Guests/backgrounds

No specific guest interviews in the transcript. Mentions include producer Kippo/Charlie Kip (prediction partner) and “Sam Mewis” (Night Cup host/predictor). Host “Rory and Rog” are referenced as returning for Night Cup.

Key claims

Canada reached the last 16 for the first time by beating South Africa 1-0 via Stefan Eustachio’s 92nd-minute goal; Canada’s prior record was 6 played, 6 lost. Japan can end knockout “mental block,” having beaten Spain/Germany in 2010s group stages and recently England/Brazil; Brazil led by Carlo Ancelotti. Netherlands vs Morocco is “harsh reward” for Netherlands; Morocco unbeaten in group and Saibari scored in all three.

Notable examples

Eustachio’s emotional post-match about family; South Africa boos for passing/goalkeeper; Japan’s 3-2 friendly comeback vs Brazil (Ueda winner); ranch craze with Weston McKenney; Argentina fan chanting “Juan Manuel Botero” to reunite with a found wallet.

Now we start with our first knockout match and more history for Canada.

3:00Jesse Marsh's side are through to the last 16 for the first time in their history after beating South Africa 1-0 with a last minute winner. Fans in Vancouver were in raptures. Fans in LA were in pandemonium.

3:19All those fans were made to wait for it, though. South Africa's game plan involving passing it around their defence and their goalkeeper drew a lot of boos from the home crowd. South Africa, despite being the underdogs, did keep pace with Canada, stopping a host of their chances as well. But to be honest, in normal time, the most entertaining moment was when a woman in the crowd was filmed dropping her phone in slow motion whilst jumping up for the wave. So it looked like it was destined for extra time. That was until the 92nd minute when Stefan Eustachio hammered the ball into the back of the net from the edge of the box.

3:52And the Canadian hero was mobbed by his teammates. His post-match interview was pretty emotional. He had tears in his eyes as he remembered his parents after they passed away a few years ago. Yeah, everything I do is for my family, for my parents, for my girlfriend, for my daughter, for my brother, for my friends back home, for all of them. Candice says thank you, Stefan. I appreciate it. After, Jesse Marsh gathered his players and staff in a huge huddle and delivered a pretty passionate speech. It's the hard work from these guys, the character of them. They're Canadian heroes. That's what I told them at the end.

4:26They're now Canadian heroes. I'm so happy for them. It ended in heartbreak for South Africa, but they can take pride in their best ever World Cup finish. It is worth saying, though, that it shouldn't be played down just how impressive Canada's performances are at this tournament. Before this, their record was played six, lost six. But they immediately picked up a historic point with a draw against Bosnia. And then they thrashed Qatar 6-0 as well. A defeat to Switzerland denied them their chance to play their last 32 game in Canada. but the fans travelled in huge numbers to cheer them on in LA and it felt a little bit like a home game.

5:04What a moment though for Canada. That's got to be worth a buzzer, hasn't it? World Cup! No doubt Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow must have loved it. Canada's first ever knockout goal and their first ever knockout win. How about that? Next up for them will be a tricky test in the shape of either the Netherlands or Morocco. Here we go then. Yesterday we had South Africa against Canada as a bit of a knockout appetiser. But think of today as the main course. Three games and each of them are absolutely mouth-watering. Brazil and Japan meet in Houston at 1pm Eastern. The Brazilians, led by Carlo Ancelotti, won their group and just listened to the noise their fans made when the team arrived at their hotel in Texas.

5:57It seems wherever this Brazil team goes. Japan are also really well supported here in North America. And to be honest, any excuse to play this on the buzzer? I am very excited as well. Japan finished second in their group just behind the Netherlands, picking up two draws and a win from their group stage matches. But we're predicting that they are going to give Brazil a very serious game today. And that is the focus of the drill down.

6:27Today's drill down brought to you by Makita is all about how Japan can go about making history by winning their first ever knockout match. This is the fourth time that they've made it out of the groups. Can this be the time that they go one step further? Beating the big nations is becoming more commonplace for them. At the last World Cup, they beat both Spain and Germany in the group stages. And then in recent months, they've picked up big wins against England and Brazil.

7:01That was the sound of Japanese TV as the Samurai Blue recovered from 2-0 down at half-time against Brazil in a friendly to win 3-2 in Tokyo. Ayase Ueda scored that winning goal and the Feyenoord striker will be key once again. But it is worth saying they have five different goal scorers so far this tournament proving that they're not just relying on one player like a lot of other teams. I mentioned no names. However, picking up results in group stage fixtures and friendlies is one thing, but this run of knockout defeats is a mental block that they will need to overcome if they're to live up to expectations of being dark horses.

7:37In injury news, both sides have big attacking names on the sidelines. Brazil will be without Rafinha once again, whilst Japan's Takafuza Kubo is ruled out with a knee injury. And as the world arrives in the United States for the biggest spectacle in sports, We're going coast to coast, host city to host city to meet the world with the Men in Blazers Match Day Live Tour. These are free college game day style live events taking place just before kickoff at some of the biggest games of the summer where we'll be taking the stage with celebrity guests in front of thousands of fans. It's going to be amazing.

8:13Come and be with us in person or from afar on YouTube and let's celebrate this summer the way it's meant to be celebrated. Just head to the events tab on menandblazers.com for all the details. To the football, to more together, courage.

8:30Then at 4.30 Eastern, we've got an intriguing matchup in Boston as full-time champions Germany play Paraguay. Now, Germany won Group E thanks to wins over Curacao and Ivory Coast, but did lose their final group game to Ecuador. Paraguay finished third in their group, but have grown into the tournament, keeping two consecutive clean sheets after their 4-1 hammering by the USA during match one. Now, I'm just hoping the Germany fans here are still enjoying the American cuisine. What do you think you'll take away from your visit here in the United States back to Germany? Ranch. I love ranch. I taste it here and it's delicious.

