2:55Hello and welcome to Morning Cup Date, built by the Home Depot. And yes, my producer really did pay$25 to have my name written out on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. I want that back, by the way. Absolutely no chance. Their loss. The Home Depot is your winning assist to host the ultimate watch party with fast free delivery to get your backyard match day ready, subject to availability. Before we preview day 12, we have got to talk about yesterday. One place to start, and that is with Cape Verde. The story of this tournament so far. They took on Uruguay in Group H in Miami, and somehow it was the debutantes that took an early lead.
3:32Cape Verde's Kevin Peener fired in a long-range free kick, which went through the middle of the wall in the 21st minute. Absolute scenes. As the goal went in, a BBC journalist was live interviewing a Cape Verde fan and it is pretty priceless. What's your appraisal of the way the Cape Verdean team has been playing so far? My personal thing so far, Cape Verde has been playing great. It's been matching Uruguay's pressure.
4:02We've got to stick that on the buzzer today. surely buzzer.
4:10An incredible moment for Cape Verde, their first ever goal at a World Cup. Fact of the day, by the way, they're the first team on record to score their first World Cup goal from a direct free kick. Not half bad. Uruguay then hit back with two goals just before halftime and you might have thought that that would be the end of the dream. But there was another one of these. That's a goal! That's a goal! Cape Verde did not give up and they equalised on the hour mark. It was a bit of a gift but Ilu Vareja did well to produce a deft touch to take the ball past the stranded keeper and into the back of the net to make it two all.
4:45This is how they celebrated on the islands.
4:56They were partying hard and why not? hey, they had already produced one of the biggest shocks of all time as they drew with Spain in their opener. Now they held two-time winners Uruguay, and qualification is in their hands. Beat Saudi Arabia, and they will be in the last 32. Whatever happens, their campaign will go down in history. And also, they're the first debutants to go unbeaten across their first two World Cup games since Senegal in 2002. There we go. There's another stat for you, giving you them all in this one. In the other group H clash, it was Spain against Saudi Arabia, which took place in Atlanta.
5:31The Spanish struggled to break down Cape Verde, but they had no problems against the Saudis. Much of that was down to the reintroduction of Lamin Yamal after his hamstring injury. The 18-year-old started for Luis de la Fuente's side and he opened the scoring after 10 minutes, which inspired a comfortable 4-0 win. So comfortable, in fact, that Yamal was subbed at half-time with Spain three goals to the good. I'm wondering, will these Saudi Arabian fans have regretted singing this a few days ago?
6:08Yamal did his talking on the pitch and then wrote, I'm here on social media once the game was over. Check mate. In the second match, Belgium took on Iran in Los Angeles and it is safe to say that this tournament is not going to plan for them. They drew 0-0 and were significantly hindered by the fact that Nathan Ngoi were sent off for pulling down Iran's Mehdi Tarimi when he was through on goal. Iran have to thank their goalkeeper Ali Rezaar Beyranvand, who produced seven saves, including a couple of sensational stops to deny Belgium a goal. Ali Rezaar's journey into football is ridiculously remarkable.
6:42He ran away from home and slept rough on the streets of Tehran in order to chase his dream of playing the sport. The final match of the day was New Zealand against Egypt, with both countries looking for their first ever World Cup victories. The All Whites took a first half lead. Tim Payne with the assist. His Insta followers will be happy with that. But Egypt hit back after the break with three second half goals. Excellent scenes in the Egypt locker room, as I'm sure you can imagine.
7:14You can't imagine the relief after waiting 92 years for a World Cup win. Mo Salah was involved in two of Egypt's goals, scoring one and assisting another. He said after the game, what happened today is history for us as Egyptians. What would be even more historic, though, would be qualifying for the knockout rounds. And given they're now top of Group G with one match remaining, their chances are very high. Let's look ahead to Monday's matches at the World Cup then. Firstly, in Dallas, history is ready to be made as Argentina take on Austria at 1pm Eastern. Both teams need a win to advance to the knockouts, but let's be honest, all eyes are on whether Lionel Messi can become the World Cup's outright all-time scorer.
7:58And whether he can be stopped by Ralf Ragnik's Austria is the subject of today's drilldown.
8:08Today's drilldown brought to you by Makita is all about how this Austrian side try to stop the Argentinian fans from singing this.
8:20Even at 38 years of age, Lionel Messi is still giving some of the world's most experienced coaches a real headache. His hat-trick against Algeria was evidence of what he can do when he gets given any space and time within shooting distance. This Argentina team is set up to get the best of Messi, even if his ability to put in the miles is slightly beyond him. Players like Rodrigo de Paul and Enzo Fernandes put in the dirty work so that Messi can preserve his energy for the moments that matter. Austria coach Ralf Ragnik's entire philosophy is built around Gagin pressing. The moment his team loses possession, players immediately and aggressively swarm to win it back, rather than retreating into shape.
