In short

European Nights 09/09/26 is a Champions League matchday recap (post-game) covering Arsenal vs Napoli, Liverpool vs Atletico, and PSG vs Slovan Bratislava, plus quick takes on other games and tournament storylines. Arsenal grind down Napoli 1-0: Odegaard’s long-range winner, 53% possession, 13 first-half shots, and a late push culminating with Ben White and Trossard involvement; key claim is Arsenal’s mental consistency (13 straight league wins) and “grinding down” opponents.

Notable examples

De Bruyne’s first start for Napoli; Napoli’s earlier Benitez “camouflage kit” history. Liverpool beat Atletico 2-1: Alvarez early for Atleti, then Liverpool goals via Barcola miss, a ping-pong equalizer, and McAllister’s winner; key claim is Liverpool’s midfield rebirth and McAllister’s contract case.

Notable examples

Llorente’s Anfield “pet dog” joke; Barcola’s calf injury. PSG thrash Slovan 6-1: Ferran Torres hat-trick; Luis Enrique’s treble talk; key claim is PSG’s disciplined transfer model and early-season concerns are overstated. Other guests/topics: Inter/Real Madrid (Mourinho hype), City vs Porto (Haaland brace), Ethan Mbappe at Lille, and Sabah’s debut CL story.

0:19Champions League is back in our loving arms. Arsenal grind down Napoli. Martin Odegaard is a man. And Afwoko, Liverpool, at last, the goalscorer who's done them so much, he mockingly, I crap you not, named his pet dog Anfield. PSG and Barcelona blowouts make you long for the knockout rounds already. We'll break all of this down. This is European Knights. Now a post-game rather than pre-game this season. The footballers, you know, they played the actual games. Now we'll do the hard part, sit in our chairs alongside you and, you know, talk about it all. Let's dive in. I'm joined by multilingual Maradona of journalism.

0:57It's Atlanta's own Mr. James Horncastle.

1:01James Horncastle:Hello, Rog. I am lemon pepper wet for this European night. Champions League is like being back in Magic City with you and Rory and Humph. That never happens. So let's start at the stadium. Diego Armandu, Maradona, Napoli nil, Arsenal one. And Arsenal's journey of vengeance, trying to redeem themselves for the defeat to Ibiza final boss. Paris Saint-Germain begins in one of the most passionate footballing cities in Europe. Truthfully, though, not quite as intimidating as it would have been a couple of years ago, James. No, absolutely not. Even the locals didn't all show up for this, Rog. I mean, it's the centenary year, but clearly there's some parties going on which are better than the football that Max Allegri is serving up.

1:47James Horncastle:So, yeah, not as intimidating. Still a great place to go, though, for our listeners. I recommend it. I would love, there's a few cities I would love to go more with you, James. I have a short list of horny cities. That's Horncastle. Not, you know, up for it cities. But Napoli, losers of two straight in the league. I want the Napoli of our imagination, squad-wise or tactically in terms of their commitment to buccaneering. You mentioned him, new coach, old friend, Max Allegri. He's kind of got them seeding possession, snapping forward. On occasion here, they set up early and often with KDB, Kevin De Bruyne, a 35-year-old master, getting his first start of the season.

2:28Man, James, he played out of his socks. It was like watching an Arthur Miller character play football, a man who wanted the world to say his name.

2:36James Horncastle:Yes, indeed. In a crucible that, as we've mentioned, wasn't boiling. but no he played as if he thought he was back in the Premier League he's like oh god it's Arsenal it's a big game I'm gonna step up because yeah poor KDB you know he's since he's been at Napoli he's either been injured um which look it's a great place to be injured in I'd just be down by the beach in Maricuero. Top 10 cities in the world to be injured. Eating fried fish um you know sort of the restaurant's fully booked tonight no worries sir let me bring this table for you and your wife good fella's style exactly so no he was playing out of his skin um tonight because he hasn't been playing max allegory's been sort of ignoring him um so i think uh dare i say that a week after the transfer window closed this is a come and get me plea i can still maybe do another season in the premier league i don't know if burnley get promoted we would love to see you at turf more kevin you know i it was there was an old kids game we used to play in england you may have to Google this and I can't believe I'm talking about it.

3:37It's with matches where you kind of get two at the end of the box and one down and light it. It was called Grandad's Last Direction. And that's what I thought about watching Kevin DeVruyne play so up for it today. I also thought, you know, all people can do great things. Colonel Harland Sanders did not invent Kentucky Fried Chicken. James until he was 62 as a global chain.

3:58James Horncastle:Having been in Atlanta and tasted some of the best soul food that you can imagine, And, you know, I mean, Colonel Sanders, Atalanta's given you one hell of a beating over the years. You're telling me Colonel Sanders did not invent fried chicken in the same way as the Beastie Boys did not invent hip-hop? I don't know. I just don't know. Arsenal, God bless, dominated, had 53 % possession, 13 shots in that first half. I think they're most on the road in the Champions League, but their finish was wildly uncalibrated. There's one stunning chance. It was like the matrix of football. Ebericci Eze leaping up to head across the face of goal.

