In short

The hosts recap “Retro Truck Show” weekend, focusing on the atmosphere, the work behind preparing classic trucks, memorable moments driving/starting old Volvos, and the social CB-community side of the event. They also discuss the show’s retro/modern balance and the “20 years old = retro” cutoff.

Guests

No formal guests. Hosts are Trucker Squeaky (speaking), Jim Boy (speaking), and Matt Ireland (absent due to being “cream crackered” after work). They mention several attendees as part of the story: Simon (drives Jim’s motorhome), Ben (records snippets; drives Matt’s truck into the show), Dazzle (drives/helps with a truck), Graham (offers beer; jumpstart confusion), Johnny from CVA (films and mans the stand), Andy and Wendy Frood (Thomas Bores), June (Canadian female trucker), Paul (June’s husband; Volvo owner), Kevin O’Sullivan (CB contact), Freddie Parker (142 owner), and various CB group friends (e.g., Toffee, Erica, Colgate, Vicky, Ian/Erica, Trev/Kim, Charlie/Nora/Abby, Alan “Trucking with Alan”).

Key claims

Retro shows are best for relaxed camaraderie; polishing/cleaning is self-satisfaction; modern trucks are acceptable if not dominating; clean-air/Euro rules reduce older trucks on UK roads; retro cutoff is 20 years.

Notable examples

Jim drives/experiences Matt’s left-hand-drive Volvo Aero; starting old trucks produces “blue smoke” and “smell of old” vehicles; June spots Volvo registration G500 GKK (her husband’s restored truck); Freddie Parker’s Scania 142 idles on Saturday; discussion of specific trucks like Knowles’ Scania 142, a 1998 FH 16 520 from Istanbul (Bilek), and Tony Knowles’ classic fleet auction via CVA.

0:01Mat Ireland:Hello everybody and welcome to Mat's Trucking Great podcast. It's me, Trucker Squeaky, and I am joined by my fellow trucker, Jim Boy. Hello mate.

0:11Jim:How are you mate? You alright? I'm alright mate, yeah. All good mate, I'm all good, thank you.

0:14Mat Ireland:It's important that I must get this across early out the gate that sadly Mat cannot be with us today. It's a shame because obviously normally he's at the helm and he sees us through all these recordings of the podcast and all that sort of jazz. but he's actually laid up in bed because he's done more than three hours work today and so he's absolutely cream crackered.

0:40Mat Ireland:So, without further ado, here he is, the man himself, Mr Matt Ireland. How are we, Matt? Tired. Just managed to get myself out of bed. So you're going to have to stop this yawning because you're going to set us all off.

0:57Squeaky:I know, mate, I know, I know. I'll punch through for the listener. You know me. Ever the professional.

1:05Mat Ireland:Cheeky kids.

1:09Mat Ireland:Listen, let's jump straight into it today. Normally we sort of go on a little bit and talk about nothing, don't we, for the first 10 minutes. But this week's topic, as it's so fresh in the brain, because we've all just come back from there, we're talking about the retro show. So for me, that is the pinnacle show of the year. It's so relaxed. I really enjoy it. The atmosphere is absolutely fantastic. Seeing all the old trucks there as well is great. Listening to the stories, especially from the Irish fellas and all that sort of stuff, it's absolutely fantastic. So I'll come to you first, Jim. Yeah.

1:46Mat Ireland:You was there. You enjoyed it. I was there, Mike.

1:49Jim:Yeah, and this was really the proper outing for the old motorhome. I've got my friend Simon to drive it there for me, which is what a fabulous friend he is to do that. But, yeah, got there a bit late than I expected on Friday. But, you know, as soon as I'm going off the roundabout, they've got the people taking photographs of my same respect Volvo. You know, they thought I was delivering something. But, yeah, you know, pulling into that little car park, seeing all the low loaders in there, and everybody's got their trailers for Monday morning, you know, seeing a few old wagons, and then going into the main sort of holding area and, you know, seeing people that I've seen over the years, they're like, hello, Jim, how are you, mate, and all that.

2:28Jim:You know, the part that's the Dave the Potato Man, you know, doing his 92 scanner or 93 scanner, yeah. Hello, mate, he's got his intervals on, he's got his... The whole place smells of pink, doesn't it? Yeah. And other stuff, but yeah, it's just getting buzzing. What do we do now? Do I clean this bit? Do I clean that bit? I'm doing my tyres I don't know but once we got inside he didn't touch them so but yeah it's honestly mate I just love it I love the retro but it's just I do it's just the best

2:57Mat Ireland:what about you Matt yeah you was there as well obviously you brought you brought your three trucks and we obviously did all the hard work for you and took them off the trailers and

3:06Squeaky:well someone's got to delegate haven't they at the end of the day yes you don't have a dog and bark yourself as they say but and in my defence as well because you obviously put a video up on tiktok of me uh who i was very graciously given a beer by uh by friend of the podcast here we go the excuses are starting now here we go now now now i had already taken off one ratchet strap well because the others were all preoccupied because it was as soon as i pulled in that car park it was like a swarm of locusts you lot would just onto onto it by the time i got to it there's one strap i think that i could undo then pull the ramps out and I had to go and get the jump pack to fire up the 86 and the 88 because both the batteries are knackered I knew that so Graham had a jump pack so I had to go over and liaise with him I had no choice you know I couldn't couldn't get someone else to go off and speak to Graham who they don't they don't know Graham so I have to you know I had to take one of the team go over there and it just so happened but it just so happened he offered me a beer and I don't want to be rude you know because Graham's a listener you know and he enjoys it and and it would be If I turn around and say, no, I don't want one of your beers, Graham, that would be, in my eyes, rude.

4:16Squeaky:So I had to take it. You're essentially saying it's Graham's fault. Oh, 100%, yeah. It's not my fault that I got given a beer, is it? You can't blame me for that. So anyway. It's great, Graham. And ironically, then I don't think he can find the jump pack, so he brought the 143 over to jumpstart off of them instead. So, yeah.

4:36Jim:Did you assist in that as well, Matt, or was it Dazzle? Dazzle jumped in.

4:40Squeaky:yeah yeah yeah so he was yeah he was there first you know so and he's a big lad and I don't want to try and push him out of the way yeah that'll hurt so I know I know when he when if someone says no you step back and enjoy your beer Matt you know I know when to step back I don't think

4:58Mat Ireland:anybody did say that though did they did you say

5:02Jim:did you say that Jim no I did but I do remember Dazzle saying why are these straps made of cardboard yes they're not

5:11Squeaky:they're not overly used is the is the answer so but yeah it was it was fantastic and like squeaky saying there just the smell the smell of that old free series and then firing up the 86 and the 88 and just the blue smoke just wafting across everybody it's just

5:28Jim:like everything's gone tingly again it was incredible

5:32Squeaky:wasn't it

5:32Mat Ireland:it really was

5:33Jim:incredible grown men wafting in like the smell of these lorries being started that was just amazing. Oh, it was great. You don't get that anymore.

5:42Mat Ireland:There's a little snippet. I put a video on my TikTok that I put together of us going in and that sort of stuff. And just for the listener's sake, Jim was there with her daughter, with her, with his daughter, and she was there with her boyfriend. And so Ben, he's called Ben. Ben came in the truck of Matt's that I took into the show. And I asked him to try and get a couple of recordings and a little couple of snippets of me driving it. but it was very dark and I only really got one of, but I was just beaming from ear to ear in this left-hand drive, the gear stick in my hand, you know. It was just the smells and everything and Ben said to me, he's got his phone out and he's sort of trying to look at all the dials and the switches and everything and bless him.

6:30Mat Ireland:He said, I said, what's the matter, are you okay? And he said, where's the switch to put the window down?

