In short
Day 20 of the 2026 World Cup, focusing on three matches: Mexico’s 2-0 knockout win over Ecuador (ending a 1986 curse), France’s 3-0 rout of Sweden with Kylian Mbappé scoring, and Norway’s 2-1 win over Ivory Coast featuring Erling Haaland.
Guest backgrounds
Keegan-Michael Key joins as a comedy guest. Regular hosts are Rory Smith and Humphrey (Humphrey/“Humph”); Matt Chris Voss appears in chat. The episode is framed as “Men in Blazers” with football analysis and comedic bits.
Key claims
- Mexico reached the round of 16 for the first time since 1986 and finally won a knockout game; they call the next match the “Quinto Partido,” possibly vs England at the Azteca.
- France look like an “apex predator” and are not yet truly tested; Sweden’s plan nearly worked but Mbappé’s late burst decided it.
- Haaland is portrayed as a “demigod” and Norway’s win over Ivory Coast hinged on his impact and overall team control.
Notable examples
- Mexico vs Ecuador: Gilberto “Quinonez” (Quinonez) scores early; Raul Jiménez adds a second after Canones’ setup; Ecuador’s late collapse includes a red card incident involving “Incapier.”
- France vs Sweden: Mbappé’s goal after Michael Olise/Barcola/Dembélé buildup; Olise hits the woodwork with a capoeira-style sideways kick; France’s dominance includes 14 shots and 72% possession.
- Norway vs Ivory Coast: Ahmed Nusa is highlighted for a powerful, accurate goal for Ivory Coast; Haaland’s “three touches” early are contrasted with his later decisive influence.

0:15Rog:Day 20 of the 2026 World Cup. Haaland Mbappe. Canones? Same as it ever was. World Cup of big dogs. Woof, woof. Every day I wake up and I wrongly. believed there's no way the World Cup could get any better. But right now, just heard, across Los Angeles, fireworks are getting off because Mexico invented a new round of games so that they could finally win a knockout game. Live the dream. Mexico have broken the curse. Who do? Asterisk. Yeah. It's coming home. And by that, they mean the round of 16. It's coming to casa. It's coming to... Today, in all seriousness, Mexican history, let's be positive, Mexican joy, Mexican wonder, the Quinto Partido.
1:00What do you think? They will have a Quinto Partido and it might be against England. Yeah. Every possibility or Dr. Conger.
1:08Rog:Wiped the smile off their faces, didn't it? I love this. Mexico, you won a knockout game for the first time since 1986. Your curse is dead. France plays champagne football, Ratatouille football, Cocklevan football and absolutely Muller, the Swedes. What a worse day than even Freddie LA7. Not going to go there, Roy. Don't worry. Not immediately, Rog. Let's not launch straight into it. Let's say something for that 40-minute lull. Psyops. Every coast got Haalanded. Oh, my God. I think Big Earl had eight passes, 27 touches total, but one of them was a majestic mishit. They gave Norway the first knockout win ever.
1:48Rog:And look at him. He's a demigod now. Roo. Roo. I'm not even participating in that. They need a new gig. put her up again because this man happens to be a black belt in Norse mythology what do you see when you see big earl like that uh well he reminds me of uh no it reminds me of oh my goodness what a picture i hadn't taken that in it's amazing yeah i mean i will say thor gets drunk in a lot of Norse mythology so he looks a bit like that he does he's had a few and he's been tricked into getting drunk by an ice giant the car great great great great great great great great great great great great great grandfather who was a monk in the very north of england that image would have terrified this is yeah there will be people with long memories in in sort of the not on the northeast coast who have been treated by that yes the dwellers of the monastery island of lindisfarne sacked in 789 by the rapacious vikings what other football podcast not just uses the sack 789 but uses the word rapacious which is you just see me use that for the first time and i love it To make it all make sense, we're back on the bus.
2:50Rog:I've missed this place. The bus boy. I've missed the stench. When the bus is rocking, don't come a-pod in. Does that look like a bee? It probably doesn't. I'm trying this for the first time. I'm not quite sure you should do that. We should have workshopped this. I think that's a very rude gesticulation in the southern parts of Peru. No, don't do that either. That will not go down well in Western Fall, Germany. But this is, let me reintroduce you to these gents. I'm here with the Crown Prince of Harrogate. We've got a football threesome tonight, guys. The Crown Prince of Harrogate, my World Cup wife.
3:25Rog:Oh, it's Rory Smith. Being your World Cup wife has been a delight, Rog. I feel as though it's quite a healthy marriage. WCW. You don't quite well, you two. I think it is. Do you know what the secret is? Do you know what the secret is? Like all marriages, separate beds. Yes. I don't like it. I really hope that you guys were doing that Morcom and Wise style, matching little sleeping caps. Bert and Ernie. Yeah, we've been through our Bert and Ernie phase. Yeah, we did it. It's going head to toe. It just didn't somehow work. We didn't tessellate. This is the man who is to Wrexham, what Graham Potter is to cowboy hats.
3:59Rog:It's Mr. Humphrey, come. Hi, everybody. He's back on the bus, Rog. The filling of the busboy's sandwich. Oh, God. I love a football threesome. Matt Chris Voss in the chat says, you guys wearing pants or you go full zoom mode? hashtag tops on. We're all, I think we're actually all, despite the fact that it is literally an oven outside in Atlanta, we are all wearing trousers. We're all trousers up. Truth is, we are, we are. It's not a time, it's not a place for kilts. Atlanta is what I found. And we've got the mighty Keegan. Keegan Michael Key joining us in just a moment. Send us your questions for that incredible king.
4:32Rog:Humph, it's a joy to see you. We live streamed with Mario Balotelli a couple of hours ago. Can you confirm or deny he's going to be Wrexham starting number nine come August? listen, I'd love to have Big Mario turning out in the famous red, but I think from our chat with him, he seemed like he was having quite a good time just chilling in Italy. That was very much the energy of a man who's just having a good what was it called? Passagiotta. Passagiotta. Having a lovely passagiotta. That was a man going for a gelato. At least one. At least one. At least one. I love having you back because we can play such intellectual social games with you, which you do on all football podcasts now.
5:10Rog:with like, stay silent until I see a greater French person than Thierry Henry. Are you ready for this? Yeah, yeah, okay, okay. Here we go. Edith Piaf. Claude Monet. Victor Hugo. Oh, I do love Les Miserables. I really do. I probably am. I'm saying Victor only because of the musical. Are you tapping out? Who else is on the list? I had Voltaire. I kept quiet for him. Yeah, Marie Curie. Same. Really? Yeah, come on. One trick pony. Wemby. Yeah, he's got to be a winner first, hasn't he? Bigger. Joan of Arc. I think I'd probably would have spoken. Well, I mean, she was an apostate to the English, wasn't she?
5:53She's just a rebel. One of our great actors.
5:55Rog:Then they had Thierry Henry, in case he wanted to use himself in the third person, like Zlatan. God, it was a good one. I think Serge Gainsbourg might have got you talking at the end. We've become very interested, before we get into these games, for a reason I can't even remember at this point, with worm burners. Do you know what a worm burner is? I don't know what a worm burner is. Shall we show him the graphic? Yeah, would you like to explain what it is? So you will know, Humphrey, the term daisy cutter. Yes, yeah, yeah. So it's a shot that travels rapidly but along the ground. Yes. America is an evocative and inventive place, and I believe this actually comes from golf.
6:32The YouTube comments last night suggested it comes from golf. believe that Daisy Twitter is twee in English. And so they prefer Worm Burner. That's quite cool. Do they have daisies in America? Can we confirm or deny that? Daisy Duke. Yes, sure. She was a daisy. You didn't want to cut her.
6:49Rog:We want to celebrate Erling Haaland. Less of Worm Burner, more Worm Tickler to be kind of. But we use any... Worm Burner. That's our Worm Burner. Yeah, and I'm raising this today because at great expense, stretching our budget to its tightest constraint to honour the memory of Jonathan Tarr and his penalty. We've now got the concept of bird burner. And thanks to you beautiful lot at home who put together a massively expensive GoFundMe, which raised$3.25, the world now has this.
7:25Bird burner. I like the study of questioning. Voice of a bird burner. Was it a sort of posh British accent?
7:35Rog:Bird burner. We just took it and raised it a couple of octaves. God bless Rip Penelope Keith. Let's not be sad tonight. Keith Rotorowski in the comments says, Dr. Congo uses the worm burner. Nice. We save that for our pre-match previews. And at UC, dog, zero, zero. By the way, worm burner in Spanish baseball terms is que ma homigas, an ant burner. Okay, yeah, yeah. They'd suffer the same fate. I like that. Let's just keep getting this global. It's so fascinating. We're going to get a complaint from Peter at the current radio protest, aren't we? This podcast is today in etymology. Let's do it. We have just come from Mexico tonight.
8:16Rog:Este Noche, Mexico 2, Ecuador nil. I'm happy. I'm happy for our Mexican friends because they had to face not just their opponent, but their greatest fear tonight. Three games played, three games run, but could they make it to a fifth game of a World Cup for the first time since, oh, forever. Mexico have made it to the knockouts. They've fallen at the first hurdle every single time since 1986. And Quinto Partido, the fifth game, it's one of the most, I find it, fantastically fraught. It's almost psychological at this point, Roy. It's probably the greatest in world football. And this match really began the night before.
8:55Rog:And scenes that would have made my friend Diego Luna very, very proud. He came on our show last week and he said this. I think they didn't cut the memo, right? Like people in Guadalajara were supposed to make them feel uncomfortable, keep them awake at night, use mariachis, you know, like cut the water from the hotel once in a while. Like what about those techniques that were wonderful? If you see Mexico 86, you see how those techniques were actually part of the plan. The game's gone. The game is gone. He was annoyed by this World Cup of Love. Yeah. He wanted... Woke nonsense. Yeah. I just say that in Spanish.
9:39It's a good question.
9:40Rog:Yeah, he didn't want Ruka Rota. No. He was calling for change. And I do think this show was heard resoundingly across Mexico because last night, outside the Ecuador team hotel, these were the scenes.
9:57is that the mexican emergency service is doing that this guy now is just amazing
10:04Rog:there's a guy lets off this this guy just amazing can you imagine just buying that just for this grown man truly massive gathering outside ecuador's hotel in mexico fireworks show that any mid-sized July 4th city would be proud of. Seven-piece drum kit, dozens of cars revving their engines. This was my favorite video.
10:32Rog:Group of Mexican fans banging on a jug of water like a drum, doing their version of Norway's famous row at the same time. This is in the middle of the night. Ecuador's Federation issued a statement calling on authorities to safeguard, quote, the integrity of the match. Promised they'd respond on the pitch. Humph, do you look at this and you're like, it's just an average night out in Wrexham. Yeah. Well, I saw a line of riot police over there, and that's obviously something we're all very familiar with from every town centre in the UK on a Saturday night. And, yeah, I mean, look, you know, ultimately, you've got to play the occasion sometimes.
11:09Not the man. Don't play the man, play the occasion. That does mean people will shoot fireworks out there. arse outside your hotel at 3am. It's an important football tradition. If you play a Champions League game away in Istanbul, that is what happens. You are used to that. I think it happens in Liverpool now as well. I think when Liverpool host teams, they will generally have fireworks fired near the hotel. Waiting for the buses to arrive feels like a new thing in the last few years where all of a sudden it's become a case of like, this is an opportunity to really intimidate the opposition as they come in.
11:42I would imagine, I mean, the Ecuadorian players, I can't say for certain, but I would imagine they do have access to earplugs. I think it probably wasn't a major factor. I'm not sure how effective it is. I don't want to criticise Diego Luna, but I think they probably have ways around it. Never criticise Diego Luna. I would refuse to. He's a prince.