4:37Mourinho, just a golden chance, headed it sharply straight at the keeper. Beautiful Bucaio over clubbed a one-on-one chance. Incapier was really wild. And Jocares, first start of the season, really a non-factor. Really, the story of that first hour was a resurrection of the elite striker rod with which to beat the arse.

4:58James Horncastle:Yeah, and I mean, look, as much as we've downplayed Napoli, this is a team that has won the league in two of the last three years. It has got a kind of serial win as a coach. So we shouldn't basically tell Arsenal that this was just a regulation win for themselves. I remember there was a time when Napoli played Arsenal at the Stadio Maradona and they beat them 2-0. and then they went to the Emirates and played in a camouflage kit and Rafa Benitez claimed he couldn't see them and they lost 2-0. They were eliminated from the group with 12 points. So, chapeau Arsenal. I love that moment of Rafa Benitez explaining away that he couldn't see his own players.

5:43Camouflage works, kids. Don't toy with it at home. Longer the game went on, though, and this, I think, is the greatest tribute to Arsenal. You just see their football grinding their opponent down, both physically but also mentally. There was a period around the 17th minute where it became almost football without suspense. Yes, it was tied, but you knew it would not be at the final whistle. 75th minute, my friend, close and personal, Ben White, and the mighty potent new Trossard, Solis, four assists in five games. Is that good? Fed Erdegaard, who from distance, with confidence and belief, and just verve, lash, mash, bashed, five feet high and rising into that net.

6:25Four goals in five this season. I'm so happy humanly for Martin Erdegaard. We all wrote him off, rumours of his demise, dot, dot, dot. 13 straight wins in the opening league stage for Arsenal. That is incredibly impressive, the consistency of it. That requires mentally as much as anything. But it was a game overall, James. I hate to say this. did make me wonder at times what the point is of this big random opening group stage we have to sit

6:53James Horncastle:through yeah i mean just uh going back over previous arsenal napoli games this is no longer kind of a novelty this is what that new format throws up um a lot big games but we see those big games um more regularly and i think that takes some of the novelty off them look it's one of the reasons why i think the stadium was was not as full as it was but those who did uh get to the maradona i mean the odegaard goal we shouldn't we shouldn't skip over that it was fantastic fizzing uh shot from outside the box um fizzing like one of those mad limonata drinks they give you in uh in the spanish quarter which is a bit of lemon bit of sparkling water and then for no reason at all bicarbonate of soda so it makes you look silly because it just froths all over you and i was quite happy to let the the odegaard goal froth all over me rog does it make your belt Shat drink.

7:45James Horncastle:Yes, it really does. Anything with bicarbonate, it comes back quickly. But it comes back with a nice lemon twist. Remember when you were a kid, you were just forcing those burps. Those were the days. To Anfield, the stadium. Not the dog. Liverpool 2, Atletico Madrid 1. A game which opened with the against type. Opening goal for Atletico. One away striker Julian Alvarez. A new signing, Christian Romero, made the first start. the season. And against the opening press, Alvarez made it look easy with a clever, clever through ball for an old, familiar foe for Liverpool fans. Five goals in three games at Anfield.

8:25How have Everton not signed this man? Marcos Llorente. A man who loves scoring at Anfield so much. A crap you not. He's named in Stog. I think it's a pug. He's named at Anfield. James, just the amount of petty disrespect. You have to respect it. You do.

8:44James Horncastle:I mean, you say Anfield the stadium, not the dog, but he does seem to take the cop for a walk every couple of years. And this is a guy that doesn't really score anywhere else. So, I mean, you asked Everton, how have you not signed this guy? I mean, Roger, have you learned nothing from deadline day? Too soon. Too soon. By the way, you told me that he has a number of dogs. Is this like his thing, Uente? He is an incredible character, right? Yes. You know, every conspiracy theory on the internet, Marcus Uente seems to believe him. And so I wonder what his other dogs are called. You know, I don't know if he feeds, he takes handfuls for a walk with chemtrails.

9:35Oh, my God.

9:37James Horncastle:You can handfill the dogs. Come here, chemtrails. I've heard the worst name for dogs. Just Google. Just Google Llorente because he is the kind of person that would actually have called one of his dogs Anfield and the other one Alex Jones Info Wars. He's a bit of a mouthful. Come here, Alex Jones Info Wars. Stay. Oh, my God. For Liverpool, behold, Bradley Barcola made Liverpool the first team in human civilisation, and I'm not being hyperbolic, To start three players, each purchase for over£100 million, $135 million, Isaac Wurtz, and now Double B, managed to miss a sitter when the score was tied and then exited.

