know i i allow the stillness to seep out you know and i i i feel like we do that for each other you're not as still you know i mean but that part of what I love about you is your energy.

46:55And so that's what, so like I have girlfriends, I have a couple of really close girlfriends and their mantra is about love too. And we've attracted to one another in that way as we've gotten older. I'm not saying we're old, but as we've matured, we look for more loving environments and want to simplify things.

47:17Rob Lowe:Yes. Because there's only so much runway. There's only so much bandwidth. And so now I choose to spend that on individuals I love being around, places I like being at, ideas and things I like to hopefully try to make a change or speak out about. And I'm very careful about that. Everybody has an opinion and not everybody wants to hear it. Hallelujah to that. Right? Yeah, for sure. So I want to be around people where I also feel loved and feel appreciated and that have patience with me and add more like are, you know, less judgmental. Because also as I get mature, I realize judgment is just a tough road.

48:08You know, it can, I recognize where am I feeling that? Where am I feeling my weirdness right now? And I'll look like, is it my stomach? Is it my chest?

48:15Rob Lowe:You're big on that. You're big on like where, where's that coming from in your body? That's right. Yeah. You know, there's certain emotions based on parts of the body. Right. And it's not my job to educate right now on your podcast about it because I'm learning. No, I'm a student. I'm not a teacher. Well, I mean, I'm a teacher. Well, you know, I would say emotions probably in the chest or I would, I don't know, for me, if I'm angry, I'm just trying to think of where I feel it. I think it's probably different Or different places. By the way, can I have some of your water? What's wrong with your water?

48:49Rob Lowe:It's too cold. Oh. I love it. There's something about the aesthetic of this. Plus there's lemon in it. I knew it. I don't mind sharing. I knew it. But now I took my sip first. In the old days, I would have given it to you first and then had my sip. You learned to take care of yourself? Is that what you're saying? Mm-hmm. Yes. Mm-hmm. Okay, well, don't drink at all.

49:20thank you right back on the thing um oh you don't want it here that's your i'm just trying to put

49:26Rob Lowe:it back i'm trying that's called a coaster i'm trying not to okay hang on what's that thing it's a coaster thank you i'm just trying not to trigger your um what is it don't say it um when you everything has to be in the right place that is true do you know what's amazing about you, you have the ability among other things. My favorite Sheryl Lowe parlor trick is your mind is like a Tetris game. I love puzzles. I really do. I know you do. You can look at a piece of art or a piece of furniture and be like, yeah, that will fit perfectly in the such and such and such and such and you'll get it home and it literally does like you have the ability to tetris like okay well it's amazing the thing about me is that i am trying to preserve certain parts of myself that as you get older go away so i'm trying to be preemptive and a little proactive versus reactive on that and so i'm doing these games where it works your memory.

50:41And instead of like playing my slot machines online, I'm now doing these like matching games and doing things for memory. And my really great friend, Maria, she's like, Oh, it's Maria Shriver. We can stay. She's like great influence on like, you know, memory games and brain benders. And, you know, she's brought intellectual behavior into my life many years ago. I mean, I have, you know, I have other best friends. I mean, you know, my friend Gwyneth brings wellness into my life. My friend Ava, you know, brings opportunity and physical activity into my life. You know, so I mean like, and I'm sure in their life, I bring laughter and love and consistency and loyalty.

51:26Rob Lowe:You are also a complete, unique, unicorn, energetic spirit that is a true one-off. A true, look, everybody is a one-off. And then there are one-offs. And you are that. I have to say on that, I really appreciate it. And there was a time in which I would have been like, oh, I don't want, you know, I didn't want to hear any compliments. But now I don't look at them as compliments. I look at them as love letters. Yeah, for sure. Love language. And I really love that you see me and you feel that way about me and that my friends, you know, feel loved by me. and that my boys feel really taken care of by me as they're growing into finding women, wives to do that with them.

52:25Is that like, I just remember as a young girl, really young, and then as a teenager, and then in my late teens and my dating phase that I realized I was always really outspoken, but I would do it in a way where I had no edit button. And so sometimes I would hurt people's feelings and it wasn't until a friend of mine had mentioned to me, he's like, you know that, you have a sharp tongue. It can be really hard on people. And I was so young, but I remember it sitting with me. And so I didn't fix it or at least attempt to work on it until later. So now I haven't changed that part of myself. I haven't suppressed anything, but I'm careful that just because I'm feeling something doesn't mean it's true.