6:37Squeaky:I did check and there is one on the dashboard there is one on there yeah but it's on the dashboard and not the door and you need to know because I know the truck I knew afterwards of course because I don't think that's the driver's one isn't wind down either is it I think that's on the switch as well no drive was it wind down driver's side wind down and it's a bit posh passenger side is electric electric whereas so obviously squeaky so I I drove the F16 up there with an 88 and an 86 on the back because they they're all auctioned last weekend we'll get onto that in a bit so obviously rather than me just drive one down bring it back up walk back up it's just much easier to get the others to drive them I mean Jim really didn't want to have a go in the 86 he was really unbothered you know

7:26Jim:I mean that vehicle has got no affection to me at all no I'll junk

7:32Squeaky:I'll junk in it you know

7:33Jim:rubbish power steering, manual gearbox, no roof in it. The lights were terrible. I mean, yeah. But apart from every single sinew in my body beaming from ear to ear and just fantastic memories of my lovely dad and to have my daughter in the cab with me as well. I couldn't speak. I didn't know what I was doing. I didn't chance a range change because I thought, do you ask the instructions, don't install it, Jim. So I took it around the car park and it's just I mean even sitting here now I am what an absolute I don't think I'll ever get to do that again and I can't thank you enough Matt and Ben as well for letting me do that it's brought back obviously losing dad earlier in the year as well and I'm sure he's watching over me going in there with Erin and Erin was smiling oh my god dad how did you and Pops used to stay in here for a week well we did

8:23Squeaky:I don't know

8:24Jim:but it's just I can't I really can't thank you enough for that opportunity and by the way that's the most sober I've been on Friday night

8:35Jim:I see Lee Herbert when he's putting it in, he went, well, I didn't know you were driving it, Jim. I was like, it's a sober or something, so we'll have to make up for it, and we'll get on to that in a minute as well. We certainly did, so yeah, it was fabulous. Just thank you, Matt, for that. Thank you.

8:47Squeaky:No, not a problem at all. And the aforementioned Dazzle took the 88 in. Oh, my God. I could sit in the passenger seat and squeak you, like we say, took the F-16, and that's just – the F-16, that's my all-time ultimate favourite truck. But obviously I got to drive it there and back, so just driving it down the ramp was just like, well, just let someone else do it. It doesn't bother me. It was amazing.

9:09Jim:If the retro had finished then, well, piled it up, I would have still got to unbeam it. Yeah. It went on a little bit.

9:16Mat Ireland:Isn't it weird? I mean, I'm not from that generation of drivers. I was around that with my dad, but I was a child. So although you're aware of the older trucks and how things work and operate, and, you know, I've never, in a professional capacity, I've never been in that sort of vehicle, you know, as a driver. I've only ever been a kid inside one of them. So to jump in it and just be like, wow, you know, just for me I'm absorbing it all, looking at the bunk and the cupboard space and seeing things differently as how I did when I was a child and thinking, and also now aware of the technologies of what I've got in this fabulous Volvo Aero that I'm in at the moment.

10:03And it's just like, they're just worlds apart.

10:06Jim:And I just think that must have been hard work. It was, yeah, driving that, eating a load of bottle sheets, you know, even the braking on it and stuff. I remember the dead man, oh, I couldn't move it on Sunday because Matt put the dead man on, I realised. But yeah, just the cumbersome gearbox, the clutches up round by your chin, the steering wheel resistances from your belly.

10:32Squeaky:I mean, even driving the F-16 up there and back was pretty hard work because there's no cruise control. And again, that clutch is pretty hard. And you've got to – they just don't accelerate like a modern auto. So you've really got to plan a gap because you're then starting off and then your gear changes as well in that gap to get your momentum going and whatnot.

10:53Mat Ireland:And without realising as well, you are keeping them revs built up. And this surprised me. It's something I wanted to talk about. In between a gear change, you naturally tap the accelerator to keep the revs built up. Give it a little blip, yeah. And that just comes naturally. You don't even think about that, do you? You know, if you stuck a complete rookie or an amateur in there and went, right, off you go, it would set off in second, fire it up, go for a gear change. the revs would die off by the time he's found third he's lost it it's gone possibly yeah yeah i was thinking about that because i'm as we were driving along i kept just tapping it tapping the accelerator but that was through excitement of listening to the engine and the noise and the slight wobble as it as it revs and things you know yeah but then when i sort of got out of it i'm walking away i was processing it thinking yeah you don't even think about that how you just naturally tap you know just because like a like a drummer isn't it who can just do everything with his drums and it's with his feet and his hands and everything you're doing the same but yeah in a

11:59Squeaky:truck yeah and it's quite i was quite surprised that the muscle memory coming back as well for the gig because it's was that three over three box so just just getting straight back because it's the same i think it's the same as a scania 4 series i had many years ago because all the dafts i had had said f4 over four so 16 speed so it was just although occasionally i drive it i as a side I would drive a DAF with a 3 over 3 ZF box and that used to proper throw me because I'd go for that gear that's just not there but I always found a 16 speed better than the 12 speed in my humble opinion but we are we're drifting off the subject there we'll go back to that another day so uh but yeah it was it was great fun and Johnny from CVA who's a top man he listens to this as well he was down he filmed us taking it off and taken down there and then he was on the stand the whole weekend looking after people's questions and getting people to sit in and stuff

12:49Jim:like that he was busy he was busy even when he was trying to pack we didn't dazzle helping him pack the trailer up yeah yeah still with pictures and and stuff like that ready to ready to go real a real you know an honest guy look you in the eye shake your hand to genuine yeah really cool

Read the full transcript

13:03Mat Ireland:he had a real friendly face as well like one of those like real approachable person as well wasn't he yeah in fact actually i might ask him if he does listen to this will you send me any snippets and videos that you did get of us coming in and out and of the trucks that we took down that we took and your trucks that we took in there yeah yeah i'll put a little piece together we'll put it on the podcast page and and my face my tiktok page as well that'd be good yes mate yeah

13:29Squeaky:yeah so yeah we had to make sure we get in position properly because obviously didn't have to start jumpstarting the 86 and 88 again to move them so once they were once they're all lined up and jim had sort of calmed down enough to get out the cab they were sort of

13:42Jim:they were in position that was that wasn't it really for front I bit my lips so much I've given myself a cold sore I was so nervous you know

13:51Mat Ireland:I remember going up to the cab door and being like this is an amazing squeak

13:55Jim:I know right yeah I could see the

13:57Mat Ireland:excitement in your face you were like a little puppy dog

13:59Jim:yeah I've got to get Dan McNulty now I'm getting his 10 and then I'm done then I'll just pack up

14:07Squeaky:off into the sunset in your motorhome

14:09Jim:exactly yeah but that whole set up when you first that whole set up when you first going in and all that you seeing them you know because you get to get in that area first it's just fabulous isn't it you know so but yeah then we're in really aren't we and then walk up the hill to Stalag Luft sorry the campsite

14:28Mat Ireland:and yeah

14:28Jim:it's good so it's good and then that was sort of Friday night really wasn't it a few beers

14:33Mat Ireland:I like the Friday bit I like that bit where do you know what all week all I looked forward to was just getting there and then you're hoping that the planners are giving you a decent run to get you in and get you, you know what I mean, so that you're in nice and early.

14:48Squeaky:Because you didn't have a particularly good one, though, did you, Squeaky? Although you were there in a good time.

14:53Mat Ireland:Well, yeah, it turned out the timing that I had for the delivery wasn't great. I think it was a four o 'clock tip. And then by the time I had got it off, then got the truck washed somewhere, then got up to Gaden from I think yeah Basingstoke something like that yeah Basingstoke it was it was going to be a it was going to be a bit of a bad one but luckily I managed to get in early sweet talk the guy at Goods Inn and yeah I was in and out so I did alright in the end

15:23Jim:and getting in the show itself Joe Joe and the rest of the family the guys they're all friends and family that work they just they got us in the best they could didn't they there was people yeah brilliant your own position it was just it was perfect

15:35Mat Ireland:really really good it really it really is good that that section there um i just want to talk about the obviously the members of the public that just go and walk around these places don't really maybe don't perhaps realize the hard work and the time that goes into the preparation of beforehand so like being put in that holding area before they actually open the showground to allow you in that for me that is also part of the show that is like that everyone's there you've all had a long week at work you've all been away all week you're away from your families and all that sort of stuff i know the thing every every you sort of get there you ditch your trailer in the trailer park you go into the holding area the handbrake goes on the card comes out grab a beer out the fridge, pair of rubber gloves on, cleaning box out the side locker, let's get cracking.

16:30Mat Ireland:And just milling around and just standing back and looking and seeing all these other people, all these other drivers that are there doing the exact same thing. They're all running a rag around, cleaning, polishing, applying tyre shine and all that sort of stuff. and I just sort of photographed that in my mind as I sort of walking around my own truck polishing it and I just think you rather get it or you don't. You know, and everybody that's there, they get it.