10:24With some concern, it's got to be said, while holding his left calf. That equaliser, five minutes before halftime, ball ping-ponging around in and out of Atleti's box until you're right back. Barcelona, Loney, Ronald Araujo, just uncorked a deliciously mischievous find this goal if you've not seen it. Back heel assist to set up Dom Sobersly. After the Barcola miss sitter, another gent who seems surplus to requirements at Anfield, Alexis McAllister, slammed home to a web of defenders to give Liverpool a lead they would not relent. It is so wild to me, James, that Gakpo and Alexis McAllister for all the crap of last season and are on the slot, are now players reborn.

11:12James Horncastle:Particularly Alexis. I mean, I had the joy of watching him four or five times at the World Cup. And he was a completely different player from the one who really looked like he was running through treacle for Liverpool last season. And, you know, his goal against Atleti was everything that you want from a kind of box-crashing, all-action midfield player, which he was for Argentina. and does that mean that he merits a new contract? His press conference on the eve of the game, I thought it was actually really interesting, the reaction to it, people kind of questioning why do you think you deserve one and yet this is a guy who won the league a couple of years ago and has been part of two teams that have reached World Cup finals and I think he said all the right things.

12:04You told me you reminded me of an Argentinian Alan Iverson Yes

12:11James Horncastle:I think he couldn't believe on the back of let's say the last two months why he it seemed like he was almost being offered for a trade I'm not saying that he's been the MVP for Liverpool because he certainly wasn't last season but he's still got a lot to offer so pay the man Sign him up. You're paying everybody else, Liverpool. Even with, by the way, talking about paying people, a bench was weaker than chain restaurant coffee. Andoni Arrola, his European management record now stands at one game played, one game won, which I think is probably the most significant aspect of the day. Till last night, Porto nil.

12:54Manchester City 2. The morning before the game, all the news in football was really about how Enzo Moresca now motivating his players by blasting house music from large City-branded speakers. That's a detail I love, but he didn't just use speakers, but they're City-branded while they trade. I do believe, I've always said this, it's a life truth, nothing motivates elite footballers more than the blast of David Guetta, James. City, like the rest of the teams, will be targeting 16 points from the eight games in this opening round to get through. Here they started 18-year-old prodigy Ayubouadi. I think it was an assured, tidy full debut.

13:32I loved watching him alongside Enzo Fernandes. City had 69 % possession in that first half. Nice. Porto failed to record a single shot on target. It's going to be said City was sluggish, lacking in position, until two goals from the inevitable Erling Haaland changed out in the second half. First, a kiss of his downy bald head. Second, a caress precision roller. We've got to look at these numbers, James, because I'm going to say them, but the words almost wash over you and do not do justice. 59 goals in 59 Champions League games, yeah. Man is 26. When you hear those numbers, 59 and 59, James, it's the whole Champions League of Farmers League.

14:17James Horncastle:I mean, this is a man who loves nothing more than being on a farm, Erling Haaland, you know, buying tomahawk steaks, milk, that sort of thing. So maybe that's why he feels so at home, Rog. But to think those goals have also come when he's been at Salzburg playing on the Jesse Marsh, no? Yeah, I mean, a great footballing mind. By the way, the greatest America has ever produced, pound for pound, I will not have any Jesse Marsh disrespect on this show. These numbers, put them into context for us. Can you even put them into? They almost don't make sense. It's almost like watching Mondo Duplantis do his thing.

14:55We're just like, yeah, he's broken another world. You just become numb to it.

14:59James Horncastle:It is Mondo-like. I don't know what they feed these people in Scandi these days. It is a, I'm going to wake up and break a record today. I was with Clabo, the cross-country skier who won six gold medals at the Winter Olympics. These guys are just built differently, Roch. They're not like you and me. Sorry, you've got to finish this story. Where were you just casually with Clabo? I was at the top of the ski jump in Holman Kallen, which is, I think it's on top of a fjord overlooking Oslo, which is where the Norwegian Winter Olympians, or just like the hardest men and women on earth, train. and Klabo is I think the closest to breaking Michael Phelps' kind of Olympic record when it comes to winning golds and big Alexander Sauloff fan so you know yeah he likes an underdog story among Norwegian strikers I don't want to ask what you were doing there but I do like to think that when you're on the slopes you carry a backpack that when you fall off the slopes when chased by machine gunning attackers.

16:16It just opens up and it turns into like a Union Jack parachute.

16:21James Horncastle:Yeah, yellow ski suit like Roger Moore. Yeah, very good. He should hear about the Napoli kits they wore, the camouflage. He's got the opposite. He's like, come and shoot me, yellow. Yeah. Yeah, they did look like Bond villain outfits, actually, as I'm being pursued whilst I ski down a bobsleigh run. I'm joking, but I bet you my honest vision is close to the truth. Manchester United awaits at the weekend for City. Next up in the Champions League, the visit of Paris Saint-Germain. We'll run through a couple of the other games yesterday. Inter Milan won, Real Madrid 2. Jose Muno against one of his beloved exes.