11:57Rog:Not to go all Wolf Blitzer on your asses, but it is worth noting there's like tectonic political plates under this. April 2024, the Ecuadorian police raided the Mexican embassy in Quito, former Ecuadorian vice president, you know him, Jorge Glass in hiding, convicted of receiving just$30 million in bribes. Two countries have cut all diplomatic ties. Ecuadorians posting en masse they were going to break into the Azteca like they did the Mexican embassy and take lots of prisoners. Football bans, classic. This is just like, this is more Jake Tapper, this is more Wolf Blitzer. But, I mean, this was a seething kind of background to a game of football in a World Cup that's otherwise been full of love.
12:37Spicy. I was not Not aware of any of that. I've got to admit that is a new story that had passed me by the rivalry between Mexico and Ecuador. Well, I'm just giving you the background. This has been educational.
12:46Rog:And to add to the mania, thunderstorms raged above the Azteca as fans arrived, bucketing down rain. When it all kicked off an hour late, Aguirre announced 17-year-old Gilberto Moore would get his second start. Youngest player to represent El Trey. Incredible to watch him. Against this really muscle, old experience, midfield Caicedo and the lot. Both teams, they came out. we were told this was going to be a defensive game. They came out totally with adrenaline pent up. They've been in that locker room for an hour extra. And it's all that noise. It must've been crazy. It was a lot of muscle, a lot of long shots.
13:20Rog:Raul Jimenez, header's not taken. Ecuador, you know, but they are aggressive again, pent up in that extra hour in the stadium. They had Yeboah smack a post, but then Kinonez rule. Oh, just a stunning, probably one of the, yeah, had just the standout names of this sprang just inside his own half head down the flank. I think on Mexican radio, they call him the Colombian born superstar El Colombo Mexicano. And he just charged on cut inside. And what did he do with that ball? Because he made the whole stadium explode. Yeah. The reaction was incredible. The shot was so, so powerful. It was really kind of spectacular, brilliant finish.
13:58He has been kind of a really kind of wonderful presence in this tournament because, and this is kind of giving myself way a little bit. I'd never heard of him. Colombian player who goes to Mexico, was really good in Mexico, decided to take Mexican citizenship because he felt overlooked by his native homeland and now plays for Alcadzia, my boyhood soundy team. Always been a fan. Big cad's head. Big cad's head. Love their shirt in whichever color it is and their badge with that animal. That thing. But he's not someone... That animal or crest, TBD. I am not alone in not really having seen him play.
14:35There will be lots of people around the world who've never seen him play. And that used to be one of the magical things about the World Cup, was that you would suddenly discover these footballers. And younger viewers slash listeners will not have had this experience. There was no FIFA. There was no kind of massive internet database. You can go on Twitter and see, have a look at this guy tearing it up. There was no YouTube highlights set to terrible EDM. You just sort of watch the World Cup every four years. And here was like Dragan Stojkovic. And he was amazing. Scalacci. Scalacci. we talked about Stalazzi before and that is one of the is one of the pleasures of the World Cup is discovering a player and I've got to admit I thought that it had been lost as our knowledge generally is so comprehensive now but Quinonez along with Saibari of Morocco and stuff has been one of the genuine stars of this tournament scored the first goal this explosive presence on the left wing from Mexico and it's really refreshing I'm delighted to be delighted by a player I've not heard of Yes, that is such a good point it is so fun I think it like James Rodriguez again when he had the breakout World Cup and I'm sure again and probably lots of people say, oh, you're not a proper football hitter.
15:36I think his XG for Monaco that year was actually... Exactly. But yeah, that's such a good point. And again, I suppose in some ways you would direct that back towards the expanded field. I mean, Mexico, obviously a team that would be quite synonymous with the World Cup in a way. And same for Morocco of late, have been a team with African combinations and various things have really put themselves in the kind of spotlight and put themselves in the top 10, 20 teams in the world. But yeah, I know exactly what you mean. It is really fun to be like, oh, who's that? Yeah, he's really good. And then it's only slightly depressing
16:12Rog:to learn that he plays in Saudi Arabia. Who's that that I'm going to be signing for Wrexham? He's an incredible man. Turned down a call-up, as we talked about, from Colombia because he was, quote, tired of being ignored. Nobody's ignoring him right now. Watching him charge off with his mouth open, and he's got a full set of retainers, just like brace-face killer. Just adored that man. No man can stop him. Only popcorn and leafy greens. Just love that moment. And that is so life-affirming. Just the relief, the release, high-octane madness. Exact opposite of what we've been told. We were sold it was going to be a very defensive grind in battle.
16:52Rog:31 minutes, Ecuador crumbled again. Ordonez really just puffed the clearance straight to Jimenez, flung it out to Canones, who I thought showed incredible restraint in this moment. A couple of minutes ago, dude had cut inside, slapped it like that. This time, I mean, you would be like, I'm going to do that. I want that high again. I want that feeling again. He served it back to Jimenez, whose first touch was divine. His second, the way he opened his body and hammered home, just like an explosive detonation of love and joy. This man had lost his father in March. is clearly still grieving, delivering for his nation in that place, a holy place, the Azteca, just falling to his face on the turf and sobbing.
17:37Rog:Football's beautiful. It's the best. I look forward to seeing him at the race course next season for Wolves. The Canunes. I really do not. I'm very nervous about having him. Oh, but that'd be amazing. Obviously, he's a threat, but from a retin point, to have a player of that caliber play there is incredible. It's very exciting. No, no, no. I thought you were announcing a transfer. No, no, no. He signed for Wolves. He's signed for Wolf. I know, but I thought you were like, I'd look forward to seeing him at the race course, period. I was like, wow, you move fast, bro. Yeah, yeah. Benonez and Jimenez.
18:06Rog:And Balotelli. Yeah, and Balot. Big Balot. Coming off the bench. Keegan, when he comes on, he... He just didn't come here to podcast. He came here to Tampa. But Jimenez, we have talked about this before, Roger, after he started his first goal on that first night. Raul's story is amazing. I spoke to him a few years ago after the head injury. Him and his partner, wife maybe then, or girlfriend at the time, wife now, Daniela. His me to you. Yeah, exactly. His equivalent. Okay, now I understand the context. George made it clear. This. What were you doing at the beginning? The bus boys. What happens on the bus?
18:45Rog:Thanks. Keep going. Tell them my story. I spoke to them both. And when I talked to him and what he went through with a head injury, it's obviously really harrowing and haunting but then when you talk to her and what she went through with the head injury is genuinely terrifying they've got they had a little they've got two now but they had a little baby at the time it's really like they have been through an absolute ordeal and for his career to have this coda where he gets to store his first world cup goal on home soil at the azteca where he then gets to store the goal that we learned when we're in seattle that in lumen field the stadium there there's seven earthquake centers because it's a seismic and they pick up goals, which is a nice little, you know, isn't it funny that they make the earth move?
19:25They'll have picked that one up from the Azteca all that way because the noise, the way the stadium shook was astonishing. And for Jimenez to have that moment is beautiful. It is really cool. I mean, I say it's an aspect of this World Cup that I hadn't anticipated is how fun it is. You know, I was at Ecuador, Germany. I mean, the atmosphere of that was unreal. And, you know, the ability for both like, you know, American diaspora fans or fans that are coming from other parts of the world. We made him say it. What, diaspora? Was that the secret word? It is the secret word. That's our safe word. All right, you know in the trousers of the whole thing.
19:59We have a thing, we have a thing. There's a punishment if you get tricked into saying the word.
20:03Rog:You're now in the Masons, son. You're now in the Masons. Look how they cut away from the handshake. Whoever's on the switcher is either properly in the Masons or else is worried about like us doing something that the FIFA bar referees do on camera. I don't like. Detection. Bit of this business gets sent off. No, but you know, the huge profusion of Ecuador fans in the MetLife Stadium just made it fantastic. You know, the German fans are great. They did their best, but it was like, it was an Ecuador home game. You know, obviously, this literally is a Mexico home game, but like those, the atmosphere has been great in a way that, you know, perhaps if you go back to a Germany World Cup or whatever it may be, it's not quite as jumping because you've got lots of sort of middle-class Europeans going.

20:50Yeah, definitely. That has been one of the defining things. I don't know how they've all afforded to do it, but given the city prices, but the Latin Americans and the North Africans generally make to the tournament these days. That's where the party is.
21:02Rog:Spanish television called this the greatest half ever. Mexico players all dapping each other up at halftime as if this one was in the bag. Came out, sat deep, let Ecuador knock the ball pretty much side to side without any real confidence, belief. It was like they'd been bled out, just the shock, the awe, the passion had overwhelmed them. They were done. Game ended with Incappier getting sent off for putting his hand over his mouth. I kind of love, I cry for you not, that they had to go and var that. Like, was he looking, the referee was like, was he looking like, is it, is it? Let's have a look.
21:35Rog:Rewind number, yeah. Is he foghorning it? Is it really? One of those? One of those. Incappier showed his arse again, but in a different way tonight. I'm not Mexican. I don't cheer for Mexico, but I found it so unbelievably moving to watch the scenes of just what Brene Brown calls collective effervescence across Mexico. They're all over immediately, even massively. We watched one, the Dodgers game. The pitcher's about to pitch and a guy sitting behind home plate in a Mexico shirt just leaps up. They just scored. It's like, yes! It's like, it is stunning. the scenes of ecstasy disbelief and pride they're just the third team to open a World Cup with four victories and four clean sheets I mean my God the joy the wonder but most of all the curse exercise it feels like a religious moment but probably even more miraculous to be honest yeah it's it's kind of what Mexico wanted from this World Cup isn't it it's this this has made it all worthwhile they've been they were brilliant in the group flawless in the group do you know the last time they've conceded a goal in the first half in a World Cup.
22:46Yes, but I want to know if you know. 2010. Wow. That's a long time ago. Yeah. That's a long time ago. And normally what happens is they get to the knockouts, they run into Argentina and they get knocked out and it's slightly unfortunate. Similar sort of trap to the one Japan I caught in where they finish second in a group in a 32-team model and that means they get a difficult last 16 tight and that's it, go home. Yeah. This time, they've exercised the curse. They will probably have England at the Azteca in the last 16. I wouldn't expect the English players to get much sleep. Good night before that game.
23:16I think there will be traffic outside.
23:18Rog:One suspects. All the dirty tricks. I've got a suggestion for them. They should probably stay in an AC hotel from the Marriott Bonvoy. Absolutely, yeah. I don't know why. You love a Marriott. You live in a Marriott. I love a Marriott. I live in a Marriott Bonvoy. I've lived on, I think, 320 days a year. I've got to make sure I get my points. What? I'm a Marriott Bonvoy member. Let's not brag, Humphrey. Come on. Come on. It's the only credit card I could get when I first moved to America. At Dan, 1619, England, no la ruta, la Azteca. Yeah, England, no la ruta, la Azteca. They are better out of his mouth.
23:55Rog:At Josh Regan, 2782. It's a worm burner diaspora. God bless. At Loxy, the maker. I love the tournaments getting so conca-caf. This one I love. At Hayasha. I swear that guy with the car noises lives around the back of ours. I've got to get me one of those actually got to get me one of those for Bosnia and Herzegovina tomorrow in San Francisco earlier this morning Au Jouer Duit France 3 Sweden 0 this was Daft Punk versus Swedish House Mafia it was Wemby against Mondo Duplantis it was Thierry Henry against the Lion known as Zlatan we talk about a German notion of Tournier Mannschaft the team who slowly build into form throughout the tournament.
24:41Rog:The French have barnstormed into form from the very opening whistle. All three of their group games strolls, combined score 10-2, killing Mbappe and Dembele four goals each. It feels borderline to say this. It feels like they've not quite clicked yet, Roar. I mean, mostly because they've not been challenged. They're not threatened. They just look like some kind of apex predator playing the food before getting impatient. Yeah, I think partly it's just the sheer weight of talent up front, isn't it? is the fact that Deschamps, who is this quite cautious coach, has decided, it's his last World Cup, he's decided he's won.