53:10about that person or whatever in the universe. And so I don't need to vocalize, verbalize exactly what I'm thinking at that moment. It just can't come right out of my mouth. But I definitely express myself and I'm always about my truth. I really am. And if I make a mistake because I'm human on that, I try to come back around to it or work. I love this part of life being with you, Rob. And that is you love to work spiritually to improve and become a better person. And you have shared that with me. And I definitely started it before you. I think, like I said, I read poetry as a young girl. And I love that.

53:59It just really quieted my soul. It made me think. It helped me as an artist.

54:04Rob Lowe:You did. I remember when we were just dating and I was a crazy man still. what were the two books you gave me? One was... I don't remember. Jonathan Livingston Siegel. Right. That sounds so dated. It's important. I love that book. And then there was another one. When we went to... We were going to Fiji in Australia. There were two... Krishnamurti. I can't remember what it was. I wish it was. But like, yeah, you were on the path... What was it? Way before. Was it like there was these books that used to be like We and She and... I don't know what it was. It's driving me crazy. It was like self-help way before self-help.

54:41It was like a mixture of philosophy, self-help, and poetry.

54:49Rob Lowe:I was reading like Spy Magazine. It was just spiritualism. You were reading that. Should we check in with the boys? That's what it's fun to do. Hold on. Yeah, let's call Johnny. Johnny? You want to call Johnny? Well, you want to call Matty. He's just at work, though. I think Johnny doesn't have a job yet. Yeah, Matthew's at work. Try him. Let's try him. He's at first. He's the oldest. Yeah, we should give him the proper respect. Matthew's newly engaged, everyone. I know. It's very exciting. Super exciting. His sweet girlfriend, now fiance, Emily. We're on the podcast right now, but we just wanted to check in with you right now.

55:20Did you FaceTime him?

55:21Rob Lowe:No, but I didn't. What? FaceTime him. There, I'm FaceTiming you. All right. Okay. FaceTime. Wait, what did you just say? There you go. Did you come in? Good, good, good. Yeah. Okay. Are you there, Matthew? Hey. what's up sorry podcast and then facetime that's it yeah oh i was just saying we uh we were in the we're doing the podcast but we were talking about family and we were doing we're doing the podcast right now and we were talking about family so we wanted to check in with you wait matthew hold on we can't facetime we can't face that means you have the world's most requested guest back on yeah she's a fan favorite i told i was just telling her she's a fan favorite maybe not after today.

56:02Rob Lowe:No, it's fun. Yeah. Matthew? It's a good time. Did Johnny pick up or no? I know. You're our first call. We're going to call Johnny afterwards. What should I ask her in front of all of the listeners and watchers? It should be a competition on who picks up on what ring. What? What's that? I don't understand. What? It should be a competition. Who picked up quicker? Me or him? No, Dad's asking you what he should ask me. Yeah, I'm asking, not what I should ask. What you should ask mom. Sorry, it's a little bit bad service. I'm walking the streets of Beverly Hills to a lunch meeting. Well, pay attention.

56:42Don't just be on your phone. You know, that's how things happen that aren't great. I'm aware of my situations. Okay. You should ask, you should ask her. I'm trying to think what's a great question that you can ask her. You can text me. I want to say this to Matthew on the air. So I'm on. I'll think of something because your last time, your guys' conversation was so natural. It was good. You guys were great. Well, we have known each other a long time. I was going to say, but I'd say it takes 33 years. Okay, good. I'm glad to hear that. Well, maybe 36. But Matthew, I just want to say while you're on the phone, it's fun in front of dad's podcast listeners.

57:19I would ask her how many more dogs is she planning on getting?

57:22Rob Lowe:Oh, that's a good one. Oh, no. I'm going to ask her which dog is her favorite. Okay. All right. We'll call you back. Love you. All right. Bye. What dog is your favorite? We have six dogs. I don't have a favorite. I'm not going to say that. I mean, I do, but I don't want to face that. I think you do. Was it Daisy? I think it's Daisy. But then my heart hurts when I see Oscar too. I'm so happy. And I love Bob T. And I love Owen. And Bella's getting so old. And she's so sweet. And then Olive, she's the sweetest. But she's just not given as much attention as a young girl her age should be getting. but Daisy's my girl.

58:01I know she looks at me like, Mommy, you're everything. Yeah, she's a good girl. And it's the daughter I never had.

58:07Rob Lowe:The daughter you never had. All right, speaking of not having a daughter, let's go. Oh, okay. What is it? We are going to go to Johnny and see if we can get him. Hey, Siri, FaceTime Johnny Lowe. You there? Yeah, hey, what's up? Can I call you back there or something up? Well, we're in the middle of the podcast and we wanted to talk to you on the podcast.