17:03Squeaky:And the difference is as well, we've said this time and again, they're all doing that just because they love doing that to their trucks because there's no trophies to be won. So you're not gaining anything by polishing the life out of your truck for the weekend, other than self-satisfaction, essentially. And I'll never get why people knock other people doing it. I don't, you know, if people like to do that, what's the problem? I really don't understand. You do get people, don't you?

17:33Mat Ireland:Truck show's not for me. If I wanted to see trucks, I would walk around. Oh, actually, funnily enough, I was just going to say, how weird's this? I've seen comments before where people have said, if I wanted to see trucks, I'd go and walk around a truck stop on a night time.

17:47Squeaky:Yeah.

17:49Mat Ireland:Just before we came on to record, there was a bloke and his young son that must have been maybe 13-year-old that were walking around the truck park taking pictures of trucks.

17:59Squeaky:Yeah.

17:59Mat Ireland:And they came up and said hello, and I gave him a couple of stickers and all that sort of stuff.

18:03Squeaky:Yeah.

18:04Mat Ireland:And, yeah, I told him all about the podcast. This young lad wants to be a lorry driver when he's older. he's big into trucks so I didn't catch his name but this is a shout out to him because I did tell him about the podcast and you've got to listen to the podcast

18:18Squeaky:so where are you parked tonight then Squeaky just I'm at Chesterfield Junction 29 oh Junction 29 oh come on I've been there for a while that's alright

18:27Mat Ireland:that was alright

18:27Squeaky:I presume it still is

18:29Mat Ireland:yeah they've just had the showers and everything all refurbed and what have you so that's really good the showers are great

18:36Jim:it was better in the 90s when the upstairs was like Matt wasn't it you know what I mean well

18:41Squeaky:being as I left school in the late 90s I can't remember oh right okay not as old as you

18:50anyway

18:52Squeaky:yeah we're digressing slightly but yeah hopefully he'll be listening and if he finds us on the socials he can let us know who he is and send us a picture of your truck that he took yeah I presume he took but anyway yeah he asked me

19:06Mat Ireland:he did say to me oh I'll be putting it on my TikTok tonight if that's okay and i said yeah yeah yeah and i let him climb up and have a look inside and you know told him all about it yeah yeah you crack it lovely to see because we've said this before but we sort of most people come into this industry i think because the dads are drivers or the granddad was drivers or or the oh yeah or the mom or something like that and but this guy dad wasn't driver but yet the young son just had this fascination for trucks so yeah nice to see nice to see anyway let's talk about let's talk about saturday night this is the pinnacle night now isn't it right we'll skip a saturday day are we that we'll skip the whole day well yeah we could talk about saturday day if you want there's a lot of milling around saturday

19:54Squeaky:day isn't that i think saturday is still essentially set up day it's not although there was a problem do come in not everything is there and the main show as such is the Sunday so there is stuff turning up throughout most of the day a lot of cleaning stuff like that going on you know again Johnny was doing a fine job of cleaning bench trucks whilst I was networking

20:20Jim:holding beers what you mean me making you egg and cheese sandwiches you mean

20:25Squeaky:you made me an egg and cheese roll yeah Jim that was very nice was that Saturday or Sunday

20:29Jim:Oh, whatever. I think he'd come up twice. But it's interesting when the guys are coming in on the Saturday morning, whatever time the gate's open, the unit only, you've got the guys with the Rolls Royces and the Cummins, solo, Revenard, and then the Jake break. I've got a Jake break. And everyone does, and I go, yes, I love the Jake break.

20:52Mat Ireland:It's brilliant.

20:53Jim:But, yeah, we did have a sort of walk round on Saturday, but like you say, mate, he's just got a shaking hands meeting. I met a couple of listeners Andy and Wendy he works for that Dutch sounding company they're a really great company Andy his wife Wendy, remember them this week? Yeah I do

21:12Mat Ireland:I'm trying to think of the name we went for a beer with them

21:17Jim:Andy Frood Andy Frood

21:22Squeaky:works for Thomas Boars

21:24Jim:Thomas Boars

21:25Squeaky:who are a Dutch company I was going to say I was going to say

21:29Jim:that swear word but I'm wondering we got there in the end and you know

21:33Mat Ireland:this guy this guy took us and bought us all a pint as well and we sat and had a pint with him and his wife we carry on

21:39Squeaky:what company he works for which we which we should have done because obviously me and Alex talked about them very recently on our on our fleet episode and they are Thomas Bores is one of the top fleets again in my opinion in the UK so yeah it's great yeah great to catch up with Andy finally more of him another, well not so much him but something else, another day I've just remembered something but yeah there's quite a few people came and said hello and they listened to the podcast and enjoyed it and whatnot so

22:07Jim:the standard of vehicles this year as well I thought was outstanding as well I mean there were some missing obviously some companies missing for one reason I've nice to see Knowles' Scamble there that made it there this year because I've actually did the last bit and that 142 of A &M commercials I think won the Charles Russell trophy that's it yeah It's just like it rolled out of the Scania factory two hours before it arrived there. And there was another one there from who make the wheels? Tire tracks. Yeah, tire tracks. Amazing. Did you? And what about the guy from Turkey?

22:38Squeaky:Yeah, Billek. Yeah. 1998.

22:42Jim:What was it? 1998 FH version? Oh, no. I remember that.

22:45Squeaky:Only that. Yeah, version 1 FH 16 520 from Istanbul.

22:50Mat Ireland:Amazing. Yeah. The guys that were sat at the back of the trailer when we went past on the night time. Yeah, that's right.

22:57Jim:I said, go on, sweet guy, I'll come over with you. And then I disappeared. Fancy that.

23:02Squeaky:Fancy that.

23:03Jim:I thought I was going to get my hair cut, but they didn't offer that service. But yeah, that truck is a,

23:11Squeaky:the boss man was there driving it and he was basically doing a nostalgia trip in it because it's obviously, to get from Turkey to the UK, when he tipped in Scotland with the Euro zones and whatnot it's going to cost him way more in a vintage truck but he just wanted to do it and it just he spoke with Justin Warrior and it just so happened that he was then going to be heading back over the retro weekend so Justin's like you've got to come along to that you know just you've got to so it was just kind of sort of by coincidence and he just ended up coming along and yeah what a chance what luck and one of his other drivers was there as well there's only one of them spoke a little bit of English the others didn't speak any unfortunately but But funny enough, they are very big on TikTok, apparently.

23:51Squeaky:So I've got him to add... I now follow him. I'll have to send you a link because I can't remember what it's got. I think it's Gotlandbilek, I think, something like that. But I'll send a link and forever we'll put it in the show notes so people can find it. That was an absolutely stunning Volvo, it really was. But it still works, apparently, internally within Turkey. So it's not a show party.

24:12Jim:And having it parked next to Bert's truck, and it's lovely to see his dad there as well. yeah having two trucks probably from the same age in the same distance whatever it's got FH12 but

24:22Squeaky:yeah

24:23Jim:it's still what a show nice to see Richard Payne there as well yeah I saw Richard quick work with him he just yeah I just love that walking around and all that and Owens as well were there with a guy that's in the guy that's in the mobility scooter I've forgotten his name I can't remember his name

24:42Squeaky:oh yeah

24:43Jim:on the tip on the tip Is it Damien? No. No, it's... I can't remember, but yeah, what a smashing guy. Yeah. But yeah, it's just... When's the next one? Can we not do one next April?

24:56Mat Ireland:I'll tell you what I did miss. I think you caught up... You did catch up with him, Jim, and I was really looking forward to seeing him again this year because I was introduced to him last year.

25:08Jim:Yeah, the guys with the...

25:10Mat Ireland:With the American RV and the...

25:12Jim:Yeah, she made a beeline for me.

25:15Mat Ireland:the Renault Magnum and it's like a little smart car on the back of the catwalk of the Magnum and then they tow an American RV type fifth wheel trailer thing. And I met them last year and you know what? Such beautiful down-to-earth people. They were so welcoming, so nice. And he took me in and showed me around both. I wanted to get in the Magnum because that was my first ever truck. So he let me climb up in there. and then he took me around the trailer as well they live in that full time really? yeah, took me in there and showed me in there that was amazing, that was unbelievable it is literally just a house on wheels, it was just out of this world and so all year I was really looking forward to thinking, because I really clicked with him and they were just nice people I thought I'm going to make an effort and go and see him and say hello and all that, and I missed him Jim saw him and I

26:13Jim:They did ask where you were, to be fair.

26:15Mat Ireland:Oh, bless them. The thing is that the weekend goes so quick, doesn't it?