25:14He's got very close to winning in 2022 as well. He seems to have decided he wants to be fun. He's reinventing himself. He is. And he's playing, I mean, it was Barcolder today instead of Douay. I'm not your dad anymore. I'm your fun uncle. I'm your fun uncle. Fun Didier.
25:25Rog:Yeah, fun Didier. Of all the Didiers, I think Fun Didier's probably in my top 20. He'll come out in a kind of Ronald Kimmer style T-shirt. Yeah. By the way, he'd wear that T-shirt unbelievable. He's still, Didier is proper, proper hard. But God bless. Great to see him back after the agony of attending his mother's funeral in France. Everyone knew. Graham Potter said Sweden have to be perfect to have any chance, especially when defending. That's the key. Between France and others, France can play their game. The other teams have to be perfect. France can be far from it. But we knew going in, you said this on our live stream, round 32 has its own kind of sick magic.
26:08Rog:We've seen Germany fall off like 11 Hans Gruber's. But this name never felt like this. Graham Potter sat Sweden deep, trusted Jokeres and Alanga could run in burst of quality. They really tried to hold on. They tried to frustrate France. It worked a little bit. France snatched to their early chances. Snazzy run from Bradley Barcola. They'd soon blast the ball skyward. Not quite a bird burner. Mbappe offside. An offside that was really as tight as Ronald Koeman's T-shirt. Michael Alise rocking a 90s-era high pony, scrunchy combo, like some kind of extra lethal Kimmy Gibbler. But then there was a stunning having God moment.
26:48Rog:This is bizarrely one of my moments of the day. That Capoeira-style sideways kick that Michael Alise hit the woodwork. Almost all the more beautiful for doing so. It would have been one of the goals of the World Cup. When I used to play football with a bunch of comics in London, we always used to say that hitting the woodwork was actually more fun than scoring a goal because the sound, the sense of like... It also meant that it was almost always a great effort because it was arrowing into the corner or into the top 90 or whatever it is that Alexey Lalas loves saying. Top bins. What's he say? Like, upper 90, that's it.
27:28Oh, yeah, I'll put the Americans over 90. Children say top bins. Top bins, yeah, yeah. and yeah, it was a thing of wonder, but yeah, I mean, of course it will disappear into the dustbin of history because no one will remember that because they'll think of Mbappe's goal. You know, I have always regarded you as one of football's great thinkers. I was aware of that. You're aware of that. We've made that very clear. Do you know who else was one of football's great thinkers? Albert Camus. Dutch maestro Johan Cruyff. Oh yeah. Do you know what Johan Cruyff said? I think you're going to say Mario Balotelli.
27:54Also one of football's great thinkers. Do you know what Johan Cruyff said? No. In agreement with you, he said that when you're winning, it is better to hit the woodwork than to score. If you're winning 3-0, it's better to hit the post or the bar. Because if you score, the fans just go, yeah, great goal, well done. Yeah, yeah. Because if you hit the bar, everyone goes, ooh, that's a really good point. And it's a more emotional response. It's a great release, though. Yeah, yeah. And that was, we were on a live stream.
28:18Rog:Yeah. And that was a genuine light. Yeah, there was a shriek. I don't want to talk about my medical conditions. I got like an electric shock in my nipples. I'm becoming quite worried about your nipples. You are? As your podcast. They're very attuned. They're very attuned to the football. Do they pick up radio signals? Huh? Maybe the humidity. You think? Yeah, it's allowing the electric charge to be carried in the atmosphere. You want to watch out. You want to ground your nipples every night before you go to bed. I've been wearing rubber shoes. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's very sensible. To be on the safe side.
28:47Rog:You know what I mean? I will say, I love it when I feel like that. And Michael, at least I'm more than any other footballer, makes you feel like that. He's got such unbelievable free expression. He does the dirty work. He recovers the ball. It's a side of his game we don't talk about enough. But once he's got that ball, he leaps forward. It's like watching one of the greatest spoken word poets of all time. There is something very avant-garde about Alise. There really is. You use that word before I'm stealing it from you. But it's a really good way of putting it. What did you use? Rapacious. Rapacious.
29:16Rog:Okay, I'm stealing that word from you. So before the end of the night, you've got to steal one from that bad boy. Well done. First off, it felt like Sweden were getting to their game plan. That narrative that we always insert. Will France rue their missus? They felt like they're going to get to the locker room, the French, and sit around and smoke a little cigarette, a little jitan, a little boodily, and just be like, yeah, tiny little coffees. Breathe them on. Yeah, and just, you know, scratch themselves, have a quick affair. Life. Life is traffic. Yeah, just do something. Quickly shoot and edit a 102-minute black and white film.
29:50Yes. About a bereft child. Yes. Imposable. It's really about the collapse of French colonialism.
29:55Rog:Yeah, and then in the corner, Michael Elyse will just be doing some mime. It'll be amazing. The idea of them just having a quick affair is amazing. What do you think? That was Graham Potter's plan. I am depressed. I'd better have an affair. Let's get into there. Let's get into there. And, you know, I'm so sweaty. Shall I wash? No, you know what? I'll just spray some cologne on. It'll be fine. No one will notice. This is what Graham Potter's plan was. And it almost worked. He would have got away with it if it wasn't for you. Pesky and Bappe. Kids, yeah. I mean, they were so bloody close. France felt like they tied someone to the railroad track and somehow they'd escaped 72 % possession, 14 shots, couldn't finish any of them, but 15th shot.
30:36Rog:How do you say that in French? D 'Espanf. No, Kanzian. There you go. Thank you. I'm with such a class assist. Mbappe came to life. Short corner. Lise, Dembele, Mbappe, all the A's. Mind melded. Angle, space, sense of it. Combination passing. Got the ball to Mbappe. The call was suddenly coming from inside the Swedish house. Mafia. Yes. God, I walked into that. Mafia here. Hello. Who's on the phone? Hello, sir. We've come to kill you all. It's the Swedish house, Mafia. Swedish house, Mafia. No, you've got the wrong number, sir. God, anyway, just the way he premeditated the step over, the double touch, the freezer defender, the emphatic finish, relief, release, total vibe switch.
31:18Rog:which, Roy, you said on our live stream, what he did with the caressing of the ball at high speed was impossible to defend. Yeah, someone that an actual defender, an actual footballer told me was that when players are cutting inside, you can defend the first touch and you can defend the shot, but they knock you off balance by taking the second really quick touch. And that makes you stumble. And that's the space. And that's when Mbappe, in this case, puts it in the corner. It was a brilliant goal. It was so calm. Yes, it really was. That was the thing that was so strange about it. It felt almost for a second, I was like, hang on, what's happening?
31:51Is the referee blown up or something? Yeah, yeah, yeah. It felt like that moment, he just had so much time in that moment to sort of stick it in that you felt like, has everyone else stopped? But he had just accelerated past the sort of the median speed of everybody else involved in what was going on.
32:05Rog:And what I loved about the moment was Mbappe is locked in. He is thinking about Messi chasing the golden boot, winning the spotlight commercially in America, the biggest legacy. But in that moment, none of this mattered. ran to the bench, wrapped up his manager, Deschamps, in a bereaved, you know, son back from burying his mother bear hug. And again, it was a beautiful human moment. Yes, it feels like there's been a World Cup that's been replete with those, with what happened with poor Cody Gakpo and his partner and then this moment and then, you know, Ralph Humez as well. It's, you know, as I said before, we are all football evangelists.
32:45We love it and we love people getting into it more and like i think this is an amazing way of doing that it's like i've always thought that sport getting people in sport is so often about giving them the context of what's going on you know when i when i first went to to watch a baseball game i went to see the red sox versus the blue jays at fenway park and with my my pal and we were really lucky because we sat with these people who immediately clocked we had no idea what was going on and why and they just talked us through the whole what's happening right now what's the context in the league as a whole in the American division and all this, that and the other and what's happening in the game at all times.
33:20And I left as a new fan. I love baseball. It's my favorite American sport since then. And I think this World Cup has had lots of...
33:26Rog:Chess with chewing tobacco. Right, right, right. Yeah, and I think this World Cup has had lots of those little moments that give people a hook into why this matters. I mean, it's the World Cup of love unless it's in Mexico City, England, UF. Ecuadorian. I mean, it was very, very beautiful. And Bappe said there are things, more important things in the World Cup, More important than anything, it's in our DNA to be there for each other. We're all behind our coach, no matter what. We'll get back to that after the hug, the Clint Dempsey salute. Most goals in World Cup knockouts, nine, soon to be 10 in this game.
33:58Rog:Still only 27, this kid. It's just undeniable. Frantzen beaten in their last 29 World Cup games when he scores the first goal. When they scored the first goal, a run stretching all the way back to 1982. I think Olivier Giroud, age 30, was already on that team. You knew in that moment that it was game over, or Sweden would have to kind of press forward, and then they'd be so vulnerable, the gaps would turn into cracks. 53rd minute, Mirko Lelise, Nutmeg, Lagerbilka. We talked about him a lot on the screen, not for his footballing reality, but because he's the rare Swedish player who comes from a noble family.
34:35Rog:This is coat of arms. His current title, free hair. It's like a count or a duke or something. Is that not what you do in Turkey? Free hair. Yeah, that's where they get it from. If you've got a hookup. That's where they get it from. He's essentially the Swedish version of a Baron. He's one of yours. He's a fancy boy, like what I am. And I salute him. He is living the dream of every posh lad who is always like, oh, you know, if I just had less opportunities, maybe I could have made it as a professional sports person. I wish it had been the only way out. Yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was one of many ways out.
35:11and one of those ways out was just sort of hanging around on my sofa playing video games. I took that off. It was so much easier.
35:17Rog:That is the essence of football. It's that deep desire to get out of the mansion house that drives all this football. And into a different type, different slightly tackier mansion. Yeah, yeah. That's what you're trying to do. Yeah. Same to the butler. I'd like a crib. Yes. One of these days I'm going to own my way to a crib. Yeah, baronial manor. I don't want this gigantic pile. I want something that's all brushed black steel and white marble. Whatever it was, his family's noble lineage did not prevent him from the nutmeg, and the young Baron ended up tangled on all fours. I don't think that look's going to be commemorated on the family tapestry.
35:52Rog:Bradley Barcola picked up the pass, fired it into the centre of the goal, total bullseye. It's like watching a little Villa Barn-born Luke Littler. Stunning. Kind of goal we've not seen much in this tournament. We've seen a lot of individual brilliance. This was team goal, the kind you need to have club chemistry to conjure. or and i'm still workshopping this theory i wonder if it's just a matter of absolute quality i wonder if there is some truth in that thing of just quality like players of of like genuine elite ability instantly understand each other a phenomenon that i i found quite fascinating that once or twice uh mr philip parkinson manager of wrexham afc has has said to me around players that we've had is there have been instances where he said i think this lad's actually too good like he's he looks less good because he is too good interesting he's anticipating he's seeing things other people aren't doing he's anticipating runs and movement bits and pieces yeah yeah and he's playing passes that like frankly other people are not able to pick up on in the squad yet maybe they will hopefully we had peter beardsley came from liverpool to everton just an incredible guile filled player when he played for everton he'd often just pass the ball out of bounds and you think, oh, he doesn't care.
37:04Rog:The only truth to us, he's used to playing with really good players. He's anticipating the run. His passes were brilliant. He was just playing with a load of idiots. I feel the same when I play football. You feel the same? Yeah, I look like garbage, but I'm actually really broke. He feels the same when he podcasts with us. Look, there was more. The heat, 90 degrees has made the Swedes crumble. The heat in this World Cup this week, I think, is going to be truly the determinant. It was all huff, puff, melt. They were gas turned into really an exhibition, 74th minute Mbappe filthy back heel to Barcola Fedelise slipped it back to Mbappe knew exactly where the goalkeeper Zetterstrom was going to be before Zetterstrom did 3-0 we were on with Mario Balotelli when that ball went in and we were like oh my god that fit he was not that impressed with the finish I was very impressed with the finish and Mbappe's tied that with Leo Messi for the golden boot six goals just one behind Messi all-time world cup 18 goals in 18 games when he He was subbed out.