17:05An odd game. The Italians actually dominated this. 70 % possession in the first half. of Courtois. Ultimately, this is what tells you all you need to know about another match, but Madrid's goals both came from self-inflicted mistakes. First party Liverpool fans love this. I found this so wild to watch them feast on one of their own. Curtis Jones, who dallied on the ball in a way that made every Redder knew. Both laugh and get PTSD in equal measure. It was finished by Kylian Mbappe, 71st Champions League, goal-time for fifth all-time on the list. He's 27. And despite the score, into much the stronger team.

17:4021 shots, completed 94 % of the passes, highest completion rate against Madrid in the Champions League since, I think, 2004. Jose Mourinho said post-game, the game was mad and not a madness I like. Comes after Real lost against Timo Real Betis in the league last weekend. Let me ask you, James, Jose Mourinho too, electric boogaloo at the Bernabeu boo. So this is not the Jose we all love and loathe in equal measure. He's not the Mourinho that we think about in his pomp. He's not won a trophy since that fig leaf for the Conference League with Roma 2022. Before that was 2016-17, the trophies with United.

18:22Since then, he's kind of wandered around, you know, lolloping through Turkey with Fenerbahce. Yes, the unbeaten season with Benfica, where he still can strive not to win anything. Hasn't won a league title in over a decade. 63. We know football is for young managers now. We have big brains, big tactical minds that can fit their beautiful bodies into tight, expensive, athletic sports, casual. So can you put Mourinho into perspective? Where is he now? What does the name Jose Mourinho really mean other than kind of like a fading A-lister, kind of like the Aaron Paul of football?

18:56James Horncastle:I think he keeps doing this because whenever I walk down a very expensive Italian high street where all the luxury stores are, I think I've now ticked off that, you know, in this season, Jose was dressed by this expensive Italian boutique. In that season, it's this one. He's just like a walking clothes horse now. He's in it for the clothes. I think he's in it. I think he's in it for the moment. it's Ferragamo last year I think it was Xenia I think this is just what he does I know I think Mauricio Pochettino is only in it for like 10 % off at Hugo Boss and he said the game was mad last night and I'm only joking here maybe he didn't coach the team because these days certainly since he's been back at Madrid it feels like his one job is not to coach the team is to be a hype man for Kylian Mbappé to win the Ballon d 'Or.

19:53James Horncastle:That's all he does. He's just saying Kylian is stratospheric. He's the best I've ever seen. When I was a translator for Louis van Gaal, he didn't say that, and I got to coach Ronaldo Nazario with Bobby Robson, I got to see him every day. Kylian's like that. He's unbelievable. He was on French TV last night breaking out his French. You know, Jose's not worked in France, but there he was on Canal Plus, giving it the hard sell for Kylian Mbappé to win the Ballon d 'Or. which of course is awarded by a French magazine and he's there just telling anecdotes in French about Mbappé. So he's Mbappé's hype man.

20:30James Horncastle:That's what he does these days. So quick question for you to put this into context. Which new manager will make it furthest into this competition? Jose Mourinho, Enzo Mureska and Donny Irola. Ooh, what about Cesc Fabregas?

20:49James Horncastle:That's really that's probably the right answer I mean Cesc his style of football and his style of management excites me a great deal they were in pot four, they've got a really difficult draw, Comar, against the likes PSG, Barcelona, Man United, etc but Cesc does some very special things there I'm getting more and more on the Maresca train, I must say Rog I like their signings Buadi in Porto you mentioned him I think he had a better time in Porto than you did on your post World Cup holiday he looked like he was he looked especially silky in that midfield and I think that midfield now looks like it could be it could be very good with Anderson and Enzo in there as well I think that's so I'm I'm I'm getting inclined to say City at this moment of time with Maresca.

21:46From one Mbappe to another, we've got to mention the younger brother, Ethan, who's Lille, threw away two one-goal leads, eventually lost the game to Real Betis, Troy Parrott winner, of course. And the effort mentioned Ethan Mbappe helped his team both open the scoring with a quite stunning whip cross of an assist and then departed early, dramatically, on 56 minutes after a do-you-not-know-who-I-am sneaky elbow to the face of Real Betis defender and Natan. James, Ethan is 19. Is he the Frank Stallone of Mbappes or will the name Ethan soon soar around the globe?

22:22James Horncastle:Or the Hugo Maradona of Diego. Look, from what I've been told about Ethan, like when he was at PSG with Kylian, it wasn't just because he was there as Kylian's brother, as the guy to carry his boots around for him. It's because he's a talent in his own right. And so Lille know how to pick a player, as we've seen over the last few years. They don't have any passengers in that team. And so I think we should keep following Ethan closely. If only he had a hype man like Jose Mourinho, people would hear more about him. So essentially you're telling me he's the Joe Bellingham of Mbappes. yeah and look um i i think that's what that's what should killian do killian after he wins the ballon d 'or in a few months time he should just say jose now now work with my brother there you go god bless us his height man we all need by the way we all need a height man in our life in other games psg opened up a can of whoop ass however you say that in french the summer of Fran continues.