26:23Squeaky:You just, you know, that's half the problem. But, yeah, going back to walking about, it was lovely to see the Charles Russell collection as well out again. And the whole lot as well. The boys brought the whole lot down. It was really, really nice because Charles absolutely loved that show. He really did. I do miss the old boy. but yeah and I don't think a lot of people realise that the Benetton livery scanner on the end was also one of his because they bought it off Benetton and when they restored they put it back in their colours

26:52Jim:it's just when we're walking past him now what's that one and then you inform me about it it's just it's just amazing it's like I'm not a kid in a candy shop now I mean my mate Bill said he's going to make me some reins out of a couple of ratchet straps because I am away and I'll ask can I sit in here can I do this can I you know do it though obviously respectful never climb over vehicles without having an invite into them and that and asking questions and stuff but the standard these retro trucks now are just so good I mean if I had the money you know and the space and the time and the effort I would love to do up an old FL10 or an F10 would that be

27:33Squeaky:would that be the number one or am I chopping on Squeaky's thoughts here

27:38Mat Ireland:no yeah well no I was got Sorry, what I was going to say, we're there when he started speaking about Volvos. I think we should tell the story about our friend June and what happened there. Yes. So I'll give a little background on June, and then Jim, I'll hand over to you to tell the story. So we met, June is obviously a female trucker. She lives out in Canada. She does US and Canada. Yeah, proper trucker. You know, like these huge, great, big bullnose leading American trucks. They're unbelievable. But we all met through the CB app that Jim always bangs on about. And so June joined that. She came onto our channel and we've made friends and we've been friends ever since.

28:25Mat Ireland:And so she travels across from Canada to the UK and comes to the retro show to see us all over the weekend. And it is just absolutely mind blowing. in anyway june's there where we said right should we go and stretch out we're sat up at the campsite um around the the caravans and tents and should we go and stretch our legs and have a little walk around and um yeah jim i'll let you tell the story yeah so basically june and i walked down

28:54Jim:because there was a road jim jimmy odore from from edmonton it's got like a a waste away company like muck away company and he does collect retro retro trucks and we've got something to squeak night um we were we were parked where he wanted to put all his lorries so squeaky night we moved with no problem but i got to drive that maggie doitz tonight the paul knows one just a bit which was just another phenomenal experience in the truck show but so we walked down i got threatened talking we were talking to jimmy and what what an absolute smashing down down to earth guy and uh june and i walked down to these row of trucks and we were talking about you know she was talking about her husband Paul out there and how they bought a brand new Volvo and she said the registration F500 GKK and we're walking through and we saw the back of the truck but I think the back of the truck might have been on tray plates and we walked down the left driver side of it and she turned around and went oh my god Jim that's it and we both turned around my hairs have gone up again by the way and there it is G500 GKK the truck the actual truck from new when they were doing swinging me and hanging me to germany uh from from kent and places like that but and i've got i'm looking actually looking at a photograph of her now that smart she's beaming but unfortunately the driver didn't the driver was not about to give the keys and he told us to hang around we were doing some other stuff and i got to jump in it the next day i'd done a video of the inside of the truck which was a single sleeper but yeah she just kept saying oh my god and then we got another guy on the CBA called Kevin Kevin O'Sullivan he had a 143 back in the day and I think Heverins are doing it up and Heverins have got two 143 500s there but they weren't ones that you drove them but yeah it was a real moment

30:55Mat Ireland:obviously I was with you there at that time where we walked through the trucks. I just wish, for whatever reason, I'd have been recording it. That reaction on June's face, literally, I was slightly in front, and June and Jim are shoulder to shoulder sort of shuffling in between these two trucks, and as we walked around the front of them, and after she's literally reading or saying out aloud the number plate, and then she turned and looked. And it was there. And it was just like, I thought she was winding me up. At first, I was like, are you joking? You winded me up. Are you serious? She's like, no.

31:39I was like, what are the chances?

31:42Jim:That's mad, isn't it? And she did mention as well that Paul put the two Volvo badges on the front. He had the lower mud flaps at the front of the truck saying Volvo. I think they changed the sun visor for a different colour. Everything else was the same. It even had the original headlining in it. Blimey. You know, I mean, I said, oh, you've touched this button, June. I've touched this button. You've put the wipers on to put the taco in, June, and all this. But yeah, I got really emotional for her as well.

32:16Mat Ireland:Yeah, that was a nice moment, that. I wish that would have been captured. I know we got some pictures and stuff, but that actual moment of the realisation, and you could see it in her eyes, that was a beautiful moment. Because that will never happen again.

32:28Jim:and then she said oh well we're going to look at these birds yeah

32:33Mat Ireland:yeah

32:35Squeaky:she also mentioned Kevin Ryan who works there he's a he's a listener of the podcast as well he enjoys it so yeah he was looking after so are they keeping the McGovern's McGeeris in McGovern's colours then Jim do you know

32:50Jim:Jim he said he was yes right cool yeah he did say that that was that was interesting to drive

32:56Squeaky:yeah I bet

32:57Jim:But also June's got an invite. Whenever she's in London, she can go down and see the truck as well. I saw that on his Facebook page, Kevin's Facebook page. But yeah, at the moment, I actually interrupted Jimmy while I was – I've got some – you can see I saw it on Port Natalia, and he was like, oh, my God, and there was loads of history. What are the Trevor Francis Chancellor era? It's wonderful, isn't it? Absolutely mental.

33:26Mat Ireland:Yeah. Yeah, definitely. It was a real moment. It was a really, really good moment. Yeah. One thing I want to just touch slightly, we won't go into it too much, but that's because obviously we spoke to Alex today who couldn't make it for the recording, but some people have an opinion that modern trucks shouldn't be at the retro truck shell. Now, I disagree with that. Personally, my opinion is I like to say as long as the balance is not as long as there's a nice, even balance. So as long as the majority are still retro trucks and the slightly modern trucks that are there are not taking the forefront and they're not in the main arena and they're slightly set back and, you know, that sort of thing.

34:18Mat Ireland:I think it's fabulous to go and see say you know for example the first ever Volvo that was ever built you can walk around and see maybe four or five different variations and then come up towards the top on the hill where me and Jim Park and you can see Jim's Volvo and my Aero and just be like that's incredible we've seen every Volvo not every but you know what I'm trying to say

34:41Squeaky:yeah yeah definitely I know that people complain

34:44Mat Ireland:but I think personally as long as the modern trucks are sort of taking the backseat and they're not in the main event, I think there's nothing wrong with that.

34:57Squeaky:I was going to say, I think that's probably the biggest complaint Lee gets is there's too much modern stuff there. But it's a very, at the end of the day, you're never going to please everyone. Same with this podcast. We're never going to please everybody all the time. That's just impossible. Also, if you've got a sponsor turning up with six or seven trucks that sponsored your show, you can't turn around and say, yeah it's great but you can't bring them in they've got to stay up out the way sort of thing and it it does seem that they do try and put the more modern stuff up the top sort of not out the way but they're not around the museum itself as such yeah yeah and also to to actually completely

35:30Mat Ireland:fill that area with retro trucks would be very difficult because i said the same thing yeah that's it there's an awful lot turn up but you just there's other stuff going on at the same time and not everybody will enjoy that show for whatever reason

35:44Squeaky:or they're too far away, so on and so forth. So I don't think retro trucks miss out and don't get booked in because of it, I don't think. But you're never going to know for certain, are you? And an awful lot of people leave it too late. I did speak to a good friend of mine because I noticed his trucks weren't there this year. And when I messaged him, he said, yeah, left it too late. And then there was a space, but then we only had a week's notice. That was sort of not enough time. so right you know

36:12Jim:well the Coles and Sons do I mean they're a big sponsor in the local all year as well that's it Lee himself well Lee used to work

36:20Squeaky:Lee used to work with them at night

36:22Jim:exactly yeah so but it's I think the balance is fine to be fair I mean last year my friend Adie bought that massive crepe bean cherry picker do you remember that

36:32Squeaky:yeah yeah I mean

36:33Jim:why we did not want to see that 127 metres of reach or something whatever yeah

36:39Squeaky:I wish I'd gone up in that I really do well I arrange for our friends to go up in that

36:44Jim:but but yeah it's just it is I like the mix anyway because I like some of the modern paint work and the modern artwork that people can produce

36:52Squeaky:oh yeah I mean

36:53Jim:along with the hand sign writing that people still do in these old trucks and stuff yeah yeah

36:58Squeaky:I mean I in an ideal world if you could literally fill it with retro trucks that would be for me but then that's for me but not for for some of the younger generation yeah they prefer to see some of the more modern stuff.