38:00Rog:His own manager, Didier Deschamps, dug deep into the Wayne's World archive and gave him the we are not worthy bow, which probably sounds better in French. I do believe Mbappe was thinking about a different Wayne's World line. He was thinking about the golden boot, the all-time record, and just saying, she will be mine. Oh, yes, she will be mine. You distracted us on the live stream by referring to the show wing thing, which is something I would really like to see brought into football. That's amazing that that lied in me. I watched Deschamps do the thing. I was just like, showing. Where's that living you when you don't use it?
38:33Rog:Was the showing not like a thrust? It was a bit. Yes, I remember Dana Carvey doing a bit of a little pump. Was that a Viking route you would just do for me? A little tepid Viking route. I mean, to see Deschamps do that to Mbappe as he came off the field, to see him showing it would be amazing. Questions being asked in French Parliament. I think Mbappe was annoyed to be brought off. Genuinely. I think he hid it relatively well, but there was an element of man sat on bench fuming. He still wanted a hat-trick. I think we've also just solved the chant issue for the United States soccer fans. What if we just spend the whole game doing shawing?
39:12Rog:Oh, yeah. It'd be amazing. He, badda, badda. Oh, God. Let's go into the movie archive. No one else can beat us. Bosnia, you're going down. I'm not sure France has ever looked this dominant since the Battle of Hastings, which your ancestors are at, right? Sure. But on which side? Normans, of course. The winning side. Yeah. Look at that look. Oh, yeah, baby. Yeah, I mean, it's true that they are quite terrifying. As someone who has a passing interest in another team in this tournament, you do find yourself going like, oh, Lorcs. I don't know quite how this is going to have a happy ending for anybody of another country's persuasion.
39:54Rog:I mean, you do look at it. I've never seen Mbappe play this freely or this joyfully. This is what's amazing to me, Ru. You know, watching him embrace the teammates at the final whistle. They are having fun, man. The chemistry. Jürgen Klinsmann said to us, like, ultimately, seven weeks these guys are in the big brother house. Like, the ones that love each other, they're enjoying it. It's going to make the difference in the back half of this tournament. You know, France, first team to score three-plus goals for five games straight in a World Cup. to watch an international team with so much bloody chemistry, so much continuity, the interchanging.
40:26Rog:Even a goalkeeper, Manjan, has been really good in the couple of minutes he's been called upon. The great philosopher, Chad Okosinko, an ex-essentialist, I think, he asked this question. I'm going to give it to you, Roar. How can anyone stop this French front line? And how would you even do it? How can you shut down Mbappe, Alise, Dembele, Dwey, Barcula, dot, dot, dot? I think you have to starve them at the ball. I think the only team that can maybe stop them is Spain. Spain don't have the cutting edge, but I do wonder if the Spanish can just sort of move them around. We know that there was that mad stat, wasn't there, over the season when no player in Europe's top five leagues tracks back less than Kylian Mbappe.
41:06And Dembele and Alise work a bit harder and Dwayne Barcola are pretty good at sort of doing the defensive stuff. But I think if you have a team that can move them around, that can keep the ball away from them, I think that is the only way to stop them. You just have to starve them of possession and try and grind them down to an extent, but also exploit the fact that they will ultimately be defending with nine.
41:28Rog:I love this stat. France have beaten both Sweden and Senegal in MetLife Stadium this summer, which is more dubs than the New York Jets had in the entire 25 season. Sorry, Jets, just catching strays everywhere. But I love stats. Josh Ragan 2782 says, Roger's nipples tingling. You may want to see the Dr. Congo tomorrow. they are in town I may go and get a little check up at ComGord and the chat says I'll just spray on some diaspora from the Mario Balotelli cologne line oh he smelled so good I don't know how people may not sort of watch the live stream of the live show in Philadelphia Mario Balotelli smells amazing yes I've heard you this is the second time you guys have told me today which suggests he really doesn't I think it was the first thing I said to Humphrey you'll know this why do footballers smell so good I don't know I think it might be because they have very good diets oh interesting That is a cracking theory.
42:19That's a suspicion of mine.
42:20Rog:What, 12 pints and a couple of pies, a cigarette? As someone who smokes, or I've given up smoking, but I smoked a lot of cigarettes. During that period, I definitely smelt worse than I do when I don't. It could be the diet, you know. It could be the diet. Andros Townsend, who was here working for British TV as a co-commentator, he used to play for Tottenham. Yeah. Andros is big into kind of raw food and stuff. Crystal Palace. And Crystal Palace. And everything. Crystal Palace of Asia. and Andros has got the best skin of anyone I've ever met by a mile. He's just a healthy boy. He's a healthy boy.
42:51He makes his own Easter eggs, Andros. That's an amazing stat. It's an amazing thing. He did an Instagram video and it was incredible. That's so good. He makes his own Easter eggs. Yeah, he doesn't like the stuff they put in chocolate. He doesn't like the artificial stuff. So he makes his, he's got a mould. He uses like coconut something, something better than palm oil and with proper cocoa solids makes his own Easter eggs. I genuinely have not had,
43:13Rog:in five days. I do not know how people have the time. I admire it greatly to make their own Easter egg. He's not doing it constantly. Or during this FIFA World Cup. Don't come at me. It's like fleeting Easter egg making. It's only at Easter. You're either going full wonker. You're either going full wonker. Like you're just all in. Like trying to drown Augustus Gloom. Children drowning in chocolate rivers. Anyway, new poll just dropped. Who's winning this round of 16 game? France or Paraguay? France, 85%. Paraguay, 15%. I think 15 % of voters had one too many Roger Loobes. Let's quickly go to Norway, two.
43:49Rog:Ivory Coast, one. Too close to call. Coming in, two teams of intellectual prowess, physical prowess. Norway just rested everyone in their final game. Ivory Coast manager, MFA, said, we respect Norway, but we didn't come to admire them. Respect is not fear. Kind of is in my book. It was an attitude. I'd love what he did at kickoff. He just stood on the sideline, pulled out his own stopwatch and just held it up in front of the referee for the whole game. He's doing his own research. Power move. Yeah, it's quite aggro. Why stop there? Why don't you just stand there with his own yellow and red cards?
44:23Rog:It'd be amazing. Was he standing there with a stopwatch to highlight the fact that all the games are kicking off late? I don't really know what the protest was. It's hard to read in this tournament. I get them all wrong all the time. I think he was just saying to the ref, just like... Hey, I'm watching you. Don't shortchange me. Or maybe... I want 90 minutes of loss injury time. I think that might be it. I want value for money. Look, it was an intriguing match from the start. Ivory Coast shielded the back line, had the game played in front of them, charged and they could on the break. Harlan, incredible.
44:53Rog:Three touches in the opening 30 minutes. He was nothing. Get back to that one. Lies Elephant kept the shape with discipline, but on 39 minutes, Martin Erdegaard fed 21-year-old Ahmed Nusa flying off the wing, drove in, squared up Nico Pepe, snapped off a shot, short back lift, caressed with incredible power and accuracy, pinged into the corner. It was like if a goal was made of monster energy. It was, yeah. This was a really good game. It was had a little bit of just France's display and then the tough wonder of Mexico. But it was a really well-poised game for a really long time. Yeah. He's an amazing player, Nusa.
45:29Rog:Teammate of Diamande at Leipzig. He's that electric kind of player, 21-year-old, where when he gets the ball, everyone's just edge your seat. He's a real dribbly bastard. A couple of years ago, they asked him how he became so good. He said, I watch clips of Neymar on YouTube and I just set out to copy him. It's that easy, Humpf. God, yeah. We've been doing it all wrong. I've been doing it all wrong. We've been doing it all wrong. You're not watching enough Neymar. That's what it is. That is evidently it. Yeah. I've always had it in for Neymar. Maybe that's why. I think I liked him. Are you not a hashtag team Neymar?
46:00Rog:No. When you're not a lover of Neymar, I think you are. Gone? What? What do you think, mate? Finish your sentence, Rog. Come on, then. What am I? He wrote... Worm burn. Do you like to burn worms? Can we play the worm burner thing, please? My favorite comment on the... Here we go. It's for you. Worm. Oh, worm. What is worm? Worm burn. Yeah! Woo! I love America. I watched this game with Gavin our colleague Gavin's a very good footballer and what I find amazing about the new score was the way he so he plans his foot and he kind of whips his right for his shooting foot round and the way he shapes it I think is really unnatural.
46:47I'm pretty sure I couldn't do that after many, many years of playing football. I'm not capable of making that shape with my foot and I said to Gavin, do you think you could do that? And Gavin said, yeah, I think so. Maybe on the second try. And he just paused and went it'd be harder if there were other players on the pitch though, which I thought was a brilliant way of
47:02Rog:putting it. At such high speed, that That was the velocity of a race. It turns out it's a lot harder if there's a keeper. Yeah. Oh, yeah. That's the problem. Also, if there's 5 billion people watching it. You know, Nusa is a player that's, you know, like James, better internationally as club level. But I do believe somebody's going to watch that goal and just come in for a lot, a lot of money after that one. All hail Martin Erdegaard. Just the third player in history to record an assist in each of his first three World Cup games. Second half, role reversal, Ivory Coast had to play high. Norway hung back, tried to play on the counter, came close off the corner.
47:36Rog:Incredible clearance off the line by substitute Ahmad Diallo, who had come on minutes earlier. Harlan already had thrown his arms up in celebration. He thought it was a goal. That's foreshadowing. The 73rd minute, inspiration again, threw Ahmad Diallo, picked the ball up in an innocuous position on the right, or so it seemed. But suddenly you watch it again, he's just got murder on his mind. Accelerated, exchanged a slick one-two on the edge of the box. with Nico Pepe. And then at speed, ball stuck to his foot, cut inside. You saw that it's like the two defenders, was it Wolf and Berger? Just their brains twisting.
48:11Rog:It's kind of bent time and space, chopped back. The pinpoint shot, he kind of bounced down and in, past Nyland. It was such an extent. It was like a footballing orgasm. I don't like to be hyperbolic. You're comfortable with that? Yeah. Well, as your podcast wife, it's fine by me. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, it was a lovely goal and it was, it was, it came up obviously an exciting time to set up a nice little grandstand finish to the game. I mean, actually, I feel as though very often in those situations over the course of this World Cup and many World Cups, you get into that, okay, there's a sort of, you know, 75 minute plus equalizer.
48:47Oh, this is going to start a really exciting finish. And then you get both sides get very cagey for the last 15 minutes and go into extra time. And actually, I think I had resigned myself to like, oh, this is, we've got an extra time on our hands here. Like, we'll see what happens. they'll kind of get their energy back, have an affair in the dressing room, whatever it is. Not the Norwegians. Not the Norwegians. Well, they dabble in fun.
49:11Rog:They dabble in pillaging. They do some light pillaging. They burn down a monastery. They sack a monastery and destroy a priceless book of hours that had been unpainted by Marx for 100 years. Patiently. Yeah, yeah. Wipe their arses on the Book of Kells. Where's my horn of mead? Yeah, yeah, yeah. but yes, all of a sudden who else but the Arch Viking himself Harold Bluenose Harold Bluenose you wouldn't say that to his face you would never say I'd love to be known as Harold Bluenose he's a real hero of Norwegian history Harold Bluenose is that a commentator? he's the king of the Vikings is that a compliment?
49:56Rog:sounds like a very sad Everton Sounds like a very sad, yeah. You don't want to sit at that stand. You've got Harold Bluenose in it. He's so... Harold Bluenose. Chew your ear off. Harold Bluenose is such an arsehole. Doesn't like Moyes, you know. Doesn't like Moyes. Well, he's out. God, Oscar Bob made the difference. True winger, subbed on from the flank, measured a wonderful pass into the ivory case box. I think it was Berg that launched onto it, squared it. He knew without even looking up who would be there or thereabouts. Big Earl, the Bluenose. Biggest man on the field. Somehow they're always a mark when it comes to the business time.