9:08And I take two bottles with foam. Him and USMNT midfielder Weston McKenney both. Weston has spoken out about the World Cup ranch craze saying, I saw it coming. I was the trendsetter. He famously loves ranch so much that he's even said he puts it on pizza. Is that not a bit rogue? That didn't go down too well with his Italian teammate at Juventus, Giorgio Chiellini. If you put the sauce on the pizza, what is he doing? I'm scared about American dressing. I don't think I've had ranch. Is that something that I need to be tasting? Is that what I need to be doing? Anyway, as for the match, Germany will likely play Antonio Rudiger in defence due to a serious ankle injury for Nico Schlotterbeck.

9:50And Panama will Malcolm Miguel Almiron back, who was suspended for one game after picking up a red card against Turkey. However, one big miss for the Paraguayans will be Diogo Gomez, who is suspended for receiving two yellow cards in the group stages. Germany's left back, Nathaniel Brown, is fit and expected to play, though that is excellent news for their manager Julian Nagelsmann. Finally, at 9pm Eastern in Monterey, Mexico, we have another belter of a last 32 tie, as it's the Netherlands against Morocco. The Moroccans are one of nine African nations to make it out of the group, something that Algeria's Riyad Mahrez marvelled in yesterday evening.

10:28How many African teams have gone through? Tunisia's the only one, so 10 made it, 9. 9 of three to knockouts. That's amazing. That shows the quality of African football. What an incredible achievement, and Morocco are undoubtedly one of Africa's brightest stars. They're unbeaten in their three group stage matches so far and only missed out on top spot in Group C on goal difference. Therefore, this match-up feels like a harsh reward for the Dutch for winning their group. They scored 10 goals so far. They've been so exciting to watch, but we'll know that they've got to be at their absolute best to progress any further.

11:01Morocco's new danger man is Ismail Saibari, the attacking midfielder who has scored in all three games so far. Ismail is set to join Bayern Munich later this summer, by the way, but currently he plays his football in the Netherlands for PSV. So those Dutch players are going to know a lot about him. Expect Morocco to have more of the ball, but Netherlands will likely look to hit on the counter. The winner will face Canada in the round of 16, like we said earlier. After today's multi-match day of knockout action, Rog and Rory are going to be back live from Atlanta to break down the madness on another episode of Night Cup.

11:37And don't forget, we're here every morning as well. But now it is prediction time. And yesterday I took on Sam Mewis from the night cup, although she does want to be on morning cup day. I must say that. Sam predicted a Canada win in yesterday's game while I went for a thrilling 3-3 draw. I didn't actually ever say 3-3. I just said a nil-nil draw, guys. Anyway, once again, the night cup were victorious, which means it is now 8-4 to the night cup. Today I took on producer Kippo. and he, I told him he's got to go easy on us. I've come and I've grabbed Charlie Kip, the one and only Charlie Kip, producer extraordinaire.

12:16We're going to do predictions. Let's start with Brazil against Japan. I'm going to go Brazil 2-1 win. Aren't I supposed to go first? What's going on here? No, I'm mixing it up because I keep losing. So I think I need the first, the first go. Well, let's keep the streak going. I, it's a strong shout, but I think Brazil do not look like the Brazil I grew up watching. I think this is a different Brazil. I think this is a hamstrung Brazil. And I love what I've seen from Samurai Blue. We are going Japan, 1-0. They're going to get it done. Shock the world. Book it. It's really difficult because this is such a good matchup, Charlie.

12:52Oh, it's exceptional. It is so good. And you're right. Brazil aren't what we've seen, but they've also got some star quality players in there. I love Japan, though, so I feel sad giving that prediction. And as I said, I know you're particularly fond of them. and it's going to be interesting to see what happens regardless. And it definitely does not feel like it, and no disrespect to the game we've seen today. It ended up being very compelling. But it's funny, you see Canada and South Africa, and then you turn around and get matchups like this one and the one we're about to talk about. Well, let's talk about it.

13:16Okay, so we have got, coming up, Netherlands against Morocco. That is tasty. I'm going to go for a 2-1 Netherlands win. 2-1 Morocco. Let's just keep, let's zig when the world zags. I think, look, Morocco is top 10 in the FIFA rankings. They're a bona fide, legitimate team. You don't need me to remind you about the 2022 World Cup semis. Yeah, but the Netherlands have got Brian Brobby, so. Two teams who have never won the World Cup. I think ultimately it's there to play for everybody. And what, nine out of 10 African Federation teams have made it out of the group. I think it is a continent. It's an area of world football.

13:52Shout out Roy Smith with Diaspora. I think real things are possible there. Charlie, it's been a pleasure. It's a delight to you, Betty. Thank you. You're going to need it.

14:05On today's Finishing Touch, brought to you by Bear Paint, we've got to tell you about one of the best fan moments of the tournament so far. This happened in the stands after Argentina's 3-1 win against Jordan in Kansas City on Saturday night. We've all been there, haven't we? When you found a wallet or a phone on the floor, but how do you track it down to the person it belongs to? Well, you could shout like a lunatic or just hand it in to Lost and Found. But where's the fun in that? One Argentinian fan had that exact dilemma. He'd found a wallet belonging to somebody called Juan Manuel Botero.

14:37So rather than do any of the above, the fan decided to round up his pals and start chanting the bloke's surname.

14:50That chant didn't quite work though. so these Argentinian fans decided to change it up a little bit so they included his first name as well.

15:04Then eventually, after about 40 seconds of chanting his name, Juan Manuel heard his name and was reunited with his wallet, much to the delight of the concourse.

15:2310 out of 10, no notes. That is it for Morning Cup Date today, built by The Home Depot.