37:11Jim:They want to hear the V8s, not the revving. They want to see the V8s. They want to see, you know, they want to see the, not hear the air horns, but when you leave. Kids love all that. And this is why they stand on motorway bridges, is to see these, oh, no, not retro trucks, but for modern trucks to blast the air horns and take, like, squeaky at night, take photographs off. So this guy would have had the opportunity, the guy you met tonight, squeaky, would have had the opportunity to take photographs of old trucks.

37:36Squeaky:He would have loved all that. But it's also the attachment that people have. Like Jim is obviously massively emotionally attached to an F86 because of the memories it evokes and whatnot. To me, the 86 is an absolutely iconic truck because it's basically the truck that destroyed the British truck building industry, didn't it? That came along, revolutionised it, destroyed it all. But I've got no emotional attachment to an 86, whereas the F16, that's the truck I wanted growing up. So that's, you know, given the choice, the 86, the 88, the 16, and I'll take that 16. Absolutely. Whereas Jim's got that emotional attachment, so...

38:13Squeaky:I turned it down. I did have a go in it. This episode of Matt's Trucking Rep podcast is kindly brought to you by CVA Auctions. CVA are handling the sales of part of Tony Knowles' classic fleet, and boy, is there some classics in there. This sale is almost exclusively old British trucks, including one which is a Rutland Chinese Six, which must nearly be one of a kind by now. there's plenty to choose from and they're all available to see on cva's website the auction itself will be on the 10th of october starting at 9 30 and i believe it's on site at tony's place over in cambridgeshire good luck with the sale tony and uh thank you very much for the support cva

38:59Squeaky:so it's yeah like i say you're never ever going to please everybody i think it's a good mix and a good balance but again personally I'd prefer to see more retros there but can you get them there as simple as that and it's better to have a full place that have loads of spaces because you're like no you know yeah and what what is also scary as well that I point out to a lot of people I hope I'm correct in saying this Lee if you are listening but the cut off essentially is 20 years so it's it's not a cut off but basically anything 20 years or older is considered retro for the retro show yeah right We're now in 2026.

39:3720 years ago, digital taxographs came out. Yeah.

39:41Squeaky:That's a scary fact. And so 20 years ago, so what's now considered retro would be like the 105XF, your version, what, 2FH? I don't know. I think the R series Scania was – I think they were still on the 4 series at that point, weren't they? But it's getting to the custom.

39:59Jim:What MP version of Mercedes as well would have been?

40:02Squeaky:Well, yeah, funny enough, I was talking with Luke Power-Hippersley today about MP3s because he saw an Uzbekistan-e registered one in Hamburg. And it looks tidy as, and it's like, you know, you'd probably happily take that truck out and go, whereas at minimum it's 13 years old, if not older.

40:24Mat Ireland:Here's a quick question for you that's just sprung to mind. Yeah. Do you think that if it wasn't for VOSA or DVSAs, what they call themselves this week, or the clean air zones and all that sort of jazz that goes along with it, without getting too political, do you think that if it wasn't for all them rules and regulations being put in place, we would still see some older school trucks still out grafting, still out working, still on the road? 100%.

40:54Squeaky:Without a shadow of a doubt. So, beet season, there's a good chance that MEA's will bring out some of their old ERFs for sugar beet if they're not still working year-round, without wanting to get, again, political and conspiratorial about it. I don't know if you'll remember the fuel strikes of 2000, Squeaky, or not. Yeah, yeah. Well, yeah, I lived in, at the time, I lived in Immingham, next to the oil refinery in Immingham. Yeah, yeah. Now, at that time, loads and loads of people had older trucks. If you sit and think about it, an awful lot of people had older trucks that were bought and paid for, and they could afford to stand them up.

41:27Squeaky:and sit it out for a few days whilst we're trying to get some sort of... So not long after that, then sort of clean air zones and stuff like that start coming in, forcing you into buying new trucks, getting yourself in debt with buying them and purchase agreements, all that sort of thing. All of a sudden, you can't afford to go on strike, other than they've made it legal as well. But you can't afford to stand a truck up, can you? No, that's right. And the irony is, obviously, all these clean air zones and the Euro Emission Zones and whatnot. We have all these trucks. We have them for about five years.

41:59Squeaky:We ship them to Africa, to Russia, all these places, and they just carry on driving about.

42:05Mat Ireland:Yeah, crazy, isn't it?

42:06Squeaky:Yeah, yeah, yeah. But, yeah, it's – so, yeah, like, certainly around my way, you'll see a lot more older trucks. I saw an 05-plate Mercedes Tipper today. So what's that, 21 years old? Just still happily – you know, it couldn't do around Jim's way. It just wouldn't be able to go very far, would it? but obviously being from Lincolnshire myself,

42:28Mat Ireland:well, not from there, but living there, my childhood was in Lincolnshire. So that was the same, you know, all the farm wagons and the beet wagons, sugar beet wagons, anything. They were all old school motors that were running about. And they probably still are now. Obviously, I don't live there. And obviously, being in the haulage industry, we don't really, this sounds awful, but I don't really see that. They're more farm vehicles as opposed to haulage, if that makes sense. If you used to categorize them in your mind.

42:59Squeaky:Yeah.

42:59Mat Ireland:But, you know, like I think if clean air zone and emissions and DVSA and Vosa wasn't a thing and all that sort of jazz, you probably still would see, like you've just said there, these boys will have spent hundreds of thousands of pounds on buying these motors, keeping them on the road, keeping them maintained. you know and all that sort of stuff they'd still have them out working they'd still be oh yeah they'd still be down the road wouldn't they yeah and it's just like like the low emission

43:29Squeaky:zone in london it was i don't know what it's like now but certainly good 10 years ago so not more it was just like the cutoff point it's just like right you know if your vehicle's made before say the first of july whatever it was then it's sort of you've got a pay to come in if it's made after it's fine because it's obviously going to be clean and i know several haulies who had identical fh volvos identical model engine everything but once registered say before july once after one can't go

43:56Mat Ireland:and one can't go in it's just it's complete nonsense yeah it really is so yeah it's we're on a slippery slope to go political so we'll try and avoid that because i don't i don't really

44:07Squeaky:fancy getting into that no no no we don't we don't need to i started to nod then a little bit all the matters of jim jim can get in london and say he's with volvo that's amazing don't expect great, mate, yeah.

44:18Jim:We can change the numbers around on the door. I've got a new set of numbers, number 460. I don't know if we make it at 660 or 006. I don't know yet.

44:26Squeaky:Fair enough. We'll do that. But we still haven't covered Saturday night at Retro yet, have we?

44:32Mat Ireland:Okay, so let's go. What is your favourite, Matt, this is for you, what is your favourite thing or your favourite couple of hours on a Saturday evening at Retro? What's your best thing to do? What do you enjoy the most?

44:47Squeaky:it's got to be hanging around that bar, I think, really, just talking nonsense.

44:54Squeaky:Because that's where everyone congregates, isn't it? Yeah. A lot of the music isn't to my taste, but again, you're never going to please everybody. And Convoy always gets a play, doesn't it? And that always goes down really well.

45:07Mat Ireland:You put in your request, though, for Aqua Barbie Girl, didn't you? I was sure you both put it up.

45:11Squeaky:Yeah, hashtag annoyed. They didn't play that because I'm a big fan of the Swedes. I am, you know. Dr. Jones, Turnback Times. I know all the episodes. Oh, that's great.

45:23Jim:Tressie talked about music. This is the last podcast with Alex. We need to jack up this podcast, the Matt's Trucking Great podcast thing. Yeah. I've got a link ready for Spotify, but we're going to do it. But yeah, the guy that does the Land Rover down there with all the smoke and the lights, that's great. But my highlight for a Saturday night is always, I've done this for the last five, six, seven years, how long I've been going, right? is Freddie Parker's 142 is always sat there idling.

45:50Mat Ireland:Yeah. You know what?