50:33Rog:By the way, terrible touch. Yeah, awful. Terrible. Yeah. The best thing about this goal is he does miscontrol it. Yeah. And then you see that momentary half second of panic. Yes. Where he's like, ah, like that. And then he realizes it's going in anyway and he tries to style it out. It's crazy. Style it out. Terrible touch. He'd only had 22 to this point. Just four in the opponent's box. Terrible finish. What's amazing, man does almost nothing the whole game. but is somehow inevitable. Look at him, a demigod. It made him very relatable for me, which is, my playing style is to do absolutely fuck all for 89 minutes, miscontrol the ball, just be a giant dog shit touch loser at the back post and then somehow it goes in.
51:15There's something to be said for that. It is.
51:16Rog:I'll tell you what to be said. Steve Kerr came on our show. Cousin Steve. It was an incredible three-point shooter. and he said, what is important about sports is to know your role at the highest level. Haaland does this, but he does it as a superstar. He's got the awareness constantly. He's not going to get a kick. He's not going to get a touch, but he still has that mental strength in that key moment, that one chance. And that's what I find truly incredible about him. You said about Mike Magnon, the French keeper, that he never really has anything to do, but he has to maintain focus. He's ready to do what needs to be done.
51:51Haaland is kind of the same. And he is doing stuff like he's making runs. He's occupying space. He's occupying thoughts. but he does have this ability to just sort of always be on and there is something incredibly compelling about erling harland he's a really fascinating superstar like in a way i think that this might not make me popular in france might reduce my chances of having a french affair in a way that i think mbappé is not i don't think mbappé is an especially fascinating character but i think harland is there's something really i like that he's just a bit of a silly sausage yeah yeah like that's what i that's how i would best describe him you big silly sausage he's just always doing weird little funny videos.
52:26I don't think there's a bigger,
52:28Rog:I don't think there's a more lethal footballing big silly sausage, if you put a list of footballing lethal big silly sausages together, I can't think of anyone. I mean, even if you take size out of it, who is football's silliest sausage? I don't know. These are the hard-hitting questions that they don't want you to ask yourself. Holland Wormtickler I enjoy greatly. That is a good caption. For all of this, though, and scoring for him is so routine, He seems so overwhelmed by this moment. That's what I love. He does have feelings, this man. His dad in the stands buried his face in his hands. It's taken so long for this team to get back to the World Cup.
53:04Rog:But this is his 60th goal in 53 appearances. 13 straight games scoring for the nation. Only the third player to score in each of his first three World Cup appearances. All Haaland's stats sound totally fake. But let me ask you this. Is the World Cup a Farmers League? He makes everything look like a farmer's league, doesn't he? That's the thing. He just makes everything look like a farmer's league. He's just a freak. He is a freak. In the nicest possible way. He's an absolute freak. He feels like a football manager regen. Yeah. Which, for people who haven't played the game football manager every now and then, you play long enough.
53:37Games create new players. And they're always supernaturally good. On some of the older console games, you used to be able to create your own player. Yes. And I had friends who would make themselves 6 '6 and 99 speed. Yeah. Which I always thought was cheap. Yeah. And I'm not friends with those people anymore. Yeah. But he's that. That's what he is.
53:53Rog:You're very judgmental, Roar. At Rye Hut says, cue the silly sausage animation. Let's get on it. By the way, just to recap, Harla, silly sausage, Blue Nose. Yeah. There was one other slight, but he's unbelievable. He's arch Viking. Blue Nose is not a slight. That is a cool guy from history. We'll save that for our other podcast today in Norse mythology. We're now doing that other podcast quite a lot, though. We are. Like a daily show. At some point, this becomes it, and it becomes this. But by the way, Incredible save at the death. Ahmad sent a free kick flying towards the corner. Nyland met it on the stretch.
54:26Rog:Don't like to be hyperbolic. Greatest Norwegian defensive action since Magnus Carlsen unleashed a Sicilian Neidorf opening. You know how it is. Ahmad sank to his knees, covered his face, knew it was dusted. First ever knockout win for Norway. First knockout goal since 1938. They are real. They're a team ready to give their all. You see the sense of destiny, the sense of joy taking hold, to take punches to haul themselves back into a game. I'll say Brazil-Norway, which is coming up, is an epic fist of fury. You know what we got? Gabriel against Haaland going global. Stay humble, A World Cup, Stiley.
55:06Rog:Oh, yeah, I'd not thought about that. A subplot. That will be fun. More than a subplot. I think the World Cup becomes the subplot to these two guys. Bad news, though, Raw. We've got the Viking row for at least another week. Get a new one, guys. Are we a little bit over the Viking row? Do you not think they need a new... I mean, this sounds just like... But the thing is, as the monks of Linderson would tell you, what happens when the Vikings stop rowing is the Vikings start... They're not doing bad things. Yeah, marauding. Yeah. Yeah. You know, you want them rowing and not marauding. I think it's better if they're still at sea.
55:35Rog:What's your top three things for Vikings? How would you order the marauding, rowing, pillaging? You want the pillaging skits. There's another one that starts with R that's a bit full on. Yeah. Reading. Reading. Yeah, yeah. They also speaking raving. That's good. When were they discovered ecstasy? They also, they just blissed out a bit. They, they also love burning a long ship. Don't they? Yes. Very cool. I love burning a long ship. That's the, that's the natural next stage. If they make that the semis, the Norwegian should really construct and burn an entire long ship. By the way, I don't understand when Jurgen Klopp left Liverpool.
56:05Rog:I'm pretty sure that he was put on a long ship on a pyre that sailed out into the Merseys and Virg van Dijk just did the arrow that flew out. Vroom. The whole thing was there. He went to, how is he doing German television? He's now been reincarnated as a man wearing cream leisure wear. Yes, he went to Valhalla. He sat in the halls of his ancestors. Yeah. Laughed heartily, yeah. Laughed heartily and quaffed a load of ale. And subtweeted Julian Nagelsmann so much that he's going to end up the next German manager. Cream leisure wear. That is what, oh God, Valhalla, I can't wait to get there. Probably will be there sooner rather than later in this 87-day World Cup.
56:42Rog:And as the world arrived in the United States, for the biggest spectacle in sports. We're going coast to coast, host city to host city to meet the world with the Men in Blazers Match Day Live Tour. These are free college game day style live events taking place just before kickoff at some of the biggest games of the summer where we'll be taking the stage with celebrity guests in front of thousands of fans. It's going to be amazing. Come and be with us in person or from afar on YouTube and let's celebrate this summer the way it's meant to be celebrated. head to the events tab on meninblazers.com for all the details.
57:19Rog:To the football, to more together, courage. But it's time for tonight's guest. I'm so excited. He does it all. He's a box-to-box comedian, writer, actor. His most enduring sketches have become just cultural touchstones. So many of his imagination creations have been quoted by someone you know today. You've been influenced. So many football celebrations have been created by this man unwittingly. You will have seen him recently in The Only Murders in the Building. You've heard him as Toad. Stole the entire Super Mario Galaxy movie, says everyone. You've caught him. Mr. Garving his way through some of the names in this World Cup with real joy.
58:02Rog:He's proper, proper football. Huge Belgium fan. And I adore him. It's a joy to welcome back. It's Mr. Keegan-Michael Key. Woo! Good evening, gentlemen. Yeah, probably. Do you have a proper... Yeah. I want to see more Americans, at least for the next couple of weeks, when we clap, we should clap like this, as if one's leaving the pitch. Yes, exactly. I would like to see more high clapping. You know what I mean? Showing respect to the fans. Yes, exactly. That's when we'll know that football's really become a thing when people are just like – When they're just clapping up. Everyone's constantly leaving the pitch.
58:41Yeah. Little wave to your family. Exactly. Right, right, right. Yes, very much. And I know, I know that you like baseball. So it's the same, you know, like a tip of the cap. Yes. Yeah. Little tip. Yeah. One birdies on the golf course or one hits multiple home runs. It's that kind of situation. I also want to say this really quickly. Please. I can't tell you how much I enjoy a conversation where Brene Brown, Albert Camus and Hans Gruber are all referenced. It's delightful. Absolutely delightful.
59:15Rog:They're all the same person. And also no shade. And people should be throwing absolutely no shade at Harold Bluenose. Thank you. Are you a Norse mythologist? A very simple person in Norwegian history. Are you joining us for the football? Are you joining us for our Today in Norse Mythology podcast? We can go either way right now. It's 4 o 'clock in the morning. We're ready for whatever you want, beautiful. We're all a bit punchy. I like to think Hans Gruber and Brene Brown would have really been friends at the end of the day. And that's what football does to you. It brings you together. It's a remarkable time in this nation for the game we adore.
59:53Rog:Keegan, have you experienced this World Cup, man? I have experienced. Well, the fact that I've been able to go to matches is something that's been really wonderful. Because I've been a World Cup fan for over 40 years. And it never occurred to me that I'd ever be able to attend a match. and the fact that I can go and be in that environment is actually, it's beyond anything I think I'll ever be able to experience at any other point in time in my life. I went to the very second game of the, was the second game? Was Morocco-Brazil the second game? But I went to Morocco-Brazil, which I - It feels like it was the third day.
1:00:31Rog:It feels like it was about five years ago now, Keegan. It does. I'm sure for you guys, it feels like an eon ago, like an epoch ago. But it was, but I remember the entire stadium, a sea of yellow and this small little red pocket. And I remember when Morocco scored, I couldn't understand what was happening in regard to decibels and my auditory system. I was like, how are they making as much noise as all of these Brazilians are making? It's just the commitment. you know, and a lot of American sport, often you'll see, you know, I'm one of those people who's very invested in what's happening in the moment.
1:01:11And I don't even, I can't comprehend how one can be on their phone. So it's lovely to be in a stadium when no one's on their phone. It's, it's, it's a, it's a wonderful experience, but in that, as well as this, this love fest that's happening, I've never experienced that before. And, you know, I, it just, it just, It's beyond me.
1:01:33Rog:Yeah. No way to be honest. This is not a football thing. Football, and it's the thing that draws me to it. It's a chance to hate with reason. You know, and they've taken it away from me. This has been the World Cup of love. It has been. By the way, it's almost as if the world has shaped this need. The world created this kind of like vacuum for football to fill. Soothing salve for humanity. Yeah, we needed this. America needed this. The world needed this. But it has been like these porous boundaries, people, well, you know, Scottish fan base welcoming everyone into their love and their terrible, terrible brand of football.
1:02:08Rog:It's been like the welcome joy and the reciprocal, the welcome of America to football fans. The Lawrence Kansas thing that we've often talked about. It has been the World Cup of Love. It's been very, very healing. It really has. And I feel like the healing, the healing is one aspect of it. I also think I've been racking my brain about this. I think the last time I was this invested emotionally, gosh, was 2010. I thought 2010 was a really good World Cup. This is a very, very exceptional World Cup. I mean, 2018 was special to me because Belgium made that deep, deep run. But I think it's all-encompassing.
1:02:52It's the love. It's the brand of football. I mean, yesterday I was at work. I was in the trailer. Apparently, I scared a makeup artist who was a good 50 yards away from me because I screamed at the top of my lungs, simply screamed the word Paraguay. I just screamed the word Paraguay because they just went like it. And she came and she says, is everything okay? And she goes, I heard someone scream Paraguay. And I'm like, well, then you know everything's okay. It does feel like a safe word. Yeah, I was going to say, it's a semester saloon. Your security team will be racing to, I presume you have a huge security team.
1:03:27If you don't, you should as a national treasure. Yes. My security team. It's a security team of three, me, myself, and I. So that's my security team.
