(Lindsay Heaps), Night Cup crew members Rog and Rory Smith, plus actor Diego Luna (Mexico supporter) for a later segment.

Key claims

Senegal could upset France again; Tunisia’s Sabri Lamucci sacking after one match may be harsh but could be inspiration (comparison to Lopetegui and Ivory Coast’s 2023 AFCON turnaround).

Notable examples

Fazzina’s record, Senegal’s 2002 shock, Ryerson’s Dortmund assists, Messi’s qualifying record, and Tunisia’s replacement by Hervé Renard.

2:51LA is just beautiful, isn't it? It's a hard job. Welcome to Morning Cup Update, built by the Home Depot. The Home Depot is your winning assist to host the ultimate watch party with fast free delivery to get your backyard match day ready, subject to availability. We'll begin with the first game of the day as World Cup debutants Cape Verde beat Spain 0-0.

3:18the Spanish pushed and pushed and pushed but they were met by a 40 year old brick wall named Fazzina who plays his football in the Portuguese second division he made a staggering seven saves becoming the oldest player to keep a clean sheet in a world cup so he stopped world cup favorite Spain and then gained five million Instagram followers it's not half bad is it he started of the day with 50 ,000 just to give you a little bit of context. Everyone fell in love with his pure emotion at the full-time whistle. Tears streaming down his face. He caught up with Rog on the night cup. What do you want the world to say about Cap Verde after today?

3:56Then we are small country but we have a big heart and we are very resilient. We are proud to be Cap Verdean and we are here to show them we will fight everything and we will do everything to put the name of Cap Verde to everyone. What an incredible performance, by the way, from Cape Verde. A massive result as well, whose defensive organisation was first class. Sam Lewis from the women's game was recording live with USWNT captain Lindsay Heaps and this was her reaction when she found out about the result. Oh, it was crazy. I was just watching Spain-Cape Verde. Uh-huh. I'm pretty sure they just tied 0-0.

4:33What? Yeah. Okay, let's put that on the buzzer for today. I like it. What? Then in the other game in Group H, there were sweltering conditions in Miami for Saudi Arabia against Uruguay. The Saudis took a 41st minute lead and held on thanks to some terrific goalkeeping by Mohamed Alouez, but Uruguay pushed heavily and they eventually found the equaliser through Maxi Araujo 10 minutes from time. Up in Seattle in Group G, it was Belgium against Egypt and the Pharaohs are still looking for their first ever World Cup win after a 1-1 draw. Imam Asur powered Egypt into a first-half lead and a thumping strike.

5:12It was lovely. Go and check it out. But Belgium equalised after the break via an own goal. Then in the final game of the evening, it was Iran against New Zealand. Now, you might be forgiven for thinking that this was a match that you could skip. No, never. And do you know what? I feel sorry for you if you did because you missed a bit of a classic. a two-all draw in which Iran equalised twice to snatch a deserved point. It means that all four games yesterday ended in a draw, which maybe doesn't sound the most thrilling on paper, but actually, all of them, they were quite good, you know? OK, we're into day six of the World Cup.

5:49What? 16 matches played, another four today, and it all kicks off in New Jersey as France take on Senegal in Group I. It is giving a throwback to 2002. You might think, I don't know, Britney Spears back then. But also, Senegal were making their debut in the World Cup and they dramatically upset the French in the opening match, who at the time were the reigning world champions. Oh, and Boubacar is there. And Senegal has scored the first goal of the 2002 World Cup.

6:24Fantastic, Chad. His goal was responsible for one of their biggest shocks in World Cup history. However, it's a sign of how far Senegal have come that a win today wouldn't be quite as unexpected. Let's be real, though. France are one of the tournament's big favourites, and it is because they boast an array of talent. The expected front line of Mbappe, Dembele, Elice, Truam is the stuff of nightmares for defenders. And then the centre-back pairing of Upamecano and Saliba is rock solid. French fans are likely to be in good numbers in the Big Apple. Their ultras are called Les Irresistibles Francais.

7:01Hold on, my producer, Sammy, speaks French.