45:52Jim:Clean air zone. I don't think that matters. A little bit of work here. Two fingers up to it. I always go around and I always give the old... And Freddie said to me, go on, Jim, you can get in there, mate. Start up and all that and showing my airing around it and Aaron's going, dad, that's someone's lorry. I'm with me. I'm afraid I can get in here. It's fine. I'm just giving it a little blip and all that and then people poking their heads around and yeah, just Freddie Parker's 142. he's just i absolutely love it um it's i don't know why i'm not really a scania man i'm not but i that one is such a beaut for me yeah he's the two thousand pound in the year two thousand is he always sells me every year and uh and just that walking around especially with my daughter with some photographs squeaky taking some fun i'm always the one taking photographs and this year thanks to my old mate squeak i'm actually in some photographs which is great especially with my daughter as well and then you know my daughter saying to me just me and her on her own and she said to me dad i get why you love this i mean do you know i mean yeah coming from coming from not you know from a decent upbringing in dorchester she said dad i get why you do this she's had the best time you know and ben did her boyfriend as well and also the guy the guys that are part of the GBR group on the CB app, you know, Toffee, Erica, Colgate and Vicky, Billy turned up then in his Land Rover, which is brilliant.

47:16Jim:Dad's army. Just, just brilliant. I've got to give a special mention to Simon as well. Simon, who'd done all my shopping for me, all my chicken sticks, my, my Kansas cider, but you know, he took the van there, he filled it up with diesel. He put, you know, a few, few pounds worth of pressure in one of the tires, you know, and I kicked him out. my daughter said don't worry dad we get a tent and then she went to reading festival the week before which is one of the oh dad everyone else was leaving them behind so i did i went you little so so she slept in here with her boyfriend and then the next night simon was freezing and keeping everybody awake with his snoring so i said right you get in my lorry i'll go in here slow down slow down slow down rewind a little bit right so so jim obviously he he took his volvo his truck

48:05Mat Ireland:his friend and colleague drove his motor home to the truck show on the premise that he could sleep in it and Jim was going to sleep in his truck then Jim's daughter and her boyfriend decided that they were going to stay as well and then and then poor old Simon got the boot so this is the bit that you'd already explained I'm mansplaining now I apologise the bit that you didn't explain is that luckily one of our friends off the cb app ian and his wife erica they were they were there in their uh touring caravan that's got an awning on it and so they said to simon you can sleep in our awning put put an airbed in the awning blah blah blah

48:50Squeaky:now we're all in quite close proximity well they were we're not me and you were down in the trucks

48:55Mat Ireland:a little bit further down the road but simon snored his head off all night he kept everybody awake He did.

49:04Jim:I mean, even Trev and Vicky, sorry, Trev and Kim and the kids were like, oh my God, the roaring and all that. Yeah, a bit funny. And then, of course, Charlie turned up with his little boy, Nora, and his girlfriend, Abby's pregnant as well, expecting another baby on the way. It was just, I mean, forget about the retro, the actual trucks, but the social part of our little clicky group or little group, not a clicky group, but a group. Yeah, even Gromit turned up, Alan's got his own YouTube channel there, Trucking with Alan, which someone might want to tune into. He turned up with his lovely wife.

49:40Jim:It turned up in the most beautiful Union Jack dress, didn't she? These people just fitted straight in, didn't they? It was just so – I mean, the social aspect of our little CB group, we have raised thousands over the years for charity, some close to home and some not close to home. It just, I'm so thankful for a great group of friends that I can actually call friends as well. Just amazing, just amazing weekend. Matt's strolling up with his sunglasses on. Put the pan on, Jim boy. I fancy an egg roll. And then Simon's skull crusher coffee and everybody's wired for like four hours. Yeah, oh, absolutely.

50:22Squeaky:So, Squeaky, what's your favourite part of Saturday night then?

50:25Mat Ireland:My favourite part of Saturday night is being at that little slightly tipsy stage where you're feeling that little bit giddy and it's just gone dark. and you walk down through the show and everyone's got the lights on, the engines are running, the smells of all the diesel and the fumes, the doors open and you poke your head through the door and smell that old leather and, you know, like everyone's there shaking hands, saying hello and just everyone's got a beer in their hand. The spirit of people and just the nostalgia, you know the old school truck songs playing in the background not like truck fest where it's like people are trying to outdo each other with boom boom boom boom music that's not my cup of tea this is like proper class it is just that is my favourite part walking around with a glass of wine in my hand or a bottle of beer or everybody else is doing the same

51:31Jim:one thing that what made my Saturday night really special is was that Lee Herbert promised me a place up on the bank and we spoke on Facebook and WhatsApp and stuff. And I said, I've got a present for you. And I walked down with a case of that Dutch drink, the Fluegel. And he was having, he's having his tea with his lovely wife, Joe and Oscar and Josh and all them. And I plonked this on the table. He gave me the biggest hug. And he went, I'm really sorry he didn't get where you wanted to park, Jim. I just said, mate, I'm part of the show. I love this. just thanks for everything that you organize every year because I absolutely live for this show yeah we should do

52:09Mat Ireland:something next year we'll talk about this off the pod but we should as a group as GBM as the CB group we should do something to say yeah I think so

52:20Jim:I did speak to Lee as well on another bat about Fredfest next year which Matt likes to go to and I've offered my services any one of his vehicles if he needs a pilot for any of his vehicles, especially his new FH, I would gladly, gladly take it down there for him using cruise control and using all the proper driver parameters, I promise.

52:44Squeaky:And not smoking behind the wheel.

52:46Mat Ireland:I don't smoke anyway, Matt. Yeah, yeah.

52:51Jim:I would never do that. But to be given the opportunity to that and also join the truck fest, and not anti-truck fest, probably the wrong word, but people that don't want to go to truck fest go to Fredfest next year, which is growing and growing and growing. And it's a fabulous place to be. It's quite a way to go. It's down there, hiving Folkestone. But I'm all over that next year with the motorized home. And me pig, filthy pig. Dirty pig. How dare you? It's like a mags and pack. But yeah, I'll have the fridge well stocked.

53:25Mat Ireland:And hopefully by then, by that time, you'll have your own tiny team Thumbelina, won't you?

53:30Jim:I don't know what that is, but yeah.

53:33Mat Ireland:You don't know what that is? And you're Max and Paddy. A tiny Tina. Oh, tiny Tina, tiny Tina, oh yeah.

53:41Jim:Sorry, mate, I'll get the reference now.

53:45Mat Ireland:Tiny Tina.

53:49Squeaky:Yeah, oh dear. Oh yeah, I feel sorry, anyone who doesn't know Max and Paddy is probably listening, what on earth are they talking about? But if you don't then go and watch phoenix knights go and watch max and paddy laugh your head off and then

54:04Jim:you'll you'll get it's a reference yeah you'll get an awful lot of my uh references as well that i

54:10Squeaky:make day to day to a lot of people who are just like what is he drawing a dog he's obsessed

54:20Squeaky:ever smelt burning flesh son yeah What about the bean? What about the bean, Squeak?

54:26Mat Ireland:I've gone. I've gone. I need to turn the bike off.

54:36Squeaky:How far away is he? How far away? Hello, he's gone. Is that good? He's gone. I'm on the bus.

54:46Mat Ireland:I'm on the bus.

54:47Squeaky:He's definitely gone. We'll have to wait for Squeaky to rejoin us temporarily. but whilst we wait for that so obviously sadly squeaky he went home there he is there he is

54:58Jim:he's gone back I'm sorry that's alright

55:01Squeaky:oh bless you squeaky oh I'm crying we were just going to say obviously sadly you went home Sunday morning because you've got family and all of stuff like that yeah oh dear but yeah Alex obviously came down for the day to join us and that's when we actually had the podcast group photo, which quite a few people turned up, and I will apologise to Glenn Heskey, because he was there, and Trev's wife cut him out of the picture. You can see his arm.

55:35Mat Ireland:His left arm.

55:36Jim:Oh, no.

55:38Squeaky:Poor old Trev. And I'm having a complete mind-backed, and I can't think what Trev's wife was called, which is really bad.

55:44Mat Ireland:Kim.

55:45Squeaky:So, yeah, she very graciously took the picture because I had all this time to organise it and I didn't actually think about who was actually going to stand there and take the photograph.

55:54Mat Ireland:So when somebody actually said, who's taking the pictures, I was like, oh, I don't know.

55:58Squeaky:I haven't really thought about that. Right, great moment,

56:01Jim:I wouldn't.

56:01Squeaky:Yeah, yeah. So it's like the rest of this podcast, it's all very unplanned and unprofessional. But yeah, obviously Sunday, main show day, sadly obviously squeaky, he's got to go home, actually see his family because he's been away all week. And even still, first thing on the Sunday there's quite a few things turning up. There's a crack in 141 that you wouldn't have seen. Is it Fred Smith?