23:31Fran Torres netted three times in a 6-1 beatdown of Jaya Torres, Slovan Bratislava. Yes, I just said that. Jaya Torres, Slovan Bratislava. We'll talk about that in a second. Barcelona blasted five past Feyenoord. Rafinha scored twice. Well, that ecstatic 19-year-old team goat, Laminia Marl, had a goal and two assists. Hansi Flick's boys scored five goals in four other games so far this season. Aston Villa ignited their campaign at Club Rouge after a familiar slow start. No goals in their first Premier League games. Remember last year? Their first goal of the season came from one John McGinn in their first European match.

Read the full transcript

24:10And he did the same here, opening the scoring, what ended up a 3-2 victory. So they're ahead of schedule. Even Nico Jackson scored his first for the Villa. They back just in time for Forrest at the weekend. And James, we have seen two-thirds of this big bloated opening round match day, which is more than enough to make knee-jerk predictions. Spoiler alert us, who will be in the semifinals, the final four at the end of this Champions League season?

24:37James Horncastle:So I think PSG, real statement, even though it was against Slovak Bratislava, should tip our hats to Yaya Toure. I think becoming the first African coach to work in the Champions League. I know the result didn't go his way, but credit to him. So PSG, Barca, don't need a striker. They've got Rodri, Arsenal, and I'll say City. You're not going for one unsuspecting, just organised, disciplined Italian outsider who'll get ramrodded in the semifinals? I think, I mean, I always talk up Inter and they've hurt me over the last few years, going out to Bodo Glimt last season. I would like to think Roma in their centenary year.

25:31James Horncastle:And maybe you could swap supporting one Friedkin club for another one, Rog, in Roma, as Roma go on to reach a Champions League semi-final. Not publicly right now, James. I'm not prepared. we'll go to Rome together and I'll, I'll, I'll convert you. I'd love, I'd love, I'd love. I did wear, uh, to my last game at Goodison, a Roma hat, you know, hashtag team freaking. We all drive Toyotas now. And that's just in the whole game. People are like, where you got an Roma hat on lad. Um, so God bless completely and utterly unconnected emotionally. Um, it is too early to tell, uh, right now. But one thing I find fascinating as we do, uh, approach all of this, that needs acknowledging.

26:18There's a, so really, for me, no Pep Guardiola in the Champions League. First time since his last sabbatical, 2012-13, but his legacy lives on. Incredibly, four former players of Pep's now coaching in this Champions League. Von Son Company, sort of trying to keep baggy B-boy clothing happen on the Bayern Munich sideline. Martin Di Michele, newly installed at RB Leipzig. Alexander Kolorov, assistant manager at Inter. And as we mentioned, the incredible Jaya Turi has taken his first manager job at Sloven Bratislava. That's just utterly, utterly remarkable. It was very, very hard for him to go up against his teammate of Pep's for five years, as well as his direct replacement of Barca B back in 2008, Luis Enrique.

27:06It's incredible, man. Pep and Jurgen Klopp not currently in club football, but Pep's soul. It lives on, James.

27:13James Horncastle:Yeah, it really does. Not only when he's been FaceTimed by Erling Haaland as he shaves his head. Pep is everywhere. The Pep paradigm is in the background. yeah I wonder when we'll see him again I wonder he will have been watching the Champions League tonight because when he was FaceTiming Haaland through that haircut he was watching football this is a man who doesn't seem to be able to switch off even when he's switching off I did think when I watched that video when he clicked off what do you think he felt was it just like it's like a sadness like Krusty the Clown when he goes off stage just like is this who I am now just a hair consultant

28:00James Horncastle:I mean if um yeah I suppose in Pep uh it would make you quite proud you know as as he was he was talking about his himself being follically challenged to be a hair consultant um again just shows how influential he is you don't need hair to be much same way that Arigio Saki said you don't have to be a horse to you'd have to be a horse to be a jockey um you don't have to have had hair to to be able to be a hair consultant. So there you go. Take it from me, you kind of do. I just, that video, I thought a lot about it, the Haaland hair video. Also like, you know, in the olden days, people used to stay on the phone for ages.

28:37Ages, just chatting away while you're doing the washing up, chat away at night. You could spend a whole night chatting to your mate on the phone. Like the Haaland pep call, I couldn't tell whether it was short just because Haaland's YouTube people just told pep, keep it short, We've got to keep people hooked. Retention games on YouTube. We've got to keep people moving. Or is Pep just not very good on the phone? You know what I mean? It's like, hey. It was really, it was like a nice version of, hey, bye. It was like, phew. I was like, Pep, not a phone guy.