1:03:38Rog:You mentioned Belgium. I mean, you are proper Belgian. You love this team at like Adolfo Sachs levels of Belgian pride. Remind us why. What in the Strootwaffles? and I know you've been to see them live this time. Give us a little, it's kind of a team of unks at this point. Can you just give us a mood check on your boys? Yeah, it's an interesting, well, you know, I think, I'll be quite honest, I have quite a bit of trepidation about them right now because as wonderful as watching that last match was, and now I'm going to say something, this isn't kind, but it was New Zealand. You know, I mean, I'm trying to be fair about the situation.
1:04:23It looked fantastic. The previous game was I was seeing a few times people not pulling triggers, and that's what I want to see. If I see somebody right in a half space and they're working a triangle and then somebody's open, kick the ball toward the net. there's real annoyance here there's real annoyance and I'm not going to say names I kind of want to say this but I'm not going to say names and then the last game the thing that made me the most happy wasn't necessarily the scoreline so much as when they put Salamakras in he was just like going for it going for it and you know what I mean I there's such a disciplined team there's an elegance to the way that they play um but i i i am very concerned about tomorrow and i am very concerned about senegal who i think also we can agree was part of the most dramatic thing that has happened in world football this year to watch that entire team walk off the field and rabat and to have sadio manes stand there with that defiance and go i'm not leaving the pitch it that was pure theatre.
1:05:34It was some of the best, most captivating football theatre I've seen in a decade. It was amazing. And like all great football theatre, it was settled three months later in a courtroom. Yes, exactly.
1:05:48Rog:I love that. As a few good men. But there is a rule. FIFA have introduced a rule. I did not realise this, but there is a rule that if you walk off the pitch now, it's a Senegal rule, if you walk off the pitch, game over, you lose. they have changed it because they don't want that to happen but they also love if you walk off stage because they can cut to commercial that's true you walk off on their terms they're actively encouraged to do that twice a game Keegan, how much do you my view on this Belgium team is that they're not very good but my view on the golden generation of Belgium is that we are unnecessarily harsh on what they have achieved because I think for Belgium, Keegan mentioned 2018 for Belgium to finish third in the World Cup is amazing.
1:06:33That is genuinely astonishing. And I mean, I watched this Belgium team when they were the young golden generation. I saw them in 2011 at Wembley, or 2012 at Wembley. And then when Dries Mertens was young and De Bruyne was young and, you know, they were 20-year-olds. It looked like they had gone to the world. For a nation the size of Belgium to finish third in a World Cup once is incredible. How much, Keaton, do you want them to kind of have a little bit of a golden farewell? It would be, that's actually a really elegant way of putting it. I would love to see them have a golden farewell. I would, that is wonderfully put.
1:07:05I would love to, you know, in, in my heart of hearts, listen, I, the, the best poetry would to see them, would to be to see them come in third again. Of course, the greatest thing would see if they went all the way and, and, and, and the character of this world cup maintains itself where teams were not supposed to be winning or winning, but I, I, if they make the quarterfinals, it will warm my heart. I will have, I will, I will sit down and have a Duvel and eat some luck. So that's what I'll do. So I, I, but, but I'm with you there. This is not that team. They are, they are definitely a shadow of, of, of that, that dynamo that that team was who, who I believe, listen, all teams play cupcake games, as we say in American football, as we say in gridiron football, but to be also to be number one in the world for a sustained, and I mean a really sustained amount of time, is an accomplishment in and of itself.
1:08:02But as you said, it is a generational thing to be third place. And by the way, they played that third place game in earnest, and they beat what I would consider an extremely good England squad. This was not a slouch game. They were for quite some time, they were just about perfection. Wonderful to watch. The style of football was wonderful. I just, yeah, they were great.
1:08:34Rog:I like them. I like them in this form where they're like a bunch of big unks back to try and commit one last crime. They're a Kevin James movie. You know who they could play? They are. Put the crew together. Delta National Team Mall Cop. Yes. It's a bit more like a Sander movie where it's got all the gang. He's got, you know, Rob Schneider and David Spade and Chris Ross and everybody. Rob House 4. Yes. Russell's edition. Schneid's big Rom Lukaku is the role of a lifetime. It really is. It's quite remarkable. You know, if they win this game, they could play in the Sweet 16. The winner of Bosnia versus our United States of America.
1:09:13Rog:I'm sure you're thinking about this. Before we get into the emotional multitudes, let's talk about the U.S. team. You went to watch them curse them when they played Turkey. That's said about that game. better but suddenly we're electric i don't i don't know i'm trying to think of a transformation that is like that we'd be good we'd be but but we were suddenly electric it's like it's like colonel holland sanders establishing kentucky fried chicken age 62 after living off social security for the early part of his life it's like the difference between the bob hoskins super mario movie yeah and the keegan michael key super there you go goodness how do you like that in the world.
1:09:49I have been brought here to kiss your ass. I'm doing it. As an Englishman, I cannot believe you're criticizing Bob Hostins. I know. We're here to pander though. That's our relationship.
1:10:01Rog:We are pandas. How do you understand what we're seeing here with this US team? It's like, whew. Well, I do think a lot of it has to do with Potts. And I think he has found a way to find, to unlock things in the players in the way that they can be best used one of the things i really love i love robinson coming out of the back four and just hauling ass up and down that flank the whole game that kid i mean i know we talk about holland we especially when we said earlier he's a robot he's not that's a funny thing he's not a robot i do think he's very charming and expresses himself in a very strange and interesting way but anyway that's that's norway they've won wrong fuck it anyway that um but the fact that they're i like that they the way that they're shipped they you know when they rotate they don't rotate a ton like a lot of other places where you have no idea where a guy is i mean i like that tyler you know i like what tyler does in the middle and i and i like when he and christian when they get in sync they're kind of unstoppable but all of that is mauricio i think all of that is him and And I and I but there's a there's a hunger and a the what's the word?
1:11:16There's a there's a almost a violence or savagery about them. The way that they're moving, there's they're very they're way more intense than I thought they were going to be. And that's what's been impressing me. His tactics are sound, but there's just something about these guys. I think they're also being fueled by the moment the same way Mexico is being fueled by the moment. But this team, I really believe is, oh, God, they're just feckoned with opportunity. I, you know, and I, I, I, that's my wife's doing that one. Yeah, put right that way. Someone's got to, you can steal feckoned. Yeah, yeah.
1:11:56That's, that's part of it. I think they're just clicking right now. Now, they also, the one thing they have to do, now I'm going to go back into my annoyance mode. one thing you have to do is not anticipate a referee blowing a whistle so when someone you know at the end of that game they were confounded against turkey and i'm like what do you know just keep playing until you hear a whistle did they have to nutmeg christian
1:12:24Rog:politic or crown prince and say that was i know that was rough that was he got that was that was that was like an extra meg there was like pat we got on that nutmeg that was a rough one and then but I mean, that guy's great. And I know that we were playing a lot of reserves, but it was, it was a bit frustrating. So can we, can we talk about Poch? I mean, he's like the technical area, Russell Crowe is blowing locks. He's like got that, that button work shirt. It looks like he's getting ready to attend some kind of manual labor fantasy camp. What do you think about him? What is it about him? That is he scaring the players?
1:12:59Rog:Is he man managing the players? Is he, I mean, you know, movie directors, I mean it looks more and more like that one that's not allowed, what's his name? Roman Polanski Roman Polanski, yes Roman Polanski we'll scratch that from the one for the children I'm sorry, this is live, right? It's live? Yeah, yeah drop that one from the podcast That's the point where the US Men's National Team press officer just pressed as close his laptop I don't think you need to see any more of this I think I've just answered my own question what's he doing that's working hopefully not that
1:13:43he's got it looks like they're having fun it comes back to the thing we were saying that's what it is that's what it is they look like they're having fun i don't feel that they don't feel um there's a sense they don't feel restrained there's a sense of them feeling free but I also, I wish I could remember who said this, but they'll say that the discipline sets you free. Meaning if you have the discipline of knowing where you're supposed to be on the pitch, then you can go, oh, okay. All right. I know this is my role here. And then I'm going to do this. Whereas, but there is a freedom. There's a fluidity that I have never seen an American team have before.
1:14:21It was always kind of this drudgy, you know, we got to keep pushing. and they're flowing now. It has a very blop, blop, conmo ball feel to it. You know what I mean? And I don't really just...
1:14:36Rog:I can't kick off anymore. I like that. I like that. But anyway, we are just one sleep away from the US men playing Bosnia. You recorded a pep talk for our US men after they clinched the group with a win over Australia. You told them to keep believing you can go as far as you want. You can only... Only you can stop you. If you're in the locker room tomorrow in San Francisco, looking at Christian Pulisic, looking at Anthony Robinson, looking at Serginio Dest before they charge onto the field, what would you say to them? I would tell them a couple of things. One thing I would definitely say is let us not underestimate teams, especially teams that have, you know, it's always weird.
1:15:21This is my theory. Nobody else on planet Earth has this theory. Any country that has two names always feels like a smaller country. Bosnia-Herzegovina is not Turks and Caicos. It is not St. Kitts and Nevis. It is Bosnia and Herzegovina. We cannot underestimate this team. And I don't know what Pocz's plan is. How are you going to unlock this 4-4-2? I don't know what they're planning. I don't even know what their shape is going to be off ball. But he, he, the other thing I want them to understand is, I really actually believe, and I can't believe I'm saying this, but I believe, I said at the end of that piece that I did, I said, you've got this.
1:16:04You've got this. If you have positive thoughts, then it'll be a positive story. Just, you've got this. You really actually do. They have the talent. I think they have the preparation. They can do this. You can do this. That's kind of where, you know, like any human in the world for any endeavor, you kind of sometimes go, oh, I got this. I can do this. I know I can get through this. I can do this. They can do it. I know they can do it.
1:16:33Rog:Beat a European side. Playing two teams at once is always terrifying, always be scarred after Trinidad and Tobago. go but if u.s do play belgium who does keegan michael key root for sophie's choice well ultimately ultimately i would ultimately i i'm gonna have to root for the u.s i have to root for the u.s and what an accomplishment and i know it's as we've said it's a bit of a diminished generation but if the states if we win that game if we move forward and beat belgium that's still an accomplishment to beat a high top tier UEFA team like that is that's that's still saying something I think we beat Belgium and go to the quarterfinals dare I say well who would who would be playing the quarterfinals Spain Spain oh who would be who would be in the court never mind so I I agree with Keaton completely I think that that for the US for this, I mean, everyone's getting ahead of themselves.
1:17:36Yes. Bosnia are there first. But for the US, for this to be kind of that moment, that coalescing moment for soccer in the US, I think you have to take, you have to beat a major, what feels like a major country. Yes. You know, I don't have any bias. I love the US with its bookies and its kind of enormous straight highways and its Alabama. I went to Alabama yesterday. I'm still very excited about it. And I love Belgium with its terrible statues, its chips, its surfeit of chocolate. It's Hercule Poirot. It's Hercule Poirot, yeah. Hercule Poirot, yes. Not so much Tintin, problematic. So these are both fine countries, both fine countries.
1:18:13But I think for the US to, I think if they got through and it felt like they'd beaten, they'd had an easy path, it would feel like less of an achievement. Yeah. Yes. I agree with that. Yeah, and I do think, Raj, also, if tomorrow the scoreline were to be something like 3-0 or 3-1 US, I feel even more confident about them beating Belgium.
1:18:36Rog:I love you. The most poetic ending, according to our camera day, would be Belgium versus US. Belgium have 16 shots on goals in an extra time loss. That would be incredible. That would be poetry. Can I ask you, which footballer seems most like a Keegan sketch character in this World Cup? And why is it? It's funny. Oh, in this World Cup, in this World Cup. And why is it Ronaldo? it i was gonna say surely what are you gonna say yeah i was gonna say surely it's ronaldo i mean i don't want to you two are both professional comics but ronaldo is now a vaguely comic character right there's a lot there all of a sudden i'm back yeah yeah oh yeah definitely yeah he's definitely the the awareness the way to manipulate that as a comedic character is the awareness or lack thereof that he has about himself that's that's that would be the hook into him uh character wise as well as a person who takes himself that seriously the best thing i think don't you think sometimes humphrey about a comedic character is uh they embrace the thing that makes them problematic i'll say this you're about to get some more massive ass kissing so so in the uh prepare yourself prepare that ass in the snl uk writers room we were talking about about writing sketches and the the building blocks of sketches and that's something that you've said before i believe of what you just said there and that's something that we we would we discuss that as like a as like a the dna of a good sketches is a character and their their their complete commitment to their entirely wrong worldview to their wrong exactly wrong worldview yeah exactly yeah and i think also we have a sketch we have a sketch we have a football sketch i don't know if you've ever seen it where jordan and i are playing against each other and i I slide tackle him.