56:26Mat Ireland:Vehicle records or something like that?

56:28Squeaky:Yeah, absolutely stunning looking truck that was. And various others. So, yeah, that's the main public day as such. So, yeah, just a lot more. I would like to stay more on a Sunday.

56:42Mat Ireland:Yeah, yeah. There's a fine balance, isn't there, between... Well, you've got a wife and kids that you haven't seen. That's right. So you've been away all week. Then you're away all weekend.

56:53Squeaky:Yeah.

56:54Mat Ireland:And it's just like...

56:54Squeaky:So if you don't go home, you're not going to see them until the following weekend. That's right. Yeah. Yeah.

57:01Jim:A lot of us stayed on, didn't we, a little bit? I've got to look at... I don't know his surname, Mark. He's from Aylesbury, and he's got them two American trucks, that Showtime and the one with the Harley on the back.

57:11Squeaky:Right.

57:11Jim:That's the story on its own. There used to be that the Showtime one was part of the NASCAR circuit, and a Mexican family bought it. And, yeah, what a vehicle that is. A stand-up shower, double beds, and walking. It makes my motorhome look like a Bedford Rascal, whatever they were called. But, yeah, just the standard of trucks and the friendliness of everybody. There's never any aggro there, is there? All right, a few of the young lads get a bit tanked up on a Saturday night and start dancing on the dustbins, but who cares? I mean they're doing anybody any arm

57:47Squeaky:yeah no

57:48Jim:no they're not and Lee won't have it will he he's there anyway he's going oh he packed that in or whatever but he didn't need to it's just it's just a fabulous fabulous shot I know we keep saying about it

58:00Mat Ireland:it's like minded people that are all just doing we're all there doing the same thing aren't we yeah like I said right like I said right at the top of the podcast you rather get it or you don't you do might yeah and I think for the entrance

58:14Jim:free as well, squeak. 21 quid, I think it was, for a walk-in. And that gives you, not only the truck show, them two fabulous museums. I've never been to the Jaguar.

58:22Squeaky:That's exactly what I was about to say, is the fact that you can walk around that entire museum as well, which takes quite a lot of time. And it changes and evolves as well every year or two.

58:34Mat Ireland:Yeah, so stuff changes.

58:36Squeaky:So it's worth, and for the last couple of years, I've still not got around to actually wandering around in there.

58:40Jim:And the curators are in there. It only happened, it could ask all sorts of questions. Like the last ever Montego that was ever built. You know, all the workforce has signed it. Yeah, if only it got out on the road, eh? No, exactly. I did it. I had an EFI, one of them, MGEFI. Did you? You want to bet Torx, dear? Oh, my God. I bet he wishes to land it. But I'll tell you one bad thing about the retro, right? Go on. Ice cream's four and a half quid for a small one. Is that bloke having a laugh or what? well he's got to pay

59:12Squeaky:for his pitch hasn't he how much is the pitch

59:14Jim:three million quid

59:15Squeaky:this I don't know I don't know he's got to make a living exactly

59:21Jim:yeah I don't know I was a bit I only say I'd like to buy that five £89.60 I'm like what

59:28Squeaky:that's your own greeny guts isn't it you know just have just have one next year you found it yeah

59:37Jim:how dare you the size of his feast as well was ridiculous but no i i i make it i make a small joke about that but i did think that was a bit expensive but for all in all uh the price of the ticket to get the truck in and for people to walk in that thing to get them to get a whole truck show beautiful weather with nice little oh by the way matt first you haven't been in the museum i haven't been

1:00:00Squeaky:upstairs saw their models oh my god so next year photos yeah yeah oh yeah yeah so so So next year is going to be different because in June up until this year, we've had the CVRTC show at Gaden in June, which has had the UK's biggest truck-only model show. That is now going to move to the retro show next year. So the model show haul will be absolutely brand full of some of the best British truck model builders, as well as trade stands. Again, sellers, vendors, model bits and whatnot. Personally, for me, it's a shame because it's going to be so much to try and do in a weekend. It's going to be ridiculous because I go to the show in June or did for the model show, and the outside stuff is a bit of a bonus, but my main concentration is on the model show, whereas next year I've got to try and split the time between all of it, and it's going to be so difficult.

1:01:03Mat Ireland:It's a shame they can't get it over a bank holiday, really, isn't it?

1:01:06Squeaky:Yeah, but then there's so much. See, if it's the August bank holiday, that rules me out because I do the children's convoy every year. And there's always other stuff going on, isn't there? So it's very difficult. But that's just the way it's gone. We'll see what it's like next year because also I normally go for a meal with the model club that I belong to on a Saturday night. So I think I'll probably do that next year and then just get a cab straight back afterwards rather than staying in the hotel that I normally do. So, yeah, it's going to be a bit of a change next year. It's going to be even busier.

1:01:39Jim:Wow. So does that.

1:01:40Squeaky:Yeah.

1:01:41Jim:Still looking forward to it.

1:01:43Squeaky:Oh, gotcha. Yeah, so am I. I really am. And then, obviously, you get to the Sunday afternoon, which is the – it's not even an anti-climax, is it, to be fair? It's not even – you know, when it's time that vehicles can start moving, obviously, we had to get the jump pack, but there's no beer this time, of course, because I'm now going to drive. get the 86 and the 88 fired up even they're ticking over and just wait our time to drive them back up the top so so Jim took the 86 back up didn't you

1:02:16Jim:I did mate yeah I was smoking photographs with the pathetic hooter the best but as I said earlier I didn't I didn't attempt to range change even though I probably should have done you just

1:02:28Squeaky:basking in the glory going up that hill

1:02:31Jim:I mean, first of all, I couldn't get it moving because the dead man was on. I think we're all jumping in the air. But, you know, the spirit of people, you know, when you're going out, they're all waving and all that, and you've got the drones up. It's just, I mean, I love all that anyway, but I love photography. And my mate Scott Braden as well, I mean, he sent me the photographs of me driving the truck the very next day. It's almost like he handpicked me out of it. So I appreciate that, Scott, if you're listening. great photographer as well, lovely fellow, and a fellow motorhomer as well. So he's got, he does, he goes all over, but yeah, that, that bit driving out, Dazzle as well.

1:03:10Jim:And he kept, Dazzle kept saying, Matt, Jim, Jim, Jim, do you think Matt let me drive the 16? I said, yeah, don't ask him. I don't want to be one of these. I said, I'll ask him for you. And he was so made up. He was so made up. And he is, Dazzle, he's a very special friend of mine. And yeah, he,

1:03:29Squeaky:so yeah, so he, he got to drive the F16 and the 88 over the weekend. Yeah. I took the 88 back up the top. And then, yeah, because it was just the three of us up there on the Sunday, bang under the trailer, get that all hooked up, get, get, get the two units on, strap them all down. Yeah. Correct one of Jim's straps. We won't mention that. Right.

1:03:50Jim:They were made of cardboard, as I mentioned earlier. Yeah, they were made of cardboard. Yeah.

1:03:56Squeaky:And, and then, yeah, then sadly it was time to head home.

1:04:01Jim:And that driving out the roundabout, the right turn of the lights.

1:04:05Squeaky:Yeah.

1:04:06Jim:Everyone's out there. And you're looking for your pictures the next day on social media. That's me, that's me.

1:04:12Squeaky:It's weird because it's not even really a particularly sad feeling leaving, is it? You're still on such a high and seeing all those people taking pictures and videos and all that and beating the horn. It's just, yeah, I think it's only once you get on the M40 and you're just like, well, it's all done for another year now, isn't it?

1:04:30Mat Ireland:that's where the come,

1:04:31Squeaky:that's when the come down sits,

1:04:32Mat Ireland:sort of sets in. Yeah.

1:04:34Jim:Because on the Maritimes go past you with the driver slums over the wheel going, I hate my life.

1:04:39Mat Ireland:Yeah.

1:04:42Squeaky:And yeah, it was a bit of a poignant drive back for me. Cause obviously last, the weekend just gone after recording this, all the trucks of Ben's were auctioned off and they've all sold. So that was my last, my last drive in the F16. You know, when I turned, when I turned her off the last time, it was just like, that's the last time I'm driving this thing. And it was...

1:05:00Jim:Did you give her a tap on the door?