9:02Ragnik wrote the book on the tactic, Jürgen Klopp was very much his disciple. Niklas Weywald and Jawa Schlager will be tasked with closing the central areas and crowding out Messi. They will be key to Austria getting a result here. But as we know, just one little lapse is likely to have devastating consequences. Let's go! Let's go! A word from our friends at 14.40. The 2022 World Cup final drew 1.5 billion viewers. It's 11 times this year's Super Bowl. To understand how football became the world's game and what drove it, Listen to 1440 Explores with Financial Times journalist Simon Kuiper, who will give you the inside scoop into the depths of the tournament.

11:01At 5pm Eastern, attention turns to Group Iron. First of all, France take on Iraq in Philadelphia. Didier Deschamps' team were poor in the first half against Senegal, but they recovered well to win 3-1 against a tough opponent. Then in New Jersey at 8 Eastern, it's potentially the most interesting match of the day as Norway take on Senegal. The Norwegian fans will, of course, be showing the good people of Times Square their row.
11:34Oh, they've got to be up there as the best fans at the World Cup. And that has got to be the best fan gimmick at the tournament so far, right? After 28 years in the World Cup wilderness, the Norwegians are having the time of their lives in the USA. They won their opening game 4-1 against Iraq with Erling Haaland scoring a brace on his World Cup debut. This will be a much tougher match, though, against a Senegal side that impressed for large chunks of the game against France. Ismail Assar missed a glorious chance in the first half and they were punished by Kylian Mbappe's ruthless finishing. Then at 11pm Eastern in San Fran it is back to Group J as Jordan take on Algeria.
12:10Both sides tasted defeat in their opening match and both will know that a win here is likely essential if they want to make it through to the final 32. Right, after Erling Haaland and Norway take on Senegal you've got to tune in to Men in Blazers YouTube to watch Rod, Rory Smith and James Horncastle break it all down. It is time for our prediction challenge, night cup against morning cup date. This is it. This is the big tournament within the tournament. Yesterday, I took on Rory Smith. We both predicted a win for Spain against Saudi Arabia, but we differed on Belgium against Iran. Rory went for Iran while I went for a Belgium victory.
12:50And in the end, that game ended in a draw, meaning today's prediction challenge also ends in a draw which means it is still 4-3 to the night cup team but everyone we've still got a very long way to go today i took on rog bennett rog some big predictions to come are you feeling ready i only want to talk about cape verd and cape verd only as a lifelong cape verd fan well unfortunately unfortunately we're not going to talk about cape verd as amazing as they They are, yeah. Throw that to the side. First one, Norway against Senegal. This could be spicy. Ecstatic game. So excited for it. Do you want me to tell you what the score will be?
13:30Do you want me to ruin it for you? It's going to be so close. The goals are going to fly. It's going to be 3-2, unfortunately, to Norway because I'm rooting for Senegal like a madman. Okay, well, I'm going to go 2-2. Who's going to score? Oh, Harland. We'll get on the score sheet. Probably twice. Next one. Okay. Okay, we have got Argentina against Austria. Two of my favourite A teams. Not bad. Score again. I think it will be 4-1 to Argentina. I think it'll be another Lionel Messi hat-trick. And you'll be just so bored of them at this point. No, never. Never. Never bored. Never bored. I just think they have such a renewed mission and I think it's beautiful.
14:12I'm going to go 3-0 Argentina. Okay, how are you doing in this? Who's winning? You're winning. We. It's we. There's no I in team. Yeah, night cover winning by one point, but we're coming. We're coming for you.
14:29Today's Finishing Touch brought to you by Bear Painters, all about the migration of the Tartan army from Boston to Miami. After two games in Massachusetts, the Scotland fans created a special bond with the people of Boston. They also had a special bond with Boston statues, shoes, with dozens being dressed with traffic cones. However, police in Miami aren't quite finding it as funny.
14:58I'm not going to lie, I'd brick it if that was me getting the siren from the cops like that. The cop may not be enjoying the Tartan army antics, but Miami is definitely getting into the spirit. The Miami Marlins have offered free beers to the first 250 Scotland fans that attend their game tonight. Vibes were also high in the air as Scotland fans flew down the East Coast.
15:31And the bars are already getting full of Scotland fans who we can imagine mixing very well with a huge amount of Brazilians who will be at the match. As for Boston, well, their next visitors are the English who play Ghana. This one Scotland fan explained to local Boston radio why he thinks the atmosphere won't quite be the same with the English in town. They won't be as polite and they won't be as fun. And they'll be a lot more arrogant and a bit more entitled. But that's the English. Fair play, I think he's right. Anyway, with Scotland drinking Boston dry, maybe they picked a good time to switch up the city.