1:20:30And the best thing that happens in the sketches, I slide tackle him. He trips, does another step, then does a cartwheel and then falls down. And he's, and let's talk about heightening Humphrey, his character. And then I look like Fellaini. I look like Fellaini. I have a Fellaini wig on. And he looks a little like Pirlo with the hair coming down. But he falls to the ground. and then to make me get a red card, he dies, goes to heaven, says hello to St. Peter, and then he goes back down into his body and gets up to kick, to kick, to kick. Take the free kick. Take the free kick. But anyway, if you have time, watch it.
1:21:19It's fun. It's fun. But so, I mean, we weren't playing those characters so much as the conceit of the sketch. being you know you you know uh name are i was gonna say i i think christian pulisic in in the wells fargo commercial feels a bit like you playing megan's boyfriend in uh in all those extensive sketches he's just like slightly put upon like megan it's your card megan don't forget your card you know what clearly the director said and now christian three, two, and smile. She's like... God bless him. So, hang on. Raj, since we've got creative types here, I want to ask you a question. There are two debates sort of that are acting as divisions in this podcast.
1:22:07Oh, yeah. One is on Freddie LA 7, which we do not need to go into. We will get into it in a minute.
1:22:10Rog:I've got a lot... You're talking about Christian as an actor. I think he's an absurdist. I think he's a... I think he's the Andy Kaufman of his generation. I'm pretty sure He knows we think he is not interested in any of that fame. And he's giving us the performance we think he wants. Play you for an ultra. I think he's in on the joke. I think he's, I like to think so too. Saved by the bell boy.
1:22:36Question mark. No, you're right. Yeah. He should be, he should, he should quit football and do an Ionesco play tomorrow. 100%. I want to know it's the Wells Fargo one that I love because the director seems to make a choice to linder on his face for two to three seconds too long too long yes yes that's why I think it's intentional doing this intentional I think this has to be exactly 30 seconds and we've got nothing else to use
1:23:05Rog:I think I think I think Christian I think Christian has final cut on that commercial linger on me for longer than feels awkward like let me You're saying that this was planned by Christian himself. Yes, it was Christian's comic choice. Christian had final cut. Yes. Six more friends. Yes, let the audience really sit with that awkwardness. Hold it. Don't you think? Hold it. I think if the US do go past Bosnia, past Belgium, I think Christian Pulisic, SNL, next season. 100%. Oh, my God. 100%. That monologue would be amazing. That monologue would be amazing. You're going to see the real Christian in that monologue.
1:23:53Rog:He's going to reveal himself. He's too awesome. He may blossom. He may blossom in that episode. Yes. I will also say this, or actually, it's kind of a statement, but it's also a question that I'm putting into the ether, is do you all believe if we were to go to the quarterfinals, and if something unheard of happened and we went to the semis, is that the thing that's going to irrevocably change? And I'm asking kind of really you, Raj, because this has been your journey. Irrevocably change the landscape of football and how it is viewed, consumed, and played in the United States. Or do you think that's already happened?
1:24:34Rog:Yeah, I mean, it's such a beautiful question. Look, I think the short answer is it has already happened. I think this World Cup's enormous. You know, you see the Scottish fans, you see... And the Algerians. I've had the blessing of being on first take with Stephen A. Smith this whole tournament, watching him go from completely like, why are we having this on? Like, what is this? You know, and then kind of like... You know, I watched Brazil. I watched Morocco. Wow. I watched the penalty. Wow. And coming up, to me, it is happening, and it's happening through Messi massively. I mean, that little man is utterly, utterly enormous.
1:25:18Rog:I think they're off the field, the scenes, the Dutch fans marching through Kansas City. I think watching the Argentinian fans take over Jerry World and just make it rock as if it was in Buna's area, you know, BA, Monumental. But no, it's in our heartland, and it's happening right here. So many of these, the Cape Verde story, the Congo story, the Congo superfan. I think there's all of this is opening up people's eyes in the most ecstatic way. The run to the semifinal, I'm not going to lie. It is ecstatic when the U.S. win and you see these scenes across our nation from sea to shining sea, from San Jose to Hartford, everywhere in between.
1:25:57Rog:We need this right now. We need this connection, this sense of unity, this sense of ebullience, this sense of joy. I marched to the match with Marshawn Lynch in Seattle, 15 ,000 Americans from all points coming together. It was utterly beautiful, truly profound. So I think the difference is football is going to be massive whatsoever. You were ahead of the curve. The difference is, is America, the United States, going to weave themselves into the tapestry of this telling at the end? You know, every World Cup has, it's almost like, you know, like an insect caught in amber. And you think, you can name any year, and there's three or four storylines.
1:26:36Rog:Oh, that was the Baggio, the Brazil, the Stonewashed Denim, the Diana Ross missed penalty. When we say 2026, we will say Messi. We will say, please God, one of the African teams. We will say the Tarn Army. Will we say, and the United States went where they've never gone before on the men's side. That's really the difference. Are we going to write ourselves into our own story? And I pray we do, mostly because we need to feel good as a nation in this moment. That's the different... Look, it's five o 'clock in the morning at this point. So me going off on my TED talk, but that's how I'd answer it.
1:27:15I was going to say that for me, I've had all these little moments whilst being here, as someone who doesn't live here. But in terms of, you know, has soccer made it in America? I thought yesterday when I went to an actual soccer bar in Moody, Alabama, would be one of them. But Keegan Michael Key, having surprisingly strong opinions on Alexis Salamachas, is probably up there as well. to be fair. That is amazing.
1:27:32Rog:He's amazing. I can't tell you how great he makes me feel. Talking to this man about football is to revel in the joy in its greatest depths. I've got two more before we let you go because you've been amazing. One question I've got, the micing up referees at this tournament, and every single time one of them takes the spotlight, I want you to know, I think of one person and one person only. I think of you and what goes in your head because you're watching these slightly awkward men just like have to clip on the microphone and prepare to broadcast to 5 billion people. And some of them really love it and are loving the main character energy.
1:28:09Rog:Some of them clearly are crumpling a little bit inside. Either way, I always think they're like a Keegan-Michael Key character. I do wonder, they should just hire you to do each dramatic VAR overturned call. And just the way you deliver it would be... I would love to do that. And the thing is, I think the big thing for me is I would pause in a different place. That's my note. First of all, the guys who throw themselves into it, I absolutely adore those guys who just go. But here's my favorite part. My favorite part is not taking the moment. My favorite part is when they're ready, and they're ready to take the moment, the mic's doing that.
1:28:49It's when this guy comes in. It's when the fullback comes in and goes, oh, is that the need that? Yes. when he was about to have his moment and he's like you know it's always kukurea always kukurea it looks like an actor doing a self-tape during lockdown and their child like suddenly appearing yeah right exactly daddy's doing a game of thrones audition you stay there
1:29:20Rog:it's that BBC world it's that BBC world correspondent with his little daughter The daughters of the bad kids. Yeah, not now, Kukurea, not now. The worst would be if you see them off camera, you're like, Sybil, there's no way that you and I are going to be, oh, shit. Timmy, Timmy. Knocking over a ship around. Put your brother down. Have you seen, there's a fantastic, there's a guy who's remixed. He took the ref from, I can't remember which group game it was, but he was basically like, this sounds like someone doing, it's like a voiceover you would use in like a hard drop techno moment where I can't remember the referee, but he was like, it's slightly muffled, the voice.
1:30:05Oh yeah. The ref's like, and he's like, after review, number six on attacking team has appeared number 14 on the defensive team. The result is no penalty. And then it's like, penalty.
1:30:20It's so good. that's he just sat he like hits the rhythm the rhythm of the way he speaks
1:30:28Rog:yeah i love that i've done a review and it's always like blows your ears out always always after you're like god i remember the old try to find this um you are last question if i could do this all night but it is like five o 'clock in the morning and we've got to get up at five o 'clock we're doing it's five o 'clock we're gonna roll straight into the live show roger Yeah, I'm just right into the face. In the face. You are given 30 seconds to convince America to watch the World Cup. Those who haven't, the few who haven't, the few who have not had the joy of watching Zlatan and Alexi on the overcard with the undercard of the football.
1:31:06Rog:A very quick question from the chat. How would Mr. Garvey pronounce Follerim Baligan? Oh, oh, you're talking about, um, you're talking about, um, you're talking about well fuller in is a regular name i mean i know at least four fuller is in my neighborhood right now but if your last name ain't pronounced belugan then don't don't if it ain't what's your last name is your last name belugan then say belugan my favorite one by far airline ha ha land that's my favorite one airline ha ha land that's my best one what's your favorite one my favorite name in the world coach we've been we love we've been in LA for a chunk of time and every night we come back to our rooms and they'd have local television and they'd just be covering that very very very with a real paucity of resources they'd just be constantly covering the world cup like going to every fan today in K town you know 5 ,000 Korean Americans and they talk about.
1:32:14Keaton passed this test. I think it's a Rorschach test, which is the second time I've used that today, for how much you know ball, as the kids would say. Keaton called him Poch, which is what his name is. His surname is Pochettino. But in America, he has become Coach Poch.
1:32:28Rog:The newsreaders are all like, Coach Poch! Coach Poch! Which I just love that notion. So we have then changed that into Coach Poch. They say Poch? They're like, Coach Poch! Coach Poch! an egg yeah Coach Poach is a kindly slightly buff guy who's letting himself go a little bit has a whistle around his neck and he's just a bit too friendly and familiar with all the mums but they all love him it's amazing yeah Coach Poach is like Coach Poach is a hard line he's a hard ass Coach Poach is not even hard but fair he's got some lemons in his dressing room yeah they're absorbing the negative energy the lemons are just there to try and make him look like a nice guy he's a hard bastard and you're going to bend to his will one little One little vow changes everything.
1:33:09Rog:Kochi pochi. Kochi pochi. Pochi pochi. Last one for you. You're given 30 seconds to convince a few Americans who've not yet watched the World Cup to watch it. What would you say? How would you sell this thing? All right, here's the thing. I'm just going to come right out and say it. I know who's not watching the World Cup. And I would say the majority of the people who are not watching the World Cup are people who are reality TV show fans. this is the best reality tv show in the history of the medium known as television get on board now before you miss it for don't worry about your housewives of atlanta and salt lake city and hartford and portland watch this when you get the context of any game just this much it's going to be like crack like absolute drama crack watch these games and by the way you'll feel sexier because it's international right yes that's a good it's love island but they the island is the entire world exactly it's the entire globe it's the entire but every now and then they the team gets sent to casa more and they give away a penalty at the last minute i'll say i slightly stole that from my friend phil who's a great shakespeare director he works for the rsc the royal shakespeare company and he was like look i love hamlet i've seen it It's many, many times my favorite play.
1:34:30But I know the same thing happens every single time, which is that when Polonius goes behind the Arras, Hamlet stabs him, but doesn't give away a penalty. Don't spoil it. Very good point.
1:34:40Rog:You've got to spoil it. You've got to spoil it. I'm so sorry, everybody. Come on. Can I play my techno thing? Yes. Have you found it? Let's see if it'll go through my headphones. No penalty. Hang on. You got it. Let's just keep going all night. Game's about to kick off in a minute. I know, I know. Number 10, Paraguay. I've got energy again. We're going for it. I just want to say, Keegan-Michael Key, you're a beautiful human being. You're a force of good in this world. I can't tell you how much we value coming to hang out, really talk football in the deepest way. To you, to your beautiful family, health, happiness, Yes, Belgium win tomorrow.