7:07Irresistible Francais. I think that's a bit better. And their marches are no joke. They're often led by a man in a chicken costume. Or should I say, poulet.

7:26Nothing quite strikes fear into your enemies like a chicken costume. As for Senegal, their nickname is a little bit cooler, the Lions of Taranga, one of the very best that. They sort of won the AFCON in January. They beat Morocco in the final 1-0, but they were stripped of their trophy for leaving the field in protest about a refereeing decision that went Morocco's way. Senegal's coach, Pap Chow, played in that famous 2002 World Cup, and he is a real bright star in the world of coaching. He's moulded Senegal into a well-balanced, high-energy team, blending youth and experience. And if you watch the Premier League, you'll know a few of the players, Sadio Mane, Nicholas Jackson and Pat Matassar.

8:04Then in the other, Group I clash, Norway play Iraq in Boston. Here's a Norway fan I spoke to here in LA. We asked him to pitch his nation in 30 seconds or so. We have the best jersey in the World Cup. We have the best striker in the world. We have the best chant in the World Cup. We have the best team photo with the Vikings. Great fans, beautiful women, beautiful nature. What's not to like? There you have it. Anyone for Norway as your second team? Anyone? No? No? No. I'm surprised Manchester City's Erling Haaland wasn't at the very top of that list, though. This is its first ever World Cup, with Norway not making the finals since 1998.

8:44This isn't just a case of benefiting from the expanded tournament, though. They won eight out of eight qualifying matches in a group that contained Italy. who obviously didn't make it. Haaland isn't the only star player. They also have Arsenal's Martin Odegaard and Atletico Madrid's Alexander Solov. However, one of their key attackers is somebody you might be a little bit less familiar with. Here is the topic of today's drill down.

9:11Today's drill down brought to you by Makita is Norway's secret weapon that will be pretty crucial in their attempts to break down what's likely to be a very disciplined Iraq team. While their focus may be on stopping those star names of Haaland, Soloth and Odegaard, Norway's right-back Julian Ryerson is likely to be key in terms of creating chances for their deadly attackers. Ryerson plays for Borussia Dortmund and he's racked up 15 assists, the second most in the Bundesliga. Also, he assisted twice in Norway's recent 3-1 win over Sweden. He's a threat on the overlap and he even has a catapult of a long throw as well.

9:46Next at 9pm Eastern is Argentina against Algeria in Group J. And Argentina fans, we know they love a World Cup.

10:01The current champions enter the show today and the key to their team is continuity. Lionel Scaloni is in charge. Still, much of the squad is also the same. And their talisman and influence is, of course, this man.

10:20Lionel Messi, at 39 years young, is appearing in his sixth World Cup. And whilst questions are asked about whether Cristiano Ronaldo holds back Portugal, there is literally nobody asking that question about Messi. The team's record in South American qualifying was formidable. They finished nine points clear of second place Ecuador and even recorded a first ever away competitive win over Brazil. Coach Scaloni was defiant in the build-up to that, saying, we are not going to win the World Cup. We are going to defend it. There we go. They will be heavy favourites against Algeria, but it's by no means a gimme.

10:57They've been given quite the warm welcome in Kansas. First of all, the local university got the big band out.

11:10We love a big band over here. they were also warmly welcomed by this lovely local gentleman. Welcome to United States. Welcome to Kansas. Algeria are at their first World Cup since 2014, a tournament where they so nearly upset the eventual champions Germany in the round of 16. Their coach, Vladimir Petkovic, has formed for producing shocks against the big teams. His Switzerland team famously beat France at Euro 2020. The star man is Riyad Mahrez, now at the ripe old age of 35, who hasn't quite got the legs to do it for 90 minutes anymore, but he can still make a difference. Luka Zidane is expected to start in goal.