29:07James Horncastle:If you've watched the documentary on Amazon about City, he seems to be a man who, when he communicates, he needs movement. I don't get the impression he's just a static talker. He needs to be moving things with his hands when he's talking. So maybe the phone just doesn't lend itself to that, Rog. Hi, bye.

29:32Okay, it's time. Luis Enrique, two-time treble winner. PSG, Captain Marquinhos openly targeted the treble ahead of the season, not afraid of talking about it, which would mean that PSG were joined by Munich, Ajax and Real Madrid as the only teams to ever win three European Cups in a row. Their title defence began with a 6-1 blowout over Slovak and Bratislava. Slovakia's finest, Fran Torres with a hat-trick. Ousmane Dembele, a brace to assist. One of the goals come from 18-year-old Drew Fernandes' pass, all coached by the great, indomitable Luis Enrique, former Barca contingent, thriving in Paris.

30:14But despite today's win, PSG, no strangers to slow starts. 2012, last time they began the season without a win in the first three league games of the season. They ended up winning that league at a counter. And in each of the last two Champions League, big, big, big boy group phrases. They finished 15th and then 11th. They really phoned it in. They had to advance through the playoff phase on the way to winning the trophy back to back. This season, domestic formers foreplayed and 0-1, two defeats, seven goals conceded. They're 13th currently, 13th in the French League. It's almost a surreal achievement.

30:51New left-back signing from Aston Villa, Lucas Digne said, we've had less of a pre-season, so it's been difficult. It's not an excuse, but it's an assessment. I love those words. Lewis and Riquet just shrugged when asked about their form. He says, football's inexplicable. That's a real quote. That's football. It's a quote, crappy sport. But he's already bet press-packed journalist PSG will win the league. God, would you just take it their money? So, James, should we be concerned at all about the early form? I mean, again, is this just PSG doing heron-tortoise stuff?

31:26James Horncastle:Yeah, the PSG handicap will give you seven points and then we'll overtake you in October. Now, I mean, this is the best-run football club in the world right now, which sounds obvious when they're back-to-back champions, but anyone who's followed PSG over the last 15 years, it shouldn't be obvious. It felt like being extravagant was in their DNA and losing was in their DNA when it came to the Champions League in quite spectacular fashion. And instead, this summer, they've sold players for more than 400 million. Bradley Barcola goes to Liverpool. I'm sure he'll have a good career there, but Mr. Sitter tonight.

32:12James Horncastle:and Gonzalo Ramos to fulfil a childhood dream of linking up with Christian Pulisic at AC Milan Lin Kangin now at Atletico Madrid Ibrahim Mbaye arriving for roster rebuild at Aston Villa you know in their place Spanish World Cup winning goalscorer just world hearts Rob Fran Torres in from Barcelona Monaco's talented winger Magnus Aklios and Belgian forward Mika Gord in from Ajax Each cost, I think, less than$60 million. So I'm fascinated. These moves, what drove them? And do they change anything we should expect stylistically and resultistically, if that's a word from PSG? So, Roger, I mean, they haven't been part of this rat race that we've seen in the transfer market where everybody's spending over$100 million on players.

33:07James Horncastle:And, you know, they've got the means to do it. and they're just so convinced in their model that they don't have to do it anymore. In fact, I think PSG were the kind of knee-jerk club once upon a time, it was like, oh, we've been embarrassed by Barcelona, let's go and pay 220 million for Neymar or Mbappe's had a good season, let's go and pay 180 million for him, Messi's available, let's go get Messi. And now they're just like, Jan Diamande, Yeah, we think what Real Madrid are paying is too much. We're not going to pay that, so we're happy. Kavar at Skellio, when they signed him, they tried to sign him this summer before they did.

33:49James Horncastle:Napoli asked for a lot of money. They were like, we're not going to pay that. Came back in January, got it for more or less half the price. Zion Suzuki this summer, they were like, yeah, we like him, but we're not going to pay that for him. And he went to Villa. So there's like a discipline about PSG, which was not a characteristic of theirs in the first, what, 10 years under the Qataris. And it's just made them a formidable operation. I mean, you mentioned Agliouche. He was magnificent tonight. One of Ferran Torres' goals. Two new signings coming in. Lovely mazy dribble. Then a ball to Ferran Torres on the edge of the box.

34:34James Horncastle:Fantastic finish. it just looks like they're very sure about themselves. And at the weekend, OK, they lost to Monaco, but they did something that's actually really difficult to do in football, which is, by the way, we've announced all of these contract renewals at the same time. We've got everyone to sign on the dotted line simultaneously. That never happens. We were talking about Liverpool earlier with Alexis McAllister and Cody Gakpo. I mean, Liverpool would love to have had... Do you remember that summer when they had the second half of the season where they had Trent, Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk's contracts are up.