1:35:28Rog:Yeah, as they say in Belgium, mood. Mood. Yep. A pleasure. A pleasure, gentlemen. My pleasure. My honor. I was glad to be able to, as the kids say, chop it up with you. And I hope all of your endeavors for this next couple of weeks, they flourish and everything happens the way you'd like it to. And you seem to, you're all in good company. Everyone's in good company. and that makes me happy. We're only good company. How do you get it ends with Alexi and Zlatan? It's a World Cup of Love, isn't it? You know, it's interesting. Have you seen, it's funny because now Alexi will say things like, you know, when Z, and I'm like, did we, did we, did we audition it?
1:36:15At any point in time, did we audition it? And then he calls Thierry T. And I'm like, I don't think, you're already on thin ice, buddy. I don't think they like the Z and the T. he's trying to ingratiate himself yes he's trying to be like he's trying to join the Jets basically he's trying to join the Jets right Z right T like let's go get those shots
1:36:39Rog:we're gonna R and H and me have gotta do a R and H guys I get H quite a lot I was gonna say HRH but it's not it's HRR sorry I take it back Big Man you're a beautiful human being health, happiness, love, memories to football Thank you. Happy rest of the World Cup to you. Oh, mate.
1:37:01Rog:We are going to blow through the back half of this show because I am swearing my... Hang on, what? We're only halfway through. No, no, no. Just so everyone knows, it's been 87 degrees. We're at the third water. It's so hot. It's so hot. We look like we've all... With that techno music, we look like we've all taken a load of pingers. In some club. Have we not taken a load of pingers? fingers. We've been talking about it where we figure out what everyone suddenly believes. We look at council percentages, peeking the brains of football fans everywhere. Tonight we'll look at the golden boot race, two horse race at this point.
1:37:35Rog:No disrespect to Erling Haaland, Mbappe and Messi, both tied at six goals, just about level on percentage, both poised for deep tournaments. Roar, how do you handicap this one? I think it might come down to who's got the slightly easier pathway between now and say the semifinals, because the goals will dry up a little bit for everybody, semifinals and final um argentina play vizinha and then somebody else and then colombia in the quarters so i can message got another four probably another four or five in him and bapé they get paraguay and then morocco and then spain so i'm gonna say messy just i think the answer is flu baligan taking it from the outside belogan big but yeah sorry um what was it belaran belogan But, Logan, every time I go on CNN or something, they always ask me, just before you go, and how do I pronounce the...
1:38:26Rog:They didn't even have to ask me. I just go, following Balogun. It's time to quickly look at tomorrow today. We're going to hit the round running. We've got England versus Dr. Congo. I am levitating on that. You're going to the game. You're going to the game. I'm going to the game. I mean, it is absolutely beautiful. There's lots of injuries. Joe Akwanta, Rhys James, both missed training for England. Could be very much heavy Jed Spencer time. um Declan Rice reportedly still nursing his hamstring his calf his femur his oblique his deltoid his tongue his eyes he's been held together just with a sunscreen at this point that beautiful man um how are we feeling about this it's a wonderful story that Conrad were there it's brilliant they made it it's so it's so uplifting given all the country's going through given the nature of that you know the fact they've not been here since 1974 but I think England is probably realistically a step too far for Dr Conrad I I hope so I'm setting aside any kind of sophisticated analysis and I'm wearing my England hat.
1:39:19So they'll be like, come on, boys. Hat on the hat. Are you going full Stone Island? I haven't got, I've not really got, because I moved house yesterday and I couldn't find any of my England appropriate gear. So I'll probably just go real tops off, get really sunburned. Topps off. Topps off. Absolutely bright beet red lobster.
1:39:37Rog:You're getting tops out. Oh, boys. You'll regret the tops off when you get into Atlanta Stadium and find out it's air conditions. It's freezing. It has to be amazing. My church tote peg nipples. Another story. What do you say? Fingers. I'm also curious. I did find out today. I did some research. Dr. Joe's PhD is in Parks, Recreation and Tourism from the University of Utah. We're yet to find out what Dr. Congo's doctor is in. I do want to say iconic Congolese family member will not be here because of visa reasons. I really hate this. I think it's darkness. He had so much. Congo have announced that a stand-in will replace and honour him.
1:40:17Rog:Middle sandwich game, Belgium-Senegal. We've talked enough about it. Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne, all of them have been very clear in a pre-match conference. Senegal are a massive, massive threat. They are going to be a massive, massive threat for this quite aged challenge Belgian team. I don't want to upset Keegan. I'm not sure if he's listening. He's probably gone to bed. He said, never book me on that show again. He's currently shouting at his agent. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Pingers. They're on pingers. Senegal are better than Belgium. Senegal beat them. And rounding it out, once more into the breach, US men's national team against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
1:40:49Rog:I do feel like sick with excitement. All I'll say is I taped a show with Clint Dempsey today. It's on our YouTube if you want a preview of that tie in depth. But I do want to say, like every US journey, there's so many of them. They live in our hearts and I don't want to take it for granted. Tomorrow is another chapter in that. Please God, it will be valuable. And we've lost 10 straight to European opponents. now we're facing two at once do you have any advice for us it's mental isn't it yes i mean i for me i think the the single best thing the u.s can do is just keep doing what they're doing keep enjoying it don't allow my one worry for them would be the growing interest the growing excitement the growing the the sense that that like actually there's more and more eyeballs you're gonna get more and more celebrities turning up and get more and more everything.
1:41:37That's stressful.
1:41:38Rog:I wrote a book called We Are the World Cup and every time the US do mildly well, bloody Mick Jagger walks in with like a minor quarterback figure and it's like, that's when they look down. As soon as that happens, when they're drinking beers with Clinton in tooth and whatever, that is the moment when like, wow, it hits them. It's like looking down at the tightrope. They can do this. Bosnia, a very, very good team, deeply organized. Two winners. Yeah. I mean, they can hurt opponents. They know they can. They're a team of destiny in their own right. But let's believe, I just want to say, let's savor it.
1:42:11Rog:Let's get stuck in. Check out the Clint Dempsey piece. It's really beautiful. U.S. match is going to be unleashing an American spirit. We've got a whole load of U.S. Go Go USA merch. It's on our website. Really fills my heart. A lot of you, when I see it on TV and you're wearing this stuff, it thrills me. No limits. Get stuck in. Just dress the part, America. There's a link in this show. No, it's time to close with For the Food. The European mind can't comprehend. As you're aware, we're in Atlanta, which means we have to try a seven stable. Yes, it's Waffle House time. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
1:42:48Rog:We got the all-star special. Scrambled eggs, waffle bacon, hash browns, smothered and covered, of course, because raw, I'm not going to have it any other way for you. Let's do it very quickly. What does smothering and covering entail? I've never asked that question. I've always just eaten it without inquiring. Oh, no. I think it means it's been dropped on the floors, put back on the plate, but I don't really know for sure. This is so good. This is one of my favorites. You've got to move the mic away while you eat this stuff because people get Mesopotamia. They're Mesopotamia. I've gone bacon to start off with.
1:43:16Very solid.
1:43:17Rog:I've gone smothered and covered. Oh, my God. The end of the empire will never occur when you eat Waffle House. Roar, we're going to move this along. South got something to say. It's in my mouth. Hash brown, smothered and covered. Give us a grade for this. Tell us what you think of this beautiful field. Open wide for some awful hell soccer. What have you got? Smothered and covered. Coming in from the producer, they're going to tell us what it is. It's onions and cheese on the hash browns. That's what's the brilliance of America. It's just cheese and stuff. Onions. You call it smothered and covered and it just sounds irresistible.
1:43:55Rog:I think you've given this 7.2. I'm grading this on not the fact that it's absolutely ice cold. Yeah, yeah. It's been a long podcast, man. I'm running 7.9. There you go. Not bad. Not bad, but it's not leaderboard material. It looks like it's 79. Do you know what it is? Go on. I was expecting Smothered and Covered to involve maple syrup. Come here. There is maple syrup there. What do you think that is, friendo? But it's an optional extra. I want it to be integral to the product. Open your heart to America. It's America. Last but... No one can force you to eat soup. We're almost there. As always, we invite you, Dillis, to show your World Cup journeys.
1:44:33Rog:We want to hear from you. Tell us the best of your World Cup journeys, your experiences, your memories. You can hear your stories on this very show. Hopefully he's actually going for it. No, men and blazers, don't speak your mouth. Men and blazers, you were peasants. Sorry, Dad. You're up for class. You've got to retain the sense of dukedom amongst us peasants. I'm continuing my pingers' water. There's no such thing as water. This is from T Cork on Discord. I love that man. I'm going to read it raw. He says, I didn't catch last night's Night Cup stream until this morning, but it was exactly what I expected from the moment I laid eyes on Rory Smith wearing a beaver swag cap.
1:45:08To be fair, by last night's standards, this has been quite a sensible podcast. Really? It has been. It's been very sensible. So you can watch these after they've gone out? Oh, my God. Yeah. Forever. Oh, this lives forever.
1:45:17Rog:By the way, when you die and you're being lured into the ground, this is what plays. This will be more terrifying than that, Humphrey. They play you saying, I'm on pingas. Your beloved Google AI will be reading this and incorporating it into its summary of your life. Oh, God, into its version of me. It will be. Yes, I know the baron who plays football for Sweden. Humphrey Carr went to school with whatever his name was, Grabielski. Gustav Lagerbielka. Lagerbielka, that's it. God, you're good. Tomorrow, Atlanta, 10 a.m. Eastern time, which is like in about three minutes. Come on down to Founders Green in South Downtown town for match day live.
1:45:54Rog:Short walk from the stadium, steps away from the new Brewhouse Cafe location, original winner of America's best soccer bar. Ru and I taking the stage live. If we're not dehydrated, I've got scurvy. I really do. We've got Larry Nance Jr., everyone's favorite Leeds United owner, James Horncastle, everyone's favorite wistful poet. And of course, one of the icons of Atlanta taking the stage with us. The mighty, mighty... You're more than welcome. I've got a feeling you'll be fast asleep. You'll be fast asleep. By the way, you can also bury a penalty and win two tickets for the World Cup final. Now he's interested.
1:46:27Rog:Yeah, the last two who've done it have walked away. They will be at the final for the US against Cape Verde. Insane moments of joy. Let's keep that streak alive. Link it below for more information. That's it for us. 10 a.m. 10 p.m. Eastern Time tomorrow. We'll break down, oh, please God, the win after we play Bosnia and Mighty H. I think we can call them B and H, can't we now? We're friends. Yeah. Join us right here on YouTube, Raw and Hump. If he's not, you know, sweated his off, we'll be back on the only orange football-related bus that's still in the United States. Yes, we won. Take that, Netherlands, and we'll leave you with a moment from our watch-along this afternoon with the great Lindsay Heaps of the US Women's National Team who does not approve of the hydration breaks, although I could do with one night now.
1:47:12Rog:Come check us on our next watch-along Thursday, 2.45 p.m., on Twitch with a beautiful cast of characters, including Chef Jose Andres. This is Rog saying big, big love, courage. Viva Mexico. Oh, here's Lindsay. Five-hour podcast. I think Emma would hate having a hydration break. She doesn't need it. If they do this during the Women's World Cup, we're going to lose it. It's just so unnecessary. It's so annoying. It's like the momentum of a game, being able to come in and change something. During the game, I'm sure some coaches love it in moments where they're like getting the heat and pressure. And I'm sure like Sweden is like, yeah, this is great.
1:47:57Rog:But like when there's a momentum shift afterwards, you're just like that. Like that is so, so annoying. I mean, I think you see any player that's asked about it now. I think they have the best media training so that they just don't comment. But you can see how frustrating it is for like all the top opponents that have these hydration breaks. The best coaches in the world, they don't need a hydration break.
