Welcome to Morning Cup Day, when Argentina have just knocked England out of the World Cup. There are Messi shirts absolutely everywhere. It took a 90-second minute winner, but Argentina, they got the job done. Here's what happened. We'll break it all down for you.
0:37Yep, the semifinals are done. We now have our finalists confirmed. Spain will play Argentina on Sunday in New Jersey after Argentina beat England. Let's get straight into it. Welcome to Morning Cup Date, built by the Home Depot. The Home Depot is your winning assist to host the ultimate watch party with fast free delivery to get your backyard match day ready, subject to availability. Congratulations to Argentina, who put their place in the final for a second consecutive time by beating one of their greatest and longest rivals, England, here in Atlanta, with two goals in the final minutes of the game.
1:14Now, we've got to say the atmosphere here had been building all day. It was so incredibly tense. Argentina fans gathered en masse at Underground Atlanta, while England fans were belting out their new favourite anthem.
1:35On to the match itself then. It was an incredibly cagey first half, as you probably would have expected, where for the first time on record in the World Cup, neither team registered a single shot in the opening first half an hour. England went into the break on top, though, and at the beginning of the second half, they pressed home their advantage.
2:03That man, Anthony Gordon, I'll tell you what, Barcelona fans will have enjoyed that as well. He gave England the lead 10 minutes into the second period, poking home a wonderful cross from Morgan Rodgers on the right. His first World Cup goal as well. England looks set for their first World Cup final since 1966. That was followed by Jed Spence pulling off a perfect tackle as well to stop Simeone from scoring an equaliser. England fans were in dreamland. Not for long, though. And the tactics by Thomas Tuchel will be severely questioned from this point onwards. The England coach replaced goalscorer Gordon for defender Esri Conta on 72 minutes, changing England to a 5-4-1 formation.
2:42He also brought on Dan Byrne and Nico O 'Reilly. So while England dropped deeper and deeper, Argentina started to really turn the screw and the consequences were devastating.
3:04Two goals in six minutes and 24 seconds from the Argentinians won them the game. Enzo Fernandez curled in a stunning equaliser before substitute Letaro Martinez headed home the winner in the second minute of stoppage time. Both goals assisted by, yeah, you probably guessed it. That man, Lionel Messi, he now has 12 World Cup assists, which is a new record. The 99th record, I feel that he's broken at this tournament. England had just 12 % possession between going 1-0 up and Argentina's winner. Quite some stat that, isn't it? As a result, Argentina won 2-1 and a place in another World Cup final was secured.
3:43After the game, I caught up with some pretty sad England fans. We were in the driving seat and we probably should have pushed for a second. Oh, I don't know. I just feel really sad. We were good until the last 10 minutes. I believe the coach, with the changes, he knows like Argentina for the last three games, they pressured the last 10 minutes. He should play the counter-attack more than just get back and defence. And we get a lot of pressure. I'm guided on two levels. Obviously, the disappointment of losing, but the way we played after we scored is pretty disappointing. Former England striker Wayne Rooney was very much on the same page.
4:21I just think that the decisions Tom Susha made, and I think we have to be honest on this, have cost us tonight. Even Captain Harry Kane had something to say about the strategy. Once we went 1-0 up, we seemed to just try and hold on, which at this level is not enough, so just got it, got it. So, it is safe to say everybody of an English persuasion is pretty disappointed. Here's what Tuchel had to say about all of that criticism. No, I believe that's just the nature of the game. As soon as you lose, you get criticised. That's just what it is. This result means that England have lost every knockout game at a World Cup against a top-10-ranked nation since 1998.
5:00And the reaction from the English press has been pretty severe. Journalists across English football media have said it was close to sackable from Tuchel. Tactical cowardice, one called it, and another suggested that Thomas has got some answering to do. Here was Rory's cutting assessment on the night cup. Ultimately, by appointing Tuchel, a German, the FA, the people who run football in England, or run the England national team, were basically saying, we don't care about all the stuff that Southgate talked about. Legacy, culture, all that business. That's all fluff and nonsense, effectively. We are here to win now.
5:33He was paid, I saw a friend of the show, Tarek Panja, and he said that Tuchel was paid to win the World Cup final. He's not done that. After the whistle that Argentina players celebrated wildly was Giovanni Lo Celso bringing out a provocative banner that said the Malvinas are Argentine. They will march on to the World Cup final, inspired once again by Lionel Messi, who delivered emphatically on the global stage yet again. He may have not added to his eight goals from this tournament, but those two assists will be just as precious as anything else he has scored himself. We caught up with an Argentina fan after the game who was almost lost for words.
6:09It's a great win for the rival, for the last Cup of Messi. No, we are happy. I don't have words, sorry. This Sunday's World Cup final between Spain and Argentina marks the first time that the current champions of Europe and the current champions of South America have ever met in the final. Oh, and by the way, here's a stat for you. Both of those couldn't beat Kate Verde in normal time. Somebody give Vazinha the trophy. For England, though, their 60 years of hurt will continue at least another four years.
6:45In today's Drilldown brought to you by Makita, let's dive into the numbers behind the two finalists, Argentina and Spain, and see if there's any early conclusions that we can draw. First of all, let's start with Spain. Defensively, they've been almost flawless. They've conceded just one goal all tournament, the fewest of any team. They're also allowing an average of just 6.3 shots against. Again, the best record in the tournament. Basically, good luck creating any chances against Spain. They're also the hardest working side, covering an average of 70 miles over 90 minutes. That's more than any of the other semi-finalists.
7:22Now, let's compare that to Argentina. Their expected goals against is almost double Spain, suggesting they've given opponents far more opportunities. Do Argentina beat Spain on anything? I hear you ask. Well, yeah, they do. They're actually top for cross and pass accuracy. They've also scored more goals and have a higher shot conversion rate, meaning when they get their chances, they're more likely to take them. But overall, if we're judging this final purely on the numbers, Spain seem to edge it. But this final isn't being played on a spreadsheet. It is a World Cup final and history has taught us one thing, and that is that anything can happen.
8:00And as the world arrives in the United States for the biggest spectacle in sports, we're going coast to coast, host city to host city to meet the world with the Men in Blazers Match Day Live Tour. 8:37To the football, to more together courage.
8:44On today's finishing touch brought to you by Bear Paint, we have one of the most incredible full circle stories in world football. It involves Lionel Messi and Laminia Mao. Back in 2007, they featured in a charity photo shoot. Messi was just 20 years old, already one of Barcelona's brightest stars. Jamal? Well, he was just months old. One of the photos shows baby Jamal sitting in a little bathtub, smiling back at Messi. Another photo captures Messi gently holding Jamal in his arms. It wasn't planned as anything special, but has gone on to become one of the most iconic pictures in football history.
9:21Here's the photographer who never imagined what those photos would come to represent. It was difficult. To give you an idea, Messi is quite a shy guy. He was 18 or 20 years old. He came out of the locker room and suddenly found himself in another locker room with a plastic bathtub full of water and a baby inside. Now, 19 years later, the baby in those photos stands on the opposite side of the pitch from the man holding him in a World Cup final. Imagine if you told that to Messi at the time. If Jamal can lead his Spain team to victory, it won't just be another passing of the torch. It will be one of football's most ridiculous full circle moments.
10:00Maybe they can recreate it. That is it for Morning Cup Day today, built by the Home Depot.