11:47And yes, I know what you're all thinking. He is the son of Zinedine. Finally, in San Francisco at midnight Eastern is the other game in Group J as Austria take on Jordan, who are in their first ever World Cup. And whilst they'll definitely be the underdogs, their quick transitions may spring a shock. Austria are back on the world stage for the first time since 1998. They've become a very well-structured side under former Man United boss Ralf Rangnick, but have a lot of injury concerns. And star defender Christoph Baumgartner hurt his thigh and is out of the tournament. Their other centre-back, David Alaba, is also a doubt.

12:22Has cruel fate smashed your dreams of football in glory during this FIFA World Cup? Fear not. You're now a sporting free agent. With your choice of squads, the opportunity to pick someone new, the teams with the catcher songs, The country you studied abroad in, the goalkeeper with the magnificent hair. 14:10Tonight, after Austria take on Jordan, head to the Men in Blazers YouTube as the Night Cup crew are joined by a truly special guest, friend of the pod, acclaimed actor and Mexico super supporter, Diego Luna. Throughout the tournament, I am going head to head with a prediction challenge against one of the Night Cup team. Yesterday, I took on Rory Smith. We made a great start, as I predicted Belgium-Egypt draw. Rory went for a 1-0 win to Egypt. However, Rory correctly got the result between Iran and New Zealand. I went for a 3-0 win, which was a terrible shout. The series remains level between the night cup and the morning cup date, but I'm hoping today's the day where we take the lead.

14:47Come on, Betty. It's me against Rog with our picks for day six. Rog, right, let's go. France against Senegal, what are you saying? I see a Senegal victory. They're going to bring their People's AFCON Championship to the field and they're going to beat France as they did in 2002. I think it's going to be 2-1. Wow. We're going to be able to sell and die for a lot of money. Excellent. Okay, I'm going to go for a France win and I'm going to say 2-1. Am I meant to comment on this? Well, if you want to. We've only got like four hours to wait to see. okay next one Austria against Jordan I was going to do the Argentina game but that would make it too easy the big one Ralph Rangnick against Jordan not of the air variety I think who's going to win there I think football will be the winner I mean when you think about the World Cup that is the game just uniting the Hashemite Kingdom I am going to have to push you for an answer I'm just trying to compute I think Austria are going to win I think it's going to be 3-1 oh okay nice I was going to go those vibes, but I'll go with Jordan then.

15:56I'll back the debutante's Jordan. So I'm going to say 2-1 to Jordan. You're just a contrarian. Do you wait to see what I say and then do the opposite? Yeah, make it interesting. Or batrage.

16:14Welcome to the Finishing Touch, brought to you by Bear Paint. And today we're asking, is this the harshest sacking in World Cup history? Breaking news, Tunisia have decided to sack the manager, Sabri Lamucci, after one game of the World Cup. Fabrizio Romano there, breaking the news that Tunisian manager Sabri Lamucci has been sacked after just one game and is set to be replaced by legendary French coach Hervé Renard. Now, I know it was a pretty terrible performance against Sweden, but it is a bit harsh, isn't it? Now, before we decide, let's take a look at some of the other contenders for this title.

16:49In recent history, current Qatar manager Julian Lopetegui was subject to his pretty controversial dismissal ahead of the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Just two days before their opening World Cup match, Spain have sacked their manager. Bit of a weird one this. Real Madrid rather prematurely announced Lopetegui as their next manager before the tournament had begun. So he was immediately sacked on the spot by the Spanish FA. What? What? What? Poor Fernando Yero was given the job before a completely discombobulated, I love that word, Spain crashed out to Russia in the round of 16. Now, the tournament with the most sackings was France 1998, as both South Korea and Tunisia, again, made mid-tournament changes.

17:33But perhaps the best mid-tournament sacking wasn't at the World Cup, but it was actually in 2023, AFCON. Host nation Ivory Coast got smashed 4-0 by Equatorial Guinea. It was a national humiliation and everybody assumed that they were cooked. Manager Jean-Louis Gasset resigned forward slash was sacked on the spot out of sheer embarrassment. However, with assistant Amers Faye suddenly in charge, they caught lightning in a bottle and went on one of the most legendary chaotic runs in football history to win the title. So before you write off Tunisia's move as Rash, it could be a touch of inspiration.