35:08James Horncastle:And it was dragging on and on and on. PSG, that sort of drama just doesn't happen. It only doesn't happen at PSG and any team owned by Maranakis. Very similar success on the field. Yeah, but I mean, you get the field to sign. Quick question. What one team is best equipped to beat PSG this season and what? Ooh, I still think Bayern. I didn't name them in my four teams to be in the semifinals because I forgot them. But I think Bayern have the tools to be able to take on PSG at their own game. And I think what Bayern have is continuity. Continuity in the coach. They've only made a couple of signings this summer.

36:00James Horncastle:Nathaniel Brown and Saibari who was very good for Morocco but they get better every year so I still think Bayern are probably the best place to challenge them I actually think Arsenal man I don't know man I mean I know last season they had a 100 % record in the league phase and beaten in regulation the entire tournament conceded just seven times total and they still got beat when it came to the Mano Mano all I'll say is I just root for them this campaign more than I can say.

36:35From reigning champion PSG, let's quickly look at a heartwarming story from what we expect to be the other end of the table. A story that I know delights you. It's first time as Saba. Formed 2017, just nine years ago, an Azerbaijani club based in a tiny municipality called Masazir, which literally means a place of sand. I mean, God bless. does what it says on the tin. 30 miles north of Baku, population 19 ,000. Their manager, Valdas D 'Ambrouskas, became a meme last month when they qualified for the Champions League. Why, James? He was on the Lithuanian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

37:15Tell us the story. By the way, in Lithuania, I think that game's probably called Come On, Ask Questions, slightly dodgily done, and maybe win some monies because they're very little. Place of sand.

37:26James Horncastle:Dan Brouskos, he goes on, who wants a millionaire, and he doesn't really get very far. He only wins about$1 ,000, which... Goes a long way in the place of sand. Absolutely. That's probably two questions in. I'm now thinking, did he phone a friend on the first question? Did he gas the audience? He used up all his lifelines, but then... And then for the question, he just clapped and walked off, took himself out of the game. I know that. He's a complete afterthought in the history of Lithuanian who wants to be a millionaire. Well, you don't know if it is what it's called there, maybe called who wants to be a thousand dollar heir there.

38:12That's a lot of money, man, in Azerbaijan, I'm sure.

38:16James Horncastle:And look, Dan Barowskis is a winner, regardless of whether he won that contest or not, because he used that money to come to the UK and do his coaching badges. And that's the magic. Of all the places to do your coaching badges, you come to the UK, you do it, and your first league-faced Champions League game is at the Theatre of the Dreams against Michael Carrick's Man United. It's, yeah, it does feel like we're in a simulation sometimes. These things don't happen, shouldn't happen, but do happen. I find it really amazing. I mean, these are the stories I actually loved. This team, Sabah, didn't exist a decade ago.

38:58Squads worth$21.5 million total. Stadium fits 9 ,000, which I think is about half the population of Masazir, the place of sand, to be honest. It's pretty big. They're ending up borrowing a larger stadium in Baku for these games. The Owls, they've navigated four rounds of Champions League qualifying to get here. next eight guaranteed games include for them Barcelona, Arsenal, Napoli and Borussia Dortmund which is for them probably in ecstasy but for him no more pressure than the bright lights if he wants to be a millionaire right James?

39:38James Horncastle:No, no, he's suffered that humiliation of going home with just a thousand dollars if it was that. I still think someone write in and tell us, is$1 ,000 like a big prize on it? Maybe it's more than it sounds in As of John. Maybe the opening round first question, you just get given a potato. Yes. Maybe that's the prize scheme there. You get a potato, you get some herring, you get some vodka. By the way, bite your arm. Bite your arm. I've got to work your way up. The full question you get, an owl. And that's when he knew it was destiny, when he got the Sabah job. He was just like, I'm going to the place of Sabah.

40:29Big question everyone's asking you in football. James Horncastle, what would you do when you won$1 ,000 from Azerbaijani game of will of whatever it's called, who wants to be a$1 ,000? What would he do with$1 ,000? He made his dream come true. who he'd made something out of nothing, what would you do?

40:47James Horncastle:I'd use it for my campaign to become the next mayor of Atlanta. It would be seen as my donation, Rog. I think a lot of politics think you've suspended the campaign, but this is your statement. It's still on, right? Yeah. I mean, would it be controversial? No, because I'd actually made that money myself. I wouldn't be taking it. Self-made? Yeah, self-made. I'm going on various game shows in various Eastern Bloc countries in order to fund my ambition to become the mayor of Atlanta. Let's make it happen. Fermenting at the mouth saying, James Horncastle is not the privy to packs and super packs. I'm here to serve you, Atlanta.

41:29Taking money from Eastern Europe. By the way, I do think, as a Vigiani, who wants to be a millionaire, it's based on that Norwegian football club burn where they reward their star player with four trays of eggs for the Man of the Ratchi Awards. That's its influence. and I'd just love it. Very quickly, before we wrap, I don't know what I'd do if someone gave me$1 ,000 just like that. What my dream would be for that. I think I'd probably either give it to charity or get a flight to Turkey and, you know, just get a little... I can't hit the ball. Why, Roger? I just don't want to talk about it. Very quick, before we wrap, not a Champions League question, but one from our mailbag written by Lou Whale of Nashville, Tennessee.