1:05:02Mat Ireland:Of course I did, yeah. It was a...

1:05:05Squeaky:And do you know what, right? I, obviously, a lot of, there's a lot of interest at sale because of what they were, because they're all absolutely stunning, mint, just stock trucks. They really were. And I genuinely thought the 143, the 16, and the FH16 would all be heading to Ireland. And it's a good job I'm not in sales because I couldn't have been further from the trip. further from the truth the F88 that I took down there I think that hit just over 80 ,000 in the sale incredibly which was nearly not far off three times the amount the 143 and the 16 both made incredibly wow

1:05:45Jim:make an appearance of retro next year do you think when they buy they got it

1:05:49Squeaky:I'm not sure I'm not sure who bought the F88 to be honest a chap from Scotland bought the FH16 one of the 86 because there was two 86ers that Jim probably didn't realise because there's an early one with a metal grill as well that Ben had. I saw that on there. Yeah. That sold, I think, for£46 ,000. The little 86, the one that you drove, Jim, sold for£40 ,000 probably because you drove it, bumped the price up a bit, I expect. It's got no clots in it, Nick. That's it, yeah. But yeah, it all went and yeah, and I think it's all pretty much stayed within the UK, I believe. But incredibly, he had a little Ford cargo 813 7.5 tonner and that made I think that was close to 18 grand which I was stunned at absolutely stunned so yeah it just shows doesn't it what the market I genuinely have no idea on the market clearly because I thought that the let's say that them 90s ones would be the hot ticket and the 86 and 88 maybe not be but hey I couldn't have been fair from the truth so

1:06:50Mat Ireland:there's obviously people out there that are still

1:06:52Squeaky:really passionate about yeah yeah about the about the older school about the older ones yeah so it'll be interesting to see yeah whether again if they've gone up to Scotland like some of them have then it's a hell of a commitment to bring them down isn't it so and like SN I mean how many trucks did SNT have there that weekend half a dozen yeah

1:07:12Mat Ireland:what was it three low loads I think or two three low loads yeah

1:07:16Squeaky:I definitely see two

1:07:18Jim:in the car park yeah

1:07:19Squeaky:I mean what a commitment financially to send all of their you know and again for no gain just purely for the enjoyment of people you know they look at me

1:07:30Jim:take care of my lovely truck yeah which is yeah sometimes I do you know I'd like to I mean I could go where I like now with my motorhome and stuff like that maybe you know I'd like to maybe try something else instead of doing what I'm doing now but I'm happy enough here at PW Gates you know I am but to go to an actual proper transport haul here I'm not saying I'm thinking of myself I don't own haul here but yeah but just do maybe something different

1:07:58Squeaky:like trying to get yourself out of the sand bunker at a gym yeah I don't think

1:08:02Jim:I'm too much in it that's about as

1:08:04Squeaky:close as I can get to a golf reference because other than that I've got no idea literally no idea

1:08:13Squeaky:but yeah I mean yeah just what a weekend absolutely amazing thanks to

1:08:20Jim:Lee and his help with the family and all the volunteers

1:08:22Squeaky:yeah 100 % and obviously the show sponsors and whatnot lot because I mean as we know just doing this podcast you know it's stuff like that that makes the world go around so I mean just just as we mentioned it you know if people listening would like to try and if they can afford to contribute towards like the running of it you know buy me a coffee or Patreon everything is all greatly received or if they know companies who may like to sponsor it you know please get in touch

1:08:48Jim:I did speak to Ed Lavelle actually he runs with his brother Martin the bulk transfer I did speak to him but he was at the borrowed a Saturday night and he went just send me a link to it Jim I'll see if I can sort something out so yeah

1:09:02Squeaky:yeah yeah the scan is up the top there didn't he the same kind of

1:09:05Jim:errors they normally do yeah yeah

1:09:09Squeaky:excellent so I mean that for me I've got one more show left to do now I think this year which is Drifter Style which is Swedefest Swedefest of course yeah yeah forgot about that my joint favourite show of the year and I forgot about it

1:09:23Jim:I'm actually I'm changing my golf holidays so I'm going to Swedefest good man

1:09:28Squeaky:good man because the atmosphere at Swedefest I can't believe I forgot it it's because I was chatting with Rob the co-organiser and we were hoping to get a podcast done to chat about it but I don't think there's going to be time we'll see so we're probably going to do a bit of a debrief podcast chat with Rob so but yeah Swedefest the atmosphere is very similar but obviously there's a lot of trophies to be won so So there's a lot of cleaning and polishing, things like that. I'm actually, I'm taking a friend's FH16 along, so I've got a truck to take, which is good, rather than stick my van. So, yeah, that'd be really good.

1:10:05Squeaky:And then, yeah, Drifter Style over an island, which would be really, really good. That'd be the year done, incredibly. Wow.

1:10:12Jim:And then? Such rubbish weather all year, as someone said to me the other day. Yeah. And 60 days where it was 30 degrees.

1:10:20Squeaky:Yeah, I thought that was rubbish. It was horrible. that's just because I'm chunky and hairy and I don't like the heat too much

1:10:29Mat Ireland:chunky and hairy yeah dirty pig

1:10:35Squeaky:and yeah there's a sort of season coming towards an end isn't it guys

1:10:41Mat Ireland:well for me it stops at it's retro at Gaden that for me is the end

1:10:49Squeaky:wraps your ear up

1:10:50Mat Ireland:yeah because the weather after that starts to turn keeping the truck clean and tidy and all that it's now an impossible isn't it but but yeah so gaden for me is is is what wraps the year up fair enough mate but yeah yeah talking of wrapping it up um i think we're about done on time i think so mate um it's been a pleasure it's been nice to sort of go through a breakdown of of how the weekend works and i hope that we've inspired people that haven't been to gayden to go and see it um and like we say we've explained that not only do you get entry to see all the the trucks amongst the show there's two museums that are there as well which are absolutely amazing uh vehicle museums and the model museum upstairs as well it is just a really family orientated feel when you're there it's just absolutely amazing I love it and so I will be there again next year

1:11:46Squeaky:next year 100 % and it's also been an absolute pleasure to record again with you guys because it's it's been it's never easy because you guys work a little bit harder than what I do I've only got that quite a bit to be honest Squeaky's microphone is cut off unfortunately so he can't reply to that comment to that comment

1:12:06Jim:I've had a lot going on personal in the background as well and probate with my dad's death and stuff so it's been nice I look forward to it and I think we're starting to make it flow a little bit better now as well without too much going over the top and stuff so yeah

1:12:24Mat Ireland:It was nice to have a few comments actually at the retro show of people asking us obviously me and Jim was together most of the time and people would come and say hello and they would say oh when are you and Jim next on are you coming back on the podcast you know when yeah and it's difficult for us like you say because obviously trying to make everything align all in one go and all have that spare time you know packed up on an evening it's difficult isn't it you know oh yeah yeah so but again i spoke to you on the phone today and i said listen we really need to sort of make some more effort at getting some more podcasts recorded with matt so we will yeah we need to sort of but i i certainly appreciate

1:13:04Squeaky:the fact that it's much easier said than done because we can have the best intentions in the world. One of you gets held up either in a traffic jam or an RDC doesn't want to tip you. Actually, I know it's highly unusual for them to do that sort of thing. But all of a sudden, if you're on a nine-hour break, you don't want to spend an hour waffling nonsense to someone like me when you've got to feed yourself. And I think most of the listeners get it as well. So I just appreciate you gents finding the time to do so. My pleasure. Enjoy it, mate.

1:13:37Mat Ireland:Yeah. Enjoy it. Me too.

1:13:40Squeaky:Well, if one more thing that I should say just before, there will be, I'm telling you now, there will be one more quiz for the year before, I'm not even going to say that word, of that holiday that happens in December, but there will be, there will be one. Squeak will be working on it hard in the background. F10. There'll be, yeah, see if Jim recognises an F10 question when it's thrown in his face this time.

1:14:08Squeaky:But hopefully

1:14:09Mat Ireland:we'll get to record one before that anyway. I've already a few questions ready. Obviously ready for it. Do you want me to send you some?

1:14:20Squeaky:I've got a few in mind.

1:14:24Mat Ireland:Well, not if you're getting them from your reference books like your CB codes where there's a fight in progress. Yeah. Yeah, well, I'm getting it completely wrong, yeah. So, yeah, it's something I'm working on in between, obviously, doing everything else that we do. So it will be ready in time.