42:13I almost did my Nashville accent. It's not very good, so I just saved the world. Lou writes the following. The real million-dollar question, I like what you did there, is what's happening with Christian Pulisic. Oh, God, that brought the mood down. AC Milan, they're not in the Champions League this year. They're in the Europa League under Ruben Amorim. Remember him, old friend? And he's left Pulisic on the bench in entirety of the first three games. Yes, he was injured July 7th in the World Clubs at the Balogun game against Belgium in the World Cup. I think it was a micro fracture. Just explain what is going on at AC Milan.

42:49Is Pulisic out of favour for Amorim? I've got to say, there's been very little outcry from the Milan fan base that he's not playing. And the fact he didn't make a move elsewhere over the summer means what, James?

43:01James Horncastle:I don't think he could have made a move in the summer, given that he had this micro fracture. Amorim was texting him whilst he was away at the World Cup. I think Pulisic appreciated that. But yeah, he missed a lot of pre-season. He didn't play any friendly games. And Amaroum is one of those coaches that kind of needs to see you do stuff in a game. Otherwise, you have to train at mad intensity for him to get you into the team. And I think there's been some surprise with Christian that the first game of the season, he was already back in the squad. And he then didn't come on. So it's kind of why name him in the squad if you don't have an intention to use him.

43:49James Horncastle:And then against Juventus at the weekend, Amorim played Adrian Rabiot as a right-sided number 10. And Christian didn't come on. So I think once he gets minutes and once he actually plays, Amorim will be like, oh, yeah, I've got Christian Pulisic back. But until he does that, it feels like Christian is just kind of sat on the bench, twiddling his thumbs. We'll see if that changes in the Europa League. What's stopping him? Because he has said he's down the depth chart right now. Yeah, and if you look, Milan have, they're playing Adrian Rabiot there, where he's kind of out of position. They've got Amari Hutchinson, who they signed from Nottingham Forest, who can play there.

44:42James Horncastle:And also the revelation of this season so far at Milan is their teenage winger, Alpha Megasisse, as he's been called, who will probably be in the Italy squad for the Nations League. So there's a lot of competition for places at Milan. And I think he has to show in training to Amirim that he is ready to play. And I think Amram at the moment, he's obviously had pre-season with some other players and feels he can trust them more. But I think if you're Christian, you look at Adrian Rabiot and you kind of say, well, Rabiot was at the World Cup longer than I was. So I need minutes just as much as he does.

45:30James Horncastle:It's just that when Rabiot came on against Torino, know he changed the game so it's a tough spot oh come on cavan sullivan um that's all the feast of football that we've got to talk about long-time listeners that means one thing we have to feast before we leave to celebrate lewis and rick's new contract extension at psg if we were going to take him out to celebrate oh james how would we take him in paris oh roger i used to go and have Thanksgiving dinners in Paris. Some friends of mine, Americans who work for the UN, they moved from Rome to Paris and they lived on Ile de Saint-Louis, which is a beautiful place to visit in Paris.

46:11James Horncastle:And there was a very old ice cream shop there called the Betillion. And you would go for a petit glace, a little ice cream of, you know, whatever, jandouille, hazelnuts, just magnificent. And they would also do those big trays, like kind of 80s vienetta. Don't know how you would describe this to an American audience, what a vienetta was, just like a log of ice cream. You made it sound so appetising, baby. I don't think I need to come around anymore. But, Rog, this is done in an exquisite and elegant Parisian way. They don't use the word log. No, they have log. but yeah it's it's a wonderful place to go have an ice cream and a walk around in paris so can we get you can we get your flavor of choice baby uh always hazelnut for me are you really that's controversial that's really really controversial if i'm going for a gelato anyway i will usually have pistachio pistachio stracciatella uh and some kind of hazelnut or one of those boozy Zabaione, something that has a bit of Marsala or rum in it.

47:22I'm still working on the Van Leeuwen's Honey sponsorship, which has been a failed campaign for the past four years. I do like this place. I'm looking at it on Google. Their slogan is In Our House, ice cream is a family affair. Reddit reviewers say one of the best things at my wedding was the Tower of Sorbets from Batillon. I don't think that marriage lasted. And when the height lasts over 60 years, it's a good sign. That is so bloody true. That is also true for Colonel Sanders and Kevin De Bruyne. A simple, classy, classic, perfect Luis Enrique dessert. James, it's been a joy to speak with you.

47:57There's no one else I'd rather revel in this goblet of Champions League football with. Thank you, beautiful.

48:04James Horncastle:And thank you, Rog. We'll be back after the international break when our beloved Champions League returns October 14th. Until then, as they say in Paris, bon courage, courage, and vote for James Horncastle Atlanta. Pulls open. Vote early, vote often.
